- 0:42Speaker 1: go ahead, show your support and buy some merch from
- 0:45Speaker 1: Cardinal Territory Cardinal Territory shop dot com. My man, Jeff
- 0:51Speaker 1: soup On seventeen year MLB veteran, two stints with the Cardinals,
- 0:57Speaker 1: two thousand and six World Series champ NLCS MVP, five
- 1:03Speaker 1: straight seasons with at least two hundred innings pitch. You
- 1:08Speaker 1: don't see that anymore, six seasons for his career, and
- 1:15Speaker 1: by giving the resume, I feel it's now an appropriate
- 1:18Speaker 1: time to say, Hi.
- 1:19Speaker 2: Jeff.
- 1:21Speaker 3: Kat, how are you? Great to see you. That's a
- 1:25Speaker 3: great intro.
- 1:27Speaker 1: Do you deserve it? You did a lot of great
- 1:29Speaker 1: things in Major League baseball. But right now you're en root,
- 1:33Speaker 1: So let's talk about Jeff soupon the Civilian. Your daughter,
- 1:39Speaker 1: Findley is an outstanding pitcher in softball. I think you're
- 1:43Speaker 1: going to one of her tournaments. So tell me what
- 1:46Speaker 1: you're up to now, because Cardinal fans want to know
- 1:50Speaker 1: what's up with Soup.
- 1:53Speaker 3: Well, I'll tell you what's Uh.
- 1:55Speaker 4: Yesterday we had a game at West Hill's Pony Baseball.
- 1:59Speaker 4: We were down so nothing in the sixth inning and
- 2:03Speaker 4: in the seventh I'm sorry, down seven to nothing and
- 2:07Speaker 4: seven we came back and won that game down seven nothing.
- 2:11Speaker 3: It was awesome.
- 2:12Speaker 4: So now we're getting ready to travel up to San
- 2:16Speaker 4: Louis Obispo area and I'm gonna watch my daughter play.
- 2:22Speaker 3: So it's what am I up to?
- 2:24Speaker 4: I mean, basically, my kids lives fill my time and
- 2:27Speaker 4: it's awesome and uh, and then my wife Dana.
- 2:30Speaker 3: Tells me what to do the rest of the time.
- 2:32Speaker 4: So I'm just trying to you know, just trying to
- 2:35Speaker 4: stay in the top five percent of husbands out there.
- 2:39Speaker 2: I think you're doing it, say to day in formant,
- 2:43Speaker 2: I just won.
- 2:43Speaker 1: Well, some guys, former athletes, former professional athletes that have kids,
- 2:50Speaker 1: they passed down solid.
- 2:52Speaker 2: Jean Pool, So kudos to you on that.
- 2:55Speaker 1: But how do you handle being at your kids games
- 2:58Speaker 1: when you have this wealth of information and have done
- 3:02Speaker 1: it at the highest level?
- 3:04Speaker 2: Are you a yeller?
- 3:06Speaker 3: Do you hid?
- 3:06Speaker 1: Like Matt Holliday would go to his kids games when
- 3:09Speaker 1: his kids were in high school or younger youth baseball
- 3:12Speaker 1: and put a hoodie on and pull the string so
- 3:16Speaker 1: everything so you didn't know was him. How do you
- 3:18Speaker 1: handle being Jeff soup pump at your kids' games?
- 3:24Speaker 4: Well, I mean, basically, I just am myself, right, So
- 3:27Speaker 4: I'm very friendly.
- 3:28Speaker 3: I try to show people that.
- 3:33Speaker 4: We're all nervous, Okay, So when you're a parent of
- 3:36Speaker 4: a pitcher, of course you're nervous. It doesn't matter if
- 3:39Speaker 4: you you know you got three hundred wins in the
- 3:41Speaker 4: big leagues or you don't. So we have instances all
- 3:46Speaker 4: the time where somebody you know will talk about game changer.
- 3:50Speaker 3: You know, because I sit right behind home plate.
- 3:52Speaker 4: I chart fin these games like I'm the next starter,
- 3:57Speaker 4: the next day starter. I use the same chart that
- 4:00Speaker 4: I did for Forever and Brodie's games. I'm on the field,
- 4:04Speaker 4: so it's a little different, but you know, it's funny
- 4:07Speaker 4: because parents they think you know everything, and I try
- 4:12Speaker 4: to let them believe that, but I mean, you know,
- 4:15Speaker 4: as a player, we don't. I mean, we're we we
- 4:17Speaker 4: learned it on our own, our parents helped us.
- 4:20Speaker 3: That's all we're trying to do for our kids.
- 4:22Speaker 4: I mean, I'm not going there and it's a show,
- 4:24Speaker 4: like I'm not sitting there with my Cardinals World Series
- 4:27Speaker 4: ring and I'm like, hey, you know, you're just a
- 4:30Speaker 4: parent and you're and you're super nervous. I mean, I
- 4:32Speaker 4: I literally I do not know how my family did
- 4:36Speaker 4: it for twenty years watching me pitch. Okay, uh, there
- 4:40Speaker 4: are so many games like I can't even eat when
- 4:43Speaker 4: she pitches, Like when she'll play high level like you're playing.
- 4:46Speaker 4: She played the number number one softball team in the
- 4:50Speaker 4: in the country, and I'm like, oh.
- 4:52Speaker 3: My gosh, why is she pitching now.
- 4:54Speaker 4: I know how my my parents felt when I was
- 4:58Speaker 4: thrown against the NLC.
- 5:02Speaker 3: Against the match.
- 5:03Speaker 4: You're just you have no control as a parent, so
- 5:08Speaker 4: a lot of easier if you're mad. I don't know
- 5:10Speaker 4: if his kids pitched, but it's a lot easier when
- 5:12Speaker 4: they're a position player.
- 5:13Speaker 1: I'm just saying, first off game Changer is one of
- 5:17Speaker 1: the greatest inventions ever. I can't tell you how many
- 5:20Speaker 1: times my kid's pitching. He's a pitcher, and I'm on
- 5:24Speaker 1: the road, not this year, but I'm at a game,
- 5:27Speaker 1: what you know, doing little hits on Cardinals, and I
- 5:30Speaker 1: almost give my kids score because I'm watching it on
- 5:32Speaker 1: the game Changer. But here's the thing. I'm with you, right, No,
- 5:36Speaker 1: it's true, like I almost say Ford to Nope, that's
- 5:38Speaker 1: my kid's game. My kid pitches, he did not inherit
- 5:44Speaker 1: great athletic jeans like your kids did. But I get
- 5:49Speaker 1: more nervous. Like here I am interviewing world famous celebrities
- 5:52Speaker 1: like Jeff Suphat.
- 5:53Speaker 2: I don't care. I'm not nervous. But when my.
- 5:55Speaker 1: Kid pitches, and the only advice I ever say is
- 6:00Speaker 1: take your breath, keep pounding the zone.
- 6:03Speaker 2: Otherwise he'll give me a dirty look. So he's okay
- 6:05Speaker 2: when they go, take your breath, keep pounding the zone.
- 6:09Speaker 2: That's it.
- 6:10Speaker 1: Well, otherwise for the other kids, I'll always say, here
- 6:12Speaker 1: we go, Billy, let's go scooter, whatever it is. But
- 6:17Speaker 1: being a parent, while you're kipitching it will it will
- 6:19Speaker 1: take it at me. But it does bring me to another,
- 6:22Speaker 1: meaning I told you, yeah, go ahead.
- 6:25Speaker 4: Well I'm saying, like your advice, that's good advice, whether
- 6:28Speaker 4: you know you played or forever or not. I mean,
- 6:30Speaker 4: breathing is the number one thing. Like for years, I
- 6:33Speaker 4: would sit there and I look at Finley or Brodie
- 6:36Speaker 4: and I'd do it to every single picture I have.
- 6:38Speaker 3: Now it's like, take your breath. Yeah, you know, take
- 6:45Speaker 3: you have to you have to breathe.
- 6:47Speaker 4: And I thought this homeless guy was coming over here,
- 6:50Speaker 4: but we're okay.
- 6:52Speaker 2: I hope he does because it'll be a good video.
- 6:56Speaker 3: He's a good interview. But no, that's great advice and
- 7:00Speaker 3: it doesn't matter. You know.
- 7:01Speaker 4: It's like every kid learns on their own and you
- 7:03Speaker 4: have to learn when you fail.
- 7:05Speaker 3: I mean that's just the way it is.
- 7:09Speaker 2: So here's the other thing.
- 7:10Speaker 1: So I told you before we started, I had a
- 7:12Speaker 1: lot of things I wanted to talk to you about.
- 7:14Speaker 1: But I don't know what order because it is going
- 7:16Speaker 1: to go all over the place. But I do think,
- 7:19Speaker 1: first off, anyone that has kids, they probably play sports,
- 7:22Speaker 1: and I think there's something to learn from here in
- 7:24Speaker 1: other people's experience. But this ties into your professional career.
- 7:30Speaker 1: We don't see pitchers logging two hundred innings anymore, certainly
- 7:35Speaker 1: not five straight seasons.
- 7:38Speaker 2: So you were a guy who.
- 7:40Speaker 1: Threw control movement over velocity. Right, you didn't have a
- 7:45Speaker 1: ninety nine mile in that hour fastball. What do you
- 7:47Speaker 1: think the key for the fact that for the most
- 7:49Speaker 1: part in your career you were healthy and you always
- 7:53Speaker 1: logged a lot of innings, which is such an important
- 7:57Speaker 1: thing to have from your starting rotation.
- 8:01Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 8:01Speaker 4: So, I mean I think it was just bread in us.
- 8:06Speaker 4: I was not you know, I was touted as the
- 8:09Speaker 4: next Roger Clemmons, you know, like you know when they
- 8:12Speaker 4: the scouts put things on you. But I just never
- 8:14Speaker 4: got to the velocity. I mean I topped out when
- 8:17Speaker 4: I was throwing out of the bullpen ninety five and
- 8:21Speaker 4: then as a starter, I never could pitch that way.
- 8:24Speaker 4: And my you know, different pitching coaches through the years
- 8:27Speaker 4: would say, hey, Soup, can you throw harder?
- 8:30Speaker 3: And I said, yeah, but.
- 8:31Speaker 4: I I can't command it when I throw harder. I mean,
- 8:36Speaker 4: I just I missed too much. So and it became
- 8:40Speaker 4: a mentality, and you know, I came up. You know,
- 8:42Speaker 4: depending on what team you come up is really how
- 8:45Speaker 4: you learn. You know, if you're coming up with the
- 8:48Speaker 4: with the Cardinals in the in the two thousands and
- 8:53Speaker 4: and uh, you know you're expecting a lot of wins
- 8:56Speaker 4: really strong teams. You're coming up with another team in
- 8:59Speaker 4: the two thousands and really it may change the.
- 9:02Speaker 3: Way you view pitching.
- 9:04Speaker 4: Right, So, regardless whether you're getting wins or not, you know,
- 9:09Speaker 4: innings was the foundation and number of starts. So my
- 9:12Speaker 4: personal goal was always to throw to win fifteen, to
- 9:18Speaker 4: throw two hundred, and to make at least thirty starts
- 9:21Speaker 4: a year. That was Those were some of my goals.
- 9:25Speaker 4: Now how do you get to those goals? It's like, okay,
- 9:27Speaker 4: well I can't control the wins, okay, but I can control.
- 9:31Speaker 3: The quality starts.
- 9:32Speaker 4: So I took fifteen wins and I changed it to
- 9:35Speaker 4: quality starts, and I said, I want to have eighteen
- 9:37Speaker 4: to twenty quality starts if I can't. And the mentality
- 9:42Speaker 4: of just being able to grind through innings to work.
- 9:48Speaker 3: When you don't have your best stuff.
- 9:50Speaker 4: I mean, the bottom line is everyone's great when they
- 9:53Speaker 4: have their best stuff, but how do you pitch when
- 9:55Speaker 4: you don't?
- 9:57Speaker 3: And that's how you throw two hundred innings?
- 10:00Speaker 4: And to be honest with you, when I came over
- 10:02Speaker 4: to Saint Louis, I had I had five years in
- 10:07Speaker 4: a row, and I wasn't winning many games. So for me,
- 10:11Speaker 4: like throwing two hundred innings was like, I have to
- 10:15Speaker 4: at least get to two hundred innings if I'm gonna
- 10:18Speaker 4: win ten, you know games.
- 10:20Speaker 3: And you know, I.
- 10:21Speaker 4: Come to Saint Louis that first year and I think
- 10:23Speaker 4: I won sixteen and I was mad because I didn't
- 10:27Speaker 4: throw two hundred innings.
- 10:28Speaker 3: Tony kept taking me out of the game. I was
- 10:30Speaker 3: getting mad, but I didn't say anything because wins are
- 10:33Speaker 3: really great.
- 10:36Speaker 4: And would you believe when it came time for the playoffs,
- 10:40Speaker 4: like I felt amazing, I mean really, And I threw
- 10:46Speaker 4: twenty innings that.
- 10:47Speaker 3: Year in that postseason and felt fine.
- 10:50Speaker 4: So I realized, like previously, like I was probably grinding
- 10:53Speaker 4: myself down a little bit too much. I was durable,
- 10:57Speaker 4: and I was you know, I could throw the two hundred,
- 10:59Speaker 4: but I wasn't.
- 11:00Speaker 3: Or two hundred and fifty inn.
- 11:01Speaker 4: Guy, But but who knows, Maybe I could have been
- 11:05Speaker 4: if I would have trained that way.
- 11:06Speaker 3: But I think now they just don't train that way.
- 11:09Speaker 3: I mean, it doesn't, it doesn't. I don't know. I
- 11:14Speaker 3: mean it just that it looks like they don't really
- 11:16Speaker 3: want that.
- 11:18Speaker 1: So is it between starts and kind I hear some
- 11:21Speaker 1: of the old timers, and you're still a young man,
- 11:23Speaker 1: so don't take offense. But they talk about long tossing
- 11:27Speaker 1: being a lost thing, that long tossing between starts keeps
- 11:32Speaker 1: your arm healthy, strong and active.
- 11:35Speaker 2: Do you do you buy into that?
- 11:38Speaker 3: So?
- 11:38Speaker 4: I was never an overlong toss guy, like a Jaeger
- 11:41Speaker 4: type guy throwing three hundreds, you know, feet or whatever.
- 11:44Speaker 3: But I threw. I threw one to one fifty every day.
- 11:48Speaker 3: I threw the same way every day, right. I didn't like.
- 11:52Speaker 4: I didn't say, oh my arm feels a little soft today.
- 11:55Speaker 4: I maybe shortened the minutes, but I really played the
- 11:59Speaker 4: cat play catch the same way every day, and I
- 12:02Speaker 4: was really trying to go for a consistency. I don't
- 12:05Speaker 4: know what they do now. I have no idea if
- 12:08Speaker 4: they throw long toss or not. Are you saying they don't.
- 12:11Speaker 1: I'm saying it's not as big a part of the
- 12:14Speaker 1: between star routines for a lot of pictures as I
- 12:18Speaker 1: hear from the old timers, as it is as it
- 12:21Speaker 1: used to be, that they've gotten away from that as
- 12:24Speaker 1: like the main staple.
- 12:26Speaker 2: Now some guys might do it, I don't, you know.
- 12:28Speaker 2: I don't judge everyone else.
- 12:29Speaker 1: I don't even know sometimes what they do between starts,
- 12:32Speaker 1: but I'm told that that's one of the big differences.
- 12:36Speaker 1: So you weren't in Saint Louis like two stints, which
- 12:40Speaker 1: is kind of cool. I remember you, by the way,
- 12:42Speaker 1: when you were in Kansas City. You don't even remember me,
- 12:44Speaker 1: but I was there for like a couple of months
- 12:48Speaker 1: while you were there, and then I got moved to
- 12:50Speaker 1: Saint Louis with Fox, and it was like night and day.
- 12:54Speaker 1: Kansas City clubhouse was down. Your manager once called me
- 12:59Speaker 1: into his office to rip everyone on the team, and
- 13:01Speaker 1: I barely knew him. And then we both get to
- 13:05Speaker 1: Saint Louis and it's like, because when he does that,
- 13:09Speaker 1: it was a whole different feel. Everything was brighter, everything
- 13:13Speaker 1: was more fun, everything was more enjoyable. But in two
- 13:16Speaker 1: thousand and six, I was going back and because I
- 13:19Speaker 1: remember some of it, but your rotation was you had
- 13:23Speaker 1: the bulk of the starts Carpenter and Marquis and then
- 13:26Speaker 1: other guys kind of piecemeal. What well you think of
- 13:29Speaker 1: two thousand and six when you want it all. By
- 13:31Speaker 1: the way, kudos on the on the NLCS MVP, But
- 13:35Speaker 1: what do you remember about that season most And there's
- 13:37Speaker 1: a handsome fellow right there in that year pitching.
- 13:42Speaker 3: Think of that, young Buck. I still look the same almost.
- 13:46Speaker 2: You've aged beautifully.
- 13:48Speaker 3: I think I've done all right, you know what I mean?
- 13:50Speaker 2: And makes one of us.
- 13:52Speaker 3: Yeah, I think you look fantastic.
- 13:55Speaker 2: Thank you, thank you.
- 13:58Speaker 3: I think that.
- 13:59Speaker 4: You know, it's funny like Sidney Ponson, who I remember
- 14:02Speaker 4: pitching against when I was in when I was with
- 14:05Speaker 4: the Red Sox, I didn't realize he was on our team.
- 14:09Speaker 4: I don't know how long he was there, and you're right,
- 14:11Speaker 4: it was like and then Weaver came over and Moulder yeah,
- 14:19Speaker 4: but Mulder got hurt pretty yeah, oh yeah he started Yeah,
- 14:23Speaker 4: is we were Weaver came over because Mulder yeah yeah, okay,
- 14:27Speaker 4: and then you know that Anthony reyis and I think, honestly,
- 14:35Speaker 4: it was it was just a really a belief that
- 14:39Speaker 4: you know, we had grinded the entire year, barely made
- 14:43Speaker 4: it in. I mean, and we had nothing to lose,
- 14:47Speaker 4: you know what I'm saying, Like there was nothing to lose,
- 14:49Speaker 4: so let's just go out and play, and I think
- 14:51Speaker 4: it made it stronger as a pitching staff and as
- 14:55Speaker 4: a team. And I mean, you know Detroit, I mean
- 15:00Speaker 4: they kind of you know, they kind of helped us
- 15:02Speaker 4: a little bit, like getting through getting through the the
- 15:08Speaker 4: the Mets was just like that was awesome.
- 15:12Speaker 3: One of the greatest series.
- 15:14Speaker 4: I mean, and then and we also had the Astros
- 15:17Speaker 4: and know for another great series, and those the series
- 15:20Speaker 4: that you have to work.
- 15:22Speaker 3: That's where it's awesome.
- 15:23Speaker 4: And that's where, like last year, that World Series, that
- 15:26Speaker 4: was probably the funnest I mean, I don't That's probably
- 15:28Speaker 4: the only time I watched baseball, and I just it's
- 15:35Speaker 4: just when you when it goes.
- 15:36Speaker 3: Back and forth and anyone can win it. I love it.
- 15:41Speaker 1: We're gonna take a break here and then when we
- 15:43Speaker 1: come back, we're gonna talk more about six and some
- 15:47Speaker 1: other stuff about Jeff soup Pump. Our guest is the
- 15:52Speaker 1: guy they call soup And you're watching Cardinal Territory on
- 15:56Speaker 1: the foul.

- 17:33Speaker 3: I am yes? Is that next year? This year?
- 17:35Speaker 2: I think it's this year in July?
- 17:38Speaker 3: Yeah? Yeah, okay, yeah, yeah, oh six yeah yeah right.
- 17:41Speaker 2: Yeah, the years twenty years.
- 17:45Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 17:46Speaker 1: So one of the things that I always think about,
- 17:49Speaker 1: because people don't know this about Jeff Soupon, is that
- 17:54Speaker 1: you hit four eighty as a senior in high school
- 17:57Speaker 1: a first basement that could d Somebody used Google. Somebody
- 18:03Speaker 1: used Google.
- 18:03Speaker 3: To eleven home runs fifty five RBIs.
- 18:08Speaker 1: With two homers in the big leagues, one of them
- 18:11Speaker 1: and the nlcs off the same guy, Tracchual. I think,
- 18:14Speaker 1: what do you remember about your home run because that
- 18:17Speaker 1: the kids call it a big flex?
- 18:19Speaker 2: That was a big flex.
- 18:22Speaker 4: Yeah, the I didn't use those terminologies, you know, but
- 18:25Speaker 4: I was like, okay, so I told I shared this
- 18:28Speaker 4: story a few times. But when I came over, I
- 18:32Speaker 4: hit a few times. Pittsburgh, Arizona, and you know, in
- 18:37Speaker 4: Pittsburgh I only hit for four months, but I hit.
- 18:39Speaker 3: Like three hundred. It was unbelievable.
- 18:41Speaker 4: I mean I was basically hit it against the fence
- 18:44Speaker 4: and it's at least a single.
- 18:45Speaker 3: That's how slow I was. And when I went to
- 18:49Speaker 3: Saint Louis, everyone hit and I was in an.
- 18:53Speaker 4: Zero for forty four. It was unbelievable. And Dave McKay
- 18:57Speaker 4: told me, he goes, hey, listen, soup. How many pitchers
- 19:00Speaker 4: can say they went oh for the season?
- 19:03Speaker 3: I said, I said, I said.
- 19:05Speaker 4: You're one hundred percent right. I'm gonna stop trying to
- 19:08Speaker 4: hit the ball, right, And Tony gave me two slash
- 19:13Speaker 4: bunts and I end up getting a hit. That's that's
- 19:17Speaker 4: an uh four. So when Larry comes over, he makes
- 19:22Speaker 4: a comment in the paper. Everyone's getting like standing ovations
- 19:26Speaker 4: just for normal home runs, not like game winners or
- 19:29Speaker 4: like curtain calls for I mean, just just a third
- 19:33Speaker 4: inning home run, you're getting a curtain call, right, So
- 19:35Speaker 4: I am trying to hit a home run. So I
- 19:38Speaker 4: just got to get one home run, and it was
- 19:41Speaker 4: Steve Traxel. And this is the craziest thing about this story.
- 19:47Speaker 4: My buddy who was His name is Brian Hopkins, and
- 19:52Speaker 4: you should check out his music.
- 19:53Speaker 3: Okay, great dude.
- 19:55Speaker 4: He trained every off season with me because he was
- 19:59Speaker 4: a musician, and so he was the only one who
- 20:01Speaker 4: was available in the morning, so we played catch and
- 20:05Speaker 4: so when I went to Saint Louis, I used his
- 20:07Speaker 4: song It's All for You as my walk up song.
- 20:13Speaker 4: So he came with the camp corder my camp corner
- 20:16Speaker 4: to film it his song being played.
- 20:19Speaker 3: In the stadium, and I hit a home run, so
- 20:22Speaker 3: I actually have a home footage video from the stands
- 20:26Speaker 3: of myself hitting the home run. Now what I remember.
- 20:29Speaker 3: I remember hitting it.
- 20:31Speaker 4: I remember putting my head down and trying to run
- 20:33Speaker 4: as fast as I could.
- 20:34Speaker 3: I remember like I didn't know if it was gone.
- 20:37Speaker 3: I couldn't even see the ball.
- 20:38Speaker 4: So I remember the umpire I looked at him and
- 20:40Speaker 4: he was circling, and then I never I basically stepped
- 20:44Speaker 4: on home plate and took a deep breath because I
- 20:46Speaker 4: was holding my breath the whole time, and then I
- 20:49Speaker 4: got a curtain call.
- 20:52Speaker 2: Yes you did.
- 20:54Speaker 1: Give me a Tony larusa story. You know, I just
- 20:57Speaker 1: saw him this year and he's still doing his thing.
- 21:02Speaker 1: He's still every bit Tony.
- 21:03Speaker 2: How you doing.
- 21:04Speaker 1: I'll let you know at ten o'clock, I'd like to
- 21:06Speaker 1: manage against you. Blah blah blah, you know, all the stinging.
- 21:09Speaker 1: Give me a Tony Larus' story.
- 21:14Speaker 4: Okay, So basically, he he was probably the most consistent manager.
- 21:22Speaker 3: I thought he was. I love playing for him. And
- 21:26Speaker 3: he just had some funny quirks like we all do.
- 21:29Speaker 4: Right. So there was one time I'm I'm I'm on
- 21:35Speaker 4: the bench and I'm just observing and I'm sitting there.
- 21:40Speaker 4: I'm like, why does he have his hands behind his back?
- 21:43Speaker 4: And he has like numbers, like he has numbers behind
- 21:46Speaker 4: his back, right.
- 21:48Speaker 3: And I asked somebody, I'm like, what is going on?
- 21:52Speaker 3: And he goes, oh, I don't know. I think he's
- 21:54Speaker 3: trying to like change the count, you know, like like
- 21:58Speaker 3: superstition wise. And I'm like, oh, really okay.
- 22:03Speaker 4: And then and then I'm I'm sitting there and this
- 22:07Speaker 4: is the And then the next day it's like, I see.
- 22:09Speaker 3: Woody would Woody williams Uh. Tony used to come out
- 22:13Speaker 3: and clean up all the cups, and I used to say,
- 22:16Speaker 3: sweepers out, and so.
- 22:17Speaker 4: He would come in and he would clean all the
- 22:19Speaker 4: cups up, and then then Woody would walk by and
- 22:22Speaker 4: like potunicky trips and then all the cups fall over
- 22:26Speaker 4: the floor and you could see Tony was just like,
- 22:30Speaker 4: so I'm like, I'm seeing this totally intense manager, right,
- 22:35Speaker 4: And so one day, you know, we used to have
- 22:37Speaker 4: an expression which was miss the anthem.
- 22:40Speaker 3: Missed the game, like you had you had to be
- 22:43Speaker 3: out there for the national anthem.
- 22:45Speaker 4: So I am like running behind, right, and so I'm sprinting.
- 22:49Speaker 4: The national anthem is getting ready to start, and.
- 22:51Speaker 3: Tony used to have all these celebrities and and you know,
- 22:55Speaker 3: actors and musicians and I and I'm like thinking, he
- 23:00Speaker 3: is like the most intense baseball guy.
- 23:03Speaker 4: And he's sitting there talking to meat Loaf for like
- 23:06Speaker 4: twenty minutes, and I'm like and I'm sprinting by.
- 23:09Speaker 3: Like I hope I'm not gonna be in trouble.
- 23:12Speaker 4: And Tony's sitting there and he's just talking to meat
- 23:14Speaker 4: Loaf and then he comes out after the national anthem.
- 23:17Speaker 3: So it's like you never know what you get, you
- 23:19Speaker 3: know what I mean. But he was consistent and he
- 23:23Speaker 3: would just he was just Tony man.
- 23:25Speaker 4: He had some great one liners, like when he yelled
- 23:27Speaker 4: at Prenzy and he said, that's why I have the
- 23:31Speaker 4: big office and you have a locker when Prinzy changed
- 23:35Speaker 4: the stretch time.
- 23:36Speaker 3: It was one of the greatest lines I've ever heard
- 23:38Speaker 3: that I've used it.
- 23:41Speaker 1: He was great employ He had celebrity friends. I met
- 23:45Speaker 1: a lot of people thanks to Tony LaRussa.
- 23:48Speaker 3: A lot of me too, me too. It was great.
- 23:51Speaker 2: Who was the best guy that you met?
- 23:53Speaker 1: Like, there was the guy from Rush, there was the
- 23:57Speaker 1: author of both.
- 23:58Speaker 4: Legal Okay, this is this was This was always my
- 24:03Speaker 4: one liner to these people.
- 24:06Speaker 3: I said, oh, yeah, where do you live?
- 24:09Speaker 4: Because ninety of them lived in la and I did too,
- 24:13Speaker 4: and so they would say, oh I live in La'm like,
- 24:15Speaker 4: oh so do I.
- 24:16Speaker 3: I go, I live in the valley. Where do you live?
- 24:18Speaker 3: They're like, I live in the valley too. I'm like,
- 24:20Speaker 3: oh my gosh. You know. So I would try to, like,
- 24:23Speaker 3: you know, but it never worked out.
- 24:25Speaker 4: I mean, you know those people are they're so busy,
- 24:28Speaker 4: and I'm like, we're busy, and I'm like it didn't
- 24:30Speaker 4: work out. But like Larry Walker was a huge Rush fan,
- 24:35Speaker 4: and he was, you know, with Geddy and all those guys.
- 24:38Speaker 3: But those guys love music, Eddie Vedder. Yeah, I mean
- 24:43Speaker 3: just they just love baseball. I mean, you know.
- 24:46Speaker 4: And so I don't know who else I met, but
- 24:49Speaker 4: I know I met some people that I never would
- 24:51Speaker 4: have met if it wasn't for Tony LaRussa.
- 24:54Speaker 1: Now I have one thing I want to ask you about.
- 24:59Speaker 2: Le Bra was s I believe that was twenty ten.
- 25:02Speaker 1: I bring it up because there was I think that's
- 25:05Speaker 1: you holding on to someone. But at some point you
- 25:08Speaker 1: did end up under the pile, and you did miraculously
- 25:12Speaker 1: escape that pile. And now I don't know if you
- 25:14Speaker 1: have any sort of lingering psychological things you're dealing with
- 25:19Speaker 1: from being part of that, but if you can, if
- 25:22Speaker 1: you can take us through that, because it was a fight.
- 25:27Speaker 1: Somehow you were under a pile and then I saw
- 25:29Speaker 1: you scurrying out.
- 25:30Speaker 2: So tell me about that.
- 25:32Speaker 3: I got a story about it. Are you ready? Yep? Okay,
- 25:37Speaker 3: buckle up? All right? So basically that day I get
- 25:42Speaker 3: put on the dl okay and so I'm basically released
- 25:52Speaker 3: and I come over there.
- 25:53Speaker 4: I'm trying to get it get it right again. And
- 25:55Speaker 4: so I get put on the DL and then Phillips
- 25:58Speaker 4: makes comments in the paper and you know, even though
- 26:01Speaker 4: I've been on the team, you know, but I've been
- 26:03Speaker 4: gone for a couple of years, it's a little different group.
- 26:07Speaker 4: And so the whole thing happens, and you know, Yatt,
- 26:12Speaker 4: he says what he says, and then boom, we come
- 26:14Speaker 4: out right.
- 26:15Speaker 3: So I'm sitting there and.
- 26:17Speaker 4: I'm like, okay, I'm on the d L and if
- 26:20Speaker 4: we make the playoffs, I gotta make sure Carp is
- 26:22Speaker 4: not gonna get hurt right here, because Carp was like
- 26:26Speaker 4: totally chirping. I was like, bro, come on, now, let's
- 26:30Speaker 4: let let the others, you know, handle this, And so
- 26:32Speaker 4: he starts.
- 26:33Speaker 3: To yell at Dusty and then rolling like it.
- 26:38Speaker 4: Was like he turns like you're yelling at my manager,
- 26:42Speaker 4: and they start walking toward each other, and that picture
- 26:46Speaker 4: is like me like hey, row row.
- 26:48Speaker 3: Row, hey, hey, you know, like say, what are you
- 26:52Speaker 3: guys doing? Like, and they got and I was I
- 26:56Speaker 3: was there.
- 26:56Speaker 4: I don't know who's in front of me, but when
- 26:58Speaker 4: I was there, I knew they weren't gonna throw punches,
- 27:02Speaker 4: but they were like it was it was like two
- 27:04Speaker 4: heavyweights coming together and they were out of breath.
- 27:08Speaker 3: It was the funniest thing. I'm like, wait, wait, you
- 27:10Speaker 3: guys are out of breath. They didn't even do anything yet.
- 27:12Speaker 4: They were holding onto each other's shirts and and so
- 27:16Speaker 4: you know, but uh uh Scotty was protecting his manager,
- 27:21Speaker 4: like you know, like nobody's gonna yell at my manager
- 27:24Speaker 4: and uh and then Karp is protecting you know, YACHTI
- 27:28Speaker 4: you know.
- 27:29Speaker 3: And so what happens at this point is I don't
- 27:32Speaker 3: know when when.
- 27:34Speaker 4: We got when all the when everybody gets together, somehow
- 27:40Speaker 4: we I get pushed.
- 27:41Speaker 3: We all get pushed.
- 27:42Speaker 4: I thought we all did, but maybe it was just me.
- 27:44Speaker 4: I was slammed to the ground by push. I'm sorry,
- 27:48Speaker 4: not slam pushed to the ground.
- 27:50Speaker 3: And so.
- 27:52Speaker 4: You know, when you're in a brawl, like the last
- 27:54Speaker 4: place you want to be is on the ground with
- 27:56Speaker 4: everyone wearing spikes, right, So I.
- 27:59Speaker 3: Am immediately flipped over and I crawled out. And then
- 28:05Speaker 3: it was funny like my father in law was like, man,
- 28:07Speaker 3: what are you doing? Crawled out like one's just staying there.
- 28:11Speaker 4: I'm like, you know, and I told him that story,
- 28:14Speaker 4: and then I realized I I.
- 28:16Speaker 3: Crawled out through all of the cardoes. I didn't even know.
- 28:19Speaker 4: I didn't know who's what team is where, you know,
- 28:22Speaker 4: And then I'm like, where's carp you know, I got,
- 28:25Speaker 4: you know, and then I ended up going uh and
- 28:28Speaker 4: so I kind of just tried to surround him so like,
- 28:31Speaker 4: because I don't know what happened he you know, obviously
- 28:34Speaker 4: I wasn't on the team when they were facing each
- 28:36Speaker 4: other all the time, but he was fired up, you know.
- 28:40Speaker 3: And so then I'm trying to hold him.
- 28:43Speaker 4: And then that's when who the I don't know who
- 28:46Speaker 4: it was, Queto was spiking him, but yeah, you know
- 28:50Speaker 4: I was he got he got the catcher LaRue and
- 28:53Speaker 4: hurt from yes bad and LaRue was such a great guy.
- 28:57Speaker 3: That was super sad. I mean, but that's those are
- 29:00Speaker 3: things that you know, like you know, but yeah, that
- 29:06Speaker 3: was that was That was nice. That was a nice
- 29:08Speaker 3: little one.
- 29:10Speaker 1: That's a good. All right, last thing before we let
- 29:12Speaker 1: you go. You're on social media and now, so tell
- 29:16Speaker 1: me about that.
- 29:18Speaker 4: The followers. Hey, I mean, let me let me tell you.
- 29:24Speaker 4: Let me tell your listeners about you.
- 29:27Speaker 3: So I I I'm trying to learn what it's called.
- 29:32Speaker 4: Instagram and and Twitter X and I don't know, Like
- 29:39Speaker 4: I was, like, what else am I going to do?
- 29:40Speaker 4: So I have like two followers, and so I reached
- 29:44Speaker 4: out to Kat, I said, man, I go listen. The
- 29:48Speaker 4: Cardinals they won't even follow me, Like I don't even
- 29:51Speaker 4: get it, like the organization. The Cardinals won't follow me,
- 29:55Speaker 4: but the Royals they followed me in like two seconds.
- 29:57Speaker 4: But I only got like two followers. And so you
- 30:01Speaker 4: tweeted out and then you did through exs like let's
- 30:04Speaker 4: help our friend out. And all of a sudden, I
- 30:09Speaker 4: went to ten followers in like a minute. And that
- 30:13Speaker 4: was because of you. That was because of you, baby.
- 30:17Speaker 2: That's ju Cat.
- 30:19Speaker 1: Let me tell you some shit. One of the all
- 30:21Speaker 1: time nicest guys I ever dealt with. I appreciate you
- 30:25Speaker 1: spending some time. First of all, I know you're going
- 30:27Speaker 1: to your daughter's tournament, so good luck to her, say
- 30:30Speaker 1: hi to Dana. But I just wanted to say thanks
- 30:33Speaker 1: for coming on. You're a good man, and I will
- 30:35Speaker 1: see you at the twenty sixteen reunion.
- 30:40Speaker 3: I can't wait to see you, dud, I can't. I
- 30:43Speaker 3: can't believe you don't call me every day and with
- 30:45Speaker 3: chat you're the same guy. You were then too, before
- 30:48Speaker 3: all the fame and all the glory.
- 30:51Speaker 4: And and I tell you what, it is hard to
- 30:55Speaker 4: be the dad of a picture's son, regardless, it doesn't
- 30:58Speaker 4: matter who you are. It's hard. And uh, I wish
- 31:02Speaker 4: him the best of luck. And you tell them, hey man,
- 31:04Speaker 4: keep your chin up. And you know it one in
- 31:06Speaker 4: doubt a little bit underneath the chinnel get people off
- 31:09Speaker 4: the plate.
- 31:09Speaker 3: You can still do that in high school, right. I mean,
- 31:12Speaker 3: in the big leagues you can, but in high school
- 31:13Speaker 3: you can.
- 31:15Speaker 1: Take your breath. Take your breath, super always a pleasure.
- 31:17Speaker 1: That's gonna do it for this edition of Cardinal Territory.
- 31:21Speaker 1: We'll see you next time. Hopefully that episode won't suck
