- 0:45is because we have none
- 0:46other than six-time
- 0:48CrossFit Games champion
- 0:50Jason Grubb what's going on
- 0:51Jason uh not much
- 0:55Just kind of getting back
- 0:56into the swing of life
- 0:57after the games and then a
- 0:59much needed backpacking
- 1:01trip after the games with my two sons,
- 1:05two of the three of them.
- 1:07And and we my oldest son is twenty four.
- 1:11So and my brother in law went with us.
- 1:13So we committed to mustache
- 1:15only on the backpacking trip.
- 1:18And I kind of like it.
- 1:19So I just trimmed off, you know,
- 1:22a week's worth of stubble
- 1:23after the backpacking trip.
- 1:25And just to extend the life of this thing.
- 1:28I mean, it's kind of fun.
- 1:30And it's I mean,
- 1:31it's delightful to feel a
- 1:34little bit of skin on my face.
- 1:35I look terrible without a
- 1:36beard altogether.
- 1:37Just it's awful.
- 1:38It's not a go.
- 1:39So the mustache is fun.
- 1:41I'm getting a lot of
- 1:42compliments from people.
- 1:44Lots of people that have mustaches.
- 1:45So whatever.
- 1:46That's what's going on, Scott.
- 1:49That's the answer for now.
- 1:51Yeah.
- 1:51I don't know what it means
- 1:52when the only compliments
- 1:53you're getting are from
- 1:54other people with mustaches.
- 1:56I don't know.
- 1:58I don't know.
- 2:00My wife just laughs at me.
- 2:01I'm like, hey,
- 2:02you still like the mustaches?
- 2:03And she just laughs at me.
- 2:05So it's fun to change things up.
- 2:10And I'm shocking myself
- 2:11every time I look in the mirror.
- 2:12I'm like, oh, my God.
- 2:13That's right.
- 2:13I forgot I did this.
- 2:15So definitely not used to it,
- 2:17but but having fun with it.
- 2:18And it feels like offseason
- 2:19kind of things like, hey, you know,
- 2:21let's let's go with a
- 2:22mustache or go on a backpacking trip.
- 2:25But I mean, really, for me now,
- 2:27it's it's it's back to training.
- 2:29You know, as a master's athlete,
- 2:30it's you know,
- 2:31I don't see a lot of value
- 2:32in taking a significant
- 2:33amount of time off.
- 2:36I feel like it's too hard to get back.
- 2:40I can't take a month off.
- 2:41And in fact, my lifestyle,
- 2:42I still feel right if I'm
- 2:44not training most days a
- 2:49couple of times a day,
- 2:50a morning conditioning
- 2:51session and afternoon main session.
- 2:53When I'm in that rhythm,
- 2:54I feel more like myself.
- 2:55So that's really the stage
- 2:57of life that we're at.
- 2:58At the same time,
- 3:00I started back on Tuesday and I am sore.
- 3:04Really sore.
- 3:04So I'm not feeling like the
- 3:06fittest on earth right now.
- 3:08I'm feeling like the sorest
- 3:09dude on the planet.
- 3:10I can barely walk from just
- 3:12doing some squats on Wednesday.
- 3:14Not a big deal,
- 3:15but I'm in a chair and I'll
- 3:18be here all day or at least
- 3:20until my next training session.
- 3:22Yeah, yeah.
- 3:24What I love about the stash, us dudes,
- 3:26like women can change their
- 3:28hairstyles like every six months.
- 3:31They can do kind of stuff to
- 3:32change the look.
- 3:33As dudes,
- 3:34we don't have those options as much.
- 3:37And it's really,
- 3:38it comes down to facial hair.
- 3:40I just never had the thick
- 3:44like magnum mustache like you have.
- 3:47Like I could do the goatee
- 3:49cause mine's a little bit thinner.
- 3:51Um, and now mine's just all white.
- 3:53So now I just look like Santa, but,
- 3:57but you know, I, so I'm going to be,
- 3:59so you got the Thomas Magnum.
- 4:01Yeah.
- 4:04It takes work.
- 4:05It takes a lot of work.
- 4:06Uh, you know, actually,
- 4:07so two weeks before the games, you know,
- 4:10I,
- 4:10I went and got a haircut and I always
- 4:11get my beard trimmed and do all that, uh,
- 4:14with the same barber.
- 4:15I was like, Hey,
- 4:16I got to have a mustache
- 4:18like a week after the CrossFit games.
- 4:20And so he was like, okay,
- 4:20so we're not trimming the mustache.
- 4:22We're going to let that get
- 4:22a little bit thicker, uh,
- 4:24which is kind of fun.
- 4:25And then, um, and then, yeah.
- 4:27So,
- 4:28so at this point it's actually growing in,
- 4:29it takes,
- 4:30it takes the beard mustache is
- 4:32different than the actual mustache.
- 4:33The beard mustache is short, you know,
- 4:35it's all trimmed, but, um, yeah,
- 4:37this one is, um, it's legit.
- 4:39And, um,
- 4:41And getting thicker.
- 4:42In fact,
- 4:42I got a reach out from Fit to Surf.
- 4:46If you know Evan Slaughter,
- 4:47he's a bit of a comedian on
- 4:51Instagram and on X,
- 4:52and he does fun parodies of CrossFit.
- 4:55He's a bigger guy,
- 4:56so he likes to make jokes
- 4:58about being a guy who's –
- 5:01he always starts out his –
- 5:03reels or something like, you know,
- 5:05I've been trained for a
- 5:06marathon for about two weeks now.
- 5:07And then he goes into
- 5:09talking about how you
- 5:11should train for a marathon.
- 5:12He's just kind of one of those guys.
- 5:13And he has a gorgeous mustache.
- 5:16I mean, just a...
- 5:17you know, beautiful.
- 5:18He's,
- 5:18I think he's a guy that's had a
- 5:19mustache for a long time.
- 5:21And, uh, you know, he was like, Hey man,
- 5:23you got to let that grow out.
- 5:25You let it get thick.
- 5:26So it's, it's fun to get advice from, um,
- 5:29you know,
- 5:29respected mustache holders out there.
- 5:31And, and, uh, again,
- 5:34it's better than nothing.
- 5:36Nothing is not good.
- 5:37A full beard is fine.
- 5:39This is what we got going on now.
- 5:40And again,
- 5:41if I can make a few people smile
- 5:43because they're like, dude,
- 5:45You look ridiculous.
- 5:46That's fine.
- 5:47I'm okay with that for now.
- 5:50The beard will grow back.
- 5:51The beard was almost back this week,
- 5:53and I literally trimmed it
- 5:54just the other night just to, again,
- 5:56extend the lifespan of this
- 5:58monstrous mustache.
- 6:00All right,
- 6:02we're done with the mustache talk.
- 6:04I want to dive into a little
- 6:05bit of CrossFit.
- 6:05And literally about a minute
- 6:07and a half before we went on the air,
- 6:10the Barbell Spin released some news.
- 6:12And so I wanted to get your take on this.
- 6:16This won't be a lot of time,
- 6:17but I'm going to share my screen.
- 6:19And so CrossFit,
- 6:22Barbell Spin has announced
- 6:23that they have discovered
- 6:25that the big picture plan
- 6:28to be announced next week.
- 6:33What I would like to ask you is,
- 6:34do you think the age groups
- 6:37will be involved in this plan,
- 6:40or do you think it'll just
- 6:41be the elite CrossFit game season?
- 6:44Man, it's such a good question.
- 6:46I know that the Legends team
- 6:49is looking for consistency.
- 6:52I know that they – I mean,
- 6:54I don't know this,
- 6:55but after talking with them,
- 6:57I got a pretty good feeling
- 6:58that they would love to be
- 6:59in Columbus again.
- 7:02Like, you know, just out of consistency,
- 7:03like, you know,
- 7:04when they change cities every year,
- 7:06they've got to rebuild from
- 7:08scratch everything they're doing.
- 7:11If they could be in Columbus for two years,
- 7:12they could optimize, you know,
- 7:14year two in Columbus so much.
- 7:16So I know that would be a
- 7:17perfect scenario for them.
- 7:19At the same time,
- 7:21I'm leaning towards
- 7:23everything being together, everything,
- 7:25you know, being all in one place.
- 7:26You've got...
- 7:29the twentieth anniversary of
- 7:31the CrossFit Games starting, right?
- 7:33So this is the twentieth CrossFit Games.
- 7:35It's back in California,
- 7:36which is interesting, you know,
- 7:38with CrossFit having this
- 7:39idea of being able to go around the globe
- 7:42And yet now we're back in California.
- 7:44That feels like a return to home,
- 7:46a return to the roots.
- 7:48A few weeks ago, Dave,
- 7:50on his Week in Review,
- 7:52he answered three or four
- 7:54questions in a row.
- 7:55And he's the one that picks
- 7:56the comments that he responds to, right?
- 7:59And he mentioned three or
- 8:00four of them in a row about people saying,
- 8:02hey, I wish everyone was back together.
- 8:05Love the festival feel.
- 8:07And he didn't hint anything.
- 8:08He said, yeah, you know,
- 8:09we really like that.
- 8:10It's always something we can consider.
- 8:11Even if we don't do it in the longterm,
- 8:14we could do something altogether.
- 8:15He talked about the complications of that,
- 8:17of course, being that when they do that,
- 8:19they almost have to rent
- 8:20two weekends at a location.
- 8:22So they've got the prep work
- 8:23of the weekend before,
- 8:24then they might have age
- 8:25groups and adaptive, you know,
- 8:27maybe go first during the
- 8:28week and then the elites go
- 8:30later in the week and the teams.
- 8:32So he talked about some of
- 8:32those logistical complications, but yeah,
- 8:36He didn't rule it out,
- 8:37and he brought it up.
- 8:38I mean, he answered that question,
- 8:41and he answered it three or
- 8:43four times or at least said
- 8:44that three or four
- 8:44questions were about that,
- 8:45and that gives me kind of a
- 8:47bit of a hint there.
- 8:48The other thing that I found
- 8:49interesting was at our CrossFit,
- 8:51at the age group games,
- 8:52and I know you were there,
- 8:54we saw Don Fowle, we saw Castro,
- 8:56we saw Adrian Bosman,
- 8:58which Castro and Bosman
- 8:59should be popping in,
- 9:00but to see Don Fowle there
- 9:01as well and a lot of the
- 9:04CrossFit Games team,
- 9:06I know they were having
- 9:07meetings on site there.
- 9:09And it makes me curious
- 9:11about the potential of
- 9:13of them getting a feel for
- 9:15how this comp is run, you know,
- 9:17really eyes on the scene of how it's run,
- 9:19how the Legends team is running it.
- 9:21And I think that leans me
- 9:23towards this idea that even for one year,
- 9:26for the twentieth anniversary, you know,
- 9:28kind of a bigger push,
- 9:29a bigger celebration,
- 9:30they could unify all of the teams,
- 9:33the Wheelwod team, the Legends team,
- 9:36and the CrossFit team,
- 9:37and have all three teams
- 9:39working on a similar site all together
- 9:42without making promises that
- 9:44this is how we will always be.
- 9:45So I have a feeling that
- 9:48we'll all be in California next week.
- 9:49Again,
- 9:52I talk with the Legends team quite a bit.
- 9:55We are the title sponsor or
- 9:57the programming sponsor for
- 9:58the Legends Championships.
- 9:59We have lots of conversations around that,
- 10:01but I will tell you that
- 10:02they are very compartmentalized.
- 10:04We don't get any secrets.
- 10:07They are very good at not
- 10:09sharing things that they can't share.
- 10:12Um, but I, I mean,
- 10:14I'm maybe part of that is a
- 10:17hope that we're all together.
- 10:17Like that would be, would be really fun.
- 10:20And I think they could pull
- 10:22it off in a more efficient way.
- 10:25Having these two outsource
- 10:27teams that have ran their
- 10:28own CrossFit games for the past two years,
- 10:31you know,
- 10:31they're all collaborating together.
- 10:32They're all using the
- 10:35efficiencies of scale, right?
- 10:36So, you know,
- 10:38you have all the rogue equipment there.
- 10:40for the elite in the teams.
- 10:42And then you just have the
- 10:43age group and adaptive use
- 10:44that early runs.
- 10:45I mean, like they used to do.
- 10:47So, I mean, I could be totally wrong.
- 10:52If I was a betting person, I would bet,
- 10:54you know,
- 10:56I'd say there's a probably like
- 10:58a fifty five to sixty
- 11:00percent chance they're all together.
- 11:02And I hedge my bet because
- 11:04there is every time I
- 11:06predicted what I think
- 11:07CrossFit is going to do,
- 11:08they do something
- 11:10you know,
- 11:10very different than what I think.
- 11:11So that's where I'm hedging it.
- 11:13But I think that I think it
- 11:14will be unified for a
- 11:16twenty year celebration anniversary.
- 11:20I think that could be big.
- 11:23Your thoughts, what do you think?
- 11:25So selfishly,
- 11:27I would love for it to be
- 11:27back in Columbus because
- 11:28that's where I live.
- 11:30This was the easiest event
- 11:32for me to cover ever as I
- 11:36got to sleep in my own bed every night.
- 11:38And I thought that Columbus
- 11:41offered so much more than
- 11:43most events offer around the venue.
- 11:47It was a big space.
- 11:49There was five hundred
- 11:50restaurants right outside the door,
- 11:52like plenty of places to
- 11:54eat for everybody.
- 11:57My only complaint with
- 11:58Columbus is I thought the
- 11:59ticket prices were too high
- 12:01and then there's not enough
- 12:02butts in the seats for the vendors.
- 12:05I think you lower the ticket price,
- 12:07you get more butts in the seats,
- 12:08you up the amount of
- 12:09vendors that are willing to
- 12:10come in because the number
- 12:11of people grows,
- 12:13and you get your revenue
- 12:14from vendors as opposed to spectators.
- 12:19But I do also,
- 12:20I've been fighting that I
- 12:21think the only way CrossFit
- 12:23can succeed is to build
- 12:25back up with the festival feel.
- 12:29I think it has to go back to
- 12:30the festival feel.
- 12:31So from a non-selfish point of view,
- 12:36I do think it's better if
- 12:37they're all in one place.
- 12:39You get to sell those
- 12:40festival tickets at under a
- 12:41hundred dollars for people to come in,
- 12:44watch together at the beer garden,
- 12:45watch together on the big screens.
- 12:48And then those who want to
- 12:49pay the upper price to go
- 12:50into a Coliseum to watch
- 12:53the finals of events or whatever,
- 12:56they can choose to do so.
- 12:58Um, I also, yeah, so I do.
- 13:02I like the idea of the festival feel back.
- 13:05I hope it's more than just
- 13:06the twentieth anniversary.
- 13:08I don't think we're ready to go overseas.
- 13:10I think in our head we think
- 13:11we're bigger than we are.
- 13:13And I think we have to grow
- 13:15it back before we even
- 13:17think about going overseas at this point.
- 13:20Yeah.
- 13:20I mean, I agree.
- 13:21I think the enthusiasm overseas is,
- 13:24is amazing.
- 13:25And if they were to do something like that,
- 13:27they would fill stadiums.
- 13:29Uh, but, but I agree with you.
- 13:30I don't,
- 13:31I don't think that the sport is
- 13:32mature enough or quite ready for that.
- 13:34And, uh,
- 13:36Yeah, I agree.
- 13:39The Masters games were in
- 13:40Alabama last year, Birmingham.
- 13:42I got to sleep in my own bed
- 13:43in twenty twenty four.
- 13:44And that was nice.
- 13:46And I did very much like Columbus.
- 13:48I would love going back there.
- 13:50But California is actually
- 13:52kind of a pain to get there
- 13:53from where I'm at.
- 13:55But I'll go.
- 13:56I mean, I'm a fan.
- 13:57I'm a fan of the sport.
- 13:58And I think.
- 13:59I think one of the biggest
- 14:00challenges when CrossFit
- 14:01broke apart the festival
- 14:05field and they broke this
- 14:05off into these branches,
- 14:07a couple of things happened.
- 14:08On one hand,
- 14:10vendors that had multi-year
- 14:11contracts really got hammered by that.
- 14:16You would typically have
- 14:17so... When you have
- 14:20um, masters adaptive, you know,
- 14:22you've got five hundred athletes just,
- 14:23I'll just talk about age groups, you know,
- 14:24five hundred age group
- 14:25athletes plus their
- 14:26families and a good amount
- 14:28of them staying into the indie event,
- 14:30you have that much more
- 14:31foot traffic for vendors.
- 14:33And so when you have vendors
- 14:34that have spent hundreds of
- 14:35thousands of dollars to
- 14:36build these huge massive booths and these,
- 14:38you know, these activations,
- 14:40and then you cut the
- 14:41attendance significantly.
- 14:43Dallas, the attendance was,
- 14:45was very different than
- 14:47what I experienced in, um,
- 14:50or port worth I'm sorry was
- 14:51was very different than
- 14:52madison and albany I think
- 14:54was was quite small as well
- 14:56I couldn't get up to albany
- 14:57this year um so you know
- 14:59you have vendors that were
- 15:00really uh frustrated by
- 15:02that I know I know some of
- 15:03the sponsors I've worked
- 15:05with had some big
- 15:06frustrations there on the
- 15:07other hand when we did
- 15:08separate that into individual categories
- 15:12For Masters, last year,
- 15:14I could have a booth for
- 15:16Boulder Athlete in our
- 15:17first year sponsoring anything.
- 15:19We could have a booth at the
- 15:20Masters Games and afford it.
- 15:23So we didn't pay a hundred
- 15:24thousand dollars to have a
- 15:25booth last year.
- 15:27This year,
- 15:27our booth was three times the
- 15:30investment than it was last year,
- 15:31but we were happy to invest
- 15:34in organizations and
- 15:35situations that are investing in Masters.
- 15:37So whether it be the Legends
- 15:38Championship or the Masters Games,
- 15:41we're there.
- 15:42When it's all together,
- 15:45that vendor fee and that
- 15:47vendor location becomes
- 15:49somewhat out of range for
- 15:52small companies like us.
- 15:53So I do like that we can
- 15:57bring Boulder Athlete to
- 15:58our specific target demographic,
- 16:01Masters athletes.
- 16:02So we like all that.
- 16:05So the man who broke the
- 16:06story is in the chat.
- 16:08Barbell spin.
- 16:09Can all the divisions fit
- 16:11inside the Chase Center?
- 16:12And I think you said it
- 16:14would be one weekend of
- 16:16Masters Adaptive into
- 16:18another weekend of Elites,
- 16:20I think is the only way it would work.
- 16:23Yeah, I think that or, you know,
- 16:24historically what they've
- 16:25done is they have masters go Tuesday,
- 16:27Wednesday, Thursday,
- 16:28and they have the elite go Thursday,
- 16:30Friday, Saturday, Sunday, or Friday,
- 16:31Saturday, Sunday, just like that.
- 16:33I mean,
- 16:33they have three days during the
- 16:34week of us, which is not optimal,
- 16:37but it's fine.
- 16:38Like, I mean,
- 16:38we're already taking a week
- 16:39off from whatever our lives are anyway.
- 16:41So, you know, three days of masters,
- 16:44age group adaptive,
- 16:46and then three days of indie and elite.
- 16:50The challenge certainly is,
- 16:52when you're,
- 16:53when you're working with masters, um,
- 16:54and they did this in Madison,
- 16:55they worked it out just fine.
- 16:57And again,
- 16:57they had Northfield and the stadium, uh,
- 17:00or the Coliseum.
- 17:01Right.
- 17:02And with masters athletes,
- 17:03you have something like.
- 17:05Fourteen different divisions, uh, you know,
- 17:09between to all the way up
- 17:11to male and female.
- 17:14This is a huge amount of athletes.
- 17:16And one of the concerns
- 17:18me is that when they
- 17:19consolidate this they cut
- 17:22the qualifiers you know the
- 17:23amount of people way down
- 17:25at one point we were you
- 17:26know we had ten per
- 17:28division um male and female
- 17:30at the games this was you
- 17:32know I think just one of
- 17:35the twenty twenty twenty
- 17:36three twenty four I can't
- 17:37remember which ones but um
- 17:39when we do have our own
- 17:41uh competition we can have
- 17:43thirty to forty in each
- 17:43division and that's
- 17:45significant so my biggest
- 17:47concern is like can we get
- 17:50a similar experience that
- 17:51we have with this many
- 17:52qualifiers this many
- 17:53athletes able to
- 17:54participate at the crossfit
- 17:55games like a dream come
- 17:56true situation for them in
- 17:59this in the chase center
- 18:00and maybe that you know
- 18:01maybe that goes back to
- 18:02what you said maybe it is
- 18:03two weekends actually maybe
- 18:05they just bite the bullet
- 18:06and they do it into
- 18:07completely unique weekends
- 18:10um the the glitch with that
- 18:11so from a business
- 18:12perspective now that I say
- 18:13that less chances yeah yeah
- 18:16yeah exactly yeah the
- 18:18carryover doesn't work but
- 18:19tuesday wednesday thursday
- 18:20then friday saturday sunday
- 18:22there's nothing better for
- 18:24most of us athletes to
- 18:26compete earlier in the week
- 18:27than sitting back and enjoying the,
- 18:30watching the Indies go right.
- 18:32We've, our competition is done.
- 18:34We've got our medals or, you know,
- 18:35we're sore.
- 18:36We're walking around,
- 18:36but we are there to watch
- 18:38the Indies battle it out and, and,
- 18:41and do that.
- 18:42So I, yeah, the chase center,
- 18:44I have no idea, but,
- 18:47I mean, if,
- 18:48if they can do our competition with eight,
- 18:50with and you were there
- 18:52with teenagers and masters
- 18:55athletes in one floor of a
- 18:58convention center.
- 18:59And really you were,
- 19:00we had three competition floors.
- 19:01I think they had four competition boards,
- 19:03but they consolidated it to three.
- 19:06We, they can figure it out.
- 19:07It's not hard.
- 19:08And we can still have a
- 19:10competition like we had,
- 19:11which was incredibly
- 19:12well-rounded this year
- 19:13compared to last year.
- 19:15So it's doable.
- 19:19Sean in Oregon asked a question.
- 19:21Would it be,
- 19:22would be cool if everyone had
- 19:24the same workout so we
- 19:25could see apples to apples
- 19:26comparisons of performance
- 19:28scaled appropriately?
- 19:29Of course.
- 19:31That'd be amazing.
- 19:32We'd love that.
- 19:34I think the one problem
- 19:35you're going to run into
- 19:35with CrossFit is they want
- 19:36to keep something secret for the elites.
- 19:38And if you do it,
- 19:40if you do it ahead of time,
- 19:42then they know, but you could do,
- 19:44I know the swim workout from what,
- 19:47at the pool where everybody
- 19:49did the exact same workout.
- 19:50It was cool to compare the numbers,
- 19:52even if they did a handful
- 19:54or two or three,
- 19:56it would be a cool
- 19:57experiment to kind of totally agree.
- 20:00In in twenty nineteen,
- 20:01we did the we did the the
- 20:03the ruck run where Matt
- 20:05Frazier lost a sandbag out of his ruck.
- 20:07That was right.
- 20:08We did the exact same weights.
- 20:10We did the exact same run.
- 20:11So that was super cool.
- 20:12I'm trying to think any other.
- 20:14I mean, we did.
- 20:15We all did the swim.
- 20:16Every division did the swim.
- 20:17And that was really cool.
- 20:18They could.
- 20:19I always feel like they
- 20:20should have they should
- 20:21have one or two that have
- 20:23all that crossover to.
- 20:26in essence,
- 20:26create this unified experience.
- 20:28Like all CrossFit Games
- 20:30athletes are doing this.
- 20:33And it would be so easy to do that.
- 20:34And who cares if the cat's
- 20:37out of the bag that we're
- 20:38all doing a seven K run or
- 20:39a run row run or some sort
- 20:42of version like that, right?
- 20:46Yeah.
- 20:46I think you could do it more
- 20:48CrossFit-y than we've ever done it.
- 20:50It's always been like the swim or the run.
- 20:53Yeah.
- 20:53Wouldn't it be cool if you
- 20:55all did thrusters and
- 20:58chest-to-bar pull-ups, right?
- 21:00It's the same.
- 21:00Well...
- 21:01You know, I'm actually remembering.
- 21:02So there's two other
- 21:04versions of CrossFit
- 21:05workouts that we did do.
- 21:06I think it was twenty twenty one.
- 21:08We finished with wall walks and thrusters.
- 21:13So we did ten, eight, six, four, two.
- 21:15I think the Indies did a
- 21:16version of that that day.
- 21:17It wasn't their final workout,
- 21:18but it was a workout.
- 21:19Dave announced it during
- 21:21opening ceremonies and they did ten,
- 21:22ten all the way to one wall
- 21:24walks and thrusters.
- 21:25That was fun because that
- 21:27felt very unifying.
- 21:28It was our last day.
- 21:29It was the Indies first day, I believe.
- 21:32and then um we did Helen and
- 21:35the indies did Helena and
- 21:37we should have done Helena
- 21:38that would have been if
- 21:39that's even how we
- 21:40pronounce it that was Helen
- 21:42was fine but it was is very
- 21:44hard to judge um we could
- 21:46have totally done that
- 21:48version of the workout as
- 21:49Masters ours was a little
- 21:50dumbed down but um I PR'd
- 21:53my four hundred meter run
- 21:53three times in Helen so
- 21:55that was that was fun
- 21:59Yeah, that's awesome, actually.
- 22:01Gosh, so many places to go from this.
- 22:04But anyway, so not only are you an athlete,
- 22:10but you own Boulder Athlete,
- 22:12which is pretty much,
- 22:14for lack of better terminology,
- 22:16the biggest training camp
- 22:17in the Masters Division.
- 22:20Why did you create Boulder?
- 22:23And then we'll get into some other things.
- 22:26Yeah,
- 22:27I certainly didn't set out to create
- 22:29Boulder.
- 22:31I was with another training
- 22:34camp at the time,
- 22:36and I really felt like we
- 22:41could lean into Masters
- 22:42more if we had a dedicated
- 22:44resource with this
- 22:46particular training camp.
- 22:48And those that know me can deduce it.
- 22:50I'm not pointing fingers at anyone,
- 22:51because I'll share more in this story.
- 22:54you know, I, I, I was actually,
- 22:55we were living in our RV.
- 22:57We were,
- 22:57we were traveling full-time as a family.
- 22:59And at that time we had spent a few months,
- 23:02uh, at this particular, uh,
- 23:03training camp and,
- 23:04and lots of conversations around,
- 23:06like if we had a dedicated
- 23:07asset for masters athletes,
- 23:09we can really do something
- 23:11important and impactful, um, you know,
- 23:14really make masters that we
- 23:15could grow this masters
- 23:16athlete community if there
- 23:17was a dedicated resource.
- 23:18And with that, you know,
- 23:20a way to support that resource, um,
- 23:23like via a salary or
- 23:25anything like I'll just say
- 23:26that it was a you know
- 23:27asking for a bit of a
- 23:28salary or something so that
- 23:30I was proposing I would do
- 23:32that for this training camp
- 23:33and what that would mean
- 23:33that I would stop doing
- 23:34everything else I'm doing
- 23:36um and dedicate everything to that and um
- 23:42hoping in that sense that
- 23:43there would be some media
- 23:44support and there would be
- 23:45some some team support this
- 23:47is a very large very large
- 23:48training camp and uh it it
- 23:52it came back to you know
- 23:54hey you know jason we we
- 23:55would love to do that and
- 23:57we would love to give you
- 23:57five percent of of new
- 24:00revenue growth and I was like
- 24:03I mean,
- 24:04it's just literally starting from
- 24:05scratch.
- 24:06Literally, hey, you know, Jason,
- 24:07set aside everything you're doing.
- 24:09Start from absolute scratch.
- 24:11And then we'll grow this.
- 24:12And it was just the math
- 24:14didn't work for me.
- 24:15And that was okay.
- 24:17I was like, okay.
- 24:18So at the same time,
- 24:20I actually talked with a couple of other
- 24:22of the biggest training camps.
- 24:24Just saying, is this a harebrained idea?
- 24:26Is this a good idea or a bad idea?
- 24:28And a few other training camps were like,
- 24:30yeah, this is a great idea.
- 24:31This is a market that needs
- 24:33dedicated resources.
- 24:34And I was like, let's do it.
- 24:38I'm ready to jump in.
- 24:41And
- 24:42whether or not I was the guy
- 24:43that I got essentially the
- 24:45same kind of offers like, Hey, we would,
- 24:48we'd love to do this.
- 24:49We're all in on this.
- 24:50We would love to give you, you know,
- 24:51starting from scratch, but, but, you know,
- 24:53a little bit of revenue based on growth.
- 24:55And again, that's not,
- 24:58I wasn't seeking the world.
- 24:59It's just, it just wasn't the right fit.
- 25:00None of those were the right scenarios.
- 25:02And that was a good thing at the time.
- 25:04And I,
- 25:04I mean, just as you're saying that,
- 25:06like if you're putting all
- 25:07that work in from scratch,
- 25:09why would you want to do
- 25:11that for someone else when
- 25:13you could do the same thing on your own?
- 25:15That's correct.
- 25:17And my biggest fear,
- 25:18my biggest fear at the time
- 25:20was I don't know how to program.
- 25:24Like, I don't know.
- 25:25I know how to take a program
- 25:26and make it fit for me.
- 25:27Right.
- 25:28I know how to make
- 25:28adjustments to ensure my longevity,
- 25:31pay attention to my body
- 25:32like I've been doing.
- 25:34you know,
- 25:34competitive CrossFit training for
- 25:35long enough, you know,
- 25:36going through way back to,
- 25:39to comp train individuals
- 25:40where I just killed myself
- 25:41to comp train masters to make him masters,
- 25:43whatever.
- 25:44So I knew how to adapt
- 25:46things to to myself.
- 25:48But I didn't know how to,
- 25:49to program from scratch.
- 25:51And
- 25:52Um, I did have a friend at the time and,
- 25:55uh, he was overseas.
- 25:56We just, you know,
- 25:57virtual somehow a relationship forms over,
- 26:00you know, Instagram and then turns into,
- 26:02we're sending messages to,
- 26:03we're sending voice messages.
- 26:05And then we're like, Hey,
- 26:06he had a lot of programming
- 26:07experience and he could help with this.
- 26:08I was like, all right, let's, let's, um,
- 26:10that would be good.
- 26:11I had another friend that was willing to,
- 26:13um, provide, uh, as a partnership,
- 26:17some financial backing to
- 26:18get us off the ground.
- 26:19Um,
- 26:20And so I decided, I was like, hey,
- 26:22I'm going to make the leap
- 26:24and start Boulder Athlete.
- 26:26So it literally,
- 26:27I remember like driving
- 26:28down the highway with my wife,
- 26:29we were going from one
- 26:31location to another location.
- 26:31It was like, we really liked this idea of,
- 26:33I used to say, get bolder, not older.
- 26:35It was just something,
- 26:36one of my catchphrases, right?
- 26:37And we're like, Boulder Athlete.
- 26:39Well, that's kind of fun.
- 26:40Let's see if that domain is available.
- 26:42So we reserved all of them,
- 26:43Boulder Athlete, Boulder Nutrition,
- 26:44Boulder Coach, Boulder, whatever.
- 26:46We reserved all of them on the road, like
- 26:49My wife was doing it on her
- 26:50phone while we were driving,
- 26:51as if the thought would
- 26:53cause someone else in the
- 26:54world to snap up those
- 26:55domains really quick.
- 26:56But we just bought them all.
- 26:57And my business partner, Adam,
- 27:03was like hey we can do this
- 27:04he's he's run and sold a
- 27:06couple of businesses he's
- 27:07he's uh he's in his early
- 27:09forties he's retired and he
- 27:11was looking for a project
- 27:12he's he's really a great um
- 27:15chief operating officer
- 27:16that's that's what we
- 27:17consider him in our
- 27:17business and um we decided
- 27:19to do it let's let's do
- 27:20this thing and so I had my
- 27:21pro this is a long side
- 27:23note but I had my
- 27:23programmer overseas I was
- 27:24like all right he's gonna
- 27:25program everything's gonna
- 27:26be fine and when we
- 27:28launched at the games in
- 27:32I wasn't getting the best
- 27:34vibes from my friend overseas.
- 27:39He was wanting a significant
- 27:41amount of equity and it
- 27:42just wasn't working out.
- 27:42I was like, look,
- 27:45if I'm going to be the face
- 27:46of Boulder Athlete,
- 27:47I have to be in charge of the product.
- 27:51The product is the programming.
- 27:52I mean,
- 27:53it is supported by our community and
- 27:55And all of the things we
- 27:56have now that make Boulder Athlete great.
- 27:59I mean,
- 27:59our community is our strongest resource.
- 28:01We have an incredible community.
- 28:03But when it comes down to it,
- 28:05the product is the programming.
- 28:06And it's got to be stellar.
- 28:08And I need to know that in
- 28:09and out as a founder.
- 28:10So a week after the twenty
- 28:13twenty three games,
- 28:14I am the programmer for
- 28:15Boulder Athlete and I am
- 28:18totally over my head.
- 28:20So, you know,
- 28:21the first the first thirty
- 28:23athletes that signed up for
- 28:24Boulder Athlete in that first week.
- 28:26they were doing way too much
- 28:28volume from the get-go I
- 28:30would just I was learning
- 28:31on the fly and um there a
- 28:33lot of them are still with
- 28:34us and and I could talk
- 28:35about it now and we all
- 28:36laugh like dude we were
- 28:38killing ourselves but I
- 28:39very very quickly I became
- 28:40a student of programming of
- 28:43of of what it was that was
- 28:46good for me the best parts
- 28:48of what I had learned over the years
- 28:50And within six months,
- 28:52I think we had programming very,
- 28:54very dialed in for masters athletes.
- 28:57And now, you know, just over two years in,
- 29:01I think we have the best
- 29:02programming on the market for masters.
- 29:04I mean, I don't,
- 29:05question that at all um so
- 29:09it's a lot of iterations
- 29:10let me get some context in
- 29:12here because you and I sat
- 29:13and talked at legends I
- 29:15think it was and your wife
- 29:19was your media director and
- 29:21team I think all in one yep
- 29:23um you had a handful of
- 29:26athletes um competing there that day
- 29:30Fast forward to the games this year,
- 29:32you have a massive booth
- 29:34with recovery tools and you
- 29:37have commercials running
- 29:39during the broadcast.
- 29:40You have grown significantly
- 29:43in those two years.
- 29:48There's a question in the chat.
- 29:49How big is Boulder now?
- 29:51We're over seven hundred athletes now.
- 29:55Dang, that is impressive.
- 29:59Yeah, we're very excited.
- 30:01Our goal at the end of the
- 30:02year is is eight hundred.
- 30:04I think we're going to I
- 30:05think we'll surpass that.
- 30:07And, you know,
- 30:07if we could get to a
- 30:08thousand athletes by the end of the year,
- 30:09that would be be really, really great.
- 30:13Really great.
- 30:15And you're right, in, in, in, in, in, in,
- 30:17in, in, in, in, in, in, in, in, in, in,
- 30:19in, in, in, in, in, in, in, in, in, in,
- 30:20in, in, in, in, in,
- 30:43But we've been scrappy since day one.
- 30:45You know,
- 30:45in twenty twenty four at the
- 30:47Masters Games, we had our first booth.
- 30:50And I remember, you know,
- 30:52I've got this small team with me.
- 30:54Now our leadership team team is me,
- 30:57you know, Adam, Josh and Aaron.
- 30:59You know, these are all three tech guys.
- 31:02They're, you know, high level tech guys.
- 31:04But remember when we were
- 31:06putting the booth together for that,
- 31:07we had written a check and we're like,
- 31:09we're doing a booth at the games.
- 31:11what do we do and I could
- 31:13think it was like well
- 31:14we'll do re recovery I
- 31:15think that makes sense
- 31:16we'll do kind of a recovery
- 31:17booth so in twenty twenty
- 31:18four we had uh uh penguin
- 31:20chillers came out and they they brought
- 31:23you know, ice barrel couldn't commit,
- 31:25but penguin chillers
- 31:25brought their own ice barrel,
- 31:27their own chillers.
- 31:28We rent, we reached out to Norma tech.
- 31:30They sent us some boots and, and stuff.
- 31:33We've, we own all that stuff now.
- 31:35Um, but,
- 31:36and we served coffee and there was, uh,
- 31:38there were a lot of
- 31:39athletes thought we were a
- 31:40coffee company because we
- 31:41were giving away coffee.
- 31:42And, um,
- 31:44Anyway, we learned from that.
- 31:46But I remember that being
- 31:47the most stressful part of
- 31:49the games in twenty twenty
- 31:50four was the fact that none
- 31:51of us knew how to how to
- 31:53run a booth or do anything like that.
- 31:55And my business partners at the time,
- 31:56I was like, guys,
- 31:57I really need help with this.
- 31:58And they were all like,
- 31:59we don't know what we're doing.
- 32:00I'm like, okay, I guess I'll take it.
- 32:03And we did.
- 32:03So we had a booth there.
- 32:04We had a booth at legends, twenty,
- 32:06twenty four.
- 32:06And then now in twenty, twenty five,
- 32:09we learn quickly.
- 32:10We've learned as a team
- 32:11really quickly how to take
- 32:13care of our athletes.
- 32:13And if you were at our booth,
- 32:16what was great is you have Adam there,
- 32:19you know, all, you know,
- 32:21you're putting boots on all athletes,
- 32:23not just Boulder athletes,
- 32:24helping people in and out of booth boots.
- 32:27Um,
- 32:27we have the chiller people there all day,
- 32:30every day, um,
- 32:32making sure that everybody
- 32:33can get in the cold pledges.
- 32:35It was super busy.
- 32:37And I loved that feeling.
- 32:39I loved walking by our own
- 32:40booth and having it feel
- 32:42like when you walk by an
- 32:43Apple store at a mall.
- 32:45You're like, how is it so busy in there?
- 32:48You know, a sense of pride in that.
- 32:50For me, this Games was like,
- 32:51I was all out focused.
- 32:53So I'd walk by the booth,
- 32:54I'd wave at everyone on my
- 32:55way to the hotel room to recover.
- 32:58You saw how serious I was.
- 32:59I was really...
- 33:00he's very serious at these
- 33:01games and um but but our
- 33:04team our team is is huge
- 33:07it's we I couldn't do this
- 33:08by myself um I am a
- 33:10visionary I'm the guy that
- 33:12um I could easily chase you
- 33:14know sparkly things uh but
- 33:16I bring a lot to my team
- 33:17and they help us the team
- 33:20every time we meet once a
- 33:21week we focus we get things
- 33:23done um and we execute very
- 33:25quickly and we we say yes to
- 33:27you know every every
- 33:28fastball over the plate
- 33:30that gives us an
- 33:31opportunity to support
- 33:32masters athletes we say yes
- 33:35and some of them are
- 33:35strikeouts some of them are
- 33:37are not are you know home
- 33:39runs and I think our booth
- 33:40this year was a home run um and
- 33:44Our athletes are responding.
- 33:46But we have athletes that
- 33:47are joining because they
- 33:49had a great time at the games.
- 33:50They haven't even tested the programming,
- 33:54which, trust me, is very, very good.
- 33:56But they're like, yeah,
- 33:57we just love how you
- 33:57supported us at the games.
- 33:58And that's exactly what we
- 34:01intend to continue to do.
- 34:03What I want to point out at
- 34:04the twenty four games.
- 34:08the sponsor that was
- 34:09supposed to supply cold
- 34:10tubs and recovery stuff
- 34:12fell through for the people
- 34:14doing the games.
- 34:15And your team offered up
- 34:17your booth and your
- 34:18recovery tools to the
- 34:20entire group of Masters athletes.
- 34:23Not just older athletes,
- 34:25but everybody at the venue,
- 34:28which I thought was super
- 34:29cool of you guys to do.
- 34:32And just shows the type of people you are.
- 34:36Yeah,
- 34:36we will love people whether they go
- 34:41with us or not.
- 34:42Some people have been
- 34:43with... We'll just use an
- 34:46example like Invictus.
- 34:47People have been... They're so loyal.
- 34:50And that's totally fine with us.
- 34:52We're not trying to steal people.
- 34:56We just want to support masters.
- 34:58If that turns into clients
- 35:00over the long run, that's great.
- 35:02But when it comes down to it,
- 35:03we want to see this...
- 35:05this uh this group of men
- 35:07and women thrive for the
- 35:10long run um I you know you
- 35:12you go to the masters games
- 35:13and you watch watch these
- 35:15athletes compete of all
- 35:16ages like you know we I
- 35:17love watching scott panchik
- 35:19and con porter battle it
- 35:20out as like these are it's
- 35:22just ogs crushing it like
- 35:24that's super exciting and I
- 35:26also love watching marie
- 35:28one of our athletes in the
- 35:29sixty plus you know just
- 35:32just struggling and hit on
- 35:34every snatch in that last workout.
- 35:36Like,
- 35:37but with this like resolved that she's,
- 35:39she's going to do this.
- 35:40And this is a heavy,
- 35:42I think it was ninety five
- 35:43pounds or something for sixty plus women.
- 35:45Like it's a heavy snatch.
- 35:47And, um,
- 35:48I mean,
- 35:48I get just as excited watching that.
- 35:50And we want to continue to
- 35:52see that happen and foster
- 35:55that as much as we can.
- 35:57We know that that'll pay
- 35:58dividends in the future for business.
- 35:59That's fine.
- 36:00But really,
- 36:01it just feels good and it feels
- 36:03right to be supporting businesses.
- 36:07masters athletes where
- 36:08they're competing and and
- 36:09we you know we mfc is
- 36:10coming up in a couple of
- 36:11weeks we're not a sponsor
- 36:13but like all hands on deck
- 36:14our team will be there to
- 36:15sporting over fifty boulder
- 36:17athletes that are competing
- 36:18there uh obviously we're
- 36:19doing the same thing at
- 36:20legends fittest of the
- 36:21coast is in the spring we
- 36:23had something like thirty
- 36:24athletes there last year um
- 36:26we we will go wherever we
- 36:28can wherever we can within
- 36:29reason um and for me it's
- 36:32it's weird because I'm not competing
- 36:35Anymore in twenty twenty five.
- 36:37I can't compete at Legends
- 36:38as the programming sponsor.
- 36:40I'll know the workout,
- 36:41so I certainly can't compete.
- 36:42So I'm not.
- 36:44I have a follow.
- 36:45I want to go down that path
- 36:47because here's the one
- 36:48drawback of Boulder athlete
- 36:49that and we've said this
- 36:51about other people in the
- 36:52elite division who do a lot
- 36:54of programming for competitions.
- 36:58Because Boulder has grown so much,
- 37:00and you have mentioned
- 37:02you're doing the Programming for Legends,
- 37:04which is probably one of
- 37:06the top three events in the
- 37:07Masters Division for the year.
- 37:10And does that bring a
- 37:13conflict of interest?
- 37:14I know you are not competing,
- 37:16but you have eight hundred
- 37:17athletes that do your programming.
- 37:19Yeah, that's a great question.
- 37:21One,
- 37:21everyone should just join and then you
- 37:23won't be surprised.
- 37:26Not really.
- 37:29So with the programming sponsor,
- 37:31be clear about Legends.
- 37:33We're the programming sponsor.
- 37:35And that means that I get to
- 37:38help influence the workouts
- 37:39that Joe creates.
- 37:42I don't write the workouts.
- 37:44I don't have to love all of the workouts.
- 37:47But Joe and I will
- 37:48collaborate on the workouts
- 37:50with the idea that there
- 37:51will be some things in
- 37:52there that feel bold or athlete-like.
- 37:55And that's it.
- 37:58We don't take over the
- 37:59programming in any way.
- 38:01And it's a shared responsibility.
- 38:04It's something that's kind
- 38:06of fun that we can influence.
- 38:08But when it comes down to it,
- 38:09the idea is to create a
- 38:11test that's well-rounded,
- 38:12that a well-rounded athlete
- 38:14should be able to thrive in.
- 38:18And that's, I mean, honestly,
- 38:19that's the program.
- 38:20My programming isn't overly biased.
- 38:22We're not,
- 38:22I'm not trying to create
- 38:23gymnastics ninjas,
- 38:24even though I'm great at gymnastics.
- 38:26It's to create incredibly
- 38:29well-rounded and over-prepared athletes,
- 38:31over-prepared for whatever
- 38:32comes in competition.
- 38:34So when it comes to like
- 38:36writing or influencing some
- 38:39of the programming in a large competition,
- 38:42you know,
- 38:42it negates me from competing
- 38:43because I would know the workouts.
- 38:44Obviously that's not fair.
- 38:48you know athletes in boulder
- 38:49athlete will not see any
- 38:51major biases or changes
- 38:52between now and legends
- 38:53that would favor them doing
- 38:55well at the legends
- 38:56championship it's and if
- 38:59and you could study I could
- 39:00open the book to you as
- 39:01almost like an audit like
- 39:03hey look at the program
- 39:04we've done for the last you
- 39:05know eighteen months and
- 39:07watch it continue in this
- 39:09same flow and pattern
- 39:10through legends,
- 39:11through the games next year.
- 39:13And regardless of who
- 39:14programs and what's programmed,
- 39:15our athletes should be, uh, well-prepared,
- 39:18but you bring up that point.
- 39:19Like, um, you know, let's say that,
- 39:21let's say, um,
- 39:23we were going to introduce it.
- 39:25Let's say that we were going
- 39:25to introduce a pig flip at legends.
- 39:27I can just use that because
- 39:28we're not introducing a pig
- 39:29flip at legends.
- 39:30Okay.
- 39:31Um, not that I know of, um,
- 39:33but if I just started introducing,
- 39:35you know, uh,
- 39:36massive amounts of tire flips or,
- 39:38or pig flips or something like that,
- 39:39or peg boards, I was like,
- 39:40all of a sudden Boulder
- 39:41athletes are all doing peg
- 39:43boards and it's all showing
- 39:44up in social media.
- 39:45And then it shows up at
- 39:46legends that gets a little bit weird.
- 39:48Right.
- 39:48Yeah.
- 39:48Um,
- 39:50So, you know, I don't see weird,
- 39:55unique things like that happening.
- 39:58You know,
- 39:58should you expect handstand
- 39:59pushups at Legends?
- 40:00Like, probably.
- 40:01Should you expect to snatch
- 40:02or clean and jerk or swim
- 40:04or run or carry things or do CrossFit?
- 40:08You should expect all of those things.
- 40:09Yes.
- 40:11But that's my answer.
- 40:13And it may not be a hundred
- 40:14percent satisfactory
- 40:15because when it comes down to it,
- 40:18everybody and anybody will
- 40:19have their suspicions that
- 40:21if a training camp knows the workouts,
- 40:23there's going to be some
- 40:24sort of leakage into the programming.
- 40:26And I'm just kind of a routine-based guy.
- 40:29I program things well out in advance.
- 40:31And the idea behind the
- 40:33Legends programming for
- 40:35that championship is to create
- 40:38a well-rounded test,
- 40:40like the game should be a
- 40:42well-rounded test,
- 40:43like people's training
- 40:44should be well-rounded.
- 40:45So it should all, in theory, blow like
- 40:51butter I don't know what I
- 40:52don't know what the right
- 40:53and the facts are that you
- 40:54are investing in the
- 40:56master's division more than
- 40:58anyone else and so and
- 41:01because of that you that
- 41:02has helped your growth but
- 41:03you also are going to be an
- 41:05influence anyway because
- 41:06you are deeply invested in
- 41:08this division anyway I'm a
- 41:11student of the division I
- 41:12think of it that way too
- 41:15When we're training for the
- 41:15games or we're training for
- 41:17any kind of a competition,
- 41:18last year training for Legends,
- 41:20we're studying what Legends
- 41:22has put out over the past
- 41:23couple of years and
- 41:25training to prepare for Legends.
- 41:28Legends tends to be one of
- 41:31those competitions that's almost as hard,
- 41:33if not more challenging than the games.
- 41:35At least that's been my
- 41:36experience over five years,
- 41:44such a challenging test it
- 41:46tends to be heavier um and
- 41:48maybe that's the a bias of
- 41:50of joe and bob when they
- 41:51program legends they they
- 41:53bias things a little bit
- 41:53heavier there but um
- 41:57Where am I going with that?
- 41:59All that to say is that if
- 42:01you're preparing for a competition,
- 42:02you know, you study how that's been,
- 42:06what's been delivered in the past.
- 42:07Another example would be like MFC.
- 42:09MFC tends to use heavy sandbags.
- 42:11Like I was a forty seven
- 42:14year old doing two hundred
- 42:15pound sandbag cleans at MFC
- 42:17in twenty twenty four, I think,
- 42:20or twenty twenty three.
- 42:21I can't remember.
- 42:22Twenty twenty three.
- 42:22I was like, this is a heavy sandbag.
- 42:24I will never get caught off guard.
- 42:27Again, if I'm preparing for MFC,
- 42:30I'm using heavy sandbags.
- 42:31So Boulder athletes that are
- 42:32preparing for MFC right now
- 42:35are having a dose of two
- 42:36hundred pound sandbags.
- 42:37You've become a student of the sport.
- 42:40You can become a student of
- 42:41the trends you see.
- 42:43And I guess that's another
- 42:44example of like whether
- 42:45it's legends or fittest of
- 42:46the coast or MFC or the
- 42:48fittest experience or monster games.
- 42:50you you study what has
- 42:51historically been put out
- 42:52there um and again it's all
- 42:55just crossfit but you can
- 42:56kind of like okay we're
- 42:57gonna use two hundred pound
- 42:58sandbags let's practice
- 42:59that or getting ready for
- 43:00the games like we have seen
- 43:02pistols at the games maybe
- 43:03we should practice pistols
- 43:05and then they throw out
- 43:05weighted pistols at us like
- 43:07holy crap we may never see
- 43:08that again but next year we
- 43:10won't get caught off guard
- 43:11we'll be practicing weighted pistols
- 43:13So, um,
- 43:15well-rounded programs should pay
- 43:17attention.
- 43:17It should be students of the
- 43:18game and students of competitions.
- 43:20That's, that's what I do.
- 43:22Uh, SEMA jumps in with a great example.
- 43:23Should,
- 43:24should you know how to do triple
- 43:25unders if Boz is programming?
- 43:27Yes.
- 43:27Everyone has a bias.
- 43:29It's fine.
- 43:30Right.
- 43:31And Boz is programming.
- 43:33I'm like, ah, here we go.
- 43:35We're,
- 43:35we're going to do some pirouettes on
- 43:36our hands.
- 43:37We're going to do triple unders,
- 43:38maybe double crossovers.
- 43:40Um,
- 43:42I don't think we'll see
- 43:43those kinds of things for Masters.
- 43:45But if Boz were programming,
- 43:46let's just say like, hey,
- 43:47they have a guest
- 43:48programmer for Legends and
- 43:49his name is Boz.
- 43:51We're probably going to
- 43:52practice some stuff like
- 43:53that and not be excited about it,
- 43:55but we will.
- 43:56Some of the higher skill...
- 43:59I actually don't want to
- 43:59call them circus tricks, right?
- 44:01Because they're not.
- 44:01But they're high skill.
- 44:03They're high skill stuff.
- 44:04They require practice.
- 44:06He was trained in the circus.
- 44:08That's what I know.
- 44:09Maybe that's where I came.
- 44:10But I thought about that.
- 44:11But, you know, pirouettes up on a box.
- 44:15I love that kind of stuff.
- 44:16Like, I absolutely love it.
- 44:18But you you are dealing with, you know,
- 44:20really high skill and a
- 44:21little bit higher danger stuff.
- 44:22But yeah, Boz is doing it.
- 44:24Or a few years ago,
- 44:25Mayhem programmed Legends Championship.
- 44:26You're like, OK, Mayhem.
- 44:29Can we expect GHDs?
- 44:30We should probably expect
- 44:32some significant volume
- 44:34GHDs or ring muscle-ups.
- 44:35What do you typically see from Mayhem?
- 44:37And sure enough, at that competition,
- 44:39I think we had an event
- 44:40that started with.
- 44:42Seventy-five or ninety GHD sit-ups,
- 44:44something like that,
- 44:44which is a lot for masters.
- 44:47But that's something that, yeah, if, if.
- 44:50And that's where I want to
- 44:52say like Boulder athlete,
- 44:53where will the Boulder athlete flavor be?
- 44:56Well, I will say that, you know,
- 44:58Boulder athlete on, on, um,
- 45:00know three days of the week
- 45:02monday tuesday and friday
- 45:03we have we open up our
- 45:04training on the compete in
- 45:06elite side of things with
- 45:08uh with gymnastics
- 45:09endurance we're pairing a
- 45:11high skill gymnastics
- 45:12movement um with
- 45:14complications so a
- 45:15complication would be like
- 45:16you know let's say like
- 45:17tuesdays would be uh
- 45:18pressing overhead so we
- 45:19might have handstand push
- 45:21push-ups combined with echo
- 45:22bike because that's going
- 45:23to mess up handstand
- 45:24push-ups or double unders or wall walks
- 45:27and uh what was fun at the
- 45:29crossfit games for masters
- 45:31is we had a workout that was
- 45:33uh, handstand pushups,
- 45:34echo bike and double unders.
- 45:36And so many athletes sent me
- 45:38a message saying, Hey, this is a,
- 45:40this is our Tuesday.
- 45:41I'm like,
- 45:41I know this is a Tuesday workout.
- 45:43A hundred percent.
- 45:44That's a shoulder endurance workout.
- 45:46I mean,
- 45:46it's really more of a
- 45:46cardiovascular endurance, uh,
- 45:48when it turned, when it came on, but,
- 45:50but that's something that
- 45:51we pay attention to, you know, on Mondays,
- 45:52we often do ring muscle ups
- 45:54combined with some sort of complication.
- 45:56And if,
- 45:57if I can bring a little bit of that
- 45:59interestingness to legends,
- 46:00that would be kind of fun.
- 46:02But that's not something that you,
- 46:03that would be,
- 46:04it shouldn't throw a wrench in anything.
- 46:05You should always expect to
- 46:07have to do higher skilled
- 46:08gymnastics under fatigue.
- 46:11But we practice that at Boulder.
- 46:13We practice it three days a
- 46:14week as our opener.
- 46:16Like that's just kind of how we warm up.
- 46:18What are my thoughts on that?
- 46:21That would be.
- 46:22I want to move.
- 46:22I want to move into a
- 46:23different direction because
- 46:24my lunch hour is coming to an end.
- 46:26I could have you on for a couple hours.
- 46:29That'd be so fun, right?
- 46:30We could just chat.
- 46:31Um,
- 46:33Dave in his weekend review a couple
- 46:35months back kind of leaked
- 46:36this idea that there may be, um,
- 46:39an in-person way for the
- 46:41masters athlete to qualify for the games.
- 46:44I wanted to get your thoughts on that.
- 46:47Yeah.
- 46:48Um, so I,
- 46:49I've heard a little bit about that.
- 46:51I, I know, uh,
- 46:52I know who's pitching that to Dave.
- 46:54Um,
- 46:56I was copied on that communication.
- 46:58And what I do know is that
- 47:00Dave was receptive.
- 47:02And I believe they've had
- 47:04one or two meetings already.
- 47:05I believe one of those
- 47:06meetings was at the CrossFit Games.
- 47:10And so it's looking like it's I mean,
- 47:12having a couple of meetings
- 47:14are all steps in the right direction.
- 47:16But I think Masters athletes
- 47:18would love that.
- 47:19And if they could, you know,
- 47:21ideally test test this with
- 47:23one competition in twenty
- 47:25twenty six and then the
- 47:26future expand that a little bit to,
- 47:28you know,
- 47:29if you have one in twenty twenty
- 47:31six and it's in a specific location,
- 47:33you know,
- 47:33that's not fair for the entire world.
- 47:36who wants to try to qualify in person.
- 47:38But if they can test this in
- 47:39twenty twenty six and then
- 47:42or proof of concept,
- 47:43make sure it works and then expand that.
- 47:47And again,
- 47:47we're probably not going to send
- 47:48we're never going to send
- 47:49all of our Masters athletes
- 47:50to the games via in-person competition.
- 47:53But it would be really
- 47:55interesting if you could get
- 47:57half of the athletes via
- 47:59multiple in-person competitions.
- 48:01So all that to say is that I
- 48:03know that talks are happening.
- 48:04I was thoroughly
- 48:07I wasn't thoroughly shocked or surprised,
- 48:09but I was maybe grateful to
- 48:11see that Dave was receptive
- 48:12to that idea and that that
- 48:14actually turned into action from HQ.
- 48:17So I know who's in charge of that.
- 48:20I don't think that's
- 48:21something to let out just
- 48:23yet because it's too early to know.
- 48:25But the person that would be
- 48:26in charge of running that is a very,
- 48:29very competent competition
- 48:33Organizer, I mean,
- 48:35very professional competitions,
- 48:36very smart.
- 48:38In fact,
- 48:38I have a call with the same
- 48:40individual tomorrow that
- 48:41was sort of out of the blue.
- 48:42Just a text that said, hey, are you free?
- 48:45Wait, what's today?
- 48:46Friday.
- 48:46Today's Friday.
- 48:47Oh, I have a call in ten minutes with him.
- 48:49So he said, hey,
- 48:51are you free Friday at noon?
- 48:53And I was like, yes.
- 48:54And he's like, OK, I'll call you.
- 48:56I have no idea what that's about.
- 48:57But in ten minutes,
- 48:59maybe I'll know more or
- 49:00maybe it's about something else.
- 49:02I have no idea.
- 49:03But that rumor is true.
- 49:06And there's talks happening.
- 49:07And that would be very, very exciting.
- 49:09to see that happen.
- 49:11And then ideally, if it works well,
- 49:13it's going to move slowly.
- 49:14But if, if you could be like,
- 49:16you have a competition in
- 49:18some of the major areas, you know, Europe,
- 49:21Brazil, couple in America, you know,
- 49:23maybe one in, in Asia.
- 49:25I mean, that'd be sick.
- 49:26That'd be just amazing.
- 49:27And it would be so good for the master's,
- 49:31Um, and even if it was just age group,
- 49:32again, you can have teenagers and,
- 49:35and masters that there's a lot of,
- 49:36a lot of crossover there.
- 49:38We could do the same
- 49:39workouts and a lot of the
- 49:40same scaling patterns, um,
- 49:42and find the fittest athletes.
- 49:43Yeah.
- 49:44It brings more meaning to those,
- 49:45those events.
- 49:46And I'm sure event
- 49:47coordinators would love to
- 49:49have that added meaning to
- 49:52something to bring more
- 49:53people into the stands.
- 49:54I mean, heck yeah.
- 49:56And they just have to figure out, you know,
- 49:58like, like, let's say,
- 49:59let's say that down the road, like,
- 50:01you know, the syndicate crown had,
- 50:02had masters in there.
- 50:04You just have to navigate
- 50:05the challenges of having so
- 50:08many more divisions.
- 50:09That's,
- 50:09that's the one thing that makes
- 50:10masters difficult.
- 50:11both wonderful from an
- 50:12attendance perspective and
- 50:14maybe a revenue perspective,
- 50:15but logistically,
- 50:17it does take a special
- 50:19skillset to program it
- 50:21correctly for those age groups,
- 50:24which that's not hard to do,
- 50:24but actually the logistics of running
- 50:28you know, fourteen heats per event.
- 50:30That's not that's not easy.
- 50:33And those are I mean,
- 50:33that's fourteen heats.
- 50:34That's that's if you only
- 50:35had one heat going per division,
- 50:38if that makes sense.
- 50:39So logistically, it's challenging.
- 50:41But that's what that's what
- 50:42great competition organizers do.
- 50:44I don't know how they do it,
- 50:45but they do it.
- 50:47All right,
- 50:47I'm going to finish up our
- 50:48conversation with this,
- 50:49and then I got to have you
- 50:50back on because I'm not
- 50:51even we haven't even
- 50:52touched the surface of all the issues.
- 50:54You just send me an invite
- 50:55and we'll do it.
- 50:56So the last thing is there's
- 50:58all these plans in place.
- 51:00There's all these rumors of
- 51:01things to come.
- 51:02And then you have this thing
- 51:03called the sale of CrossFit.
- 51:07That who knows what kind of
- 51:09wrinkle that is going to
- 51:10bring to this whole thing.
- 51:13You as a business owner in the space,
- 51:17as a six-time games champion saying,
- 51:20How and other people as
- 51:23prominent as you in the
- 51:25elite division have put
- 51:26kind of their flag down
- 51:27saying it has to be this way or else.
- 51:30What are your thoughts about
- 51:31the sale and can you make
- 51:33any plans going forward?
- 51:34I mean...
- 51:38We move forward with things
- 51:41continuing in a similar fashion.
- 51:46What's nice is that our
- 51:49entire business doesn't
- 51:50hinge on the CrossFit Games.
- 51:53My entire career doesn't
- 51:54hinge on the CrossFit Games.
- 51:55There are multiple other
- 51:57competitions that are very,
- 51:58very satisfying.
- 52:00uh there's a there's the
- 52:01steam that goes with the
- 52:02crossfit games that would
- 52:03very much like to see
- 52:05continue um both on the
- 52:07individual side and the um
- 52:08you know of course the age
- 52:10group side and or the the
- 52:12divisional side we'll call
- 52:13it that I would love to see
- 52:14that continue I have a
- 52:15drawer full of of gold
- 52:17medals I would love to
- 52:18continue and I'd love to
- 52:19continue to build that
- 52:20legacy that's my preferred
- 52:22direction um but you know i
- 52:26All we can do is plan to
- 52:28continue in this direction.
- 52:30And if it changes, adapt.
- 52:32I think we've adapted.
- 52:34We adapted when we were... I mean,
- 52:36it was a big shock when
- 52:37they said that you were
- 52:38breaking apart the
- 52:39divisions from the elites in Madison.
- 52:42I mean, I was sad.
- 52:43I was sad.
- 52:44I was upset.
- 52:46I hate hearing things through rumors.
- 52:48I hate it not being
- 52:48delivered in a way that was really...
- 52:52you know,
- 52:52well thought out and packaged or
- 52:53at least communicated.
- 52:55But it's turned out to be great.
- 52:58I mean, it's worked out really well.
- 52:59I don't think,
- 53:00I don't know if Boulder
- 53:00Athlete is where we're at
- 53:02if that didn't happen.
- 53:03You know,
- 53:03there was something serendipitous
- 53:05about that that I'm not upset about.
- 53:07So with that kind of optimism,
- 53:09that's my glasses half full
- 53:12kind of optimism.
- 53:13Like, hey, if everything changes,
- 53:17let's roll with it.
- 53:17Let's see what happens.
- 53:19There may be some opportunities there.
- 53:21There may be some things
- 53:22that are really scary, but that's okay.
- 53:25That's how life is, right?
- 53:28I have this tattoo in the
- 53:30middle of my chest.
- 53:30I forget it's there,
- 53:31but oftentimes people are like, hey,
- 53:32what's that tattoo mean?
- 53:34And I got it twenty years ago.
- 53:36So it's a balance.
- 53:38There's this vertical line
- 53:39in the middle and two
- 53:40kanjis on either side.
- 53:42It's the word for crisis, actually.
- 53:46And it's the balance between
- 53:47danger and opportunity.
- 53:49And every time...
- 53:51we sort of enter a new stage in life.
- 53:53There's a crisis moment.
- 53:55And crisis may not be,
- 53:56it doesn't have to be like
- 53:57something scary or dangerous.
- 53:58It's just like there's a transition,
- 54:00a transition moment.
- 54:01And in every transition or
- 54:03every uncertain moment or every crisis,
- 54:05there is a balance between
- 54:07danger and opportunity.
- 54:08And I kind of think of things that way.
- 54:11Like there could be great
- 54:12opportunity if there are major changes.
- 54:14There could be big dangers or big bummers.
- 54:16It could threaten everything.
- 54:19But I mean,
- 54:20I've been kind of an
- 54:21entrepreneur my whole life.
- 54:22So if everything changes and
- 54:24everything falls apart,
- 54:26we'll just, you know,
- 54:28we'll build something else.
- 54:29You know,
- 54:29there's lots of things to do out there.
- 54:33I was on Talking Elite
- 54:33Fitness the other day and
- 54:36it's not published yet,
- 54:36but they asked me if I
- 54:38wasn't a CrossFit athlete,
- 54:40what else would I do at this point?
- 54:42I mean, it's sort of like when people ask,
- 54:43like, if you won the lottery,
- 54:44would you still do what you do?
- 54:45Well,
- 54:46I would still do what I do if I won
- 54:48the lottery.
- 54:48And if I wasn't doing CrossFit and I had,
- 54:51I would be doing another sport.
- 54:52You know, I'd be doing,
- 54:54Maybe high rocks.
- 54:55That's pretty awful.
- 54:57But maybe doing that or like
- 54:59triathlons or I don't even know,
- 55:02but I'd be doing something.
- 55:03And so all that to say that whatever comes,
- 55:07we'll navigate it.
- 55:08And there are plenty of really great
- 55:12functional fitness CrossFit
- 55:14competitions out there
- 55:15where we can be tested and
- 55:16push our limits and get on
- 55:18the battlefield and have
- 55:19all of those feelings.
- 55:20Uh,
- 55:20but ideally we get to do that at
- 55:22something called the
- 55:22CrossFit games in the future as well.
- 55:24Ideally.
- 55:24Awesome.
- 55:26What I, just because you said it,
- 55:28all of your medals are in a drawer.
- 55:31Yeah.
- 55:32Yeah.
- 55:32I don't, I don't have,
- 55:33I'm not a guy that puts them all up.
- 55:35I just haven't had a chance
- 55:36in the last seven years, but yeah,
- 55:38it's in a drawer right here.
- 55:39Uh, in fact, right behind me.
- 55:40Um,
- 55:42I mean, I have them all, you know,
- 55:45just all in this drawer.
- 55:47I have all my shirts, you know, my,
- 55:49in fact, I have like, you know,
- 55:51the fittest on earth shirts.
- 55:52I have these in bags with
- 55:54the metal from that year.
- 55:57One of the things we do need to do
- 55:58And we need to have back.
- 56:00In fact,
- 56:00Boulder Athlete is going to
- 56:01sponsor it if we have to next year.
- 56:03We're going to make it happen.
- 56:05But the winners should have
- 56:07Fittest on Earth shirts.
- 56:09It's something we had when
- 56:10we were in Madison.
- 56:12We didn't have it last year in Birmingham,
- 56:14and we didn't have it this year.
- 56:15But there is something about
- 56:17having a medal around your
- 56:18neck and a white shirt with
- 56:19gold words that say Fittest on Earth.
- 56:22That is the shirt.
- 56:23You want that shirt.
- 56:25We were actually thinking as
- 56:26Boulder athlete,
- 56:26like we're just going to
- 56:27send all the winners
- 56:28fittest on earth shirts.
- 56:29We're just going to make
- 56:29them ourselves and send them.
- 56:31And then we realized that is
- 56:32a straight up trademark.
- 56:35Yeah.
- 56:37But you can get permission, right?
- 56:39I mean,
- 56:41maybe CrossFit would give you
- 56:42permission to do it.
- 56:44I mean, we, we have thought about that.
- 56:46I can't, I can't imagine they'd say yes.
- 56:49But it would be a hard
- 56:50argument if they said no.
- 56:52Why not?
- 56:53But we would very much have
- 56:54to have their permission.
- 56:55We asked ChatGPT, and ChatGPT was like,
- 56:57yeah,
- 56:57you can't... That is a strong
- 57:01copyrighted phrase right there,
- 57:02so you're going to want to
- 57:03tread carefully.
- 57:05But it is on our Thursday
- 57:06to-do list to discuss that next week.
- 57:10Again, is this something we should do?
- 57:11Because how cool would it be
- 57:12just to have something in
- 57:13the mail that says, Fittest on Earth.
- 57:15Congratulations.
- 57:16And
- 57:18Again,
- 57:18we've got a shirt vendor that would
- 57:20do that for us.
- 57:22Thick Boy is our partner in our apparel,
- 57:25and he's great.
- 57:26They would do that in a
- 57:27second if we had permission.
- 57:30Since you said that,
- 57:31I will just ask CrossFit.
- 57:33I'm just going to ask them,
- 57:34can we do this?
- 57:36And whatever they say, they say.
- 57:39Sean in Oregon says,
- 57:40appropriate that his
- 57:40hardware is in a tool chest.
- 57:42It is.
- 57:43That is correct.
- 57:44It's well protected.
- 57:46This will survive a fire.
- 57:48Well, Jason, as always,
- 57:51it was a treat having you on.
- 57:53Again,
- 57:53we barely touched the surface of all
- 57:55the stuff I wanted to get
- 57:56to as to what's going on in
- 57:58the Masters and H Group divisions.
- 58:01So we'll have to have you
- 58:01back on for sure.
- 58:02I'd love to.
- 58:05But thank you so much for doing this.
- 58:06And thank you guys in the
- 58:07chat for the great questions.
- 58:10With that, guys,
- 58:11don't forget to like and
- 58:12subscribe to the channel.
- 58:14And I don't know if we're
- 58:16doing a Sunday night show this week.
- 58:18Jamie had surgery today.
- 58:20I'm heading to Montana tomorrow.
- 58:22And Carolyn probably doesn't
- 58:24want to do the show by herself.
- 58:26So with that,
- 58:28we will see everybody next
- 58:29week on Lunch with the Clydesdale.
- 58:32With that, guys, peace out.
