- 0:08In our last episode, we traced David Koresh's
- 0:12meteoric rise within the Branch Divideon sect.
- 0:15We covered his early theological claims, the
- 0:18power struggle with George Rodin, and his eventual
- 0:21establishment as the prophet of Mount Carmel.
- 0:25We began to see how he molded scripture to justify
- 0:28absolute authority, how he presented himself
- 0:31not merely as a teacher, but as the Lamb of Revelation
- 0:34itself. In today's episode, We go behind the
- 0:38walls of Mount Carmel from 1990 to the moment
- 0:41of their first deadly encounter with federal
- 0:43agents in 1993. We'll hear the voices of survivors,
- 0:47former followers and law enforcement, alongside
- 0:50a psychological breakdown of courageous control
- 0:52tactics using Stephen Hassan's bite model. How
- 0:56did everyday believers surrender their autonomy?
- 0:59Why did no one leave when things got dark? And
- 1:02what exactly made Mount Carmel a powder keg waiting
- 1:05to explode? I'm Rick Welch and this is Prophet
- 1:09of Fire. By 1990, the compound at Mount Carmel
- 1:13wasn't just a home, it was a world unto itself.
- 1:17Nestled just 13 miles outside Waco, Texas, the
- 1:20isolated property housed more than 100 followers,
- 1:23men, women, and children, devoted to one man
- 1:26they believed to be God's appointed messenger.
- 1:29Days began before dawn. Followers awoke to prayer,
- 1:33scripture reading, and lectures from Quresh.
- 1:35Meals were communal. Chores were assigned. Firearm
- 1:40maintenance and inventory were frequent responsibilities
- 1:43for the men, especially after Koresh began stockpiling
- 1:46weapons and selling parts of gun shows. The rhythm
- 1:49of life was controlled and not just spiritually.
- 1:52Koresh dictated sleep schedules, sexual relationships,
- 1:56even parenthood. Women were told they could only
- 1:59bear Koresh's children and men were celibate
- 2:02unless Koresh granted them permission. Branch
- 2:04Davidian survivor David Thibodeau says, quote,
- 2:08We were being molded. Everything we did, even
- 2:12how long we prayed, was directed. I didn't even
- 2:15realize it at the time, but I was losing my ability
- 2:18to think for myself. End quote. Koresh referred
- 2:21to this process as dying to the flesh. Members
- 2:25interpreted it as purification. In reality, it
- 2:28was obedience training. Some who joined were
- 2:31idealists. others survivors of trauma. Many were
- 2:35recruited through end times Bible studies that
- 2:37Koresh led across the US, the UK, and even Australia.
- 2:41Once invited to Mount Carmel, the outside world
- 2:44fell away. Branch Davidian survivor Sheila Martin
- 2:47says, quote, We thought we were chosen. That's
- 2:51what David said, that God brought us there. So
- 2:54when we cut off contact with our families, it
- 2:57wasn't a loss, it was a sacrifice, end quote.
- 3:00Quresh created a vocabulary that kept members
- 3:03dependent. He was the lamb, the one who alone
- 3:06could interpret the seven seals. The rest of
- 3:09the world was Babylon. Leaving Mount Carmel meant
- 3:12losing salvation. Doubt meant rebellion against
- 3:15God. Steve Hassan's Byte model outlines how cult
- 3:19leaders maintain authoritarian control by systematically
- 3:22breaking down an individual's autonomy. The first
- 3:25pillar is behavior control, the regulation of
- 3:28a person's physical reality. At Mount Carmel,
- 3:31this was absolute. Followers handed over their
- 3:34money, possessions, even their children. Koresh
- 3:37assigned living quarters, work duties, and oversaw
- 3:40all resources. Meals were rationed. Dress was
- 3:44modest. There were no holidays, no vacations,
- 3:47no TV. Time was a tool of submission. Branch
- 3:51Davidian survivor Clive Doyle says, quote, We
- 3:55lived by David's clock. There wasn't a minute
- 3:57in the day that wasn't in some way serving the
- 4:00message or preparing for the seals to open."
- 4:04Another survivor, David Thibodeau, says, "...you
- 4:07couldn't just take a walk. You couldn't skip
- 4:09a service. If you were sick, you prayed it out.
- 4:13Even your thoughts weren't your own after a while."
- 4:17Marriages were dissolved. Koresh claimed exclusive
- 4:20spiritual and sexual access to the women. Men
- 4:23were required to remain celibate including husbands
- 4:26whose wives now belong to the House of David.
- 4:29A Branch Davidian former member, Kiri Jules,
- 4:33said, quote, He told my father that God had chosen
- 4:35me for his purpose. I was 10 years old, end quote.
- 4:40Kiri's father, a devoted follower, allowed it.
- 4:43She later testified before Congress about being
- 4:46sexually abused by Koresh. These weren't just
- 4:49religious practices. They were structures of
- 4:51domination. and they were justified through one
- 4:54man's interpretation of scripture. The second
- 4:56pillar in the Byte model is information control.
- 4:59This includes restricting access to outside ideas,
- 5:03manipulating what members hear, and creating
- 5:05an us -versus -them mentality. Inside Mount Carmel,
- 5:10Quresh was the only source of truth. His sermons
- 5:12replaced news. His biblical interpretations were
- 5:15treated as prophecy. Information from the outside
- 5:18was filtered, if not eliminated entirely. Former
- 5:21Branch Davidian member Dana Okimoto says, quote,
- 5:26There were no newspapers, no radio. If something
- 5:29happened in the world, David told us what it
- 5:31meant. End quote. Another former member, Sheila
- 5:34Martin says, quote, TV was the devil's voice.
- 5:39That's what he said. He told us the government
- 5:41and media were under Satan's control. So we didn't
- 5:44trust anyone but him. End quote. Those who expressed
- 5:48doubt were labeled spiritually weak. Members
- 5:51were encouraged to report on each other's questioning.
- 5:54Surveillance, both overt and subtle, created
- 5:56fear, even among families. Former member and
- 6:00survivor David Thibodeau also says, quote, The
- 6:14community became an echo chamber. Alternative
- 6:16perspectives vanished. In time, Koresh's interpretation
- 6:20of the world became the only version of reality
- 6:22that mattered. The third pillar of the Byte model
- 6:25is thought control, shaping what members are
- 6:28allowed to think, believe, and imagine. At Mount
- 6:31Carmel, Koresh didn't just ask for belief, he
- 6:34demanded surrender of the mind. Koresh claimed
- 6:37that God had given him the ability to interpret
- 6:39scripture in ways no one else could. He called
- 6:42it the New Light. Any disagreement wasn't just
- 6:45dissent, it was rebellion against God. Survivor
- 6:48Clive Doyle says, quote, If someone raised a
- 6:52question, David would stop the study and say,
- 6:55that's the voice of Satan speaking. You learned
- 6:58to silence those thoughts real quick, end quote.
- 7:02Koresh used loaded language, terms that had deep
- 7:05meaning inside the group, but sounded harmless
- 7:07outside. Words like seals, Babylon, the bride
- 7:12and spiritual wife created a worldview unique
- 7:16to the compound. Survivor David Thibodeau says,
- 7:20To combat doubt, Caresh used thought -stopping
- 7:32techniques. Followers were instructed to pray,
- 7:36quote scripture, or repeat key phrases when fear
- 7:38or skepticism crept in. Survivor Sheila Martin
- 7:41says, quote, He said the devil attacks the mind
- 7:48first, so you just block the thought." This mental
- 7:52conditioning created reflexive obedience. Followers
- 7:55became unable or unwilling to challenge anything
- 7:58Koresh said, no matter how extreme. The final
- 8:01piece of the bite model is emotional control,
- 8:04manipulating feelings to produce guilt, fear,
- 8:07loyalty, or euphoria. Koresh was a master of
- 8:10this. Followers were made to feel unworthy without
- 8:13him. Their identity, their salvation, even their
- 8:16family relationships were tied to their devotion
- 8:18to Quresh. Former member Dana Okimoto says, quote,
- 8:22I was told if I left, I'd be destroyed in the
- 8:25fire. My children too. That's how deep the fear
- 8:28went. Quresh weaponized guilt. He reminded members
- 8:31constantly of their sinfulness, especially those
- 8:34who had doubts. Confessions were made public.
- 8:37Mistakes were tied to spiritual warfare. Kiri
- 8:40Jules says, quote, he'd say we were chosen, but
- 8:44not worthy. that God was watching, that the end
- 8:47was close, and only the obedient would be saved."
- 8:52Fear of outsiders, of the government, of Satan,
- 8:55of spiritual death kept people inside. But Quresh
- 8:59didn't only use fear. He gave his followers moments
- 9:02of elation too, promising redemption, divine
- 9:05favor, and a place at God's side in the final
- 9:07battle. David Thibodeau remembers, quote, Sometimes
- 9:11he'd get this look in his eyes and say, you're
- 9:14going to see the face of God, and you'd believe
- 9:16it. Those moments he made you feel like you were
- 9:19part of something eternal." Together, these four
- 9:23pillars of control, behavior, information, thought,
- 9:27and emotion, formed a total system of domination,
- 9:31one that was invisible to those inside, one that
- 9:34transformed skepticism into faith, and faith
- 9:36into unquestioning obedience. And it's under
- 9:39this system that life continued inside Mount
- 9:41Carmel, until early 1993, when the first signs
- 9:45of outside intervention finally arrived. By 1992,
- 9:49Mount Carmel was operating under the surface
- 9:51radar of Texas society, but the veil was beginning
- 9:54to lift. Former members were coming forward.
- 9:57Reports of child abuse and forced marriages began
- 10:00circulating. Neighbors complained about gunfire
- 10:03from the property. Rumors of illegal weapons
- 10:05stockpiling made their way to law enforcement.
- 10:07In June 1992, Former Branch Davidian Mark Brealt
- 10:11began actively warning others about Koresh, including
- 10:14Australian families whose children had joined
- 10:17the sect. Brealt reached out to authorities and
- 10:19media. His detailed reports became crucial evidence
- 10:22in the case building against Koresh. Around the
- 10:25same time, Kiri Joule's mother took legal action,
- 10:29alleging Koresh had molested her daughter. Her
- 10:31sworn statements were forwarded to federal investigators.
- 10:34The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms,
- 10:37or ATF, began an investigation in July 1992.
- 10:41Surveillance of Mount Carmel increased. Agents
- 10:44learned of Koresh's weapons business, which involved
- 10:46mail -order gun parts and a large cache of semi
- 10:49-automatic rifles. In a request for a search
- 10:52warrant, the ATF claimed Koresh's group possessed
- 10:54illegal machine guns and grenades. A plan was
- 10:57drafted to serve warrants and arrest Koresh on
- 11:00federal weapons charges. But the Branch Davidians
- 11:03were already expecting confrontation. Koresh
- 11:05had long prophesied that Babylon, his term for
- 11:09the US government, would come for them. In fact,
- 11:12he believed it would mark the opening of the
- 11:14fifth seal in the Book of Revelation. Survivor
- 11:17David Thibodeau remembers, quote, Despite opportunities
- 11:29for negotiation. the ATF opted for a show of
- 11:31force. On the morning of February 28, 1993, two
- 11:36cattle trailers full of armed federal agents
- 11:38approached the Mount Carmel compound under the
- 11:40pretense of delivering a warrant. Agents later
- 11:43said they believed the Davidians would surrender
- 11:45peacefully. But when the first shots rang out,
- 11:48whether from inside the compound or from the
- 11:51ATF's side remains debated. A firefight erupted.
- 11:55Four agents were killed. Six branch Davidians
- 11:57died. Dozens more were injured. The siege had
- 12:01begun. What followed was a 51 -day standoff.
- 12:05The FBI moved in. Negotiators made contact. Media
- 12:09from around the world descended on Waco. And
- 12:12inside Mount Carmel, over 80 men, women, and
- 12:15children waited, trapped in a theology of fear,
- 12:19obedience, and prophecy. The events that unfolded
- 12:22over the next seven weeks would raise global
- 12:24questions about law enforcement overreach, religious
- 12:27freedom, and the very nature of belief. It would
- 12:30end in flames. But that inferno began here, with
- 12:34a prophet, a compound, and the system of control
- 12:37he used to keep it all together. In our next
- 12:41episode, we take you inside the 51 -Day Siege,
- 12:44day by day. We'll hear the actual FBI negotiation
- 12:48tapes, analyze the tactics used by both sides,
- 12:51and reveal how spiritual conviction and government
- 12:54miscalculation collide in one of the most controversial
- 12:57law enforcement operations in U .S. history.
- 13:00I'm Rick Welch, and this is Prophet of Fire.
