- 0:00Speaker 1: He is Jose I am Preston. Great to be with
- 0:02Speaker 1: you as always. Thanks for sharing time, whether you are
- 0:05Speaker 1: listening to us on old fashion radio or on that
- 0:10Speaker 1: new thing called your smartphone or your laptop or desktop
- 0:14Speaker 1: via iHeartRadio. We appreciate you joining us and we are
- 0:17Speaker 1: thrilled to have with us once again. He's the former
- 0:19Speaker 1: Speaker of the House of Representatives for the Sunshine State.
- 0:23Speaker 1: He is a US Navy veteran and running for governor.
- 0:26Speaker 1: He is Paul Renner. Paul, good to have you back
- 0:28Speaker 1: on the show.
- 0:28Speaker 2: How are you, sir, Great to be here, Preston, Good morning.
- 0:32Speaker 1: Tell me how's the fundraising going since you made the announcement?
- 0:36Speaker 2: Not too bad? Three point seven million in the first
- 0:39Speaker 2: thirty five days. So you, in a challenged math guy
- 0:42Speaker 2: like me can figure out that map, it's pretty good.
- 0:46Speaker 1: What's resonating, Paul? What aspect of your message do you
- 0:50Speaker 1: find making the biggest, biggest impact for you?
- 0:55Speaker 2: Well, people want to know what's going to happen after
- 0:57Speaker 2: Governor DeSantis leave, and he's been a leader, and people
- 1:01Speaker 2: feel like maybe we're going to slip back, and so
- 1:03Speaker 2: they want somebody with a lot of leadership background. They
- 1:05Speaker 2: hear that. I was in the military twenty years, served
- 1:07Speaker 2: in two wars, was a state attorney, fighting for victims,
- 1:11Speaker 2: fighting against violent offenders, and a successful two years a speaker.
- 1:16Speaker 2: People want results. They want the same kind of results
- 1:19Speaker 2: they had with the governor, and in those two years,
- 1:21Speaker 2: we had a very conservative and consequential two years, as
- 1:24Speaker 2: you know, and people want to keep pushing forward, and
- 1:28Speaker 2: they look at me and say, this is the guy
- 1:29Speaker 2: that can logically do that.
- 1:32Speaker 1: When you look at the issues that are kind of
- 1:34Speaker 1: laying out in front of whoever the next governor is
- 1:37Speaker 1: what's number one?
- 1:40Speaker 2: Well, affordability, I think is what I hear from everybody.
- 1:42Speaker 2: You know, everything's more expensive, and there's things government can
- 1:45Speaker 2: fix or help to fix, and there's things we can't.
- 1:48Speaker 2: In many cases, government's the problem. And in DC they've
- 1:51Speaker 2: printed money, borrowed money over and over again. They can't
- 1:53Speaker 2: even get a budget passed. You know, in Florida, we
- 1:56Speaker 2: balance our budget, We've had record tax relief, we had
- 1:59Speaker 2: money to give back to the people who paid it,
- 2:01Speaker 2: and we paid down debt early in advance. I mean,
- 2:03Speaker 2: nobody's ever going to confuse us. For the federal government.
- 2:05Speaker 2: I can tell you that and we don't do shutdowns either,
- 2:08Speaker 2: So we are just very, very different. And people want,
- 2:13Speaker 2: you know, government to not overspend so that they can
- 2:17Speaker 2: have more in their pocket. And I think fundamentally to
- 2:19Speaker 2: this question of affordability is government should do less so
- 2:22Speaker 2: we can keep more, and government shouldn't grow faster than
- 2:25Speaker 2: our pocketbooks allow. So if government's growing by fifty percent,
- 2:29Speaker 2: you know, and our wages are going by ten percent
- 2:31Speaker 2: or fifteen percent, that's a problem and that's where people are.
- 2:34Speaker 1: You know. One of the things I've commented on for
- 2:36Speaker 1: a long time doing this program, Paul, is that Florida
- 2:39Speaker 1: is a model. It proves first of all, the value
- 2:43Speaker 1: of a balanced budget amendment, that there's a constitutional mandate
- 2:48Speaker 1: to get the budget right here in Florida. And secondly,
- 2:51Speaker 1: it's a consumption tax state. There is no personal income
- 2:53Speaker 1: as tax, as you well know, and those two things
- 2:56Speaker 1: by themselves really can speak to the nation on how
- 3:00Speaker 1: to better run an efficient government effectively.
- 3:05Speaker 2: You're absolutely right. And the very first thing I did
- 3:08Speaker 2: in my second year a speaker, which is unusual. You
- 3:11Speaker 2: usually don't hear bills on opening day. It's a lot
- 3:13Speaker 2: of pomp and circumstance. Everybody has their flowers on their
- 3:15Speaker 2: desk and so forth. We passed a request and put
- 3:19Speaker 2: Florida on the record as a state that wanted to
- 3:23Speaker 2: see the US Congress at not them a convention of
- 3:27Speaker 2: states pass a balanced budget amendment to the Constitution as
- 3:31Speaker 2: well as a line item veto. I think you've seen
- 3:33Speaker 2: how the governor and I as governor, would be very
- 3:37Speaker 2: careful to make sure we don't have any waste in
- 3:39Speaker 2: our budget. It happens in the budgeting process, and to
- 3:42Speaker 2: give the president that power as well. But a balance budget,
- 3:44Speaker 2: you're right, Listen, Republicans like to spend money too. We
- 3:47Speaker 2: see that in Washington, DC. They can't help themselves, and
- 3:50Speaker 2: so having that discipline in the Constitution is critical.
- 3:54Speaker 1: You can go to the website vote Renner dot com
- 3:57Speaker 1: if you'd like to get involved with the campaign some cash. Again,
- 4:03Speaker 1: it's vote Renterer dot com. I always encourage you don't
- 4:06Speaker 1: give to the party. I can't stand the Republican Party
- 4:10Speaker 1: because they still haven't figured out how to message, and
- 4:13Speaker 1: I've been in I've had a beef with them for
- 4:15Speaker 1: most of my adult life since becoming a Republican in
- 4:18Speaker 1: nineteen seventy eight. But if you want to support a candidate.
- 4:22Speaker 1: You could do that directly and again vote Renter dot com. Paul. Obviously,
- 4:28Speaker 1: we've got the affordability issue, and it spills into a
- 4:30Speaker 1: whole lot of things. It covers housing, and defining what
- 4:34Speaker 1: affordable housing is is always going to be a bit
- 4:37Speaker 1: of a challenge. But it also really spills into the
- 4:40Speaker 1: healthcare industry. We've talked at nauseum on this program about Obamacare.
- 4:47Speaker 1: How much impact can we negate of Obamacare while it
- 4:51Speaker 1: remains in effect.
- 4:54Speaker 2: Well, here's the problem is it's the rotten trunk on
- 4:57Speaker 2: the tree. And so people are talking now in the
- 5:00Speaker 2: Republican Party about, you know, working with Obamacare, you know,
- 5:04Speaker 2: refforming it. You know, basically it's going to be a
- 5:08Speaker 2: continuation of the subsidies you saw under Biden because it
- 5:11Speaker 2: just doesn't work. And so I'm still in the mind
- 5:14Speaker 2: that we need to repeal it, we need to replace
- 5:16Speaker 2: it with something that's free market based. Because you've seen
- 5:19Speaker 2: everything go up since Obamacare. Deductibles, copays are up, Coverage
- 5:24Speaker 2: is no better, and so it has not brought down
- 5:28Speaker 2: rates as it promised to do. You were not able
- 5:30Speaker 2: to keep your doctor if you wanted it. As you
- 5:32Speaker 2: were promised to do, and so over and over again.
- 5:36Speaker 2: The promises were not truthful. I think they knew that
- 5:39Speaker 2: going in, but it was a path to socialized medicine,
- 5:42Speaker 2: a path a single payer. If you look at you know,
- 5:45Speaker 2: costs for dental care, for example, less regulated by the government,
- 5:49Speaker 2: much more reasonable cost relative to medical care. We've got
- 5:53Speaker 2: to do that. We've got to make sure we have
- 5:54Speaker 2: a free market, more free market approach to healthcare. And
- 5:57Speaker 2: then the other thing we also need to focus on, well,
- 6:00Speaker 2: and I'll do that as governor, is make sure you know,
- 6:02Speaker 2: we're not feeding really bad stuff to our kids where
- 6:06Speaker 2: they become obese, where they have a lifetime of health issues.
- 6:08Speaker 2: And it's true for adults too. We want to live healthier,
- 6:11Speaker 2: longer lives, and so that can also help us bring
- 6:14Speaker 2: down costs.
- 6:16Speaker 1: Tell me your thoughts on how we kind of broaden
- 6:22Speaker 1: the marketplace. You know, there's talk of, you know, you
- 6:25Speaker 1: need to allow competition in the healthcare field, and that
- 6:30Speaker 1: has got to bring you know, more of a free
- 6:33Speaker 1: market approach to it, which is allowing people outside of
- 6:36Speaker 1: Florida to compete in Florida if they want to.
- 6:39Speaker 2: I was a big proponent in file bills past bills
- 6:42Speaker 2: for shared savings. And the way that works is we're
- 6:45Speaker 2: not talking about you're in an ambulance and going into
- 6:47Speaker 2: the emergency room, but if it's if it's a surgery
- 6:50Speaker 2: like a knee surgery, hit surgery you schedule out. There
- 6:53Speaker 2: is an incredible cost differential depending on where you park
- 6:56Speaker 2: your car. Take an MRI, it's the same MRI machine.
- 7:00Speaker 2: There's a big difference between what you pay at one
- 7:02Speaker 2: location versus the other. And so he said, okay, let's
- 7:04Speaker 2: let patients capture some of that savings. That's what the
- 7:08Speaker 2: shared savings means, and so that they go somewhere that's
- 7:11Speaker 2: just as good and they save a little bit of money.
- 7:13Speaker 2: It puts them in the driver's seat of shopping their
- 7:16Speaker 2: care like we shop an automobile, like we shop a
- 7:19Speaker 2: house or any o their big purchase. We give them
- 7:22Speaker 2: the ability to put that money back in their pockets.
- 7:24Speaker 2: And by doing so, it means the high priced providers
- 7:28Speaker 2: have to bring that price down to what's reasonable. In
- 7:31Speaker 2: doing so is a way to introduce the market into
- 7:34Speaker 2: healthcare and start to bring costs down. If it's successful,
- 7:37Speaker 2: and we've seen that work at the state.
- 7:39Speaker 1: Level, joining us Paul Renner running for governor for the
- 7:42Speaker 1: state of Florida. The GOP nomination comes first. Paul, A
- 7:46Speaker 1: lot of people will say, well, the legislature's never going
- 7:49Speaker 1: to be too friendly to the idea of radical change
- 7:51Speaker 1: because they're just too many attorneys in the legislature. Your response, well,
- 7:57Speaker 1: I am one.
- 7:58Speaker 2: I'd like to think I'm a good one. I was
- 7:59Speaker 2: a prop cocuter, I was a business I'm a business attorney.
- 8:03Speaker 2: But h and it helps I think to understand kind
- 8:05Speaker 2: of how the laws are written. But there's a lot
- 8:08Speaker 2: of lobbyists out there. There's a lot of people. What
- 8:10Speaker 2: I learned when people say what are you surprised about,
- 8:12Speaker 2: is that if there's a good idea that's pure common sense,
- 8:16Speaker 2: that seems non controversial, there's somebody somewhere in tallahasse He,
- 8:20Speaker 2: just like Washington, DC, that wants to keep it just
- 8:22Speaker 2: the way it is, even though it's good reform. And
- 8:25Speaker 2: so as speaker, I was proud to really push against
- 8:28Speaker 2: that idea to say, look, I don't care if the
- 8:31Speaker 2: whole you know, lobby core is lobbied up on one side.
- 8:33Speaker 2: We're going to make sure we do what's right for
- 8:36Speaker 2: patients as we just discuss or consumers in the case
- 8:39Speaker 2: of insurance reform, and just go through that process and
- 8:42Speaker 2: say what's good to bring down costs, what's good for
- 8:45Speaker 2: human thriving and prosperity and these kinds of things when
- 8:48Speaker 2: it comes to affordability, and let's do those things. And
- 8:51Speaker 2: you know, let the special interest to stand on the
- 8:53Speaker 2: sideline and fight.
- 8:54Speaker 1: Last question for I know you got to run here,
- 8:56Speaker 1: but I'm curious. A new governor is going to come
- 8:59Speaker 1: in with new leadership in the House and the Senate.
- 9:02Speaker 1: Your thoughts on the future leaders on both of those bodies,
- 9:07Speaker 1: very very optimistic.
- 9:08Speaker 2: We've got two great guys, Jim Boyd Sam Gearson coming
- 9:11Speaker 2: in as presiding officers below. That is a great group
- 9:14Speaker 2: of men and women in the House and Senate. You know, look,
- 9:18Speaker 2: if you look at the last two years and you
- 9:20Speaker 2: see the productivity we have, We've got a lot of good,
- 9:22Speaker 2: strong conservatives. We just got to bring that band back
- 9:24Speaker 2: together and keep pushing, and as governor, will have a
- 9:27Speaker 2: bold agenda to address these issues of affordability and all
- 9:31Speaker 2: the other issues that Florida faces going forward.
- 9:34Speaker 1: Thanks so much for the time today. Look forward to
- 9:35Speaker 1: talking with you again soon. Thanks Preston appreciate it. Paul
- 9:38Speaker 1: Renner with us this morning and again. You can go
- 9:41Speaker 1: to the website vote Renner dot com if you'd like
- 9:43Speaker 1: to learn more. Seventeen past the Hour
