- 0:25Speaker 2: He's a steady player. He makes good decisions. He runs
- 0:28Speaker 2: when he has to. the game's not too big for
- 0:32Speaker 2: him ever. And, you know, we appreciate the heck out
- 0:35Speaker 2: of the way he hangs in there and takes shots
- 0:37Speaker 2: in the pocket at times when he has to and
- 0:39Speaker 2: delivers and doesn't flinch one bit. And so that was
- 0:42Speaker 2: a big-time performance by him.
- 0:44Speaker 1: Kellen Moore lauding his quarterback after the Saints win in
- 0:46Speaker 1: Baltimore 24-17. I was scrolling TwitterX last night. I saw
- 0:52Speaker 1: Adam Archuleta, who was on the call. He quote-tweeted a
- 0:55Speaker 1: video of Chuck's performance and said, beyond impressed with Chuck,
- 0:59Speaker 1: I've seen and talked to a lot of young quarterbacks,
- 1:01Speaker 1: and he has the stuff. Fantastic demeanor and doesn't flinch.
- 1:06Speaker 1: Very excited to welcome Adam Archuleta, who's on the call
- 1:09Speaker 1: for CBS a day ago, onto the show. Adam, thank
- 1:11Speaker 1: you so much, man, especially through short notice. You said
- 1:14Speaker 1: you had a miserable travel day. We can all empathize,
- 1:17Speaker 1: but thank you for the time, man.
- 1:18Speaker 3: How are you?
- 1:20Speaker 4: I'm doing well.
- 1:22Speaker 5: Yes, I had a tough one. This is one of
- 1:23Speaker 5: the tougher travel 24 hours I've had, but I refuse
- 1:28Speaker 5: to play the role of a victim, man.
- 1:29Speaker 4: I'm happy to be here.
- 1:30Speaker 2: Amen, man.
- 1:31Speaker 1: Dude, we get to talk about sports for a living.
- 1:33Speaker 1: It's like we're not building the railroad.
- 1:35Speaker 3: It's awesome. Good on you, man. Thank you for the time.
- 1:37Speaker 1: Okay, can I just start by just asking you to
- 1:40Speaker 1: elaborate on those 20 words or so that you put
- 1:42Speaker 1: on Twitter about Tyler Shuck and what you like so
- 1:45Speaker 1: much about him?
- 1:48Speaker 4: Yeah, well... I didn't know what to expect.
- 1:51Speaker 5: You know, I've, I've talked to you name it, the
- 1:53Speaker 5: spectrum of quarterbacks over the last 10 years from the
- 1:56Speaker 5: very best to, you know, not some for very forgettable performances.
- 2:04Speaker 4: I didn't see a.
- 2:04Speaker 5: Lot of him last year and not, not in a,
- 2:07Speaker 5: in a study sense, but when I, I saw in
- 2:10Speaker 5: the Detroit game in week one, what really jumped out
- 2:13Speaker 5: to me was just how nothing seemed to phase him.
- 2:18Speaker 5: And Detroit really brought the house and gave him a
- 2:21Speaker 5: lot of different looks. And he was always ready for it,
- 2:24Speaker 5: always prepared. And as the game went along, as it
- 2:27Speaker 5: got tighter and tighter, he played better and better. And,
- 2:30Speaker 5: you know, that fourth and 12, I'm sure you guys
- 2:32Speaker 5: have all talked about it, was just, you know, something
- 2:34Speaker 5: that you just don't see a lot. And so when
- 2:37Speaker 5: I had a chance to talk to him in person
- 2:39Speaker 5: in meetings, man, he just didn't seem like a guy
- 2:43Speaker 5: in his 11th start. And just the way his approach,
- 2:47Speaker 5: the way he spoke, the way he talked about the game,
- 2:49Speaker 5: the way he answered questions, you start to say, man,
- 2:52Speaker 5: this guy really, you know, and it's not for show,
- 2:55Speaker 5: you know, it wasn't like he's putting on a performance.
- 2:57Speaker 5: He's who he is, really came away from that meeting
- 3:01Speaker 5: impressed by his demeanor. I knew that he was going
- 3:04Speaker 5: to see a different style of defense this week. So
- 3:07Speaker 5: it would be another test again on the road, another
- 3:10Speaker 5: potential tough environment and potentially going blow for blow with
- 3:14Speaker 5: Lamar Jackson and And as you saw that game, man,
- 3:17Speaker 5: it was just kind of the same thing. He never
- 3:20Speaker 5: got a chance to really comfortable in the pocket. He
- 3:23Speaker 5: was always bobbing and weaving and, you know, some sort
- 3:26Speaker 5: of a pressure, the way he was able to find completions.
- 3:30Speaker 5: And just when he had to make those big throws
- 3:33Speaker 5: and see the defense and those big third downs and
- 3:36Speaker 5: get it out, again.
- 3:37Speaker 4: He was almost perfect. So I don't know what else
- 3:40Speaker 4: you can ask for.
- 3:41Speaker 5: I know there's going to be some valleys.
- 3:43Speaker 4: There's going to be some peaks.
- 3:45Speaker 5: But in just a small sample size of games, I
- 3:48Speaker 5: really do believe that he's got the stuff to be
- 3:51Speaker 5: your quarterback.
- 3:52Speaker 1: That's a guy who played with a Hall of Famer
- 3:54Speaker 1: in Kurt Warner. I want to ask you some maybe
- 3:56Speaker 1: comps here in a second, but let me follow up
- 3:58Speaker 1: on one thing for the game specifically. I'm so glad
- 3:59Speaker 1: you said you watched game film and studied the Detroit game.
- 4:02Speaker 1: The thing we spent most of last week talking about, Adam,
- 4:04Speaker 1: were the turnovers. The comeback was incredible, but the turnovers
- 4:08Speaker 1: were something they needed to fix. Willie goes and plays
- 4:10Speaker 1: in Baltimore and they don't turn the ball over. What
- 4:12Speaker 1: was different?
- 4:15Speaker 5: Well, If you study the turnovers, one of them was
- 4:19Speaker 5: on a miscommunication on a pressure. And it looked like
- 4:21Speaker 5: he kind of threw it. Either he was too fast
- 4:24Speaker 5: or the receiver was too slow. I think it was
- 4:26Speaker 5: a tight end.
- 4:28Speaker 4: Or it was the young guy. I can't remember who
- 4:31Speaker 4: it was.
- 4:31Speaker 5: But anyways, it was just a matter of, hey, I
- 4:34Speaker 5: saw it. I went to the right guy. And the
- 4:37Speaker 5: receiver should have hooked it instead of running it out.
- 4:41Speaker 5: And he throws the ball to the defender. gets interception.
- 4:44Speaker 5: The other interception in that game, I actually thought it
- 4:46Speaker 5: was just a hell of a play by the linebacker.
- 4:48Speaker 5: I mean, textbook linebacker play, just reading the eyes of
- 4:51Speaker 5: the quarterback. And as he came back to his backside,
- 4:54Speaker 5: you know, jumped the route. And when you talk to
- 4:57Speaker 5: him in that, about that game, when you talk to
- 4:59Speaker 5: Kellen and you talk to, you know, coach Nussmeyer, you know,
- 5:02Speaker 5: they all felt like things were moving a little fast
- 5:05Speaker 5: and they were a little sped up and everybody was
- 5:07Speaker 5: a little bit too antsy.
- 5:08Speaker 4: Early in that game.
- 5:09Speaker 5: And then as they calmed down, And I think as
- 5:12Speaker 5: they started taking a few shots and connecting on those shots,
- 5:16Speaker 5: you started to feel a confidence start to grow. And
- 5:19Speaker 5: then they settled into their offense and played well. So
- 5:22Speaker 5: turnovers are going to come. The thing that I really,
- 5:25Speaker 5: that stood out last week, and I haven't studied the
- 5:27Speaker 5: all 22 yet. I mean, the Baltimore game is there
- 5:31Speaker 5: were a few times where he went to throw it
- 5:34Speaker 5: and he pulled it down because he saw something. And
- 5:38Speaker 5: rather than, I mean, just quick thinking like, Hey, It's
- 5:41Speaker 5: not there. I mean, I'm about to make a really
- 5:43Speaker 5: bad throw. He pulled it down and maybe scrambled or
- 5:45Speaker 5: went somewhere else. But I thought that showed a lot
- 5:49Speaker 5: of maturity in those moments of don't just throw it,
- 5:53Speaker 5: but he saw something and then tried to make something
- 5:56Speaker 5: happen after it. So I just think he's processing the
- 5:59Speaker 5: game at a very high level for being so new
- 6:01Speaker 5: at the pro game.
- 6:03Speaker 1: Adam Archuleta is with us. One more on Chuck, then
- 6:05Speaker 1: we'll talk defense. We did mention you played with a
- 6:08Speaker 1: Hall of Famer in Kurt Warner in St.
- 6:10Speaker 4: Louis.
- 6:11Speaker 1: And you played against Hall of Famers. I'm not suggesting
- 6:15Speaker 1: that after 11 starts that Tyler Shuck is on that path,
- 6:18Speaker 1: but I'm just asking, what traits do the great quarterbacks
- 6:22Speaker 1: have that maybe you see scratching the surface some of
- 6:26Speaker 1: that with Tyler Shuck? Because the physical ability, you've got
- 6:28Speaker 1: to be able to make all the throws, and we
- 6:29Speaker 1: all know that, but there's the other stuff there.
- 6:33Speaker 5: Well, I'm going to refrain from calling Tyler chuck a
- 6:37Speaker 5: future hall of famer right so right right um you
- 6:40Speaker 5: know i don't know i you know i just i
- 6:42Speaker 5: think it'd be irresponsible of me to say that but
- 6:45Speaker 5: if you ask what i think and there's a lot
- 6:47Speaker 5: of qualities.
- 6:50Speaker 4: You mentioned kurt.
- 6:53Speaker 5: I think one of the one of the great qualities
- 6:55Speaker 5: are guys that that don't they don't flinch and they're
- 6:58Speaker 5: not rattled by mistakes and they continue to be aggressive
- 7:03Speaker 5: obviously they're very good at all the other things But
- 7:06Speaker 5: just having the mentality of it doesn't matter what just happened. Like,
- 7:12Speaker 5: I'm coming right back. And I may throw another pick.
- 7:16Speaker 5: But I'm just going to keep coming. I'm going to
- 7:18Speaker 5: keep attacking. And I'm never going to go into a
- 7:21Speaker 5: shell if things aren't going right. One of the things
- 7:25Speaker 5: I think about when the greatest example to me would
- 7:28Speaker 5: be Brady against Atlanta in the.
- 7:30Speaker 4: Super Bowl, where he didn't play well. They didn't play
- 7:34Speaker 4: well for three quarters. And it didn't matter. He just
- 7:37Speaker 4: kept coming and coming and coming. It could have been
- 7:39Speaker 4: very easy to say, this isn't our day.
- 7:42Speaker 5: But just that quality to no matter what's happening on
- 7:44Speaker 5: that field, no matter what just got me, no matter
- 7:47Speaker 5: what mistakes I've made, hey, you better be on your
- 7:50Speaker 5: A game. Because if you make a mistake, I'm going
- 7:53Speaker 5: to make you pay on the defensive side of the ball.
- 7:55Speaker 5: So I think that's a really, it's more of a
- 7:58Speaker 5: mental quality than a physical quality.
- 8:00Speaker 4: But that's what the common denominator of all the great
- 8:03Speaker 4: ones have. Love it.
- 8:04Speaker 1: Adam, by the way, to an audience of Saints fans,
- 8:07Speaker 1: it is never a bad time to mention the 28-3
- 8:09Speaker 1: comeback against the Falcons.
- 8:11Speaker 3: We're always happy to celebrate 28-3. Yeah. Okay.
- 8:15Speaker 1: Adam Archuleta is with us for a couple more minutes.
- 8:17Speaker 1: He was on the call yesterday for CBS. You'll follow
- 8:19Speaker 1: him on Twitter at Adam Archuleta. You also mentioned that
- 8:22Speaker 1: you thought Brandon Staley called a great game. It's so
- 8:25Speaker 1: interesting to me because I look at the Saints defense
- 8:26Speaker 1: and there just aren't I mean, there aren't all pros
- 8:30Speaker 1: on that side of the ball. Cam Jordan will be
- 8:33Speaker 1: a Hall of Famer one day, and Chase Young is
- 8:35Speaker 1: an outstanding player, but I think you understand what I mean.
- 8:37Speaker 1: Why did it work so well against Lamar Jackson and
- 8:40Speaker 1: Derrick Henry in that offense?
- 8:42Speaker 4: Well, listen, it's a challenge.
- 8:44Speaker 5: And listen, it was fortunate that they didn't have to play,
- 8:48Speaker 5: you know, Zay Flowers didn't play, because that's one more
- 8:52Speaker 5: piece that you have to worry about one-on-one.
- 8:54Speaker 4: And when they have those three players... all healthy. That
- 8:59Speaker 4: changes the game.
- 9:00Speaker 5: But I strongly lean towards, and I don't want to
- 9:05Speaker 5: say conservative because it's not that, but I just think
- 9:09Speaker 5: sometimes coordinators outsmart themselves and they try to do too
- 9:12Speaker 5: much and they think that they have to be really
- 9:14Speaker 5: exotic and they have to confuse and throw all these
- 9:17Speaker 5: different things.
- 9:18Speaker 4: And a lot of times.
- 9:19Speaker 5: Your players just play confused and they don't play fast.
- 9:23Speaker 5: And I don't think you should just line up and
- 9:25Speaker 5: be vanilla by any stretch, but I just thought it
- 9:28Speaker 5: was just a really smart, disciplined game plan. It was
- 9:30Speaker 5: similar to what they did against the Lions. But he
- 9:35Speaker 5: avoided a lot of his players needing to make one-on-one plays.
- 9:40Speaker 5: And really, it was against Derek and Lamar in that game.
- 9:43Speaker 5: And so there are always eyes. There are always people
- 9:46Speaker 5: converging on the tackle, knowing that they're going to get
- 9:48Speaker 5: their plays.
- 9:49Speaker 4: It's going to happen. And they did get a couple
- 9:52Speaker 4: explosive plays.
- 9:53Speaker 5: But for the most part, their players were in position
- 9:56Speaker 5: to make plays And a lot of times it was
- 9:58Speaker 5: more than just one player. And then I think the
- 10:01Speaker 5: other thing that he did really well is he really
- 10:03Speaker 5: got a feel, especially as the game went on of
- 10:06Speaker 5: what and when the Ravens were, were doing certain things.
- 10:09Speaker 5: So he got a little bit more aggressive with his pressures,
- 10:12Speaker 5: but they were strategic and really hit the right pressures
- 10:16Speaker 5: against their run and their play action pass and They
- 10:19Speaker 5: really threw the Ravens off guard a little bit. So
- 10:21Speaker 5: I just think it was a smart, disciplined, patient game plan.
- 10:24Speaker 5: And for three quarters, that's the game that Lamar played,
- 10:28Speaker 5: and they were having success. But he just gave his
- 10:31Speaker 5: players an opportunity to not be exposed. And then as
- 10:36Speaker 5: the game went on, you saw those individual plays being
- 10:39Speaker 5: made one-on-one, those one-on-one matchups.
- 10:42Speaker 4: Ravens had the same thing on defense. They didn't make
- 10:45Speaker 4: those one-on-one plays.
- 10:46Speaker 5: And the Saints, they didn't end up making those plays,
- 10:50Speaker 5: and that was the difference in the game.
- 10:52Speaker 1: One more for you, Adam. I very much appreciate your time.
- 10:54Speaker 1: Thank you for doing this, especially on short notice. Listen,
- 10:59Speaker 1: trying to draw wild-ranging conclusions after one week in the
- 11:03Speaker 1: NFL or two weeks is a fool's errand, as we
- 11:05Speaker 1: just saw with the Bears scoring 59 points and then three.
- 11:09Speaker 3: It's the NFL. It's such a weak tweet. It is.
- 11:12Speaker 1: From the perspective of the people here who have watched
- 11:14Speaker 1: this team miss the playoffs for the last five years,
- 11:17Speaker 1: what most would like to see is just this team
- 11:20Speaker 1: elevate itself from the gum on the bottom of the
- 11:23Speaker 1: shoe of the collective NFL. Not saying that they're a contender,
- 11:26Speaker 1: but are they good enough to be a team that
- 11:28Speaker 1: can go win nine games and win a bad division
- 11:30Speaker 1: and show that they've moved themselves out of the basement
- 11:33Speaker 1: of the NFL? Small sample, but do you think this
- 11:36Speaker 1: team is capable of that this year?
- 11:40Speaker 3: Oh, I do.
- 11:40Speaker 5: I mean, that's a that's kind of a low bar
- 11:44Speaker 5: to just not be gum on the bottom.
- 11:47Speaker 3: I don't know if you.
- 11:47Speaker 1: Paid a lot of attention to the last half decade here,
- 11:50Speaker 1: but it ain't been great since Drew Brees retired.
- 11:52Speaker 4: Jeez. Is it that bad? Holy smokes.
- 11:54Speaker 1: I mean, they missed the playoffs five straight years after
- 11:57Speaker 1: a decade and a half of being, of expecting to
- 11:59Speaker 1: be a contender with Peyton and Drew Brees.
- 12:01Speaker 4: You guys were, yeah, you were spoiled though. Yes. Hey man,
- 12:06Speaker 4: that's life. I, you know what? I it's, it's week two.
- 12:13Speaker 5: Um, but I like this team and, uh, and, and
- 12:16Speaker 5: one of the reasons, again, I think that there will
- 12:19Speaker 5: be valleys, right. But I, I like your quarterback. And
- 12:23Speaker 5: if you have that guy, it doesn't mean that you're
- 12:26Speaker 5: guaranteed anything, but at least you're not playing that game
- 12:30Speaker 5: every week. Like, how are we going to win by,
- 12:34Speaker 5: you know, getting in spite of our quarterback play, you know,
- 12:37Speaker 5: you're not that team. And I do think that Tyler
- 12:39Speaker 5: is the kind of guy to keep getting better and better.
- 12:42Speaker 5: So I like those pieces. I think you, I mean,
- 12:45Speaker 5: we saw you have some really good one-on-one matchup pieces
- 12:48Speaker 5: with the Lave and maybe you're going to get your
- 12:51Speaker 5: receiver back, you know, pretty soon at some point you
- 12:53Speaker 5: would think, and how good was Jawan Johnson, you know,
- 12:57Speaker 5: in the first two weeks of the season? I mean,
- 12:58Speaker 5: that guy was, I mean, the extra effort plays, I mean,
- 13:02Speaker 5: almost could have single handedly won that game for you
- 13:04Speaker 5: guys last week. So And I think on defense, you guys,
- 13:08Speaker 5: you know, maybe won't be a top five elite defense,
- 13:12Speaker 5: you know, as far as, you know, it's possible. But
- 13:17Speaker 5: if you could play solid and you can create takeaways,
- 13:20Speaker 5: then I think they have the makings of a team
- 13:22Speaker 5: that could be pretty good this year.
- 13:23Speaker 4: How good? Who knows?
- 13:25Speaker 5: But I think it's safe to say I would elevate them.
- 13:28Speaker 5: I would elevate them off gum off the shoe status.
- 13:32Speaker 4: Yes.
- 13:34Speaker 1: Hey, man, I don't know if you've watched the rest
- 13:35Speaker 1: of the NFC South yet, but it's a low bar
- 13:37Speaker 1: in the South this year.
- 13:38Speaker 3: So I think that's most people. It's brutal.
- 13:41Speaker 4: But I think Carolina's they got a little better, didn't they?
- 13:45Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 13:46Speaker 5: But anything can happen, man. It's a crazy league. But
- 13:50Speaker 5: I mean, you guys are so close to being 2-0.
- 13:54Speaker 5: I would feel pretty good about yourselves right now in
- 13:57Speaker 5: the NFC South.
- 13:58Speaker 1: Adam Archuleta, CBS Sports. I was on the call for Saints.
- 14:01Speaker 1: They're upset winning Baltimore. Hey, man, I can't thank you
- 14:04Speaker 1: enough for taking some time, especially after a crazy travel day, man.
- 14:06Speaker 3: Thank you for jumping aboard. Hopefully we can do this
- 14:08Speaker 3: again soon.
- 14:10Speaker 4: Yeah, no problem.
- 14:10Speaker 5: Anytime.
- 14:11Speaker 2: Thanks.
- 14:11Speaker 1: It's our pleasure. Good stuff there, man. I'm very grateful
- 14:15Speaker 1: to Adam and glad that worked out. Please go follow
- 14:18Speaker 1: him on Twitter, X, whatever, if you don't already. If
- 14:22Speaker 1: for nothing else, just as a thank you. First of all,
- 14:24Speaker 1: he's a great follow. I'm looking at his tweets. Great context.
- 14:27Speaker 1: Got to great NFL safety. But give him a follow
- 14:32Speaker 1: just to say thank you for doing that. I mean,
- 14:33Speaker 1: he literally replied. I tweeted him. I DM'd him yesterday.
- 14:38Speaker 1: And then he replied at like 4.50. He was like,
- 14:41Speaker 1: I had an awful travel day. Sorry, I'm just getting back,
- 14:43Speaker 1: but I could do it if you want. I was like, hey, man,
- 14:47Speaker 1: totally understand. Don't worry about it. We'll do it another time.
- 14:49Speaker 3: He's like, no, I'm good.
- 14:50Speaker 2: I'm home. Awesome.
- 14:51Speaker 1: So please go follow me. He's at Adam Archuleta.
- 14:55Speaker 3: Go give him a follow. Easy enough.
- 14:56Speaker 1: At Adam Archuleta on Twitter. Go give him a follow
- 14:58Speaker 1: and just say thank you for jumping aboard. Sincerely appreciate
- 15:00Speaker 1: his time for doing that.
