- 0:00You're listening to Beyond the Sermon, the podcast of First
- 0:03Methodist Church in Collingswood, NJ.
- 0:05On our podcast, the goal is not just to share the sermons we've
- 0:08preached, but to go beyond the sermon and talk about what we're
- 0:11learning and what God is doing in US and in our community.
- 0:15Well, welcome back from our holiday break on the podcast.
- 0:21We have a special treat today. You don't have to just listen to
- 0:25Jeremy and me. We've got Ali Tribulus and Damir
- 0:31Green here with us who both had the opportunity to attend the
- 0:35passion trip with Jeremy and the young adult ministry.
- 0:40And I'm get to hear some of their experiences from that
- 0:44trip. And so let's start off outside
- 0:48of Passion. What are you guys involved in
- 0:52right now? What are you doing?
- 0:54Just to kind of help people know you a little bit more?
- 0:57I'm currently working, going to college, pretty much all.
- 1:02What are you studying in college?
- 1:04I'm studying in biology since Canley County don't have a
- 1:07marine biologist. OK.
- 1:08Allergy program. So yeah.
- 1:09Good. I'm Ali and I'm a freshman at
- 1:12Saint Joseph's University and I'm studying neuroscience
- 1:16currently. Learn.
- 1:18Currently. Yes.
- 1:20Is that up for debate? No, no, no.
- 1:21OK. I actually love it so.
- 1:23Jeremy, what do? You do.
- 1:25That's a great question. I will let you all determine
- 1:28that for yourselves. So, so you guys are both
- 1:31freshmen, right? You graduated last year.
- 1:35This is your first experience go into passion, right?
- 1:38Yes. What were your initial
- 1:40impressions when you first walked into the stadium?
- 1:47It was a little overwhelming because I wasn't sure what to
- 1:49expect, but overall, like it was like a great experience and you
- 1:54could really like feel like when he walked in, like I don't
- 1:58really, you could just feel it. It's the holy space.
- 2:01Yeah. Same with me.
- 2:03So like as soon I got there, I'm like, wow, this is like a holy
- 2:06different big lot of surrounded by a lot of Christian people and
- 2:10believe in people. So like as soon I walked in, I'm
- 2:11like wow, I was like a like a like a Holy Spirit just hit me.
- 2:15So yeah. And for people listen, they
- 2:19might not know passions not just held in like a big church or
- 2:22whatever. Where?
- 2:23Where was it this year? The Global Life Stadium in
- 2:27Dallas, TX. Yeah, so that's where the
- 2:29Cowboys play, right? No, it's the.
- 2:31Rangers The Rangers play. Texas Rangers.
- 2:34Yeah, yeah, yeah. So I've been in that stadium.
- 2:36It's it's pretty big that my boys will always remember that
- 2:40stadium as the one where there were fireworks inside the Dome.
- 2:45We did not get that. You didn't get fireworks.
- 2:48Nobody hit a home run, I'm sure. So, So what were some of?
- 2:51Your expectations going into the trip, like I'm sure Jeremy had
- 2:56told you a bit about it, that's why you went.
- 2:59But I just said go, yeah. And they trust me.
- 3:03Basically, yeah, I wasn't really sure what to expect because I
- 3:10didn't really know anything about it.
- 3:11Like I've heard other people like that went, but like I
- 3:14didn't really do my own research so I really had no expectations,
- 3:18but it was wonderful nonetheless.
- 3:21On that case, thank you for trusting me.
- 3:25On our way there, I was like kind of nervous because I've
- 3:28never like been in there like a big like stadium and I never
- 3:31went to bash before. So I was like, what am I
- 3:33expecting basically and all that.
- 3:36And like it just helped me like basically like just get out and
- 3:40actually like leave like the daily life behind and like focus
- 3:43on like this to actually take a breath.
- 3:46So it was kind of great experience for.
- 3:50Me Jeremy, this is not your first time, so how did this
- 3:56experience of passion line up with other ones?
- 4:00It was the worst one. The worst?
- 4:01One, yeah. Not because of passion, but
- 4:03because of the company. No, no, no, no.
- 4:10It was. I mean, this is the first time
- 4:12I've done I, I honestly lost count.
- 4:15I honestly like 8 passions and I've only been to one that
- 4:18wasn't in Atlanta and it was in DC.
- 4:20So the first time had to fly to passion always driven.
- 4:25So that was dynamic shift and good and bad and in various
- 4:29ways. And then we had almost a new
- 4:32crew, a bunch of people that have been with us before
- 4:34couldn't go. We had a bunch of high school
- 4:36seniors last year that are now able to go this year.
- 4:40And also it's been a while since we've gone on the trip, even
- 4:44though passion didn't start till New Year's, but also to be
- 4:47together and start the trip on New Year's Eve.
- 4:49So that's what I think. It's just, I mean, even though
- 4:51it's like a newer group kind of testing the waters and getting
- 4:55to know each other, it was still a good New Year's Eve
- 4:59celebration and bonding before even the whole conference
- 5:02started, which was nice. And so, yeah, I, I think this
- 5:06year was unique, even going into my expectations is this is one
- 5:10of the best lineup of speakers I've seen.
- 5:15And it's not that like they are what make passion, because Jesus
- 5:19is what makes passion, but God has spoken to me through their
- 5:23messages more consistently than other speakers.
- 5:27And so then I get more excited and anticipating the various
- 5:31people. I was like, if they took out two
- 5:34and switched them out with Levi and Francis Chan, I would have
- 5:38been happy. But then Levi was already there.
- 5:41Priscilla Shire was there even though she wasn't on the ticket.
- 5:44And then the two that I wasn't as excited about, and they're
- 5:47great. I like them.
- 5:48They're just not as consistent. We're a part of a discussion
- 5:51panel and that discussion panel was incredible.
- 5:54And so God just really used every single piece and person
- 5:57and see how he connected each talk in section to really just,
- 6:01I think like cohesively work together to not only encourage
- 6:06but also inspire and give next steps for what's after passion,
- 6:11which is really great. Yeah, that's great.
- 6:14So for people who who haven't been before, is it just a
- 6:17conference where people speak and you just sit there and
- 6:20listen and take notes the whole time?
- 6:22No, there's it's like half worship songs and like half
- 6:27speaking, I would say. So it's not boring at all.
- 6:29Like it was engaging the whole time.
- 6:31I mean, we were there for like so long on Saturday, Friday.
- 6:36Yeah, we were there like the whole day.
- 6:38We went back to the house to eat dinner.
- 6:40But. But besides that, like, it was
- 6:42not boring at all. Like, it's not like I wanted to
- 6:45leave, like I wanted to stay. And yeah, it was just really
- 6:48engaging. I took lots of great notes and
- 6:52discovered lots of new music. Which I think is really
- 6:56incredible because I think the the reiteration of the it's not
- 7:01boring is good because that was my experience with Passion where
- 7:06like I grew up if the service went more than like an hour and
- 7:1010 minutes, we're like, can we wrap this up, please?
- 7:13Like we're not going and this isn't going anywhere.
- 7:15Yeah, yeah, yeah. I mean, I, I keep pointing my
- 7:18watch at you, Scott, and you keep going longer.
- 7:20And then I went to Passion. I was like, oh, I can sit
- 7:23through like a three hour church service.
- 7:25I didn't think that'd be possible.
- 7:27But like between the worship, between the preaching and then
- 7:31they switch it up with like the discussion panel and other
- 7:33things like it just keeps you engaged and the topics are
- 7:36really just touching on the hearts of this generation.
- 7:39And so they it's not boring, but it's impressively not boring.
- 7:42Yeah, it's not, It's not boring at all.
- 7:44It was actually kind of fun. It was fun because normally I
- 7:48can't just sit like anywhere for like over like 3 hours or more
- 7:54because then I'll just need to get up a walk around and stuff.
- 7:57But they're like the songs was great.
- 7:59My favorite song was probably the I think it was The Blood I
- 8:01think. Yeah, the.
- 8:02Blood so good it was one of my favorites as soon as as soon as
- 8:06I got on the plane I just had that music is played in my head
- 8:10soon I got home around like 9 something just playing on TV
- 8:14until like 12 nice love that song.
- 8:16So it was a great experience. I felt that like, as you know,
- 8:19you could see God present anywhere, but they're like, I
- 8:22actually felt it, like, felt it deeply and also did not want to
- 8:26leave. I love the weather there.
- 8:29Yeah, we hit like 73 the one day and sunny and everyone was
- 8:33dressed for winter clothes because no one trusts me.
- 8:35Yeah. Yeah.
- 8:39Yeah, there are reasons for that.
- 8:42Now I know, I know that stadium for a baseball game can hold
- 8:47like 3840 thousand. Oh, we, we had 45,045 thousand.
- 8:53Yeah. And primarily young people right
- 8:59under 25. Oh yeah, 18 to 25.
- 9:01And they said they, I don't think they ever, maybe I, I
- 9:04missed an announcement and went to the bathroom or something,
- 9:07but they were talking about that.
- 9:08It was potentially the most heavily attended event at Global
- 9:13Life Field ever. Yeah, they said like this was
- 9:16the the most people they ever had, like at the Global Esteem.
- 9:19Because I think they also counted the door holders, which
- 9:22are like the volunteers that come from all over to help
- 9:26demerge and help us get organized.
- 9:27And in there I think they had like 1000 volunteers.
- 9:30So that's in addition to the seats.
- 9:32I think, wait, I don't know if it was Japan or somebody,
- 9:36something, some, some people came from all the way from
- 9:38Japan. Yeah, I think every state, over
- 9:4350 countries and over 1700 colleges represented.
- 9:47Wow. Yeah.
- 9:48So what was that like for you guys to be with that many of
- 9:53your peers? Because I mean, we've got a
- 9:56good, good group of people here, got a good youth group, good,
- 10:01you know, growing young adults group.
- 10:03But what was it like to be worshipping with 45,000 other
- 10:08people, all mostly your age? I'll say worshiping with that
- 10:14many people, I was not really like, scared about it.
- 10:18I was just more like interested in like knowing new people
- 10:21basically, and actually listening to the worship songs
- 10:23so I can make those better connections, yeah.
- 10:26I would just say it felt like a safe place and I don't know,
- 10:31it's just really cool to see that there's so many people.
- 10:34Like that's not even like there's so many other people,
- 10:37but like just like seeing everyone in that stadium, it
- 10:40just like helped me see like, wow, they all love God too.
- 10:44Like I'm not alone. And when we're doing the
- 10:47flashlight thing, basically they put like, I don't know how to
- 10:51explain. They're just saying like, oh,
- 10:52raise your flashlight if you've been through this or this and so
- 10:57many other people raise their flashlights to the same things I
- 11:01was raising my flashlight for. It just like made me feel less
- 11:04alone and it was really comforting.
- 11:07So. So what would you say were some
- 11:08of your highlights? I really liked Cliff is his
- 11:12name. I liked that when Louis was
- 11:17asking him questions, like one of the questions was like how do
- 11:21you know God's real And just like stuff like that.
- 11:23Like he would just ask him questions and Cliff would just
- 11:25like respond and he's very intelligent and it just really
- 11:28helped me like understand things better.
- 11:31And of course I love the music. I like the song Goodbye
- 11:33Yesterday. That was my favorite one.
- 11:35I'd say those are my 2 highlights.
- 11:37I say one of the speakers I really enjoy.
- 11:39Well, I enjoy most of them, but what was her name?
- 11:42Jackie Hill Perry. Jackie Hill Perry, she was a
- 11:45great speaker, but what Ashley touched me probably was the last
- 11:49speaker of the thing because what she was saying, I was going
- 11:52basically doing that, like through all that stuff.
- 11:54Yeah. Christine Kane, yeah, was the
- 11:56last one. Jackie Hill Perry did a great
- 11:59message that like semi centered around Jack and Rose from the
- 12:03Titanic and such a good job. It was great, I loved it.
- 12:08So what do you hear God say unto you during your time?
- 12:12What I heard basically him saying like that, I'm not alone,
- 12:15like it's other people probably in the stadium.
- 12:17That's like dealing with the same stuff that you're dealing
- 12:19with and stuff. What I got from this was that
- 12:23God was telling me that I have to make some changes in my life
- 12:26just in order to, like, reach my fullest potential that God has
- 12:30for me. So yeah, I've already started
- 12:32working on some of those. I can agree with that.
- 12:35I should have pulled that one up.
- 12:37Yeah, that had to change some things in my life.
- 12:40I could agree with that. And there there's a few things
- 12:42that he spoke for me, but I felt like he just provided a lot of
- 12:49things to me to give to others immediately in that time or like
- 12:56for lessons or sermons coming up that he just.
- 12:59Yeah, I don't know. So I got questions.
- 13:01What changed from the beginning of us arriving in Dallas to the
- 13:04end? For me, I'll say what changed
- 13:06was me is like when I was going there, I had like so much like
- 13:10stuff build up and like as I was there, it all like mottled down.
- 13:15So like at the last bit, when I went home, I felt like a whole
- 13:18totally different person. I would say when I got there I
- 13:22was very anxious and I feel like I had like a part of my heart
- 13:25closed off. Like feel like I wasn't really
- 13:28open so much, but I feel like after going to the conference,
- 13:33like I said, like I, I guess I opened up and I realized what I
- 13:36had to change and it just like, I guess like shifted my mindset
- 13:41a little bit and made me want to change things in my life in
- 13:46order to get better, I would say.
- 13:50Was there something specific that led to those changes?
- 13:55I would say just like all the speakers in general and just the
- 13:59way that all of their messages like correlated with each other
- 14:02and I just feel like I was kind of being called out like about
- 14:07like fear and anxiety mostly. I feel like that was the big
- 14:11thing that they touched on. And I feel like I, I realized
- 14:15that I've been going to other places and things to like try
- 14:21and like make myself feel better, but I haven't really
- 14:23truly gone to God with these things.
- 14:26And just like some of the messages, like they're talking
- 14:29about that. And it made me realize that I
- 14:33really should put God 1st instead of going to other things
- 14:36like my friends and just like stuff like that.
- 14:40And instead of like shutting myself away and like isolating
- 14:44myself, I should like what Sadie Robinson was saying.
- 14:47She was saying like about her anxiety.
- 14:50She was saying how she had really good friends to help her
- 14:54through it and she would like talk with them, her like godly
- 14:58friends. And I feel like I also don't
- 15:00have many of those. So she's talking about her
- 15:03friends. So that's one thing I realize I
- 15:05need to like find more godly friends, I guess.
- 15:08And one thing that happened after Passion, I did invite my
- 15:11best friend to church. So I'm hoping she comes this
- 15:13Sunday. But I think she will because we
- 15:15are talking about it a lot and I was just telling her my
- 15:18experience is a passion. But yeah, I realized that I need
- 15:22to go to God 1st instead of turning to other things.
- 15:26She. Just took all the word, all the
- 15:28stuff I was thinking about. But but yeah, like as she said
- 15:32that that like all the speakers, I felt like they was like
- 15:35basically calling me out and like half the speakers, I felt
- 15:37like it was directly coming to me because I don't go to God for
- 15:42it. Like I hold I hold it like in
- 15:43like hostage basically and hold it deep in the like deep down
- 15:47and like it's like a pressure is I need to talk about to
- 15:53somebody. I need to give this to God at
- 15:54the end of passion, as I said, I went to Jeremy, I told him what
- 15:57was going on. He prayed for me and after that
- 16:00it felt like easier to like actually try to go speak to
- 16:03someone. Thank you for that, Jeremy.
- 16:07And that was one of those things that like walking with and being
- 16:11with you guys for 3-4 years. How long have I been here?
- 16:18My son was born when I got here. So 3 1/2 years.
- 16:22I don't think that they would have had that opportunity to
- 16:26share at the end of the trip if someone didn't know him.
- 16:31And like, 'cause I, I checked on you and like 3 or 4 times like
- 16:35they are you OK? Like everything good.
- 16:36Like he was just semen off and I and I didn't know what, but I
- 16:40also want to give him a space to just chew on whatever God was
- 16:43doing. And then he was bold enough to
- 16:44share with me at the airport what was going on and able to
- 16:47pray for him. But like, if not, if it was just
- 16:49like a new kid, I didn't know that it was like, I don't want
- 16:51to like maybe that's just his normal thing or just tired, like
- 16:54not going to press on that. And then with Ali just trying to
- 16:59help support her leading up to getting to the actual passion
- 17:03event, I don't think she would have entrusted a stranger or
- 17:08allowed them into that space to navigate that time, which again,
- 17:15I don't take for granted the trust that they've put into me.
- 17:20And trying to, I mean, Mexico definitely helped with that.
- 17:24And I read at some point of passion, I remember you're
- 17:28trying to do and I was like, Ali's going to get hurt or
- 17:30whatever. And I was like, Rebecca can save
- 17:32your life only so many times, something like that.
- 17:37But it's just like a blessing of, of walking together like as
- 17:42a family, navigating the things outside of this specific event
- 17:46and like things that you pay to go be a part of and seeing how
- 17:49God uses all of that as a part of the entire experience to draw
- 17:54them closer to him and hopefully to other believers to continue
- 17:59to encourage and hold accountable and all that kind of
- 18:02stuff. And so, yeah, I'm just blessed
- 18:05of of just how God's been working and all of that.
- 18:09What would you share with someone who was thinking about
- 18:13going to Passion next year? But but I was.
- 18:18Jeremy's just, you know, go. I'm.
- 18:21Just go tumbling up. But no, I'll I'll share like the
- 18:25stuff that I experienced. Tell them that they something
- 18:28like during they should go. Well, you can probably catch
- 18:30that experience as well because you're surrounded by so many
- 18:32believers and like you might be out of life.
- 18:34Like thinking like, is this like a step that I want to take?
- 18:38Basically, yeah, you should go because it's like a good
- 18:41opportunity and also like a good place where like you can see
- 18:46other people that's probably going through the same things
- 18:47you're going through. I would just say to do it and to
- 18:50take the risk. I, I think it was Louis who said
- 18:53it in his like talk. If you're feeling lost, like
- 18:57passion's not gonna, like it's not just going to heal you
- 19:00miraculously, but it can be like a first step in order to start
- 19:07that healing process. And I think that it has been
- 19:13that for me so far. So I would just say to go take
- 19:16the risk. You never know what's going to
- 19:18happen if you don't like it, you never have to go again, but you
- 19:21might as well try. And I truly enjoyed it and I
- 19:25would like to go again so. Yeah, same here.
- 19:29I would love to go again. And I've never had someone
- 19:32regret going to passion before. I've had someone regret going to
- 19:36passion with me. I can't blame them because we
- 19:40did not get along. This was a long, long time.
- 19:42I think it was the first time I took a group of passion.
- 19:45There was 1 and I just like I was not having it anyway but
- 19:51luckily can I say that publicly? Can I?
- 20:01Can OK follow up if if passion is a first step or a step in the
- 20:09process, what do you feel like I'd say or is maybe a next step?
- 20:15I think for me, I just, I need to go to God first.
- 20:19Like I need to pray a lot more. I feel like that's something
- 20:22I've been lacking and reading my Bible regularly.
- 20:25That's another thing. I just feel like I have not been
- 20:27doing that throughout my first semester of college.
- 20:29I mean, I've been like involved in campus ministry and stuff,
- 20:32but I haven't, I've been like lukewarm I would say like I
- 20:34haven't actually like gone deeper and fully devoted my
- 20:39life. And there's like some things I
- 20:40need to cut out, and I guess probably some people I should
- 20:45cut out to, but yeah, I guess. Don't worry.
- 20:52I guess those are just some of the next steps.
- 20:54I just, I just really need to like grow closer is what I'm
- 20:59being called to do. And in order to do that, I just
- 21:02need to do some life changes. And yeah, I think that's what
- 21:07I'm being told. What I say I'll have by like say
- 21:10I need to read the Bible more and also like pray more because
- 21:13I haven't been doing that God basically like show me like the
- 21:17inside person like he re renewed me basically.
- 21:21So now I'm seeing like expectations on like what he
- 21:27wants me to do and how he wants me to do it and what steps you
- 21:30want me to take. I'm seeing that right now and.
- 21:32That was something I forgot who touched on it, but they were
- 21:35talking about like almost like having a spiritual role model
- 21:39from like a church history or something.
- 21:42And essentially we always focus of when I'm there instead of the
- 21:48what am I supposed to be doing here?
- 21:50And how did they get there is because of all the important
- 21:54things they did to draw closer to God and the here and now.
- 21:57And I think that was really encouraging, inspiring, because
- 22:00sometimes, a lot of times we're like, well, when I'm 20 years
- 22:04down the road in this stage of life, that's when it'll all
- 22:06click. But it's what are we doing now
- 22:09to get us in in that direction? And so, yeah, having that
- 22:14perspective is very helpful thing for everyone.
- 22:17Anything you were hoping I would ask you about that I haven't
- 22:21asked you about? You're just dying to share with
- 22:24the listeners. Best barbecue UAE or?
- 22:27I don't like the Texas BBQ. Why?
- 22:30It did her dirty. It did her dirty.
- 22:32It was delicious. Don't tell me it wasn't
- 22:34delicious. It was.
- 22:35Good. The brisket was OK.
- 22:37You had the brisket tip. Yeah, I thought I like the
- 22:40sandwich. Oh, the.
- 22:42Brisket was good. I had my first Texas Twinkie and
- 22:44it was so good. It's I think it's a jalapeno
- 22:49pepper, some sort of pepper stuffed with cheese and some
- 22:53sort of maybe the brisket, maybe pulled pork inside that and then
- 22:56wrapped in bacon and fried. So good.
- 23:00They serve a hot dog like that, that global life.
- 23:05Also, I couldn't afford everything that was that global,
- 23:08global life. Yeah, it was.
- 23:09A hot dog inside, a pepper with cheese and then wrapped in bacon
- 23:13and. Yeah, it was the way to go.
- 23:16And I I felt bad for apparently it was a lot of people's first
- 23:22real BBQ experience and they weren't anticipating the size of
- 23:26their meals. Like the big?
- 23:29Yeah, like the big Papa. Everything's bigger in Texas.
- 23:32So Murph and Gracie got the Big Papa, which is a stuffed potato,
- 23:37and they were thinking like the potato you buy at the grocery
- 23:40store. Yeah, it was probably like a 10
- 23:43to 12 inch long and like 6 inch wide potato piled up about like
- 23:496 inches potato itself. Probably weighed a pound.
- 23:53It was it was definitely lived up to the name Big Papa.
- 23:56So they could have easily split that, but they tried their best
- 24:00and shared and all that kind of stuff.
- 24:03That was good. We also got in and out, which
- 24:04was good I. Like in and.
- 24:06Out, a lot of people's first in and out and having wore the hat
- 24:10and that was great. He has the little kids hat that
- 24:13you can wear. It was a good time.
- 24:15Well, that's our conversation for today, but that doesn't mean
