- 0:00Hey, Happy New Year. Welcome back to another episode of the Health with Hashimoto's podcast.
- 0:04It is 2025, unless you're listening to this in the future, in which case it might be 2026 or beyond.
- 0:12We are celebrating today in the school community.
- 0:16So the school community is where you can find a group of other people who all
- 0:20are on this journey with you. We all have a similar mindset.
- 0:24We all know that we have things that we can do to increase our health.
- 0:28We're not relying on other people to make the decisions for us, like doctors.
- 0:33Yes, they are on our team. We want to use them as a resource,
- 0:38but we know that our health is up to us and the small decisions that we make every single day.
- 0:45So come on over to our school community. School is spelled S-K-O-O-L.
- 0:49It is a huge platform of hundreds or thousands of different groups.
- 0:55Kind of like Facebook was back in the beginning or even back in forum days where
- 1:02you go to your group and that's all you see.
- 1:04You see the things that are posted. You don't see what the algorithm decides
- 1:07to show you. I love that about school. There are no ads.
- 1:11When I'm scrolling on my school feed, I see exactly what people have written.
- 1:16I see follow-ups. I see conversations. I don't see ads.
- 1:21I don't see what Facebook or Instagram or TikTok thinks that I want to see,
- 1:26I see what's actually there.
- 1:28And over in the school community, I just did a workshop. We did it live on Zoom.
- 1:34That is a perk for being in our school community, which is free,
- 1:38by the way. The school community is free.
- 1:40And so I posted on there, we're going to do a call.
- 1:43Here's the Zoom link and anybody who was available came and we chatted about celebrating for 2024.
- 1:50And then we went through the Transform Your Year workbook and how to make plans.
- 1:57So if you want to do that, head over to school.com, join the Health with Hashimoto's
- 2:02community. Like I said, it's totally free.
- 2:04And the Transform Your Year workshop, that class in the classroom tab, 100% free.
- 2:10The workbook is there. You can download it, you can print it,
- 2:13and then there's a video of me walking you through it. You can do this any time.
- 2:18I actually created the workbook when it was my birthday, not in December or January.
- 2:25I like to do that reflection on my birthday because I feel like that is like my new year.
- 2:32So that is when I originally did it and we did the workshop,
- 2:35the Zoom together yesterday.
- 2:38So I invite you over to school. Also in the school community, you will see a fun perk.
- 2:44And that is if I do any interviews, which I do have interviews planned for 2025
- 2:50for you on the podcast, you get early access to them over in the school community.
- 2:55I am also asking guests if they would be willing to come and do a Zoom with
- 3:01the community after the podcast goes live.
- 3:05So right now, I have a pharmacist who came and we talked all about LDN or low dose naltrexone.
- 3:13And that podcast episode will be this month in January.
- 3:17But the school community members already have access to that video interview.
- 3:23And the call with that pharmacist is already scheduled on our calendar.
- 3:29So if you are interested in joining that call, you have to join the school community
- 3:34to be able to get that link.
- 3:36And I am so excited because, you know, I did ask what questions do you guys
- 3:41have? I asked that in the group, and I got some good questions.
- 3:45But this call is going to allow everybody to ask their own questions.
- 3:49And I'm just super excited. So come on over and join. Those are just some of
- 3:53the perks you get as a school community member.
- 3:56Of course, there's also the other courses that I have, like the Holistic Hashimoto's course.
- 4:01And in January, a lot of people are looking forward to different ways that they
- 4:06can improve their health.
- 4:07The Health with Hashimoto's course, sorry, the Holistic Hashimoto's course is
- 4:12an excellent thing to do.
- 4:14I'm going to walk you through simple and sustainable ways that you can change
- 4:19your health, you can address your root causes.
- 4:21And that leads me to today's topic. What is a root cause?
- 4:25What is a root cause? I talk about it all the time. And so for me, it just feels obvious.
- 4:32But it's not obvious. And I'm sorry that I have just been assuming that everybody was understanding.
- 4:40So let's talk about what is a root cause. Now, if I get a cold,
- 4:46I'm thinking I have four boys.
- 4:48And there are some times when like you are holding your toddler or your preschooler,
- 4:54and they have a cold, and they look right at you in your face and they sneeze or they cough.
- 5:02And you're like, oh, there it is.
- 5:05You just gave me your cold. You know the moment that it happens because it's so obvious.
- 5:12Or, you know, your kid pukes on you. So disgusting.
- 5:15But you're like, oh, there's my exposure. Like you can pinpoint the time that
- 5:20you were exposed to that germ, to that bacteria or the virus or whatever it
- 5:25is. That is one type of a root cause.
- 5:29The root cause is the bacteria or the virus, the germ, the foreign thing that is now attacking you.
- 5:37That is it. You know it.
- 5:40But when I talk about root causes, it's not necessarily that.
- 5:43It's not necessarily the one
- 5:45point in time where you were exposed to Hashimoto's or where it started.
- 5:51Because number one, Hashimoto's is not contagious.
- 5:54So we can't catch it from somebody. and also
- 5:57there are so many different things that
- 6:00are the root causes so I talk about you know
- 6:03figuring out what are what is your root cause or what are your root causes because
- 6:09there are multiple and I do have some episodes about that somebody was just
- 6:14saying that AI is now scraping podcasts and stealing content to use in, I guess, in AI.
- 6:23So they were recommending that people take some of their podcast content,
- 6:28leave it up for a while and then make it private so that the AI can no longer scrape it.
- 6:33As of right now, I do have all of my podcast episodes available.
- 6:38I believe it's episodes 60 and 61 that I talked about the root causes.
- 6:44I think it's those two. And now I'm debating, maybe I take them and I put them
- 6:49into a private podcast for people who are interested in figuring that out. I have not decided yet.
- 6:55So by the time you listen to this, if you go and look, they might be gone,
- 6:58but they are in the school community.
- 7:01The episodes were based on the root causes course that I do.
- 7:08It is the Hashimoto's Decoded Root Causes, and that is in the school community.
- 7:12So I have that. I go through all of the root causes because when I say root
- 7:17causes, I don't mean like a one specific thing that started it.
- 7:23I have plants. And I have been on this journey of figuring out how to not kill plants.
- 7:30Back when we got married 21 years ago, my husband once told me that I do not have a green thumb.
- 7:38I have a gangrene thumb because I kill plants when I get them.
- 7:42I have been working hard on that. I've been working on trying to remember to water them.
- 7:46Now I think maybe I'm overwatering them. So now some of them are dying.
- 7:50It's this balancing action. I don't have it down yet, but I do have greenery in my house.
- 7:55And I know that it's not one root that's holding up my plant.
- 8:01It's not one little string that the nutrients are being delivered through.
- 8:05No, a plant, even a tiny little plant, has multiple little stringy roots.
- 8:10I have a couple seedlings starting.
- 8:12My husband gave me a hydroponic, is that what I call it? Hydroponic garden, where it's just water.
- 8:19And so I've got little seedlings started. It's so exciting.
- 8:22And those little roots, they already have so many little strings coming off
- 8:27of them. It's not just the one tap root.
- 8:30And that is it for your health too. It's not just one thing.
- 8:33When I say we're looking for the root of your Hashimoto's, I'm not talking about
- 8:39one exact instance when you got sick.
- 8:42I'm talking about all of the things that support your health.
- 8:46And so those roots of your Hashimoto's, your autoimmune problem,
- 8:51could be stress and diet and genetics and your gut.
- 8:59Like it could be all of those things. And it probably is.
- 9:03It probably is multiple things because we are complex human beings.
- 9:09We're not just data. We're not a computer.
- 9:12We're not a robot. We are a complex human being, and there is so much depth to you.
- 9:18And so when we're looking for the root of the Hashimoto's, we have to look broadly.
- 9:24So what does that mean then? Great question.
- 9:28Well, we know that every autoimmune condition starts with three things.
- 9:33Because the autoimmune conditions, they all have different names based on what
- 9:37is being attacked in the body, but they all are your immune system.
- 9:41So they all have three things in common.
- 9:43Every single autoimmune problem has a gut component.
- 9:47Your gut is responsible for 70 to 85% of your immune system.
- 9:54It's so big. So this would include the foods that you eat.
- 9:59Maybe you are sensitive to gluten or that causes inflammatory response in you.
- 10:03Maybe it's the lining of your gut. Maybe you have leaky gut.
- 10:07Maybe it is your microbiome. Maybe you don't have enough probiotics or you don't
- 10:12have the right probiotics.
- 10:14Maybe you have an overgrowth of bad ones.
- 10:17People talk about SIBO, which is small intestinal placebo bacteria overgrowth.
- 10:23And you can do things about that. There are so many things within the gut that you can do.
- 10:28So we know that there is always a gut component with an autoimmune condition.
- 10:32We also know that there's always a genetic component. And that's kind of where
- 10:37we see which autoimmune problem that you have.
- 10:41A lot of autoimmune problems, not
- 10:43all of them, but a lot of them do have a genetic disposition or you do.
- 10:48So for me, I have Hashimoto's. That means that I can look back at my family
- 10:54and I can see other people who have had Hashimoto's and not all of them have
- 10:58Hashimoto's that has presented.
- 11:01Like my dad, he does not have Hashimoto's, at least not that I know of, not that he knows of.
- 11:06He doesn't go to the doctor, but he doesn't have the symptoms,
- 11:09but I know that his parents and his cousins, there are so many people on that
- 11:15side of the family and my dad's side that all have Hashimoto's.
- 11:18So I know that my dad gave me a gene or that genetic disposition towards Hashimoto's.
- 11:27So when my autoimmune or my immune system started to go haywire,
- 11:31started to attack myself, it was that genetic predisposition that said,
- 11:36okay, this is where we're going to attack ester first, because that is how my genes are wired.
- 11:42And maybe somebody else's genes are wired for something else.
- 11:46Maybe something else runs in that family, is how we say it.
- 11:50It's still your immune system. It's still your immune system going haywire,
- 11:53and it's your genetic predisposition to where it's going to attack.
- 11:59So we know that there's a genetic component. We know there's a gut component.
- 12:02And then the third thing that every single autoimmune condition has is one or more triggers.
- 12:07So when I'm talking about root causes, I'm talking about all of those things.
- 12:12It's not just a, like, who gave me this?
- 12:16Like when your kid coughs in your face and gives you a cold.
- 12:18That's not what I'm talking about. I'm talking about.
- 12:22Everything that is supporting or doing the opposite of supporting,
- 12:27like sabotaging your health.
- 12:29Those are the roots that we want to address when you have Hashimoto's.
- 12:33And that is what I do in the Hashimoto's Decoded Root Causes course.
- 12:38If you come to the school community, you're going to go to the classroom tab
- 12:42and you're going to see, I think right now there's like nine different tabs in there.
- 12:46One of them is the Hashimoto's Decoded Root Causes course.
- 12:50And that is right now is $7. If you know that you're going to do the holistic Hashimoto's course,
- 12:56then skip the root causes and just do the holistic Hashimoto's course because
- 13:01we start out with the Hashimoto's decoded root causes in the holistic Hashimoto's course.
- 13:07I can't take you through the whole course without looking at the root causes.
- 13:11So skip that $7 one, go straight into the holistic Hashimoto's course where
- 13:16we first will help you figure out what are your root causes.
- 13:21And then after you figure them out, there's that saying, when you know better, you can do better.
- 13:27When you know what's going on, what's causing your health problems,
- 13:33then you can address them.
- 13:34And are you going to know every single thing? Am I going to have you do crazy
- 13:39expensive labs like some functional medicine doctors do? No.
- 13:42I'm just going to walk you through the most common root causes,
- 13:46and you're going to use logic.
- 13:48You're going to say, oh, okay, environmental toxins.
- 13:51Yes, I basically grew up.
- 13:54Breathing Bath & Body Works. I love Glade scented plugins.
- 14:00I have scented everything. When I wash my laundry, I have scented laundry detergent.
- 14:06I have scented softener.
- 14:08I have scented everything.
- 14:11So yes, using logic, there's probably some environmental toxins of environmental
- 14:19toxin load going on in your body.
- 14:22And yep, that can be a trigger.
- 14:24Do I need expensive labs to figure that out? No, we just need logic.
- 14:29So that is how I approach it in the Holistic Hashimoto's course.
- 14:33Yes, you can do labs. And I do encourage you to do some labs.
- 14:38We want to know, is your thyroid producing enough T4?
- 14:43Is your liver and the rest of your body converting that T4 to T3 so that your cells can use it.
- 14:50Do you have a high level of reverse T3, which is when your body says,
- 14:56oh, here's some T4, but I don't want more energy. We actually need to prioritize rest and healing.
- 15:03So we're going to put the brakes on. And instead of converting that T4 to T3,
- 15:07we're going to convert it to reverse T3. That's the brake system.
- 15:11And I feel like that is a very important lab. I want to know if my body is saying,
- 15:17no, we're not going to prioritize converting T4 to T3.
- 15:20We're going to put the brakes on. I feel like that is important to know.
- 15:23I want to know if the gas is on or if the brakes are on, right?
- 15:26We also want to know our antibody levels and I want to know them on a trend.
- 15:31So when I'm looking at mine, I want to know what were they last time I had them?
- 15:36Are they going up? Are they going down?
- 15:38Is what I'm doing with my life, with my diet, with my environment,
- 15:42with my stress level, all of these things.
- 15:45Is that making my antibodies go up or am I healing?
- 15:51Are they going back down?
- 15:53I want to know those labs.
- 15:55But to figure out your root causes, a lot of times you just need logic.
- 16:00So I don't know about you, but my husband and I, we have four boys. The budget is tight.
- 16:05One of the kids broke multiple bones this year.
- 16:08I mean, our medical expenses were up.
- 16:12And so sometimes you're in that position where you have to choose.
- 16:16Am I going to do a bunch of lab tests, which will give me knowledge and can be very, very helpful.
- 16:22And then I have to apply knowledge. You know, I have to apply that knowledge
- 16:26to my choices, what I'm going to do with it. And then.
- 16:31Based on the lab results, then maybe I would go join a course.
- 16:35I created the holistic Hashimoto's course so that you can use logic.
- 16:40So you don't need to do a bunch of huge testing first. You can do the things that make sense.
- 16:45Like I said, environmental toxins, all of those smelling things,
- 16:49scented things, that's an obvious one.
- 16:52You don't need expensive testing to look back in your history and say,
- 16:56oh yeah, that is definitely part of my history.
- 17:00And it could be a root cause. And we go through all of the root causes,
- 17:05and then I help you figure out exactly what to do for them.
- 17:09So I love that we can address some things just on a basic level.
- 17:14And I do that with supplements too. When I walk you through the supplements.
- 17:17You know, I know that you're a human first.
- 17:19So we look at what do you need as a human? And then we go deeper.
- 17:23Okay, what do you need for your specific situation.
- 17:25But first, you're human. And then for Hashimoto's, we know that you have Hashimoto's.
- 17:30So let's look at the most common root causes and figure out what to do for them.
- 17:34And so now I hope you know what I mean when I say you're going to look for and
- 17:40address your root causes.
- 17:41It's not just one thing. It could be many things.
- 17:44And when you join the Holistic Hashimoto's course, I'm going to walk you through those.
- 17:49And I'm going to walk you through the solutions so that you can figure out exactly
- 17:53what to do for your situation, for your root causes, and for this time in your life.
- 17:59You know exactly what's going on. You know what you have time for.
- 18:03You know what you have brain space for. You know what you have bandwidth for.
- 18:07And so I will help you figure out exactly what to do right now for your health.
- 18:13I will see you in our school community, especially in the Holistic Hashimoto's course.
- 18:19This podcast is for informational and educational purposes only.
- 18:23Please discuss any concerns and plans with your trusted healthcare professional.
- 18:27If you found this episode helpful, will you please share it with a friend?
- 18:30I'll see you next week on the Health with Hashimoto's podcast.
