Speaker 2: He told us he's our favorite fan.
• 0:28
Speaker 2: Because he told us he's our favorite fan.
• 0:30
Speaker 1: I know that's what he said, yeah.
• 0:31
Speaker 2: If you don't believe it, just ask us.
• 0:32
  Speaker 2: That's right.
• 0:33
Speaker 1: Jeff has the cruise in calendar and event calendars and we'll have the stories making automotive news headlines this week in this segment.
• 0:39
Speaker 1: Howdy, along with Mike out of this world, mars.
• 0:46
Speaker 1: We always need more.
• 0:46
Speaker 1: Jeff Zekin, I'm Don Armstrong, glad you could join us for our Saturday get-together, if you want to call it that.
• 0:50
Speaker 2: Labor Day weekend it is.
• 0:52
Speaker 2: Any plans for anybody?
• 0:54
Speaker 1: No, okay, couch, I'm going to marry the couch today.
• 0:57
Speaker 1: Ooh Right, george is married.
• 1:01
Speaker 1: He's married to us on Saturday mornings.
• 1:05
Speaker 1: And now, ladies and gentlemen, my friend from grade school, middle school and high school here he is in living color George Skelton.
• 1:15
Speaker 2: He's married to a woman that needs support.
• 1:18
Speaker 2: You know she needs sympathy.
• 1:20
Speaker 1: Yeah, well, I was just going to say mental support for marrying George.
• 1:23
Speaker 1: But we love you, George, you know that Well love you.
• 1:24
Speaker 1: George, you know that.
• 1:26
Speaker 3: Well, thank you very much.
• 1:27
Speaker 1: Yeah, so George's history is such that he had, is it your aunt?
• 1:34
Speaker 1: Your aunt this is my cousin, your cousin Betty, cousin Betty Skelton, famous Corvette owner, aviator, all of the things that she did back in the day.
• 1:46
Speaker 1: And George's dad ran Metropolitan Theater, Cool Downtown, and George just spent many, I guess, weekend down there selling popcorn and showing people to their seat and kicking those people out that were necking up in the balcony and rubbing elbows with stars.
• 2:07
Speaker 1: And rubbing elbows with stars, yeah, which he still does.
• 2:12
Speaker 3: Well, occasionally, but Don I got to tell you, Ray, Ray, I am in your element.
• 2:17
Speaker 2: Yes, I'll bet you are.
• 2:19
Speaker 2: He's not wearing pants.
• 2:20
Speaker 3: And right behind me is your next car.
• 2:23
Speaker 1: Is my next one, and which one is that?
• 2:25
Speaker 3: That is the brand new E-Ray.
• 2:27
  Speaker 3: Oh, that's it.
• 2:32
Speaker 3: Oh cool, and it's only $115,000.
• 2:36
  Speaker 1: $115,000.
• 2:38
Speaker 3: That's the base price.
• 2:40
  Speaker 1: Yeah, chump change.
• 2:41
Speaker 3: And after listening to your earlier guest, that means that probably your entire Social Security check you could buy that.
• 2:50
Speaker 1: Yeah, no, it won't even come close to that, but it doesn't look much different than the other C8s that are out there.
• 2:57
Speaker 3: Well, my wife fell in love with it the color, everything about it, the breaking charging, all the stuff that it does, and so I'm afraid she's gonna say she wants one that?
• 3:12
Speaker 1: did you get a chance to drive it?
• 3:15
Speaker 3: Oh no, no, they didn't have any of them to drive.
• 3:18
Speaker 3: Now she drove a simulator while she was there and that was an interesting experience, I no doubt that I just stand back and smile.
• 3:27
Speaker 3: Oh my gosh, but this weekend was the 30th anniversary caravan and, Don, you've got to come to one of these.
• 3:39
Speaker 1: You know it's funny.
• 3:39
Speaker 1: You should say that because Leslie said you know this is the weekend of the caravan, how come you're not on the caravan?
• 3:44
  Speaker 1: I said you know, I don't know, I don't know why, because?
• 3:49
Speaker 2: some of them left on Tuesday.
• 3:50
Speaker 1: Well, that is part of the reason.
• 3:52
Speaker 1: Yeah, your schedule yeah, but you know there wasn't an official caravan from houston.
• 3:57
Speaker 1: I think the official texas caravan left dallas but there was a group that left houston, met up with corvette clubs and other corvette people in the dallas area and then went on to bowling green in a great big caravan up there.
• 4:11
Speaker 1: And you know, one of these days I'm going to do that, before I die, I hope.
• 4:16
  Speaker 3: You better hurry.
• 4:16
Speaker 3: Because I stayed at the hotel with the Carolina and Virginia Corvette Club and all they could tell me about was coming in the caravan with a police escort at 80 miles an hour.
• 4:31
  Speaker 3: 80?
• 4:32
  Speaker 3: At 80.
• 4:34
Speaker 3: Nice, it was unbelievable.
• 4:40
Speaker 3: And the stories talking to these folks at breakfast, every day I'd meet somebody new and oh my gosh.
• 4:47
  Speaker 1: The stories.
• 4:47
  Speaker 3: You're in heaven.
• 4:48
Speaker 3: And they still said that if In Wheel Time wants to come do a broadcast up there, they will let you park your Corvette right in the front of the museum.
• 4:59
Speaker 1: There you go, mars, you hear this.
• 5:02
Speaker 2: Where are we going to park the In Wheel Time Dodge Ram truck by the dumpster?
• 5:05
Speaker 1: Well, we're going to change out the emblems on it.
• 5:08
Speaker 1: Oh yeah, yeah, we could do that.
• 5:10
Speaker 3: Now, don imagine this.
• 5:12
Speaker 3: Now there were 8,000 Corvettes that came to this caravan in Bowling Green this weekend.
• 5:21
  Speaker 1: Well, I can't imagine it.
• 5:23
Speaker 1: I will tell you that I, as you know, have been on the Hot Rod Tour of Texas for the past three years.
• 5:29
Speaker 1: Texas for the past three years and the 250 cars that are on that, you, you really don't you think?
• 5:39
  Speaker 1: Oh, it's only 250 cars.
• 5:41
Speaker 1: Okay, we'll string the 250 cars bumper to bumper and, uh, it's several miles worth if you put any kind of distance at all between the cars, as you're traveling at 80 miles an hour I I sent you a couple of pictures of the hotel.
• 5:54
Speaker 1: Solid corvettes at the hotel no doubt I rented a cadillac for jeff thank you the rental car and, um uh, it was so out of place with those corvettes yeah, well, uh, now my my to you is has the wife said oh honey, let's get one?
• 6:15
Speaker 1: Just to say that we've got one in the stable out there.
• 6:21
  Speaker 3: Immediately.
• 6:22
Speaker 3: She was impressed with the zero to 60 in 2.5 seconds.
• 6:27
Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, but she wouldn't be too impressed trying to get in or out of the Corvette, I'm sure.
• 6:33
Speaker 3: She got into it fine, she sat in one they had on the floor and I got to tell you, if you've never been to that museum, it's a joy to walk around that thing and see the concept cars they have in there, to see the clay model Corvettes that they use in the airflow testing.
• 6:54
Speaker 3: Yeah, the wrecked ones from the sinkhole, the ones they've restored, and every model of corvette is represented.
• 7:02
Speaker 3: There's about 50 or 60 of them just in the museum and and it's, it's, and they explain things to you.
• 7:10
Speaker 3: I learned so much about Corvette I had no idea, but you would be in heaven.
• 7:15
Speaker 1: No doubt Did they still have the opening in the floor that you could look down and see where the sinkhole was.
• 7:22
Speaker 3: Yes, they do, and they have it marked in there where the hole was and they caution you standing on it while you're looking at these vets.
• 7:33
Speaker 3: And, by the way, they didn't have the E-ray sitting by that hole.
• 7:39
Speaker 2: So the hole is actually still there.
• 7:40
Speaker 2: I thought they covered it up Well, they did cover it Well they did?
• 7:44
Speaker 3: They put a pipe all the way down to the bottom of the hole, where you could see how far down it was.
• 7:49
  Speaker 2: Oh, okay.
• 7:50
Speaker 3: And they still go down there to make sure it's not going to cave in again yeah, I, I saw the video of.
• 7:57
Speaker 1: It was a time-lapse video of them after it had caved in and in the it shows them plucking out the corvettes that they plucked out of the hole and then filling the hole.
• 8:08
Speaker 1: It was a construction project like you've never seen, because it was still indoors.
• 8:13
Speaker 1: They didn't tear the building down to fill the hole and if you get a chance, go on YouTube and take a look at that.
• 8:20
Speaker 3: Here's the most interesting fact I learned about the museum.
• 8:24
Speaker 3: They make most of their money from raffling off brand new Corvettes.
• 8:29
Speaker 3: They have two types of raffles.
• 8:32
Speaker 3: They have an unlimited raffle and a limited raffle.
• 8:36
Speaker 3: A limited raffle of 750 dollars, but limited to 300 people.
• 8:41
Speaker 3: That's better odds than vegas.
• 8:44
Speaker 3: Yeah, the unlimited raffle could be three or four thousand people for twenty dollars and you still got time to do that today.
• 8:53
Speaker 3: If you want to win one of the base model corvettes that they've got, they're they're actually giving away today well, let me ask you this george, can I borrow seven hundred dollars?
• 9:03
Speaker 1: absolutely now are you guys still up there or did back?
• 9:10
Speaker 3: No, we got back late last night.
• 9:12
Speaker 3: Well, how far a trip is it from Temple up there?
• 9:21
Speaker 2: Oh, my gosh, I flew, so it wasn't bad at all.
• 9:22
Speaker 2: You had a Cadillac.
• 9:23
Speaker 2: It wasn't bad, you had a Cadillac.
• 9:24
Speaker 3: It was like three hours.
• 9:26
  Speaker 2: Yeah.
• 9:27
  Speaker 3: We had planned.
• 9:28
Speaker 3: Twyla's sister is up there and not doing too well.
• 9:33
Speaker 3: We went up to visit her so I was able to go to the museum and she went with me, so we had a dual purpose in going Sure.
• 9:42
Speaker 1: Do you have to drive to Dallas to catch a plane?
• 9:44
Speaker 1: Yep, about two hours.
• 9:48
  Speaker 1: That's not bad.
• 9:49
Speaker 1: No, it's not bad at all.
• 9:51
Speaker 3: But, guys, I got to tell you the motorsport enthusiasts that are up there, I mean they should all be watching your show because I'm telling you it's just fascinating some of the things you see.
• 10:05
Speaker 3: Not only do you see the most beautiful Corvettes in the world, but I saw some of the ugliest Corvettes I've ever seen that were barn finds and they have a whole section on barn finds and I mean you can go in there.
• 10:22
Speaker 3: If you need a chassis for your vet Don, you can get it there.
• 10:26
Speaker 3: It's not only a swap meet, it's crazy.
• 10:30
Speaker 3: So this is outside the museum.
• 10:32
Speaker 3: They have all the cars over at the motor at the racetrack and to park your car at the museum on the caravan it costs $700 for a parking space.
• 10:44
  Speaker 3: Oh hell no.
• 10:47
Speaker 1: Listen, I complain about $20 parking at the Astrodome, so I ain't going to do no $700.
• 10:54
Speaker 2: He makes his pay for parking out here.
• 10:58
Speaker 3: If you put your Corvette up next to one of these others that are out there, you'd have 10,000 pictures of it.
• 11:05
  Speaker 3: It's amazing.
• 11:07
Speaker 3: So the two of the cars came from New Zealand and Australia.
• 11:11
Speaker 3: They actually shipped them over to California and they drove from California to the museum for the event.
• 11:19
Speaker 1: This is not the 50th anniversary of the caravan.
• 11:23
Speaker 1: I think that that's coming up in a couple of years, isn't?
• 11:26
  Speaker 3: it.
• 11:26
  Speaker 3: It's the 30th, the 30th Museum's 50th.
• 11:31
  Speaker 1: Okay, the museum's 50th, the caravan's 30.
• 11:33
Speaker 1: So I guess next year I'll have to make plans.
• 11:37
Speaker 2: Five years they do the caravan every five years?
• 11:40
Speaker 2: Oh, every five years.
• 11:40
Speaker 2: So we got five years to get our sponsor to get us Save $700 for parking.
• 11:46
  Speaker 1: Do that, Mars.
• 11:47
Speaker 1: I'm depending on you.
• 11:49
  Speaker 1: Guess what?
• 11:50
Speaker 1: I'll be dead when that comes through.
• 11:53
Speaker 3: We ain't got time for that.
• 11:54
  Speaker 2: Let's do remote.
• 11:55
Speaker 2: From the hole down in the hole, We'll do remote down there.
• 11:59
Speaker 3: Wait, had the echo.
• 12:00
Speaker 3: They told me they'd put you right out front or they'd let you be in there where the people pick up their Corvettes.
• 12:08
Speaker 3: That would be fun.
• 12:09
Speaker 3: That is so much fun to watch people pick up these Corvettes.
• 12:13
Speaker 1: Well, maybe that's what I'll do.
• 12:14
Speaker 1: I'll sell the black one when I get there, and then I can pick up a brand new one that I've ordered from the factory right there.
• 12:22
Speaker 3: There is a Corvette guy who's located right north of the museum that would be more than happy to help you, I'm sure.
• 12:29
Speaker 1: And I know that you know him because you know everybody, george oh gosh, I tell you, though, it was absolutely fun.
• 12:36
Speaker 3: So if you're ever up in that way even if you're not a corvette fan just going through the museum and seeing the history of a corvette for example, right hand drive corvettes you ever seen one?
• 12:49
  Speaker 1: I yeah.
• 12:52
Speaker 3: I saw three of them, new ones, brand new yeah.
• 12:56
Speaker 3: I knew that they were making them, shipping them to Europe.
• 12:59
Speaker 1: Yeah, I knew that they were making them, but you know, back in the day they didn't make right-hand drive Corvettes.
• 13:06
Speaker 2: The only one I ever saw was.
• 13:07
  Speaker 3: Corvette Summer.
• 13:07
Speaker 3: And your favorite one, Don, would be the rear-engine Corvette.
• 13:13
Speaker 1: Well, one, don, would be the rear engine Corvette.
• 13:14
Speaker 1: Well, you know that rear engine Corvette has been around for millennia and there was hope when they came out with that thing.
• 13:22
Speaker 1: I guess it was back in the 70s, and there was hope then that they would have at least, if not a rear engine, a mid-engine Corvette.
• 13:31
Speaker 1: And they've been talking about this mid-engine Corvette for decades and decades and finally, with the C8 Corvette, they did the right thing.
• 13:40
Speaker 1: They couldn't go any further with what they had done with the front-engine Corvette.
• 13:45
Speaker 1: I mean, the balance was almost 50-50.
• 13:47
Speaker 1: You can't get any better than that and that's what you want in a sports car.
• 13:51
Speaker 1: Can't get any better than that and that's what you want in a sports car.
• 13:55
Speaker 1: And I will tell you that they worked really hard and diligently to get the, the new corvette, perfectly balanced.
• 13:59
Speaker 1: And boy, it is a beauty.
• 14:01
Speaker 1: I got a chance to ride in one.
• 14:02
Speaker 1: My buddy, craig, bought one for his wife and it's, it's magnificent.
• 14:07
Speaker 1: If I could afford one I'd love to buy we saw the corvette with 1036 horsepower oh yeah, the new ZL1.
• 14:17
Speaker 3: Oh my gosh, yeah, and it was based on the Sideswipe model that came out in 2009.
• 14:26
Speaker 3: They never built it, but they used a lot of the stuff out of it and that car is sitting in the museum and you see these concept cars and then you see what they evolved into and they show you.
• 14:38
Speaker 3: You're just kind of going, wow, these ideas have been around a while.
• 14:43
Speaker 1: Yeah, they definitely have.
• 14:44
Speaker 3: So when you had the Corvair and you were forward thinking, thinking, an engine in the back were Corvette.
• 14:52
Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly, and the reason that the Corvair came about is to compete against the Volkswagen Beetle and price affordability, handling and all that.
• 15:03
Speaker 1: Well, you know how the handling went.
• 15:05
Speaker 1: Oh yeah, george Nader got a hold of that.
• 15:08
Speaker 1: Ralph, ralph Nader got a hold of that and that was the end of that.
• 15:11
Speaker 1: But at any rate, well, george, it's great to talk to you.
• 15:13
Speaker 1: Thank you so much for joining us today.

• 15:28
Speaker 2: He can drive down in that new corvette yeah, come down in the new corvette, you're gonna get twice yeah, that's it got it, if your wife will let you yeah, yeah, yeah, exactly, thank you, george take care of yourself.
