- 0:06looking to gain more clients, create more impact and more
- 0:09revenue in your business, TuneIn to amplify your marketing
- 0:13message with Christine Campbell Rappin.
- 0:15Every week we're going to take you through how to build an
- 0:17audience of buyers, mastering your marketing message and
- 0:20making offers. One of the most important and
- 0:26frustrating realities of business is that you have to
- 0:30manage 6 inches, the hardest 6 inches of business, the one
- 0:36between your two ears. Because being decided about your
- 0:41future is going to challenge you in ways that you cannot possibly
- 0:46imagine. And how you stay on track comes
- 0:51down to the voices in your head and their voices in your heart.
- 0:56And on this episode of Amplifier Marketing message, I want to
- 0:58talk about the pep talk and the dialogue that happens in my own
- 1:02brain. So yeah, my friends are going to
- 1:05invite you to step inside my world and how I lead myself five
- 1:09years into my business and take the lessons for you so that you
- 1:14can make it not just today, but to the future you're creating.
- 1:20I'm your host Christine Campbell wrapping if we've not had the
- 1:22pleasure of meeting. I'm a business mentor.
- 1:24I helped the emerging entrepreneurs shift from being
- 1:27the operator in their business, doing all the things, to being
- 1:30an effective CEO that leads, loves their business and creates
- 1:36a legacy for other people. When I first started my business
- 1:40journey, I committed very early on when I had just one client to
- 1:46hiring mentors and mentors in my life have been so critical and
- 1:51they're a table stakes idea for my business.
- 1:55I will always work with at least one mentoring.
- 1:58Currently, right now I have to two that I pay for that I spend
- 2:0550 to $70,000 a year on and they are there to help me manage the
- 2:12six inches in my brain because what I have in my business
- 2:15skills, not surprising because it's what I teach is the brass
- 2:19tax a business 101. I understand how marketing
- 2:23functions. I understand how sales is
- 2:25effective and I know the importance of systems and
- 2:28repeatability in the operation side.
- 2:30My skill set, what makes me awesome, the reason people hire
- 2:33and spend money with our services is because I know how
- 2:37to connect the dots and create what I call an engine of
- 2:40success. I help people know what to do,
- 2:43when to do it, why to do it and how to do it.
- 2:47And when I need to lead myself. It isn't A1 time thing.
- 2:57It happens minute by minute, hour by hour, year by year.
- 3:01And recently, I was leading a retreat I run every year with a
- 3:06collaborative partner of mine, A Woman's Prosperity Retreat
- 3:09Combined. Details about our retreats on
- 3:11christinecampbellrappin.com. This is to help women become
- 3:16unapologetic about going after what they want in life and
- 3:19business. And the reason I love supporting
- 3:24this way is because it's exactly what I need.
- 3:27It's exactly what I see my clients meeting and it is an
- 3:31opportunity to be peer-to-peer in a way that you so rarely have
- 3:37opportunities to be. Mentorship has been key to the
- 3:42journey and I was at a time and place in my business where we
- 3:47have seen our business double every year that we've been in
- 3:51and after year after year after year has happened.
- 3:54Of course those numbers have been exponential.
- 3:56And I was chatting with this to one of my coaches recently and
- 4:00he said to me, you know, it's interesting to hear you say
- 4:02this, but I don't think you see the significance.
- 4:05You make more now in a month you made in your entire first year.
- 4:10I said, yeah, it's true, he said.
- 4:12And that's a pattern for you. It's a pattern of what you teach
- 4:16your clients. I said yes.
- 4:18He said, why is that possible? And I said, well, it's because
- 4:21of the voices in my head from the mentors I've hired.
- 4:25Two years ago, I was on a precipice with my business.
- 4:28It wasn't fast growth, but I was at a capacity constraint and I
- 4:33had to make a decision. More importantly, I needed to
- 4:37execute it Where I was going to fire my biggest client.
- 4:40You must be thinking, what the heck?
- 4:43There were so many reasons I wanted to fire my biggest
- 4:49client, and yet I lingered on that decision way longer than I
- 4:55needed to. I needed capacity, and capacity
- 4:59could be solved by firing my biggest client.
- 5:02I needed the time, space, bandwidth that would be created
- 5:05by that vacuum to be able to course correct my business,
- 5:08change my offer, and bring more alignment into the people I was
- 5:12serving. Was it scary?
- 5:14Yes. Did they delay the decision?
- 5:18Yes. Do I regret the decision?
- 5:23No, I also know I should have made it far earlier, but I hired
- 5:29somebody in my life because what they were doing in theirs called
- 5:34to me. It was this they were clear and
- 5:40they lived their life by this outage.
- 5:43Do the thing that scares you most right now.
- 5:47And to me, the biggest thing that scared me the most was
- 5:51firing my biggest client because I was going to create a vacuum
- 5:54of revenue that was more than six figures in size.
- 5:58I was worried in the short term, could I replace the income?
- 6:02I didn't doubt long term because I had the skills I knew to
- 6:05create client growth, but I knew I would have a short term
- 6:09potential shortfall. But I also knew it was up to me
- 6:12to solve that shortfall and nobody else would do the work
- 6:14for me. So I was needing to RIP the
- 6:17Band-Aid off, make the leap and get to work.
- 6:20So I hired this mentor because they were saying and living
- 6:23this. I did this because it was hard.
- 6:26I did this because it was the thing that scared me the most.
- 6:29And it did this to intentionally push myself to grow.
- 6:32And so the first thing that I always say to myself is you can
- 6:36do hard things. What's the thing that scares you
- 6:39most? Do it now.
- 6:42And that has been in the past 12 months, applied in everything
- 6:47from wild roller coasters that go at 100 miles an hour,
- 6:51literally actual roller coasters in Disney, to firing my biggest
- 6:56client, to the biggest investments I've made on stages
- 7:00and getting in rooms and sitting peer-to-peer where some of the
- 7:04biggest names in the industry, like a collaboration with Les
- 7:08Brown. I remind myself I can do hard
- 7:13things and to do the thing that scares me.
- 7:17And so I recently was running this women's retreat, as I said,
- 7:22and I knew that my next level growth was going to require me
- 7:27to take even bigger risks than it was going to me, to push even
- 7:31higher against the wall of what I thought my own limits were.
- 7:37And recently, in the last couple of months, I had heard something
- 7:41from Jesse Itzler, who talked about his time when David
- 7:44Goggins had lived with him and said, you know, your brain will
- 7:48quit before your body does. Your brain will say it's enough
- 7:54stop but you're not actually at fatigue yet and the stats are
- 7:58shocking. It's like your brain quits 40%
- 8:00ahead of the game, and that's why this mentality of you can do
- 8:04hard things and do the thing that fears you're afraid of is
- 8:08so important in this mindset game.
- 8:12I was running this retreat with my collaborative partner
- 8:15Carolyn, and we made a commitment to each other to run
- 8:19it. Were there lots of things that
- 8:21were off track, not performing, needed some course correction
- 8:25along the way? 100%.
- 8:27And it even got to the point where we had to have a come to
- 8:31Jesus moment and we're like, do we continue with this?
- 8:35Is it a priority? And we sat a call in our Diaries
- 8:42and I knew I was walking into that room with a go, no go
- 8:45decision. And I thought I can't get to
- 8:49great. If I don't start, I can't learn
- 8:53the lessons if I never get off the starting block.
- 8:57And so we got into this meeting and she said, you know, here's
- 8:59our options. We can, you know, write the loss
- 9:04off. We can make a decision to defer
- 9:08it. I can try to negotiate to reduce
- 9:13some exposure we had financially and she'd come prepared with all
- 9:17the exit plans, she said. Here are all the exit plans.
- 9:20What do you want to do? One of us had to say it out loud
- 9:23and I thought to myself, I can do hard things.
- 9:27I will hold the line and I have that mentality of hold the line
- 9:32because of who I choose to be mentored by.
- 9:34I watch my mentors play holding the line.
- 9:38I watch them both, yes, win, but win 20% of the time and 80% of
- 9:43the time fail and watch them learn from their 80% failures.
- 9:48And so I said to my collaborative partner, we're
- 9:51going to hold the line. I'm prepared to to cover the
- 9:55financial risks. I'm prepared to get my ask on
- 10:00and get moving with my invitations.
- 10:03And I'm really prepared to do the work to have this lived
- 10:06experience so we can get even stronger for next year.
- 10:10And her reaction was as beautiful as I expected it to
- 10:13be. She's like, I'm all into you,
- 10:17got to be surrounded by people like this in your business.
- 10:21So as we launched our retreat, day one was all about fire.
- 10:25What do you want? Where does passion lie for you?
- 10:28What do you need to burn to the ground?
- 10:30What do you need to use as fuel? And we played with this idea of
- 10:34fire and that catapulted us into water flow, course correction,
- 10:47persistence and eventually to expansion and error.
- 10:51But as we I woke on Day 2, I needed to be challenged,
- 10:58confront myself and so I made the decision when I went to bed
- 11:04to set an alarm, to get out of bed and to go walk around a lake
- 11:09in the dark. Pitch dark.
- 11:14But one of the things Carolyn and I had talked in our planning
- 11:16bag was bring a flashlight. I think there's going to be some
- 11:18analogies that will use, because their analogies are used with my
- 11:22clients about being the light, turning on the light.
- 11:25And so bring a flashlight. She had brought a flashlight.
- 11:28It was in the room. I went to grab it and it was
- 11:31almost out of battery. And I mean, barely lighting the
- 11:35way. And when I first got out of bed,
- 11:37let me back up for a second. First thing I got out of bed.
- 11:39I got up literally out of bed and thought, this is insane.
- 11:43It's pitch dark. I don't really even know where
- 11:45the lake is other than it's behind this property we were
- 11:48staying at for the retreat centre and knew that the thing
- 11:51was about 7 kilometers, 5 miles give or take and thought the
- 11:56distance isn't a problem. This is crazy.
- 12:00And I literally turned around, went back to bed and then I laid
- 12:03there and thought, Oh my God, Christine, you can do hard
- 12:05things. Do the thing that scares you.
- 12:08I got out of bed, put my stuff on, went down, found the
- 12:10flashlight in the dark and then went out and thought, I'm just
- 12:13going to walk towards what I think is the end of the property
- 12:16because somebody told me there was a door, a path steps down to
- 12:21this pathway. So I was convinced in my brain
- 12:26that I was doing something insane.
- 12:29And I started to walk and I walked maybe 50 meters and
- 12:33thought, this is crazy. I can't see anything on this
- 12:35battery is almost out. I should turn back.
- 12:40And I could hear myself say myself, Christine, you can do
- 12:43hard things. You learn nothing by turning
- 12:46back other than you're not willing to push your limits.
- 12:51Do the thing that scares you most.
- 12:53And so I kept going. And as I was walking with this
- 12:58flashlight, I also had this moment that occurred to me.
- 13:01When did the dark become so scary?
- 13:04And while I've taken lots of stages and I always think about
- 13:07the energy of what I bring with my heart to the audience, it's
- 13:11been a long time since I've thought about stages with big
- 13:13lights. Where when you are on the stage
- 13:16and you are the one holding the light, where the light is upon,
- 13:19you're in an incredibly vulnerable place.
- 13:21Because now I've realized everybody can see me walking on
- 13:24the path, but I can't even see the path.
- 13:27And I thought, this is a lesson. Am I prepared to be standing in
- 13:33the light where I cannot see the haters?
- 13:35Because that next level of growth has haters in it.
- 13:38I know because they're already showing up.
- 13:41I also know that I had to make a decision to keep the light on
- 13:48and as I kept walking and saying I could hardly see the path,
- 13:52everybody could see me. I'm in an incredibly vulnerable
- 13:55position. Do I have something I want to
- 13:57take up space around? And I kept going.
- 14:01And as I started to walk down this path, I was thinking it's
- 14:05time to exit. Maybe I'll find, maybe I'll just
- 14:07keep going instead of I knew the path was around me around the
- 14:09left, but if I just maybe instead of going around the
- 14:12left, I'll go straight to the road, come back and get right
- 14:14back to bed. And I thought, Oh my God, you're
- 14:16looking for every exit path. The exit path doesn't serve you.
- 14:22So I kept going. I did say to myself, this is
- 14:26insane. Everybody in my life, nobody
- 14:27knows I'm doing this. I'm building in the dark.
- 14:31This is probably the dumbest thing ever if I get slaughtered
- 14:34on the pathway and become a statistic.
- 14:37But who am I in this moment? I want to be the woman who kept
- 14:43going. I wanna be the one who confronts
- 14:46what I need to confront on this walk.
- 14:48And I need to be the one who doesn't give up when it's
- 14:51convenient because what's on the other side is going to be worth
- 14:54it and I can do hard things. So I keep walking and I come
- 14:59eventually down the path and I'm stumbling over roots.
- 15:01And I said the light is still hardly working.
- 15:03I'm pretty sure at this point my light will not work all the way
- 15:06around my pathway. But I'm thinking will
- 15:08eventually. Don, will dawn stay the course.
- 15:11And as I came around the first curve and I started to come back
- 15:14towards the lake, I saw a light in the distance and the light in
- 15:17the distance I thought, oh, great.
- 15:20And I totally exhaled. That's the road.
- 15:23I'm going to see that as a actually a a lamppost and I'm
- 15:27going to walk towards the lamppost, get back on the safe
- 15:29road and come back. And again, I'm still looking now
- 15:31over and over and over again for the exit ramp until every
- 15:34realized the lamp was moving. And I thought, Holy Dinah, I'm
- 15:38going to. That's another person on the
- 15:40path in the dark. I'm gonna have to meet a
- 15:44stranger in a dark space where my body could be tossed.
- 15:49I mean, if my brain is just irrational at this point.
- 15:51And I was like, OK, well, you got to decide.
- 15:55And I thought, well, hopefully they're with a pet because, you
- 15:58know, pets. If pets like humans, then the
- 16:00humans, probably a good human. There was no pet and this person
- 16:04was coming towards me and they were running with a headlight
- 16:06lamp on. Guess what, my friends?
- 16:12It was another woman, another woman in the dark.
- 16:16She was not going my direction, but she was confident in the
- 16:19dark. And I also thought in that
- 16:22moment, she's a beacon for me because I learned the lesson.
- 16:26She's got a brighter light, she's certain she's running and
- 16:31there are others in the dark. And so after I exhaled and she
- 16:37said hello and I said hello and we parked, Father passed and I
- 16:40thought, wow, what a lesson you got to build in the dark.
- 16:45And there are other women building businesses in the dark.
- 16:47And if you're in the dark building, bring a bigger light,
- 16:50turn the light on. And also don't be afraid to
- 16:53accelerate on a path you can't see.
- 16:55Trust your instincts, trust your vision, and set that in motion.
- 17:01And so I start to feel like This is why I'm on this path.
- 17:06I am building in the dark. I need a bigger light and I need
- 17:09to trust myself more. So as I keep walking on this
- 17:12path, I also come around a corner and there's all kinds of
- 17:17dead logs in the water. And I was frightened of the
- 17:21death that I had perceived in that ecosystem.
- 17:26And my brain started to play tricks on me.
- 17:29I kept walking along the path. It still pitched dark.
- 17:32It's still really hard to see it.
- 17:34I've gone now over Brooks. I've started to climb up some
- 17:37small hills. And I start to let my brain
- 17:43filter untruths. I came to a log on the road
- 17:48which my brain convinced me was a dead animal and half dead deer
- 17:54in obstruction of my path. And I was like, well OK, it's a
- 17:59dead deer. It's a dead deer.
- 18:00It is what it is. But then obviously I thought to
- 18:03myself, it's not what it is. It's actually a log.
- 18:05Christine, do not let your mind play tricks on you.
- 18:08Challenge yourself to see what is not, what is not, which I
- 18:14think is a really important lesson that you're building your
- 18:16business. Really question and watch your
- 18:22mind because you're going to need to know you can do hard
- 18:26things. You're going to need to see
- 18:28things for what they are. You're going to need to build in
- 18:30the dark, and you're going to need to equip yourself to be
- 18:34effective at navigating whatever comes your way.
- 18:37Because I wasn't going to change the fact it was a deer, but I
- 18:41had to go past it anyway. And so as I kept walking down
- 18:45this path, eventually I could start to see that light was
- 18:48coming, sunrise was coming. It was still a long way away.
- 18:52And I had when I set out, started my timer on my watch
- 18:57because I thought, well, I don't really know the path because I
- 19:00didn't actually ever see a map. I thought, well, I know my body.
- 19:04I'll likely walk this seven K thing in an hour, an hour and a
- 19:09half. So I put a timer on for an hour
- 19:12and as I come around my first hour, my alarm goes off and I
- 19:16thought, Oh yeah, no, I'm a long way from where the end goal is.
- 19:21And there's a lesson there. You may think something will
- 19:25take a certain amount of time. Your ability to predict that
- 19:28amount of time is usually utter nonsense.
- 19:31Things are going to take longer than you think.
- 19:35Just plan for that and then add margin.
- 19:38I had added margin and I knew that I would still be back, able
- 19:41to run my retreat even if this took me another 45 minutes.
- 19:47So I kept going. As dawn starts to arise though,
- 19:50guess what I started to notice on the pathway?
- 19:54I started to see other human beings, but they were always in
- 19:56pairs. And guess who was it?
- 19:58Women in Paris. And I think there's a great
- 20:01lesson here, which is as you start to see a dawn, as you
- 20:05start to see momentum, others will come along in the journey.
- 20:09But you had to start solo, you had to start in the dark.
- 20:12And when it starts to be less scary, when it starts to be more
- 20:15safe, others will lock arms with you and you need to stay in the
- 20:18pathway. To let that natural phenomenon
- 20:21come your way. Cause I did start to see women
- 20:24in pairs. I did start to see their
- 20:26animation, their conversation, their willingness to take up
- 20:30space and a bigger amount of it. So I keep walking, passing other
- 20:35women, saying hello. And I thought, wow, I can't
- 20:37believe all the people who are challenging themselves are all
- 20:40women and the guys. I think we don't give ourselves
- 20:43enough credit. And yet this reminded me Find
- 20:47your tribe. Because there are lots of people
- 20:50at home taking the same route. There's a lot of people not
- 20:54challenging themselves. But my people are the people
- 20:56running in the dark. My people are the ones who are
- 20:58the early adopters and my people are the ones who say I will feel
- 21:01their fear and do it anyway. So as I'm rounding the third
- 21:05quarter mark, I'm starting to come back into what I think is
- 21:07the final stretch. I find a pathway which I think I
- 21:12now see, and it splits into different directions. 1 is a
- 21:16steep climb and 1 is a flatter more direct route which I
- 21:20believe I should take state to the lake.
- 21:25That was my whole philosophy stage to what you are tracking.
- 21:29So I took the shortcut. Turned out to be not a shortcut.
- 21:33I pursued this path until I got to a whole bunch of boulders and
- 21:36I thought, well, I could scramble over the rocks, but I
- 21:39don't know where I'm going and I don't know if it will actually
- 21:41be safe to do that and I could end up in the lake.
- 21:44So maybe I need to go back to the other path.
- 21:47So I turned around and had to come back on a path because it
- 21:52wasn't on the right one. And there's a great lesson in
- 21:55that. The first path might not be the
- 21:57right path. It is important that you know
- 21:59that to course correct yourself because what I wanted to avoid
- 22:02was the steep climb. I wanted a shortcut that wasn't
- 22:05a shortcut. And I had then to make twice the
- 22:08effort to come back before I just had to take a giant deep
- 22:10breath and said you have to make the climb.
- 22:13You're not at the end and so there's also a great lesson on
- 22:18your journey. There will be unexpected detours
- 22:22on your journey. There's going to be another push
- 22:25when you thought you were done and you got to commit to doing
- 22:28it. So as I took a deep breath, I
- 22:31started the climb and I picked up a Talisman.
- 22:37For those of you that are watching this, this is the
- 22:40Talisman I picked up on it. It's a rock.
- 22:43It actually fits directly in my hand and it allowed me to focus
- 22:48on my hand and not the climb and the fact that I was oxygen
- 22:52deprived. When I got to the top, I looked
- 22:58back at the road I'd carried, I looked back at the lake that was
- 23:01now starting to be seen, and I was proud of myself.
- 23:06There was nobody there to cheer for me.
- 23:08I had to cheer for myself. And I had to say I'm proud that
- 23:12I didn't deter and I started. I'm glad I let my mind run and
- 23:19challenge myself. I'm glad I didn't fall short of
- 23:26what was possible to see the summit in the climb I had taken.
- 23:31And so I took a moment and I took a video and I looked at all
- 23:35the grandfather trees I was standing in and thought, I stand
- 23:39tall like they do because of the proudness I felt for my own
- 23:43courage. Cause you've got to have mentors
- 23:47in your life that will challenge you.
- 23:49Set yourself and manage your mindset.
- 23:51Because out throughout this walk I could hear people saying you
- 23:54could do hard things. Do the thing that scares you.
- 23:56You are capable. Do not let the easy stuff be the
- 23:58hard stuff. The hard stuff will be plenty
- 24:00hard. And when it's plenty hard to
- 24:02take a deep breath and keep going.
- 24:04And as I started to come down the summit, I also started to
- 24:09see more civilization. I saw a beautiful manicured
- 24:12beach and thought, I want to come back and play here.
- 24:15Not just did I want to do the work, do I want the reward?
- 24:18I want the reward and the play to be part of the journey.
- 24:21And I kept going. Then I wasn't done, guys.
- 24:24I had one more hurdle to face. I didn't actually know what the
- 24:27property I'd stayed at looked like from the back.
- 24:30I didn't know what it looked like in the light because it
- 24:33only left it in the dark. And as I started to walk, I
- 24:36thought, I think I've gone too far.
- 24:38I think I I walked past my finish line and I almost stopped
- 24:45until I was reminded once again by what a mentor said to me.
- 24:48Great athletes don't train for the finish line.
- 24:51They finish for five yards past it.
- 24:54Keep going. Guess what?
- 24:56Five years past, what I thought was the finish line was the gate
- 25:00that I entered and exited from. I look back now at this journey
- 25:06and I see so many lessons for myself.
- 25:09I see so many lessons for my clients, and I hope this has
- 25:12been a lesson for you. The following day on our
- 25:15retreat, we actually rewalk this path as a collective, a group of
- 25:19women in daylight. And it's fascinating to see what
- 25:22I saw. I walked them through where I
- 25:24saw, you know, the first cut back where I thought I was
- 25:27crazy. I saw, I showed them where I
- 25:29thought there was a dead deer. I showed them, you know, the
- 25:32path that I had gotten off course with.
- 25:34I walked them through it. But here's the things I didn't
- 25:36see when I was in the dark. I didn't see that there were
- 25:41giant metal posts in the way. I just navigated them without
- 25:45thought. I didn't see that there was a
- 25:47fence that had actually been changed 3 minutes before I hit
- 25:52it when I walked around the lake because it wasn't open till the
- 25:55moment at this certain hour when I was on the path.
- 25:59There was a lot of great lessons.
- 26:01I want you to take this episode and challenge yourself to do
- 26:05something hard today. I want you to take this lesson
- 26:08and remind yourself, build in the dark.
- 26:10Get the light on, do the hard things.
- 26:13Don't give up when you have your mind playing tricks on you.
- 26:19If you need to course, correct your course correct.
- 26:21If you need to take a deep breath and climb, climb.
- 26:23If you need to start recognizing when it's time to build team and
- 26:27take others with you on the journey, lean in.
- 26:30I know this. It's almost profound things I
- 26:32have in my head that was gifted to me by a mentor, which is you
- 26:35belong in every room. My job is to open the door.
