Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Fleur Fitzsimons: PSA National Secretary on David Seymour's call to limit government ministers
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Seymour wants to clean out cabinet. We've got eighty one
- 0:03Speaker 1: portfolios for ministers. Ireland, similar sized country to US, has seventeen.
- 0:08Speaker 1: Why do we need a racing minister, a Minister for Auckland,
- 0:12Speaker 1: a minister for child poverty reduction? Flurfit Simon's PSA National
- 0:16Speaker 1: secretary with me this morning for good morning, Good morning. Now,
- 0:20Speaker 1: I think you're going to agree with Seymour here. I
- 0:22Speaker 1: think you're going to come on here and you're going
- 0:23Speaker 1: to say, actually, there's too much double up. It's making
- 0:27Speaker 1: life difficult for public servants.
- 0:29Speaker 2: Cut them back, not this morning. I actually just think
- 0:33Speaker 2: it's a typical Act Party attack on the public service
- 0:37Speaker 2: and really our populist dog whist or not a serious proposal.
- 0:42Speaker 2: He himself recognizes that it's not something that he's actually proposing.
- 0:45Speaker 2: He's really just floating it.
- 0:47Speaker 1: Be hand on, Helen, Well, how is this an attack
- 0:49Speaker 1: on the public service? When he's saying the line there
- 0:52Speaker 1: are too many lines of communication, too many reporting lines.
- 0:56Speaker 1: It's making life harder for the public service to know
- 0:59Speaker 1: which master they're serving.
- 1:02Speaker 2: He's also saying we should get rid of a whole
- 1:05Speaker 2: range of existing public service agencies. He's very clear about that,
- 1:09Speaker 2: and that's because the X Party don't actually believe in
- 1:12Speaker 2: proper funded public services that deliver for all New Zealanders.
- 1:17Speaker 2: They prefer a privatized model of delivery of public idology
- 1:22Speaker 2: sitting behind them.
- 1:23Speaker 1: Let's look at what he's saying. He's saying, we have
- 1:25Speaker 1: eighty one portfolios for our cabinet of twenty ministers or
- 1:30Speaker 1: whatever it is. How many do you do you know
- 1:33Speaker 1: how many? Ireland has.
- 1:35Speaker 2: A lot less seventeen, not saying.
- 1:38Speaker 1: Do you know how many? Malway has fewer than twenty,
- 1:41Speaker 1: Finland's the same, The UK and Canada, for good mistakes,
- 1:44Speaker 1: and the US all have fewer than thirty. How does
- 1:48Speaker 1: this make sense?
- 1:50Speaker 2: Those portfolios are political calls which are up to prime
- 1:53Speaker 2: ministers and leaders, and I'd say it's a bit hypocritical
- 1:57Speaker 2: for David Seymour to be saying he wants to reduce
- 1:59Speaker 2: the both times active being in government. Recently they've created agencies,
- 2:03Speaker 2: firstly the Productivity Commission and more recently the Ministry for Regulation.
- 2:08Speaker 2: But actually, if we think about the problems facing New Zealand,
- 2:13Speaker 2: do we need to invest more in public services like
- 2:16Speaker 2: health and education, law and order, in defense, or do
- 2:20Speaker 2: we need to invest less. They are investing significantly less
- 2:23Speaker 2: on top of job cuts that they imposed last year.
- 2:26Speaker 1: They're putting more into health. They're putting more into health
- 2:29Speaker 1: than labor promise to.
- 2:30Speaker 2: They are not putting more into health than previous governments.
- 2:33Speaker 1: They are not putting more into health than labor promise to.
- 2:36Speaker 2: Everyone puts more. That is not correct. They already cut
- 2:39Speaker 2: jobs and how they already come. Tell that to a
- 2:43Speaker 2: worker that's lost their job. That to somebody. I'm not
- 2:46Speaker 2: vacancy filled.
- 2:47Speaker 1: I'm not saying so. I'm not saying people aren't losing
- 2:50Speaker 1: their jobs. Money is being reprioritized. You cannot tell me
- 2:55Speaker 1: yes it is. You cannot tell me that the health bund.
- 2:58Speaker 2: The people are buying it onto fun text caut.
- 3:01Speaker 1: Okay, tell me what his borrowing, Tell me what flir.
- 3:04Speaker 1: Tell me what the health budget is, and tell me
- 3:06Speaker 1: how different it is to what labor promised.
- 3:09Speaker 2: Our health budget has been cut by the skin.
- 3:12Speaker 1: Tell me so, tell me how much the health budget
- 3:15Speaker 1: is and how different it is to what labor promised.
- 3:17Speaker 1: Because you said that it's different, you said that it's
- 3:20Speaker 1: lest Okay, I will.
- 3:21Speaker 2: Tell you, first of all, if I have impost cuts
- 3:23Speaker 2: on data and digital on all of the.
- 3:27Speaker 1: I want a number, flur, I want a number.
- 3:29Speaker 2: You can't. I don't know today how the problem is,
- 3:33Speaker 2: but I can tell you it's okay.
- 3:35Speaker 1: Well that's going on a hope and a dream. We
- 3:38Speaker 1: have to leave it there because I'm running out of time.
- 3:40Speaker 1: But that's f if it. Simon's from the PSA, See
