- 0:06First of all, I want to say usually I'm like a sweatpants jim shorts
- 0:10guy in the studio. Uh. I wore actual like button up, zip
- 0:16up like shorts and a polo like a collared shirt for jelly roll. Don't
- 0:20lie. You got court today. Quit These people that public intoxication finally came
- 0:27back to bite you. I could use some legal advice. I'm yeah,
- 0:32yeah, I know I got First of all, I gotta tell you we
- 0:37were lucky enough less than two years ago. You walked in this studio and
- 0:44you had lunch out there and nobody bugged you. Yeah. It's crazy.
- 0:48I'm looking now there's people out there waving at me. Hello everybody. Let
- 0:51me ask you, hello, how do you process? How do you process
- 0:57the last two years? Because you went from a guy who could walk into
- 1:00a Walmart unbothered, and now I mean we met a security guy, I
- 1:04saw another security guy. I think I see Emertz guys out hawking T shirts.
- 1:08But how do you that's the bootlegger. Everybody's got bills, just grunted
- 1:14high school friend. Uh, but let me ask you, how do you
- 1:18process? How crazy different your life is in the last two years? Man,
- 1:21I'm just grateful. I'm honored. I mean, dude, it's a
- 1:26really cool situation to just like I think I'm also blown away a little bit,
- 1:32like I don't really do anything special right, Like I'm not I'm not
- 1:34a Keith Urban guitar player, you know what I mean. I'm not like
- 1:38I'm not really good at anything. Particularly, I'm out of shape, kind
- 1:42of ugly, bad tattoos, uneducated. I check all the boxes that should
- 1:47involve people not standing outside of a window waving at me, you know what
- 1:51I mean. So I think it's really cool. Man. Have you ever
- 1:55seen the movie Cinderella Man? Yeah? Absolutely, I thought about that.
- 1:57I'm still thinking about calling out a Cinderella Man. I've never talked about this,
- 2:01but the reason I didn't is because a lot of people didn't understand the
- 2:05reference. Oh for sure, I get it. Is it's like James Boxer,
- 2:07James Brack. I feel like him. Do you remember, like it
- 2:10was that time and he was just struggling and he was like too old to
- 2:14win a title and he was like the biggest underdog ever. And the scene
- 2:17in the movie that makes me want to cry. That maybe one of the
- 2:20name of my album, Cinderella mans. He's running through the streets and everybody's
- 2:23cheering for him, and he's confused as to why it's happening, right,
- 2:25so he grabs his manager. He goes, why are they cheering for me?
- 2:28And the manager goes, they think you're fighting for them. He just
- 2:35gave me goosemuops man. And that's how I feel. I feel like that's
- 2:38been the jelly roll appeal, you know what I mean. It's kind see
- 2:40I'm getting tear out, I swear. It's like that rocky thing, you
- 2:43know what I mean? Like, why did they start following them up to
- 2:46the final run? You know what I mean? People started seeing themselves in
- 2:47this guy. So I think that's kind of been what's cool about it?
- 2:51Let me ask you this then, knowing that you have made that connection,
- 2:54you are the underdog's champion. Maybe another album name right, right, that
- 3:00champion that feels more like a rap album, but right, we'll get that.
- 3:05I might have one of those left in. I'm not fifty yet,
- 3:07but but that title is so fitting because you have become that. But with
- 3:13that comes weight. There's a lot of people that, uh, regardless of
- 3:19the song, have a story how you change their lives or the song she
- 3:23how they had a family member who passed and that brought back So knowing that
- 3:27you wear that that heaviness because of those stories and you become you know this,
- 3:32You're friends with Dwayne the Rock Johnson. So I'm ste I'm gonna steal
- 3:36the people's champion. You do you do embody that? So what extra weight
- 3:39do you put on yourself when it comes to whatever step is next? When
- 3:42it comes to that, well, when we use the word weight here,
- 3:45Wayne, I'm trying to get it off as much of as post you look
- 3:47great. You look great. I've looked at my closers, need to do
- 3:52almost I'm about thirty pounds a way for having to get new clothes again.
- 3:54Listen, you better slow down. We're gonna start sharantee, She'm gonna start
- 3:57looking like you baby. No, it's a you know what, I don't
- 4:00feel it as much as people would anticipate, because I appreciate the vulnerability of
- 4:04brings. I was hoping that I could create the kind of music that would
- 4:10bring meaningful conversations back, you know what I mean, not just like there's
- 4:15a difference between Schnorkelin and going into a shipwreck. You know what I mean.
- 4:17I wanted people to start getting each other shipwrecks, and I think that's
- 4:21how we'll start to see humans for humans again, because right now we see
- 4:26them for political alliances or belief systems, you know what I mean, We
- 4:30don't see them for humans anymore. I wish, I'm hoping that's the beginning
- 4:33of us seeing people as children and mothers and fathers and uncles again. So
- 4:39as you say that, it immediately brought me back to when I was a
- 4:42kid. Everybody was welcome at every dinner table, every period. It's not
- 4:46like that anymore. Everybody was welcome at every dinner table. You didn't talk
- 4:49about religion or politics at the dinner table because you don't fight with your family.
- 4:54So being a guy who who is pretty much invited to any dinner t
- 5:00you transcend genres, music types, lifestyles, like nobody puts you in a
- 5:09box, at least from where I said, I don't see that. So
- 5:12what's the table that you're most surprised that you have to see that? Oh?
- 5:15Goodness, man, what a fuck you? What a good question?
- 5:21Like the most surprised I was surprised at how many people from the church were
- 5:30gracious of me and let me decide a word with this right. I was
- 5:35surprised at how many people from the church accepted me and the way I believe
- 5:39in Jesus. I knew there would be some blowback, and I got a
- 5:42lot of that. A lot of mega pastors wrote sun discernments about me and
- 5:45how I was, you know, hypocrisy or all that stuff. But I
- 5:48had way more mega church leaders and way more pastors and our servants of God
- 5:54reach out to me and go, man, we believe what you're doing is
- 5:57helping the Kingdom of God. We believe people are here the name Jesus for
- 6:00the first time because of you. We know you cuss, we know you
- 6:03smoke, we know you're a little wild, but like the message you're saying
- 6:06is right and we believe you. I didn't expect that. I expect you
- 6:11to be complete blowback from the church. So it was really really cool to
- 6:14have some real, real God fearing people back me up. Speaking of churches.
- 6:17Uh, that was deep, but that was the sorry, that was
- 6:20the real answer. No, I like it. Uh. With sit Chapel
- 6:24crazy successful, the album cover back up one second. People knowing who I
- 6:27was at the Grammys blew my mind to just like as a reference point,
- 6:30like such a country in Tennessee, driven dude that like to be all the
- 6:33way in California, and like real pop stars were like, we love you.
- 6:39Jelly Roll was really cool. My favorite is the face you have meeting
- 6:42Paul McCartney and Jay Z. You're like, your face says I don't belong
- 6:46here, but your smile is like I'm here anyway. Is that what's happening
- 6:51in the back door again? Baby? Take me to Witseit Chapel. Obviously
- 6:57it was massively, uh impactful in your life as a kid. We talked
- 7:00about that before. Uh what has the feedback been from that congregation because obviously,
- 7:06number one, you talk about it being a part of childhood. Number
- 7:09Two, I'd imagine it's a massive selfie spot for jelly World fans. Now,
- 7:13Oh yeah, there's a lot of pictures. They said they would come
- 7:15in and steal the Bibles, but the pastor was cool with it because the
- 7:17Bibles say Wits and Chapelin. He was like, Man, if we're giving
- 7:21away bibles here, we're doing great. They were really cool. I only
- 7:25hung out with them right after I named the album that because I felt like
- 7:28I owed it to them to go tell them what was up, even though
- 7:30by law it did and have to. I studied all that too, but
- 7:33I just wanted them to know. And they were really great people. Many
- 7:36were. The pastor was sweet, as sweet as it could be, and
- 7:39they didn't ask for anything. They just wanted to love on me. It
- 7:42was crazy, you know, you stumble into an old, little church like
- 7:44that, and I kind of expected a little like, hey, can we
- 7:46get you know, start kind of pouring it on what the church needed.
- 7:48But they were very specific about we don't want any money from you. We
- 7:53want you to always know you can come here on a Sunday and you can
- 7:56sit back here and nobody's gonna ask you for a picture, and you can
- 7:59just come be a part of our family and our church anytime you want to.
- 8:01And that meant a lot to me. You know. The problem is
- 8:03I haven't been home with two Sundays and three years. But you know what
- 8:07I mean, if I ever elm home on a Sunday, I'm gonna swing
- 8:09by Wits at chapel. Uh. You brought up Cinderella Man potentially being the
- 8:15name of the next album. It's one of the ideas. The other one
- 8:18is the beautifully I'm Gonna get so much from. Don't pick that one,
- 8:20but the beautifully Broken title that we called the tour. So we're torn between
- 8:26Cinderella Man and Beautifully Broken. I love beautifully Broken because that's what we named
- 8:28the tour and I just love that title. It's I think it epitomizes who
- 8:33I am and who my fans are, that we're kind of all here beautifully
- 8:37broken together. But man, Cinderella Man just feels so so me, you
- 8:41know, so, I don't know I'm telling it fits for some reason.
- 8:43My problem is I say Cinderella Man, and Wayne D's like, hell yeah.
- 8:46And I could have looked at Tay and been like, do you know
- 8:48what that reference is? And Tay would have been like no. But that's
- 8:50been my problem. Let it be. Let the people that know it on
- 8:54it and that let everybody else go on like some inside stuff. What do
- 8:58y'all think? Leave a comment? Pick my album title. Sure, there
- 9:01are going to be some people that says, oh, if he doesn't leave
- 9:03by midnight, he's gonna turn into a pumpkin or something. Already, impkin,
- 9:11You have so much great music out there. You have already uh some
- 9:15amazing collaborations. And as much as everyone wants deep thoughts and deep quotes on
- 9:20songs, I'm gonna go a different direction. Oh please, what is a
- 9:24line? Can I tell you? Some artists don't tell people. But we're
- 9:26friends. I can tell you. We hate talking about songs, and I
- 9:31try not to because when they're like, so tell us what the song's about,
- 9:33we're like, did you listen to it? You know what I mean?
- 9:35Halfway? Why am I explaining your song? You know what I'm saying.
- 9:39Hey, I love y'all too happy. I hope y'all are enjoying your
- 9:43Friday or Monday in Nashville. That's a good career right there, their day
- 9:46drinking Monday noon. Did I tell you? How? Did I tell you?
- 9:50Did I tell you how? This interview ends? You're gonna go sing
- 9:52on the stage out there? Stop it. I'll go out there right now,
- 9:58out there and sing a song. You're crazy? Hey, So back
- 10:01to the song question. Everybody praises your song, songs, your music.
- 10:05I love it. I love you, but there has to be a lyric
- 10:11or a line that you're like, this is cheesy, all right. I
- 10:13don't like this, but you left it anyway. That's the story. I
- 10:16want to hear. What's a lyric or a line that you're like, maybe
- 10:22it was too cheesy, or you're like that don't fit. But you I
- 10:24don't want to say you gave up, but you're like, no, I'm
- 10:26just gonna roll with that. Look, this is dracty sound language of me.
- 10:35I can't understand it. Sorry, this is so distracted. I'll give
- 10:39you one off the new album. I tease the song the other day called
- 10:41Liar. Yeah, it's not even out yet. I could probably still change
- 10:45it, and I might, but at the end of the chorus it goes,
- 10:48and now why I ain't scared of telling you where you can go?
- 10:50Because I know you know what I mean. I think it's dope, but
- 10:54it's also felt a little grannyish, like and now I'll tell you where you
- 10:58can go. I just feel like I should my finger and pointed people.
- 11:01We had one that we wrote one time behind the scenes that never got released.
- 11:05It could be the best song I never released. That was like run
- 11:07in emera thumb. We were rocking my shoes right, It's how it started,
- 11:13and I thought it was the greatest line ever but it made me feel
- 11:15like run in amerathumb we're rocking in my face like jazz hands, you know,
- 11:18like kind of like and I just could not hear it that way.
- 11:20Every time I sang it, I went and I was like, I can't
- 11:24put this out. I was like, I can't do it. When it
- 11:26comes to award shows, we obviously just saw you win another at the ACMs.
- 11:33I got to ask, at what point, and maybe the answer is
- 11:35never do you go from I can't believe this is happening, I'm just happy
- 11:39to be here to I worked my ass off, Yeah, this is what
- 11:43happens when you do that. Maybe I don't think it'll ever be like that.
- 11:45I'll always just be happy to be here, but I still have a
- 11:48lot of proving to do. I got really emotional with the ACMs because it
- 11:52was for save me. I could have won Entertainer of the Year and I
- 11:56might not have got that emotion, you know what I mean. But that
- 11:58song was truly the song that did it for me. Like that was like,
- 12:01oh thank you, because that was the song that a lot of the
- 12:05jelly roll people, like people that have known me a little while heard me
- 12:09the first time from that song in twenty twenty. You know what I mean,
- 12:11you talk about one of the guys that got you to start, Adrian
- 12:13Michaels, is that is that song? That is one of the That is
- 12:18the song that brought Adrian Michaels and Jonathan Lowe to my door. Every label
- 12:22in America called me when I dropped save Me, the first original version of
- 12:26any forgot to remember the original version of save Me was platinum, almost double
- 12:31platinum. Before Laney got on it. You were like, don't mess this
- 12:33up. Yeah, no, I didn't have to worry about that, dude.
- 12:37What I could have never predicted was I believed she was gonna be the
- 12:39biggest thing in country music. But man, I don't know if I've made
- 12:45a bet that right in my life, you know what I mean? Like
- 12:48I felt it and I was like, we should get her on it.
- 12:50She's awesome, My lover would have been friends, and I've known her a
- 12:52long time. She's got a great voice, a great story, she's a
- 12:54great human. This is a no brainer, and I think she's finna go
- 12:58be big in the next you know, five ten years. It ended up
- 13:01being the next fifteen months. She ended up being the biggest thing in country
- 13:03music. Well, I had a record with her. You want to talk
- 13:05about good luck for all those years of me having to eat poop, I
- 13:09had a horseshoe up my button. Boy, it showed when I needed it
- 13:13the most. You know what I mean? I could even now I got
- 13:16to say about this Inside Baseball my new album. I got a song.
- 13:18I'm trying to get a collab on a girl, and it's like the perfect
- 13:22song. The problem is every girl I think of. There's one girl in
- 13:24Nashville I want to do it with, but I haven't asked her because we're
- 13:28friends and I don't want to ruin our friendship. But I couldn't imagine it
- 13:31being too many other people because I've had Lanny Wilson before. I know what
- 13:35it's like to have the best duet partner ever, to have one on a
- 13:39rocket ship ride. I know what it's like to have a partner. Lanny
- 13:41Wilson sung that song with me at private shows, two hundred person shows,
- 13:48four thousand person bar shows, football stadiums, TV seven o'clock in the morning,
- 13:54seven at night, noon in the afternoon. Laney Wilson showed up every
- 13:58time we called her and asked her to sing that, you know what I
- 14:01mean, You can't ask for a better part. It's because y'all are team
- 14:03no sleep and no days off. Country music is more the lines are more
- 14:11invisible than ever, right, And maybe you should get credit for kicking some
- 14:16of that door down, at least part of it, because now we're talking
- 14:18to talking about names like Beyonce, Post Malone, Shaboozi obviously's track is gone
- 14:26Insane. What does it mean, number one, to be a part of
- 14:28whatever this new version of country is and to see those names, what are
- 14:33those people mean to you? Well, I think it's awesome, dude.
- 14:37I mean country music is pop music. Now. Country music is bigger than
- 14:43pop music, right, Like more people cared about Stage Coach this year than
- 14:46they cared about Coachello. This is like a fact. This isn't a disc
- 14:50This is love. I love pop. We all love pop. We're all
- 14:52big fans of pop. They're big fans of ours, obviously, you know
- 14:54what I mean. But to have like mega stars like post Malone, who
- 14:58is offen clear country too. He's gonna be on your new album, right
- 15:01man? I hope god I do anything to work with post That's my boy.
- 15:05Yeah, that's my boy. I would work with post Malone. No
- 15:09we uh, I would. I could only I can't talk about it.
- 15:13I would only have you got me in Trump. Fuck you Wayne, how
- 15:16about that? I'm not talking about it. Post Malone's my friend. I
- 15:18hope we do music together. How about that? You know what I'm saying.
- 15:22No, I love post Man and he he knows. He is a
- 15:26country music buff, like he really knows country music. Beyonce, Lonna del
- 15:31Ray. I just went out and sung with Lonna del Ray and hang out
- 15:35Fest the other day. It was the coolest thing ever. She loves the
- 15:37what's happening in country music. But the other side of that that I want
- 15:41to talk about. It's important. It's Tyler Chillers, Stergel Simpson, Zach
- 15:46Bryan, you know what I mean. And then you got Morgan Wallen.
- 15:48You know, really, let's be honest, dude, Morton Wallan did all
- 15:52this right, Like Morton Waller was just him and Zach Bryan just exploded in
- 15:54such a big way, you know, Like I'm glad that me and Hardy
- 15:58and Ernest get like a little bit of credit for that, you know what
- 16:02I'm saying. And it's like and we really don't deserve any at all,
- 16:03you know what I'm saying them due to the biggest artists on Earth man and
- 16:07the fact that their country and I got to be alive in this era.
- 16:10This has gotta be what it felt like to be around in the nineties.
- 16:12Yeah, right, Like could you like being a new artist with a couple
- 16:15of hits in the nineties and being like, I'm in the era where George
- 16:18Straight and Garth Brooks are king, where stadiums are getting sold right now,
- 16:22Like you're telling me there's country music artists right now selling out football stadiums.
- 16:27That's what was that? That's happening again right now, Like we're in the
- 16:30middle of how many stadium acts? Does country music really have? Five?
- 16:37Yeah? You got Kenny, you got Garth, you got Morgan Luke Combs.
- 16:41But I think that's it. But what was the package Stapleton was just
- 16:45on that went out all American roads? So but he did some arinas Straight
- 16:49George Straight, Ye, Straight can do a stadium still, dude, you're
- 16:52talking about you know what I mean? Caine did a stadium in Chattanooga.
- 16:56Yeah, it's you know, it's a great time. What Zach Bryan,
- 17:00Like, we're talking about a bunch of real This is crazy. What a
- 17:03time to be a part of country music. It's not like Beyonce technically,
- 17:08right, we can steal that one Taylor started in country music. Yeah right,
- 17:12you know what I mean? Post that dude's done stadiums. This is
- 17:17like, stop it, get out of here, y'all. The more I
- 17:18think abuse this clip, that is when people are like, this is so
- 17:22bad. I miss old country music. You're like, when fucking it wasn't
- 17:25the hottest thing on earth? What a hater? You know what I'm saying?
- 17:29Like this has got If I was an I am an old school country
- 17:30fan, but like if I was a real, like old school, old
- 17:36school country fan, I would be like blown away to see the seventies in
- 17:40the nineties come back. And if you think about it, it happens every
- 17:44twenty years. It happened in the seventies, came back in the nineties,
- 17:48two thousand. Tip. Think about how big Sam Hunt was when he exploded
- 17:51on the scene. That was a big crossover moment. Florida Georgia line.
- 17:53You skip every ten years and we get one. You know what I mean?
- 17:56Country music hotter than it's ever been. Dude, We're in the coolest
- 17:59place country music, and that we're not even be counting arena acts. We
- 18:02just talked about the stadium acts. Yeah, there's more. There's more stadium
- 18:07acts right now than there used to be arena actions and country music. And
- 18:10there's probably twelve arena acts and country music ten arena actions country music right now.
- 18:15It's absurd. It's absurd. There's more arena and stadium acts and country
- 18:19music to pop music right now. Oh that yeah, absolutely, let's talk
- 18:23about it. It's unreal with it. I'll die on that heel. Listen.
- 18:29I know that it is a travel to get down here, but you'd
- 18:32made it and we appreciate it. Why thank you. The travel is gonna
- 18:33be getting out of here. Y'all know I snuck in. Don't think I'm
- 18:37going to sneak out. Do you know what? The real challenge what y'all
- 18:41have in this place at the bar is I'm kind of like I kind of
- 18:44want a grilled chicken sandwich and a tequila. Well, I got to tequila
- 18:47here. We'll talk about you're not gonna You're not gonna blow my whole afternoon.
- 18:49Like we've done that. To me before. I'm a professional. Now
- 18:52you're not gonna talk, Bunny, and we apologize Bunny. Sorry. This
- 18:57is a big week. We're celebrating halfway to Hell. You would be nice.
- 19:00Love you brother, Love you brother,
