- 0:00Speaker 1: And now we know that the No More Family Violence
- 0:02Speaker 1: Ride with Charlie king It's happening this weekend with the
- 0:05Speaker 1: convoy of bikes setting off from Hidden Valley on Saturday afternoon,
- 0:10Speaker 1: I believe, and event organizer Marguerite Bowen joins me in
- 0:15Speaker 1: the studio to tell us a little bit more. Good
- 0:17Speaker 1: morning to you, Margarite.
- 0:18Speaker 2: Oh, good money, Katie. It's nice to be here again
- 0:20Speaker 2: and talk about this amazingly worthy cause for people to
- 0:25Speaker 2: join in and participate.
- 0:26Speaker 1: It is such an amazing cause and something that was
- 0:29Speaker 1: founded by Charlie quite a large number of years ago,
- 0:33Speaker 1: the No More Campaign, and a really wonderful reason for
- 0:37Speaker 1: everybody to get together and go on this ride on
- 0:39Speaker 1: the weekend, isn't.
- 0:40Speaker 2: It absolutely Katie. Yes, I've got a bit of information here.
- 0:43Speaker 2: So it's going back to about two thousand and six
- 0:45Speaker 2: when the campaign began and sadly, our Charlie King am
- 0:49Speaker 2: is the founder of the campaign and it is an
- 0:53Speaker 2: initiative that addresses prevention of domestic and family violence through
- 0:57Speaker 2: a whole of the community approach. It's looking at working
- 1:01Speaker 2: with men and service providers and a way to community
- 1:04Speaker 2: to develop local responses to reduce the incidents of domesticond
- 1:07Speaker 2: family by changing men's behavior and atitude towards women with
- 1:11Speaker 2: the safety of women and children as the primary objective.
- 1:14Speaker 2: And it is quite a good opportunity for the motorbike
- 1:19Speaker 2: club writing community of Darwin and anybody else that might
- 1:22Speaker 2: wish to come up to Darwin for a special event
- 1:24Speaker 2: to join in in that ride.
- 1:27Speaker 1: Now, to anybody who's never taken part in it or
- 1:29Speaker 1: isn't familiar with the Weekends right, tell us a little
- 1:32Speaker 1: bit more about it in terms of where it starts
- 1:35Speaker 1: and you know what it's all going to be about.
- 1:39Speaker 2: Yes, we start gathering from about four thirty at the
- 1:43Speaker 2: Hidden Valley Model Sports Complex and there will be signs
- 1:47Speaker 2: as you are turned into the complex, you turn to
- 1:50Speaker 2: the left where the officers are and that's where we
- 1:53Speaker 2: will get from about four thirty. We will be commencing
- 1:57Speaker 2: our right at five point thirty sharp and hopefully we
- 2:01Speaker 2: can get a lap around the Hidden Valley race track,
- 2:04Speaker 2: which will be a bit of an attraction for us
- 2:06Speaker 2: to be out there, and we certainly have all the
- 2:09Speaker 2: bikes and people that ride a bike and people that
- 2:13Speaker 2: like to be appillion to come along. We will be
- 2:16Speaker 2: going on onto Tager Brandon drive across through Mitchell Street,
- 2:22Speaker 2: down back to Stuart Highway, I left to McMillan's Road
- 2:26Speaker 2: and then to Aballa Road and finishing off with linking
- 2:30Speaker 2: arms at the oval of the Rugby Union Stadium at Marah.
- 2:34Speaker 1: And that's such a moving part of the whole ride,
- 2:38Speaker 1: I reckon. When you see everybody there together with their
- 2:41Speaker 1: arms linked, it is like it's a really strong message
- 2:45Speaker 1: and a really strong thing to do.
- 2:47Speaker 2: Yes, in the past we've been linking arms with the
- 2:51Speaker 2: os rules plays at the Nightcliff Oval and Charlie said
- 2:55Speaker 2: perhaps we should give a Rugby Union players an opportunity
- 2:58Speaker 2: to link arms this year, and it certainly is. It's
- 3:01Speaker 2: amazing to see people in a big circle with big
- 3:06Speaker 2: rugby players with gray bearded or not bearded, biker riders
- 3:11Speaker 2: and the girls and boys and everybody else in a
- 3:13Speaker 2: linking in for one specific cause, which is to prevent
- 3:17Speaker 2: and domestic violence and to make people aware of how
- 3:22Speaker 2: what it is and how that it is that it
- 3:25Speaker 2: is there and for us to be aware of trying
- 3:27Speaker 2: to avoid it.
- 3:28Speaker 1: Yeah, yes, spot on. Now it's all in the name
- 3:31Speaker 1: of a good cause, as we all know. And you've
- 3:34Speaker 1: just touched on that, and I know that there is
- 3:36Speaker 1: going to be some money raised as well. How exactly
- 3:39Speaker 1: are you are you doing that part?
- 3:41Speaker 2: Yes, we do not take any money for a registration.
- 3:45Speaker 2: We simply invite people to come along and participate, and
- 3:49Speaker 2: we hope that we will have one hundred, one hundred
- 3:51Speaker 2: and fifty, maybe two hundred bikes or even more. So
- 3:53Speaker 2: I do encourage and invite all the motorbike riders to
- 3:57Speaker 2: come along and participate. There is no limit on the
- 4:00Speaker 2: numbers we will have. I have. I've managed to get
- 4:03Speaker 2: together some patches if anybody likes to have their patch
- 4:07Speaker 2: on their vest.
- 4:09Speaker 1: That is all.
- 4:10Speaker 2: Everything's been donated, so there is absolutely no money that
- 4:13Speaker 2: anybody makes out of it. But if any of you wishes,
- 4:15Speaker 2: anybody wishes to buy a patch, you know five ten dollars.
- 4:18Speaker 2: There will be buckets going around to collect donations, so
- 4:21Speaker 2: please come along and bring some cash to put into
- 4:24Speaker 2: the bucket. In the past, we've managed to get some
- 4:27Speaker 2: money together from the donations, and we've donated seven hundred
- 4:31Speaker 2: and fifty dollars to the Dornhouse last year and the
- 4:35Speaker 2: seven hundred and fifty dollars to the Catholic Care Office
- 4:39Speaker 2: and we did ask them how the money has been spent,
- 4:43Speaker 2: and it was great to hear that there was a
- 4:46Speaker 2: holiday a time where the money was spent on organizing
- 4:53Speaker 2: activities for the children and there was some presents for
- 4:56Speaker 2: the children, and so it was really good actually to
- 4:58Speaker 2: see the money going towards a good because there were
- 5:00Speaker 2: some courses. Also we know that there are courses running
- 5:04Speaker 2: for the awareness of domestic vallence and prevention, and that
- 5:09Speaker 2: money is also being put tools that cause.
- 5:11Speaker 1: Such an important cause and such. You know, it is
- 5:14Speaker 1: something that's so prevalentere in the Northern Territory. So I
- 5:16Speaker 1: think it's such an important thing to do, Marguerite. If
- 5:20Speaker 1: there is anybody listening this morning who's thinking I would
- 5:23Speaker 1: like to take part, or they're wondering a little bit more,
- 5:26Speaker 1: they want a bit more details, Should they head to
- 5:27Speaker 1: your Facebook page or what's the best way to go?
- 5:30Speaker 2: Absolutely, they certainly can go on a Facebook page. There
- 5:37Speaker 2: will be a flyer poster about the evenge and also
- 5:42Speaker 2: I have distributed fliers to motorbike shops yesterday, beautiful color
- 5:46Speaker 2: colorful fliers donated by Iron Buck. Thanks Sean for the printing.
- 5:51Speaker 2: So if anybody goes to cyclones or to Yamaha or
- 5:55Speaker 2: to Harley Davidson's shops. There are posters there if you
- 5:58Speaker 2: like to collect one, and in any event, the event
- 6:01Speaker 2: is very well organized. Of course, we have an insurance,
- 6:04Speaker 2: of course, a police. I just like to say thank
- 6:07Speaker 2: you to our police who have offered their assistance to
- 6:11Speaker 2: provide esculture, and thank you to the Anti government that
- 6:14Speaker 2: have provided their assistance by way of giving us a
- 6:18Speaker 2: green light wave so we won't be getting separated along
- 6:23Speaker 2: the way. We have a lot of other sponsors that
- 6:26Speaker 2: I'll certainly mention at the beginning of the ride, but
- 6:30Speaker 2: we really are very grateful also to the traffic works
- 6:33Speaker 2: and Chris Boyerd that have provided road management and Shannon's
- 6:38Speaker 2: Insurance that also provided their funds to pay for the
- 6:41Speaker 2: insurance of the event. And I do like to encourage
- 6:43Speaker 2: people to come along. There will be Shannon's Insurance by
- 6:46Speaker 2: the way at the start that will be offering their services,
- 6:49Speaker 2: that will have their stall if you like to come
- 6:51Speaker 2: along and perhaps ask them to to help you with
- 6:53Speaker 2: insurance on the bike. So that's something else that I
- 6:55Speaker 2: would really.
- 6:56Speaker 1: Like to people.
- 6:58Speaker 2: People know that we have a lot of opportunities to
- 7:01Speaker 2: participate for the cause and just be there and meet
- 7:05Speaker 2: other fellow writers.
- 7:06Speaker 1: Well, good stuff, Marguerite Bowen, It is always lovely to
- 7:09Speaker 1: speak to you. I know that you're heavily involved in
- 7:11Speaker 1: the organization of this and have been for quite a
- 7:14Speaker 1: few years now, haven't you.
- 7:16Speaker 2: Yes, I do part of my practice. I'm a humble
- 7:20Speaker 2: local legal practitioner, and one of the things that I
- 7:23Speaker 2: do within my practice is to assist people with their
- 7:26Speaker 2: domestic violence cases in court and in generally in life.
- 7:29Speaker 2: You know, obviously giving some advice about the whole situation
- 7:33Speaker 2: and the issues about not going to God or going
- 7:36Speaker 2: to court and dealing with the issue of domestic violence.
- 7:39Speaker 2: And it certainly is a part of our life. And
- 7:44Speaker 2: I did manage to mention the issue of domestic violence
- 7:48Speaker 2: that one of our functions, and Charlie happened to be there,
- 7:51Speaker 2: and so know, how about if we have a bike
- 7:53Speaker 2: ride about it. You know, we certainly started doing it
- 7:56Speaker 2: from that mansion and I think we've been doing it
- 7:59Speaker 2: since seventeen. I think it was the first one on,
- 8:03Speaker 2: so it's been going on. We had a bit of
- 8:05Speaker 2: a break there with COVID, but we've been there and
- 8:08Speaker 2: every other year.
- 8:09Speaker 1: Good on you. I know that it is it does
- 8:11Speaker 1: take a lot of work to put together events like this,
- 8:14Speaker 1: so a big you know, good on you and congratulations
- 8:16Speaker 1: for the work that you do within the community. I
- 8:19Speaker 1: know that it can be tough work and yeah, I
- 8:22Speaker 1: appreciate you coming on ta have a chat with us
- 8:23Speaker 1: about it this morning.
- 8:24Speaker 2: Thank you so much for having me Kate, and I
- 8:26Speaker 2: hope everybody is listening and everybody that has an opportunity
- 8:30Speaker 2: and bake some comes along and participate in that ride.
- 8:33Speaker 2: And I do thank very much for all the support
- 8:35Speaker 2: to all the people that have helped to assist with this,
- 8:39Speaker 2: with organizing this because it is a lot of event,
- 8:41Speaker 2: but it doesn't matter how hard it is, because the
- 8:42Speaker 2: main message is there for us to get across and
- 8:45Speaker 2: that's the main thing, So come along and join in
- 8:47Speaker 2: the raid.
- 8:48Speaker 1: Absolutely well, Marguerite Bowen, thank you so much for your
- 8:50Speaker 1: time this morning. Always appreciate you coming into the studio.
- 8:53Speaker 2: Thank you.
