Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: You know in this world this is Green Lantern is
- 0:02Speaker 1: bigger than Michael Jackson like bigger than LeBron James you
- 0:05Speaker 1: know bigger than whoever you want to talk about this
- 0:07Speaker 1: Green Lantern so as a black mother though would you
- 0:11Speaker 1: have trusted this alien when she comes down and is
- 0:13Speaker 1: like you know your son could be space Jesus Scott
- 0:31Speaker 1: Welcome back to another episode of the For All Nerds show.
- 0:34Speaker 1: And as always, we are bringing you nothing but straight heat.
- 0:39Speaker 1: You know, this is one you have all been waiting
- 0:42Speaker 1: for out there. We told you we had a special
- 0:45Speaker 1: surprise for all of our Lanterns fans. And look at God.
- 0:50Speaker 1: Welcome to the spaceship, Vanessa Bain and Kelly, the writer, director, producer,
- 0:55Speaker 1: and actor. You've seen her in Rosewood as Vanessa in
- 0:58Speaker 1: Gullah Gullah Island, Kyra Rockmore in Kenan and Kel, a
- 1:02Speaker 1: writer on the sex lives of college girls. Fast forward
- 1:06Speaker 1: to now. Let me, I mean, let's start clapping right
- 1:09Speaker 1: now because an executive writer on HBO's, I mean, biggest
- 1:13Speaker 1: hit in a long time, Lantern. You know, let's, please.
- 1:20Speaker 2: Thank you so much.
- 1:21Speaker 3: We really, this really matters for a variety of reasons.
- 1:23Speaker 3: You know, obviously, you know, we're, we're, we talk about
- 1:26Speaker 3: Gullah Gullah Island real quick. You know, that's that, that's
- 1:28Speaker 3: my stuff, man. That's my childhood. I love that stuff,
- 1:31Speaker 3: you know, but it's so interesting to see someone come
- 1:34Speaker 3: from that, you know, being an actor and then now
- 1:36Speaker 3: you're writing and you're writing still stuff that is childhood, right?
- 1:40Speaker 3: Like stuff that is very intrinsically who we are here
- 1:43Speaker 3: for all nerds, everything that is so important to us. Um,
- 1:47Speaker 3: And as Ben mentioned, like the probably biggest hit that
- 1:50Speaker 3: HBO has had in like forever. And you are like
- 1:54Speaker 3: the head writer on the blackest and biggest hit that
- 1:57Speaker 3: they got. So are your parents finally happy with the
- 2:01Speaker 3: path that you chose?
- 2:04Speaker 4: Yes, they are.
- 2:05Speaker 5: Yes. Everybody understand what I'm, what I'm doing now. Like
- 2:09Speaker 5: when you first start writing and like, you're just writing
- 2:11Speaker 5: some show on some weird thing. Everybody's like, Okay, so
- 2:16Speaker 5: how long is this going to last? I already do
- 2:18Speaker 5: stuff like this, and it's like, oh, okay, I see it.
- 2:20Speaker 4: I see the vision.
- 2:22Speaker 1: I'll say, Vanessa, like, I've only had one experience I
- 2:24Speaker 1: worked on, American Gods.
- 2:27Speaker 4: Oh, that's a good one to work on.
- 2:28Speaker 1: It was. It definitely was, you know, but you know
- 2:30Speaker 1: how it ended. So, yeah, it was, so it wasn't,
- 2:32Speaker 1: you know.
- 2:32Speaker 4: We just had this conversation like five minutes ago. I
- 2:34Speaker 4: don't know. I'm going to break it to you. You
- 2:36Speaker 4: ain't going to see no more of this.
- 2:38Speaker 1: When people are like, oh, you worked on American, I'm like, yeah.
- 2:42Speaker 6: First one I breathe. Yeah.
- 2:45Speaker 1: But I will say, you know, my mom, I've always done,
- 2:50Speaker 1: you know, wild stuff and different things. So it wasn't
- 2:52Speaker 1: like my parents weren't used to it. But when my
- 2:54Speaker 1: mom did see what a check was, she was she
- 2:57Speaker 1: was like, OK, you know, this is not DJing, you know,
- 3:02Speaker 1: at the nightclub anymore.
- 3:03Speaker 4: So you're not a DJ.
- 3:05Speaker 1: You know, you're doing a little something with your life,
- 3:08Speaker 1: you know. So that was nice. But OK, good to
- 3:12Speaker 1: know that they're happy. Good. Yeah, and like we said,
- 3:15Speaker 1: Lanterns is just something else. You know, we have been
- 3:18Speaker 1: discussing it all. You know, we dropped a two-hour-plus episode
- 3:23Speaker 1: talking about it today. So, you know, when you got
- 3:26Speaker 1: into the writers' room, what felt special about this joint?
- 3:32Speaker 4: What didn't? Like, just to be very honest.
- 3:34Speaker 5: You know, like, one, you're getting to bring Green Lantern
- 3:38Speaker 5: to the small screen, which I know a lot of
- 3:41Speaker 5: people are like, They're they're film buffs, but I'm a
- 3:44Speaker 5: TV buff.
- 3:45Speaker 4: Like, I love TV.
- 3:46Speaker 5: I think the TV is one of the most important
- 3:48Speaker 5: mediums that we have because you're inviting somebody to come
- 3:51Speaker 5: and sit in your living room every week. You know,
- 3:53Speaker 5: and it's like not to make light of things, but
- 3:57Speaker 5: especially culturally, all of us know how we feel when
- 4:01Speaker 5: Will's daddy didn't stay to take him on that trip.
- 4:04Speaker 5: We all, we, if I see that meme come across
- 4:08Speaker 5: my eyes well up because it was like, we invited
- 4:12Speaker 5: that family into our house every week and we'll deserve
- 4:15Speaker 5: it better than that. And those were our friends and
- 4:17Speaker 5: that was our family. And we felt it so deeply.
- 4:19Speaker 5: And there's so many, there's so many television moments that
- 4:22Speaker 5: are like that. And I feel like television is the
- 4:25Speaker 5: only medium where that can happen. So to bring iconic
- 4:29Speaker 5: characters like how Jordan and Jon Stewart into television and
- 4:33Speaker 5: into people's homes, it felt like something that you couldn't
- 4:36Speaker 5: turn down.
- 4:37Speaker 2: One.
- 4:37Speaker 4: Two, Jon Stewart.
- 4:39Speaker 5: You're getting an opportunity to not only be part of
- 4:42Speaker 5: the crafting of the legacy of the Black Green Lantern,
- 4:46Speaker 5: but also to bring him into people's homes. They're going
- 4:49Speaker 5: to invite him into people's homes. They're going to invite
- 4:51Speaker 5: them into their house and become his friend. And That's iconic. Like,
- 4:56Speaker 5: like you, you, you might only get one. Some people
- 4:59Speaker 5: don't even get the opportunity to do stuff of that magnitude,
- 5:02Speaker 5: but if you do, you probably are only going to
- 5:04Speaker 5: get that opportunity once. So, you know, like that meme says,
- 5:07Speaker 5: if you get the ball ball, like, like they, they
- 5:10Speaker 5: gave me the ball. So you got a ball, like,
- 5:11Speaker 5: like we, this is what we have to do. And
- 5:14Speaker 5: then lastly, just the team that was behind it. I
- 5:18Speaker 5: actually started my writing career as Chris Monday's assistant on Ozark.
- 5:21Speaker 5: So being able to do that full circle moment to
- 5:25Speaker 5: come in as your assistant. And now I'm coming in
- 5:28Speaker 5: writing and co-executive producing.
- 5:30Speaker 1: That's one.
- 5:31Speaker 5: Two, when I first started writing, I first signed with
- 5:33Speaker 5: my reps. They made me make a list of all
- 5:35Speaker 5: the people that I wanted to work with. And the
- 5:37Speaker 5: number one person I wanted to work with on my
- 5:38Speaker 5: list was Damon Lindelof. So now I'm getting to work
- 5:41Speaker 5: with Damon Lindelof. Like there was nothing to say no to. Like,
- 5:45Speaker 5: and then finally, you know, you're getting to the comic
- 5:48Speaker 5: book space and especially like the comic book adaptation into television,
- 5:53Speaker 5: into film, there's not a lot of us there. And
- 5:56Speaker 5: so you're coming into this and being allowed, given the opportunity,
- 6:01Speaker 5: the door is open for you to be able to
- 6:03Speaker 5: come in and be in spaces that were traditionally not,
- 6:06Speaker 5: there was just nothing to say no to. Like it was,
- 6:09Speaker 5: you say yes a hundred times over. And I would
- 6:10Speaker 5: say yes a thousand times over again.
- 6:12Speaker 2: I love how much you opened that answer with the
- 6:16Speaker 2: idea of like the audience being the ones who are
- 6:19Speaker 2: opening their home for the storytelling. So the opportunity is
- 6:22Speaker 2: special to you for all these very personal specific reasons,
- 6:25Speaker 2: but it's also because you are, you hold the medium
- 6:29Speaker 2: of television in such a way that you understand the
- 6:31Speaker 2: might that the audience has and making the story actually
- 6:34Speaker 2: have resonance beyond what you put on the screen. So
- 6:38Speaker 2: with that in mind, um, We're about a week away
- 6:41Speaker 2: from the episode, that first episode we seen drop with you,
- 6:45Speaker 2: like the primary writer on that story on episode four,
- 6:48Speaker 2: on episode three. And how are you feeling now about
- 6:52Speaker 2: the reaction to that episode and also episode four, for
- 6:55Speaker 2: that matter?
- 6:56Speaker 4: Ooh, child.
- 6:58Speaker 6: This has been... I love it. That's how you feel.
- 7:04Speaker 1: We see it.
- 7:07Speaker 6: YouTube.com slash ForAllNerdsTV. Y'all got to be on.
- 7:10Speaker 1: It to see this. Let me say your name comes
- 7:13Speaker 1: up on some searches on YouTube, boy. I was looking
- 7:17Speaker 1: for interviews and I was.
- 7:18Speaker 4: Like, wow.
- 7:20Speaker 1: Headlines are disrespectful sometimes.
- 7:22Speaker 5: It has been a week. I was just mentioning to
- 7:27Speaker 5: somebody that I would have thought that... the most controversial
- 7:32Speaker 5: part of this episode was the parenting. That's what I
- 7:36Speaker 5: thought the debate was.
- 7:37Speaker 4: Going to be.
- 7:38Speaker 5: I thought the debate was going to be, are Jon
- 7:41Speaker 5: Stewart's parents abusers or are they raising the next Greenland?
- 7:44Speaker 5: I thought that was going to be the entirety of
- 7:46Speaker 5: the debate. That being said, it's been a week. It's
- 7:53Speaker 5: been one of the most beautiful weeks. I have felt
- 7:57Speaker 5: an extreme amount of gratitude.
- 8:02Speaker 4: And I felt so many people lift me up.
- 8:05Speaker 5: And obviously it was like critically acclaimed in ways that
- 8:08Speaker 5: I was like, not prepared for heart wise. Like, oh
- 8:11Speaker 5: my God, I didn't, I thought it was a good episode.
- 8:14Speaker 5: I didn't think it was that. And then of course
- 8:17Speaker 5: there's been the other side of it, which you're just like,
- 8:19Speaker 5: you know, I, probably should get tougher skin. But like,
- 8:24Speaker 5: I was like, oh man, guys, I wasn't trying to
- 8:26Speaker 5: shit on Hal Jordan.
- 8:27Speaker 4: I don't feel that way at all. And you're about
- 8:28Speaker 4: to see it like next.
- 8:30Speaker 5: But I also recognize that something unique, besides the fact,
- 8:35Speaker 5: all the racial components, all of that, yes. But there's
- 8:38Speaker 5: something unique about what we're doing that hasn't been happening
- 8:41Speaker 5: for about 15 years, which is we're dropping once a week.
- 8:45Speaker 5: And so- You're having to sit with these ideas and
- 8:50Speaker 5: discuss them. I don't know if I think the conversation
- 8:53Speaker 5: happens the way it does if people are able to
- 8:56Speaker 5: press play on four and five and six and seven
- 8:59Speaker 5: immediately after 103. You know what I mean? People have
- 9:04Speaker 5: the opportunity to do that. I don't think some of
- 9:07Speaker 5: the reaction would have been what it is, but they didn't.
- 9:11Speaker 4: And so now I'm just sitting here. You couldn't do that.
- 9:13Speaker 4: You have to keep waiting.
- 9:15Speaker 5: And so I already saw it die down as soon
- 9:16Speaker 5: as four came out. Some of it died down as
- 9:18Speaker 5: soon as four came out because, you know, four comes
- 9:20Speaker 5: out and obviously Alex is extraordinarily competent. And it's very
- 9:25Speaker 5: clear that we love him and think him exactly. We
- 9:28Speaker 5: think of him the exact way the comics think of him.
- 9:30Speaker 4: Like he's one of the greatest Green Lanterns of all time.
- 9:34Speaker 5: And it also was like, and Ben, I look at
- 9:36Speaker 5: you because I know that you've been in a writer's room.
- 9:38Speaker 4: It's also like, oh, I don't think y'all understand how
- 9:39Speaker 4: writer's rooms work.
- 9:40Speaker 1: No, they don't.
- 9:41Speaker 4: All of this together.
- 9:42Speaker 2: Yes.
- 9:43Speaker 4: So it wasn't like I went off by myself and
- 9:45Speaker 4: made this story up.
- 9:46Speaker 2: And then they.
- 9:47Speaker 5: Were like, oh, let me do something. We made it
- 9:50Speaker 5: all together. It's all supposed to be of a piece. So,
- 9:53Speaker 5: you know, I just hope that by the end, even
- 9:55Speaker 5: by next week, I hope that they realize, oh, this
- 9:57Speaker 5: is all the people.
- 9:59Speaker 4: Who feel hurt. by three realize it was all part
- 10:03Speaker 4: of the puzzle.
- 10:04Speaker 2: I also want to note, like you said, you might
- 10:06Speaker 2: need to build a tougher skin, but I think that
- 10:08Speaker 2: being vulnerable is like very refreshing. I think being in a,
- 10:11Speaker 2: from a vulnerable space allows you to write the way
- 10:13Speaker 2: that you do. And the way that like, we have
- 10:17Speaker 2: spoken about how in so many ways, it's about how
- 10:20Speaker 2: people be like, why are y'all looking at it that way?
- 10:22Speaker 2: But I think it's refreshing too, to think about how
- 10:24Speaker 2: being this multifaceted person and not one note and like,
- 10:28Speaker 2: he can make mistakes and we can have criticism about
- 10:30Speaker 2: him and that's good yeah it actually pulled us into
- 10:33Speaker 2: the next episode and wanting to see more story from.
- 10:36Speaker 3: Yeah yeah it's and it's good to it's a question
- 10:39Speaker 3: saying not to necessarily like you have to be so
- 10:41Speaker 3: stoic about everything right like because it's also you don't
- 10:43Speaker 3: have to be arrogant about it like you should be
- 10:45Speaker 3: able to be open and understand and express that and
- 10:49Speaker 3: speaking of arrogance what do you actually feel about hal
- 10:51Speaker 3: jordan I think Al.
- 10:53Speaker 4: Jordan is arrogant, right?
- 10:54Speaker 5: And I think he's arrogant and he's a prick, but
- 10:59Speaker 5: he's also extraordinarily charming and really good at his job
- 11:02Speaker 5: and fucking smart and instinctual.
- 11:06Speaker 4: In a way.
- 11:09Speaker 5: That creates a completely different lane for why he's the
- 11:13Speaker 5: Green Lantern he is and why John is the Green
- 11:15Speaker 5: Lantern he is. And those lanes don't cross, but they
- 11:18Speaker 5: are like the end to each other's yang in a
- 11:20Speaker 5: lot of ways.
- 11:23Speaker 4: And I think just like John is.
- 11:26Speaker 5: Having to learn some shit as seen in episode four,
- 11:29Speaker 5: like Hal is going to have to learn some shit
- 11:33Speaker 5: because we all have to learn some shit. And I
- 11:35Speaker 5: think that there's this idea when we're creating superheroes that
- 11:39Speaker 5: they come in and they're always right.
- 11:41Speaker 4: They're always correct. It's one of the things that I
- 11:43Speaker 4: think Gunn did really well.
- 11:45Speaker 5: With Superman, which was like, I'm on this very altruistic
- 11:50Speaker 5: path only to find out that my parents might not
- 11:53Speaker 5: have said some, like what they, the path they, like
- 11:56Speaker 5: the way that I've helped them put them on this pedestal,
- 11:59Speaker 5: they actually meant something a little bit different. Like, and
- 12:02Speaker 5: you have to like deal with that. And I think
- 12:04Speaker 5: there's this like, sometimes it's a little bit, I don't
- 12:11Speaker 5: want to call it like childlike, but for lack of
- 12:13Speaker 5: better words, this childlike belief that superheroes have to be
- 12:17Speaker 5: purposely altruistic and never have a flaw and never, because
- 12:22Speaker 5: that's what makes them super.
- 12:23Speaker 4: And I just disagree.
- 12:24Speaker 5: I think what makes superheroes worth it is that sometimes
- 12:28Speaker 5: they don't do it right. And sometimes their thought patterns
- 12:31Speaker 5: need to be challenged. And sometimes they get emotional or
- 12:37Speaker 5: they don't actually know the right thing to do. And
- 12:41Speaker 5: they are superheroes because they can course correct.
- 12:44Speaker 4: And do what they need to do.
- 12:45Speaker 5: But that's also how we get bad guys. Like bad
- 12:48Speaker 5: guys that feel like they're bad guys. We're following our
- 12:50Speaker 5: bad guys that also have a point. So if we
- 12:53Speaker 5: give everybody a point of view and everybody a flaw,
- 12:55Speaker 5: then we're making more kinetic storytelling. And I just, that,
- 13:00Speaker 5: that pushback on Hal is that he's imperfect, but Hal's
- 13:03Speaker 5: always been imperfect.
- 13:05Speaker 4: And this like, and he's an asshole. I don't know what,
- 13:08Speaker 4: and who is the more charming asshole than Kyle Chandler?
- 13:11Speaker 6: Like it's, You know, he's him. Yeah, we get it.
- 13:15Speaker 3: I mean, from what I'm hearing is it seems like
- 13:18Speaker 3: you do not have a vendetta against Hal Jordan, the character.
- 13:21Speaker 4: I love him.
- 13:23Speaker 2: Right.
- 13:23Speaker 6: And it sounds like you guys just want to make
- 13:25Speaker 6: an interesting story.
- 13:26Speaker 2: How about that?
- 13:27Speaker 4: How about that?
- 13:29Speaker 5: But, you know, I really don't think that by the
- 13:32Speaker 5: end of I don't think that by episode by the
- 13:35Speaker 5: end of next this upcoming week's episode, I don't think
- 13:38Speaker 5: anybody will think that.
- 13:39Speaker 4: But surely by the end of the season.
- 13:41Speaker 5: I just think it's hard when you're used to being
- 13:43Speaker 5: able to press play and see what happens next to
- 13:46Speaker 5: sit with the idea of character development is we just.
- 13:49Speaker 4: Haven't had to do it for so long.
- 13:52Speaker 1: And journeys. And like you said, I think one of
- 13:56Speaker 1: the best advice I got from Michael Green was when
- 13:58Speaker 1: he told me people will never understand what you do.
- 14:01Speaker 1: And it's just like, that's what I mean. People don't understand.
- 14:05Speaker 1: And because like you say, we've gotten such an instant,
- 14:08Speaker 1: reaction culture. People don't understand how storytelling works and how
- 14:12Speaker 1: characters have to go on journeys. We've seen this criticism
- 14:15Speaker 1: that John is not Dwayne McDuffie's JLU version of John.
- 14:22Speaker 1: My response to them is, slow down. He's on a journey.
- 14:29Speaker 4: That's right.
- 14:30Speaker 5: I cannot say what it is, but there is a
- 14:32Speaker 5: big criticism online about something with John's character that literally
- 14:37Speaker 5: answered in six.
- 14:38Speaker 4: And I'm just like, I'm sitting here waiting.
- 14:40Speaker 1: I'm just like, can we ask? We have one of
- 14:45Speaker 1: them that I keep seeing that drives me really wild
- 14:48Speaker 1: because I feel like people are just not paying attention
- 14:51Speaker 1: is that John is always obedient and that he obeys
- 14:54Speaker 1: everything that's been said. And I'm like, you are obviously
- 14:58Speaker 1: not paying attention. It was really made clear in four,
- 15:01Speaker 1: but it's been made clear in every episode that in
- 15:03Speaker 1: his past, surely he did, but no, things happen in
- 15:07Speaker 1: his past, like that sniper incident and other things where
- 15:10Speaker 1: he grows. That's one of those criticisms. I'm like, man, y'all.
- 15:18Speaker 4: I think that's, that's astute. And I think it's right.
- 15:20Speaker 5: And I think that it's also like, you know, one
- 15:25Speaker 5: of my pet peeves in anything, like this is not just,
- 15:29Speaker 5: obviously this isn't even lanterns, but just like the minute
- 15:32Speaker 5: that we get a black character, if they're doing really well,
- 15:35Speaker 5: they're a lawyer or a civil rights activist or blah, blah, blah.
- 15:37Speaker 4: And I'm like, bitch, can they do something else?
- 15:39Speaker 6: Like, can they, can they, can they work at McDonald's? Like,
- 15:42Speaker 6: you know what I mean?
- 15:43Speaker 5: But I didn't, um, the reason that I think a
- 15:48Speaker 5: lot of times people like lean towards that is because
- 15:52Speaker 5: it comes from a really good place. It comes from
- 15:54Speaker 5: this place of wanting to present black characters as something
- 15:58Speaker 5: different than we have traditionally seen them as, which I'm
- 16:01Speaker 5: all for. Um, and also, wanting to make sure that
- 16:07Speaker 5: because there, there are tropes surrounding like a teacher and
- 16:11Speaker 5: there are tropes surrounding like a civil rights activist.
- 16:13Speaker 4: So if they, the character ends up saying something that's.
- 16:15Speaker 5: Like political, that the trope of what they do gives
- 16:21Speaker 5: us the excuse to be able to put some of
- 16:22Speaker 5: those words in their mouths.
- 16:23Speaker 4: Right. I think that's all well and fine. And I
- 16:26Speaker 4: get it. But for me, what we did with.
- 16:30Speaker 5: John is we said, Hey, Here are the things that
- 16:34Speaker 5: happened in his childhood that created the person you are
- 16:37Speaker 5: going to see. This is the things that happened in
- 16:40Speaker 5: his childhood that created who you're seeing right now.
- 16:42Speaker 4: And now we're going on a journey with him.
- 16:44Speaker 5: Now that you understand why he acts the way he does,
- 16:47Speaker 5: we are going on a journey with him for you
- 16:49Speaker 5: to then discover how he becomes.
- 16:52Speaker 4: Who he becomes.
- 16:53Speaker 5: So we didn't do the trope of, oh, this is blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
- 16:57Speaker 5: So that you, it was just like cookie cutter.
- 16:58Speaker 4: This is who he is. So now you understand why
- 17:00Speaker 4: he acts like this. We took you on that journey
- 17:02Speaker 4: with him.
- 17:03Speaker 5: And like, you are going to see him become the
- 17:07Speaker 5: Jon Stewart that we created him to be. But it
- 17:10Speaker 5: started the day his dad got bubbled and it is
- 17:13Speaker 5: going on just like much of our stories as human
- 17:16Speaker 5: beings started in the city we were born in, the
- 17:18Speaker 5: parents we were born to. Like what we did, like
- 17:21Speaker 5: just like any full, fully fledged character starts someplace as
- 17:24Speaker 5: opposed to giving him a journey. And I'm really proud
- 17:26Speaker 5: that we did that. I'm grateful for that. Like, you know,
- 17:29Speaker 5: not to get out of the DCU, but we know
- 17:32Speaker 5: Wolverine's entire backstory. We know what started before the adamantium.
- 17:36Speaker 5: We know who he was talking to before and then
- 17:38Speaker 5: what's created this, what he like, we know all of that.
- 17:41Speaker 5: And that's why he was such a fan favorite. It's
- 17:43Speaker 5: because we didn't just like slap on a, he was
- 17:46Speaker 5: a mutant.
- 17:46Speaker 4: His parents didn't like him. So they sent him to
- 17:48Speaker 4: Xavier school. Like they were like, it was.
- 17:51Speaker 1: They put drama.
- 17:53Speaker 4: It was drama.
- 17:54Speaker 5: And that's why there's like affection for Wolverine as a,
- 17:59Speaker 5: as a character. And I think that, I hope that
- 18:02Speaker 5: we're able to create the same thing with Jon Stewart.
- 18:05Speaker 2: Yeah, absolutely.
- 18:06Speaker 3: And first of all, we're beyond pleased that you've actually
- 18:10Speaker 3: worked to flesh out Jon Stewart's backstory because there's extremely
- 18:12Speaker 3: little there.
- 18:13Speaker 6: We've understood that.
- 18:15Speaker 4: People disagree, which I didn't know.
- 18:19Speaker 3: Well, you're helping, and part of the, I gotta call
- 18:23Speaker 3: it fanboy anchors, because you're setting canon for this character. So, like,
- 18:26Speaker 3: you're setting things that are, yes, and that's another thing, like,
- 18:29Speaker 3: these characters are not static. Like, they're gonna get changed,
- 18:32Speaker 3: there's other stories that come out, and I think that's
- 18:35Speaker 3: part of the the issue and the challenge like people
- 18:37Speaker 3: don't realize that like you're creating a canon for this
- 18:40Speaker 3: version of the character there could be another version 10
- 18:43Speaker 3: years from now that does something a little different just
- 18:45Speaker 3: like how there's mad different versions of how there's different
- 18:47Speaker 3: things everywhere and that idea that you can't be fluid
- 18:52Speaker 3: and and mold these characters into the story and the
- 18:55Speaker 3: and the messages you're trying to tell anyway like i
- 18:58Speaker 3: think that's odd that's odd to me that's odd from
- 19:01Speaker 3: it It's odd from a critical perspective. It's odd from
- 19:04Speaker 3: a creative perspective.
- 19:04Speaker 2: It's just odd.
- 19:05Speaker 4: Yeah, I think... I agree.
- 19:09Speaker 5: I think that the place that I do give grace,
- 19:12Speaker 5: a lot of grace, even though people ain't giving me grace,
- 19:15Speaker 5: is because I think that it's just been such a
- 19:18Speaker 5: long time since people have seen this character be given
- 19:23Speaker 5: a platform. And yeah, we had the Ryan Reynolds movie. And,
- 19:27Speaker 5: you know, that obviously... It was.
- 19:30Speaker 4: What it was.
- 19:31Speaker 5: But I think there are a lot of people that
- 19:33Speaker 5: were waiting for this. And I think that I was
- 19:37Speaker 5: actually having this conversation with my little brother about another
- 19:40Speaker 5: superhero movie. When you've been waiting for something for so long,
- 19:44Speaker 5: your thoughts and your hopes and your dreams about it
- 19:46Speaker 5: become so outsized that I don't know if there's anything
- 19:49Speaker 5: that could have happened. that everybody would have been pleased
- 19:52Speaker 5: because your imagination is running so big about all the
- 19:56Speaker 5: things that could be. But I really do. I really,
- 20:00Speaker 5: it's from the bottom of my heart. I believe that
- 20:02Speaker 5: at the end of this year or the end of
- 20:04Speaker 5: the season, a lot of, this chatter is going to
- 20:09Speaker 5: go away. And I think in its totality, it is
- 20:11Speaker 5: going to be like, that was a really good season
- 20:12Speaker 5: of television.
- 20:15Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 20:15Speaker 2: I feel, I feel like we all have been like
- 20:18Speaker 2: thinking about the origin story of Jon Stewart and like
- 20:22Speaker 2: how in depth that is, how many different levels that's
- 20:24Speaker 2: been hit. And I think one of the things that
- 20:27Speaker 2: was kind of fun and Tatiana has spoken about how
- 20:29Speaker 2: it was like breaking the third, fourth wall, whenever Hal
- 20:32Speaker 2: was like, oh yeah, the regular old superhero origin story,
- 20:36Speaker 2: both my parents are dead now kind of thing. That's
- 20:39Speaker 2: not true for Jon Stewart. He had a whole family.
- 20:41Speaker 2: And even though he grew up with like mother, father,
- 20:44Speaker 2: both brothers, he speaks to feeling lonely within that existence
- 20:48Speaker 2: during the interview with the Guardian. So one, thank you
- 20:51Speaker 2: for giving him a whole story and breaking him out
- 20:53Speaker 2: of that mold of like fairy tales and all the
- 20:56Speaker 2: other tropes that give you an orphan. But also do you,
- 21:00Speaker 2: What can you tell us about what we might see
- 21:02Speaker 2: about his relationship with his brothers in the present day
- 21:05Speaker 2: in 2016, possibly or 2026? Are we going to see
- 21:09Speaker 2: anything around that going forward? Yes.
- 21:15Speaker 5: So I can't tell you much because you will see things,
- 21:18Speaker 5: but I think that.
- 21:22Speaker 4: John's journey is a whole.
- 21:26Speaker 5: And everything you saw in three, bought for its life
- 21:31Speaker 5: to be on that screen because it has to in
- 21:33Speaker 5: some way inform something that's going to happen later so
- 21:39Speaker 5: um everything is informing something later so you'll you'll you'll see.
- 21:45Speaker 2: Them okay Okay.
- 21:49Speaker 3: We were happy to hear that because there's clearly a
- 21:51Speaker 3: critical component of who John is and just the story itself.
- 21:55Speaker 3: And as we speak about episode three, we're just thinking
- 21:58Speaker 3: about all the different messages, you know, the messages that
- 22:02Speaker 3: you had up in there. It was insane, not just because, like,
- 22:06Speaker 3: you know, it was stuff as Black people, as the
- 22:08Speaker 3: fellow Blacks.
- 22:09Speaker 6: The Black delegation understood, but it's also like.
- 22:12Speaker 3: you are imparting this on an audience of people who
- 22:15Speaker 3: have no idea, right? That they don't know the whole
- 22:17Speaker 3: black excellence theory and all this other stuff. And you're
- 22:20Speaker 3: also doing this in the concept of a writer's room.
- 22:23Speaker 3: You're doing it with really good writers and people who,
- 22:25Speaker 3: you know, shout out to Lindelof, you know, our boy,
- 22:28Speaker 3: but you're still trying to compare, explain this to people
- 22:31Speaker 3: who may not have lived it and don't necessarily have
- 22:33Speaker 3: the intrinsic understanding. So like, how do you explain those
- 22:36Speaker 3: theories of, everything that was talked about, particularly in that episode,
- 22:39Speaker 3: you know, the Black excellence, the, you know, doing things
- 22:43Speaker 3: twice as much to get half as far, like all
- 22:44Speaker 3: of this. Like, how do you go about not just
- 22:47Speaker 3: explaining it, but then imparting that in your writing?
- 22:50Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 22:51Speaker 5: So shout out to Shonda Rhimes because the minute that
- 22:54Speaker 5: we started talking about it, Damon was like, that was
- 22:57Speaker 5: on an episode of Scandal.
- 22:58Speaker 4: And I was like, yes, it was. You are right, Damon.
- 23:03Speaker 6: Papa Pope.
- 23:03Speaker 2: Thank you, Papa Pope.
- 23:04Speaker 4: Yes!
- 23:05Speaker 2: Boy.
- 23:10Speaker 4: But, you know, it was... I feel like in the
- 23:14Speaker 4: writer's room, it was pretty.
- 23:18Speaker 5: Regardless of what every... And I think there was, like,
- 23:21Speaker 5: a really diverse... There were very diverse thoughts about.
- 23:30Speaker 4: the outcome of the idea of black excellence. Right.
- 23:34Speaker 5: Which I think the conversations we have in the community, but,
- 23:39Speaker 5: but I felt like everybody had a touch.
- 23:42Speaker 4: Point to at least what the theory was.
- 23:45Speaker 1: Right.
- 23:46Speaker 4: Many of, of course we discussed like, like athletics a lot.
- 23:50Speaker 1: Right.
- 23:50Speaker 5: So we discussed like Tiger Woods and the Williams sisters
- 23:54Speaker 5: and various other like athletes who had been trained from
- 23:58Speaker 5: the time that they were little to be the greatest
- 23:59Speaker 5: of all time. And of course we went on to
- 24:02Speaker 5: the Jacksons because Michael was coming out soon. Well, we
- 24:04Speaker 5: didn't realize Michael was coming out when it did, when
- 24:06Speaker 5: it actually helped us because everybody remembered like Joe Jackson.
- 24:10Speaker 5: But being able to have kind of those touch points
- 24:13Speaker 5: and talk about it in those types of ways really
- 24:17Speaker 5: helped to make maybe people who hadn't had that experience
- 24:21Speaker 5: in their lives or known anybody like that understand it.
- 24:25Speaker 5: But I think what was really great about having Damon
- 24:27Speaker 5: and Chris in the room is they're aware of what
- 24:30Speaker 5: they're unaware of. And so Justin and I were able
- 24:33Speaker 5: to really lead the conversations in the room about the
- 24:36Speaker 5: ways that we had experienced things and things we had experienced.
- 24:39Speaker 5: And we were not the only people, we were the
- 24:41Speaker 5: only black people in the room, but we were not
- 24:42Speaker 5: the only people of color in the room. So there
- 24:44Speaker 5: were other people of color in the room who were
- 24:45Speaker 5: able to be like, hey, this is similar to this
- 24:47Speaker 5: and my culture is similar to this and that. And
- 24:49Speaker 5: so those conversations, those weren't even debates, they were conversations,
- 24:53Speaker 5: were really robust.
- 24:55Speaker 4: And they were.
- 24:56Speaker 5: And maybe somebody might say, well, I think it's abuse.
- 24:59Speaker 4: And some people would be like, It ain't right, but
- 25:03Speaker 4: I wouldn't go as far as abuse.
- 25:05Speaker 5: And like, and like having, and then you see eyes open,
- 25:08Speaker 5: like you don't think that's abuse. And then somebody else
- 25:09Speaker 5: would be like, no, I think it's like this, this, this,
- 25:11Speaker 5: and this. And if not, then how would they, this,
- 25:14Speaker 5: the Williams sisters haven't able to get out of Compton.
- 25:16Speaker 5: And then somebody else would be like, maybe they could
- 25:18Speaker 5: have been teachers. Like you start going back and forth
- 25:21Speaker 5: about all. And it really was beautiful. And it was
- 25:23Speaker 5: like this, this way of having a conversation that again,
- 25:27Speaker 5: I thought was going to end up being the big
- 25:29Speaker 5: conversation around the episode.
- 25:32Speaker 4: So, being able to kind of lead.
- 25:36Speaker 5: Have that, have that discourse and then be able to
- 25:39Speaker 5: come in and say, okay, not only writing what feels
- 25:42Speaker 5: true to me, but also into account some of the
- 25:45Speaker 5: things that I heard as we were discussing and some
- 25:47Speaker 5: people's perspectives of this and how this might look to
- 25:50Speaker 5: somebody who has no idea about this, who is in quotations,
- 25:53Speaker 5: an alien in our culture.
- 25:54Speaker 4: Like what Liana represent, like being able to bring all
- 25:58Speaker 4: of that in at once. It just, it was kind
- 26:01Speaker 4: of amazing.
- 26:03Speaker 5: So to say that all of it was my, obviously
- 26:06Speaker 5: I wrote it.
- 26:07Speaker 4: But a lot of it is just crystallizing all of
- 26:11Speaker 4: these really robust conversations we had concerning it in the room.
- 26:15Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 26:16Speaker 3: And it sounds like, like a collective, a collaboration and
- 26:19Speaker 3: a collective response to kind of the trauma of parents
- 26:22Speaker 3: as well. Right. And how they pass it on to
- 26:24Speaker 3: their children, the cost and the pain of that excellence.
- 26:27Speaker 3: And we commend you guys for including that, you know,
- 26:29Speaker 3: and then obviously to.
- 26:30Speaker 6: You directly as, because it spoke to us.
- 26:33Speaker 3: Like it actually, when you said that this spurred a
- 26:35Speaker 3: lot of robust conversation, it did for us as well.
- 26:38Speaker 3: We started sharing our own personal experiences and histories and,
- 26:42Speaker 3: you know, like, you know, Ben's whole thing about getting,
- 26:44Speaker 3: you know, being the only black kid in a group
- 26:46Speaker 3: of white boys and not doing anything, but getting stopped
- 26:48Speaker 3: by the police and police only asking him, me, to
- 26:51Speaker 3: this day, not being able to touch anything that resembles
- 26:53Speaker 3: a gun.
- 26:53Speaker 6: You know, Portia had an anecdote. Like it's always.
- 26:58Speaker 3: But it's interesting that, you know, you say that this
- 27:00Speaker 3: was collaborative amongst many different cultures, you know, because there
- 27:03Speaker 3: are similarities across. That's really interesting that it was a
- 27:06Speaker 3: collaboration of different people who had different thoughts.
- 27:10Speaker 5: And I'm not going to say that I brought anybody
- 27:13Speaker 5: over to the black side.
- 27:15Speaker 4: But what I will say is that you could tell.
- 27:17Speaker 5: And it's probably one of the things that I'll hold
- 27:21Speaker 5: with me for the remainder of my career is you
- 27:24Speaker 5: could tell that. every single one of us had never
- 27:28Speaker 5: heard something somebody else said.
- 27:30Speaker 4: So it was like when.
- 27:32Speaker 5: Somebody, when we would like, you know, I'm not saying
- 27:36Speaker 5: that I would raise children the way Earl Woods or.
- 27:42Speaker 4: Richard Williams did, but I get what he was trying
- 27:45Speaker 4: to do. Like, I get it. I wouldn't run that play,
- 27:49Speaker 4: but I get what he was trying to do. And
- 27:52Speaker 4: so like hearing... hearing people feel very strongly in opposition,
- 28:00Speaker 4: like I.
- 28:02Speaker 5: Don't know that I had ever heard that. And I
- 28:04Speaker 5: was like, damn, when I'm, if I'm sitting here and
- 28:06Speaker 5: I'm sitting here to listen, then I'm like, shit, I
- 28:09Speaker 5: do get that. I have a completely different POV of it,
- 28:12Speaker 5: but I do understand from where you're standing, how that looks.
- 28:16Speaker 4: So can you hear where I'm standing from?
- 28:18Speaker 5: And then like, we would talk about that and getting
- 28:20Speaker 5: the opportunity to like encapsulate all of that in an
- 28:24Speaker 5: hour of TV.
- 28:26Speaker 4: That's it's magic important work. Like it feels really special.
- 28:32Speaker 1: All right. The question that has been going around and,
- 28:35Speaker 1: you know, you did refer to this, but if we
- 28:38Speaker 1: talked about it and we've been trying to explain it
- 28:40Speaker 1: to some people who've been leaving comments about this, about how,
- 28:43Speaker 1: you know, in this world, this is green lantern is
- 28:45Speaker 1: bigger than Michael Jackson, like bigger than LeBron James, you know,
- 28:48Speaker 1: bigger than whoever you want to talk about this green lantern. So,
- 28:52Speaker 1: you know, as a black mother though, and you know,
- 28:55Speaker 1: you are a mother of Would you have trusted this
- 28:57Speaker 1: alien when she comes down and is like, you know,
- 28:59Speaker 1: your son could be space Jesus Scott? You know what
- 29:06Speaker 1: I'm saying?
- 29:07Speaker 6: That's what they did.
- 29:07Speaker 2: That's what Leanna did.
- 29:08Speaker 6: Your man can.
- 29:09Speaker 1: Come down and, you know, he can fly, you know? Like,
- 29:13Speaker 1: your son would be able to fly.
- 29:15Speaker 6: She said, your son is Neo.
- 29:17Speaker 4: Your son is Neo. Well, okay, so that's interesting.
- 29:20Speaker 5: Using the Neo, using the Neo context of it, would
- 29:23Speaker 5: you have trusted that man to take that pill?
- 29:27Speaker 4: Like, I guess, you know what I mean?
- 29:28Speaker 5: Yes.
- 29:29Speaker 6: Would you have done it?
- 29:31Speaker 5: And I think most people, because they get to see
- 29:33Speaker 5: the superhero aspect of it, are like, Fuck yeah, I'm
- 29:35Speaker 5: going to get out this matrix.
- 29:37Speaker 4: But when you're watching a mother make it on behalf
- 29:39Speaker 4: of her child. they're like, oh, mothers. And you're like, no,
- 29:43Speaker 4: because you would have taken the pill. Like you would
- 29:45Speaker 4: have done it.
- 29:46Speaker 5: But also the thing that I always want to keep
- 29:48Speaker 5: in context with Bernadette, and then I'll go back and
- 29:49Speaker 5: answer the exact question. She was in crisis herself. Her
- 29:55Speaker 5: family was in the middle of crisis. Her family was
- 29:58Speaker 5: falling apart. Her husband was not in the house. He
- 30:01Speaker 5: was doing dangerous shit. He was, he was acting completely
- 30:05Speaker 5: out of character. As far as they were concerned, he
- 30:07Speaker 5: had lost touch with the reality. He was having a
- 30:08Speaker 5: psychotic break. Like, and now everything he said, he saw
- 30:12Speaker 5: showing up at your doorstep. Like this is you to
- 30:16Speaker 5: get into the mind of Bernadette at that moment. It's,
- 30:19Speaker 5: I personally do not know if I had her exact,
- 30:23Speaker 5: to answer the question, if I was in her exact shoes,
- 30:28Speaker 5: there's this new like green lantern that has now come
- 30:33Speaker 5: to earth. Now we know that we're not alone using
- 30:37Speaker 5: Carrie's words from episode one.
- 30:40Speaker 4: Okay, fine. We know we're not alone now.
- 30:42Speaker 5: There's this guy that does this kind of, everything my
- 30:45Speaker 5: husband has been going crazy about, he did say that
- 30:48Speaker 5: in that interview, but it still don't make no goddamn sense.
- 30:51Speaker 4: Then this lady shows up and I have to believe something.
- 30:58Speaker 5: Like I have to believe something because everything is pointing
- 31:01Speaker 5: that direction. Like, and then, you know, I think what
- 31:05Speaker 5: we did is we, and there was a scene that
- 31:07Speaker 5: was written that was not shot, but like, She goes,
- 31:11Speaker 5: we had a scene where Bernadette goes into a public
- 31:13Speaker 5: library and checks out all of these books about all
- 31:16Speaker 5: of these.
- 31:16Speaker 4: Because she's a teacher.
- 31:18Speaker 5: She sits and she just, with all her kids in tow,
- 31:20Speaker 5: but before John Sr. is allowed to come back to
- 31:22Speaker 5: the house, sits and reads up about everything. Because like,
- 31:25Speaker 5: what is the plausibility of all of this? Not only
- 31:27Speaker 5: of what we just saw, but could we even make
- 31:30Speaker 5: one of our kids a Green Lantern? Like, is it
- 31:32Speaker 5: possible to train them?
- 31:34Speaker 4: Fear out of somebody. And it was just like such
- 31:36Speaker 4: a small.
- 31:37Speaker 5: Scene and we could get it out in dialogue that
- 31:38Speaker 5: we did that. We, that we didn't include it for.
- 31:41Speaker 4: Time, but like, okay. She would, I do it.
- 31:46Speaker 5: My, my answer here right now in this moment is no,
- 31:50Speaker 5: but I also am not her.
- 31:52Speaker 4: I wasn't in that position.
- 31:53Speaker 5: And when I've been in some really crazy scenarios, I've
- 31:56Speaker 5: done some weird shit. Like, if you just think about
- 31:59Speaker 5: when your car, like your car is about to hit
- 32:01Speaker 5: somebody in front of you and you got a passenger
- 32:04Speaker 5: and you put your arm in front of the passenger,
- 32:05Speaker 5: what the fuck that arm going to do? That arm
- 32:08Speaker 5: won't stop nobody from flying out the dang windshield.
- 32:11Speaker 1: Right.
- 32:12Speaker 5: Just what you instinctively think to do is to protect,
- 32:15Speaker 5: even if it's not going to do anything or it
- 32:17Speaker 5: might break your whole arm off. It's just you have
- 32:19Speaker 5: these instinctual reflexes to do certain things. And I feel
- 32:24Speaker 5: like that was just Bernadette.
- 32:26Speaker 4: Would that be mine or yours?
- 32:27Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 32:28Speaker 4: A guardian hasn't come to our house. We haven't been
- 32:30Speaker 4: bubbled up. I don't know what I would do.
- 32:33Speaker 5: And like, she didn't have Green Lantern comics. She didn't
- 32:35Speaker 5: know that's what this was. Like, I don't know what
- 32:39Speaker 5: I would do without the knowledge of what was happening
- 32:41Speaker 5: to me.
- 32:43Speaker 4: Okay.
- 32:44Speaker 2: So while we're still in this zone where we're positing
- 32:46Speaker 2: the alien, right? Can we talk about Liana and what's
- 32:51Speaker 2: up with her? Clearly, she's lying to everyone. And besides being...
- 32:58Speaker 2: Because it's a mystery.
- 32:59Speaker 4: We get it.
- 33:00Speaker 2: You got to figure out what's the clues beneath all
- 33:03Speaker 2: the lines. We're fine. We're going on this journey. But
- 33:06Speaker 2: then she goes this extra step in episode four. And
- 33:11Speaker 2: she basically tells... John Stewart Jr., that she's disappointed in
- 33:17Speaker 2: him for coming and being like his father and then
- 33:21Speaker 2: also questioning Bernadette's like ability to train him into being
- 33:25Speaker 2: who he needs to be to be a lantern. So
- 33:28Speaker 2: do we have permission to beat her ass? Like, would
- 33:31Speaker 2: you beat her ass in this situation?
- 33:32Speaker 4: I mean, here's the thing. Would I beat her ass?
- 33:35Speaker 5: I wouldn't be the Guardians ass just because they could
- 33:37Speaker 5: kill me.
- 33:38Speaker 4: But what am I going to do?
- 33:40Speaker 1: Like, I can't.
- 33:41Speaker 4: I got to like try to have them.
- 33:42Speaker 1: Man, I got to find out. I'm at the front.
- 33:45Speaker 1: You know what I mean? I'm at the front. But
- 33:48Speaker 1: that's one of.
- 33:49Speaker 5: My favorite things about about the entire Green Lantern series
- 33:52Speaker 5: is the Guardians are the best bad guys. Like they
- 33:56Speaker 5: are always the people fucking stuff up in life or
- 33:58Speaker 5: the entities fucking stuff up. And so that's what I'm
- 34:02Speaker 5: really hoping is like there was this idea that we
- 34:05Speaker 5: were villainizing how then there was, you know, this thing that,
- 34:08Speaker 5: you know, we were making Bernadette the ultimate bad guy.
- 34:11Speaker 5: And we just keep seeing that the people pulling the
- 34:16Speaker 5: marionette strings.
- 34:19Speaker 4: Are who traditionally do it in the Green Lantern lore,
- 34:21Speaker 4: which is the Guardians. So, you know, continue to watch.
- 34:24Speaker 4: But I think.
- 34:28Speaker 5: The Guardians, much like the comics, are emotionless creatures. And
- 34:36Speaker 5: they are just always trying to find the shortest distance
- 34:39Speaker 5: to what they want to do. And in this particular moment,
- 34:43Speaker 5: they want Hal Jordan gone. And whatever the shortest distance
- 34:45Speaker 5: to that is, they're going to do it.
- 34:48Speaker 2: It's interesting that using another person and telling him to
- 34:52Speaker 2: steal the ring is the shortest distance to.
- 34:56Speaker 4: Because it doesn't make them look bad. Like, do you
- 34:58Speaker 4: know what I mean? Like, it's... They can... It wasn't us.
- 35:02Speaker 2: But they can make the Black man look bad.
- 35:04Speaker 4: Right.
- 35:04Speaker 6: Say it again.
- 35:05Speaker 4: They can make the Black man look bad. Right. So,
- 35:09Speaker 4: just keep watching.
- 35:10Speaker 2: Just keep watching.
- 35:12Speaker 1: Man, like I said, my military dad, you know, was stripped,
- 35:15Speaker 1: you know, put hands, feet, whatever on me was, you know,
- 35:20Speaker 1: not the best, but I felt that. Like, I was
- 35:23Speaker 1: ready to, you know, do all kinds of things. You
- 35:25Speaker 1: are not going to disrespect my dad no matter what.
- 35:29Speaker 1: You know, none of my family are you going to
- 35:31Speaker 1: ever speak about you out your mind as, you know, alien. Like, no.
- 35:36Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 35:36Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm going to find out. I might get a
- 35:39Speaker 1: little like Hal real quick. And on that note, I
- 35:42Speaker 1: have to ask, because this has been, you know, like
- 35:45Speaker 1: you said, it's so funny. Week to week, we've been
- 35:48Speaker 1: seeing everything. You know, people, you know, oh, you hate Hal.
- 35:51Speaker 1: You hate John. You hate the Guardian. You hate this person.
- 35:55Speaker 1: You hate Bernadette. You know, everyone. So one thing we've seen,
- 35:59Speaker 1: and we have to ask, because, you know, my man said,
- 36:01Speaker 1: I don't even like jazz music. Me too. Do you
- 36:05Speaker 1: feel that he's racist? Hal Jordan, you know, xenophobic or
- 36:09Speaker 1: is this just a bit of an act? Yeah. I mean,
- 36:11Speaker 1: even the, you know, the alien he's, I don't hang
- 36:14Speaker 1: out with the rest of the core that he's made
- 36:17Speaker 1: a lot of wild statements.
- 36:19Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 36:20Speaker 5: Yes. I, my personal opinion is I think that Hal
- 36:25Speaker 5: is a man of a certain age and I don't
- 36:28Speaker 5: think that he considers himself racist. I don't think I
- 36:31Speaker 5: consider him him racist in the traditional sense.
- 36:34Speaker 6: Like, you know what I'm saying?
- 36:37Speaker 5: I don't I don't think I don't think that I
- 36:39Speaker 5: think if he heard somebody use a slur racial.
- 36:44Speaker 4: Epithet, he wouldn't.
- 36:46Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 36:47Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 36:47Speaker 4: And then say, I hate jazz music.
- 36:49Speaker 5: Like, because he doesn't equate them to be the same thing. Because, like,
- 36:53Speaker 5: he's just a man of a certain age. And I
- 36:55Speaker 5: think the Hal Jordan that we created wouldn't think he
- 36:58Speaker 5: was racist because he's like, I'm Green Lantern. I was
- 37:01Speaker 5: just sleeping with an entire different species in space.
- 37:05Speaker 4: Like, what are you even saying?
- 37:08Speaker 5: But I do think that his isolation has.
- 37:12Speaker 4: Made him thin. I didn't mean to.
- 37:14Speaker 1: No, I'm just, I know. Thing is like, like Tatiana
- 37:16Speaker 1: referred to, I grew up in Houston, Texas. I went
- 37:18Speaker 1: to a school that was like the Madden school where,
- 37:21Speaker 1: you know, I was bussed out of third ward and
- 37:23Speaker 1: all black neighborhood to a white school. My best friend
- 37:26Speaker 1: from day one is a little Jewish kid who I'm
- 37:27Speaker 1: still tight with to this day. And so it's like,
- 37:30Speaker 1: I grew up with those white people, you know? And
- 37:32Speaker 1: it's like, that's why I didn't even.
- 37:34Speaker 4: It's complex.
- 37:35Speaker 1: Yes.
- 37:36Speaker 4: People are talking about it and I'm from Florida.
- 37:38Speaker 1: Yes.
- 37:39Speaker 5: And so it's like, I know people who have really
- 37:42Speaker 5: bad takes on race. and would give me the fucking
- 37:45Speaker 5: kidney tomorrow if I did. And it's just complex. But
- 37:52Speaker 5: in that, one of the things that I learned, which
- 37:54Speaker 5: I'm sure you probably learned, Ben, and I don't want
- 37:56Speaker 5: to say that y'all didn't learn it either, but it's
- 37:57Speaker 5: just because he just shared it with me, is there
- 38:02Speaker 5: would be moments where maybe I had explained something that
- 38:05Speaker 5: had happened to me. And they would be like, oh,
- 38:06Speaker 5: I don't think such and such was being like that.
- 38:08Speaker 5: Or I don't think that's what it was. And then
- 38:12Speaker 5: At some point along the way, they would be with
- 38:14Speaker 5: me when that thing happened and you would see the
- 38:17Speaker 5: light bulb go off and.
- 38:18Speaker 4: They'd be like, did they just?
- 38:21Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 38:22Speaker 4: And you're like, this is what I've been explaining to you.
- 38:24Speaker 5: And they're like, oh, no, no, I'm not standing for that.
- 38:28Speaker 4: And then they go up and they like, that's who
- 38:30Speaker 4: I think happened. Like I think that who me.
- 38:33Speaker 5: Personally, I'm not saying that's what the room discuss or
- 38:34Speaker 5: anything like that. I just think that how has lived
- 38:37Speaker 5: such an isolated life and he's lived it because of
- 38:40Speaker 5: his own traumas and because of the things that have
- 38:42Speaker 5: happened to him. And because it's really hard to be
- 38:43Speaker 5: the first of anything like it's, and he's the, in
- 38:46Speaker 5: our world, he is the first green lantern on earth.
- 38:49Speaker 5: Like I think that he has isolated himself. He doesn't
- 38:52Speaker 5: have a lot of people. He doesn't, he don't.
- 38:54Speaker 4: Trust a lot of people.
- 38:55Speaker 5: If people have corrected him, he would probably feel really
- 38:59Speaker 5: bad about it, but there's not a lot of people
- 39:00Speaker 5: that he would like correct him. And so this relationship
- 39:03Speaker 5: that is blossoming with John might be the first time,
- 39:07Speaker 5: like might be the first time that he's had real
- 39:09Speaker 5: friendship with anybody since Sinestro. Also think that the hymn
- 39:15Speaker 5: before this moment, is a different him. It's like what
- 39:19Speaker 5: we saw in that hologram. Like it's a, it's a
- 39:21Speaker 5: different him.
- 39:22Speaker 6: It's a different version of him.
- 39:24Speaker 5: And the world jades us sometimes. And I don't think that,
- 39:28Speaker 5: I don't think he is any more. jaded with John
- 39:32Speaker 5: as a black man than he is with all the
- 39:35Speaker 5: people he's seeing in Rushville. And he's like, they're all
- 39:38Speaker 5: probably related. Like, you know, small towns like this, everybody's cousins.
- 39:42Speaker 4: Like, he's doing the same thing to them that he
- 39:46Speaker 4: does to John. And it's prickly and it fucking sucks.
- 39:50Speaker 4: But it's who he is.
- 39:53Speaker 6: What I'm hearing is he's an equal opportunity hater.
- 39:55Speaker 4: He's an equal opportunity hater.
- 39:58Speaker 1: Okay.
- 39:58Speaker 2: All right.
- 39:59Speaker 6: That seems very much aligned with his character.
- 40:01Speaker 3: And, you know, I think one of the things we've
- 40:04Speaker 3: been talking about on this podcast and on every episode
- 40:06Speaker 3: we've been reviewing is just the fact that everything you've
- 40:09Speaker 3: said has led to a larger world building and probably.
- 40:13Speaker 6: And again, like this really isn't hyperbole.
- 40:15Speaker 3: This is like the best superhero quote show that we've
- 40:18Speaker 3: seen in a very long time, let alone superhero property,
- 40:21Speaker 3: because it also has that very groundedness, even though it's
- 40:25Speaker 3: meant to span galaxies.
- 40:27Speaker 2: Right.
- 40:27Speaker 3: And again, When you are dealing and trying to mold
- 40:30Speaker 3: something like this, where it has this so far ranging implications, right?
- 40:34Speaker 3: But you're also trying to bring it more home and
- 40:36Speaker 3: grounded and.
- 40:37Speaker 1: Real, right?
- 40:38Speaker 6: How do you strike that balance?
- 40:39Speaker 3: Especially that balance of what people want to see, who
- 40:42Speaker 3: are just like straight comic books, and then what people
- 40:44Speaker 3: need to see when you talk about TV.
- 40:47Speaker 5: I think it was a hard needle to thread. And
- 40:49Speaker 5: we discussed a lot. Like, you know, like, that's like,
- 40:54Speaker 5: you know, is this a moment that he uses his
- 41:00Speaker 5: service weapon? Is there a better way to do this?
- 41:04Speaker 5: Is there a more interesting way to do this? I
- 41:08Speaker 5: wish there was a mathematical way we could have attacked it,
- 41:11Speaker 5: but there wasn't. It was really just us sitting and
- 41:14Speaker 5: being like, he has.
- 41:16Speaker 4: To go to space. It is not for him to
- 41:19Speaker 4: go to space.
- 41:19Speaker 5: Because he cannot realistically be doing this job and not
- 41:24Speaker 5: be in space. But then also like, the events of
- 41:27Speaker 5: Rushville that we're in right now are like 48 hours,
- 41:30Speaker 5: 72 hours.
- 41:31Speaker 4: So he could have not gone to faith for 72 hours.
- 41:34Speaker 5: Like, are we like, you're doing all of that work
- 41:37Speaker 5: and all of that math and trying to figure it out.
- 41:39Speaker 5: And there wasn't like every seven scenes, he needs to
- 41:42Speaker 5: use the ring. It was like, when would he have to,
- 41:45Speaker 5: when could he, when is it smart?
- 41:48Speaker 4: Like if did he, he had.
- 41:50Speaker 5: No idea that they were going to end up in Rushville.
- 41:52Speaker 5: He didn't know that the hologram was going to come
- 41:54Speaker 5: give that. was going to come give that notice. So,
- 41:59Speaker 5: you know, in our version, they, he doesn't have a
- 42:01Speaker 5: pocket dimension quite literally in his pocket. Like he has
- 42:04Speaker 5: to go to his house to go get that, that lantern.
- 42:06Speaker 5: So no, it wasn't with him because he did not
- 42:09Speaker 5: know that that was going to happen.
- 42:10Speaker 4: This came out of nowhere. Like it's like, we're just
- 42:13Speaker 4: always trying to figure it out. Yeah.
- 42:15Speaker 3: And like this, it's a derivative of what we've been
- 42:18Speaker 3: talking about, about the process in the writing room. And
- 42:20Speaker 3: the reason why I'm asking that, because I just want
- 42:22Speaker 3: people to understand the complexities of it and the fact
- 42:25Speaker 3: that it's not just you just pulling out your ass.
- 42:27Speaker 2: Right.
- 42:27Speaker 6: Like or I want to piss people off today. I'm
- 42:29Speaker 6: going to do this.
- 42:30Speaker 5: Like we are on character and story like we're not
- 42:34Speaker 5: purposely trying to like. when we're grounding it, what we
- 42:39Speaker 5: meant by that, and at least what I meant by that,
- 42:41Speaker 5: is what is.
- 42:42Speaker 4: The next logical thing that this character would do? Right?
- 42:46Speaker 5: So, even though the splashiest thing might be that he
- 42:50Speaker 5: would take out this ring and fucking make it carnival, like,
- 42:55Speaker 5: is that how Jordan would do in this moment, and
- 42:57Speaker 5: would it be the smartest thing for him to do?
- 43:00Speaker 4: Like, that's what we mean by it.
- 43:02Speaker 5: And so, you know, I really do believe that some
- 43:05Speaker 5: of that criticism is going to go away as it's
- 43:07Speaker 5: it's already started to last night when john makes the
- 43:10Speaker 5: construct of to dig the tunnel yeah but um i
- 43:15Speaker 5: think it's just going to continue.
- 43:16Speaker 2: To go away well not to take us into formulas
- 43:19Speaker 2: and calculations behind writing but there is a rule in
- 43:23Speaker 2: three in comedy that says that we need at least
- 43:26Speaker 2: one more call car jump.
- 43:31Speaker 4: Just to make it work. Do you guys get another one?
- 43:33Speaker 4: I got to think about that. I don't know if
- 43:34Speaker 4: he gets another one or not. I have to think. Maybe.
- 43:36Speaker 2: Yeah. Like our question was like, maybe John will flip
- 43:39Speaker 2: it and he'll be the one to jump out of
- 43:40Speaker 2: the car this time. Is that something that we'll get
- 43:44Speaker 2: like a final call back to in some way?
- 43:47Speaker 4: That's funny. I'm sitting here thinking, I'm like, just help
- 43:50Speaker 4: do it again. I can't remember.
- 43:51Speaker 5: I truly cannot remember if he does it again, but
- 43:53Speaker 5: I have loved the car jump. Like I have somebody today.
- 43:58Speaker 5: And it said, it was a picture of Hal rolling
- 44:00Speaker 5: out of the car. And it said, if I send
- 44:02Speaker 5: this to you, no, I'm letting you handle this shit.
- 44:03Speaker 1: On your own. The one I saw was it was
- 44:06Speaker 1: a GIF of somebody. It was somebody else completely jumping
- 44:09Speaker 1: out of a car. And they were like, Hal's solution
- 44:11Speaker 1: to everything.
- 44:16Speaker 4: Jesus, Lord.
- 44:17Speaker 2: This is why he has no friends. All his solutions
- 44:21Speaker 2: are to jump out of the car.
- 44:22Speaker 4: You just go jump out of cars every time, friends.
- 44:25Speaker 3: For every minor inconvenience though that's what makes it so
- 44:28Speaker 3: funny like i guess i just.
- 44:30Speaker 1: Gotta it's almost like cars out of gas.
- 44:33Speaker 7: Thing like it's almost like fill it up nah i've
- 44:38Speaker 7: done another one he's like grand theft auto and straight
- 44:42Speaker 7: through life boy.
- 44:44Speaker 1: That'd be hilarious to be honest i love it Okay.
- 44:49Speaker 1: One thing, though, the amount of seeding that y'all have
- 44:52Speaker 1: done and the reactions on the internet, which have just
- 44:56Speaker 1: been like, man, I've seen every theory ever. you know,
- 45:00Speaker 1: every character is related to the Green Lantern or one
- 45:03Speaker 1: of the cores in some way, shape, or form. But, like,
- 45:06Speaker 1: some of the things you have dropped, you know, there's
- 45:09Speaker 1: a single shot of a black hole on the wall
- 45:12Speaker 1: with some lights in a particular configuration and, you know,
- 45:16Speaker 1: bottles of mustard around certain characters and eyeballs turning red
- 45:20Speaker 1: in the preview shot, you know. Was all of this
- 45:23Speaker 1: intentional and did you expect all of these reactions?
- 45:29Speaker 5: Um.
- 45:30Speaker 4: Some intentional, some not.
- 45:33Speaker 1: Okay.
- 45:33Speaker 2: Which ones?
- 45:34Speaker 1: Exactly. Do tell.
- 45:40Speaker 3: I liken it to Jordan, the director, where he did
- 45:46Speaker 3: Get Out. And people, we have all these theories about, oh,
- 45:49Speaker 3: the colorful cereal in the milk, he's separating it because
- 45:51Speaker 3: you don't want the people, the colors, and the whites together.
- 45:54Speaker 3: And he was just like, nah, son, I just did
- 45:55Speaker 3: it because it was cool. I thought it was weird shit.
- 45:58Speaker 3: So we're thinking, is there some of that with you?
- 46:01Speaker 6: Yeah, definitely.
- 46:02Speaker 5: But as I read some of it, I'm like, wow,
- 46:05Speaker 5: people are really paying attention. They're not on their phones.
- 46:08Speaker 4: Like that's what I'm coming away from it.
- 46:10Speaker 5: I'm like, oh, we're not battling third screen on this.
- 46:12Speaker 5: Like there is, people are really paying attention. I will
- 46:15Speaker 5: say that some is intentional, most is not. But it's
- 46:21Speaker 5: been so, something that I think that has happened again
- 46:24Speaker 5: in the past like 15 years with like the influx
- 46:26Speaker 5: of superhero content is that people want to be the
- 46:32Speaker 5: person to figure it out. So everybody is looking at
- 46:35Speaker 5: everything with extra scrutiny because I want to be the
- 46:38Speaker 5: person who posted that I figured this out before everybody else.
- 46:42Speaker 4: And I don't know, there's something really lovely about that.
- 46:45Speaker 5: Like that people are so intently watching things and so
- 46:48Speaker 5: deeply thinking about things. I do sometimes think that it
- 46:50Speaker 5: takes them out of the episode. And I'm like, you're
- 46:52Speaker 5: looking for something that's not there representing to you the
- 46:55Speaker 5: things that need.
- 46:56Speaker 4: To be there. Like just watch. But the other part
- 46:58Speaker 4: of me is like, but I love how closely you're watching.
- 47:01Speaker 6: So yeah.
- 47:03Speaker 4: That's all I can say about that.
- 47:05Speaker 2: All right.
- 47:07Speaker 3: So she basically said y'all doing these Mr. Fantastic stretches
- 47:11Speaker 3: on half this shit.
- 47:12Speaker 4: Some of it is not. Like, I've seen a couple
- 47:15Speaker 4: things that I'm like, gosh, y'all figured out the season.
- 47:18Speaker 6: Like, how did you guys do this?
- 47:20Speaker 4: But then there's been others and I'm like, not even
- 47:23Speaker 4: freaking close.
- 47:24Speaker 5: Like, it's not even close.
- 47:28Speaker 4: But, you know, you'll see. Okay.
- 47:35Speaker 2: You've said that the Green Lantern rings are sexist and
- 47:39Speaker 2: that possibly is that why Bernadette wasn't chosen? Because is
- 47:45Speaker 2: there more to the ring not being able to understand
- 47:48Speaker 2: what a Black woman can go through and that's why
- 47:50Speaker 2: we don't see Bernadette? Like, why did Senior get the
- 47:54Speaker 2: light and not Bernadette.
- 47:56Speaker 6: Bernadette seems like the real writer in the room.
- 47:58Speaker 4: She's the real writer.
- 47:58Speaker 2: And the Guardian calls her a formidable woman.
- 48:01Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 48:02Speaker 5: So, the interesting thing is that we were kicking in
- 48:05Speaker 5: when we said that, and y'all do not understand the
- 48:07Speaker 5: way people have been like, don't you know about Katma?
- 48:10Speaker 5: And I'm like, yeah, I know that it's not really sexist.
- 48:14Speaker 4: Because, what? Yeah, like, so.
- 48:19Speaker 6: Yes, I.
- 48:20Speaker 5: Know that it's not really sexist. The point that we
- 48:23Speaker 5: were making as we were kicking was that Bernadette's a
- 48:26Speaker 5: bad bitch. We just like the fact that she is
- 48:29Speaker 5: so brave.
- 48:32Speaker 6: That's it.
- 48:33Speaker 4: But guys, Katma's out there. There are Joes out there.
- 48:36Speaker 4: There are so many Green Lanterns.
- 48:39Speaker 2: And I'm very aware of.
- 48:40Speaker 4: Them because, contrary to popular belief, I've read the comics. Wow.
- 48:45Speaker 4: I know them.
- 48:45Speaker 1: You would think, you know.
- 48:46Speaker 2: Astonishing information.
- 48:47Speaker 1: An executive writer on a show that, you know, involves
- 48:49Speaker 1: Lanterns might have read a few Green Lantern comics.
- 48:52Speaker 2: Maybe look at the source material.
- 48:54Speaker 4: Yeah, but we really were just kiki-ing.
- 48:56Speaker 5: And the thing that, like, the thing that we were
- 48:59Speaker 5: talking about and the thing that I feel like about
- 49:02Speaker 5: Bernadette and even maybe even the reigns choosing of, you know,
- 49:05Speaker 5: having to choose for the first time, because I've also
- 49:08Speaker 5: seen a lot of people say.
- 49:09Speaker 4: You know, how could you say that this.
- 49:11Speaker 5: Is Earth's first Green Lantern? Because there wasn't. I was like, yeah, well,
- 49:15Speaker 5: technically the first one was not, didn't have to report
- 49:18Speaker 5: to Ola. That was like, he was told by a
- 49:20Speaker 5: flame to go make his ring. Like, this is the
- 49:23Speaker 5: first time that it's had to pick in this way or.
- 49:25Speaker 4: How it was the first time it had to pick
- 49:27Speaker 4: in that way.
- 49:28Speaker 5: So, for me, I just feel like after how Jordan
- 49:34Speaker 5: was picked, everything, even with the Guardians and how even
- 49:38Speaker 5: they're handling Jon Stewart, they're, they're having to reconsider because human,
- 49:43Speaker 5: not reconsider, but consider that earth is a little bit different.
- 49:47Speaker 5: So if the, if the ring is picking from earth,
- 49:50Speaker 5: humans are not entirely like other species.
- 49:53Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 49:55Speaker 4: And things that need to be taken.
- 49:56Speaker 5: Into consideration here are a little bit different. Again, we
- 49:59Speaker 5: were laughing, we were kicking, we weren't like, it wasn't like,
- 50:03Speaker 5: I didn't know that there were.
- 50:04Speaker 1: Women in the, but you know, It's like when people
- 50:10Speaker 1: tell us, you know, they're corrupting Hal Jordan. And I'm
- 50:12Speaker 1: like the same man who dated an underage alien, you know,
- 50:15Speaker 1: or why about the man who blew up coast city, uh,
- 50:23Speaker 1: killed most of the lantern core. Yeah.
- 50:26Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 50:29Speaker 5: The next episode, it was clear.
- 50:32Speaker 4: We didn't believe that.
- 50:32Speaker 5: Like it was again, I think if you're in a
- 50:37Speaker 5: binge format, There's no time to be that upset and
- 50:42Speaker 5: to ruminate in that way. You watch the next episode
- 50:44Speaker 5: and it goes away immediately. We're not in binge format
- 50:47Speaker 5: and thank God for it because it gives people time
- 50:49Speaker 5: to talk and have these really, really great conversations that
- 50:53Speaker 5: show us a lot about ourselves and each other. But
- 50:57Speaker 5: I think as unfair as it felt, I think that
- 51:01Speaker 5: it was good because I think it gave everybody an
- 51:03Speaker 5: opportunity like, oh yeah, this is what television is when
- 51:06Speaker 5: you watch week to week. And you have to sit
- 51:08Speaker 5: and allow for character development and allow things to stew.
- 51:13Speaker 1: And on that note, because this is one of the...
- 51:16Speaker 1: It's hilarious how we have seen these comments be on
- 51:21Speaker 1: both opposite sides. People have said Lanterns is anti-white, and
- 51:25Speaker 1: then they've said it's anti-Black. And we know that it's
- 51:28Speaker 1: neither of those things, obviously. But besides the fact that
- 51:32Speaker 1: people are having to sit and stew and think and
- 51:35Speaker 1: discuss things that they're not used to discussing... Why do
- 51:37Speaker 1: you feel that they're getting such, you know, extreme reactions?
- 51:42Speaker 5: I think the extreme reactions are because the world is
- 51:46Speaker 5: a bit wonky right now. And I think that in
- 51:50Speaker 5: the past, you know, 10, 15 years, we, well, I
- 51:54Speaker 5: won't even say that.
- 51:55Speaker 4: Where are we?
- 51:56Speaker 3: 2026?
- 51:56Speaker 4: Yes. That's like 10-ish years.
- 52:00Speaker 5: There's been so much going on in our world, in
- 52:04Speaker 5: our country, really, but in our world that, TV has
- 52:08Speaker 5: been largely used for escapism because I don't, there's a
- 52:13Speaker 5: lot happening. Can I just have a break?
- 52:15Speaker 1: You know what I mean?
- 52:16Speaker 4: And so our show is doing something that.
- 52:19Speaker 5: Used to be a little bit more commonplace 10 to
- 52:22Speaker 5: 15 years ago prior to that, where we're saying, we're
- 52:29Speaker 5: making statements about stuff. We're not saying, and we're making
- 52:33Speaker 5: vastly different statements, right? Like when we're not saying that
- 52:36Speaker 5: this is what we believe, but we're having a character
- 52:38Speaker 5: believe this and a character believe that, and they have
- 52:41Speaker 5: the debate about those things. And we just haven't been
- 52:45Speaker 5: doing that much lately in TV. So I think this
- 52:48Speaker 5: show coming out in 2019, around the time Watchmen comes out,
- 52:52Speaker 5: obviously Watchmen was also, people had a lot to say
- 52:56Speaker 5: about that, but we were in the middle of a
- 52:58Speaker 5: moment where we were talking about that a lot more often.
- 53:02Speaker 4: And so I feel like it's the way.
- 53:05Speaker 5: That it's exploded is just because we're not talking about
- 53:08Speaker 5: these types of things as much anymore. And again, we're
- 53:11Speaker 5: not taking any hard stance on anything. We're just like
- 53:15Speaker 5: characters present the way they feel about things. And then
- 53:20Speaker 5: we got, they have to move through the world with that,
- 53:22Speaker 5: with that thought process and allow the world to either prove.
- 53:24Speaker 4: Them wrong or prove them right.
- 53:26Speaker 5: But I think it's been a long time since we,
- 53:29Speaker 5: allowed characters to just kind of freely do that on television.
- 53:32Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 53:33Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 53:33Speaker 3: And when you see the characters and really the actors
- 53:36Speaker 3: behind these characters, when they're breathing life into your words.
- 53:39Speaker 2: Like, how are you feeling?
- 53:40Speaker 3: Like, especially Aaron Pierre, like this man has been delivering
- 53:44Speaker 3: these lines, line at the line. And like, even most
- 53:47Speaker 3: recently when he said, Yeah. Must be making like that.
- 53:51Speaker 3: That was chef kiss because like that just shows like
- 53:54Speaker 3: the dedication in the writing, but also in the delivery
- 53:56Speaker 3: of the writing. So when you have been watching back
- 54:00Speaker 3: these episodes or maybe you've been seen to all this,
- 54:02Speaker 3: but like, what's like been the biggest revelation about John's
- 54:05Speaker 3: character that Aaron has shown you as an actor?
- 54:08Speaker 4: I think Aaron is so talented and so good, so sweet.
- 54:11Speaker 4: And I love him dearly. And I think.
- 54:13Speaker 5: What Aaron is, I think what Aaron is giving us
- 54:18Speaker 5: is he's really the next superstar. He's just the, he
- 54:22Speaker 5: is the next superhero in every way possible. Like what
- 54:25Speaker 5: he does, that's not even necessarily going to be Jon
- 54:28Speaker 5: Stewart in the future. Like his, the next franchise, he doesn't,
- 54:32Speaker 5: like he is delivering what I think is some of
- 54:36Speaker 5: the best subtextual acting that I've seen in a really
- 54:38Speaker 5: long time.
- 54:39Speaker 4: It's, it's not even always what he's saying. It's what's
- 54:41Speaker 4: under what he's saying. It's the way he cuts his eyes.
- 54:44Speaker 4: It's the way that he like, It really helps them
- 54:48Speaker 4: having them colorful eyeballs. Like, it's like, you know what
- 54:53Speaker 4: I mean?
- 54:53Speaker 5: So I think Aaron, Aaron coming in with the dedication
- 55:00Speaker 5: that he has had, not only to the character, but
- 55:02Speaker 5: also to the nuances of the character.
- 55:06Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 55:06Speaker 5: Has taken what you write and you think is good
- 55:10Speaker 5: to great. And it's not because of any special gifting
- 55:14Speaker 5: that you have as a writer.
- 55:15Speaker 4: It's because that you gave it to a gifted performer.
- 55:21Speaker 1: One thing that we've been distressing and we always discuss
- 55:24Speaker 1: on For All Nerds a lot of times is how much,
- 55:27Speaker 1: you know, copaganda there is out there. And especially with
- 55:30Speaker 1: superhero projects, sadly, a lot of it just falls into that,
- 55:34Speaker 1: you know, supporting of copaganda, fascism, you know, when people
- 55:38Speaker 1: don't really examine these things. And so one thing we
- 55:41Speaker 1: wanted to do is really thank you, you know, for
- 55:44Speaker 1: making sure that a show about space cops is examining this.
- 55:48Speaker 1: We even had to have to ask the question this week,
- 55:50Speaker 1: you know, is this show copaganda or not?
- 55:53Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 55:53Speaker 1: We feel like it's offering at least, you know, making
- 55:57Speaker 1: sure that people question the idea of cops and police
- 56:00Speaker 1: and the systems and the institutions. And how important was
- 56:03Speaker 1: that to you?
- 56:04Speaker 4: Very important. And I can't say much more.
- 56:08Speaker 5: Hmm.
- 56:09Speaker 4: Why? I hope that you'll be proud.
- 56:14Speaker 6: Vanessa, we was in the room with you.
- 56:15Speaker 1: I promise you.
- 56:16Speaker 6: We were sitting like this on the wall. We know.
- 56:20Speaker 4: I hope that you'll be proud.
- 56:23Speaker 6: I think we was on the right track.
- 56:25Speaker 1: Man, that's beautiful.
- 56:26Speaker 5: Even to varying degrees, also consider how. Which is Sinestro
- 56:35Speaker 5: killed a boss and he had to Turn Sinestro in
- 56:40Speaker 5: and that's still his guy. As complicated as that all is,
- 56:43Speaker 5: that's still his guy.
- 56:44Speaker 4: And.
- 56:45Speaker 1: As we live.
- 56:53Speaker 4: You know what I mean?
- 56:53Speaker 5: Like, Kyle is brave enough to say, I don't trust
- 56:55Speaker 5: those guys.
- 56:56Speaker 4: I think they're corrupt. And he's right.
- 57:00Speaker 5: And now the world has seen that he's right. Like,
- 57:02Speaker 5: I'm not even telling the Guardians what we're doing down
- 57:04Speaker 5: here because I don't trust them. Like, they don't... I
- 57:07Speaker 5: don't believe that... the commissioner is doing.
- 57:11Speaker 4: Is always right. So yeah, just keep watching.
- 57:15Speaker 5: And it's, that's probably one of my favorite things about
- 57:18Speaker 5: how is even if a person were to disagree with
- 57:22Speaker 5: what he believes is right and wrong, how only does.
- 57:24Speaker 4: What he believes is right.
- 57:28Speaker 1: And that's one of my theories and one of our
- 57:30Speaker 1: theories about it is that, you know, Sinestro has found
- 57:33Speaker 1: out something about the Guardians because, you know, it ain't nothing. Because,
- 57:36Speaker 1: you know, look, the one that we know is trash.
- 57:38Speaker 1: I'll say it again and again. Can't stand a lying liar.
- 57:41Speaker 1: So and I mean, she said, oh, you know, I'm
- 57:46Speaker 1: sending up reports on you. This man ain't updated his hologram.
- 57:49Speaker 5: How?
- 57:50Speaker 1: Oh, yeah.
- 57:51Speaker 4: I thought a meme or somebody like.
- 57:54Speaker 5: What reports is Al sending about John?
- 57:56Speaker 4: How it don't even look like he write good. Somebody
- 57:58Speaker 4: told me that, but I was dying laughing.
- 58:02Speaker 1: Yeah, so, no, we are, you know, happy for all
- 58:05Speaker 1: this and happy to see that because that is, you know,
- 58:08Speaker 1: so beautiful because, yeah, I trust none of them. They
- 58:11Speaker 1: all liar liars right now.
- 58:13Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 58:14Speaker 6: Well.
- 58:16Speaker 2: We've been asking and throwing so many questions at you.
- 58:19Speaker 2: And so we have like a final larger question before
- 58:22Speaker 2: we go into our rapid fire questions. So just prepping
- 58:26Speaker 2: your mind for that. What sort of projects would you
- 58:28Speaker 2: like to take on in the future? Like we've been
- 58:29Speaker 2: talking this whole time about lanterns. Like this is what you,
- 58:32Speaker 2: like where you're in the middle of right now, but
- 58:34Speaker 2: you have such an interesting like history of things you've
- 58:38Speaker 2: been doing. There's who, I'm sure there's so many opportunities
- 58:40Speaker 2: that are on the table for you right now. Something
- 58:42Speaker 2: that you possibly could hint at, something you probably cannot. And,
- 58:47Speaker 2: you know, because we are who we are and we
- 58:49Speaker 2: have our own interests, are any of them possibly Pollywog related?
- 58:52Speaker 4: Not for me.
- 58:58Speaker 5: I was in the writer's room that it started for
- 59:00Speaker 5: season two of Why the Last Man and same for
- 59:03Speaker 5: Paper Girls.
- 59:05Speaker 4: And I love doing graphic novels. I have loved doing
- 59:08Speaker 4: comic books. Dr. Lantern. i'm giving comic books a break
- 59:12Speaker 4: comic book fans are mean.
- 59:13Speaker 5: I don't like like i was like this card.
- 59:17Speaker 1: I was like i'll send you a graphic novel you
- 59:19Speaker 1: know yeah but.
- 59:20Speaker 4: I what i do what.
- 59:22Speaker 5: I think if i come back into the comic space
- 59:24Speaker 5: or the genre space i would do like yeah or
- 59:26Speaker 5: stuff like that, stuff that have much shorter runs that
- 59:29Speaker 5: don't have like the decades and decades and decades of
- 59:33Speaker 5: lore behind them. Not because I don't feel like we
- 59:36Speaker 5: did a good job, but because I understand that people
- 59:38Speaker 5: are so deeply attached to whatever volume i love it.
- 59:44Speaker 6: Yeah you might want to look at that graphic.
- 59:46Speaker 1: You know i can send you a copy actually you
- 59:48Speaker 1: know you know since you know jimmy had limited.
- 59:51Speaker 5: You know so deeply attached to whatever version of the
- 59:55Speaker 5: character that they got when they were growing up or
- 59:56Speaker 5: when they you know first picked up that book um
- 1:00:01Speaker 5: and so for me i feel like.
- 1:00:07Speaker 2: That you need to take a break.
- 1:00:08Speaker 3: Listen, I need to.
- 1:00:10Speaker 5: Go to graphic novels that are shorter runs.
- 1:00:13Speaker 4: If I'm going to continue to do, to do genre
- 1:00:15Speaker 4: in this way.
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:00:17Speaker 5: Discussion shortly before this, I see you. We were having
- 1:00:22Speaker 5: a discussion before we started about video games and how
- 1:00:26Speaker 5: much like of a video game household.
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: Yes. Yeah.
- 1:00:31Speaker 4: So that's something that's starting to like interest me a bit.
- 1:00:33Speaker 2: Would you do animated things? Like Arcane is kind of
- 1:00:36Speaker 2: like video games.
- 1:00:37Speaker 4: I think I would. It's a completely different thing. Yes.
- 1:00:41Speaker 5: But I, you know, we were talking about before we
- 1:00:44Speaker 5: got on, like how I have a Pokemon and now
- 1:00:46Speaker 5: a Dragon Ball Z house.
- 1:00:48Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:00:49Speaker 4: A very big.
- 1:00:51Speaker 5: Also last year, I forgot to tell you guys this,
- 1:00:52Speaker 5: this is a very big Avatar house. So my son
- 1:00:56Speaker 5: was Aang last year, like full bald cap in school.
- 1:01:00Speaker 4: So cute.
- 1:01:00Speaker 6: That's cute.
- 1:01:02Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
- 1:01:04Speaker 5: So yeah, so we, that interests me in the future.
- 1:01:07Speaker 5: But then also, you know, my OG stuff is.
- 1:01:09Speaker 4: Like crime dramas. Crime dramas, yeah, yeah, yeah. Heists and
- 1:01:13Speaker 4: stuff like that.
- 1:01:13Speaker 5: So I don't, you know, I know some things that
- 1:01:16Speaker 5: are in the future. What can be discussed is nothing.
- 1:01:19Speaker 4: But some things are in the.
- 1:01:20Speaker 5: Future that are in like in the crime world, but genre,
- 1:01:23Speaker 5: I think I'm just going to lean more towards graphic novels.
- 1:01:26Speaker 4: And obviously I'm a huge Brian K. Vaughan fan.
- 1:01:31Speaker 6: Right.
- 1:01:31Speaker 3: I mean, to that, to that point portion, I would
- 1:01:34Speaker 3: love to see you in animated series. Like, I feel
- 1:01:36Speaker 3: like the golden age of animation, particularly the animation where
- 1:01:39Speaker 3: it's like, it might be a little above certain, certain ages,
- 1:01:43Speaker 3: but it's like, once you really learn about the concepts,
- 1:01:45Speaker 3: like you're like, wow, that was, that was raw.
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: Like that was fire.
- 1:01:48Speaker 6: We talk about X-Men 97. Like I was just going
- 1:01:51Speaker 6: to say.
- 1:01:51Speaker 5: So for, it was so exciting to show my son X-Men.
- 1:01:55Speaker 4: 97 because yeah. Oh gee. Um, Yeah, I love all
- 1:02:00Speaker 4: that stuff. And I feel like that's some of the, like,
- 1:02:02Speaker 4: but I don't know.
- 1:02:03Speaker 5: I feel like that's some of the best ways to introduce, again, television,
- 1:02:06Speaker 5: some of the best ways to introduce comic content to
- 1:02:09Speaker 5: make people who don't even have the knowledge or the
- 1:02:12Speaker 5: ability or reason to get to a comic book.
- 1:02:14Speaker 4: Store, right?
- 1:02:15Speaker 5: Like, it's, you are taking those comics and you're able
- 1:02:18Speaker 5: to do what they're able to do to sell on
- 1:02:22Speaker 5: television and you're inviting them in to become your friends
- 1:02:24Speaker 5: the same way you would if you were able to
- 1:02:26Speaker 5: go to a comic book store and go grab one.
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: No, straight up. That is. Man, you know, just everything
- 1:02:35Speaker 1: you have said today has been amazing. You know, thank
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: you so much. And it's so funny when you mentioned
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: Brian K. Vaughn, because one of the questions we didn't
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: get to was how I met Damon Lindelof, how me
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: and Tatiana met Damon Lindelof was. And I have another
- 1:02:50Speaker 1: one with Brian K. Vaughn, but how we met Damon
- 1:02:52Speaker 1: was at a Watchmen after party. And he's standing behind
- 1:02:55Speaker 1: the rope. He's like a few feet off from us.
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: And I see him and I recognize him, you know,
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: I was lost, you know, his God. So I'm like, Oh,
- 1:03:02Speaker 1: it's Damon, you know? And I'm like, Hey, come over here.
- 1:03:06Speaker 1: You know? And he walks over and I'm like, you know, hi,
- 1:03:08Speaker 1: I'm Ben Amin. This is Tatiana from For All Nerds.
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: I'm like, motherfucker, if you don't, if you fuck up this,
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: what you've done, because, you know, I think I've seen
- 1:03:15Speaker 1: the first or first three episodes of Watchmen, so I
- 1:03:18Speaker 1: was like, fuck this shit up right now. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:03:21Speaker 6: He ran that man down. I love it.
- 1:03:24Speaker 4: Well, that's how I found out about, I mean, you
- 1:03:26Speaker 4: guys know, Damon hit me.
- 1:03:27Speaker 5: He was like, hey, my friend Ben wants you to
- 1:03:29Speaker 5: come on. And this is my guy.
- 1:03:31Speaker 4: Like, I'm a personally vouch for this guy.
- 1:03:34Speaker 6: Like, this is like, oh, good.
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: Yeah, no, that's how, it's so funny to me how
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: that is because, you know, we've become friends. And, like,
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: the first thing, and he'll tell you the first word
- 1:03:43Speaker 1: out of my mouth was, motherfucker, if you don't, you know,
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: because I loved it so much. And I was like,
- 1:03:48Speaker 1: you know, and it was the same way I told
- 1:03:50Speaker 1: Michael Green and him when I met them. Because I'm like,
- 1:03:51Speaker 1: you have a responsibility. You know, you can't, you can't
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: kick open the door like this and not walk through it.
- 1:03:58Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:03:58Speaker 1: You know? And so, and they walked through it on
- 1:04:00Speaker 1: Watchmen and y'all walking through it on Lantern. So yeah.
- 1:04:04Speaker 4: Let me tell you something.
- 1:04:05Speaker 5: I love me some Damon. Like when I say I
- 1:04:07Speaker 5: love him, I love Damon. Um, a funny story. We
- 1:04:13Speaker 5: were sitting, it was actually the day we were filming
- 1:04:15Speaker 5: episode two and he came to set that day. And
- 1:04:17Speaker 5: I was both me and Monday were there for some reason.
- 1:04:19Speaker 5: I don't know why normally we didn't do the same days. And, um,
- 1:04:23Speaker 5: We were, I don't know how we got on the
- 1:04:25Speaker 5: topic of it, but we were talking about him growing
- 1:04:29Speaker 5: up in like schools that were majority black.
- 1:04:31Speaker 4: And he was like, yeah, they were like, oh, we're
- 1:04:32Speaker 4: talking about my son.
- 1:04:33Speaker 5: Cause my son has, my son's name is not, it
- 1:04:37Speaker 5: is now a popular name. So now it's like one
- 1:04:39Speaker 5: of those names where it's like when you were growing
- 1:04:40Speaker 5: up as a Brian C, Brian A, Brian L. So
- 1:04:43Speaker 5: we were talking about that. He was like, yeah, when
- 1:04:45Speaker 5: I was growing up, there were, there were like three Damons.
- 1:04:48Speaker 5: There was Damon C, Damon D, you know what they
- 1:04:50Speaker 5: called me? White Damon.
- 1:04:54Speaker 1: Because he's the only one I've ever met.
- 1:04:57Speaker 4: I say I fell out. So now sometimes when I
- 1:05:01Speaker 4: text him, I'll be like, what's up, White Damon?
- 1:05:03Speaker 7: I'm just calling you because I'm going to hit him that.
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: On the next email. Oh, my God.
- 1:05:08Speaker 2: Damon the White.
- 1:05:10Speaker 6: Damon the White. That's about it.
- 1:05:11Speaker 4: Damon the White. I love it.
- 1:05:15Speaker 5: I don't know, y'all, the way that that endeared me.
- 1:05:18Speaker 5: I was already endeared, but the way that endeared me
- 1:05:19Speaker 5: to Damon. And my son adores him.
- 1:05:23Speaker 1: Oh, man.
- 1:05:24Speaker 4: Adores him.
- 1:05:25Speaker 5: And so I put on Lost for him. He's in
- 1:05:26Speaker 5: the middle of Lost right now, actually, which he's obviously loving.
- 1:05:30Speaker 5: And I don't know how it didn't dawn on him
- 1:05:34Speaker 5: until like season three.
- 1:05:36Speaker 4: At the end of it, he was like, wait a second. Mr.
- 1:05:40Speaker 4: Damon wrote this show?
- 1:05:43Speaker 2: And I was like, yes.
- 1:05:46Speaker 4: And so we stopped in the middle to start watching it.
- 1:05:51Speaker 4: all over everything and he's like is mr.
- 1:05:55Speaker 5: Damon famous now i was like a little bit yes
- 1:06:00Speaker 5: he is a.
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: Little in a certain sector when i see him i'm like.
- 1:06:05Speaker 4: No i was like but i think it's.
- 1:06:07Speaker 5: Dawning on him now so like he's seen like a
- 1:06:09Speaker 5: lot and he's like oh shoot mr damon is like
- 1:06:12Speaker 5: a big deal like yeah but.
- 1:06:14Speaker 4: I i just i'm.
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: Same. No, like we, you know, I, and it was
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: so funny because I hit him up immediately after episode one.
- 1:06:24Speaker 1: I'm like, okay, bro, you got to come back on
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: the show. You haven't been on since Watchmen. He's like, oh,
- 1:06:28Speaker 1: I've said everything I had to say. You know, I'm like,
- 1:06:30Speaker 1: all right, well, I'm going to send you this Bradford
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: novel because you ain't got a copy of it. And
- 1:06:33Speaker 1: I'm like, once he reads it, I'm going to hit
- 1:06:34Speaker 1: him back and, you know, be like, got to get
- 1:06:35Speaker 1: him on. And then we saw episode three and I
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: was like, all right, Damon, you know, you got to
- 1:06:40Speaker 1: come back on. But if not, you know, what's up
- 1:06:41Speaker 1: with introducing us to Vanessa? And he just smooth, you know,
- 1:06:45Speaker 1: does the assist. He, you know, dodges the come back
- 1:06:48Speaker 1: on your show.
- 1:06:48Speaker 4: He's like, oh, well, you know, hi, Vanessa.
- 1:06:52Speaker 1: You know, that was Vanessa.
- 1:06:52Speaker 4: Because of how everything was, I didn't want to do
- 1:06:55Speaker 4: any more press. I was like, anything that I'm saying,
- 1:06:58Speaker 4: it's getting taken out of context. And I just want
- 1:07:01Speaker 4: to go sit down.
- 1:07:01Speaker 5: I want to go sit down, let people enjoy the
- 1:07:04Speaker 5: remainder of the series. I believe that at the remainder
- 1:07:07Speaker 5: of the series, everybody will come back to all the
- 1:07:09Speaker 5: press and they'll be like, oh, I get it.
- 1:07:12Speaker 4: Nobody's going to be as mad at the end. But
- 1:07:14Speaker 4: Damon's like, this is my friend.
- 1:07:15Speaker 1: Oh, man.
- 1:07:16Speaker 4: He was like, this is my friend. I can vouch.
- 1:07:20Speaker 4: And I was like, all right.
- 1:07:21Speaker 2: Yes.
- 1:07:22Speaker 3: See, like we're still, we're still friendly, but we still
- 1:07:24Speaker 3: gonna ask you the question.
- 1:07:25Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:07:26Speaker 6: You know, stuff like that. Like, yeah, yeah.
- 1:07:30Speaker 1: Okay. Yeah.
- 1:07:32Speaker 3: No, no.
- 1:07:34Speaker 1: And we want, you know, it's like, that's, that's why
- 1:07:36Speaker 1: we wanted Damon back on because, you know, we know
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: we're going to ask questions that other people won't ask sometimes.
- 1:07:41Speaker 1: And we just feel like these questions need to be
- 1:07:43Speaker 1: asked because they're being asked out there in the internet.
- 1:07:46Speaker 1: And so it's like, you got to ask them and, So, no.
- 1:07:49Speaker 1: Thank you, Damon. Thank you, Vanessa. You have survived the
- 1:07:53Speaker 1: Fall Nerds interview. You still have our Brat segment, our
- 1:07:57Speaker 1: rapid fire questions. Number one, Star Wars or Star Trek?
- 1:08:01Speaker 4: Star Wars.
- 1:08:02Speaker 1: I love it.
- 1:08:04Speaker 6: Okay. What would be your starter Pokemon?
- 1:08:08Speaker 2: You could choose up to three.
- 1:08:12Speaker 4: Okay.
- 1:08:13Speaker 6: First one that came to your head.
- 1:08:14Speaker 4: Okay.
- 1:08:15Speaker 1: Okay.
- 1:08:15Speaker 5: The first, obviously the first one that came to my
- 1:08:17Speaker 5: head was Pikachu, just because you just need your guy there.
- 1:08:20Speaker 4: You need an electric type there. Snorlax.
- 1:08:24Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:08:25Speaker 1: Good one.
- 1:08:25Speaker 4: I know that's so strange, but he's just my guy.
- 1:08:27Speaker 4: I like him a lot.
- 1:08:29Speaker 6: It's actually a really good one.
- 1:08:30Speaker 5: It could be any, it could be, it could be
- 1:08:32Speaker 5: any gender, but Snorlax in our house has a name.
- 1:08:34Speaker 4: So we don't have a real Snorlax. It's a stuffed Snorlax. Anyway, there,
- 1:08:39Speaker 4: cause there aren't real Snorlaxes, but whatever.
- 1:08:41Speaker 1: Um, One more.
- 1:08:44Speaker 6: You got one more.
- 1:08:45Speaker 4: Okay, one more.
- 1:08:48Speaker 2: Mewtwo.
- 1:08:50Speaker 6: Ooh, I got to put out the big joker. Whoa.
- 1:08:52Speaker 4: Because if you need a Pokemon, get the dude who
- 1:08:55Speaker 4: can get him done.
- 1:08:56Speaker 1: My God.
- 1:08:57Speaker 6: You can get anything done.
- 1:09:00Speaker 5: You can have a sleepy person and somebody who can
- 1:09:02Speaker 5: take care of me when sleepy stops is sleep.
- 1:09:06Speaker 6: That's like she brought out the nuclear option, Ben. Like, damn.
- 1:09:09Speaker 1: Straight up.
- 1:09:10Speaker 6: Straight, okay.
- 1:09:11Speaker 4: I have my pet. I had my sleepy guy, and
- 1:09:13Speaker 4: I had the one who could take care of everything
- 1:09:15Speaker 4: in between.
- 1:09:15Speaker 2: Big Joker. That's what she had.
- 1:09:17Speaker 5: It is a big Joker, but also, I just like
- 1:09:19Speaker 5: that Mewtwo's origin story, me, the origin story person.
- 1:09:23Speaker 2: It's just a little different than everybody else's.
- 1:09:26Speaker 5: I like that Mewtwo got to think about stuff sometimes, like,
- 1:09:29Speaker 5: what are these other Pokemon doing?
- 1:09:30Speaker 4: Like, you know, that's how they made Mewtwo's voice.
- 1:09:32Speaker 7: Straight out of the shame barn.
- 1:09:37Speaker 1: He sounds like he's like, you know, like being real
- 1:09:39Speaker 1: secretive about everything. He has an inner voice that's his
- 1:09:45Speaker 1: outer voice.
- 1:09:45Speaker 4: That's exactly right.
- 1:09:50Speaker 2: Which of the colors of the spectrum from the Lantern
- 1:09:53Speaker 2: Corps do you most want to see?
- 1:09:55Speaker 4: Do I want to see? Yes.
- 1:10:00Speaker 5: I want to see red, but I think that purple's funny.
- 1:10:05Speaker 6: I just like the fact that they all banded.
- 1:10:08Speaker 2: I don't like it.
- 1:10:08Speaker 6: We ain't in it.
- 1:10:12Speaker 4: I just want to have compassion and be peaceful. Yeah,
- 1:10:16Speaker 4: I just think that it's like, I don't know. I
- 1:10:18Speaker 4: don't know why I like them. But I would like
- 1:10:20Speaker 4: to see red just because I think of that.
- 1:10:22Speaker 5: One, I just think that yellow's not already been done.
- 1:10:24Speaker 5: But we understand what yellow is and where it's going.
- 1:10:27Speaker 5: And we kind of saw pieces of it even in
- 1:10:28Speaker 5: the Ryan Reynolds-ness of it all. But I just think
- 1:10:32Speaker 5: that red is provocative.
- 1:10:34Speaker 1: I want to see that cat. The cat that's down
- 1:10:37Speaker 1: with the red light. That would do it for me.
- 1:10:40Speaker 1: All right. The one, AT Aliens or Equimini?
- 1:10:45Speaker 4: Okay, so you want my honest answer, it's Equimini. But
- 1:10:49Speaker 4: my honest answer is Equimini.
- 1:10:50Speaker 2: It's offended.
- 1:10:51Speaker 1: No, no, I'm not. For me, it's one of the
- 1:10:56Speaker 1: greatest four album runs of all time. It really is.
- 1:10:58Speaker 1: I take, you know, yeah. On any given day, it
- 1:11:01Speaker 1: doesn't matter.
- 1:11:02Speaker 4: For me, it's Equimini, but I do understand... why it
- 1:11:06Speaker 4: is so hard for folks to pick.
- 1:11:07Speaker 2: It was hard for me.
- 1:11:08Speaker 5: You actually, so just so you guys know, ATLians was
- 1:11:11Speaker 5: not the OG song that we picked for that moment
- 1:11:14Speaker 5: in the episode. We had picked another song, and then
- 1:11:17Speaker 5: me and Justin debated, and that other song comes back
- 1:11:20Speaker 5: later in the season. But we all was like, Vanessa,
- 1:11:23Speaker 5: it has to be ATLians.
- 1:11:24Speaker 4: We went back and forth. I was like, you're right.
- 1:11:26Speaker 2: Is it still OutKast that you initially intended?
- 1:11:29Speaker 6: Yeah, it's still OutKast.
- 1:11:30Speaker 1: Oh, I love it.
- 1:11:31Speaker 6: Okay.
- 1:11:32Speaker 1: Okay, that does lead to my other one. Why? Other
- 1:11:36Speaker 1: than being the greatest band of all time. Why?
- 1:11:39Speaker 2: Why?
- 1:11:39Speaker 4: The greatest band of all time.
- 1:11:44Speaker 5: We don't have to like, you know, like when, when
- 1:11:46Speaker 5: you get into rooms where like people are maybe older
- 1:11:48Speaker 5: and maybe are not hip hop fans or, or just
- 1:11:49Speaker 5: are not black, you'll start, you'll hear so much David Bowie.
- 1:11:52Speaker 4: And then we go back and yeah. And all of that.
- 1:11:54Speaker 1: And it's like, I love Bowie.
- 1:11:56Speaker 4: It's that wouldn't, wouldn't take nothing from Bowie.
- 1:11:58Speaker 5: But, being in this, like, I'm always going to have
- 1:12:03Speaker 5: Andre as my top three, in my top three, always
- 1:12:05Speaker 5: and forever. You're never going to have, he's never not
- 1:12:07Speaker 5: going to be in my top three. And so, I
- 1:12:09Speaker 5: got an opportunity to put my top, one of my
- 1:12:11Speaker 5: top three in there.
- 1:12:13Speaker 4: Okay. I wish it was more, I wish it was.
- 1:12:16Speaker 6: Sometimes that's just the answer. Sometimes it's just milk and cereal.
- 1:12:18Speaker 1: We get it. And you got to put Chunky Fire,
- 1:12:21Speaker 1: you know, so far, like, you know, it's not just
- 1:12:23Speaker 1: AT & T, you also put Chunky Fire, which is like,
- 1:12:25Speaker 1: you know, it was like, come on, fam.
- 1:12:27Speaker 6: Like, No, we get it.
- 1:12:32Speaker 3: In episode four of Lanterns, when John and Hal tunnel
- 1:12:36Speaker 3: into that weapons room, Hal steps on a tile or whatever.
- 1:12:41Speaker 6: What movie is being referenced there? Is it Set It
- 1:12:43Speaker 6: Off or Indiana Jones?
- 1:12:44Speaker 4: Set It Off.
- 1:12:46Speaker 5: And that was a buy by Brie Gibson.
- 1:12:49Speaker 4: And when I.
- 1:12:51Speaker 5: read her script when we had to come in and
- 1:12:52Speaker 5: note it. There was like 17 check marks.
- 1:12:55Speaker 4: I was like, bitch, you don't have to do it.
- 1:12:57Speaker 4: She was like, there's a great movie. And we all
- 1:12:59Speaker 4: sit and talk about it. And yeah, it was great. Wow.
- 1:13:03Speaker 3: We definitely, half of us thought it was Indiana Jones.
- 1:13:05Speaker 3: You know, some typical step on the booby trap.
- 1:13:09Speaker 1: Wow. And then we thought it was even funnier if
- 1:13:12Speaker 1: John was referenced in Set It Off and Hal was
- 1:13:14Speaker 1: referenced in Indiana Jones.
- 1:13:16Speaker 4: It was one of the moments that we were like,
- 1:13:17Speaker 4: to the point.
- 1:13:19Speaker 1: This is Howl's Not That. Yes.
- 1:13:21Speaker 6: Howl's Not That.
- 1:13:23Speaker 1: Yes. Yeah. Yep. Because all them white people I grew
- 1:13:27Speaker 1: up with have watched that at all.
- 1:13:29Speaker 4: That's right.
- 1:13:30Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:13:31Speaker 4: And it is, in fact, a great movie.
- 1:13:33Speaker 1: It is. Fantastic.
- 1:13:35Speaker 2: It's a fantastic soundtrack, actually.
- 1:13:37Speaker 4: One of the best.
- 1:13:39Speaker 5: Yes.
- 1:13:39Speaker 4: That.
- 1:13:40Speaker 1: That era. Waiting to exhale.
- 1:13:42Speaker 6: Waiting to exhale. And he did a baby face on it.
- 1:13:44Speaker 6: New Jersey Drive.
- 1:13:46Speaker 1: Above the Rim.
- 1:13:48Speaker 4: Oh, my God.
- 1:13:49Speaker 1: Like, you know, that era.
- 1:13:50Speaker 4: Don't ever see my Space Jam soundtrack either. Oh, my God.
- 1:13:53Speaker 4: It's crazy.
- 1:13:55Speaker 1: High School High is crazy. Like, they're terrible movies with, like,
- 1:13:59Speaker 1: incredible soundtracks in the air.
- 1:14:01Speaker 4: I don't know what to tell you. Those soundtracks win.
- 1:14:04Speaker 1: Win.
- 1:14:06Speaker 4: Okay.
- 1:14:07Speaker 2: Magneto or Professor X?
- 1:14:09Speaker 1: Magneto.
- 1:14:10Speaker 4: I love it.
- 1:14:11Speaker 1: Easy. Easy. I'm not going.
- 1:14:14Speaker 4: To talk about it. Yeah.
- 1:14:16Speaker 1: Nothing more needs to be said.
- 1:14:17Speaker 4: I don't have nothing against Professor X. That's my G.
- 1:14:21Speaker 5: But Magnino had a damn point of view. And he
- 1:14:23Speaker 5: cried when his friend died. Still went about his business.
- 1:14:27Speaker 5: But he cried when his friend died.
- 1:14:29Speaker 6: Doug.
- 1:14:30Speaker 4: Do you remember in the movies? Do you remember in
- 1:14:32Speaker 4: the movies? Which movie? Which X-Men was it when they
- 1:14:36Speaker 4: had the serum?
- 1:14:38Speaker 1: The Last Stand, I think.
- 1:14:40Speaker 4: Yeah. And Rebecca Romijn became.
- 1:14:41Speaker 6: Yes.
- 1:14:42Speaker 5: And he looks over and he was like, and I mean,
- 1:14:44Speaker 5: it's literally Rebecca Romijn's day. And he's like, and she
- 1:14:48Speaker 5: used to be so beautiful.
- 1:14:50Speaker 6: That was that line.
- 1:14:51Speaker 3: That was cold. I love that. He's a white woman.
- 1:15:03Speaker 5: You guys, I love a complex character.
- 1:15:08Speaker 4: Like I love a character that you're just like, Um.
- 1:15:12Speaker 5: That's why I think Thanos was such a perfect villain
- 1:15:15Speaker 5: because he has a POV.
- 1:15:18Speaker 4: Like, I don't think you should do this, Thanos. I don't,
- 1:15:22Speaker 4: I think there are other ways.
- 1:15:25Speaker 5: You were willing to put your own daughter over the
- 1:15:27Speaker 5: side and cry about it.
- 1:15:29Speaker 4: You really believe in this shit. Could you make some
- 1:15:32Speaker 4: more food?
- 1:15:33Speaker 6: He could have doubled the resources.
- 1:15:34Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:15:36Speaker 1: No, because I want to eliminate half of the universe.
- 1:15:39Speaker 3: I want to turn everybody into dinosaurs as always.
- 1:15:43Speaker 2: It was very much like a genocide was done upon me,
- 1:15:46Speaker 2: so I will do a genocide upon others.
- 1:15:49Speaker 1: I enjoy genocides.
- 1:15:50Speaker 5: He's just like, he's, I feel like you could argue
- 1:15:54Speaker 5: your point with that character. You're not going to change
- 1:15:56Speaker 5: his mind, but he's going to have a rebuttal. And
- 1:15:58Speaker 5: I think those are the perfect characters and the perfect villains.
- 1:16:02Speaker 5: Like they're not just doing it because they want to
- 1:16:04Speaker 5: take over the world.
- 1:16:05Speaker 4: They're doing it because they really believe something. That's why
- 1:16:09Speaker 4: I fuck them. Okay.
- 1:16:12Speaker 3: Uh, this is a, I don't know if you've ever
- 1:16:14Speaker 3: watched wrestling, you're a wrestling fan, but you know, when
- 1:16:16Speaker 3: they walk out and they got a theme song that
- 1:16:18Speaker 3: pops and you know, everybody turns up. If you walk
- 1:16:21Speaker 3: into a room any day and a song starts playing,
- 1:16:24Speaker 3: what song would that be?
- 1:16:26Speaker 4: Don't believe her or not.
- 1:16:28Speaker 1: My son is 10.
- 1:16:28Speaker 4: And that is his walk-up song in baseball.
- 1:16:39Speaker 6: Oh, really?
- 1:16:40Speaker 4: I just make it, we just do the instrumental.
- 1:16:42Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:16:43Speaker 6: The kids are all right. That's all I got to do.
- 1:16:45Speaker 2: I was going to say that about the kid, the
- 1:16:47Speaker 2: actors that got to do the lines and sing the
- 1:16:50Speaker 2: song during the show or whatever. I was like, oh,
- 1:16:53Speaker 2: now they're putting on young actors. Now they know the joy.
- 1:16:56Speaker 4: Now they know the joy.
- 1:16:58Speaker 2: Of outcasts.
- 1:16:59Speaker 4: Yes, they do.
- 1:17:00Speaker 2: From an era. And look at that.
- 1:17:02Speaker 4: We're doing the Lord's work. Mm-hmm.
- 1:17:04Speaker 2: You're keeping the recipes.
- 1:17:05Speaker 1: That's right.
- 1:17:06Speaker 2: And we appreciate you.
- 1:17:07Speaker 1: Yes. All right. What's your favorite superhero movie of all time?
- 1:17:13Speaker 4: Oh, goodness. A movie.
- 1:17:15Speaker 1: A TV show. I mean, other than Lanterns, you know.
- 1:17:17Speaker 4: I was about to say Green Lanterns Episode 3.
- 1:17:20Speaker 1: I mean, it's ours right now.
- 1:17:23Speaker 4: My favorite superhero movie of all time. It's not a movie. Sorry, guys.
- 1:17:28Speaker 2: That's fine.
- 1:17:29Speaker 4: It's the OG X-Men that we used to watch on Fox.
- 1:17:32Speaker 6: Fox Kids, yes.
- 1:17:33Speaker 1: Understandable.
- 1:17:35Speaker 4: It was just... That was the.
- 1:17:38Speaker 5: we woke up and got all of our chores ready
- 1:17:42Speaker 5: so that we wouldn't get in trouble and we could
- 1:17:44Speaker 5: go watch that uninterrupted. Like if we had to go
- 1:17:47Speaker 5: do something that day, me and my uncle, I grew
- 1:17:49Speaker 5: up at my grandma's house and I'm an uncle who's
- 1:17:51Speaker 5: only six years older than me. And we would take
- 1:17:53Speaker 5: the VHS and record it.
- 1:17:58Speaker 4: You know, like, I bet we still have them. I
- 1:18:00Speaker 4: bet because my grandma still has all those VHS's.
- 1:18:03Speaker 5: I bet we still have them. Like that was, that
- 1:18:06Speaker 5: was that for us. That was the not, you could
- 1:18:08Speaker 5: not miss it. We were talking about it. We talked
- 1:18:10Speaker 5: about it incessantly. Like we, that's what sent him to
- 1:18:14Speaker 5: the comic book store. And then as a result, I
- 1:18:16Speaker 5: got his comics when he was done. So that was,
- 1:18:21Speaker 5: it just, it's a seminal part of my childhood.
- 1:18:22Speaker 4: I like, I can tell you my, the first Iron
- 1:18:25Speaker 4: Man was perfect to me.
- 1:18:29Speaker 5: Like, and I, as a writer, probably now I could
- 1:18:32Speaker 5: probably go back and critique it, but I just remember
- 1:18:33Speaker 5: how I felt when I saw it.
- 1:18:35Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:18:36Speaker 4: You know what I mean? Yeah.
- 1:18:37Speaker 5: Endgame, we went, my son was, what year did it
- 1:18:44Speaker 5: come out?
- 1:18:46Speaker 2: 2019?
- 1:18:46Speaker 6: Something like that.
- 1:18:49Speaker 2: It was before COVID.
- 1:18:50Speaker 1: 2019, yes.
- 1:18:51Speaker 5: We wanted to see it at midnight. We bathed him,
- 1:18:56Speaker 5: put him in his pajamas, brought a sleeping bag, got
- 1:19:00Speaker 5: the recliner seats at the theater, put him in between us,
- 1:19:04Speaker 5: let his ass go to bed in.
- 1:19:07Speaker 4: The trailer. So that we could watch it at midnight
- 1:19:09Speaker 4: with everybody else. We didn't have no babysitter.
- 1:19:13Speaker 2: Dedication.
- 1:19:15Speaker 5: The funniest thing was, it was a Toy Story 4
- 1:19:17Speaker 5: that was coming out right after that. One of the
- 1:19:19Speaker 5: Toy Stories was coming out right after that. So right
- 1:19:20Speaker 5: as he's about to fall asleep, he just looks at
- 1:19:22Speaker 5: me and goes, excuse me, mommy, I think I hear Woody.
- 1:19:25Speaker 5: And I said, okay, you can turn around for this
- 1:19:26Speaker 5: one trailer.
- 1:19:27Speaker 4: I love it.
- 1:19:28Speaker 6: I love this. I love this so much.
- 1:19:35Speaker 5: Um but like i remember there are touch points to
- 1:19:37Speaker 5: all of those things that i like remember um that
- 1:19:42Speaker 5: i that i remember like obviously all the batmans i
- 1:19:44Speaker 5: like i recently just showed my kid all of the
- 1:19:47Speaker 5: uh rog batmans and believe it or not his favorite
- 1:19:51Speaker 5: villain is riddler like he just loved him i was
- 1:19:54Speaker 5: like oh i don't know that i would have thought
- 1:19:56Speaker 5: you would have said.
- 1:19:56Speaker 6: That but um the jim carrey riddler yeah the jim.
- 1:19:59Speaker 4: Carrey riddler i was like.
- 1:20:02Speaker 2: Interesting.
- 1:20:03Speaker 4: Interesting. That's not where I thought you were going. Yeah.
- 1:20:09Speaker 5: But I guess the touch point is always just going
- 1:20:12Speaker 5: to be being, you know, seven, eight, nine years old
- 1:20:14Speaker 5: and waking up to go watch.
- 1:20:17Speaker 4: It came on at 11 o'clock.
- 1:20:19Speaker 2: You still remember that?
- 1:20:20Speaker 4: I remember because we had all of our stuff.
- 1:20:23Speaker 5: And we always slept late because it came on Saturday
- 1:20:26Speaker 5: morning and we were always slept late, but we stopped
- 1:20:28Speaker 5: sleeping in late then because we wanted to catch it.
- 1:20:32Speaker 4: Love that.
- 1:20:33Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:20:33Speaker 4: 1986, 2006, 2016, or 2026?
- 1:20:33Speaker 6: What was I doing in 2006?
- 1:20:34Speaker 2: 1986, I was one, so I can't say nothing about that. 2006,
- 1:20:35Speaker 2: I was in college.
- 1:20:36Speaker 6: So, no.
- 1:21:04Speaker 4: I'm trying to figure out how to get.
- 1:21:06Speaker 5: It like some chicken nuggets for cheap.
- 1:21:11Speaker 4: 2016. My son was one. I started Ozark.
- 1:21:15Speaker 5: That's when I was not one. So my son was
- 1:21:19Speaker 5: born in November of 2015. I started Ozark that March.
- 1:21:24Speaker 5: So that was like when my writing career started. We
- 1:21:26Speaker 5: were in the middle of Game of Thrones. Atlanta was
- 1:21:28Speaker 5: coming out. Like I can just like remember all those
- 1:21:31Speaker 5: things and just being like, oh man, TV is exciting.
- 1:21:35Speaker 5: And my life is exciting because I got a cute
- 1:21:37Speaker 5: little baby and a lot of things might work out.
- 1:21:40Speaker 4: It felt like the whole world was opened up to me.
- 1:21:42Speaker 2: So it's funny.
- 1:21:44Speaker 1: All right. If you could have any one superpower, what
- 1:21:47Speaker 1: would it be?
- 1:21:48Speaker 5: Oh my gosh, guys, I've answered this question and I
- 1:21:51Speaker 5: wish that it was more of a moral answer, but
- 1:21:56Speaker 5: I want to be able to like see into the future.
- 1:21:59Speaker 5: Because I want to know who wins the game so
- 1:22:00Speaker 5: I can put better bets. I want lottery numbers. I
- 1:22:03Speaker 5: want to know what flight is going to get delayed
- 1:22:07Speaker 5: so I don't get no ones.
- 1:22:10Speaker 4: I want to know all that. And it's capitalistic. It
- 1:22:13Speaker 4: has nothing to do with anything important.
- 1:22:16Speaker 1: Vanessa.
- 1:22:17Speaker 6: Welcome to the world of villainy. Thank you. Come join me.
- 1:22:22Speaker 1: Please.
- 1:22:23Speaker 6: Is that villainy?
- 1:22:24Speaker 4: How does this bitch know so much?
- 1:22:25Speaker 3: I call it reparations, but I'm just saying people call
- 1:22:28Speaker 3: it different things.
- 1:22:29Speaker 1: Villainy, reparations.
- 1:22:30Speaker 4: I appreciate you.
- 1:22:32Speaker 5: The people at DraftKings would literally shut it down because
- 1:22:35Speaker 5: they'd be like, how did she know that Michigan was
- 1:22:38Speaker 5: going to upset blah, blah, blah?
- 1:22:40Speaker 6: She's like, I'm her. This is what I do.
- 1:22:42Speaker 4: They're not my superpower. I wish it was more of
- 1:22:46Speaker 4: a moral answer. I've tried, but I don't really care
- 1:22:48Speaker 4: about nothing but that.
- 1:22:50Speaker 1: What's the, from Four Brothers when he's on the ice
- 1:22:52Speaker 1: at the end, he's like, I like the way you
- 1:22:54Speaker 1: do business. Like, that's... That's how I feel. I like
- 1:22:58Speaker 1: the way you do business.
- 1:22:59Speaker 6: You can join. Let's join up, man. Let's hit these parlays.
- 1:23:03Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:23:05Speaker 1: Ooh, get back at DraftKings. Boy, I'm running them. Joe
- 1:23:09Speaker 1: Bud and you will pay.
- 1:23:10Speaker 6: DraftKings coming to my house.
- 1:23:12Speaker 4: They're going to see if I know something that they
- 1:23:14Speaker 4: don't know. Because they're like, there's no way they're going
- 1:23:16Speaker 4: to get this far.
- 1:23:16Speaker 2: They be like, inside of training?
- 1:23:17Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:23:17Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:23:19Speaker 1: DraftKings are going to hate me, boy. They're going to
- 1:23:21Speaker 1: hate the day they saw me coming. Oh, my goodness.
- 1:23:27Speaker 1: All right. Well, I think that's it. Vanessa, man, we
- 1:23:31Speaker 1: cannot thank you enough.
- 1:23:34Speaker 4: Thank you so much for having me. This was fun.
- 1:23:37Speaker 1: Oh, man. Please let the internets know where they can
- 1:23:40Speaker 1: find you at. You know, if you want to be found,
- 1:23:42Speaker 1: I know that, you know.
- 1:23:43Speaker 6: Professionally, how about that? Professionally, where can they find you?
- 1:23:49Speaker 5: The only thing I'm really active on is Instagram, and
- 1:23:51Speaker 5: that's V.Kelly, V-B-O-T-K-E-L-L-Y.
- 1:23:54Speaker 1: All right. And, you know, keep it cool. Man, we've
- 1:23:58Speaker 1: had to tell some of our own commenters, you know, lanterns, it's,
- 1:24:00Speaker 1: you know, stirring up emotion. Yeah, man. To say the least.
- 1:24:04Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:24:05Speaker 6: We understand the breakup.
- 1:24:07Speaker 4: We're so lucky for it to be stirring up emotion.
- 1:24:08Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:24:09Speaker 5: Because you can make a TV show and not done
- 1:24:11Speaker 5: them where you give it everything you've got and nobody watches.
- 1:24:15Speaker 4: So we're lucky that it's stirring up emotion.
- 1:24:18Speaker 1: Yeah. And we were discussing this last night. We feel
- 1:24:20Speaker 1: so blessed, you know, to be able to. It's just
- 1:24:24Speaker 1: like when we were doing Watchmen or Lovecraft Country, you know,
- 1:24:26Speaker 1: it's so rare when we get to really talk about
- 1:24:30Speaker 1: a show like this and talk about all the things
- 1:24:32Speaker 1: surrounding it, you know. And so we're so blessed that
- 1:24:36Speaker 1: you created this and, you know, put this out into
- 1:24:38Speaker 1: the world. And we're so thankful for it because it's.
- 1:24:40Speaker 1: driven all these conversations. We're getting all this different feedback
- 1:24:44Speaker 1: from people. People are learning, they're waking up, they're understanding better. And,
- 1:24:48Speaker 1: you know, it's a beautiful thing.
- 1:24:50Speaker 4: I thank you guys. Thank you so much. Just keep watching.
- 1:24:53Speaker 4: Anything you have a question about, I promise.
- 1:24:56Speaker 2: Keep watching.
- 1:25:00Speaker 1: I know you said no more press, but if possible,
- 1:25:01Speaker 1: when it's all over, we might have to see if
- 1:25:03Speaker 1: you can come back around one more time.
- 1:25:05Speaker 6: Just so you can say, I told you so.
- 1:25:08Speaker 1: Yes.
- 1:25:08Speaker 5: Walk by the frame and be like, told y'all.
- 1:25:12Speaker 2: I told y'all. Love it.
- 1:25:17Speaker 1: All right, everyone. Thank you for tuning in. We will
- 1:25:20Speaker 1: be back with more on the For All Nerds show.
