- 0:08SPEAKER_00: Beautiful evening here in Statesville, North Carolina.
- 0:11SPEAKER_00: And I am very excited.
- 0:13SPEAKER_00: Another mystery guest, another one that we plucked from the men's Bible study.
- 0:18SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 0:19SPEAKER_00: And so, Mystery Guest, would you mind uh leading us in a prayer?
- 0:23SPEAKER_02: Certainly.
- 0:24SPEAKER_02: Uh in the name of the Father and the Son and Holy Spirit, amen.
- 0:29SPEAKER_02: Uh dear Lord, uh, please guide us tonight uh both in uh in this podcast, but also in our uh the Bible study that we'll have later.
- 0:37SPEAKER_02: Please help us uh understand your purpose for us in uh in our lives and uh and give us wisdom and discernment.
- 0:45SPEAKER_02: Uh in your name we pray.
- 0:47SPEAKER_02: Amen.
- 0:47SPEAKER_02: Amen.
- 0:48SPEAKER_02: In the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, amen.
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: That was awesome, awesome.
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: All right, mystery guest, who are you?
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: Please introduce yourself.
- 0:55SPEAKER_02: Michael Chenard, and I've been with the uh the men's Bible study now not not from the beginning, but close to it, I think.
- 1:01SPEAKER_02: Yeah, we started at uh St.
- 1:02SPEAKER_02: Teresa's St.
- 1:03SPEAKER_01: Teresa when you were coming.
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: And so uh, well, let's start with that.
- 1:08SPEAKER_00: Uh are you a parishioner currently at St.
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: Teresa or St.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: St.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: Teresa?
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: St.
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: Teresa.
- 1:12SPEAKER_00: Okay, so you've stayed the course.
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: That's that's great to hear.
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: Um, so my brother's journey, we talk about men's spiritual journey.
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: Okay, so um so I I usually start off with are you a cradle Catholic or a convert?
- 1:31SPEAKER_00: Cradle.
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: Okay, so tell us where were you born, raised, and tell us about the early early life, you know, all the way maybe up to college, and then we can go from there.
- 1:41SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah, that's a long answer.
- 1:44SPEAKER_02: Dad was in the Navy.
- 1:45SPEAKER_02: So we we were born in uh Monterey, California, and then moved to, and I had to get this right, it's uh uh New Hampshire, Texas, New York, back to California, and then Virginia for high school and college.
- 1:59SPEAKER_02: Holy crazy.
- 2:00SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so and then there's some Indiana sprinkled in there, and I think there was uh there was one other place, but yeah, those those were the big ones.
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: So you moved quite a bit.
- 2:09SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: Clearly.
- 2:11SPEAKER_00: Um because of dad's assignments, I assume.
- 2:14SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 2:14SPEAKER_00: Yeah, wow.
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: So um how were you growing up in terms of you know, as a Catholic kid?
- 2:22SPEAKER_00: Were you a churchgoer?
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: Were you I mean, tell us a little bit about that part of your life.
- 2:27SPEAKER_02: It it's funny.
- 2:28SPEAKER_02: I mean, I and I know that um everyone has different experiences.
- 2:31SPEAKER_02: We we went to church every Sunday.
- 2:33SPEAKER_02: Uh, and I imagine there were times we were traveling and and didn't get to church, but when we were home, we went to church.
- 2:39SPEAKER_02: Um, I remember distinctly um I I would want my parents to sit between me and my older brother because he just could not stop messing with us in church.
- 2:53SPEAKER_02: Like, don't you're making it hard on me.
- 2:55SPEAKER_02: Like no, it was always like every, you know, and even in uh in college, I went to I went to church in college.
- 3:01SPEAKER_02: I I didn't I've never really stopped.
- 3:04SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, to is it every Sunday, you know, we just we went to Glacier National Park this past week and uh did not get to church, but we were always in God's cathedral.
- 3:14SPEAKER_02: Yes, you are, yeah, for sure.
- 3:15SPEAKER_01: So let me ask you a question about that.
- 3:17SPEAKER_01: So your parents were obviously Catholic, I assume as well.
- 3:21SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you know, interestingly, I found my dad's uh baptismal certificate, and I think he was baptized Presbyterian.
- 3:29SPEAKER_02: Really?
- 3:29SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 3:30SPEAKER_02: His his mother came from Scotland, okay, and then his father was uh New Brunswick in uh in Canada.
- 3:37SPEAKER_02: So very I mean, New Brunswick, the Bear Times, a lot of Catholics up there, but um, but I think his mother had a big influence on uh on how the children were developed.
- 3:47SPEAKER_01: So so then was your mom uh a Korean Catholic then?
- 3:51SPEAKER_01: I mean, did she your dad was a cat?
- 3:53SPEAKER_01: Well, but my dad was also Catholic, so he was baptized presbyterian.
- 3:57SPEAKER_02: Okay, he lost his mother when he was three.
- 3:59SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 4:01SPEAKER_02: So he was he was raised by an aunt and uncle and raised Catholic.
- 4:06SPEAKER_02: So, you know, for as all uh as far as we knew, he was Catholic from day one.
- 4:10SPEAKER_02: But and then mom, born and raised in Newport, Rhode Island, and went to St.
- 4:15SPEAKER_02: Mary's and the uh St.
- 4:17SPEAKER_02: Catharine's Academy and all that.
- 4:20SPEAKER_02: So yeah.
- 4:21SPEAKER_01: So I'm curious, right?
- 4:22SPEAKER_01: I did they I mean, as far as catechizing you and your older brother and things like that, were they really engaged with the faith, or was it more of the well, this is a Sunday outdess and it's what we do?
- 4:33SPEAKER_01: I mean, this is was Catholicism something they lived, or it's just something they did?
- 4:37SPEAKER_02: Maybe a bit of both.
- 4:38SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 4:39SPEAKER_02: So uh, you know, we didn't we we never read the Bible.
- 4:44SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, we were good Catholics.
- 4:45SPEAKER_02: We didn't know there wasn't typical, right?
- 4:51SPEAKER_02: Chapter at a time.
- 4:52SPEAKER_02: Why do you need to read it when the priest tells you about it every Sunday?
- 4:55SPEAKER_02: Um No, we we didn't have a I um we must have had a Bible in the house.
- 4:59SPEAKER_02: We never we never opened it.
- 5:00SPEAKER_02: We didn't praise a family.
- 5:01SPEAKER_02: Uh but that doesn't mean that God wasn't there.
- 5:03SPEAKER_02: And it and true and did they live it?
- 5:05SPEAKER_02: I mean, every single day they lived it.
- 5:07SPEAKER_02: You know, we'll talk about that tonight.
- 5:09SPEAKER_02: About, you know, how do you know that you're a Christian?
- 5:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 5:13SPEAKER_02: And it's really by, you know, you should be able to tell by looking at somebody, um, by how they act, how they respond to people, the kindness and and all that.
- 5:21SPEAKER_02: I mean, that's not strictly Christianity, but right, you know, that's one issue.
- 5:25SPEAKER_01: There's not a lot to do with it.
- 5:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 5:26SPEAKER_01: But I was just curious if it was more of a because we've talked about that throughout this journey that we have as far as you know, checking the boxes, going through the emotions versus actually being engaged with your faith and and yeah, and again, I think a bit of both.
- 5:38SPEAKER_02: You know, we went to church every Sunday, but we didn't praise the family.
- 5:42SPEAKER_02: So that's but it wasn't going to church and saying, okay, let's uh, you know, I we wouldn't leave right after communion.
- 5:50SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 5:51SPEAKER_02: We stayed.
- 5:51SPEAKER_02: We stayed for the uh for the hymns.
- 5:53SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 5:54SPEAKER_02: Mom always said you only have to stay for the first verse.
- 5:57SPEAKER_02: And then or you know, as soon as the priest passes you on the aisle, then you're free.
- 6:04SPEAKER_02: You've been released.
- 6:05SPEAKER_02: Because he can't see you leaving.
- 6:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 6:08SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 6:09SPEAKER_00: So let's talk a little bit about college.
- 6:12SPEAKER_00: Um, first of all, where did you go to college, if you don't mind me asking?
- 6:16SPEAKER_00: University of Virginia.
- 6:17SPEAKER_00: Okay, very nice, very nice.
- 6:19SPEAKER_00: Um so you said that you went to church while you were at in college.
- 6:25SPEAKER_00: Mostly.
- 6:26SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 6:27SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 6:28SPEAKER_00: Did you go out of obligation like Catholic guilt, or did you go because you truly had something burning inside to be part of that mass?
- 6:37SPEAKER_02: Well, I met a girl.
- 6:38SPEAKER_00: Okay, that that's always that's a good start.
- 6:41SPEAKER_00: This isn't a joke, right?
- 6:42SPEAKER_00: The beginning of a punchline.
- 6:44SPEAKER_00: No, no, no.
- 6:44SPEAKER_00: I got plenty of those, so I can use them today.
- 6:47SPEAKER_02: Um, no, my wife, my current wife, we we started dating.
- 6:51SPEAKER_02: Um, although I went to I did go to church my first year.
- 6:55SPEAKER_02: I didn't know her, I didn't meet her until between her first and second years of college, but um, but she's Methodist or she was she was raised Methodist um and is still Protestant, not not kind of non-denominational at this point, but um but she was very she's a she was and is a very godly woman.
- 7:16SPEAKER_02: And and I thought, you know, if I'm serious about this relationship, then I kind of need to be serious about the other relationship.
- 7:26SPEAKER_02: So because without that, I really shouldn't be with her.
- 7:30SPEAKER_02: There's gotta be another girl out there that that would be uh more accepting of somebody who wasn't serious about their faith.
- 7:37SPEAKER_02: So she had a lot to do with it.
- 7:40SPEAKER_02: And so so dating her refocused your Yeah, you know, it um I never really left, but yeah, but it helped to give you know a deeper deeper commitment or meaning to it.
- 7:57SPEAKER_00: And so uh Mary, do you do do you have children?
- 8:00SPEAKER_00: Three.
- 8:01SPEAKER_00: Three children, yeah um and I assume you how how did you how did you raise them?
- 8:07SPEAKER_02: Yeah, uh so again, interesting.
- 8:09SPEAKER_02: Um they were baptized Catholic, uh got their first communion and um reconciliation in the Catholic Church, uh, but then did their confirmation in the Methodist Church.
- 8:21SPEAKER_02: And that again is to honor my wife.
- 8:24SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 8:25SPEAKER_02: Um and you know, and and they did all the hard stuff.
- 8:30SPEAKER_02: So now my my my s our son, middle son, is getting serious with a girlfriend and she's Catholic, and and he said, Hey, um was I uh uh Marla was asked, Do I was I confirmed in the Catholic Church?
- 8:46SPEAKER_02: And I said, Well, no, it was the Methodist Church.
- 8:48SPEAKER_02: Uh is that a problem if we get married?
- 8:50SPEAKER_02: And I and I did some research on it, and the answer is really depends on the priest.
- 8:54SPEAKER_02: And and that one, you know, to get to confirm your your baptism is a fairly quick process.
- 9:01SPEAKER_02: So but that's the way it is with with all the kids.
- 9:04SPEAKER_02: So if they choose, the way we looked at it was like, you know, let's do the hard stuff.
- 9:09SPEAKER_02: And then we kind of open the door and make it possible.
- 9:11SPEAKER_02: If they find a Catholic girl or a boy that that they want to be with, then it'll be a little easier.
- 9:16SPEAKER_00: So um if if he decides to kind of go all in and become Catholic again.
- 9:25SPEAKER_02: Well, he still is.
- 9:26SPEAKER_02: I mean, he's I mean there Well, I mean, where does he go to Catholic church or does he go to Catholics?
- 9:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 9:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but where does he like where does he attend church on Sunday?
- 9:35SPEAKER_02: But that's you know, there it it depends on the kid.
- 9:38SPEAKER_02: So the children or people that age tend to be so focused on themselves that they don't really think about, you know, am I gonna go to church on Sunday?
- 9:48SPEAKER_02: Um his girlfriend is making him think about it.
- 9:51SPEAKER_02: And um so that's you know, he I think I think he if you asked him right now how do you self-identify, he'd say Christian.
- 10:01SPEAKER_02: And he might even say Catholic Christian, but he would say Christian.
- 10:05SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you know, and that's really what my wife and I focused on.
- 10:08SPEAKER_00: Yeah, no, the reason I was going there, because I believe it or not, we have very exact parallels here.
- 10:13SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I know.
- 10:15SPEAKER_00: So my wife is still Protestant, our children were baptized Catholic, they did not go past baptism.
- 10:22SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 10:23SPEAKER_00: Um to honor her, I uh I agreed to allow the children to essentially be raised Protestant in their faith.
- 10:35SPEAKER_00: Um, and then when my son, my sons went away to college, one of them, um and I I don't remember the order here, so but I think he fell in love first with the girl and then decided I'm who's very careful, Catholic, and then decided, yeah, I I want to become Catholic.
- 10:55SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 10:57SPEAKER_00: So uh so he then went through the at that time, at that time it was still called RCIA, right?
- 11:04SPEAKER_00: So he went through the RCIA program and all that, and of course I was elated.
- 11:09SPEAKER_00: Um, but I think my wife personally felt hurt by that.
- 11:14SPEAKER_00: Um, and I that's the reason I was asking is if he became fully Catholic in in that way and started go and and going to church, would would would she uh be upset with that or no?
- 11:25SPEAKER_02: Not at all.
- 11:26SPEAKER_02: Okay, okay.
- 11:26SPEAKER_02: No, she'd she'd be overjoyed, thrilled that they that he'd be attending church.
- 11:32SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 11:32SPEAKER_00: Which is the right yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 11:35SPEAKER_00: No.
- 11:35SPEAKER_00: That's the only reason that was the only reason.
- 11:37SPEAKER_00: And I'm sorry, I should probably maybe I'm getting a little too personal.
- 11:40SPEAKER_00: By all means, Michael.
- 11:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah, if you feel I'm uh stepping over the line, feel free.
- 11:44SPEAKER_00: This we're very honest and transparent.
- 11:46SPEAKER_00: We don't we don't edit the for those of you, for the handful of you that may be listening, we do not edit out when uh if if if I get my hands slapped.
- 11:58SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 11:58SPEAKER_01: Michael, how old are you guys?
- 12:00SPEAKER_02: Uh 20 shoot, 29, 27, and 25.
- 12:06SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 12:07SPEAKER_01: And that's probably the toughest age, at least I found you've raised my kids.
- 12:10SPEAKER_01: That's probably the toughest age to I mean, if they go to church during that age, then they probably have some relationship outside of their their obligation to go a Catholic guild or whatever else.
- 12:21SPEAKER_01: There's something there.
- 12:22SPEAKER_01: Because that's the hardest age, my my you know, opinion.
- 12:26SPEAKER_01: To get them engaged.
- 12:27SPEAKER_01: To get them engaged with church because they have to choice.
- 12:31SPEAKER_01: And they don't have, you know, if they're raising kids, then it becomes you know, you've got to, you know, bigger part of that.
- 12:37SPEAKER_02: Our youngest is uh very serious with uh with a girl, and they're probably going to get engaged at some point.
- 12:44SPEAKER_02: There's you know, they're not rushing into it.
- 12:46SPEAKER_02: But but I sat with him and I said, you know, you really need to you need to think about this.
- 12:51SPEAKER_02: It's uh you can't just go to church and say, Hey, I want to get married.
- 12:56SPEAKER_02: You've got to have a relationship.
- 12:58SPEAKER_02: You've got it can't be the first time the pastor or the priest sees you is when you say like the American.
- 13:04SPEAKER_02: So I keep moving with him on that also.
- 13:08SPEAKER_02: Yeah, okay.
- 13:09SPEAKER_00: So um let's talk a little bit about the Bible study.
- 13:14SPEAKER_00: You you you said, Hey, I I I might not have been the first one through the door, but I was very close to being the I don't know when it started, but I think I was close to the beginning.
- 13:22SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and so what like what peaked your had you been in Bible studies before, prior to that?
- 13:28SPEAKER_00: So this was really your first one.
- 13:31SPEAKER_00: So what kind of got you what got you in the door?
- 13:34SPEAKER_00: What what what brought you to the Bible study?
- 13:37SPEAKER_02: I can't really answer that.
- 13:39SPEAKER_02: I I don't know.
- 13:41SPEAKER_02: Um divine inspiration or something, but you know, just looking at like one of the questions we have tonight is what you know have you changed in the last three or four years?
- 13:49SPEAKER_02: And you know, just even looking out there and trying to find something to be to just to understand what we're doing.
- 13:56SPEAKER_02: Um I don't have a better answer for that.
- 13:59SPEAKER_00: No, it's that that that's that's perfectly fine.
- 14:02SPEAKER_00: Uh you know, everyone has their own journey, their own answer.
- 14:06SPEAKER_00: And so where would you say you are on your journey right now?
- 14:09SPEAKER_00: I mean, you know, um yeah, kind of kind of as best you can describe it.
- 14:14SPEAKER_00: Where would you say your journey is right now?
- 14:16SPEAKER_02: Uh it's ever evolving.
- 14:18SPEAKER_02: Uh I'm nowhere near the end.
- 14:21SPEAKER_02: And and I don't like I'm I imagine there's some sort of uh uh spectrum of of like nothing to all in.
- 14:30SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 14:30SPEAKER_02: I don't know where I am on that spectrum.
- 14:32SPEAKER_02: I I just know that I'm imperfect and uh uh have don't pretend to be anywhere close to that.
- 14:39SPEAKER_02: So it's just I'm a work in progress.
- 14:41SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 14:42SPEAKER_02: Well we are as we are.
- 14:44SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 14:45SPEAKER_00: Um I I do know one I I don't know a lot about you, although I've gotten to know a little bit more right before we got on the podcast here, but um but one thing I remember I think you bringing up, or maybe someone else bringing up, you do some volunteer work.
- 15:00SPEAKER_00: Um if I remember was working with maybe handicapped or something like that.
- 15:05SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's Special Olympics.
- 15:06SPEAKER_02: I mean, and and then I know when Baron you sent me that the text about about um about this, and I was thinking that like like my I don't know if this was intentional or not, but it feels like my l whole life has been about service.
- 15:22SPEAKER_02: So served in the Navy for seven years.
- 15:24SPEAKER_02: My wife was Air Force.
- 15:26SPEAKER_02: Oh wow.
- 15:26SPEAKER_00: Um thank you for your service and hers.
- 15:29SPEAKER_02: And then well, and even in the Navy, I was a Catholically Eucharistic minister.
- 15:36SPEAKER_02: So that is the guy who brings the consecrated host onto the ship, and we would have services on Sunday, and and I would distribute the you know, and then we'd sit down, like, okay, what do you want to talk about?
- 15:50SPEAKER_02: You know, and so we'd go through the order of the mass and look, I'm not a priest, don't even pretend to be one, but at least I'm just making this available.
- 15:58SPEAKER_02: And I think I had a congregation of four, maybe, and uh Mike Gianelli, um uh Daniel Young, who gave me this Bible, and a few others.
- 16:13SPEAKER_02: Um so then uh, but service in the Navy, then uh I was with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, served for environmental, uh got my degree in in grad school in environmental management, again on the service side.
- 16:28SPEAKER_02: My mother thought I was gonna starve because I didn't get an MBA.
- 16:32SPEAKER_02: Um, and then sailing.
- 16:33SPEAKER_02: I mean, but that's not serving, that's fun, until my kids get old enough, and now they're sailing, and I'm helping them to sail, and then they get involved in high school sailing, and there were some uh high school sailing coaches that that helped them along, and I was there to support, and then all of a sudden I was the coach.
- 16:51SPEAKER_02: And so that's part of the services.
- 16:54SPEAKER_02: I would I I was the coach of Lake Norman High School sailing team for 10 years.
- 16:59SPEAKER_02: Um but in addition to that, the Special Olympic sailing.
- 17:03SPEAKER_02: So we take, in fact, it was just out on Sunday.
- 17:05SPEAKER_02: We we got back at 1 a.m.
- 17:07SPEAKER_02: from Glacier uh by two o'clock that afternoon.
- 17:10SPEAKER_02: I was out on the water with no wind, 89 degrees, and just struggling, but but out there with these people that are just so it's just they're just so full of joy.
- 17:22SPEAKER_02: How long have you been doing Special Olympics and how did you get involved?
- 17:25SPEAKER_02: I don't I don't know how long I've been doing it.
- 17:29SPEAKER_02: Um I mean that could be 12.
- 17:31SPEAKER_02: I I'm not counting, it's just yeah uh and got involved.
- 17:35SPEAKER_02: I don't the question really is how did um our friends down the street, Tom and Lisa Chambers, how did they get involved?
- 17:41SPEAKER_02: They're the ones who really started it.
- 17:43SPEAKER_02: I've just I just participate, they ran it, and they needed help.
- 17:48SPEAKER_02: So our children were it's called uh unified partners.
- 17:52SPEAKER_02: Our children were all unified partners, so they would sail with them.
- 17:54SPEAKER_02: And and I think as long as you have really highly qualified people on the boat, they would be so every so often I'd get on the boat.
- 18:01SPEAKER_02: Well, now I'm one of the primary unified partners.
- 18:04SPEAKER_02: Um and Dave and Sarah Jones are the ones that are running it.
- 18:09SPEAKER_02: Uh so you know how long have I been doing it?
- 18:12SPEAKER_02: I can't remember.
- 18:13SPEAKER_02: Yeah it's it's been a it's been a while, but I don't know.
- 18:16SPEAKER_02: I just measure it by the smiles.
- 18:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's awesome.
- 18:19SPEAKER_00: That's awesome.
- 18:20SPEAKER_00: That's that's that's that's doing God's work for sure.
