- 0:02Speaker 1: Here on a Thursday afternoon and beautiful sunny, warm, humid
- 0:07Speaker 1: as well, Tampa, Florida here on the Craigway Show from
- 0:11Speaker 1: SEC Football Media Days. Texas was the closing act. Sark
- 0:18Speaker 1: was the last head coach to speak in the news conference.
- 0:22Speaker 1: Mississippi State and Texas were the last two groups schools
- 0:27Speaker 1: that were represented with their head coaches and also with
- 0:32Speaker 1: their student athletes. They even visit with Jeff Levy for
- 0:34Speaker 1: a few moments. Standing outside waiting to my opportunity to
- 0:38Speaker 1: sit down with Arts was talking with Jeff Levy, the
- 0:41Speaker 1: head coach a Mississippi State, who I know his background
- 0:44Speaker 1: obviously from his high school days in Texas. In fact,
- 0:46Speaker 1: who his dad a long time was a longtime, very
- 0:49Speaker 1: successful high school football coach out in West Texas. But
- 0:53Speaker 1: as we mentioned, the way that it always works here
- 0:56Speaker 1: is you have an address to the general assembled media
- 1:03Speaker 1: both print and broadcast, and that includes you know, fan
- 1:06Speaker 1: sites and things like that as well from the head coach.
- 1:10Speaker 1: Then there are three student athletes and they make them
- 1:15Speaker 1: available at different points UH to different media in breakout sessions.
- 1:21Speaker 1: The UH head coach and the student athletes also UH
- 1:26Speaker 1: and they do more of this than they do anything else.
- 1:28Speaker 1: There's a lot of breakout things, one on ones that
- 1:31Speaker 1: they do with national tell like ESPN and CBS. UH,
- 1:36Speaker 1: they'll they'll do those, and then national radio like sirius
- 1:41Speaker 1: XM and some of the other ones.
- 1:43Speaker 2: Uh.
- 1:43Speaker 1: And then and and then if they have time, uh,
- 1:47Speaker 1: they do some other individual breakout uh interviews.
- 1:52Speaker 3: Uh.
- 1:52Speaker 1: Fortunately, as the flagship station of the University of Texas,
- 1:56Speaker 1: we get the opportunity to have a one on one
- 1:59Speaker 1: with ste Sarkasian, We have an opportunity to have one
- 2:02Speaker 1: on one with Arch Spanning, and we have the opportunity
- 2:05Speaker 1: to have one on one with Colin Simmons. And we'll
- 2:07Speaker 1: bring you those conversations. But again, the lead, leadoff thing
- 2:12Speaker 1: for the head coaches is the news conference, the General
- 2:17Speaker 1: Assembly news conference, if you will. So let's bring that
- 2:20Speaker 1: to you right now. Just a little while ago, the
- 2:23Speaker 1: last of the sixteen coaches here at SEC Media Days
- 2:26Speaker 1: with this press conference, coach Steve Sarkishan.
- 2:30Speaker 4: Like they say, they save the best for last. Right now,
- 2:33Speaker 4: y'all are ready to go home, So I'll make a
- 2:35Speaker 4: brief no I'm skin First of all, just some thank
- 2:38Speaker 4: you before we get going here. First of all, I'd
- 2:40Speaker 4: like to thank Commissioner Sankie. I know his job is
- 2:44Speaker 4: not easy, and I know in midst of college football
- 2:48Speaker 4: today and college athletics, there's a lot of change and
- 2:51Speaker 4: there's a lot that goes into his job. And I
- 2:53Speaker 4: can tell y'all from sitting in rooms with him and
- 2:56Speaker 4: a lot of phone calls, he's trying to do what's
- 2:59Speaker 4: best for our sport, not just for the Southeastern Conference.
- 3:03Speaker 4: He really is trying to do what's best for our sport.
- 3:05Speaker 4: I'd like to thank the leadership of the University of Texas,
- 3:08Speaker 4: you know, Chairman of the Board of Regents, Kevin el Tife,
- 3:11Speaker 4: Jim Davis, our president, and our athletic director Chris del Connie.
- 3:15Speaker 4: I know a lot of people talk about alignment, but
- 3:18Speaker 4: we are truly aligned.
- 3:19Speaker 5: And that was something that six.
- 3:21Speaker 4: Years ago when I took the job of one of
- 3:23Speaker 4: the reasons why I took the job was the alignment.
- 3:26Speaker 4: But it's shown and shown through time and time again,
- 3:30Speaker 4: and the job that Christell Connie has done at Texas
- 3:33Speaker 4: has been nothing short of remarkable, win to five of
- 3:37Speaker 4: the last six Director's Cups, and the just the absolute
- 3:42Speaker 4: strength in every sport in that entire athletic department is
- 3:45Speaker 4: something that I know he's proud of and we are
- 3:48Speaker 4: all very proud of to be part of.
- 3:50Speaker 5: I'd like to thank our staff.
- 3:52Speaker 4: Our staff is doing a tremendous job, and these guys
- 3:56Speaker 4: and as men and women are working extremely hard, not
- 3:59Speaker 4: only on the grass with our players, but in the building,
- 4:02Speaker 4: in the meeting rooms, in recruiting, being on the forefront
- 4:06Speaker 4: of doing things that have never been done before, and
- 4:10Speaker 4: just proud of the work that they do on a
- 4:12Speaker 4: daily basis. It's a demanding profession, it's a demanding job,
- 4:17Speaker 4: and their spouses, their families, the sacrifices they make for us,
- 4:22Speaker 4: for me, for the University of Texas doesn't go unnoticed.
- 4:25Speaker 4: So thank you all for what you do. And I
- 4:27Speaker 4: think our fans, the support that they give us is tremendous.
- 4:31Speaker 4: Longhorn Nation has just been phenomenal. I don't think people
- 4:35Speaker 4: know this because I think people think about home field
- 4:37Speaker 4: advantage and tough environments to play. We're twenty and one
- 4:41Speaker 4: in our last twenty one home games at DKR and
- 4:44Speaker 4: that's a direct reflection of our fans and the support
- 4:47Speaker 4: that they give us. And so thank you for your
- 4:49Speaker 4: support and all that we do know. Commissioner Sanki touched
- 4:54Speaker 4: on a few things and a few stats that I'm
- 4:58Speaker 4: really proud of our program, our organization, of what we've
- 5:01Speaker 4: been able to accomplish. And you think about, you know,
- 5:03Speaker 4: last season alone, we beat three top ten ranked teams
- 5:06Speaker 4: in a down year. The last two years, we've beaten
- 5:10Speaker 4: ten top twenty five ranked teams, which is more than
- 5:13Speaker 4: any other school in the country. I believe it's fourteen
- 5:17Speaker 4: wins over top twenty five teams over the last three years.
- 5:20Speaker 4: And so there's a lot to be proud of for
- 5:22Speaker 4: us at the University of Texas.
- 5:24Speaker 5: But I will say this.
- 5:25Speaker 4: At the University of Texas, the standard is the standard.
- 5:29Speaker 4: The standard is the standard. And I know the expectations
- 5:33Speaker 4: are high outside of our building. I know everybody wants
- 5:36Speaker 4: to say what percentage we are to make the playoffs
- 5:39Speaker 4: or what percentage it is for us to you know,
- 5:41Speaker 4: win a conference championship or make the CFP or be
- 5:44Speaker 4: a national champion. But the expectations are always high within
- 5:48Speaker 4: our organization. They're higher than you would imagine. They're higher
- 5:52Speaker 4: than they are on the outside world. And now more
- 5:54Speaker 4: than ever, external factors don't motivate us it's what we're
- 5:59Speaker 4: doing internally, and we've got a very hungry football team.
- 6:02Speaker 4: We've got a team that competed their tails off a
- 6:05Speaker 4: year ago and fell short of making the College Football
- 6:07Speaker 4: Playoff after the previous two years being in the semi
- 6:10Speaker 4: finals and knocking on the door to play for a
- 6:12Speaker 4: national title with the ball inside the ten yard line.
- 6:15Speaker 4: So those external factors, whether it's a comment or a tweet,
- 6:20Speaker 4: or a podcast or an interview by a pundit, that's
- 6:25Speaker 4: not going to motivate us. What motivates us is what
- 6:27Speaker 4: we do every single day. And I'm proud of the
- 6:29Speaker 4: leadership on our team for buying into that idea, and
- 6:34Speaker 4: I couldn't be more proud of the guys for the
- 6:36Speaker 4: way that they handle themselves that way, because we're going
- 6:39Speaker 4: to have to Our schedule's real, Okay, it's a real
- 6:42Speaker 4: football schedule, and I think the key to that is
- 6:44Speaker 4: focusing on us be enamored with what we do. That
- 6:48Speaker 4: takes great leadership, That takes great commitment, okay, and that
- 6:51Speaker 4: takes great that takes great mental and physical toughness to
- 6:55Speaker 4: make that happen. We've got three players here that I
- 6:57Speaker 4: think exude all of those three things. Obviously, we've got
- 7:01Speaker 4: Arch Manning here, We've got Colin Simmons, We've got Trevor Gooseby.
- 7:05Speaker 4: The first thing I'd like to say about those three
- 7:07Speaker 4: guys is all three of them signed with the University
- 7:10Speaker 4: of Texas out of high school. So when this era
- 7:12Speaker 4: of transfer portal, in this era of players coming from
- 7:16Speaker 4: you know, different places and building rosters and so on
- 7:19Speaker 4: and so forth, these were three guys that chose to
- 7:22Speaker 4: be part of our program when maybe our program wasn't
- 7:26Speaker 4: where it is today. You know, Arch and Trevor came
- 7:28Speaker 4: four years ago, we were an eight and five team
- 7:30Speaker 4: coming off of an Alamo Bowl loss against Washington. They
- 7:33Speaker 4: chose the University of Texas. Colin came the next year.
- 7:37Speaker 4: But I think all three of these guys exude the
- 7:39Speaker 4: leadership that is needed, the commitment to the program, the
- 7:42Speaker 4: commitment to their teammates, and the metal and physical toughness
- 7:46Speaker 4: to be a champion. And so proud to have all
- 7:48Speaker 4: three of those guys with us today. I will say this.
- 7:52Speaker 4: I know you all say it, but I'm going to
- 7:54Speaker 4: say it. We do have a talented roster. We do
- 7:57Speaker 4: have a good football team. We're balanced, you know, I think
- 8:00Speaker 4: we're good on offense, we're good on defense, we're good
- 8:02Speaker 4: on special teams. I'm not going to shy away from that.
- 8:04Speaker 4: To give you the coach speak. We do have a
- 8:07Speaker 4: talented team, but we've got to make that come to
- 8:10Speaker 4: life on every single Saturday against a challenging schedule. And
- 8:14Speaker 4: that's the challenge as their coach, is to get them
- 8:17Speaker 4: in the right mental space, the right physical space to
- 8:20Speaker 4: go out and be at their best when their best
- 8:22Speaker 4: is needed. And in our conference and in our non
- 8:24Speaker 4: conference schedule, that's every single Saturday. How did we build
- 8:28Speaker 4: this talented roster. We built it through attention, We kept
- 8:31Speaker 4: really good players on our team. We built it through
- 8:34Speaker 4: high school recruiting, all right. We signed a heck of
- 8:36Speaker 4: a high school class, which I think we're very proud
- 8:39Speaker 4: of that class. And we built it through the portal
- 8:41Speaker 4: and that's a credit to our recruiting department, all right,
- 8:44Speaker 4: of making those things come to life.
- 8:46Speaker 5: But you know, we.
- 8:47Speaker 4: Lost We lost forty scholarship players off of last year's team,
- 8:52Speaker 4: twenty four portal transfers, which was more than we ever had,
- 8:56Speaker 4: three early NFL draft picks, and thirteen seniors. With that,
- 8:59Speaker 4: we brought in forty seven new scholarship players, twenty two
- 9:03Speaker 4: through the portal, twenty five freshmen. Okay, and so a
- 9:06Speaker 4: lot of new faces. Culture is a big deal for us.
- 9:09Speaker 4: But our culture gets developed, you know, historically in the
- 9:13Speaker 4: summertime to get ready for a season. And I failed
- 9:16Speaker 4: our team a year ago by doing it that way,
- 9:18Speaker 4: and I felt like we didn't have the culture needed
- 9:20Speaker 4: early in the season to make that happen to be
- 9:22Speaker 4: the team that we were capable of being.
- 9:24Speaker 5: I learned my lesson. We started doing our culture work.
- 9:27Speaker 4: In February this year, and I think it's paid dividends.
- 9:30Speaker 4: I was just on the plane with these guys coming
- 9:33Speaker 4: over and to a man, they all said, Man, I
- 9:36Speaker 4: can't I love how summer's going. I love how close
- 9:39Speaker 4: we are as a team. I mean, these guys were
- 9:41Speaker 4: doing a scavenger hunt yesterday and calling an archer, competing
- 9:44Speaker 4: until the end. Their two teams were the one at
- 9:46Speaker 4: the end, racing.
- 9:47Speaker 2: To win it.
- 9:48Speaker 4: And then everybody's sweating bullets. It's one hundred degrees in
- 9:51Speaker 4: Austin right now, and they're having a blast together as
- 9:53Speaker 4: a team. And those are the moments that are going
- 9:56Speaker 4: to get us through the tough fourth quarters. Those are
- 9:58Speaker 4: the moments that are going to get us through some
- 10:00Speaker 4: tough road games of where we're headed this fall. So
- 10:04Speaker 4: proud of those guys for buying into what was going
- 10:06Speaker 4: to be so important to this team. We are not
- 10:10Speaker 4: a finished product. We've got plenty to improve upon from
- 10:13Speaker 4: last year. It goes without saying, we've got to become
- 10:16Speaker 4: a better run football team. We did not run the
- 10:18Speaker 4: ball to the standard and the capabilities of what it
- 10:22Speaker 4: is at the University of Texas. Now we can make
- 10:25Speaker 4: that better variety of ways. You got to get better
- 10:28Speaker 4: upfront as an offensive line group. You've got to have
- 10:31Speaker 4: capable runners that can do that. You've got to provide
- 10:34Speaker 4: weapons on the perimeter that people have to deploy to
- 10:37Speaker 4: guard against. And you've got to put schemes together that
- 10:40Speaker 4: they can operate and do at a high level. I
- 10:42Speaker 4: think we've addressed all those areas. In the run game,
- 10:45Speaker 4: We've got to create more explosive plays. When we're at
- 10:48Speaker 4: our best, we're at a very explosive offensive football team.
- 10:52Speaker 4: We were not that a year ago compared to where
- 10:54Speaker 4: we were two years ago. The run game is a
- 10:56Speaker 4: huge component to that. But we've got to become a
- 10:59Speaker 4: more explosive foot ball team. And we've got to minimize
- 11:01Speaker 4: the penalties.
- 11:02Speaker 5: We've got to.
- 11:03Speaker 4: Fight the urge of playing behind the chains. And I
- 11:07Speaker 4: say fight the urge because I think there's an urge
- 11:09Speaker 4: to some of the penalties that we get, and so
- 11:12Speaker 4: we've got to minimize those penalties. All of that, we're
- 11:15Speaker 4: talking about consistency on the offensive side of the ball,
- 11:18Speaker 4: and so you know, to me, you put all those
- 11:21Speaker 4: things together, we have a chance to be a very
- 11:22Speaker 4: good offensive football team. But we got some areas for
- 11:25Speaker 4: improvement come the fall that need to show themselves defensively. Obviously,
- 11:29Speaker 4: we've hired Will Muschamp to be our defensive coordinator. Has
- 11:33Speaker 4: been a great addition. It was everything I thought this
- 11:36Speaker 4: higher could be. You know, Will and I philosophically are
- 11:40Speaker 4: very similar. We believe in a style of defense that
- 11:43Speaker 4: that is in your face, that is tough, that as
- 11:45Speaker 4: hard nos but yet, and we believe in coaching hard
- 11:50Speaker 4: but yet. We believe in having a relationship and rapport
- 11:53Speaker 4: with the players on the team and Will does that
- 11:55Speaker 4: and it's been great having him. Now, where do we
- 11:58Speaker 4: need to improve defensively? We've got to more havoc we
- 12:01Speaker 4: need to create more negative plays, right, and we should
- 12:03Speaker 4: have the capability and to get that done, we've got
- 12:07Speaker 4: to minimize the explosives, right, and so you know, making sure,
- 12:10Speaker 4: especially in the past defense, that that we minimize those
- 12:13Speaker 4: explosive plays. And then we've got to be even better
- 12:16Speaker 4: on third down, and most notably, we've got to be
- 12:18Speaker 4: better in the red area, especially on third down. And
- 12:21Speaker 4: so some areas of improvement for us there.
- 12:23Speaker 5: But I think this you know a lot.
- 12:25Speaker 4: I know there's been a lot of tough guys like
- 12:27Speaker 4: I've been sitting at home watching the three and a
- 12:29Speaker 4: half days of this stuff too. Okay, so I'm hearing
- 12:31Speaker 4: everybody talk about the same thing. I can't wait to
- 12:34Speaker 4: hear the same questions get asked that you were asking
- 12:36Speaker 4: Kirby three days ago.
- 12:37Speaker 5: Okay, I think this about the SEC.
- 12:40Speaker 4: We've got a nine game conference schedule, the challenges week
- 12:44Speaker 4: in and week out, making sure that our football team
- 12:47Speaker 4: is mentally and physically tough enough and prepared to play
- 12:52Speaker 4: because that's what's required in the in this conference, week
- 12:55Speaker 4: in and week out, because if you're not, you will
- 12:57Speaker 4: get beat. It's not about beating us one time, It's
- 13:02Speaker 4: about beating us the nine times. That's the challenge of
- 13:05Speaker 4: this conference and that's.
- 13:06Speaker 2: What we're prepared.
- 13:07Speaker 5: We will prepare our team to do. Looking forward to
- 13:10Speaker 5: the opportunity.
- 13:11Speaker 4: Uh, it's a heck of a schedule, you know, and
- 13:14Speaker 4: and couldn't be more excited just about this team and
- 13:17Speaker 4: about where I think this team can go. Just a
- 13:19Speaker 4: couple things of note, housekeeping things h Cole Hudson, which
- 13:23Speaker 4: you all saw the the temporary restraining order on the
- 13:28Speaker 4: five for five. You know that's still up in the air.
- 13:31Speaker 4: I don't have much more to say about it. We'll
- 13:32Speaker 4: see how that goes. And then one addition for us,
- 13:36Speaker 4: John Meredith will be an early and rollie for us.
- 13:39Speaker 4: He's reclassified. He'll be with the team this fall. Is
- 13:42Speaker 4: a great player for us at dB that we couldn't
- 13:44Speaker 4: be more excited to have on board with us.
- 13:46Speaker 5: So with that will open up the questions.
- 13:48Speaker 6: Thank you, Coach Sharkisian. If you have a question, Lauren,
- 13:51Speaker 6: Peyton and Lane have microphones. We'll go ahead and come
- 13:55Speaker 6: up here and start right here on our centerile right
- 13:58Speaker 6: there to the left.
- 13:59Speaker 7: Okay, Hey, Coach John Abraham ninety seven to seven ESP
- 14:03Speaker 7: in the zone in Huntsville, Alabama. I just wanted you
- 14:05Speaker 7: to talk a little bit about the wide receiver room
- 14:07Speaker 7: Ryan Wingo as well as Cam Coleman as.
- 14:11Speaker 2: He was at it during the offseason.
- 14:13Speaker 4: Yeah, we're very you know, we love our wide receiver room.
- 14:16Speaker 4: I think all those guys are six two plus. All
- 14:18Speaker 4: those guys are to over two hundred pounds. They're physical,
- 14:21Speaker 4: they're fast, They've all played a lot of football, you
- 14:23Speaker 4: know when you think about their careers. Obviously, Ryan will
- 14:26Speaker 4: be in his third year with US in the program,
- 14:28Speaker 4: knows the system, knows the scheme really came on last year.
- 14:32Speaker 4: I think people forget he was a second team All
- 14:34Speaker 4: SEC receiver a year ago.
- 14:36Speaker 5: Very explosive player.
- 14:38Speaker 4: Mosley came to US last year after his freshman year
- 14:40Speaker 4: at Stanford, where he caught fifty balls, was injured the
- 14:43Speaker 4: first part of the season. Really came on the second
- 14:46Speaker 4: half of the season. He is playing at a high
- 14:49Speaker 4: level for US right now. And then the addition of
- 14:51Speaker 4: Cam Coleman's been a great addition. And you know the
- 14:54Speaker 4: thing about Cam, everybody sees the highlight plays, the playmaking ability,
- 15:00Speaker 4: you know, the physical ability that he has. What I
- 15:02Speaker 4: love is the person. You know, this guy's a great
- 15:05Speaker 4: human being. He's a guy that is a great teammate.
- 15:09Speaker 4: He's one of our hardest workers. I just think he's
- 15:12Speaker 4: been a great addition to that room, to that offense.
- 15:14Speaker 4: I know he's got good rapport with Arch. So excited
- 15:17Speaker 4: to have him.
- 15:18Speaker 2: Okay, we'll go down in front of me.
- 15:19Speaker 8: Second row, Hey, Steve Stedrick Golden Austin, American Statesman arch Manning.
- 15:27Speaker 8: The name on the back of his jersey brings as
- 15:30Speaker 8: much notoriety as the one on the front. How did
- 15:33Speaker 8: the growing pains of last season? How would that benefit
- 15:37Speaker 8: him this year?
- 15:38Speaker 5: Yeah, I'd like to touch on that.
- 15:40Speaker 4: You know, arch Manning a year ago wasn't on social
- 15:43Speaker 4: media or on television saying I'm going to be the
- 15:46Speaker 4: first pick of the draft. He wasn't on television saying
- 15:49Speaker 4: I'm gonna win the Heisman Trophy. All he did was
- 15:52Speaker 4: work really hard. All he did was try to be
- 15:53Speaker 4: the best teammate he can be. And then we had
- 15:57Speaker 4: some failures as a team. He didn't have He did
- 16:00Speaker 4: and played to the way of what he was capable
- 16:02Speaker 4: of playing. And then those same people that were saying
- 16:04Speaker 4: that about him wanted to criticize.
- 16:07Speaker 5: And demean him.
- 16:08Speaker 4: Almost for letting them down because he didn't live up
- 16:11Speaker 4: to what they thought he was going to be. Very
- 16:14Speaker 4: interesting concept right there, and I think the way of
- 16:18Speaker 4: what he got put through probably would have melted or
- 16:22Speaker 4: destroyed ninety nine percent of people in his shoes. All
- 16:26Speaker 4: he did was stay consistent to true to who he
- 16:28Speaker 4: was was, which continue to work hard, continue to be
- 16:31Speaker 4: a great teammate, try to get better. And he did,
- 16:34Speaker 4: and he came out and played the second half of
- 16:36Speaker 4: the season at a really high level. We go seven
- 16:38Speaker 4: and one, He's got twenty touchdowns, only two turnovers. He's
- 16:42Speaker 4: a fantastic player at the end of the year. But
- 16:45Speaker 4: he didn't go back on social media and say I
- 16:47Speaker 4: told you so. And all he's done this year is
- 16:50Speaker 4: continue to work hard again. And so there's always going
- 16:52Speaker 4: to be outside opinions of that guy, and that comes
- 16:55Speaker 4: with the territory and he understands that. But I think
- 16:58Speaker 4: he learned a lot about himself last year about dealing
- 17:00Speaker 4: with adversity and overcoming and I think he learned a
- 17:04Speaker 4: lot about his teammates and the support that they gave him,
- 17:07Speaker 4: and then recognizing the mental and physical toughness that he
- 17:10Speaker 4: has to play the position. To be their leader, and
- 17:13Speaker 4: I think that he's grown into a great leader for us,
- 17:15Speaker 4: and so I'm very proud of Arts for the way
- 17:17Speaker 4: he's carried himself, the way he represents the University of Texas.
- 17:21Speaker 4: I think right now he's a very dangerous player because
- 17:24Speaker 4: he learned a lot from last season, and he's surrounded
- 17:26Speaker 4: by some good players, and I think that he's a
- 17:28Speaker 4: guy that's poised for.
- 17:29Speaker 5: A heck of a season.
- 17:31Speaker 6: Coach will go over to our right hand side on
- 17:33Speaker 6: the aisle.
- 17:34Speaker 9: Good after you and coach at Jacob Werlin Carrio I Sports,
- 17:37Speaker 9: what does plane on time actually look like for your quarterbacks?
- 17:41Speaker 4: Well, everything that we do is a progression based offense,
- 17:45Speaker 4: and so you have a first read, a second read,
- 17:47Speaker 4: a third read, a fourth read, so on and so forth,
- 17:50Speaker 4: and those reads are basically tied to his feet right,
- 17:54Speaker 4: whether it's a quick game, an RPO, a drop back pass,
- 17:57Speaker 4: a play action pass, and so being on time is
- 18:01Speaker 4: when that read is available to throw the ball to
- 18:04Speaker 4: that the timing of his drop marys with where he
- 18:07Speaker 4: should be. If it's a drop back pass on his
- 18:10Speaker 4: fifth step is his first read open, the ball comes out.
- 18:12Speaker 4: If it's not, he hitches to his second read and
- 18:15Speaker 4: then hitches to his third read, so on and so forth,
- 18:18Speaker 4: and so that's.
- 18:18Speaker 5: What it looks like.
- 18:20Speaker 4: I think the one thing that we saw real development
- 18:22Speaker 4: in Arch a year ago.
- 18:24Speaker 5: If you watch his pocket.
- 18:25Speaker 4: Presence and the way he moves in the pocket, he
- 18:27Speaker 4: moves like a pro. And he didn't have very many
- 18:30Speaker 4: clean pockets last year. It was tough and we weren't
- 18:32Speaker 4: great around him. But man, the guy worked at his
- 18:35Speaker 4: craft in the pocket, and then the value of that
- 18:38Speaker 4: was when he got some better pockets later in the year,
- 18:41Speaker 4: he was able to take advantage of it.
- 18:43Speaker 6: Coach, we'll go back in front of me. Second row Kirk.
- 18:50Speaker 10: Kurk Balls from the Houston Chronicle. Steve, you've told us
- 18:53Speaker 10: that you didn't feel like your team was rewarded for
- 18:56Speaker 10: playing in that big intersectional game at Ohio State, And
- 19:00Speaker 10: I was curious, where do you feel like that is
- 19:02Speaker 10: as far as other schools scheduling attractive, you know, non
- 19:06Speaker 10: conference games, and he's still playing on playing Notre Dame
- 19:09Speaker 10: in eight and twelve.
- 19:11Speaker 4: Yeah, no, I think that that's that's always a it's
- 19:16Speaker 4: always a tough topic because I'm you know, I try
- 19:19Speaker 4: to move on right, I'm we're in twenty twenty six,
- 19:22Speaker 4: and I but I think back to twenty twenty five,
- 19:25Speaker 4: like we have to learn from history, and you know,
- 19:29Speaker 4: but I have to go back to to twenty twenty three. Really,
- 19:35Speaker 4: we beat Alabama at Alabama, and that might have been
- 19:39Speaker 4: the game that probably got us into the playoff that
- 19:42Speaker 4: year in a four team playoff. We played at Ohio
- 19:46Speaker 4: State last year, or excuse me, we played at Michigan
- 19:50Speaker 4: the next year. I'm not saying that was the game
- 19:52Speaker 4: that got us in, but it surely played a part
- 19:54Speaker 4: right of getting us into the twelve team playoff, and
- 19:56Speaker 4: it got us a better seed winning that game.
- 19:59Speaker 5: Last year. We didn't win the game.
- 20:01Speaker 4: At Ohio State, Okay, And so I'm torn because I
- 20:04Speaker 4: have two thoughts on this. One is, if we beat
- 20:08Speaker 4: Ohio State last year, surely you weren't a much better
- 20:11Speaker 4: position when it comes to the playoffs. But on the
- 20:14Speaker 4: other side of it is, if I don't play Ohio
- 20:16Speaker 4: State and I played Jones Junior High and we're ten
- 20:19Speaker 4: and two and our two losses are to Georgia and Florida,
- 20:24Speaker 4: we're a playoff team. But like anything in this world,
- 20:28Speaker 4: if you want to be really good at something you
- 20:30Speaker 4: got to take risk. There's calculated risks involved in life
- 20:34Speaker 4: that you have to take. It's no different than playing quarterback.
- 20:37Speaker 4: You got to take some risks at time. There's no
- 20:39Speaker 4: different than being a play call. You got to take
- 20:41Speaker 4: that risk. There's no different than investing in a company
- 20:43Speaker 4: or not. You're taking a risk. And so, yes, there's
- 20:46Speaker 4: risk involved in playing a high level non conference schedule,
- 20:51Speaker 4: but there's a lot of value in that win. There's
- 20:54Speaker 4: a lot of value in that win if you can
- 20:56Speaker 4: get the win, and so is the juice worth the
- 20:58Speaker 4: squeeze or not. That's what we're all tasked with. And
- 21:00Speaker 4: so I don't know yet about Notre Dame. We'll see
- 21:03Speaker 4: because I think the committee's got to show us what
- 21:05Speaker 4: happens now and what's the value that they're placing on
- 21:09Speaker 4: strength of schedule and are we ever are we going
- 21:12Speaker 4: to let a nine to three team in as an
- 21:14Speaker 4: at large? We'll find out, and I think that this
- 21:16Speaker 4: year is going to be a great test to that
- 21:18Speaker 4: of what that looks like.
- 21:19Speaker 2: Okay, we'll go over here on our left hand side,
- 21:23Speaker 2: Coach CJ. Vogel with on Texas Football.
- 21:25Speaker 11: Over here, I wanted to ask you just in the
- 21:28Speaker 11: sense of chasing. I know you say you don't listen
- 21:32Speaker 11: to the media pugnance, and I love you guys listen
- 21:35Speaker 11: to what we say and the polls. But essentially, given
- 21:39Speaker 11: that Georgia's won the conference the last two years, is
- 21:42Speaker 11: that the team that the conference and yourself are still
- 21:45Speaker 11: chasing after as the top team currently.
- 21:48Speaker 4: You know, there's a there's a lot of lot of
- 21:50Speaker 4: sayings and quotes in the in the sports world in particular,
- 21:54Speaker 4: but this one probably is the most fitting. If you
- 21:56Speaker 4: want to be the champion, you got to beat the champion,
- 22:00Speaker 4: and it's no more fitting for us. We've played Georgia
- 22:02Speaker 4: three times, they've beaten us. All the credit in the
- 22:04Speaker 4: world to Kirby their team. They're tough, they're good. So
- 22:08Speaker 4: if we want to be a champion, I'm guessing we'll
- 22:10Speaker 4: probably have to beat the champion to make that happen, which.
- 22:14Speaker 2: We'll go straight down in front of us again.
- 22:16Speaker 12: Third row Danny Davis Houst, American statesment on going back
- 22:20Speaker 12: to the news, you just I guess broke.
- 22:22Speaker 2: What does John Meredith to bring this team?
- 22:23Speaker 12: And I'm not sure when he turns eighteen, but can
- 22:25Speaker 12: someone that young contribute at the cornerback position right away.
- 22:29Speaker 4: Yeah, he's already turned eighteen, turned eighteen a couple weeks ago.
- 22:33Speaker 4: You know, he provides great length, great speed, tremendous man
- 22:38Speaker 4: to man ability, very confident, very aggressive, all the attributes
- 22:42Speaker 4: you want in a defensive back.
- 22:43Speaker 5: It's not a secret, you know why.
- 22:45Speaker 4: He was a top two or three player in the
- 22:47Speaker 4: country in the twenty twenty seven class. So for us
- 22:51Speaker 4: to get him now, we'll see how far we can
- 22:53Speaker 4: take him. Like I told he, I told his mom,
- 22:55Speaker 4: Coach Muschamp, coach orfe we don't have an expectation on
- 22:59Speaker 4: him him of a timetable. We're going to coach him.
- 23:02Speaker 4: We're going to develop him. When he's ready, I think
- 23:05Speaker 4: you'll be good enough to play. How long that takes
- 23:08Speaker 4: to get him ready, that's going to be the race.
- 23:09Speaker 4: That's the challenge. Week one, week four, week eight. I
- 23:12Speaker 4: don't know. I do know he's got the right competitive spirit.
- 23:16Speaker 4: I do know he's got the skill set and the
- 23:17Speaker 4: ability to be a good player for us.
- 23:19Speaker 5: How long it takes we'll find out.
- 23:21Speaker 6: Okay, we'll go down that center al again on the left.
- 23:25Speaker 13: Coach Steve Curtis one of seven seven the franchise. You
- 23:28Speaker 13: said that you began emphasizing culture work back in February
- 23:31Speaker 13: because you thought there needed to be some changes from
- 23:33Speaker 13: last year. But as you're entering your sixth season leading
- 23:36Speaker 13: the program, a lot of people would think that cultures
- 23:38Speaker 13: already well established. So what led you to think that
- 23:42Speaker 13: additional culture work needed to be done and what specifically
- 23:45Speaker 13: did you want to see change from last season?
- 23:47Speaker 5: Well, I think this.
- 23:48Speaker 4: We have forty seven new faces in our locker room,
- 23:52Speaker 4: so they don't have anything established in our culture. We
- 23:55Speaker 4: have to get them ingrained into our culture. And so
- 23:57Speaker 4: that's why we back that up, to start that process,
- 24:00Speaker 4: to get.
- 24:00Speaker 5: More guys in grains sooner. We do a lot of work.
- 24:03Speaker 4: We do things called culture Wednesday around our building where
- 24:07Speaker 4: we tap into the person, the whole person, and we
- 24:11Speaker 4: get authentic, We get transparent, We laugh, we cry, we hug,
- 24:16Speaker 4: we write note cars.
- 24:17Speaker 5: To one another.
- 24:19Speaker 4: Because we have to become a connected football team like that.
- 24:23Speaker 4: That's what gets us to where we want to go
- 24:25Speaker 4: and through those hard times all the way to fast
- 24:28Speaker 4: forward to yesterday. We did a scavenger hunt and we
- 24:31Speaker 4: broke everybody up into teams and they did a scavenger
- 24:34Speaker 4: on the forty eight scavenger hunt on the forty acres
- 24:37Speaker 4: and it comes down to Arch and Collins teams sweating
- 24:40Speaker 4: competing in the fifty yard line of DKR and they
- 24:43Speaker 4: loved it, like, that's the stuff that we're doing now.
- 24:46Speaker 4: Sooner then maybe we'd be not doing that even until
- 24:50Speaker 4: the end of training camp.
- 24:51Speaker 5: And so I think it's going to benefit us.
- 24:53Speaker 4: I think the connectivity these guys have right now is huge.
- 24:56Speaker 4: But why because we got forty seven new faces when
- 24:59Speaker 4: historically have about twenty or twenty two.
- 25:02Speaker 6: Okay, we'll go back down the center old onto our
- 25:04Speaker 6: right hand side.
- 25:05Speaker 3: Hey, coach Rob Gregson a Z Sports, you talked about
- 25:08Speaker 3: a lot of the culture and the shift amongst the
- 25:11Speaker 3: group that's returning. Is there a new mentality after missing
- 25:15Speaker 3: the CFP last year.
- 25:18Speaker 4: I don't know if it's a new one. I just
- 25:20Speaker 4: think there's a more committed one. I think that this
- 25:23Speaker 4: group holistically is committed to the mission of being a champion,
- 25:28Speaker 4: and they're not just saying it right, it's not about
- 25:30Speaker 4: what we say, it's about what we do, and their
- 25:32Speaker 4: actions are showing it.
- 25:33Speaker 5: These guys are committed.
- 25:34Speaker 4: They're helping one another, they're working with one another. They're
- 25:37Speaker 4: holding each other accountable, and I'm very proud of them
- 25:40Speaker 4: for that, because that's not an easy thing to do
- 25:42Speaker 4: in college when people are making nil and they're eighteen
- 25:46Speaker 4: to twenty two year old men. But these guys have
- 25:49Speaker 4: committed to that as this as part of their journey.
- 25:52Speaker 4: And that starts with Colin and Arch and Trevor, but
- 25:56Speaker 4: that goes to Jolana McDonald, ty, Anthony Smith, Rashim Biles,
- 26:00Speaker 4: Ryan Wingo, all.
- 26:01Speaker 5: The people we've been touching on. So that's not easy.
- 26:05Speaker 5: They're doing it.
- 26:06Speaker 4: I'm proud of them, and I think they'll reap the
- 26:08Speaker 4: benefits of it come the fall.
- 26:10Speaker 6: I have time for a couple more. We'll start in
- 26:11Speaker 6: the section in front of me. About midway back right
- 26:14Speaker 6: in the middle had their coach, Evan Veith.
- 26:18Speaker 14: Inside Texas, You've talked a lot about culture and also
- 26:21Speaker 14: how many new players you've had to add, whether it
- 26:23Speaker 14: be the portal or recruiting. You've already seemed to get
- 26:26Speaker 14: some good returns from Reshim and dayly In. When it
- 26:29Speaker 14: comes to leadership, how difficult is it in the portal
- 26:32Speaker 14: process to kind of scout personality and culture fit when
- 26:36Speaker 14: you only have so much time with them compared to recruiting,
- 26:39Speaker 14: and how have you maybe improved at that aspect of
- 26:41Speaker 14: your time at Texas.
- 26:42Speaker 5: It's very difficult.
- 26:43Speaker 4: You know, it's like speed dating, you know, where you
- 26:46Speaker 4: think about in high school, you're recruiting a kid for
- 26:49Speaker 4: two or three years. In the portal, you might be
- 26:51Speaker 4: recruiting for two or three weeks if you're lucky.
- 26:55Speaker 5: I feel like.
- 26:56Speaker 4: Every year is different on when you bring in the
- 26:58Speaker 4: portal guys of did we get it all right or not?
- 27:02Speaker 4: And I know it's easy to say, hey, this year
- 27:05Speaker 4: we got it right compared to other years, And honestly,
- 27:09Speaker 4: I would say we did our due diligence, but we
- 27:11Speaker 4: got lucky. This group is incredible that we brought in.
- 27:15Speaker 4: They're bought in. They want to be a champion, they
- 27:18Speaker 4: want to be part of this culture. Rashem Biles, Cam Coleman,
- 27:22Speaker 4: Raleik Brown, Hollywood Smothers, Melvins and I Lawrence Seymour. I'm
- 27:26Speaker 4: leaving a bunch of guys out, but like they're committed
- 27:28Speaker 4: to the cause and that's hard to do to bring
- 27:31Speaker 4: in all these transfers and be like that.
- 27:33Speaker 2: And so.
- 27:35Speaker 5: I think we got it right.
- 27:36Speaker 4: I think we got a little bit lucky too that
- 27:38Speaker 4: we got it right, because you know, how do you
- 27:40Speaker 4: really know? Well, I'm starting to really know now as
- 27:43Speaker 4: these guys are in some of the adversity that they're
- 27:46Speaker 4: running in DKR at four in the afternoon. They're in
- 27:48Speaker 4: the sampit at four in the afternoon in Austin, Texas
- 27:50Speaker 4: in July.
- 27:51Speaker 5: That's not fun.
- 27:52Speaker 4: But them hanging in there with their teammates and getting
- 27:55Speaker 4: through some of that adversity is exciting for us.
- 27:58Speaker 2: We'll take one final question in the center out to
- 28:01Speaker 2: the right.
- 28:01Speaker 9: Coach Bryan Sprolet, Columbia Missourian. Last season, y'all lost a
- 28:04Speaker 9: couple of early season matchups on the road against Ohio
- 28:08Speaker 9: State and Florida, but it was clear that you weren't
- 28:10Speaker 9: in rhythm and that the team in the second half
- 28:12Speaker 9: was a much different team playing. How do you find
- 28:15Speaker 9: a rhythm earlier this year? So that way, every game
- 28:18Speaker 9: after Week five is in a muscling game. To get
- 28:20Speaker 9: into the playoffs this year, well, you know.
- 28:23Speaker 4: I think we've got to keep practice as competitive as possible.
- 28:26Speaker 4: You know, iron sharpens iron, and you know, calling going
- 28:29Speaker 4: against Trevor every day, that's a good thing, right Arch
- 28:32Speaker 4: working against muss Champs defense. That's a good thing, you know,
- 28:35Speaker 4: Jolana McDonald guarding Emmitt Moseley.
- 28:37Speaker 5: That's a good thing.
- 28:38Speaker 4: So the good on good stuff, we got to continue
- 28:40Speaker 4: to elevate that. I think secondly is trusting the process
- 28:45Speaker 4: and trusting who we are as a team when we
- 28:48Speaker 4: get to those games. And so, you know, we're fortunate, Hey,
- 28:51Speaker 4: our first game's not out Ohio State. Our first game
- 28:53Speaker 4: is back at dk R. You know, so with a
- 28:55Speaker 4: young team that was that was a tough task. I
- 28:58Speaker 4: think anybody who's been to the Swamp at Floria to
- 29:00Speaker 4: tell you that's a tough place to play. We needed
- 29:02Speaker 4: to be better in those moments than we were. But
- 29:05Speaker 4: there's a lot of teams that went to those two
- 29:07Speaker 4: stadiums over the last few years and probably didn't come
- 29:09Speaker 4: out on top. And so but we've got a relish
- 29:12Speaker 4: in our ability to play on the road because we
- 29:14Speaker 4: are we are playing at Kyle Field, we are playing
- 29:16Speaker 4: at Death Valley, we are we are going to Tennessee,
- 29:19Speaker 4: we are going to Missouri. Like those are tough places
- 29:22Speaker 4: to play, and in our conference, there are no easy
- 29:24Speaker 4: places on the road, and so we've got to be
- 29:26Speaker 4: better in those hostile environments of execution, of minimizing the
- 29:31Speaker 4: self inflicted wounds, and then having the ability to finish
- 29:34Speaker 4: in the fourth quarter.
- 29:35Speaker 6: Courch Serkisian, thank you for your time this afternon rid
- 29:38Speaker 6: y'all hook them.
- 29:38Speaker 1: Thanks long wrns, said coach Steve Sarkisian. With the news
- 29:43Speaker 1: conference here now again, coming up next hour my sit
- 29:46Speaker 1: down conversation with sark we get into a couple of
- 29:48Speaker 1: different things as well. Also next hour you'll hear my
- 29:52Speaker 1: conversation with Archpanning.
- 29:53Speaker 2: Up next, we're gonna hear from.
- 29:54Speaker 1: Colin Simmons when we continue from SEC Football Media Days.
- 29:58Speaker 2: I'm thirteen hunderd the Sven.
- 30:00Speaker 15: Welcome back to the Craig Way Show and the Voice
- 30:02Speaker 15: of the Longhorns.
- 30:03Speaker 2: Craig.
- 30:04Speaker 5: Follow Craig on social media at Horn Voice.
- 30:09Speaker 1: It's getting I can see what the producer Jay Hermon
- 30:11Speaker 1: did here there with cream that classic sunshine of your love.
- 30:17Speaker 1: They were there at clapped in the scene. We're in
- 30:19Speaker 1: the Sunshine, Yes, we're in the Sunshine State. We're in
- 30:21Speaker 1: Cigar City, you know, with all the his the history
- 30:25Speaker 1: of cigar manufacturing here in Tampa, Florida. This is a
- 30:30Speaker 1: town I've always liked an awful lot about last night.
- 30:33Speaker 1: Cameron Parker and Mike Hardball Harts and I had a
- 30:37Speaker 1: very nice meal at one of my favorite places.
- 30:39Speaker 2: More on that coming up next hour.
- 30:41Speaker 1: Let's hear from Colin Simmons, Longhorns edge rusher going into
- 30:45Speaker 1: his junior campaign now a freshman year was just crazy
- 30:51Speaker 1: at Matt after getting after the quarterbacks modified the game
- 30:54Speaker 1: a bit more as a something we've heard start talking
- 30:56Speaker 1: about it as as working against the run was a
- 31:00Speaker 1: part parcel of the conversation that I had with the
- 31:03Speaker 1: junior from Duncingville. Colin, do you you start to feel
- 31:07Speaker 1: like being a little bit of an old veteran now?
- 31:09Speaker 1: I mean here, You've you've gotten through uh you know,
- 31:12Speaker 1: uh the build up the freshman season last year and
- 31:15Speaker 1: now being a veteran, how how much of a leader
- 31:18Speaker 1: and a veteran do you feel like that?
- 31:19Speaker 16: You know, it hasn't really, it really hasn't hit me
- 31:22Speaker 16: until the younger guys came in there calling me unk.
- 31:26Speaker 2: I'm not I'm nowhere near unk. I'm still you. I
- 31:29Speaker 2: really status. I barely have ten here to be called
- 31:32Speaker 2: a yunk.
- 31:32Speaker 16: So just being called unk made me realize that Okay,
- 31:36Speaker 16: Now I'm one of the older guys. Now, you know,
- 31:39Speaker 16: I'm a leader. People looking up, people look up to me.
- 31:41Speaker 16: I got to carry myself a certain type of way.
- 31:43Speaker 16: You know, the things that I say, you know, how
- 31:45Speaker 16: I handle my business on and off the field.
- 31:49Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean I remember, uh when I did a
- 31:53Speaker 1: couple of your state championship games for television, and I remember, uh,
- 31:57Speaker 1: I remember church samples and then some of your teammates
- 31:59Speaker 1: talking how you were a leader.
- 32:01Speaker 2: Then does that.
- 32:03Speaker 1: Help prepare you for the time even though two more
- 32:06Speaker 1: years passed by before you would drop back into that
- 32:09Speaker 1: leadership role again.
- 32:10Speaker 16: Well, like I've been saying, like I feel like I've
- 32:12Speaker 16: my Grandma always told me that I've been a natural
- 32:15Speaker 16: born leader. Like I've always been a leader since I
- 32:18Speaker 16: was a little kid, a little young And you know,
- 32:20Speaker 16: people want people gravitating towards me, people looking up towards me,
- 32:24Speaker 16: you know, looking at what I do. You know how
- 32:26Speaker 16: I move, how I talk and walk, And you know,
- 32:29Speaker 16: I think it just carried on as the years going by.
- 32:32Speaker 1: You, according to the coach, Sark made really huge tries
- 32:36Speaker 1: against the run a year ago. With that into your
- 32:41Speaker 1: skills and skill set as a pass rusher as well.
- 32:44Speaker 1: Do you feel like this is where the game takes
- 32:46Speaker 1: another step forward for you, not only the pass and
- 32:49Speaker 1: the run and the leadership, but the total defensive player.
- 32:52Speaker 16: Yeah, of course. But you know there's always things to
- 32:54Speaker 16: work on. You know, there's always things to improve, There's
- 32:57Speaker 16: always things to work on. You know, I'm not a
- 32:58Speaker 16: complete player right now. You know, just because I learned
- 33:02Speaker 16: how to play the run doesn't.
- 33:03Speaker 2: Make me complete.
- 33:04Speaker 16: You know, I still got to learn the aspect of
- 33:06Speaker 16: the game itself. You know, got to learn what the
- 33:09Speaker 16: offenses is in. You know what they're running, you know
- 33:12Speaker 16: what's their tennessees. You know, just understanding the game of
- 33:14Speaker 16: football itself. That will make once I get that downpack
- 33:18Speaker 16: and you know, once I complete that part of my game,
- 33:22Speaker 16: then I'll be completed.
- 33:24Speaker 2: Uh.
- 33:24Speaker 1: You've been described as coach mush Champs type of player.
- 33:28Speaker 1: What's the relationship been like working with coach musch Champ.
- 33:32Speaker 16: I love musch Shamp. You know what he brings to
- 33:34Speaker 16: the team, what he brings to the defense. I feel like, shoot,
- 33:38Speaker 16: he brings the right energy that he brings the energy
- 33:41Speaker 16: that we needed, not only that the defense needed, but
- 33:43Speaker 16: the team and you know, it's been good.
- 33:45Speaker 2: It's been fun working under him.
- 33:47Speaker 1: And yeah, all right, I got arches side of the
- 33:50Speaker 1: story about the scavenger hunt. I want to hear your
- 33:52Speaker 1: side of the story about that. He says, you guys
- 33:54Speaker 1: should that that they cheated? Did they wait?
- 33:57Speaker 16: First of all, yes, Arch did cheat, but we're not
- 34:01Speaker 16: gonna put that against him. We're not gonna put that
- 34:03Speaker 16: against him. We're just gonna say we got a tie.
- 34:05Speaker 16: We had a tie. We both got to the we
- 34:08Speaker 16: both got to the middle of the field of that
- 34:10Speaker 16: logo at the same time. And so did they cheap
- 34:14Speaker 16: cheap by using the lime scooter? Was that thing?
- 34:16Speaker 2: No?
- 34:16Speaker 16: No, no, no, no no, that's what he said about us.
- 34:19Speaker 2: Hey, all right, oh that's not cheating. Okay.
- 34:22Speaker 16: Our coach said you can't drive a car. Didn't say
- 34:25Speaker 16: anything about a line. Hey, just say nothing about no
- 34:27Speaker 16: line scooter. He said you can't drive no cars? Okay,
- 34:30Speaker 16: all right, how's your younger brother. He's doing good.
- 34:33Speaker 1: Yeah, everybody got a chance to know him and everything
- 34:37Speaker 1: you've done for him as well. So life goes on
- 34:39Speaker 1: and the process goes on, doesn't it. In helping him
- 34:42Speaker 1: and everything and everything that goes on elevating his life exactly. Hey,
- 34:47Speaker 1: it's great to see you. I appreciate your stopping about
- 34:49Speaker 1: you so much. All right, that's Colin Simmons. Uh, it's
- 34:52Speaker 1: great to hear from Colin Simmons. And what in a
- 34:55Speaker 1: great example he's been also for his younger brother, a
- 34:58Speaker 1: special needs young man. He it'd been tremendous and we
- 35:01Speaker 1: always enjoy visiting with Colin. We'll be back to wrap
- 35:04Speaker 1: up this hour here from Tampa, Florida on Sports Radio
- 35:07Speaker 1: AM thirteen under the zone of the iHeartRadio app. And
- 35:13Speaker 1: then the bonus hour began. We welcome you back to
- 35:18Speaker 1: the program here. Yeah, a five o'clock hour edition of
- 35:22Speaker 1: The Craigway Show coming away from SEC Football Media days.
- 35:26Speaker 1: Here in Tampa, Florida. You'll get a one hour edition
- 35:30Speaker 1: of Bucking BK coming up at six o'clock. My cardball
- 35:33Speaker 1: Hard has been here since the sun was barely in
- 35:36Speaker 1: the sky this morning. Let's separate it from Texas for
- 35:42Speaker 1: a moment and just tell me what's been your biggest
- 35:45Speaker 1: takeaway from here today.
- 35:47Speaker 15: Well, I think a lot of it has to do
- 35:49Speaker 15: with the coaches and the confidence. You know, we got
- 35:51Speaker 15: a chance to see Jeff Levy and hear him talk
- 35:54Speaker 15: about his squad. I think he's in a different place
- 35:56Speaker 15: than where he was a couple of years ago.
- 35:59Speaker 1: It kind of trend and some would say that's kind
- 36:01Speaker 1: of an important thing for him.
- 36:03Speaker 2: Absolutely. Absolutely.
- 36:04Speaker 15: Then you get, you know, Silverfield, a new coach over
- 36:08Speaker 15: at Arkansas, talking about his aura and how he's pretty hip.
- 36:12Speaker 1: And and trying to change a negative culture, which I
- 36:15Speaker 1: wouldn't think would be you know, Arkansas, it's that one
- 36:19Speaker 1: big you know, Division one FBS Institution of State. I mean,
- 36:22Speaker 1: I know Arkansas State is there, but obviously so much
- 36:25Speaker 1: is centered on the Razorbacks.
- 36:26Speaker 2: But he was saying today how he's having to.
- 36:29Speaker 1: Try to change minds and and and thought process. And
- 36:33Speaker 1: you know, if anybody saw the the the motion picture
- 36:38Speaker 1: Kelly's Heroes that Donald Southern said always with the negative waves, moriority,
- 36:42Speaker 1: you know, just trying to get rid of the negativity
- 36:46Speaker 1: in the culture there in that state.
- 36:48Speaker 2: Yeah, so he's trying to change that.
- 36:49Speaker 15: And then of course, you know, start talking about the
- 36:52Speaker 15: Red River rivalry and the expectations and art and his growth.
- 36:57Speaker 15: But Lane Kiffin, Lane Kiffin is someone that continues to
- 37:02Speaker 15: as Kirby says, troll people or Kelby was educated on
- 37:06Speaker 15: the word troll. But he continues to push the buttons and.
- 37:12Speaker 2: Trying to stir up this SEC. He's a pot stirrer.
- 37:16Speaker 1: Yeah, he can be that way, for sure, sometimes to
- 37:20Speaker 1: his absolute delight and sometimes to his absolute detrimental. Absolutely,
- 37:24Speaker 1: he was asked, here's a piece of sound where where
- 37:29Speaker 1: Lane Kiffin was asked about that Vanity Fair article that
- 37:32Speaker 1: came out on him not too long ago.
- 37:36Speaker 17: Hey, coach Michael Bradden from that SEC podcast. When you
- 37:40Speaker 17: were at Ole Miss you led them to the third
- 37:42Speaker 17: most wins in the conference since twenty two. You had
- 37:45Speaker 17: ten players drafted or signed his free agents in the
- 37:48Speaker 17: twenty five draft, eight players drafted or signed his free
- 37:51Speaker 17: agents in the twenty sixth class. He had a top
- 37:54Speaker 17: four portal class each of the last three portal cycles.
- 37:58Speaker 17: You were there, Jackson art first round pick. Yet in
- 38:01Speaker 17: a Vanity Fair article you said Oxford diversity hurt you
- 38:06Speaker 17: in talent acquisition. So what is it your belief that
- 38:10Speaker 17: if there was a little bit more diversity, all those
- 38:12Speaker 17: numbers I cided could have been even better.
- 38:16Speaker 2: I had a feeling that was going somewhere. You were
- 38:18Speaker 2: doing like really.
- 38:19Speaker 18: Positive stuff the whole way through.
- 38:21Speaker 19: I'm like, man, this guy's good. It sounds like it's
- 38:23Speaker 19: gould work for Jimmy Sexton. Man, you're like going a
- 38:25Speaker 19: good direction there. You know, I made a challenging decision
- 38:32Speaker 19: and change, and I think as I look back to that,
- 38:37Speaker 19: I thought I could find a way for everybody to understand.
- 38:40Speaker 19: And now as I look back later on, that was
- 38:42Speaker 19: never going to happen. And I made a decision that
- 38:46Speaker 19: I changed jobs. And as I get older and I
- 38:48Speaker 19: go through things and losing both parents, I was actually
- 38:53Speaker 19: talking to Ross Dollinger and I kind of said something
- 38:55Speaker 19: that might sound kind of funny to you, but you know,
- 38:58Speaker 19: I watched the Hulk Hogan spot and I realized and
- 39:02Speaker 19: I was like, we're all going to die, and so
- 39:07Speaker 19: some of the things that we put importance on we
- 39:09Speaker 19: worry about, and what this person says.
- 39:11Speaker 2: In that like really aren't going to matter.
- 39:13Speaker 19: And when I lost my dad, I started thinking that,
- 39:15Speaker 19: and I really started thinking when I grew up, there
- 39:17Speaker 19: were two people that I thought just wouldn't die, my
- 39:21Speaker 19: Dad and Hulk Hogan. And then I watched that special
- 39:24Speaker 19: and really, like, Hulk Hogan died too. There's no way
- 39:27Speaker 19: Hulk Hogan was ever going to not wrestle and die,
- 39:29Speaker 19: and he did. And so it just made me reflect
- 39:32Speaker 19: really on, like I can't be so concerned about little
- 39:36Speaker 19: things and what people say in this and you got
- 39:38Speaker 19: to make decisions. You got to go with them and
- 39:41Speaker 19: you do things, and you make really good decisions and
- 39:43Speaker 19: you make poor decisions. And that was a poor usage
- 39:47Speaker 19: of a term that I believe, just like many coaches
- 39:50Speaker 19: that have been therefore, was factual, but over the course
- 39:53Speaker 19: of the long interview, was bad timing and bad.
- 39:56Speaker 2: Usage of the words. So it is what it is.
- 40:00Speaker 2: Apologize when I said it, and moving on.
- 40:06Speaker 1: It's an interesting Uh, it's an interesting take on thing.
- 40:09Speaker 1: We're all gonna die. I mean it was a similar
- 40:11Speaker 1: thing if Scottie Scheffler said some kind of similar things
- 40:14Speaker 1: about that to all of this stuff about mortality.
- 40:18Speaker 2: Yeah, it's gonna happen to all of us.
- 40:19Speaker 15: I think the thing is is when he starts talking,
- 40:24Speaker 15: I think he's now gotten to a place where the
- 40:28Speaker 15: serenity of everything, you know, he's gotten to a spot
- 40:33Speaker 15: to where people are gonna always talk about you. People
- 40:35Speaker 15: are always gonna criticize you. You may not do things
- 40:39Speaker 15: the way other people would do it, but yet it's
- 40:42Speaker 15: you got to live your life and do the things
- 40:45Speaker 15: that's best for you in that particular moment. And I
- 40:48Speaker 15: think that's the moment of clarity. When he leaves and
- 40:52Speaker 15: everything's done. People aren't gonna talk about him leaving the school.
- 40:56Speaker 15: People aren't going to talk about him changing the the
- 41:01Speaker 15: area code in which he is now getting his phone
- 41:04Speaker 15: ringing at.
- 41:05Speaker 2: I think he's at that point where he's that piece.
- 41:07Speaker 15: At who he is and he's going to continue to
- 41:09Speaker 15: do what he wants to do at his own pace.
- 41:12Speaker 2: Yeah, and no doubt about it.
- 41:13Speaker 1: He's he's a guy who can go and strike people differently.
- 41:21Speaker 1: One guy who always strikes people positively is long words
- 41:24Speaker 1: outstanding left tackle Trevor Goosby and Harge and I had
- 41:28Speaker 1: a chance to sit down with him just a little
- 41:29Speaker 1: while ago and visit with Trevor to talk about how
- 41:33Speaker 1: far he's coming, what's still to happen. Certainly please to
- 41:36Speaker 1: be joined by Trevor Gooseby. Getting ready for the run
- 41:39Speaker 1: up to the season this year for you personally feel
- 41:45Speaker 1: different than the past, being a veteran. Now the fact
- 41:49Speaker 1: everybody knows this is a good football team and all
- 41:51Speaker 1: that other stuff.
- 41:52Speaker 2: Is there a different feel for you? I think absolutely.
- 41:54Speaker 16: You know, just as you you know, progress through the seasons,
- 41:59Speaker 16: you know, your old high changes sometimes. So I went
- 42:01Speaker 16: from being kind of a more of a bench player
- 42:02Speaker 16: to being a you know, possibly could start the game,
- 42:06Speaker 16: you know, like if if something happens, you can put
- 42:07Speaker 16: him into you know, being a starter, and now hopefully
- 42:10Speaker 16: you know, you know, being a leader on the team.
- 42:13Speaker 16: And so that's kind of where it feels different for
- 42:14Speaker 16: me because you know, just kind of my responsibility to
- 42:17Speaker 16: this team is a little bit different now.
- 42:19Speaker 15: So I wanted to ask you because that's a great
- 42:21Speaker 15: point and great thought process with it all. But as
- 42:24Speaker 15: you started to look and see where you were as
- 42:27Speaker 15: a young player, the work that you had to put in,
- 42:30Speaker 15: the thought process, the amount of time of study, is
- 42:35Speaker 15: that something that you have gotten You've obviously gotten better
- 42:38Speaker 15: at it, but is that something that you've passed on
- 42:40Speaker 15: to some of the younger players about Hey, when I
- 42:43Speaker 15: came in, I was at the same status as you.
- 42:45Speaker 2: But what I learned throughout this time is it the more.
- 42:48Speaker 15: You get ahead of stuff, the easier the position's going
- 42:52Speaker 15: to be.
- 42:53Speaker 10: No.
- 42:53Speaker 16: Yeah, absolutely, I'm always trying to hop out our young guy.
- 42:55Speaker 16: You know, whether it's John Turntime, you know, John Tay
- 42:57Speaker 16: Newman who he just got, you know, whether it's you know,
- 43:00Speaker 16: Jordan Coleman, Devin Coleman, those kind of guys. You know,
- 43:02Speaker 16: I'm always trying to give them little little tidbits of
- 43:04Speaker 16: stuff that I learned from you know, Kevin Banks and
- 43:06Speaker 16: Jake Majors and you know, you know older guys. I'm
- 43:09Speaker 16: always just trying to be like, hey, you know, this
- 43:11Speaker 16: is kind of what I did, you know, coming in
- 43:13Speaker 16: as a three star coming in because me personally, I
- 43:15Speaker 16: don't think I was that good in high school, to
- 43:17Speaker 16: be honest.
- 43:19Speaker 1: You know, so you were looked at us a future Trevor,
- 43:21Speaker 1: you know, definitely a working product, unfinished product.
- 43:26Speaker 16: But you know I always try and you know, you know,
- 43:28Speaker 16: share my knowledge with those guys.
- 43:30Speaker 1: So what's the most important thing you could A bit
- 43:33Speaker 1: of advice you could give a young offensive lineman starting out.
- 43:36Speaker 16: I think I think what I would say is like this,
- 43:38Speaker 16: the game is a race of maturity, you know, just
- 43:40Speaker 16: trying to become a more mature player and take things
- 43:44Speaker 16: seriously and you know, having a routine and you know,
- 43:46Speaker 16: just things like that, so just kind of trying to
- 43:48Speaker 16: become a more mature player and take things like seriously,
- 43:52Speaker 16: and also just the you know, the value of hard work,
- 43:55Speaker 16: you know, putting in the work, and you know, watching
- 43:57Speaker 16: the older guys and seeing like, hey, Like for me,
- 43:59Speaker 16: I was like, hey, Kelvin is doing this and he's
- 44:02Speaker 16: about to be a first round picks. You know, I
- 44:03Speaker 16: might as well do that too, you know, just kind
- 44:06Speaker 16: of those are the biggest things.
- 44:07Speaker 15: I would say, what were some of the biggest improvements
- 44:10Speaker 15: that you wanted to make for yourself every year? Because
- 44:13Speaker 15: obviously foot work, you were an athlete, you played basketball.
- 44:16Speaker 15: Your brothers now at the University of Texas as a
- 44:18Speaker 15: basketball player, so you've already had that working through. But
- 44:22Speaker 15: then each step of the way there's certain techniques and
- 44:25Speaker 15: things that you had to.
- 44:26Speaker 2: Get better at.
- 44:27Speaker 15: What was this year's major focus for you coming into
- 44:30Speaker 15: the season.
- 44:31Speaker 16: I think just strength overall, you know, just trying to
- 44:33Speaker 16: get stronger, you know, lower body, upper body, just kind
- 44:36Speaker 16: of all around being able to you know, anchor down
- 44:38Speaker 16: on bull rushes or remove guys off the ball. And
- 44:41Speaker 16: that's kind of what my biggest you know aspect, I
- 44:44Speaker 16: think I was working on this offseason. You know, despite
- 44:45Speaker 16: the shoulder ender injury, you know, I'm still working hard
- 44:48Speaker 16: to gain that strength and also just continue to gain
- 44:50Speaker 16: my flexibility and just be able to bend even more
- 44:53Speaker 16: because you know, I'm already a tall guy, so I
- 44:55Speaker 16: got to get down.
- 44:56Speaker 1: So how would you describe what it's been like the
- 45:00Speaker 1: I spent the chemistry with the new guys coming in,
- 45:02Speaker 1: even the latest of additions, and with the chemistry is
- 45:05Speaker 1: like Ben on the old line in the off season.
- 45:08Speaker 2: It's been phenomenal.
- 45:09Speaker 16: I was telling Connor our center the other day, like,
- 45:11Speaker 16: I think this is one of the closest groups we've
- 45:13Speaker 16: ever had, despite all the you know, the transfers, and
- 45:15Speaker 16: you know, Melvin and Lawrence and John Say and those guys,
- 45:18Speaker 16: they make it super easy. You know, They're super inviting,
- 45:20Speaker 16: and you know, you know, Lawrence isn't more of a
- 45:22Speaker 16: quieter guy, so you know, we had to we had
- 45:24Speaker 16: to bring him along. And you know Melvin, he's a
- 45:27Speaker 16: super talkative guy, you know, and we just kind of
- 45:30Speaker 16: really bonded, you know, on and off the field.
- 45:32Speaker 15: So we're talking to Trevor go and Goosby. You know,
- 45:36Speaker 15: I just mentioned your brother Austin now being on the
- 45:38Speaker 15: forty acres. Obviously, being with your family is something that
- 45:43Speaker 15: everybody has talked about at the University of Texas. But
- 45:46Speaker 15: how important has that been for you to be away
- 45:50Speaker 15: from football but have family members there just to share
- 45:53Speaker 15: things with.
- 45:54Speaker 16: It's been amazing. It's been great because you know, Austin's
- 45:56Speaker 16: seen me since I was a little kid, back when
- 45:58Speaker 16: I was chasing them around with trying to throw chairs
- 46:01Speaker 16: at him and stuff, when he would annoy the crap
- 46:03Speaker 16: out of me, you know, and uh, you know, he's
- 46:05Speaker 16: seen me from that point, and you know, I've seen
- 46:07Speaker 16: him grow up and you know, turn to the man
- 46:09Speaker 16: that he is today. And so it's just I'm grateful
- 46:11Speaker 16: to have somebody that I'm able to just talk to him,
- 46:13Speaker 16: be like, you know, I know what, You're gonna be
- 46:15Speaker 16: there for me all the time.
- 46:16Speaker 1: Do you think he is grateful to have you to
- 46:20Speaker 1: lean on, especially as he makes this transition into being
- 46:23Speaker 1: a Texas long worned, into being a college student, into
- 46:25Speaker 1: being a freshman all.
- 46:26Speaker 16: Of that stuff, I would think, So he'll never say it,
- 46:29Speaker 16: but but you know, I think he does lean on
- 46:33Speaker 16: me a good amount, you know, and just I'm always
- 46:35Speaker 16: trying to give him like you said, with the with
- 46:37Speaker 16: the young guys in the room. You know, I'm just
- 46:38Speaker 16: trying to give him two bits of you know, because
- 46:40Speaker 16: because he wants to do the business school just like
- 46:42Speaker 16: I am. And I'm like, hey, it's gonna be tough.
- 46:44Speaker 16: You know, I've been through it, and you know I'm
- 46:46Speaker 16: here to help you out, you know. And you know,
- 46:48Speaker 16: being a college athlete, bouncing out with the academics here
- 46:51Speaker 16: at the University of Texas is a hard thing to do.
- 46:53Speaker 16: I've done it the past four years. So I'm able
- 46:55Speaker 16: to help you out with this and give you this advice.
- 46:57Speaker 1: Was it possible for Arch to be even more competitive
- 47:01Speaker 1: than he's beneva? Because all I hear is about stuff
- 47:03Speaker 1: in the summer when you guys had the scavenger hunt
- 47:05Speaker 1: all that stuff. How competitive a guy he is? How
- 47:09Speaker 1: would you see how he has evolved as well as
- 47:13Speaker 1: a competitor as an individual as well as obviously as
- 47:16Speaker 1: a quarterback.
- 47:16Speaker 2: Absolutely, you know, as a competitor.
- 47:18Speaker 16: And we kind of saw this, you know, started to
- 47:20Speaker 16: begin last year of you know, him just kind of
- 47:22Speaker 16: wanting it more, and you know it showed through his play.
- 47:25Speaker 2: You know.
- 47:26Speaker 16: I just I was just talking about the Florida game
- 47:28Speaker 16: and how he was just getting hammered and then killed
- 47:32Speaker 16: and six sacks and you know, however many hits he had,
- 47:35Speaker 16: you know, and that was our fault, that was the
- 47:37Speaker 16: old line's fault. And you know he came back the
- 47:38Speaker 16: next week and you know, didn't bat night at the
- 47:40Speaker 16: old line and just took every rep and then we
- 47:42Speaker 16: went to the Ou game and you know we beat them.
- 47:45Speaker 16: So that for me was you know, that's top tier
- 47:48Speaker 16: competitor level right there. That's that's what cycle called unique competitor.
- 47:52Speaker 15: We love to talk about iron sharpening iron and obviously
- 47:56Speaker 15: mentioned Arch being here, and of course Colin Simmons. Colin
- 48:00Speaker 15: Simmons is somebody that I know you've talked about him
- 48:03Speaker 15: a bit about how hard he works and what this
- 48:06Speaker 15: is all about. But when you going against each other
- 48:09Speaker 15: every single day, does he coach you and say, hey,
- 48:12Speaker 15: this is what I saw when you're set up that
- 48:14Speaker 15: made me think I could do this, and you doing
- 48:16Speaker 15: the same thing for him vice versa.
- 48:18Speaker 16: Yeah, we talk every every time we practice. I'm like,
- 48:21Speaker 16: all right, console, so what were you trying to do
- 48:23Speaker 16: here with this movie? He'll come up to me and
- 48:24Speaker 16: be like all right, So what are you trying to
- 48:25Speaker 16: do with your hands here, And so you know, we're
- 48:28Speaker 16: just kind of giving each other more information, you know,
- 48:30Speaker 16: about the other positions. So when it does come time
- 48:32Speaker 16: to play the game, you know, we're both prepped and
- 48:34Speaker 16: we're both you know, experienced and what the other guy
- 48:37Speaker 16: is going to do, Like you said, iron sharpening and
- 48:39Speaker 16: iron like Colin Simmons is, you know, one of the
- 48:41Speaker 16: best defensive players in the country, and so being able
- 48:44Speaker 16: to go against him and you know, you know, Lance
- 48:46Speaker 16: Jackson and Xena and Moslo and those kind of guys
- 48:48Speaker 16: at the edge position. You know, I'm going against the
- 48:51Speaker 16: best of the best every day and so that don't
- 48:53Speaker 16: really prepare me for preparing me for every game that
- 48:55Speaker 16: you know is coming up.
- 48:56Speaker 1: So final thing here, what are you looking forward to
- 49:02Speaker 1: for this twenty to twenty six college football season?
- 49:04Speaker 16: I think just playing with the guys, you know, just
- 49:06Speaker 16: playing with this team, and you know, not not for
- 49:09Speaker 16: the you know, on paper we're a really good team,
- 49:11Speaker 16: but just playing with the caliber of guys that we have,
- 49:13Speaker 16: in the caliber of men that we have, you know,
- 49:15Speaker 16: just kind of all over the board offense, defense, even
- 49:18Speaker 16: you know, the coaches, you know, they're really bringing that
- 49:20Speaker 16: energy and you know, they bring that culture together and
- 49:23Speaker 16: just being able to play with those guys and you know,
- 49:25Speaker 16: I guess lay my life on the line for those guys.
- 49:27Speaker 2: It means a lot to me. It means everything. Before
- 49:29Speaker 2: we let you go, we wanted to ask you.
- 49:31Speaker 15: Obviously you weren't a pendant today and it says every
- 49:34Speaker 15: fifteen minutes. You obviously just had your football camp about
- 49:39Speaker 15: when as a kid you had open heart surgery, and
- 49:41Speaker 15: that's something that a lot of people have no idea about.
- 49:45Speaker 15: Coach Sark obviously had the same thing. You and him
- 49:48Speaker 15: have had a chance to bond over that. But what
- 49:51Speaker 15: is it about that that really stands out to you
- 49:54Speaker 15: that can help somebody else.
- 49:56Speaker 16: I think for me, just the experience and how much
- 49:58Speaker 16: that that had, you know, took a to on me,
- 50:00Speaker 16: and just kind of I don't feel I feel like it's
- 50:02Speaker 16: not talked about enough. You know, congenital heart disease isn't
- 50:05Speaker 16: you know, it isn't one of the top talked about,
- 50:08Speaker 16: you know, awareness programs in the country, And so I
- 50:11Speaker 16: just want to, you know, be a platform to kids
- 50:13Speaker 16: that you know are going through that, and you know
- 50:15Speaker 16: that they asked somebody to look, you know, up to
- 50:17Speaker 16: and look look towards to to find that confidence and
- 50:20Speaker 16: to find you know that I guess that, uh, that
- 50:22Speaker 16: guidance to.
- 50:23Speaker 2: Get through it.
- 50:24Speaker 1: So we appreciate the time. We know it's a busy
- 50:26Speaker 1: time for you. Looking forward to seeing you on the
- 50:28Speaker 1: practice field and seeing you in the games. Thanks Trevor,
- 50:29Speaker 1: Thank you guys so much. I appreciate hook them.
- 50:31Speaker 2: Hook them. That's Trevor Gooseby.
- 50:33Speaker 1: Yeah, great conversation with him as well, and certainly the
- 50:37Speaker 1: leader of that offensive front. Up next, we're going to

- 55:58Speaker 1: Special five o'clock hour edition of the program from SEC
- 56:02Speaker 1: Football Media Days here in Tampa. Part I mentioned that
- 56:07Speaker 1: my cardball hards have been here from the start, So
- 56:09Speaker 1: too has been Cameron Parker who has cobbled everything together
- 56:17Speaker 1: and also very definitely and quickly transitioned us into an
- 56:22Speaker 1: alternative mode of broadcast when all of a sudden the
- 56:26Speaker 1: primary means here supplied by the folks was no longer available.
- 56:31Speaker 2: Is that the best way to describe that.
- 56:33Speaker 30: Yeah, I think they're telling us like, hey, it's time
- 56:35Speaker 30: to go home now.
- 56:36Speaker 1: And we know you guys just came in yesterday and
- 56:38Speaker 1: are doing today the last day. But you know most
- 56:41Speaker 1: of the other people that got here on Monday or
- 56:43Speaker 1: Sunday or whatever and been there, Yeah, you guys need
- 56:46Speaker 1: to leave or something like that. But you know what
- 56:48Speaker 1: I will tell you this. I have been to a
- 56:53Speaker 1: football media days every year except one. I think it
- 56:57Speaker 1: was nineteen ninety eight eat Uh no, it was ninety
- 57:01Speaker 1: nine when my when my youngest was born, and uh
- 57:07Speaker 1: and other than that, going all the way back to
- 57:09Speaker 1: Southwest Conference Days, I was usually involved with an afternoon show,
- 57:14Speaker 1: either hosting or co hosting or whatever. And so going
- 57:19Speaker 1: from the mid nineties all the year, I can tell
- 57:21Speaker 1: you every single year when he gets to this time
- 57:24Speaker 1: of the day, what you're seeing is the deal there's
- 57:27Speaker 1: always a tear down. There's always there, guy's pulling up
- 57:29Speaker 1: tape a few minutes ago to pull up ethernet lines.
- 57:31Speaker 2: There's there's always that.
- 57:32Speaker 1: It's always that gentle nudge like, hey, can you guys
- 57:35Speaker 1: wrap it up and get the hell out of here.
- 57:36Speaker 18: Yeah.
- 57:36Speaker 30: It's like the Villagio casino floor at four am, when
- 57:39Speaker 30: they're vacuuming underneath the blackjack table. It's like, Okay, maybe
- 57:42Speaker 30: maybe it's you know, it's time, it's time to go.
- 57:46Speaker 1: So you sat at the blackjack table at the.
- 57:52Speaker 2: I've just heard about it.
- 57:53Speaker 1: Okay, I heard about Okay, you know a lot of
- 57:59Speaker 1: the guys in after we after we air this interview,
- 58:04Speaker 1: I'll get your follow up comments on this. But a
- 58:06Speaker 1: lot of the guys who come here, the student athletes,
- 58:10Speaker 1: some of them are wide eyed, and some of them
- 58:12Speaker 1: have been there, don't really know. And then the other
- 58:14Speaker 1: ones just would rather not even be here. One thing
- 58:19Speaker 1: that was kind of fun, and you'll hear this in
- 58:21Speaker 1: this conversation with Arch Manning is he quickly adjusted to
- 58:29Speaker 1: having fun here. And he'll tell you why. But when
- 58:32Speaker 1: we walked up and we had a certain amount of
- 58:35Speaker 1: time that that John Biaco and his staff set aside
- 58:38Speaker 1: for us to be able to come in and have
- 58:39Speaker 1: a conversation, and I had one with him, and so
- 58:41Speaker 1: did so did Harge. So that'll be coming on the
- 58:45Speaker 1: on the morning kickoff around the corner. But when we
- 58:49Speaker 1: appeared on the scene in the room, there were I
- 58:56Speaker 1: think four young ladies who were doing TikTok things of
- 59:00Speaker 1: the sec and all we could see was art making
- 59:05Speaker 1: these really bizarre facial expressions, stuff you probably would not
- 59:11Speaker 1: normally see out of the long Arts quarterback. So that
- 59:14Speaker 1: was that's gonna be the leadoff question. When I sat
- 59:16Speaker 1: down just a little while ago it visited with long
- 59:19Speaker 1: Warts quarterback arts Manny, the first thing I have to
- 59:22Speaker 1: ask is we walk up and there's four young ladies
- 59:25Speaker 1: having you make all kinds of weird faces.
- 59:27Speaker 2: What was that all about?
- 59:29Speaker 18: They were showing me pictures of either me paying Eli
- 59:32Speaker 18: and having me recreate the pictures. I hope that never
- 59:34Speaker 18: gets posted. It's pretty embarrassing, but that was what we
- 59:38Speaker 18: were doing.
- 59:38Speaker 2: It was a TikTok. Is it difficult? Okay? All right?
- 59:40Speaker 1: So is it is it difficult to create an emotional
- 59:43Speaker 1: of facial expression on the spur of the moment?
- 59:46Speaker 18: Really coming on the spot there. It was a little
- 59:48Speaker 18: bit that was probably the most challenging thing I've done
- 59:49Speaker 18: all day.
- 59:51Speaker 1: I was going to ask you, with all of this
- 59:52Speaker 1: stuff going on, how much or is there much of
- 59:56Speaker 1: it that you actually even enjoyed.
- 59:59Speaker 2: I was kind of I'm not gonna lie. I was
- 1:00:00Speaker 2: kind of dreading coming to this.
- 1:00:02Speaker 18: But I talked to my dad, and I talked to
- 1:00:05Speaker 18: one of our strength coaches actually, and they're like, make
- 1:00:07Speaker 18: the most out of it, have some fun. And you know,
- 1:00:09Speaker 18: you only get to do this.
- 1:00:10Speaker 2: This is your second time.
- 1:00:11Speaker 18: You're very fortunate enough to do this, and I've made
- 1:00:13Speaker 18: the most of it, and I had some fun today.
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: Do you In the past, You've been asked quite a
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: bit about how much you rely on visiting with your dad,
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: visiting with your granddad, your uncle's about going through what
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: you go through as a quarterback. But does that also
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: it sounds like encompass the other things that surround it,
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: not just what you have to.
- 1:00:33Speaker 2: Do on the practice field and in the game.
- 1:00:35Speaker 18: Yeah, I'd say more so, I rely mostly on my
- 1:00:37Speaker 18: coaches and teammates and support staff in Texas to focus
- 1:00:43Speaker 18: on football. I think more so, I'm talking to my
- 1:00:45Speaker 18: dad and grandfather and uncles on stuff outside of football
- 1:00:47Speaker 18: and handling, you know, different situations.
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: So many people are talking about you, quote unquote being tough,
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: for getting tough, for all that other kind of stuff.
- 1:00:56Speaker 18: You feel tougher. I mean, you got to be tough
- 1:01:00Speaker 18: to be a quarterback. And I think every quarterback, especially
- 1:01:03Speaker 18: in this conference, is tough and you got to prove
- 1:01:05Speaker 18: that every week.
- 1:01:06Speaker 2: Do you be's saying I'm tough? Right? Do you do?
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: You do you feel like even physically in addition to
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: the mental toughness that you've made strides as well.
- 1:01:17Speaker 18: I would say you got to grow up quick, especially
- 1:01:20Speaker 18: in the SEC and not playing well and having to
- 1:01:23Speaker 18: you knowwithstand that you got to grow up quick, and
- 1:01:26Speaker 18: you know, grow some scars. And I think I'm gonna
- 1:01:30Speaker 18: take those scars with me and go on to next
- 1:01:32Speaker 18: year and hopefully we have a good year.
- 1:01:33Speaker 2: Where did you grow the most?
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: And that everybody points to the second half of the
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: season with the way everything went for you. Did you
- 1:01:40Speaker 1: did you feel the mental and emotional as well as
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: the physical growth down the stretch?
- 1:01:44Speaker 18: Yeah, I'd say so. I don't know if there was
- 1:01:45Speaker 18: a specific time, but I think looking back, I definitely
- 1:01:48Speaker 18: grew up there and you know, played a little more
- 1:01:51Speaker 18: free and let the game come to me.
- 1:01:52Speaker 2: How excited are you and how good is it?
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: Men? Working with the newer players as well as the
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: returning player there, your receivers, you're receiving targets, your offensive line,
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: your two new running backs, all of that.
- 1:02:05Speaker 18: It's been really exciting. Those guys that came in from
- 1:02:08Speaker 18: the portal or even the freshman it's been a smooth
- 1:02:11Speaker 18: transition for them. The guys returning from last year have
- 1:02:14Speaker 18: all grown up into leadership roles. So we're excited about
- 1:02:17Speaker 18: this group. We just got to take a day by
- 1:02:19Speaker 18: day and I'm excited.
- 1:02:22Speaker 2: Tell everybody about this scavenger hunt that Sark was talking about.
- 1:02:25Speaker 18: We did a scavenger hunt yesterday.
- 1:02:28Speaker 2: It was fun.
- 1:02:29Speaker 18: I think the winners they haven't announced it yet, or
- 1:02:31Speaker 18: maybe they did when.
- 1:02:32Speaker 2: We were here.
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: I heard it was a debate between you and the
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: debate between our two teams.
- 1:02:37Speaker 18: Allegedly they said our team cheated. But we went around
- 1:02:39Speaker 18: campus and went around campus and different spots, which is
- 1:02:44Speaker 18: unique because some of the guys hadn't even seen campus yet.
- 1:02:46Speaker 18: They're new or online school, so all around campus and
- 1:02:51Speaker 18: you had to race the longhorn and take a picture
- 1:02:53Speaker 18: of your group towards the end, and we were both
- 1:02:54Speaker 18: racing and apparently we sent the picture at the same time.
- 1:02:58Speaker 18: So I don't know how they're gonna choose a winner.
- 1:02:59Speaker 18: Do you cheat free dinner?
- 1:03:01Speaker 16: Though?
- 1:03:01Speaker 1: Oh okay, well, so how do you cheat on a
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: scavenger hunt?
- 1:03:04Speaker 18: Because they said, so everyone has to be at each
- 1:03:08Speaker 18: you know, you get clues and you get to go
- 1:03:09Speaker 18: to each place, and everyone has to take a picture
- 1:03:12Speaker 18: of everyone in your group.
- 1:03:13Speaker 2: And we had two.
- 1:03:14Speaker 18: Guys in our group, Lance Jackson and Eric Garza. Not
- 1:03:18Speaker 18: to call them out, they went on a Lime scooter
- 1:03:21Speaker 18: for the first one, which didn't matter at all because
- 1:03:23Speaker 18: we all still had to walk there. So we didn't cheat.
- 1:03:26Speaker 18: We just, you know, we're had a competitive advantage.
- 1:03:29Speaker 1: Someone say, is this also examples of how the team
- 1:03:33Speaker 1: grows closer together before we actually even get on the
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: practice field for fall camp workout hundred percent.
- 1:03:38Speaker 18: We're also all going to hang out tomorrow night, so
- 1:03:40Speaker 18: we're trying to build, especially with having a bunch of
- 1:03:43Speaker 18: new guys. I feel like we've done a good job
- 1:03:45Speaker 18: of building that camaraderie and culture.
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: What are you looking for to most once you get
- 1:03:50Speaker 1: into practice and headed toward the start of the season.
- 1:03:53Speaker 18: Yeah, I like game planning each week and practicing for opponents.
- 1:03:57Speaker 18: Right now, we're just going against our defense, so once
- 1:03:58Speaker 18: we get into opponent plays, we're going to attack that.
- 1:04:01Speaker 18: And you know, obviously you get excited for Saturdays.
- 1:04:04Speaker 2: Got to ask you about the TV commercial or the
- 1:04:07Speaker 2: commercial with your dad. How much fun was that to do?
- 1:04:09Speaker 18: Yeah, I've done a lot with him this offseason. He
- 1:04:13Speaker 18: makes it easy. I don't like doing those things and
- 1:04:15Speaker 18: he makes it easy, and so I'm glad I get
- 1:04:17Speaker 18: to do.
- 1:04:17Speaker 2: It with him.
- 1:04:18Speaker 18: He's a piece of work, So we had some fun.
- 1:04:20Speaker 2: He looks very natural at it.
- 1:04:22Speaker 1: I mean, is it Does it feel like it's something
- 1:04:24Speaker 1: that he tries to help you discover?
- 1:04:25Speaker 2: Yeah? Probably so.
- 1:04:26Speaker 18: I'm not really big in that field, but he's pretty
- 1:04:29Speaker 18: good at it.
- 1:04:30Speaker 2: Thanks appreciate it. Thank you. In case you haven't seen it,
- 1:04:34Speaker 2: and Cam you've seen it.
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: Those are the commercials he's done with his dad, raising
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: Kanes is won. The one one they're on the golf
- 1:04:41Speaker 1: course was the one I was referring to. Is that
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: the one with the sunglasses or the eyebor Parker orb
- 1:04:47Speaker 1: Park with a Warbig Parker. Those are hilarious that he's
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: done with his dad, but he said he's spent a
- 1:04:54Speaker 1: lot of summer with him about that. But I think
- 1:04:57Speaker 1: the general layer, not just from that conversation but observing
- 1:05:00Speaker 1: him and the other media realms that he had to
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: enter today, is a more confident, relaxed, focused.
- 1:05:11Speaker 2: You know, just generally.
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: More comfortable quarterback than he was a year ago when
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: he was here.
- 1:05:19Speaker 2: Yeah, he seemed more at ease today.
- 1:05:21Speaker 30: And I remember last season, Craig, when we were in
- 1:05:24Speaker 30: Atlanta for the twenty twenty five SEC media days and
- 1:05:28Speaker 30: we sat down with him in my card. Even just
- 1:05:31Speaker 30: him walking in, you know, it was you know, like
- 1:05:33Speaker 30: the first day of school. You're looking around and like,
- 1:05:35Speaker 30: look at all these people here. You could kind of
- 1:05:36Speaker 30: tell he was not used to it. You know, I
- 1:05:39Speaker 30: think the college football world in the sports world was
- 1:05:43Speaker 30: ready for Arch Manning, but I don't think Arch was
- 1:05:46Speaker 30: ready for that just yet.
- 1:05:48Speaker 2: And it's taken.
- 1:05:49Speaker 30: Him probably about you know, two three years in Austin
- 1:05:53Speaker 30: getting used to being how popular he is. The exposure
- 1:05:56Speaker 30: that he's gotten from you know, nil deals in commercial
- 1:06:00Speaker 30: in just the outside media, and you know, you have
- 1:06:02Speaker 30: Jordan Rodgers and steven A Smith talking about you when
- 1:06:06Speaker 30: steven A probably doesn't know the name of Oklahoma's quarterback,
- 1:06:08Speaker 30: but he knows arch Manning's name. Right, Everyone knows arch
- 1:06:11Speaker 30: Manning's name, And I think it's taken him some time
- 1:06:13Speaker 30: to get.
- 1:06:13Speaker 2: Used to that, Craig.
- 1:06:14Speaker 30: And you know, I wonder maybe if that maybe bled
- 1:06:17Speaker 30: into his football at first too, because he didn't seem
- 1:06:21Speaker 30: very comfortable on the football field or outside of it.
- 1:06:23Speaker 30: But then you know, over the course of the season,
- 1:06:26Speaker 30: he became more and more of a good quarterback, and
- 1:06:29Speaker 30: you know, you saw him grow up in the football field,
- 1:06:31Speaker 30: and what we saw against Michigan and the Citrus Bowl,
- 1:06:33Speaker 30: I think gave a lot of Texas fans a lot
- 1:06:35Speaker 30: of confidence going into this season. And I think today
- 1:06:38Speaker 30: Craig he looked like a confident quarterback, A confident he's.
- 1:06:43Speaker 2: Not a kid anymore. You look like he's a grown Yeah.
- 1:06:45Speaker 5: A team later who was here, and you.
- 1:06:47Speaker 30: Know he said at the beginning of the interview where like,
- 1:06:49Speaker 30: you know, he was kind of dreading it, and then
- 1:06:50Speaker 30: his dad and some of the coaching staff told him, like, hey,
- 1:06:54Speaker 30: just enjoy it. And I think we saw that out
- 1:06:56Speaker 30: of him today.
- 1:06:57Speaker 2: No doubt about it.
- 1:06:59Speaker 1: Coming up next my conversation with the head coach, the
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: one on one with sark when we continue from SEC
- 1:07:04Speaker 1: media days on thirteen under the Zone, continuing here on
- 1:07:16Speaker 1: this Thursday afternoon here in Tampa, Florida. Last hour we
- 1:07:22Speaker 1: brought to the press conference with Long Orange head coach
- 1:07:25Speaker 1: Steve Sarkisian that was earlier today, and we've had the
- 1:07:29Speaker 1: one on one conversations just aired with Arch Manning, also
- 1:07:34Speaker 1: Mike Hardball, Hearts and I are visiting whichever gooseby my
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: one on one with Colin Simmons, and now sit down
- 1:07:41Speaker 1: with Long Orts head coach Steve Sarkishan. Given that you've
- 1:07:44Speaker 1: been in this long enough to where very little, if
- 1:07:46Speaker 1: anything surprises you anymore, is it nevertheless intriguing that a
- 1:07:51Speaker 1: year ago everybody's asking you about Arch getting ready to
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: be the starter and coming off playing in the conference
- 1:07:56Speaker 1: championship to this year first question out of the box
- 1:07:59Speaker 1: is about an offensive lineman trying to go through the
- 1:08:02Speaker 1: legal system.
- 1:08:03Speaker 2: To get a fifth year.
- 1:08:04Speaker 5: You know, it's funny.
- 1:08:05Speaker 4: I think that that's just fitting in the state of
- 1:08:09Speaker 4: college athletics and college football right now. The fact that
- 1:08:13Speaker 4: my first question out of the box is about a
- 1:08:17Speaker 4: temporary restraining order for Cole Hudson to try to get
- 1:08:21Speaker 4: a fifth year to play for US one more season.
- 1:08:25Speaker 4: But that's where we're at. That's where we're at today,
- 1:08:27Speaker 4: and so was it surprising yes, But in the same
- 1:08:31Speaker 4: breath no, because that's just where we're at. Like I,
- 1:08:34Speaker 4: you know, as I'm prepping for today, you know, obviously
- 1:08:38Speaker 4: make a lot of notes, and you want to talk
- 1:08:41Speaker 4: about our team and the season and our staff and
- 1:08:43Speaker 4: the support we have and all the great things. And
- 1:08:46Speaker 4: in my mind, I'm thinking, I'm checking with John Bionco.
- 1:08:49Speaker 4: I'm like, Hey, I need answers to this new bill.
- 1:08:53Speaker 4: I need answers to Commissioner Sinkie talking about the potential breakaway.
- 1:08:57Speaker 4: I need answers to Cole Hudson and this lawsuit. Like,
- 1:09:01Speaker 4: think about that. You know, we're going into a season.
- 1:09:03Speaker 4: We're forty four days away from our opener, and I'm
- 1:09:05Speaker 4: worried about lawsuits and a bill at Congress and all
- 1:09:10Speaker 4: sorts of stuff that really doesn't matter to what we're.
- 1:09:12Speaker 5: Going to do this fall.
- 1:09:13Speaker 1: Does it make it any more challenging for you and
- 1:09:17Speaker 1: the staff to keep everybody on task and all that,
- 1:09:20Speaker 1: given that there's all this other outside stuff. There's outside
- 1:09:23Speaker 1: stuff every year, but there seems to be more and
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: more every year.
- 1:09:25Speaker 4: It's I don't think so, you know, I think that
- 1:09:28Speaker 4: starts with me, Like like any organization, you know, I
- 1:09:31Speaker 4: think when the leader has an approach and a mindset
- 1:09:34Speaker 4: to the way they go about their business, I think
- 1:09:36Speaker 4: it's still easier for everybody else to follow suit. I
- 1:09:39Speaker 4: am not a big complainer. I'm not a big worrier
- 1:09:42Speaker 4: about things that are out of my control. I control
- 1:09:44Speaker 4: what I can control. I try to be where my
- 1:09:46Speaker 4: feed are, and I try to focus on our people
- 1:09:49Speaker 4: and our building, whether it's staff, players, coaching staff, whatever
- 1:09:52Speaker 4: that looks like. And so you know, this is as
- 1:09:56Speaker 4: they you know, coach Spurrier said, this is talking season
- 1:09:59Speaker 4: and and this is the time for all that stuff.
- 1:10:03Speaker 4: I think when we when we fast forward here about
- 1:10:05Speaker 4: a week and a half two weeks, when training camp begins,
- 1:10:08Speaker 4: I think a lot of.
- 1:10:08Speaker 5: The focus is going to shift back to football.
- 1:10:11Speaker 4: And but you know, this is the time, it's talking season,
- 1:10:14Speaker 4: and and everybody's writing their articles and doing their podcasts
- 1:10:17Speaker 4: and their radio shows and their TV shows, and and
- 1:10:20Speaker 4: they're looking for content right, and so that's understandable, but
- 1:10:24Speaker 4: it's it's not as difficult for me.
- 1:10:26Speaker 5: Like I like being with our players. I like talking
- 1:10:29Speaker 5: to our players.
- 1:10:29Speaker 4: I like find out their interests, what they're doing with,
- 1:10:32Speaker 4: what they got going on, and and and understanding Kevin
- 1:10:35Speaker 4: el type, he's a really good chairman of the board.
- 1:10:38Speaker 4: He's an attorney. He's gonna he's gonna know what he's doing.
- 1:10:41Speaker 4: Jim Davis new new president, he's an attorney, knows what
- 1:10:44Speaker 4: he's doing.
- 1:10:45Speaker 2: CDC.
- 1:10:46Speaker 4: One of the smarter people I've ever been around, might
- 1:10:49Speaker 4: be an attorney in the kangaroo court, you know.
- 1:10:51Speaker 5: I I don't know somewhere in there.
- 1:10:53Speaker 4: But at the end of the day, like we've got
- 1:10:55Speaker 4: great leaders that are gonna worry about that stuff.
- 1:10:57Speaker 5: When the time comes they want my opinion, they'll ask.
- 1:11:00Speaker 2: What has impressed you most about what you've.
- 1:11:05Speaker 1: Learned and seen from your guys in the offseason, in
- 1:11:07Speaker 1: the run up to building up right before the start
- 1:11:09Speaker 1: of fall camp.
- 1:11:10Speaker 4: The biggest thing is their ability to come together as
- 1:11:15Speaker 4: a team with so many new faces. You know that
- 1:11:18Speaker 4: that this idea with the amount of freshmen and transfers
- 1:11:21Speaker 4: bigger than we've ever had. I've been so impressed this
- 1:11:26Speaker 4: This team is closer than than than you know, it's
- 1:11:30Speaker 4: as closer, closer than any team we've had. And that's
- 1:11:33Speaker 4: a credit to Arch and Colin and Trevor and Jelanni
- 1:11:36Speaker 4: and Hero and uh Brandon Baker and Ryan Wingo and
- 1:11:40Speaker 4: all these guys Ty Anthony Smith who have been in
- 1:11:42Speaker 4: the program out of high school. But it's also a
- 1:11:45Speaker 4: credit to Raschien Biles, Bau Mascow, Cam Coleman, Raleik Brown,
- 1:11:51Speaker 4: Hollywood Smothers, Michael Wasson, Is Melvins, and I their ability
- 1:11:55Speaker 4: to come in and say, hey, I'm gonna I'm gonna
- 1:11:59Speaker 4: adjust to you and to that program because this is
- 1:12:03Speaker 4: what I chose to come and do. And those guys
- 1:12:06Speaker 4: and I'm know I'm leaving a few out, but those
- 1:12:08Speaker 4: guys have done a great job of believing in the
- 1:12:11Speaker 4: program and allowing those leaders to lead. And then a
- 1:12:15Speaker 4: credit to the freshman class. You know, I think you
- 1:12:17Speaker 4: know d bel Jermaine Bishop, those guys been great leaders
- 1:12:20Speaker 4: to say, hey, these guys know what they're doing, We're
- 1:12:22Speaker 4: gonna go follow suit. And so it's it's created a
- 1:12:25Speaker 4: locker room and a team that's very close right now
- 1:12:27Speaker 4: we were just talking about on the plane, you know,
- 1:12:30Speaker 4: the player, you know, Arch was talking about it. I mean,
- 1:12:32Speaker 4: we did a scavenger hunt yesterday, a competitive scavenger hunting.
- 1:12:35Speaker 4: He's like, man, that was awesome, but it's so much
- 1:12:37Speaker 4: fun and calling He and Collins teams were the ones
- 1:12:39Speaker 4: at the end fighting over who won and who like
- 1:12:43Speaker 4: we we'ven't.
- 1:12:44Speaker 5: Done that before, you know.
- 1:12:45Speaker 4: Then, and on a Wednesday and it's one hundred degrees
- 1:12:48Speaker 4: in Austin and they're running around the forty acres and
- 1:12:50Speaker 4: doing activities together. So it's that's what excites me about
- 1:12:54Speaker 4: this team, and that's what makes this team really cool
- 1:12:56Speaker 4: to me.
- 1:12:57Speaker 1: Is that also a byproduct of what you've spoken about
- 1:13:00Speaker 1: in the past about moving forward the culture building earlier
- 1:13:05Speaker 1: then getting on well into the summer.
- 1:13:06Speaker 4: Yeah, I think to your point. You know, we started
- 1:13:08Speaker 4: doing our culture building stuff in February this year, when
- 1:13:11Speaker 4: you know traditionally we don't start that until June. By
- 1:13:15Speaker 4: doing that, I think that that did speed up the
- 1:13:18Speaker 4: process where we could do activities like this and the
- 1:13:21Speaker 4: players feel comfortable with one another to do it. They
- 1:13:23Speaker 4: weren't still learning and figuring each other out. They've already
- 1:13:26Speaker 4: gotten to know one another really well and on a
- 1:13:28Speaker 4: very intimate setting. And so I've been pleased with all
- 1:13:32Speaker 4: of that. You know, you know I always say I
- 1:13:35Speaker 4: got asked this question earlier, Like, you know, is this
- 1:13:37Speaker 4: your most talented roster? Arguably? Right, we'll find out. But
- 1:13:41Speaker 4: talent only gets you so far. You know, your ability
- 1:13:44Speaker 4: to play as a team, your ability to be your
- 1:13:46Speaker 4: best when your best is needed, how we respond to adversity,
- 1:13:49Speaker 4: the type of grit we have as a team, our
- 1:13:51Speaker 4: ability to respond when injuries occur. All those things are
- 1:13:54Speaker 4: what ultimately is going to define our season. Talent gets
- 1:13:57Speaker 4: us so far, but things like this, the culture, that
- 1:14:00Speaker 4: connectivity that our guys have.
- 1:14:01Speaker 5: Uh, that's a great sign for us.
- 1:14:03Speaker 1: Final thing here, what will you look for as you
- 1:14:06Speaker 1: get into fall camp, right out of the gate? The
- 1:14:08Speaker 1: questions that might roll through your mind before everything gets
- 1:14:12Speaker 1: into the full meat and potatoes.
- 1:14:14Speaker 4: Well I think this, you know, I'm always the first
- 1:14:16Speaker 4: couple of days. I'm always looking at, you know, the
- 1:14:19Speaker 4: cramping of our players.
- 1:14:20Speaker 5: If truthfully like.
- 1:14:22Speaker 4: It's hot, as we know, we have to we have
- 1:14:25Speaker 4: to put our guys through the grinder, uh, to get
- 1:14:28Speaker 4: ready for a season. But being mindful of our health
- 1:14:31Speaker 4: and the cramping. We've gotten better every year, and I'm
- 1:14:34Speaker 4: always trying to find more ways to expose them to
- 1:14:38Speaker 4: the heat, but come out of those days even healthier
- 1:14:41Speaker 4: than than we did in the previous year. So that's
- 1:14:43Speaker 4: always something that I look at, you know, I look
- 1:14:46Speaker 4: at communication, you know, and and and do I hear
- 1:14:49Speaker 4: us at practice?
- 1:14:50Speaker 5: Do I hear the communication in the back end? We
- 1:14:52Speaker 5: got a new defense, you.
- 1:14:53Speaker 4: Know, how's Jalani and Grayson and Derek Williams and everybody
- 1:14:56Speaker 4: talking with one another.
- 1:14:59Speaker 5: Our ability to a just on the move like it
- 1:15:02Speaker 5: would be in game.
- 1:15:03Speaker 4: You know, if we're not handling a certain stump by
- 1:15:05Speaker 4: the defense, can the offensive line make the adjustment mid practice?
- 1:15:09Speaker 4: Because that's a great sign for what the season could
- 1:15:11Speaker 4: look forward to, you know, because we're going to see
- 1:15:13Speaker 4: a bunch of things in season that we didn't prepare for,
- 1:15:16Speaker 4: and our ability to adjust to those things is really important.
- 1:15:18Speaker 2: Always great to see you down here. Appreciate it. Thanks Greg.
- 1:15:21Speaker 1: Welcome at his LONGRNES Head coach Steve Sarkishan our annuals
- 1:15:25Speaker 1: sit down at media Days. We'll be back to wrap
- 1:15:28Speaker 1: up the program from here in Tampa. I'm thirteen under
- 1:15:31Speaker 1: the zone
