- 0:02Speaker 1: Hello, and welcome to radioi's Children's Story Hour. As a reminder,
- 0:08Speaker 1: RADIOI is a reading service intended for people who are
- 0:11Speaker 1: blind or have other disabilities that make it difficult to
- 0:15Speaker 1: read printed material. Today we will be reading from several
- 0:19Speaker 1: books about summertime. Your reader today is Patty. We'll going
- 0:26Speaker 1: to start with a book called Hooray for Summer. The
- 0:32Speaker 1: author of this book is Kazuo Iwamura. The book was
- 0:39Speaker 1: first published in Japan in nineteen eighty six by the
- 0:45Speaker 1: Shiko Shaw Company, and then it was published in the
- 0:49Speaker 1: United States by North South Books in twenty ten. About
- 0:56Speaker 1: the author, she Kazuo Iwamura was born in Tokyo in
- 1:02Speaker 1: nineteen thirty nine. He is one of the most famous
- 1:05Speaker 1: picture book artists in Japan. His work has won many awards.
- 1:11Speaker 1: He lives in Takiji, where he founded the Museum for
- 1:16Speaker 1: Picture Book Illustrations. It stands on a hill named e
- 1:22Speaker 1: ehon no Oka, which means picture book Hill. So now
- 1:27Speaker 1: let's read together Hooray for Summer. One summer afternoon, Mick,
- 1:37Speaker 1: Mack and Mollie were playing in the field. It's too hot,
- 1:44Speaker 1: croaked a tired frog in a patch of shade. Even
- 1:49Speaker 1: the grass and the flowers in the field did not move.
- 1:53Speaker 1: Everything was still everything that is, but the little squirrel
- 1:59Speaker 1: children and Mick, Mac and Mollie. They were hopping around
- 2:04Speaker 1: as usual. The illustrations here show the little frog trying
- 2:11Speaker 1: to stay cool in the shade, and the three squirrel
- 2:16Speaker 1: children Mick, Mac and Molly. Of course, these aren't your
- 2:21Speaker 1: typical woodland squirrels. These squirrels are wearing clothes just like
- 2:26Speaker 1: regular children would wear, and they're playing on a stick
- 2:31Speaker 1: on the ground. Suddenly a flock of birds was flying away.
- 2:38Speaker 1: Go home, the little squirrels, one cried, The rain will
- 2:43Speaker 1: start soon. Wonderful croak to the frog, it will be
- 2:49Speaker 1: nice and cool. Then, oh no, we'd better go home.
- 2:54Speaker 1: Mick told his brother and sister. Let's run back to
- 2:58Speaker 1: the woods. But before they had even reached the trees,
- 3:04Speaker 1: it started to rain. Blip PLoP, blip PLoP, Down came
- 3:10Speaker 1: the big drops. Swish grasses stirred in the rain. Hurry,
- 3:16Speaker 1: said Mick. They ran as fast as they could. The
- 3:20Speaker 1: illustration here shows the three little squirrel children running as
- 3:25Speaker 1: fast as they can through the field of grasses, and
- 3:29Speaker 1: the rain is pouring down on top of their little heads.
- 3:35Speaker 1: The rain fell harder and harder. At the edge of
- 3:39Speaker 1: the woods, Mick found a small cave. In here, he
- 3:45Speaker 1: shouted to the others, Oh, said Mick, there's someone already here.
- 3:52Speaker 1: At the end of the cave sat two little mice,
- 3:57Speaker 1: a brother and a sister. Are you hiding from the
- 4:01Speaker 1: rain here too, Mick asked, yes, said the mouse boy timidly.
- 4:08Speaker 1: The illustration here shows the three little squirrel children in
- 4:13Speaker 1: the little cave, and way back in the corner are
- 4:16Speaker 1: the two little mouse children. And there they look like
- 4:22Speaker 1: they might be a little bit afraid. I'm so wet,
- 4:28Speaker 1: cried a rabbit. Can I come in? Come on, hurry up,
- 4:33Speaker 1: Mac shouted harder and harder. The rain came down with
- 4:38Speaker 1: a roar. Outside, branches waved, and leaves danced. Thunder rumbled
- 4:45Speaker 1: louder and louder, closer and closer. The illustration here shows
- 4:52Speaker 1: the three squirrel children and the rabbit and the two
- 4:56Speaker 1: little mice all in this little, tiny cave. And the
- 5:02Speaker 1: rabbit is so wet he's wringing the water out of
- 5:06Speaker 1: his shirt. Crack, boom, lightning flashed right outside the cave. Oh,
- 5:16Speaker 1: no help, everyone trembled with fear. Mommy, the little mouse
- 5:24Speaker 1: girl gave a little shriek. Here the illustration shows a
- 5:29Speaker 1: very dark sky and the grasses and trees blowing in
- 5:34Speaker 1: the wind, and lightning racing across the darkened sky. At last,
- 5:42Speaker 1: the rain stopped, the sky grew brighter. The storm is over,
- 5:48Speaker 1: said Molly. Outside the cave, rain dripped off the trees
- 5:55Speaker 1: and grasses. A tear dripped from the little mouse girls
- 6:00Speaker 1: eye too. The illustration here shows all the little animals
- 6:06Speaker 1: peeking out the door of the cave and seeing that
- 6:09Speaker 1: the sunshine is finally coming out. Let's go play on
- 6:15Speaker 1: the seesaw together, Mick shouted. There was a cool breeze
- 6:20Speaker 1: in the field. Now rain drops sparkled on the flowers.
- 6:25Speaker 1: All sorts of little animals came out of hiding. The
- 6:29Speaker 1: earth smelled clean. The illustration here shows the all the
- 6:36Speaker 1: little animals running through the grass and down in the grass.
- 6:41Speaker 1: There's a snail crawling around, and some lady bugs. Some
- 6:46Speaker 1: butterflies are up flying around on some near some flowers,
- 6:51Speaker 1: and several birds are flying through the sky. We are
- 6:58Speaker 1: the summer storm, friends, said Mick. Hooray for new friends,
- 7:04Speaker 1: shouted Mac. Hooray for summer storms, shouted Mollie, hooray for summer,
- 7:11Speaker 1: shouted everyone, and they all played together in the field
- 7:16Speaker 1: until the zircadas told them it was time to go
- 7:20Speaker 1: home for supper. And now I'm going to share another
- 7:25Speaker 1: book with you. This one's called The Summer Nick Taught
- 7:31Speaker 1: His Cats to Read. This book was written by Curtis Many,
- 7:38Speaker 1: illustrated by Kate Berube. It was published by PAULA. Wiseman Books,
- 7:45Speaker 1: a division of Simon and Schuster Books for young readers
- 7:50Speaker 1: in the year twenty sixteen. From the inside front cover,
- 7:56Speaker 1: Nick has two cats, Vern and Stevenson. They do everything
- 8:04Speaker 1: together except read. So Nick has an idea he will
- 8:12Speaker 1: teach them to read too. But reading can be hard
- 8:16Speaker 1: and takes lots of practice. Can his cats learn to
- 8:22Speaker 1: In this celebration of reading, Nick and his cats discover
- 8:28Speaker 1: that finding just the right book can make all the difference.
- 8:34Speaker 1: So let's begin The Summer Nick Taught his Cats to Read.
- 8:42Speaker 1: Nick had two cats, Vern and Stevenson. They spent summers
- 8:51Speaker 1: doing everything together. The illustration here shows the young boy
- 8:57Speaker 1: named Nick with his two cats, Vern and Stevenson. They're
- 9:05Speaker 1: jumping into a little wading pool. They're camping out in
- 9:10Speaker 1: a tent under the stars, and Nick is even riding
- 9:14Speaker 1: a bicycle that has a basket in the front for
- 9:18Speaker 1: one cat and a basket in the back for the other. Continuing,
- 9:25Speaker 1: but when Nick sat down with a book, the cats
- 9:29Speaker 1: had their own ideas. So the illustration here shows Nick
- 9:35Speaker 1: sitting on the couch holding a book, but one of
- 9:39Speaker 1: the cats is laying right on top of the book
- 9:42Speaker 1: so Nick cannot read it, and the other one is
- 9:45Speaker 1: sitting on top of a pile of books on the
- 9:48Speaker 1: floor and the cat is licking his paws. So let's see.
- 9:56Speaker 1: Nick decided to teach them to read. He started with
- 10:01Speaker 1: easy words, ball said Nick, b A l L, but
- 10:10Speaker 1: the cats just wanted to play. See the illustration here
- 10:15Speaker 1: shows Nick and he's made a flash card with the
- 10:19Speaker 1: word ball b A LL written on the card and
- 10:24Speaker 1: he's trying to get the cats to look at it,
- 10:26Speaker 1: but all they want to do was play with their
- 10:29Speaker 1: cat toys. At lunchtime, Nick pointed at the word food,
- 10:39Speaker 1: but doesn't look like in this illustration that the cats
- 10:42Speaker 1: are paying any attention. All they want to do is
- 10:45Speaker 1: eat their lunch. They're not looking at the flash card
- 10:48Speaker 1: that Nick has made that says food. Wake up said
- 10:54Speaker 1: Nick after they fell asleep. This is no time for
- 11:00Speaker 1: a nap in a p His cats did not like
- 11:06Speaker 1: that at all. The illustration here shows Nick holding another
- 11:11Speaker 1: flash card. This one says nap, but both of the
- 11:16Speaker 1: cats are just sleeping on their big pink pillow. So
- 11:24Speaker 1: Nick made new flash cards and Vern got interested, but
- 11:32Speaker 1: not Stevenson. Stevenson just said we're and crawled under the bed. Now.
- 11:40Speaker 1: The illustration here shows Nick sitting on the floor and
- 11:44Speaker 1: he has crayons and paper and he's made new flash cards.
- 11:50Speaker 1: One of the flash cards he's cut into the shape
- 11:53Speaker 1: of a fish, and he's written the word fish fish
- 12:00Speaker 1: on the card. And Vern is actually looking at the
- 12:06Speaker 1: flash card and has picked it up in his little Paul,
- 12:11Speaker 1: but not Stevenson. He's crawled under the bed. Nick tried
- 12:17Speaker 1: nursery rhymes next, when he read Three Little Kittens. Vern
- 12:24Speaker 1: searched everywhere for the mittens, but not Stevens. Then Nick
- 12:32Speaker 1: read his favorite books to Vern, who liked stories about
- 12:37Speaker 1: cats and stories about fish. Ern loved fish. He followed
- 12:45Speaker 1: along as Nick read, learning the sounds of the letters.
- 12:51Speaker 1: The illustration here shows Nick holding his picture book about fish,
- 12:58Speaker 1: and the cat named Vern is sitting on his lap
- 13:02Speaker 1: and his little paws are pointing to the fish. Vern
- 13:08Speaker 1: practiced on his own over and over even after Nick
- 13:13Speaker 1: went to bed. Soon he was reading new stories all
- 13:17Speaker 1: by himself, and it shows this little yellow cat reading
- 13:23Speaker 1: two Fish, four Fish, and twenty Leagues under the Sea,
- 13:28Speaker 1: and several other books about fish. The next morning, Nick
- 13:34Speaker 1: tried once more, f I s h see fish. Ern
- 13:42Speaker 1: loves that word, don't you. But Stevenson said wow and
- 13:49Speaker 1: ran under the porch. He hissed as Nick and burn.
- 13:57Speaker 1: Vern got his own library card and borrowed some many
- 14:00Speaker 1: books that Nick could hardly carry them home. The illustration
- 14:06Speaker 1: here shows Nick carrying a large stack of books and
- 14:12Speaker 1: Vern has its little library card in his mouth. He's
- 14:15Speaker 1: walking along beside Nick. When they discovered a story they
- 14:21Speaker 1: both liked, they acted out their favorite scenes. They dug
- 14:26Speaker 1: up fish fossils in the flower bed. They bounced across
- 14:31Speaker 1: the surface of the moon. It was fun, but it
- 14:34Speaker 1: would have been more fun with Stevenson. The illustration here
- 14:40Speaker 1: shows Stevenson once again just curled up, not paying any
- 14:46Speaker 1: attention to what the fun that Vern and Nick were having.
- 14:55Speaker 1: Then Vern discovered treasure under the bed, a great stack
- 15:02Speaker 1: of Stevenson's pirate drawings. Wow, Nick whispered, Stevenson drew a story.
- 15:12Speaker 1: We should write the words, said Nick, and Vern helped.
- 15:19Speaker 1: The illustration here shows lots of pictures that the cat
- 15:25Speaker 1: named Stevenson has drawn, and they all show pictures of
- 15:30Speaker 1: boats and pirates and treasure Max. And then it shows
- 15:35Speaker 1: in the corner a picture of Nick writing the words
- 15:40Speaker 1: to a story, along the side the pictures that Stevenson
- 15:45Speaker 1: has drawn. When they were done, they squeezed under the porch,
- 15:52Speaker 1: gave Stevenson an eyepatch and read the Tale of One
- 15:57Speaker 1: Eyed Stevenson and the Pirate Goal. Stevenson listened and followed along.
- 16:05Speaker 1: He didn't run away or hiss, not even once. So
- 16:12Speaker 1: Nick and Vern took him to the library to find
- 16:16Speaker 1: more books. Here's an illustration of Nick standing in front
- 16:21Speaker 1: of the bookshelves at the library and he's looking at
- 16:25Speaker 1: the books, and on the shelf it says pirates A
- 16:30Speaker 1: to Z and there are lots and lots of books
- 16:34Speaker 1: about pirates. There and Vernon Stevenson are right there with him.
- 16:41Speaker 1: The next morning, when Nick woke up, Stevenson already had
- 16:46Speaker 1: his whiskers in a book. When Vern and Nick needed
- 16:53Speaker 1: help fighting pirates. Stevenson found a sword too welcome aboard mate,
- 17:00Speaker 1: Nick yelled step Lively. Nick and Vern rounded up two
- 17:07Speaker 1: scurvy mutineers, and Stephen Stevenson held them at bay. The
- 17:14Speaker 1: illustration here shows Nick and his two cats, Vern and
- 17:18Speaker 1: Stevenson dressed up like pirates. Stevenson has an eyepatche on
- 17:23Speaker 1: and Vern has a pirate hat on, and Stevenson is
- 17:29Speaker 1: sitting on top of two little toys, and those must
- 17:33Speaker 1: be the two mutineers. Then Nick and Vern climbed the
- 17:41Speaker 1: mast and looked out over Treasure Island. When Nick yelled
- 17:46Speaker 1: land ho, Stevenson was right there with them. They all
- 17:52Speaker 1: hurried down and waited ashore, and it was Stevenson who
- 17:56Speaker 1: found the buried treasure. The illustration here shows the three
- 18:01Speaker 1: of them out in the backyard and Nick is up
- 18:05Speaker 1: on top of a picnic table that has an umbrella
- 18:08Speaker 1: over it, and that was what he was pretending was
- 18:12Speaker 1: the mast of the boat. And then we see Verne
- 18:18Speaker 1: who's playing in the waiting pool like that was the ocean,
- 18:24Speaker 1: and Stevenson, who is over in the garden digging up
- 18:29Speaker 1: a carrot, and he's pretending that that was the buried treasure.
- 18:36Speaker 1: Now Nick and his cats hunt for dinosaurs in the
- 18:41Speaker 1: lost world behind the garden. They race around the yard.
- 18:46Speaker 1: In eighty seconds, they journey to the center of the basement.
- 18:53Speaker 1: Here the illustration shows three scenes where Nick and his
- 18:59Speaker 1: cats are out in the backyard looking for dinosaurs. Then
- 19:04Speaker 1: Nick is on his bike and both of his cats
- 19:09Speaker 1: are back in the baskets racing through the neighborhood. And
- 19:13Speaker 1: now they're down in the basement near the laundry room,
- 19:18Speaker 1: and they're in the laundry basket pretending that it's a boat.
- 19:26Speaker 1: Sometimes Vern and Stevenson curl up with their own books,
- 19:31Speaker 1: and sometimes Nick reads to them while they close their
- 19:35Speaker 1: eyes and purr. But Nick also likes it when someone
- 19:41Speaker 1: reads to him. Here the illustration shows Nick sitting with
- 19:47Speaker 1: his father, and the father is reading a book out
- 19:52Speaker 1: loud to Nick. But there's Vern and Stevenson curled up
- 19:56Speaker 1: right beside them. Maybe I sh to teach you how
- 20:01Speaker 1: to speak, he says to his cats. How hard could
- 20:05Speaker 1: that be? Meow, says Stevenson. So that's the story of
- 20:14Speaker 1: the summer Nick taught his cats to read. And now
- 20:21Speaker 1: we'll read another book. This one is called Now it
- 20:25Speaker 1: is summer. The author is Eileen Spinelli. The illustrator is
- 20:31Speaker 1: Mary Newell de Palma. It was published by Erdman's Books
- 20:37Speaker 1: for Young Readers in twenty eleven. From the inside front cover,
- 20:44Speaker 1: as a young mouse eagerly looks forward to everything that
- 20:49Speaker 1: autumn will bring friends at school, fallen leaves to play
- 20:54Speaker 1: in pumpkins to carve. His mother gently encourages him to
- 21:00Speaker 1: join in all the summery joys that surround him right now,
- 21:05Speaker 1: dancing fireflies, sunny beaches, and peaches fresh from the orchard. Now,
- 21:14Speaker 1: let's read. Now it is summer. Will it be autumn soon?
- 21:22Speaker 1: Will a leafy breeze waken me by ruffling the curtains
- 21:26Speaker 1: at my window? Will it dapple the air with apply
- 21:30Speaker 1: scent soon? The illustration here shows a large mouse family.
- 21:38Speaker 1: The mother mouse and let's see one, two, three, four, five,
- 21:42Speaker 1: six little mice children, and they're outside playing. One's on
- 21:47Speaker 1: a skateboard, one is throwing a frisbee, one is jumping rope.
- 21:55Speaker 1: But one little mouse it does look like he's not
- 22:00Speaker 1: too happy, and he's waving a fan across his face,
- 22:05Speaker 1: talking to his mother. Yes, it will be autumn soon enough,
- 22:12Speaker 1: But now it is summer Now the sun is lemony bright,
- 22:18Speaker 1: and the air is spattered sweet with grass cuttings. Take
- 22:24Speaker 1: a deep breath. But will it be autumn soon? Will
- 22:30Speaker 1: there be warm cinnamon muffins on my breakfast plate, muffins
- 22:35Speaker 1: I help bake soon? Yes, it will be autumn soon enough.
- 22:43Speaker 1: But now it is summer. Now there are fresh peaches
- 22:48Speaker 1: on your plate. Remember we found them yesterday at old
- 22:53Speaker 1: country orchard. Aren't they tasty? The illustration here shows the
- 23:00Speaker 1: house family gathered around some large fresh peaches, and all
- 23:05Speaker 1: of them are eating the peaches while they sit on
- 23:08Speaker 1: the ground with their mother. Will it be autumn soon?
- 23:14Speaker 1: Will we make my Halloween costume? I think I'd like
- 23:18Speaker 1: to be Moppy Lion this year, or floppy Scarecrow. Yes,
- 23:25Speaker 1: autumn will come and we will make a lions suit
- 23:29Speaker 1: or scarecrow overalls. But now it is summer. Now we
- 23:35Speaker 1: need flip flops and beech robes and ice pops from
- 23:39Speaker 1: the freezer. Which flavor would you like? Here's the illustration
- 23:46Speaker 1: with all the little mice children in their mousehole and
- 23:50Speaker 1: the mother reaching into the freezer to get ice pops
- 23:54Speaker 1: out for all of them. Will it be all soon?
- 24:01Speaker 1: Will the yellow school bus toot on its route to
- 24:05Speaker 1: our house, with all my friends waving at me. Soon. Yes,
- 24:13Speaker 1: the yellow bus will beep beep beep down our street
- 24:17Speaker 1: in autumn. But now it is summer. Now the faerry
- 24:24Speaker 1: is waiting. We'll cross the bay with your cousins for
- 24:28Speaker 1: a picnic. You can carry the red checkered tablecloth. Hurry,
- 24:33Speaker 1: the ferry is leaving. Here the little mouse faerry is
- 24:37Speaker 1: climbing a rope to get onto the ferry boat. And
- 24:40Speaker 1: there's the little mouse boy carrying the red checkered tablecloth.
- 24:47Speaker 1: Will it be autumn soon? Well? I leap laughing into
- 24:52Speaker 1: leaves heaped high in the backyard. Soon. Yes, autumn will come.
- 25:01Speaker 1: But now it is summer. Now you can tippytoe into
- 25:06Speaker 1: the gurgling surf, happy splashing. But will it be autumn soon? Well?
- 25:15Speaker 1: I get to choose my pumpkin from the farmer's patch.
- 25:19Speaker 1: Will I carve a smiling jack lantern soon? Here the
- 25:25Speaker 1: illustration shows the mouse family at the beach, and all
- 25:29Speaker 1: the little mouse children are having fun in the sand.
- 25:34Speaker 1: But the little mouse boy who's been asking the question,
- 25:38Speaker 1: has made a jack lantern out of the sand. Yes,
- 25:46Speaker 1: said the mother, it will be autumn and your Jack
- 25:50Speaker 1: o' lantern will grin and glow. But now it is summer.
- 25:56Speaker 1: There are soap bubbles to blow, and a beach ball
- 25:59Speaker 1: to bounce across the sand. Catch it before it bounces
- 26:03Speaker 1: into the ocean. Will it be autumn soon? Will we
- 26:09Speaker 1: toast marshmallows around a cozy fire and tell shivery stories
- 26:14Speaker 1: long past bedtime? Soon? Yes, there will be stories and
- 26:22Speaker 1: autumn treats by the fire soon. The illustration here shows
- 26:29Speaker 1: that little mouse boy who's been asking that question over
- 26:32Speaker 1: and over, sitting in the mousehole while the mother mouse
- 26:36Speaker 1: is squeezing a lemon. But now it is summer. Now
- 26:43Speaker 1: there is cold lemonade and Grandpa reading aloud on the
- 26:48Speaker 1: porch your favorite book. Will it be autumn soon? Will
- 26:56Speaker 1: the moon rise plump and orange and high a spidery
- 27:00Speaker 1: black sky? Soon? Yes, there will be. There will be
- 27:07Speaker 1: autumny orange mood. But now it is summer. Now night
- 27:13Speaker 1: comes late, and the moonlight is thin as lace, with
- 27:16Speaker 1: tiny stars surrounding it. Make a wish? Will it be
- 27:23Speaker 1: autumn soon? Will it? Yes, dear child, Soon enough it
- 27:32Speaker 1: will be autumn. But now it is summer. Take my hand,
- 27:39Speaker 1: let's go barefoot down the stairs. And out into the
- 27:44Speaker 1: shimmery summery night. The fireflies are dancing. Let's join them,
- 27:50Speaker 1: you and me together, joyful now, right now. And the
- 27:58Speaker 1: illustration here shows the mother mouse and the little boy
- 28:02Speaker 1: mouse outside in the night sky, watching the fireflies. This
- 28:09Speaker 1: concludes the Children's Story Hour for today. Please join us
