- 0:02Speaker 1: Well, well, well. The New York native returned to his
- 0:07Speaker 1: roots this weekend. Is it just like how you remembered it?
- 0:11Speaker 2: Totally how I remembered it. Same. It was the same.
- 0:15Speaker 2: New York is always the same. New York is... Actually,
- 0:18Speaker 2: I'm going to say this about New York this weekend.
- 0:20Speaker 2: The weather was unbelievable. It was so nice this weekend.
- 0:26Speaker 2: When I got in on Friday afternoon, Friday late evening.
- 0:29Speaker 3: Or I guess late afternoon, like 7.30pm, The weather, it
- 0:33Speaker 3: was like 70 degrees and a little bit of a
- 0:36Speaker 3: nip in the air.
- 0:37Speaker 2: It was nice.
- 0:38Speaker 3: And then even Saturday for the game, it was not hot.
- 0:41Speaker 3: I went on a long walk through the city. The
- 0:44Speaker 3: weather was muy bueno.
- 0:47Speaker 1: Were you parched?
- 0:49Speaker 4: Thirsty.
- 0:50Speaker 3: Oh, so thirsty. Gosh, man, I drank so much. Especially
- 0:55Speaker 3: during the game, man, we drank so much. I mean,
- 0:58Speaker 3: that one water that I had and the one water
- 1:00Speaker 3: Wainwright had, Man, it really did a lot of damage
- 1:03Speaker 3: to the Yankees.
- 1:04Speaker 1: You got to give context here because you guys were
- 1:07Speaker 1: shouted out the next day.
- 1:09Speaker 5: Oh, I heard.
- 1:09Speaker 2: I heard all about it.
- 1:10Speaker 3: I got multiple texts from people saying that Michael K.
- 1:12Speaker 3: was complaining that we ate and drank all of the stuff.
- 1:17Speaker 3: Here's the chicken wing ice cream, which, by the way,
- 1:21Speaker 3: was delicious, okay? Because it looked just like a chicken wing,
- 1:24Speaker 3: but it was ice cream with a little chocolate-covered pretzel
- 1:27Speaker 3: stick as the bone in the middle. And let me
- 1:29Speaker 3: just say that that was absolutely amazing. Was it fried? No,
- 1:34Speaker 3: it had like cornflakes on the outside. So it was
- 1:36Speaker 3: like a cornflake batter looking thing that looked like a
- 1:39Speaker 3: chicken wing. Everyone's like, why are you eating chicken wings
- 1:41Speaker 3: on the air? I try to tell people. It wasn't
- 1:44Speaker 3: chicken wings. It was ice cream in the middle. And
- 1:47Speaker 3: it had like a little chocolate-covered pretzel rod in the
- 1:50Speaker 3: middle for the bone. That was supposed to be the bone.
- 1:53Speaker 3: And they were, hey, Yankees, you crushed that one, by
- 1:55Speaker 3: the way. That was for the MLB Eats thing they're
- 1:58Speaker 3: doing on Fox where they're doing Every team gives an item,
- 2:02Speaker 3: and the winner gets– I don't know what the winner gets,
- 2:04Speaker 3: but it's 32 teams, and they all pick an item
- 2:09Speaker 3: they want to give out, and this.
- 2:10Speaker 2: Is the one for the Yankees.
- 2:11Speaker 4: Delicious.
- 2:13Speaker 1: So you didn't empty their fridge?
- 2:16Speaker 4: No.
- 2:16Speaker 2: Sorry, it's 30 teams. Sorry, not 32.
- 2:18Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 2:19Speaker 2: But, no.
- 2:21Speaker 3: I mean, unless someone emptied the fridge, because let's not
- 2:24Speaker 3: forget there was a doubleheader, so the first game we
- 2:26Speaker 3: weren't even allowed anywhere. Okay, so we went and sat
- 2:29Speaker 3: in the press box, right? Me and Kenny Albert, Ken Rosenthal, Wayno,
- 2:32Speaker 3: we all sat in the press box.
- 2:34Speaker 2: Didn't eat anything.
- 2:34Speaker 3: Between games, we ran down, did our manager's meetings. And
- 2:38Speaker 3: then we came back up and I ate in the
- 2:40Speaker 3: press dining, which was really good, by the way. Paid
- 2:43Speaker 3: my $ 15 and ate in the press dining. I got
- 2:46Speaker 3: a Coke or a Pepsi in the press dining. And
- 2:49Speaker 3: the only thing I had the whole game was I
- 2:50Speaker 3: had a black coffee, which I always have, and I
- 2:53Speaker 3: had a bottle of water.
- 2:54Speaker 2: Other than that, we didn't have anything. So I don't
- 2:55Speaker 2: know where all the complaining came from.
- 2:57Speaker 3: But Michael K., I'll reimburse you a bottle of water.
- 3:00Speaker 3: If it hurt your heart this badly and it meant
- 3:02Speaker 3: this much to you, I'm pretty sure Michael K. doesn't
- 3:05Speaker 3: pay for the stuff in that fridge.
- 3:07Speaker 2: It's Voss. It's Voss. No, it was not. It was
- 3:11Speaker 2: not Voss. It was a much lower-rent company than Voss.
- 3:17Speaker 1: Maybe there was somebody else in the crew that swiped
- 3:20Speaker 1: a number of drinks after you guys left.
- 3:24Speaker 2: Okay. I don't know. You're not the only ones.
- 3:26Speaker 1: With access to that fridge. I don't know. This is
- 3:29Speaker 1: beyond stupid.
- 3:30Speaker 2: Maybe it was Will Fleming.
- 3:31Speaker 3: He was mad after they lost on Saturday night. He
- 3:33Speaker 3: came in and took all the drinks. He was like,
- 3:35Speaker 3: watch this. I'm going to put them in the Red
- 3:36Speaker 3: Sox booth, the Red Sox radio booth.
- 3:38Speaker 2: I don't know. But I know this. We didn't drink.
- 3:41Speaker 3: We definitely didn't eat anything out there because I was
- 3:44Speaker 3: stuffed from the press dining where I had a hamburger,
- 3:47Speaker 3: a salad.
- 3:49Speaker 2: I mean, I had all kinds of crazy stuff. They
- 3:50Speaker 2: had a pie. They had a pie, which wasn't very good.
- 3:53Speaker 2: I mean, I had all kinds of good food up there.
- 3:55Speaker 2: I'm envisioning. Anchorman. I'm envisioning way no need to kill
- 4:00Speaker 2: somebody with a trident and laying low for a little while.
- 4:03Speaker 2: Like Fox, Fox broadcast team versus Michael K and the
- 4:08Speaker 2: Yes Network team. Battle over the waters. The Kirkland brand waters.
- 4:13Speaker 2: Generic brand. We're saving money because we're over the luxury
- 4:16Speaker 2: tax waters.
- 4:19Speaker 1: Well, there is a Trident available. It's not being used
- 4:21Speaker 1: in Seattle much lately.
- 4:23Speaker 4: Oh, sorry. Sorry.
- 4:24Speaker 1: It was in my face.
- 4:26Speaker 2: Before we go, I'm sorry, Michael.
- 4:28Speaker 3: I'm sorry again about my water. Next time I'm in
- 4:30Speaker 3: New York, I will reimburse you so that you are
- 4:32Speaker 3: not angry at me.
- 4:33Speaker 2: You got to take him out for water. I mean,
- 4:36Speaker 2: just bring a whole case in. The whole case, put
- 4:39Speaker 2: it all around the fridge so they can't open it,
- 4:41Speaker 2: but there's tons of waters. That would be, it would
- 4:44Speaker 2: cost you like $ 11.
- 4:45Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 4:48Speaker 1: You got to take them out for a tap water
- 4:50Speaker 1: post game. Hey, let me get you a tap water
- 4:56Speaker 1: post game. I know a good spot across the street.
- 4:58Speaker 1: It's that good Bronx tap right there. All right, let's
- 5:02Speaker 1: talk ball. Is the NL MVP race officially over after
- 5:11Speaker 1: this weekend? AJ PCA MVP with his weekend. Plus actually
- 5:15Speaker 1: the Otani news really adds to it with, him looking
- 5:18Speaker 1: like he's not going to pitch much, if at all,
- 5:20Speaker 1: down the stretch.
- 5:21Speaker 2: Yes, it's been over for a little while now, I
- 5:24Speaker 2: feel like.
- 5:25Speaker 3: As soon as Otani quit pitching, I felt like this
- 5:27Speaker 3: was over the way PCA's playing. Then he has the
- 5:29Speaker 3: weekend that he has, the three-homer game, the best bat flip,
- 5:32Speaker 3: one of the best bat flips I've ever seen. With
- 5:36Speaker 3: his defense, with his stolen bases, the team's in the playoffs,
- 5:40Speaker 3: there's not really anything you can say that he hasn't
- 5:43Speaker 3: done for the Cubs this year.
- 5:44Speaker 2: So, Yes, I think it's over.
- 5:46Speaker 3: I think he's won it, unless something absolutely crazy happens
- 5:51Speaker 3: down here, the wire. But I don't know how he
- 5:54Speaker 3: doesn't win this. He's got more homers, more RBIs, more runs.
- 5:58Speaker 3: His F4 is killing Shohei. I don't know how he
- 6:03Speaker 3: doesn't win this, and it shouldn't be even close, to
- 6:05Speaker 3: be honest with you.
- 6:06Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, obviously I think of... The time that
- 6:10Speaker 2: Yelly should have won back-to-back, it's an injury. It's a
- 6:14Speaker 2: catastrophic injury. That's the only thing that keeps Pete Crowe
- 6:17Speaker 2: out of this. I think it wasn't solidified until this weekend.
- 6:22Speaker 2: Two major things happened. A chasm opened up in between
- 6:26Speaker 2: Shohei and Pete Crowe. The fact that he had the
- 6:29Speaker 2: three-homer game. The fact that his team needs him. And
- 6:33Speaker 2: he's playing up to MVP standards during this time. After
- 6:38Speaker 2: he showed a little waver, he didn't have the best
- 6:41Speaker 2: road trip. And then wham, he goes home and does this.
- 6:45Speaker 2: And to me, against division rival and Shohei not pitching,
- 6:50Speaker 2: opened that gap even farther. I mean, you watched on BetMGM,
- 6:54Speaker 2: the numbers just change. I think it's like minus 1,111.
- 6:58Speaker 4: 1,600.
- 6:59Speaker 2: Now 1,600. This weekend, after a three-home run game, it
- 7:05Speaker 2: was 1,100, and Shohei was at plus 650. He's widening
- 7:12Speaker 2: that gap, and this weekend was the weekend that Ryan
- 7:16Speaker 2: Sandberg told me won him his MVP. He had a big,
- 7:21Speaker 2: huge game where he hit a game-tying homer, another game-tying homer,
- 7:28Speaker 2: then the go-ahead walk-off. on the game of the week.
- 7:32Speaker 2: It was on TV. Well, Pete Crowe did it this weekend,
- 7:34Speaker 2: and I think this solidified it for him.
- 7:37Speaker 1: Did you see he did it for Sammy Sosa? AJ,
- 7:40Speaker 1: did you see that line from PCA?
- 7:42Speaker 2: I saw his quote where Sammy said, you're going to
- 7:44Speaker 2: hit three homers today, and then we went out and
- 7:45Speaker 2: did it. That was pretty cool, actually.
- 7:47Speaker 3: I mean, a lot of times people say hit a
- 7:49Speaker 3: homer and you don't do it, but he actually did it.
- 7:51Speaker 3: So it's pretty awesome that he did it. And then
- 7:55Speaker 3: Pete remembered it. It was the 150th anniversary of their
- 7:59Speaker 3: 150th year all time team that they were celebrating. So
- 8:03Speaker 3: Sammy Sosa was welcome back at a huge ovation and.
- 8:05Speaker 2: It was pretty awesome. He said this and then Pete
- 8:07Speaker 2: went out and did it.
- 8:07Speaker 3: It's one of those moments that wins you like Cratchit
- 8:10Speaker 3: said and wins you the MVP because people remember these things.
- 8:13Speaker 3: And then on Sunday night, last night, I know the
- 8:14Speaker 3: Cubs didn't win, but he hit the lead off Homer
- 8:16Speaker 3: and they got to talk about him and do all
- 8:18Speaker 3: the things. So I think it's his to lose again.
- 8:21Speaker 3: He'd have to go into a terrible slump and Shohei
- 8:23Speaker 3: would have to get white hot.
- 8:26Speaker 1: He's an exceptional defender. I mean, he is so good
- 8:30Speaker 1: on center field that helped the case too. He's a
- 8:31Speaker 1: good base runner. And then offensively, there are many changes
- 8:35Speaker 1: and I would say evolutions that we've seen from him
- 8:39Speaker 1: at the plate to that standout that continue to stand out, AJ.
- 8:42Speaker 1: I mean, he did just about nothing last year against
- 8:44Speaker 1: left-handed pitching. Now he is a force against lefty pitching.
- 8:48Speaker 1: Obviously he hits righties too, but he's hitting left-handed pitching, right?
- 8:51Speaker 1: Gets the hands in quick. And then also he's sending
- 8:53Speaker 1: the ball to all fields. He's spitting at pitches. He's
- 8:56Speaker 1: always going to be aggressive. We've gone over this before.
- 8:58Speaker 1: There is an Alex Bregman factor. It's not just Bregman.
- 9:00Speaker 1: You can learn on your own, too. But it doesn't
- 9:03Speaker 1: hurt to have a guy who's been as good as
- 9:05Speaker 1: you can be in the league for 10-plus years at
- 9:07Speaker 1: spitting at pitches and pitch selection and maximizing your strengths
- 9:12Speaker 1: sitting next to you every day.
- 9:14Speaker 3: No, that's the biggest thing that he's done. He's learned
- 9:16Speaker 3: to take pitches. And he's learned to make pitchers come
- 9:19Speaker 3: in the zone. He's taken more walks. He's hitting lefties.
- 9:21Speaker 3: He moved up on the plate. They said like this much,
- 9:25Speaker 3: like four or five inches, which they didn't really realize
- 9:28Speaker 3: would make this big of a difference. But it's just
- 9:30Speaker 3: kind of had him ready for every pitch. I think
- 9:32Speaker 3: that was the Barry Bonds story. Barry Bonds said, I'm
- 9:34Speaker 3: on top of the plate and I'm always ready for
- 9:35Speaker 3: a heater in. And it looks like Pete Carl Armstrong
- 9:38Speaker 3: was always ready for a heater in. He's just laying
- 9:40Speaker 3: off other pitches. The adjustments he's made mentally and physically,
- 9:45Speaker 3: I can't put a number on them how big they've been,
- 9:47Speaker 3: but it has been one of the greatest turnarounds, especially
- 9:50Speaker 3: as far as chasing and not chasing I've ever seen.
- 9:55Speaker 4: Let's do this.
- 9:55Speaker 1: A few minutes for seed geek, finding seats for you
- 9:59Speaker 1: on games that you want to see this week, depending
- 10:01Speaker 1: on where you are in the country. It's the best
- 10:03Speaker 1: spot to find the tickets. And for example, I'll throw
- 10:06Speaker 1: a couple of them out there. We, we already addressed
- 10:09Speaker 1: Brewers cups. That's going to be great. That's all week.
- 10:11Speaker 1: That starts with Kyle Harrison and with Clay Holmes and,
- 10:15Speaker 1: We're not going to spend a ton of time on
- 10:16Speaker 1: the Mariners today, but they've lost four in a row.
- 10:18Speaker 1: They were dusted over the weekend. It's Brian Wu against
- 10:20Speaker 1: Sonny Gray. So now they continue their series or their
- 10:23Speaker 1: season against Boston. And that's in Boston, AJ. Eventually they'll
- 10:28Speaker 1: have an easy schedule, but they not, they might not
- 10:31Speaker 1: be in it by then. There's a lot of like
- 10:32Speaker 1: angels and A's and all that, but they could be six,
- 10:35Speaker 1: seven games out by then.
- 10:37Speaker 2: Yeah. Agreed.
- 10:38Speaker 3: Don't forget White Sox Astros is this week too, which is,
- 10:42Speaker 3: It affects the playoffs a lot for both teams. Yeah,
- 10:47Speaker 3: there's some good games. There's some good series, especially going
- 10:50Speaker 3: into September, starting tomorrow into September. But Philly's Diamondbacks is
- 10:55Speaker 3: another one. There's a lot of good series that have
- 10:58Speaker 3: a lot of playoff implications, and.
- 11:01Speaker 2: It's just going to be fun. Pick one.
- 11:02Speaker 4: Pick one. Pick one.
- 11:03Speaker 2: Go to SeatGeek, buy a ticket, and go watch it
- 11:05Speaker 2: live and in person and cheer for your favorite team
- 11:08Speaker 2: or your favorite player. It's easy. Jays and Guardians. Didn't
- 11:11Speaker 2: know we needed this wild card chase coming down in September.
- 11:15Speaker 2: I didn't know it was going to be the Jays
- 11:16Speaker 2: and Guardians. I thought the Jays would be well ahead.
- 11:19Speaker 2: The Guardians will be well ahead in their division. It'll
- 11:22Speaker 2: be a good series. I think it's Gavin Williams versus
- 11:25Speaker 2: Eric Eddy, you said?
- 11:26Speaker 1: On Tuesday.
- 11:28Speaker 2: Need that.
- 11:29Speaker 1: Yep.
- 11:29Speaker 2: Need that.
- 11:32Speaker 1: The Twins look like they're, you know, falling with the
- 11:36Speaker 1: Buxton injury and Troy Melton's going to pitch in Minnesota
- 11:39Speaker 1: on Tuesday. Never somebody that you want to face when
- 11:42Speaker 1: you're trying to put must-win games together.
- 11:43Speaker 3: Were the Twins really in it? Were the Twins really
- 11:46Speaker 3: in it, though? I mean, they said they were going
- 11:49Speaker 3: for it, but they were kind of– wasn't it kind
- 11:52Speaker 3: of like a we're going for it?
- 11:55Speaker 2: Okay, just put a question mark in there. AJ will
- 12:00Speaker 2: read whatever the teleprompter says.
- 12:02Speaker 4: That's right.
- 12:03Speaker 2: I will eat all your food and drink all your water.
- 12:04Speaker 1: Exactly. Exactly. Freddie Peralta pitching Tuesday against the Mets in
- 12:10Speaker 1: Tampa Bay.
- 12:10Speaker 2: In New York or in Tampa?
- 12:12Speaker 1: No, in Tampa Bay. And RIP to that park in
- 12:14Speaker 1: the next few years, AJ. We'll maybe have time for
- 12:16Speaker 1: that at some point.
- 12:17Speaker 2: We covered it a lot on Friday.
- 12:19Speaker 4: We covered it on Friday.
- 12:20Speaker 1: But, I mean, we can cover it again at some point. But, anyway,
- 12:23Speaker 1: Territory 10, 10% off MLB tickets. SeatGeek helping us pick
- 12:26Speaker 1: the best games of the week. And you should grab
- 12:28Speaker 1: a seat to put your butt in that seat for
- 12:31Speaker 1: those games because there's playoff vibes in some of these ballparks.
- 12:34Speaker 1: It is the official ticket marketplace of Major League Baseball.
- 12:41Speaker 2: I think we need to understand and appreciate it. He
- 12:44Speaker 2: went from 29 walks last year to 71 this season.
- 12:49Speaker 2: I think he had more than 29 walks in an
- 12:50Speaker 2: entire month this year. What he's done, guys don't do.
- 12:55Speaker 2: You slowly learn your play discipline. You slowly get away
- 13:00Speaker 2: from swinging at everything and striking out a ton. He's
- 13:03Speaker 2: still striking out, but Who cares? When you have the
- 13:06Speaker 2: production that he has right now, it has been his August,
- 13:09Speaker 2: it has been his year, and he showed it this weekend.
- 13:15Speaker 1: And this is why you try and lock up elite
- 13:19Speaker 1: talent to a long-term contract. He'll have another bite at
- 13:22Speaker 1: the apple, but when he signed that extension, it feels
- 13:26Speaker 1: like long ago. It was at the end of spring training.
- 13:28Speaker 1: Six years, $ 115 million. It can max out at $ 133 million.
- 13:33Speaker 1: And that deal does not start until 2027. It includes
- 13:37Speaker 1: a club option. So he can hit free agency entering
- 13:41Speaker 1: his age 31 season. AJ, you're going to get great
- 13:47Speaker 1: value out of him. Yeah, it's huge. Great value out
- 13:50Speaker 1: of him. And the numbers feel and sound big to
- 13:53Speaker 1: anybody in real life, but in baseball terms, Pete Crowe
- 13:56Speaker 1: Armstrong is one of the best bargains in baseball for
- 13:59Speaker 1: what he's putting together for them. And he's not in
- 14:01Speaker 1: his free agent year. So it's not like you cash
- 14:03Speaker 1: out on an open market anyway, but his arbitration years
- 14:06Speaker 1: are going to pop a lot more than what he
- 14:08Speaker 1: locked in.
- 14:10Speaker 2: True.
- 14:12Speaker 3: This is why they, this is why teams sign these deals.
- 14:14Speaker 3: And listen, for every one of these contracts where people say, Oh,
- 14:18Speaker 3: look how good they did. The team did by signing
- 14:20Speaker 3: this guy. There's also the contracts that they sign where
- 14:23Speaker 3: the guy doesn't really turn out. I mean, there's a
- 14:26Speaker 3: long list of guys where they haven't earned the money
- 14:29Speaker 3: that they signed to. So this was a good one
- 14:31Speaker 3: by the Cubs. And I remember last year he held
- 14:34Speaker 3: out a little bit and he got a bunch more money.
- 14:36Speaker 3: Just think if he would have held out one more year,
- 14:38Speaker 3: he might not have had a long-term deal. So, listen,
- 14:40Speaker 3: PCA is happy in Chicago. He loves Chicago. He is
- 14:43Speaker 3: all in on everything in Chicago. Even in the winter,
- 14:46Speaker 3: he's around. He goes to Bears games. He goes to
- 14:48Speaker 3: Bulls game. I think he goes to Blackhawks games.
- 14:51Speaker 2: I think that PCA is– becoming one of the faces
- 14:57Speaker 2: of baseball.
- 14:58Speaker 3: As far as like Shohei, yes. Bryce, probably yes. There's
- 15:04Speaker 3: four or five guys that you look at in baseball
- 15:06Speaker 3: and say, I know who they are. Trout was that
- 15:08Speaker 3: guy for a long time, right? So I think PCA
- 15:11Speaker 3: is slowly starting to get to that point because you
- 15:13Speaker 3: know what the best part about PCA is? People love
- 15:15Speaker 3: to watch him because he's fun, he's laughing, he's having
- 15:17Speaker 3: a good time. And that means something.
- 15:20Speaker 2: There's always something going on. He's stealing bases. When he's
- 15:23Speaker 2: on defense, he runs balls down. He's got a cannon
- 15:25Speaker 2: of an arm. He's a five-tool player. But I would
- 15:30Speaker 2: love it if somebody with all these analytics would be
- 15:32Speaker 2: able to figure this out. You'll never be able to
- 15:34Speaker 2: figure it out. But how much better a player can
- 15:38Speaker 2: feel play when they get extended like this. He gets
- 15:43Speaker 2: an extension, and the fact that he doesn't have to
- 15:45Speaker 2: worry about his future, worry about I got to put
- 15:49Speaker 2: up numbers to do this. He just has to go
- 15:51Speaker 2: out and play. There is a value there that will
- 15:55Speaker 2: never be equated, but there is a huge value and
- 15:58Speaker 2: a weight off of some people's chest. I'm not saying everybody,
- 16:02Speaker 2: and people will get at me. They'll be like, oh, well,
- 16:04Speaker 2: he grew up rich. Nobody knows what other people are feeling,
- 16:08Speaker 2: but I know that that feeling of security can help
- 16:12Speaker 2: a lot of players play better.
- 16:16Speaker 1: And for the Cubs, credit to them to go after
- 16:19Speaker 1: Clay Holmes, Kevin Gossman, those types to try and supplement
- 16:22Speaker 1: what is a lineup that features the MVP of the
- 16:26Speaker 1: National League right now. You've got to capitalize off a
- 16:29Speaker 1: prime season like this. Now, Cubs fans are going to say,
- 16:31Speaker 1: hold up. Have you seen our pitching in general lately?
- 16:33Speaker 1: Managa beat up yesterday. They've had some bullpen problems.
- 16:36Speaker 4: I get it.
- 16:37Speaker 1: But at least they tried. They brought into what I
- 16:39Speaker 1: think are valuable arms that will help this team thrive.
- 16:42Speaker 1: in October. They still got to figure some things out pitching-wise.
- 16:45Speaker 2: Clay Holmes pitching today against the Brewers.
- 16:47Speaker 3: Clay Holmes pitching today in a huge series. They play
- 16:50Speaker 3: seven of their next ten against the Brewers, so that's
- 16:52Speaker 3: going to obviously decide that division, whether it's a race
- 16:56Speaker 3: or not down the stretch. But you notice who they
- 16:58Speaker 3: lined up to pitch in that series. Imanaga was not
- 17:00Speaker 3: lined up to pitch in that series. Clay Holmes, right,
- 17:04Speaker 3: is pitching the game one. I think tomorrow they is...
- 17:08Speaker 3: Who's tomorrow?
- 17:09Speaker 4: Hold on.
- 17:11Speaker 2: Isn't Assad tomorrow or is No, tomorrow's Matthew Boyd, and
- 17:15Speaker 2: then I think Gossman's Wednesday.
- 17:20Speaker 1: Peterson Wednesday.
- 17:22Speaker 3: Oh, Peterson, another new face, right? A guy who's been
- 17:25Speaker 3: really good for them. And then Gossman's Thursday.
- 17:28Speaker 4: Thursday.
- 17:29Speaker 2: Thursday is Gossman.
- 17:31Speaker 1: That's the Fox game, Thursday.
- 17:32Speaker 3: They missed Shota. They made your Shota pitch on Sunday,
- 17:37Speaker 3: and then so they have all these new guys, Gossman, Holmes,
- 17:40Speaker 3: and Peterson. pitching in one of their biggest series of
- 17:43Speaker 3: the year, obviously. I mean, I know they're a few
- 17:46Speaker 3: games back. How many games are they back? They're back eight.
- 17:48Speaker 3: So even if they win all seven, they're still behind them.
- 17:51Speaker 3: But this is a chance for them to solidify the
- 17:53Speaker 3: four spot in the National League as far as wild
- 17:57Speaker 3: cards go.
- 17:58Speaker 2: And it puts a little pressure. If they can win
- 18:00Speaker 2: these series, it puts a little bit of pressure on
- 18:02Speaker 2: the Brewers.
- 18:04Speaker 1: Jack Summers is here. You can hear him on Snakes
- 18:06Speaker 1: Territory multiple times per week. And also he covers the
- 18:09Speaker 1: team if you want to. Read the written version on SI.
- 18:12Speaker 1: He covers the Diamondbacks. Jack, good to talk to you.
- 18:14Speaker 1: Today is a big day. It is Quetel Marte apology day.
- 18:18Speaker 1: So tell us what to expect here.
- 18:21Speaker 4: Well, it's a bit of a mystery whether or not
- 18:23Speaker 4: we'll get to speak to him, but the game plan
- 18:25Speaker 4: is for Quetel Marte to address his teammates, issue some
- 18:29Speaker 4: sort of apology, and hopefully that apology will hit the
- 18:34Speaker 4: mark when it comes to sincerity and properly addressing questions
- 18:39Speaker 4: the situation, not only what happened, but what's going to
- 18:41Speaker 4: happen going forward. I think that's what his teammates are
- 18:44Speaker 4: most concerned about, is can they trust him going forward?
- 18:48Speaker 4: And so he has to reassure them if he's going
- 18:51Speaker 4: to continue to have their support, as well as, of course,
- 18:54Speaker 4: not do this again.
- 18:57Speaker 3: Jack, you guys, you don't think the media is going
- 19:00Speaker 3: to get to talk to him? They're just going to
- 19:01Speaker 3: keep the media away from him?
- 19:03Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 19:04Speaker 2: I mean, it's... Doesn't he need to speak with the
- 19:07Speaker 2: media and explain something?
- 19:10Speaker 3: Not just, I get that it's just his teammates, but
- 19:13Speaker 3: doesn't he need a little bit to kind of take
- 19:15Speaker 3: responsibility and stand there? And before we get into this
- 19:18Speaker 3: whole craziness, because this whole story now is just crazy.
- 19:22Speaker 4: Right. I mean, I presume he will, but we haven't
- 19:24Speaker 4: received like official notice, like tell Marte will be made available.
- 19:29Speaker 4: So I'm not taking anything for granted. I'm just going
- 19:31Speaker 4: to show up there with my phone and my camera and,
- 19:34Speaker 4: you know, be ready to record and ask questions and
- 19:38Speaker 4: dig into it as much as we're allowed to with him.
- 19:41Speaker 4: But it's not a hundred percent certain that we'll get
- 19:44Speaker 4: that opportunity. Hopefully we will.
- 19:46Speaker 2: When this started, everyone's like, oh no, this is a distraction.
- 19:49Speaker 2: This is a distraction. Now we're about, I don't know,
- 19:51Speaker 2: 10 days, two weeks into it. Has it been a
- 19:54Speaker 2: distraction for this team?
- 19:56Speaker 4: I think the players on the field, the first day
- 19:59Speaker 4: or two for sure it was. I mean, they didn't
- 20:01Speaker 4: even admit it as much. But I believe that once
- 20:03Speaker 4: they got past that, they won that series finale and
- 20:07Speaker 4: with Boston, and then they just went on about their
- 20:10Speaker 4: business and playing as hard as they can. That's what
- 20:13Speaker 4: they do. So I don't think they like being asked
- 20:16Speaker 4: about it, but there's really not much choice. I just
- 20:19Speaker 4: think between the white lines, it hasn't impacted them. I
- 20:22Speaker 4: don't think they're thinking about Quetel Marte when they're fielding
- 20:25Speaker 4: a ground or a shortstop or running down a fly
- 20:27Speaker 4: ball in the outfield or standing in the batter's box. Now,
- 20:31Speaker 4: they're going to be annoyed today. I mean, it's not
- 20:33Speaker 4: going to be a fun day for them with all
- 20:35Speaker 4: the hubbub and everything going on around it. So could
- 20:38Speaker 4: it be a distraction today in the first game of
- 20:40Speaker 4: this critical series? Hard to say. We all love a
- 20:43Speaker 4: redemption arc. Hopefully he goes out and has a really
- 20:46Speaker 4: good game and helps them win a game for his
- 20:48Speaker 4: sake and for his teammates' sake.
- 20:50Speaker 2: Has there been any physical ramifications from it in the
- 20:53Speaker 2: sense of like, look, when you lose a guy from
- 20:55Speaker 2: the lineup, yes, nobody can replace what he should give
- 20:59Speaker 2: you when he's hot. Nolan Arenado playing too much where
- 21:02Speaker 2: you're like, okay, you know, Perdomo would have gotten this
- 21:05Speaker 2: day off. Have you seen a physical, you know, ramification
- 21:09Speaker 2: from him not being there in this situation?
- 21:12Speaker 4: Unknown caller. Sorry about that.
- 21:15Speaker 2: That's okay. We don't know who the caller is and
- 21:17Speaker 2: that's fine. You, you need, you want to answer it.
- 21:20Speaker 2: I want you to answer it so that we know
- 21:22Speaker 2: who the caller is, but we'll never find out.
- 21:25Speaker 4: Um, so yeah, In this case, I do believe that
- 21:28Speaker 4: there have been ramifications. I think that Nolan has played
- 21:31Speaker 4: a little bit more than he should have been. He's
- 21:34Speaker 4: just dealing with multiple things. He had that core injury.
- 21:39Speaker 4: A little difficult to explain what it was, but it
- 21:41Speaker 4: wasn't an oblique, but, you know, it was something intercostal, whatever.
- 21:45Speaker 4: And then he suffered a sprained thumb in batting practice. And,
- 21:50Speaker 4: you know, you just watch him running and moving. And,
- 21:52Speaker 4: I mean, the guy is definitely not 100%. At the
- 21:55Speaker 4: same time, you know, Perdomo's, I think his knee is
- 21:57Speaker 4: bothering him a little bit. And then Ildemar Vargas, I mean,
- 22:01Speaker 4: you know, he's been a nice story for them as
- 22:03Speaker 4: far as filling in as a utility player, but he
- 22:06Speaker 4: gets exposed when he plays every day. And, you know,
- 22:09Speaker 4: he's been in a pretty bad batting slump for the
- 22:12Speaker 4: better part of two weeks and hasn't hit much. So,
- 22:14Speaker 4: I mean, they're missing him on the field, both physically
- 22:17Speaker 4: and production-wise. There's no doubt about that. You know, I
- 22:20Speaker 4: think they're six in their last 12 games. easily could
- 22:24Speaker 4: have been a game or two better had they had
- 22:26Speaker 4: Marte in there playing like he should have been.
- 22:31Speaker 1: Kratz, I think what people are seeing on the screen
- 22:33Speaker 1: and what we'll explain to the podcast audio crowd right
- 22:36Speaker 1: now is how I'm a little summer action with Fabletics,
- 22:39Speaker 1: and then you take us into fall and a little
- 22:41Speaker 1: more layering.
- 22:42Speaker 2: And here in the East, I'm still going to go
- 22:44Speaker 2: to the shore in the fall. I love the shore
- 22:46Speaker 2: in September. You come in from the beach, you throw
- 22:49Speaker 2: on a sweatshirt like this, It's light, it's breathable, but
- 22:53Speaker 2: you know what? It is so comfortable.
- 22:55Speaker 1: Yeah, and for me, I love working out, but also
- 22:58Speaker 1: I'm getting more into tennis, paddle, a little bit of pickleball,
- 23:01Speaker 1: all that. I want lightweight, breathable, comfortable, and affordable. Let's
- 23:06Speaker 1: talk about that. The discounts for Fabletics are massive when
- 23:10Speaker 1: you sign up as a VIP. Shop now at fabletics.com

- 23:20Speaker 1: Be sure to select foul when prompted to unlock this offer.

- 23:25Speaker 1: that's fabletics.com slash foul for 70 to 80% off everything
- 23:30Speaker 1: as a new VIP.
- 23:32Speaker 2: Check. Do we know the truth behind this?
- 23:34Speaker 3: Because there's all these different reports about the team knew
- 23:38Speaker 3: he wasn't going to come to the game and he
- 23:40Speaker 3: asked for an MRI and he didn't get it.
- 23:43Speaker 2: And that's why they put him on. Can you just
- 23:46Speaker 2: give me what we know is true in this story?
- 23:49Speaker 3: Because like I said earlier, it's gotten kind of just,
- 23:52Speaker 3: there's a lot of rumors from people flying this and
- 23:54Speaker 3: this and this.
- 23:55Speaker 2: What do we know that's true?
- 23:57Speaker 4: So piecing together the timeline has been a little bit
- 24:00Speaker 4: difficult because there have been contradictory reports, but It's important
- 24:03Speaker 4: to note we haven't heard anything from Cattell, right? So
- 24:06Speaker 4: we don't have anything from his side of the story.
- 24:09Speaker 4: I do know that a couple hours before the game,
- 24:12Speaker 4: Tori Lavello had indicated to the media that he was
- 24:15Speaker 4: reaching out to Cattell to find out if he could
- 24:18Speaker 4: actually play at second base instead of DH because they
- 24:21Speaker 4: were hesitant to put Nolan back out there or didn't
- 24:24Speaker 4: know if he could play. But at that point in time,
- 24:27Speaker 4: they didn't tell the media that he wasn't there. You know,
- 24:31Speaker 4: and then so exactly what transpired, according to the team,
- 24:35Speaker 4: and according to Tori Lavella, he reached out multiple times
- 24:39Speaker 4: and was getting very little back, as he explained it.
- 24:42Speaker 4: Derek Hall was on the local radio station, team president
- 24:47Speaker 4: Derek Hall, and he said that he stayed behind at
- 24:50Speaker 4: the hotel Monday evening, and they knew that Cattell was
- 24:53Speaker 4: in his room at that point, and he tried to
- 24:56Speaker 4: reach out to him several times but wasn't able to
- 24:58Speaker 4: connect with him directly. They were apparently only communicating through
- 25:02Speaker 4: the agent, but that communication was sparse and not very helpful.
- 25:07Speaker 4: Once the game was over, Torrey indicated he wasn't quite
- 25:11Speaker 4: sure where Cattell was, his point being he didn't know
- 25:14Speaker 4: if he was still in the hotel or if he
- 25:15Speaker 4: had left. So once the game was over, I don't know,
- 25:19Speaker 4: and nobody's made it really clear. I have a personal
- 25:22Speaker 4: belief that he left either that night or early the
- 25:25Speaker 4: next morning. He didn't fly back to Arizona immediately. until
- 25:30Speaker 4: Thursday to go get his MRI. So my question is
- 25:34Speaker 4: partially going to be, when did you leave Boston and
- 25:37Speaker 4: where did you go before you went back to Arizona
- 25:41Speaker 4: to get your MRI and to meet with Mike Hazen
- 25:43Speaker 4: and Tori Lovello on the subsequent Thursday? So that's a
- 25:47Speaker 4: question I have. I don't know if anybody else is
- 25:48Speaker 4: going to ask that before I get my chance.
- 25:51Speaker 2: If you're able to ask that question, there's going to
- 25:54Speaker 2: be another layer that we're going to peel back, and
- 25:55Speaker 2: that's so exciting for me. I thought that was it.
- 25:58Speaker 2: So anyway, Jack, I appreciate that. I don't think season
- 26:02Speaker 2: series necessarily dictate whether or not it's going to be
- 26:05Speaker 2: a playoff matchup or not, but the Diamondbacks are going
- 26:09Speaker 2: to look across the field at a playoff team in
- 26:11Speaker 2: the Phillies. They've had their ups and downs. They're not
- 26:13Speaker 2: a perfect team at all. How do they stack up
- 26:16Speaker 2: against this team when you look at it and the Diamondbacks–
- 26:20Speaker 2: want to be a playoff team, but how do they
- 26:23Speaker 2: stack up against a playoff team like the Phillies this series?
- 26:27Speaker 4: Well, it's interesting to note, if you look at the
- 26:29Speaker 4: full season body of work, they've scored per game virtually
- 26:34Speaker 4: the exact same number of runs. Phillies 4.54, D-backs 4.53. However,
- 26:39Speaker 4: in August, the Phillies have been on fire. They scored
- 26:42Speaker 4: like well over five runs per game for the month
- 26:44Speaker 4: of August. Obviously, they've been hot in the lineup and
- 26:47Speaker 4: they've got two big studs that are carrying them. But really,
- 26:51Speaker 4: where the rubber meets the road is in the pitching
- 26:53Speaker 4: staff and in the starting pitching. The D-backs are going
- 26:56Speaker 4: to miss Zach Wheeler, of course. He just pitched yesterday.
- 26:59Speaker 4: But they still, you know, got to face a hot
- 27:02Speaker 4: Aaron Nola. He hasn't had a good season, but he's
- 27:04Speaker 4: been very good his last six starts. And Jesus Lozardo
- 27:07Speaker 4: is a stud. And even Andrew Painter, you know, he's
- 27:10Speaker 4: pitched 13 innings over his last two starts. On the
- 27:13Speaker 4: flip side, D-backs are rolling out Brandon Fott and Eduardo–
- 27:17Speaker 4: Rodriguez for the first two games, and they've been pitching
- 27:20Speaker 4: really well for the Diamondbacks, you know, especially Eduardo. He's
- 27:24Speaker 4: 14-4 with a 2-5 ERA. Peripherals be darned. Stack Geeks,
- 27:30Speaker 4: we look at the underlying stuff a lot, but, you know,
- 27:32Speaker 4: he's been beating them all year just being a professional pitcher. So,
- 27:35Speaker 4: you know, it's an interesting matchup. I mean, the Phillies
- 27:39Speaker 4: roster-wise appear to be the stronger team, and they certainly
- 27:43Speaker 4: You know, they're up on them by three and a half,
- 27:45Speaker 4: four games, and they also have much better playoff odds
- 27:47Speaker 4: if you look at all that. So the D-backs are
- 27:50Speaker 4: up against it, but they're at home, and it's a
- 27:52Speaker 4: short series. So, you know, if they can take two
- 27:54Speaker 4: of three here and put a little bit of a
- 27:56Speaker 4: dent in the distance between them and the Phillies, then
- 27:59Speaker 4: they can continue pressing not only to just try to
- 28:01Speaker 4: make the postseason, but maybe even run down, you know,
- 28:04Speaker 4: a second spot in the wild card. Long shot, no doubt, but,
- 28:07Speaker 4: you know, this is September baseball. these leads are not
- 28:11Speaker 4: all that big. We've seen a lot of crazy things before.
- 28:14Speaker 2: For sure. Corbin Burns, would he be a help in
- 28:18Speaker 2: that rotation? If he makes it back, what's the expectation?
- 28:22Speaker 2: Is it waiting until he gets back to be 100%
- 28:25Speaker 2: Corbin Burns, or could it be an opener, a three
- 28:28Speaker 2: inning type of person down the stretch?
- 28:31Speaker 4: So the expectation is that Corbin Burns is going to
- 28:33Speaker 4: rejoin the team later this week against the Houston Astros.
- 28:37Speaker 4: In his most recent rehab outing, he went, um, Two
- 28:40Speaker 4: innings and 17 pitches. He was very efficient. He was
- 28:43Speaker 4: getting the Giants AAA team to hit into a lot
- 28:46Speaker 4: of ground balls against his cutter, which was averaging 92
- 28:50Speaker 4: miles an hour, about two miles an hour below his
- 28:53Speaker 4: season average from last year. I'm sure he went down
- 28:55Speaker 4: to the bullpen and threw another 20 pitches or so.
- 28:58Speaker 4: The target was to get him to 40 pitches, and
- 29:01Speaker 4: he was just too efficient. But as you know, I mean,
- 29:03Speaker 4: he only had two up-downs. So clearly they're going to
- 29:07Speaker 4: limit him to three up-downs, hope that he can get
- 29:09Speaker 4: through three innings in his first outing. I have questions
- 29:15Speaker 4: about this. I spoke about this quite bluntly on the
- 29:18Speaker 4: most recent Snakes Territory. And I think it's a huge risk.
- 29:21Speaker 4: I think it's a bit of a panic move. I
- 29:24Speaker 4: think maybe the player himself is pushing so hard and
- 29:26Speaker 4: the team is acquiescing. But at the same time, they're struggling.
- 29:30Speaker 4: I mean, they've run out some rookies that have only
- 29:32Speaker 4: been able to give them like four plus innings, you know,
- 29:35Speaker 4: can't quite easily finish the fifth inning, giving up two,
- 29:38Speaker 4: three runs. But for me, the difference between that level
- 29:42Speaker 4: of production that they're getting from those rookies and what
- 29:45Speaker 4: Burns is likely to give them in this first outing
- 29:47Speaker 4: is absolutely not worth the risk to a guy that
- 29:50Speaker 4: they owe $ 140 million to. He's making $ 35 million a
- 29:54Speaker 4: year for the next four years after this. He's coming
- 29:57Speaker 4: off a Tommy John surgery and already had a setback
- 30:00Speaker 4: in his shoulder. And I just think that the risk
- 30:02Speaker 4: is off the charts, personally. I think this is crazy.
- 30:05Speaker 4: I think that he needs to be built up properly
- 30:07Speaker 4: before he goes into a major league game and pitches
- 30:09Speaker 4: with that level of adrenaline. You guys know, I mean,
- 30:12Speaker 4: it's not the same. Pitching a rehab outing, you know,
- 30:16Speaker 4: for the Reno Aces is not the same as going
- 30:19Speaker 4: into Houston and fighting for your playoff lives.
- 30:23Speaker 3: Well, Jack, you're right. You're 100% right. Where's Zach Allen?
- 30:27Speaker 3: Where's Zach Allen at on his rehab?
- 30:29Speaker 2: Is he close?
- 30:31Speaker 4: So he went an inning and two-thirds on Sunday. He
- 30:34Speaker 4: faced eight batters, retired five of them. His stuff didn't
- 30:40Speaker 4: look great. You know, if you look at all the
- 30:42Speaker 4: stack cast stuff, I mean, his velocity, his induced vertical break,
- 30:46Speaker 4: all of that, you know, fun stuff that we geeks
- 30:49Speaker 4: geek out on. It just doesn't look like anything's really
- 30:53Speaker 4: any different. and he certainly wasn't efficient. He used 46
- 30:56Speaker 4: pitches against those eight batters. So, you know, he still
- 31:00Speaker 4: has work to do. I don't think he's eligible to
- 31:02Speaker 4: come off the 60-day IL until September 7th, so I'm
- 31:06Speaker 4: sure he's going to have at least one more rehab outing.
- 31:10Speaker 4: We'll see where that goes. I mean, I don't expect,
- 31:12Speaker 4: I honestly don't expect Zach Gallin to come Riding in
- 31:15Speaker 4: with the white hat and save this rotation and, you know,
- 31:19Speaker 4: be able to come out of the gate and give
- 31:20Speaker 4: them a couple of strong starts before the season ends
- 31:23Speaker 4: and be part of a postseason rotation. I'm just not
- 31:26Speaker 4: there with him.
- 31:26Speaker 3: I mean, it looks like it, Jack. It's going to
- 31:29Speaker 3: come down to the last series, right? Don't the Diamondbacks
- 31:31Speaker 3: play the Padres the last series of the year?
- 31:34Speaker 4: Yes, they do.
- 31:35Speaker 3: It'd be kind of important, kind of an important series.
- 31:37Speaker 3: Has Merrill Kelly fixed his tipping yet? Did they fix
- 31:40Speaker 3: that problem?
- 31:40Speaker 1: No.
- 31:41Speaker 4: Well, he looked pretty good his last outing, so hopefully that's,
- 31:44Speaker 4: you know, been resolved. I think that, you know, this
- 31:48Speaker 4: isn't the first time this year that the tipping issues
- 31:50Speaker 4: have come up. I mean, I think I personally have
- 31:53Speaker 4: always believed that Zach Gallin was tipping. Not tipping. God,
- 31:57Speaker 4: I hate to use that word tipping because I get
- 31:59Speaker 4: in trouble every time I say it. But, you know, somehow,
- 32:02Speaker 4: some way the hitters know what's coming, whether it's the
- 32:04Speaker 4: way he's tunneling, where his release angle is and all
- 32:07Speaker 4: of that. even if it's not straight up, you know,
- 32:10Speaker 4: how he's holding the ball in his glove and whether
- 32:11Speaker 4: his glove flares and all that, you know, hitters knew
- 32:14Speaker 4: what was coming. And the similar things seem to have
- 32:17Speaker 4: been happening to Brandon Fott. And now it happened to
- 32:20Speaker 4: Merrill Kelly. In Merrill Kelly's case, it was a little
- 32:23Speaker 4: bit more overt. We had the third base coach for
- 32:26Speaker 4: the Cubs basically signaling to the runner on second base.
- 32:31Speaker 4: And that created a whole kerfuffle, of course. But, you know,
- 32:36Speaker 4: I don't know why this keeps happening. The Diamondbacks have
- 32:38Speaker 4: to dig back in. They got a person that's responsible
- 32:41Speaker 4: for reviewing all this video. And the coaches, of course,
- 32:44Speaker 4: they're responsible for this too and trying to help the
- 32:47Speaker 4: pitcher spot this. And it's happened several times this year, clearly.
- 32:55Speaker 4: All right.
- 32:55Speaker 1: Well, wait, I didn't realize. So it's the end of
- 32:58Speaker 1: the season, the last, what, three games for Padres Diamondbacks,
- 33:02Speaker 1: what AJ was saying earlier there?
- 33:04Speaker 4: Yeah, exactly. Same as last year. I mean, D-backs needed
- 33:07Speaker 4: to go into San Diego and sweep them last year
- 33:08Speaker 4: to get in the playoffs, and of course they weren't
- 33:10Speaker 4: able to do that. And, you know, D-backs are half
- 33:13Speaker 4: game up. Their composite playoff odds are almost exactly the same.
- 33:18Speaker 4: I mean, it's a coin flip. It's really down to
- 33:20Speaker 4: those two teams for that third spot, unless, you know,
- 33:24Speaker 4: one of them gets extremely hot and the Phillies falter.
- 33:28Speaker 4: You know, if one of those teams just goes, you know,
- 33:31Speaker 4: lightning on fire, And Phillies stumbled. It's possible that one
- 33:35Speaker 4: of them could get the number two spot and Philly
- 33:37Speaker 4: drops down. But it's almost 90% sure that this is
- 33:41Speaker 4: going down on the final weekend of the season. So
- 33:44Speaker 4: it's going to be exciting. Season series is tied, by
- 33:46Speaker 4: the way, 5-5.
- 33:47Speaker 2: Why are you saying the Phillies? What about the Cubs?
- 33:51Speaker 2: The Phillies and the Cubs have the same record, don't they?
- 33:54Speaker 4: I thought the Cubs, maybe they fell back today. I'm sorry.
- 33:57Speaker 4: You're right. Oh. I would say that the Cubs probably
- 34:00Speaker 4: a little bit stronger, but, you know, you could count
- 34:02Speaker 4: them in that as well, for sure.
- 34:04Speaker 2: Hey, don't be selling the Cubs short. They're capable of anything.
- 34:08Speaker 4: Yeah, for sure. Ten-game winning streak, ten-game losing streak.
- 34:11Speaker 2: Jack's a big run differential guy. That's why he likes
- 34:14Speaker 2: the Cubs better than the Phillies. Big run differential guy.
- 34:18Speaker 1: Don't get me started. Don't get me too excited on
- 34:21Speaker 1: a Monday.
- 34:22Speaker 4: Jack, thank you. Appreciate you. Oh, buddy, Bob will skewer
- 34:24Speaker 4: me for that.
- 34:26Speaker 1: Hey, same. Trust me. Not a run differential guy. Everyone
- 34:29Speaker 1: check out Snake's territory. They're going to be all over
- 34:30Speaker 1: this Quetel Marte story all week long. Yeah, it's been
- 34:34Speaker 1: going on for weeks. It's going to continue this week
- 34:36Speaker 1: when he returns, when we hear what teammates said about
- 34:39Speaker 1: his apology, when he talks to the media at some point.
- 34:42Speaker 1: A lot still to cover here.
- 34:44Speaker 4: Thanks, Jack. Thank you. Great to see you guys. Thank you.
- 34:47Speaker 1: Hey, did you guys see this? Warren Schaefer, the Rockies manager,
- 34:51Speaker 1: is benching Cole Keurig for a couple games. after he
- 34:54Speaker 1: flipped off fans in Atlanta on Saturday. And then the
- 34:57Speaker 1: quote from Craig, the rookie, who's been exciting. Braves fans
- 35:00Speaker 1: are pretty passionate themselves. Kudos to them. But that gesture
- 35:03Speaker 1: can't happen. Two games? I would have said one. AJ,
- 35:06Speaker 1: what would you have done for punishment?
- 35:13Speaker 3: Somebody that may or may not have done this before
- 35:16Speaker 3: and didn't get suspended, I feel like you have a
- 35:20Speaker 3: talk to the guy and say don't ever do that again.
- 35:27Speaker 2: I don't know. I don't know. I just don't– I
- 35:29Speaker 2: don't know.
- 35:30Speaker 3: I mean, his was so blatant, though. He didn't even
- 35:31Speaker 3: try to hide it. But then I want to know
- 35:33Speaker 3: what they said to him because, you know, there's things that–
- 35:36Speaker 3: certain things that are said that can just make you
- 35:38Speaker 3: snap on a– I don't know.
- 35:40Speaker 2: I don't know. That's what they felt was fair, so
- 35:43Speaker 2: that's what they're doing.
- 35:44Speaker 4: Fine.
- 35:45Speaker 3: And because it was so public, they had to do it.
- 35:47Speaker 2: But, yeah, he lost. He snapped. It was in the moment.
- 35:52Speaker 2: He blacked out. What do you want me to say?
- 35:54Speaker 2: Two games is perfect. Way to go, Rockies. I mean,
- 35:57Speaker 2: I think they want to set a standard. I think
- 35:59Speaker 2: they want to set a standard of like, hey, we're
- 36:02Speaker 2: not going to do that. We're not going to be
- 36:03Speaker 2: that type of organization players. So they did it. It's
- 36:08Speaker 2: always intriguing to me when somebody flips off somebody because
- 36:11Speaker 2: everybody does it differently. Like, do people go with the
- 36:14Speaker 2: like half middle finger? Do they go with like a massive,
- 36:18Speaker 2: huge middle finger? Do they hide it? He didn't hide it.
- 36:21Speaker 2: So it's always interesting. Everybody has their own like character
- 36:24Speaker 2: to flipping somebody off.
- 36:26Speaker 4: Hmm.
- 36:27Speaker 1: And he did pinch hit, right? And then he stayed
- 36:30Speaker 1: in the game. So that's something.
- 36:33Speaker 2: So they suspended him from starting.
- 36:36Speaker 1: Yeah, a suspension from starting versus a suspension from game.
- 36:39Speaker 2: I don't know. How many times did you do it, AJ?
- 36:45Speaker 2: How many times would you say you did it? Once
- 36:48Speaker 2: only or once that you got caught? You did it
- 36:52Speaker 2: once and you got caught one time? Not a chance.
- 36:56Speaker 5: No.
- 37:00Speaker 2: No speaking English.
- 37:02Speaker 1: It looks like a kid when you ask him how
- 37:04Speaker 1: many cookies he took from the cookie jar.
- 37:05Speaker 2: It happened one time. I've told this story on here before. No,
- 37:08Speaker 2: I know. It was Heroes of the Giants.
- 37:11Speaker 3: I got called into the office by Brian Sabian, and
- 37:14Speaker 3: I tried to be all discreet about it because some
- 37:16Speaker 3: guy was wearing me out, and I had hit him
- 37:18Speaker 3: to a double play, and I was running off the field,
- 37:20Speaker 3: and I went kind of itchy-scratchy on my face. And
- 37:23Speaker 3: the camera caught it, and I got called into the
- 37:25Speaker 3: office the next day, and he's like, did you realize
- 37:26Speaker 3: you did this? I was like, I didn't do that. Well,
- 37:29Speaker 3: here's the video proof. I was like, okay, maybe I
- 37:32Speaker 3: did it.
- 37:33Speaker 2: I did.
- 37:42Speaker 4: It.
- 37:42Speaker 1: FT Breaking News. The Baltimore Orioles are in this wild
- 37:45Speaker 1: card race, and they are claiming Luis Robert Jr. off
- 37:48Speaker 1: of waivers from the Mets. Chelsea Jane's first reporting the news.
- 37:52Speaker 1: The Orioles add Robert Jr. for the stretch run here.
- 37:55Speaker 1: It has been a disappointing season for Baltimore, but they
- 37:58Speaker 1: are showing fans they're still in this thing. They had
- 38:00Speaker 1: a big sweep over the weekend. They take down the A's.
- 38:04Speaker 1: They stay in a good spot, a good enough spot
- 38:06Speaker 1: to compete for that wild card that everyone in the
- 38:08Speaker 1: American League that's been mediocre has a shot at. AJ,
- 38:11Speaker 1: you watched a lot of Luis Robert over the years.
- 38:14Speaker 1: Then he signs or gets traded to the Mets. Disappointing
- 38:17Speaker 1: season besides, what, maybe the last two weeks of Mets
- 38:20Speaker 1: are going to end up saving a lot of money
- 38:21Speaker 1: by the way, because they're above way above all the
- 38:23Speaker 1: luxury tax numbers. So they're saving about $ 5 million to
- 38:27Speaker 1: get rid of Luis Robert for one month and give
- 38:30Speaker 1: him to the Orioles. So there is a party in
- 38:33Speaker 1: Queens this afternoon, but do you think legitimately that he
- 38:36Speaker 1: could be a big help to the Orioles to get
- 38:37Speaker 1: them into the playoffs?
- 38:39Speaker 2: How are the crowds in Baltimore? That's my first question.
- 38:41Speaker 2: How are the crowds?
- 38:42Speaker 1: It's a great question.
- 38:45Speaker 3: Because we know he can only play in front of
- 38:47Speaker 3: a certain number. He's did he, when they claimed him, did,
- 38:50Speaker 3: Mike Elias call him and Luis Roberts say, listen, Mike,
- 38:53Speaker 3: the crowds need to be between this number and this
- 38:55Speaker 3: number in order for me to perform. If they're too big,
- 38:58Speaker 3: I can't do it. If they're too small, I can't
- 38:59Speaker 3: do it. So that would have been my first question.
- 39:01Speaker 3: And then second of all, does this mean Luis Roberts
- 39:04Speaker 3: is going to be a free agent or will the
- 39:06Speaker 3: Orioles pick up the next $ 20 million option that he has?
- 39:10Speaker 3: That's the real question is, I mean, and the fact
- 39:12Speaker 3: that the Orioles are still in this just goes to
- 39:14Speaker 3: show you how bad the American League is.
- 39:19Speaker 2: I don't even know what to say. Like, honestly, everybody's
- 39:23Speaker 2: going to say, well, what if he hits a big homer? Yeah, obviously. Yeah.
- 39:27Speaker 2: I mean, I would have been a help to a
- 39:28Speaker 2: team if I hit a big homer. Like, is this
- 39:32Speaker 2: a need that are they just like, man, I hope
- 39:34Speaker 2: this kind of works out because it's a lot of
- 39:36Speaker 2: money for what I thought was a cash strapped Orioles team.
- 39:41Speaker 1: They're not. I mean, Who said they're cash-strapped? No, I'm
- 39:46Speaker 1: going to defend them on that part. Have they made
- 39:48Speaker 1: wrong moves?
- 39:49Speaker 2: Sure.
- 39:50Speaker 1: But they've spent money.
- 39:50Speaker 2: They're not willing to spend money on starting pitching? They're
- 39:53Speaker 2: not willing to keep closing burns around?
- 39:54Speaker 1: They've spent way more money. They've spent way more money
- 39:56Speaker 1: than they used to. I wouldn't say they're cash-strapped. Now,
- 39:59Speaker 1: have they made some misses? They've made some misses in
- 40:01Speaker 1: terms of some signings. I would put it more that way.
- 40:03Speaker 1: I mean, they acquired Boz and Brad, and they extended Bradish.
- 40:07Speaker 1: They've extended Boz. I don't think, I think we have
- 40:09Speaker 1: to take them out of the, this organization is dirt
- 40:12Speaker 1: cheap category.
- 40:13Speaker 2: Okay.
- 40:13Speaker 1: Just, just to defend them for a second here. I don't,
- 40:15Speaker 1: I don't think that part's fair. Now they make some
- 40:18Speaker 1: wrong decisions.
- 40:19Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 40:19Speaker 1: Do they also, should they have been selling and not
- 40:23Speaker 1: buying at the trade deadline? Probably not, especially now when
- 40:25Speaker 1: you look and there's still just one game out of
- 40:27Speaker 1: a spot.
- 40:28Speaker 4: So they're like, just kidding. Let's buy now. Dump deadline.
- 40:30Speaker 1: Go get Luis Robert jr.
- 40:33Speaker 2: It's just, there's always, it's always going to be that
- 40:36Speaker 2: conversation with a guy like Luis Robert jr. wow, what potential?
- 40:41Speaker 2: Could this team help him tap into it? And honestly,
- 40:45Speaker 2: when you go through the type of career that he's had,
- 40:48Speaker 2: I think it's up to Luis Robert. If he wants
- 40:50Speaker 2: to be able to tap into it, whatever it is,
- 40:53Speaker 2: I don't think you just have an aberration and you
- 40:56Speaker 2: play out of your mind in the season where he
- 40:59Speaker 2: was an all-star, when he went to Seattle for the
- 41:01Speaker 2: all-star game. I think you're playing below your potential when
- 41:06Speaker 2: you don't play to that. Nobody plays better than they
- 41:09Speaker 2: are And I think, look, Luis Robert is a guy
- 41:12Speaker 2: that you could see hitting 10 homers in the month
- 41:15Speaker 2: of September and then convincing the Orioles to pick up
- 41:19Speaker 2: his probably $ 20 million option again. Like, he has that
- 41:23Speaker 2: flash and that skill. Do I think it'll happen? Most
- 41:27Speaker 2: likely not. But it could help the Orioles, and they
- 41:30Speaker 2: could make the playoffs.
- 41:32Speaker 1: It could help them on defense. And also, yeah, if
- 41:34Speaker 1: you make the playoffs, that ends up making you money.
- 41:36Speaker 1: So here's my thing. AJ, have we been big believers
- 41:40Speaker 1: in the player being worth $ 20 million for a full season?
- 41:43Speaker 1: Absolutely not. If you have an opportunity as Baltimore to
- 41:47Speaker 1: upgrade your team on offense and on defense and money
- 41:50Speaker 1: is not a factor. Sure. I'll take a flyer on
- 41:53Speaker 1: one month of Luis Robert. Do I want a full
- 41:56Speaker 1: season of Luis Robert at $ 20 million? Absolutely not. But
- 41:59Speaker 1: I give them credit, right? We often tell teams, Hey,
- 42:02Speaker 1: why aren't you caring more? Baltimore is one of them.
- 42:05Speaker 1: They sold players at the deadline. So ultimately, Even if
- 42:08Speaker 1: we're not in love with the player, is he better
- 42:09Speaker 1: than the end of their roster?
- 42:12Speaker 4: Probably.
- 42:13Speaker 2: They're trying.
- 42:15Speaker 3: I mean, they're trying. Maybe they should have tried, like
- 42:18Speaker 3: you said a little bit earlier. I mean, it also
- 42:21Speaker 3: helps that Kobe Mayo started to hit. Beavers have started
- 42:23Speaker 3: to hit. Some of their other guys have started to
- 42:24Speaker 3: hit a little bit. So that's also helped them. And again,
- 42:28Speaker 3: the American League stinks.
- 42:30Speaker 4: It stinks.
- 42:31Speaker 2: I'm sorry. The American League stinks.
- 42:35Speaker 1: Look at them though.
- 42:35Speaker 2: Baltimore.
- 42:36Speaker 1: We're looking at the standings right now. Guardians have the
- 42:38Speaker 1: third wild card. I'm just reading.
- 42:39Speaker 3: I mean, the blue Jays and the Orioles are like
- 42:43Speaker 3: hot and heavy in this. Neither one of those teams
- 42:46Speaker 3: a month ago, two months ago, we're like, man, these
- 42:49Speaker 3: are both teams that make, can make a run deep
- 42:51Speaker 3: in the post season. They both have a legitimate chance
- 42:53Speaker 3: to get into the post season. It's crazy that 69
- 42:58Speaker 3: and 68 right now is the guardians and they're, have
- 43:01Speaker 3: one game lead over the Baltimore Orioles to get into
- 43:03Speaker 3: the postseason.
- 43:05Speaker 2: It's crazy. I mean, the Red Sox and Yankees are
- 43:07Speaker 2: locked in.
- 43:09Speaker 1: The Orioles did something right this past offseason. They signed
- 43:12Speaker 1: Pete Alonzo. He has been their best player. He has
- 43:15Speaker 1: been incredible. He's one of the best players in the
- 43:17Speaker 1: league now. When you look at the offensive stats this year,
- 43:20Speaker 1: I mean, it's been like that for many years. But
- 43:22Speaker 1: the run that he's had to keep them in this thing,
- 43:24Speaker 1: they would not even be close to a wild card
- 43:27Speaker 1: spot if they didn't have Pete Alonzo. So they're trying
- 43:30Speaker 1: to take advantage of that. Gunnar Henderson is hot lately.
- 43:33Speaker 1: Maybe he finds it for the final month of the season, right?
- 43:36Speaker 1: And you get at least a sliver of what you
- 43:38Speaker 1: used to get from him. He's still a very young player,
- 43:40Speaker 1: and he battled some injuries earlier on in the season.
- 43:42Speaker 1: Christian Encarnacion-Strand does not get talked about a lot, but
- 43:45Speaker 1: he's been really good for them lately too. So suddenly
- 43:48Speaker 1: their offense is starting to click a little bit. Like
- 43:49Speaker 1: you mentioned, Mayo, Beavers. I'm looking up and down at
- 43:53Speaker 1: the lineup, AJ, and compared to most of the American League,
- 43:57Speaker 1: I'm like, this lineup can bang. Yeah.
- 44:00Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah.
- 44:01Speaker 3: I mean, Pete, Pete right now is the formula is
- 44:04Speaker 3: saying right now that Pete is raking and Pete would
- 44:08Speaker 3: have looked really good as a Met, but Pete is
- 44:09Speaker 3: now an Oriole in raking.
- 44:13Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 44:15Speaker 3: They figured something out and they're playing much, much better.
- 44:18Speaker 3: It's fun team to watch right now because they're scoring
- 44:21Speaker 3: so many runs and their pitching has been decent. I
- 44:24Speaker 3: think this is the team we thought of the Orioles
- 44:26Speaker 3: last year. And then this year, and they're kind of,
- 44:29Speaker 3: Getting it now, but is it too little too late?
- 44:31Speaker 2: We'll find out.
- 44:33Speaker 3: But I'll tell you this, if Elyse Robert comes over
- 44:35Speaker 3: and does some and you have the rest of this
- 44:36Speaker 3: lineup going and you get Braddish going and Shane Boz
- 44:39Speaker 3: going and Trevor Rodgers is the good Trevor Rodgers, this
- 44:44Speaker 3: would not be a fun team to face in the postseason.
- 44:47Speaker 2: This is a prime case, them claiming him. The fact
- 44:50Speaker 2: that Eugenio Suarez, a guy that stayed healthy, was not claimed.
- 44:54Speaker 2: I think they're making the same I have to look
- 44:58Speaker 2: it up as I'm talking here, but I think they
- 45:01Speaker 2: both had... Robert's.
- 45:03Speaker 1: Probably making more. 15 versus 20?
- 45:06Speaker 2: 15 versus 20, but still you're looking in that $ 3- 4
- 45:10Speaker 2: million range for the last month, and he's been out
- 45:15Speaker 2: on the field the whole time. The upside, the fact
- 45:18Speaker 2: that he can play defensive, he's healthy, and can hit
- 45:22Speaker 2: you a dinger, should be able to steal your bases.
- 45:24Speaker 2: For some reason, he's not running this year. Maybe that's
- 45:26Speaker 2: a mets theme who knows maybe he goes away from
- 45:30Speaker 2: the mets and has a great september and helps carry this.
- 45:33Speaker 1: Team yeah and we've seen it he can't keep himself
- 45:36Speaker 1: on the field or stay consistent and for the mets
- 45:38Speaker 1: of course they were going to place him on waivers
- 45:41Speaker 1: or they should have i mean you have ewing you
- 45:43Speaker 1: have bench so to just return this weekend see you
- 45:46Speaker 1: right and you're not a playoff team so it's certainly
- 45:50Speaker 1: not a team you have to worry about saving money
- 45:51Speaker 1: but it doesn't hurt for them it's still five million
- 45:53Speaker 1: bucks that they save that they can spend somewhere else.
- 45:56Speaker 1: So we'll see what Baltimore does, but give them credit.
- 45:59Speaker 1: This is the only option you have at this point.
- 46:02Speaker 1: You get to the end of August. There used to
- 46:04Speaker 1: be trades. I used to love them, but they took
- 46:06Speaker 1: that away from us because apparently everyone else knows more
- 46:09Speaker 1: than we do about how transactions work and what people
- 46:11Speaker 1: care about. But AJ, the dump deadline is a real thing.
- 46:14Speaker 1: It pops up every year, sometimes with multiple players and
- 46:17Speaker 1: sometimes one or two here. So John Schreiber also was
- 46:21Speaker 1: picked up the Royals reliever by the Yankees. So this
- 46:23Speaker 1: gives you the chance where just for anyone that didn't
- 46:25Speaker 1: know this to cap off the conversation, player gets put
- 46:28Speaker 1: on waivers like this. They go in reverse order of standings.
- 46:32Speaker 4: Okay.
- 46:33Speaker 1: And then a team says, sure, I'm interested. I'll take them.
- 46:36Speaker 1: And if you are, you claim him, you take on
- 46:38Speaker 1: the rest of his money.
- 46:39Speaker 4: That's it.
- 46:39Speaker 1: There's no trade. It's just a money dump. Hence the name.
- 46:43Speaker 1: Dump deadline. And Scott Coleman from our Braves Hammer Territory
- 46:46Speaker 1: show thought that the Braves should have picked him up
- 46:48Speaker 1: to give them some outfield depth and also to finally
- 46:51Speaker 1: spend some of the money they saved on jerks and pro-far.
- 46:53Speaker 1: Guess what? He didn't make it to the Braves.
- 46:56Speaker 2: No, he didn't.
- 46:58Speaker 3: The most fascinating part is whether he does well or
- 47:00Speaker 3: not is do the O's pick up his option for
- 47:02Speaker 3: next year.
- 47:03Speaker 2: That, to me, is going to be the most fascinating
- 47:05Speaker 2: part of this. You don't think?
- 47:08Speaker 1: They better not. That's a different story.
- 47:10Speaker 2: How much are they paying Tyler O'Neal? I'm all for
- 47:11Speaker 2: picking him up. How much are they paying Tyler O'Neal?
- 47:16Speaker 1: Probably close to 20 a year, right, from what I remember.
- 47:19Speaker 2: On that contract?
- 47:20Speaker 3: It's 18. If he has a good month in Baltimore,
- 47:25Speaker 3: they don't pick.
- 47:26Speaker 2: Up his option.
- 47:27Speaker 1: I don't think they should. I think there's a very
- 47:29Speaker 1: different evaluation process. Do I think they will or should?
- 47:34Speaker 1: I'm going to say no on both. I think we've
- 47:36Speaker 1: finally reached a point where teams are like, hey, a
- 47:39Speaker 1: burst of Luis Robert for a month, When I'm in
- 47:41Speaker 1: the playoff race, sure. A full season of him staying
- 47:44Speaker 1: on the field. Did you guys see that report earlier
- 47:47Speaker 1: in the season for the Mets and how much gymnastics
- 47:49Speaker 1: they were trying to do to keep him on the field?
- 47:50Speaker 1: They were like, one, two, skip a few. On Tuesdays
- 47:53Speaker 1: at 3 p.m., he can't play, but on Wednesdays at 4,
- 47:56Speaker 1: he can't. There were so many rules, and he still
- 47:58Speaker 1: was out for most of the season. No thank you
- 48:00Speaker 1: from me. If I'm Baltimore, I would say the same thing.
- 48:03Speaker 1: Thanks for the month. Maybe he has a great finish,
- 48:06Speaker 1: and he's worth less than that, but.
- 48:08Speaker 3: Maybe they can find someone to trade for him like
- 48:10Speaker 3: the White Sox did. Like the Mets.
- 48:15Speaker 2: It's crazy that you're even saying this. It's crazy that
- 48:18Speaker 2: you're even saying this, but you're not wrong. That's the
- 48:22Speaker 2: whole crux of this situation. This shouldn't be brought up
- 48:28Speaker 2: that very talented, can't stay healthy. All right. You know what?
- 48:32Speaker 2: He's going to become a free agent next year. And
- 48:34Speaker 2: that's that. But AJ bringing it up, he's not wrong.
- 48:38Speaker 2: He's not like teams can fall in love with this
- 48:40Speaker 2: and be like, there's no such thing as a one
- 48:43Speaker 2: bad one year deal.
- 48:44Speaker 1: This is true.
- 48:46Speaker 2: All right.
- 48:46Speaker 1: And there's more deals. Actually, we'll get to over the
- 48:48Speaker 1: break here. We got to step aside for a moment.
- 48:50Speaker 1: We'll swing back and we'll talk about the Red Sox
- 48:52Speaker 1: and Yankees, but also in the division, the Orioles still
- 48:55Speaker 1: alive here. With this pickup, Birdland Territory covering it. They
- 48:59Speaker 1: had a good episode wrapping up the series that they
- 49:01Speaker 1: swept over the weekend. And I'm sure there will be
- 49:03Speaker 1: another one, a big Birdland episode in the next 24
- 49:06Speaker 1: hours to cover all of this. From A to Z,
- 49:08Speaker 1: check out the show. All right, so a couple things
- 49:11Speaker 1: on the Braves while we were just talking about them.
- 49:13Speaker 1: So they lost Spencer Schwellenbach for the rest of the
- 49:16Speaker 1: season and maybe more. He's going to have surgery to
- 49:18Speaker 1: repair the same elbow fractured. suffered last year. Tommy John
- 49:21Speaker 1: surgery for Hurston Waldrop. And the Braves are not sure
- 49:25Speaker 1: about Spencer Strider if his season's done, but it probably is.
- 49:29Speaker 1: Here's Scott Coleman again from the Hammer Territory show that
- 49:33Speaker 1: we love on the FT Network. He goes, my God.
- 49:37Speaker 1: I'm kind of quoting from the story that Mark Bowman
- 49:39Speaker 1: wrote about Schwellenbach. It says in the story, Schwellenbach's bid
- 49:42Speaker 1: to pitch at some point this year officially ended earlier
- 49:44Speaker 1: this week when he was barely able to feel his
- 49:47Speaker 1: arm near the end of a bullpen session at the
- 49:48Speaker 1: Brave Spring Training Complex in Florida. And at one point,
- 49:51Speaker 1: there was a later tweet from Bowman AJ about how
- 49:53Speaker 1: Schwellenbach hopes to return. I mean, it sounds bad and
- 49:57Speaker 1: it sucks for a super young pitcher who had a
- 49:59Speaker 1: lot of success right from the jump, but then has
- 50:01Speaker 1: missed a ton of time since.
- 50:05Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't think the Braves are counting on these guys.
- 50:07Speaker 3: I don't think Waldrop or Schoenbach, they were counting on.
- 50:09Speaker 2: They were hoping. They were hopeful.
- 50:11Speaker 3: Chris Sale has been ridiculously good, obviously. Bryce Elder is better,
- 50:15Speaker 3: I think. I think sometimes Bryce Elder gets a lot
- 50:17Speaker 3: of crap, and he's been up and down, yes.
- 50:20Speaker 2: But I know this.
- 50:21Speaker 3: The Braves absolutely love that dude in the clubhouse. They
- 50:23Speaker 3: love what he stands for. You know, Smith-Schwarber's back.
- 50:30Speaker 2: Yeah, it would have been nice to get these two
- 50:31Speaker 2: guys back, but they're not. And I don't think.
- 50:33Speaker 3: One thing Walt Weiss has done a good job of,
- 50:35Speaker 3: and the Braves in total, have seen, well, if we
- 50:37Speaker 3: get these guys back, great, but if we don't, we're
- 50:39Speaker 3: okay with what we have. And I don't think they're
- 50:41Speaker 3: counting on Strider either. I mean, Strider's kind of trending
- 50:45Speaker 3: towards being one of those guys that's been hurt a lot,
- 50:47Speaker 3: and that sucks. But he was so electric when he
- 50:50Speaker 3: came up. He got hurt. He came back. He couldn't
- 50:53Speaker 3: throw the ball by anybody, and then he got hurt again.
- 50:55Speaker 3: So they're not counting on these guys. They were hopeful
- 50:58Speaker 3: they'd come back, but it sucks if you're a Braves
- 51:00Speaker 3: fan because it would have been nice, but The Braves
- 51:02Speaker 3: are doing just fine. As long as the pitching staff
- 51:04Speaker 3: is led by Chris Sale, you're going to be all right.
- 51:07Speaker 2: Absolute ace of aces. Hall of Famer. Schwellenbach's injury, man.
- 51:11Speaker 2: I don't know. I've never– couldn't even feel his arm.
- 51:14Speaker 2: I don't know if I've ever heard of that. That is–
- 51:17Speaker 2: that's concerning for me. Not just for this season, clearly,
- 51:21Speaker 2: he can't pitch, but for his career. Like, that is–
- 51:24Speaker 2: that's something I don't– I've never really heard of. So,
- 51:27Speaker 2: hopefully they can figure out what's going on.
- 51:29Speaker 6: Mm-hmm.
- 51:30Speaker 1: Hey, another transaction in the last five minutes. The Chicago
- 51:35Speaker 1: White Sox have traded for Tommy Pham from the Phillies.
- 51:40Speaker 1: You're going to get some moves in here in the
- 51:43Speaker 1: next 12 to 24 hours because then Pham will join
- 51:46Speaker 1: the team when rosters expand September 1. And this is what? Mets, O's, Phillies,
- 51:51Speaker 1: now White Sox for him this year.
- 51:54Speaker 2: Tommy Pham, another Iron Pig.
- 52:11Speaker 1: Well, Sedan Raffaella made an outstanding catch for the Red Sox.
- 52:15Speaker 1: I can say that, but yes, AJ, correct me, because
- 52:18Speaker 1: officially it is not a catch, and it ends up
- 52:22Speaker 1: costing the Red Sox runs, and then they got blown out.
- 52:24Speaker 1: But still, you never know how the game's going to result.
- 52:26Speaker 4: What?
- 52:26Speaker 1: What's wrong with all that? It doesn't matter or it does?
- 52:29Speaker 2: I was letting you finish.
- 52:33Speaker 1: I feel like as I'm talking, you're giving me the
- 52:35Speaker 1: no and then the maybe, kind of reacting to each
- 52:38Speaker 1: way that I describe the play. Let's get his reaction
- 52:41Speaker 1: first because most people were pretty pissed off, right, about
- 52:44Speaker 1: what happened here and why it goes to replay and
- 52:46Speaker 1: then replay still says it's not a catch. Maybe there's
- 52:49Speaker 1: something that we were all missing. Zidane Raffaele himself spoke postgame.
- 52:54Speaker 7: I didn't have to even watch it. I know I
- 52:56Speaker 7: made the catch. I know when a ball drop and
- 52:59Speaker 7: a ball don't drop. And I know I made the catch.
- 53:06Speaker 1: How frustrating that kind of turned the game, the fact
- 53:08Speaker 1: that that was not called correctly on the field and
- 53:10Speaker 1: they couldn't overturn it.
- 53:12Speaker 7: Yeah, like you said, they couldn't overturn it out of
- 53:16Speaker 7: our control. But I was really mad at the moment,
- 53:20Speaker 7: in the moment. I really wanted to have my pitcher there,
- 53:24Speaker 7: and I feel that changed the whole game right there.
- 53:28Speaker 4: How unusual is it for you to be that mad
- 53:30Speaker 4: about a call?
- 53:32Speaker 7: I mean, you guys haven't seen me play in a
- 53:35Speaker 7: couple years. I don't really argue that much with anybody.
- 53:39Speaker 7: I play my game hard and go home, enjoy my family.
- 53:43Speaker 4: That's what I do.
- 53:45Speaker 7: And when I feel something is not right, I'm going
- 53:50Speaker 7: to be there for my teammate. He was throwing an
- 53:55Speaker 7: unbelievable game, and that's what got me most upset.
- 53:59Speaker 1: All right, so talk me through it, AJ.
- 54:04Speaker 3: It wasn't a catch, no. Because the replay said it wasn't.
- 54:09Speaker 3: And they always get it right.
- 54:11Speaker 5: Stop.
- 54:11Speaker 2: Right? No, it was a catch.
- 54:13Speaker 4: Wait, so what happened? What the heck happened?
- 54:16Speaker 2: I don't know. It was a catch. It looked like
- 54:18Speaker 2: a catch. They said he trapped it. I don't know.
- 54:21Speaker 3: This is one of those funky rules. The only thing
- 54:23Speaker 3: I will disagree with what you said, Scott, was, I mean,
- 54:27Speaker 3: I don't know how it hits. Clearly hits his glove
- 54:29Speaker 3: first before it hits the ground.
- 54:30Speaker 2: I don't know how he didn't break his wrist. Right there.
- 54:38Speaker 3: But it's stubborn leaves his glove. So that's why I
- 54:41Speaker 3: don't know. It looks like a catch. It felt like
- 54:43Speaker 3: a catch. Uh, the only thing I'll disagree with you
- 54:45Speaker 3: on Scott is you never know. I hate when people say, well,
- 54:48Speaker 3: if this would have happened, if this would have happened,
- 54:50Speaker 3: then we would have won the game.
- 54:51Speaker 2: How do we know?
- 54:52Speaker 3: We don't know that. So you can never go back
- 54:54Speaker 3: and say, Oh, well, if that catches rule to catch,
- 54:57Speaker 3: then they don't score the 12 runs in the last inning,
- 54:59Speaker 3: the eighth inning, whatever it was.
- 55:00Speaker 2: So that's the only thing I'll disagree with. Uh, Was
- 55:05Speaker 2: it a catch? I thought it was a catch, but
- 55:07Speaker 2: it didn't become a catch. So you've got to regroup
- 55:11Speaker 2: and just get through it. They didn't do that. The
- 55:13Speaker 2: Yankees came out and smashed them in the late inning.
- 55:15Speaker 2: So I don't know. Replay is not always right. Let's
- 55:20Speaker 2: just say that. Call stands. It wasn't confirmed. Call stands.
- 55:26Speaker 2: Not a catch. How they called it not a catch in-game,
- 55:30Speaker 2: I have no idea because in-game– You can't see. You're
- 55:33Speaker 2: just assuming it's not a catch. If you were the,
- 55:36Speaker 2: I assume that's the first base umpire that has that call,
- 55:39Speaker 2: not the second base umpire. Because he, I mean, it
- 55:43Speaker 2: rolled up behind him. And then I could see on replay,
- 55:45Speaker 2: I could definitely see on replay why they would have said,
- 55:48Speaker 2: I don't know. Because right at the end when they
- 55:51Speaker 2: super slow mow it, the glove like turns down and
- 55:55Speaker 2: you see the ball is at the bottom of his glove.
- 56:00Speaker 2: I thought he caught it. but I can see how
- 56:03Speaker 2: they wouldn't overturn it.
- 56:08Speaker 4: Okay.
- 56:08Speaker 1: So it wasn't as glaring to you as it was
- 56:10Speaker 1: to most.
- 56:12Speaker 2: He definitely got his glove under it to catch it.
- 56:14Speaker 2: But when it turned, when it turned like this, you could,
- 56:18Speaker 2: you could argue. Like you will see, obviously here, no
- 56:22Speaker 2: chance you can sit there and say, unless you think
- 56:26Speaker 2: like either way, like I'm just going to be like, yeah,
- 56:28Speaker 2: you know what? He caught it. Like, unless you think
- 56:30Speaker 2: he is picking it off the ground. Here you can't tell,
- 56:32Speaker 2: but in this next slow motion, as the glove goes down,
- 56:37Speaker 2: remembering right here. To me, they could say, in football,
- 56:44Speaker 2: we see it all the time. Did the point of
- 56:46Speaker 2: the football hit the ground? Like, I don't think it's
- 56:52Speaker 2: cut and dry. It can hit the ground in football
- 56:53Speaker 2: as long as you have control over it and it's
- 56:55Speaker 2: still a catch. They've changed that rule because the other
- 56:58Speaker 2: rule was stupid. I agree. I agree.
- 57:01Speaker 3: I thought it was a catch, but I just will
- 57:03Speaker 3: say this.
- 57:04Speaker 2: I didn't think you can never say, Oh, that changed
- 57:07Speaker 2: the game. That changed the game.
- 57:08Speaker 3: Cause there's so many variables in baseball and other sports. Oh, well,
- 57:13Speaker 3: you know, if, if so-and-so would have hit a half
- 57:15Speaker 3: court three point buzzer beater at halftime, then, you know,
- 57:19Speaker 3: the Knicks wouldn't have won the NBA championship.
- 57:21Speaker 2: We don't know that.
- 57:22Speaker 3: We can never say that unless you're Dr. Strange and
- 57:25Speaker 3: you can go through time and, The multiverse? I don't
- 57:28Speaker 3: know who else would know the answer to that. Or
- 57:30Speaker 3: unless it's really defining. If it's really defining. If it's
- 57:35Speaker 3: a ball that's caught. If it ends the game.
- 57:39Speaker 2: Right, exactly. But that's the only way. Who says Ranger,
- 57:44Speaker 2: if he gets that out there, doesn't go complete game?
- 57:48Speaker 2: Stop with that. You don't know. You have to go
- 57:52Speaker 2: and play the next play. And they got mollywhopped the
- 57:54Speaker 2: rest of the game.
- 57:57Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't think anybody's going, hey, the Red Sox
- 58:00Speaker 1: won that game if they don't mess that up. I
- 58:02Speaker 1: think they're just saying you don't know how the game
- 58:04Speaker 1: is going to play out after that. I get what
- 58:06Speaker 1: you're saying. Like, you can't use that as the only
- 58:08Speaker 1: excuse for why you got crushed. It wasn't even a
- 58:11Speaker 1: close result. But I think you should be pissed off.
- 58:16Speaker 1: That's the point, right? You would be pissed off. That's
- 58:18Speaker 1: the point, AJ. If you're on the Red Sox at
- 58:21Speaker 1: that moment and they ask you postgame about it, you'd
- 58:23Speaker 1: be like, hey, what's the point of replay?
- 58:25Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 58:27Speaker 2: Agreed.
- 58:27Speaker 3: I mean, there was plenty of replays I was a
- 58:29Speaker 3: part of that I didn't understand. And after the game,
- 58:31Speaker 3: they ask you, you're like, ah, you know, that's why
- 58:34Speaker 3: we're supposed to have it. But it doesn't always get
- 58:36Speaker 3: it right. And that's the I think that's the frustrating
- 58:38Speaker 3: part for a lot of people.
- 58:40Speaker 1: Is it frustrating if someone is swiping bags when the
- 58:45Speaker 1: team is up six and you're behind the plate? Do
- 58:48Speaker 1: you care about that stuff?
- 58:49Speaker 4: Because.
- 58:51Speaker 1: Red Sox broadcaster Will Fleming from WEEI cared. The play-by-play
- 58:55Speaker 1: guy there. We'll get into his comments. We'll run them
- 58:57Speaker 1: in a second. But A.J. Jazz Chisholm doing his thing.
- 59:01Speaker 1: Does that bother you at all?
- 59:06Speaker 2: In today's game, nothing is off limits. There are no
- 59:09Speaker 2: unwritten rules.
- 59:10Speaker 3: We've talked about this many times on this show. It
- 59:12Speaker 3: used to be if you were up six runs in
- 59:14Speaker 3: the eighth inning and they weren't really holding you on
- 59:17Speaker 3: and you did this, somebody was going to get drilled,
- 59:19Speaker 3: whether it was you or the hitter hitting or whoever,
- 59:22Speaker 3: somebody was going to get hit. But we've gotten to
- 59:24Speaker 3: the point as a sport where we've taken away all
- 59:26Speaker 3: of that. So you can kind of do whatever you want.
- 59:29Speaker 3: And Jazz just playing the game. And, you know, do
- 59:32Speaker 3: I think that Will Fleming should have said what he
- 59:34Speaker 3: said about him? No, because I think that you should
- 59:37Speaker 3: never get personal as an announcer. And that's one of
- 59:40Speaker 3: the hardest things. And Will Fleming apologized and said he
- 59:43Speaker 3: was a fan. And I understand that. But one of
- 59:45Speaker 3: the first things you're taught as an announcer, you should
- 59:47Speaker 3: never give anything personal. Just talk about what's happening on
- 59:49Speaker 3: the field, no matter how big of a fan you are.
- 59:53Speaker 3: And listen, Jazz did this.
- 59:55Speaker 2: Sure. Was he padding his stats? Absolutely. Absolutely.
- 59:58Speaker 3: But at the same time, nobody cares because bat flips
- 1:00:02Speaker 3: and all this stuff is now fine.
- 1:00:05Speaker 2: You can't care about one little thing if you don't
- 1:00:07Speaker 2: care about everything.
- 1:00:09Speaker 1: Well, let's get the line from him during the game.
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: Here's the sound from Will Fleming during the Red Sox
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: broadcast calling for retaliation.
- 1:00:17Speaker 2: Look, you're up six.
- 1:00:19Speaker 6: It's the eighth.
- 1:00:20Speaker 8: The team is electing not to hold you on. That's
- 1:00:23Speaker 8: the white flag, right? And normally in that situation, you
- 1:00:26Speaker 8: don't run.
- 1:00:27Speaker 2: You don't run.
- 1:00:29Speaker 6: Wouldn't you sort of like to see moran drill wells
- 1:00:32Speaker 6: right here infield's coming in.
- 1:00:34Speaker 8: It's just that's selfish play right that's just padding your
- 1:00:38Speaker 8: stats well he's a bush but guess what i mean.
- 1:00:40Speaker 6: It's not even a steal here's the pitch and it's
- 1:00:43Speaker 6: swung on a miss i think that's indifference don't you yeah.
- 1:00:45Speaker 8: It's just you know that one of the unwritten rules
- 1:00:47Speaker 8: like if we're holding you on sure if you get
- 1:00:49Speaker 8: a jump go but if i'm gonna play behind you
- 1:00:52Speaker 8: at first base that's us just saying you just play
- 1:00:55Speaker 8: the game right and and Normally you don't see guys
- 1:00:58Speaker 8: steal in that situation up six late in the game.
- 1:01:00Speaker 6: Well, that's who Jazz is. I don't know what else
- 1:01:03Speaker 6: you need to hear. The 3-2 is drilled into right field.
- 1:01:05Speaker 6: It is way back in.
- 1:01:07Speaker 4: It is gone.
- 1:01:08Speaker 2: And Marant should fight Chisholm. He's walking towards the third
- 1:01:11Speaker 2: base line, staring at him there. Chisholm trots home. It's
- 1:01:16Speaker 2: a two-run homer, and it's 9-1.
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: Well, and then we have the apology from Will Fleming. Yeah,
- 1:01:23Speaker 1: he was going for it. And he was receiving threats
- 1:01:26Speaker 1: over the last, whatever, 24 hours. He said, since I've
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: been receiving nonstop calls and threats, I felt like it
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: was important to hop back on here and say, my
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: comments during yesterday's broadcast crossed the line. I'm emotional and
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: a fan at heart. And that bled into the broadcast. Kratz,
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: your thoughts on if you heard this on the radio?
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: From any perspective, player perspective, organization, fan, right? Fan not
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: of the Red Sox.
- 1:01:52Speaker 2: I mean... the he should fight him part, like, I
- 1:01:55Speaker 2: didn't hear that part until just now. I think the
- 1:01:58Speaker 2: emotions were definitely shining through there, and I was trying
- 1:02:02Speaker 2: to look up to see if he got two stolen
- 1:02:04Speaker 2: bases for that yesterday. I didn't get it looked up,
- 1:02:09Speaker 2: so if somebody can look that up, I think it
- 1:02:11Speaker 2: could be defensive indifference. I've also heard of the whole,
- 1:02:15Speaker 2: you know what, you're going to play behind the runner
- 1:02:18Speaker 2: and I got a lefty up, you're taking a hit
- 1:02:21Speaker 2: away from my teammate, so I'm going to steal second
- 1:02:24Speaker 2: to get him an RBI. I've heard all sides of it.
- 1:02:28Speaker 2: My biggest thing is exactly what AJ said. You stand
- 1:02:32Speaker 2: for something as a team. If you feel like he's
- 1:02:35Speaker 2: disrespected you, then you have to take care of that,
- 1:02:38Speaker 2: or he's broken the rules, then you have to take
- 1:02:40Speaker 2: care of that. I think for the radio guys, maybe
- 1:02:44Speaker 2: it's a little too much, but you can tell that
- 1:02:47Speaker 2: that Red Sox, Yankees... Rivalry is still alive in the
- 1:02:52Speaker 2: radio booth. I mean, calling him a Bush League player,
- 1:02:56Speaker 2: saying he should fight him, like, it towed the line,
- 1:03:01Speaker 2: but good for Will for coming out and actually crossed
- 1:03:05Speaker 2: the line. Good for him for him coming out and
- 1:03:08Speaker 2: apologizing that he got too emotional. So, you know what? Everything's,
- 1:03:12Speaker 2: I don't think Jazz is giving him any interviews and
- 1:03:14Speaker 2: I don't think they're looking for any interviews from Jazz.
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: He's a free agent after this year. Maybe he'll sign
- 1:03:21Speaker 1: with the Red Sox. They can talk about him all
- 1:03:23Speaker 1: the time at that point. So he's at 40 stolen bases.
- 1:03:25Speaker 1: He's got two on that one.
- 1:03:28Speaker 2: He knows the number. He knows the number. He knows
- 1:03:32Speaker 2: he said he wanted to go 50-50, and 50's in reach.
- 1:03:35Speaker 2: And if those are two bags for him, I don't
- 1:03:38Speaker 2: know if he got one earlier in the year, and
- 1:03:39Speaker 2: so just second was a bag. But you know what?
- 1:03:44Speaker 2: Everybody's played with guys who go after their numbers.
- 1:03:47Speaker 4: He's a free agent here.
- 1:03:48Speaker 6: 50-50.
- 1:03:48Speaker 1: 50 hits and 50 stolen bases.
- 1:03:51Speaker 4: Not always.
- 1:03:51Speaker 2: 50-50 is not happening, but he knows how much he
- 1:03:54Speaker 2: needs to get to his milestone goal.
- 1:04:00Speaker 3: By the way, the Rays used to be the king
- 1:04:02Speaker 3: of this, stealing third, up huge. I remember when I
- 1:04:05Speaker 3: was with the Red Sox and we had the benches
- 1:04:07Speaker 3: clear because I don't know, I forget who it was.
- 1:04:09Speaker 3: Someone stole third and our bench was like, they were
- 1:04:12Speaker 3: up big and our bench was like, oh, that's the
- 1:04:13Speaker 3: only way you can steal third.
- 1:04:14Speaker 2: I forget. And then, you know, the.
- 1:04:16Speaker 3: Benches cleared because It was just handled differently then. People
- 1:04:20Speaker 3: would say something. Now it's just become, again, I'll say
- 1:04:23Speaker 3: it again.
- 1:04:24Speaker 2: You do whatever you want.
- 1:04:26Speaker 3: Nobody can say anything because we let the kids play.
- 1:04:29Speaker 3: You can't have emotions and say, hey, we're going to
- 1:04:34Speaker 3: judge this, but we're not going to judge the 100
- 1:04:36Speaker 3: other things people have done. So that's why I don't
- 1:04:39Speaker 3: think it was as big of a deal as Will
- 1:04:40Speaker 3: Fleming made it out to be. He was mad they
- 1:04:43Speaker 3: had lost three or four in the series. They were
- 1:04:44Speaker 3: getting crushed, and he just– He's a better broadcaster than this,
- 1:04:49Speaker 3: I feel like, and he apologized, so good for you, Will,
- 1:04:52Speaker 3: for apologizing, and now we can move on.
- 1:04:56Speaker 2: There you go.
- 1:04:57Speaker 1: Yeah, the threats, I mean, sure, should he have gone
- 1:05:00Speaker 1: as far as the fighting?
- 1:05:03Speaker 4: No.
- 1:05:04Speaker 2: I think he knows that now that he listened back
- 1:05:06Speaker 2: to it. He knows, yeah.
- 1:05:07Speaker 1: You call in a lot of games, hours of baseball,
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: people make mistakes. Is it the worst thing that's ever
- 1:05:12Speaker 1: been said?
- 1:05:13Speaker 8: No.
- 1:05:14Speaker 1: Let's relax, but... Yes, I think lesson learned on all
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: parties here. And the last thing I'll say on this
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: is sometimes there's a fine line when you're a team
- 1:05:24Speaker 1: broadcaster on which way you want to spin. Some team broadcasters,
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: for the most part, will just deliver the goods and
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: some get pretty opinionated and fan oriented. I mean, AJ,
- 1:05:37Speaker 1: you lived that for a long time. Hawk Harrelson was
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: the definition of that when you were playing. Hawk was
- 1:05:42Speaker 1: living and dying with every moment. It felt like you
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: were watching the game with a fan sitting next to you.
- 1:05:47Speaker 1: And that was the Hawk Harrelson experience. If you listen
- 1:05:50Speaker 1: to a Mets game and they're a well-respected broadcast, they
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: do a great job. It's much different. It has almost
- 1:05:54Speaker 1: at times a national feel to it in the way
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: that they will criticize their own team and just tell
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: it like it is from a different perspective. I like
- 1:06:01Speaker 1: both perspectives, but I'm just pointing that out. That is
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: part of the equation here, right? Will became a fan
- 1:06:07Speaker 1: during that moment.
- 1:06:09Speaker 2: It happens.
- 1:06:10Speaker 3: And listen, every fan will tell you they want their
- 1:06:12Speaker 3: home broadcast. And I'm a big– and I believe this.
- 1:06:15Speaker 3: You've got to be a homer to some extent if
- 1:06:17Speaker 3: you're the home broadcaster because you're with these guys every day.
- 1:06:20Speaker 2: And you're told you're hired by the team. The team
- 1:06:24Speaker 2: hires you.
- 1:06:25Speaker 3: And they will never admit this, but the team doesn't
- 1:06:27Speaker 3: tell them what to say, but the team gives them
- 1:06:29Speaker 3: ideas what to say.
- 1:06:31Speaker 2: Okay?
- 1:06:32Speaker 3: Meaning we need you to push a certain thing and
- 1:06:35Speaker 3: make A or B sound good when– It might not
- 1:06:39Speaker 3: be that good because people are starting to clamor about it.
- 1:06:41Speaker 3: So I think being a fan of your team that
- 1:06:44Speaker 3: you work for is a good thing. It's not a
- 1:06:46Speaker 3: bad thing. But you just can't let it bleed into
- 1:06:50Speaker 3: where you're taking, I don't want to say a shot
- 1:06:53Speaker 3: at another guy, but you can't use it to where
- 1:06:55Speaker 3: you get a little personal with a guy on another
- 1:06:57Speaker 3: team or even your own team.
- 1:07:01Speaker 2: I just showed my kids. People who don't know who
- 1:07:04Speaker 2: Hulk Harrelson is, just go find any highlight. I showed
- 1:07:07Speaker 2: my kids the fight we had with the Royals between...
- 1:07:12Speaker 2: It started with Jordano Ventura and Eaton. And at the
- 1:07:17Speaker 2: end of it, I mean, Hulk Harrelson was like, you're
- 1:07:20Speaker 2: going to get his butt whooped. And it was... My
- 1:07:23Speaker 2: kids were like... was that the guy that says put
- 1:07:27Speaker 2: on the board? Yes. And I was like, yes, it is. Yes.
- 1:07:30Speaker 1: Yes.
- 1:07:30Speaker 2: That is, that was Hawk. But I mean, you, you
- 1:07:34Speaker 2: feel that emotion again, goes a little too far in
- 1:07:38Speaker 2: the Red Sox.
- 1:07:39Speaker 1: All right. Good talk before the television crowd comes back.
- 1:07:45Speaker 1: Did you guys see this little fun that the giants
- 1:07:47Speaker 1: had and what they're experiencing? Ron Wotus, who's been in
- 1:07:50Speaker 1: the game for a long time. Um, was booted when
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: he gave the lineup card. Alan Porter was like, I
- 1:07:56Speaker 1: don't want to hear it, even though Porter had a
- 1:07:58Speaker 1: rough game the day before. This actually seems more deep-rooted, AJ,
- 1:08:03Speaker 1: in the fact that the Giants feel as if Tony
- 1:08:06Speaker 1: Vitello is getting a quick hook from umpires, and I
- 1:08:09Speaker 1: actually think they have a point here.
- 1:08:12Speaker 3: Ron Modis 100% took the lineup card out to get ejected.
- 1:08:16Speaker 3: He had been there a long time. He has been
- 1:08:18Speaker 3: the third base coach, the bench coach, since I was
- 1:08:20Speaker 3: there in 2004. He's been a coach for the Giants.
- 1:08:23Speaker 3: You know what he did? He said, Tony, I got
- 1:08:25Speaker 3: this today. I'm going to take care of this. And
- 1:08:27Speaker 3: he went out there and took care of business. I
- 1:08:28Speaker 3: got nothing but respect for Wotus fellow Polak, by the way,
- 1:08:31Speaker 3: might be the bench coach one day of team Poland
- 1:08:33Speaker 3: with me. But yeah, he went out there a hundred
- 1:08:36Speaker 3: percent and just said, look, Tony, you were, I didn't
- 1:08:39Speaker 3: feel like what happened yesterday was fair to you. You
- 1:08:41Speaker 3: can't go out there and get ejected today. I'm going
- 1:08:43Speaker 3: to handle this for you. And that's what being a
- 1:08:46Speaker 3: good teammate and being a coach and respecting the guy
- 1:08:49Speaker 3: who's in charge. That's what it's all about now. The
- 1:08:51Speaker 3: best part is the guy standing there with his hands
- 1:08:53Speaker 3: in his pocket listening to this. Like, I'm just here
- 1:08:56Speaker 3: for the picture, guys. I'm just here for the picture.
- 1:09:00Speaker 1: Honorary fan. I think the lineup card exchange got his
- 1:09:03Speaker 1: money's worth, Kratz.
- 1:09:06Speaker 2: Alan Porter is giving it to him. The guy's back
- 1:09:09Speaker 2: there in his Willie Mays jersey, hands in his pocket.
- 1:09:13Speaker 2: Even the Marlins fan– Coach that's out there with the
- 1:09:19Speaker 2: lineup card. I think it was the Marlins. Like, he's
- 1:09:22Speaker 2: standing there like, I kind of want to hear this.
- 1:09:25Speaker 2: You know what? He got after it. And good if
- 1:09:27Speaker 2: he's sticking up for his manager. You know what? Maybe
- 1:09:30Speaker 2: they feel he's being disrespected. They have a choice. You
- 1:09:34Speaker 2: can also disrespect him or, okay, it was the Diamondbacks.
- 1:09:37Speaker 2: Or you can feel like you got to stick up
- 1:09:39Speaker 2: for him. So good for Wotus.
- 1:09:44Speaker 1: There were some pretty bad misses over the weekend, but AJ,
- 1:09:47Speaker 1: it's fair to say that the misses can be corrected
- 1:09:50Speaker 1: these days. If an ump has a terrible game, then
- 1:09:53Speaker 1: you tap your head.
- 1:09:55Speaker 3: An ump can't have a terrible game. If you think
- 1:09:57Speaker 3: he keeps missing, keep tapping your helmet because you just
- 1:10:00Speaker 3: get another. I was at the Yankee game on Saturday,
- 1:10:02Speaker 3: the first game, and I was there for about the
- 1:10:04Speaker 3: last four innings, and those four innings, I saw about
- 1:10:06Speaker 3: eight of these, and they just kept doing it, and
- 1:10:08Speaker 3: they kept doing it, and they kept doing it, and
- 1:10:10Speaker 3: they kept doing it because they were right, and the
- 1:10:12Speaker 3: umpire kept turning around and and saying, oh, another challenge
- 1:10:16Speaker 3: by the catcher, another challenge.
- 1:10:17Speaker 2: By the hitter.
- 1:10:17Speaker 3: Oh, they're overturned. Okay, they get another challenge. It's real simple.
- 1:10:22Speaker 3: That's why they invented the old head tap.
- 1:10:24Speaker 5: Mm-hmm.
- 1:10:25Speaker 1: It's working.
- 1:10:26Speaker 2: Yep.
- 1:10:37Speaker 1: Little League World Series coverage presented by New York Life,
- 1:10:39Speaker 1: the official financial guidance partner. of Major League Baseball and
- 1:10:43Speaker 1: Little League Baseball, I should say. Let's get to Curacao
- 1:10:48Speaker 1: winning the Little League World Series title for the second
- 1:10:51Speaker 1: time ever. Super cool for this nation. And AJ, we
- 1:10:55Speaker 1: always make sure we remind everyone during the World Baseball
- 1:10:58Speaker 1: Classic what Team Netherlands looks like because it features usually
- 1:11:02Speaker 1: a very powerful small island, and that is Curacao.
- 1:11:06Speaker 3: Yeah, Curacao, Jerks and Profar. I mean, there's a long list.
- 1:11:10Speaker 3: Jerks and Profar. Andrelton Simmons, Andrew Jones. There's a whole
- 1:11:15Speaker 3: list of major leaguers that have come from Curacao.
- 1:11:18Speaker 2: Kenley Jansen, right? He's Curacao. He's from Curacao, isn't he?
- 1:11:22Speaker 2: Jonathan Scope.
- 1:11:23Speaker 3: Yeah, there's a whole list of guys that are from
- 1:11:25Speaker 3: Curacao that have had nice big league careers. And Curacao
- 1:11:28Speaker 3: has been a power ever since they've gotten into Little
- 1:11:30Speaker 3: League Baseball. And if you remember, it kind of started
- 1:11:33Speaker 3: with the Scope team getting to Williamsport and being a factor.
- 1:11:37Speaker 3: So congratulations to Curacao. Curacao is a really cool place
- 1:11:40Speaker 3: if you've never been Super happy people. But, yeah, congratulations
- 1:11:45Speaker 3: to them. Congratulations to the team from Nevada that came
- 1:11:49Speaker 3: up short. I know I just– the one thing about
- 1:11:51Speaker 3: Little League baseball, win or lose, someone's going to be crying,
- 1:11:53Speaker 3: and you feel so good for the team they want,
- 1:11:55Speaker 3: and you feel so bad for the team that loses.
- 1:11:59Speaker 2: That's so true. That's so true. So the timeline for
- 1:12:02Speaker 2: me for Kira Sal, congratulations. 2005, my hitting coach was
- 1:12:06Speaker 2: Bam Bam Mullins. Maybe one of the godfathers of– Literally,
- 1:12:12Speaker 2: of the island of Curacao baseball. He still runs camps
- 1:12:16Speaker 2: down there that he invites me to almost every year.
- 1:12:20Speaker 2: And he said, that was 2005. They won it in 2004.
- 1:12:24Speaker 2: And he said, honestly, the next class might even be
- 1:12:28Speaker 2: a little bit better after them with Xander Bogarts and
- 1:12:31Speaker 2: Ozzy Albies. So on that team, they had three big
- 1:12:35Speaker 2: leaguers that won it. So then you look ahead, and
- 1:12:37Speaker 2: now those guys are 33-34. And they've had big league
- 1:12:42Speaker 2: careers that all these little leaguers have looked up to.
- 1:12:45Speaker 2: So for a small island that has incredible little league success,
- 1:12:51Speaker 2: it's grown the game so much. And this is why
- 1:12:54Speaker 2: I think little leagues to the next level, to minor
- 1:12:58Speaker 2: league baseball, the more we can have things like this,
- 1:13:01Speaker 2: teams like this, tournaments like this, it grows the game
- 1:13:06Speaker 2: in that area, and that area just happens to be
- 1:13:09Speaker 2: a tiny little island near Venezuela.
- 1:13:12Speaker 1: Yeah, a baseball-crazed island. They love it there. And yeah,
- 1:13:16Speaker 1: the quotes from the Curacao coaching staff about how you
- 1:13:20Speaker 1: saw many young American fans buying Curacao gear and then
- 1:13:24Speaker 1: getting it signed by the Curacao players was a really
- 1:13:28Speaker 1: cool sign of not only the popularity of the team,
- 1:13:31Speaker 1: but also the respect level for what they were doing.
- 1:13:33Speaker 1: So I love that part.
- 1:13:36Speaker 4: Very cool.
- 1:13:38Speaker 2: Absolutely. It's what Little League Baseball is all about.
- 1:13:41Speaker 3: It's people from all over the world coming together to
- 1:13:44Speaker 3: play the game of baseball and have fun at it. Again,
- 1:13:47Speaker 3: one team's upset they lost, but at the end of
- 1:13:50Speaker 3: the day, they look back, they're 12 years old, the
- 1:13:53Speaker 3: Nevada team is still the American champions. They can still
- 1:13:56Speaker 3: go back to Las Vegas or wherever they're from in Nevada,
- 1:13:59Speaker 3: hold their heads up high and say, hey, we finished second.
- 1:14:01Speaker 2: In the world.
- 1:14:02Speaker 3: That's pretty cool. Pretty cool for Little League group of kids.
- 1:14:05Speaker 3: It's not like a travel team where they're all recruited
- 1:14:07Speaker 3: to go play. This is usually a team from a
- 1:14:10Speaker 3: certain area that comes together and they have a special run.
- 1:14:13Speaker 2: It's pretty amazing. I think it's cool, too, that especially
- 1:14:16Speaker 2: in a day and age. Now, this is on ESPN.
- 1:14:18Speaker 2: This is a major, huge tournament. They're getting a lot
- 1:14:21Speaker 2: of popularity. Tons of people show up. I think it's
- 1:14:25Speaker 2: cool that Japan cares enough that they're winning the third place.
- 1:14:31Speaker 2: They're winning third place. They're juiced about it. Think about
- 1:14:36Speaker 2: how many times now in college football, in different sports, well,
- 1:14:40Speaker 2: if we're not going to win the whole thing. Even
- 1:14:43Speaker 2: the Cubs, they said it. Well, you know, if we
- 1:14:45Speaker 2: don't have a bye, we're not going to make any
- 1:14:47Speaker 2: big trades. Like, it's really not that worth it. Japan
- 1:14:50Speaker 2: was super juiced about this. So, like, they just need
- 1:14:53Speaker 2: to continue this, continue to grow it even more because
- 1:14:58Speaker 2: it's the purest form of our sport.
- 1:15:02Speaker 1: I'll give you the most recent example. Would the Blue
- 1:15:05Speaker 1: Jays have loved to win the World Series?
- 1:15:07Speaker 4: Yes.
- 1:15:07Speaker 1: But ask most fans in Canada about their baseball experience
- 1:15:11Speaker 1: in 2025, and they will have a lot of things
- 1:15:14Speaker 1: to tell you.
- 1:15:15Speaker 4: Yep.
- 1:15:16Speaker 1: Magical.
- 1:15:16Speaker 4: Agreed.
- 1:15:17Speaker 1: Hey, New York Life knows the importance of celebrating milestones.
- 1:15:20Speaker 1: They are giving you the opportunity to commemorate your first
- 1:15:23Speaker 1: MLB game with a special lineup card certificate. You can
- 1:15:25Speaker 1: also enter to win a trip for two to a
- 1:15:27Speaker 1: 2026 World Series game And then winners get access to
- 1:15:30Speaker 1: the field before the game for batting practice, round-trip flight,
- 1:15:33Speaker 1: and hotel accommodations are included. For official rules and complete details,
- 1:15:39Speaker 1: go to mlb.com slash myfirstgamesweeps for more information. The notes
- 1:15:46Speaker 1: from Bob Nightingale this weekend included him saying, AJ Hinch
- 1:15:51Speaker 1: is still beloved in the Astros organization, has a strong
- 1:15:54Speaker 1: relationship with Jim Crane, but no interest in filling their
- 1:15:57Speaker 1: GM vacancy. Remember, Hinch used to work in a front office.
- 1:16:01Speaker 1: Why are you guys looking at me weird? He used
- 1:16:02Speaker 1: to work in a front office back in the day
- 1:16:04Speaker 1: with the Diamondbacks.
- 1:16:05Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:16:07Speaker 1: He's a smart guy. He can work in a front office.
- 1:16:09Speaker 2: I'm looking at you weird because Jim Crane didn't get
- 1:16:12Speaker 2: in trouble at all for the scheme, for the trash
- 1:16:16Speaker 2: can scam.
- 1:16:17Speaker 4: Yeah, he did.
- 1:16:18Speaker 2: I mean, he got fined. AJ had to lose his job.
- 1:16:23Speaker 2: You think he wants to go back to that organization?
- 1:16:25Speaker 2: I don't think there's ever a... I don't think there's
- 1:16:28Speaker 2: ever a reunion back there.
- 1:16:31Speaker 1: And the Astros, according to Bob, are expected to hire
- 1:16:33Speaker 1: a GM with a strong analytics background. That would be
- 1:16:36Speaker 1: the first time any team has done that, probably. Former
- 1:16:40Speaker 1: Astros GM James Click, VP of Baseball Strategy with the
- 1:16:43Speaker 1: Blue Jays since 2023, has emerged as a serious candidate for,
- 1:16:47Speaker 1: not the Astros, because he was there, won a World Series,
- 1:16:49Speaker 1: and that wasn't good enough, but for the A's GM opening.
- 1:16:55Speaker 4: I like it.
- 1:16:57Speaker 2: Can he pitch?
- 1:17:01Speaker 1: He can pitch to free agents that things will be different.
- 1:17:06Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 1:17:07Speaker 1: Maybe he goes in there and has enough juice based
- 1:17:10Speaker 1: on his track record to tell John Fisher that he
- 1:17:12Speaker 1: needs to invest in his baseball operations department. There's no
- 1:17:18Speaker 1: one there. Not no one there. There are not enough
- 1:17:20Speaker 1: people there compared to most of the rest of the league.
- 1:17:23Speaker 1: The team that was... front focused on their front office
- 1:17:27Speaker 1: is now drastically behind. And that is a fact. So
- 1:17:31Speaker 1: maybe James click helps to build it.
- 1:17:32Speaker 3: Back up and make another movie. Maybe they can make
- 1:17:34Speaker 3: another terrible movie about them. How they do not as
- 1:17:37Speaker 3: much money.
- 1:17:38Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:17:39Speaker 3: Money ball too. We don't have as much money ball too.
- 1:17:43Speaker 3: And first movie sucked. This one's going to suck more.
- 1:17:47Speaker 2: You can't even say it sucked. You didn't watch it.
- 1:17:50Speaker 2: I've watched it. I lived it. I did watch it.
- 1:17:51Speaker 2: I've watched it numerous times. Everyone's like, that's my favorite
- 1:17:54Speaker 2: baseball movie. I'm like, why? Because I'm in it? I
- 1:17:58Speaker 2: thought this whole time you said you would never watch it.
- 1:18:00Speaker 2: Or did you say you would never read the book?
- 1:18:02Speaker 2: I've never watched Sandlot.
- 1:18:05Speaker 1: Yeah, you're confusing your famous movies. But Moneyball.
- 1:18:08Speaker 2: Moneyball's not that great of a movie, but.
- 1:18:11Speaker 1: Moneyball. We had Mulder, Zito, and Hudson.
- 1:18:14Speaker 5: The end.
- 1:18:15Speaker 2: And Tejada. And Chavez.
- 1:18:18Speaker 4: They weren't mentioned.
- 1:18:19Speaker 2: Doesn't count.
- 1:18:20Speaker 5: All right.
- 1:18:34Speaker 1: Let's run through a lot to get to in the
- 1:18:35Speaker 1: next few minutes here with slap. Let's start with the
- 1:18:39Speaker 1: Cardinals placing JJ Weatherholtz on the injured list. Right wrist tendonitis.
- 1:18:43Speaker 1: This affects the rookie of the year race too. Is
- 1:18:45Speaker 1: Sal Stewart the rookie of the year?
- 1:18:47Speaker 4: Yes.
- 1:18:47Speaker 1: 30 hundo.
- 1:18:49Speaker 2: Yes.
- 1:18:49Speaker 4: I don't care.
- 1:18:49Speaker 1: What the war says. 30 hundo.
- 1:18:51Speaker 4: Rookie.
- 1:18:52Speaker 2: That's tough to look past. I don't care about war
- 1:18:55Speaker 2: in that case. 30 and 100.
- 1:18:56Speaker 4: Yes. Okay, good.
- 1:18:58Speaker 5: Thank you.
- 1:18:59Speaker 1: Twins placing Byron Buxton on the aisle. It's that same
- 1:19:02Speaker 1: right hip impingement that's burning him. Walker Jenkins got called
- 1:19:05Speaker 1: up this weekend, which is awesome. But this is a tough...
- 1:19:09Speaker 1: little stretch for Buxton after a hot start.
- 1:19:13Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:19:13Speaker 3: By the way, let me go back to, can we
- 1:19:14Speaker 3: go back to the national league rookie of the year?
- 1:19:16Speaker 3: I mean, I understand that JJ Weatherholtz because everyone looks
- 1:19:20Speaker 3: at war. His war is so much better than Sal Stewart,
- 1:19:22Speaker 3: but if you're a rookie and you have 30 and
- 1:19:24Speaker 3: you're going to lead the league in RBIs, you should,
- 1:19:26Speaker 3: it shouldn't even be a, like there shouldn't even.
- 1:19:28Speaker 2: Be a doubt about this. I'm sorry.
- 1:19:31Speaker 3: I was with Adam Wainwright this weekend and even he
- 1:19:33Speaker 3: was like 30 and a hundred is hard to overlook.
- 1:19:35Speaker 3: And he's a Cardinal Homer, like nobody's business. If you have,
- 1:19:38Speaker 3: He might end up with 40 and 120, and we're
- 1:19:41Speaker 3: going to say, because J.J. Weatherholt plays a great defense,
- 1:19:44Speaker 3: he's better, and I think he's hitting in the 240s. Sorry,
- 1:19:47Speaker 3: this should not even be close.
- 1:19:50Speaker 2: It's okay to say that J.J. Weatherholt's had a great year. Like,
- 1:19:54Speaker 2: it's totally fine. If he goes 35, let's just say
- 1:19:58Speaker 2: he has a down month, and he goes 35 and 115.
- 1:19:59Speaker 2: As a rookie, come on. Sorry, it's... I think it's
- 1:20:07Speaker 2: Sal Stewart's.
- 1:20:08Speaker 1: All right, two more things. One, Michael Kay, who had
- 1:20:14Speaker 1: to do this show today without a water. If you
- 1:20:17Speaker 1: want to know about the joke, you can watch the
- 1:20:19Speaker 1: top of the show.
- 1:20:20Speaker 2: I can't believe he made it through without anything to drink.
- 1:20:24Speaker 1: Apart from Michael Kay was able to report that the
- 1:20:29Speaker 1: Yankees told Jazz Chisholm to steal water. those bases that
- 1:20:33Speaker 1: we were referring to when they were up six runs
- 1:20:35Speaker 1: because they did not want to have to use David
- 1:20:37Speaker 1: Bednar in the ninth inning. I don't know if I
- 1:20:40Speaker 1: need to go through the whole quote, but he said,
- 1:20:42Speaker 1: jazz walks to start the eighth as he's running to
- 1:20:44Speaker 1: first to Boone shuts jazz down, says he's not allowed
- 1:20:48Speaker 1: to steal. Then sees the Red Sox infield playing behind jazz.
- 1:20:51Speaker 1: So he tells the Red Sox dugout. No, you can't
- 1:20:53Speaker 1: have it both ways. You either hold them on and
- 1:20:55Speaker 1: we won't run. Or if you're not going to hold
- 1:20:57Speaker 1: them on, we're going to run.
- 1:21:00Speaker 4: Good with that. Yeah.
- 1:21:02Speaker 2: It's like somebody said that. It's like somebody said that
- 1:21:04Speaker 2: a few minutes ago on the show. Hmm.
- 1:21:07Speaker 1: Good with that, AJ?
- 1:21:10Speaker 2: It's his explanation.
- 1:21:11Speaker 3: Yeah, that's fine. That's, that's sure. Like I said, there
- 1:21:14Speaker 3: are no rules anymore. You do whatever you want kids.
- 1:21:17Speaker 3: Like there literally are no rules in baseball anymore.
- 1:21:19Speaker 2: There's no unwritten rules.
- 1:21:20Speaker 3: There's no written rules except for just don't touch any
- 1:21:23Speaker 3: player at second base or home plate.
- 1:21:24Speaker 2: That's it. Other than that, you can kind of do
- 1:21:27Speaker 2: whatever you want.
- 1:21:29Speaker 1: No contact. Even if you're mad at someone, you can
- 1:21:33Speaker 1: yell at them, but you better make sure somebody's holding
- 1:21:36Speaker 1: you back. No contact.
- 1:21:38Speaker 2: True. Bark. We're going to call it barking. Just barking.
- 1:21:43Speaker 1: Let's finish with this on the topic of no rules.
- 1:21:46Speaker 1: If you really want no rules, look at uniforms in
- 1:21:49Speaker 1: the minor leagues these days. That's Abner Uribe. They're like, hey, Abner,
- 1:21:55Speaker 1: you're on your rehab assignment. Here's your uniform tonight.
- 1:21:59Speaker 2: Hey, they went over, they went overboard on that. They
- 1:22:01Speaker 2: had the pants too. Like normally you just get a
- 1:22:03Speaker 2: Bobo minor league top that they like auction off post game.
- 1:22:09Speaker 2: It's the Santa in July or Christmas in July top.
- 1:22:12Speaker 2: You get the steak and eggs. They got pants too.
- 1:22:15Speaker 2: Good for you Abner Uribe for wearing those and not
- 1:22:19Speaker 2: cutting them up.
- 1:22:20Speaker 1: AJ on your rehab assignment, if you were given that
- 1:22:22Speaker 1: uniform for the brats, would you have been happy?
- 1:22:27Speaker 2: Yeah, why not? What is it, A-ball? Let's rock that thing.
- 1:22:31Speaker 2: And you know what? Rock that thing strong, too. Why not?
- 1:22:35Speaker 2: I wanted to buy my tuxedo jersey the one time
- 1:22:38Speaker 2: we wore them, but they said no players are allowed
- 1:22:42Speaker 2: to participate in the raffle. It wasn't a fundraiser. It
- 1:22:46Speaker 2: was a fundraiser for the raffle, so you could only
- 1:22:48Speaker 2: win it through the raffle. The tuxedo jersey? That, John,
- 1:22:52Speaker 2: was so nice. You look like a penguin.
- 1:22:54Speaker 1: Now we know what to get you for your birthday.
- 1:22:57Speaker 2: Tuxedo shirt.
- 1:22:59Speaker 1: Yeah uh dodgers territory is live already if you want
- 1:23:03Speaker 1: to hear more about otani to pitch or not pitch
- 1:23:06Speaker 1: or bullpen or not bullpen and all that fun we're
- 1:23:09Speaker 1: gonna have talking about him over the next month leading
