- 0:07Speaker 3: Rogan podcast, by Night, All Day.
- 0:12Speaker 4: What's happening Man, Good to see you to the microphone, sir.
- 0:17Speaker 4: All right, you were fucking great at that McConaughey thing
- 0:22Speaker 4: last year. I really enjoyed that. That was my first
- 0:24Speaker 4: time seeing you perform live. It was really cool. It
- 0:27Speaker 4: was very cool. You're so relaxed up there, man, So
- 0:30Speaker 4: it was like you brought everybody into a nice, like
- 0:33Speaker 4: comfortable chill vibe. It was cool.
- 0:36Speaker 1: I'm glad you guys felt felt that way. Sometimes it's
- 0:39Speaker 1: it takes me a minute to get into the groove,
- 0:41Speaker 1: you know.
- 0:42Speaker 4: Yeah, but it felt like that, you know, it felt
- 0:44Speaker 4: like you were in it, like it brought us, brought
- 0:46Speaker 4: the whole crowd into it too. That that event that
- 0:48Speaker 4: he does, the two events, the one the singer songwriter
- 0:51Speaker 4: one and then the other one with the auction and everything.
- 0:54Speaker 4: They're so cool, such good events.
- 0:56Speaker 1: Yeah, they're good people too. You know. It's really grown
- 1:00Speaker 1: to just appreciate the community around here in Austin and
- 1:03Speaker 1: the Hill Country area and all of that stuff. I
- 1:05Speaker 1: definitely wouldn't have the career. I don't think if it
- 1:09Speaker 1: wouldn't have been for the community around here that is
- 1:11Speaker 1: supporting songwriters and music and the way that they do.
- 1:14Speaker 1: It's pretty incredible, you know, when they get behind anything.
- 1:17Speaker 1: It's just like it just feels so good to see
- 1:19Speaker 1: that many people come together and it's you know, have
- 1:22Speaker 1: that support.
- 1:23Speaker 4: It's a really good place, man. Austin is a really
- 1:25Speaker 4: good community. It really is a very positive place in
- 1:28Speaker 4: a lot of ways. Yeah, I mean, nothing's perfect. There's
- 1:31Speaker 4: no perfect places, but it's really good. I like it
- 1:35Speaker 4: so much better than when I was living in California.
- 1:37Speaker 4: It feels like real people.
- 1:40Speaker 1: Just I miss it, man. I mean I'm in the
- 1:42Speaker 1: process and moving back to Texas as well. Where you're
- 1:45Speaker 1: at right now outside of Dallas, Texas out by Tyler,
- 1:49Speaker 1: I've been in a Topanga canyon in La Oh Jesus,
- 1:52Speaker 1: you know. So I've been in the middle of.
- 1:54Speaker 4: It and doing that Hollywood thing.
- 1:57Speaker 1: Every time I get across the state line, it's just
- 1:59Speaker 1: like that way comes off and you're like, man, I'm home,
- 2:02Speaker 1: you know.
- 2:03Speaker 4: So, yeah, did you have the coolest fucking character on Yellowstone?
- 2:08Speaker 4: It was such it must be so fun to play.
- 2:10Speaker 1: It was so much fun, man, I had to, I laughed.
- 2:13Speaker 1: I always talking about it. I felt like I had
- 2:15Speaker 1: like one of the easiest jobs there. You know, it's
- 2:17Speaker 1: because my the character was kind of a smaller role,
- 2:20Speaker 1: and you know, most of the time I'd work like
- 2:22Speaker 1: one or two days a week, and then the rest
- 2:24Speaker 1: of the time I'll just be like fly fishing and
- 2:26Speaker 1: get really mountains and just disappear out there.
- 2:28Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 2:29Speaker 1: It was awesome.
- 2:30Speaker 4: God, Montana is awesome. That show made so many people
- 2:32Speaker 4: move out there. Though.
- 2:34Speaker 1: I know you're going to take your license plate off
- 2:36Speaker 1: your car before you go.
- 2:38Speaker 4: Right, you better not have a California play. They will
- 2:41Speaker 4: write things on your.
- 2:42Speaker 1: Hood, run you off the road.
- 2:44Speaker 4: Yeah, they get upset. It's very interesting, very proud to
- 2:47Speaker 4: be from Montana, and you want to keep it to themselves, like,
- 2:50Speaker 4: let it go, motherfucker. We're all Americans, right, if you
- 2:53Speaker 4: got a good spot, you should be happy that people
- 2:55Speaker 4: from California figure it out. Yeah, don't be a dick
- 2:58Speaker 4: like you're American. You're not. It's not the United States
- 3:02Speaker 4: of Montana. Shut the fuck up.
- 3:04Speaker 1: I guess it's kind of anywhere, right, you know, not
- 3:06Speaker 1: that much here.
- 3:07Speaker 4: Yeah, here's pretty inviting. I've never had that experience here
- 3:12Speaker 4: not really.
- 3:13Speaker 1: Texas a pretty friendly place, yeah, and there's so many
- 3:16Speaker 1: different walks of life that have been here for so long,
- 3:19Speaker 1: you know, I think yeah, and Montana and stuff. Man,
- 3:22Speaker 1: if you were tough enough to survive those winners and
- 3:25Speaker 1: stake a claim up there back in the day, you
- 3:26Speaker 1: had to fight for it, and they're still fighting for
- 3:28Speaker 1: it now. You know.
- 3:29Speaker 4: That does make sense, I mean, and that's also one
- 3:31Speaker 4: of the things that's highlighted by the whole series, all
- 3:34Speaker 4: the different Yellstone series, the older ones with Harrison Ford,
- 3:37Speaker 4: and you know, they really do explain in a lot.
- 3:41Speaker 4: I mean, it's kind of a cool chunk of history
- 3:44Speaker 4: to see like how this all got started, how the
- 3:47Speaker 4: kind of people that had to survive out there when
- 3:50Speaker 4: you know, all yead is a fireplace. Yeah, that's it.
- 3:53Speaker 4: You got a fireplace.
- 3:54Speaker 1: You still love all those mountain end stories, you know,
- 3:57Speaker 1: Jim Bridger and all yeah.
- 3:58Speaker 4: Stuff.
- 3:58Speaker 1: It's just like, man, and there is something you get
- 4:01Speaker 1: up there in those mountains that get into you get
- 4:03Speaker 1: to mountains get into your bones, it gets into your blood,
- 4:06Speaker 1: and it's a it's a different thing and it's a
- 4:09Speaker 1: spiritual place it is, and.
- 4:11Speaker 4: It's also it's like the most potent art. It's it's
- 4:16Speaker 4: nature's art, and you don't think of it as art,
- 4:20Speaker 4: but got it. It's so beautiful. It's like stunt. Like
- 4:23Speaker 4: sometimes when you're up there, you just have to stop
- 4:25Speaker 4: and look, like, God, this is gorgeous.
- 4:28Speaker 1: And it's overwhelming.
- 4:30Speaker 4: It gives you a feeling. There's like it's almost like
- 4:33Speaker 4: a drug that hits you because of the beauty of
- 4:36Speaker 4: it all. Like you take it in with the blue
- 4:38Speaker 4: sky and you see the clouds in the mountain and
- 4:40Speaker 4: maybe there's a lake below you in the canyon. You're like, God,
- 4:43Speaker 4: this is gorgeous. It's like your you feel it in
- 4:46Speaker 4: your your DNA. Man, it's like your your body knows
- 4:51Speaker 4: like this is a fertile, beautiful place that's filled with
- 4:54Speaker 4: life and this should excite you. So all your natural
- 4:58Speaker 4: human reward instincts they're all like, this is the place
- 5:01Speaker 4: I should be. Yeah, Like look at the sky, look
- 5:04Speaker 4: at the lake, look at the mountains. This is fertile,
- 5:07Speaker 4: this is like life giving. Yeah.
- 5:09Speaker 1: Yeah. Several years ago I went to a guide school
- 5:13Speaker 1: up there, like a hunt and guy M and H.
- 5:17Speaker 1: It was a whole pack squad. Part of it, I
- 5:19Speaker 1: grew up cowboy and ranching, but I've never really been
- 5:21Speaker 1: up there in those mountains like that, and I'm my
- 5:24Speaker 1: dad would always fantasized about that. We'd talk, you know,
- 5:26Speaker 1: one day we're going to go on like a pack
- 5:27Speaker 1: trip up in Montana, and you know, we'd watch all
- 5:30Speaker 1: those movies like Lonesome Dove and all of that stuff.
- 5:32Speaker 1: So it was always just kind of a day dream.
- 5:34Speaker 1: And years ago, I was just kind of overwhelmed with
- 5:38Speaker 1: music stuff and all that. Didn't know what I was
- 5:40Speaker 1: going to do, and I ended up I just wanted
- 5:42Speaker 1: to go up there for a trip, you know, maybe
- 5:43Speaker 1: go on a pack trip. And I started looking up
- 5:46Speaker 1: places and I found this place called Royal Time Outfitters
- 5:50Speaker 1: and they're like, yeah, you know, we come up you
- 5:52Speaker 1: can take take you on a pack trip. But we
- 5:54Speaker 1: also have like this six week school, you know that
- 5:57Speaker 1: you can train to be a guide that's all mule
- 6:01Speaker 1: pack and all kinds of stuff, you know, And so
- 6:03Speaker 1: I was like, man, I'm gonna sign up for that,
- 6:04Speaker 1: you know, and it was life changing. There was only
- 6:07Speaker 1: six of us in the class, and you know, spent
- 6:10Speaker 1: weeks back in the back country pack of mules and
- 6:12Speaker 1: horses and oh wow, what we just tie a rope
- 6:16Speaker 1: between two trees with a tart for sleeping at night,
- 6:18Speaker 1: and always post up a couple of guys to watch
- 6:20Speaker 1: over the horses at night. And I remember one morning
- 6:23Speaker 1: I woke up and it was in June, you know,
- 6:25Speaker 1: but we're way back in there, and I woke up
- 6:28Speaker 1: and the snow was coming down, and I just kind
- 6:30Speaker 1: of raised my head up and I was looking out
- 6:32Speaker 1: at the horses and the snow was just falling down
- 6:34Speaker 1: in their backs. And there was that moment and me,
- 6:37Speaker 1: I was like, I don't know if I'm ever going back,
- 6:40Speaker 1: you know. I was like, this is right where, this
- 6:43Speaker 1: is where where I need to.
- 6:45Speaker 4: Be, right.
- 6:46Speaker 1: It was tough to come back to a civilization after that.
- 6:50Speaker 4: I think we're doing something with ourselves, to ourselves with
- 6:54Speaker 4: civilization that we can't really fully appreciate because we're wrapped
- 6:59Speaker 4: in it. And it's it's not until you get to
- 7:01Speaker 4: nature where all that weight just gets lifted off of
- 7:03Speaker 4: you and you feel more normal and you're like, oh,
- 7:07Speaker 4: this is where people are supposed to be.
- 7:09Speaker 1: Yeah, you know, no phones, there's no nothing, no distractions,
- 7:12Speaker 1: and it's just like you all your senses, heighten your eyesight,
- 7:16Speaker 1: you're hearing your sense, smell like all of that stuff.
- 7:20Speaker 1: And you know, I remember going into it, you know,
- 7:22Speaker 1: I didn't know what to expect.
- 7:24Speaker 4: Really.
- 7:24Speaker 1: I've done some camping and things like that and grew
- 7:26Speaker 1: up ranting and all that. This was a way different deal.
- 7:29Speaker 1: And I remember I just had this like backpack full
- 7:32Speaker 1: of gear. You know, by the time I got out
- 7:35Speaker 1: of there, like I just felt like all I needed
- 7:37Speaker 1: was a par of scissors and some way to start
- 7:40Speaker 1: some fire.
- 7:40Speaker 4: You out, was about it. Yeah, I followed this one dude. God,
- 7:47Speaker 4: I'm trying to remember his name, Clay let me let
- 7:51Speaker 4: me pull it up because I really enjoy his videos.
- 7:55Speaker 4: But this dude, he lives I believe he lives in Alaska,
- 7:59Speaker 4: but he does a lot of trips in America, like
- 8:02Speaker 4: all over America in the lower forty eight, and he
- 8:05Speaker 4: goes and lives by himself in some kind of harsh environment,
- 8:11Speaker 4: Like he's done it in the swamps. Clay, A's that's it.
- 8:16Speaker 1: Does he like take his kid out there? He kids
- 8:19Speaker 1: believe he.
- 8:19Speaker 4: Has he's taking his dog, But a lot of times
- 8:22Speaker 4: he just goes entirely by himself and they're very very interesting.
- 8:28Speaker 4: Like he starts his own fire, He'll figure out how
- 8:31Speaker 4: to get food, he figures out how to purify water.
- 8:34Speaker 4: He's taking salt water and made his own thing that
- 8:37Speaker 4: kind of distills it into fresh water and removes the salt,
- 8:41Speaker 4: like very slowly by using a piece of bamboo and
- 8:45Speaker 4: fire and boiling the water in the bamboo so that
- 8:48Speaker 4: like the water evaporates and then drips down and it
- 8:51Speaker 4: doesn't have salt in it. Apparently.
- 8:53Speaker 1: I love that stuff. I love it just to have
- 8:55Speaker 1: those skills, just to know how to do it, like
- 8:57Speaker 1: whether you'll ever need it or not, just to know
- 8:59Speaker 1: how to do that. It's just so cool.
- 9:01Speaker 4: I remember.
- 9:03Speaker 1: And that that guys, because there's a lot of different
- 9:05Speaker 1: parts to which was so cool. It's like we did
- 9:07Speaker 1: a whole week of like backcountry like wilding his first aid,
- 9:12Speaker 1: you know, he had guy had a paramedic come in
- 9:14Speaker 1: and teach us all this stuff. And then it was
- 9:16Speaker 1: a whole week of just like leather work. There's a
- 9:18Speaker 1: whole week of shoeing horses. There was a fly fishing
- 9:21Speaker 1: and entomology and all these this kind of little skills.
- 9:24Speaker 1: But one thing that really stuck with me was a
- 9:28Speaker 1: fire building, uh kind of drill when we started when
- 9:31Speaker 1: it was kind of right when we first got there,
- 9:32Speaker 1: and it was pretty wet and it had been snowing,
- 9:34Speaker 1: and there's only six of us, you know, and we're
- 9:36Speaker 1: guys from kind of all over the country. And I
- 9:39Speaker 1: grew up in New Mexico and West Texas where it's
- 9:41Speaker 1: pretty dry, you know, and you kind of build a fire.
- 9:44Speaker 1: You can kind of just take some little small twigs
- 9:46Speaker 1: and get a little fire going, you know. And so
- 9:48Speaker 1: because all right, you got two minutes to build a fire,
- 9:51Speaker 1: and you need to have you know, like a flame
- 9:52Speaker 1: to be three or four feet high. And man, I'm
- 9:55Speaker 1: running around grabbing like little sticks and twigs, and I'm
- 9:58Speaker 1: just we have a light or too, you know. I'm
- 9:59Speaker 1: just struggling. It's just smoking and they can't get it
- 10:02Speaker 1: going out. I look over and there's a kid from
- 10:04Speaker 1: Alaska in the class, and he just runs over to
- 10:07Speaker 1: this big dead pine tree and just breaks off the
- 10:11Speaker 1: biggest branch of dead you know, pine needles and takes
- 10:14Speaker 1: his lighter and just.
- 10:17Speaker 2: Within like five seconds has this massive fire going. I
- 10:20Speaker 2: was like, Okay, that's how you do that, you know.
- 10:23Speaker 1: And it was so just the littlest things, you know,
- 10:25Speaker 1: to have that knowledge, you know, And part of it was,
- 10:28Speaker 1: you know, he was explaining to the instructure. He's like, yeah,
- 10:30Speaker 1: you know, if you're out here with your guiding somebody
- 10:33Speaker 1: that's hunting, maybe he's an elderly guy, or somebody gets
- 10:35Speaker 1: hurt and you get caught back in the mountains and
- 10:37Speaker 1: it's snowing, it's like you better get a fire going
- 10:39Speaker 1: and keep them warm real quick, you know. So there
- 10:42Speaker 1: was always a you know, a reason and a purpose
- 10:44Speaker 1: behind it, which was really cool and I'll never those
- 10:47Speaker 1: are some of the things I'll never forget.
- 10:49Speaker 4: Did they teach you how to start fires with like
- 10:52Speaker 4: a piece of metal and like a flint, like you
- 10:54Speaker 4: know what is a striking rod?
- 10:56Speaker 1: Yeah, we did some flint stuff and with like the
- 10:59Speaker 1: pitch wood and some old pine trees. You know, you
- 11:01Speaker 1: can find that pitch wood. And we did some bow
- 11:05Speaker 1: and wood drill stuff.
- 11:06Speaker 4: Not a whole lot hard, it was. That's hard I
- 11:10Speaker 4: did in the boy Scouts and it took like hours
- 11:14Speaker 4: to start a fire. Yeah, you have to keep song
- 11:18Speaker 4: and if you're doing it with your hand, you're gonna
- 11:19Speaker 4: blow your hands up.
- 11:20Speaker 1: Yeah, you better get your technique down.
- 11:23Speaker 4: Yeah, you have the stick on the top and the
- 11:26Speaker 4: stick that goes all the way to the base thing,
- 11:28Speaker 4: and you cut a little hole in the base thing
- 11:31Speaker 4: so that like all the little embers can fall into
- 11:33Speaker 4: your kindling.
- 11:34Speaker 2: And you gotta saw the ship out of the imagine
- 11:37Speaker 2: trying to do that.
- 11:38Speaker 1: You know, in the snow, it's wet, right, It's like, man,
- 11:41Speaker 1: it's it's just very very unlikely.
- 11:44Speaker 4: You know, it's really good for kindling. Free does really Yeah, Yeah,
- 11:51Speaker 4: it's kind of shocking. Yeah. We were in Alaska and
- 11:53Speaker 4: it was raining all the time and there was one
- 11:55Speaker 4: day where it stopped. I was with my friend Steve
- 11:57Speaker 4: Vernello took me up there with my friend Brian and
- 12:01Speaker 4: Ryan Callahan, all these guys. So we went up there
- 12:04Speaker 4: and when we got one day, like a ten hour
- 12:07Speaker 4: stretch where it was not rain, and we're like, we
- 12:10Speaker 4: gotta start a fucking fire because it was it was
- 12:12Speaker 4: raining every day for like five days in a row,
- 12:15Speaker 4: and we couldn't find any deer. It was a nightmare.
- 12:18Speaker 4: It was tough hunting. Yeah, So this one day and
- 12:21Speaker 4: we were trying to figure out things to light on
- 12:23Speaker 4: fire because everything's soak and wet, and so we got
- 12:26Speaker 4: some pieces of wood from like underneath the bottom of
- 12:29Speaker 4: trees and shit and dead trees that were covered by
- 12:33Speaker 4: other things were kind of sort of a little bit dry,
- 12:36Speaker 4: and we used free dos and free dos when you
- 12:39Speaker 4: light them, man, it's crazy how much oil is in
- 12:42Speaker 4: those things. Yeah, they just and they stay lit for
- 12:45Speaker 4: a long time, like a candle. Yeah. And so we
- 12:47Speaker 4: started like piling little things and we got that fire.
- 12:50Speaker 4: I was like, the happiest I've ever been in my life.
- 12:52Speaker 4: I soak it away.
- 12:54Speaker 1: I just cannot get Once you get that kind of
- 12:56Speaker 1: cold too, it's just like there's almost.
- 12:58Speaker 4: You know, cold, that bad cold. Wise, it was like
- 13:02Speaker 4: in the fifties or sixties. Yeah, it was just the wetness.
- 13:05Speaker 4: The wetness was impossible to get away from. I thought,
- 13:08Speaker 4: once you get into your tent, you'd be dry, you
- 13:11Speaker 4: get in your sleeping bag, you'd be dry. But I
- 13:13Speaker 4: had to take a piss in the middle of the night,
- 13:14Speaker 4: and I had to turn on my head lamp in
- 13:15Speaker 4: the tent, and when I did, it was all just missed. Yeah,
- 13:19Speaker 4: everywhere it was moist, and I was like, oh my god,
- 13:22Speaker 4: I'm never going to be dry. I had to just accept,
- 13:25Speaker 4: like there's no drying here.
- 13:26Speaker 1: How long How long were you guys back in there?
- 13:28Speaker 4: About six days? We had we had to leave. We
- 13:31Speaker 4: were supposed to be there for seven, but we had
- 13:32Speaker 4: to leave on the sixth day because the storm was
- 13:34Speaker 4: coming in. I was like, I could get stuck, because
- 13:36Speaker 4: you can get stuck up there. We were on I
- 13:38Speaker 4: guess Prince Edwards, is that what the island is? Yeah,
- 13:42Speaker 4: you get stuck up there. And I was like, I
- 13:44Speaker 4: gotta get back home.
- 13:44Speaker 1: I got a work jet, fly in like on a.
- 13:46Speaker 4: On a puddle jumper, landed in the pond and drink, Yeah, exactly.
- 13:53Speaker 4: And you could drink right out of the pond. Like
- 13:55Speaker 4: the pond was all rain water and there's no it
- 13:57Speaker 4: was too high for beavers, so you didn't have to
- 13:59Speaker 4: worry about ardia or anything in the water. You could
- 14:01Speaker 4: just drink right out of the pond. Like this is crazy.
- 14:03Speaker 1: Yeah, I've never been. I've been to Alaska only like
- 14:07Speaker 1: in the winter on a like skiing thing. But I've
- 14:09Speaker 1: always wanted to go up there to hunt and fish.
- 14:11Speaker 4: And the people are extraordinary. Those are rugged people. Like
- 14:15Speaker 4: when I did a gig with my friend Ari and
- 14:18Speaker 4: Anchorage and one of the things. It was weird because
- 14:21Speaker 4: you get there, it's eleven pm. It's bright out, Like,
- 14:23Speaker 4: this is weird. One of the things that we talked
- 14:25Speaker 4: about after is like those people were fucking cool. Like
- 14:28Speaker 4: there's there's something about living up there, like where you
- 14:32Speaker 4: could die going outside like a good six months out
- 14:35Speaker 4: of the year. His fucking bears everywhere. If you you
- 14:40Speaker 4: look sideways at a moose, it'll stomp you to death
- 14:42Speaker 4: in a fucking Walmart parking lot.
- 14:44Speaker 1: Yeah, like it's whatever.
- 14:47Speaker 4: Shit together. There's bald eagles everywhere. The salmon are as
- 14:52Speaker 4: big as your thigh. I mean, the people there are
- 14:56Speaker 4: they work together. There's like they're very friendly, but they're
- 15:00Speaker 4: very rugged. But they're also like they realize you need
- 15:04Speaker 4: each other, Like there's a sense of like community, Yeah,
- 15:09Speaker 4: you need each other. If your fucking car breaks down
- 15:11Speaker 4: the side of the road, you could die. Like someone's
- 15:13Speaker 4: not gonna let you die. They're gonna pull over. In California,
- 15:16Speaker 4: they're like someone will get them. They just keep driving.
- 15:19Speaker 4: So you just lose this sense of community.
- 15:21Speaker 1: Yeah, you're not calling you you're not. That's that's who
- 15:23Speaker 1: you're calling for help in times and need. Is your
- 15:25Speaker 1: neighbor exactly. Even if like the bridge washes out, It's like,
- 15:29Speaker 1: here comes your neighbor with the backo and a tractor
- 15:31Speaker 1: and do it yourself.
- 15:32Speaker 4: And that makes a cool friendship when your friend helps
- 15:36Speaker 4: you out, or when you help your friend out.
- 15:38Speaker 1: That's what I miss about living in Texas too.
- 15:40Speaker 4: You know.
- 15:40Speaker 1: It's just like some of the small things or whatever.
- 15:44Speaker 1: You like eating up at my place in Tipega. You know,
- 15:47Speaker 1: you want to build some fans.
- 15:48Speaker 4: Or whatever, like I do.
- 15:49Speaker 1: I feel lucky. I've got a couple of really good
- 15:51Speaker 1: friends up there, neighbors that you know, love to come,
- 15:54Speaker 1: you know, work with their hands and or you get
- 15:56Speaker 1: their hands dirty and we'll build stuff. And like, man,
- 15:59Speaker 1: in Texas, you want to, like weld something, you need
- 16:01Speaker 1: something with a tract or some heavy equipment thing. You know,
- 16:04Speaker 1: like you're not getting that done in California. It's gonna
- 16:07Speaker 1: cost you a fortune to you know, get someone with
- 16:10Speaker 1: a skid steer up to your house to help you
- 16:12Speaker 1: move some dirt around, you know. But here in Texas
- 16:14Speaker 1: it's like, oh man, it's called frank down the road.
- 16:20Speaker 4: There's people that have a long tradition of doing stuff.
- 16:23Speaker 4: You know. It's like it's a real place.
- 16:26Speaker 1: I grew up like that too, you know, you know,
- 16:29Speaker 1: people cutting hay and stuff like that, especially when you're young.
- 16:32Speaker 1: Like man, we would go stack hay for everybody around.
- 16:36Speaker 4: You know.
- 16:36Speaker 1: It's like that was the summer job.
- 16:38Speaker 4: You know.
- 16:38Speaker 1: It's like, let's just go.
- 16:40Speaker 4: That makes a strong person. People that throw hay around
- 16:44Speaker 4: those are strong. Mother like that term like farmer strength.
- 16:48Speaker 4: That shit's real.
- 16:49Speaker 1: You better said. I was always a little guy too,
- 16:51Speaker 1: so I had to use and learn how to use
- 16:52Speaker 1: leverage real quick. Roll those bells up on your knee
- 16:55Speaker 1: that hang on. One of the last times I did that,
- 16:57Speaker 1: I remember is uh. I was going to in Stephenville, Texas,
- 17:01Speaker 1: and had a good friend over in Glen Rose and
- 17:03Speaker 1: it was middle of July and and he's an older
- 17:06Speaker 1: man and asked us to come help in stack hay
- 17:08Speaker 1: in his barn. And it was we're stacking in the barn,
- 17:11Speaker 1: you know, so and it's just like you're inside the morny.
- 17:13Speaker 1: It's just hot. It had been one hundred and ten
- 17:15Speaker 1: degrees in there, you know, and we're talking hundreds of
- 17:17Speaker 1: bells of hey, and it was just all we could do.
- 17:19Speaker 1: And of course we're hungover and we're college, we're trying
- 17:23Speaker 1: to we're stacking hay and I was like, I think
- 17:24Speaker 1: I think this is my last hey hauling job right now.
- 17:27Speaker 4: Yeah, those jobs, those are good for letting you know
- 17:30Speaker 4: that this is not the life you want. Yeah, Like,
- 17:32Speaker 4: get a good, rugged, manual labor job. It'll knock some
- 17:35Speaker 4: fucking sense of dude.
- 17:36Speaker 1: That's what I got. The guitar. Man, I'd learned pretty
- 17:38Speaker 1: quick that the guitar felt a lot better in my
- 17:40Speaker 1: hands in that shovel.
- 17:43Speaker 4: Yeah, I know that feeling. I spent one summer doing
- 17:47Speaker 4: insulation in an attic. It was all that fire. I
- 17:51Speaker 4: had it in all my.
- 17:52Speaker 1: Skin because you're sweating your eyes.
- 17:54Speaker 4: Yeah, you're sweating because it's hot in summer, so it's
- 17:57Speaker 4: getting into your pores and you're old. He's itchy. You
- 18:01Speaker 4: feel like it's on you all the time. Also, like
- 18:03Speaker 4: it's got to be terrible to be breeding that shit in.
- 18:06Speaker 1: Oh the worst.
- 18:07Speaker 4: Yeah. And I don't even think we were using equipment.
- 18:10Speaker 4: I don't think we used any safety equipment.
- 18:12Speaker 1: You know, you didn't have a mask on or anything.
- 18:13Speaker 4: I don't believe. So I think we just installed it,
- 18:16Speaker 4: just unrolled that ship and stuffed it into the into
- 18:20Speaker 4: the rafters.
- 18:21Speaker 1: Using paint with lead in it.
- 18:25Speaker 4: And then back then the gasoline had lead too.
- 18:28Speaker 1: So drinking out of the water hose.
- 18:30Speaker 4: Right, Oh yeah, I think it makes a resilient person
- 18:33Speaker 4: to drink out of water hose.
- 18:35Speaker 2: Heck, yeah, you get tough or die.
- 18:38Speaker 4: You get extra minerals from the fucking copper on the faucet. Yeah,
- 18:44Speaker 4: it's uh. Those jobs are really important, like for a
- 18:47Speaker 4: young person to figure out what they don't want to do.
- 18:51Speaker 4: Teaches your work ethic, teaches you like hey, like this
- 18:54Speaker 4: is you can get some satisfaction out of a hard
- 18:57Speaker 4: day's work and a hard week. Like you did it.
- 18:59Speaker 4: You put it in and feel good about yourself. You
- 19:01Speaker 4: know it was difficult to do. But don't keep doing that. Yeah,
- 19:06Speaker 4: figure out a way out of this. Yeah, you got
- 19:09Speaker 4: to understand that. You understand it. You got to feel
- 19:12Speaker 4: for it. You know what hard labor is.
- 19:14Speaker 1: But yeah, don't ruin your life. Yeah, I feel real grateful.
- 19:19Speaker 1: My granddad was always a real hard worker. And even
- 19:22Speaker 1: when I was twelve and thirteen, you know, in the
- 19:24Speaker 1: summers or I spend a lot of time living with him,
- 19:26Speaker 1: and he always had a job lined up for me.
- 19:29Speaker 1: You know, it's like, Hey, you're gonna go over here
- 19:30Speaker 1: and we're gonna mow so and so's long this morning.
- 19:33Speaker 1: We're gonna go over here, We're gonna send you out
- 19:36Speaker 1: to kins and you're gonna build some fence this weekend.
- 19:39Speaker 1: And I always enjoyed.
- 19:40Speaker 4: It, though.
- 19:41Speaker 1: I enjoyed those guys I was around, and you know,
- 19:44Speaker 1: I'd work all day and then we'd sit around and
- 19:47Speaker 1: they'd drink beer in the afternoon and tell me stories
- 19:49Speaker 1: and you know, and even now, like I'm my own place,
- 19:52Speaker 1: you know, it's like I don't want to be building
- 19:54Speaker 1: somebody else's fence, but I'm glad I know how to
- 19:56Speaker 1: build my own or things like that and have those
- 20:00Speaker 1: I still love working around the house and doing little
- 20:02Speaker 1: projects and things like that. I need a lot of
- 20:04Speaker 1: younger guys and kids that sometimes I I guess I
- 20:09Speaker 1: have an expectation that they know how to do that
- 20:12Speaker 1: kind of stuff, you know, right, they want to come
- 20:14Speaker 1: over to the house and help us in projects and stuff,
- 20:17Speaker 1: and I'm like, oh, yeah, cool, we'll just you know,
- 20:19Speaker 1: I already dug those holes and set up a stringline
- 20:22Speaker 1: and we'll set these posts. And they're like okay, and
- 20:24Speaker 1: then after about a half hour, I look over and they're
- 20:27Speaker 1: just kind of looking at the ground.
- 20:30Speaker 2: Like what do we do here? You know, They're like,
- 20:32Speaker 2: I don't have a clue what you want me to do?
- 20:33Speaker 1: You know. It's hilarious, Yeah, hilarious, but uh yeah, it's
- 20:41Speaker 1: it's it's wild. It's changed. Man. Kids ain't out their
- 20:43Speaker 1: mowing lawns no more, that's for sure.
- 20:45Speaker 4: No. Well, there's something about that kind of work, like
- 20:48Speaker 4: putting in fences and all the stuff that you see
- 20:52Speaker 4: the cowboys doing on Yellowstone and then hanging out together afterwards.
- 20:57Speaker 4: That's so like viscerally appealing to people. There's something about
- 21:02Speaker 4: watching that life like it's you would say, it's like
- 21:05Speaker 4: a simple, difficult life. Maybe I don't know what it is,
- 21:09Speaker 4: but whatever it is, it's like it's so appealing, Like
- 21:12Speaker 4: so many people wanted to be cowboys after they watch
- 21:15Speaker 4: your show.
- 21:15Speaker 1: Mm hmmm. I think it's something goes to like you're
- 21:18Speaker 1: talking about that guy living off the land and stuff
- 21:20Speaker 1: like that. It's just, you know, it's something that's been
- 21:24Speaker 1: ingrained in us over thousands of years of survival, and
- 21:28Speaker 1: like we we all have that in us still the
- 21:30Speaker 1: day and we just unfortunately losing touch with it because
- 21:33Speaker 1: we're not doing it as much. And so when you
- 21:35Speaker 1: get the opportunity to even just go play in a
- 21:38Speaker 1: garden or something like that, I think that's it. It's
- 21:40Speaker 1: in us, you know, and it's it wakes up something
- 21:43Speaker 1: within that's just been a little bit dormant for a while,
- 21:46Speaker 1: you know.
- 21:46Speaker 4: And I think you're right, you know, I think that's
- 21:49Speaker 4: exactly what it is. I think it is like it's
- 21:51Speaker 4: in our memory, like the memory of our genes, that
- 21:54Speaker 4: this is like a pleasing life, this is a satisfying life.
- 21:58Speaker 1: It's like that Mama bear energy own kids come. It's
- 22:01Speaker 1: just like I was like, yeah, oh man, you know, yeah, yeah,
- 22:04Speaker 1: it's there. It's there. You know. It's just like I
- 22:09Speaker 1: realized that having kids. It's just like, oh man, it
- 22:11Speaker 1: wakes something up within you that's always been there that
- 22:14Speaker 1: you were born to have, you know, that survival instinct
- 22:18Speaker 1: and all of those things. And I still that's what
- 22:22Speaker 1: I still love about it. Like I even at home,
- 22:24Speaker 1: being on the road and being in big cities all
- 22:26Speaker 1: the time and you're just surrounded with information and screens. Man,
- 22:30Speaker 1: as soon as I can get home or get outside
- 22:32Speaker 1: or get into nature. It just it wakes that stuff
- 22:35Speaker 1: back up in me and it I feel like it
- 22:37Speaker 1: puts that spark back in my eye, you know.
- 22:40Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 22:40Speaker 1: I try to stay in tune with that as much
- 22:43Speaker 1: as I can.
- 22:44Speaker 4: Well, it's clearly so appealing to people that don't experience it.
- 22:47Speaker 4: I mean, how many people that are watching shows like
- 22:50Speaker 4: Yellows don't never go into those areas, but they're watching, like,
- 22:54Speaker 4: oh yeah, I want to live like that.
- 22:56Speaker 1: We see the prices of horses. It just skyrocket for
- 23:01Speaker 1: like five grand and like fifty thousand bucks for a
- 23:06Speaker 1: trail horse, you know, which is cool. You know, I
- 23:08Speaker 1: hope people are enjoying that and getting something out getting
- 23:12Speaker 1: something out of it, you know. I still I mean,
- 23:14Speaker 1: I'm not running a bunch of cows these days, but
- 23:16Speaker 1: I keep a few horses around, and especially for the kids,
- 23:19Speaker 1: you know, and whether they want anything to do with
- 23:20Speaker 1: them or not, Like we enjoy so much in the afternoons,
- 23:23Speaker 1: go out and feed them some carrots or brushing their
- 23:26Speaker 1: tails and just being around that energy. My youngest little boy,
- 23:29Speaker 1: he's just got he's got some kind of mojo with
- 23:32Speaker 1: the animals, you know. And I've got this old mule
- 23:35Speaker 1: and her name's Honeying and she's got these big ears
- 23:37Speaker 1: and she's massive, you know. And I remember when he
- 23:39Speaker 1: was like three or four, I'd be looking around for
- 23:42Speaker 1: him in the backyard and I'd look out in the
- 23:44Speaker 1: pastor and he'd be out there with that mule and
- 23:46Speaker 1: she'd have her head down and he's just out there
- 23:48Speaker 1: petting her ears, you know, and just like his connection
- 23:52Speaker 1: with those animals. And then you know, getting kids up
- 23:55Speaker 1: to the house or are from the city that aren't
- 23:58Speaker 1: around those animals, their first time on horses or maybe
- 24:01Speaker 1: even dogs and stuff like that, and you can see
- 24:03Speaker 1: there they're so anxious and you know, not maybe so scared,
- 24:07Speaker 1: but it's just nervous.
- 24:08Speaker 4: You know.
- 24:08Speaker 1: It's just big animals and stuff. And within like twenty
- 24:11Speaker 1: minutes of just sitting them on their back or petting them,
- 24:13Speaker 1: and then you see them relax and you see that
- 24:16Speaker 1: energy kind of slow down, and uh, I just I
- 24:19Speaker 1: love that, you know, I think it's so magical to watch.
- 24:21Speaker 4: And yeah, that's another relationship that's like primal, the relationship
- 24:25Speaker 4: between people and horses. They do that with addicts. They
- 24:29Speaker 4: do equine therapy where they just have like people that
- 24:32Speaker 4: are like heavy anxiety and depression. They have them hang
- 24:35Speaker 4: out with horses.
- 24:37Speaker 1: I think even me I still do. I mean I
- 24:40Speaker 1: get depressed and stuff like that right now and then,
- 24:42Speaker 1: and I love being around them. I can walk out
- 24:43Speaker 1: to the barn and just being around them laying their wax,
- 24:47Speaker 1: and it's just like ah, yeah, all right, here we go.
- 24:50Speaker 4: Just touching their head makes you feel better, like, hey, yeah,
- 24:53Speaker 4: how are you, honey, what's happening? They look at.
- 24:56Speaker 1: Me, yeah, connect yeah, I get eye contact with it.
- 24:59Speaker 1: I think it's looking into your soul.
- 25:01Speaker 4: An ancient thing. I mean, they helped us survive, we
- 25:05Speaker 4: and you know, and we took care of them. It's
- 25:07Speaker 4: like this ancient relationship. And then when you're around them,
- 25:11Speaker 4: that connection like immediately rebonds, re establishes. I think it's
- 25:15Speaker 4: an our DNA. I mean, just think about like how
- 25:17Speaker 4: many generations of humans how to survive on horseback before
- 25:21Speaker 4: anybody invented anything else. It's like, if you wanted to
- 25:24Speaker 4: travel faster than you can run, it had to be
- 25:26Speaker 4: a fucking horse. So that was probably thousands and thousands
- 25:29Speaker 4: and thousands of years just cooked into our DNA. And
- 25:33Speaker 4: when you're around him, it's like, oh.
- 25:34Speaker 1: My friend, this is my friend, it's waking it back up.
- 25:38Speaker 4: That's weird.
- 25:38Speaker 1: It's there.
- 25:39Speaker 4: Yeah, it's weird that that stuff is in you, that
- 25:42Speaker 4: nature stuff is in you. I mean, that's why we
- 25:44Speaker 4: like watching shows like this Clay.
- 25:45Speaker 1: Guy, I love that too. I love that Steve Ornella's
- 25:50Speaker 1: show That Meet Either. I like looking at my kids
- 25:52Speaker 1: and aren't you for your friends with Remy Warren?
- 25:55Speaker 4: Oh yeah real.
- 25:56Speaker 1: He ended up being my neighbor. When I was in
- 25:57Speaker 1: Montana working on Yellowstone.
- 25:59Speaker 4: Oh really, yeah, that's crazy.
- 26:01Speaker 1: And I you know what I really liked up there
- 26:04Speaker 1: was where they filmed the show. You know, it was
- 26:07Speaker 1: kind of way out there, southwestern Montana, and a lot
- 26:09Speaker 1: of folks that were working on the show would go
- 26:11Speaker 1: back to Missoula in the cities. But I was like, man,
- 26:13Speaker 1: I want to go get as far away out there
- 26:15Speaker 1: as I can, And so I kind of went down
- 26:17Speaker 1: this West Fork area that's on the right on the
- 26:21Speaker 1: edge of the most massive wilderness areas out there that
- 26:23Speaker 1: goes into Idaho. And the road I was on, you know,
- 26:27Speaker 1: it was paved dirt, then it dead and and it
- 26:29Speaker 1: turned into a dirt road, and then I got this cabin.
- 26:32Speaker 1: It was just way back up and there was no
- 26:33Speaker 1: Wi Fi, I know nothing, you know, and I just
- 26:37Speaker 1: just disappeared out there and ended up meeting some folks
- 26:42Speaker 1: in Remy was just right down the road going towards Sula,
- 26:45Speaker 1: and so I got the chance to just go over
- 26:47Speaker 1: there and hang out with him and go stomp around
- 26:49Speaker 1: the mountains with him. It's such a cool dude. It's
- 26:51Speaker 1: like just you know, like you're talking about going to Alaska,
- 26:54Speaker 1: you know, I love going into those places, but like
- 26:56Speaker 1: you want somebody like that with you when you.
- 26:58Speaker 4: Go, for sure. Yeah, he knows how to get around. Yeah,
- 27:02Speaker 4: And he used to have a great show. Well. First
- 27:05Speaker 4: of all, he had solo hunter where he'd go and
- 27:09Speaker 4: film everything himself, which is so much more difficult than
- 27:12Speaker 4: just hunting. Set up to keep carrying tripods with him
- 27:15Speaker 4: and ship and set it up and make sure the
- 27:17Speaker 4: camera's on the animal before he would shoot it, and
- 27:20Speaker 4: then film himself, film himself moving up to there, set
- 27:23Speaker 4: up different cameras that could show him executing the shot,
- 27:26Speaker 4: and like, god, that's so complicated, and.
- 27:28Speaker 1: He's a beast man. Just trying to keep up with him,
- 27:31Speaker 1: you know, just walking around the mountains with that guy,
- 27:34Speaker 1: I'm like, oh, man, wait up, I'll be upcoming.
- 27:37Speaker 4: Yeah, they get that mountain cardio.
- 27:39Speaker 1: Yeah, he's like a mountain goat.
- 27:41Speaker 4: Well, you know, he hunts probably two hundred plus days
- 27:44Speaker 4: a year, and on top of that, he does a
- 27:46Speaker 4: lot of guiding. And when he's doing guiding, he's like
- 27:49Speaker 4: always in the mountains, always hiking. It's like you just
- 27:51Speaker 4: get conditioned to it. He's fit.
- 27:53Speaker 1: I went to Hawaii with him and did an access
- 27:56Speaker 1: hunt over there. Cool the coolest things I ever did.
- 27:59Speaker 1: And I got this buck and we're loading up in
- 28:04Speaker 1: the truck and all that, and he was like, man,
- 28:06Speaker 1: I'm gonna I'll meet you guys back at camp, you know,
- 28:08Speaker 1: and those are dark already, and like, I know, you know,
- 28:10Speaker 1: during the day we were hunting, it was just steep
- 28:13Speaker 1: mountains up and down, and uh, I said, you're just
- 28:15Speaker 1: gonna meet us back. He said, yeah, I'll meet you back,
- 28:17Speaker 1: and he just put on his backpack and just took
- 28:18Speaker 1: off running and we drove down this mountain road to
- 28:22Speaker 1: go back, and he beat us there by like a
- 28:23Speaker 1: half an hour. And that was his workout though. He's like, yeah,
- 28:27Speaker 1: I'm sparted my workout. I'll meet you guys back there.
- 28:29Speaker 1: I was like, oh, you're you're an animal.
- 28:31Speaker 4: That's access deer in Hawaii is very interesting cause they
- 28:36Speaker 4: were given to King Kamehameha in like, I don't remember
- 28:42Speaker 4: what year it was, find out what year they got
- 28:44Speaker 4: introduced there. But they're everywhere. Now. I've gone to Lanai
- 28:48Speaker 4: a bunch of times.
- 28:49Speaker 1: That's where we went.
- 28:50Speaker 2: Yeah, it was wild.
- 28:51Speaker 1: There's thousands of them everywhere and you're trying to sneak
- 28:54Speaker 1: up on a group of ten and then you don't
- 28:56Speaker 1: even realize there's like a hundred right here laying down
- 28:59Speaker 1: that you didn't even see. And then they get up
- 29:01Speaker 1: and spook the rest and standalle. You know, you've you've
- 29:03Speaker 1: been there.
- 29:05Speaker 4: Okay, it was in the eighteen hundreds, a gift to
- 29:08Speaker 4: Kim Kamehameha from India. And there's thirty thousand of them
- 29:14Speaker 4: in Lunai and only three thousand people. Yeah, it's crazy, weird.
- 29:18Speaker 4: The only place where you can go hunting bow hunting,
- 29:21Speaker 4: and you stay at the Four.
- 29:22Speaker 1: Seasons, right, said he got kicked out of there because
- 29:28Speaker 1: he was hunting so much. And you know they all
- 29:30Speaker 1: that red clay there, you know, on your boots and stuff.
- 29:32Speaker 2: He said, So the whole hotel was just like red
- 29:34Speaker 2: clay everywhere.
- 29:35Speaker 1: The fridge is just full of meat, you know, like
- 29:38Speaker 1: blood dripping out. I don't know if they kicked you out,
- 29:42Speaker 1: but he's like, well, maybe we ought to go find
- 29:44Speaker 1: somewhere else to stay.
- 29:45Speaker 4: You know, well just take off your boots before you
- 29:46Speaker 4: come into Yeah that's all it is. But yeah, it's
- 29:49Speaker 4: that weird red clay. And it all used to be
- 29:52Speaker 4: part of the Dual pineapple plantation. So when you're around there,
- 29:56Speaker 4: one of the things you notice is like there's layers
- 29:58Speaker 4: of dirt, but then there's like almost looks like plastic
- 30:01Speaker 4: bag underneath it, like a like a hefty bag from
- 30:04Speaker 4: all the farming. Yeah, so I guess they had a
- 30:07Speaker 4: layer of like that kind of whatever the fucking hefty
- 30:11Speaker 4: bag is made out of whatever the am plastic is,
- 30:13Speaker 4: and then the dirt was on top of that somehow,
- 30:16Speaker 4: and then the pineapples would grow up through it.
- 30:18Speaker 1: I just keep moisture and stuff like that in the ground.
- 30:20Speaker 4: Yeah, I would imagine, but it's it's it's disconcerting because
- 30:23Speaker 4: it doesn't feel like nature. It feels weird. It's like
- 30:26Speaker 4: it's weird. There's plastic everywhere on the ground.
- 30:28Speaker 1: Yeah, and then you set in the mountains and like
- 30:30Speaker 1: those old World War two turrets and stuff that are
- 30:32Speaker 1: up there. Come across any of this, I mean, it's
- 30:34Speaker 1: just like, yeah, first of all, like hunting axis deer
- 30:38Speaker 1: in Lanai, and like you get up on the top
- 30:40Speaker 1: and you're surrounded by the ocean. I mean, what a trip,
- 30:42Speaker 1: you know. And then it's just seeing that and then
- 30:45Speaker 1: coming across all those old relics and just all the
- 30:48Speaker 1: history there. It's just something to take into. And uh,
- 30:51Speaker 1: we are laughing because obviously they're trying to like control
- 30:54Speaker 1: the population of the axis deer there. And I think
- 30:56Speaker 1: somebody somebody mentioned like, man, I just get a couple
- 30:59Speaker 1: of angle tigers out here exactly, that'll thin out the
- 31:04Speaker 1: Population's thin.
- 31:05Speaker 4: Out the population of people too, unfortunately. Yeah, the thing
- 31:08Speaker 4: about them is that they did evolve around tigers. That's
- 31:11Speaker 4: why they're so fast, Like they'll jump a string faster
- 31:14Speaker 4: than any animal I've ever seen in my life. I
- 31:16Speaker 4: have a video of me shooting and an access deer
- 31:19Speaker 4: at eighty yards and it's we have a slow mow
- 31:22Speaker 4: of the arrow, so as the arrow's coming, it's a
- 31:26Speaker 4: perfect shot within ten yards of him. He hears it
- 31:31Speaker 4: and showing and he's gone, it's the craziest thing. Like
- 31:36Speaker 4: you look at it, You're like, how the fuck did
- 31:38Speaker 4: he move that fast? This thing's going at least from
- 31:42Speaker 4: the actual like leaving the bow, it's going two hundred
- 31:45Speaker 4: and seventy five feet per second. Yeah, and he can
- 31:48Speaker 4: get out of here without ten yards. Within ten yards,
- 31:51Speaker 4: he's hearing it coming and he's like, see ye, and
- 31:54Speaker 4: nowhere near him, Like he was a foot in front
- 31:57Speaker 4: of it. Was the arrow landed a foot behind his ass. Geez,
- 32:01Speaker 4: that's how fast they move. Yeah, it's crazy.
- 32:03Speaker 1: How long did you go there for a while or
- 32:05Speaker 1: just kind of like.
- 32:08Speaker 4: We found that the best time to hunt is actually
- 32:10Speaker 4: in the afternoon because in the afternoon it's really windy,
- 32:14Speaker 4: and when it's really windy, it covers your sound a
- 32:16Speaker 4: little bit. Okay, the morning's rough. The morning is rough.
- 32:19Speaker 4: Like the morning. I got a couple of them in
- 32:22Speaker 4: the morning, a couple of times morning hunting. I got
- 32:25Speaker 4: a deer. But it's a lot of blown stalks. You
- 32:28Speaker 4: gotta walk super slow, you gotta be real cautious. And
- 32:32Speaker 4: again there's a lot of high brush and you don't
- 32:34Speaker 4: know where the fuck they're hiding. Yeah, you got to
- 32:36Speaker 4: kind of find a pinch point.
- 32:38Speaker 1: Yeah you jump one and the rest. Yeah, sound off
- 32:41Speaker 1: the way they bark and all of that's pretty crazy.
- 32:43Speaker 4: Weird, it's a weird noise. What you got to kind
- 32:45Speaker 4: of do is like find where they're going to be
- 32:48Speaker 4: and just wait because they travel so much, they do
- 32:51Speaker 4: so much moving. You think I'm just gonna go, you know,
- 32:53Speaker 4: still hunting spot and stock, and I'll find one and
- 32:57Speaker 4: you're almost better off. Just stay and put, Just stay
- 33:00Speaker 4: and put and wait for them because they're moving all
- 33:02Speaker 4: over the place. There's so fucking many of them.
- 33:04Speaker 1: It's crazy.
- 33:05Speaker 4: But it's amazing how unsuccessful people are bow hunting them rifle.
- 33:11Speaker 4: It's a done deal if you want meat, and it's
- 33:15Speaker 4: the best meat in the world, and so it's for
- 33:17Speaker 4: the people that live there. It's incredible. I mean, they
- 33:19Speaker 4: have access to the best meat in the world. One
- 33:22Speaker 4: hundred percent. They're going to get a deer and so
- 33:25Speaker 4: if you have a but if you have a boat,
- 33:27Speaker 4: we went there and then so I went with Remy.
- 33:30Speaker 4: I went with John Dudley, Cam Haynes and Adam Greentree.
- 33:35Speaker 4: Like all seasoned bow hunters, everybody everybody got a deer
- 33:39Speaker 4: and we made a podcast about it. We had a
- 33:41Speaker 4: good old time. They had one hundred and fifty people
- 33:44Speaker 4: go over the next year and one was successful with
- 33:47Speaker 4: a bow. Yeah, that's chance. That's how hard it is,
- 33:53Speaker 4: because it's like these fuckers are they're dialed in man,
- 33:57Speaker 4: and they moved.
- 33:57Speaker 1: A lot of people chasing them too. They know the game, right.
- 34:00Speaker 4: Three hundred and sixty five days a year they get hunted,
- 34:02Speaker 4: there's no season, and then they have snipers that are
- 34:05Speaker 4: after him at night because you know, they use it
- 34:07Speaker 4: for meat for the restaurants and meet for people, and
- 34:10Speaker 4: they just have to control the population. There's so many
- 34:13Speaker 4: of them and no predators.
- 34:14Speaker 1: Yeah, and still can't thin them out right.
- 34:16Speaker 4: I know it's crazy, but I think they got a
- 34:18Speaker 4: good head start. They eradicated them from the Big Island.
- 34:21Speaker 4: Oh did they Yeah, somebody tried to reintroduce them, or
- 34:24Speaker 4: introduce I should say, to the Big Island, and they're
- 34:27Speaker 4: like no, no, no, no, no, no, no no, no, we know
- 34:29Speaker 4: where this is going. He's going to destroy people's crops
- 34:32Speaker 4: and destroy people's gardens. And they already have plenty of
- 34:36Speaker 4: wild pigs on the Big Island. So they just they
- 34:38Speaker 4: whacked them all. Unfortunately.
- 34:40Speaker 1: It's kind of like the pigs here in Texas, right,
- 34:42Speaker 1: and it gone wild. I don't you know growing up
- 34:45Speaker 1: here when I was younger and never remember them being
- 34:47Speaker 1: like how they are now.
- 34:48Speaker 4: They don't stop. They have three or four litters a year,
- 34:52Speaker 4: and each litter has I think they can have as
- 34:55Speaker 4: many as six piglets.
- 34:57Speaker 1: It's crazy.
- 34:57Speaker 4: They just and they can get pregnant six months old.
- 35:00Speaker 4: It's six months old. They can get pregnant. They're ready
- 35:03Speaker 4: to rock and they're just spitting out pigs.
- 35:05Speaker 1: And just tearing tearing shit up.
- 35:07Speaker 4: Yeah. We have a lease out here for hunting land,
- 35:11Speaker 4: me and some of my friends, and the amount of
- 35:14Speaker 4: pigs is disturbing. It's like you hear them everywhere. You
- 35:18Speaker 4: hear them in the bushes. They're all over the fucking place.
- 35:20Speaker 4: It's like most of Texas probably, that's not like city
- 35:25Speaker 4: has wild pigs in it.
- 35:28Speaker 1: Just taking over, man.
- 35:31Speaker 4: And it's all came over on boats. Yeah, that's how
- 35:33Speaker 4: it all got here.
- 35:35Speaker 1: Yeah, Yeah, it's important man.
- 35:37Speaker 4: Yeah, guys from Europe they brought boats and in the
- 35:40Speaker 4: boats some of them brought pigs and then they let
- 35:43Speaker 4: them loose.
- 35:43Speaker 1: It's crazy man tearing stuff up. Yeah, I don't ever
- 35:48Speaker 1: remember them being as bad as they were, Like no,
- 35:50Speaker 1: last fifteen years or so.
- 35:52Speaker 4: It's actually bad in California too, And California has them
- 35:55Speaker 4: from William Randolph Hurst.
- 35:56Speaker 1: Didn't they take didn't they like eradicate them off the
- 35:59Speaker 1: Channel islands out there?
- 36:01Speaker 4: I think so they I think the islands and they
- 36:03Speaker 4: had mule deer on some of the islands out there too,
- 36:06Speaker 4: right mm hmm. I forget which island had mule deer,
- 36:10Speaker 4: but apparently they had like a what you could go
- 36:14Speaker 4: hunt on one of these islands.
- 36:16Speaker 1: Yeah, I think you think you might still be able to,
- 36:18Speaker 1: like on Catalina or a couple. But maybe the crews
- 36:22Speaker 1: they did, because I know my buddy Matt, he did
- 36:26Speaker 1: it like maybe the last year or the year before.
- 36:28Speaker 1: But I think they're trying to put a stop to
- 36:29Speaker 1: it and kind of stop it. Those Channel Islands are
- 36:33Speaker 1: pretty interesting. I remember first moving out there, even just
- 36:36Speaker 1: going out there fifteen years ago and seeing the islands
- 36:40Speaker 1: out there, you know, and I'd ask people all around
- 36:42Speaker 1: it was like, man, what's the deal with these islands
- 36:44Speaker 1: out there? And half the people that I would talk to,
- 36:46Speaker 1: like what are you talking about? Islands and have like
- 36:49Speaker 1: that island right out there. They're like, oh, I thought
- 36:52Speaker 1: that was Long Beach, you know. I'm like, really, I
- 36:55Speaker 1: was like if you looked at a map, you know,
- 36:58Speaker 1: I love map. So I was started, you know, doing
- 37:00Speaker 1: some research and figuring out all about it. And they're
- 37:03Speaker 1: really cool. And over the years I've met some really
- 37:06Speaker 1: cool guys go out there a lot in Spearfish and
- 37:09Speaker 1: just to go out there to them, and besides Catalina
- 37:12Speaker 1: like Santa Cruz and San Miguel and you know, they're
- 37:14Speaker 1: all like nature preserves and protected. So it's like going
- 37:16Speaker 1: back in time when you get out there. And I
- 37:20Speaker 1: love it out there. It's such a such a cool spot.
- 37:23Speaker 4: Did they try to Are they trying to eradicate deer
- 37:26Speaker 4: from Catalina? I think I've read something about that. See
- 37:30Speaker 4: if that's true. I think they're trying to remove the
- 37:33Speaker 4: deer because they said the deer were non native to
- 37:35Speaker 4: the island, which.
- 37:36Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I think that's what they did with the hogs.
- 37:41Speaker 1: And I don't know there's like a specific island fox
- 37:43Speaker 1: out there.
- 37:44Speaker 4: Yeah, here he is. As of early twenty twenty six,
- 37:47Speaker 4: California officials have approved a controversial plan to fully eradicate
- 37:51Speaker 4: the non native mule deer population on Santa Catalina Island
- 37:55Speaker 4: to restore the ecosystem. Around two thousand deer introduced to
- 37:59Speaker 4: the nine teen thirties for hunting will be removed by
- 38:02Speaker 4: ground based hunters to protect native biodiversity. Come on, that
- 38:09Speaker 4: sounds crazy. How about just let people hunt them? Fock's
- 38:12Speaker 4: wrong with you? So the issue is Catalina Island Conservancy
- 38:18Speaker 4: considers the mule deer an invasive species that disrupts the
- 38:21Speaker 4: ecosystem as they consume native plants and seedlings while spreading
- 38:25Speaker 4: fire prone invasive grasses. Really, I just always worry about
- 38:35Speaker 4: conservancies and their judgments on things like that because there's
- 38:39Speaker 4: a lot of They want to eradicate all the pigs
- 38:41Speaker 4: from Texas or from California. Rather they think of them
- 38:46Speaker 4: as non native and they want them out to but
- 38:49Speaker 4: you're not going to. They want to eradicate. There's like
- 38:53Speaker 4: elk in California that are yellowstone elk that were brought
- 38:56Speaker 4: there in like the nineteen fifties that they want to
- 38:59Speaker 4: raty like that too, like that to the elk, No,
- 39:02Speaker 4: they're actually they're actually rocky mountain now, okay, yeah, but
- 39:05Speaker 4: they're there were a larger breed of rocky mountain elk
- 39:10Speaker 4: they call yellow apparently.
- 39:11Speaker 1: Like in the Sierras. They're down on Long the coast, and.
- 39:14Speaker 4: So Touchbee catch be up in that area on those mountains.
- 39:19Speaker 4: Big fucking elk, like four hundred inch elk, Like a
- 39:22Speaker 4: couple of those elk out there that the front, that's
- 39:24Speaker 4: what they're there's that's fair.
- 39:26Speaker 1: That's a massive that's a hone ranch. Okay, yeah, and
- 39:30Speaker 1: oh yeah, it's like going up over the grapevines exactly.
- 39:33Speaker 1: That's where you got the uh huh wow. I had
- 39:35Speaker 1: no idea that they were that big out there.
- 39:38Speaker 4: It's all. It's the biggest private ranch in California. It's
- 39:41Speaker 4: like two hundred and seventy thousand acres.
- 39:43Speaker 1: I've heard of the ranch, but I didn't know had
- 39:45Speaker 1: elk like that up there.
- 39:46Speaker 4: Yeah, one of the rare places. Gorgeous fucking place. But uh,
- 39:50Speaker 4: they also go up It's kind of funny. They go
- 39:52Speaker 4: up to there's a golfing community higher up and Tochbee
- 39:58Speaker 4: and the elk just hang out on the golf course.
- 40:01Speaker 4: Just the giant elk, like four elk just chilling, hanging
- 40:07Speaker 4: out together on the golf course and dudes are playing
- 40:09Speaker 4: golf that's why. Well they're lying down next to them,
- 40:12Speaker 4: like twenty yards away. It's crazy.
- 40:14Speaker 1: I've seen it. I saw some one time. I was
- 40:16Speaker 1: driving up the coast. I think I was going up
- 40:18Speaker 1: to San Francisco to play a gig, and uh, maybe
- 40:21Speaker 1: they're the two lee elk. I'm not sure what they were,
- 40:23Speaker 1: but I was along the coast there and I looked
- 40:25Speaker 1: over in the field and there was like thirty head
- 40:27Speaker 1: of them just laying down over the I'm like, oh, man,
- 40:30Speaker 1: I didn't even know they were elk down here. It's
- 40:32Speaker 1: just I love seeing wildlife that in unexpected places.
- 40:37Speaker 4: You know. Yeah, they recently just found a wolf unexpected
- 40:41Speaker 4: for me anyway. Oh really, yeah, see see if you
- 40:44Speaker 4: can find the story about that wolf that they just
- 40:46Speaker 4: discovered in Los Angeles.
- 40:48Speaker 1: There's a mama mama bear black bear with three cubs
- 40:51Speaker 1: running around in Topanga. Oh yeah, there's a lot of those,
- 40:55Speaker 1: a lot of lions running around.
- 40:57Speaker 4: There's a lot of a lot of bears. I've seen
- 41:00Speaker 4: him in Pasadena and people's pools.
- 41:03Speaker 1: I knew that there's a bunch out in Pasadena and like.
- 41:06Speaker 4: Wolf detected in Los Angeles County for the first time
- 41:09Speaker 4: in more than a century. Crazy and that nuts. Those
- 41:16Speaker 4: guys can fucking travel. I had a lady on who
- 41:20Speaker 4: was a wolf biologist, and she was talking about like
- 41:23Speaker 4: the you know, they would collar some of these wolves
- 41:26Speaker 4: and they would track them. They would go five hundred miles. Yeah,
- 41:29Speaker 4: like it's kind of insane.
- 41:31Speaker 1: I didn't know that. Yeah, that's incredible.
- 41:33Speaker 4: Well, that's how they learned about them. It's really the
- 41:35Speaker 4: only way to tell is to like put a collar
- 41:37Speaker 4: on them and track them by GPS. And you know,
- 41:41Speaker 4: they mean, they're extraordinary animals.
- 41:43Speaker 1: Like where were they originating from in Montana, Wyoman? And
- 41:48Speaker 1: how where were they going? The ones that they're tracking.
- 41:50Speaker 4: I think the ones that they were tracking were the
- 41:52Speaker 4: part of the group that was brought in, you know,
- 41:54Speaker 4: in the nineteen nineties, you know, so there was that pack.
- 41:58Speaker 4: In the subsequent packs after that, they were all the
- 42:01Speaker 4: reintroduced wolves, and so they would you know, dart and
- 42:05Speaker 4: call or some of them. And when they would do that,
- 42:07Speaker 4: they'd just track their motion. They're like Jesus.
- 42:10Speaker 1: Covering some ground on the ground.
- 42:13Speaker 4: They're covering some ground and it's interesting too, that they
- 42:17Speaker 4: actually make mountain lions.
- 42:18Speaker 1: Kill more deer competing with them.
- 42:21Speaker 4: Yeah, because the mountain lions kill a deer and then
- 42:24Speaker 4: the wolves will steal it. Oh, so they'll come up
- 42:27Speaker 4: on the mountain lion and they'll surround them, and the
- 42:29Speaker 4: mountain lion will go, fuck this, I'm out of here,
- 42:30Speaker 4: and he'll just go kill another deer. So he doesn't
- 42:33Speaker 4: even get a chance to eat his deer because the
- 42:34Speaker 4: wolves keep stealing his deer.
- 42:36Speaker 1: Keep tracking the lions, probably falling them around.
- 42:38Speaker 4: They're smart, man, they do. They let them do the
- 42:41Speaker 4: dirty worker, but they steal it.
- 42:43Speaker 1: Work smarter, not harder.
- 42:44Speaker 4: Huh. What does it say the wolf that they found?
- 42:47Speaker 5: Yeah, this is from February when they first spotted it.
- 42:50Speaker 4: So the wolf was born twenty twenty three Plumas Counties.
- 42:53Speaker 4: Where's Plumus County. It's traveled more than three hundred and
- 42:57Speaker 4: seventy miles, Wow, including cross seeing State Route fifty nine
- 43:01Speaker 4: near Tachapee. There you go. Yeah, they had one up
- 43:04Speaker 4: in Tachapee too, that a buddy of mine. It was
- 43:07Speaker 4: actually closer to the city that's down there. What's that
- 43:13Speaker 4: fucking city?
- 43:13Speaker 1: Bakersfield?
- 43:14Speaker 4: Bakersfield exactly. Wildlife officials now estimate at least sixty wolves
- 43:19Speaker 4: live in the state. Wow.
- 43:21Speaker 5: One crossed over in twenty eleven.
- 43:24Speaker 4: Wow, from California from Oregon. So they find him in
- 43:29Speaker 4: the tachab Mountains. Interesting, biolog just told newspaper. Biologist told
- 43:35Speaker 4: newspapers that she could encounter a mate in the nearby
- 43:37Speaker 4: regions such as Tachabe Mountains, potentially forming a new pack
- 43:40Speaker 4: or continue to roam. What was that picture you just
- 43:42Speaker 4: had of the elk. Yeah, that's that golf course. Look
- 43:44Speaker 4: at that.
- 43:47Speaker 1: Fucking elk, chill it on the golf course clash flag.
- 43:51Speaker 4: Yeah, look how beautiful that is? God, so pretty out there,
- 43:55Speaker 4: massive elk, Oak Tree country Club.
- 43:57Speaker 1: Perfect sanctuary for him, right, Oh yeah then, and it's
- 44:01Speaker 1: just it adds to the coolness of playing golf.
- 44:04Speaker 4: I mean, you're playing golf round giant, beautiful animals.
- 44:07Speaker 1: I bet those greenskeepers love them, though.
- 44:11Speaker 4: They probably fuck up all kinds of things out there. Yeah,
- 44:15Speaker 4: it's uh. The wolf thing is interesting because they they
- 44:18Speaker 4: just brought them back to Aspen and they did a
- 44:21Speaker 4: really stupid thing. They brought them into an area where
- 44:24Speaker 4: it has a lot of livestock, and they brought them
- 44:26Speaker 4: in from a place in Oregon where these wolves had
- 44:30Speaker 4: all been captured because they were killing agriculture. So what
- 44:34Speaker 4: did they do? They captured them and they dropped them
- 44:37Speaker 4: off in Colorado where they started killing. They just do it. Well,
- 44:42Speaker 4: it's on people's my friend's ranch, one of them. They
- 44:45Speaker 4: dropped three wolves off on my friend's ranch.
- 44:47Speaker 1: That's tough man, with the bears and stuff. You know,
- 44:50Speaker 1: you get some problem bears or whatever, and then they
- 44:52Speaker 1: go drop them out where the farmers and ranches are living.
- 44:55Speaker 1: You know, it's like, man, how's that gonna work?
- 44:57Speaker 4: Well, it's the people in charge of these things making
- 45:00Speaker 4: these decisions. They don't understand what they're doing. They're monkeying
- 45:03Speaker 4: around with wildlife, nature, biology, and you don't know what
- 45:08Speaker 4: you're doing. You don't, you have no idea. Also, like,
- 45:11Speaker 4: how how the fuck are you in good conscience? Take
- 45:13Speaker 4: a wolf that's used to killing cows and put them
- 45:16Speaker 4: around other people's cows.
- 45:18Speaker 1: Yeah, that's it's party programmed.
- 45:21Speaker 4: He knows exactly how to do it and knows it's easy.
- 45:23Speaker 4: They're all fenced in. They taste delicious. Why would it stop?
- 45:28Speaker 1: Or why would yeah? Why would it?
- 45:30Speaker 4: Chase?
- 45:31Speaker 1: Chase tougher prey.
- 45:32Speaker 4: Right. So now these poor ranchers have to have people
- 45:35Speaker 4: monitoring their cows twenty four to seven. They have to
- 45:38Speaker 4: have cowboys up all night that are wandering around and
- 45:42Speaker 4: on horseback and just looking for wolves. I mean, it's
- 45:45Speaker 4: a disaster. They've killed dozens of cows.
- 45:48Speaker 1: And either folks that you know have been like we've
- 45:51Speaker 1: surviving on this land for generations and dealing with that,
- 45:54Speaker 1: and you know, have a history with managing that stuff.
- 45:59Speaker 1: You know it probably the folks i'd want to ask, yeah,
- 46:02Speaker 1: how to handle it?
- 46:03Speaker 4: You know, Well, they would certainly tell you don't let
- 46:05Speaker 4: the wolves in if you do kill them, you know.
- 46:09Speaker 4: But now it's gotten to the point where I think
- 46:11Speaker 4: they're gonna have to do something about them.
- 46:13Speaker 1: Well they've said a honting limit on them.
- 46:18Speaker 4: Honestly, that would probably do something. But really what you
- 46:22Speaker 4: should do is hire someone to recapture them and don't
- 46:26Speaker 4: drop them off there. Don't drop them off in fucking aspen. Yeah,
- 46:30Speaker 4: get because they're gonna eat people's poodles too. Okay, they
- 46:33Speaker 4: don't give a ship if they run out of cows,
- 46:35Speaker 4: if somehow another rancher scare them away from the cows
- 46:38Speaker 4: and they make it into the town of Aspen. You
- 46:40Speaker 4: don't think they're gonna eat your golden retriever. They're gonna
- 46:42Speaker 4: eat all kinds of dogs. They eat dogs in Alaska
- 46:45Speaker 4: all the time.
- 46:46Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, you here with a lot like the lions
- 46:49Speaker 1: and stuff. Man coming after your kids. Yeah, you know
- 46:52Speaker 1: they instead of that Malibu Creek Park. You know, I've
- 46:55Speaker 1: heard a couple of incidents there. You know, HiT's like, man, there,
- 46:59Speaker 1: they're gonna go eat something.
- 47:00Speaker 4: Especially when they're old. Yeah, when they get old, you know,
- 47:04Speaker 4: they can't catch a deer anymore. Yeah, they're hungry and
- 47:07Speaker 4: they haven't eaten in a few days, and then they
- 47:09Speaker 4: see a kid hanging around a little too close to
- 47:11Speaker 4: the outside of the woods.
- 47:13Speaker 1: I got a big one that comes right by my house.
- 47:14Speaker 1: I got a little game trail cameras set up, and
- 47:17Speaker 1: I got a little fountain right in the front. It
- 47:18Speaker 1: doesn't come around when I'm there because we got the dogs,
- 47:21Speaker 1: you know a lot. But whenever I'm out of town
- 47:23Speaker 1: for weeks at a time, I'll come back and that
- 47:25Speaker 1: sucker's just laying on my front boards, just massive. And
- 47:29Speaker 1: then the other day a friend of mine was taking
- 47:32Speaker 1: the trash out and it was like around lunchtime, and
- 47:35Speaker 1: it jumped over the fence into the driveway and had
- 47:37Speaker 1: the dead rabbits and a dead rabbit in its mouth
- 47:40Speaker 1: just looking at her. You know, She's like, holy shit,
- 47:43Speaker 1: they're there.
- 47:43Speaker 4: You know.
- 47:44Speaker 1: So every time I don't even walking around by myself
- 47:46Speaker 1: or with the dogs, you're just like, nah, the sucker
- 47:48Speaker 1: just being a tree looking at me right now.
- 47:50Speaker 4: Yeah, living with the monsters.
- 47:52Speaker 1: Yeah, they're there.
- 47:56Speaker 4: California spent more than one hundred million dollars trying to
- 48:00Speaker 4: make a bridge over I forget which freeway it is.
- 48:05Speaker 4: Is it the one on one? I think you're right.
- 48:08Speaker 4: So they spent over one hundred million dollars and it's
- 48:10Speaker 4: still not done. Oh my god, for a bridge, a
- 48:13Speaker 4: bridge for the mountain lions, like you fucking dorsh. It's
- 48:19Speaker 4: like this idea of like it's gonna be a bridge,
- 48:22Speaker 4: but it's gonna have dirt and grass on it so
- 48:23Speaker 4: it'll encourage them to walk across so they don't have
- 48:25Speaker 4: to go over the highway and die.
- 48:28Speaker 1: It's a bit nicer than the roads we're driving on.
- 48:30Speaker 4: Yeah. Well, one hundred and ten million dollars is crazy
- 48:34Speaker 4: and it's still not even done like it is, like
- 48:37Speaker 4: it's it's so crazy. So that's what it early six, right, Yeah.
- 48:46Speaker 4: So they want to have this this big dirt mound
- 48:49Speaker 4: and this bridge so the animals can get across the highway.
- 48:53Speaker 4: But it's just like it's so goofy, And they never
- 48:56Speaker 4: want people to do anything about the population of mountain
- 48:59Speaker 4: lions regardless of how out of control they are. They
- 49:02Speaker 4: don't do anything about it. They have to hire people,
- 49:04Speaker 4: the state has to hire people to go and get
- 49:06Speaker 4: the bad mountain lions and ones of their problems. Yeah,
- 49:09Speaker 4: and when they capture them, one of the things they
- 49:11Speaker 4: find out is when they actually kill them, right. So
- 49:13Speaker 4: one of the things they find out when they examine
- 49:15Speaker 4: their diet, it's like fifty per pets. Yeah, fifty percent
- 49:20Speaker 4: dogs and cats. That's what your mountain lions are eating.
- 49:22Speaker 1: That's crazy.
- 49:23Speaker 4: Yeah. And they spend money, like a lot of money
- 49:28Speaker 4: going after these mountain lions and instead they could make
- 49:32Speaker 4: money by letting people hunt these mountain lions and giving
- 49:35Speaker 4: them tags and control the numbers in that place. To
- 49:39Speaker 4: hone ranch. One of my buddies works there, and they
- 49:42Speaker 4: have a trail camera set up on a pond and
- 49:44Speaker 4: they found sixteen different cats that were drinking out of
- 49:48Speaker 4: that pond.
- 49:49Speaker 1: Oh my gosh, that's insane. I was like when I
- 49:53Speaker 1: first started going out through to the coyotes, you know,
- 49:55Speaker 1: and even around like in Hollywood and stuff, yea elsewhere.
- 49:59Speaker 1: I just saw a kyote running down the street with
- 50:00Speaker 1: a pair of sunglasses on, eating better than any of us.
- 50:07Speaker 4: When I went there at ninety four, that was the
- 50:09Speaker 4: first time I ever saw coyote. I couldn't believe it.
- 50:11Speaker 4: I was staying at the you know, they have those
- 50:13Speaker 4: furnished apartments, the oak Wood furnished apartments.
- 50:16Speaker 1: Oh no, it's temporary.
- 50:18Speaker 4: Like for people that are like, don't have a house
- 50:21Speaker 4: yet and you got to move to California quick, they
- 50:23Speaker 4: have this place called oak Woods and you go in there.
- 50:25Speaker 4: It's already got a couch, it's already got a TV,
- 50:27Speaker 4: it's already got a bed. You're like, okay, move in.
- 50:31Speaker 4: And I was driving up to the entrance to the
- 50:35Speaker 4: place and I see these little dogs on the street.
- 50:38Speaker 4: I was like, what the fuck is going on? He's
- 50:41Speaker 4: that ain't no dog. I was like, oh my god,
- 50:44Speaker 4: they're coyotes. Like this is weird, and this is like
- 50:49Speaker 4: ninety four, I had never seen a fucking coyote, and
- 50:51Speaker 4: they had heard of a coyote being out just wandering
- 50:54Speaker 4: in the street. I just couldn't believe it that they
- 50:56Speaker 4: just wander around on the concrete.
- 50:59Speaker 1: Man, it's everywhere. I feel like I've seen more there
- 51:02Speaker 1: than any anywhere. You see him more in town than
- 51:04Speaker 1: you do anywhere else.
- 51:06Speaker 4: Yeah, they well, they have large populations of them in
- 51:09Speaker 4: downtown where they know where they're done up. They done
- 51:12Speaker 4: up in certain warehouse buildings.
- 51:14Speaker 1: Abandoned buildings and underbridges and freeways and stuff.
- 51:18Speaker 4: Yeah, they lived there. They probably keep them over one day,
- 51:23Speaker 4: won't it exactly? Yeah? Yeah, I think they probably keep
- 51:26Speaker 4: the wrap population in check though. Yeah, if you think
- 51:29Speaker 4: about it.
- 51:30Speaker 1: Yeah, I keep a lot of other things in check too, right, cats.
- 51:35Speaker 4: Well, there's a terrible video from Woodland Hills a few
- 51:38Speaker 4: years back where a guy was unloading his car and
- 51:41Speaker 4: his toddler was out there in the grass that he
- 51:46Speaker 4: grabbed his toddler trying to run away with his kid.
- 51:49Speaker 1: Yeah, I saw that, man. You know, I'm always watching
- 51:53Speaker 1: around for stuff and with my arkiddos. Are just people
- 51:56Speaker 1: around the neighborhood and stuff. You got to remind you,
- 51:58Speaker 1: remind yourself, you know, there's they're there and they're not
- 52:00Speaker 1: scared of you. You know, they're not afraid. I remember
- 52:04Speaker 1: that one of the first times I went up to Ohi,
- 52:06Speaker 1: just north of La there. You know, I just wanted
- 52:09Speaker 1: to go up there and go hike around and check
- 52:10Speaker 1: out the area. And uh, there's an archery shop up there,
- 52:15Speaker 1: and I had this old guy kind of looked like
- 52:17Speaker 1: Charlie Daniels, just big overall, his big old beard, you know.
- 52:20Speaker 1: And I walked in there and just to check out
- 52:22Speaker 1: the shop and also just ask him about, you know,
- 52:24Speaker 1: some areas to go stomp around. And I had an
- 52:29Speaker 1: Australian shepherd dog at the time, and just ask him
- 52:32Speaker 1: where you know good places go stomp around. He said, yeah,
- 52:35Speaker 1: you know, you go up there, he goes, But I
- 52:36Speaker 1: wouldn't take your dog with you. I was like, really why,
- 52:39Speaker 1: And he's like, man, those lions are real deal up here.
- 52:42Speaker 1: You know, He's like you he goes, you won't see them,
- 52:45Speaker 1: you know, until they're on you, you know. And I just,
- 52:48Speaker 1: you know, I knew they're lions and stuff like that,
- 52:50Speaker 1: but hearing it from from that guy, you know, maybe
- 52:52Speaker 1: he's try to scare me a little bit, but you know,
- 52:55Speaker 1: there's it's uh, it's a real deal.
- 52:58Speaker 4: It's real. It's real. They try to downplay it because
- 53:02Speaker 4: all the wildlife lovers, all the greenies, they don't want
- 53:07Speaker 4: you like alarm and killing them. What their goal is
- 53:11Speaker 4: to have zero hunting. Their goal is to have all
- 53:14Speaker 4: the animals just balance each other out.
- 53:17Speaker 1: I ain't gonna happen, you can't. It's not with humans.
- 53:20Speaker 4: The humans have interrupted that whole idea. Right, So if
- 53:24Speaker 4: you've got a city and then you've got wild giant
- 53:28Speaker 4: predators like one hundred and seventy pound cats that are
- 53:31Speaker 4: killing dogs, and they're like, you got to control them.
- 53:35Speaker 1: Can't manage one without managing the other, right, And.
- 53:38Speaker 4: So the first the first thing they did to stop
- 53:41Speaker 4: people from doing it is they ban hunting with dogs.
- 53:44Speaker 4: So if you ban hunting with dogs, guess what you
- 53:46Speaker 4: basically you're killing most of the hunting because the reality
- 53:48Speaker 4: of mountain lions is you can't find them. They're really
- 53:51Speaker 4: hard to find, really hard to catch, really hard to find.
- 53:54Speaker 4: And the best way to control their population is to
- 53:57Speaker 4: treat them, and you get dogs to because that way,
- 54:00Speaker 4: you know, if it's a tom, or if it's a female,
- 54:03Speaker 4: you know, if it's mature, you know what size it is.
- 54:05Speaker 4: You have a really accurate estimation. You can look up
- 54:09Speaker 4: at it. Oh that's a mature tom. That's what we're
- 54:11Speaker 4: looking to kill. And then you can control their population. Yeah,
- 54:14Speaker 4: that's the only way. Same with bears.
- 54:16Speaker 1: Great to see what it is and decide if it
- 54:18Speaker 1: needs to go or if it needs to stay.
- 54:20Speaker 4: Right, But they do little things to stop the effective
- 54:26Speaker 4: hunting first, So California, you can still hunt for black bears,
- 54:30Speaker 4: but you can't use dogs anymore. And so as soon
- 54:32Speaker 4: as they stop the use of dogs, the amount of
- 54:34Speaker 4: black bears the harvested went way down, so the amount
- 54:37Speaker 4: of bears in the population went way up.
- 54:39Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't think they I mean I know they've
- 54:41Speaker 1: been around in Pasadena a lot, but I don't think
- 54:43Speaker 1: there's been one in Tipanga for a while. I mean
- 54:45Speaker 1: I've been up there, shoot almost fifteen years and hadn't
- 54:48Speaker 1: heard of one. This is the first time that once
- 54:50Speaker 1: kind of made it over and then that air that
- 54:53Speaker 1: I know of anyway, maybe up you know, around the
- 54:57Speaker 1: Moultbout Creek and those state parks.
- 54:59Speaker 4: But Japang is probably people feed them one hundred percent,
- 55:03Speaker 4: got berries for you, my friend, and giving them weed.
- 55:10Speaker 1: Some berries.
- 55:13Speaker 4: The bang is great, but it's always sketches me out
- 55:15Speaker 4: of a fire catches.
- 55:17Speaker 1: Oh man, we got hit hard last year, as you know,
- 55:20Speaker 1: the Palisades stuff, and man, I didn't. That was kind
- 55:24Speaker 1: of it for me too. As I come out, you know.
- 55:27Speaker 4: It's terrify.
- 55:27Speaker 1: I've evacuated out of there several times over the years.
- 55:30Speaker 1: But I've got horses up there now and stuff like that.
- 55:34Speaker 1: And luckily i had like a always keep a big
- 55:37Speaker 1: truck and a trailer just in case. And I've got
- 55:40Speaker 1: some friends down in burd Bank that have some stables,
- 55:42Speaker 1: you know that I have like as a backup plan,
- 55:44Speaker 1: and but this was just a different deal. As a
- 55:47Speaker 1: crow flies, I could see the smoke from the Palisades,
- 55:50Speaker 1: you know, it's like a mile away, and we were
- 55:53Speaker 1: actually working in our arena there and smoke came up
- 55:56Speaker 1: and I was like, shoot, let's just go. Every time
- 55:58Speaker 1: I see the smoke, like I don't, I'm just like,
- 56:00Speaker 1: we'll be the first ones out. And yeah, beat the
- 56:03Speaker 1: mad rush of everybody that's going to decide to try
- 56:06Speaker 1: to stay. And loaded up the trailer and the truck
- 56:09Speaker 1: and the camper and the dogs and all that stuff,
- 56:12Speaker 1: and it was like, let's go, and uh, my wife
- 56:14Speaker 1: and I went down to Burbank, and I mean, we
- 56:17Speaker 1: were driving through the night and the wind was just
- 56:19Speaker 1: howling like I've never seen before, and power lines are snapping,
- 56:24Speaker 1: and it's just like trees are coming down, and it
- 56:27Speaker 1: just felt like the end of the world, you know.
- 56:29Speaker 1: And uh, we get to Burbank and we pulled back
- 56:32Speaker 1: in these stables and there's a kind of a big
- 56:34Speaker 1: cinder block wall and I just got as close to
- 56:37Speaker 1: that as I could because it was blocking the wind,
- 56:40Speaker 1: you know, from hitting us. And the next morning I
- 56:43Speaker 1: woke up and I was just my throat was sore
- 56:45Speaker 1: and hurt and I could hardly breathe. And I opened
- 56:48Speaker 1: the camper door and the Alta Dina fire had started
- 56:50Speaker 1: and it was right there, and so it was just
- 56:52Speaker 1: a mountain of black smoke coming over the top of
- 56:55Speaker 1: us there. And so let's go and let's get out here.
- 56:58Speaker 1: Let's like head north. And had some friends in Moore Park,
- 57:01Speaker 1: you know, up in that area going towards Venture that
- 57:03Speaker 1: had hors just trying to find some place to go
- 57:06Speaker 1: with some horses, and they're like, yeah, come on up here.
- 57:09Speaker 1: So we went up there, stayed there at night, and
- 57:11Speaker 1: then they cut all the power off up in that
- 57:13Speaker 1: area because the winds were snapping power lines and they
- 57:15Speaker 1: were worried about fires. And you know, after doing that
- 57:19Speaker 1: a few nights and I was like, let's just head
- 57:21Speaker 1: Eaes and go to Texas. You know, there's only so
- 57:26Speaker 1: many friends you could like show up with five horses
- 57:29Speaker 1: and a bunch of dogs, you know, like, hey, we're
- 57:30Speaker 1: gonna stay.
- 57:31Speaker 4: For a while, you know, especially in California.
- 57:34Speaker 1: Yeah, We're like, let's just get out of here and
- 57:37Speaker 1: headed back. And you didn't know when we were gonna
- 57:38Speaker 1: make it back, and they, you know, closed in definitely
- 57:41Speaker 1: or whatever. I just like, man, I'm over it.
- 57:44Speaker 4: I got evacuated a bunch of times when I lived there,
- 57:46Speaker 4: but the last one was twenty eighteen. And when the
- 57:51Speaker 4: last one, we got out early. I came home from
- 57:53Speaker 4: the comedy store and we saw a fire coming over
- 57:56Speaker 4: the top of this hill and it was probably like
- 57:58Speaker 4: one o'clock in the morning. Me and my wife were
- 58:00Speaker 4: sitting there. I go, what do you think. She's like,
- 58:02Speaker 4: let's get the fuck out of here, Like let's get
- 58:05Speaker 4: the fuck out of here. Let's just grab some shit
- 58:06Speaker 4: and maybe it'll come this way, maybe it won't. So
- 58:10Speaker 4: it didn't burn the house down, but my neighbors, the
- 58:13Speaker 4: front front three neighbors all lost their house, and my
- 58:16Speaker 4: next door neighbor his roof caught on fire. But my
- 58:19Speaker 4: friend who refused to leave, he stayed in the neighborhood
- 58:22Speaker 4: and protected his house and guided firefighters. He brought the
- 58:26Speaker 4: firefighters to that house and showed him that it just
- 58:29Speaker 4: started on this guy's roof, and they hosed it down.
- 58:31Speaker 4: They stopped it in its tracks. But it was pretty
- 58:33Speaker 4: fucking bad.
- 58:34Speaker 1: But it's wild because you know it's gonna burn, and
- 58:37Speaker 1: it's not a matter of you know, if it's just
- 58:39Speaker 1: a win. And I mean that's that's canyons have been
- 58:41Speaker 1: burning like that for thousands of years, and the two
- 58:45Speaker 1: mats were setting them on fire on purpose to get
- 58:46Speaker 1: ahead of it right and control and all of that stuff.
- 58:49Speaker 1: And now there's just so many houses and communities back
- 58:53Speaker 1: up in there. It's it's just a it's a tough thing.
- 58:55Speaker 1: But when they when they hit, man, it's they just
- 58:58Speaker 1: they're rolling into how fast they come through those sant
- 59:01Speaker 1: Ano wins are blowing like that, and it's just.
- 59:04Speaker 4: Very surreal in person. You can watch it on the
- 59:07Speaker 4: news and you kind of get a feeling of it.
- 59:08Speaker 4: But when you're there and you're driving down the one
- 59:10Speaker 4: o one and you look at the side of the
- 59:12Speaker 4: highway and you see like these hills in the distance,
- 59:14Speaker 4: they are just covered in fire, hundreds of yards of
- 59:19Speaker 4: fields of fire just making their way over the top
- 59:23Speaker 4: of this hill and burning houses.
- 59:25Speaker 1: And we saw it when the palace, you know, the
- 59:28Speaker 1: Palisades thing would start, you know, from our house, there's
- 59:30Speaker 1: kind of a little mountain that comes up on the
- 59:32Speaker 1: back and I hiked up there and was watching it,
- 59:35Speaker 1: and you could see the smoke and then you could
- 59:37Speaker 1: like start seeing little flickers of the flames. And then
- 59:40Speaker 1: it was just like somebody dump gasoline on this thing,
- 59:43Speaker 1: and I mean the flames shot up hundreds of feet
- 59:48Speaker 1: into the air. And my wife was on the balcony,
- 59:51Speaker 1: you know, the house, and I'm kind of up on
- 59:53Speaker 1: this little mountain. I'm looking over looking in her eyes.
- 59:55Speaker 1: I'm like start packing up. I still go up the
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: horse trailer will be able to say let's load up,
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: and just and you know, the wind was blowing like
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: offshore then you know, so the fires like on the coast,
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: you know, and just depending on where that how that
- 1:00:13Speaker 1: wind is blowing. You know, at the beginning, it was
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: blowing offshore, and then within half an hour it just
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: shot up the coastline and just ripped up through Malibu
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: and burned all that coast like that's the stuff that
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: you always thought was the safest, right you know. And
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: then the next day the wind shifts coming back on
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: shore and it blows it back towards Burbank, you know,
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: going back up like the fourth up that way, and
- 1:00:38Speaker 1: then the winds are shifting again and then coming back across.
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: You know. So I was amazed at the through some
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: of the fires that I've been through, seeing the firefighters
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: up there. Those guys are incredible, man, those helicopter pilots,
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: the airplane pilots, seeing those tankers fly through there. I mean,
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: it's just incredible what those guys can do. I mean,
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: if it hadn't, I mean, they saved that old canyon,
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: you know, up to Pang at least. You know, it's like, man,
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: there's so much brush in there that probably needs to burn.
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: It's been accumulating over years. You know, and cutting those
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: fire brakes and seeing them drop the retardant on the
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: ridge lines and stuff and watching the wind. It's just like, man,
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: hats off to those guys.
- 1:01:19Speaker 4: Absolutely, yeah. I mean, think about the amount of damage
- 1:01:22Speaker 4: that was done in that fire and how much more
- 1:01:24Speaker 4: would have been done if it wasn't for the firefighters.
- 1:01:27Speaker 4: That's how crazy it is.
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, it is.
- 1:01:31Speaker 4: Man.
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: I met one of the helicopter pilots. I was on
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: a flight somewhere and we just happened to be sitting
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: next to each other and we were talking about it,
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: and just you know, learning from him, you know about
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: you know, the thermals that come up from underneath and
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: trying to hold those helicopters in you know, information and
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: all of that stuff, and how heavy they are when
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: they're full, right, and then as soon as you release
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: all that water whatever is in them, that you know,
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: all of a sudden, that the power that they got
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: you throttle, full throttle, you know, when they're loaded down,
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: and then they drop all that water and then you know,
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: trying to get back a hold of it.
- 1:02:05Speaker 3: And I never even thought of that, And then you
- 1:02:08Speaker 3: got then you got to be a enormous different ninety
- 1:02:10Speaker 3: mile an hour winds blowing, and you know, and I
- 1:02:14Speaker 3: could see them from the house.
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: You know, there'd be like two or three helicopters that
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: would come in start dropping water, and then they would
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: move out, and then the tank the planes would come in,
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: and then helicopters back in, and then you had the
- 1:02:26Speaker 1: guys on the ground, you know, trying to contain it
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: as well. Just the coordinated effort between them. You know,
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: I can imagine the conversations there.
- 1:02:35Speaker 4: Hey man, it's so crazy that they didn't have the
- 1:02:38Speaker 4: reservoirs ready.
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: Oh dude, it's so sad.
- 1:02:42Speaker 4: I had Spencer Pratt on, you know, he's running from
- 1:02:44Speaker 4: Mayor now. He was explaining it, like how bad it was, Yeah,
- 1:02:48Speaker 4: how you fucked that up? That bad?
- 1:02:51Speaker 1: It's devastating to here that it's like, you know that
- 1:02:54Speaker 1: that stuff's coming, you know, it's just not be prepared
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: for that.
- 1:02:58Speaker 4: It's just complete acceptable incompetence. Yeah, just complete, total incompetence.
- 1:03:03Speaker 4: And yet they still are there. Yeah, like you're definitely
- 1:03:09Speaker 4: not good at the job, and yet you don't take
- 1:03:13Speaker 4: any personal responsibility and blame everybody else and the problem
- 1:03:20Speaker 4: it's just fucking it's a problem that happens every few years,
- 1:03:23Speaker 4: like you're gonna get fires period. The fact that you
- 1:03:26Speaker 4: don't have a full reservoir is crazy. It's crazy. Dump
- 1:03:30Speaker 4: all your resources into fixing that fucking reservoir stating get
- 1:03:35Speaker 4: filled up.
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: The residents are more prepared than anybody, you know, because
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: I think they just got to where they you can't
- 1:03:41Speaker 1: depend on it, you know. I mean, I know, our
- 1:03:44Speaker 1: neighbors and stuff have a pretty good program in place,
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: and we all all get together and talk about you know,
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: who's got fire hoses and swimming pools with access to
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: water and where you know, evacuation plans or you know,
- 1:03:56Speaker 1: there's some folks that will have horses, but they don't
- 1:03:59Speaker 1: even have a horse trailer up there. And you know,
- 1:04:00Speaker 1: I'm like, okay, I'll come get yours to or whatever,
- 1:04:03Speaker 1: you know, you know we need to do. And you
- 1:04:06Speaker 1: kind of just have to have that mentality I think, you.
- 1:04:08Speaker 4: Know, yeah, definitely, definitely. It's you know what's really freaking
- 1:04:13Speaker 4: me out about like the Palisades is what is in
- 1:04:17Speaker 4: the ground now, you know how much toxic shit you
- 1:04:22Speaker 4: got melted into that ground because think about how many
- 1:04:24Speaker 4: people have electric cars.
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: Now, well, all those old houses too, you're talking about
- 1:04:28Speaker 1: the materials that they're made out of asbestos or lead,
- 1:04:33Speaker 1: and I mean the stuff and the stuff in the
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: air that was even if you you know, you were
- 1:04:38Speaker 1: several miles away from the actual fires, the wind and
- 1:04:40Speaker 1: blowing all the ashes and the smoke and all that
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: stuff over. I remember going back up in there, you know,
- 1:04:46Speaker 1: weeks and just trying to get stuff out of the
- 1:04:49Speaker 1: house or whatever. When they let us back up and
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: you could still it would just make your throat hurt,
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: you know, breathing that air and stuff.
- 1:04:55Speaker 4: So right, that's bad stuff. It's not just wood fire.
- 1:04:58Speaker 1: Yeah no, no chemicals.
- 1:05:00Speaker 4: Yeah, wood fire is hard enough, but the chemicals burnt
- 1:05:04Speaker 4: TVs and computers and hard drives and electronics and refrigerators,
- 1:05:10Speaker 4: treated lumber. Yeah, all that shit's gonna get in your
- 1:05:14Speaker 4: ground water like it's it's it's on the surface, it's
- 1:05:18Speaker 4: gonna rain, it's gonna seep through, like what happens to
- 1:05:21Speaker 4: the water. Is anybody checking the water out there?
- 1:05:24Speaker 1: No?
- 1:05:24Speaker 4: You gotta imagine because I doubt it, especially like Tipanga.
- 1:05:28Speaker 4: I bet a lot of folks have wells, don't you.
- 1:05:31Speaker 1: Think I think there's some you know, it's definitely all
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: like on septic up there too, you know, I mean,
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: all the all of that building code stuff's got pretty
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: crazy up there. I don't know.
- 1:05:40Speaker 4: I would just as I would just worry about even
- 1:05:43Speaker 4: breathing the air that has the dust of all that
- 1:05:46Speaker 4: shit in it. Like I probably wouldn't want to live
- 1:05:49Speaker 4: there anymore. If I was in a place where all
- 1:05:52Speaker 4: the houses burnt to the ground and I knew there
- 1:05:54Speaker 4: was toxic shit in the ground, I'd be like, Hey,
- 1:05:57Speaker 4: let's get the fuck out of here and sell our
- 1:05:58Speaker 4: house to China.
- 1:06:01Speaker 1: Oh man, Because.
- 1:06:03Speaker 4: That's the other thing Spencer said. They're the ones who
- 1:06:05Speaker 4: are the number one land buyers. It's China.
- 1:06:08Speaker 1: It's it going to be. Is it going to be
- 1:06:10Speaker 1: a golf course resort up there before we know it?
- 1:06:13Speaker 4: Who knows?
- 1:06:13Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 1:06:14Speaker 4: Or affordable housing? Yeah, one or the other. I don't
- 1:06:17Speaker 4: know either. I don't know. But it's just I really
- 1:06:20Speaker 4: wonder what the long term damage of all those chemicals
- 1:06:25Speaker 4: in the ground is. It has to be pretty high.
- 1:06:28Speaker 1: Gotta be, you know, I don't know. You know, I
- 1:06:30Speaker 1: was talking to some friends of mine out the other
- 1:06:32Speaker 1: day that have grown up there, lived out there their
- 1:06:34Speaker 1: whole lives, and you know, going over the Channel Islands.
- 1:06:36Speaker 1: You know, they got those oil platforms out there in
- 1:06:39Speaker 1: the water, and there's been oil spills obviously throughout there
- 1:06:42Speaker 1: through history, and but also like when you're surfing and
- 1:06:45Speaker 1: stuff like that, there's oil that's been on top of
- 1:06:47Speaker 1: the ground. It's just like so surface level that's been
- 1:06:50Speaker 1: there for millions of years, you know, And so I
- 1:06:53Speaker 1: don't know, you know, it's like, I'm sure all the
- 1:06:56Speaker 1: toxic stuff that happens, how long does it take for
- 1:06:59Speaker 1: it to delude? You know, there's not much rain or
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: the wind or like what. You know. I'm not an
- 1:07:04Speaker 1: expert on it, but I feel like Mother Nature takes
- 1:07:07Speaker 1: pretty good care of herself. You know. We're the ones
- 1:07:10Speaker 1: in trouble right right.
- 1:07:11Speaker 4: Mother Nature has sorted it out over time. But I
- 1:07:14Speaker 4: just don't know how good it's going to be for
- 1:07:16Speaker 4: the people that live there. It can't be.
- 1:07:17Speaker 1: It can't be the long term.
- 1:07:19Speaker 4: You know. I have a buddy that has a house
- 1:07:20Speaker 4: out there, and he lost his house and burnt down,
- 1:07:23Speaker 4: and I asked him about it, and he said, do
- 1:07:24Speaker 4: I think what they're gonna do is take all the
- 1:07:25Speaker 4: dirt out of their backyard and then replace the dirt
- 1:07:29Speaker 4: and I'm like, Okay, I don't know if that's enough,
- 1:07:34Speaker 4: because what about his dirt? What about your neighbor's dirt?
- 1:07:36Speaker 4: What about the all the toxic shit that's in his
- 1:07:38Speaker 4: dirt that's gonna get down into your ground as soon
- 1:07:41Speaker 4: as it rains. And also with all.
- 1:07:44Speaker 1: The round up and everything else coming down, you know,
- 1:07:48Speaker 1: it's it's just it's it's sad, man, you know, it's sad.
- 1:07:53Speaker 1: That's just the kind of state of it. It's like
- 1:07:55Speaker 1: it's it seems like just it's so far of a
- 1:07:58Speaker 1: mess that even the folks that do have answers that
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: do you want to fix stuff, it just kind of
- 1:08:02Speaker 1: becomes impossible for for any solution. You know. It's like
- 1:08:06Speaker 1: all the red tape and all the hoops and things
- 1:08:09Speaker 1: and all the permits or wherever you like, you can't
- 1:08:11Speaker 1: even you know, the road's blocked. Okay, Well before we
- 1:08:15Speaker 1: could even get somebody out here with a tractor to
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: move the rocks, you got to call ten other people
- 1:08:19Speaker 1: to get it approved, and then the process and then
- 1:08:21Speaker 1: it's that and it's like that's the part. I'm It's like, man,
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: I wish I could just call Frank down the street.
- 1:08:25Speaker 2: With bulldoze or we'll go We'll just go this right now,
- 1:08:30Speaker 2: you know.
- 1:08:30Speaker 4: And it's like, you know, well, government has increased so
- 1:08:34Speaker 4: much in California, and they just want more regulations so
- 1:08:37Speaker 4: they could justify more government, and so they just regulate
- 1:08:40Speaker 4: themselves to a place where people just want to leave.
- 1:08:43Speaker 4: Just go. Look, I can't fucking do this anymore. Let
- 1:08:45Speaker 4: me get out of here.
- 1:08:45Speaker 1: And it's expensive, man, it's so expensive to live there whole.
- 1:08:50Speaker 4: It's beautiful. It's such a great place. They fucked it
- 1:08:53Speaker 4: up so hard.
- 1:08:53Speaker 1: It's paradise. The mountains within like two three hours. You
- 1:08:58Speaker 1: can be in the Sierra, so can be.
- 1:09:01Speaker 4: You can go skiing and then swim in the ocean
- 1:09:05Speaker 4: on the same day.
- 1:09:05Speaker 1: It's gorgeous. Yeah, beautiful places I've ever been in Yosemity.
- 1:09:09Speaker 1: And then get out of there.
- 1:09:10Speaker 4: You know, incredible weather.
- 1:09:12Speaker 1: Kern River. Man, it's beautiful.
- 1:09:15Speaker 4: But they got ruined. They got ruined with progressive politics
- 1:09:20Speaker 4: and bureaucracy that just ramped up all the control they
- 1:09:24Speaker 4: have over people to the point where you can't even
- 1:09:27Speaker 4: buy flavored zins. They banned blackjack. You can't have blackjack anymore.
- 1:09:35Speaker 4: They just stop blackjack in the casinos, they stop flavored zins.
- 1:09:39Speaker 4: They just they just regulated into oblivion. There are all
- 1:09:43Speaker 4: these people that want to be they want to be
- 1:09:45Speaker 4: the mommy of the world and tell you what to do,
- 1:09:49Speaker 4: like fuck off, like fuck off with all your goddamn rules.
- 1:09:54Speaker 4: You're just making your government bigger so you can justify
- 1:09:57Speaker 4: all these fucking rules and need the rules for the
- 1:10:01Speaker 4: government to sustain itself, so you just keep adding more
- 1:10:04Speaker 4: rules and adding more government. Yeah, we were reading about
- 1:10:07Speaker 4: it the other day. What was the number the California's
- 1:10:10Speaker 4: government went up by like twenty four percent and their
- 1:10:12Speaker 4: population went up by like one percent?
- 1:10:16Speaker 1: I know, And now you're running kind of we're running out
- 1:10:18Speaker 1: of places to go.
- 1:10:20Speaker 4: I forget what the actual numbers were that we found,
- 1:10:22Speaker 4: but it's.
- 1:10:23Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm always looking for hideouts, you know, to kind
- 1:10:26Speaker 1: of get away from It's like, man, you find a
- 1:10:28Speaker 1: spot to go to, you kind of don't want to
- 1:10:30Speaker 1: tell nobody about it, I know.
- 1:10:32Speaker 4: Right, you know that's what I hear about West Texas.
- 1:10:34Speaker 1: I think that is hard about Montana. You know, when
- 1:10:36Speaker 1: I first started going up there years ago, I mean,
- 1:10:39Speaker 1: it's just such a and it still is. It's a
- 1:10:42Speaker 1: paradise it's just you know, and I think that's probably
- 1:10:45Speaker 1: what a lot of people were upset about.
- 1:10:46Speaker 4: It lived up there.
- 1:10:47Speaker 1: It's like, man, the secret got out a little bit,
- 1:10:50Speaker 1: and I can understand that, but.
- 1:10:51Speaker 4: I get it. I get it from that where they
- 1:10:53Speaker 4: got to let that go?
- 1:10:54Speaker 1: Where's the next place?
- 1:10:55Speaker 4: You know? The thing about Montana though, or like Wyoming
- 1:10:58Speaker 4: another example is that winter will thin the herd.
- 1:11:03Speaker 1: It's like West Texas, Like that's funny, same kind of thing,
- 1:11:06Speaker 1: like you know, Marfa and in that area. You know,
- 1:11:08Speaker 1: I grew up all out there, going to junior rodeos
- 1:11:10Speaker 1: and all kinds of stuff, and it was just ranches,
- 1:11:13Speaker 1: you know, and you know, local diners and stuff like that.
- 1:11:16Speaker 1: And you know, I hear people going out there and
- 1:11:20Speaker 1: buying houses and you know, all that stuff. And then
- 1:11:22Speaker 1: they go out there for like a week and they
- 1:11:23Speaker 1: realize that the only thing open at nights the dairy queen.
- 1:11:27Speaker 1: They're heading back to New York pretty quick, you know.
- 1:11:29Speaker 4: Yeah, but the out winter gets you. The winter's rough,
- 1:11:36Speaker 4: it's cold. We were the first time I ever went
- 1:11:40Speaker 4: hunting was with Ranella. That's where I got that mule
- 1:11:42Speaker 4: deer that's on the table right there, and it was
- 1:11:45Speaker 4: nine degrees in October and we're camping and so we're
- 1:11:50Speaker 4: sleeping on the ground and nine degrees. I'm like, bro,
- 1:11:52Speaker 4: how did these fucking people? And you also you go
- 1:11:56Speaker 4: buy these old homesteads. So they were giving land out
- 1:11:59Speaker 4: there for people. You just you can get up chunk
- 1:12:02Speaker 4: of land just start farming on it. And the government
- 1:12:05Speaker 4: was encouraging to prove it there. But it's all this
- 1:12:08Speaker 4: like muddy ground. Like the ground is like mucky, like
- 1:12:13Speaker 4: when you hike in it after you know, a while,
- 1:12:16Speaker 4: your boots are so heavy because they're just thin with
- 1:12:19Speaker 4: this clay. Yeah, just muck all over your boots. And
- 1:12:23Speaker 4: so it's not fertile. It's not good like in the
- 1:12:25Speaker 4: Missouri breaks like that area. It's not good for growing things.
- 1:12:29Speaker 4: So you find these abandoned homesteads, it's really eerie. Yeah. Man,
- 1:12:34Speaker 4: you just think like this family that came out here
- 1:12:37Speaker 4: and like the eighteen hundreds, and they tried to set
- 1:12:39Speaker 4: up shop and maybe got killed by Indians, and you know.
- 1:12:43Speaker 1: Maybe all the way I think about my family, I've
- 1:12:46Speaker 1: got stories, you know, of them settling in New Mexico
- 1:12:49Speaker 1: and you know, coming out on a covered wagon with
- 1:12:53Speaker 1: maybe a steer and a pig, and then like, yeah,
- 1:12:56Speaker 1: here's a bunch of acres, and you got to prove
- 1:12:58Speaker 1: it up. You know, A hole in the ground is
- 1:13:00Speaker 1: what they're living in, a dugout, you know, and dig
- 1:13:03Speaker 1: a hole in the ground, that's where you're living. And
- 1:13:05Speaker 1: you tried to build a ranch out of it. And
- 1:13:08Speaker 1: I always laughed. I was talking to family or my
- 1:13:10Speaker 1: grandparents are like, why did y'all stop here?
- 1:13:14Speaker 2: You just thought you were so beat down and you're like, oh,
- 1:13:17Speaker 2: this is the.
- 1:13:17Speaker 1: Driest, flattest place, you know, but we're here the most roughest,
- 1:13:22Speaker 1: you know. I was like, it's only maybe another thousand
- 1:13:26Speaker 1: miles out to California or just keep going. They're like, no,
- 1:13:28Speaker 1: this is it. We're done, you know. Yeah.
- 1:13:31Speaker 4: I guess people didn't know what they were going to
- 1:13:33Speaker 4: find if they kept going either, like you want to
- 1:13:35Speaker 4: keep going for like another month?
- 1:13:37Speaker 1: Oh and yeah, just miles and miles of the war
- 1:13:39Speaker 1: desert and no water.
- 1:13:42Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean how long would that wagon trail take?
- 1:13:45Speaker 1: Weeks? Yeah, even just like Missouri Texas and now to
- 1:13:50Speaker 1: through what even like just going through West Texas to
- 1:13:53Speaker 1: get to you know, southeast New Mexico and all that
- 1:13:55Speaker 1: and you're in you know, that's this rough country and
- 1:13:58Speaker 1: people have always been tough out there, and.
- 1:14:02Speaker 4: Yeah, you're a sitting duck. You're slow moving with a
- 1:14:05Speaker 4: wagon pulling the horse and you got all your shit
- 1:14:07Speaker 4: in the wagon and they just looking at you from
- 1:14:09Speaker 4: the hills.
- 1:14:10Speaker 1: YEAHO wasn't glamorous, no, I know, my you know, my
- 1:14:16Speaker 1: granddad was pretty tough old guy. And there's real cowboys
- 1:14:20Speaker 1: you'd ever want to know or meet, you know, but
- 1:14:24Speaker 1: he wasn't really one to ever brag or you know,
- 1:14:27Speaker 1: talk or fantasize or romanticize about the cowboys stuff, you know,
- 1:14:30Speaker 1: because it it wasn't romantic then. You know. It was
- 1:14:34Speaker 1: survival and it was rough and it was work and
- 1:14:37Speaker 1: you had no running water. And I remember him having
- 1:14:41Speaker 1: a conversation with this guy and he was like some
- 1:14:44Speaker 1: like a tech guy, you know, he's been at all
- 1:14:45Speaker 1: this website shit or whatever, and he's asking my granddaddy said,
- 1:14:49Speaker 1: you know, what's the most important invention of your lifetime?
- 1:14:53Speaker 1: And I think he was expecting my granddad to say,
- 1:14:55Speaker 1: like the computer or the internet, and my granddad said, refrigeration.
- 1:15:00Speaker 1: It was the most important invented. You know. Yeah, he
- 1:15:03Speaker 1: was growing up he was like, they had no way
- 1:15:05Speaker 1: to keep their food cold, you know, other than like
- 1:15:07Speaker 1: root cellar, you kept it underground, you know. So it
- 1:15:11Speaker 1: was just a perspective, you know. I think everybody was
- 1:15:13Speaker 1: surprised to hear it. Yeah.
- 1:15:14Speaker 4: Well, I think people are so accustomed to electricity and
- 1:15:17Speaker 4: so accustomed to things like refrigeration. Yeah, just like.
- 1:15:20Speaker 1: They're running water. Yeah yeah, yeah.
- 1:15:22Speaker 4: I mean when there was no refrigeration, you had to
- 1:15:25Speaker 4: eat what you had, you know, like that day, and
- 1:15:28Speaker 4: then the next day you have to get something else. Yeah,
- 1:15:31Speaker 4: and unless you knew a place that was an ice house,
- 1:15:36Speaker 4: you know that would get a giant chunk of ice
- 1:15:39Speaker 4: and you could have an ice box and stick it
- 1:15:41Speaker 4: in there and cool things like you're fucked.
- 1:15:44Speaker 1: Yeah, you're on your own.
- 1:15:46Speaker 4: Yeah. Well you had to learn how to dry meat.
- 1:15:49Speaker 4: That was a lot of it, make Pemmican dry meat,
- 1:15:52Speaker 4: make things that will survive and last. And you know,
- 1:15:58Speaker 4: that's also how market hunting almost wiped out all the
- 1:16:01Speaker 4: deer in this country, because people needed fresh meat every day,
- 1:16:05Speaker 4: so they were just shooting everything that existed. And then
- 1:16:09Speaker 4: finally they started looking around and going, hey, we lost
- 1:16:11Speaker 4: all the elk. There's no more deer left like, let's
- 1:16:14Speaker 4: let's make some fucking regulations on this ship, and they
- 1:16:17Speaker 4: stopped market hunting.
- 1:16:19Speaker 1: I did not know that.
- 1:16:20Speaker 4: Yeah, it was interesting beginning of the eighteen hundreds, by
- 1:16:24Speaker 4: you know the time, I guess, But when did they
- 1:16:28Speaker 4: start doing regulations in terms of hunting regulations in this country,
- 1:16:34Speaker 4: because obviously they wiped out almost entirely the American bison.
- 1:16:38Speaker 4: They were almost gone completely. And you know a lot
- 1:16:41Speaker 4: of that was just for tongues.
- 1:16:43Speaker 1: No, man, that's crazy.
- 1:16:44Speaker 4: Yeah, they would send them back easty would pickle their tongues.
- 1:16:47Speaker 1: And Steve Rana have a like a show on. My
- 1:16:51Speaker 1: buddy was telling me, I haven't seen it yet. This said,
- 1:16:53Speaker 1: really interesting. He's talking about the history of the bison
- 1:16:55Speaker 1: and and all that. Yeah.
- 1:16:57Speaker 4: Yeah, I think his books called American Buffalo. But it's
- 1:17:00Speaker 4: really good. First hunting regulations appeared in colonial laws in
- 1:17:05Speaker 4: the sixteen hundreds, mainly as seasonal closed seasons for certain
- 1:17:09Speaker 4: game like deer. In terms of nationwide US law, the
- 1:17:13Speaker 4: first major federal game protection statute was the Lacy Act
- 1:17:16Speaker 4: of nineteen hundred, which targeted commercial and market hunting and
- 1:17:21Speaker 4: interstate trade in illegally taken wildlife Yeah, there was elkin
- 1:17:26Speaker 4: every state, and then we wiped them out and there
- 1:17:29Speaker 4: was deer in every state. But now there's more deer
- 1:17:32Speaker 4: than there ever has been before, which is interesting. Congress
- 1:17:36Speaker 4: passed the Lazy Act when modern regulations start. So the
- 1:17:41Speaker 4: nineteen hundreds, most states had game and fish commissions, hunting seasons,
- 1:17:46Speaker 4: bag limits, and license requirements, all reinforced by federal laws
- 1:17:50Speaker 4: like the Lacy Act and later migratory bird protections. Well,
- 1:17:55Speaker 4: it's amazing that they did that. We have an amazing
- 1:17:58Speaker 4: system too, like the the fact that the United States
- 1:18:01Speaker 4: has so much public land. You know, there's so many
- 1:18:04Speaker 4: different places where people can go and they can hike,
- 1:18:07Speaker 4: they can white water raft, they can fish, they can hunt,
- 1:18:10Speaker 4: they can camp. I mean, we're unlike any country when
- 1:18:14Speaker 4: it comes to that. It's like the amount of land
- 1:18:17Speaker 4: that we have that's available to Americans that every it's
- 1:18:20Speaker 4: public for everybody. Yeah, it's fucking incredible.
- 1:18:23Speaker 1: Yeah, I being up in Montana and New Mexico's like
- 1:18:26Speaker 1: that too. In California. Up in Montana when I love
- 1:18:29Speaker 1: you know, staying in that wilderness area, Like that little
- 1:18:31Speaker 1: cabin that I stayed in, you know, probably didn't have
- 1:18:34Speaker 1: much land. With the cabin. But man, there's thousands and
- 1:18:39Speaker 1: thousands of acres of wilderness public land with dirt roads everywhere. Man,
- 1:18:43Speaker 1: I would you know, on those days off that I had,
- 1:18:47Speaker 1: I would just drive back in there for miles, man,
- 1:18:50Speaker 1: and just see the most beautiful country, you know, And
- 1:18:53Speaker 1: and I'd haul my horse back in the way to
- 1:18:55Speaker 1: the trailheads and just go explore stuff, you know, And
- 1:18:58Speaker 1: you go over one ridge into the next, and there's
- 1:19:01Speaker 1: a waterfall, and there's there's another drainage, and it's just
- 1:19:04Speaker 1: like you know, and this is the wilderness area too.
- 1:19:07Speaker 1: This isn't even a national park, you know. I was like, man,
- 1:19:09Speaker 1: this is as beautiful country as I've ever seen.
- 1:19:13Speaker 4: Did runlies?
- 1:19:15Speaker 1: I never did, you know. I was always all my
- 1:19:18Speaker 1: toes about it, and I'd talked, you know, no one
- 1:19:21Speaker 1: rem me up there. He knew that area really well,
- 1:19:22Speaker 1: so I'd kind of ask him spots to go check out,
- 1:19:25Speaker 1: and about bears and stuff, and he said, man, there
- 1:19:27Speaker 1: weren't too many grizzlies back in there, but you never know,
- 1:19:30Speaker 1: you know, especially coming over from Idaho and stuff like that.
- 1:19:33Speaker 1: So I never did. I've run into some black bears,
- 1:19:37Speaker 1: never in any any wolves and all that. But you know,
- 1:19:41Speaker 1: I don't know, maybe being horseback too. I don't know
- 1:19:44Speaker 1: a lot of those places I did, but I definitely
- 1:19:48Speaker 1: had my eyes open.
- 1:19:50Speaker 4: Yeah, that's another animal that they want to list again
- 1:19:53Speaker 4: and make them available for hunting. Particularly in Montana and Wyoming.
- 1:19:58Speaker 4: They just have a lot of grizzlies. They have a lot,
- 1:20:01Speaker 4: and people don't want you to shoot them. They think
- 1:20:03Speaker 4: of it as trophy hunting or whatever. It is.
- 1:20:06Speaker 1: Like it's tough, man, but man, you live, like you said,
- 1:20:08Speaker 1: like those folks that live back up in there, you know,
- 1:20:11Speaker 1: they all they have is their neighbors and people to
- 1:20:13Speaker 1: depend on, you know, and it's like, man, you get
- 1:20:15Speaker 1: mauled by a bear taking your trash out or something
- 1:20:18Speaker 1: like that. That's what your experiences with them. And you know,
- 1:20:23Speaker 1: everybody wants to keep them as pets until they're in
- 1:20:25Speaker 1: the backyard with you. Yeah.
- 1:20:28Speaker 4: They don't play by the rules. Yeah, they don't play
- 1:20:30Speaker 4: by the rules. And they're nine hundred pounds good, nine
- 1:20:34Speaker 4: hundred pounds giant fucking wild animal that eats everything it can.
- 1:20:38Speaker 1: Yeah, even like that the lion hanging around my house.
- 1:20:40Speaker 1: It's like, man, I'm cool, You're You're fine. But once
- 1:20:43Speaker 1: you go on down the road, you know, Yeah, I
- 1:20:47Speaker 1: don't need you in my backyard.
- 1:20:48Speaker 4: The thing is that you can't do anything about it
- 1:20:50Speaker 4: either in toxes. You could just shoot them.
- 1:20:52Speaker 1: Yeah, and yeah, we don't have that problem.
- 1:20:55Speaker 4: Yeah, that's how it should be. Yeah, like you shouldn't
- 1:20:57Speaker 4: have wild monsters living in your yard.
- 1:21:02Speaker 1: You should have You should have the right to decide
- 1:21:04Speaker 1: that for yourself.
- 1:21:05Speaker 4: Not only that they're gonna be fine, there's still gonna
- 1:21:08Speaker 4: be plenty of them, Yeah, okay, but it'll probably be
- 1:21:10Speaker 4: a more healthy number if they get whacked whenever they
- 1:21:13Speaker 4: eat someone's dog.
- 1:21:14Speaker 1: Yeah, and have a healthy respect for coming in your
- 1:21:16Speaker 1: backyard or coming after your or your kids.
- 1:21:18Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, they they should understand that. But just like
- 1:21:23Speaker 4: we're so goofy, we make laws to protect them that
- 1:21:27Speaker 4: don't protect us. Like, help me out, Like, do you
- 1:21:31Speaker 4: love animals more than people? Like I love animals, But
- 1:21:35Speaker 4: I'm I'm on teen people. Yeah, everybody else is cool,
- 1:21:40Speaker 4: but teen people first. Yeah, you know, oh, we got
- 1:21:44Speaker 4: monsters in our neighborhood and no, no, no, no no no,
- 1:21:46Speaker 4: we got to kill the monsters so that the kids
- 1:21:48Speaker 4: could play outside. You don't have to worry about them
- 1:21:50Speaker 4: getting eaten.
- 1:21:51Speaker 1: Yeah, me too. I mean growing up ranching or farming
- 1:21:54Speaker 1: or what I mean, that's your job is to take
- 1:21:56Speaker 1: care of animals, you know, yes, animal husband, vidiots, it's
- 1:22:00Speaker 1: that's your job. I mean, to take care and provide
- 1:22:04Speaker 1: for these animals, to provide food for your family, you know,
- 1:22:07Speaker 1: and and the wildlife that's around it. You know, it's
- 1:22:10Speaker 1: like and to take care of the land and the
- 1:22:12Speaker 1: dirt and the water and the grasses and all of
- 1:22:16Speaker 1: that stuff has to be supporting each other to make
- 1:22:18Speaker 1: it all work, you know. And at the end of
- 1:22:22Speaker 1: the day, I just feel like we've just lost touch.
- 1:22:24Speaker 1: It's city that you.
- 1:22:26Speaker 4: Know, it's urban environments. It's unnatural environments that have given
- 1:22:29Speaker 4: people this delusional idea of what our relationship is with nature.
- 1:22:35Speaker 4: And you know, people just think food comes from a restaurant. Yeah,
- 1:22:39Speaker 4: and you know, the ground is for streets.
- 1:22:42Speaker 1: And you drive pave it all.
- 1:22:45Speaker 4: It's all just this delusional perspective that comes from that
- 1:22:48Speaker 4: sort of urban existence. And I just think that's why
- 1:22:52Speaker 4: people that live in the country and live in you know,
- 1:22:56Speaker 4: environments where like Alaska, where you're confronted by nature more
- 1:23:00Speaker 4: interesting people. They're more robust, they're cooler. Were you singing
- 1:23:05Speaker 4: out there earlier that you rode bulls? Mm hmm, yeah, dude,
- 1:23:11Speaker 4: how many times?
- 1:23:13Speaker 5: Shoot?
- 1:23:13Speaker 1: I started when I was a kid, you know, riding
- 1:23:15Speaker 1: steers when I was like ten in the junior rodeos.
- 1:23:18Speaker 1: And then you were.
- 1:23:19Speaker 4: Ten years old and someone let you ride a fucking steer. Really,
- 1:23:24Speaker 4: that's it was.
- 1:23:24Speaker 1: Just like it was like litt League baseball, you know
- 1:23:26Speaker 1: where I grew up.
- 1:23:29Speaker 4: So a steer is a bull that doesn't have a nuts,
- 1:23:32Speaker 4: and so how much less do they kick when they
- 1:23:35Speaker 4: don't have their nuts? Oh?
- 1:23:36Speaker 1: They're pretty dark? Yeah?
- 1:23:40Speaker 4: How old are you hear?
- 1:23:42Speaker 1: This is? I was like seventeen. This is in Monterey, Mexico.
- 1:23:46Speaker 4: Actually, wow, why in Mexico? Look at you dog? Damn
- 1:23:53Speaker 4: that's crazy. Damn dude, you're good and you got off
- 1:23:58Speaker 4: without getting stomped too. Is it just knowing when to release?
- 1:24:02Speaker 1: Yeah, you gotta know. You got to know when to
- 1:24:04Speaker 1: get off, that's for sure. And right there, uh huh,
- 1:24:07Speaker 1: you're like that's around. Yeah, he kind of bucked me
- 1:24:10Speaker 1: off there. He kind of had me over to the
- 1:24:11Speaker 1: side the are you know, but that's a good time
- 1:24:14Speaker 1: to check out. There's like that gray zone. You know,
- 1:24:16Speaker 1: either that or you hang on and you end up
- 1:24:18Speaker 1: underneath them.
- 1:24:19Speaker 4: You started out when you were ten years old, though,
- 1:24:22Speaker 4: How wild are your parents?
- 1:24:23Speaker 1: Like?
- 1:24:24Speaker 4: Yeah, that's a good age.
- 1:24:24Speaker 1: Yeah, well they you know, they ranched and grew up
- 1:24:27Speaker 1: out there. And my my uncle rode bulls professionally and
- 1:24:30Speaker 1: really yeah, and uh that's kind of how I got
- 1:24:33Speaker 1: into it too. I looked up to him a lot,
- 1:24:35Speaker 1: and uh see pictures of him riding bulls, and then
- 1:24:38Speaker 1: it was just around and I was like, I want
- 1:24:40Speaker 1: to go try that, you know, and then I just
- 1:24:43Speaker 1: got the bug for it, like super young. I was like,
- 1:24:45Speaker 1: just ate up with it.
- 1:24:47Speaker 4: Just wow, from ten years old, that's nuts. Yeah, And
- 1:24:51Speaker 4: so how do you teach someone how to fall off
- 1:24:54Speaker 4: of a bull without getting stomped when they're ten?
- 1:24:57Speaker 1: Well, when you're riding those little steers, you know a
- 1:24:59Speaker 1: lot of time that they cut bulls and turn them
- 1:25:01Speaker 1: to steers. It makes them steers are you know, typically
- 1:25:05Speaker 1: like six hundred pounds six seven hundred pounds, you know,
- 1:25:09Speaker 1: compared to fifteen hundred pounds bull that's aggressive and you
- 1:25:13Speaker 1: know back that wide horns like that, you know, they're
- 1:25:16Speaker 1: like the little steer you know. I remember my dad
- 1:25:19Speaker 1: or uncle would get in the shoot with me and
- 1:25:20Speaker 1: hold their horns, you know, and like these they just
- 1:25:23Speaker 1: kind of run out there and jump and kick and
- 1:25:25Speaker 1: not fall it up on the side, Yeah, not too bad.
- 1:25:29Speaker 1: And then you kind of graduate up into like the
- 1:25:31Speaker 1: junior bulls and then the bigger pulls and then all
- 1:25:34Speaker 1: and then the harder they buck, you know, So there's
- 1:25:37Speaker 1: kind of different levels. You can progress as you as
- 1:25:40Speaker 1: you go. But it was a lot different deal back
- 1:25:43Speaker 1: then when I was riding. It was really before the
- 1:25:45Speaker 1: PVR started. You know, there was no helmets, there was
- 1:25:47Speaker 1: no vests, there's like none of that stuff. It is
- 1:25:51Speaker 1: just old school rodeo, you know. But at the same
- 1:25:54Speaker 1: time I say that, but you know, it's it's evolved
- 1:25:58Speaker 1: in such a sport now. Like the bulls there's just
- 1:26:00Speaker 1: so much rancor now than they were back then.
- 1:26:02Speaker 4: You know.
- 1:26:03Speaker 1: It's like now they're breeding them like racehorses, and the
- 1:26:06Speaker 1: genetics where every one of those bulls, you know bucks,
- 1:26:10Speaker 1: you know, and like you got to go to get
- 1:26:11Speaker 1: on three or four of them in the night.
- 1:26:12Speaker 4: You know.
- 1:26:13Speaker 1: Back when I was doing it, we'd go to the they
- 1:26:15Speaker 1: were still kind of full rodeos with all the other events,
- 1:26:18Speaker 1: and you know, out of fifteen or twenty bulls, there
- 1:26:20Speaker 1: might be one or two in there that were like
- 1:26:22Speaker 1: bad to get on it would hurt you.
- 1:26:24Speaker 4: You know.
- 1:26:25Speaker 1: The rest of them were pretty rideable, you know, just
- 1:26:28Speaker 1: to say so. And you know we're smoking cigarettes and
- 1:26:31Speaker 1: drinking beer back behind the shoots, so you know that
- 1:26:33Speaker 1: kind of a thing. You know, we we weren't training
- 1:26:36Speaker 1: and doing yoga and.
- 1:26:40Speaker 2: Like all these guys out of the day, you know.
- 1:26:42Speaker 1: But I loved it. I had so much fun. And
- 1:26:45Speaker 1: I loved the road part of it. You know, get
- 1:26:47Speaker 1: in the truck with your best buds and go down
- 1:26:50Speaker 1: the road on the weekends and there's always a band playing,
- 1:26:52Speaker 1: and you know, it was just it was so much fun.
- 1:26:55Speaker 1: I loved the culture of it, and it's just a
- 1:26:58Speaker 1: good good times.
- 1:26:59Speaker 4: You know, how many times do you think you've rode bulls?
- 1:27:02Speaker 1: I mean I rode till I was about twenty three.
- 1:27:05Speaker 4: From ten to twenty three.
- 1:27:07Speaker 1: Wow, that was all I ever wanted to do. And
- 1:27:09Speaker 1: I was like, yeah, wanted to just ride bulls. Yeah,
- 1:27:13Speaker 1: and uh, you know, I rode in high school, rode
- 1:27:15Speaker 1: junior rodeos, road bulls at high school and then I
- 1:27:18Speaker 1: went to Tarlton State and Stephenville and uh rode bulls
- 1:27:21Speaker 1: for Tarleton and then I got my pro card for
- 1:27:24Speaker 1: a couple of years, and that was when like the
- 1:27:27Speaker 1: PBR was like starting up and all of that, and wow,
- 1:27:34Speaker 1: it got intense.
- 1:27:35Speaker 5: Backwards on one. But Jamie was one of the picture
- 1:27:37Speaker 5: I just lost.
- 1:27:38Speaker 1: He was backwards on it. Oh yeah, I was probably
- 1:27:40Speaker 1: getting there. I was probably getting dusted. Oh no, that's no,
- 1:27:45Speaker 1: that's not that guy is about riding backwards.
- 1:27:50Speaker 5: I don't know if that's on purpose.
- 1:27:54Speaker 4: He Yah, what a terrible choice. Yeah, it was cool though.
- 1:28:02Speaker 1: I loved it, man, I loved it.
- 1:28:05Speaker 4: How do you go from that to anything else? Like
- 1:28:08Speaker 4: how do you stop writing bulls and eventually become an
- 1:28:12Speaker 4: actor and a singer.
- 1:28:13Speaker 1: It was all very much a kind of a natural progression,
- 1:28:17Speaker 1: you know, since I was a kid. At the junior rodeos,
- 1:28:19Speaker 1: there was always a dance afterward and a band playing,
- 1:28:21Speaker 1: you know, and it was a very much a family
- 1:28:24Speaker 1: community deal, you know, like you go to these towns
- 1:28:27Speaker 1: and it was the junior the rodeo was going on,
- 1:28:29Speaker 1: and then the dance, the street dance and food and
- 1:28:34Speaker 1: music and you know, growing up listening to the bands play,
- 1:28:36Speaker 1: especially in Texas. You know, you got all the guys
- 1:28:38Speaker 1: like Gary p. Nunn and I remember he always played
- 1:28:41Speaker 1: the dance halls, and you get Robert o'keine and some
- 1:28:44Speaker 1: of the you know, hearing those bands. And I moved
- 1:28:48Speaker 1: to Laredo, Texas when I was like sixteen or seventeen
- 1:28:52Speaker 1: with my dad and my mother had bought me a
- 1:28:53Speaker 1: guitar and didn't know how to play it much. And
- 1:28:59Speaker 1: walked into this place my dad was living at and
- 1:29:01Speaker 1: he was playing dominoes with these guys. And this guy
- 1:29:04Speaker 1: saw my guitar and he's like, yeah, you know how
- 1:29:06Speaker 1: to play that thing. I said no, and he said, well,
- 1:29:09Speaker 1: let me see it. And he picked it up and
- 1:29:10Speaker 1: played this killer like mariachi song called a Malagania, and
- 1:29:13Speaker 1: I was just fascinated. I was just like, wow, I
- 1:29:16Speaker 1: can't believe he made that guitar sound like that. You know,
- 1:29:19Speaker 1: I've been dragging that thing around for a couple of years.
- 1:29:21Speaker 1: I didn't even know how to tune it up. And
- 1:29:23Speaker 1: he's like, you want to learn how to play this guitar?
- 1:29:25Speaker 1: And I said yeah. He said, let me show you
- 1:29:27Speaker 1: this song. He taught me the Malagania. I had a
- 1:29:30Speaker 1: couple of little parts, you know, a fingerpicking part, it's
- 1:29:32Speaker 1: a strumming part, and it really kind of gave me
- 1:29:36Speaker 1: that foundation, you know, just kind of those few little tools.
- 1:29:39Speaker 1: And then I went up to Stephenville to ride Bulls
- 1:29:42Speaker 1: a tarleton after that, and a couple of other friends
- 1:29:45Speaker 1: that I'd met there that Rediod could play the guitar
- 1:29:47Speaker 1: a little bit, and they had bands that played every
- 1:29:49Speaker 1: weekend in the town. It was a little bar there
- 1:29:52Speaker 1: called City Limits where all these bands would come play,
- 1:29:54Speaker 1: like Jason Bowling and the Cross Canadian rag Weed guys,
- 1:29:57Speaker 1: and Pat Green and Robert O'Keane, like all the Texas
- 1:30:01Speaker 1: guys would come play, you know. So I was like
- 1:30:03Speaker 1: I went from being on the border just kind of
- 1:30:06Speaker 1: just mostly like the Correos and Tejano bands that I
- 1:30:08Speaker 1: would see, which was really cool. But when I got
- 1:30:10Speaker 1: up there, I was like, oh man, there's all these
- 1:30:12Speaker 1: like cool kind of song you know, guys writing the
- 1:30:15Speaker 1: original music and songs and playing in bands, and we'd
- 1:30:19Speaker 1: go watch them all the time. And as I was
- 1:30:22Speaker 1: still Rodeo and the only song I knew was that
- 1:30:26Speaker 1: mallea game the tune, so I was like, I got
- 1:30:28Speaker 1: to come up with some new stuff, is all I
- 1:30:29Speaker 1: know how to play, you know. So I went and
- 1:30:31Speaker 1: got a book of chords to teach myself some new
- 1:30:33Speaker 1: chords on the guitar, and I just learned one or
- 1:30:36Speaker 1: two at a time, and I'd start making up songs
- 1:30:38Speaker 1: about our adventures on the weekends.
- 1:30:39Speaker 4: You know.
- 1:30:40Speaker 1: A lot of it was just sitting in the back
- 1:30:42Speaker 1: of the truck and being in places where you didn't
- 1:30:44Speaker 1: have radio signal or you know, nothing to really listen
- 1:30:47Speaker 1: to you or tired of listening to the same old stuff.
- 1:30:49Speaker 1: And I'd make up songs and then whatever town we
- 1:30:52Speaker 1: would get to, my buddies be like, man, play that
- 1:30:54Speaker 1: song you were singing in the back seat, you know.
- 1:30:56Speaker 1: And and so that's how the whole songwriting thing started.
- 1:30:59Speaker 1: And then and I ended up getting a job working
- 1:31:02Speaker 1: for a guy named Mac Altizer. He had a rodeo
- 1:31:04Speaker 1: company called Bag Company Rodeo and del Rio, and I'd
- 1:31:09Speaker 1: ridden bulls some of his rodeos and knew him. My
- 1:31:12Speaker 1: uncle had knew him, you know, over the years, and
- 1:31:14Speaker 1: so it was kind of familiar with that whole thing.
- 1:31:17Speaker 1: And started working for him on the ranch and helping
- 1:31:21Speaker 1: with some of the rodeo stuff and still riding bulls.
- 1:31:23Speaker 1: And he found out that I could play the guitar
- 1:31:25Speaker 1: and sing a few songs. And he always had a
- 1:31:28Speaker 1: party at the rodeo. He was kind of notorious and
- 1:31:31Speaker 1: famous for having like just awesome parties. And he's like, man,
- 1:31:34Speaker 1: all right, Bingham, get your guitar, you're going to play
- 1:31:36Speaker 1: like the after party, you know, and pulled the flatbed
- 1:31:38Speaker 1: trailer up there for the hospitality tent for all the
- 1:31:40Speaker 1: contestants after the rodeo, and those are like the first
- 1:31:44Speaker 1: He really encouraged me to like start playing for people
- 1:31:46Speaker 1: and doing that, and then it would just spill over
- 1:31:48Speaker 1: into the bars afterwards after the rodeo, and everybody would
- 1:31:51Speaker 1: end up going to the bar, and I was like
- 1:31:54Speaker 1: being and bring a guitar with you, And I started
- 1:31:56Speaker 1: getting gigs in the bars. The bars would ask me
- 1:31:59Speaker 1: if I want to come back and play, and just
- 1:32:01Speaker 1: after like, I feel like a few years of that.
- 1:32:04Speaker 1: It's just like, you know, I was kind of a
- 1:32:07Speaker 1: weekend where riding bulls. I was definitely not going to
- 1:32:09Speaker 1: making a living doing it. Always had to have a
- 1:32:12Speaker 1: day job during the week, you know, if you're working
- 1:32:14Speaker 1: on the ranch or doing something. And I started getting
- 1:32:18Speaker 1: to where I could go to these bars and make
- 1:32:19Speaker 1: like a hundred bucks and tips, you know, within a
- 1:32:22Speaker 1: couple of hours, and get free beard, free food. And
- 1:32:25Speaker 1: I was like, man, this is almost as much as
- 1:32:27Speaker 1: I made all day digging holes out with a shovel.
- 1:32:30Speaker 4: You know.
- 1:32:31Speaker 1: It didn't take me long to figure out that that
- 1:32:33Speaker 1: was pretty cool. And I was just like, I'm gonna
- 1:32:36Speaker 1: stick with it.
- 1:32:37Speaker 4: Yeah, what an organic sort of a journey, you know,
- 1:32:41Speaker 4: like a natural progression. Yeah.
- 1:32:44Speaker 1: And I didn't have high expectations, you know, but I
- 1:32:46Speaker 1: just like, and I was talking about kind of community
- 1:32:50Speaker 1: in this Austin area and in Texas in general. It's
- 1:32:52Speaker 1: just like, man, people were so supportive then. I'm just like,
- 1:32:54Speaker 1: if you had a song.
- 1:32:55Speaker 4: To play it.
- 1:32:56Speaker 1: People love live music. They're like, yeah, I get up
- 1:32:58Speaker 1: and play, you know, like act with the Rodeo Company
- 1:33:01Speaker 1: and all the guys that worked there, Dave Jennings and
- 1:33:05Speaker 1: Casey and Smurt. There's a whole crew of the Bad
- 1:33:07Speaker 1: Company crew from those days. And they always had kind
- 1:33:09Speaker 1: of the Bad Company house band too, where everybody would
- 1:33:12Speaker 1: get up and try to play a song. And it's
- 1:33:13Speaker 1: just like, man, we don't care if it's any good
- 1:33:16Speaker 1: or not. Just get up there and play. We're all
- 1:33:17Speaker 1: we're all in it together. And there were so many
- 1:33:20Speaker 1: like places that were like that that I don't think
- 1:33:22Speaker 1: if I was in that environment, I probably would never
- 1:33:24Speaker 1: pursued it.
- 1:33:25Speaker 4: You know.
- 1:33:26Speaker 1: I've had so many people, you know, supporting you and
- 1:33:28Speaker 1: encouraging to try it. And it took me a long time,
- 1:33:31Speaker 1: you know, to work stuff out and learn because I
- 1:33:35Speaker 1: didn't have any really formal music musical background or lessons
- 1:33:39Speaker 1: or training. I'd really just learned it on the road
- 1:33:41Speaker 1: and playing in bars and from other musicians.
- 1:33:45Speaker 4: Yeah, no lessons at all, just now fig along the way.
- 1:33:49Speaker 1: Yeah, well they got you know, the guy taught me
- 1:33:51Speaker 1: the La Malagania there. But then after that it was
- 1:33:54Speaker 1: just you know, anybody else who had a guitar and
- 1:33:57Speaker 1: might know a song, you know, like, oh what cool,
- 1:33:59Speaker 1: how do you play that chord? You're like, oh, you
- 1:34:01Speaker 1: play it like this? You know, yeah?
- 1:34:05Speaker 4: Wow? So how many years were you doing that before
- 1:34:10Speaker 4: you got Yellowstone?
- 1:34:13Speaker 1: Oh gosh, for a while. I mean I think my
- 1:34:16Speaker 1: you know, I was twenty two or something like that.
- 1:34:21Speaker 1: And Stephen Bill, you know, Ryan Bull is starting to
- 1:34:23Speaker 1: play songs, trying to play gigs after the you know,
- 1:34:30Speaker 1: ended up moving down here to New Bronfels in the
- 1:34:32Speaker 1: Austin area playing music for a while, and ended up
- 1:34:35Speaker 1: going out to Los Angeles and playing and then hit
- 1:34:37Speaker 1: the road with the band for I think I had
- 1:34:41Speaker 1: four or five albums or so, you know out you know,
- 1:34:44Speaker 1: and been touring for five or six years. I think
- 1:34:48Speaker 1: how old was I like when Yellowstone started, like thirty
- 1:34:53Speaker 1: six thirty seven, So yeah, I'd been playing doing the
- 1:34:56Speaker 1: music stuff for a long time.
- 1:35:00Speaker 4: So how did the yel How did you go from
- 1:35:01Speaker 4: music to the Elstone?
- 1:35:02Speaker 1: Like?
- 1:35:02Speaker 4: How did you even? Did you do any acting before that?
- 1:35:06Speaker 1: No, I've been one of I've done a film with
- 1:35:08Speaker 1: Jeff Bridges years ago called crazy Heart and wrote some
- 1:35:11Speaker 1: songs for that movie, and that was really my own thing.
- 1:35:15Speaker 4: That was a good movie.
- 1:35:17Speaker 1: It was pretty cool, you know. I was just like,
- 1:35:20Speaker 1: Jeff Bridges plays a musician in the show and I
- 1:35:23Speaker 1: and we're like the backup band at the bowling alley
- 1:35:25Speaker 1: for one of the scenes, you know, which was really cool.
- 1:35:29Speaker 1: And then written some songs for some other films and
- 1:35:33Speaker 1: some TV shows since then, And I met a game
- 1:35:35Speaker 1: named John Linson out and uh, and he's a producer
- 1:35:39Speaker 1: and him and his dad Artlens, and they did like
- 1:35:42Speaker 1: Sons of Anarchys, a bunch of shows and a bunch
- 1:35:45Speaker 1: of great movies. And he introduced me to Taylor, and
- 1:35:50Speaker 1: Taylor was I think it was that movie Wyinn River,
- 1:35:53Speaker 1: his first movie. You know. I'd met Taylor and just
- 1:35:56Speaker 1: kind of talk about music and stuff, and he wanted
- 1:35:58Speaker 1: me to write a song for Wynn River, and I'd
- 1:36:01Speaker 1: given it a shot a couple of times, never really
- 1:36:03Speaker 1: had anything that fit for what he wanted, but he
- 1:36:05Speaker 1: ended up using a song that I'd already written, and
- 1:36:08Speaker 1: and we just kind of kept a touch, and then
- 1:36:10Speaker 1: when the Yellowstone thing came up, he got in touch
- 1:36:13Speaker 1: again about writing some songs for the show. And then
- 1:36:16Speaker 1: he learned that I used to do all the rodeo stuff,
- 1:36:18Speaker 1: I think, and grew up ranching. And he's like, well, shoot,
- 1:36:20Speaker 1: you can do a lot of this stuff. I gotta
- 1:36:22Speaker 1: find a way to get you in the show, you know.
- 1:36:25Speaker 1: And it literally went from the conversations like, well, I
- 1:36:29Speaker 1: don't know what I'm gonna do with you, but I'm
- 1:36:30Speaker 1: gonna I'll find something to do with you, you know, And
- 1:36:32Speaker 1: and he literally said. He's like, you know, if you
- 1:36:35Speaker 1: do good, I'll you know, he goes, if you suck,
- 1:36:37Speaker 1: I'll kill you off. If you keep you on.
- 1:36:41Speaker 2: Something like that.
- 1:36:42Speaker 1: You know.
- 1:36:42Speaker 4: I'm like, yeah, a little formal acting like training or anything.
- 1:36:47Speaker 2: No, not at all.
- 1:36:49Speaker 4: That's what's amazing, really good. Oh.
- 1:36:52Speaker 1: I appreciate that, you know, I get to kind of
- 1:36:54Speaker 1: play a cowboy and be a little bit of myself.
- 1:36:57Speaker 4: Yeah, I appreciate it. It's that Roles got some complexity
- 1:37:01Speaker 4: to it. It's not just a cowboy. It's like you've
- 1:37:03Speaker 4: got some complicated scenes, you know, some emotional scenes, some
- 1:37:08Speaker 4: deep scenes, and you're really good man.
- 1:37:10Speaker 1: Thank you.
- 1:37:10Speaker 4: It's impressive.
- 1:37:11Speaker 1: I appreciate that.
- 1:37:13Speaker 2: I enjoyed it.
- 1:37:14Speaker 1: You know, I hadn't done much acting at all, and
- 1:37:17Speaker 1: I got to give a lot of credit to the
- 1:37:18Speaker 1: actors that are on the show too. You know that
- 1:37:20Speaker 1: those folks that have really studied it and paid their
- 1:37:24Speaker 1: dues learning that craft. You know, they really create the environment,
- 1:37:28Speaker 1: you know, especially for me not knowing much about it,
- 1:37:31Speaker 1: you know, and just kind of being a part of
- 1:37:33Speaker 1: the scene. Like they're so good that they make you
- 1:37:36Speaker 1: react in a certain way. You know, they know how
- 1:37:39Speaker 1: to get it out of you.
- 1:37:40Speaker 4: Yeah, they're you know, Cole.
- 1:37:41Speaker 1: And Luke and all those folks. You know, they're like
- 1:37:44Speaker 1: they know how to set up the scene and they
- 1:37:46Speaker 1: know what they're doing, so they already kind of have
- 1:37:48Speaker 1: the whole thing set up. And so when I walk
- 1:37:51Speaker 1: into a scene and they say they're lying to me,
- 1:37:53Speaker 1: it's just like, oh, okay, yeah, I got to answer right,
- 1:37:56Speaker 1: Like I'm just like kind of like naturally you knowing.
- 1:38:00Speaker 4: That, you know, right right. Yeah. It's like if you
- 1:38:03Speaker 4: work with a really good actor, sometimes you forget their acting.
- 1:38:06Speaker 4: You're like, oh, like, oh yeah, we're acting like you see,
- 1:38:09Speaker 4: like this is really happening.
- 1:38:11Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, yeah for me, like I thought it was
- 1:38:13Speaker 1: the moment when I thought it was really happening.
- 1:38:16Speaker 4: How long did it take before you got comfortable like
- 1:38:18Speaker 4: doing that on camera?
- 1:38:19Speaker 1: Still not really, yeah, it's still not.
- 1:38:22Speaker 4: Yeah, well you played off good.
- 1:38:24Speaker 1: Well thanks. You know. I think some of it comes
- 1:38:26Speaker 1: from the riding bulls. You know, you learn how to
- 1:38:28Speaker 1: channel that anxiety or here, and it's just like, oh, okay,
- 1:38:32Speaker 1: it's go time. Let's just like pull it together and
- 1:38:36Speaker 1: channel that.
- 1:38:36Speaker 4: You know, if you can ride a bull, I think
- 1:38:38Speaker 4: you could kind of do basically anything, man.
- 1:38:41Speaker 1: I you know, that's one thing my uncle taught me
- 1:38:44Speaker 1: when I was young.
- 1:38:44Speaker 4: You know.
- 1:38:45Speaker 1: He was really quick to be like, man, it doesn't
- 1:38:47Speaker 1: matter how strong you are. You know, it's not about it.
- 1:38:50Speaker 1: It's all mental. It's all in your mind, and it's
- 1:38:52Speaker 1: all uh, it's not I think I can, it's I
- 1:38:56Speaker 1: know I can and I will, you know. And he goes,
- 1:38:59Speaker 1: if you don't, if you don't believe that every time
- 1:39:01Speaker 1: you go put your rope on one of those on
- 1:39:03Speaker 1: their backs, He's like, it ain't gonna happen. Yeah, he says,
- 1:39:07Speaker 1: you said, you don't. It's not being cocky. It's just
- 1:39:09Speaker 1: being confident, you know, and believing in yourself and and
- 1:39:13Speaker 1: having that that power of mind over matter.
- 1:39:16Speaker 4: You know. Yeah, if you could do that, acting is easy.
- 1:39:19Speaker 1: And take that into anything in life. Yeah, and I did.
- 1:39:22Speaker 1: I definitely have moments where you know, I'm like, Okay,
- 1:39:27Speaker 1: take a deep breath, let's go, time, let's go.
- 1:39:30Speaker 4: You know, especially having more than a decade of doing
- 1:39:34Speaker 4: that with bulls like that that's so uncontrollable, Like it
- 1:39:40Speaker 4: is like you're at the mercy of fate and how
- 1:39:44Speaker 4: this plays out and you have this enormous beast, and
- 1:39:48Speaker 4: you've chosen to scare the ship out of yourself.
- 1:39:51Speaker 1: On top of this, you chosen to join the dance.
- 1:39:55Speaker 4: If you can do that, If you can do that
- 1:39:57Speaker 4: and be successful with that, I kind of think you
- 1:39:59Speaker 4: can do anything. I think that. I mean, I wouldn't
- 1:40:02Speaker 4: want my kid to do it at ten, but fuck,
- 1:40:04Speaker 4: it's probably if they could survive, pretty valuable.
- 1:40:08Speaker 1: I really picked two of the easiest professions, riding bulls
- 1:40:12Speaker 1: and playing music, right.
- 1:40:14Speaker 4: To have the least about of success ratio impossible tasks. Well,
- 1:40:21Speaker 4: did you ever get any serious injuries? Uh?
- 1:40:24Speaker 1: You know, I was fortunate, like not serious. Heiously did.
- 1:40:29Speaker 1: There was one of divorce.
- 1:40:30Speaker 4: Ever.
- 1:40:30Speaker 1: I got knocked all these teeth out and I got
- 1:40:32Speaker 1: jerked down one night in Weatherford and took my lip
- 1:40:35Speaker 1: off and my teeth went through down here and these
- 1:40:38Speaker 1: are all fake up here, and then my lip was
- 1:40:41Speaker 1: just hanging right through what was what? It didn't knock
- 1:40:43Speaker 1: me out, which was wild though. I got on this
- 1:40:46Speaker 1: bull and I remember it was in Weatherford, Texas, and uh,
- 1:40:50Speaker 1: it's got a Butler arena there, and he had this
- 1:40:55Speaker 1: little anglish bull there didn't have horns. I'm a little
- 1:40:57Speaker 1: muley and I usually can go up to the guys
- 1:41:00Speaker 1: it owned the bulls, and a lot of the bulls
- 1:41:01Speaker 1: have patterns, you know that they that they'll do over
- 1:41:04Speaker 1: and over, you know, So you can kind of talk
- 1:41:05Speaker 1: to the stock contractor the guys that own and be like, hey,
- 1:41:07Speaker 1: you know, what's this bull that genuinely do And he's like, ah,
- 1:41:10Speaker 1: most time they'll take two jumps out and they spin
- 1:41:13Speaker 1: to the left, or they take two young and they
- 1:41:14Speaker 1: go to the right, or oh, they just you know,
- 1:41:16Speaker 1: they'll jump, kick around and make a circle. And he goes, Man,
- 1:41:20Speaker 1: he goes, I don't know. He's like the last two
- 1:41:21Speaker 1: times I bucked, he's never he hadn't been ridden. He
- 1:41:23Speaker 1: usually jumps out there and just spins right in the gate.
- 1:41:26Speaker 1: And he said, nobody's really ridden him past three or
- 1:41:28Speaker 1: four seconds. So he goes, I don't know what he's
- 1:41:29Speaker 1: going to do after that, and sure enough, that's what happened.
- 1:41:33Speaker 1: I got on him and he jumped out and just
- 1:41:37Speaker 1: got it on right there in the gate, just spin
- 1:41:39Speaker 1: right there, and I rode him through it like three
- 1:41:40Speaker 1: or four rounds. And after I rode him, like I
- 1:41:43Speaker 1: think the bully didn't know what to do next. He
- 1:41:45Speaker 1: got a little frustrated, and he just stopped and just
- 1:41:48Speaker 1: stopped dead still and just blowing and just you know,
- 1:41:51Speaker 1: just mad. And uh, you never really want to jump
- 1:41:55Speaker 1: off of them when they're still like that, because you
- 1:41:57Speaker 1: just you'll fall right beside.
- 1:41:58Speaker 4: Him, you know.
- 1:41:59Speaker 1: So you want him to have a little momentum so
- 1:42:01Speaker 1: when you you know you're checking out, they can you
- 1:42:03Speaker 1: can get away from him, right And so I spurred
- 1:42:06Speaker 1: him a little bit to get him to jump, so
- 1:42:08Speaker 1: when he jumped, I could jump off. But when I
- 1:42:11Speaker 1: spurred him, it just jumped off straight up off the
- 1:42:13Speaker 1: ground like a cat off all fours. And when he
- 1:42:16Speaker 1: came crack and when he jumped up like that, I
- 1:42:19Speaker 1: you know, kind of ropped me back on back like that.
- 1:42:21Speaker 1: My hand's still tight in the rope. And then when
- 1:42:24Speaker 1: he came down, he just brought all that jerked me
- 1:42:26Speaker 1: down with the forest and I came forward and he
- 1:42:28Speaker 1: threw his head back and I just head budded him.
- 1:42:30Speaker 1: Oh and when he did, and then in my hand
- 1:42:34Speaker 1: was still caught in the rope. And then he took off,
- 1:42:36Speaker 1: run around, just drugged me around and just stomped the
- 1:42:39Speaker 1: crap out of me, you know, for a bit and
- 1:42:42Speaker 1: I finally got loose, and uh, I remember running over
- 1:42:45Speaker 1: to the fence and I just you know, kind of
- 1:42:47Speaker 1: had my arms on the fence and I could see
- 1:42:49Speaker 1: all the blood just kind of pouring down all over me.
- 1:42:51Speaker 1: And one of the bullfighters ran up and he looks
- 1:42:54Speaker 1: at me and goes, oh, buddy, He's.
- 1:42:58Speaker 4: Like, whoo, so they have to stitch your lip lip back.
- 1:43:02Speaker 1: On, yeah, you know, and the shock was just I
- 1:43:05Speaker 1: didn't feel anything like I was just like in shock.
- 1:43:07Speaker 1: And I was like, oh man, you know I remember
- 1:43:09Speaker 1: like my girlfriend was there from high school and my
- 1:43:11Speaker 1: buddy and we drove to the little you know, they're
- 1:43:15Speaker 1: like once you call him. This was like, ah, I
- 1:43:16Speaker 1: don't have health insurance and call no ambulance and got
- 1:43:21Speaker 1: my buddy's car and we drove her over to the
- 1:43:23Speaker 1: emergency room and Weatherford and not going in the nurse
- 1:43:27Speaker 1: she's just like, oh man, she's like, we can't do
- 1:43:28Speaker 1: anything for you here. You're gonna have to go to
- 1:43:30Speaker 1: like Dallas to like trauma. You know, you have to
- 1:43:33Speaker 1: get like an oral surgeon to put you back together.
- 1:43:36Speaker 1: And uh, she goes, you want me to, you know,
- 1:43:39Speaker 1: get you an ambulance there and I was like, no,
- 1:43:41Speaker 1: I think we can make it.
- 1:43:42Speaker 4: You know.
- 1:43:42Speaker 1: She's like, she gave me some pain pills. She goes,
- 1:43:45Speaker 1: don't take these now, she goes, hold on these, and
- 1:43:47Speaker 1: then when you get to Dallas, then take them because
- 1:43:50Speaker 1: you're probably gonna have to wait, you know, before they
- 1:43:52Speaker 1: can because it's three or four in the morning, before
- 1:43:55Speaker 1: they can get somebody in there to see us. And uh,
- 1:43:57Speaker 1: sure enough, if we got to Dallas and I'm just
- 1:43:59Speaker 1: sitting there and to wait room and I had a
- 1:44:01Speaker 1: rag and I was just holding my mouth together and
- 1:44:05Speaker 1: the shak war off man, and then it's you know,
- 1:44:08Speaker 1: I was starting to feel it. Took those pain meds
- 1:44:11Speaker 1: and then doctor came in and held me back and
- 1:44:14Speaker 1: gave me a big shot in the roof of my
- 1:44:16Speaker 1: mouth try to numb everything. And just I think it
- 1:44:19Speaker 1: took them longer to clean it all up, you know,
- 1:44:21Speaker 1: pull all the hair and dirt out of there, and
- 1:44:23Speaker 1: sewed me up and tea. Oh it was an ord deal,
- 1:44:26Speaker 1: you know for sure for months after that, you know,
- 1:44:29Speaker 1: getting the dental work done, all that crap.
- 1:44:32Speaker 4: So how was the lip hanging off?
- 1:44:35Speaker 2: It bit it all?
- 1:44:37Speaker 1: It would have came all the way off. It was
- 1:44:39Speaker 1: just hanging on right here by side, so it was just.
- 1:44:40Speaker 4: Hanging down and so they just had to stitch the
- 1:44:43Speaker 4: lower part of the upper part and put it all together.
- 1:44:45Speaker 1: Yeah, just right through the middle and kind of if
- 1:44:48Speaker 1: I shave, I got a big scar that kind of
- 1:44:49Speaker 1: goes down there. And then they went through down here,
- 1:44:53Speaker 1: so I got some stitches down there, and then most
- 1:44:55Speaker 1: of the stitches were all in my my gums and all.
- 1:44:58Speaker 4: Of that, so they had to put like posts and
- 1:45:00Speaker 4: plants and all that stuff. Wow. Yeah, that shit takes forever. Huh.
- 1:45:04Speaker 1: I kind of knocked the front four out and then
- 1:45:06Speaker 1: it just dominated the rest of them.
- 1:45:11Speaker 4: Riding bulls with no health insurance is wild. That's crazy, man,
- 1:45:17Speaker 4: that's crazy. Yeah.
- 1:45:21Speaker 1: It was just life back then for me, you know.
- 1:45:23Speaker 1: And I think going into the music stuff was like,
- 1:45:28Speaker 1: I don't know, I just wasn't really scared about it
- 1:45:30Speaker 1: or even the expectations of making it or I mean
- 1:45:32Speaker 1: to me, at the time, I had a truck and
- 1:45:35Speaker 1: a camper on it, and I was like, man, I
- 1:45:37Speaker 1: was like, I got no bills, I got no responsibilities.
- 1:45:40Speaker 1: I'm just like, go make a hundred bucks a night
- 1:45:42Speaker 1: playing music in a bar. I was like this is
- 1:45:44Speaker 1: the dream, you know. I'm like, I made it.
- 1:45:47Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:45:49Speaker 4: Well, I think when you've done something super super difficult,
- 1:45:52Speaker 4: everything else seems easier. And if you've done what you
- 1:45:56Speaker 4: did with riding bulls for that long, like the music
- 1:46:00Speaker 4: businesses like that's the worst that could happen.
- 1:46:02Speaker 1: Yeah, even the travel part. Yeah, Like you know, in
- 1:46:05Speaker 1: the early days of playing, when I really decided I
- 1:46:08Speaker 1: was going to try to make a run and play,
- 1:46:10Speaker 1: you know, and it was like, oh what we got
- 1:46:12Speaker 1: to get in the van and go drive around and
- 1:46:15Speaker 1: playing bars. You know. I was like, we've been doing
- 1:46:17Speaker 1: that rodeo and for years, you know, he's sleeping the
- 1:46:19Speaker 1: back of the truck or whatever. And it was fun
- 1:46:21Speaker 1: for us.
- 1:46:22Speaker 4: We loved it.
- 1:46:23Speaker 1: Yeah. So the idea of like starving on the road,
- 1:46:26Speaker 1: playing in a band playing music, I was like, let's go.
- 1:46:32Speaker 2: And getting a guaranteed paycheck every night.
- 1:46:35Speaker 4: You know, right, the gratitude you must have.
- 1:46:37Speaker 2: The writing bulls.
- 1:46:38Speaker 1: I mean at the time, you know, you walked away
- 1:46:39Speaker 1: with nothing, right, you know, a busted lip, nothing, you know.
- 1:46:44Speaker 4: Yeah, and no health insurance as your life and there's
- 1:46:48Speaker 4: not a bunch of people that love you.
- 1:46:50Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:46:51Speaker 4: Yeah, Well it's a great bass to start out from,
- 1:46:55Speaker 4: you know, I mean it sounds like it's almost like
- 1:46:59Speaker 4: the universe engineered this path for you to go down,
- 1:47:02Speaker 4: like if you wanted to pick a path that would
- 1:47:05Speaker 4: bring you to where you are right now. It is
- 1:47:07Speaker 4: the perfect set of circumstances.
- 1:47:10Speaker 1: I look at it all the time, you know, just
- 1:47:13Speaker 1: from an outside perspective, I guess, and just like, wow,
- 1:47:16Speaker 1: how in the world all this come together? And just
- 1:47:19Speaker 1: a lot of luck and perseverance or whatever not. I
- 1:47:23Speaker 1: would say I haven't worked hard at it, you know,
- 1:47:25Speaker 1: I feel like I have and all that, But there
- 1:47:27Speaker 1: are a lot of luck out there and a lot
- 1:47:29Speaker 1: of good people too. Yeah, a lot of good people
- 1:47:31Speaker 1: helped me out along the way and gave me gas
- 1:47:34Speaker 1: money and gave me a place of sleep or place
- 1:47:36Speaker 1: to eat, and helped us get other gigs and other
- 1:47:39Speaker 1: I mean, I remember going from one town to the
- 1:47:41Speaker 1: next and not having gas money to get to the
- 1:47:44Speaker 1: next and having no plan other than like, let's.
- 1:47:47Speaker 2: Just head west or head east.
- 1:47:49Speaker 1: And you know, he'd go play at a bar and
- 1:47:51Speaker 1: sure enough there'd be somebody there that were they like,
- 1:47:54Speaker 1: oh man, I should come back to my house. We'll
- 1:47:55Speaker 1: have bonfire and play some songs and he's like, Oh,
- 1:47:58Speaker 1: my brother's got a bar and Phoenix, and it's like
- 1:48:01Speaker 1: call them on your way out. You know, we'd go
- 1:48:03Speaker 1: there and we'd always like chop firewood or wash dishes
- 1:48:06Speaker 1: or wouldn't know your lawn or wash your car on
- 1:48:08Speaker 1: the way too, like to get gas money and keep
- 1:48:10Speaker 1: on going. You know. Wow. So I was just kind
- 1:48:14Speaker 1: of always I feel like I learned earlier. If you
- 1:48:17Speaker 1: were willing to help yourself, you know, there's people would
- 1:48:19Speaker 1: help you all day long.
- 1:48:20Speaker 4: I think luck is a factor, but it's only a
- 1:48:26Speaker 4: factor if you've already had all those other experiences. I
- 1:48:30Speaker 4: think about it, if you hadn't ridden bulls, you hadn't
- 1:48:33Speaker 4: gone through all the ranching, all the hard labor, all
- 1:48:35Speaker 4: the different things, then like you probably wouldn't have capitalized
- 1:48:40Speaker 4: on that luck the same way.
- 1:48:42Speaker 1: No, not at all.
- 1:48:43Speaker 4: Your character wouldn't be the same. No, you know, it's
- 1:48:46Speaker 4: like part of who you are is the character that
- 1:48:50Speaker 4: you've developed from what you've done.
- 1:48:52Speaker 1: It kind of conditioned me to do it in a
- 1:48:54Speaker 1: big way.
- 1:48:55Speaker 4: And it seems like it's your life. It almost like
- 1:48:57Speaker 4: it's engineered for this to happen the way it happened,
- 1:49:00Speaker 4: which kind of crazy.
- 1:49:01Speaker 1: It's been cool, man.
- 1:49:02Speaker 4: I feel very story book, you know, very like movie.
- 1:49:08Speaker 4: Like a plot in a movie, guy who's a cowboy
- 1:49:11Speaker 4: bull rider starts singing songs. People are like, hey, you
- 1:49:14Speaker 4: should probably do this for a living. And then someone's like, hey, man,
- 1:49:17Speaker 4: you should be on TV. You know. The next thing,
- 1:49:20Speaker 4: you know, you're one of the biggest hits in the world.
- 1:49:23Speaker 1: I feel like that's that song. Yeah, one day they're
- 1:49:25Speaker 1: gonna put.
- 1:49:25Speaker 4: Me in the movie.
- 1:49:26Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:49:27Speaker 1: Yeah, I was like, how about live in this thing
- 1:49:30Speaker 1: right now?
- 1:49:30Speaker 4: You know.
- 1:49:31Speaker 1: It's like, I know, I meet people all the time.
- 1:49:32Speaker 1: They're like, you know, they can't really believe where I'm
- 1:49:38Speaker 1: from or whatever. They just think it's some like made
- 1:49:40Speaker 1: up story.
- 1:49:41Speaker 2: I'm like, yeah, all right, man.
- 1:49:44Speaker 4: You know, well it seems like a story that someone
- 1:49:46Speaker 4: would make up if they wanted to pretend to be
- 1:49:48Speaker 4: a cowboy.
- 1:49:48Speaker 1: Yeah. Well, I think a lot of people have I
- 1:49:50Speaker 1: bet right, I bet yeah, A lot of people still do.
- 1:49:54Speaker 4: Yeah, isn't that funny? That's funny. That's like stolen valor almost. Yeah.
- 1:50:00Speaker 1: You know, like you all kinds of stuff, you know,
- 1:50:03Speaker 1: professions or whatever. You know, people pretend to be the
- 1:50:05Speaker 1: Oh yeah, what it is? Do you might if I
- 1:50:08Speaker 1: went to the restroom.
- 1:50:09Speaker 4: Oh no, no, no, no, not at all. I totally understand.
- 1:50:11Speaker 1: I want to keep talking about I don't want to stop.
- 1:50:14Speaker 4: Let's pause, take a leak. We'll be right back, folks.
- 1:50:17Speaker 4: We're back. Yeah. It's it's kind of funny that people
- 1:50:21Speaker 4: would want to fake the life that you've lived. But
- 1:50:24Speaker 4: that is such a romantic story, Like it's such a
- 1:50:28Speaker 4: it's such a movie that it makes sense that people
- 1:50:31Speaker 4: want to fake it. It's gotta be weird walking around,
- 1:50:34Speaker 4: like having lived a life that people would want to
- 1:50:37Speaker 4: fake and pretend that they lived.
- 1:50:40Speaker 1: It is it is sometimes, you know, and it's like,
- 1:50:44Speaker 1: you know, I remember when I really started for you know,
- 1:50:47Speaker 1: playing music and stuff. I've worked cowboy hat all the time.
- 1:50:50Speaker 1: Is that's what I wrote, bulls and you know, it's
- 1:50:53Speaker 1: my very much my identity. You know, No cowboys stuff
- 1:50:57Speaker 1: wasn't really cool then, you know. I like to feel
- 1:50:59Speaker 1: like in the early two thousands and all of that,
- 1:51:02Speaker 1: you know, and there wasn't a lot of big there
- 1:51:03Speaker 1: wasn't a big Americana scene or you know, any of
- 1:51:07Speaker 1: that kind of stuff, you know, and definitely going to
- 1:51:10Speaker 1: New York or going to Los Angeles and touring around
- 1:51:13Speaker 1: like I'd be the only one riding a cowboy hat,
- 1:51:16Speaker 1: you know. I remember, I think the first time, one
- 1:51:20Speaker 1: time I was in LA we were out on the
- 1:51:22Speaker 1: Cinamonical Pier and there was a guy that had like
- 1:51:26Speaker 1: the one man band thing, you know, out there and
- 1:51:28Speaker 1: there's all these tourists on the pier and I'm just
- 1:51:30Speaker 1: like out there checking out the scenery and just minding
- 1:51:32Speaker 1: my own business. And this guy gets on the microphone
- 1:51:35Speaker 1: and he just points over at me and goes, oh,
- 1:51:37Speaker 1: broke by Mountain, And everybody on the pier turn around
- 1:51:42Speaker 1: and looked at me, and they're just pointing me and
- 1:51:44Speaker 1: laughing at me, and.
- 1:51:44Speaker 2: I'm just like, ah, okay.
- 1:51:46Speaker 5: You know.
- 1:51:47Speaker 2: So I was like that was the association with the
- 1:51:48Speaker 2: cowboy hat at the time.
- 1:51:50Speaker 4: That's hilous. Yeah, they changed Cowboys.
- 1:51:53Speaker 2: While now that's a whole new bowl.
- 1:51:57Speaker 4: Game that that legend.
- 1:52:03Speaker 1: But you know, now playing and man, I'm so stoked
- 1:52:06Speaker 1: to see all these new bands out there and like
- 1:52:09Speaker 1: so many young folks playing actual instruments.
- 1:52:11Speaker 4: You know.
- 1:52:11Speaker 1: I felt like for a long time there was so
- 1:52:13Speaker 1: electronic and DJs and all that stuff.
- 1:52:16Speaker 4: You know, well, there's a giant country comeback that's going
- 1:52:19Speaker 4: on right now kind of nationwide. I'm sure you love
- 1:52:22Speaker 4: Open the Gates is Zach Bryn song. Yeah, that's such
- 1:52:25Speaker 4: a great bull riding song.
- 1:52:27Speaker 1: Man. They got some great tunes, man.
- 1:52:28Speaker 4: Yeah, that's a great bull riding song. But there's there's
- 1:52:33Speaker 4: so many great musicians out there now and also have
- 1:52:35Speaker 4: lived like different but very like Charlie Crockett, Yeah, fascinating, dude.
- 1:52:41Speaker 4: That guy is like just kind of performing on the
- 1:52:44Speaker 4: streets and yeah, you know, just being kind of a
- 1:52:48Speaker 4: vagabond traveling around and then finally catches and people are like, damn,
- 1:52:52Speaker 4: this music is fucking great man.
- 1:52:55Speaker 1: Yeah, like wearing it on their sleeves, you know. And
- 1:52:57Speaker 1: I didn't having the confidence to not. I think people
- 1:53:00Speaker 1: have always been. I think there has been plenty of
- 1:53:02Speaker 1: folks out there, you know, writing from the heart and
- 1:53:05Speaker 1: so to speak and all that, and you know, having
- 1:53:08Speaker 1: a certain integrity to the things that they're saying and
- 1:53:11Speaker 1: wanted you know, the truth in there speaking into their
- 1:53:14Speaker 1: songs and things like that. And yeah, there's just there's
- 1:53:17Speaker 1: a lot more of a platform to support them, you know,
- 1:53:19Speaker 1: and like people like, oh wow, there's a there's a
- 1:53:22Speaker 1: bunch of this stuff out.
- 1:53:23Speaker 4: There, and there's also an appreciation for it because I
- 1:53:26Speaker 4: think we're all fearful that people like you won't exist
- 1:53:30Speaker 4: in the future because it seems like a guy like you,
- 1:53:34Speaker 4: you know, bull riding, living on a ranch, like the
- 1:53:37Speaker 4: singing songs and bars like that almost is like a
- 1:53:40Speaker 4: thing of the past.
- 1:53:41Speaker 1: Oh very much.
- 1:53:42Speaker 4: But it's so romantic to people that, like, when we
- 1:53:46Speaker 4: meet a guy like you in real life, you're like, oh,
- 1:53:48Speaker 4: keep him around, you know, like you want to make
- 1:53:51Speaker 4: sure that people like you still exist, because it's a
- 1:53:54Speaker 4: very exciting thing for people to have a person who's
- 1:53:58Speaker 4: lived an authentically interesting life and authentically out of the
- 1:54:03Speaker 4: box life. It's not a normal life, like you're if
- 1:54:07Speaker 4: you meet a million people, the odds of you meeting
- 1:54:11Speaker 4: one guy who used to bull ride and then started
- 1:54:14Speaker 4: singing in bars with his friends and was happy living
- 1:54:17Speaker 4: on the road, and now all of a sudden he's
- 1:54:18Speaker 4: on a fucking gigantic television show. It's not even one
- 1:54:23Speaker 4: in a million.
- 1:54:24Speaker 1: It's pretty it's strange, sick, because sometimes I, you know,
- 1:54:27Speaker 1: I meet people and like, you know, like, oh, yeah,
- 1:54:30Speaker 1: I grew up just like you, you know, and then I realized, like,
- 1:54:33Speaker 1: I don't think I did. I kind of have to
- 1:54:38Speaker 1: think about it myself.
- 1:54:40Speaker 4: No, you definitely didn't. You wrote a bull when you
- 1:54:42Speaker 4: were fucking ten, dude. Okay, most people when they're ten,
- 1:54:44Speaker 4: they're playing with g I Joe's. Yeah, you know, they're
- 1:54:46Speaker 4: not riding bulls. That's a very unusual setup for the
- 1:54:50Speaker 4: rest of your life, you know, if you can. I
- 1:54:52Speaker 4: think if you do some things difficult when you're really young,
- 1:54:55Speaker 4: you get accustomed to fear, You get accustomed to anxiety
- 1:54:59Speaker 4: and nerves. And the thing that I mean that that
- 1:55:04Speaker 4: is like the mark of a man. Like a man
- 1:55:07Speaker 4: is his ability to be in a very high stress
- 1:55:10Speaker 4: situation and keep a shit together, you know, and to
- 1:55:13Speaker 4: have gone through a lot of that when you're very young,
- 1:55:16Speaker 4: Like riding a bullet ten is crazy. To gone through
- 1:55:20Speaker 4: that when you're very young, it just develops the kind
- 1:55:23Speaker 4: of character that allows you to kind of do anything
- 1:55:25Speaker 4: in life. And I think most men see that and
- 1:55:30Speaker 4: they wish they were like that.
- 1:55:32Speaker 1: I remember a moment, you know, it was really when
- 1:55:35Speaker 1: I was, you know, riding steers, and then I made
- 1:55:38Speaker 1: that transition to the big bulls, you know, and it
- 1:55:41Speaker 1: wasn't like, oh, here's just like this little steer and
- 1:55:43Speaker 1: then there's an in between and then there's the big
- 1:55:45Speaker 1: It was like this little steer and then this big bull.
- 1:55:48Speaker 1: You know.
- 1:55:48Speaker 4: I went.
- 1:55:49Speaker 1: It was a junior rodeo in Odeska, Texas, and it
- 1:55:52Speaker 1: was my first year to ride junior bulls. And I
- 1:55:56Speaker 1: entered the the bull riding. My uncle was there with me,
- 1:55:59Speaker 1: and they started running the bulls up into the shoots
- 1:56:02Speaker 1: and they were big. They were like backs that wide
- 1:56:05Speaker 1: and horns sticking outside of the shoots, you know. And uh,
- 1:56:08Speaker 1: they were big, but they didn't they didn't buck that hard,
- 1:56:10Speaker 1: you know, they just kind of jump kicked down, but
- 1:56:11Speaker 1: they were still big, you know. And like I remember
- 1:56:14Speaker 1: like scared and like in tears, you know, kind of
- 1:56:17Speaker 1: I was scared, and uh, my uncle, you know, was
- 1:56:21Speaker 1: super cool about it. He wasn't like you have to
- 1:56:23Speaker 1: do this or you have to be He's like, man,
- 1:56:24Speaker 1: whatever you want to do, you don't pack it up. Well,
- 1:56:27Speaker 1: we'll get out of here right now. It's like this
- 1:56:28Speaker 1: is either for you or it's not for you, you know.
- 1:56:32Speaker 1: And I remember just him telling me, you want to
- 1:56:35Speaker 1: take like twenty thirty minutes and just kind of think
- 1:56:38Speaker 1: about it and whatever you want to do, we'll make happen,
- 1:56:40Speaker 1: you know, And I did. I kind of walked around
- 1:56:43Speaker 1: there for a bit and I just had this some
- 1:56:47Speaker 1: kind of like I knew I would regret it if
- 1:56:50Speaker 1: I didn't do it, didn't try it. You know, there
- 1:56:52Speaker 1: was something in me where like I because I slept it,
- 1:56:54Speaker 1: I dreamt.
- 1:56:55Speaker 4: About it, you know.
- 1:56:55Speaker 1: I was just I loved it, and uh, I was like, no,
- 1:56:58Speaker 1: I'm going to do this, you know. And I my
- 1:57:00Speaker 1: rope on him and had all the sport there that
- 1:57:02Speaker 1: I needed in that moment. And they opened the gate
- 1:57:05Speaker 1: and this big old high horn bully on he just
- 1:57:08Speaker 1: turned and kind of jumped out their real docile and
- 1:57:11Speaker 1: I think I rode him two or three jumps and
- 1:57:13Speaker 1: fell off and it was just like I'm the king
- 1:57:16Speaker 1: of the world.
- 1:57:17Speaker 2: Yeah, I was like, I'm a bull.
- 1:57:20Speaker 1: Rider now, you know, I'm not just the steer rider kid,
- 1:57:23Speaker 1: you know. I kind of made that level. And I
- 1:57:24Speaker 1: remember after that, I just man, I just craved it.
- 1:57:30Speaker 1: Like just the higher they jump, the faster they spend,
- 1:57:33Speaker 1: the better I like it.
- 1:57:35Speaker 4: Really. Oh just yeah, this.
- 1:57:37Speaker 1: Dirty rank just run them in there, let's go. And
- 1:57:39Speaker 1: when I was when I was little. I mean when
- 1:57:42Speaker 1: I was like fourteen or fifteen. You know, the guys
- 1:57:45Speaker 1: were starting to breed the bulls for like the PBR,
- 1:57:47Speaker 1: like they full on start these like breeding programs.
- 1:57:49Speaker 4: You know.
- 1:57:49Speaker 1: Used to you could go to a practice pan and
- 1:57:52Speaker 1: you know, be an old farmer that had two or
- 1:57:54Speaker 1: three old bulls that you could get on and practice
- 1:57:57Speaker 1: and they just jump around and just you know nothing,
- 1:58:00Speaker 1: and it was rugally gonna hurt you bad, you know.
- 1:58:02Speaker 1: And then they started breeding these young bulls. Man, you
- 1:58:04Speaker 1: go to the practice pin, there'd be ten or fifteen
- 1:58:07Speaker 1: of these like yearlins that bucked and they needed somebody
- 1:58:10Speaker 1: to get on them, you know, like test pilot. And
- 1:58:13Speaker 1: I was the test pilot. There was a guy named
- 1:58:15Speaker 1: Bradley Raspberry, I believe, kind out in brown Would. I
- 1:58:19Speaker 1: remember going to his house and I could ride. I
- 1:58:23Speaker 1: could ride. I was pretty sticky.
- 1:58:24Speaker 4: When I was.
- 1:58:25Speaker 1: I could ride a lot better when I was younger
- 1:58:26Speaker 1: than I was when I got older. You know, for
- 1:58:28Speaker 1: some reason, I just had that no fear whatever that was,
- 1:58:32Speaker 1: And I'd get on ten or fifteen a day and
- 1:58:34Speaker 1: just they just kept running them in there. Man, they'd
- 1:58:37Speaker 1: be trying to flip over in the shoot and just
- 1:58:40Speaker 1: you know, they're young green bulls that were half wild,
- 1:58:43Speaker 1: and they're just trying to figure out which ones bucked
- 1:58:45Speaker 1: and which which ones didn't. And they would, you know,
- 1:58:47Speaker 1: they'd get rid of the ones that didn't buck and
- 1:58:49Speaker 1: keep the ones that did. And man, I'd just be
- 1:58:51Speaker 1: like the wilder they got in the shoot, like the
- 1:58:55Speaker 1: more aggressive I got. Like, I just like was like, Okay,
- 1:58:58Speaker 1: that's what we're gonna do. Come on, let's go less,
- 1:59:01Speaker 1: let's do this.
- 1:59:01Speaker 4: You know, nuts, you know, Yeah, that's so crazy. Yeah,
- 1:59:08Speaker 4: that's such a crazy way to live your life. You know.
- 1:59:10Speaker 4: Wild bulls, you say wild, like the ones that are
- 1:59:13Speaker 4: out there in the wild. There's some of the most
- 1:59:15Speaker 4: dangerous animals that you could ever encounter. When they're act
- 1:59:18Speaker 4: like they call them scrub bulls. Like my buddy Adam
- 1:59:22Speaker 4: he lives in Australia or he's moving to America, but yeah,
- 1:59:25Speaker 4: when he lived in Australia, he said that they would
- 1:59:29Speaker 4: encounter these scrub bulls, which is like wild domestic bulls
- 1:59:33Speaker 4: that got out and started breeding and then they many
- 1:59:36Speaker 4: generations later, they're now completely wild.
- 1:59:39Speaker 1: They're like deer out there.
- 1:59:40Speaker 4: Yeah, and they will run after you.
- 1:59:43Speaker 1: I know these three guys from Australia that are a
- 1:59:46Speaker 1: several Australian guys that came over lived in Stephenville. A
- 1:59:48Speaker 1: lot of these cowboys have moved to Stephenville because it
- 1:59:50Speaker 1: was so central. It was kind of cowboy capital there.
- 1:59:53Speaker 1: And his name was Lance Kelly had some brothers and
- 1:59:56Speaker 1: they were from up there in North Queensland somewhere. And
- 1:59:59Speaker 1: one summer he went back to work and then when
- 2:00:01Speaker 1: he came back, he wanted he'd tell me about where
- 2:00:04Speaker 1: he was from. All the time, you know, I was young, curious.
- 2:00:07Speaker 1: I was always fascinated. Was like, wow, you're from Australia.
- 2:00:09Speaker 1: You know, I've only seen movies, you know, like what's
- 2:00:14Speaker 1: the oh guys someone No, man from Man from Snowy River, No,
- 2:00:20Speaker 1: which was anyway. But I was a fascinator with Australia
- 2:00:24Speaker 1: and him and his brothers. And so he went home
- 2:00:26Speaker 1: and he had videotaped a VHS. You know, he didn't
- 2:00:30Speaker 1: have phones back then, but it was like the old
- 2:00:31Speaker 1: camp VHS tape recorder and he'd videotape duct taped it
- 2:00:36Speaker 1: around his body while he was walking around working on
- 2:00:39Speaker 1: the ranch, and he'd have his four wheeler and they're
- 2:00:42Speaker 1: chasing these wild cattle and rounding them up. Him and
- 2:00:44Speaker 1: his brother brothers, and he would just like chase them
- 2:00:48Speaker 1: on a four wheeler as long as, you know, to
- 2:00:50Speaker 1: keep them running ntil they got so tired they couldn't
- 2:00:52Speaker 1: go anywhere. And then he had this piece of pipe
- 2:00:53Speaker 1: on there he could run up behind him and kind
- 2:00:55Speaker 1: of knock him down, and then he'd jump off and
- 2:00:57Speaker 1: tie their legs together and they would catch a bunch
- 2:00:59Speaker 1: of them like that. And then his brother would come by,
- 2:01:02Speaker 1: you know later with a truck and a wench and
- 2:01:05Speaker 1: went them up into the trailer and they would catch
- 2:01:07Speaker 1: all these wild cows like that. And to be able
- 2:01:09Speaker 1: to see that footage and stuff and have him tell
- 2:01:12Speaker 1: me how they were doing it and show them I
- 2:01:14Speaker 1: was like, Oh, that's the coolest thing in the world.
- 2:01:16Speaker 1: I want to get When can I go?
- 2:01:17Speaker 4: You know, Australia is such a crazy place, man. I
- 2:01:22Speaker 4: mean it's bigger than the United States and or the
- 2:01:26Speaker 4: size of the United States roughly, and it has less
- 2:01:29Speaker 4: people than Los Angeles.
- 2:01:30Speaker 1: And everything will kill you. Everything will kill you. Every snake,
- 2:01:34Speaker 1: every snake, crocodiles.
- 2:01:37Speaker 4: They have saltwater crocodiles and giant fucking great white sharks. Cool,
- 2:01:43Speaker 4: hardy people, man, Yeah, hardy motherfuckers come from that place.
- 2:01:47Speaker 1: I feel like I feel like Texas and a lot
- 2:01:49Speaker 1: of folks and all say you're kindred spirits.
- 2:01:51Speaker 4: Yes, yeah, I think so too. My buddy James mccamb
- 2:01:54Speaker 4: was on the podcast yesterday. He's a comic out of
- 2:01:56Speaker 4: Australia and he's from there and he time here. He
- 2:02:00Speaker 4: was living here for a while, but he had to
- 2:02:02Speaker 4: move back because he had another kid. And but now
- 2:02:05Speaker 4: he's coming back and forth and trying to figure he's
- 2:02:07Speaker 4: really talented. Yeah, he was living in Austin for a
- 2:02:10Speaker 4: couple of years and living in America for a couple
- 2:02:13Speaker 4: of years, living in Austford about a year. But you
- 2:02:15Speaker 4: know his why. He's about to have another kid and
- 2:02:18Speaker 4: they just decided to go back to Australia where she's
- 2:02:20Speaker 4: got support. But man, he fucking misses it. He was here.
- 2:02:24Speaker 4: He's like, mate, I miss it so much. I miss
- 2:02:26Speaker 4: it so much. Like I think there's there any place
- 2:02:29Speaker 4: like this place. It's pretty awesome, but Australia it's like
- 2:02:34Speaker 4: it's the same kind of thing. It's like it's a
- 2:02:36Speaker 4: rugged place and the kind of people that are that
- 2:02:38Speaker 4: live there. They're fun, they're fun, kind of got a
- 2:02:43Speaker 4: super fucked up oppressive government unfortunately.
- 2:02:46Speaker 1: I think it's a lot about what you say too.
- 2:02:47Speaker 1: You know, when you survive certain things in your life,
- 2:02:51Speaker 1: and you know, it puts things in perspective of what
- 2:02:55Speaker 1: you're taking seriously or what's a what's an emergency? Yeah, right,
- 2:03:00Speaker 1: always this this is life or death or is it not?
- 2:03:04Speaker 1: Or And to be able to laugh at stuff. Man,
- 2:03:08Speaker 1: I love the comedians. It's just like man to be
- 2:03:11Speaker 1: able to just joke and cut stuff about the most
- 2:03:14Speaker 1: serious things or whatever it is. It's like, God, we
- 2:03:16Speaker 1: need that so much.
- 2:03:17Speaker 4: Yeah, it's an important service. It doesn't seem like it
- 2:03:20Speaker 4: is to people because it seems stupid. They're like, oh,
- 2:03:22Speaker 4: you're just telling jokes. Like not for me. When I
- 2:03:25Speaker 4: go and watch a good comedy show, I feel better.
- 2:03:28Speaker 4: It's medicine. And I think it also puts life into perspective.
- 2:03:32Speaker 4: With a sense of humor, you can kind of look
- 2:03:34Speaker 4: at things through a different lens and go, yeah, we're
- 2:03:37Speaker 4: probably gonna be all right.
- 2:03:38Speaker 1: I get a feeling, like, you know, I think a
- 2:03:41Speaker 1: lot of folks have this idea that songwriters or where
- 2:03:43Speaker 1: you know, especially you know, have a bunch of sad
- 2:03:45Speaker 1: songs or whatever to go to that deep place and
- 2:03:48Speaker 1: you live through stuff that you write about. But man,
- 2:03:51Speaker 1: I find in comics, man like, I feel like there's
- 2:03:54Speaker 1: some of the heaviest stuff in the world that those
- 2:03:57Speaker 1: folks have experienced to be able to, you know, come
- 2:04:01Speaker 1: up and tell these kinds of jokes and stories and
- 2:04:04Speaker 1: the educational part of it with it. You know, it's
- 2:04:06Speaker 1: so much I don't know, for me, it seems like
- 2:04:08Speaker 1: so much more than just a joke.
- 2:04:10Speaker 4: It is with some mean, some people just do jokes.
- 2:04:13Speaker 4: It really depends on your style. But I mean, if
- 2:04:15Speaker 4: you go back to like Richard Pryor, his whole thing
- 2:04:17Speaker 4: was like explaining life and telling stories but with an
- 2:04:21Speaker 4: amazing sense of humor. And then you would leave that
- 2:04:24Speaker 4: and you like, everybody feels like more united, they feel better,
- 2:04:28Speaker 4: just like like what everybody was thinking, everybody's thinking afraid
- 2:04:33Speaker 4: to say. And also he would look at things from
- 2:04:36Speaker 4: a very wise perspective that was also hilarious. So you
- 2:04:39Speaker 4: walked out of there feeling better. Yeah, you felt like
- 2:04:42Speaker 4: you were better.
- 2:04:43Speaker 1: I felt like there's a bringing some hope.
- 2:04:46Speaker 4: Yeah, Yeah, there's hope in humor for sure, but this
- 2:04:50Speaker 4: hope in music too. You know, I don't have any
- 2:04:52Speaker 4: musical talent at all, but I always think of music
- 2:04:55Speaker 4: as almost like a drug, because music, when when a
- 2:04:59Speaker 4: good song hits, you're like fuck, like you're if you're
- 2:05:01Speaker 4: in the car and a good tune comes on, Like
- 2:05:04Speaker 4: especially back when I used to listen to the radio,
- 2:05:07Speaker 4: you know, and like you didn't expect what was coming
- 2:05:09Speaker 4: on and.
- 2:05:09Speaker 1: Also can't rewind it.
- 2:05:10Speaker 4: Yeah, all of a sudden, it's Radar Love by Golden Ear,
- 2:05:13Speaker 4: and you're like, yeah, fuck yeah, let's go. Like you
- 2:05:16Speaker 4: you feel different. It like changes your mood, Like you
- 2:05:20Speaker 4: hear like Freebird, Like you're flipping through the channels and
- 2:05:24Speaker 4: the fucking guitar solo for free Bird comes on, You're like, yes,
- 2:05:28Speaker 4: you feel better, Like it excites all these parts of
- 2:05:32Speaker 4: your senses, your consciousness, your feelings. It's it's a drug.
- 2:05:37Speaker 4: I mean, it's an amazing.
- 2:05:38Speaker 1: Thing, real therapeutic for me. At the very beginning, Like I,
- 2:05:42Speaker 1: like I said, I didn't have high expectations, but I
- 2:05:45Speaker 1: I knew and I kind of wrote some of the
- 2:05:47Speaker 1: first songs that I wrote, and I like got some
- 2:05:49Speaker 1: of that stuff off my chest. Like it changed me,
- 2:05:52Speaker 1: you know. Yeah, it like it became a tool that
- 2:05:56Speaker 1: all of a sudden, I had access to this thing
- 2:05:59Speaker 1: that like was helping me heal in a way. Like
- 2:06:02Speaker 1: I could get stuff off my chest, like the things
- 2:06:04Speaker 1: that I was uncomfortable talking about in conversation with folks,
- 2:06:09Speaker 1: Like I could put them into a song and like
- 2:06:11Speaker 1: sing them to the wall, and I was just like
- 2:06:13Speaker 1: getting that stuff out. Like there wasn't anybody in the room,
- 2:06:16Speaker 1: and I was just like, you know, but I was
- 2:06:18Speaker 1: getting this stuff out out of me, you know.
- 2:06:21Speaker 4: And it's also a way for people to hear it
- 2:06:23Speaker 4: where it's not annoying, you know what I mean. Like
- 2:06:25Speaker 4: if you just tell some sad story about your life,
- 2:06:27Speaker 4: people are like, oh.
- 2:06:28Speaker 2: Geezus, Like here you go, cry me river kid.
- 2:06:32Speaker 1: Everybody's got a story.
- 2:06:34Speaker 4: But if you have a sad story in a song,
- 2:06:37Speaker 4: it's like fucking it's kind of it's beautiful. Like I
- 2:06:40Speaker 4: love a good sad song, you know, a song that
- 2:06:43Speaker 4: has like real emotion in it, whether it's a real
- 2:06:47Speaker 4: story or whether like one of my favorite culture wall
- 2:06:50Speaker 4: songs is Kate mccannon. Yeah, Jamie turned me onto that song.
- 2:06:54Speaker 1: He sold it to me Mans Jim.
- 2:06:57Speaker 4: He was fucking twenty one when he made that song,
- 2:07:00Speaker 4: which is crazy. Yeah, listen that song. That sounds like
- 2:07:03Speaker 4: a fifty eight year old man who's been smoking cigarettes
- 2:07:06Speaker 4: his whole life. Yeah. And that dude is interesting too
- 2:07:10Speaker 4: because he still works on a ranch. Yeah.
- 2:07:12Speaker 1: Yeah, he's a great guy. He's one of my favorites
- 2:07:15Speaker 1: of the younger guys that have come up and been
- 2:07:17Speaker 1: doing this. He's just the same way. When I first
- 2:07:20Speaker 1: heard those first songs, I was like, who the fuck
- 2:07:23Speaker 1: is this?
- 2:07:24Speaker 2: You know he saw that.
- 2:07:25Speaker 1: I saw like a picture of him. Oh man, he's
- 2:07:28Speaker 1: a kid, you know, crazy and I just fabulous.
- 2:07:32Speaker 4: Raise is wicked bird. You hear that, You're like, what
- 2:07:37Speaker 4: is this? Yeah? Who is this guy? And I couldn't
- 2:07:42Speaker 4: believe he was twenty one. I'm like, that makes zero sense.
- 2:07:45Speaker 1: Yeah, he's got it though, man. And there's a bunch
- 2:07:49Speaker 1: of them out there now that I'm hearing too. There's
- 2:07:51Speaker 1: just like I'm like, man, how cool?
- 2:07:53Speaker 4: Yeah, how cool.
- 2:07:54Speaker 1: I'm so glad that they're getting a shot at it
- 2:07:57Speaker 1: or just getting the support. I don't know if it's
- 2:07:59Speaker 1: getting a shot at it, but it's like getting the
- 2:08:01Speaker 1: love and support that they deserve for the good music.
- 2:08:04Speaker 4: Now. Yeah, it's great, great music. And there's a thing
- 2:08:07Speaker 4: now with the Internet where it's so easy to share something.
- 2:08:10Speaker 4: You know, like someone's got a good song and it's
- 2:08:12Speaker 4: on YouTube or Spotify, and then you just send a
- 2:08:15Speaker 4: link to your buddy. Yeah you go, bro, check this out.
- 2:08:17Speaker 4: Like I gotta say, like half the songs I find
- 2:08:20Speaker 4: out about my friends just send me and then all
- 2:08:23Speaker 4: of a sudden, I'm like, oh shit, yeah, and then
- 2:08:25Speaker 4: I'll add it to my playlist. And yeah. It's like
- 2:08:28Speaker 4: it's easy to share things now where you don't have
- 2:08:31Speaker 4: to go to the record store and pick up the
- 2:08:33Speaker 4: record and you know, now it's just like within seconds
- 2:08:37Speaker 4: of you getting it in your phone, you're listening to it.
- 2:08:40Speaker 1: And it's easier to record the stuff too, you know. Oh,
- 2:08:42Speaker 1: it's like you don't need a half a million bucks
- 2:08:45Speaker 1: in a studio and all that stuff. It's like, man,
- 2:08:47Speaker 1: half the stuff you can record on your phone.
- 2:08:49Speaker 4: Look at Oliver Anthony. Yeah one fucking song. Yeah, one song.
- 2:08:54Speaker 4: And the first show he ever does is like eighteen
- 2:08:58Speaker 4: thousand people. That's the first show that dude ever performed.
- 2:09:03Speaker 1: I feel for I would never have been able to
- 2:09:05Speaker 1: do that when I started, you know, like I was
- 2:09:08Speaker 1: not prepared for anything, like you know, I don't know,
- 2:09:10Speaker 1: maybe they're not, but that's a lot of He.
- 2:09:13Speaker 4: Settled in carry he settled in pretty easy. He figured
- 2:09:16Speaker 4: out he's a smart cat. Yeah, he's a really smart dude,
- 2:09:20Speaker 4: and he settled in really easy.
- 2:09:21Speaker 1: I guess they have to, you know. And I always think, like,
- 2:09:24Speaker 1: you know, gosh, it's changed so much since I started out,
- 2:09:27Speaker 1: you know. I mean we didn't even have like, you know,
- 2:09:30Speaker 1: if you wanted to learn how to play a song,
- 2:09:32Speaker 1: you kind of had to go listen to the record
- 2:09:33Speaker 1: and just try to figure it out, you know, and
- 2:09:35Speaker 1: rewind it. Now they're like, oh, here's a guy that
- 2:09:38Speaker 1: the show you ever knows.
- 2:09:39Speaker 4: A guy on YouTube that'll show you do it.
- 2:09:43Speaker 1: Yeah, and that took me years to figure out, you know,
- 2:09:45Speaker 1: And and you know, maybe that is like today. You know,
- 2:09:48Speaker 1: these guys, it's they're learning how to do it at
- 2:09:52Speaker 1: such a quicker rate, and they know how to handle
- 2:09:55Speaker 1: the crowds and do all the stuff, and it's just
- 2:09:56Speaker 1: like boom there you go.
- 2:09:58Speaker 4: Well that's with everything today, you know. I think that's
- 2:10:01Speaker 4: also why, like I mean, in martial arts, and like UFC.
- 2:10:05Speaker 4: This is the reason why the guys are so much
- 2:10:06Speaker 4: better today, and it's because they get to see everything
- 2:10:09Speaker 4: that everybody's ever done, and then they practice it and
- 2:10:12Speaker 4: improve upon it, and they get it. At your early age.
- 2:10:15Speaker 4: You can essentially just on your phone watch every fight
- 2:10:18Speaker 4: that's ever taken place ever in human history that's been recorded.
- 2:10:21Speaker 1: I did that on the road a few years ago.
- 2:10:23Speaker 1: I mean, I've still I've always been a pretty rudimentary
- 2:10:27Speaker 1: guitar player, you know. I can't solo all over the
- 2:10:29Speaker 1: place and all of that stuff. And I think it
- 2:10:33Speaker 1: was like twenty nineteen last I put out out a
- 2:10:35Speaker 1: record and I was going on a tour and my
- 2:10:37Speaker 1: friend Charlie Sexton produced album. He's a wonderful guitar player.
- 2:10:40Speaker 4: And Charlie Sexton, the guy from the from the eighties
- 2:10:44Speaker 4: Beat So Lonely.
- 2:10:45Speaker 1: Play with I remember that played Archangel.
- 2:10:48Speaker 4: He was like really young when Beat So Lonely came out, right, Man, he's.
- 2:10:52Speaker 1: Yeah legend, and I remember calling him though. I was like, man,
- 2:10:55Speaker 1: I really want to get better at the guitar, you know,
- 2:10:58Speaker 1: and he's like, well, just listen to all this stuff
- 2:11:00Speaker 1: that you really like, you know. He's like, don't try
- 2:11:02Speaker 1: to play it all note for note. He's like, I
- 2:11:03Speaker 1: just keep listening to it and like you'll start eventually
- 2:11:07Speaker 1: finding those places and develop your style. And but it
- 2:11:10Speaker 1: was when I got on the road as well. Man,
- 2:11:12Speaker 1: I had access on YouTube, right all of my favorite
- 2:11:16Speaker 1: musicians and guitar players, and I just kind of made
- 2:11:18Speaker 1: a point of sitting down and I haven't found this
- 2:11:20Speaker 1: guy that was just breaking down and giving simple blues
- 2:11:23Speaker 1: guitars lessons for kids. And I was like, man, this
- 2:11:26Speaker 1: is great. Never done anything like this, and just like
- 2:11:28Speaker 1: went through I went back, you know, I got to
- 2:11:31Speaker 1: memorize all the notes on the front board and I
- 2:11:33Speaker 1: need to, you know, And it was just it was
- 2:11:34Speaker 1: so I had so much fun doing it, and uh,
- 2:11:37Speaker 1: you know, and I also give confidence to get up
- 2:11:39Speaker 1: and jam with other musicians and play and kind of
- 2:11:42Speaker 1: know what key you're in, what you're doing, and uh
- 2:11:45Speaker 1: uh you know, I went years, you know, without having
- 2:11:47Speaker 1: any kind of lessons or training and then I'm just like,
- 2:11:50Speaker 1: within three weeks of being on tour and watching YouTube
- 2:11:54Speaker 1: videos of it, just stepped it up so.
- 2:11:55Speaker 2: Much, Like how'd you learn how to do it?
- 2:11:58Speaker 1: I just about twenty years later in my career, I
- 2:12:00Speaker 1: decided to learn how to play the guitar.
- 2:12:03Speaker 4: It is amazing. I mean, that's the positive part of
- 2:12:06Speaker 4: the Internet. If you can avoid the negative parts. There's
- 2:12:09Speaker 4: a lot of great positive stuff in the Internet, and
- 2:12:11Speaker 4: the access to stuff like that is amazing.
- 2:12:14Speaker 1: All avoid the negative of everything, right right.
- 2:12:17Speaker 4: Well, Unfortunately, there's a lot of people that don't have
- 2:12:21Speaker 4: good lives, and they do have a lot of extra
- 2:12:23Speaker 4: time because they're not really investing in their own life,
- 2:12:25Speaker 4: so they just spread in negativity online and it's just
- 2:12:29Speaker 4: human nature.
- 2:12:30Speaker 1: What wild world it is.
- 2:12:33Speaker 4: It's a wild world, but it's also a wildly positive
- 2:12:35Speaker 4: world too. Just what you just said about the guitar
- 2:12:37Speaker 4: stuff or with the Oliver Anthony stuff. This guy standing
- 2:12:42Speaker 4: there with a guitar in front of a field with
- 2:12:45Speaker 4: no production value at all, but has a song they
- 2:12:48Speaker 4: singing from the heart. Like, how many views does that
- 2:12:51Speaker 4: shit have on YouTube? It's got to be like one
- 2:12:56Speaker 4: hundred million views or something nuts, And that's almost fucking gigantic. Yeah,
- 2:13:01Speaker 4: Richmond North.
- 2:13:03Speaker 1: I remember my wife's playing it for me for the
- 2:13:05Speaker 1: first time and I was just like what.
- 2:13:07Speaker 4: I was like, what is that?
- 2:13:08Speaker 1: And she's like, oh, man, checked this out and know.
- 2:13:09Speaker 1: I was like, that's so fucking rad.
- 2:13:12Speaker 4: Yeah. I got a chance to see him perform live
- 2:13:14Speaker 4: too with his band. They're fucking fantastic. And he settled.
- 2:13:17Speaker 4: He's completely settled into being famous now. He's he's full,
- 2:13:20Speaker 4: he's cool with it. Yeah, he's still the same dude.
- 2:13:23Speaker 4: I met him real early on and I actually talked
- 2:13:26Speaker 4: to him on the phone. How was a guy at
- 2:13:29Speaker 4: thirty six million? Holy shit?
- 2:13:34Speaker 5: Wow?
- 2:13:35Speaker 1: When you say like he's settled, it was he. I
- 2:13:37Speaker 1: didn't know it was. He having a hard time with it.
- 2:13:38Speaker 4: He was freaking out at the beginning. And I contacted
- 2:13:41Speaker 4: him early on and he said, Hey, can I ask
- 2:13:44Speaker 4: you some advice? And we talked on the phone. I
- 2:13:46Speaker 4: said yeah, sure. So I called him up and he
- 2:13:49Speaker 4: was just telling me that he was getting hit up
- 2:13:50Speaker 4: by all these different people that were trying to give
- 2:13:52Speaker 4: him money to sign a contract and this. Then I go, hey, hey, hey,
- 2:13:55Speaker 4: don't sign nothing. I go, you don't need nobody, You
- 2:13:59Speaker 4: don't need to be locked up in any contracts with nobody.
- 2:14:02Speaker 4: And he was like, they're all telling me I got
- 2:14:03Speaker 4: to strike while the iron hot. I'm like, fuck them,
- 2:14:06Speaker 4: I go, you got talent, dude, talent is the number
- 2:14:09Speaker 4: one thing you already have that You're gonna be fine.
- 2:14:13Speaker 4: You just keep making songs like that. You can't fucking lose.
- 2:14:16Speaker 4: But what you don't want to do is be tied
- 2:14:19Speaker 4: with some legal contract to some assholes just sucking you
- 2:14:22Speaker 4: like a vampire and they're gonna be stuck with you
- 2:14:25Speaker 4: for years and then you're gonna have to go to
- 2:14:27Speaker 4: court and get out exactly.
- 2:14:29Speaker 1: Yeah, whatever, you have the opportunity, like you said, you
- 2:14:32Speaker 1: just man, you're writing good songs, you're doing good stuff,
- 2:14:34Speaker 1: and you have a way to give it to the people.
- 2:14:36Speaker 4: But he's gonna love you make seven million dollars to
- 2:14:39Speaker 4: sign this. I'm like, don't do it. I know it
- 2:14:41Speaker 4: sounds like, but that's seven million dollars. They're giving you
- 2:14:44Speaker 4: that because they're gonna make fourteen. There's not a chance
- 2:14:47Speaker 4: in hell. You don't need them. You don't need You
- 2:14:49Speaker 4: should get all the money, you should get all. You
- 2:14:51Speaker 4: shouldn't give any money to anybody else. You don't need it.
- 2:14:54Speaker 4: You can make your own records, you can put it
- 2:14:56Speaker 4: all together yourself. You don't need nobody.
- 2:14:59Speaker 1: I guess remember the everyone buy for one, sell for
- 2:15:02Speaker 1: two somewhere exactly.
- 2:15:04Speaker 4: There's no way they're gonna give you that money unless
- 2:15:06Speaker 4: they're gonna make a lot more, and then you're gonna
- 2:15:08Speaker 4: get stuck with them. Don't do it. And he's like,
- 2:15:10Speaker 4: they're all telling me, I got to do it now
- 2:15:12Speaker 4: because I miss this opportunity. I'm like, you ain't missing ship, Yeah,
- 2:15:16Speaker 4: you ain't miss There's not a chance you're gonna miss.
- 2:15:18Speaker 1: It, especially when you're that young.
- 2:15:19Speaker 4: Yeah, and good, yeah, and just fucking good.
- 2:15:23Speaker 1: Who knows what they're gonna be, you know, be writing
- 2:15:25Speaker 1: in the next ten years.
- 2:15:26Speaker 4: Yeah, have you heard that song woman Scorned?
- 2:15:29Speaker 1: I haven't no? Is that one of his new ones?
- 2:15:31Speaker 4: Who He wrote that one after a breakup And it's
- 2:15:35Speaker 4: just whoa you hear that fucker? It just gets you
- 2:15:38Speaker 4: right in the bone. Marrow yeah, get you. Yeah, it's fantastic.
- 2:15:42Speaker 4: It's so good. But it's just like you know, it's
- 2:15:46Speaker 4: it's a beautiful story and I love a story like that.
- 2:15:48Speaker 4: And he was like selling, uh, who's selling like heavy
- 2:15:52Speaker 4: equipment like a salesman, just like fucking machinery and ship
- 2:15:57Speaker 4: and then writing songs and he gets fed up one
- 2:15:59Speaker 4: day and he puts this song, let's make a video
- 2:16:01Speaker 4: of this fucking song. Yeah, and then all of a
- 2:16:03Speaker 4: sudden boom.
- 2:16:05Speaker 1: Man. People asking all the time, they're like, man, who
- 2:16:07Speaker 1: he thinks, you know, the best young songwriter out there,
- 2:16:10Speaker 1: you know, musicianry guitar player. I'm like, man, I don't know.
- 2:16:14Speaker 1: It's probably some sixteen year old kid in the garage
- 2:16:16Speaker 1: that nobody's heard of. That's probably the best guy out there.
- 2:16:19Speaker 4: You know, he's ready to jump off.
- 2:16:20Speaker 1: Yeah, and they get you with some song that this
- 2:16:24Speaker 1: you know, crushes you.
- 2:16:25Speaker 4: Yeah, they're out there. It's just but that's the thing
- 2:16:29Speaker 4: that I was saying about guys like you, that people
- 2:16:31Speaker 4: look at guys like you and it's such a romantic story.
- 2:16:34Speaker 4: They worry that there's not going to be any more
- 2:16:37Speaker 4: of you, you know what I mean, Like this weird
- 2:16:40Speaker 4: digital world and AI and just the strange fucking life
- 2:16:47Speaker 4: that we're all living like now that are not I
- 2:16:50Speaker 4: want want to say simple, because it's not simple, but
- 2:16:52Speaker 4: it's unencumbered by all the bullshit of the world that
- 2:16:57Speaker 4: we think is fake and unfortunate, like to have this
- 2:17:01Speaker 4: pure life and this wild romantic story. When people meet
- 2:17:05Speaker 4: a guy like you, they're like, oh, man, there probably
- 2:17:07Speaker 4: ain't gonna be many more of them.
- 2:17:09Speaker 1: I don't know, man, look at this guy. You guys
- 2:17:12Speaker 1: that are kind I feel so fortunate too. Like when
- 2:17:16Speaker 1: I did come to Austin, like am uh you know,
- 2:17:19Speaker 1: mid twenties, you know, I met guys like Joe E.
- 2:17:21Speaker 1: Lee and Terry Allen and uh guy Clark and like
- 2:17:26Speaker 1: these Steve Earl legendary kind of guys that I looked
- 2:17:29Speaker 1: up to and I remember being young men and me
- 2:17:31Speaker 1: I'm like, oh man, you know, these these are the
- 2:17:33Speaker 1: guy last guys left, you know, And so you know,
- 2:17:38Speaker 1: I don't know, there's so many of these young folks
- 2:17:40Speaker 1: out there. They're doing that I think, uh, crave it
- 2:17:44Speaker 1: and they're that's what they're interested. And they don't want
- 2:17:46Speaker 1: to play that music, you know, they want to feel
- 2:17:49Speaker 1: that stuff. So I'm optimistic about it, but I can.
- 2:17:53Speaker 1: I can definitely is a different world out there these days.
- 2:17:57Speaker 1: And you know, even for myself, you know, just going
- 2:18:00Speaker 1: with the flow and like, well, where are we going tomorrow?
- 2:18:02Speaker 1: You know?
- 2:18:02Speaker 4: How is this?
- 2:18:03Speaker 1: Like I have no idea how so much of this
- 2:18:05Speaker 1: social media stuff is working or what you know, and
- 2:18:08Speaker 1: how you put out an album or songs, and it's like,
- 2:18:12Speaker 1: don't worry about all that jazz. Just like just keep writing,
- 2:18:15Speaker 1: just keep writing, keep making it, and just at the
- 2:18:20Speaker 1: end of the day, if all of that stuff disappears,
- 2:18:22Speaker 1: like you know, you can always go sit on the
- 2:18:26Speaker 1: sidewalk and put your tip jar out there and play
- 2:18:28Speaker 1: a song for people who are walking down the street.
- 2:18:30Speaker 1: And I guarantee you there's gonna be somebody's gonna stop
- 2:18:32Speaker 1: appreciate it. You know.
- 2:18:34Speaker 4: Well that's got Charlie Crockett started.
- 2:18:36Speaker 1: Yeah, I had plenty of gigs where like, you know,
- 2:18:38Speaker 1: you go into some bar and you know what my
- 2:18:41Speaker 1: wife always says, go where you're celebrated, not where you're tolerated.
- 2:18:44Speaker 1: You go into some bar and they kind of you
- 2:18:47Speaker 1: can tell they don't really want you know, they're not
- 2:18:49Speaker 1: excited about you playing or whatever. Like yeah, ship, I'll
- 2:18:51Speaker 1: just go I'll go parking the parking lot across the
- 2:18:54Speaker 1: street and sit on the tailgate of my truck and play.
- 2:18:55Speaker 1: We'll have a party over there.
- 2:18:56Speaker 4: You know. That is the crazy thing music. Yeah, you
- 2:19:01Speaker 4: could just kind of set up anywhere.
- 2:19:02Speaker 1: You don't need all that stuff like talking about sign
- 2:19:05Speaker 1: contracts and deals and it's like, man, just like you
- 2:19:08Speaker 1: got the guitar in your hand, you got your song,
- 2:19:11Speaker 1: you know, hold on to it, yeah, and protected. You know,
- 2:19:14Speaker 1: that's what's It's something that's that's special to you. I
- 2:19:18Speaker 1: think when I talk about the therapy of songwritingers, so
- 2:19:21Speaker 1: that's what's I hold on and protect that ruthlessly. You know,
- 2:19:25Speaker 1: I'm not just giving that away, you know. And it's
- 2:19:28Speaker 1: more that part of it's way more important than selling
- 2:19:32Speaker 1: an album or a concert ticket or going on the
- 2:19:36Speaker 1: road touring and all that.
- 2:19:38Speaker 4: Man.
- 2:19:38Speaker 1: Like, what I get out of music is like when
- 2:19:40Speaker 1: I'm sitting at home in a room all by myself
- 2:19:43Speaker 1: and letting that stuff pour out of me and I'm
- 2:19:45Speaker 1: just just singing it to the wall, Like that's what's
- 2:19:49Speaker 1: a saved my life.
- 2:19:50Speaker 4: You know, that's awesome.
- 2:19:51Speaker 1: It ain't any of the rest of it.
- 2:19:53Speaker 4: I'm glad that you articulate it that way too, because
- 2:19:55Speaker 4: I think there's young aspiring songwriters and singers out there
- 2:20:00Speaker 4: that are listening to this right now, that are feeling
- 2:20:02Speaker 4: this and they just can't wait to get to a
- 2:20:04Speaker 4: pad right now and start writing, get picked up their
- 2:20:06Speaker 4: guitar and start writing. Because it's like stories like yours
- 2:20:09Speaker 4: and the way you express it, it inspires people to
- 2:20:13Speaker 4: get excited about it inspires people to really dig in.
- 2:20:18Speaker 1: I hope. So you know, I definitely had folks that
- 2:20:21Speaker 1: mentored me like that and you know, steered me in
- 2:20:24Speaker 1: the right direction in a lot of ways. Terry out
- 2:20:27Speaker 1: on the guy, definitely, I'm just like, man, just keep writing,
- 2:20:30Speaker 1: keep you know, and whatever it, whatever that's making you
- 2:20:34Speaker 1: want to do that in the first place, you know,
- 2:20:36Speaker 1: like that, like hold on to that, you know, and
- 2:20:38Speaker 1: protect it, and the rest will all be always be
- 2:20:40Speaker 1: around and will always come, and it will change, and
- 2:20:43Speaker 1: a good song will survive and find its way, just
- 2:20:47Speaker 1: like the guy. You know that song you just played me,
- 2:20:50Speaker 1: Like you said, two hundred million people in it. Just
- 2:20:53Speaker 1: they'll they'll find its way, you know, yeah, find it,
- 2:20:55Speaker 1: They'll find it, find its way into people's hearts.
- 2:20:58Speaker 4: Yeah. Like I said, it's just it's important for people
- 2:21:02Speaker 4: like you to tell your story. It really is. Thank you,
- 2:21:05Speaker 4: It's it's fuel for people.
- 2:21:07Speaker 1: Thanks.
- 2:21:08Speaker 4: Thank you for being here. I really appreciate it. It
- 2:21:10Speaker 4: was a lot of fun. I really enjoyed it. Uh,
- 2:21:13Speaker 4: And tell everybody they want to find you performing anywhere
- 2:21:16Speaker 4: where they can catch you.
- 2:21:17Speaker 1: Is it?
- 2:21:17Speaker 4: You got a website that shows where you're gonna be out.
- 2:21:19Speaker 1: Of there, all over the interwebs. Yeah, it's all out there.
- 2:21:22Speaker 4: Is it. Do you have your own personal website? I do.
- 2:21:25Speaker 1: It's probably just Ryan Bingham dot com or the beingam
- 2:21:29Speaker 1: music dot com something like that.
- 2:21:31Speaker 4: All the dates are up there.
- 2:21:33Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:21:33Speaker 4: Do you use social media at all?
- 2:21:35Speaker 1: Yeah, we're on all this.
- 2:21:37Speaker 4: I mean, do you pay attention to it or you
- 2:21:38Speaker 4: got somebody who does it for you?
- 2:21:39Speaker 1: Both?
- 2:21:40Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 2:21:40Speaker 1: You both? Yeah, like mostly like on Instagram. I pay
- 2:21:43Speaker 1: attention to that one, you know, and check in and
- 2:21:45Speaker 1: stuff like that. There's so much of it these days.
- 2:21:47Speaker 1: It's like I can't keep up.
- 2:21:48Speaker 4: Yeah, I know, it'll rob your time.
- 2:21:52Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm trying. I'm trying to go get away where
- 2:21:55Speaker 1: all that stuffs turned off. That's where I will find
- 2:21:57Speaker 1: me beautiful.
- 2:21:58Speaker 4: All right, thanks brother, appreciate it's a lot of fun.
- 2:22:01Speaker 4: Thank you, Bye, buddy,
