- 1:20OK, today I sit down with author Whitney Aiken, who wrote a
- 1:24fabulous book called Overlooked Finding Your Worth When You Feel
- 1:29Alone. This conversation, you guys, is
- 1:32so good at defining why we have an innate desire to be seen and
- 1:36how we can often feel overlooked in a society that promotes being
- 1:40seen everywhere we go. Whitney has her own personal
- 1:44story to share and ways we can focus on the true source of
- 1:48where we get attention, approval from that we were designed to
- 1:52live for all along. We can trade feeling overlooked
- 1:57for lifestyle of living seen. And here's how.
- 2:00Here's my guest, Whitney Aiken. Hey Whitney, I am so glad you
- 2:05are here and she speaks live. Welcome.
- 2:09Thank you so much for having me. I'm excited to be here with you.
- 2:13Yeah, I'm excited too. And I've been seeing your book
- 2:17around and your message, and wow, does it just hit home for
- 2:21me about not being seen, feeling overlooked.
- 2:26I think we've all gone through those seasons and what God
- 2:30teaches you in that place of obscurity and how he prepares
- 2:35you and the things we can do while we're waiting on him.
- 2:40So before we dive deeper into this important message, can you
- 2:46share with me your favorite scripture verse and why?
- 2:50Yeah, it's hard to pick a favorite verse, but there's one
- 2:53that I've had for a long time, and I don't know that it
- 2:59directly correlates with Overlook.
- 3:01It might could, but it's kind of obscure.
- 3:03It's Deuteronomy from Deuteronomy who has a favorite
- 3:06verse there. But in chapter 8, verse three,
- 3:09it says. And he humbled you and let you
- 3:12hunger and fed you with manna, which you did not know, nor did
- 3:16your father's know that he might make you know that man does not
- 3:19live by bread alone, but man lives by every word that comes
- 3:23from the mouth of the Lord. And I know that's a kind of a
- 3:26random verse, but I love it especially.
- 3:29I think I found this verse walking through a season of
- 3:31suffering and infertility. And in this verse I saw this
- 3:35reality that often times God brings us to a place of need.
- 3:40So that he can fill that need in a unique way that we didn't know
- 3:44and our fathers didn't know, but he can provide.
- 3:48And that that filling comes not from the solution necessarily,
- 3:53but from the word of God, from from, from Jesus, and from His
- 3:56word. And then I love that this is the
- 3:58verse that Jesus uses. When Satan tempts him to eat the
- 4:02bread in the wilderness, Jesus goes back to Deuteronomy 8 three
- 4:05and speaks that to Satan says no, man does not live on bread
- 4:09alone. And so that's always just been a
- 4:11favorite verse of mine. I love it.
- 4:13Yeah, that's beautiful. I love that too.
- 4:15So let's dive into the word overlooked.
- 4:19How has this been significant in your life?
- 4:22Share your story on this. Well, I sort of have felt that
- 4:27feeling follow me. I guess through a lot of
- 4:30different seasons of life, and I think it really began because I
- 4:34am. I'm an introvert by nature, and
- 4:36as a child I was really shy and so I just struggled to fit in
- 4:42with friend groups and kind of find my place and my special
- 4:47thing. And so I spent a lot of time.
- 4:53Feeling like, you know what's wrong with me or why don't they
- 4:56like me or whatever? I was always the kid behind my
- 4:58mom's legs, you know, just like, when can we go home?
- 5:01And so I felt that. And then as I got older, I I
- 5:06just kind of like latched myself onto this identity as being the
- 5:10the smart one or the academic achiever.
- 5:13But I still felt like I was never the best, you know, I
- 5:16really wanted to be #1 and I never really was.
- 5:18And. And I wasn't picked for the
- 5:20things I wanted to be picked for.
- 5:22I wasn't acknowledged for the things I worked really hard for.
- 5:25And then when I got older, I went through a season, like I
- 5:30said, of infertility. And I felt really overlooked in
- 5:32that season just from suffering. Not for my personality at that
- 5:37point, but just for this idea that nobody could really
- 5:40understand what I was going through.
- 5:41Nobody could fix it. I even at that point felt kind
- 5:45of overlooked by the Lord too, because he could fix it.
- 5:48And he wasn't. And so when I set out to write
- 5:51this book, I knew I wanted to address that, but I I wasn't
- 5:55sure what to call it. You know, it's like this
- 5:56feeling. It was a little elusive.
- 5:59And to pin it down, you know, I just kind of searched for the
- 6:02right word. And it was something about
- 6:04feeling unseen. It was something about being in
- 6:06the background. And when I saw the word
- 6:09overlooked in a thesaurus, I was just, you know, scrolling
- 6:12through words. I just knew that.
- 6:15That's it. That's the feeling.
- 6:18That has followed me, and it's the feeling that God has really
- 6:23led me to sort of call out and look at and wrestle with him
- 6:29over. How does that, what does he have
- 6:31to say about that feeling of overlooked?
- 6:33And how does how can I walk as a Christian in light of the
- 6:38gospel, in light of that feeling in the world we live in?
- 6:42Yeah, that's so good. And the Bible says about being
- 7:12seen and and some stories, stories from the Bible with
- 7:16that. But I want to first really
- 7:19expand on how can we actually better understand why we long to
- 7:25be seen. I think sometimes we think,
- 7:28gosh, this is so bad. Like, you know, shame on me for
- 7:32feeling like I gotta be seen, hey, over here, you know, And
- 7:36then we get this guilty feeling because we want to be seen.
- 7:42I would love for you to share with us.
- 7:44How can we better understand why we long to be seen?
- 7:49You know, that's one of the questions I really wanted to
- 7:51answer when writing the book was why does this matter so much to
- 7:54me? Yeah, a narcissist or just
- 7:57someone who's just really selfish?
- 7:59Or why do I struggle so much with this feeling?
- 8:02Because when we think about attention, we're going to have a
- 8:05negative connotation with most of us right away.
- 8:08We don't want to be the attention seeker or the one to
- 8:11get, you know, negative attention or whatever.
- 8:14But the truth is, is that attention isn't necessarily good
- 8:18or bad. It's just a thing.
- 8:20It's sort of what we do with it, that and where we seek it that
- 8:24can make it a positive or negative thing.
- 8:26So when I was researching for the book, one of the big things
- 8:30that really felt kind of just changed my way of thinking and
- 8:35honestly was an encouragement. Is that attention?
- 8:37And our need for attention is is a real thing.
- 8:40It's a biological human need. And so psychologists would say
- 8:44that in order for a human to survive and thrive, we need
- 8:48attention and approval from others.
- 8:49We need a sense of belonging. And at first I was like that.
- 8:54That can't be right. You know who can't put that on
- 8:56the same list as food and shelter?
- 8:59But when you think about it in relation to, say, children.
- 9:02You know that a baby obviously needs positive attention in
- 9:05order to really survive. And then as children grow, they
- 9:08need attention in positive ways to develop and you know and
- 9:13thrive. And what makes us think that as
- 9:15adults that just disappears? It doesn't.
- 9:18We do need this positive attention and and approval and a
- 9:24sense of belonging. In our life or we're going to be
- 9:28searching for it if we're not feeling that mean.
- 9:31And so this is where the problem comes in is.
- 9:32Because when you need to eat, you know you're hungry, right?
- 9:37You feel it when you need to sleep.
- 9:38You start like forgetting everything when you need
- 9:40positive attention. You don't really have a pain
- 9:43receptor or a way in your brain to just be like I need attention
- 9:46now you just begin to kind of feel like alone and sad and does
- 9:52anybody see me and love me. And and in this place is where
- 9:56we kind of turn and often times our responses is humans is just
- 10:01to turn to other humans and we want to fill this need and we're
- 10:05looking to other humans to fill this need and we're kind of just
- 10:09like looking at each other like do you think I'm worthy.
- 10:12Do you think you know? Do you welcome me as I am?
- 10:14Do you see me? Do you, do you know my heart?
- 10:17And the problem is, is that in the world that we live in, we
- 10:21really can't. I wish that for for every person
- 10:24listening today and every person that read my book, I wish I
- 10:26could fix the problem of feeling overlooked by other people.
- 10:30But the truth is, is that I can't.
- 10:31And we will be overlooked by other people and we will reach
- 10:34out and say, do you think I'm worthy?
- 10:36And people say no or I don't care or I don't know you're not
- 10:40worth my time. And so we can't really solve
- 10:43that problem. But what I can do is redirect
- 10:46your listeners and the people who read my book to the truth
- 10:49that if we have a biological human need, it was put there by
- 10:53a creator. And if it was put there by a
- 10:55creator, it was there for a reason.
- 10:58And that's so that he can fill that need.
- 11:00And so we look back at creation and the story of Adam and Eve.
- 11:06We see that God. He made them, He saw them, and
- 11:09he said they were very good. He gave them attention and
- 11:12approval and all the sin broke that and distance us from him.
- 11:18Sin put Adam and Eve into hiding, and a lot of us still
- 11:21live in this place of hiding from God through Jesus.
- 11:25And through the covering of Jesus.
- 11:27We get to go back to that that state, that place that says I
- 11:30see you because you're covered in my son, and you are very good
- 11:34because you're covered in the blood of Jesus.
- 11:37And if we could just get back to that place where God intended us
- 11:41to receive that attention and approval, I think that we could
- 11:44begin to satisfy this biological human need and a healthy,
- 11:49consistent way that frees us up from looking to everybody else
- 11:53and saying, do you think I'm worthy?
- 11:56And that makes such a difference in our lives.
- 11:59Amen. Wow, that is so good and so
- 12:02true. And I feel like with our society
- 12:06and especially with social media you had to mention it's really
- 12:10hard, hard on our hearts and how can it contribute to the
- 12:15struggle of being overlooked? What do you what do you think
- 12:20about social media especially? Yeah, I mean, so humans have
- 12:24always had a need for attention. If that's a biological human
- 12:27need, we've always had it. But we haven't always had a a
- 12:31outlet. For getting more attention or
- 12:34being more overlooked than ever before.
- 12:36And so I think social media is kind of like proof to me that
- 12:40everybody longs to be seen. It kind of it reveals our deep
- 12:45and abiding need to be known and seen.
- 12:47Because for I would say most of us, if we really get down to the
- 12:51bottom line, why we keep clicking up in the app and why
- 12:55we keep showing up, it's to either be seen or to see others.
- 12:59And that's the motivation, right?
- 13:00To go viral, to finally get that pose that gives you some sort of
- 13:04Instagram fame or whatever it is.
- 13:07And so this idea sitting on this pain point, really social media
- 13:11is hitting on a pain point of humanity and the idea that we
- 13:14could be seen more than anyone, you know, in our little
- 13:17communities and we could be seen by people we don't even know,
- 13:20thousands and millions. Also comes with the flip side,
- 13:24which is that we can feel more alone and overlooked than ever
- 13:27before. And so social media, I think it
- 13:30is really hard in our hearts because I think we walk in
- 13:33thinking we got this, it's fine, it's not going to affect me.
- 13:38And then we spend a little time and we're not realizing the the
- 13:42depth that it's that it's playing with in our hearts and
- 13:46minds that there's a real need. And that when we do feel unseen,
- 13:50when our when our post doesn't get as many likes as we thought,
- 13:52or when we see that person who's getting all this accolade in
- 13:56their comments, it does something inside of us.
- 13:59When we're not getting that need filled first by the Lord.
- 14:02And I've certainly experienced that personally.
- 14:04I don't know if you have ever felt the same way, but social
- 14:07media is hard. Yeah, yeah, I know.
- 14:10I was just mentoring a young girl and I think, I mean it can
- 14:16be all ages of women that we struggle with comments, likes,
- 14:22you know, on our posts. And one of the things that she
- 14:25was sharing was, oh, I'm doubting my post based on the
- 14:31comments and lack of comments I should say.
- 14:35And so and it's funny because it's just happened in the last
- 14:38week and I'm like, you know, and and I'm preaching to myself when
- 14:43I was sharing to this little, this mentary, this young girl.
- 14:47And I said, and I said, look, I said it's so easy for us to grab
- 14:52on, especially with social media, grab on to others
- 14:56opinions about what we wrote about, what we posted about.
- 15:00And if it doesn't meet our expectations, then we start
- 15:04feeling bad about ourselves and we start doubting.
- 15:08Did my posts, you know, even makes sense?
- 15:11Or, like you're saying, I'm not worthy enough to have somebody
- 15:15comment on the post and you start taking it from, you know,
- 15:19maybe what you wrote to to it now being a personal attack.
- 15:23You know, like maybe it's like nobody.
- 15:25Likes me, you know, And then you know, you're just going down the
- 15:28spiral. Right down, down, down.
- 15:31And so to raise that young girl back up and to build her back
- 15:37up, it's going back to what God says, you know, that we do
- 15:42things for him. We don't do things for people.
- 15:45And let's do a heart check. You know where.
- 15:48What was your heart position when you posted this?
- 15:51What was your heart position when you wrote about this, this
- 15:55caption? Was this something that the Lord
- 15:58gave you? We just have to be so careful
- 16:00and just catch ourselves and remind ourselves.
- 16:03Of the truth of scripture and what the Lord says as we are
- 16:08valuable and worthy that no social media post ever dictates
- 16:14that right. Right, exactly.
- 16:17OK, so let's let's look at it in a biblical lens and some of the
- 16:21stories that we see where there are people just like us, you
- 16:26know, feeling overlooked and how God shows up.
- 16:31Yeah, So one of the sort of starting points in scripture for
- 16:37that is to look at the one who gave God the name Elroy, the God
- 16:41who sees. Because her story is really
- 16:45impactful in thinking about the character of God.
- 16:48In fact, in the book I go through four different biblical
- 16:51stories about people who encountered the seeing God, and
- 16:54hers is one of them. But it's Hagar, and a lot of
- 16:56people are familiar with her story.
- 16:59She's the Egyptian servant. She's in the household of
- 17:02Abraham and Sarah way back in the Old Testament.
- 17:05And when God gives Abraham the covenant that he's going to be
- 17:08the father of many nations. Sarah sitting over there.
- 17:11She's old and she's barren and she thinks, well, I don't know
- 17:15how that's going to work out with me.
- 17:16So she tries to help God along by offering her servant Hagar to
- 17:21be Abraham's wife and the shortcut method the.
- 17:25Shortcut method doesn't usually work out well with the Lord, no?
- 17:30And that's right. So Hagar becomes pregnant and it
- 17:35says The Bible says Hagar looks at Sarah with contempt because.
- 17:39All of a sudden I think Hagar realizes I'm not just a slave
- 17:41girl, I am a the mother of the only heir of Abraham.
- 17:46And Sarah is nothing because she can't have children.
- 17:49And in that Sarah becomes of course very hurt.
- 17:53And the Bible says that she treats, she deals harshly with
- 17:57Hagar and so it's a picture of. So it's a very difficult, nasty
- 18:02situation between these two women.
- 18:05It gets so bad, in fact, that Hagar decides to flee.
- 18:09And so this young pregnant slave girl with nothing finds herself
- 18:15in the middle of a wilderness. She's headed back home to Egypt
- 18:18because the Bible says she's sitting on the wilderness of
- 18:20Sure, which is the route back home to Egypt.
- 18:24Sure is the desert that the Israelites wandered in for 40
- 18:27years. So we don't know that she's even
- 18:29going to make it back. It's going to be a difficult
- 18:30journey. And and it says an Angel of the
- 18:34Lord meets Hagar there. But we know that this Angel, the
- 18:37Lord isn't. Michael or Gabriel, or some of
- 18:40the angels that we think of, because Hagar calls him God.
- 18:43And so we know that God met Hagar at the spring of water.
- 18:48And God? He talks to her.
- 18:50He asks her Hagar. He calls her by name.
- 18:52That's one beautiful thing. He asks her Hagar, where have
- 18:55you come from? Where are you going?
- 18:57Even though he knows the answer to that, he's inviting her into
- 18:59this conversation to kind of consider the situation at hand,
- 19:04and God asks her to return to Sarah.
- 19:07And that's a big, that's a very big request of God.
- 19:10And then God gives her this beautiful promise about her
- 19:15child. So he says it's going to be a
- 19:16boy. He says you're going to name him
- 19:18Ishmael, and he's going to be a wild donkey of a man, which
- 19:21sounds terrible. But what it really means is that
- 19:24even though he's going to be wild, he's going to be a ruler
- 19:27and says the people will be underneath him.
- 19:29And so imagine being a servant. A slave girl from Egypt in this
- 19:33household where you had no choice in being married off to
- 19:36this man and having his child, but realizing that your son
- 19:39would rule over people. And so it's this really
- 19:42beautiful promise. And Hagar's response is to say
- 19:44you are Elroy, the God who sees me.
- 19:47I have seen him who looks after me.
- 19:49And I think that her story is so beautiful because you know
- 19:55Hagar, she could have just been forgotten.
- 19:58And God didn't have to meet her. He didn't have to find her at
- 20:01the edge of that wilderness. She's kind of a messy story that
- 20:07might have been easier to sweep under the rug and but God
- 20:11didn't. And I think that that shows so
- 20:13much his character that God's not just seeing Abraham and
- 20:17Sarah, who are of course part of the covenant.
- 20:20They're going to be part of the lineage of Jesus.
- 20:22Their son is going to be the Covenantal Child.
- 20:25But he sees Hagar this sort of messed up.
- 20:28Her sons not going to be in the covenants, not going to be the
- 20:30lineage of Jesus. And yet he sees her, he chooses
- 20:33her, he values her. And he allows her to see a part
- 20:37of his character and call him that name for the first time,
- 20:40which is just so beautiful for people like me.
- 20:43And maybe your listeners who have felt sort of on the outside
- 20:47of things, who aren't the best at things, they're not the
- 20:49Abraham and Sarah of the situation, and yet God has room
- 20:53for them and meets them and sees them where they are.
- 20:57I love that, Yeah. That's one of my favorite
- 20:59stories of all time. That's so great because it just
- 21:03reminds us he's in the details of our life.
- 21:05I mean, he sees everything and. And that there's no favoritism
- 21:10with the Lord. He he loves us, and deeply so.
- 21:14What are some practical ways we can trade, feeling overlooked
- 21:19for a lifestyle of living seen? How can we apply these things to
- 21:24our lives? Yeah, so in the book I go
- 21:27through these different stories, right?
- 21:29So they're Hagar and then it's Moses and Paul and then Jesus.
- 21:34Not in that order actually, but all of them sort of teach us
- 21:37something about a life that's live seen by God.
- 21:39And Hagar's is the the character trait of obedience because God
- 21:45asks her to go back to Sarah. This is like this is a hard
- 21:49decision for her and she she obeys, but she obeys out of a
- 21:53love response to the God who sees.
- 21:56And I don't know that Hagar went back to a very good situation
- 21:58because we know later on down the line her and Sarah get into
- 22:01it again. She's kicked out again.
- 22:03It's it's. I don't know that it was ever a
- 22:05great situation for these two women.
- 22:07And and then we see in Moses's story and this beautiful picture
- 22:11of confidence, this is the second character trait because
- 22:15Moses encounters God right at the burning Bush.
- 22:18And if you go read Exodus 4, you'll see a version of Moses we
- 22:21don't often think about because he's very self-conscious.
- 22:26He's sort of like a shell of a man because he's been, he's been
- 22:31on the run from Egypt for 40 years and he says he argues with
- 22:35God. He says, God, I can't do it and
- 22:37someone else would be better than me and and just just
- 22:40please, like take someone else to do this job.
- 22:43He's suffering. Yeah, a lot of insecurity.
- 22:46Don't you love that Moses? And God instills Moses with this
- 22:52confidence by showing him what Moses, if you will, if you will
- 22:57step out, I will come through. And it's this beautiful idea
- 23:01that Moses wasn't some inherent wonderful leader.
- 23:05In fact, he needed Aaron to come along and be his support system.
- 23:09But God, through Moses leaning on him, made Moses into one of
- 23:14the greatest leaders of all times.
- 23:16And then in Paul's story in the Damascus Rd. we see this works
- 23:21based very religious, you know, zealot of a person encounter
- 23:26Jesus and then transform into a man who was humble and lived his
- 23:32life with a gospel perspective. He just lived to see people know
- 23:35Christ and totally changed his point of view, and that kind of
- 23:41goes back to applying that to us.
- 23:43A gospel perspective for someone who feels overlooked is this
- 23:46idea that we don't have to work for the approval of others.
- 23:49We don't have to work to be the best, as Paul was doing for so
- 23:52many years, but we can see people as souls in need of a
- 23:55savior. We don't have to get our worth
- 23:57from them. We can let them.
- 23:59And then Jesus is kind of a different example because of
- 24:02course he is God. So there's never a moment where
- 24:04he's not being seen by God or he realizes.
- 24:07But there's this beautiful moment when he's being baptized
- 24:10in the Jordan River, you know, that the heavens open up and the
- 24:12Holy Spirit descends like a dev, and God says, this is my son,
- 24:16and with him I'm well pleased. And Jesus is sort of introduced
- 24:21into his earthly ministry then. And we see in Jesus this
- 24:25character trait of meekness, which is something I spent a lot
- 24:29of time researching when I wrote the book.
- 24:31Because I didn't. I don't think I really
- 24:32understood what it was. I thought I did.
- 24:34And then I realized I didn't. Yeah.
- 24:36I thought this was timidity and being weak and a doormat.
- 24:40And people had called me meek in my life in a not a positive way.
- 24:45And but when I saw that Jesus was meek, thought really, I
- 24:49can't be a negative thing. Jesus is meek.
- 24:51And so I learned that meekness was this, like quiet confidence
- 24:56and and a perspective of eternity.
- 25:00That said, I don't have to enter into every fight or defend
- 25:03myself in every situation, because I know my father sees me
- 25:07and my father has eternity for me.
- 25:08And so those four traits, it's obedience, meekness, confidence,
- 25:14and a gospel perspective, is what I identify in the Bible and
- 25:18also in my own life as more ways to begin to transform when we
- 25:23live seen by God. That's so beautiful, Whitney.
- 25:26Thank you. What wisdom you are imparting on
- 25:30us and thinking about situations in my own life and I know our
- 25:34listeners doing the same thing and.
- 25:37Your book is incredible. Now I love ending in a take
- 25:41away. Is there something that you can
- 25:43leave with the listener here to ponder on or take action in?
- 25:47Yeah, absolutely. Well, I think it's the idea that
- 25:51sometimes we read Scripture and we see the, you know, the Hagar
- 25:54stories and the burning Bush and the road to Damascus.
- 25:56And we think, like, where's my big moment?
- 25:59But just to encourage your listeners that Jesus, it's in
- 26:03Jesus. He's already accomplished our
- 26:05big moment and his scripture, His word is what we get to go
- 26:09back to over and over for that that revelation, that aha
- 26:15moment. And so sometimes we can have it
- 26:17in our head, right? OK, God sees me and loves me.
- 26:20But like the old saying said, there's there's a big distance
- 26:23between your head and your heart.
- 26:24And I would encourage your listener, Do you know it or do
- 26:30you know it in your heart? And sometimes it takes a lot of
- 26:35time. And honestly, repeating God's
- 26:37word over your heart and praying God, do I really believe this to
- 26:42be true, That you love me and that you see me and that is your
- 26:45character? Because if you don't starve
- 26:47there, none of the transformation in your life can
- 26:50really happen. And I know for me it took a long
- 26:52time to really come from my head to my heart and that
- 26:55realization. So I would encourage your
- 26:57listeners 1 easy place to go that a lot of people are
- 27:00familiar with is to read Psalm 139.
- 27:02Because it talks about God's omnipresence and his
- 27:05omniscience, that he's everywhere all the time and that
- 27:08he knows everything all at once. And these are two beautiful
- 27:11realities that because of those things, God cannot overlook his
- 27:15children. And I had a time in my life
- 27:17where I read that chapter of scripture every day and and God
- 27:21transformed my heart to really begin to internalize those
- 27:24things. So I'd encourage your listener
- 27:26to do that. Thank.
- 27:27You, Whitney. Hey, where can others get those

- 28:00So. Thank you for coming on here.
- 28:03This was just so impactful and encouraging.
- 28:07Inspiring. Because we all have gone through
- 28:10those seasons or we won't go through the seasons of feeling
- 28:15overlooked. And it's like, OK, what do we do
- 28:17with it? How do we respond?
- 28:19So I love your message of encouragement to help us, to
- 28:23support us the different ways that we can look to Jesus when
- 28:29we go through those seasons in life.
