Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Here's your host, Alex Garret.
- 0:08Speaker 2: All right, Alex Gattier back in with Lou Termoilo for
- 0:12Speaker 2: Termielo's take, and boy, oh boy a moment today as
- 0:17Speaker 2: on the heels of the NHL draft, Your Islanders make
- 0:22Speaker 2: a big move. Tell us what happened today, louis the.
- 0:25Speaker 1: New York Islanders and Matthew darsh made his first big
- 0:29Speaker 1: move Aslinole's general manager today. They had been rumors that
- 0:34Speaker 1: they may not sign Dobson, who was looking for eleven
- 0:37Speaker 1: million dollars a year and he didn't get that, but
- 0:40Speaker 1: they decided to trade him and big risk. I think
- 0:46Speaker 1: getting rid of Noah Doopson, a right hand shooting defenseman
- 0:51Speaker 1: with skill, an excellent skater who's only twenty five years old,
- 0:57Speaker 1: who two years ago had seventy points is risky, so
- 1:02Speaker 1: we'll see. Allegedly was looking for eleven he signed for
- 1:06Speaker 1: eight years with Montreal for nine point five. If the
- 1:10Speaker 1: Islanders want to contend next year, they didn't show that
- 1:13Speaker 1: today by trading one of their best players in nowhere
- 1:17Speaker 1: adopts in the prime of his career.
- 1:19Speaker 2: So what are the Islanders getting back in this tree?
- 1:23Speaker 1: Well, the Islanders, as we said, they traded no adoption
- 1:25Speaker 1: to Montreal, who immediately signed an eight year deal at
- 1:29Speaker 1: nine point five a year with the Montreal Canadians. And
- 1:34Speaker 1: they're gonna be good Montreal. They were up and coming
- 1:37Speaker 1: team last year and a right hand skating, shooting defenseman
- 1:45Speaker 1: with a high skill set is going to be an
- 1:47Speaker 1: asset for Montreal. The Islanders got the sixteenth and seventeenth
- 1:51Speaker 1: picked tonight, so they'll have the back to back picks
- 1:54Speaker 1: in the first round. And they got Eric Heineman, who
- 1:57Speaker 1: was a left wing players rookie gear last year Montreal.
- 2:00Speaker 1: In sixty six games, he scored ten goals at eight assists,
- 2:04Speaker 1: but he's six to two hundred pounds. His claim to
- 2:07Speaker 1: fame Alex was when Montreal was playing Utah in Salt
- 2:11Speaker 1: Lake City, he got hit by a car and he
- 2:15Speaker 1: missed three to four weeks. But again, he's a guy
- 2:18Speaker 1: that they're probably looking to fill in on the bottom six.
- 2:21Speaker 1: I don't know much about him, so we'll see what
- 2:25Speaker 1: happens there now. You know.
- 2:27Speaker 2: The other interesting thing is that I was reading this
- 2:29Speaker 2: the other day. That is why I got to read
- 2:30Speaker 2: the newspaper still, because as much scrolling as I do,
- 2:33Speaker 2: I didn't know this until I read it in the newspaper.
- 2:36Speaker 2: Matt Martin retired this week?
- 2:38Speaker 1: Is that right? Yes, he did, and he's going to
- 2:42Speaker 1: be a special advisor to the new general manager, Matthew Dartch.
- 2:47Speaker 1: And I think, hey, you know, he's a natural, he's
- 2:49Speaker 1: a hockey lifer, and he was a very good Islander.
- 2:54Speaker 1: You know, he played all but two of his years
- 2:57Speaker 1: with the Island in the island, So he's one of
- 3:02Speaker 1: those guys Wo's gonna be with the Islands forever unless
- 3:04Speaker 1: he gets a job as a general manager somewhere else.
- 3:08Speaker 1: And you know, like the Islanders have to get back
- 3:13Speaker 1: to having a little grit and determination and as they
- 3:18Speaker 1: use a hockey term, they have to have some jam
- 3:20Speaker 1: like they had when Barry Trotz got them to the
- 3:23Speaker 1: Stanley Cup semifinals two years in a row. So it's
- 3:27Speaker 1: gonna be interesting to see if they go after more
- 3:30Speaker 1: of those guys. I mean, if they were closer to
- 3:36Speaker 1: a title and they're not. A guy like Brad mar
- 3:39Speaker 1: Shant would be perfect. But he's thirty seven years old
- 3:42Speaker 1: and he's gonna go to a team if he doesn't
- 3:44Speaker 1: resign with the Florida Panthers that have a chance to
- 3:49Speaker 1: win the Cup and their defenseman of the future, the
- 3:53Speaker 1: excellent skating left handed shooter defenseman from the Erie odas
- 3:58Speaker 1: Matthew Schaeffer.
- 4:00Speaker 2: Mom, Jennifer, so yeah, Oh.
- 4:02Speaker 1: It's I mean, and the kid is very mature. He
- 4:06Speaker 1: brings up his mom a lot in interviews, and he's
- 4:10Speaker 1: only seventeen, Alex, and he's a fantastic skater. He could
- 4:15Speaker 1: pick up he could pick up the punk at one
- 4:17Speaker 1: end of the of the ice and take it to
- 4:20Speaker 1: the other. And nobody's done that on a consistent basis
- 4:24Speaker 1: since the greatest defenseman of all time, Bobby Orr back
- 4:28Speaker 1: in the seventies.
- 4:29Speaker 2: Pretty high praise for Matthew Shafer coming from lifelong Islander
- 4:32Speaker 2: fan and our industry expert and executive Lou Terminello. Thank you, Lou,
- 4:38Speaker 2: and we'll have you back on in the coming days
- 4:40Speaker 2: to recap the entire NHL Draft and more. But for now,
- 4:44Speaker 2: this was a breaking news edition of Terminello's take on
