- 0:34What is going on, everybody?
- 0:37Welcome to Lunch with the Clydesdale.
- 0:39My name's Scott Switzer.
- 0:40I am the Clydesdale.
- 0:41Today is my lunch hour.
- 0:43We are taking a break from the workday.
- 0:47It's a Friday.
- 0:48Glad to be a Friday.
- 0:50It seems to be a little bit
- 0:52of a slow news day,
- 0:53but we're going to get through it.
- 0:55We're going to make some stuff up.
- 0:57I'm going to start with my dart throw.
- 0:59I'm going to try something new today.
- 1:01Going lefty.
- 1:02Going lefty at the dart
- 1:04board because right-handed
- 1:05has not been working,
- 1:07so we are going lefty.
- 1:10Maybe.
- 1:14Not too bad for a left-handed shot.
- 1:19For lefty,
- 1:20I will show you where we ended up.
- 1:25I don't know if you can see that.
- 1:28There it is.
- 1:29It is kind of down and to the left.
- 1:33a little bit, but we're on the board.
- 1:36The last couple of
- 1:37right-handed throws have
- 1:38not got me on the board.
- 1:40So that way I don't have to
- 1:41go up and over the computer that way.
- 1:44Uh, so we're just going to try it.
- 1:47Um, so there we are.
- 1:50That's today's dartboard throw.
- 1:52Uh,
- 1:54what's going on Meredith, Kenneth, Corey,
- 1:56Jody, uh, lunchtime selling kitchens,
- 2:00listening along, sell all the kitchens,
- 2:03Jody, sell all the kitchens.
- 2:09Um, yeah, I just had some grapes.
- 2:14Um, and they were teeny tiny little grapes,
- 2:18but they were so good.
- 2:19So good.
- 2:21Um,
- 2:22really enjoyed those.
- 2:24And I don't know if you guys can tell,
- 2:25but got the new haircut.
- 2:27Um, so my hair's not super long anymore.
- 2:31A lot more, a lot easier to take care of,
- 2:35um,
- 2:35a lot easier to get ready for these
- 2:36shows and for my,
- 2:38my corporate meetings that
- 2:40I have to do throughout the day.
- 2:42Uh,
- 2:42so really excited that I got that done
- 2:44yesterday,
- 2:45got to catch up with my
- 2:47hairdresser and got all that done.
- 2:49So that was awesome.
- 2:52Um,
- 2:53But yeah, like I said,
- 2:55it's been a slow kind of day.
- 2:58Not much is happening.
- 2:59I'm hearing rumors that
- 3:02there's some difficulty in
- 3:03getting the stream up.
- 3:08I'm not a member of the seven East's chat,
- 3:10but I'm hearing in the chat
- 3:11that there's rumors that, um,
- 3:13they're having trouble with power,
- 3:15having trouble with the stream.
- 3:18And, uh,
- 3:19hopefully we'll have something
- 3:20this afternoon from NorCal.
- 3:22Cause I'd really like to watch it.
- 3:24I said at the end of
- 3:25yesterday's show that I
- 3:27will give a lot more, um,
- 3:31grace to them because of
- 3:32the situation this weekend.
- 3:35Um,
- 3:39Uh, that ain't a rumor.
- 3:41That's a fact.
- 3:44Um, stream won't be live.
- 3:45They're filming coming back and uploading.
- 3:49Uh, what a bummer.
- 3:52Um, yeah, I kind of stinks.
- 4:00Um, I don't know.
- 4:06I would think that you would know, uh,
- 4:09prior um you I think you
- 4:16would know some of the
- 4:17conditions prior to you're
- 4:18outside you're in a park
- 4:21you probably know you don't
- 4:22have like broadband
- 4:25internet being piped in um
- 4:29so you'd probably have to
- 4:29use hot spots and I don't
- 4:31even know how that would
- 4:32work I've I've used them at
- 4:33some of the events that
- 4:35I've worked at to just upload stuff um
- 4:42I don't know.
- 4:50Um, heard it was an internet issue.
- 4:52The only feasible option was
- 4:53to rent a whole tower.
- 4:56Okay.
- 4:59I know like where I work,
- 5:00we have hotspots.
- 5:01Uh,
- 5:02when I would do trainings in remote
- 5:03locations, we would take those with us to,
- 5:06um,
- 5:08to be able to get internet where there
- 5:09wasn't internet available.
- 5:11Um,
- 5:13but that still works off of
- 5:14a cell tower and that, and you know,
- 5:17how loaded that cell tower would be,
- 5:19would really affect the
- 5:22bandwidth of anything you were doing.
- 5:24So, um, they had star link.
- 5:31They tried to use even raise,
- 5:32sixty feet in the air, not working.
- 5:35Wow.
- 5:37That is crazy.
- 5:39That's crazy in this day and age.
- 5:45I think internet has got to
- 5:47be one of the most
- 5:48important commodities in today's world.
- 5:54I've been to this through
- 5:56work and through some conferences.
- 5:58I've seen this guy speak a
- 5:59couple times and he
- 6:01actually says that your
- 6:02national economy can be
- 6:06based on the cost of internet per person.
- 6:13there are countries that are
- 6:14gaining ground economically
- 6:18because they have free
- 6:20internet throughout their
- 6:21country and um and so I
- 6:27think that that's
- 6:31fascinating that in the
- 6:34capital of california
- 6:35because they're in sacramento correct
- 6:38we were still having issues
- 6:39just getting basic internet, um,
- 6:43to a park.
- 6:44Uh,
- 6:45and if you're using Starlink and not
- 6:47being able to get it,
- 6:48that's even more fascinating to me.
- 6:52Um, cause you know,
- 6:53like they're using Starlink
- 6:56in the desert in
- 6:56Afghanistan and can't get
- 6:59it in California is mind boggling.
- 7:03Um,
- 7:05Meredith says,
- 7:06just how often the boonies are they?
- 7:09Yeah.
- 7:10I don't know.
- 7:14I also know, like, I don't know.
- 7:19We'll see.
- 7:25Aaron Frazier says,
- 7:26common for rural communities.
- 7:34that that was my thought
- 7:35corey starlink is supposed
- 7:36to work anywhere isn't it
- 7:37like satellite that's what
- 7:40that was my that was my
- 7:42understanding as well um
- 7:48but yeah now again we're
- 7:51not talking like just
- 7:52trying to make a phone call
- 7:53we're trying to talk about
- 7:55broadcasting an event over that internet
- 8:02So we're not talking just a
- 8:03basic phone call.
- 8:05And I'm sure the bandwidth
- 8:06that a phone call takes
- 8:08compared to the bandwidth a
- 8:11broadcast would take would
- 8:13be exponentially higher for
- 8:14the broadcast.
- 8:20So it could be just that,
- 8:22the limitations of the
- 8:23Starlink trying to get the
- 8:25bandwidth of a broadcast
- 8:27out of Sacramento.
- 8:32But we'll trust that they'll
- 8:33do their best to,
- 8:35because I would think that why edit it,
- 8:37right?
- 8:37Just record it,
- 8:39get back to a place where
- 8:40you have internet, upload it quickly,
- 8:42and then you can view it.
- 8:47That seems to be the style
- 8:48they want anyway.
- 8:49So hopefully that'll work.
- 8:51Record it live, no editing, just go back,
- 8:56pump up the feed,
- 8:57and then be done with it.
- 9:00so yeah I guess that'll work
- 9:04today I mean they're
- 9:05already you know a couple
- 9:07hours behind me here in
- 9:08columbus so I'll just wait
- 9:11until it comes up and avoid
- 9:14a competition corner so I
- 9:16don't really know what
- 9:16anything is going on now I
- 9:19just have to avoid carolyn
- 9:20texting me during this
- 9:21thing um but other than
- 9:24that yeah we'll we'll
- 9:25figure it out that way
- 9:30I'm going to go ahead and
- 9:30give you my finalized picks
- 9:33for NorCal today.
- 9:37And this was done with the
- 9:38assumption that Emily and
- 9:41Bethany would not be there.
- 9:46So my picks on the women's
- 9:51side are fifth place.
- 9:54I'm going with Rebecca Fusile.
- 9:57Fourth place, Hattie Cano.
- 9:59She would have been higher
- 10:00if I knew that her shoulder
- 10:02was in good shape and ready to go.
- 10:06I have Carolyn in third.
- 10:10I have Kristen Holta in second.
- 10:13And Alex Kazan to win NorCal.
- 10:17So again, Rebecca Fuseli fifth,
- 10:20Hattie Cano fourth, Carolyn Prevost third,
- 10:23Kristen Holta second, Alex Kazan first.
- 10:30On the men's side,
- 10:31I'm going with Matt Brady to finish fifth,
- 10:35William Leahy to finish fourth,
- 10:38Nate Ackerman to finish third,
- 10:40Spencer Pancheck second,
- 10:43and Colton Mertens to win.
- 10:47So, again, Matt Brady fifth,
- 10:51William Leahy fourth, Nate Ackerman third,
- 10:55Spencer Pancheck second,
- 10:57Colton Mertens to win.
- 11:00And so the tickets would go
- 11:01to Alex Kazan and Kristen
- 11:04Holta on the women's side
- 11:06and Colton Mertens and
- 11:07Spencer Pancheck on the men's side.
- 11:12I'm sorry, not Colton.
- 11:14Colton already has his ticket.
- 11:15Spencer Pancheck and Nate
- 11:17Ackerman on the men's side.
- 11:23Yes,
- 11:23it's possible to stream content using
- 11:25Starlink,
- 11:25but the experience and quality
- 11:26may vary depending on
- 11:28factors like location.
- 11:30Looks like Corey looked it
- 11:31up and is giving me the
- 11:33Google device usage and
- 11:35Starlink network conditions.
- 11:37Starlink offers high speed
- 11:38internet with download
- 11:40speeds ranging from fifty to one fifty.
- 11:42A concern particularly for live streaming.
- 11:49may require adjustments to
- 11:50streaming settings which is
- 11:51generally sufficient for
- 11:53streaming high def and four
- 11:54k content however upload
- 11:56speeds and network
- 11:56reliability can sometimes
- 11:58be a factor I'm sure yeah
- 12:03aaron fraser many people
- 12:03saying the programming
- 12:04isn't good for colton I
- 12:06disagree um and I think
- 12:09other people disagree I
- 12:11think that if you listen to
- 12:13taylor and hillar go back
- 12:14and forth last night
- 12:16On the pre-show,
- 12:18Hiller does not think it's
- 12:19good for Colton.
- 12:21Taylor thinks it's very good
- 12:22for Colton and that Colton
- 12:23is going to do just fine
- 12:25and be hard to beat on a
- 12:26majority of these events.
- 12:30I think that Colton has
- 12:31closed a lot of his holes,
- 12:33and I think that this
- 12:35programming is fine for him.
- 12:50thoughts on who the odd events help hurt,
- 12:52like who can adapt to something new.
- 12:56I think the more athletic you are,
- 12:58the quicker you are to adapt.
- 13:01What I found fascinating to hear is
- 13:04that Taylor has already done
- 13:06lunging wall balls in the
- 13:08past because of his knee injury.
- 13:11He actually did them because
- 13:12it was easier on his knees
- 13:14than squatting.
- 13:16And so it's something that's
- 13:17been done in the past.
- 13:19But I think anytime that you
- 13:22put something together
- 13:23that's odd or different,
- 13:25the more athletic you are,
- 13:26the better you are prepared
- 13:29to modify and adapt.
- 13:31So I think that's why I have
- 13:33Carolyn in third.
- 13:35Because someone who has
- 13:36played hockey and won
- 13:38national championships in hockey,
- 13:40in soccer, in jujitsu,
- 13:43the athleticism that that
- 13:44woman possesses is going to
- 13:46help her to adapt to all of
- 13:48these new items.
- 13:52I also think that someone
- 13:55like Spencer is really good
- 13:57at adapting to things like
- 13:58that because he played sports young.
- 14:08And I see what you're saying
- 14:09about Bill being the most athletic male,
- 14:13but Hiller says he's not
- 14:14good at adapting to things.
- 14:18So that was odd to me
- 14:19because I would have
- 14:20thought that Bill would
- 14:21have been the most athletic as well.
- 14:30I also think Emily Rolfe is there.
- 14:32Taylor said he saw her husband on site.
- 14:35that's good hopefully she is
- 14:37feeling good and can do
- 14:38well uh ken walters it's
- 14:44near perfect for colton his
- 14:45engine and ability to go
- 14:46dark is is in anything new
- 14:51yeah I think that I think
- 14:52the one event that kind of
- 14:54concerns me with colton is the gator pool
- 14:58or the truck pull and moving
- 15:00the D-balls into the trunk
- 15:02of the gator before he moves it.
- 15:04It's just covering that
- 15:05distance with weight.
- 15:07Someone like Bill with a
- 15:08much longer stride is going
- 15:10to be better at that than
- 15:12Colton with the shorter stride.
- 15:15And then pulling that gator,
- 15:18it's going to be short,
- 15:19choppy steps for Colton.
- 15:21And maybe that is for Bill too.
- 15:22I don't know how grippy the
- 15:25ground is going to be for
- 15:26them doing that.
- 15:29So that's going to be interesting.
- 15:31So that's the one event I
- 15:33would be a little bit
- 15:35reluctant to call Colton on.
- 15:43Ken says he moves pigs and trucks all day.
- 15:45He'll be fine.
- 15:46He'll be fine doing it.
- 15:47I just don't know about the
- 15:48speed at which he will do it.
- 15:53It's still covering a
- 15:54distance with weight.
- 15:57And I think in those cases,
- 15:59the longer stride will help.
- 16:07So,
- 16:07but we'll find out soon enough for sure.
- 16:13The last thing I really have on my agenda,
- 16:15and then I'll open it up to
- 16:17you guys with whatever,
- 16:20is I was watching Grant's
- 16:23thing about CrossFit messing
- 16:25up I think it was he put
- 16:27out this morning and I
- 16:34don't disagree with with
- 16:35that concept that CrossFit
- 16:37screw up screwed up uh no
- 16:41Jay Birch we're not talking
- 16:41about us running um I think
- 16:47he's saying that NorCal
- 16:48should have five to ten
- 16:50spots to give to the games
- 16:51because of the field that's there
- 16:54I think someone said he was
- 16:57high for saying that.
- 16:58I don't disagree with that either.
- 16:59I think he's high for saying
- 17:00five to ten spots should be
- 17:02awarded out of NorCal.
- 17:04The fields are not that deep.
- 17:07But I do think that they
- 17:09messed up where they did
- 17:12put the online...
- 17:15qualifying event in the
- 17:17middle it should have been
- 17:18at the end I think we all
- 17:20can agree to that now I
- 17:21think dave castro agrees
- 17:22with that he said so in the
- 17:24week in review but when
- 17:26this season was started
- 17:28there was going to be no
- 17:29in-person qualifying event
- 17:31it was going to be just the
- 17:33open the semi-final and the
- 17:36in-affiliate semi-final and
- 17:37the games it wasn't until
- 17:40the season was put together and a couple
- 17:44event organizers came to Dave and said,
- 17:46hey,
- 17:47if we put together an in-person event,
- 17:50can we have a couple qualifying spots?
- 17:53And CrossFit changed their
- 17:54mind in what they were going to do,
- 17:56and they allowed a handful
- 17:58of events to come to them
- 18:00and then offered them a
- 18:02couple qualifying spots to
- 18:05have those in-person opportunities.
- 18:08So again, the cart was before the horse,
- 18:12and then we changed the
- 18:13structure of the season
- 18:14after the fact and tried to
- 18:16make the square peg fit in
- 18:19the round hole.
- 18:22And that's why it's messed up.
- 18:24It's messed up because we
- 18:25didn't have a seamless plan
- 18:27from the beginning of the season forward.
- 18:29In fact, at one point, we only had,
- 18:32I don't even know how many,
- 18:33I think there were nine,
- 18:34ended up being nine qualifying events.
- 18:37In the beginning, we had eight qualifying
- 18:39And then they put out the
- 18:40rules with all the numbers
- 18:42and then they brought in
- 18:43NorCal last minute after
- 18:45the fact to do one right
- 18:48before the season started
- 18:50and then had to modify all
- 18:51the numbers after that.
- 18:55I believe that next season,
- 18:59if you're going to use the
- 19:00same components,
- 19:01which who the hell knows if
- 19:02they're going to do that, um,
- 19:08you have all of the
- 19:09in-person events first with
- 19:12the in online piece last.
- 19:15And that is your last chance
- 19:17qualifier with whatever spots are left.
- 19:21And,
- 19:24and that is the best scenario in this
- 19:28current structure of the season.
- 19:31The other thing I think that
- 19:32is making things messy is the,
- 19:35that you're letting all of
- 19:36these in-person events make
- 19:38up their own rules.
- 19:41Some are regionally locked, some are not.
- 19:46And why I say this is you
- 19:49also cut from forty to thirty.
- 19:53And you could say that the
- 19:55bottom ten of the forty
- 19:57were not great athletes
- 19:59compared to the top thirty.
- 20:02But what we did is we cut
- 20:03from forty to thirty,
- 20:04but then we kept some
- 20:05regionally locked qualifying events,
- 20:08and now we have those same
- 20:10people from the ten going
- 20:12again to this year.
- 20:17So here, I'm going to share my screen.
- 20:19This is the lineup we have
- 20:21at the games so far.
- 20:28So this is on the women's side.
- 20:29These are the people who have registered.
- 20:31So I know like Tia's not on here yet,
- 20:36but we have Mariana Meza.
- 20:37Whoops.
- 20:39Mariana Meza, Lexi Neely, Brooke Wells,
- 20:41Christina Levitic, Levitic Tatic,
- 20:43whatever.
- 20:44Levita Takis, Emily DeRoy, Lucy McGonigal,
- 20:48Louisa Marquez, Maria Camila Quintero,
- 20:53Sydney McAlishan, Annika Greer,
- 20:55Sierra Maya, Seung Young Choi,
- 20:58Alexis Raptus, Haley Adams,
- 21:00Olivia Kerstetter, Miriam Von Rohrer,
- 21:04Fee Sagafi, Amy Kringle, Claudia Gluck,
- 21:08Gracie Walton, Ariel Lowen, Maddie Sturt,
- 21:11Abigail Doman, Jennifer Muir,
- 21:12Lucy Campbell.
- 21:15this is not the best thirty
- 21:17we could get to the
- 21:18crossfit games when I'm
- 21:23reading down these names at
- 21:25the top of the list there
- 21:27are names here that are
- 21:28definitely not in the top
- 21:30thirty so then if we go
- 21:32over to the men and you
- 21:34look at the list we end up
- 21:35with isaac newman
- 21:38Morteza Sagat, Ty Jenkins, Peter Ellis,
- 21:41Toby Buckland, Jason Hopper,
- 21:43Harry Lightfoot, Chris Ibarra,
- 21:46Justin Medeiros, Caelan Souza,
- 21:49Austin Hatfield, Ricky Garrard, Roman,
- 21:52Dallin Pepper, Moritz Fiebig,
- 21:56Callum Clements, Bronislaw Linkiewicz,
- 21:59Tudor Magda, Colton Mertens, Jay Crouch,
- 22:02Henrique Moriera, Colin Bossard,
- 22:05Enrico Zanoni,
- 22:07James Bragg, Nick Matthew, Jeff Adler.
- 22:13Eric Mackey says, fix one thing every year,
- 22:15screw up two new things.
- 22:25Aaron Frazier,
- 22:25the athletes don't even
- 22:26understand the season
- 22:27they're competing in.
- 22:42Um, Ken Walters has a, uh,
- 22:44an American version of this,
- 22:47but we do have to allow
- 22:49Europe and Australia into the mix.
- 22:55We know that there are
- 22:56countries that are better
- 22:57than others at CrossFit at this time.
- 23:11Aaron Frazier.
- 23:12That mail list is missing
- 23:13one of the top five fittest
- 23:14from the open.
- 23:15It is.
- 23:27We're waiting on an
- 23:28investigation to find out
- 23:29if he still is one of the
- 23:30top five fittest.
- 23:38Dee Reed says there is no
- 23:40perfect solution.
- 23:42Every sport has these issues.
- 23:43You can only go by who
- 23:45competes and who wins.
- 23:46It does not matter who could
- 23:47be there or who could win.
- 23:50I disagree with that to some degree.
- 23:52The other thing is most
- 23:53sports have a plan going
- 23:55into the season and don't
- 23:57flip the switch on that
- 23:58plan midway through.
- 24:00And that's what seems to
- 24:01happen every year.
- 24:11And that seems to be what
- 24:12happens every year with CrossFit.
- 24:22Halpin says the issue isn't
- 24:23necessarily the current system.
- 24:24It's that the system changes
- 24:26so often and changes mid-season.
- 24:35Like changing programming or
- 24:36a gym every few months.
- 24:53Ken Walters, I disagree.
- 24:54Other sports are set for years.
- 24:57Maybe a wild card change or something,
- 24:58but never an entire season change format.
- 25:21And if you change the rules,
- 25:22it goes into a vote with
- 25:25the ownership of that league,
- 25:28and they talk about it,
- 25:29and they vote on it, and they discuss it.
- 25:31It's just not done in the flash of a pan.
- 25:49Okay.
- 25:57Man, there's a lot here.
- 26:01So what does need to change
- 26:02to get that stability?
- 26:03I think you have to have a
- 26:04plan for what the season is going to be,
- 26:06and you stick to that plan for the year.
- 26:08That's it.
- 26:14Doug says, that's not true.
- 26:15In junior aquatics,
- 26:16we often do not know when
- 26:18or where a zone qualifier will be,
- 26:20regardless of the athletics
- 26:21trained for the what if.
- 26:26but I think there's a lot of
- 26:27examples where they do know
- 26:29where the qualifiers are in the season.
- 26:33And you're going to find
- 26:34outliers like this and
- 26:35CrossFit that do not.
- 26:47You aren't going to see
- 26:47growth without sound mechanics,
- 26:49consistency over time at
- 26:51relative high intensity.
- 26:52Some one smart once said that.
- 27:08Doug,
- 27:08I'm not trying to compare it to a
- 27:10professional sport.
- 27:11I'm trying to compare it to
- 27:12just other leagues.
- 27:15When I do my rec league softball,
- 27:17I knew my schedule of games
- 27:20for the season,
- 27:21and I knew that the top
- 27:23four went to the playoffs.
- 27:26I knew that,
- 27:26and it was not a professional league,
- 27:28but it was run in a professional manner.
- 27:41I think having a seasoned
- 27:42structure is something that
- 27:44can be done and can be understood.
- 27:47If the athletes don't even
- 27:48know how they qualify,
- 27:49we've got a problem.
- 27:57Edging says,
- 27:58I just say the serenity prayer.
- 28:01That helps too.
- 28:05Other sports are in some
- 28:06cases over a century old.
- 28:07I wonder how long it took
- 28:09for them to stabilize to
- 28:10the formats that we know today.
- 28:14It's a good point.
- 28:21Eric Mackey worldwide
- 28:22rankings was a good idea in theory,
- 28:24but holes pokes before the
- 28:25season even started not vetted properly.
- 28:29Yeah, I think that's it.
- 28:32really anxious to see who's
- 28:33gonna buy crossfit because
- 28:34they may make some changes
- 28:36that will be good and
- 28:37things that we need to see
- 28:38and I just would like for
- 28:43so for there was a stable
- 28:44time in crossfit from
- 28:47twenty eleven to twenty
- 28:51eighteen where we knew what
- 28:53the season structure was
- 28:56The regions may have modified,
- 28:59but we knew the structure
- 29:00was open regional games.
- 29:05And that was when CrossFit
- 29:07grew the fastest.
- 29:10To the point where if you
- 29:11believe some of the media
- 29:13people out there,
- 29:15that major networks wanted
- 29:17to air the CrossFit games
- 29:19and the regionals after the
- 29:30Then it all blew up, and ever since then,
- 29:32we have not had the same
- 29:33season two years in a row.
- 29:43Shelby Neal didn't know she
- 29:44was eligible to compete at NorCal.
- 29:46She thought it was regional-based.
- 29:50That's a problem.
- 29:55There are a lot of good
- 29:56ideas that never get time
- 29:57to grow on the vine.
- 29:59Exactly.
- 30:00I'm not saying that some of
- 30:01the structures they put
- 30:01together were bad.
- 30:05Some of them had good ideas in them,
- 30:06but we never left them in
- 30:07place long enough to allow
- 30:10them to mature and grow and
- 30:13to be understood.
- 30:20So.
- 30:23The last thing I wanted to
- 30:24address in Grant's little
- 30:27rant that he put out there today was,
- 30:30and that's Kipping It Real.
- 30:31Grant from Kipping It Real
- 30:33put out a video.
- 30:35He also talked about the WFP.
- 30:38And I have two things about
- 30:39his statement that just
- 30:41have been grinding my gears for a while.
- 30:43And that is that the WFP is
- 30:46not the CrossFit Games.
- 30:49comparing tour stop one to
- 30:50the crossfit games is just
- 30:52not fair tour stop one is
- 30:55one component to their
- 30:58their ongoing season the
- 31:00drama has yet to build it
- 31:02was the first time we got
- 31:03any data tour stop two will
- 31:06get some more data and the
- 31:08leaderboard will shuffle
- 31:09and then things change and
- 31:11it becomes more dramatic
- 31:14then we go to the world
- 31:15championships and then
- 31:16there's even more drama and
- 31:18it's going to build there
- 31:20has been no time to allow
- 31:21that season to develop and
- 31:24build I'm not saying that
- 31:28the crossfit games are not
- 31:29the pinnacle of of the
- 31:32crossfit games season or
- 31:34the crossfit season or the
- 31:35fitness season or whatever
- 31:36we're calling it these days
- 31:39But to compare it to Tour
- 31:41Stop One is unfair to Tour Stop One.
- 31:43That was just the start of their season.
- 31:48And then he made the
- 31:49statement that the WFP
- 31:51makes you pay back your
- 31:54contract with your winnings.
- 31:57Payback is not the right term.
- 32:00The athlete signed a
- 32:02contract for minimum
- 32:04earnings in the season.
- 32:07So when they start the season, they know,
- 32:10at a minimum, I'm going to make this.
- 32:13You can accumulate winnings
- 32:15that are greater than that
- 32:17contract signing and make more money.
- 32:21But at a minimum,
- 32:22you're getting X number of dollars.
- 32:26They don't give it to you and then say,
- 32:29you didn't win enough, pay it back.
- 32:31Or, hey, you won, here's the check,
- 32:34pay it back to us.
- 32:36It's not a payback.
- 32:38It is a, hey,
- 32:40we're signing you and we're
- 32:41guaranteeing that you will
- 32:43make at least this amount of money.
- 32:47Then as the season plays out,
- 32:50you can win more than what
- 32:52that minimum is.
- 32:54And if you win more than the minimum,
- 32:55you get the overage in
- 32:58addition to your minimum.
- 33:05Jaybert says it sounds like a loan.
- 33:07It is not a loan because you
- 33:09never have to pay it back.
- 33:12Even if you go through the
- 33:14season and you never win an
- 33:15event or never win a dollar,
- 33:17you are guaranteed that
- 33:19minimum amount of money for
- 33:20the season and you never
- 33:22have to pay it back.
- 33:25All it's saying is that if
- 33:27you do win and you win more
- 33:30than that minimum,
- 33:31you get to win all of that prize money.
- 33:36And you don't even need the
- 33:37minimum part of our contract.
- 33:48Ken says,
- 33:49that's the athlete's
- 33:50responsibility to
- 33:51understand their sport no matter what.
- 33:53That's like an athlete saying,
- 33:54I didn't know that was a
- 33:56banned substance to your research,
- 33:58Shelby.
- 34:06current structure has hq
- 34:07dependent on third parties
- 34:09keeping the season afloat
- 34:10did any of them make money
- 34:12I you'd have to ask them
- 34:14but I don't it be hard to
- 34:19imagine many of the events
- 34:21making money torian probably made money
- 34:38Jonathan Ortega said,
- 34:39I thought it was based on
- 34:41Region II since all the others were.
- 34:44Not all the others.
- 34:45There were only three that
- 34:47were based on Region.
- 34:50TFX, Syndicate, and Africa,
- 34:57Rebel Renegade Games.
- 34:59They were the only events
- 35:01that were based on Region.
- 35:11Understand.
- 35:11So if a contract is for
- 35:13twenty K and the athlete
- 35:14wins thirty K in an event,
- 35:16they only get ten K extra,
- 35:17not fifty K. Well.
- 35:23It's better put is if the
- 35:25contract is for twenty K
- 35:26and the athlete wins thirty K in an event,
- 35:29they get thirty K and.
- 35:32Anything they win beyond
- 35:34that they get as well.
- 35:36Because they have gone above
- 35:38their minimum.
- 35:41It's not extra.
- 35:42It's they won the thirty K.
- 35:45And then they they are past
- 35:46their minimum.
- 35:47So they will win everything
- 35:49in moving forward for that year.
- 35:58Andrew,
- 35:58it's it's been done in tennis for years.
- 36:03Athletes used to get an appearance fee,
- 36:06so they were guaranteed at
- 36:07least some money if they
- 36:08showed up to a tournament.
- 36:09And if they won above and beyond that,
- 36:12their prize money was the
- 36:13prize money and they didn't
- 36:15get the appearance fee
- 36:16because they exceeded it.
- 36:20It's just to guarantee that
- 36:21you have some money.
- 36:25It doesn't suck.
- 36:27You go into a season knowing
- 36:31you have money to pay for it.
- 36:36And you have the ability to
- 36:37make way more than that.
- 36:44They didn't sign a contract
- 36:46for twenty K. They signed a
- 36:48contract saying they could
- 36:49earn no less than twenty K
- 36:51for the season.
- 37:05Benita said if athletes
- 37:06thought that sucked and
- 37:07they shouldn't have signed up.
- 37:10I think CrossFit athletes
- 37:11who usually don't make any
- 37:12money from CrossFit are probably happy.
- 37:14have guaranteed income I
- 37:17agree completely benita ken
- 37:29walters the part that sucks
- 37:31for the winners as an
- 37:32athlete could finish last
- 37:33every event but still get
- 37:34the contract amount they
- 37:36can just coast but they're
- 37:37going to coast for the
- 37:38minimum they're just going
- 37:40to coast for the room and
- 37:41they're not going to get a
- 37:42pro card for the next year
- 37:45So then they won't have that
- 37:47option next year.
- 37:58Edging.
- 37:58Anyone who ever worked on a
- 37:59draw versus commission should understand.
- 38:08There are going to be
- 38:09athletes that take
- 38:09advantage of the guaranteed money.
- 38:12And if they're hurt or they're
- 38:16I love Bethany to death,
- 38:17but take Bethany for example.
- 38:19She knew she had a minimum
- 38:20and all she had to do was
- 38:21show up for that and she
- 38:23got a third of her minimum
- 38:26because she showed up for
- 38:27that event in Indianapolis.
- 38:41If Austin wins again,
- 38:42he gets that extra thirty K
- 38:44keeps pro card and he wins
- 38:46the championship.
- 38:47He wins that also on top of
- 38:49the minimum contract.
- 38:50Correct.
- 38:55And next year,
- 38:55the athletes who coast get
- 38:56zero dollars and Colton
- 38:58Onik and fee get a contract minimum.
- 39:01Correct.
- 39:11So there's definitely a
- 39:13penalty for coasting.
- 39:15It means you get nothing the
- 39:16following year.
- 39:23I actually love the concept
- 39:25because right now, like in CrossFit,
- 39:27you get no money for anything.
- 39:30You have to pay your way there.
- 39:31You have to pay your expenses to be there,
- 39:35so on and so forth.
- 39:37It's just an effort to be
- 39:38somewhat different in
- 39:40giving athletes an
- 39:41opportunity and what can
- 39:43they do with it if you take
- 39:44a little bit of that
- 39:45pressure off of the athlete
- 39:47and see what happens.
- 39:50And we need to let it play
- 39:51out to see what that is.
- 40:03Halbin says the first year
- 40:04is wonky because they hand-selected them.
- 40:07Every year forward, it's merit-based.
- 40:10And every year forward,
- 40:11it's even more merit-based.
- 40:13The further down the road they get,
- 40:15the more legit those top-twenty are.
- 40:23And Doug wants to know where
- 40:25the money comes from.
- 40:26It can't be based off attendance.
- 40:28Is it really sustainable?
- 40:31The way I look at that is
- 40:32it's just like with my Chicago Bears.
- 40:36I want them to sign all the free agents.
- 40:38I want them to have the best
- 40:39players they can possibly get.
- 40:41Do I care where that money comes from?
- 40:43I do not.
- 40:45I just figure they own the
- 40:46team and they made a plan
- 40:50and a budget to be able to
- 40:51buy those players.
- 40:55I'm assuming the same thing with the WFP.
- 40:57They know what they're getting into.
- 40:59They had to put together a budget.
- 41:01They have money coming from somewhere,
- 41:03and it's not my
- 41:05responsibility to make sure
- 41:06it's sustainable.
- 41:07It's theirs.
- 41:16I don't need to know how the
- 41:17hot dog's made.
- 41:18I just want a good hot dog.
- 41:31And Jonathan could be right.
- 41:33Maybe it's cocaine and drugs, baby.
- 41:41Corey is telling me that
- 41:42every NFL team has commercial revenue,
- 41:44TV revenue.
- 41:46Right.
- 41:46But I don't care.
- 41:48I don't keep a ledger of that stuff.
- 41:52I don't care.
- 42:02And Doug wants to know if
- 42:03the hot dog is lips and butts.
- 42:05I get it.
- 42:10But their sustainability has
- 42:11nothing to do with me.
- 42:14I just, I enjoyed,
- 42:16I will tell you that I
- 42:17enjoyed the WFP broadcast
- 42:19and the athletes
- 42:20participating in that event
- 42:22more than eighty percent of
- 42:24the online syndicate or
- 42:26online qualify or in-person
- 42:29qualifying events.
- 42:33other than mayhem and
- 42:34syndicate it was hard to
- 42:36have a good field with a
- 42:37good stream to watch
- 42:39something as good as wfp
- 42:47chicago pro sports team
- 42:48money still coming from the
- 42:49capone crime syndicate I
- 42:52would not be surprised
- 43:04And Jeff says that there are
- 43:05even beaks and butts in hot dogs.
- 43:12So anyway,
- 43:13I'm trying to just explain the
- 43:15contract aspect of WFP
- 43:18because everybody's like, it's not fair,
- 43:20it's not fair.
- 43:21It is way fair.
- 43:22They are guaranteeing a minimum.
- 43:24You can earn above that
- 43:25minimum through the year if
- 43:27you have a good season.
- 43:29And if you're coasting to
- 43:30just collect the minimum, you're gone.
- 43:36But with that, guys,
- 43:38my lunch hour is just about over.
- 43:42Don't forget today at two p.m.,
- 43:44which is just one hour from now,
- 43:46we are going to have Reese
- 43:47Littlewood on the show.
- 43:50I am interviewing her after
- 43:52her great two-win
- 43:53performance at the Syndicate Crown.
- 43:57So that'll hold you over
- 43:58until the broadcast gets
- 44:00their recordings back to the
- 44:02room and uploaded and then
- 44:04you can jump right after
- 44:05Reese Littlewood you can
- 44:06jump into NorCal Classic
- 44:09coverage after they get it
- 44:11uploaded Hoppin they've
- 44:17done one single event with
- 44:18less than two hundred fifty
- 44:19athletes everyone is
- 44:20comparing them to an
- 44:21eighteen plus year
- 44:22competition that is the
- 44:24pinnacle of the sport it's
- 44:25Waza with three events
- 44:27versus two and I'm going to
- 44:31leave you on this
- 44:33More importantly,
- 44:34how does the community get back together?
- 44:37There is a clear divide and there is,
- 44:40and I want nothing more
- 44:41than the community to come back together
- 44:43Because I love this community.
- 44:45I love this sport.
- 44:47I love this methodology.
- 44:49It saved my life.
- 44:51And that's why I'm here
- 44:53every day at lunch to hang
- 44:54out with you guys on Lunch
- 44:56with Clydesdale.
- 44:57Now, you knuckleheads,
- 44:59it's time to get back to work.
- 45:00We'll see you in an hour
- 45:03with Reese Littlewood.
- 45:05Bye, guys.
