• 1:57
Speaker 8: host Hollis Lewis, Hello, Lisa Odie, Hello, and ladies and gentlemen.
• 2:03
  Speaker 2: Today.
• 2:04
Speaker 8: I have to say that I am like super happy
• 2:08
Speaker 8: and actually kind of star struck a little bit because
• 2:11
  Speaker 8: I have I have. I have a great quarterback that
• 2:19
Speaker 8: I'm holding on to the name. I know some folks
• 2:21
Speaker 8: may already know, because I know that Hollis couldn't hold
• 2:24
Speaker 8: it all right, So we have Dante called Pepper on
• 2:31
  Speaker 8: our show today.
• 2:32
Speaker 2: Hey, man, how you doing.
• 2:34
  Speaker 9: What's up? Car?
• 2:37
  Speaker 2: I'm I'm great.
• 2:38
Speaker 8: And in case you didn't know, like I said, I
• 2:40
Speaker 8: have Hollis Lewis, what's up?
• 2:42
  Speaker 9: Bro?
• 2:42
  Speaker 2: And Lisa Odi?
• 2:44
Speaker 10: Hey, Dante, Hello, Hello, Hello.
• 2:48
Speaker 8: So you know I have I have this introduction for you,
• 2:52
Speaker 8: but I'm gonna I'm gonna kind of wait on it
• 2:54
Speaker 8: because here's one of the questions that I have been
• 2:59
Speaker 8: or let me say, how you have impressed me? Okay,
• 3:02
Speaker 8: and I'm not trying to make you uncomfortable, but I
• 3:07
Speaker 8: know you know, everybody knows athletes and for the most part,
• 3:12
Speaker 8: high profile, which I consider you as being a high
• 3:15
Speaker 8: profile athlete. In most cases, they can be funny, you
• 3:21
Speaker 8: know what I'm saying, Like they don't want to necessarily
• 3:24
Speaker 8: always chat with anybody. And man, when we were together
• 3:30
Speaker 8: this past trip that we had up there with with
• 3:33
Speaker 8: Buddy Becker, br I watched you. You know, you you
• 3:39
Speaker 8: signed anything and everything that somebody brought to you, and
• 3:44
  Speaker 8: you were cordial.
• 3:45
Speaker 2: You were cordial to the other players.
• 3:48
Speaker 8: And I just want to give you, like huge, huge
• 3:52
Speaker 8: props because I know a ton of players who are
• 3:54
Speaker 8: just not that way, and they don't even maybe have
• 3:57
  Speaker 8: what you had.
• 4:00
Speaker 9: Man, I appreciate your car, man, but you gotta look
• 4:02
Speaker 9: at it like this. I'm I'm from o Calli, Florida, Man,
• 4:05
Speaker 9: a small country town here in Florida, and I remember
• 4:08
Speaker 9: growing up and we didn't have a whole lot of
• 4:11
Speaker 9: pro athletes and celebrities around. So I mean, I look
• 4:16
Speaker 9: at mysels like anybody else. First of all, you know,
• 4:19
Speaker 9: I don't look at I'm busitan anybody anybody. And so,
• 4:23
Speaker 9: you know, I guess it goes back to how I
• 4:25
Speaker 9: was brought up and and how I was always taught
• 4:28
Speaker 9: to treat people how I want to be treated, you know.
• 4:31
Speaker 9: So that's kind of what it is. But I appreciate you, bro.
• 4:34
Speaker 8: Well, yeah, I just I just had to get that out. Hollis,
• 4:37
Speaker 8: And let me just give you a little background on Hollis.
• 4:39
Speaker 8: Hollis is one of the leaders in black quarterbacks here
• 4:45
Speaker 8: in West Virginia. It took us, it took us a
• 4:48
Speaker 8: while to kind of get black quarterbacks here, but Hollis
• 4:52
Speaker 8: Hollis was one of those. I coached him at West
• 4:56
Speaker 8: Virginia State and he and he played at uh.
• 4:59
Speaker 2: G W, which was which was not.
• 5:01
Speaker 8: There was not a lot of black folks there, but
• 5:03
Speaker 8: he had the opportunity to be one of our first
• 5:08
Speaker 8: black quarterbacks. So I'm sure he's got a lot of
• 5:11
Speaker 8: questions for you in regards to that.
• 5:14
Speaker 9: But U, man, it was my pleasure to much respect,
• 5:20
  Speaker 9: much respect man.
• 5:22
Speaker 8: You know, I always had fun watching you at UH
• 5:24
Speaker 8: at UH for the Minnesota Vikings because you know, at
• 5:27
Speaker 8: that time we was all about Randy Moss. We was
• 5:29
Speaker 8: watching every single game, so and by proxy watching you.
• 5:32
Speaker 8: But the question I had, I want to go back
• 5:35
Speaker 8: because you know, I actually lived in Central Florida for
• 5:37
Speaker 8: a while so familiar with the areas. So you going
• 5:40
Speaker 8: to UCF during that time, it wasn't a nationally recognized program.
• 5:46
Speaker 8: You had opportunities, but similar to Randy Mars, you ended
• 5:49
Speaker 8: up and maybe a lower division than your talented warranted.
• 5:53
Speaker 8: So you were able to lift that program up. In
• 5:56
Speaker 8: today's college football landscape, do you think that's possible? Do
• 6:00
Speaker 8: you think guys would sort of take that route? And
• 6:02
Speaker 8: just like I said, you were a four year starter
• 6:04
Speaker 8: or excuse me, played four years at UCF and really
• 6:07
Speaker 8: was I would say responsible for lifting that program up
• 6:10
  Speaker 8: to national prominence.
• 6:12
Speaker 9: Hey, man, I appreciate that. But but I tell you, man,
• 6:14
Speaker 9: I have some real dogs on my team with me, Man,
• 6:16
Speaker 9: some showing up dogs that worked just as hard as me,
• 6:20
Speaker 9: and some of them probably harder than me.
• 6:21
  Speaker 8: Man.
• 6:21
Speaker 9: So I I, you know, the quarterback get a lot
• 6:24
Speaker 9: of credit for when we have some sense. But also
• 6:26
Speaker 9: know you get blamed well you don't have some I know,
• 6:29
Speaker 9: I know how that goes. You know that too, But man, yeah, man,
• 6:33
Speaker 9: UCF was you know, the story of how I got
• 6:36
Speaker 9: there was h I was highly recruited coming out of
• 6:41
Speaker 9: going into my senior year of high school. And once
• 6:45
Speaker 9: my transcripts got out, pretty much my phone went from
• 6:49
Speaker 9: ringing off the hook every day to not ringing at all.
• 6:53
Speaker 9: And and so it was because I wouldn't taking care
• 6:56
Speaker 9: of my business in the classroom. I was a little immature,
• 6:59
Speaker 9: and you know, it was a wake up call for me.
• 7:03
Speaker 9: So during that time when nothing my phone wasn't ringing,
• 7:08
Speaker 9: it was one school that kept in contact with me,
• 7:11
Speaker 9: and that was Coase Paul Linsbery at UCM. He was
• 7:14
Speaker 9: offer the linement coach and he recruited to since the
• 7:16
Speaker 9: Florida area. So he what he did was he looked
• 7:19
Speaker 9: at my transcripts and he came and took me out
• 7:22
Speaker 9: of class one day and he and he, you know,
• 7:24
Speaker 9: he didn't know me very well, but he said, Dante,
• 7:25
Speaker 9: I looked at the transcripts, and then there's a possibility
• 7:30
Speaker 9: if you do these things right here, you can be
• 7:32
Speaker 9: elg by the end of your senior year and those
• 7:35
Speaker 9: things and tell me to I had to go back
• 7:38
Speaker 9: and take over some of my freshman classes and get
• 7:42
Speaker 9: aids at them. And I did that. And you know,
• 7:44
Speaker 9: he did this a lot knowing I was, you know,
• 7:46
Speaker 9: one type again eligible. He didn't know I was. I
• 7:48
Speaker 9: could have signed with anybody still. But because he did that,
• 7:53
Speaker 9: and and at the time, like I said, it was
• 7:57
Speaker 9: kind of like I was at a low point. I
• 7:58
Speaker 9: was like, dang, you know, I didn't know, you know,
• 8:00
Speaker 9: I could have played baseball or whatever. I really, I
• 8:02
Speaker 9: really wanted to be the first one about saying to
• 8:04
Speaker 9: go to college. And so I h once I got
• 8:09
Speaker 9: once I became eligible, I you know, see spurry your
• 8:13
Speaker 9: little hopes by me bout all these you know, top coaches.
• 8:17
Speaker 9: At the time, it was like a light switch picked
• 8:20
Speaker 9: back on and they were calling me again, like it
• 8:22
Speaker 9: like it never happened. For that whole summer, nobody would
• 8:25
Speaker 9: come it. So I say, you know what, I'm gonna
• 8:28
Speaker 9: go to U see up because I know these these
• 8:31
Speaker 9: people care about me more than just me playing football
• 8:36
Speaker 9: for them, and I would be a good hand. So
• 8:39
Speaker 9: that's why I ended up at you.
• 8:40
  Speaker 2: That's that's amazing.
• 8:41
Speaker 8: So and I think that's part of the story that
• 8:44
Speaker 8: maybe gets missing, that you actually got eligible and you
• 8:47
Speaker 8: could have just to what you just said, you could
• 8:49
Speaker 8: have win anywhere else, but you chose to go to UCF.
• 8:52
Speaker 8: So it wasn't like you had to go. You chose
• 8:54
Speaker 8: there after you know, they showed you the concern and
• 8:56
  Speaker 8: love for you.
• 8:58
Speaker 9: Yeah, and these coaches didn't really they would motivate me
• 9:01
Speaker 9: because they told me. I ain't gonna say with coach,
• 9:04
Speaker 9: but a few of them told me stuff like, you know,
• 9:07
Speaker 9: why do you want to go play in front of
• 9:08
Speaker 9: five thousand people when you could play in front of
• 9:10
Speaker 9: eighty five thousand every week on national TV and stuff
• 9:13
Speaker 9: like that. They didn't realize they was just motivate me
• 9:15
Speaker 9: to work harder and improve them. Wrong.
• 9:19
Speaker 11: Oh hey, Dante, thanks so much for coming on the
• 9:22
Speaker 11: podcast this evening with us. I was pumped all day
• 9:25
Speaker 11: for this conversation, so I'm pretty excited to be speaking
• 9:28
Speaker 11: with you right now. I just want to fast forward
• 9:32
Speaker 11: to the year two thousand and four in your NFL career.
• 9:36
Speaker 11: That was your most successful season in the league. I
• 9:38
Speaker 11: believe you set the single season record for most total
• 9:43
Speaker 11: yardage produced by an NFL quarterback. And also I'm sure
• 9:47
Speaker 11: Carl remembers this, Vikings reached the playoffs for the second time.
• 9:51
  Speaker 10: Under your watch.
• 9:52
Speaker 11: Looking back on that year, what are your thoughts and
• 9:55
Speaker 11: it's impact on your career for future reference?
• 9:59
Speaker 10: What was what? What did that do? Was that a
• 10:00
Speaker 10: turning point in your career in the NFL?
• 10:05
  Speaker 9: I wasn't say a turning point. I mean we we
• 10:07
Speaker 9: had a lot of success on offense, and I like
• 10:10
Speaker 9: to say, I uh, it was my third year with
• 10:15
Speaker 9: coach Scott Lenahan, who was my officeve coordinator, and he
• 10:19
Speaker 9: and I were on the same page. I'm telling you,
• 10:21
Speaker 9: it was like I knew what he was thinking every
• 10:23
Speaker 9: time he would call a play. I knew why he
• 10:26
Speaker 9: was calling it, and I knew what to look for,
• 10:29
Speaker 9: and I you know, I became a master of that offense.
• 10:32
Speaker 9: And and I think that attributed to a lot of succession. Obviously,
• 10:37
Speaker 9: I had, you know, players like Randy Marson, Nate Burton
• 10:40
Speaker 9: and Marcus Robinson and Kelly Campbell and also Mo Williams,
• 10:44
Speaker 9: Michael Benett, Ontario Smith will do more guys that were great,
• 10:48
Speaker 9: great football players around me. And I had great office
• 10:50
Speaker 9: in linement as well, Matt Burke and the crew. So man,
• 10:53
Speaker 9: it was it was. It was an amazing season offensively
• 10:57
Speaker 9: for us, and and I think we were just cooking
• 10:59
Speaker 9: and all still of the is because, like I said,
• 11:01
Speaker 9: the office coordinator myself, it was our third year together
• 11:04
Speaker 9: and I had never been with office office coordinator more
• 11:06
Speaker 9: than a year at time, so you know, it was
• 11:09
Speaker 9: it was. It was a combination of those things, but
• 11:11
Speaker 9: it was a great It was a great year. We
• 11:13
Speaker 9: put up a lot of points and you know, we
• 11:15
Speaker 9: we made it difficult for defenses to stop us. But yeah,
• 11:20
Speaker 9: it was great, and you know, it's just unfortunately, you know,
• 11:23
Speaker 9: the next year, I got hurt. But yeah, and Lanta
• 11:27
Speaker 9: had left, you know, because Atlanta had left you know
• 11:29
Speaker 9: that that season and went to take a job in
• 11:31
Speaker 9: Saint Louis as well. So it combinations of things, but
• 11:35
Speaker 9: it was it was a good year, and I'm I
• 11:37
Speaker 9: was happy to be able to put forth the numbers
• 11:40
  Speaker 9: and had success.
• 11:41
Speaker 8: We had Sure, Dante, it when I look at your
• 11:47
Speaker 8: your height and weight, it says six four to sixty. Yeah,
• 11:53
Speaker 8: I have to I'm gonna have to assume at some
• 11:55
Speaker 8: point somebody was trying to tell you to play something else.
• 11:59
Speaker 9: Yeah, well, hey, to be honest with you. Thenny Green,
• 12:02
Speaker 9: my first day in Minnesota, my very first day there,
• 12:07
Speaker 9: they got me scared. I was I was about sixty four.
• 12:10
Speaker 9: I was two sixty six my very first day. And
• 12:15
Speaker 9: Denny Green, he said, Lady said, Dante, I'm gonna tell
• 12:18
Speaker 9: you right now, I'm not concerned with and wait. I
• 12:22
Speaker 9: know you're gonna take your business and be prepared. I
• 12:24
Speaker 9: just want to make sure that you physically and be
• 12:28
Speaker 9: in the best shape that you possibly can be in.
• 12:30
Speaker 9: He said, it's not gonna be a problem. I said, no, sir,
• 12:32
Speaker 9: I don't have a problem. And he never bothered me
• 12:35
Speaker 9: and buy my weight that I never but he did
• 12:38
Speaker 9: tell me if he said, I just want you a
• 12:39
Speaker 9: hundred two seventy five. So really that was my they
• 12:42
Speaker 9: want him so sometimes the way I was wearing two,
• 12:44
Speaker 9: even though four, I was like two seventy. But I
• 12:46
Speaker 9: was my body fan was low. I was just a big,
• 12:50
Speaker 9: big physical fans through that. I worked hard and all season,
• 12:57
Speaker 9: so I was preparing my body for the season and
• 13:00
Speaker 9: trying to prevent injuries and stuff like that. But I
• 13:03
Speaker 9: never you know, even I was a bigger guy people.
• 13:06
Speaker 9: I had a high school coach that didn't try to
• 13:09
Speaker 9: move me. They let me pay quarterback. And in high school,
• 13:13
Speaker 9: you know, my senior year, I was I was, I
• 13:15
Speaker 9: was thinking I was about two forty five, two fifty,
• 13:18
Speaker 9: you know. Yeah, so I was always a big kid.
• 13:22
Speaker 9: In college, you know, coach Mike cruz ach h he
• 13:26
Speaker 9: was my office coordinator and then became the head coach,
• 13:29
Speaker 9: and he never bothered me about obviously changer. So it
• 13:32
Speaker 9: was I was lucky that I had coaches that didn't
• 13:35
Speaker 9: try to change my position. I was very lucky that
• 13:38
Speaker 9: I had good coaches as well.
• 13:40
Speaker 8: And I'd say too that your quarterback skills had to
• 13:44
Speaker 8: have been visible to them for them to even not
• 13:49
Speaker 8: not to bother you and or let you just go,
• 13:52
Speaker 8: because in most cases there's no way that that no
• 13:57
Speaker 8: one's going to be in that position unless they've got
• 14:00
Speaker 8: some skill set that coaches can actually literally.
• 14:04
Speaker 9: Sit yes, But I will say that a couple of
• 14:07
Speaker 9: couple of colleges, and I'm gonna just say at the
• 14:10
Speaker 9: University of Florida was one of them, and there's a
• 14:12
Speaker 9: couple other ones like ron Zuk was the office with
• 14:15
Speaker 9: the defense coordinator at the time at Florida my senior year,
• 14:19
Speaker 9: and his very first question to me, he was like, hey,
• 14:22
Speaker 9: you ever't played defense? I was like, I was looking
• 14:29
Speaker 9: at him sideways. ID.
• 14:35
Speaker 8: So, So when you get to Minnesota and obviously, and
• 14:38
Speaker 8: I believe Randy Moss was already there, how exciting? How
• 14:42
Speaker 8: excited were you to be able to have a receiver
• 14:46
Speaker 8: of that caliber where because you had a big you
• 14:48
Speaker 8: had a big arm, and you can just really just
• 14:51
Speaker 8: let it go with a guy like Randy Moss.
• 14:54
Speaker 9: Yeah, I mean I was excited. Denny. Denny told me
• 14:57
Speaker 9: what they they called me. I was at the draft
• 14:59
Speaker 9: and about to be honest with you, I had no
• 15:01
Speaker 9: idea I was going to go to Minnesota because you know,
• 15:04
Speaker 9: I didn't talk to Minnesota one time. From the time
• 15:08
Speaker 9: my last came out senior year in college until the draft,
• 15:11
Speaker 9: I didn't even speak to Minnesota one not a scout
• 15:14
Speaker 9: not a call, and I'm gonna tell you interesting story. Man. Uh,
• 15:18
Speaker 9: Danny Green called me and I was in the in
• 15:21
Speaker 9: the green room at the draft. He called me, and
• 15:22
Speaker 9: of course it was, hey, do you want to be
• 15:24
Speaker 9: in Minnesota, Miking? And I'm like, of course I want
• 15:26
Speaker 9: to be What I'm gonna say, no, Yeah, I didn't care.
• 15:32
Speaker 9: You know, I knew that Rand the grun An was there,
• 15:34
Speaker 9: Jeff George, but I didn't care because I wanted to
• 15:37
Speaker 9: you know, life gonna dream of getting drafted and playing
• 15:39
Speaker 9: in the NFL. So, you know, he drafted. But he
• 15:42
Speaker 9: when I got to Minnesota, he told me the story
• 15:45
Speaker 9: of how he even heard about me when Denny was
• 15:48
Speaker 9: you know, he he came up under Bill Walsh and
• 15:51
Speaker 9: he said about two years before that, when I was
• 15:54
Speaker 9: going to my junior year, he said, uh, Bill wall
• 15:58
Speaker 9: gave him a call and told him he needed to
• 16:01
Speaker 9: check out this kid in Florida by his name of
• 16:03
  Speaker 9: Donthe Coben.
• 16:03
  Speaker 7: Wow.
• 16:05
Speaker 9: Yeah, So he told me he had led me since
• 16:08
Speaker 9: then and then they traded up. I don't know if
• 16:10
Speaker 9: y'all remembered it, but they traded because they had like
• 16:12
Speaker 9: the twenty pigre late in the first round, but they
• 16:15
Speaker 9: traded up to the eleventh fig because Tampa, who I
• 16:18
Speaker 9: thought I was going to go through coach Guntry. I
• 16:20
Speaker 9: met with him about five times before the draft, and
• 16:23
Speaker 9: I thought it was a lot that I was going
• 16:24
Speaker 9: to go to Tampa. And Coach Green moved up as
• 16:28
Speaker 9: surprised everybody, and drafted me. And he didn't want me
• 16:31
Speaker 9: to go to Tampa because at the time we were
• 16:33
Speaker 9: in the same visitor. Now this is Danny Green telling
• 16:38
Speaker 9: me all this, you know, and I'm like, all right, coach,
• 16:40
Speaker 9: So he pulls me in there. He takes you to
• 16:42
Speaker 9: the draft board and he told me all the players
• 16:44
Speaker 9: that they had rated. And not only did he have
• 16:47
Speaker 9: me the number one quarterback in the draft that year,
• 16:50
Speaker 9: he had me raised the number one player in the draft.
• 16:52
Speaker 9: So he was like, he was really high on me,
• 16:54
Speaker 9: and he said he needed a quarterback they can get
• 16:56
Speaker 9: the ball out there to Randy and he thought that
• 16:59
Speaker 9: I fit the mold for So that's how I even
• 17:02
Speaker 9: got to Minnesota. And Coach Green will always be one
• 17:05
Speaker 9: of my guys, and I appreciate him drafting me.
• 17:08
Speaker 8: Yeah that and not only and I failed to mention
• 17:10
Speaker 8: not only Randy Moss was there, but Chris Carter was
• 17:12
Speaker 8: there too, so you had sort of that duality of
• 17:15
Speaker 8: those great receivers with two different skill sets and two
• 17:17
Speaker 8: different sets of experience. So that always helps out as
• 17:20
  Speaker 8: a quarterback.
• 17:22
Speaker 9: Oh man, it was big for me. Man it having
• 17:24
Speaker 9: two guys like that on the outside that that are
• 17:27
Speaker 9: going to make plays when they afford the opportunity to
• 17:29
Speaker 9: make the play. That's really what it's all about. And
• 17:32
Speaker 9: I just had to put the ball with it need
• 17:33
Speaker 9: to beat man and it. You know, sometimes it looks easy,
• 17:36
Speaker 9: but you know, we but we prepared very very well
• 17:39
Speaker 9: and and uh, you know we were able to put
• 17:41
Speaker 9: up some good numbers. Yeah.
• 17:43
Speaker 11: So so Dante, I have a question, and Hollis just
• 17:45
Speaker 11: kind of touched on this. Having receivers like Chris Carter
• 17:47
Speaker 11: and Randy Moss in your you know, in your field
• 17:49
Speaker 11: to throw to. What was it like trying to because
• 17:53
Speaker 11: you know, people view the quarterback as the leader of
• 17:55
Speaker 11: the team and you know, being in kind of in
• 17:58
Speaker 11: charge of the offense, what was your approach to leadership
• 18:02
Speaker 11: involving Chris and Randy, Like, what kind of a relationship
• 18:06
Speaker 11: did you have with those guys out on the field.
• 18:09
Speaker 10: Was it kind of a.
• 18:10
Speaker 11: Mutual thing or did you feel comfortable enough to tell
• 18:13
Speaker 11: them this is what we're going to do or was
• 18:14
  Speaker 11: it mutual?
• 18:15
Speaker 9: Yeah, I would tell you. My rookie year, I kind
• 18:21
Speaker 9: of was like a sponge around there because I didn't
• 18:23
Speaker 9: play my rookie year, so I got to watch Jeff
• 18:27
Speaker 9: George around the Cunningham and watch how they prepare, and
• 18:30
  Speaker 9: I didn't I you know, obviously they had a job
• 18:33
Speaker 9: to do as well, so I wasn't you know, I
• 18:35
Speaker 9: didn't want to be this kids just bothering them and
• 18:38
Speaker 9: picking their brain all the time. So I was kind
• 18:39
Speaker 9: of like a sponge just you know, even the meeting rooms,
• 18:42
Speaker 9: of course they would ask and just how they prepared themselves.
• 18:45
Speaker 9: And I learned a lot from those guys. But dealing
• 18:47
Speaker 9: with Randy and Chris that the season that coach after
• 18:51
Speaker 9: my rookie year, Coach Green calls me, I think in
• 18:54
Speaker 9: like March and tells me, hey, I'm going to announce
• 18:56
Speaker 9: that you're going to be outside quarterback. And I was like,
• 18:58
Speaker 9: all right, Coach, I'm ready. I felt like I was
• 19:01
Speaker 9: ready my rookie year. After after probably about two weeks
• 19:03
Speaker 9: of training camp, I thought I could have started. I
• 19:06
Speaker 9: thought I had a girl. I felt like that, but
• 19:08
Speaker 9: I had to wait. So so every every week during
• 19:12
Speaker 9: my rookie year, I was the scout team quarterback, and
• 19:14
Speaker 9: I treated practice like it was my game every day.
• 19:18
Speaker 9: And I'm gonna who really got me ready? John Randall Man,
• 19:21
Speaker 9: That dude, hey were he was painting faith in practice,
• 19:26
Speaker 9: you know what I'm saying. So practice for me was
• 19:28
Speaker 9: intense my rookie year. So Randy and Chris got to
• 19:33
Speaker 9: see my skills set every day going against our first defense.
• 19:37
Speaker 9: So I think I kind of won those guys over
• 19:40
Speaker 9: a little bit. But then that off season when I
• 19:42
Speaker 9: was name a starter, I came down to Chris's UH
• 19:45
Speaker 9: training facility down in Voca Raton, Florida, and I lived
• 19:48
Speaker 9: down there and trained with them every day. So they
• 19:50
Speaker 9: got to see how hard I worked. You know, I wasn't.
• 19:53
  Speaker 9: I didn't. I came in. I didn't. I'm the type
• 19:55
Speaker 9: of guy I didn't want nobody to give me nothing.
• 19:57
Speaker 9: I want to earn it. So I earned never respect
• 20:01
Speaker 9: and that it was a natural thing. And then and
• 20:03
Speaker 9: once we got back up there the training camp, you know,
• 20:06
Speaker 9: it was just I just stepped in and and and
• 20:08
Speaker 9: they were just they were just receivers on the team.
• 20:10
Speaker 9: To me, you know, at the times, like I had
• 20:12
Speaker 9: a job to do, and they know, they know, everything
• 20:15
Speaker 9: came to the quarterback, and you know, we we'd have
• 20:18
Speaker 9: our you know, a little spats here and there, but
• 20:20
Speaker 9: they know I would, you know, if I had Yeah,
• 20:26
Speaker 9: if we had to come, we had to come to blows.
• 20:29
Speaker 9: I was willing, you know what I'm saying. So we
• 20:33
Speaker 9: we Luckily we never had to do that. But they
• 20:35
Speaker 9: understood and they looked in my eyes and they knew
• 20:38
Speaker 9: what I was made of. So I never had any
• 20:40
Speaker 9: real problems with any one of those guys.
• 20:42
Speaker 8: What's interesting to me is like I had I had
• 20:47
Speaker 8: a year with Chris, and.
• 20:52
Speaker 2: Chris is a different breed. He he like like like
• 20:56
Speaker 2: for me, like we would go if going one on
• 21:00
Speaker 2: one and all that kind of stuff. Like he was.
• 21:03
Speaker 2: He was the kind of guy that.
• 21:04
Speaker 8: Could really get to you, get get you, like, get
• 21:07
Speaker 8: you upset, get you to the point where like you're like.
• 21:10
Speaker 2: Well, bro, let's just let's just throw blows.
• 21:14
Speaker 8: And so I'm wondering, how did you And again kind
• 21:19
Speaker 8: OF's the same somewhat of the same question. But Chris
• 21:22
Speaker 8: to me was a different guy. Like, what, like, how
• 21:25
Speaker 8: did you manage to pull him in to it being okay?
• 21:30
Speaker 8: Like when you didn't throw to him, you know, because
• 21:33
Speaker 8: I know he wanted every ball.
• 21:37
Speaker 9: Hey, can y'all hear me? Yeah we can hear Okay,
• 21:40
Speaker 9: I'm on the turn fight. That was breaking up a
• 21:42
Speaker 9: little bit. But yeah, Chris Man. Let me tell you,
• 21:44
Speaker 9: I love Chris Man. But Chris, you know, he had
• 21:47
Speaker 9: a lot of success, and you know, he he's the
• 21:50
Speaker 9: type of guy that you just gotta be stirring with him. Man. Yeah,
• 21:55
Speaker 9: that's what I did. And you know, in my rookie year,
• 22:00
Speaker 9: he got to realize that the Vikings. I was brought
• 22:02
Speaker 9: into a situation where the team was fifteen and one
• 22:05
Speaker 9: the year before in the offenses, and so a lot
• 22:09
Speaker 9: of people was like, why we draft a quarterback? We
• 22:12
Speaker 9: need somebody, we need to help on defense. You know.
• 22:14
Speaker 9: So I felt like, I really Chris was one of
• 22:17
Speaker 9: the guys I really had to show, all right, why
• 22:22
Speaker 9: I'm here and through it all. You know, I'm happy
• 22:28
Speaker 9: that we were able to give them the same pace.
• 22:30
Speaker 9: But at first, you know, Chris wasn't He wasn't somebody
• 22:33
Speaker 9: that I really liked particularly, and I know he really
• 22:37
Speaker 9: he felt like it was the end of his career
• 22:40
Speaker 9: and he didn't have time to groom a guy. So
• 22:43
Speaker 9: I knew I had to be ready, you know what
• 22:44
Speaker 9: I'm saying. But one thing for sure, it was going
• 22:49
Speaker 9: to be respectful, you feel me. So Chris knew. He
• 22:52
Speaker 9: knew the type of dude I was from working out
• 22:55
Speaker 9: with me, and a few times we in the heat
• 22:58
Speaker 9: of battle, you know, I have to remind him like, man,
• 23:02
Speaker 9: let's let's be respectful or now we can go we
• 23:07
Speaker 9: can go there if you want to. And he never
• 23:09
Speaker 9: really wanted to go there. So so that's how That's
• 23:12
Speaker 9: how it was, man. So he ended up being good.
• 23:14
Speaker 9: So we ended up being good.
• 23:15
Speaker 8: Yeah, And I think I think in most cases you
• 23:17
Speaker 8: always do kind of patch it up, but it is,
• 23:20
Speaker 8: it is super tense, and I don't know if people
• 23:22
Speaker 8: really realize whether it's quarter quarterback, receiver, offensive or defensive
• 23:29
Speaker 8: line secondary. Like you chatting, you know, there's guys that
• 23:33
Speaker 8: are chatting saying stuff like, hey, you guys got to
• 23:35
Speaker 8: get a sight. You know, we were back here trying
• 23:37
Speaker 8: to you know, and then some all of a sudden,
• 23:39
Speaker 8: one I'm gonna turn around and say something to you,
• 23:41
Speaker 8: and you kind of gotta be try to be like
• 23:43
Speaker 8: you bold. But but I know when I was there,
• 23:47
Speaker 8: there was nothing I could do with any of those
• 23:48
Speaker 8: none of those d linemen. But Johnny Randall is a
• 23:51
Speaker 8: special dude. He was a He was a special player.
• 23:54
Speaker 9: You know, we went at it.
• 23:56
  Speaker 8: Man.
• 23:56
Speaker 9: He his intensity every day. Yeah, got me, got my
• 24:00
Speaker 9: feet right, got me really at the speed of the game.
• 24:04
Speaker 9: I had to adjust a little bit from college and
• 24:07
Speaker 9: being there every day going against him definitely helped me
• 24:10
Speaker 9: and I and I appreciated him for that, you know,
• 24:12
Speaker 9: because he was he was a He was a high
• 24:14
Speaker 9: level competitor, and I was the same way, and I
• 24:17
Speaker 9: wanted to win no matter how how it happened. Throwing
• 24:20
Speaker 9: the run of it didn't matter.
• 24:22
  Speaker 2: Yeah, that's what's up.
• 24:23
Speaker 8: So you know, I'm gonna go I know we jumping
• 24:25
Speaker 8: all over the place here, but I'm gonna go a
• 24:27
Speaker 8: little off script. And now you you were synonymous with
• 24:31
Speaker 8: with your famous celebration.
• 24:34
Speaker 2: To get your role on celebration, you was not.
• 24:37
Speaker 8: Only did you you sort of popularized it outside of
• 24:40
Speaker 8: the hip hop community, but you were also in one
• 24:42
Speaker 8: of at the time, one of my favorite groups videos,
• 24:45
Speaker 8: the Big Timer. So you know, you know, being a
• 24:48
Speaker 8: kid from central Florida and kind of going through everything
• 24:51
Speaker 8: you went to and just having that level of a
• 24:54
  Speaker 8: fun and celebrity.
• 24:56
Speaker 2: How was that experience for you?
• 24:58
Speaker 9: It was great. Man. Know Slim, Slim Williams and Baby Williams.
• 25:03
Speaker 9: You know I met I met Slim. They're the owners
• 25:07
Speaker 9: of Owners of Cash Money Records. And I met Slim
• 25:10
Speaker 9: when they first were coming on the scene because one
• 25:13
Speaker 9: of one of my wife's cousins played for the Saints
• 25:17
Speaker 9: and his his girlfriend at the time was a girl
• 25:20
Speaker 9: from New Orleans. So they when they broke up her
• 25:24
Speaker 9: that that girl became she was friends with Slim, and
• 25:30
Speaker 9: some kind of way he found out that, uh that
• 25:34
Speaker 9: I was friends with well my girlfriend and her with friends.
• 25:37
Speaker 9: So he invited me to that one of their first
• 25:39
Speaker 9: shows when it came to Florida. So I ended up
• 25:42
Speaker 9: going to the show in Miami and we hit off
• 25:44
Speaker 9: and we became good friends. And you know, they had
• 25:47
Speaker 9: a song and it because gets the roll on. So
• 25:49
Speaker 9: one day I was leaving and he calls me. He's like, hey,
• 25:53
Speaker 9: Pep man, when you call touchdown, may see you get
• 25:56
Speaker 9: the rollover. That's and that's how I have it. Man,
• 26:01
Speaker 9: and I just I did after every touchdown. It was
• 26:03
Speaker 9: my celebration. Man. It was fun though. But those du
• 26:06
Speaker 9: you know, awesome. Man. I had a great time, you know,
• 26:08
Speaker 9: hanging out with them.
• 26:09
  Speaker 2: That's what Hey.
• 26:11
Speaker 11: So Dante's speaking of youth and reliving your days back
• 26:14
Speaker 11: when you were rookie quarterback. Thinking about the current NFL
• 26:19
Speaker 11: with with so many young quarterbacks starting. You've got, you know,
• 26:22
Speaker 11: names like c. J. Stroud, Bryce Young, Jayden Daniels. What
• 26:26
Speaker 11: are your thoughts on the current crop of young quarterbacks
• 26:29
Speaker 11: in the league. How do you how do you feel
• 26:31
  Speaker 11: about their play?
• 26:33
  Speaker 9: I love it. I love it. You know, it's a
• 26:35
  Speaker 9: different it's a different game, obviously, it's a more it's
• 26:38
Speaker 9: an offensive game, and it's great. It's very exciting. I love,
• 26:44
Speaker 9: you know, the run pass option that they do, the
• 26:46
Speaker 9: R pos. I love that, you know, kind of wish
• 26:49
Speaker 9: we'd had a little bit of that when I was playing. Yes,
• 26:52
Speaker 9: you know, and I think, you know the quarterback you know,
• 26:58
Speaker 9: coming up when I was young. You you're getting labeled
• 27:01
Speaker 9: as a running quarterback, right.
• 27:03
  Speaker 2: Yeah.
• 27:04
  Speaker 9: It's a negative thing. But I love you know, I
• 27:09
Speaker 9: love Jayson, I love Jalen Hurst, I love you know,
• 27:13
Speaker 9: I mean I think Lamar Jackson is absolutely fantastic, and
• 27:17
Speaker 9: my homes is Off obviously a great player. It's a
• 27:19
Speaker 9: lot of great players. I love my man up in
• 27:23
Speaker 9: the Buffalo. He's definitely something who's somebody. I love that
• 27:28
Speaker 9: I watched him play man. I mean, it's just the
• 27:32
Speaker 9: quarterback play is phenomenal. Guys are very accurate and then
• 27:36
Speaker 9: they get to showcase the athleticism and move to change
• 27:39
Speaker 9: in different ways. I think that's exciting and uh, I
• 27:43
Speaker 9: love to watch them.
• 27:44
Speaker 8: And I think just to touch on that, you know,
• 27:46
Speaker 8: being a quarterback, you know, coming up in the in
• 27:48
Speaker 8: the nineties, it was sort of that distinction either you
• 27:51
Speaker 8: was a running quarterback or you was a passing quarterback.
• 27:55
Speaker 8: Even though we had guys like Steve Young and John Elways,
• 27:58
Speaker 8: it was still like you were still category is either
• 28:00
Speaker 8: one or the other. So as your game of all,
• 28:03
Speaker 8: particularly because I know you did a lot of running college,
• 28:05
Speaker 8: but you also did your first.
• 28:06
Speaker 2: Running in the in the NFL.
• 28:08
Speaker 8: Was that something you were like conscious of or you
• 28:11
Speaker 8: were just you were just out there playing ball.
• 28:14
Speaker 9: I'm playing ball. I was. I was definitely constantly mean
• 28:17
Speaker 9: because you know, my coach always say, man, get down,
• 28:19
Speaker 9: get down, you know, but I you know, I was
• 28:22
Speaker 9: squadding five fifty and you know, I was running up
• 28:25
  Speaker 9: for five man, and I went, I wasn't. I felt
• 28:28
Speaker 9: like I was going. I felt like I was either
• 28:30
Speaker 9: going to make a guy in there or punishing. Yeah,
• 28:33
Speaker 9: that was my mentality, you know what I'm saying. So
• 28:35
Speaker 9: you know, I my main goal was to move the
• 28:38
Speaker 9: change if I wanted to put up in position to
• 28:41
Speaker 9: get points, whether it's running or throwing. You know, I
• 28:44
Speaker 9: never said, you know, I don't want to run on
• 28:47
Speaker 9: this play, because the defense a lot of times dictated,
• 28:50
Speaker 9: you know, how you got to most the change sometimes.
• 28:52
Speaker 9: So I just wanted to be like a Swiss Army
• 28:55
Speaker 9: Knight to be able to, you know, be two different
• 28:58
Speaker 9: ways with maybe come you.
• 29:02
Speaker 8: Had you had thirty four rushing touchdowns and and as
• 29:07
Speaker 8: negative as a running quarterback title could be. Brother, that's
• 29:12
Speaker 8: that's that's an amazing that's an amazing number for a quarterback.
• 29:17
Speaker 9: Yeah, oh yeah, thank you y'all put them. I didn't.
• 29:21
Speaker 9: It didn't matter to me. It only mattered that we
• 29:24
Speaker 9: got the points. You know, I remember that year, the
• 29:26
Speaker 9: year I had ten touchdowns in one year, right, So
• 29:29
Speaker 9: but I could have had twenty because Moe Williams had
• 29:32
Speaker 9: ten touchdowns also from the had about eight or nine
• 29:35
Speaker 9: from the one yard line. I could have quarterback sticked
• 29:38
Speaker 9: all of him. But he you know, he's always tell me, man,
• 29:40
Speaker 9: let me get the touchdowns. So I know, so I'll
• 29:44
Speaker 9: tell her. I said, you better get on first to
• 29:45
Speaker 9: seke it down because the third time.
• 29:50
Speaker 3: And you had and you had it.
• 29:53
Speaker 9: It was a good thing, man. And I just always
• 29:55
  Speaker 9: wanted to get the points that didn't. I wasn't. I
• 29:58
Speaker 9: didn't care about who got it to be, but I
• 30:00
Speaker 9: just wanted to make sure we put us in some
• 30:02
Speaker 9: positions to try to win games.
• 30:04
Speaker 8: Right as one hundred and eighty five pound cornerback, Bro,
• 30:08
Speaker 8: you had two thousand and six hundred and fifty two
• 30:11
  Speaker 8: rushing yards.
• 30:13
Speaker 2: Bro, you can't come over there by.
• 30:15
Speaker 8: Me like you like you got to go the other
• 30:17
Speaker 8: way or something, because I'm gonna have miss that.
• 30:21
  Speaker 9: Bro.
• 30:21
  Speaker 2: That's that's a that's a ton of yards.
• 30:23
Speaker 9: Man. Yeah, man, I hate, I gotta tell you I'm
• 30:26
Speaker 9: signing to I was trying to put it in a
• 30:28
Speaker 9: position to get points and win, man. That's all it
• 30:30
Speaker 9: was about. It wasn't. I never was a stat chaser.
• 30:33
Speaker 9: Like that. I didn't care if I threw for three
• 30:36
Speaker 9: hundred or three for one hundred. I don't care if
• 30:38
Speaker 9: I've ran for twenty or for one hundred. Didn't matter
• 30:40
Speaker 9: to me. I only cared about the point in the
• 30:43
Speaker 9: win loss call. That's really that mattered.
• 30:46
Speaker 8: Yeah, And I just had one more question to that
• 30:48
Speaker 8: as far, because you said something earlier about not necessarily
• 30:52
Speaker 8: having a consistent offensive coordinator at least in your time
• 30:56
Speaker 8: in the NFL, and I want you to just to
• 30:58
Speaker 8: articulate to people how difficult that can be because at
• 31:02
Speaker 8: the point that you can like master office, you get
• 31:04
Speaker 8: to know you are you and the OC are on
• 31:07
Speaker 8: the same page. Then you leave, you got to start
• 31:09
Speaker 8: all over. I know Jayalen Hurts and a lot of
• 31:11
Speaker 8: the young guys are going through that now. So how
• 31:14
  Speaker 8: difficult is that?
• 31:15
Speaker 9: Just as a professional, it is very imperative importance for
• 31:22
Speaker 9: the office coordinator and the quarterback to be on the
• 31:24
Speaker 9: same page. Is I can't even put in the work
• 31:26
  Speaker 9: how important it is because it's it's it's like it's
• 31:31
Speaker 9: like night day. If you don't if you're not on
• 31:33
Speaker 9: the same page, if you don't know why the office
• 31:35
Speaker 9: of Coordinator is calling up certain play in a certain situation.
• 31:39
Speaker 9: Your your thought process isn't right. And I mean from
• 31:43
  Speaker 9: I had good I'm not saying I didn't have any
• 31:45
Speaker 9: other Girlmin's coordinators, but we I don't think we were
• 31:48
Speaker 9: in sync like I was with Scott Lanahan, you know,
• 31:52
Speaker 9: and and it just was clicking, man. And I noticed
• 31:56
Speaker 9: that when I when he left, it was it was
• 31:59
Speaker 9: like I was sometimes I feel I was out there alone,
• 32:02
  Speaker 9: you know, And that's a that's a tough thing when
• 32:04
Speaker 9: you're out there quarterback. You don't if you don't have
• 32:06
Speaker 9: your eyes up there, you know, being able to tell
• 32:09
Speaker 9: you because obviously if most quarterbacks are not all quarterbacks
• 32:13
Speaker 9: have the ability to change the play at any time anyway.
• 32:16
Speaker 9: But if you want to, you want to know why
• 32:18
Speaker 9: he's calling what he's calling. And it's a rhythm thing too,
• 32:21
Speaker 9: you know, the rhythm thing, and you know, you pay quarterback.
• 32:25
Speaker 9: And if you can't get in the rhythm, which office coordinator,
• 32:28
Speaker 9: it could be some day it could be a lot
• 32:29
Speaker 9: of three and outs. And that's the worst thing ever
• 32:31
Speaker 9: to give a three outs.
• 32:33
Speaker 8: And I think people don't really like they can't conceptualize
• 32:36
Speaker 8: that they they I think they made for people who
• 32:38
Speaker 8: never didn't play the position. They're just looking on field
• 32:41
Speaker 8: and how that manifests. But to have that all firs
• 32:44
Speaker 8: of coordinator, because I mean, if you're really clicking, then
• 32:47
Speaker 8: y'all can even finish each other sentences.
• 32:50
  Speaker 2: Y'all.
• 32:50
Speaker 8: It's almost like you can look at him, he can
• 32:52
Speaker 8: look at you and you notice set. You know, to
• 32:54
Speaker 8: play like it ain't even got to be articulated, and
• 32:57
Speaker 8: people don't understand, like if you don't have that, or
• 33:00
Speaker 8: if you're in conflict or you're thinking one way and
• 33:02
Speaker 8: he's thinking another, then it just messes up the timing
• 33:05
Speaker 8: and rhythm of not only just the office, but it
• 33:08
Speaker 8: can do damage to the whole team as well.
• 33:11
Speaker 9: Definitely, definitely, man, it's very important to just as the
• 33:14
Speaker 9: OC or who's not. It ain't got to be who's
• 33:17
Speaker 9: ever calling the play. Yeah, you know, OC, don't call
• 33:20
Speaker 9: the play the head coach officer, but you've got to
• 33:22
Speaker 9: be in sync with that that person as a quarterback.
• 33:25
Speaker 9: And in my career, the success the years I was
• 33:28
Speaker 9: very successful, it was when I kind of knew why
• 33:32
Speaker 9: he was calling something, when he was calling it and
• 33:34
Speaker 9: what we were trying to accomplish.
• 33:36
Speaker 11: Yeah, So Dante I'm going to go on a different
• 33:40
  Speaker 11: path here.
• 33:40
Speaker 10: It's kind of an opinion question.
• 33:42
Speaker 11: So I want to I want to talk about a
• 33:44
Speaker 11: person that I know, Carl admires a lot.
• 33:47
Speaker 10: That's Aaron Rodgers coming off.
• 33:51
Speaker 2: So Dante's backdropp This is she's a Packer fan. Okay,
• 33:55
Speaker 2: Well you don't have to tell him that.
• 33:57
Speaker 11: Yeah, so so so Dante. He's you know, he's coming
• 34:04
Speaker 11: off a major injury. He's entering his twenty first season,
• 34:08
Speaker 11: and he's signed with the Steelers. You've experienced a major
• 34:13
Speaker 11: injury like that and tried to continue your career with
• 34:16
Speaker 11: the Dolphins, Raiders and Lions after the Vikings, correct after
• 34:20
Speaker 11: you had your knee injury. So what do you think
• 34:24
Speaker 11: fans should expect from Aaron Rodgers in Steeler Country? Do
• 34:27
Speaker 11: you think he'll be successful in twenty twenty five or
• 34:30
Speaker 11: do you feel like he should just have already ridden
• 34:32
Speaker 11: off hto the sunset?
• 34:33
Speaker 10: What are your opinions on him?
• 34:35
Speaker 9: I'm going to tell you, with his skill set, if
• 34:38
Speaker 9: they can keep him off the ground, and with the
• 34:41
Speaker 9: receivers they have, and I mean, he's a very accurate quarterback.
• 34:47
Speaker 9: He's obviously he knows the game. Had it out. It's
• 34:52
Speaker 9: an interesting thing. I think he gets I mean, they
• 34:55
Speaker 9: come down to and they protected and not get him
• 34:58
Speaker 9: in because of you know, you know, you get him
• 34:59
Speaker 9: here a few times. You know, you know, he's not
• 35:02
Speaker 9: he's not a young guy anymore. So that's that's you know,
• 35:06
Speaker 9: it might take him longer the hell and there's different
• 35:09
Speaker 9: factors than that, so they could protect him and keep
• 35:11
Speaker 9: him off the ground. I think they can definitely have
• 35:14
Speaker 9: a lot of success because his armors definitely has a pop,
• 35:17
Speaker 9: a lot of pop left in and he's a very
• 35:19
Speaker 9: very accurate quarterback, and he's pritpo and he knows the game.
• 35:23
Speaker 9: So with those things, if he if he they gotta say,
• 35:27
Speaker 9: if they healthy, they can definitely have a lot of
• 35:29
Speaker 9: success with that team.
• 35:31
Speaker 8: And see and and to that point, like I you know,
• 35:34
Speaker 8: I played, you know with Tommy Kramer, you know, and
• 35:37
Speaker 8: he toward the end of his career, and then I
• 35:40
Speaker 8: was able to play in Minnesota for long enough to
• 35:44
Speaker 8: see other players, other quarterbacks who were getting towards the
• 35:47
Speaker 8: end of their career.
• 35:50
Speaker 2: It's interesting to me when you start talking about.
• 35:54
Speaker 8: Because because because Tommy, Tommy didn't have to do a
• 35:57
Speaker 8: whole lot of anything like he just knew the position
• 36:01
Speaker 8: like he he just knew what he was gonna need
• 36:05
  Speaker 8: to do.
• 36:06
Speaker 2: He could just get.
• 36:06
Speaker 8: Out there and and he could just see it and
• 36:11
Speaker 8: and and people talk a lot about the game slowing down, yep.
• 36:17
Speaker 8: So when the game slowed down for you, was it
• 36:21
Speaker 8: a situation to where you were like, Okay, I can
• 36:24
Speaker 8: I'm seeing all this, I can make this check, I
• 36:27
Speaker 8: can make all these changes in the cause of what
• 36:29
Speaker 8: I could. I could pretty much do what I want
• 36:31
Speaker 8: because you could see and you understood the game as
• 36:35
Speaker 8: a whole, and it was just like you were looking
• 36:38
Speaker 8: at it and seeing it.
• 36:38
Speaker 2: Oh, he's getting ready to go do this. It's cover three,
• 36:41
  Speaker 2: it's cover four.
• 36:42
Speaker 8: You know you could you tell me a little bit
• 36:44
Speaker 8: about when you got to that place and how comfortable
• 36:47
Speaker 8: it made you feel.
• 36:49
Speaker 9: I'm gonna tell you, man, it's an amazing thing to be.
• 36:52
Speaker 9: I call it the zone. When you're in the zune.
• 36:55
Speaker 9: Like you know, my first year, three touchdowns that year,
• 36:59
Speaker 9: But I went in the zone. You know, I was
• 37:00
Speaker 9: out there, I was playing, I was having success. And
• 37:03
Speaker 9: then and you know, my next few years it was
• 37:07
Speaker 9: kind of up and down. But then you know, three, well,
• 37:11
Speaker 9: coach manand came on two, and we about halfway through
• 37:14
Speaker 9: that year week got on the same page. And then
• 37:16
Speaker 9: three I was I was kind of it was slowing down,
• 37:19
Speaker 9: but if what I hadn't got totally there. But oh four,
• 37:22
  Speaker 9: I'm telling you, man, I felt like I don't know
• 37:25
Speaker 9: if y'all ever watched the Marvel moves and Spider Man
• 37:28
Speaker 9: when everything when everything slow down, and he knew me
• 37:31
Speaker 9: so fast that everything is really slow to him. That's
• 37:34
Speaker 9: how I felt that. I felt like I was a superhero.
• 37:38
Speaker 9: I really felt like everything was slow to me, and
• 37:41
Speaker 9: it was like I could see it before it happened.
• 37:44
Speaker 9: And and I I like to call that when you're
• 37:46
Speaker 9: in the zone and it's like you can't be stopping
• 37:49
Speaker 9: and that that is an amazing thing to be in
• 37:51
Speaker 9: the zone and you're you know, athletes know know what
• 37:53
Speaker 9: that is, man. And when you're in the zone, man,
• 37:55
Speaker 9: it's like no matter what you do, you you you're
• 37:58
Speaker 9: a step ahead of everything else. You know, it is
• 38:01
Speaker 9: an amazing feeling. And it is a fantastic feeling. You know.
• 38:05
Speaker 9: That's the best way I can describe it. Being in
• 38:07
Speaker 9: the zone. You know, it is like you're just to
• 38:10
Speaker 9: everybody else, You're moving faster, you're doing this great and
• 38:12
Speaker 9: these awesome things, but to you, it's like everything is slow, right,
• 38:17
  Speaker 9: It's just amazing.
• 38:18
Speaker 8: And that's and that's crazy because you had the Spider
• 38:21
Speaker 8: Man reference and being a quarterback and being on the zone,
• 38:24
Speaker 8: that ball feel like it's on the string. You really
• 38:26
Speaker 8: feel like you just you can really pit it anywhere
• 38:28
Speaker 8: you want to pit it. Everybody else is just moving
• 38:31
Speaker 8: like they're just walking, and you just at full speed
• 38:34
  Speaker 8: all the time.
• 38:34
Speaker 2: So that's definitely an amazing feeling.
• 38:38
  Speaker 9: You know.
• 38:39
Speaker 8: And I you know, I think I think to have
• 38:42
Speaker 8: some success, at at least at the professional level, I
• 38:47
Speaker 8: think everybody has to have a time or a place
• 38:50
Speaker 8: where they're in that zone. Because if you don't, I
• 38:54
Speaker 8: don't know how you make it, you know what I'm saying,
• 38:56
Speaker 8: Because like you, you got to go against this guy
• 38:59
Speaker 8: that guy all the time, and at some point you
• 39:02
Speaker 8: got to get to a point where you were saying, oh,
• 39:05
Speaker 8: it don't matter, I can just I can just do
• 39:08
Speaker 8: this because I can remember just in you know, playing
• 39:11
Speaker 8: corner in eighty seven. It was like it was it
• 39:16
Speaker 8: was easy for me to you know, cover this guy,
• 39:20
Speaker 8: cover that guy, and I won't throw names out because
• 39:21
Speaker 8: people will be like, oh, he ain't never cover that guy.
• 39:24
Speaker 8: But it just got it did It just got comfortable
• 39:29
Speaker 8: and you, like you said, you're in that zone man,
• 39:32
  Speaker 8: and it's and it's great.
• 39:35
Speaker 9: Yeah, it's a it's an amazing feeling. And you said
• 39:38
Speaker 9: it right, man. You just it's no matter what they
• 39:41
Speaker 9: try to do, you a step ahead or teach me
• 39:44
  Speaker 9: like it's a it's tough, you know. And I've been
• 39:48
Speaker 9: on the other end of that when people no matter
• 39:50
Speaker 9: what what you try to do, it doesn't work. You know. Yeah,
• 39:54
Speaker 9: the word day. But man, being in the zone is
• 39:56
Speaker 9: a great feeling, man. And and I would to everybody
• 40:00
Speaker 9: who's an athlete to feel that feeling because it's an
• 40:03
  Speaker 9: awesome feeling.
• 40:05
Speaker 11: So Dante, what what are you currently doing now that
• 40:08
Speaker 11: your football crew is ever what? What what is your
• 40:11
Speaker 11: focus now as far as your hobbies your business kind
• 40:14
  Speaker 11: of aspects.
• 40:15
Speaker 9: Well, I lived out in uh South Florida and Fort
• 40:19
Speaker 9: l my wife and I for a while. We were
• 40:23
Speaker 9: at a trucking business and we got out of that
• 40:26
Speaker 9: and now we're just building our real estate portfolio, you know,
• 40:30
Speaker 9: just to you know, we have some properties at our
• 40:32
Speaker 9: hometown and we're just building and and and just trying
• 40:36
Speaker 9: to you know, make that as successful as possible. But
• 40:40
Speaker 9: other than that, we we had six kids, and my
• 40:43
Speaker 9: kids are in the house still. He's fourteen and he's
• 40:49
Speaker 9: playing a little quarterback now. And yeah, he says he
• 40:54
Speaker 9: wants it, but I told him, you know, he's one
• 40:57
Speaker 9: thing to say it. But you gotta you gotta, you
• 40:58
Speaker 9: gotta be an everyday thing. You got to be for
• 41:00
Speaker 9: who you are, you know, you know, do you sit
• 41:03
Speaker 9: ups every day? So stuff like that. I'm on them.
• 41:05
Speaker 9: And my other two boys are in college. They play
• 41:07
Speaker 9: college basketball. They're actually in the transfer port now and
• 41:10
Speaker 9: they're looking for up a place to play. So hopefully
• 41:14
Speaker 9: they have a team. You know, they signed somewhere soon.
• 41:17
Speaker 9: So you know, that's that's what. My brothers are thirty
• 41:21
Speaker 9: and twenty eight, and we have three grandkids, three baby girls. Yeah,
• 41:28
Speaker 9: so you know that, you know, been my my my
• 41:31
Speaker 9: girls in high school and we have a beautiful family.
• 41:34
Speaker 9: And that's that's what. I'm just a dad now, you know,
• 41:39
  Speaker 9: I drop off.
• 41:40
  Speaker 10: Superdad pick up.
• 41:44
Speaker 2: I got a GRANDSONID so I know how that works, man.
• 41:48
Speaker 9: Yeah. Yeah, Unfortunately, you know, my my baby girl was
• 41:52
Speaker 9: killed in a car accident in twenty twenty and she
• 41:56
Speaker 9: was ten years old. Yeah, yeah, I've every day man,
• 41:59
Speaker 9: so you know, you know, you know, life, life happens,
• 42:03
Speaker 9: you know, and you keep pushing forward. And but I'm
• 42:06
Speaker 9: I'm happy, and uh, I appreciate you know, I was
• 42:09
Speaker 9: lucky to to start dating my wife when I did.
• 42:13
  Speaker 9: I got a good girl.
• 42:14
  Speaker 8: Man.
• 42:14
Speaker 9: She's uh, she's been there every step of the way
• 42:16
Speaker 9: with men, and uh she's been a definitely a huge
• 42:21
Speaker 9: support of me. And uh and and how you know
• 42:24
Speaker 9: we get to you know, continue to grow and and
• 42:27
Speaker 9: be grandparents and and uh, you know, it's just enjoying life,
• 42:30
Speaker 9: you know, That's what it's about.
• 42:33
Speaker 8: Well, bro, like I said, I I'm gonna go back
• 42:36
Speaker 8: to the opening and and just let you know. And
• 42:40
Speaker 8: you you again, you just impressed me every single time
• 42:44
Speaker 8: I got a chance to have you be.
• 42:47
Speaker 2: I'm around you, listen to you.
• 42:49
Speaker 8: You You're a genuine brother to me that I think
• 42:53
Speaker 8: that your success, you're all the greatness that comes with you.
• 42:59
  Speaker 8: I don't I don't even know if you even care
• 43:02
Speaker 8: about that at this point, because it doesn't come off.
• 43:05
Speaker 8: Did you just come off as a genuine person that
• 43:09
Speaker 8: just that just will sit and talk with.
• 43:11
Speaker 2: Anybody no matter what.
• 43:12
Speaker 8: And I and and like I said, for your for
• 43:15
Speaker 8: you to be Dante Calpepper, nobody's thinking that, Like, hey,
• 43:19
Speaker 8: I can sit there and talk with him and he'll
• 43:22
Speaker 8: talk back to me. And I saw it. I saw
• 43:25
Speaker 8: it firsthand, man, So I'm super impressed. And I appreciate
• 43:28
Speaker 8: you coming on the show. And uh we'll let you
• 43:32
Speaker 8: go now, and uh, thank you, man, and get your
• 43:34
  Speaker 8: role on.
• 43:37
Speaker 9: Hey, David, thank you all for what Man. I gotta say.
• 43:40
Speaker 9: I'm equally impressed with you, card Man. I appreciate your
• 43:42
Speaker 9: big brother and uh, man, just keep in touch with me, man,
• 43:46
Speaker 9: and hopefully we can play some golf. Tom.
• 43:48
Speaker 8: I gotta get my golf game. I gotta get my
• 43:50
Speaker 8: golf game up New York. I seen you on Instagram
• 43:53
Speaker 8: and he was looked like he was hitting about three hundred.
• 43:57
Speaker 2: I've seen that one.
• 43:59
Speaker 9: I'm right hit a three hundred, but it won't go straight.
• 44:01
Speaker 9: It'll go straight, so he can get some lessons.
• 44:07
Speaker 8: I'm searching for lessons, man, I'm searching for the lessons
• 44:10
Speaker 8: before I get back out there because I and I
• 44:13
  Speaker 8: can't say I played pretty decent before, but I hadn't
• 44:16
Speaker 8: played for for like two three years and and bro,
• 44:20

• 46:05
Speaker 7: back into the conversation.
• 46:07
Speaker 2: All right, ladies and gentlemen.
• 46:08
Speaker 8: I hope you enjoyed that part of the show, and
• 46:11
Speaker 8: I think we got a little bit more time, I think,
• 46:13
  Speaker 8: and Holliston's got a he's got he's got something he's
• 46:15
Speaker 8: got to get off his chill.
• 46:16
  Speaker 2: Yeah.
• 46:17
Speaker 8: So first of all, I just think Dante Copever, he
• 46:19
Speaker 8: was just so genuine answered all the questions, just gave
• 46:23
Speaker 8: us great detailed insight on you know, his life and everything.
• 46:26
Speaker 2: So that was awesome.
• 46:27
Speaker 8: But just you know, now we're entering to NBA free agency.
• 46:31
Speaker 8: You know, there's been a lot of talk about the
• 46:33
Speaker 8: collective bargaining agreements and different things of that nature, and
• 46:37
  Speaker 8: Kevin Durant.
• 46:37
Speaker 2: Want to move again.
• 46:38
Speaker 8: So now we have Lebron he originally signed, but I
• 46:42
Speaker 8: still think he has the option to opt out or
• 46:44
Speaker 8: he has some options. So I think he was He's
• 46:48
Speaker 8: possibly do about fifty four million dollars, but I don't
• 46:51
Speaker 8: I think he can still move if he if he
• 46:53
Speaker 8: wanted to. So I mean, just what are your general thoughts.
• 46:56
Speaker 8: You know, he's played twenty plus years, he got his
• 46:58
Speaker 8: son in the league. Is it like he's won four championships,
• 47:01
Speaker 8: won every championship? Why where he went? Is it time
• 47:04
Speaker 8: to go or would you think he'd be damaging his
• 47:07
Speaker 8: legacy by possibly going to a different team.
• 47:10
  Speaker 2: I think yes, I think.
• 47:11
Speaker 8: If he goes to another team, I don't think he
• 47:14
Speaker 8: can play. He's not getting better. Okay, let's let's just
• 47:18
Speaker 8: make this clear. He he's not gonna get that. Age
• 47:22
Speaker 8: is not going to allow you.
• 47:23
Speaker 2: To get any better.
• 47:25
Speaker 8: Okay, And so I'm not a Lebron fan anyway, So
• 47:30
Speaker 8: so so I could be I could be a little
• 47:32
Speaker 8: prejudice in here, but.
• 47:34
  Speaker 4: I don't.
• 47:35
  Speaker 2: I don't really. I don't think he is.
• 47:38
Speaker 8: He is doing anything necessarily for the NBA. I don't
• 47:44
Speaker 8: think you know what I'm saying, Like, everybody knows Lebron,
• 47:46
Speaker 8: everybody knows who he is. Everybody knows he's played on
• 47:49
Speaker 8: fifty five teams. So what I mean, what is there
• 47:54
Speaker 8: what is there to be left to do?
• 47:56
Speaker 2: Yeah? What is there left for him really to do?
• 47:58
Speaker 11: Yeah, I'm you know, I'm gonna go back to what
• 48:01
Speaker 11: Hollis said about it, would it possibly damage his legacy?
• 48:05
Speaker 10: I think we're beyond that with him. So yeah, I
• 48:07
Speaker 10: think he could. I think he he can do.
• 48:10
Speaker 11: I think it's up to Lebron to decide. Of course
• 48:13
Speaker 11: he is, he calls the plays, the shots for his career.
• 48:16
Speaker 11: But I think it's up to him what he wants
• 48:18
Speaker 11: to do and how to how to bow out gracefully
• 48:20
Speaker 11: on his career. And I don't think it's going to
• 48:22
Speaker 11: hurt his legacy in the least amount of yeah, amount
• 48:26
Speaker 11: of anyway. But you know who's undefeated, father Tom, and
• 48:29
Speaker 11: we know that's catching up with him. So you know,
• 48:31
Speaker 11: I think that he would be better off probably bowing
• 48:35
Speaker 11: out sooner than later. But I don't think anything's going
• 48:38
Speaker 11: to diminish his accomplishments in the NBA.
• 48:41
Speaker 8: Yeah, I would say, you know, I'm a Laker fan,
• 48:43
Speaker 8: and most certainly obviously him being on the roster taking
• 48:47
Speaker 8: up that much cap space. I don't know if it's
• 48:50
Speaker 8: not going to help us build. But I think for
• 48:52
Speaker 8: his maybe own personal legacy, I don't think you want
• 48:55
Speaker 8: to go out and you don't make the playoffs.
• 48:56
Speaker 2: I think last year they didn't. We didn't make the playoffs.
• 48:59
Speaker 8: So I think maybe in his mind, like at least
• 49:02
Speaker 8: even if we don't win a championship, I at least
• 49:04
Speaker 8: want to go out on a playoff team. I don't
• 49:06
Speaker 8: want to go out not making the playoffs. But let
• 49:08
Speaker 8: me I know we ain't got much time. But let
• 49:10
Speaker 8: me ask you another question. Tom Thibodeau, former head coach
• 49:13
Speaker 8: of the New York Knicks. He gets them almost to
• 49:16
Speaker 8: the Dance Eastern Conference championship and they let him go right,
• 49:21
Speaker 8: What do you guys think about that sort of move?
• 49:23
Speaker 8: When you when you, and then again in for context,
• 49:26
Speaker 8: this is the first time they had been there in
• 49:28
Speaker 8: like twenty maybe thirty years, This first time they've been
• 49:32
Speaker 8: relevant in a very long time. I'm gonna say this, Okay,
• 49:37
Speaker 8: somebody in the system, whether it's a player, whether it's
• 49:42
Speaker 8: somebody somebody in the structure, does not like him. Yeah,
• 49:49
  Speaker 8: you think it's I think it's personal. I mean, but
• 49:51
Speaker 8: he's known to be a grinder. He's known to like
• 49:54
Speaker 8: he's playing his he hey guys, and they're gonna grind
• 49:58
Speaker 8: out each and every night. You knowing to be a
• 50:00
Speaker 8: hard like he plays coach is hard. I'm a star player,
• 50:05
  Speaker 8: I'm your I'm your main player. I don't and I
• 50:07
Speaker 8: don't necessarily know who that is. I'm not I'm not
• 50:10
Speaker 8: pointing a finger. I'm just saying, but I'm going seeing
• 50:13
Speaker 8: management and saying, look, this dude's pushing, he's yelling and screaming.
• 50:16
Speaker 8: He's doing all this kind of stuff that I that
• 50:19
  Speaker 8: I don't like and the team don't like. And I
• 50:21
Speaker 8: think the reason we didn't get all the way was
• 50:23
  Speaker 8: because of him.
• 50:24
Speaker 11: Do you really think there's a player on that team
• 50:26
Speaker 11: that has that kind of leverage.
• 50:27
Speaker 2: He said player or I said player or management.
• 50:30
Speaker 8: Somewhere somebody is not liking who he is as a
• 50:33
Speaker 8: person and how he's coaching.
• 50:36
Speaker 2: Because he showed your results. He showed you, he showed
• 50:40
  Speaker 2: the result.
• 50:41
  Speaker 10: That's what I mean.
• 50:42
Speaker 11: Yeah, and in the NBA, but it is ruthless. I mean,
• 50:45
Speaker 11: unless you get to the to the level of the championship,
• 50:49
Speaker 11: the NBA Championship game, you're it's not good enough, at
• 50:53
Speaker 11: least for the fans. I mean, you said there's a
• 50:55
Speaker 11: Lakers fan, and you were pretty much, but you.
• 50:58
  Speaker 2: Don't fire.
• 50:59
Speaker 8: But but what I'm saying is like being a Laker fan,
• 51:01
Speaker 8: we've we've had championships this century. Yeah right, if you're
• 51:05
Speaker 8: a nick fan, you have been nowhere since like Patrick Ewing,
• 51:09
Speaker 8: since like the Spree, well maybe Allen Houston teams, Like
• 51:12
Speaker 8: this is the first time you've been to this level.
• 51:16
Speaker 2: This guy, well, well Mike Brown got hired.
• 51:18
Speaker 8: He again, he but with Mike Brown, he's won championships
• 51:21
Speaker 8: as a head coach, one championships as an assistant. But
• 51:24
Speaker 8: he's also been fired four times as the head coach.
• 51:27
  Speaker 10: So it's like, I'm just a carousel, don't you.
• 51:30
  Speaker 2: Yeah, I just don't.
• 51:30
Speaker 8: But but if again, if you're coaching you had that
• 51:33
Speaker 8: level of success, it's just hard for me to justify
• 51:37
Speaker 8: why you were fired other than to your point, it's
• 51:39
Speaker 8: just being purely personal.
• 51:41
Speaker 11: Yeah, it's did you have that kind of leverage in
• 51:43
Speaker 11: the NFL car fired?
• 51:46
Speaker 12: No, that was I was on the end result of that.
• 51:50
Speaker 12: I mean because and again, even players, you can get
• 51:54
Speaker 12: cut for the like when I got cut from the
• 51:57
Speaker 12: Vikings and went to the Saints. The whole reason that
• 52:01
Speaker 12: I got cut was because me and the dB, the
• 52:03
Speaker 12: new dB coach, Danny Green's buddy.
• 52:06
Speaker 2: Was the dB coach, and he.
• 52:08
Speaker 8: Ain't know nothing about He didn't know nothing about dB
• 52:11
Speaker 8: play like, he knew nothing. And we're in the meetings laughing,
• 52:15
Speaker 8: and you know, and me and him and had conversation
• 52:19
Speaker 8: and he said to me, you don't know how to backpedal.
• 52:22
Speaker 8: You or he he said, you back pedal too high.
• 52:25
  Speaker 8: Now you're a scout becoming a dB coach. I've been
• 52:30
Speaker 8: playing my entire career. I'm in year eleven, right, and
• 52:34
Speaker 8: you're telling me I don't know how to back credit.
• 52:37
Speaker 2: How do I not laugh?
• 52:38
  Speaker 8: So that's why I'm sure, that's the reason why I
• 52:42
Speaker 8: got cut because I just couldn't respect him and I
• 52:45
Speaker 8: didn't show him respect because we just didn't get along.
• 52:50
Speaker 8: And I'll even go a step further. All within two years,
• 52:55
Speaker 8: our whole entire secondary got cut.
• 52:59
Speaker 10: And it was because of the new Yeah, the new
• 53:02
  Speaker 10: dB coach.
• 53:03
Speaker 8: Yeah yes, and Denny Green brought it. I mean, that
• 53:06
Speaker 8: could be an example of just kind of what's going on.
• 53:08
  Speaker 8: It's just like I said, it's just it's just amazing,
• 53:11
Speaker 8: like in this support environment, when you have success and
• 53:13
Speaker 8: then you just like you just let go the next year.
• 53:16
  Speaker 2: It's just I don't know, it's it's.
• 53:18
Speaker 8: It's money and you and you gotta you gotta be
• 53:22
Speaker 8: what that person wants.
• 53:23
Speaker 2: You to be. And sometimes that sometimes that's tough.
• 53:27
Speaker 11: Yeah, but then that person should be held responsible if
• 53:30
Speaker 11: they if they fire you know what I mean, Like
• 53:32
Speaker 11: they fire a coach that that is is not he
• 53:35
Speaker 11: hasn't reached the pinnacle, but he's pushing them closer. And
• 53:38
Speaker 11: then you fire this guy and you bring somebody else
• 53:40
Speaker 11: in that takes the steps backward. Somebody needs to be
• 53:43
Speaker 11: held accountable for that. Don't you think I.
• 53:45
  Speaker 2: Would think so?
• 53:46
Speaker 8: But but but it depends on who that person is
• 53:49
Speaker 8: and what his connections is.
• 53:50
Speaker 10: It's true too, Jerry, James and Dallas.
• 53:54
Speaker 2: I he owns it.
• 53:56
Speaker 8: So yeahs all right, Well, ladies and gentlemen, we're gonna
• 54:01
