Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Donna Demaio: Australia Correspondent on Lidia Thorpe heckling King Charles and the reaction from politicians
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: The protests certainly got some reaction and some headlines didn't it.
- 0:04Speaker 1: This is the Australian Senator Lydia Thorpe reaction. Donna Demeyo,
- 0:17Speaker 1: Our Australia corresponds with us Donna, good morning. What has
- 0:21Speaker 1: the reaction been.
- 0:22Speaker 2: Yes, we're quite a hostile reception for the Royals in
- 0:25Speaker 2: Canberra and it was just a few meters away that
- 0:28Speaker 2: the Royal couple sat through this rather intense heckling from
- 0:33Speaker 2: the Independent Senator Lydia Thorpe. The reaction, of course has
- 0:36Speaker 2: been quite swift. We know that the Australian Monarchist League
- 0:41Speaker 2: wants her to step down immediately, calling the protest a childish.
- 0:49Speaker 2: Then we heard from Australia's first female Aboriginal senator, Nova Paris,
- 0:54Speaker 2: and she's actually issued what some people are saying is
- 0:59Speaker 2: literally an apoll to the King, saying it was a
- 1:02Speaker 2: rude outburst and a disrespectful attempt to confront the King.
- 1:07Speaker 2: We know that the senator was escorted out by security.
- 1:11Speaker 2: There was even an expletely yelled out in fact, as
- 1:15Speaker 2: Camilla and Charles sat there. There was no reaction from
- 1:17Speaker 2: the Royals. Mind you. The PM also was in the
- 1:21Speaker 2: Room and his fiancee and Peter Dutton, quite a selection
- 1:25Speaker 2: of politicians of course. But we've also heard from front
- 1:28Speaker 2: benches from both sides and they're saying it was just
- 1:30Speaker 2: grand standing and it actually just failed miserably.
- 1:33Speaker 1: Yeah, lots of reaction coming from the UK as well,
- 1:36Speaker 1: and I'll get to some of that in a second,
- 1:37Speaker 1: but very quickly, Donna, there's a massive compensation bill coming
- 1:41Speaker 1: for Quantas.
- 1:42Speaker 2: Huge Quandas is facing a well about one hundred million
- 1:46Speaker 2: dollar plus payout for illegal sackings. It's a hefty bill
- 1:50Speaker 2: for unlawfully laying off staff during the pandemic and it
- 1:52Speaker 2: impacts about seventeen hundred workers that lost their job in
- 1:56Speaker 2: twenty twenty. Now they've got to get together, the lawyers
- 1:59Speaker 2: will get together and tender mediation to determine that final
- 2:02Speaker 2: amount payout.
- 2:04Speaker 1: All right, Donna, thank you very much for that. That's
- 2:05Speaker 1: done into our Australia Correspondent.
- 2:08Speaker 2: For more from Early edition with Ryan Bridge. Listen live
- 2:11Speaker 2: to News Talks.
- 2:12Speaker 1: It'd be from five am weekdays, or follow the podcast
- 2:15Speaker 1: on iHeartRadio.
