- 0:05Speaker 1: Hey, this is Annie. And Samantha.
- 0:07Speaker 2: And welcome to Stuff I Never Told You, a production
- 0:08Speaker 2: of iHeartRadio. And today we are bringing back another fiction
- 0:21Speaker 2: episode for you. I was thinking about this one because,
- 0:27Speaker 2: as mentioned in our upcoming.
- 0:32Speaker 1: A recap on Dragon Con.
- 0:34Speaker 2: We're recording a lot of stuff right now, so the
- 0:36Speaker 2: schedule's a little mess. But there were a lot of
- 0:39Speaker 2: run-ins with exes at Dragon Con this year, which Dragon
- 0:43Speaker 2: Con is a big nerd convention that happens in Atlanta.
- 0:47Speaker 2: And this fiction is about losing somebody and kind of
- 0:55Speaker 2: the grief of, like, them being in your social media
- 1:00Speaker 2: are like not being able to escape them in your
- 1:03Speaker 2: life somehow, or just having all these like reminders of them.
- 1:07Speaker 2: And I was thinking about this too, in terms of
- 1:11Speaker 2: how technology has advanced so much since I wrote this. And,
- 1:16Speaker 2: you know, we have our technology.
- 1:19Speaker 1: Movie series with Bridget. We've already picked out the next movie.
- 1:23Speaker 1: I was watching the trailer for artificial today.
- 1:25Speaker 2: Um, And just how that might look now that some
- 1:31Speaker 2: of that stuff has gotten turbocharged. But also, you know,
- 1:36Speaker 2: the protagonist in this story is not meant to be...
- 1:40Speaker 2: He's just sad.
- 1:41Speaker 1: He's not meant to be a bad guy or anything
- 1:44Speaker 1: like that. But if you did write this in a
- 1:49Speaker 1: way where he was a bad guy, all the ways....
- 1:54Speaker 2: I just got to thinking, like, after somebody breaks up,
- 1:57Speaker 2: do people interact with AI and have it maybe be
- 2:01Speaker 2: their ex? Like, try to find a way to interact
- 2:04Speaker 2: with it like that. Or when we're talking about flock
- 2:07Speaker 2: cameras and what we see, how that's being used for
- 2:09Speaker 2: people to stalk their exes. And the way technology is
- 2:13Speaker 2: used like that, it's just been on my mind. A
- 2:18Speaker 2: little update, perhaps.
- 2:22Speaker 1: Yeah. But please enjoy this classic episode. Hey, this is Annie.
- 2:33Speaker 1: And Samantha.
- 2:34Speaker 2: And welcome to Stuff I've Never Told You, a production
- 2:36Speaker 2: of iHeartRadio. It is time for another edition of Sminty Fiction. Yeah.
- 2:50Speaker 2: As always, do not panic if this is not your thing.
- 2:54Speaker 2: Just something we're doing once a month or so, where
- 2:56Speaker 2: we do a dramatic reading.
- 2:58Speaker 1: Yes. I like to think it's a dramatic reading. Absolutely.
- 3:02Speaker 2: With the soundscaping of our amazing super producer, Christina, who
- 3:07Speaker 2: deserves all the recognition and props because she makes these
- 3:11Speaker 2: sound so good.
- 3:11Speaker 1: She kills it. She really, really does. Yes, in a
- 3:15Speaker 1: good way.
- 3:16Speaker 2: And this one has no real trigger warning, but it's
- 3:20Speaker 2: a little sad, I guess. So if you're tender emotionally,
- 3:24Speaker 2: for whatever reason, maybe not for you. I think it
- 3:27Speaker 2: will be fine. I think it's kind of goofy, honestly.
- 3:30Speaker 1: But, you know.
- 3:31Speaker 2: And as always, a disclaimer, I wrote this for an
- 3:33Speaker 2: idea me and my ex had where we were going
- 3:36Speaker 2: to have five people to submit ideas for... a music
- 3:41Speaker 2: video of one song and play all of the film
- 3:44Speaker 2: submissions at once simultaneously on different screens in the same room.
- 3:49Speaker 2: So you could look at all the different screens playing
- 3:51Speaker 2: and see all these different interpretations of this one song.
- 3:54Speaker 2: We got the idea from a museum exhibit we really liked.
- 3:58Speaker 1: So I wrote this.
- 3:59Speaker 2: But yeah, it's not super refined or edited or anything. Also,
- 4:03Speaker 2: a lot of these were written with the intent of
- 4:06Speaker 2: being simple.
- 4:09Speaker 1: In mind.
- 4:09Speaker 2: So it's like a single narrator, which is sad because
- 4:12Speaker 2: I want Samantha.
- 4:13Speaker 1: To be more involved in these. It's okay. The next one,
- 4:16Speaker 1: it should be you. No, thank you. I would love it.
- 4:23Speaker 1: I would love it. Speaking of different interpretations, that would
- 4:26Speaker 1: be great. I just do my own interpretation of it all. Yes,
- 4:30Speaker 1: I would love it. I would love it.
- 4:32Speaker 2: And yes, I did want to release this one as
- 4:34Speaker 2: it comes out as Christmas Eve because we are in
- 4:37Speaker 2: the midst of cuffing season, which is a term I
- 4:39Speaker 2: originally learned from you, Samantha.
- 4:41Speaker 1: It's true. I just had to teach someone else that yesterday. Yes,
- 4:45Speaker 1: which it is essentially what, like dating time?
- 4:48Speaker 2: Essentially, you want to be cuffed or snuggled up with
- 4:51Speaker 2: someone because it is cold and it's the holidays. Ah.
- 4:55Speaker 1: Right. Okay. Okay.
- 4:57Speaker 2: And I did just, I also just learned about dating
- 4:59Speaker 2: terms like situationships, which is, quote, a romantic or sexual
- 5:03Speaker 2: relationship that is not considered to be formal or established,
- 5:07Speaker 2: and roaching, meaning someone is sleeping around with a lot.
- 5:10Speaker 1: Of people while in a relationship. Oh, roaching's new.
- 5:14Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah. Well, I'm learning new terms all the time
- 5:17Speaker 2: when it comes to the dating world. I actually want
- 5:20Speaker 2: to come back to that and do like a kind
- 5:22Speaker 2: of terminology update about these things.
- 5:25Speaker 1: What is sexist and what isn't.
- 5:27Speaker 2: Yes.
- 5:27Speaker 1: Yes, exactly.
- 5:29Speaker 2: But that is for later. For now, please sit back, relax,
- 5:34Speaker 2: and enjoy this fiction called The Right to Be Forgotten.
- 5:43Speaker 2: There once was a man named Will, and Will was
- 5:46Speaker 2: in love. Her name was Hannah. Will and Hannah were perfect.
- 5:52Speaker 2: They adored each other, the kind of love that is
- 5:55Speaker 2: pure and fun and steady and unyielding and beautiful.
- 6:01Speaker 1: The kind that makes people jealous.
- 6:03Speaker 2: They took goofy pictures together and went on adventures and
- 6:06Speaker 2: stayed in and knew each other truly, heart and.
- 6:11Speaker 1: Soul, complete. There was no Will without Hannah. They got
- 6:17Speaker 1: married in a blur of bright, bright happiness.
- 6:21Speaker 2: He remembered thinking wildly it was impossible to feel this
- 6:24Speaker 2: happy and that he was worthy of it.
- 6:27Speaker 1: And they were going to live happily ever after. But
- 6:32Speaker 1: they didn't.
- 6:36Speaker 2: Then Hannah was gone and Will's world was shattered. All
- 6:39Speaker 2: meaning was lost. Nothing made sense without Hannah. There was
- 6:44Speaker 2: no point without Hannah. Tears, a bone-deep grief, and an
- 6:49Speaker 2: unending well of physical aching loss, sitting aimlessly, staring, staring, staring,
- 6:56Speaker 2: at a picture of them together, so wonderfully willing to
- 6:58Speaker 2: be silly around each other, so happy, so complete.
- 7:03Speaker 1: It was night.
- 7:05Speaker 2: He'd woken up suddenly, gasping, a hand over his racing heart,
- 7:08Speaker 2: dreaming of Hannah, that he was screaming for her to
- 7:11Speaker 2: come back, but she couldn't hear him. He blinked away
- 7:14Speaker 2: the image, eyes adjusting to the dark.
- 7:17Speaker 1: Nothing. Always nothing. He was alone.
- 7:25Speaker 2: He sat up slowly, the familiar cocoon of grief encasing him.
- 7:29Speaker 2: He got up, went to the fridge and poured himself
- 7:31Speaker 2: a glass of water, gulping it down. A picture of
- 7:35Speaker 2: the two of them, blissful, unknowing, smiled back at him.
- 7:43Speaker 2: Then his skin started to prickle. Cold crept up his spine.
- 7:47Speaker 2: Behind him, a woman sat up in the bed. A
- 7:51Speaker 2: woman who had not been there, who could not be there.
- 7:56Speaker 1: It was Hannah.
- 7:59Speaker 2: She looked the same, but different. Hazy around the edges,
- 8:02Speaker 2: soft focus. She watched him, solemn, still. She was wearing
- 8:09Speaker 2: her favorite pajamas, bright suns and stars and moons that
- 8:12Speaker 2: clashed with her serious expression.
- 8:16Speaker 1: Will turned.
- 8:18Speaker 2: He stared in her direction, set his glass down, slowly
- 8:23Speaker 2: made his way over to her, sat on the bed
- 8:26Speaker 2: next to her, hid his face in his hands, hid
- 8:30Speaker 2: the tears streaming down his cheeks, tears that should be
- 8:33Speaker 2: impossible with how much he'd cried in the past days, weeks, months.
- 8:39Speaker 2: When he opened his eyes, the woman was gone. He
- 8:42Speaker 2: laid down and pulled the covers around him and laid
- 8:44Speaker 2: awake until the light turned purple and blue and the
- 8:47Speaker 2: sun rose and he rose with it to face another
- 8:50Speaker 2: meaningless day. The toaster dinged. Hannah was waiting in the kitchen, smiling.
- 8:58Speaker 2: Will blinked once, twice, reached into the cabinet, retrieving a
- 9:03Speaker 2: jar of peanut butter. He started slathering on his toast
- 9:07Speaker 2: in a numb haze, autopilot, a zombie as he had
- 9:10Speaker 2: been since he lost Hannah and a crater was left
- 9:12Speaker 2: in his soul, festering. The jar knocked over. Will jumped
- 9:18Speaker 2: at the sound, staring at the overturned jar warily. He
- 9:21Speaker 2: reached to upright it.
- 9:24Speaker 1: So did Hannah.
- 9:25Speaker 2: Their hands almost touched. But Hannah pulled away at the
- 9:30Speaker 2: last second. Will ignored her, tired of the fathomless grief
- 9:35Speaker 2: she brought, unwilling and unable to face her. But he'd
- 9:40Speaker 2: never been good at ignoring her. And she'd always been persistent.
- 9:47Speaker 2: He was sitting in traffic, listening to a voicemail from
- 9:50Speaker 2: his boss.
- 9:52Speaker 1: Take your time. We understand, she says, though Will knows
- 9:56Speaker 1: they don't.
- 9:58Speaker 2: He hangs up, numb again. all the sound around him
- 10:02Speaker 2: falling away in its shadow. Next to his ear, a
- 10:07Speaker 2: woman laughed.
- 10:10Speaker 1: He jerked, whipping around, afraid of what he'd see and
- 10:12Speaker 1: what he wouldn't. But there was no one.
- 10:19Speaker 2: After a long moment, he brought his frantic breathing under
- 10:21Speaker 2: control and turned back to the road, tense.
- 10:25Speaker 1: No one was there, he told himself.
- 10:29Speaker 2: He sat at his desk, feeling fake and corporeal, as
- 10:33Speaker 2: though he might fade from existence at any second. A
- 10:37Speaker 2: co-worker approached, her eyes shining with compassion that could not
- 10:41Speaker 2: penetrate the sheath of sadness around him.
- 10:45Speaker 1: How are you? she asked.
- 10:47Speaker 2: He didn't respond and after a moment, she left. He
- 10:52Speaker 2: turned back to his laptop, eyes burning, throat tight, so
- 10:56Speaker 2: utterly dead inside and wondering if it might be better
- 10:59Speaker 2: to be dead outside too. An image of Hannah pops
- 11:03Speaker 2: up in his social media feed, smiling, happy. He snapped
- 11:08Speaker 2: the lid of his laptop shut. He stands up roughly,
- 11:11Speaker 2: his chair rolling away, loud in the quiet space. He left,
- 11:15Speaker 2: his steps quick, imagining Hannah was right behind him, the
- 11:19Speaker 2: weight of her gaze unbearable. He drives home, turning up
- 11:25Speaker 2: the radio as loud as it will go, desperate to
- 11:27Speaker 2: drown everything out, to drown her out. The song is
- 11:32Speaker 2: so loud he can barely hear his own voice as
- 11:34Speaker 2: he joins in, belting out the lyrics, determined to feel
- 11:38Speaker 2: something else, to think of anything else. or not think
- 11:42Speaker 2: at all to prove to himself that he could be happy.
- 11:48Speaker 1: He glanced at the.
- 11:48Speaker 2: Passenger side, and Hannah was there, shouting the words along
- 11:52Speaker 2: with him. His heart stuttered to a stop, and he
- 11:56Speaker 2: jerked the wheel.
- 11:57Speaker 1: Another driver honking at him.
- 12:00Speaker 2: He swallowed, tamping back his panic, ramrod still, determined not
- 12:04Speaker 2: to look back at the passenger seat, even though it
- 12:06Speaker 2: took everything he had not to. When he got home,
- 12:11Speaker 2: He shakily opened his laptop, navigating to the pictures folder.
- 12:15Speaker 2: He began deleting them with self-destructive impulsivity, determined to erase
- 12:19Speaker 2: her from his life. Hannah watched him from the door,
- 12:22Speaker 2: her arms crossed. He refused to look at her. She
- 12:27Speaker 2: pushed herself off the frame, slowly taking the seat next
- 12:29Speaker 2: to him. He tensed but did not turn. Tears burned
- 12:34Speaker 2: in his eyes. Hannah's pixelated face stared back at him,
- 12:38Speaker 2: her usual blinding smile almost obscured by the gray notification
- 12:41Speaker 2: asking him if he was sure he wanted to permanently
- 12:44Speaker 2: delete these items. He hovered the mouse over the image
- 12:47Speaker 2: indecisively as Hannah watched. He closed that at the notification,
- 12:52Speaker 2: breathing ragged. He called his best friend, overcome with desperation.
- 12:58Speaker 2: He hesitated, heart racing, before he said, I've been seeing her, Hannah. Hannah.
- 13:04Speaker 1: His friend was clearly taken aback. Where? He asked.
- 13:09Speaker 2: Everywhere, Will whispered. In my apartment, my office, my car,
- 13:14Speaker 2: my bed. Like a ghost or something? His friend asked.
- 13:19Speaker 2: Will didn't respond.
- 13:21Speaker 1: He couldn't. And the words hung dead between them.
- 13:25Speaker 2: His friend said he was worried about him. That loss
- 13:28Speaker 2: can mess with people. Asked if he was okay. He
- 13:33Speaker 2: wasn't okay. Hannah was gone. Of course he wasn't okay.
- 13:40Speaker 2: He was eating takeout, mindlessly watching something on TV, something
- 13:44Speaker 2: he'd never seen before but didn't care about so as
- 13:46Speaker 2: not to trigger any memories of Hannah. But she was
- 13:49Speaker 2: there anyway. She was at his side, standing over him, shouting, muffled, distorted.
- 13:56Speaker 2: He turned the volume up. The next morning, he woke
- 14:01Speaker 2: out of a restless sleep to the sound of water
- 14:03Speaker 2: running The shower, he realized after a moment. Dread and
- 14:08Speaker 2: anticipation gripped him, and as if in a dream, he
- 14:11Speaker 2: stood and slowly made his way to the bathroom, heart
- 14:14Speaker 2: drumming in his ears. As he got closer, he could
- 14:18Speaker 2: hear a woman humming. He held his breath as he
- 14:21Speaker 2: gently pushed the bathroom door open. Through the shower curtain,
- 14:26Speaker 2: he saw the silhouette of a woman. He jerked away,
- 14:30Speaker 2: leaning heavily against the sink, heart galloping, panting. He squeezed
- 14:35Speaker 2: his eyes shut, took a slow breath, then another. The
- 14:40Speaker 2: humming cut off abruptly, as did the sound of running water. Still,
- 14:44Speaker 2: he kept his eyes shut for a long moment before
- 14:46Speaker 2: he had the courage to open them.
- 14:50Speaker 1: The woman was gone. She was gone. That should be
- 14:55Speaker 1: a relief.
- 14:57Speaker 2: Right? Then why did he feel such monumental love? His
- 15:05Speaker 2: whole body trembled as he turned back to the sink.
- 15:08Speaker 2: His eyes landed on a glass with two toothbrushes in them. Suddenly,
- 15:12Speaker 2: he picked one up and threw it away. Will softly
- 15:17Speaker 2: drank his beer. It was night and he was cooking.
- 15:21Speaker 2: Music played. The tears in his eyes made the light
- 15:24Speaker 2: both too bright and too blurry. He saw her and smiled.
- 15:30Speaker 2: She was laughing and joking and dancing like they used to.
- 15:35Speaker 2: But she's not real, he told himself. She's not real.
- 15:41Speaker 2: The song, soft at first, gets louder and louder. That night,
- 15:49Speaker 2: he couldn't sleep. Hannah wasn't there. He unlocked his phone,
- 15:53Speaker 2: the blue light garish in the dark. He was crying again,
- 15:57Speaker 2: but he almost didn't notice. He shook when he opened
- 16:01Speaker 2: the video he'd been avoiding ever since his life was
- 16:03Speaker 2: torn asunder. The sight of her, shining, happy, laughing, twirling
- 16:11Speaker 2: around in a wedding dress, brought a gas to his lips.
- 16:14Speaker 1: Fairy lights illuminate her in the dark.
- 16:17Speaker 2: Will sobbed at the soothing sounds of her life that
- 16:20Speaker 2: were now like a knife ripping him apart and exposing him.
- 16:23Speaker 2: Her smile, her happiness, a condemnation. Another man stepped into frame,
- 16:29Speaker 2: beaming at her, hugging her to him. Will's heart stuttered, dropped.
- 16:35Speaker 2: They were in love. Hannah had moved on and found
- 16:39Speaker 2: love with another man. People crowded them, laughing, smiling, the
- 16:46Speaker 2: music soft and sweet. They looked at each other, the
- 16:49Speaker 2: look in her eyes, the same look she used to
- 16:51Speaker 2: fix on Will, as though she really saw him and
- 16:54Speaker 2: saw the good in him, the value, and loved him,
- 16:57Speaker 2: cared for him.
- 17:00Speaker 1: And she had.
- 17:02Speaker 2: But now she had moved on to another person, And
- 17:05Speaker 2: Will was alone with only the ghost of her. Memories
- 17:08Speaker 2: like a haunting keeping him from moving on. She'll fade,
- 17:13Speaker 2: people told him. But Will didn't want her to fade.
- 17:17Speaker 2: There was no Will without Hannah. He was a fragment
- 17:20Speaker 2: without her. The ghost of her would haunt him forever.
- 17:24Speaker 2: Anytime he laughed or cried or drank that beer that
- 17:26Speaker 2: she loved or watched that movie that made her laugh
- 17:29Speaker 2: or sat on their couch or did or felt anything
- 17:32Speaker 2: because they did everything possible experienced everything together. But at
- 17:38Speaker 2: least the ghost of her was better than not having
- 17:41Speaker 2: her in his life at all. That brings us to
- 18:10Speaker 2: the end of this fiction portion. I know you're probably mad.
- 18:14Speaker 2: I know you're probably mad at the ending. I like
- 18:17Speaker 2: to call this one the reverse sixth sense.
- 18:19Speaker 1: Uh-oh. Yeah, yep.
- 18:21Speaker 2: The name comes from this legal push from a few
- 18:23Speaker 2: years ago where a man was suing companies like Google
- 18:26Speaker 2: for the quote, right to be forgotten. And it's become
- 18:29Speaker 2: somewhat of a term in regards to the internet and
- 18:31Speaker 2: data collection and this whole idea of the right to
- 18:34Speaker 2: be forgotten or to know what data is being collected
- 18:37Speaker 2: and to have control over it. And again, I don't
- 18:40Speaker 2: know why, but I really like applying these technical terms
- 18:43Speaker 2: to human nature. Other titles were The Ghost of You
- 18:47Speaker 2: in a Modern Day Fairy Tale. But this one has
- 18:51Speaker 2: also been on my mind because I've been thinking about
- 18:53Speaker 2: the power of breakup stories and how a breakup can.
- 18:56Speaker 1: Really wreck you and your life and I.
- 18:59Speaker 2: Just, like, all those things where you see pieces of
- 19:03Speaker 2: the other person everywhere, of the life you had everywhere,
- 19:06Speaker 2: all the things and items and places that remind you
- 19:09Speaker 2: of times you spent together. I don't know. It feels
- 19:12Speaker 2: like a ghost to me. It feels like something hanging over. Like,
- 19:15Speaker 2: it's always there, whether you want it to be or not.
- 19:20Speaker 2: And I've also been thinking... Because we were talking about...
- 19:24Speaker 2: This year has been called the year of the breakup
- 19:26Speaker 2: album with Taylor Swift and Adele dominating the charts. And
- 19:30Speaker 2: you and I have talked before about, you know, ending
- 19:33Speaker 2: up in someone else's song or.
- 19:35Speaker 1: Yes. Yes, things like that. And I.
- 19:40Speaker 2: Don't... It's strange to me that these exes I have
- 19:44Speaker 2: in my life, where I'm so convinced it's a good
- 19:47Speaker 2: thing we broke up, still have this... I don't know
- 19:50Speaker 2: if it's power, but I still think, oh, I wonder
- 19:52Speaker 2: what they would think if they knew I were talking
- 19:54Speaker 2: about them. Or I wonder what they would think about
- 19:58Speaker 2: my conversations now about how I think relationships should look
- 20:01Speaker 2: or how sex should look, like all of these things.
- 20:04Speaker 2: It just amazes me. It makes sense if you spend...
- 20:08Speaker 2: So much time with someone, you make these memories with people.
- 20:12Speaker 2: And perhaps the part of you thinks, you know, it's
- 20:14Speaker 2: forever and then it's not. But it is, I'll just
- 20:18Speaker 2: catch myself thinking, why do.
- 20:19Speaker 1: I care what he thinks? Still do. Right? Right?
- 20:25Speaker 2: And it cracks me up that I've had like the
- 20:31Speaker 2: most stereotypical breakups. story that you can imagine with the
- 20:35Speaker 2: ice cream and the crying and the cookies and all
- 20:36Speaker 2: of this stuff. And I never would have thought it
- 20:38Speaker 2: would have been like that and that it would have
- 20:41Speaker 2: lasted as long as it did because it did. Yeah. Yeah,
- 20:46Speaker 2: so Merry Christmas.
- 20:48Speaker 1: Merry Christmas. Get yourself a box of cookies and cry. Yes, yes.
- 20:53Speaker 2: Do whatever, you know, makes you happy, is healthy for
- 20:56Speaker 2: you self-care wise. We are so thrilled to have you
