- 0:00Tempo is a brand new investing app available in New Zealand and we're so excited to be telling you about how it works and how you can use it.
- 0:09So in 2023, Tempo conducted a survey with a thousand Kiwis and they found that 27% didn't know where to start when it comes to investing.
- 0:19And that's a lot of people.
- 0:21So the great thing about Tempo is that their goal is to take the guesswork out of investing.
- 0:26So when you sign up, they ask questions like how do you feel about the idea of your investment that's going up and down?
- 0:32Because some do more than others.
- 0:34You tell them how much you want to save and they recommend a mix of their funds for you.
- 0:38It's guided investing. So you're getting investment advice from the experts, which is very, very cool.
- 0:43And because they track your goal progress so they can see actually how you're going,
- 0:47they can also recommend that you change your investments and the mix of how you've invested over time, which is really great.
- 0:53So if you would like to try Tempo, you can get a $10 kickstart into your account.
- 0:57And if you would like to learn more about Tempo, you can head to the link in the podcast show notes.
- 1:02Rach, you're back again.
- 1:05I'm back.
- 1:06Oh, and we're so happy about it.
- 1:08I was just absolutely stoked to read how many comments of support.
- 1:13If people like this was an amazing lesson, she was so great.
- 1:17Did you read some of the comments?
- 1:19I did. And I'm not going to lie. I was very scared.
- 1:21Like, you know, putting yourself out there like this when, you know, a background is not in business but not in finance.
- 1:27It's like quite a scary thing to do. Like it was like a big leave.
- 1:30Applying, putting yourself out there and then obviously coming on.
- 1:33And so I was very scared that I'd like get trolled.
- 1:36Honestly, there's nothing scarier.
- 1:40But yeah, I'm like super overwhelmed by how nice everyone's been.
- 1:44And I guess that's, and lots of the comments of people I know.
- 1:47But there's also people I don't know.
- 1:49I was thinking that I was like, these are your family and friends.
- 1:52And my friends have been so cute.
- 1:54Like they, and my family, but my, my girlfriends especially have just been like, like it was funny.
- 1:58Some of them, because it all happened so fast last week, a couple of friends of like my closest friends, I didn't talk to for 24 hours.
- 2:04And then they're like, hey, Rachel, how's your day?
- 2:06And I'd be like, oh, you know, I took my daughter swimming in the morning and recorded the curve this afternoon.
- 2:11I'm like, sorry, what?
- 2:13I'm like, yeah.
- 2:14I also just love how many of your friends were like, do you need me to look after Zah?
- 2:19Yes, I'll come around and, you know, like really want to see you have the opportunity.
- 2:23You've got to do this. So yeah, shout out to all the girls. It was super awesome.
- 2:28But, you know, the curve community has been so kind and probably a bit gracious to, to be honest.
- 2:33But I think there's a real testament to what you guys do, right?
- 2:36Like it's a, it's a whole, the whole ethos of what you guys do is woman, uplifting women.
- 2:40So, I mean, you know, we all rise together.
- 2:43Yes, it's been really awesome.
- 2:45So thank you, everyone, for being kind.
- 2:46And please be kind to get this week.
- 2:48Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 2:49I really don't want to be kids, I'm a total trolled.
- 2:50We will block you, if you're mean.
- 2:53And how have you found the research piece?
- 2:57Because I mean, Vic naturally reads the news all the time.
- 3:00Like it's just kind of always been a part of who she is.
- 3:03Like she's always up to date with what's going on, not just the finance,
- 3:06but like news in general.
- 3:08She's happiest when she has her financial times in a coffee and hand, you know?
- 3:12So for someone who is in the middle of raising a four month old baby.
- 3:17Yeah.
- 3:18How was it for you?
- 3:19You know, managing being the primary caregiver for my daughter and doing this on top
- 3:24has definitely been a big juggle.
- 3:26And the same is a big degree.
- 3:27I like to stop today with what's going on in the world and what the latest news is.
- 3:31But probably not some the depth of the financial news necessarily as much.
- 3:35And once I, you know, had a look at all the topics of the week,
- 3:38then what ones the audience would find interesting.
- 3:41And then made sure I knew what I was talking about so that, you know,
- 3:44I don't say anything that's like completely wrong.
- 3:46And let everyone astray.
- 3:48I actually took it quite a lot of time.
- 3:50I have had someone before, like comment,
- 3:53because I said something wrong.
- 3:54It was something to do with I mentioned Icelandance of Greenland.
- 3:58It was a classic mistake.
- 4:00And she was like, hey, just need you to be aware.
- 4:04A lot of people don't read any other news.
- 4:07So like be really careful that you know your shit.
- 4:10And I was like, they're enough.
- 4:11They're so fair enough.
- 4:13So being the new, being the noob that I am.
- 4:16And, you know, wanting to make sure I, you know,
- 4:19do a good standing job for that really,
- 4:21yeah, put a lot of effort in.
- 4:22And there has been a really serious struggle this week
- 4:25while looking after my daughter.
- 4:26So, you know, my husband's been amazing.
- 4:28And really kind of, he's got a busy full-time job,
- 4:31but really stepped up and done a lot.
- 4:33So shout out.
- 4:34What I think is also really important is, you know,
- 4:36woman in general under so much pressure.
- 4:38And decided to pressure it.
- 4:40But new bums are especially.
- 4:42You have just like all this pressure and expectation
- 4:45coming at them from all angles.
- 4:47You know, whether it be, you know, how they look,
- 4:49after just having a baby or how they're, you know,
- 4:51caring for their child.
- 4:52And so many people have been like, oh my goodness,
- 4:55how have you managed this with a woman they'll baby?
- 4:58And just want to really acknowledge that.
- 5:00It's been like a really massive, massive, massive struggle.
- 5:03One of the things you said is like, I don't want it to be this like,
- 5:06I don't want to feed into the toxic like bounce back culture.
- 5:09Oh, it's fine.
- 5:10I can do it all.
- 5:11I'm sweet. This is easy breezy.
- 5:12It's like, no, no, this has actually been really difficult.
- 5:14Yeah, exactly.
- 5:15Yeah, new mums are especially under so much pressure.
- 5:17I definitely do not want to be contributing to bounce back culture.
- 5:20And I am really inspired by mums that are up to go out
- 5:24and do lots of things.
- 5:25But I'm also inspired by mums that are literally just surviving,
- 5:28because sometimes it is absolutely survival.
- 5:30And rest assured, other than the podcast and like meeting
- 5:33the basic needs of my daughter, every other aspect of my life this week
- 5:36has been to use my favourite word, a shim-muzzle.
- 5:39So it's been like total chaos.
- 5:42And I'll probably get home and crash today.
- 5:44So I'm like incredibly grateful, but also can't wait for Vick to get back this week.
- 5:47Yeah.
- 5:48And I'll just like, cruise back to being a listener.
- 5:50Yeah.
- 5:51Or how cool though, yeah.
- 5:52So cool.
- 5:53That's so awesome.
- 5:54And so what have we found in the news this week?
- 5:56I mean, I think last week that the shim-muzzle of the stock market
- 5:59was quite obvious.
- 6:00Yeah.
- 6:01And we're actually going to be hosting a like a free workshop tomorrow.
- 6:05So Tuesday night, New Zealand time at 8 p.m.
- 6:08for anyone that wants to come.
- 6:10Vick and I, not you, Rage.
- 6:11Yeah, not me.
- 6:12But you're not getting them to love, because if you'll be crashing and sleeping
- 6:15over down at 8 p.m.
- 6:17But because there's such turbulence at the moment,
- 6:20they were like, this is such a good investing opportunity.
- 6:23They're anyone that's like not sure or hasn't actually invested in the last
- 6:27little while, like how to approach the market dip.
- 6:29Because while of course if we go into a beer market
- 6:33and it keeps going down and down and down, that's not ideal.
- 6:36In terms of the way that you can invest during that time,
- 6:39like I was speaking to someone at the bank yesterday,
- 6:43and they were talking about how excited they are,
- 6:45about how much they've put in their kiwi saver over the last week.
- 6:47Because it's been on sale.
- 6:49And I thought, yeah, we need to speak about this to everyone.
- 6:52So for anyone that wants to join and know it's last minute,
- 6:54and if you've only just heard about this, I'm really sorry.
- 6:56However, we'll put a link to that in the podcast show notes.
- 6:59If you just register, how has the market been?
- 7:01Yeah.
- 7:02In the last few days this week, like, is it as bad as last week?
- 7:05No.
- 7:06So first thing, let's, we're possible.
- 7:08Make this a, like, tariff, Trump-free.
- 7:10Love that.
- 7:11Last week, we really need to address it all, but this week,
- 7:13then we decide we're going to call them little teas.
- 7:15No, little tea chat.
- 7:16Baby teas.
- 7:17Baby tea.
- 7:18No baby tea chat.
- 7:19No big tea chat.
- 7:20We're possible.
- 7:21Yeah.
- 7:22So the one kind of negative piece of news that's come out
- 7:25is that the quarter is about to end.
- 7:27So end of March.
- 7:29So this is like the first quarter of the year, like Q1.
- 7:31Yes, exactly.
- 7:32And the magnificent, I think last week, I call it the magic seven,
- 7:35but you know, the magic magnificent sevens,
- 7:37all of those big stocks in the US, have had their worst quarter.
- 7:41So for those who don't know what the magic or magnificent
- 7:44or wonderful or a super sevener.
- 7:46Maleficent sevener.
- 7:47They are all the big, big tech companies.
- 7:50Yeah.
- 7:51So like, I was about to say, it will absolutely meter,
- 7:56all the big ones that you're kind of like their household names.
- 8:01They've been essentially carrying the stock market for years.
- 8:05Their growth has been wider stock market over the last few years,
- 8:08has just been doing phenomenally well.
- 8:10Yeah.
- 8:11And it's the first time ever really that those,
- 8:13that there's been such a weighted percentage of the stock market success
- 8:18on such a small number of companies.
- 8:20Exactly.
- 8:21So the fact that you're saying they've not been doing well
- 8:23means the whole market's not doing well.
- 8:25Exactly.
- 8:26So that's a big driver of that.
- 8:28This week has been a little bit more stable for them,
- 8:30and that's mostly because of the news that has come out
- 8:32from the Fed in the US.
- 8:34Which is how America does it start?
- 8:36I know.
- 8:37So that's their cultural bank.
- 8:39So like the Reserve Bank New Zealand.
- 8:40Yeah.
- 8:41And so they came out saying that they're going to keep interest rates
- 8:44at this current rate in the US.
- 8:47So interest rates are the price that you can borrow money.
- 8:51They're not, they're basically the Fed have come out and said
- 8:54it's not going to be going down.
- 8:57So the rates are going to stay as they are.
- 8:59Was that the announcement?
- 9:00Yeah. So the announcement was the staying as they are,
- 9:02but they have indicated that they're going to cut it two more times
- 9:05over the rest of the year.
- 9:06Oh.
- 9:07So it's not like great news now, but it's coming.
- 9:09Yeah.
- 9:10Yeah.
- 9:11So the Fed have said that things are looking a bit gloomier than we expected
- 9:14because of all the stuff going on.
- 9:16Which we won't mention.
- 9:17Which we won't mention.
- 9:18And so by indicating that they're going to cut the interest rates,
- 9:23that means that they are wanting to stimulate demand.
- 9:26And so we saw this a lot through the pandemic where a central bank says
- 9:30going to drop interest rates, then people feel more confident to borrow money
- 9:33because the cost of borrow money is less.
- 9:35Does it stimulate the economy, right?
- 9:37It stimulates growth.
- 9:38People are like, oh, well, I should do that because it's low.
- 9:41This is a deal.
- 9:42It's kind of like interest rates on sale.
- 9:44Exactly.
- 9:45And we've seen that in New Zealand as well.
- 9:47And so yeah, it's a way to stimulate growth.
- 9:49So it's pretty good news in the stock market.
- 9:51It's been pretty happy about it.
- 9:53Oh.
- 9:54So actually it wasn't too bad.
- 9:56Not all doom and gloom.
- 9:57Like when you look it over a quarter doom and gloom,
- 9:59but this week things have been like actually pretty good.
- 10:01Damn.
- 10:02So we actually probably should have invested more last week.
- 10:04So it's kind of bounce back.
- 10:05It's bounce back a little bit.
- 10:06Things haven't skyrocketed.
- 10:08So you probably get a little bit more time.
- 10:09Okay.
- 10:10But yeah, it's definitely things are kind of shifting around.
- 10:12Okay.
- 10:13The Asian and European markets have also continued to see uplift.
- 10:17And we spoke about this last week, didn't we?
- 10:19Yeah.
- 10:20We said Europe might have some, you know, uptake.
- 10:23There might be some stimulation happening there.
- 10:25Maybe can we think of a new word in stimulation?
- 10:27Yeah.
- 10:28It just feels like it feels really sexual.
- 10:30Like it's stimulated again.
- 10:32Oh, positively impacts.
- 10:34Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 10:35Affect.
- 10:36Yeah.
- 10:37It's not very positive.
- 10:38We're seeing lots of the lingo community interpreted in
- 10:41different ways.
- 10:42Don't you reckon?
- 10:43Like there's so many times that that has said things.
- 10:45I'm like, you know, the gyrations of the market.
- 10:47Why is this sound like we're having sex with the stop market?
- 10:51Like it's so weird.
- 10:53Okay.
- 10:54So it's being stimulated.
- 10:55And we'll leave that for now and come back to it.
- 10:57Yeah.
- 10:58So Asia and Europe are like looking quite good.
- 11:01Yeah.
- 11:02Everything's kind of like more but in the green.
- 11:04Yeah.
- 11:05So it's been a recently positive week.
- 11:06Tesla?
- 11:07Or a chat about them?
- 11:08Oh my god.
- 11:09Yes.
- 11:10What's happening?
- 11:11So at the beginning of the week, they had a bit of a rough start with
- 11:14a heaps of EV news coming out of China.
- 11:16Yes.
- 11:17Because something, what was it?
- 11:18I love it.
- 11:19I'm pretending I know.
- 11:20Yeah.
- 11:21So B-Y-D.
- 11:22Yes.
- 11:23No, I did see something about this.
- 11:24Yeah.
- 11:25So they announced that they are launching a battery that can charge as fast
- 11:29as a petrol engine can fill up.
- 11:32Oh.
- 11:33Are you joking?
- 11:34Yeah.
- 11:35Oh my god.
- 11:36For anyone that has never driven an EV before, you have to plan your life around
- 11:40charging that car because it is not quick.
- 11:42And often you go to a charging port and there's three people waiting.
- 11:45Or if you're going on a long journey, you have to stop and like the
- 11:49Bombay Hills for an hour to try like it's not ideal.
- 11:52So the fact that you can now charge in the same time it takes to fill up.
- 11:57You'll get like that is huge.
- 12:00Huge.
- 12:01As you say, one of the biggest barriers of people buying an electric vehicle is the
- 12:06time it takes to charge a car.
- 12:08So B-Y-D has done super well this week, obviously.
- 12:10That's genius.
- 12:11And also makes me wonder why the hell Tesla or Elon Musk or any of those like other
- 12:18massive competitors haven't come out with that.
- 12:21You know, like you would think that would be the number one focus.
- 12:24You would.
- 12:25For any EV company.
- 12:27And also, sorry, with this news does that mean that they will be supplying those
- 12:32to other EV builders or is it specific to an like patent technology for B-Y-D?
- 12:37My understanding that it's exclusive to B-Y-D.
- 12:40I mean, it would be clever, right?
- 12:42Yeah, yeah, because they're growing exponentially around the world.
- 12:45They're not yet in the US market because, you know, anti-kind of China sentiment.
- 12:49Because it's a Chinese company.
- 12:50Yeah, Chinese company yet.
- 12:51So they'll be looking to leverage this to get their cars into as many driveways as
- 12:56possible.
- 12:57Also, sorry, but how annoyed would Trump be at that news?
- 13:01I know he'd say we want to mention the T-word, but like the fact that he's like,
- 13:05I've ordered Tesla and everyone should buy a Tesla and everyone's like, go away.
- 13:09Yeah.
- 13:10And then China, who he, Loki, actually not even Loki, if I he hates and is trying to
- 13:16do everything he can to like fuck up their economy, have come out with this.
- 13:20He'll be like, he'll be like, sorry.
- 13:23So it's all pretty wild, but so that was the beginning of the week.
- 13:27And then the latest stages of the week, Tesla's actually kind of bounced back a bit.
- 13:32What?
- 13:33Because there's been some news out of the out of California.
- 13:36So they are heavily invested in like driverless cars.
- 13:40Oh, that's their like unique selling point, isn't it?
- 13:43Yeah, so they've received some kind of initial permits to start like
- 13:47trialling that with actual customers.
- 13:50So that's been really good for Tesla.
- 13:52Oh, sorry.
- 13:53Can you imagine?
- 13:54Yeah.
- 13:55I seriously, I'm, firstly, I'm a terrible driver.
- 13:59I'm not great either.
- 14:00Secondly, I don't really enjoy it.
- 14:02Honestly, I get so distracted so easily.
- 14:04It's a miracle that I haven't had more crashes to T-word.
- 14:08To think that driving could be not wasted time in terms of like you can do things
- 14:14in a car, you can be efficient.
- 14:16Yeah.
- 14:17Because I think that's the best part in London about public transport is that you're not
- 14:20in time.
- 14:21Yeah, you could meditate, read a book, write an article if you're a writer.
- 14:25I'm like really struggling to think of things.
- 14:27But as in you, if you're spending 45 minutes on a chuba on public transport,
- 14:32it's fine because you could actually do something.
- 14:34Whereas when you're driving, you have to concentrate to think that there's a time
- 14:39and then not so distant future where you can just hop in a car.
- 14:43And imagine, oh my god, do you think this will be bad for Uber?
- 14:47Like Uber drivers?
- 14:49Oh, you thought Uber drivers?
- 14:51Because I was going to say Uber is a business probably not because they'll jump on it.
- 14:54But yeah, if you're an Uber driver long term, like you might be out of a gig.
- 14:57That's scary.
- 14:58Yeah, you might be out of a gig.
- 14:59In the video had a big conference this week.
- 15:02Ooh.
- 15:03They announced a new chip.
- 15:04They has 40 times the performance of their current chip.
- 15:07Okay.
- 15:08So NVIDIA is a really strong.
- 15:11Well, probably the strongest company in the AI space right now.
- 15:15Magnificent Magic.
- 15:16Magic.
- 15:17Wonderful.
- 15:18Super seven.
- 15:19And they produce the like microchips, essentially, that they use within AI.
- 15:25You don't really need to know too much about that.
- 15:27But basically, if they've got a new chip, 40 times as strong,
- 15:31because there was, and if you missed it, there was a whole halava,
- 15:35maybe a month ago, with a competitor coming into the space.
- 15:39And it was all because they were saying, we've got faster, better chips.
- 15:43And here's NVIDIA being like, nah, if you, we've got really good ones.
- 15:47So that's quite interesting.
- 15:48Yeah.
- 15:49So that's good.
- 15:50I reckon a lot of people would have sold their stock.
- 15:52And actually in the investing club, we spoke about it quite a bit.
- 15:55And it was interesting to see the people who have owned it for years.
- 15:57And at the point in which DeepSeat came out with that news, they were like,
- 16:00okay, I'm not going to buy more.
- 16:02But I bought more.
- 16:03So maybe my stocks are doing well.
- 16:06Yeah, they should like check.
- 16:07Yeah, they're not, it's like it hasn't like skyrocketed off the news,
- 16:10because there's still so much going on in this space.
- 16:13But yeah, it's definitely good news for NVIDIA.
- 16:16And they also announced a whole bunch of new partnerships with like GM Auto.
- 16:20Oh yeah, shit.
- 16:21No, mine's not doing very well.
- 16:22It's down three percent from when I bought it.
- 16:24Yeah, because for the quarter, it's been tanking.
- 16:26Damn.
- 16:27Yeah.
- 16:28So it's kind of like stabilizing, but this wasn't like a magic bullet to say.
- 16:31Yeah.
- 16:32Everything.
- 16:33Silver bullet, magic bullet.
- 16:34Magic?
- 16:35Yeah, magic bullet.
- 16:36Oh, no, I think it.
- 16:37Yeah.
- 16:38It's so good.
- 16:41Yeah, so yeah, it wasn't this silver bullet to say everything's back on track.
- 16:46But yeah, heating in the right direction.
- 16:48And yeah, they've announced some called partnerships with GM Auto,
- 16:50Taco Bell with AI.
- 16:52So yeah, it'll be one to watch to see how it covers.
- 16:56God, I'm so into stock news.
- 16:58Yeah.
- 16:59Really?
- 17:00I'm obsessed.
- 17:01I'm obsessed.
- 17:02I'm a finance bro.
- 17:03You are.
- 17:04I'm a finance hoe.
- 17:05I'm a finance hoe.
- 17:06I am so.
- 17:07I'd love for this shit.
- 17:08I know.
- 17:09Like, I can't imagine.
- 17:10In fact, thank God we managed to find you, because I couldn't have taken two weeks off this
- 17:15news.
- 17:16It's just so interesting.
- 17:17It was good.
- 17:18And then the kind of final market update.
- 17:20So we were meant to talk about this last week, but you and I both love yapping clearly.
- 17:23I know.
- 17:24We're going to have to explode as an all time high and has been for the last week.
- 17:29Okay.
- 17:30So we spoke about this a while ago, because gold has been one of those things, because it does
- 17:34well in recession environments.
- 17:36It does.
- 17:37When things are uncertain, gold does well.
- 17:39Because people look, it's something kind of tangible.
- 17:41It's like hold on to it.
- 17:43Yeah.
- 17:44Yeah.
- 17:45Yeah.
- 17:46So yeah.
- 17:47So it's been at a record high for the last week, over 3000 USD per ounce for the first time
- 17:52ever.
- 17:53Wow.
- 17:54And it's kind of held around there.
- 17:55Yeah.
- 17:56Yeah.
- 17:57One to watch.
- 17:58And you can invest in it through ETFs.
- 17:59We've actually spoken about a couple of ETFs in the club.
- 18:00Yeah.
- 18:01So for anyone that wants to learn more about that or understand what the right gold investment
- 18:06is, we've got some really good stuff in the current investing club.
- 18:09Awesome.
- 18:10Gosh, there's so many fun things happening.
- 18:11So many fun things happening.
- 18:12Oh, love your research.
- 18:13Okay.
- 18:14What about Reddit?
- 18:15Because I feel like this was a company that went public not that long ago.
- 18:19A year ago, yeah.
- 18:21And they were one of the bigger companies that took the whole crowd sourcing type.
- 18:26Like anyone can invest in that.
- 18:29And I think it was a genius idea because they've got, I don't know how many millions of people
- 18:33that use that.
- 18:34I mean, I was looking the other day for something.
- 18:36I think.
- 18:37So random to be admitting.
- 18:39I think I have like, there's this thing called rejection sensitivity dysphoria.
- 18:45Okay.
- 18:47And it's actually like very adjacent to women who have ADHD.
- 18:52And I was looking, I was like wanting to understand it more.
- 18:56Because I was like, God, I'm really admitting a lot here.
- 18:59But I recently am single.
- 19:01And so I was like, okay, I'm going to have to really like get my head around the idea of dating again.
- 19:05Yeah.
- 19:06Because I just, anyway, I, um, I realize I feel like I find rejection just harder than most people.
- 19:14And so I found myself on this Reddit thread with hundreds of people sharing their ideas,
- 19:19their thoughts, their resources.
- 19:21And I just thought, God, this is so good.
- 19:24Particularly for like shameful or like not the dark sides of the internet.
- 19:29But stuff that you don't want to fix stuff.
- 19:31Yeah.
- 19:32And I just, I thought it was really cool.
- 19:34Anyway, pointers.
- 19:35Reddit is a like a user.
- 19:38If you know what I'm saying content.
- 19:40It's a room forum.
- 19:41All met me into one, right?
- 19:42Yeah.
- 19:43And so they gave their users the chance to invest when they went public.
- 19:46Yeah.
- 19:47So when they became a public company, they were like, who wants to buy shares?
- 19:49And it actually did quite well.
- 19:50Very well.
- 19:51Yeah.
- 19:52It had a really good IPO.
- 19:53And it's still up generally speaking from when an IPO'd.
- 19:56But it has robbed a lot.
- 19:58So in the last five days, it's been down 15%.
- 20:00Shit.
- 20:01Yeah.
- 20:02But it is a very volatile stock.
- 20:04So it's had since this IPO'd.
- 20:06It's had changes of more than 5%.
- 20:08I think 60 times.
- 20:09So that is something to keep in mind.
- 20:11But what the main drivers of this dropper is that it is currently very reliant on Google search
- 20:18leading to Reddit.
- 20:20So people search Google and then it comes up with a Reddit thread and then they dive into it.
- 20:25So that's almost like SEO, right?
- 20:27And they've seen a lot about AI does not rely on SEO.
- 20:30So like businesses that have spent a lot of time getting good SEOs doesn't really matter.
- 20:36But I don't totally understand why it's been so volatile, like so up and down.
- 20:41Do you think that it has anything to do with the fact that the interface is really old school
- 20:48that it sits on Google that it's like, I don't know, is it AI driven?
- 20:54So the main drivers of why kind of people have concerns about it moving forward
- 21:00that monetizing it.
- 21:02So advertising revenue.
- 21:04So how they integrate advertising.
- 21:06So do they rely a lot on sponsorship advertising?
- 21:09Yeah, most of the social media companies do.
- 21:12That's where they get the majority of the income is from advertising.
- 21:15And the other thing is around user growth and organic user growth.
- 21:20So they're getting lots of user growth by Google kind of sending users to them.
- 21:24But there is a risk around organic growth.
- 21:26When I say organically, I mean with like out relying on someone asked to bring them in
- 21:31to be able to go for them to grow long term.
- 21:33It's so weird though, because like in terms of their user base,
- 21:37it's probably one of the biggest in the world.
- 21:39Like it's so heavily used.
- 21:41The fact that, yeah, I don't know, I don't know how to explain it,
- 21:44but you know how when it comes to investing,
- 21:46it looks for what they think is going to happen in the future.
- 21:49Not the current state of affairs.
- 21:51Because the current state of affairs for Reddit is it's actually kind of on fire
- 21:56and doing well.
- 21:57But the fact that the stock has gone down is because what people think is going to happen
- 22:02in the future not now.
- 22:03And there's a lot of uncertainty.
- 22:05So they've just announced this week a partnership with Google,
- 22:08which is good because they're heavily reliant on their algorithm
- 22:11and making sure they seem terrific.
- 22:12So it kind of entrenches that.
- 22:14It also is more we even knew that they're getting from Google.
- 22:18So that's a tech in terms of moving forward,
- 22:21knowing what they're going to be getting in.
- 22:23And the partnership is all around Google getting access to Reddit's API.
- 22:27Now, when I was talking about API, I sort of feel like I know what this is.
- 22:31So do you guys have like zero for your business banking?
- 22:35So, and can you see your banking and money in your zero account?
- 22:40Yeah.
- 22:41And so, the API connection.
- 22:43Yeah.
- 22:45And sorry to any digi people for that explanation,
- 22:48but I think the simplest way is that it connects information.
- 22:52So Google wants to use, so Reddit, to your point,
- 22:55has a wealth of information.
- 22:57All of this amazing rich user generated content.
- 23:00Yes.
- 23:01And Google wants the access to that to pull in to educate the AI models.
- 23:07Oh.
- 23:08Yeah.
- 23:09So it's positive in terms of this will be kind of entrenched relationship.
- 23:13But then the concern is that Reddit's very embedded with Google
- 23:16is the power dynamic off.
- 23:18Yeah.
- 23:19So it's one of what copy buying actually what I kind of like about it is that
- 23:23they're using real life people's experiences to inform AI,
- 23:28which is awesome.
- 23:30Yeah.
- 23:31Also scary.
- 23:32Also scary.
- 23:33Because it's like what are people saying and are they trusted sources?
- 23:36Yeah.
- 23:37And that's always the watch with AI.
- 23:38Like not going to lie when I first got this gig,
- 23:40and to chat to you, be like, what are the top five news articles of the week?
- 23:44And it helped a little bit, but it lead me fully astray.
- 23:47Like there was all this old stuff that came through.
- 23:49So it was kind of like rendered a bit redundant.
- 23:51So yeah, with AI, you've always got to be really careful about the guard rails.
- 23:55Like making sure you do a kind of due diligence and things.
- 23:58Yeah.
- 23:59Yeah.
- 24:00Yeah.
- 24:01I must say when I recorded this stupid video the other day,
- 24:03which of me was like a literally a shopping basket on my head pretending to be the stop market.
- 24:07It was cute.
- 24:08And I was like, is there anything on that mister on social media?
- 24:10Yeah.
- 24:11But I literally put on the chat to you, but how much is the stop market down and March?
- 24:14Yeah.
- 24:15And it was like down seven percent.
- 24:16I'm like, that's probably wrong, but I'm putting it on my hat anyway.
- 24:18Yeah.
- 24:19But yeah, there is.
- 24:21Yeah.
- 24:22So there's obviously people that are concerned about the future of Reddit.
- 24:27And I mean, I feel like getting into bed with Google is not the worst thing in the world.
- 24:33Also, I reckon they're the underdogs for AI.
- 24:36I think that while they haven't come out with huge amounts of innovation yet,
- 24:40they must be working on so much behind the scenes.
- 24:43Exactly.
- 24:44So yeah.
- 24:45Reddit want to watch.
- 24:46Now, last week, I feel like I mentioned if one for me, the one briefly,
- 24:49and you were kind of like,
- 24:51I'm so excited to talk about this.
- 24:53And so this weekend doubled down.
- 24:54I love that.
- 24:55And I was like, so we talked about for real one.
- 24:56And you were like, what does that have to do with MV sting?
- 24:58And I was like, standby.
- 25:00It is.
- 25:01It has something to do with MV sting.
- 25:03Because I was like, why are we talking about sport when we're on an investing podcast?
- 25:07Yeah.
- 25:08Because the idea of investing in sport is so foreign to me.
- 25:11Yes.
- 25:12Even making money through sport.
- 25:14I kind of don't totally understand.
- 25:16So sport.
- 25:17So talk to me.
- 25:18Okay.
- 25:19If one gets me on board, I'm like, because you're also a Formula One fan, right?
- 25:22Being a vegan fan, yes.
- 25:23Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 25:24And then it's closed.
- 25:25Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 25:26Okay, so this is slightly a biased view.
- 25:28It's slightly a biased view.
- 25:29Exactly.
- 25:30So Formula One, Vroom Vroom, lots of cars,
- 25:33Metacars, zooming around a track.
- 25:35There's now 24 races in a year.
- 25:38Is that like Wimbledon for 10 years?
- 25:40There's 24 Wimbledon.
- 25:41Exactly.
- 25:42So each race is called Grand Prix, which is like a grand slam.
- 25:44Sounds fancy.
- 25:45Yeah.
- 25:46It does sound fun at Grand Prix.
- 25:47So sport and life sport in general has been exploding over the last few years.
- 25:52And Formula One has now become the number one most watch sport in the world.
- 25:56No way.
- 25:58And guess who and what is driving that growth?
- 26:01The Netflix show.
- 26:02Yes, but woman.
- 26:04So the F1 audience in 2018 was 8% woman.
- 26:09No.
- 26:10And in this year, it's 40% woman.
- 26:13So it's nearly, with nearly got half of the audience are women.
- 26:18Yes.
- 26:19And they estimate that last year, Formula One reached 750 million people.
- 26:24So it is absolutely huge.
- 26:28And yes, two point Netflix.
- 26:30So the main driver of the boom of why people love Formula One,
- 26:34start watching Formula One is a few years ago,
- 26:37they were like, we want to attract a new audience.
- 26:39How do we do that?
- 26:40Market and kind of 101.
- 26:41You meet a customer where they're at.
- 26:43So women are watching Netflix.
- 26:44We want to attract a new group of people.
- 26:46We'll put together the show.
- 26:48The show shows all the drama behind the scenes.
- 26:51It's kind of like below deck of sailing or like.
- 26:54Love below deck.
- 26:55Yes.
- 26:56Love reality shows.
- 26:57Yeah.
- 26:58Exactly.
- 26:59And it shows all the drama.
- 27:00Like one of the principals this season is involved in an alleged kind of sexual misconduct scandal,
- 27:06married to Jerry Hallowell from the spy skills.
- 27:09Like there's all these personalities drama.
- 27:11And so the way they've done the show.
- 27:12So like the real housewives of like Formula One.
- 27:15Pretty much.
- 27:16So it's, yeah, it's really amazing how they've kind of showcased all the behind the scenes.
- 27:20They explain Formula One and quite like lay terms of people understand it.
- 27:24So now anyone can kind of go and watch a race, go to a race and feel like they know what's going on.
- 27:30I need to watch the show.
- 27:31Do you think that's a good starting point to understand and get into it?
- 27:34I do.
- 27:35Yeah.
- 27:36I'm not going to lie to your age.
- 27:37I can't imagine myself being one of those guys that puts their head on.
- 27:40You know, it's got their like team on their hat and like goes and stands.
- 27:44Because what I imagine is going to like a dirt track with fencing like in the like movies
- 27:50and just watching these cars zoom around with dust everywhere.
- 27:53That's what I'm imagining.
- 27:54No, it's super glam.
- 27:56It's like a very ritty sport.
- 27:58I said the same thing.
- 27:59Look, I'm not going to buy a Ferrari hat.
- 28:01But I was, I could not have had less interest in cars.
- 28:05And like you'll be at Silverstone, the UK one next year.
- 28:10Do you?
- 28:11I guarantee.
- 28:13But what do you like about it?
- 28:15Like, I don't understand.
- 28:16Is it that you're excited to see who wins the race?
- 28:18Yes.
- 28:19It's very exciting.
- 28:20And there's lots of super competitive and there's lots of different dynamics going on.
- 28:24And when you know the show and you know what these drivers and these teams have on the line, it's super, super important.
- 28:29So do you think the fact that Netflix has done the back side of it so that you understand beyond just the sport?
- 28:36It's like the personalities and the families and the wealth and the people that are driving it is what makes it interesting.
- 28:41Exactly.
- 28:42You care more because you're like, so this season we've got a Kiwi driver, which is very exciting.
- 28:46Liam Lawson.
- 28:47He's from Pukakui.
- 28:48Wow.
- 28:49And he's got a lot on the line.
- 28:51He unfortunately had a bit of a rough start.
- 28:53So Formula One started last weekend in Melbourne.
- 28:55Had a bit of a rough start.
- 28:56So hopefully by the time this episode comes out, he's had a better weekend in China.
- 28:59And is the rough start like purely his racing, not his life?
- 29:02Yeah.
- 29:03He had a wall in London.
- 29:04And he's a bit of a diversity issue in Formula One.
- 29:07Is it like the sale GP?
- 29:09Yeah.
- 29:10So all the individual teams are kind of owned by a billionaire boys.
- 29:14It's a male sport.
- 29:15All the drivers are male.
- 29:17There was one team principal like team boss that was a woman that I know of.
- 29:21And unfortunately the team didn't do very well under her team yet.
- 29:23And so now it's kind of all men.
- 29:25And there's one female race engineer this year.
- 29:28And it's like the first one ever.
- 29:29So there's a way to go.
- 29:30But they are trying.
- 29:32So let's speak about the financials of Formula One.
- 29:35Yes.
- 29:36And how we can be investing or making money through it.
- 29:40Yeah.
- 29:41So all the teams are owned individually and you hear a lot about the teams.
- 29:44But there's an overarching company Formula One that oversees all of the races.
- 29:49All of the sponsorship.
- 29:51All of the ticketing.
- 29:52All of the broadcasting rights.
- 29:54And that is listed on the NASDAQ.
- 29:56And so it's.
- 29:57NASDAQ.
- 29:58The NASDAQ is more like the growthy techy stock.
- 30:01Yeah.
- 30:02So it's owned by a company called Liberty Media.
- 30:04Which owns Sirius FM.
- 30:06So called her daddy just did a big podcast vibes.
- 30:09Yeah.
- 30:10Call her daddy just did a massive deal with that I think.
- 30:12Yes.
- 30:13And they also own a massive chunk of live nation.
- 30:15So ticketing events.
- 30:17Okay.
- 30:18Yeah.
- 30:19So it all kind of makes sense.
- 30:20So it's not just Formula One.
- 30:21There's actually kind of.
- 30:22They have a whole bunch of different brands.
- 30:23And the Formula One business is kind of a media and entertainment company.
- 30:27So it's a sport.
- 30:28But it's a business.
- 30:29Oh my god.
- 30:30Fascinating.
- 30:31Yeah.
- 30:32So what's interesting about it as a stock is it's really asset light
- 30:35because they don't only need the teams.
- 30:37They run the events.
- 30:38Do the ticketing.
- 30:39Do the broadcasting.
- 30:40Do all the sponsorship.
- 30:41And yeah.
- 30:42So it's done really well as the sport has grown.
- 30:45And as they've made this decision.
- 30:46So like the average sponsorship now is worth more than the average sponsorship in Premier League.
- 30:51But how does this.
- 30:52Sorry.
- 30:53What.
- 30:54Like what are you trading on?
- 30:55Is it all of these media companies?
- 30:56That is essentially the.
- 30:57No.
- 30:58So there's.
- 30:59So it's split out.
- 31:00So the Formula One has its own ticker.
- 31:02I think it's if W O N K.
- 31:04So you're investing in that company Formula One.
- 31:07Okay.
- 31:08So you can invest specifically in Formula One.
- 31:10You don't have to just invest in all of those media companies.
- 31:12Yeah.
- 31:13Exactly.
- 31:14So you can invest just in Formula One.
- 31:15And if you're doing that,
- 31:16I guess you're betting that it's going to continue to grow in success.
- 31:19And the stock has had really good performance.
- 31:22So over the last year, it's up 27%.
- 31:26And over the last five years, it's up over 250%.
- 31:29So it's going to be as the sport has just exponentially growing.
- 31:32So would it be almost like if we started thinking about Formula One
- 31:36in a similar way to like the NBA,
- 31:38which is like one of the most lucrative sporting games in the world?
- 31:42Is it?
- 31:43Like I don't even know.
- 31:44It's the most fun sport.
- 31:45Yeah.
- 31:46In the age of China.
- 31:47Yeah.
- 31:48Yeah.
- 31:49So would it be almost like thinking about this is like the baby NBA?
- 31:51Like it's on its way up to be one of the biggest sporting.
- 31:55You were ship.
- 31:56Sponsorship.
- 31:57Spots in the world.
- 31:58Yeah.
- 31:59I mean, that would be my assumption.
- 32:01Like it's growing so much,
- 32:02but it still hasn't fully cracked the US.
- 32:04It's just kind of starting.
- 32:06There's lots of opportunities in the Middle East audiences.
- 32:08So it's growing.
- 32:09This is really cool.
- 32:10It's growing.
- 32:11But my personal view is,
- 32:12I think it's still got a long way to go.
- 32:14No, but it's definitely one that I would like to invest in.
- 32:17Yes.
- 32:18Yeah.
- 32:19Yeah.
- 32:20It's so fun.
- 32:21I've kind of reassured you that if one is a curved topic.
- 32:23I'm totally on board.
- 32:25I'm going to watch the Netflix show to start with.
- 32:28And I think if that hooks me in.
- 32:30Yeah.
- 32:31I'll probably be on board.
- 32:32The one thing I have a weird issue with,
- 32:34which I probably just need to get over.
- 32:36But with the whole elite sport.
- 32:39Yeah.
- 32:40You know, like in terms of the people that are competing.
- 32:45Yes.
- 32:46Being such a tiny, tiny, tiny, wealthy part of society.
- 32:49Similar to like sailing or other things.
- 32:51That's just, I mean, I don't, I just have a bear in my bonnet about it.
- 32:55Yeah.
- 32:56And that's completely justified.
- 32:57Like most of the drivers are from Monaco or, you know, Dynasties.
- 33:01There are a couple that aren't like Louis Hamilton.
- 33:04Probably the most well-known driver.
- 33:06He is the only other black man in Formula One.
- 33:11The only one.
- 33:12There are some diversity problems.
- 33:13Yeah.
- 33:14And he did a really interesting interview with David Letterman on Netflix show.
- 33:18And he comes from pretty humble beginnings.
- 33:20And he talks to that.
- 33:21The Kiwi driver also, he's spoken quite a lot about
- 33:24that his parents sold his, sold their house to support his career.
- 33:27So there are some kinds of stories.
- 33:29Oh, that's crazy.
- 33:30But fundamentally it is very elite billionaire boys vibe.
- 33:35Do you think that if there were more people with humble beginnings in stories
- 33:40that it wouldn't have that same grander or like, um, appeal from like,
- 33:45a Netflix example?
- 33:46Like, do you think the reason that it is doing so well and that will continue to do well
- 33:50if it stays in that kind of like where the Kardashians of the driving space?
- 33:55Yeah.
- 33:56I don't know.
- 33:57I think like now that more people watch it, more people probably more inclined to get into it.
- 34:01It's very expensive to get into.
- 34:03So that's, you know, there's barriers to intercost wise.
- 34:05And they are doing a lot to promote female drivers.
- 34:08I think they've got a formula series now for women.
- 34:12One of the cousins sponsored by Charlotte Tilbury, which is so fun.
- 34:15Oh, that is.
- 34:16Does it look like a lipstick or something?
- 34:18Yeah, actually it's pink.
- 34:19And there's some quite cool personalities coming through on the female side as well.
- 34:23So yeah, it does have a little bit of bad taste about being very elitist, very male dominated.
- 34:31But I think the bigger the sports grows, the more people will have access to it.
- 34:36Also the fact that you've said that it's gone from like whatever the percentage was
- 34:4040% of women watching.
- 34:41Yeah.
- 34:42And that that's been such a massive growth story for them, an audience perspective.
- 34:46Surely just means that the more women then start watching the more women drivers we will
- 34:50see, the more blah, blah, blah.
- 34:51Yeah.
- 34:52Like it's just, and that's why you're saying this is potentially a good opportunity to invest in us
- 34:56because it's, it's at the beginning of that.
- 34:59Like there's still a lot of ground to be made within the, I actually think it could be quite interesting
- 35:04to look at sport as investments in general across other sports.
- 35:09Because you know, we've seen like football soccer, grow heaps in Australia.
- 35:13There's been quite a bit of uptake where women are sending to wake up to the idea that if we start supporting sport
- 35:18and watching it, they get paid more and there's more equality and it's a big circular thing.
- 35:22But because we didn't know that, it'd be like a lot of us.
- 35:25Yeah.
- 35:26I don't know.
- 35:27I want to pay interest in female sport purely as an activist.
- 35:31Exactly.
- 35:32Exactly.
- 35:33But you're totally right.
- 35:34Yeah.
- 35:35The more that people watch it, the more it grows, the more they'll get paid.
- 35:38So let's do it.
- 35:39Let's just do one final mention of the recession situation in New Zealand,
- 35:46which is obviously New Zealand specific.
- 35:48So if you're not interested, you can, you know, you can end their episode now.
- 35:51But because there was some data that came out in the last few days.
- 35:54Yeah.
- 35:55Yesterday data came out that the New Zealand economy has grown by 0.7%.
- 35:59So not a huge amount.
- 36:01But we're going to say like context.
- 36:03Is that a lot?
- 36:04No.
- 36:05So it's not a huge amount.
- 36:06It's slightly more than economists were protecting.
- 36:08And we've been in a rut for a really long time.
- 36:11So it's kind of, you know, that term that all the politicians like to use green shoots.
- 36:15So it's like spring is coming.
- 36:17So it's like spring is coming.
- 36:18And like we're starting to see a little bit of growth.
- 36:20So it's kind of the first indicator.
- 36:21What's it called spring shoots?
- 36:23Green shoots.
- 36:24They always talk about like, this is the, we started to see green shoots happen in the economy.
- 36:29I've never heard that before.
- 36:32Green shoots was basically the idea that like a, we're sprouting.
- 36:35We're sprouting.
- 36:36A seed is sprouting.
- 36:37A seed is sprouting.
- 36:38Exactly.
- 36:39So we started to see the signs that things are, you know, starting to turn around.
- 36:42So that by no means means that overnight suddenly there isn't a horrific constantly in crisis.
- 36:47And people aren't absolutely struggling.
- 36:49But I think everyone's feeling like a little bit positive, a little bit buoyant.
- 36:53That things are kind of starting to head in the right direction.
- 36:56It's like very slowly.
- 36:58Yeah.
- 36:59That's really cool.
- 37:00So fingers crossed.
- 37:01So growth is a good thing, generally speaking.
- 37:03Spring is sprung.
- 37:04Spring is sprung.
- 37:05The sprouts are out.
- 37:06The sprouts are out.
- 37:07What if the sprouts don't up?
- 37:09Um, but yeah, so that's, so that's, so that's good news.
- 37:12So yeah, slightly higher than predicted.
- 37:14We've been in a recession for a while in a bit of a rut.
- 37:16So now, you know, you know, your own economy is starting to kind of pop its heat up and hope for the beast.
- 37:20It's been driven by a couple of industries.
- 37:22So dairy, fauntira's been doing really well.
- 37:26And interest rate in bantorism.
- 37:28So people coming to New Zealand, spending and hospitality.
- 37:31It's great.
- 37:32And has also been one of the areas that has grown the most.
- 37:35So yeah.
- 37:36It's in New Zealand.
- 37:37Yeah.
- 37:38Some see our beautiful country.
- 37:39Yeah.
- 37:40Right.
- 37:41Thank you so much for being on the podcast again for all of your amazing research.
- 37:45Honestly.
- 37:46So impressive.
- 37:48And just stoked.
- 37:49And like, I don't know.
- 37:52If the year it's felt like not proving a point, but to come from a place where you didn't know heaps about investing.
- 37:59You've obviously listened to the curve and you've done our course and you've learned a lot.
- 38:03Yeah.
- 38:04And now to be at a point where you can research everything happening in the economy and genuinely report it back to an audience of like.
- 38:12Thousands and thousands of people is pretty amazing.
- 38:15Oh, thank you.
- 38:16Yeah.
- 38:17It's been, I'm going to get a little emotional.
- 38:19I've seen it.
- 38:20It's like, I was part of hormones, but I'm very, my friends call me sent me to wait.
- 38:23So, but quite everything.
- 38:25No, it's been super awesome.
- 38:27Like I've absolutely loved, loved this experience.
- 38:31I'm very much looking forward to just going back to focusing on, you know, my main job.
- 38:36And hearing, you know, you know, you're in that kefir yarns, yarns moving forward.
- 38:40But yeah, it's been a very empowering experience in terms of, as you say, taking the knowledge and then turning it into communicating with your audience about.
- 38:48What's going on in the world?
- 38:50And I feel like a market is often a bit kind of underestimated.
- 38:55Sometimes we've seen as like the coloring in department or not necessarily like driving, you know, commercial outcomes.
- 39:02But, you know, I feel very strongly that, you know, we're responsible for driving business performance, understanding the psychology of customers,
- 39:09and also making things that are beautiful and easy to understand.
- 39:12And that's kind of what a lot of this has been.
- 39:15So, yeah, I feel very proud as a marketer and now I'm kind of fake finance scale.
- 39:21Yeah, I've just had the time of my life.
- 39:23Next time it's on holiday.
- 39:24I mean, at least we know we've got our gals.
- 39:26Yeah, yeah.
- 39:27Don't you worry. We'll wait till Zara's older.
- 39:29Yeah.
- 39:30That's going to take a holiday for at least a year.
- 39:32And if you want to meet any marketing yarns, you know, you can be called.
- 39:34Oh my god, good idea.
- 39:35Yeah.
- 39:36No, but I'm going to say this on behalf of all listeners.
- 39:39I'm sure everyone's learning heaps in the last two weeks.
- 39:42It's been really cool to hear a different perspective on things.
- 39:45And I think that's just credit to the way that Vic explains how unique our perspectives are in the world
- 39:52and how that's such a brilliant way to look at investment opportunities
- 39:57because your outlook is different.
- 39:59Yeah.
- 40:00And it's so different to Vic.
- 40:01And that in itself is like such a string.
- 40:03So the opportunities that you could spot based on the way that you think
- 40:06and how you see the world is like has just been demonstrated so obviously in the way that you've
- 40:11what you've seen as interesting news.
- 40:14But then also how you've relayed it or like your personal view on what you think.
- 40:17Like Formula One such a good example of that.
- 40:19Something that you just enjoy and like.
- 40:21Yeah.
- 40:22And also can see a financial opportunity from.
- 40:24And remember that's what Vic always says.
- 40:26If you are consuming something, you're enjoying something.
- 40:28See if you can invest in it.
- 40:30Yeah.
- 40:31God, I miss Vic.
- 40:32Yeah.
- 40:33I'm really miss her.
- 40:34Although I've never met her.
- 40:35But I feel like I know it from you guys.
- 40:36She's amazing.
- 40:37She's amazing.
- 40:38Let me know mom.
- 40:39It's off this morning.
- 40:40Yes.
- 40:41Yeah.
- 40:42We're recording.
- 40:43So lovely.

- 40:45Shout out to the lane.
