- 0:47We are back in the book of Korean folklore written down by
- 0:50Jung Yin sub. In the first story we see a monk
- 0:53ask for more and more and more only to repay his partner with
- 0:57the heavens. In the second story we learn
- 1:01about how a giant created the mountains and rivers and there's
- 1:05a little bit of bodily functions of that story.
- 1:10And finally about how a boy riding a log wins the girl he
- 1:13desires after helping the smallest of creatures.
- 1:17OK, let's begin. The three stars told by son
- 1:22Jinte in Gupo in 1926. Long ago there lived a rich man
- 1:30who had one daughter. One year he went up to the
- 1:34capital to take government post and left his daughter in charge
- 1:37of the house. In his absence, one day a
- 1:42Buddhist monk came begging for alms.
- 1:45The daughter told the maid to give him a little rice, but the
- 1:48monk asked her to fill the bowl up to the top, and so she told
- 1:51the maid to do so. Yet however much she put into
- 1:54the bowl, it would not be filled.
- 1:57She fetched all the rice from the storeroom and even the
- 2:00unhauled rice and Millet, and yet the bowl could not be
- 2:03filled. The maid was very puzzled and
- 2:07she asked how can it be filled? The monk answered if the
- 2:12daughter of the house comes and tries herself, she will be able
- 2:15to fill it without difficulty. So the daughter of the house
- 2:19came to the monk and tried to fill the bowl, but even she
- 2:22could not fill it completely. Then the monk said if you pick
- 2:27up each grain separately 9 times with silver chopsticks, you will
- 2:31fill it. So she did as he suggested, but
- 2:34still without success. If you take off your
- 2:39undergarments in a pit and then try, you will succeed, said the
- 2:42monk. So she did so, but Even so the
- 2:46bowl was not filled. Meanwhile the sun had set and
- 2:52the monk earnestly begged her to give him lodging for one night.
- 2:55She refused his request with the excuse that there was no guest
- 2:59room in the house. But he still persisted in his
- 3:02request and he would not leave the house.
- 3:06He said that he would be satisfied to sleep in the
- 3:08stable, and this she allowed him to do.
- 3:12At midnight he came and said, it is too cold in the stable, will
- 3:16you not let me sleep in the corner of the kitchen?
- 3:20She took pity on him and let him move into the kitchen.
- 3:23But a little later he came and said, I cannot stand the cold in
- 3:27here either, let me come and sleep in the annex of your room.
- 3:31This too she allowed him to do. Very soon, however, he came and
- 3:35said, it is too cold here too, please let me sleep behind the
- 3:40screen in your room. Even this she allowed him to do,
- 3:46and so it came about that the monk slept in the same room.
- 3:50When she awoke the next morning the monk was gone.
- 3:54On her father's return some time later, all the servants went out
- 3:57to welcome him, but she could not go, for she was with child.
- 4:02On hearing this, her father was very angry and was determined to
- 4:05kill her. She was taken into the garden
- 4:08and bound, and a servant was ordered to cut off her head, but
- 4:13when he lifted the axe the handle broke in two and it fell
- 4:16behind him. He took a sword and tried to
- 4:20kill her with that, but when he flourished it over her head the
- 4:24blade snapped in half. Her father then made an
- 4:27underground cell and cast her into it.
- 4:31He kept the key in himself, and he gave orders that no food
- 4:34should be taken to her so that she should starve to death.
- 4:39From that time, the monk appeared in the underground cell
- 4:41every night. No one knew how he came or how
- 4:45he was able to get into the cell.
- 4:48He took food to the girl and in due course she gave birth to
- 4:51triplets. Some years later, her father
- 4:55ordered the cell to be opened. He expected to find only a
- 4:58skeleton. He was greatly astonished to
- 5:01find his daughter alive, with three children sitting beside
- 5:04her, reading. He asked her how it came about.
- 5:08She told him the whole story. So he sent for the monk, and
- 5:12when he came he asked him, Are these three children yours?
- 5:17Yes, replied the monk, and I will prove it.
- 5:20He lifted up the sleeve of his robe.
- 5:22If these three children pass through my sleeve without
- 5:24touching it, that will prove that they are indeed my sons.
- 5:29Then the children pass through his sleeve without touching it.
- 5:32The monk said again, Let them put on wooden sandals and walk
- 5:35on white sand. They will leave no trace
- 5:38whatsoever on the sand. They walked on the sand without
- 5:42marking it. So the truth was proved and the
- 5:46father recognized the marriage of the monk with his daughter
- 5:49and the monk was seen to be a miracle working Buddhist.
- 5:54When they died, his three children were sent in heaven as
- 5:57the three stars of the constellation Vega.
- 6:00They rise in a vertical line and set in a horizontal line, just
- 6:04as the children were born 1 after the other, downwards from
- 6:07the womb and were buried in three graves side by side.
- 6:12The end, all right. And the second story is the
- 6:19mountain and the rivers told by Bang Zhong Huan in Seoul, 1925.
- 6:28Long, long ago, when food ripened on the food tree and
- 6:32clothes ripened on the clothes tree, there lived a giant.
- 6:37He was so big that even his ears were 600 feet long.
- 6:41He could not wear clothes, because there was not enough
- 6:43cloth in the whole land to cover his body.
- 6:46So he went nearly naked the whole year long, and in winter
- 6:50he suffered bitterly from a cold.
- 6:53The king in those days was of course even before the time of
- 6:57Dangoon, was very sorry indeed for the poor giant, and he had
- 7:01as much cloth gathered as could be found collected from all the
- 7:04provinces, and he ordered all the tailors might make a robe
- 7:08for him. After many months they finished
- 7:11the robe, but even then it was too short.
- 7:14Nothing could be done since there was no more cloth, but was
- 7:17given to the giant as a gift from the king.
- 7:21The giant gladly put on the robe and danced for joy in the lofty
- 7:25mountain pass of Seje. Suddenly the whole land
- 7:29darkened, for as he danced, his robe cut off the sunbeams.
- 7:35All of the crops failed in the darkness and the people appealed
- 7:38to the king to send the giant away.
- 7:41The king was very angry and ordered his army to exile the
- 7:45giant beyond the borders of the land.
- 7:48A party of the mightiest warriors set out to carry the
- 7:50royal message to him. When they reached the summit of
- 7:54the mountain pass where he was standing, they all shouted
- 7:56together in a loud voice, but the giant couldn't hear them
- 8:00because his ears were so far from his feet.
- 8:03So they climbed up his legs, and after many months they reached
- 8:05his navel once more. They shouted, Oh giant, your
- 8:10robe cut off the sunlight, and the crops don't grow.
- 8:13His Majesty has ordered that you be expelled beyond the borders
- 8:16of the land. So the giant was driven out to
- 8:18the barren fields of Manchuria. Soon he became very hungry and
- 8:23thirsty and ate the soil of the fields and drank the water of
- 8:26the sea. Then his stomach began to roar
- 8:30like a mighty flood, and instantly his bowels were
- 8:33loosened and his droppings became a range of mountains.
- 8:37The highest mountain in Korea, Bekdusan Whitehead Mountain.
- 8:42And when he made water, 2 mighty channels were cut, one in front
- 8:46of him and one behind. These are the 2 greatest rivers
- 8:49of the northern frontier of Korea.
- 8:52One is the Amnon Gang or the Yellow River, the longest river
- 8:56in Korea, and the other great river is the Dumangan, the Tuman
- 9:02River. There's a great lake on top of
- 9:05the mountain where both of these rivers rise, called Zinzi Heaven
- 9:09Lake or Yongdon Dragon Pool. The lake was formed by the giant
- 9:14making water there. The end.
- 9:20OK and the next story, the great flood told by Kim Gitek in
- 9:25Tongyong in 1913. Once Upon a time there stood a
- 9:30big Laurel tree. A fairy often used to come down
- 9:33from heaven and rest there. She bore a son whose father was
- 9:37the tree, and when he was seven years old she went up to heaven
- 9:41again. One day there was a great storm,
- 9:45and the rain continued for many months, so that the whole earth
- 9:48was flooded as if by a raging sea.
- 9:52The flood even began to drown the great Laurel.
- 9:55The tree said to his son. My boy, you are my son.
- 9:59I am afraid I shall fall so then you must ride on my back.
- 10:03It is the only way that you can be saved.
- 10:07Soon afterwards the tree was uprooted by the waves.
- 10:10So the boy climbed on to the back of his father.
- 10:12The tree and the tree remained floating on the water for many
- 10:15days. One day a great crowd of ants
- 10:19came drifting by. They shouted, O son of the tree,
- 10:24save us. Please save us.
- 10:25So the son of the tree asked his father, Father, may I save them?
- 10:31And the tree replied, Indeed you may.
- 10:34The son called to them. Get on to the tree.
- 10:37The ants gladly climbed on to the branches and leaves of the
- 10:40Laurel. Then a group of mosquitoes came
- 10:43past, and weiried with much flying, they appealed to the
- 10:46boy. Oh, son of the tree, please save
- 10:50us, we implore you. So the son of the tree asked his
- 10:54father if he might save them. It gave its consent and the
- 10:57mosquitoes alighted on the branches of the tree.
- 11:00Then a boy of his own age who was floating on the water
- 11:03shouted, Oh my friend, save me, please save me.
- 11:07So the son asked his father the tree for permission to help the
- 11:10boy, but the tree said no. The boy shouted desperately in
- 11:15distress. And the son asked his father
- 11:17again, but the answer was the same.
- 11:20Now the boy was screaming for help, for he was near to
- 11:23drowning. So the son asked his father for
- 11:251/3 time, father, do let me save the boy this time.
- 11:30The tree replied, do as you like.
- 11:32And so the son shouted to the poor boy, Get on this tree.
- 11:36And so the boy was saved too. At last the great Laurel tree
- 11:40carrying the two boys, the ants and the mosquitoes came to an
- 11:43island. It was the summit of a lofty
- 11:46mountain as high as Mount Bechdoo.
- 11:49The ants and the mosquitoes then went away after bidding farewell
- 11:52to the boy and expressing their gratitude.
- 11:56Thank you, son of the tree. You saved our lives and we are
- 11:59deeply indebted to you. Goodbye.
- 12:03The two boys who were very hungry, went and found a house
- 12:06where they lived an old woman with her two daughters.
- 12:10One of them was her own daughter and the other was a foster
- 12:12child. She received the two boys kindly
- 12:15and gave them work in the farmyard.
- 12:18There was no one else left alive, and all the other people
- 12:20had been drowned in the flood. Now the rain stopped, the water
- 12:26subsided and they started farming again.
- 12:29The old woman thought it would be advisable to arrange the
- 12:32marriages between the young people and decided to match her
- 12:35own daughter with a cleverer boy and her foster daughter with the
- 12:38other. The second boy detected the old
- 12:42woman's plan and decided to take advantage of this opportunity.
- 12:46He said to the old woman maliciously.
- 12:48The son of the tree is a most unusually clever boy.
- 12:52Though you scatter a great bag of Millet grains on the sand, he
- 12:56can pick it all up within half an hour.
- 12:58Let him try it and you will see for yourself.
- 13:02So to test his skill, the old woman scattered a great bag of
- 13:05Millet on the sand and bade the son of the tree to collect it
- 13:08again. He refused at first, but she
- 13:11repeated her demand, and in the end he had to agree.
- 13:15He tried to pick up the grains 1 by 1, but he was so slow that it
- 13:20seemed unlikely that he could finish in half a year, to say
- 13:23nothing of half a day. So with his head bowed in
- 13:26despair, he wondered miserably what he could do.
- 13:30Then he felt something biting his heel.
- 13:33It was a big Ant, and it said to him, I'm one of the ants you
- 13:37save from the flood. Why are you so sad?
- 13:41The boy told it what a difficult task he had been set, and then
- 13:44the Ant brought thousands of its friends and picked up all the
- 13:47grains, so that the bag was filled in a few minutes.
- 13:51But the other boy was jealous and watched the scene from a
- 13:53distance. He went and told the old woman
- 13:56that the task had not been done by the sun of the tree himself.
- 14:00So the old woman could not decide which of the boys she
- 14:02favoured, and she said to them, I love both of you equally,
- 14:07though I cannot decide which of you should marry my daughter and
- 14:10which marry my foster daughter. Now I have a plan.
- 14:16You shall choose your own destiny.
- 14:18There will be no moon tonight. What is the last day of the
- 14:21month? You must go and wait outside the
- 14:24gate in the dark, and I will put one of the girls in the east
- 14:28room and one in the West room. Then I shall call you, and you
- 14:32may enter whichever of the rooms you choose.
- 14:35Thus shall you make your own choice, and you should not be
- 14:38able to complain at the result. After supper the two boys went
- 14:44and waited outside. After a while the old woman
- 14:47called them in. In the summer night the son of
- 14:51the tree stood wondering which room he should enter.
- 14:54Just then he heard a big mosquito flying near his head.
- 14:58It came and whispered in his ear.
- 15:00Son of the tree, go to the east room.
- 15:03The east room. So went to the East Room and
- 15:08there he found the old woman's beautiful daughter and the other
- 15:12boy found her foster daughter in the West Room.
- 15:15It is said that these two couples had many children and
- 15:18that they are the ancestors of the whole human race today.
- 15:22The End. In the first story I love how
- 15:50the monk just keeps asking for more and more ridiculous things
- 15:53and they just went along with it.
- 15:55I did not like the dad locking up his daughter in order to
- 15:58punish her. And in the second story you get
- 16:00a bit of a glimpse into Korean culture and how UN taboo bodily
- 16:04functions are. If you get a chance, go and see
- 16:08the toilet museum in Siouan. And in the third story, I like
- 16:12how kindness was repaid. And the podcast shout out is too
- 16:16deep into history. Arjun takes you way back and
- 16:19sometimes much more recent, but he always gives you a good deep
- 16:23dive into a topic at hand. So go and check him out.
- 16:28And the listener shout out is to Chiba, Japan.
- 16:31Located just outside of Tokyo. The city is a major port for
- 16:35Japan. I've been to Japan a couple of
- 16:37times and I've always had fun. And if I get the chance to visit
- 16:41Chiba, I would love to go to visit the black sand beaches and
- 16:45get some sunshine. And so I say to my listener in
- 16:48Chiba Arigato Gojemasta O Yasumanisai, thank you and
- 16:54goodnight.
