- 0:02Speaker 1: There is there is Jeff who of course it's up. Nelly.
- 0:06Speaker 1: Good to see you, buddy.
- 0:07Speaker 2: You got you as well. Been a long time.
- 0:10Speaker 1: It has been a long time. Yeah.
- 0:11Speaker 3: You and I, we we go back a long ways.
- 0:13Speaker 3: And I like to think that during the days of
- 0:16Speaker 3: Baseball Tonight and covering the Yankees during the late nineties,
- 0:19Speaker 3: that that that we I was. I was on you
- 0:22Speaker 3: like I was a fan. I mean, you know, you
- 0:23Speaker 3: and I had a relationship way back when. And look
- 0:26Speaker 3: on a team with a bunch of superstars, even back
- 0:29Speaker 3: to Seattle, but it was really New York. You had
- 0:31Speaker 3: all those superstars, and I knew Nelly was gonna be
- 0:34Speaker 3: and he is a huge part of those teams, right right.
- 0:37Speaker 2: That's always a fan. Yeah, I agree, But I'm always
- 0:40Speaker 2: a fan of yours as well. I loved watching you
- 0:42Speaker 2: on TV. You got to know you as a person.
- 0:44Speaker 2: So always a big fan through the years. And you know,
- 0:47Speaker 2: I know I haven't seen you in forever, but I
- 0:49Speaker 2: have seen you on TV. So that's that's one good thing.
- 0:53Speaker 3: It's great to have you on boards. Justin and I
- 0:55Speaker 3: started this thing. Uh, I don't know, but about three
- 0:58Speaker 3: or four months ago. We've had we've We've had fantastic guests.
- 1:01Speaker 3: We've had people like Dusty on, we had a Rocket on,
- 1:03Speaker 3: we had Pedroia on, we had jam slasnagelon, we had
- 1:07Speaker 3: Durosa on. We've had a lot of we had a
- 1:09Speaker 3: lot of great guests. And the goal is to sort
- 1:11Speaker 3: of share your journey through baseball to baseball parents and
- 1:15Speaker 3: baseball players so that they can learn that it's not
- 1:18Speaker 3: necessarily linear and there's a lot of different ways to
- 1:21Speaker 3: get to wherever your journey is going to take us.
- 1:24Speaker 3: So let's start there, because I think a lot of
- 1:26Speaker 3: people Jeff know you as a Mariner and you was
- 1:29Speaker 3: a Yankee, but I think very few know about Jeff Nelson,
- 1:33Speaker 3: you know, the little league or the high school player,
- 1:36Speaker 3: how you got to where you eventually got to share
- 1:39Speaker 3: some of those stories with.
- 1:40Speaker 2: Us, or eight years in the minor leagues, you know,
- 1:44Speaker 2: you know I was you start when you're seven years old.
- 1:46Speaker 2: You absolutely love the game. I grew up in Baltimore,
- 1:49Speaker 2: so I was a big Orioles fan. You know, we
- 1:51Speaker 2: didn't have the video games and all that stuff that
- 1:54Speaker 2: we could sit inside. We had to get outside and
- 1:56Speaker 2: play and it was either wiffle ball in the backyard
- 2:00Speaker 2: pretending we were Eddie Murph or Eddie Murray or Ken Singleton.
- 2:03Speaker 2: We'd go through the whole Oriel lineup and be at Albumber,
- 2:06Speaker 2: you name him. We'd have this scene called step ball
- 2:09Speaker 2: when you're throwing this tennis ball against the steps and
- 2:12Speaker 2: it has to go over the car, and like if
- 2:14Speaker 2: it goes into the street and the er, it's a homer.
- 2:15Speaker 2: I mean, you learn how to field. Actually during stepball,
- 2:20Speaker 2: you know, you only had a few guys that you
- 2:21Speaker 2: were kids that you were able to get her to
- 2:23Speaker 2: play with. So you had to be able to pull
- 2:25Speaker 2: the ball. If you hit it the other way, you're
- 2:27Speaker 2: automatically out. You know, you did any anything you could to,
- 2:31Speaker 2: you know, just do something outside. Homework wasn't really a
- 2:35Speaker 2: big thing because we didn't get a whole lot of homework.
- 2:37Speaker 2: You did it and you did it in school and
- 2:38Speaker 2: then you stayed out until your mom yelled through the
- 2:41Speaker 2: neighborhood say it's time to come home. But I you know,
- 2:45Speaker 2: I didn't know anything about the draft. I always thought that, Okay,
- 2:49Speaker 2: I'm going to go and I'm going to play baseball
- 2:51Speaker 2: in college. I went to my junior year. You know,
- 2:56Speaker 2: guy Brian Jordan. He was played for He was he
- 3:00Speaker 2: made of mind in Texas. He played for the Falcons
- 3:03Speaker 2: and a big, real good baseball player. He went to
- 3:06Speaker 2: one of our rival high schools, Milford Mill. And I
- 3:09Speaker 2: actually got scouted when I was in the eleventh grade
- 3:12Speaker 2: and I faced Milford Mill and they won the state
- 3:15Speaker 2: champions at state champs that year and I beat them twice.
- 3:19Speaker 2: And there was a Mets and a Cardinal fan scout
- 3:22Speaker 2: there and that's how I got scouted. That's how I
- 3:24Speaker 2: got noticed by d Yeah, by somebody, just by going
- 3:28Speaker 2: and watching somebody else. And my dad was there. My
- 3:32Speaker 2: dad was a Maryland State policeman, so he would always
- 3:34Speaker 2: go and he'd a lot of times he'd be working,
- 3:36Speaker 2: so he'd be in his uniform and he would stay
- 3:38Speaker 2: way away so nobody would see him. And they thought
- 3:41Speaker 2: at that time that I was a senior. So I
- 3:44Speaker 2: had another year and I wound up. It's funny. I
- 3:48Speaker 2: went up throwing my arm out, my shoulder out, throwing
- 3:51Speaker 2: snowballs at cars. How about that, you know? And I
- 3:54Speaker 2: thought went so my whole senior year.
- 3:56Speaker 3: By the way, we don't encourage that behavior, yeah, but
- 4:00Speaker 3: don't understand that's how you threw your shoulder out.
- 4:03Speaker 2: That's that's how we that's how we did. That's how
- 4:05Speaker 2: we stayed as a kid. But you know, I was
- 4:08Speaker 2: taking red hots. I had no idea about visiting a
- 4:10Speaker 2: doctor or any of that. But I was fine, you know,
- 4:12Speaker 2: I wound up pitching through it, and and I was
- 4:16Speaker 2: I was seventeen, So I was sixteen going into my
- 4:19Speaker 2: senior year in high school because I started early and
- 4:22Speaker 2: I graduated when I was seventeen, and that year I
- 4:27Speaker 2: was scouted. And then the draft was in June, and
- 4:31Speaker 2: it didn't matter how many how many rounds. And I
- 4:33Speaker 2: didn't know anything about the draft. I didn't, you know, nothing.
- 4:36Speaker 2: We went and played Legion ball. Like after my eleventh grade,
- 4:39Speaker 2: my junior year, my Legion ball team I got cut,
- 4:42Speaker 2: you know, after all I did was pitch and I
- 4:44Speaker 2: played outfield, played shortstop a little bit, and my Legion
- 4:48Speaker 2: team cut me. So I had to play little league.
- 4:50Speaker 2: I played little league baseball. It was like Catonsville Midget
- 4:53Speaker 2: League is what it was called. So I played that
- 4:55Speaker 2: whole my junior year, you know, as you know, a
- 4:59Speaker 2: little leaguer. And then my senior year, we and my
- 5:03Speaker 2: when we playing in the East Coast. We only had
- 5:05Speaker 2: twelve games. We didn't play a lot of games in
- 5:07Speaker 2: high school. And I pitched like nine of them. And
- 5:09Speaker 2: it wasn't nothing like, there wasn't a pitch count. So
- 5:13Speaker 2: there was games that I would strikeout seventeen and walk
- 5:15Speaker 2: like twelve. So it did. I probably threw two hundred pitches.
- 5:20Speaker 2: And one of the scouts, one of the scouts was
- 5:23Speaker 2: a dinner scout. His name was Bob Carter. I would
- 5:26Speaker 2: go and I did all the tryouts like the I
- 5:29Speaker 2: was like all county and then we went to a
- 5:32Speaker 2: Memorial stadium back then they like the Area Code games
- 5:35Speaker 2: or wherever. Yeah, So I scouted like Denny Nagel was
- 5:39Speaker 2: a part of that, Brian Jordan, there was a couple
- 5:42Speaker 2: others that were involved in that that wound up making
- 5:46Speaker 2: the big leagues. So I didn't know nothing about it.
- 5:49Speaker 2: And I only threw eighty four miles an hour back then,
- 5:51Speaker 2: you know, out of high school. I was sick. When
- 5:53Speaker 2: I graduated high school, I have six two, one hundred
- 5:55Speaker 2: and seventy five pounds and I threw eighty four miles
- 5:58Speaker 2: an hour. And that's when they actually clocked it went
- 6:01Speaker 2: across the plate not out of the hand now. So
- 6:05Speaker 2: when I got drafted, I was drafted in the twenty
- 6:07Speaker 2: second round by the Dodgers, and I got a Western Union.
- 6:12Speaker 2: That's how I knew that I got drafted. A Western
- 6:14Speaker 2: Union came to my house. My dad opened it up
- 6:17Speaker 2: and said, You've been drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgerton
- 6:19Speaker 2: in the twenty second round. And I was excited about it.
- 6:22Speaker 2: And my dad was always a big athlete and he
- 6:26Speaker 2: wanted he wanted me to sign. My mom wanted me
- 6:29Speaker 2: to go to college. I visited one school and that
- 6:31Speaker 2: was Old Dominion. An Old Dominion back then was the
- 6:36Speaker 2: manager over the head coaches, Mark Newman, and Dan Radison
- 6:40Speaker 2: was one of the coaches. And full circle, Mark Newman
- 6:44Speaker 2: wound up being the minor league coordinator for the Yankees,
- 6:48Speaker 2: and Dan Radison was the one of the instructors going
- 6:51Speaker 2: through the league. And that's when I went over there.
- 6:53Speaker 2: After I got traded from Seattle, all of a sudden,
- 6:56Speaker 2: this is the guy that recruited me out of high school.
- 6:58Speaker 2: And I wound up signed with the Dodgers in the
- 7:00Speaker 2: twenty second round, right, and when I went I went
- 7:03Speaker 2: to I signed late for what reason. I have no
- 7:07Speaker 2: idea I think I had. I got like a box
- 7:09Speaker 2: of box of baby roots and a pair of shoes.
- 7:12Speaker 2: Here you go, go play. And I went to Great Falls, Montana,
- 7:16Speaker 2: and I didn't do very well. I think my first
- 7:18Speaker 2: the first inning I pitched, I gave up like a
- 7:20Speaker 2: grand slam. I'm like, this isn't fun. But I was
- 7:24Speaker 2: seventeen years old. I was playing with a lot of
- 7:26Speaker 2: college kids. You know. My first three years, I went
- 7:30Speaker 2: from you know, from nineteen eighty four when I got drafted,
- 7:33Speaker 2: and then my first spring training. I was like a
- 7:35Speaker 2: baby giraffe. I grew from six to two to about
- 7:39Speaker 2: six six and a half six seven within like a
- 7:41Speaker 2: three four year, three two three year period, and then
- 7:45Speaker 2: gained like fifty pounds, and I also gained like ten
- 7:47Speaker 2: miles an hour on my fastball, and I had no
- 7:49Speaker 2: idea where it was going, you know. So I go,
- 7:52Speaker 2: I go my first spring training to the Dodgers, and
- 7:56Speaker 2: I really didn't know how to throw a breaking ball.
- 7:57Speaker 2: Everybody knows me for my big slider and all that,
- 8:00Speaker 2: but back then I had no clue. And I had
- 8:03Speaker 2: Don Drysdale, Sandy Cofax, Johnny podres Paranowski, the pitching coach.
- 8:12Speaker 2: There was like five Hall of Fame, you know, guys
- 8:15Speaker 2: who are trying to teach me how to throw a
- 8:17Speaker 2: breaking ball. You know, Sandy Kofax comes up saying, hey,
- 8:19Speaker 2: this is all held it. And he's not very big.
- 8:22Speaker 1: What is he like?
- 8:22Speaker 2: Five nine five ten? But his hand.
- 8:25Speaker 3: But I will say this about Kofax, Nelly, he's not
- 8:28Speaker 3: very tall. He's got the biggest hand, imaginable.
- 8:32Speaker 2: Imaginable when he wraps it all around the baseball, and
- 8:35Speaker 2: I'm like, I'm six six, I can't. I'm not. There's
- 8:37Speaker 2: no way I can wrap my hand around the baseball
- 8:39Speaker 2: and throw a breaking ball like you. So then you
- 8:43Speaker 2: know I work my way. You know, I played I
- 8:46Speaker 2: think two and a half years whatever it is with
- 8:49Speaker 2: the Dodgers, and I wound up getting rule five in
- 8:53Speaker 2: a minor league, Rule five by Seattle. So I go
- 8:56Speaker 2: to Seattle and I go to spring training, and and
- 9:01Speaker 2: oh my goodness. Pat Dobson, the late Pat Dompson, he
- 9:06Speaker 2: was the roving pitching instructor, and he finally came to
- 9:10Speaker 2: me said, hey, listen. He showed me a grip on
- 9:12Speaker 2: my breaking ball. And I always threw over top. I
- 9:14Speaker 2: didn't throw three quarters back then, and then I just
- 9:17Speaker 2: I just wound up sticking with that and it took
- 9:20Speaker 2: a long time. You know, it took a long time.
- 9:22Speaker 2: Through the minor leagues. I was always a starter, and
- 9:24Speaker 2: you know, one year, it was nineteen ninety, I got
- 9:28Speaker 2: sent back to a ball and Ross Grimsly wound not
- 9:32Speaker 2: being my pitching coach, and he goes, hey, we're going
- 9:34Speaker 2: to make you a closer. He said, well, you know
- 9:36Speaker 2: they're starting days are numbered, and it was. I mean,
- 9:38Speaker 2: I was one of those that I could always pitch
- 9:40Speaker 2: every day, but it didn't my velocity didn't last or
- 9:42Speaker 2: didn't you know, didn't go through. After three or four innings,
- 9:45Speaker 2: it started dropping. And then I and then all of
- 9:49Speaker 2: a sudden, I became a closer and it worked out.
- 9:53Speaker 2: In ninety then nineteen ninety one, I go to I
- 9:57Speaker 2: go to spring training and I go to Jacksonville and
- 10:02Speaker 2: that's in Double A. That was for the Mariners. And
- 10:04Speaker 2: I was always a big Denniscersly fan, and I used
- 10:08Speaker 2: to all of a sudden, one day I went to
- 10:10Speaker 2: I went on the side and said, hey, I want
- 10:11Speaker 2: to start throwing like Denis Acersly, and I started to
- 10:14Speaker 2: emulating him. So I started dropping down like three quarters,
- 10:18Speaker 2: and all of a sudden, my fastball started moving. I
- 10:21Speaker 2: was always about ninety two to ninety four. And then
- 10:24Speaker 2: once I threw my first slider, Jim Campanis, who was
- 10:27Speaker 2: Al Campanis, his grandson grandson was my catcher. He went
- 10:31Speaker 2: out to catch it and I hit him right in
- 10:32Speaker 2: the chest with my slider, and he goes, Okay, don't change.
- 10:36Speaker 2: And that's how I led the organization and saves that
- 10:38Speaker 2: year and went to Winter Ball and Puerto Rico, led
- 10:42Speaker 2: Puerto Rico and saves, and then the next year, ninety two,
- 10:45Speaker 2: I wound up being in the big leagues. I was like,
- 10:46Speaker 2: why didn't I just be a reliever? You know, a
- 10:49Speaker 2: long time I always.
- 10:50Speaker 3: Wanted to be like first, you should have started earlier, Nelly,
- 10:53Speaker 3: I think that I know the lesson.
- 10:54Speaker 1: I just learned it.
- 10:55Speaker 3: Hold on a second before we continue with it, now
- 10:57Speaker 3: that we got the background. So the other part of
- 11:00Speaker 3: what's great about what we do here is we have
- 11:02Speaker 3: a lot of subscribers that ask questions directly to you.
- 11:05Speaker 3: You've opened up like a million different doors for us
- 11:09Speaker 3: to walk down, which Justin and I will. But let's
- 11:11Speaker 3: get to a few of the questions, because those are
- 11:14Speaker 3: the important people here.
- 11:15Speaker 4: Go ahead, justin Yeah so so, Chan asks Sonela. You
- 11:19Speaker 4: were known for your great slider, and like many, had
- 11:22Speaker 4: elbow surgery. What advice would you give the young pitchers
- 11:24Speaker 4: about offspeed pitches?
- 11:27Speaker 2: Well, if you were I, you know, I was involved
- 11:30Speaker 2: with a lot of them youth baseball when I worked
- 11:32Speaker 2: at MLB dot Com a number of years. We do
- 11:34Speaker 2: all these tournaments. I would say, you know, it's tough
- 11:37Speaker 2: to stay away from a breaking ball because that's what
- 11:39Speaker 2: coaches love, and hitters can't hit it at nine, ten, eleven,
- 11:42Speaker 2: twelve years old. If you can, there's other ways to
- 11:46Speaker 2: manipulate the baseball, whether it's a two seam fastball to
- 11:49Speaker 2: get it moved, get it to move, or even a
- 11:52Speaker 2: change up. I would try to stay away with putting
- 11:54Speaker 2: a lot of pressure on your elbow at an early
- 11:57Speaker 2: age until you develop. You know, I didn't develop up
- 12:00Speaker 2: in fully until I was twenty one years old. So
- 12:02Speaker 2: these kids at eleven twelve years old, I mean, how
- 12:04Speaker 2: are they that developed to be snapping off breaking balls
- 12:07Speaker 2: every single pitch?
- 12:08Speaker 5: People dehydration sucks. Quint's electrolyte stick packs to the rescue.
- 12:14Speaker 5: I order them, I use them all of the time.
- 12:19Speaker 6: Somebody who may or may not have had some adult
- 12:20Speaker 6: beverages in their life. The next day, you know what flavor?
- 12:23Speaker 6: I like watermelon, and I don't like watermelon. I'll go
- 12:26Speaker 6: raspberry and it helps me to get my citrus salt in.
- 12:30Speaker 6: But if I do, it helps me to get back
- 12:32Speaker 6: to normal, feeling good and ready to go the next day.
- 12:35Speaker 5: Yep, tough workout or dry mouth in the morning, whatever
- 12:37Speaker 5: it is, this is going to help you out. Quint
- 12:40Speaker 5: always has the best deals for you. You can go

- 13:08Speaker 5: care or prevent any disease.
- 13:09Speaker 7: Right, Yeah, great stuff.
- 13:11Speaker 4: I want to go back really quick on the slot
- 13:14Speaker 4: because this is something that I'm intrigued by it and
- 13:17Speaker 4: I'm kind of going back to just the change. So
- 13:20Speaker 4: when you made that change and you started to get
- 13:22Speaker 4: feel on that, I'd love to hear your thoughts on
- 13:26Speaker 4: the the future of what you think in the slots,
- 13:30Speaker 4: because a lot of guys are now moving around trying
- 13:32Speaker 4: to figure out I mean, you know this, Nelly, but
- 13:35Speaker 4: they're trying to just get different angles right, and sometimes
- 13:38Speaker 4: it just clicks and it goes. I'd love your thoughts
- 13:41Speaker 4: on that and how that worked for you. And clearly
- 13:43Speaker 4: a fifteen year big league career, you know you were
- 13:47Speaker 4: you were so good, so effective. But what is if
- 13:50Speaker 4: a player wants to do that, what is your advice
- 13:54Speaker 4: on when to do that?
- 13:57Speaker 2: Well, you can do it at any time, you know.
- 13:59Speaker 2: If baseball is about adjustments anyway, you know matter even
- 14:02Speaker 2: in the big leagues. I mean, perfect example is Kyrin Jr.
- 14:05Speaker 2: How many times did he changed his stance throughout a year.
- 14:08Speaker 2: I mean he never had the same stance for two
- 14:10Speaker 2: weeks in a row. It was like this. Yeah, you're
- 14:17Speaker 2: probably right, I mean, you know, so it every whatever.
- 14:21Speaker 2: I changed at a late age only because I wasn't
- 14:23Speaker 2: going anywhere and I was like, hey, let me try
- 14:25Speaker 2: to throw like Dennis Ecrecy and see how that works.
- 14:28Speaker 2: You know, you don't see very many guys like what
- 14:31Speaker 2: is it Taylor or Tyler Watt Rogers sidearm writing it
- 14:35Speaker 2: almost sets his hands, you know, his knuckles on the ground.
- 14:37Speaker 2: You don't see many of those. That's that's something that
- 14:40Speaker 2: probably develops later in life, but as far as you don't,
- 14:43Speaker 2: and they also don't see a lot of guys that
- 14:45Speaker 2: throw like the Blue Jays, Pistres, trey Ya Savig like
- 14:49Speaker 2: way over top, almost like a canapul. You don't see
- 14:53Speaker 2: a lot of those guys. Usually it's like somewhere, you know,
- 14:55Speaker 2: somewhere in the three quarter angle, a little bit higher
- 14:58Speaker 2: than the three quarter angle, not submarine, but somewhere around there.
- 15:01Speaker 2: Like Sandy al Contra with the Marlins, he's about a
- 15:03Speaker 2: three quarter angle because he gets a lot of movement
- 15:05Speaker 2: on the baseball. I would say, you know, you change
- 15:10Speaker 2: when things don't go well and you're like, okay, I
- 15:12Speaker 2: really love this game. Okay, what can I do to
- 15:16Speaker 2: make me better? Okay, whether it's a hitting stance, whether
- 15:20Speaker 2: it's a young kid that you love a certain player,
- 15:22Speaker 2: because most most kids, I would think that they look
- 15:25Speaker 2: up to a big league player, and that's how they stand.
- 15:28Speaker 2: If you look at a little league hitter and they're saying, oh, well,
- 15:30Speaker 2: that looks like Albert Pools or whatever. They're always emulating
- 15:33Speaker 2: their heroes. You know. So in less things aren't going well,
- 15:38Speaker 2: you know, then don't change. But if they are, I mean,
- 15:40Speaker 2: if they are going well, don't change. But if they
- 15:42Speaker 2: aren't going well, then hey, try something new. You never
- 15:45Speaker 2: know when all of a sudden something clicks in and
- 15:47Speaker 2: the next thing you know, you just like skyrocket or
- 15:49Speaker 2: move so fast through the organization and then you have
- 15:52Speaker 2: you have success.
- 15:53Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 15:54Speaker 3: No, So I was just in Omaha and it's it's remarkable.
- 15:57Speaker 3: And Justin knows this because he works with a lot
- 15:58Speaker 3: of guys that are either moving around or getting into school.
- 16:02Speaker 3: So many of these kids literally in college, who are
- 16:05Speaker 3: you'd think somewhat developed, will then change an armslot and
- 16:09Speaker 3: pick up two or three miles an hour and a
- 16:11Speaker 3: whole bunch of either horizontal carry or vertical break whatever.
- 16:15Speaker 3: So it is an evolving process. But I do want
- 16:19Speaker 3: to get to another question from our subscribers and our teammates,
- 16:24Speaker 3: and then go back to the idea of when when
- 16:27Speaker 3: you're not going well, you change it because you were
- 16:29Speaker 3: going great and you pitched with rivera who never seemed
- 16:32Speaker 3: to change anything. But here's one from Don. If you're
- 16:35Speaker 3: evaluating a high school picture today, one of the first
- 16:37Speaker 3: three things you look for before velocity even enters the conversation.
- 16:41Speaker 3: And I will say, if you think velocity is number one,
- 16:45Speaker 3: then feel free to answer it that way.
- 16:48Speaker 2: Well, you know everybody's going to look at velocity because
- 16:51Speaker 2: that's what they that's what you know, That's what baseball
- 16:54Speaker 2: looks at now, you know. Unfortunately you know, and that's
- 16:59Speaker 2: why I have a heart of time with every with
- 17:01Speaker 2: the way they clock the speed. Now it's all out
- 17:04Speaker 2: of the hand, and I know technology has just gone
- 17:06Speaker 2: through the roof. They're able to do that. They're able
- 17:08Speaker 2: to do the spin rate. You talk about vertical rise.
- 17:12Speaker 2: No baseball in history rises, but it stays on the
- 17:17Speaker 2: a vertical rise stays on the same plane. So when
- 17:20Speaker 2: you have a pitcher and he breaks down, the ball
- 17:22Speaker 2: doesn't come like what we were taught. You stand tall
- 17:26Speaker 2: over the rubber, and you want the ball to go
- 17:28Speaker 2: down in the zone. When we played, we never wanted
- 17:29Speaker 2: the ball up in his zone because we would get hammered.
- 17:31Speaker 2: You wanted to, you know, get the ball down on
- 17:33Speaker 2: the ground, and that way you get more grounds, you
- 17:36Speaker 2: get more swing, amiss and a lot of times now
- 17:38Speaker 2: these guys break down their back leg and you get
- 17:41Speaker 2: a little bit more of that even plane at the
- 17:43Speaker 2: top of the zone, and it stays a lot longer.
- 17:45Speaker 2: So that's what they call the vertical rise, right. But
- 17:48Speaker 2: as far as what I would see in high school,
- 17:50Speaker 2: you know, yes, Unfortunately, velocity is always going to be
- 17:54Speaker 2: there with me. I mean, I'll just take myself. You know.
- 17:58Speaker 2: My scout looked at my dad, and my dad was six',
- 18:03Speaker 2: four like two hundred and, forty two hundred and fifty,
- 18:05Speaker 2: pounds and he was a cop AND i didn't shave
- 18:08Speaker 2: UNTIL i was twenty. One so it was, Like, okay he, sees,
- 18:11Speaker 2: okay this kid's going to wind up being a big,
- 18:12Speaker 2: kid AND i probably and somehow he knew THAT i
- 18:15Speaker 2: was going to, be you, know develop into a big a,
- 18:17Speaker 2: bigger bigger person and maybe become a bigger player and
- 18:21Speaker 2: have have better, skills AND i, did SO i. WOULD
- 18:24Speaker 2: i would probably look at. Genetics you, KNOW i would
- 18:26Speaker 2: look at this kid and, say, hey you, know what
- 18:28Speaker 2: does his parents look, like where do they come, from
- 18:31Speaker 2: what kind of athletic ability do they? Have and THEN i,
- 18:34Speaker 2: say you know, what this kid might have a. Chance
- 18:37Speaker 2: every scout's going to. End i'm sure justin you probably
- 18:39Speaker 2: see the same thing that's going to look velocity, first
- 18:42Speaker 2: mechanics you can work. WITH i think that's something that
- 18:45Speaker 2: if you have it in high, school hey, Perfect but
- 18:47Speaker 2: that can be that can be. Taught, unfortunately it's not
- 18:50Speaker 2: taught at the big league level. ENOUGH i would like
- 18:51Speaker 2: to see a lot. More but you, know in high
- 18:53Speaker 2: school and college and all that stuff is a lot,
- 18:55Speaker 2: better you, Know SO i, WOULD i. WOULD i would
- 18:58Speaker 2: probably look at their genetics first and see what kind
- 19:00Speaker 2: of athletes they, are what kind of athletes their parents,
- 19:02Speaker 2: Were and, also you, know unfortunately, baseball you, know a
- 19:07Speaker 2: lot of sports are played year. Round you. KNOW i
- 19:09Speaker 2: love when kids play three different. Sports when they hit, football,
- 19:12Speaker 2: basketball and they hit, baseball and that way they're giving
- 19:15Speaker 2: their muscles at each sport a little bit of. Rest you,
- 19:18Speaker 2: KNOW i would kind of look at that as.
- 19:19Speaker 1: Well, yeah you preached to the choir on.
- 19:21Speaker 7: That, YEAH i like it.
- 19:24Speaker 4: NOW i mean there's a lot of there's just so
- 19:26Speaker 4: many pieces out of that THAT i think are. Important
- 19:28Speaker 4: and we were talking before we hopped on here About
- 19:31Speaker 4: Max meyer right with The, marlins and you were talking
- 19:33Speaker 4: about the mound, presence and THAT i gravitate towards guys
- 19:37Speaker 4: that control a, mound that have the, presence that feel
- 19:41Speaker 4: you watch them and from a mile away you can
- 19:44Speaker 4: see the confidence just ooze out of, them right they
- 19:47Speaker 4: strut around the mound after a punch. Out can you
- 19:49Speaker 4: talk a little bit for the youngsters about moulm presence
- 19:53Speaker 4: because you had a really good.
- 19:54Speaker 7: One there was a lot of confidence.
- 19:56Speaker 4: There can you Talk can you talk to the youngsters
- 19:59Speaker 4: in the high school and even the college guys about
- 20:01Speaker 4: how you can like improve the mound presence and how
- 20:04Speaker 4: you did?
- 20:05Speaker 2: THAT i think the one thing and then you know
- 20:08Speaker 2: a lot of players Like Derek jeter is always you
- 20:10Speaker 2: know baseball's baseball is a game of failure and the
- 20:14Speaker 2: key to success is how how do you is adversity
- 20:17Speaker 2: and how you get over your? Failures you, know three
- 20:20Speaker 2: three out of, ten you're you're AN. Mvp you, know
- 20:23Speaker 2: you have a below forty R a and you know
- 20:25Speaker 2: it's it's you're a superstar. Pitcher it's the adversity the
- 20:30Speaker 2: times that you don't do. Well it's easy to ride
- 20:33Speaker 2: that wave at the top of the wave when you're
- 20:34Speaker 2: just you, know you have a few shutout, innings or
- 20:36Speaker 2: you have a few starts in a row that you're
- 20:39Speaker 2: just you, know you're an on cloud. Nine it's the
- 20:43Speaker 2: times that you don't do, well and how do you?
- 20:45Speaker 2: React you, know you get hit a little bit on the,
- 20:47Speaker 2: mound how do you. React do you let it get
- 20:50Speaker 2: to you because if that happens and everything snowballs and
- 20:53Speaker 2: you wind up giving up five six runs and you're you,
- 20:55Speaker 2: know two innings and you're you're out of the. Game
- 20:57Speaker 2: or do you sit there and, say, hey, okay a
- 21:00Speaker 2: couple of, hits maybe there's an error behind, you whatever it,
- 21:03Speaker 2: is and you try to pick up that. Player it's
- 21:05Speaker 2: not easy as a. Youngster it's not easy as a
- 21:07Speaker 2: rookie in. Baseball that's the hardest thing to do is
- 21:09Speaker 2: try to get over. ADVERSITY i, mean a lot of
- 21:11Speaker 2: these kids go through high, school college and then they
- 21:14Speaker 2: get to pro, ball where college and high school they've
- 21:17Speaker 2: had nothing but. Success they've never. Failed they were the
- 21:19Speaker 2: most they were the most dominant player on all those.
- 21:23Speaker 2: Teams and then when you get in the minor, leagues
- 21:24Speaker 2: then you start failing because you start playing against guys
- 21:27Speaker 2: that are either better than you or the. Same and
- 21:30Speaker 2: then the big leagues it's the. Same it's all about you,
- 21:32Speaker 2: Know Max, meyer for, instance it's taken a little. BIT i,
- 21:35Speaker 2: mean he's a young. Kid what is he twenty seven years.
- 21:37Speaker 2: Old it takes a little bit to learn not to
- 21:41Speaker 2: show your emotion to the other team or to that
- 21:44Speaker 2: hitter if you're getting, hit if you don't have your,
- 21:47Speaker 2: stuff don't let them know. It and it's tough to,
- 21:49Speaker 2: do you. Know Mariano rivera was a perfect example of
- 21:54Speaker 2: never too, high never too. Low you, know you never
- 21:56Speaker 2: knew if he had a good game most of the
- 21:58Speaker 2: time was all you, know all the time was all
- 22:00Speaker 2: a good. Game but if he did have a bad,
- 22:01Speaker 2: game he didn't know that. Either you, KNOW i always
- 22:04Speaker 2: watched WHEN i, PLAYED i Watched David, Cone Randy johnson
- 22:08Speaker 2: And Roger, clemens AND i watched them all the. Time
- 22:11Speaker 2: right you, Know Randy johnson was on my teammate for
- 22:14Speaker 2: a number of, years and Then cohen And Roger clemens
- 22:16Speaker 2: became my. Teammate BUT i wanted to know how they,
- 22:18Speaker 2: pitched how they, worked you, know what they did to face,
- 22:21Speaker 2: hitters how they you, know If i'm going to stay
- 22:23Speaker 2: in the big, LEAGUES i want to throw like these,
- 22:25Speaker 2: guys OR i want to pitch like these guys and
- 22:26Speaker 2: try to intimidate hitters and not let the other team
- 22:30Speaker 2: know That i'm getting. Rattled and it's tough to do
- 22:32Speaker 2: because you can say, it but it's really it takes
- 22:36Speaker 2: a long time to.
- 22:37Speaker 3: Learn all, Right, nolly let's continue with the question. Here
- 22:40Speaker 3: we got one that comes in from let's Say Mark,
- 22:44Speaker 3: DAVIS i think is the one we're going to go.
- 22:46Speaker 3: To it, says you now watch baseball differently as an.
- 22:49Speaker 3: Analyst what's something fans think they understand about the game
- 22:53Speaker 3: that maybe they actually. Don't and that's a very good.
- 22:57Speaker 2: Question, yeah, well well one of them is the, speed
- 22:59Speaker 2: AND i think IT'S i think it's, tough AND i
- 23:02Speaker 2: don't know. Why maybe you guys have a better answer for.
- 23:04Speaker 2: THIS i don't know why all, this AND i know
- 23:06Speaker 2: technology is part of, it and how they can measure.
- 23:09Speaker 2: Velocity i've always had a hard time AND i think
- 23:13Speaker 2: it doesn't do it. Doesn't it's not a good lesson
- 23:16Speaker 2: for young kids to show when somebody's throwing on a
- 23:19Speaker 2: hundred miles an hour and all of a, sudden a
- 23:21Speaker 2: twelve year old, SAYS i better be able to throw
- 23:23Speaker 2: ninety some miles an hour BEFORE i even get looked.
- 23:25Speaker 2: At how DO i do? That they measure it out of.
- 23:29Speaker 2: Hand so somebody that's throwing one hundred miles an, hour
- 23:31Speaker 2: it's not one hundred miles an hour when it crosses a.
- 23:33Speaker 2: Plate AND i don't think fans understand. That they just
- 23:36Speaker 2: see one hundred or ninety nine up on the scoreboard
- 23:39Speaker 2: and it's it's about five or six miles an. Hour
- 23:41Speaker 2: the harder you, throw the more you take off crossing the.
- 23:44Speaker 2: Plate AND i just WISH i don't know why they do,
- 23:47Speaker 2: that BECAUSE i know. IT i know it probably hurts young,
- 23:49Speaker 2: kids it hurts high school. Kids and justin you're probably
- 23:52Speaker 2: involved in all, this and as far as the way you,
- 23:54Speaker 2: know you're scouting or whatever, it's you know these kids
- 23:57Speaker 2: are like. Velocity how DO i gain? It how DO
- 23:59Speaker 2: i gain? It and you know i'd rather see someone
- 24:03Speaker 2: be able to fill up the strike zone and learn
- 24:05Speaker 2: to pitch to both sides of the plate at ninety
- 24:08Speaker 2: two to ninety four miles an. Hour And i've seen
- 24:10Speaker 2: more guys have success like that than somebody rearing back
- 24:14Speaker 2: and trying to throw ninety eight miles an hour and
- 24:15Speaker 2: have no idea where the ball is.
- 24:17Speaker 1: Going, yeah Miss, justin you love.
- 24:19Speaker 3: This TODAY i was out playing pick a ball and
- 24:21Speaker 3: there was a little league game going on in the
- 24:23Speaker 3: field right next to WHERE i. Was SO i went
- 24:26Speaker 3: over there And i'm sitting there And i'm talking to
- 24:29Speaker 3: some mom AND i, said, wow you know what a neat.
- 24:34Speaker 3: Game and she, said that's my son out there who's.
- 24:36Speaker 3: Pitching AND i saw one, INNING i saw half an
- 24:38Speaker 3: in it before we had to go.
- 24:40Speaker 1: Home the bell was ringing for.
- 24:41Speaker 3: Dinner BUT i, said, well that is fantastic because you
- 24:44Speaker 3: know what your son is, doing which is so, important
- 24:46Speaker 3: throwing strikes like he's throwing. Striping he's, pitching he's throwing
- 24:51Speaker 3: the ball over the. Plate he clearly isn't, throwing you,
- 24:53Speaker 3: know seventy miles an. Hour and there's nothing more refreshing
- 24:57Speaker 3: or discouraging than somebody that gets a AT o two
- 25:01Speaker 3: and starts nibbling and ends up three two or trying
- 25:03Speaker 3: to like you just, Said nelly. Overthrowing so, YEAH i
- 25:07Speaker 3: did what Theo epstein And justin SAID i should do
- 25:10Speaker 3: WHEN i saw a litleague.
- 25:11Speaker 7: GAME i love.
- 25:12Speaker 1: It, yeah we, go, man there we.
- 25:16Speaker 7: GO i like. It, Yeah And nelly kind of going
- 25:18Speaker 7: back to the pitch.
- 25:20Speaker 4: Ability it's Something i'm here in way more now in
- 25:23Speaker 4: the last year to two. Years it's just maybe there's
- 25:26Speaker 4: a little bit of a flow back to the pitch,
- 25:29Speaker 4: ability especially at the college. Level and we're seeing this
- 25:31Speaker 4: right You ravy covering. It you, know you look into
- 25:34Speaker 4: the College World series and the different. Assortment now you
- 25:37Speaker 4: have the big arms with the big, velo no, doubt
- 25:40Speaker 4: but you have a lot of different types of pitchers in,
- 25:43Speaker 4: there and a lot of it comes down to the
- 25:46Speaker 4: secondary stuff, Too. Nelly, Right so that's a big thing for,
- 25:49Speaker 4: me is just understanding the feel for the. Pitches AND
- 25:52Speaker 4: i think as any young kid listening and any high school,
- 25:56Speaker 4: KID i, mean you have to have feel for the
- 25:58Speaker 4: secondary stuff. Too, nelly what was your development like with
- 26:03Speaker 4: that before we get to some more questions here from
- 26:05Speaker 4: our teammates, Here But what was your development like with
- 26:08Speaker 4: the secondary, stuff because you talked about the slider obviously
- 26:12Speaker 4: years was, dominant especially from the. Slot what was that
- 26:16Speaker 4: development like for you as you kind of entered into
- 26:19Speaker 4: pro ball in learning how to pitch.
- 26:21Speaker 7: With some of that secondary stuff that you.
- 26:23Speaker 2: Had, yeah a lot of. It WHEN i mean being six,'
- 26:26Speaker 2: six i mean you see a lot of. Tall pitchers
- 26:27Speaker 2: the toughest thing that they have or they is repeating.
- 26:31Speaker 2: Their mechanics and THAT'S something i worked on CONSTANTLY because i,
- 26:34Speaker 2: you KNOW whether i was, playing catch, YOU know i
- 26:36Speaker 2: would go down and a lot of times throw maybe
- 26:39Speaker 2: twenty twenty five minute, pitch bullpens just trying to repeat
- 26:43Speaker 2: my mechanics as that was the biggest thing that would throw.
- 26:45Speaker 2: Me off as LONG as i was mechanically sound over,
- 26:47Speaker 2: the rubber breaking my hands and all these different different
- 26:51Speaker 2: POINTS that i had to be able to, throw STRIKES
- 26:54Speaker 2: then i. Was okay but it, was constant. Constant practice
- 26:57Speaker 2: and that's WHY when i, Broadcast now i'm a big.
- 26:59Speaker 2: Mechanic guy whatever goes wrong at the plate always starts at.
- 27:03Speaker 2: The rubber and so whether it's not, staying back it's
- 27:06Speaker 2: not breaking, your hands that's something that always had to
- 27:09Speaker 2: concentrate with even with the breaking ball on, the slider
- 27:12Speaker 2: you always had to stay. On top you always had to,
- 27:14Speaker 2: stay back stay on top of. The baseball, You know
- 27:17Speaker 2: i'm sure it happens, in COLLEGE but i See more
- 27:20Speaker 2: major LEAGUERS and ravi you probably see it. As well
- 27:23Speaker 2: when you go through their arsenal and you have guys
- 27:27Speaker 2: that throw eight. Different pitches, i'm like are you? Kidding
- 27:30Speaker 2: me what are we doing with eight? Different pitches AND
- 27:33Speaker 2: how i don't care what kind of athlete. You are
- 27:37Speaker 2: how can you master eight? Different pitches there's. No way
- 27:40Speaker 2: why don't YOU pick i mean, Both FASTBALLS so i
- 27:43Speaker 2: consider two seam four seam fast it's. A fastball it's
- 27:46Speaker 2: nothing just as long as you stay on top of
- 27:48Speaker 2: the two seams going to move four seams usually going
- 27:50Speaker 2: to stay a little straight or it depends on your.
- 27:52Speaker 2: Release point but have, the fastball have, the slider, purball change,
- 27:56Speaker 2: you know have, four pitches master four pitches instead OF
- 27:59Speaker 2: oh i need, A cutter i need now they call it.
- 28:02Speaker 2: A sweeper, YOU know, I need i need a, CURVE
- 28:05Speaker 2: ball i need. A split, i mean these guys are
- 28:07Speaker 2: coming up, with, six, seven, eight nine different pitches and
- 28:10Speaker 2: they can't even master three. Of them, you know cut.
- 28:13Speaker 2: It out it's way, too many. You know you know
- 28:15Speaker 2: when somebody throws, a slider a cutter and, a sweeper
- 28:19Speaker 2: why you know that doesn't make sense. To me, you know,
- 28:23Speaker 2: for one there's no way that maybe one of those
- 28:26Speaker 2: pitches you might be able to. Throw consistently the other
- 28:29Speaker 2: two scrap them because they.
- 28:31Speaker 3: DON'T work i WANT to i really want to get
- 28:33Speaker 3: TO the i want to get To the mariana through.
- 28:35Speaker 3: One pitch and you you. Threw that you invented, the
- 28:38Speaker 3: sweeper and now everybody calls it. A SWEEPER but i
- 28:40Speaker 3: got a table that for. A second here's a good
- 28:42Speaker 3: one from Your Buddy, scotty brown, Who, says nellie it's been.
- 28:45Speaker 3: A minute if you could go back, in time what
- 28:47Speaker 3: would you tell The Rookie jeff nelson about his?
- 28:51Speaker 1: Journey?
- 28:51Speaker 2: Ahead wow oh, MY goodness I was i wash. My
- 29:02Speaker 2: wow that's THAT'S something i never. Thought about that That
- 29:05Speaker 2: was why does he have to answer that we Did
- 29:08Speaker 2: The Juco world series Out In, Grand junction, Colorado together SCOTTIE,
- 29:13Speaker 2: And i, oh yeah this is a long time agoating
- 29:18Speaker 2: that in two thousand and, fort yeah it was great.
- 29:20Speaker 2: Twenty FOURTEEN maybe i don't know when it.
- 29:22Speaker 3: Was Thirteen, so nelly you think about. That answer i'll
- 29:25Speaker 3: just tell the quick. Little stuff because one of the
- 29:27Speaker 3: things that they do With The College world series is
- 29:29Speaker 3: they'll sit the players down in the stands and they'll
- 29:32Speaker 3: give them, a phone like literally a, fake phone and
- 29:36Speaker 3: they will have the kids talk to themselves today, like,
- 29:40Speaker 3: saying hey, you know what is it about you being
- 29:44Speaker 3: At The world series that you didn't know ten years
- 29:46Speaker 3: ago when you Were playing? Little league and then they
- 29:49Speaker 3: start to say to themselves the hard work really, paid
- 29:52Speaker 3: off all those, long trips the times where the uniform didn't,
- 29:56Speaker 3: FIT well i didn't like, the coach and lo, and
- 29:58Speaker 3: behold here you, are pitching, you know for a national
- 30:02Speaker 3: championship or you've made It. To omaha so that's almost
- 30:05Speaker 3: the inverse of what they. Didn't know then this is
- 30:09Speaker 3: the question similar to that, of well what would you
- 30:11Speaker 3: tell your rookie self that you never would have thought
- 30:14Speaker 3: about through your journey to Being a mariner Or a
- 30:17Speaker 3: yankee or, you know some some other team at the
- 30:20Speaker 3: end of, your, career, like well what would what were
- 30:22Speaker 3: you most?
- 30:22Speaker 2: Surprised about maybe be a little bit SMARTER when i
- 30:26Speaker 2: spoke to the media ABOUT what I what. I said,
- 30:28Speaker 2: YOU know I sometimes i put my foot in, my
- 30:30Speaker 2: mouth maybe that maybe maybe a few things. Like that
- 30:33Speaker 2: but as far AS my i wish my journey in
- 30:36Speaker 2: the minor leagues were, a lot a, lot less but
- 30:38Speaker 2: it was always for. A REASON so i spent eight
- 30:41Speaker 2: years in the minor leagues for. A reason AND once
- 30:43Speaker 2: i got to the, big leagues, YOU know i was
- 30:45Speaker 2: finally THERE and i wasn't. GOING down i wasn't going
- 30:48Speaker 2: to let anybody send. ME down i always wanted to
- 30:50Speaker 2: always strive to be, the BEST and i didn't want.
- 30:53Speaker 2: TO watch i wanted to pitch in all every single.
- 30:56Speaker 2: Tough situation. YOU know i didn't want to, be that,
- 30:59Speaker 2: you know, back then the twenty fifth man on. THE
- 31:02Speaker 2: roster i wanted to be the first guy up into,
- 31:04Speaker 2: the BULLPEN and i wanted to, be in, you know
- 31:06Speaker 2: in any kind. Of SITUATION but i think just getting You,
- 31:09Speaker 2: because seattle we didn't have a lot. OF media, i
- 31:11Speaker 2: mean our three guys that would, covered us they put
- 31:15Speaker 2: on shorts AND a t shirt and shag during. Early
- 31:18Speaker 2: hitting so that was, our media and they weren't going to.
- 31:21Speaker 2: Write anything they weren't going to write anything poorly about
- 31:24Speaker 2: to play about. The players but once you Got To,
- 31:26Speaker 2: new york then you have like twenty five thirty people
- 31:28Speaker 2: and they can't wait for you to say, Something wrong
- 31:30Speaker 2: and OF course i did a.

- 32:33Speaker 7: GOOD good i want to go back on.
- 32:36Speaker 4: That though now let's go back To the, MARINERS obviously
- 32:40Speaker 4: i mean some superstars that you. PLAYED with i get
- 32:43Speaker 4: to go to Ninety. Five man ninety five is one
- 32:45Speaker 4: of the iconic teams. In, History right it's one of
- 32:49Speaker 4: my favorite.
- 32:49Speaker 7: Teams all of.
- 32:50Speaker 4: ALL time i was a little kid at, the time
- 32:52Speaker 4: but just sort of. Riveting baseball the whole journey of
- 32:55Speaker 4: it was like gripping and there was a. Chemistry there
- 32:58Speaker 4: can you just share a little bit about that ninety
- 33:01Speaker 4: five team and what that was like inside?
- 33:04Speaker 2: The, clubhouse yeah, you know it was the best spring
- 33:07Speaker 2: training ever because we came off of Strike if west
- 33:09Speaker 2: spring training for, a reliever because it was only thirty
- 33:11Speaker 2: days and then all of a sudden we went right into.
- 33:13Speaker 2: The season, you know we always you Always Had, randy
- 33:18Speaker 2: johnson who was the best pitcher in. The game, You
- 33:20Speaker 2: Know Ken, griffey junior best player in. The game then
- 33:23Speaker 2: You Throw edgar martinez maybe the best right handed hitter in. The,
- 33:26Speaker 2: Game Yeah jay Bune Or. MIKE blawers, i mean so
- 33:29Speaker 2: we had a lot of, great Players And chris bosio,
- 33:33Speaker 2: was there it was one of our. Great starters we
- 33:37Speaker 2: kind of like hung around and this whole thing about, You.
- 33:40Speaker 2: Know seattle the local government, wasn't approving, you know didn't approve.
- 33:46Speaker 2: A stadium so Where was seattle going? To go and we, were,
- 33:50Speaker 2: all okay this is probably our last Year. In seattle
- 33:53Speaker 2: we were going to Go To saint pete and this
- 33:55Speaker 2: is we're going to be A rag we're going to
- 33:56Speaker 2: Be The devil rays. Back then and then all of,
- 33:58Speaker 2: a sudden Right, in july We Got, Vince coleman We Got,
- 34:03Speaker 2: Andy Bennis NORM charlton i think either came back to
- 34:07Speaker 2: us or was there, with us and all of a sudden.
- 34:10Speaker 2: We started, you know we always had a great team
- 34:12Speaker 2: as far, as chemistry and We Had, lou PANELLA who
- 34:16Speaker 2: i think should Be a Hall of famer and he
- 34:18Speaker 2: was one of the best Managers that i've ever played
- 34:21Speaker 2: for Him And, joe tory and, you know there was,
- 34:24Speaker 2: one time and it Was. IN august i think it
- 34:26Speaker 2: was like in the Beginning of august that we had
- 34:28Speaker 2: a team meeting in the weight room and we went
- 34:29Speaker 2: around and everybody was there and, you know, you look
- 34:32Speaker 2: you have the fastest guy Now In. Vince coleman it
- 34:34Speaker 2: was incredible at his age to watch him over at
- 34:37Speaker 2: first base and how he knew when pitchers were coming
- 34:39Speaker 2: over in. Steel bases AND then i Think the angels
- 34:43Speaker 2: HAD maybe i know it was a DOUBLE digit i
- 34:45Speaker 2: don't know whether it was twelve or fifteen game lead,
- 34:47Speaker 2: over us and we just, started playing playing as, a
- 34:50Speaker 2: team and all of, a Sudden the kingdome, back then
- 34:53Speaker 2: we just started getting more and more people coming in to.
- 34:55Speaker 2: Watch us and that was the loudest stadium that ever
- 34:59Speaker 2: been a. PART of, i mean you had forty fifty some,
- 35:01Speaker 2: thousand people and we just started playing really well together
- 35:05Speaker 2: and all of, a Sudden the angels started falling and
- 35:07Speaker 2: we just started feeding off of. The atmosphere and in
- 35:11Speaker 2: that year we had We Lost Ken griffey JUNIOR for
- 35:13Speaker 2: i think. Two months he went made a catch in
- 35:15Speaker 2: center field broke. His ankle and we had a Guy
- 35:18Speaker 2: Named alex diaz that played center field and played a great.
- 35:21Speaker 2: Center field so defensively we really didn't lose a. Whole,
- 35:23Speaker 2: lot offensively we obviously, we did but the guys, stepped up,
- 35:29Speaker 2: you know the guy, you know different players just stepped
- 35:31Speaker 2: up at, certain times and, you know we, wound up,
- 35:35Speaker 2: you know going all the way to those last. Four
- 35:37Speaker 2: games they were Playing, the A's the, angels were we Were,
- 35:40Speaker 2: playing texas and all we had to do was like
- 35:42Speaker 2: win one. Or whatever they Swept the a's and we
- 35:45Speaker 2: had that one game playoff and it was the most
- 35:47Speaker 2: exciting time, because nobody nobody on our team. Or not
- 35:51Speaker 2: maybe a couple guys have to had, playoff experience but
- 35:54Speaker 2: everybody else is all NEW and i and that run
- 35:57Speaker 2: Helped keep seattle or Helped keep Mariners in Seattle base it. Was, exciting.
- 36:03Speaker 3: Yeah kept, it there and then of course next year
- 36:06Speaker 3: you're pitching for the, other team and then you go
- 36:08Speaker 3: on this run Of Four.
- 36:09Speaker 1: World series what what led To The new?
- 36:12Speaker 3: York deal and how difficult was it to leave what
- 36:15Speaker 3: was Ninety? Five mariners and you probably Knew the yankees
- 36:19Speaker 3: were damn good because of what they did in nineteen,
- 36:21Speaker 3: Ninety five and You Mentioned, joe, Tory like i'm just
- 36:24Speaker 3: curious what it's like. For again and this speaks to
- 36:27Speaker 3: parents whose kids have to transition from one team, to
- 36:30Speaker 3: another one school.
- 36:31Speaker 1: To another, you know how how do you? Do that
- 36:34Speaker 1: how do you make? It comfortable or who helps you make?
- 36:37Speaker 2: It? Work, yeah well you know back then. We didn't,
- 36:40Speaker 2: you know you had to make. It WORK and i
- 36:44Speaker 2: loved Pitching In. NEW york i loved. The atmosphere, you
- 36:47Speaker 2: know it was just chaotic every time you took the
- 36:49Speaker 2: mound or even in the outfield during. Batting practice it
- 36:52Speaker 2: was just An old. Yankee stadium it was just a.
- 36:54Speaker 2: Special place and even as a VISITOR before i Came,
- 36:57Speaker 2: a YANKEE when i Was, in Seattle and seattle had
- 36:59Speaker 2: a large, fan base so they would do these caravans
- 37:02Speaker 2: and they would Go, to canada they would Go, to
- 37:05Speaker 2: idaho they would Go, to oregon and they also Went.
- 37:09Speaker 2: To ALASKA and i went to every SINGLE caravan i Lived,
- 37:12Speaker 2: in seattle and THE one i never went To. Was
- 37:14Speaker 2: Alaska So dan WILSON and i we WENT right i
- 37:17Speaker 2: think was Sometime. In november we Went to Fairbanks and
- 37:21Speaker 2: anchorage and our last Stop was Juno, the capitol and
- 37:26Speaker 2: then there were three. Of us It Was, tina, martinez
- 37:28Speaker 2: Myself And, mike blowers and the papers kept, saying, that
- 37:31Speaker 2: well one of them has to go because the other
- 37:33Speaker 2: two were eligible for arbitration and they're not going to
- 37:36Speaker 2: be able to afford. All Three So mike blowers got
- 37:39Speaker 2: traded right away To. The DODGERS so, i, Figured okay
- 37:41Speaker 2: TINA and i, were staying and we're going, to have,
- 37:43Speaker 2: you know be able to come back and see if
- 37:44Speaker 2: we can go a little. Bit further and then all of,
- 37:46Speaker 2: a sudden all of, a sudden my last day on,
- 37:49Speaker 2: THAT caravan i get a Call From, bob watson who
- 37:51Speaker 2: WAS a gm From, the yankees And Then woody woodward
- 37:54Speaker 2: who WAS a gm For, the mariners, and said we
- 37:56Speaker 2: just traded. For YOU and i still had one day
- 37:58Speaker 2: left on, the caravan, you know SO, so i, you
- 38:02Speaker 2: KNOW was. I happy, YOU know, i guess, you know
- 38:05Speaker 2: you could have gone to. Worse PLACES and i, Was,
- 38:07Speaker 2: Like wow i'm going to Become. A yankee we just
- 38:09Speaker 2: beat them in. The PLAYOFFS so i, was like, you
- 38:12Speaker 2: Know if i'm gonna, have traded you might as well
- 38:13Speaker 2: get traded. To THEM so i WENT and I Asked
- 38:16Speaker 2: bob watson because he was the. LAST call, i, Said
- 38:17Speaker 2: listen i'm on a marin. HER caravan, i, SAID okay
- 38:19Speaker 2: i have one. More day, you know because we spoke
- 38:21Speaker 2: with kids. In RADIO so i went up finishing the
- 38:24Speaker 2: caravan As. A yankee and then, you know, so yeah
- 38:30Speaker 2: and then you keep hearing About the, tino thing and,
- 38:32Speaker 2: you know it was Like, LOU panella i guess Went
- 38:35Speaker 2: To tino martinez, and, said hey, you Know the mariners
- 38:38Speaker 2: are going to. Trade you are there certain teams that
- 38:41Speaker 2: you would like to? Go TO and I think tino Picked,
- 38:43Speaker 2: the Yankees the cubs and there was, another team and
- 38:46Speaker 2: being being A former Yankee, with panela he tried to
- 38:48Speaker 2: make that happen and, he DID and I think i
- 38:51Speaker 2: loo from what he was. Telling me, he, SAID well
- 38:53Speaker 2: i had no idea that you were going to, be
- 38:54Speaker 2: involved and all of, a Sudden when tino, got traded the,
- 38:57Speaker 2: next thing you. Were added he, was like are you?
- 38:59Speaker 2: KIDDING me i didn't want that, to happen, HE said
- 39:01Speaker 2: I knew tina, was going BUT then i go To
- 39:04Speaker 2: the inkies and it's a bunch of GUYS that i.
- 39:06Speaker 2: Faced Before and TINA and i played together from nineteen
- 39:08Speaker 2: eighty nine all the way to, two thousand, you know
- 39:11Speaker 2: so we were teammates for a, long time so that part.
- 39:14Speaker 2: Was easy but it was a little bit different going
- 39:17Speaker 2: and putting the pinstripes on with all the history and
- 39:19Speaker 2: and that that was, you know that was that was
- 39:22Speaker 2: some knee knocking, right there going to spring training and
- 39:24Speaker 2: putting the. Pinstripes on i'm sure.
- 39:26Speaker 7: That's cool.
- 39:27Speaker 4: That's cool LET'S let's i appreciate the thought, On that
- 39:30Speaker 4: nelly and all. The backgrounds there's obviously so many stories.
- 39:33Speaker 4: WITHIN that i want to get to another teammate question
- 39:36Speaker 4: here as we kind of flow. Through This so, royce
- 39:40Speaker 4: asked is it True the yankees bullpen had a game
- 39:42Speaker 4: called pass it on where you. Guys smacked you guys
- 39:45Speaker 4: got smacked in that you got the clap after.
- 39:48Speaker 7: Big, PLAY.
- 39:50Speaker 2: Oh i wonder. TO know i want to know how
- 39:52Speaker 2: he found that out because that. Was usual It's like
- 39:55Speaker 2: vegas in. The bullpen whatever happens down there, stage there,
- 39:59Speaker 2: That's right but that that all Happened When john wetland
- 40:03Speaker 2: was down in. The bullpen so, you know as, a
- 40:06Speaker 2: reliever you're, you know you were always the. Setup guys
- 40:09Speaker 2: that was, either seventh d, eighth inning or say sometimes. Sixth
- 40:12Speaker 2: innings so you paid attention to the, you know the first,
- 40:15Speaker 2: five innings but you, really didn't but you, you know
- 40:18Speaker 2: so we always had a game if if something positive
- 40:22Speaker 2: happens with, our team you had, to clap and you
- 40:25Speaker 2: kind of either either. Golf clap you didn't want a
- 40:27Speaker 2: loud one because you wanted to see if the, other
- 40:29Speaker 2: team your other you other bullpen guys would. Do it
- 40:31Speaker 2: and if, somebody didn't then all of, a sudden, You
- 40:34Speaker 2: Know john wetland or somebody else would either slap him
- 40:37Speaker 2: in the face because you had to do it. Right
- 40:38Speaker 2: away and if you didn't do it, right away then
- 40:41Speaker 2: then all of a sudden it was like pass, it down,
- 40:43Speaker 2: you know all of a sudden that guy would get
- 40:45Speaker 2: slapped or you take him and you just throw him
- 40:48Speaker 2: up against. The wall it's like. Stupid stuff. You know
- 40:50Speaker 2: we would flick seeds at, each other but we would
- 40:54Speaker 2: like there was a lot of reindeer games that aren't
- 40:56Speaker 2: our Bullpen Coast tony klotager he had his back turned
- 41:00Speaker 2: to his NonStop at least through the first five or,
- 41:04Speaker 2: six innings and he didn't want to know anything about
- 41:07Speaker 2: what went on? Behind?
- 41:08Speaker 3: Him, right hey let me Ask. This nelly you know You,
- 41:12Speaker 3: mentioned wetland You had. Rivera there money is generally reserved
- 41:17Speaker 3: for like, starting pitching like that's what it always was,
- 41:20Speaker 3: in baseball and yet you seem to really relish. This
- 41:23Speaker 3: role maybe That's where torri. Wanted you Obviously with, rivera's
- 41:26Speaker 3: success you weren't going to be the closer there for
- 41:31Speaker 3: parents whose kids are not going to be, the star
- 41:33Speaker 3: but they're going, to be, you know the number two or.
- 41:36Speaker 3: Three pitcher how did you go about accepting your role
- 41:39Speaker 3: and then perfecting your role when MAYBE and i don't
- 41:42Speaker 3: want to put words in, your mouth but it's not
- 41:44Speaker 3: exactly THE role i thought i'd. BE in, I like
- 41:47Speaker 3: i never started the game in the? Major LEAGUES am
- 41:49Speaker 3: i going to do that?
- 41:50Speaker 2: One? Time YEAH well i closed in the minor leagues
- 41:53Speaker 2: and THEN when i went on my first big, league
- 41:55Speaker 2: year my schooler was a closer For the MARINERS and
- 41:57Speaker 2: i but, YOU know i loved coming in with MENTAL
- 42:04Speaker 2: base i loved coming in when there when there was.
- 42:06Speaker 2: Presser situations we didn't come in a lot of times
- 42:09Speaker 2: when it WAS grand, Boyd Myself Mike Stanton. Merro mendoza,
- 42:14Speaker 2: you know, those guys we we we never really came
- 42:16Speaker 2: in with, clean innings and we we loved setting up
- 42:22Speaker 2: the best pitcher in, the game and That Was. Mariano rivera,
- 42:25Speaker 2: you know it does take a certain mentality pitch the.
- 42:29Speaker 2: Ninth inning it takes a certain mentality to pitch the
- 42:31Speaker 2: ninth Inning In, new york, you know not and you
- 42:34Speaker 2: know it might be a little bit easier, somewhere else
- 42:36Speaker 2: but not back AT THE I O. Yankee stadium it was.
- 42:38Speaker 2: Very DIFFICULT when i was a. Free agent, YOU know
- 42:41Speaker 2: i had a chance to go to other places, and
- 42:43Speaker 2: CLOSE but i DIDN'T because i wanted. To win, YOU
- 42:45Speaker 2: know i loved going to. THE playoffs i loved winning
- 42:49Speaker 2: and either that that Time, was hey your role is
- 42:52Speaker 2: the seventh and eighth inning to get tough right. Handers out,
- 42:56Speaker 2: you know whether It Was joe Torri Or, lou panella
- 42:58Speaker 2: they KNEW that i was the guy to. DO that
- 43:00Speaker 2: i relished THAT and i handed it over to, the
- 43:02Speaker 2: closer you Know those, you know we had twenty, five
- 43:06Speaker 2: guys and every single guy knew their role on, the
- 43:08Speaker 2: team whether it was a role player Like A darryl
- 43:10Speaker 2: strawberry Or cecil field or when. They didn't when we,
- 43:13Speaker 2: got them we didn't play. A whole, i mean they
- 43:14Speaker 2: were like, utility players and they accepted that because when
- 43:17Speaker 2: they had, Their Opportunity, charlie hayes when they had, their opportunity,
- 43:20Speaker 2: you know they made the best. Of it and SO
- 43:23Speaker 2: when i got called in the seventh or, EIGHTH inning i, Was,
- 43:25Speaker 2: Like okay i'm going to try to do, my JOB
- 43:27Speaker 2: and i. ENJOYED it i loved IT because i wanted
- 43:29Speaker 2: to WIN and i could have closed, somewhere ELSE but
- 43:32Speaker 2: i probably wasn't going.
- 43:32Speaker 1: To win, Good answer, great.
- 43:34Speaker 4: ANSWER man i want to, ask, you Obviously having Ben
- 43:38Speaker 4: in seattle and Going To new york totally star, studded,
- 43:42Speaker 4: teams right what was it like around all of? THE
- 43:47Speaker 4: superstars i mean we're talking about some of the megas
- 43:50Speaker 4: STARS in mlb history that you got a chance to.
- 43:53Speaker 4: Play with what was that like as a teammate was
- 43:57Speaker 4: it was it something where those guys were treated different
- 44:01Speaker 4: or you felt different, about them or did they kind
- 44:04Speaker 4: of blend themselves in really well and make you feel
- 44:07Speaker 4: like they were a part of.
- 44:08Speaker 2: The, team yeah everybody. Blended in, you know we had
- 44:12Speaker 2: such great chemistry in. Both places, you Know, with seattle
- 44:15Speaker 2: it was very easy to play because the media level
- 44:18Speaker 2: was not not as High As. New york the pressures
- 44:21Speaker 2: to win wasn't high as High As new york because
- 44:23Speaker 2: then they didn't make the playoffs. Very often in two
- 44:27Speaker 2: thousand and one when we won one hundred and sixty,
- 44:29Speaker 2: sixteen games, you know each ye row was a rookie
- 44:31Speaker 2: and just, witnessing that, you know and. Spring training it Was,
- 44:34Speaker 2: like elvis but he blended in and we knew we
- 44:37Speaker 2: had tons. Of superstars but, you, know EVERYBODY like, i
- 44:40Speaker 2: mentioned everybody did their job and you were. A superstar
- 44:42Speaker 2: i guess in that inning that you pinched and you
- 44:44Speaker 2: had a superstar at shortstop or wherever. It was but
- 44:46Speaker 2: we had great. Team chemistry and baseball is different than
- 44:49Speaker 2: other sports that, you know you just can't have one
- 44:53Speaker 2: guy dominate. And win you need multiple guys to try
- 44:56Speaker 2: to win, a game and, you know one superstars not
- 45:00Speaker 2: going to. Do It In, new york, you Know mister
- 45:02Speaker 2: starman are always tried to do the best to make,
- 45:05Speaker 2: you know whoever, it was to try to get his
- 45:09Speaker 2: team to win for. THE city i guess you. REALLY
- 45:11Speaker 2: don't i really, didn't know like our first we had
- 45:14Speaker 2: the twenty year reunion of the ninety, six team and
- 45:18Speaker 2: we all went out to our positions and we knew
- 45:20Speaker 2: we had superstars and We had hall of famers over,
- 45:23Speaker 2: the years, you know Getting the Hall. Of fame but
- 45:25Speaker 2: until you stand on the mountain all of, a sudden
- 45:26Speaker 2: you look around that infield and you're looking Into the,
- 45:29Speaker 2: yankee dugout The, present yankees and then the team that's
- 45:32Speaker 2: Into visiting dugout and hopefully, they realize like hopefully they
- 45:37Speaker 2: see these guys that are standing out on this in
- 45:39Speaker 2: this field, and, like wow that is an. Incredible TEAM
- 45:42Speaker 2: because i, SAID that, I mean i'm sitting there. Looking around,
- 45:44Speaker 2: I'M like i didn't realize we were. That good and
- 45:46Speaker 2: look at all these PLAYERS that i. PLAYED with, I
- 45:48Speaker 2: mean i'm Playing with hall of famers that, you know
- 45:51Speaker 2: you don't realize it until you're, done playing until you
- 45:53Speaker 2: go back twenty years after.
- 45:55Speaker 3: You, Retire gee michael did a good job putting, teams
- 45:58Speaker 3: Together and, CASSY saying i mean he did a. Great
- 46:01Speaker 3: job here's a question From. From ben, he said in,
- 46:04Speaker 3: your opinion Do The brewer scouts do better than others
- 46:08Speaker 3: to consistently find top. Pitching talent what what is the
- 46:12Speaker 3: Miss Uh? Mizerowski jacob what does he do best to stay?
- 46:16Speaker 2: Well dominant, MY goodness i guess when they.
- 46:21Speaker 1: DON'T change a, good answer, Don't, change yeah.
- 46:23Speaker 2: Don't change but when he went when he had five
- 46:25Speaker 2: starts and Maybe The all, STAR team i guess That's
- 46:27Speaker 2: uh and, he's, saying well this is why because he's
- 46:31Speaker 2: such a. Dominant guy it it means that you know
- 46:34Speaker 2: what amazes me with teams like you take the race
- 46:36Speaker 2: because every single year they move a player or a
- 46:41Speaker 2: few and, you're, like okay they're last. Place team there's
- 46:43Speaker 2: no way they're going to be able. To compete how
- 46:45Speaker 2: in the heck do they? Do it, YOU know i
- 46:47Speaker 2: got to Talk To kevin cash one TIME and i was.
- 46:50Speaker 2: Asking him, he said you, know what they go through
- 46:52Speaker 2: the year and they weed out some of the guys
- 46:54Speaker 2: that they, think that, you know probably it's not going
- 46:57Speaker 2: to help, us win or we want a. Different philosophy
- 47:00Speaker 2: and we got to like a swing. A myths, you
- 47:02Speaker 2: know they were a team that really doesn't strike out a. Whole,
- 47:04Speaker 2: lot well they got to got rid of like three
- 47:06Speaker 2: guys that had what one hundred and fifty almost two
- 47:09Speaker 2: hundred strikeouts and, they, say okay we need more on,
- 47:11Speaker 2: base guys and we need. More Contact the brewers the,
- 47:14Speaker 2: same way, you know they trade away, A, damis okay
- 47:17Speaker 2: well are they going? To not are they going to be?
- 47:19Speaker 2: That good and all of a sudden they come, out with,
- 47:21Speaker 2: You know peralto they trade a? Peralta, away okay how
- 47:24Speaker 2: are in the heck are they going to? Do this
- 47:26Speaker 2: and here. They are, you know it's teams like that
- 47:28Speaker 2: that you sit there and scratch their head and you're
- 47:30Speaker 2: like their minor league system and their scouting team has
- 47:33Speaker 2: to be unreal to be able to keep continuing to
- 47:36Speaker 2: compete and when nobody really gives them. A chance, I
- 47:40Speaker 2: mean i didn't think that these guys and what they're
- 47:41Speaker 2: rais And the brewers are going to do what. They're
- 47:43Speaker 2: doing even look At. The cardinals look What the cardinals
- 47:45Speaker 2: are doing for, another purpose.
- 47:46Speaker 1: They had a few.
- 47:46Speaker 3: DOWN years, i Mean the guardians are another example. Of
- 47:49Speaker 3: That the guardians are always they're always. Really good but
- 47:51Speaker 3: just justin Knows the brewers as well, as anybody why
- 47:54Speaker 3: do they keep?
- 47:54Speaker 1: Having? Success?
- 47:55Speaker 4: MISS yeah I mean i think in my experience in,
- 47:58Speaker 4: THE organization i think you talk about systems and you
- 48:01Speaker 4: talk about people in relying on the people and, the
- 48:04Speaker 4: systems and the word that always comes to mind for
- 48:08Speaker 4: me is they have such a strong identity in what,
- 48:12Speaker 4: they're doing and so they're so confident in what they're
- 48:16Speaker 4: doing that there's no waffling around with what's important to
- 48:21Speaker 4: them and. What's not they know exactly what they're trying,
- 48:24Speaker 4: to do and it is across. The organization you could
- 48:27Speaker 4: talk to someone in, player development you can talk to someone.
- 48:30Speaker 4: In scouting it. Doesn't matter it's going to be the
- 48:32Speaker 4: same sort, of talk. Same conversation it's going to be, around.
- 48:35Speaker 4: Culture identity they know exactly what they want, to do
- 48:39Speaker 4: and they place an emphsis on. Different things they're for
- 48:41Speaker 4: one thing and scouting as. An example not to get
- 48:44Speaker 4: into it, too much but one of the things is
- 48:47Speaker 4: is you know, the, Model right they have a model
- 48:49Speaker 4: that they work, off of and on base percentage is
- 48:51Speaker 4: really critical. For them so a player in college that has,
- 48:55Speaker 4: a great, you, know year that also has a skyrocketed
- 48:59Speaker 4: on base percentage because they get good at bats and
- 49:01Speaker 4: they walk a lot and they're on base a lot
- 49:03Speaker 4: and they score a lot. Of runs that's intriguing to
- 49:06Speaker 4: them and the organization as a, whole though top, to
- 49:09Speaker 4: bottom it is. A culture they have a culture. Of
- 49:12Speaker 4: winning now they know what they're trying. To do they
- 49:14Speaker 4: do feel like. It's replaceable they feel like they can
- 49:17Speaker 4: lose someone here and there and bring. Somebody in but
- 49:20Speaker 4: it's it's. The people it's a phenomenal organization top. To
- 49:24Speaker 4: bottom they're, great HUMANS but, i mean what they're doing.
- 49:27Speaker 4: IS phenomenal I don't i don't think they get enough
- 49:29Speaker 4: credits honestly nationally for what. They do year and you're
- 49:34Speaker 4: out and keep losing guys and keep replacing them like they.
- 49:37Speaker 7: Have been it's just been a. Remarkable.
- 49:39Speaker 3: Run yeah and the way they get the way they
- 49:41Speaker 3: will get that credit is winning a, world series which
- 49:44Speaker 3: has not happen.
- 49:45Speaker 2: To.
- 49:45Speaker 1: That, yeah YEAH.
- 49:46Speaker 3: No A so i got to go back to it
- 49:48Speaker 3: here because we got just a couple of. Minutes left
- 49:50Speaker 3: you mentioned, you know in, your world if something, isn't working,
- 49:54Speaker 3: you know you try to. Change IT and i know there,
- 49:56Speaker 3: are tinkerers. You Know tiger woods is maybe the greatest
- 49:59Speaker 3: example of a due that was winning everything by twelve
- 50:01Speaker 3: shots and decided to continue to try to. Change things
- 50:05Speaker 3: you threw in, a sense, two pitches but one that,
- 50:07Speaker 3: everybody Knows and rivera threw. One pitch And when Buck
- 50:11Speaker 3: show walter comes on dirt from, the dugout he will
- 50:14Speaker 3: explain that, that pitch, the cutter was found by mistake
- 50:18Speaker 3: in the dug in a bullpen, one day literally. By
- 50:21Speaker 3: mistake so what happens when you do have something that
- 50:23Speaker 3: no one seems to be able?
- 50:25Speaker 1: To hit do you just stick?
- 50:27Speaker 3: With it are you sitting on the, mound wondering when
- 50:29Speaker 3: the heck is somebody going to figure? This out or
- 50:32Speaker 3: do you just lean? Into it And obviously mariotto and
- 50:35Speaker 3: you seem to lean. Into it how difficult?
- 50:37Speaker 2: Is, that well it's a lot easier, For mo, i'm
- 50:40Speaker 2: thinking because you know he threw, a cutter and from
- 50:44Speaker 2: his relief the way he released. THE ball, i mean
- 50:46Speaker 2: it's funny because you can sit there and tell and
- 50:48Speaker 2: try to, teach pitchers and bowl will try to teach
- 50:52Speaker 2: pitchers and, show, them hey this IS how i threw,
- 50:53Speaker 2: my cutter and you can do the. Same mechanics but
- 50:56Speaker 2: everybody has a different release point and it's not going
- 50:58Speaker 2: to come out of your hand. The SAME and i
- 51:01Speaker 2: would sit There and, it's like how in the heck
- 51:02Speaker 2: does he get away with just one pitch and he's
- 51:04Speaker 2: so good, at it and you would watch managers pinch
- 51:07Speaker 2: hit lefties. Against him, i'm, like well this. Is firewood
- 51:10Speaker 2: he's breaking this guy's back every, single, time right, you
- 51:13Speaker 2: know you know, WITH me I guess i had a
- 51:15Speaker 2: really big slider and that Was my that was my go.
- 51:18Speaker 2: To PITCH but i also had to throw my fastball,
- 51:21Speaker 2: a lot and we had to throw. ESPECIALLY writings i
- 51:23Speaker 2: had to throw in to get them off my slider
- 51:25Speaker 2: because it was. So big so it was a little,
- 51:27Speaker 2: bit DIFFERENT and i always had to, make sure, YOU
- 51:30Speaker 2: know i. Was mechanically moe was. So smooth he's talk
- 51:33Speaker 2: about hardly any flalls in. HIS motion, i mean he
- 51:36Speaker 2: had such great mechanics and was such, a great, great fielder.
- 51:40Speaker 2: Great athlete he was probably, you know we would shag.
- 51:44Speaker 2: Fly balls HIM and i were power shag during. Batting
- 51:46Speaker 2: practice he was better. THAN careful i know he got
- 51:51Speaker 2: hurt at, one time, you know. He would he was
- 51:54Speaker 2: probably one Of the he was probably our best outfielder,
- 51:56Speaker 2: as well but it was it's he marbles anyone and
- 52:00Speaker 2: then you just watch him how he, carries himself AND
- 52:03Speaker 2: like i, mentioned earlier, you know nothing ever seemed to.
- 52:05Speaker 2: Bother him you didn't know if he saved. THE game
- 52:08Speaker 2: i mean when, you lose when you your first year
- 52:11Speaker 2: is a closer, ninety seven and all of a sudden
- 52:13Speaker 2: you lose against the, you know give up a home
- 52:15Speaker 2: Run To sandy alomar in, the playoffs and that doesn't.
- 52:19Speaker 2: Bother you and even after two thousand, and one when
- 52:21Speaker 2: he gives up the Hit To, luis gonzales and that
- 52:24Speaker 2: still doesn't. Bother you and he comes back and continues to.
- 52:26Speaker 2: Do it you know that NOBODY else i don't think
- 52:29Speaker 2: can ever.
- 52:29Speaker 3: Do, That, Yeah royalty, All, right jeff we we do
- 52:32Speaker 3: the thing called the. Kitchen sink this is sort of.
- 52:34Speaker 3: Rapid fire four questions that may or may not have
- 52:37Speaker 3: really anything to do. With baseball i'll ask the, first
- 52:39Speaker 3: one Then justin wi last the, next one favorite food
- 52:41Speaker 3: City between Seattle And. New york, and why.
- 52:45Speaker 2: Oh that's Tough because i'm a big seafood guy and a.
- 52:49Speaker 2: SALMON guy i, love salmon and.
- 52:51Speaker 1: There's Nohing Like west.
- 52:52Speaker 2: Coast.
- 52:52Speaker 1: Salmon seattle you win, that one, all right? Go ahead.
- 52:56Speaker 4: Simple one most famous non baseball celebrity in one of.
- 52:59Speaker 7: Your club now you got a chance. To meet.
- 53:03Speaker 2: There was a lot of them Being In. NEW york
- 53:05Speaker 2: i mean they came through all. The time But We
- 53:07Speaker 2: richard dreyfust. Came in it was Funny Because richard dreyfuss
- 53:10Speaker 2: came into our locker room and somebody. Went back then
- 53:12Speaker 2: when we had, cassette tapes somebody went back and got
- 53:15Speaker 2: jawls and put it by. The door and then Then So,
- 53:19Speaker 2: new york we had tons. Of them so we got
- 53:21Speaker 2: We Got. Lucky dryfu this is a. Great one that's a.
- 53:23Speaker 3: Good one, all right here's the next one for YOU
- 53:25Speaker 3: in la if not baseball for, a career what do
- 53:28Speaker 3: you think you would? Have done and not broadcasting because
- 53:30Speaker 3: you did, That after but if we were going to,
- 53:32Speaker 3: play baseball what were you going?
- 53:33Speaker 2: To, do well my dad was a COP and i
- 53:35Speaker 2: wanted to BE.

- 53:39Speaker 2: enforcement okay, good.
- 53:41Speaker 1: Answer, INTIMIDATED yeah i.
- 53:45Speaker 7: Was ready so what was your motivation behind getting? Into
- 53:48Speaker 7: broadcasting you.
- 53:50Speaker 2: Know WHEN i'm i had a radio Show in SEATTLE
- 53:53Speaker 2: when i played For the mariners from one TO when
- 53:55Speaker 2: i came BACK and i had my own show For
- 53:58Speaker 2: every Tuesday was tuesdays but NOW and i would watch
- 54:01Speaker 2: Guys Like carl RAVITCH and i would sit there in
- 54:03Speaker 2: the clubhouse for the first INNING and i would listen
- 54:06Speaker 2: to listen to the broadcasters and a lot, of them
- 54:09Speaker 2: a lot, of them, you know sometimes they, would bother,
- 54:11Speaker 2: you know they would bug you because they never played.
- 54:13Speaker 2: The Game, NOT carl, I mean rabbi is a, great
- 54:15Speaker 2: ONE but i, you know they would they they didn't
- 54:19Speaker 2: teach the, game WELL and i wanted to always teach.
- 54:21Speaker 2: The game one of my two of my favorite ones
- 54:23Speaker 2: Were The, White Sox tom Patorik. AND harrelson i love
- 54:30Speaker 2: listening to. Those guys, you know they, were homers but
- 54:32Speaker 2: they were exciting and they loved the. OTHER team i
- 54:36Speaker 2: will to get, into, it yes, YOU know i JUST
- 54:40Speaker 2: loved i, WAS like i want to be able to teach.
- 54:42Speaker 2: The game i'd, like Analytics but i'd rather explain what's
- 54:46Speaker 2: going to happen and what, could happen why this guy
- 54:49Speaker 2: did a great job or not a. Great job, YOU
- 54:51Speaker 2: know i just want to, YOU know i want to
- 54:53Speaker 2: be a teacher in the booth instead of a fifty
- 54:56Speaker 2: percent of the time this guy goes and blows his
- 54:58Speaker 2: nose in between the second and You know i'd rather not. Do.
- 55:01Speaker 1: That, right well you've, done, it really you've done it
- 55:04Speaker 1: really well on.
- 55:04Speaker 3: This show just one quick bonus question because we don't
- 55:07Speaker 3: get a guy that's Won For world. Series rings how
- 55:10Speaker 3: important in your life Were The world? Series rings, you
- 55:14Speaker 3: know how do those change?
- 55:15Speaker 2: Your, life well it changes as far as Going Around.
- 55:19Speaker 2: NEW york, i mean you know nowadays at sixty six
- 55:23Speaker 2: is hard to. Hide anyway but when you win, TWO
- 55:27Speaker 2: thousand i think. We won i've been to five, of
- 55:30Speaker 2: them and the one you remember the most is ONE
- 55:32Speaker 2: and o three when we Lost. To MARLINS but i
- 55:34Speaker 2: mean we Beat the mets in, two thousands so that's
- 55:36Speaker 2: probably my my. Favorite one but just winning and Winning
- 55:39Speaker 2: The world series and Being, a yankee you never, got
- 55:42Speaker 2: tired and you again ever. Got complacent you had an
- 55:44Speaker 2: owner that wouldn't. Let you but, THE excitement, i mean
- 55:48Speaker 2: look At. The knicks, YOU know i was sitting THERE
- 55:49Speaker 2: and i was glued TO. The tv i'm not A big,
- 55:51Speaker 2: nba FAN but i was glued TO the tv With,
- 55:54Speaker 2: the knicks and just, you know when, THEY won i,
- 55:57Speaker 2: was like you, Know what i've been there for different
- 56:00Speaker 2: times and the city's just electric and these guys are
