- 0:01People are always asking about the difference between
- 0:04spirituality and religion, as well as the difference between
- 0:09the mind and the spirit. The term spirit has been used in
- 0:14so many different ways and contexts that it is hard to
- 0:18comprehend exactly what is meant by it.
- 0:21When spiritual awakening is discussed, many people have no
- 0:25idea what that actually is. Sri Robindo has pointed out that
- 0:31spirituality is not a form of mental activity or power, that
- 0:35it is also not an emotional power or a vital or physical
- 0:39power. It is something other than all
- 0:42of the normal activities of body, life and mind.
- 0:48The Mother addressed this question with a very simple yet
- 0:52elegant response about the nature and role of spirit.
- 0:56A disciple asks what is the role of the Spirit?
- 1:02The Mother responds quote. One might say that it is both
- 1:07the conscious intermediary between the Supreme and the
- 1:11manifestation and the meeting place of the manifestation with
- 1:16the Supreme. Spirit is capable of
- 1:20understanding and communicating with the highest Godhead, and at
- 1:24the same time it is the Purest, one might say the least
- 1:29distorted intermediary of the Highest Godhead.
- 1:32In the outermost manifestation. It is Spirit which, with the
- 1:37help of the soul, turns the consciousness towards the
- 1:40Highest, the Divine, and it is in the Spirit that the
- 1:45consciousness can begin to understand the Divine.
- 1:50It might be said that what is called Spirit is the atmosphere
- 1:54brought into the material world by the grace, so that it may
- 1:58awaken to the consciousness of its origin and aspire to return
- 2:03to it. It is indeed a kind of
- 2:07atmosphere which liberates, opens the doors, sets the
- 2:11consciousness free. This is what enables the
- 2:15realization of the truth and gives aspiration its full power
- 2:20of accomplishment. From a higher standpoint, this
- 2:25could be put in another way. It is this action, this luminous
- 2:30and liberating influence that is known as spirit.
- 2:34All that opens to us the road to the supreme realities, pulls us
- 2:39out from the mud of the ignorance in which we are stuck,
- 2:43opens the doors to us, shows us the path, leads us to where we
- 2:48have to go. This is what man has called
- 2:51Spirit. It is the atmosphere created by
- 2:55the divine grace in the universe to save it from the darkness
- 3:01into which it has fallen. End Quote.
