- 0:22The following episode is intended for mature audiences.
- 0:25Please note that listener discretion is advised.
- 0:27She was a beautiful fugitive, fleeing from corruption and from power.
- 0:33He was a professional athlete past his prime, hired to find
- 0:36her, and he grew to love her.
- 0:38Love turned to obsession, obsession turned to murder, and now the price
- 0:42of freedom might be nothing less.
- 0:44She stole 50 grand from me.
- 0:49I want her back.
- 0:53I want you to find her for me.
- 0:57You got problems now, Terry.
- 0:59You want trouble too?
- 1:00Yeah!
- 1:03Not many people could handle something like this, Jessie.
- 1:06But you come from a powerful family.
- 1:11What is it you don't like exactly?
- 1:13Football players, tacos, or beer?
- 1:16I like tacos and I like beer.
- 1:18So many people must have loved you.
- 1:21Just let me take her back with me, Terry.
- 1:31Harry, he could hurt us.
- 1:32You mean he could hurt me?
- 1:34Don't think if he doesn't even things up with me, I'm not
- 1:36gonna stomp on his pretty face.
- 1:39You were in on it, Jesus.
- 1:40That's not true.
- 1:41You helped set me up.
- 1:42Get off him!
- 1:45I just found out tonight Jake jumps for you.
- 1:47You told him everything, didn't you?
- 1:48Didn't you?
- 1:51You've become everything I'm about, don't you understand that?
- 1:55Jake, I love him!
- 1:57You don't think I need to be cared for too?
- 1:58You want to gamble with me, Terry?
- 2:09This is going to be a really entertaining review of Against All Odds, starring Jeff
- 2:15Bridges, Rachel Ward, and James Woods, featuring our friends Steve and Izzy
- 2:20from Everything I Learned From Movies.
- 2:23Hey, everybody.
- 2:23Hey, I'm sorry.
- 2:25You just described the plot to The Big Lebowski, so we may
- 2:27have watched the wrong movie.
- 2:29An unemployed Jeff Bridges is hired by a rich white to find a family member.
- 2:34Hijinks ensue.
- 2:36Those are some nice shades you got on, Eric.
- 2:38Yeah, baby.
- 2:38It's all 80s all the time.
- 2:43Got the collar freshly popped.
- 2:44I am so happy to be back with you guys, and we have Mountain Man Dan with us,
- 2:49and we have Tanya from the drive thru, and we're gonna be talking about Against
- 2:52All Odds, a movie that you guys hadn't seen, and I hadn't seen, I don't think
- 2:57anybody had seen, and we got sucked into this because of a car chase.
- 3:01So, what better way to talk about an 80s movie than through a car chase scene?
- 3:06Absolutely.
- 3:07Yeah!
- 3:09Where do we start?
- 3:10I mean, we gotta start with the people that brought us this movie, right?
- 3:14Who are they, Steve?
- 3:15Well, it was directed by Tyler Hackford.
- 3:17Who?
- 3:18You might know him from other movies he's directed, like Bukowski.
- 3:21Oh, no, not that one, uh, an officer and a gentleman.
- 3:25Oh, all right.
- 3:26This white nights.
- 3:29And then the music videos for this Phil Collins guy.
- 3:32We might be talking about later.
- 3:33Lionel Richie, a movie called everybody's all American bound by honor.
- 3:38All right.
- 3:38Then we start getting into stuff like.
- 3:40Dolores Claiborne.
- 3:42Who?
- 3:42Yeah.
- 3:43How about The Devil's Advocate, babe?
- 3:44You ever seen that movie?
- 3:46Where are you?
- 3:48Guys, you wanna see Keanu with a Floridian accent, quote unquote?
- 3:52That's the movie.
- 3:54Oh, baby!
- 3:54Oh, baby!
- 3:56I love the Dumpster Fire movie so much.
- 3:59You know what I love about this?
- 4:00This is such a gem of a movie.
- 4:02And it comes on the heels of Jeff Bridges doing Tron.
- 4:06If you look at the IMDB for this, there's not much in between.
- 4:09And immediately after this is Starman, where he basically plays Deadpan.
- 4:14Exactly.
- 4:16So he's really showing.
- 4:17His versatility as an actor in like a three year span.
- 4:21You're able to see the dude in all of his dude dom across these movies.
- 4:26Because let's face it, Jeff Bridges is just the dude.
- 4:29We'll get to that.
- 4:30Oh, totally.
- 4:32Talk about an all star cast in this movie, too.
- 4:35Yeah, you mentioned Academy Award winner Jeff Bridges.
- 4:39Academy Award.
- 4:40I think nominee at least, uh, James Woods.
- 4:43Oh.
- 4:44As Jake Wise or Weezer, I don't know how you're supposed to say his name.
- 4:47It's said a couple different ways in this movie.
- 4:49Weiss.
- 4:50I, I have said it many times on our podcast.
- 4:52James Woods is a dumpster fire of a human being.
- 4:56He is not a good man, but that translates so beautifully on film.
- 5:00He is a joy to watch.
- 5:02Quintessential villain.
- 5:04I mean, you just look at him, but that's a bad guy.
- 5:06Period.
- 5:06Yeah.
- 5:07Yeah, even in John Carpenter's Vampires.
- 5:09Oh, dude.
- 5:10Well, so John Carpenter's Vampires, John Carpenter wanted to make a
- 5:13vampire hunter who was as cruel and vicious as the things he killed.
- 5:17And I think it worked.
- 5:18If you want to see some peak James Woods, you have to watch The Specialist.
- 5:23He is at the peak of his game.
- 5:25And then we've got Rachel Ward.
- 5:27Who?
- 5:27Yeah.
- 5:29She's pretty.
- 5:31But we also have guys like.
- 5:33Alex Karras, who played Hank Sully, right?
- 5:36Isn't he the dad from Webster?
- 5:38I think so.
- 5:39I know he's in stuff in the 80s that I never watched,
- 5:42but that sounds about right.
- 5:43I've never seen Webster, so.
- 5:44You've got Saul Rubenek, who Tanya knows from Frasier as the husband of Daphne.
- 5:49No, they didn't get married.
- 5:51Thank you very much.
- 5:52She didn't marry Donny, she left him at the altar.
- 5:55That's right, that's right.
- 5:56For others, you may know Saul Rubenek as, I forget the name, the producer's
- 6:00name in True Romance, but he's that guy.
- 6:02Like Coke Dow, definitely not Joel Silver.
- 6:04You've got Swoozie Kurtz, and one of my personal favorites, Dorian Harewood.
- 6:08Does anybody know where he's from?
- 6:10Yes!
- 6:10We just saw him in a movie.
- 6:12Oh, yeah.
- 6:13Oh my god, no.
- 6:15I just had a brain fart.
- 6:16Where was he from?
- 6:17Was it a Cameron Mitchell movie?
- 6:18Well, he was in Viper.
- 6:19As Tanya said, I know him best from the Viper TV series.
- 6:23He played the technician in the wheelchair who built the morphing
- 6:27multi vehicle Viper that was basically a replacement for Knight Rider.
- 6:31That's what you bring up.
- 6:32Not like, first thing that comes up on his IMDb is full metal
- 6:34jacket, Space Jam, Sudden Death.
- 6:37He's the guy, yeah, yeah.
- 6:39Sudden Death is Jean Claude Van Damme.
- 6:41Dare I say classic?
- 6:43Oh, it's a classic.
- 6:44Anything with Jean Claude Van Damme is instantly a classic.
- 6:48And, and Eric, I wanted to bring this up.
- 6:49One of my favorite actors is in this movie too, an actor named Ted White.
- 6:53Who's he, Steve?
- 6:54You might know him as security guard with dog in this movie.
- 6:59He's a stuntman and over 80 things starting with, he
- 7:02was gunslinger in cat blue.
- 7:04Assassin in Man From U.
- 7:06N.
- 7:06C.
- 7:06L.
- 7:06E.
- 7:06Trooper in Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry, who I'm surprised we haven't
- 7:10talked about on this show yet.
- 7:11He was Hugo Maltz in an episode of Kulchak.
- 7:14He was Nazi and Fence in two separate episodes of The Rockford Files.
- 7:18He was Frankie in Demonoid.
- 7:20It's about a devil hand, check it out.
- 7:22Goon number one in Going Ape, the timeless Danny DeVito, Tony
- 7:26Danza movie everyone loves.
- 7:28Have we done that for April yet?
- 7:29No, we have not.
- 7:30Coming soon.
- 7:32Guard number three in Tron.
- 7:34This, Grogan in Romancing the Stone, Jason Voorhees in Friday the 13th,
- 7:41The Final Chapter, I think that's the fourth one of twelve or so they've made.
- 7:45He was the deer hunter in Starmen, another Jeff Bridges one, a couple episodes
- 7:51of The Fall Guy, henchman in Magnum P.
- 7:53I., attendant in X Files, and trooper in, uh, Double take.
- 7:59Yes, the Orlando Jones, Eddie Griffin movie everybody has on Blu ray.
- 8:02And normally we would save all of this cast and credit information for the
- 8:06bottom of and everything I learned from movies and break, fix, crossover episode.
- 8:11But in this case, we need to set the stage.
- 8:13We need to get people understand the star studded cast, the amount
- 8:17of money that was thrown at this movie and how much potential it has.
- 8:22That's right.
- 8:23We just need an excuse for why the sky is so dark because all
- 8:26of the stars are in this movie.
- 8:29Before we dive into it, what are you guys drinking tonight?
- 8:31Oh my!
- 8:32Babe, you want to take this one?
- 8:33Well, we have from Sierra Nevada Brewing, Traditional Pale Ale, draft
- 8:38style, 5 percent alcohol by volume.
- 8:40Steve's going to pop his top.
- 8:42Oh, my top!
- 8:43And Oh, my top!
- 8:45Hey!
- 8:45Yeah, guys, Sierra Nevada, we love it.
- 8:48And if you've never been to the brewery, at least the one in Chico,
- 8:51is Willy Wonka and the Beer Factory.
- 8:52It's one of the most fun beer tours you will ever do.
- 8:55Oh, Bye.
- 8:55How about you guys?
- 8:56What are y'all drinking?
- 8:57I haven't popped my top yet, but you've noticed that I've the colors.
- 9:01And I'm wearing my Jones polarized, big aviator sunglasses.
- 9:07I'm wearing my Ferrari polo shirt.
- 9:10I've got my nine 11 cabriolet behind me here.
- 9:13Never forget.
- 9:14I'm trying to immerse myself in the world of against all odds.
- 9:17And just like this movie, I went on a wild goose chase looking for tab.
- 9:23And I settled instead.
- 9:24On San Pellegrino.
- 9:27Ooooo!
- 9:29This movie screams white people doing white people things.
- 9:32Set in LA, in the hills of Malibu, and Santa Monica.
- 9:37And it just goes from there.
- 9:39There's not enough Yacht Rock.
- 9:40I agree.
- 9:43The one thing you're saying, Eric, when it came to the cast, I'd be curious
- 9:46to know the budget because like the movies from 1984, actors weren't paid
- 9:50near as much then as they are now.
- 9:51I don't imagine.
- 9:52So couldn't have been that people cost for this movie.
- 9:56I'm a big Jeff Bridges fan, like people know Tron is like one of
- 10:00my top five movies of all time.
- 10:02But it doesn't even have cars.
- 10:04It's got motorcycles though.
- 10:05Yeah, it's got the little light cycles.
- 10:06They're light cycles, yeah.
- 10:08It's a close tie between 89 Batman with Michael Keaton and Tron.
- 10:11I mean, they're like fighting for first, right?
- 10:13I can see that.
- 10:14Jeff Bridges in this movie is 35 years old.
- 10:16He's been acting literally since he was in diapers in 1949.
- 10:20And so he's probably the most overpaid person on this movie, but he didn't
- 10:25really gain his popularity until the 80s.
- 10:27And obviously he became a superstar with the big Lebowski and he's kind of
- 10:31stamped himself in eternity that way.
- 10:33Wait, was that the one that made him a superstar?
- 10:36I think culturally a superstar, like he's a pop icon, right?
- 10:40He's that pop culture reference after the big Lebowski, like
- 10:43everybody knows him for that.
- 10:44Despite everything he did up until that point, he had an entire career
- 10:48when Rachel Ward was still trying to get off the blocks with hers, right?
- 10:52And so the dynamic of people in this movie is really interesting.
- 10:56And there is a hidden gem here, which we'll talk about in the, what
- 10:59did we learn part of this episode that I discovered along the way.
- 11:04But I think we need to really peel back the onion here and talk about
- 11:08what could have been a really, really good movie and what we ended up with.
- 11:13Nice.
- 11:13Well, I, I guess before that mountain man, Dan, not to be confused with
- 11:16mountain Mike, which I've been calling you the past couple of times.
- 11:18Um, what do you think the budget for this movie was?
- 11:22I can't imagine it was too much.
- 11:24Any guesses out there?
- 11:25125, 000, 25, 000 dollars, right?
- 11:30I'm going to guess this is like a, Multi million dollar movie.
- 11:34More than 2 million, I'll give you that.
- 11:37No, it's uh, 13 million.
- 11:38Even like with inflation stuff, kind of a mid range, probably be like a
- 11:42Netflix movie nowadays, you know?
- 11:44Well, let's face it, that Porsche and that Ferrari were new at that
- 11:48time and they were not cheap.
- 11:50Yeah.
- 11:50So there went most of the budget.
- 11:51There you go.
- 11:52And that was a new 308.
- 11:53That wasn't some borrowed leftover for Magnum PI either.
- 11:57That was a 308 QV that came out in 84, 85 time range.
- 12:01That's like the end of the line for that car.
- 12:03So they spent a pretty penny.
- 12:05I think those things were going in 1980s dollars in the high thirties,
- 12:09low 40, 000 for one of those.
- 12:11And then all the stunts that they probably needed paid for.
- 12:1413 of them to get through the chase scene, which again, we'll
- 12:16talk about as we go along.
- 12:17So I can see it racking up a pretty penny.
- 12:20Still for 1984, that's a lot of money.
- 12:22It's a quality film.
- 12:23And Steve and Izzy are going to take us through it.
- 12:26Oh, are we?
- 12:26Oh, okay.
- 12:26Oh, are we?
- 12:27Oh, it's all right.
- 12:29All right.
- 12:29Get ready for us to do a tap takeover.
- 12:33All right, guys.
- 12:34We'll, we'll start off.
- 12:35In Cozumel.
- 12:37Cozumel, Mexico, baby.
- 12:38We get a nice little POV shot of basically Jeff Bridges doing his best
- 12:42T 1000 like, Have you seen this woman?
- 12:44Have you seen this woman?
- 12:46Dónde está this woman?
- 12:48The only Spanish he had to learn, which we heard 50 times.
- 12:51I visto este mujer.
- 12:52I viste este mujer.
- 12:54My wife was making fun.
- 12:56Like, is that all he knows how to say in Spanish?
- 12:58Yes, that is all he knows how to say.
- 12:59He practiced it for a week.
- 13:00Nailed it.
- 13:01Hashtag nailed it.
- 13:02For the car people, did anybody figure out what he was driving in that opening
- 13:06scene before they showed it later?
- 13:08Well, I thought it was a Porsche.
- 13:09Like, you can kind of tell.
- 13:10No, no, no, no, no.
- 13:11This was the, I think it was a thing.
- 13:13Yes!
- 13:13Oh, yeah, yeah, the Volkswagen thing.
- 13:15Yeah, yeah.
- 13:15Yeah, that's right.
- 13:16Oh, yeah, yeah.
- 13:17The thing that set the tone for me automatically is when he's sitting there
- 13:20at the table in a diner or whatever and he's like asleep and they have to
- 13:23come up and like wake him up and he's like, oh, and he kind of wakes up.
- 13:25I'm like, that should have been the foresight for me right
- 13:27there to just stop watching.
- 13:29Yeah, he basically fell asleep waiting for his meal to be brought and I'm like, oh,
- 13:33it's to show he's been exhausted by saying the same line over and over again all day.
- 13:37They're like, uh, Mr.
- 13:38Bridges, we're ready to shoot.
- 13:39Uh, uh, oh, yes, thank you for the lobster and whatever's here on the plate.
- 13:47Forget that, because we're going to cut immediately to football practice.
- 13:49Like, immediately.
- 13:51I'm like, oh, did I hit skip?
- 13:53Nope, we're just there.
- 13:54It took a sudden turn that I was not expecting.
- 13:56Here we are, training day, on a no name football team, which I think
- 14:01is supposed to be the Raiders.
- 14:03Yeah, the LA Outlaws, but it's the eighties and make up the teams.
- 14:07Otherwise you got to pay the NFL 25.
- 14:10And you know, you can't, you don't want to do that.
- 14:11Not, not on this tight budget and yeah, he's, you know, a
- 14:1435 year old wide receiver.
- 14:16We know there's what dozens of them in the NFL now is Larry
- 14:21Fitzgerald still receiving.
- 14:23But yeah, the, uh, the new coach, I guess, that's come in.
- 14:26He's like, I don't like you, you and your Steve Largent with a beard attitude.
- 14:31You say you got a good shoulder.
- 14:32Let's find out by having you just ram it into this thing.
- 14:36That's not how you use that sled, by the way.
- 14:38Like, I don't know how you guys played football in high school.
- 14:41You don't just randomly jam body parts into it.
- 14:44Like you're trying to break it.
- 14:47You're trying to pop your shoulder back into place and it's lethal weapon.
- 14:50Yeah.
- 14:50Like, unreal.
- 14:52Well, especially if he's also like, I'm going to do it just
- 14:54out of spite or whatever.
- 14:55Like you're going to cripple yourself out of spite for the coach.
- 14:59And this is why NFL players make sure they get their guaranteed money now.
- 15:03That hurt just watching it.
- 15:05I don't know who the stunt guy was or if Jeff was doing that, but every time
- 15:09he lunged into that thing, Oh man, my shoulder hurt just thinking about it.
- 15:13When I played football in the nineties, the padding wasn't that great on it.
- 15:16Then you could feel that metal bar hitting on your shoulder.
- 15:18So.
- 15:19Back in the eighties, I'm sure the padding was even worse.
- 15:21It's like filled with ball bearings or something.
- 15:25No, why are there shorts in here?
- 15:27Now, based on that opening scene with him and Cozumel and his limited Spanish,
- 15:32I was expecting him to turn around to the coach and be like, yo soy Fiesta.
- 15:40Have you seen this woman?
- 15:41What?
- 15:42No.
- 15:43Wait, I think that's the owner's daughter.
- 15:44We'll find out later.
- 15:45Anyway, so yeah, so he gets, like, cut by the coach right there, like, Oh,
- 15:49cool, you broke your shoulder again.
- 15:51Good luck.
- 15:52You're out.
- 15:53Like, oh, I gotta call my agent, Steve Kirsch, or whatever.
- 15:55Saul Rubenek.
- 15:56Discount Elliot Gould.
- 16:00Can you be a discount Elliot Gould when you're already starting
- 16:02off with Elliot Gould, though?
- 16:04I'm sorry, babe, you mean the star of The Devil and Max Devlin.
- 16:09And what was the one where James Bond played a Nazi?
- 16:12Oh, escaped from Athena or something like that.
- 16:15Where our romantic lead was Elliot Gould.
- 16:18Yeah, the seventies had a lot of coke too.
- 16:20Never forget.
- 16:22And Roger Moore was a Nazi.
- 16:24Get that dropped.
- 16:25Yeah.
- 16:27He drives off in his Porsche.
- 16:28What was it?
- 16:29911, 2.
- 16:300.
- 16:31It was an 84 911 SC Cabriolet.
- 16:35And in that parking lot shot, when you see it the first time,
- 16:38I was like, Ooh, this is cool.
- 16:39It was kind of funny to see the other Porsches in the parking lot.
- 16:42I'm sure Dan and Tanya probably picked up on it.
- 16:44To the left of the car was a 924 and to the right was a 928.
- 16:48And I was like, Oh, this is a Porsche get together here.
- 16:50It's like a club meeting.
- 16:51I always love these old movies because there are cars placed here
- 16:54and there and I play that game of like, what's that quarter panel from?
- 16:58And if I can figure it out from just even a taillight or something, then
- 17:01it makes it kind of fun and makes, you know, I've, I've spotted all sorts of
- 17:04weird cars in old movies like that.
- 17:05So that's the end of my nerd out on that stuff.
- 17:07Lots of Porsches in this movie.
- 17:09So there goes the budget again.
- 17:10I got the same thing with like the, uh, nude body doubles in eighties movies.
- 17:14And I'm like, wait a minute.
- 17:15I know those nipples.
- 17:18So he's trying to get a hold of his agent and the agent's like, whatever,
- 17:21pass him on to Hal Shoemaker, who we'll never see in this movie, unfortunately.
- 17:24I assume he's going to be played by like, I don't know, John Goodman or something.
- 17:29But yeah, basically, uh, shows up, meets the secretary E.
- 17:32D.
- 17:32and, you know, eventually talks to his lawyer.
- 17:35Or agent or whatever he's supposed to be.
- 17:37Uh, and he's like, look, you know, I can't represent players anymore
- 17:39because I represent ownership.
- 17:41Yeah.
- 17:42And Jeff's like, Oh, you're not allowed to do that.
- 17:44Discount Elliot Gold's like, well, I mean, I do what I want.
- 17:46You can try fighting it, but like, good luck with that.
- 17:49Jeff is escorted out by the secretary who drops way too much
- 17:53information about a private meeting.
- 17:55EDX position, I believe was her full name.
- 17:58And then she's also like, Hey, so if you ever looking to hang out
- 18:02or whatever, I'm at the ginger man bar or whatever down the street.
- 18:05I'm there just about every night.
- 18:07I'm like, well, that's definitely not going to come back later in the movie.
- 18:10And when it does, what it's like six months later.
- 18:12Yeah, totally.
- 18:14Like, Oh, Edie can't find a man in six months.
- 18:16Come on.
- 18:17Seems so sweet.
- 18:18It reeked of desperation, which was a cologne by I think Pierre Cardin or
- 18:23Armani back in the 80s too, but that whole scene was just pretty terrible,
- 18:27but I stopped at that moment as we reach back into our catalog, you know how
- 18:31you guys reach back into other movies.
- 18:33There's an episode we did with Ginger Man Raceway, and they tell
- 18:37the story about the Ginger Man bar.
- 18:40And so I had to stop for a second because I was really confused.
- 18:42We're in California, we're talking about meeting at the Ginger Man bar, and I'm
- 18:46like, wait, let me cross references.
- 18:47And there's only two.
- 18:49In the United States, official ginger man bars, Chicago and New York.
- 18:52And the one we are referencing to is in Chicago because the guy that owned
- 18:56that actually created the racetrack.
- 18:58So I thought for a second, I was like, wow, that's a fun little tie,
- 19:01a little piece of trivia, a little nugget there for the gear heads.
- 19:04No, no, no, no.
- 19:05It's a fictitious ginger man in Los Angeles.
- 19:08Did they not even have one back in the 80s?
- 19:10Or I don't know.
- 19:11It's like there were like 12 back in the 80s, but now there's only two.
- 19:14I don't know.
- 19:15Like Hard Rocks.
- 19:15Yes.
- 19:16This movie spiraled lots of research.
- 19:18I'm not going to kid you.
- 19:19So I had to stop at this moment and go look things up.
- 19:22The ginger man itself is actually a book, which is where these
- 19:25bars get their inspiration from.
- 19:26There's, you know, not to get into all that.
- 19:28I would be interested to find out if the writers of the movie
- 19:31purposely named it the ginger man.
- 19:32Yeah.
- 19:33As like sort of shout out to either of those bars or the book itself.
- 19:37Again, there's these little nuggets where I got to go back and do some
- 19:40research, you know, do some investigating.
- 19:42But there wasn't one in LA confirmed original New York and Chicago.
- 19:47Okay.
- 19:47East coast thing.
- 19:48Yeah.
- 19:49I mean, if we consider Chicago east coast.
- 19:51It's east from here, so I'll allow it.
- 19:53So here's the thing.
- 19:54Like, so when I lived in Detroit, everybody was like, Oh, that's Midwest.
- 19:57And I was like, but you guys all consider Chicago East coast.
- 20:00And that is six hours West of here.
- 20:03How come she's not getting a hard time saying Illinois East coast.
- 20:08Oh, people will say Chicago's East coast.
- 20:09And it's like, no, I'm sorry.
- 20:11Detroit in Michigan is at least on East coast time.
- 20:14What Tanya is referring to is the beaches of Pennsylvania, Pennsylvania
- 20:20is closer to the actual coastline.
- 20:22And I didn't mean that it's on the coastline much like she's doing.
- 20:26She's insinuating.
- 20:27It's part of the Eastern side of the U S Hey, it's East of the Mississippi.
- 20:31That's East coast.
- 20:32It's not a fly over state to fly through state.
- 20:36Trust me.
- 20:37You don't want to have to change in Midway or O'Hare.
- 20:39Oh God.
- 20:40Midway.
- 20:41So now we cut away after smelling all that desperation.
- 20:44And then we get a new scent.
- 20:46This one is Perspiration by Jeff Bridges as he's running laps.
- 20:49And look, Jeff Bridges is a handsome man, especially with the beard.
- 20:55Like, I mean, I'm used to him being clean cut, like in Tron
- 20:58and Starman and stuff like that.
- 20:59With the beard, I'm like, all right, I get it.
- 21:01I get it.
- 21:02Now the hair slicked back.
- 21:04Never really seen him as like sex icon Jeff Bridges.
- 21:07What the Big Lebowski didn't do it for you.
- 21:08That was just like looking in a mirror.
- 21:10So obviously raw sex, but I just want to put this out there.
- 21:14Steve did not win the Big Lebowski lookalike contest at our local Big
- 21:20Lebowski fest, and I did not win the Walter lookalike contest to be fair.
- 21:23The guy that.
- 21:25One for Walter, who's like nine years in a row because he basically is John Goodman.
- 21:30Yeah, John Goodman the third or something.
- 21:33John Goodman would lose that.
- 21:35I was glad the Chihuahua came up like third.
- 21:37They dressed the Chihuahua up in the dude's sweater
- 21:40and it won like third place.
- 21:42Sorry, we have Big Lebowski Festival here in town.
- 21:44They've been doing it for like 15 years or something?
- 21:47Yeah, 10, 12.
- 21:48Yeah, maybe 15.
- 21:49I don't know.
- 21:49A while.
- 21:50Yeah, check it out, Ogden, Utah.
- 21:51Uh, what happens?
- 21:53Oh yeah, so his buddy, uh, Dorian Harewood, Tommy, he comes and he's
- 21:57basically like, Hey, heard you got cut.
- 21:59That sucks, bro.
- 22:00You know, Jake may have a job for you.
- 22:02Who's Jake?
- 22:03Good old James Woods.
- 22:05James Woods, who they also casually mentioned.
- 22:07Yeah, he got stabbed like last week.
- 22:09That was a good time to talk to him and not get involved in a bunch of bullshit.
- 22:12I'm like, Actually, it's quite the opposite.
- 22:14Like, he just got stabbed.
- 22:16He's probably up to his neck in bullshit right now.
- 22:18Oh, a baby faced James Woods.
- 22:21Oh yeah, he was young there.
- 22:23Is he not baby faced anymore?
- 22:24Oh no, no, honey.
- 22:26Have the ravages of time finally caught up with James Woods?
- 22:28He looks like Hades now from Hercules.
- 22:31He does.
- 22:32Oh, shit.
- 22:32Well, he sort of looks like if He looks like Mr.
- 22:34Roper.
- 22:35Sure!
- 22:35Fact!
- 22:38The first picture when you Google James Wood, and he comes
- 22:42up, the left hand picture, Mr.
- 22:44Frickin Roper.
- 22:45Norman fell.
- 22:46Yeah, so the next morning we're at the beach.
- 22:48We see James Wood's trying to get the attention of his dog, Sam.
- 22:51He's like, come here, buddy!
- 22:52The dog, I swear, was gonna run right through the middle of this
- 22:55volleyball match they're watching.
- 22:56It's the whole, like, thing, that, like, yeah, the dog was getting
- 22:58involved, was, like, biting at the ball.
- 23:00And then we find out he's involved with the gambling, and I'm like, has he trained
- 23:03that dog to interfere with matches?
- 23:05Because I could totally see that being a plot point later.
- 23:07Yeah, basically like, Oh, so I heard you might have a job.
- 23:10I just want you to know I'm not working for you.
- 23:12James was like, Hey, whatever.
- 23:13None.
- 23:13I'm your buddy.
- 23:14Remember?
- 23:14I'm just doing this gambling thing.
- 23:16Hey, just check out my new car.
- 23:17Want to race?
- 23:18I just bought this.
- 23:19Looks like you've got a brand new car, right?
- 23:20Beautiful black Ferrari too.
- 23:23Eric, I think you need to take this next part away where
- 23:25we're talking about the race.
- 23:26Because I mean, if your two best since monitor isn't going off too
- 23:30much, I explained to Eric after watching his first time, I was
- 23:32like, dude, why didn't you just send me like the clip of this portion?
- 23:35Or about the watch is like, All I saw in this movie worth watching.
- 23:38Yeah, it was all in the trailer, too.
- 23:40That was the thing.
- 23:41It is.
- 23:41It's a lot of the trailer.
- 23:42And unfortunately, the car chase scene, unlike a lot of movies of the era, is in
- 23:46the first, like, 15 minutes of the movie.
- 23:48And you're like, I got an hour and 45 left to go.
- 23:51Like, what are we going to do now?
- 23:53I was hoping it was setting us up.
- 23:56Like, my loins were frothed for more of this the whole movie.
- 24:00I have to say, from a cinematic perspective, it was a Good chase scene.
- 24:06It was reminiscent of some of the seventies chase scenes.
- 24:09The stunts were good.
- 24:11There were a couple of cringe moments where James Woods, especially in the
- 24:13Ferrari kind of pulls out against traffic.
- 24:15And you're like, is he going to make it?
- 24:17I was like, Oh, that's close.
- 24:19Like even the stunt guy was probably having a code Brown moment.
- 24:23Doing these stunts because they were really really close and they were
- 24:26really really tight What I also like and you guys have heard me complain
- 24:29about before about using cars and films and chase scenes Is the audio
- 24:34portion of it and what was great about this was the audio was the 911 And the
- 24:40Ferrari, they were legit, never forget.
- 24:43So that was nice because it's not like, Oh, it's a Mustang, you know?
- 24:46And you're like, uh, you know, that's gross.
- 24:48Like some of the stuff you did on Miami vice.
- 24:50But in this case, it all went together.
- 24:52It gelled the two stunt drivers did a really good job.
- 24:55They came really close.
- 24:56They were like door to door a lot of the time.
- 24:59And it was very well done.
- 25:01I'm not sure what road they were on, but it looked like they were actually on some
- 25:06of those LA close to the Canyon roads.
- 25:08Not like a Mulholland, but almost going down into the valley.
- 25:11And it was like, they closed the road to do this.
- 25:13And this was very well, or did they?
- 25:15Yeah, that was my thing.
- 25:16I'm like, I hope those are stunt drivers coming the other way.
- 25:19Cause otherwise they might get hit then shot.
- 25:23And it was just long enough where some car chasings now are too short or it's like.
- 25:29Fast and the furious where it takes 10 minutes to drive an Alfa Romeo on
- 25:32an airplane, you know, kind of deal.
- 25:33Yeah.
- 25:33A 17 mile runway.
- 25:35It makes no sense.
- 25:36So in this case, it's like they didn't use the same piece
- 25:38of road over and over again.
- 25:40It kept going.
- 25:41It was a couple minutes long.
- 25:42I love how they were sort of shouting at each other that antagonism,
- 25:46like, Hey, screw you buddy, but we're going to send it, you know?
- 25:49So it was fun.
- 25:50It was playful.
- 25:50And I was like, cool.
- 25:51This is an interesting, again, a twist, like the fourth one in 15 minutes.
- 25:55Cause we went from Cozumel to Cozumel.
- 25:57To football camp, to the lawyer, to this car chase.
- 26:00And I'm like, this movie is really sporadic, but this could be a lot of fun.
- 26:03And so like Izzy, I'm like, I'm all fired up.
- 26:06I'm like, I'm here for all of this.
- 26:09How have I not heard about this movie?
- 26:11Some movies like they'll have, you know, a character or something that
- 26:14kind of disappears for a portion of it.
- 26:16Well, in this one, you know, James Wood at the beach had the dog.
- 26:18Well, the dog is his passenger Ferrari the whole time during this race.
- 26:21And you can see the dog various points in the car throughout the chasing.
- 26:25So I like that fact that they didn't just take the dog out of the picture.
- 26:28And the dog could give zero shits about what they're doing to the dog.
- 26:31It's just like, yeah, this is a Tuesday.
- 26:33I don't even have a seatbelt on like whatever, dude.
- 26:36By the way, I do just want to say it is totally cruel to have a Samoyed,
- 26:41an Alaskan sled dog in Los Angeles.
- 26:44Although this is a gorgeous dog.
- 26:46Really well trained dog.
- 26:47Really good looking dog.
- 26:48And to Dan's point, the continuity.
- 26:51I like that as well.
- 26:52Like a lot of these movies, it's like, well, that was a jump cut.
- 26:55Uh, we'll go back and do that over again.
- 26:57So all of that, this car chase is so good.
- 27:01And then he comes around the corner and there's a parked garbage truck
- 27:05and he goes from doing probably like 60, 70, whatever they're flying around
- 27:09the corner in and he's just like, and he stops in like two car lengths.
- 27:13Yeah, then he like puts it in park, puts on the hazard
- 27:15lights, like he's done, I guess.
- 27:18And it's like, there's no other cars.
- 27:19You could just like go in the other lane right behind James Woods.
- 27:22That was like one of the few times there was nobody else on the road.
- 27:25I think it was the only time the lanes were clear.
- 27:27That shows the incredible stopping capability of the Porsche 911.
- 27:30But additionally, signals they didn't have the budget to wreck it.
- 27:36It goes from 120 to zero in two seconds.
- 27:39But the other way around it's like two minutes because
- 27:41you got to like wind it up.
- 27:42I guess, uh, you know It will not pass a bus or a garbage
- 27:46truck a railroad crossing.
- 27:48It's actually jeff's 911 It's his daily driver.
- 27:51Like he's like no we're not doing this I just got a call from the
- 27:53team, you can afford another.
- 27:56Did somebody yell cut?
- 27:58So we get to like James Woods bar that I guess is like under construction.
- 28:01Uh, call it the palace.
- 28:02Basically like, yeah, yeah, it's gonna be my new, uh, my new legit thing.
- 28:05You know, uh, getting out of the gambling.
- 28:07And he's like, no, you're not, whatever.
- 28:08I can offer you a job.
- 28:10You know, if you want, you can be a celebrity, you know, bartender here
- 28:13and, or be security or whatever.
- 28:14And I'm like, You know, celebrity bartender's not that bad, Jeff.
- 28:16Right?
- 28:17Maybe, maybe that's the gig that ends up paying more, and you don't have
- 28:20to do shady shit for James Woods.
- 28:22Just throwing that out there.
- 28:24I mean Even security, it's like, let's be real, it's gonna be a cakewalk.
- 28:29But then instead, he's like, Alright, well, I got a real job for you, here.
- 28:32Find this chick.
- 28:33She stole 50k from me.
- 28:34And like, who is it?
- 28:36Oh, it's uh, the owner of the LA Outlaws daughter.
- 28:39I've been banging her for the past year or whatever, and she stole some money
- 28:42from me and can't seem to find her.
- 28:43Oh wait, and she's the one who stabbed me in the leg.
- 28:46Yeah, that's true.
- 28:47And I'm like, ah, it's all coming together.
- 28:50And she also owns the dog, we find out later.
- 28:52Oh, he is her dog.
- 28:53That's right.
- 28:55Sam the dog, yeah.
- 28:56And then apparently, James Woods has some dirt on Jeff Bridges,
- 29:00like some blackmail stuff that we never come to find out, or do we?
- 29:03Yeah, we do.
- 29:04We do.
- 29:05Yeah, what was it?
- 29:06It's that he told Oh, the point shaving thing, yeah, that's right.
- 29:09Yeah, that he threw the game, was gonna throw the game.
- 29:12He did throw the game, I think.
- 29:14We'll get to that when we get to that, because I had some
- 29:16questions about that too.
- 29:18Basically, Jeff Bridges is like, Okay, cool, I'll, uh, take your
- 29:20money and I'll find this chick.
- 29:22And he's like all indignant and stuff about it.
- 29:23I'm like, this isn't how you get one up on James Woods.
- 29:25This is just, you casually take the money and then, I don't
- 29:28know, disappear if you want.
- 29:30He goes to see the owner of the LA Outlaws, you know, the parents,
- 29:33basically, the mom and the stepdad.
- 29:35And he's basically like, Hey, so, uh, remember running to your
- 29:38daughter a couple months ago?
- 29:39Any idea where she's at?
- 29:41Might be hanging out.
- 29:42And the owner is instantly like, Jake sent you, didn't he?
- 29:44I'm not buying this bullshit.
- 29:46You can't bullshit a bullshitter.
- 29:47I don't football team.
- 29:48And then she's basically like, you know, I'll pay you double if you can find her
- 29:51or just take care of Jake, keep them busy so that, you know, she can live her life.
- 29:55Or she says something like watch over her for us or something like that.
- 29:58And I'm like, Jeff, consider the options, man.
- 30:01Like, right.
- 30:02But of course, he's all digging like, I'm not a spy, man.
- 30:05You kind of are, like, that's the whole point of what you're doing.
- 30:08And then he's like, actually, I'm just here to get, like, my old job back.
- 30:11Can't just fire me because I have a broken arm?
- 30:13Yeah, I'm like, you know, a receiver.
- 30:16I just want to play football, man.
- 30:17I thought generic white guy, stepdad, football owner team could also
- 30:21have been played by Ted Knight.
- 30:22The casting call for this movie, we already had these all stars.
- 30:25When can we bring him in for this?
- 30:27Ah, the budget.
- 30:28That's what it was.
- 30:28Yes.
- 30:29Hey, maybe he was busy doing a murder.
- 30:30She wrote or something.
- 30:31I don't know, man.
- 30:34There's some party for like, they're opening up some Canyon preserve, or I
- 30:38don't know exactly what was going on here.
- 30:40It has a nice view of LA.
- 30:41That's all that matters.
- 30:42And so they're at this.
- 30:44Party where they're like fundraiser and some environmentalist crash and
- 30:48we get oh politics are involved.
- 30:49Of course they are It's la with rich whites.
- 30:51We get it blah blah blah who cares move on So this was some ivory tower
- 30:55stuff going on here as we come to discover later Like there was a quote
- 30:59that I wrote At one point where they were saying, you know, we've come
- 31:02up here to leave the city behind us.
- 31:04Yeah, they're building these mansions looking down on all
- 31:08the plebeians in the city.
- 31:09Right.
- 31:10And I was like, what is this?
- 31:12I mean, this just reeks of Gordon Gecko all over the place.
- 31:15I was like, this is awful.
- 31:16Look, as someone who lives high up on a mountain, overlooking
- 31:19the poor, as I understand.
- 31:23So what happens for me?
- 31:24Yeah, so yeah, there's like a whole thing where he like confronts his
- 31:26uh, lawyer again, uh, Saul Rubenek and like tosses him into the band.
- 31:30He's like, Oh, you, you screwed me, man.
- 31:32You're screwing me, blah, blah, blah.
- 31:34Like, yeah, that's what lawyers do.
- 31:36So then he's off to Cozumel.
- 31:38I visto esta mujer, I visto esta mujer, here we go again.
- 31:44The best part about this little montage of him asking that question is there's
- 31:49one point where he's like, he looks at the picture of, you know, Rachel Ward, like
- 31:54smiling at the camera, blah, blah, blah.
- 31:56And then looks at a woman who's like suntanning.
- 32:00Are you identifying this woman based on her back to that picture?
- 32:04It was the dark curly hair.
- 32:07He saw the dark curly hair.
- 32:09Yeah, yeah, dark curly hair in Mexico.
- 32:11You're not gonna find that anywhere.
- 32:12What was the show where there was, like, the app that you could, like, photo the
- 32:16back of anybody's head and it would tell you what the front of it looks like?
- 32:19Wasn't that, like, on 30 Rock?
- 32:20I know the app that turns Dan into a woman.
- 32:22I've seen that one.
- 32:23It's pretty good.
- 32:24Go on.
- 32:26No, but to your point, I busted out laughing at this part because
- 32:30she's barking at him in Spanish.
- 32:32Again, this is another point in the movie where I'm entertained.
- 32:35I'm like, I wasn't expecting a twist, right?
- 32:37It's like M.
- 32:38Night Shyamalan.
- 32:38And then I'm like, wait, I got to translate what she's yelling.
- 32:41They let that go for a while.
- 32:43And I'm like, it just became.
- 32:44Too fast and I was like, whatever.
- 32:45I mean, basically you're like, you're a pervert.
- 32:47Get out of here.
- 32:47You know, what are you doing?
- 32:49I'm like, okay.
- 32:49Well, you didn't need to overreact like that.
- 32:51I thought that was funny.
- 32:52It was a little bit of levity.
- 32:53And then he peels off on a mohawk head after that.
- 32:55I'm like, wait, where's that thing from earlier?
- 32:58Ah, it doesn't matter.
- 32:58Maybe someone else is running it now.
- 33:00Couple scenes where he's like getting a call from Jake and he's like, hello?
- 33:03Oh yeah.
- 33:04I haven't found her yet.
- 33:05Well, I wasn't expecting to find her in the yellow pages or anything.
- 33:08Okay, let me ask you a question about this.
- 33:10Okay.
- 33:11Who answers their phone, sweaty, with their shirt open, glistening, and then,
- 33:16did you notice the background music?
- 33:18No.
- 33:19It was the acoustic version.
- 33:20To Phil Collins's Against All Odds, right?
- 33:24The name of the title of the movie itself.
- 33:27Take a look at me now.
- 33:28Exactly.
- 33:29It has two titles, right?
- 33:30But yeah, even my wife pointed out, she's like, You hear that?
- 33:32That's the Genesis song.
- 33:33And I'm like, It is.
- 33:35And then it dawned on me.
- 33:36I was like, Ooh, wait, I wonder.
- 33:38Oh, shoot.
- 33:39It's hot.
- 33:40In Mexico.
- 33:41He has to have his shirt open.
- 33:43Yeah, yeah, I was gonna say, it sounds like Eric's never been to Mexico.
- 33:45Like, he picks it up all sweaty with their shirt off.
- 33:48And Steve every morning.
- 33:50Yeah, but you play like romantic music and he's talking to James Woods.
- 33:54Talk about just flatlining the scene.
- 33:57Well, that's, that's the other thing with this movie.
- 33:59Like the music score or whatever.
- 34:02Like, yeah, there's like the acoustic version of a Phil
- 34:04Collins song, which is very 80s.
- 34:05I get it.
- 34:06Sorry, but fuck Phil Collins.
- 34:09Babe, how do you really feel about Phil Collins though?
- 34:10I mean, he divorced his wife with a fax?
- 34:13Something like that?
- 34:13Have you not forgiven him for leaving Genesis or whatever?
- 34:16Or was that No, no, I haven't forgiven him for all of Tarzan and all of
- 34:20Spirits, Stallion and Cimarron, and I was a nanny during That was Ryan Adams.
- 34:25Sure, it's Phil Collins.
- 34:26He was Tarzan.
- 34:27I don't know about the other ones.
- 34:29I don't forgive him for being owned by Disney during the time when I was Well,
- 34:33I was a nanny because that's all I heard.
- 34:36All right.
- 34:36Well, Oh, is he Australian, right?
- 34:39Or was that just English?
- 34:44Trying to remember the South Park.
- 34:45It's funny you guys mentioned the Phil Collins, because when Eric sent out
- 34:51the suggestion to watch this movie, I went on to attempt to find it.
- 34:56Where I realized I already had it on my Plex.
- 34:57When I typed it in, the first thing that came up was the music video for
- 35:01the Phil Collins Against the Odds.
- 35:02And I was like, okay.
- 35:03So then I started looking into it a little bit.
- 35:05Because I knew when he did the soundtrack for Tarzan and stuff like that.
- 35:08I was like, okay.
- 35:08I was like, I thought that was something he did later in his career.
- 35:10But apparently he started doing music for movies earlier on.
- 35:13Where have you guys been?
- 35:15Am I the only Genesis fan left on the planet?
- 35:18Yes.
- 35:19Eric.
- 35:19Genesis was huge when I was two.
- 35:24The sledgehammer video.
- 35:25I think I was three and Peter Gabriel had already left.
- 35:29I wanna be your sledgehammer.
- 35:32Oh, I almost forgot.
- 35:34He did actually find the girl randomly like at a market or whatever.
- 35:37That's right.
- 35:38She pulled off on the moped after he was like trying to
- 35:40flirt with her or something.
- 35:41And she's like, whatever, dude.
- 35:43Bye.
- 35:45I love the quote when he tries to pick her up just like
- 35:48casually like trying to play mr.
- 35:50Cool, and he's like, well, you know, there's not much to do around here and
- 35:52she goes get off the island The fairy leaves every morning is Cozumel an island.
- 35:57No Cozumel is a coastline The writing in this is just top notch.
- 36:03I did like after this Jeff gives a call to James Woods And he was like,
- 36:08well, it's not like I'm just gonna bump into her buying fruit or something.
- 36:12win, win, nudge, nudge.
- 36:15Yeah, I, you see James was the other end, like that's all specific . So
- 36:19at this point, we're actually 38 minutes into the movie at this point.
- 36:22'cause I made timestamps as I went along and I had to stop again
- 36:25and do some research because as she's talking, I turned to my wife
- 36:29and I said, where is she from?
- 36:31What accent is this?
- 36:32What affect is she trying to put on?
- 36:34So Rachel Wood is from Cornwell, England, and she's trying to play an American.
- 36:39And just her American accent is not great.
- 36:43Well, she does sound rich.
- 36:45Yeah, she does.
- 36:46Yeah.
- 36:46She kind of sounds like a Kennedy.
- 36:48The next day, she mentioned something about like taking the ferry.
- 36:51We see Jeff Bridges playing chess with a kid, just waiting
- 36:53for her to show up at the ferry.
- 36:55And then he misses it.
- 36:56And then I guess he charters a boat to take him to the ruins of Tulum,
- 37:00which is now a major cruise port.
- 37:02I've been there.
- 37:03It's fantastic.
- 37:04They never mentioned a Jeff Bridges movie being shot there.
- 37:07And I was kind of disappointed about that.
- 37:09But I was looking at those like, Oh yeah, I got pictures of all.
- 37:11This is great.
- 37:12Been there.
- 37:13And of course, Tulum and Cozumel, beautiful, like light blue
- 37:18beaches with the water and the sand and just heaven on earth.
- 37:23So it's like, okay, cool.
- 37:24They definitely got their location scout.
- 37:25I hope you got a bonus for this one.
- 37:27So next time you go, are you going to be the nerd standing there
- 37:30going, did you know that they filmed the Jeff Bridges movie?
- 37:32Only if the steam room is involved.
- 37:34Uh, more on that later.
- 37:35And Jeff Bridges was there waiting for her to come and catch the ferry.
- 37:38It actually wasn't chess.
- 37:39He was playing field checkers and they were using beer caps.
- 37:42Oh, that makes sense.
- 37:43That's right.
- 37:44Cause that's all, and I was like, okay, I might have to start cleaning some beard
- 37:46caps since I've lost a bunch of checks.
- 37:48See the kid pop a couple Coronas or whatever, like,
- 37:51haha, I got another bond here.
- 37:53She's there like drawing or painting or whatever.
- 37:56Jeff Bridges walks up like, oh, so we run into each other again.
- 38:00Of course, she's like, all right, who sent you?
- 38:01Was it my parents or was it Jake?
- 38:02And he's like, What are you talking about?
- 38:06I'm just here trying to hit on a hot chick.
- 38:07I saw once that just happens to be in Cozumel with me,
- 38:10and I'm like, yeah, whatever.
- 38:12Yeah.
- 38:12He starts playing like hard to get, if this works, like spoilers, it does because
- 38:17she just pops up in his hotel room later, knock at the door like she's housekeeping.
- 38:22How is it that he's there for like, what a week?
- 38:25Have you seen this Moher?
- 38:27Have you seen this Moher in like, what an hour?
- 38:30She finds him.
- 38:31Mm-Hmm.
- 38:32. She's a good detective.
- 38:34There's a couple other good detectives in this.
- 38:37The other thing too, is he's broke as all get out.
- 38:40He's got the money from James Woods, right?
- 38:42He gave him 10 grand and he said he would pay him another 20 when he got back.
- 38:46He's already been on the island for like a week.
- 38:49He spent like 10.
- 38:5125 cents a day.
- 38:52Yeah.
- 38:52Yeah.
- 38:53He owns Cozumel now with 10 grand.
- 38:56But the distance from LA to Cozumel in the 80s, gotta remember, you
- 39:00know, it's not Southwest Airlines budget want to get away flight.
- 39:03It's 3100 miles away.
- 39:06I thought the other guy paid for that flight.
- 39:08There's some money transacting here that doesn't add up.
- 39:1113 million dollar budgeter.
- 39:13I mean, what, you wanted to watch him on the plane for, like, X hours?
- 39:18Yeah, yeah.
- 39:19He, he, Eric wants to see him smoking on the airplane.
- 39:22Nobody cared to see his plane trip.
- 39:24Nobody cared to see him shirtless again either, but here we go.
- 39:28I'm sorry, some of us are going to beg to differ.
- 39:30I mean, he had a six pack or an eight pack.
- 39:32You know, on that note, I'm gonna take my shirt off right now.
- 39:36Wait, babe, be careful.
- 39:37We're out of gun butter.
- 39:38Luckily, I got this Sierra Nevada pale ale I can just rub on my top body here.
- 39:44Oh, my top.
- 39:47So anyway, then she invites them over to her studio or whatever, which, by
- 39:52the way, must be nice to have a studio directly on the beach where I think
- 39:56it's also a stop on the Carnival Cruise.
- 39:59You mean the studio that no one knows where it is and you go down the road
- 40:03till you see the three beer cans dangling off a tree branch and then
- 40:06you make a right and you keep going?
- 40:08Yeah, those directions are insane.
- 40:10She gave him a distance, she said 19 kilometers out of town
- 40:14to find the out of town to find a couple beer caps or whatever.
- 40:17Yeah.
- 40:18It was like, all right, then you take a ride at the tree with the yellow dog
- 40:21next to it as is tradition in his VW.
- 40:24Fine.
- 40:25We get to see it finally.
- 40:27All right.
- 40:28So Steve, you have to go and then you're in turn left at the cow.
- 40:30Not that cow, the other cow, the cow was in the barn.
- 40:34So you just got to be careful there, but you can make a left.
- 40:36When you see the cow, not the first cow, the other cow, and then you're
- 40:39gonna go until there's a tree.
- 40:40Now, there's a lot of trees, but you want that tree.
- 40:43It's the one.
- 40:44My biggest thing with this studio, it's just like two walls
- 40:47and like a bunch of art shit up.
- 40:49It's a lean to.
- 40:50Is there not monsoon season in Cozumel?
- 40:52I don't know if she's been there.
- 40:54Or high tides, or, I don't know.
- 40:56But she's only been there for like, Or whatever, right?
- 40:59Like, You took issue with that?
- 41:01Yes.
- 41:01I took issue with the medieval undergarments that she was wearing.
- 41:05What was that?
- 41:06Was that a nightgown?
- 41:07Was that a smock?
- 41:08Did she just escape the mental hospital?
- 41:11Like, what was she wearing?
- 41:12I'm sorry, it's called a caftan, and it's something that
- 41:15ladies of a certain age wear.
- 41:17Yeah, she wanted to keep sand out of there.
- 41:20Yeah.
- 41:20I don't know that she wore undergarments much in this movie.
- 41:23When she shows up with that burlap sack.
- 41:26It's called a caftan.
- 41:29It's sort of like a Moo Moo, but with less stitching.
- 41:31It was terrible.
- 41:32So then they start talking, and this is where the movie
- 41:34starts becoming super dramatic.
- 41:36She's talking about like, Oh yeah, Jake was a fling.
- 41:38I was just basically banging him to get back at my parents.
- 41:41Also, my brother killed himself.
- 41:43I'm like, what?
- 41:43My god, I am getting so rock hard at this passion.
- 41:46I cannot concentrate.
- 41:48Blood is rushing elsewhere.
- 41:49Babe, it's a sob story, so she's gonna get a blowjob.
- 41:52She was giving the sob story, so she's getting the blowjob?
- 41:54Yeah, she's getting a blowjob.
- 41:55That's what I said.
- 41:56She's getting a blowjob.
- 41:57That explains why Jeff Bridges is like, So I gotta go, you
- 42:00know, as a sane man would do.
- 42:02And she's like, but Why?
- 42:03Why'd you fucking come here if we weren't gonna fuck?
- 42:05You know, basically.
- 42:07And I'm like, good point.
- 42:08And then it just got super awkward.
- 42:11Take it away, because my next note is kissing like horses eating an apple.
- 42:15You just read my mind.
- 42:17I just fallen out of her chair.
- 42:20It was so bad.
- 42:21I don't know.
- 42:22I expected it to be typical 80s, kind of sensual, just romantic scene.
- 42:29Saxophone.
- 42:29Some Kenny G.
- 42:31None of that.
- 42:33Your analogy is 100 percent correct.
- 42:36These horses.
- 42:37And then it's a montage of them like diving down into the ocean to, I don't
- 42:42know, look for pearls and drowned and then just a lot of like licking and
- 42:46again, back to the, the horse kisses and then dancing and then, and then
- 42:51having the world's worst wet t shirt contest when they just kind of like
- 42:54leave the dance party to go take a dip in the water and random butt cheeks.
- 42:58I mean, it was everything you didn't want in a sex scene.
- 43:04It was terrible.
- 43:06Oh my God, I saw more of Jeff Bridges tongue than I think I
- 43:09ever need to see in my life.
- 43:10Oh, so gross.
- 43:13And then when the montage is over, it's like, man, it's been a great two weeks.
- 43:16I'm like, really?
- 43:17Okay, here we go.
- 43:18That blew my mind.
- 43:19I literally said to myself, and I wrote it on my notepad.
- 43:22I said, how long has he been there?
- 43:24That exact next note, it's like, it was a wonderful two weeks.
- 43:27I'm like, oh, what?
- 43:29And then this is where, uh, I guess Jeff Bridges just nutted.
- 43:32And so he has to like, spill his deepest, darkest secret to this woman.
- 43:37Where it's like, so yeah, there was this time where like the point
- 43:40spread in the football game was four points and the ball was coming my
- 43:43way and I want to get a touchdown.
- 43:44But I was like, Running math in my head.
- 43:46So I like dropped the, no, but he caught it.
- 43:49It sounded like he like caught it and then like threw it out of bounds or something.
- 43:53He caught it and he ran and he made it to the five yard line.
- 43:56He said, and then he got tackled and he fumbled the ball.
- 44:00It had just let it go.
- 44:02And then he was like, if somebody else on the team would have done
- 44:05that, you would be like, Finding me in jail or whatever he said.
- 44:08I don't even know by the end of the story Like he's like damn
- 44:11near crying and everything.
- 44:12I just wanted her to be like that's the stupidest story I've heard in my
- 44:15life Did I tell you my brother killed himself and i've been banging james
- 44:19woods for the last year and that's the best you've got Okay, and you know what?
- 44:23She says instead she goes I wish I'd seen you play football.
- 44:27Yeah, it was totally a, I wasn't paying attention, but you know what?
- 44:32I'm sure you're good at what you do.
- 44:33This was the worst pillow talk in a movie ever.
- 44:37Her mother owns a team.
- 44:38How does she never watch a single game?
- 44:40I don't know.
- 44:40Do you watch the games your mom owns?
- 44:44I don't know.
- 44:45What?
- 44:45I'm kidding.
- 44:46So the appeal of this is like, Eric, if you're like having that moment of post
- 44:50nut clarity and you're talking about the time you and your uncle were like
- 44:53working on a car, but then the jack gave way and crushed your uncle under it.
- 44:57And your wife's response was something like, Oh man, I would have been a
- 45:01great ride in that car along the coast.
- 45:03Oh, I wish I could have ridden with you in the car.
- 45:05Yeah.
- 45:05Right.
- 45:06I mean, eww.
- 45:07The whole thing was just.
- 45:09Forced from beginning to end.
- 45:10It was awful.
- 45:11You know, we talked about in Corvette Summer, how there was no chemistry
- 45:15between Mark Hamill and Annie Potts.
- 45:17This was a thousand times worse.
- 45:20Like, they had zero on screen chemistry.
- 45:23She legit looks like she just has disdain for Jeff Bridges.
- 45:26Right, everyone?
- 45:27I don't get it.
- 45:28Disdain for literally everyone in the world.
- 45:31She has disdain for living.
- 45:32I don't know, man.
- 45:33She's skinny and pretty.
- 45:34So?
- 45:35So that's all you need.
- 45:36Coke's big in the 80s.
- 45:37There's a lot of skinny girls.
- 45:38Trust me.
- 45:39She's skinny and pretty.
- 45:40She gets everything she wants.
- 45:41There's a lot of Coke in this movie too.
- 45:43Did you notice that?
- 45:44Coca Cola?
- 45:45Yeah, that kind.
- 45:45Coca Cola.
- 45:46I think we'll get to it.
- 45:47For the Mark Hamill Annie Potts thing, at least there, she was trying to be a lady
- 45:52of the road or, you know, prostitute.
- 45:54So that alone would, it's not like going to be intimate, although they
- 45:57did try to play it that way, but that is more believable than this movie.
- 46:01Well, yeah, this is why you don't give hoes all the money, because if they
- 46:04have all the money, then they become this person as opposed to Annie Butts.
- 46:09That's what we're talking about, right?
- 46:10Well, we haven't even crescendoed yet on this thing.
- 46:12So let's just keep going.
- 46:14Yeah.
- 46:14So, and then she also casually went like, Oh, I'd love to watch you play, by the
- 46:17way, I didn't steal that money from Jake.
- 46:19And he's instantly like, wait, what?
- 46:21We should run off together.
- 46:22What?
- 46:23No, no, no, no.
- 46:23She didn't.
- 46:24She said, my mom cut off the trust fund.
- 46:26I'm out of money.
- 46:26I have to go home.
- 46:27And he was like, what about the money from Jake?
- 46:29And then she was like, I never took any of the money from Jake.
- 46:31Why would I take money from him if I was trying to get out from under him?
- 46:34And then he was like, Oh, well, I have money from Jake.
- 46:37Should we just run off together?
- 46:38Yeah.
- 46:38He'll just forget about that shit.
- 46:40Cut to like 10 days later after he's like, tried to throw Jake off his trail by,
- 46:44I assume, just racking up airline miles to Mexico city and, uh, other cities.
- 46:49He knew somebody was on his trail.
- 46:51Trail.
- 46:51So he was, yeah, just flying around to like a million different cities and
- 46:55she was really bored in a small town.
- 46:58So her life is the worst.
- 46:59Ooh.
- 47:01Yeah.
- 47:01So this is when they're like, uh, again, the, the Mayan ruins
- 47:04there at a Tulum or whatever, and they're like, Chichen Itza, right?
- 47:07That's where she wanted to go.
- 47:08Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 47:08Chichen Itza.
- 47:09That's right.
- 47:09That's the one with the pyramids and stuff.
- 47:11Yeah, and she was like, ugh, everything here is absolutely the worst.
- 47:15Absolutely fucking terrible.
- 47:16You'll see when you get here.
- 47:17And then she takes him to like, absolutely stunning places.
- 47:21Yeah, and they see the hieroglyphs about like, the way Mayans used
- 47:24to play football, basically.
- 47:25Where he's like, oh look, they even have like, chin straps and stuff.
- 47:28And like, yeah, but if you lost, you gotta execute it.
- 47:31And if you won, you sometimes gotta execute it.
- 47:34And if you met him in the game, you might have gotten executed.
- 47:36Yeah.
- 47:37And if you called the referee a racial epithet, you were beheaded.
- 47:41And it's like, you know, maybe not too bad.
- 47:43High lie was a brutal sport.
- 47:45That's all I'm going to say.
- 47:46Right.
- 47:47Wait, was it highlight?
- 47:48Well, that was the one with the big scoop pan things or whatever.
- 47:52That was a highlight court.
- 47:53I mean, that's what the Mayans played.
- 47:54That was their sport.
- 47:55And that's what she was talking about.
- 47:56For some reason, I thought that was like Middle Eastern, but anyway.
- 47:59No, and it was cool that they were making that parallel to modern
- 48:02football and rugby to high life, even though it shares some properties
- 48:06with like lacrosse and all that.
- 48:07But that was a fun for me as a history nerd.
- 48:09I was like, this is cool.
- 48:10I've also seen this on ancient alien.
- 48:12So we're all good now.
- 48:14Look, just because white people didn't do it doesn't mean it's aliens.
- 48:20Chupacabra.
- 48:21That's all I'm going to say.
- 48:22Look, I have solved the chupacabra.
- 48:24Just look up a sloth skeleton.
- 48:26Well, speaking of looking up, what about that upskirt as she's coming down?
- 48:33Who is the key grip on this scene in particular?
- 48:35I was like, what are we doing now?
- 48:37Uh, looking it up, it looks like it was Bowbridges.
- 48:40Interesting.
- 48:41Yeah, as I was around this time, she's like, Oh yeah, by the
- 48:44way, I did steal Jake's money.
- 48:45It's in Mexico City, by the way.
- 48:47And I'm like, Run, Jeff.
- 48:48Run fucking now.
- 48:49Go back to LA.
- 48:50Become a celebrity bartender.
- 48:52You're a goddamn fool.
- 48:54And instead he's like, You know I love you, right?
- 48:56But he does it in the creepiest, most alpha way possible, where he's
- 48:59like, I can never live without you.
- 49:01You're mine now.
- 49:02We can't be apart.
- 49:03And I'm like, What the fuck is happening with this movie?
- 49:05Tanya, please explain.
- 49:06Uh, twist movie.
- 49:09Got a movie.
- 49:10You remember earlier I made notes.
- 49:13What do you mean about Jake's?
- 49:15My, and then the, the movie sort of answers it as I'm thinking
- 49:18about these questions, I literally wrote down and I put a star and I
- 49:22said, How is this an R rated movie?
- 49:27Eric, it's funny you should ask, because then Ah, here we go.
- 49:32Jeff Bridges, I think, said something like, Hey, so I hear there's
- 49:35like a sweat house in this place.
- 49:37Not to them, bare ass Fucking in these ancient ruins in what
- 49:42is like an ancient Mayan spa.
- 49:45Yeah.
- 49:46The first thing I thought of was like, that is not something you do
- 49:49unless you want to incur the wrath of like the Incans and the Mayans.
- 49:53Yes.
- 49:54Chupacabra.
- 49:55Curse upon you.
- 49:56You imagine the Montezuma's revenge she's gonna get.
- 49:59So my thought was the fact that there were other tourists there,
- 50:02a place like I would be all quiet.
- 50:03So they'd be in there going to town.
- 50:04So the echoing would just amplify out.
- 50:06It was completely empty, the whole place.
- 50:08It was like by itself.
- 50:09I was like, what kind of like temple is this where there's nobody else?
- 50:13The cruise ship hasn't pulled up.
- 50:15Like it's a random Tuesday or something.
- 50:17Like, no, there's people there.
- 50:19There's park Rangers there.
- 50:20Like someone walking in, like.
- 50:22Hey, put your clothes on and get out of our sweat lodge.
- 50:26These are ancient ruins.
- 50:27You're going to get all of the diseases.
- 50:29And then it became this weird montage of Incan carvings and
- 50:36body placement and crying.
- 50:38Yeah.
- 50:39I didn't know if they were playing twister or searching for gold.
- 50:43What the hell was happening?
- 50:45The ancient Mayan ruin equivalent of rug burn in your B hole.
- 50:49That's why she's crying.
- 50:52Don't even mention the spiders.
- 50:53Oh yeah.
- 50:54Spiders and snakes and snakes in her butt.
- 50:57Bottle caps from past.
- 50:58Tourists asked me if I wanted to fuck it.
- 51:00And by the way, it's my mother watching the movie with us.
- 51:04And I said, no, because I don't want snakes in any of our butts.
- 51:07And my mom agreed that neither of those things.
- 51:10We've been talking about the budget of this film for quite
- 51:12a bit now, and I understand where it all went in this scene.
- 51:16How much Johnson Johnson baby oil did they use?
- 51:20Like, I've never seen people so shiny in my life.
- 51:24So you've never seen a Fast Furious movie?
- 51:26Yeah, same.
- 51:28Eric's never been to Mexico during the summer.
- 51:30No, but you can buy gun butter by the barrel.
- 51:33Yeah, it was just wow.
- 51:35They were bronze.
- 51:36I mean, they might as well have been statues.
- 51:38It was just unreal.
- 51:39No, there were statues there, Eric, and they weren't covered in gun butter,
- 51:43except the ones they were fucking on.
- 51:45You know, they were more convincing than these two were
- 51:49in terms of their chemistry.
- 51:50Again, it was even more awkward than the previous love scenes.
- 51:54Oh, the body placements alone.
- 51:56I was like, is this a Pilates class?
- 51:58Like, what are you guys doing to show off their youthful,
- 52:02flexible, taunt body Jeff Bridges.
- 52:06Look good.
- 52:06I'm not going to say in the midst of all this, then the coach, Oh my God.
- 52:13The assistant coach solely shows up randomly.
- 52:16I'm like, Uh, hello, welcome back.
- 52:18You're in a public touristy place and you're amazed someone pops their
- 52:21head in and hearing y'all boning.
- 52:23You're like, Sully, what are you doing here?
- 52:24I'm on a cruise.
- 52:26Right?
- 52:26What the fuck are you doing here?
- 52:28Banging in the ancient ruins of Chichen Itza.
- 52:30Well, the best part is he's like, well, you weren't hard to find.
- 52:33I'm like, this is the eighties, man.
- 52:34How are you tracking this guy?
- 52:36By what magic?
- 52:37Are you a time traveler?
- 52:38By phone calls from Cozumel.
- 52:40It's not that hard.
- 52:42And then he's like, yeah, Jake sent me and then pulls a gun out.
- 52:44And he's like, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, wait, let's talk about this.
- 52:47Like, what does he have on you?
- 52:48You're like, and that's all it takes.
- 52:51And then there's a fight despite, and there's a ledge.
- 52:55Oh no.
- 52:55Jeff Bridges can get thrown over the ledge.
- 52:57And we're only an hour into this movie, 62 minutes at this point.
- 53:00And then slowly like kind of tosses them to the side and Jeff Bridges
- 53:03like hits his head or whatever.
- 53:05And then the coach starts like.
- 53:06Hey, hey, Terry, you okay?
- 53:08I'm like, wait, did he have a change of heart or something?
- 53:10Like, hey, it's okay.
- 53:11I'm sorry, man.
- 53:12Look, let's get you to the hospital.
- 53:13You're going to be just fine.
- 53:14But then, uh, Jessica, that's right.
- 53:16That's her name in this movie.
- 53:17She grabs the gun that's like on the floor.
- 53:19And he's like, bitch, stop, get help.
- 53:21Give me that gun.
- 53:22Pow.
- 53:24Roll credits, guys.
- 53:24What do we think?
- 53:25No, there's more.
- 53:26Ah, yeah, we're at the halfway point of this travesty.
- 53:29Another quote, I wrote it down because, you know, he's there consoling Sully
- 53:33and, Sully, it's gonna be okay.
- 53:35Maybe I'll stop the bleeding as he just tries to compress the bullet
- 53:40hole that's right at his heart.
- 53:42I'm like, really?
- 53:43Okay, he said maybe Jessica's like, yeah, I don't need this shit and fucking runs
- 53:47and Jeff Bridges like where are you going?
- 53:49I thought we were gonna like love this.
- 53:51Okay So then he ends up carrying sully's corpse through the ruins
- 53:55of chichen itza to another stop on the tour And nobody noticed Nobody
- 54:00noticed a guy carrying another guy.
- 54:02Well, there was nobody around, so of course they didn't.
- 54:05I don't care if it's monsoon season, someone saw them.
- 54:08You guys didn't see the kids playing in the highlight field?
- 54:12The whole beginning of the movie, just to go back, where he's
- 54:14like, have you seen this woman?
- 54:15Do you think any of them are going to say anything?
- 54:18After the first person he asked, I was like, none of these MFers are
- 54:21going to say they've seen this woman.
- 54:22Gringo, get the hell out.
- 54:24Get out of here, gringo.
- 54:25Yo, Emigra, Emigra.
- 54:27It's terrible.
- 54:28Dumps his body into one of those, uh, what are they called?
- 54:30The cenotes or whatever.
- 54:31And uh, yeah, just another beautiful spot on the tour and
- 54:36like, yeah, he's tied to a rock.
- 54:38He'll be fine.
- 54:39They'll never find him.
- 54:39Oh yeah.
- 54:40She went back to his hotel room, stole all of his money and flew off.
- 54:43You would think that would be roll credits, right?
- 54:47We cut to him being back in LA.
- 54:49Like what did we find out?
- 54:49It was like two months later, some shit like that.
- 54:52Basically, he walks up to James Woods and is like, Hey, I quit.
- 54:54I'm not looking for her anymore.
- 54:56And James Woods is like, What are you, what the fuck are you talking about?
- 54:59You think I don't know what's going on?
- 55:01And like, basically he just implies like, I know what's going
- 55:03on, you know, blah, blah, blah.
- 55:04But hey, I got another job for you so you can play football again.
- 55:07I still got the hooks, we're still friends, whatever.
- 55:09He's like, no man, we're not friends, whatever, blah, blah, blah.
- 55:11Jessica, what the fuck are you doing here?
- 55:13I've been looking for you for months.
- 55:15And she's like, I've been here.
- 55:16Whatever.
- 55:18Unreal.
- 55:19Yeah, yeah, cool, yeah, we're gonna miss Sully.
- 55:21Hey, you wanna watch a game?
- 55:22The whole rest of this movie, I'm like, just leave, dude.
- 55:24We go to Jake's Palace, it's open now, it's complete.
- 55:27Oh, that's right, yeah, he's like, yeah, come on by the club tonight, you know,
- 55:29whatever, I'll put you on the list.
- 55:30And so, yeah, that night, he shows up, and he's still like, talking to James Woods,
- 55:35like, I don't work for you, I just came here for the free booze or something.
- 55:38And he says, I gotta get your stink off of me.
- 55:41I was like, that's a good quote, I like that, it's a good one.
- 55:43Yeah, so why'd you come to his place?
- 55:45Exactly!
- 55:46And then, he sits down next to a girl and I'm like, Is that Christy Swanson?
- 55:50Or Elizabeth Shue?
- 55:51Like, Steve's interested in this girl.
- 55:53So I looked it up.
- 55:53Her name is Tamara Stafford.
- 55:55She starred in three movies.
- 55:58This, The Hills Have Eyes 2, and Riptide.
- 56:01And then called it a career, I guess.
- 56:03She's literally credited as Kirsch's girlfriend.
- 56:05Yeah.
- 56:06Saul Rubinick's girlfriend or whatever.
- 56:08And the way they did her hair, I thought at first it was Edie, and they had redone
- 56:12her hair, kind of lightened her up, because they have almost a similar face.
- 56:16And then I realized it was a different girl.
- 56:19And I'm like, okay, well, nevermind.
- 56:19That kind of breaks the illusion.
- 56:21We talked about it before, the music in this movie.
- 56:24We get incredible music performance from Sir Phil Cutler.
- 56:27Oh, no, I'm sorry.
- 56:28Kid Creole and the Coconut.
- 56:29So I had to stop because I was like, wait a second.
- 56:32I was like, is this kind of like interesting?
- 56:34This like first part of it.
- 56:35And I was like, is this real?
- 56:37So Kid Creole and the Coconut are in fact a very real group.
- 56:41Oh, yeah.
- 56:42Except the coconuts apparently have been rotating.
- 56:46Those first three that are in the movie were the original three coconuts.
- 56:49They left at some point, when I guess the first album was not
- 56:52a big success, so go figure.
- 56:54And then he's had a rotating past of coconuts since then.
- 56:58You gotta keep them fresh.
- 56:59You do.
- 57:00I don't even know where to start with this.
- 57:01Izzy, do you want to talk about their unshaven armpits, or do we want to talk
- 57:05about the fact that he looks like DeBarge had a baby with Big Bad Voodoo Daddy?
- 57:09I was thinking of mysterious Lou Bega vibes.
- 57:11Yeah, I mean, look, people can shave whether they want or not.
- 57:15I'm not here to judge.
- 57:16It's a stylistic choice.
- 57:18As a dancer?
- 57:19Yeah.
- 57:19All three of them?
- 57:21Is that a uniform requirement to not shave your bits?
- 57:23Maybe they're like Pit Merkins or something.
- 57:25Hey, hey, think about it.
- 57:27Coconuts are hair . Yeah.
- 57:29There we go.
- 57:30Yeah.
- 57:33That's how you know the coconut is ripe, if you know what I'm saying.
- 57:38Here's the thing, at least you know they're of age.
- 57:40Exactly.
- 57:41You know, they're old enough to grow hair.
- 57:43You don't want no bold green coconut or whatever the hell.
- 57:46I just broke him again and Eric's gone.
- 57:49Alright, so then, uh, we broke him.
- 57:54This might've been better than the baseball bat with the four and a
- 57:58half running around in a circle.
- 58:04That's right.
- 58:06Oh, wow.
- 58:08So, I didn't notice that the first time watching it.
- 58:11Just for the purpose of doing this time, I had it playing in the background
- 58:13muted while we were going over this.
- 58:15See, this is what he does.
- 58:17It's just like trading paint.
- 58:18No.
- 58:19Like I did it so I could see the things like we said, they had armpit hair.
- 58:22I didn't notice that when I watched it.
- 58:24But then when you said it, I looked up at the screen.
- 58:25I'm like, Holy crap.
- 58:26They did.
- 58:27Yeah.
- 58:27They like shimmer in the light too.
- 58:29It's like bleached.
- 58:30Yeah.
- 58:31Tentacles.
- 58:31They like zoomed in on them.
- 58:33How'd you miss it?
- 58:34Zoom and enhance.
- 58:35Later in the scene it looked like they were clean shaven.
- 58:36So speaking of getting arrested for harvesting underage things, James
- 58:39Woods has a job offer for you.
- 58:41For Jeff Bridges, he's basically like, Hey, so, uh, Sully, he came to me because
- 58:45him and, uh, Kersh or whatever were, uh, trying to sell me out on some betting
- 58:49shit and fixing games and blah blah blah.
- 58:52And basically, I need you to go get some files on Kersh because
- 58:55he has dirt on, like, everybody.
- 58:56But if you get these files, then we're squared.
- 58:58You'll never have to talk to me again.
- 59:00You get your stink off or whatever the hell you keep saying, yet
- 59:02still showing up at my club.
- 59:03Okay, cool.
- 59:04I can do that.
- 59:05He confronts Kirsch in the bathroom.
- 59:07In the bathroom!
- 59:08Yes!
- 59:09Yeah!
- 59:09And I've just said, Oh, the 80s, cause he's doing coke.
- 59:12Fuck yeah, he is.
- 59:13Man, this is like the third time this has happened in this movie, too.
- 59:16I mean, it's like, what a trope.
- 59:18I'm like, okay, fine.
- 59:19But then there's that Awful scene that kind of comes next between Jeff
- 59:24Bridges and Rachel Ward where they, it's that awkward sexual tension that
- 59:28borderlines on sexual assault borderlines.
- 59:31You say it was cringy as she, Oh no, he a hundred percent sexually assaults her, but
- 59:36it turns out she's into the rough trade.
- 59:38So yeah.
- 59:39Rip my effing shirt off.
- 59:42I'm like, what?
- 59:43He's going full.
- 59:44Blake.
- 59:45Mel Gibson in a South Park episode.
- 59:47Like, Oh, twist my nipples.
- 59:48Oh, Oh, you'll never torture me.
- 59:50Ah, as he's like putting himself in a fucking iron maiden.
- 59:54Yeah.
- 59:55He's like tearing his shirt off and she's like screaming like for the cops.
- 59:58Like, and then like, they start crying.
- 1:00:02The writing at this point, I'm like, did they lose the plot entirely?
- 1:00:06Like, what is the point of this?
- 1:00:10The next morning, James Woods and Jessica, they're chatting on the
- 1:00:13beach and she's like, look, I'm not going to let me like, look, you're
- 1:00:16not going to get away from me.
- 1:00:17I'm going to live here forever.
- 1:00:17Nah, you know, whatever.
- 1:00:19Creepy bullshit.
- 1:00:20Yeah.
- 1:00:20And James Woods says, you ruined my life and I'm not going to lose you.
- 1:00:24And I'm like, again, the writing, I'm like, this doesn't make any sense.
- 1:00:28Is he on cocaine too?
- 1:00:29Probably jives at all.
- 1:00:32There's some really weird transitions at this point in the movie.
- 1:00:35Once we kind of hit that.
- 1:00:37Jake's palace to the next part of this when we're in the building
- 1:00:41and now it's turned into sneakers.
- 1:00:42Yeah, so it's Sunday night.
- 1:00:44At Nakatomi Tower.
- 1:00:46Jeff Bridges has the keys to Steve's office.
- 1:00:49First off, he starts off by running laps, of course.
- 1:00:51Because, you know, you want to get good and sweaty before
- 1:00:53you're about to do a B& E.
- 1:00:54So he goes to Kirsch's office and he's like looking through, breaks into a
- 1:00:58little thing, finds a bunch of files, but pulls out one that says, Fuck you, Terry.
- 1:01:02That was so funny.
- 1:01:04And I'm like Just leave.
- 1:01:05Wipe everything down that you've touched.
- 1:01:07Just fucking leave.
- 1:01:08Nope.
- 1:01:09Instead, he's like, I gotta go take a shit or something.
- 1:01:11Goes into the bathroom.
- 1:01:12Catches Kirsch in the shower.
- 1:01:13Dead, dead, dead.
- 1:01:14I was hoping to see a little Saul Rubinak taking a shower.
- 1:01:16Like, oh, what are you doing here?
- 1:01:18Slip at his head, you know.
- 1:01:20Awkward Benny Hill kind of death or something, right?
- 1:01:22Nope, no, he's just dead.
- 1:01:23Johnny on the spot security guard pops up and he's like, Surprise, motherfucker.
- 1:01:27Guess what?
- 1:01:28I owe James Wood some money, too.
- 1:01:29Jeff Bridges, like, shuts the door and, like, gets the gun from
- 1:01:32him and I guess knocks him out?
- 1:01:34But doesn't kill him.
- 1:01:36He's just never heard from again, even when, uh, Jeff Bridges
- 1:01:39apparently hides Kirsch's body.
- 1:01:41So the transition from that scene where like knocked out the security
- 1:01:44guard and he's like trying to move Kirsch's body to him pulling up at
- 1:01:48the ginger man or whatever in the car.
- 1:01:49And I'm like, are those bodies in the trunk of that Porsche?
- 1:01:53This is going to get really fun.
- 1:01:55Really quick.
- 1:01:56The frunk of a nine 11 was designed to take a.
- 1:01:59Full set of golf clubs.
- 1:02:00So if you fold a human the right way, it should fit in the front.
- 1:02:03Two humans, Eric.
- 1:02:05A Saul Rubenick and a security guard.
- 1:02:07He'll just carry him on his shoulders because nobody will notice in this movie.
- 1:02:11They'll notice him walking through the ginger man and
- 1:02:14hitting on Edie or whatever, yeah.
- 1:02:15Why does he pick up a dead body he hadn't touched?
- 1:02:18Cause then he could have just ran.
- 1:02:20Movie got a movie.
- 1:02:21As soon as you see the piece of paper that says, fuck you, Terry, you start
- 1:02:25dusting shit off and you fucking leave.
- 1:02:28He was wearing gloves.
- 1:02:29He was wearing gloves.
- 1:02:30If you're, okay, cool.
- 1:02:31Then you're done.
- 1:02:31You know what you do?
- 1:02:32Go to the ginger man, establish your alibi with Edie, fuck her brains out.
- 1:02:36And then guess what?
- 1:02:37You wake up the next morning.
- 1:02:39You're not a suspect.
- 1:02:40And maybe it is pretty sweet.
- 1:02:42I don't know.
- 1:02:42Your point, Steve.
- 1:02:43This is like the hundredth time in this movie where it's like,
- 1:02:46Jeff, Jeff, are you listening?
- 1:02:47Earth to Jeff, leave.
- 1:02:49Go do something else.
- 1:02:51Like, stop.
- 1:02:52Nope.
- 1:02:52He just keeps sending it.
- 1:02:54Scene after scene.
- 1:02:55Jeff, you're acting like a Baldwin right now.
- 1:02:57I need you to act like a Bridges.
- 1:02:58Okay, I need you to just be cool, dude.
- 1:03:01You don't need to use live ammo.
- 1:03:03So he goes to see Edie, who's Kirsch's secretary.
- 1:03:05Okay, cool.
- 1:03:05He's gonna like establish an alibi and you know, blah, blah, blah.
- 1:03:09Like, I've seen Murder, She Wrote.
- 1:03:10I know how this stuff happens.
- 1:03:11Nope.
- 1:03:11Instead, he's like, okay, so I got some bodies in the trunk.
- 1:03:14Kirsch is dead.
- 1:03:15I need you to break into his office and find these files.
- 1:03:17Otherwise, I'm going to be in super duper trouble.
- 1:03:20And she's so drunk at this point.
- 1:03:22She's like, wait, what?
- 1:03:23Kirsch is dead?
- 1:03:23What are you saying?
- 1:03:24I gotta get some coffee or something.
- 1:03:26Like, no, no, no time.
- 1:03:27I need you to tell me where his secret stash is.
- 1:03:30The treasure chest, she called it.
- 1:03:32I was like, what is happening now?
- 1:03:36We've got a treasure tip.
- 1:03:37We're on a hunt.
- 1:03:39And then Jeff Bridges is totally like gaslighting her.
- 1:03:40Like, Oh, you know what?
- 1:03:41They'll kill you too.
- 1:03:42Once this all breaks, they'll kill you too.
- 1:03:44And I'm like, no, they won't.
- 1:03:46They don't give a fuck about the secretary.
- 1:03:48Nope.
- 1:03:49Okay, so.
- 1:03:50We go back to Nakatobi Tower.
- 1:03:51They go back to the office, cause Edie's gotta go in and
- 1:03:55like, get the stash and whatever.
- 1:03:56Blah, blah, blah.
- 1:03:57And this is where we're introduced to star of the movie, Ted White,
- 1:04:01as security guard with Doug.
- 1:04:02And he's just the coolest motherfucker around.
- 1:04:04Like, I don't know what it is about this guy.
- 1:04:06Like, he'd be cool to have a beer with.
- 1:04:08He's a studman.
- 1:04:09So the Doberman sitting there over Edie's shoulder, just like,
- 1:04:13she's like, your dog bothers me.
- 1:04:15And I love how he delivers it just so deadpan.
- 1:04:18He's like, he's supposed to.
- 1:04:21Yeah, exactly.
- 1:04:22Like this motherfucker gets it.
- 1:04:24Right?
- 1:04:25You know, she's like, no, Jake told me to get here and get this stuff
- 1:04:28before the cops start showing up.
- 1:04:30But in order to get into the safe, like she turns the radio on, like
- 1:04:33it's like different things and then turns the dial and then it pops
- 1:04:37open a little door on the side.
- 1:04:38That was some James Bond shit right there.
- 1:04:40That was cool.
- 1:04:41Ring, ring, ring.
- 1:04:42Who is it?
- 1:04:43Security guy picks up.
- 1:04:44Oh, hey, Jake.
- 1:04:45Yeah, yeah, we're almost done.
- 1:04:46The girl's here getting all the stuff you wanted.
- 1:04:49You know, the papers that blah, blah, blah.
- 1:04:50And she like pulls the phone cord out of the wall or whatever and starts running.
- 1:04:54He's like, Hey, get your ass back here.
- 1:04:55And then Jeff Bridges comes out of left field and like starts fighting them.
- 1:04:59And he enters like Hans Gruber slick back hair and the
- 1:05:02leather jacket and everything.
- 1:05:03I'm like, Oh man, here we go.
- 1:05:05They tussle a bit.
- 1:05:06And then Edie ends up taking like a letter opener.
- 1:05:09Tussle.
- 1:05:09He punt kicks him in the balls.
- 1:05:11Field goal right between the legs.
- 1:05:13People tussle differently.
- 1:05:16But yeah, he grabs this letter opener and stabs a security guard's hand
- 1:05:20like into the door of the bathroom where he's like, ah, fuck, fuck, fuck.
- 1:05:24They run with the secret stash of papers.
- 1:05:26Jessica goes to talk to her mom.
- 1:05:29Yes.
- 1:05:29And enter another car into the equation.
- 1:05:32One of Tanya's favorites.
- 1:05:33Did you see it?
- 1:05:33No.
- 1:05:34You know what?
- 1:05:34I'm drawing a blank.
- 1:05:35It was a gold SL convertible Mercedes.
- 1:05:38I don't know.
- 1:05:39Like Rick drove a Magnum.
- 1:05:40Maybe I wasn't watching that part.
- 1:05:42Then again, this is me picking out cars.
- 1:05:44I may have fallen asleep while my meal was being served to me.
- 1:05:47Uh.
- 1:05:47I mean, generic white guy number one drives a Jag and
- 1:05:50Tommy drives a C4 Corvette.
- 1:05:52So I made a list of all the cars.
- 1:05:54As is tradition, as it should be for your podcast.
- 1:05:58Yeah, Jessica goes to see her mom and her mom's like, well, it's
- 1:06:00good to see you're in good health.
- 1:06:02And Jessica's instantly like, let me talk to my stepdad.
- 1:06:04I'm like, Why didn't you just ask for him?
- 1:06:07Have one of the guys handing out drinks or whatever, like, Hey, could you go
- 1:06:10tap Ben on the shoulder and tell him his stepdaughter is outside here?
- 1:06:12But anyway, we had the Ben, the stepdad, and she's basically like,
- 1:06:16look, Jake is doing some seedy shit, you know, blah, blah, blah.
- 1:06:19You're like, he's got all, all this stuff.
- 1:06:21He's making people do horrible stuff.
- 1:06:23He's going to blow up everything.
- 1:06:25This is where it sort of turns into Get Shorty, because they're like, Jeff Terry,
- 1:06:30whatever his name is, Jeff Bridges.
- 1:06:31He's got the goods, man.
- 1:06:33We got to get him because he's got the treasure chest.
- 1:06:34Okay, and I was hoping for another car chase scene at this point.
- 1:06:38Of course.
- 1:06:39Break it up a little bit, but no.
- 1:06:41You know, instead uh, we uh, get Ben going to see Jake at his place and he got all
- 1:06:45the goods on everybody and uh, you know, we, we gotta get this taken care of.
- 1:06:49Jessica has basically told him everything and basically screwed Jake
- 1:06:52over and Jake's like, look you dumbass.
- 1:06:54I work for him.
- 1:06:55I work for your stepdad.
- 1:06:57He's the one running shit and gets, like, 75 percent of the take on everything.
- 1:07:01You basically killed me, and I'm like, Yeah, that's
- 1:07:03exactly what she wanted to do.
- 1:07:04But she's like, What?
- 1:07:05No, I was just trying to get some help.
- 1:07:08And I'm like, She might be smart, or she might just be naive.
- 1:07:11I don't know.
- 1:07:11At this point, I'm like, Whatever.
- 1:07:13I don't care for her.
- 1:07:14That's when Jeff Bridges calls up Ben.
- 1:07:16He's basically like, Look, I got all this stuff.
- 1:07:18I don't want to fuck up your spot.
- 1:07:20I just want you to take care of Jake, because I hate that.
- 1:07:22Fucker and Ben's like, yeah, we could totally do that.
- 1:07:24Like, where do you want to do this exchange?
- 1:07:26How about the top of Weiler Canyon or what?
- 1:07:28You know, the scene from earlier, like, sure.
- 1:07:31Why not?
- 1:07:32So then we go to Weiler Canyon high atop the Mulholland view
- 1:07:36shelf overlooking LA or whatever.
- 1:07:38Jake ends up grabbing a gun from Tommy.
- 1:07:40Cause Tommy's there too.
- 1:07:41Cause Tommy's like Ben's right hand man or Jake's right hand man
- 1:07:44or was Jake's, but now Ben's cause Ben gonna kill Jake, whatever.
- 1:07:48Yeah, not only that it becomes a super awkward Mexican standoff where
- 1:07:52Jeff Bridges isn't even in the scene and he's talking to them from behind
- 1:07:56the trees and there's that terrible annoying electric guitar the whole time.
- 1:08:01And I'm like, what?
- 1:08:02Oh, it was a very bad cinematic.
- 1:08:05The optics of the whole thing.
- 1:08:07I was like, why did you guys choose to do it this way?
- 1:08:10And it wasn't even that like, Classic mobster scene where you've got an old
- 1:08:14Lincoln with some shoddy headlights and somebody's standing in the fog And it's
- 1:08:18the meeting of the mobsters and you know, somebody's gonna get shot No, it's
- 1:08:21jeff bridges sitting in a director's chair with a bullhorn off to the side.
- 1:08:25I was like, what is this?
- 1:08:27So we see him like running around and Tommy goes to get him.
- 1:08:30But then I don't know, he sneaks up on Tommy and gets the gun from him.
- 1:08:34Jake's like, fuck this grabs.
- 1:08:36Jessica puts the gun to her head and it's like to complete this game.
- 1:08:39Fucker.
- 1:08:40Just give me the stuff.
- 1:08:41And of course, Jeff Bridges was like, no, you know, try me.
- 1:08:44James was like, fuck you.
- 1:08:45I got nothing to lose.
- 1:08:46Push me.
- 1:08:47I dare you.
- 1:08:47I double dare you.
- 1:08:48And then Jessica, because she's Jessica in this movie, is like, No, don't do it!
- 1:08:53I love him!
- 1:08:54I'm like, you're not helping.
- 1:08:56You're not helping anyone right now.
- 1:08:59Pop, pop, pop, pop, pop, pop, pop, pop.
- 1:09:00Jessica ended up shooting Jake in the little tussle.
- 1:09:02No!
- 1:09:04That's two she shot in this movie.
- 1:09:06Yep.
- 1:09:07But, uh, of course, Ben's like, Yeah, don't worry, it's my stepdaughter,
- 1:09:09I'll, uh, take care of it.
- 1:09:10Goodbye, Jeff Bridges.
- 1:09:12I literally wrote down, Old white guy's gonna do what old white guy's gonna do.
- 1:09:17Like, he's gonna clean up the mess.
- 1:09:18He's got people on speed dial.
- 1:09:20He's gonna take care of business.
- 1:09:21Like, don't worry about it, guys.
- 1:09:23All right, I'm going to call up Kirsch in the morning.
- 1:09:25We'll get this all cleared up.
- 1:09:26Like, actually, hold on just a sec.
- 1:09:28Maybe you didn't get the memo.
- 1:09:30Like, it's not quite Monday morning.
- 1:09:32You're going to find out real quick.
- 1:09:34When she shot James Woods, then she like goes to like console
- 1:09:37and laying there on the ground.
- 1:09:38It's like, what the hell is this about?
- 1:09:40This bitch is evil.
- 1:09:41That's what this is about.
- 1:09:43She is mental.
- 1:09:43Yeah.
- 1:09:44Against all odds she's still alive.
- 1:09:46That's the way I look at this movie.
- 1:09:49So then we cut to six months later, where they're opening up
- 1:09:53the canyon, whatever that means.
- 1:09:54Building houses up there?
- 1:09:56Like, what are they doing?
- 1:09:57And this is where the quote for Mrs.
- 1:09:59Wyler comes in that I mentioned before.
- 1:10:01She says, it is sanctuary from the crime and crowding from the city below.
- 1:10:06Those are her exact words.
- 1:10:08And I'm like, Well, ain't that just a turn of events, right?
- 1:10:12She says it in the blood puddle still left by James Woods from six months ago.
- 1:10:16She's basically standing, yeah, where he was shot and I was like, wow, okay.
- 1:10:20You know, Jeff Bridges is there and Ben's like talking to him.
- 1:10:23He's like, I'm going to go talk to this fucker.
- 1:10:24I'm like, yeah, I heard you got some tryouts for some other teams.
- 1:10:27Yeah, I'm going to be playing for the Dolphins next year.
- 1:10:29I'm like, Lace is out.
- 1:10:31And he's like, yeah, I figure I got a couple more years and
- 1:10:34I'll quit on my own terms.
- 1:10:35Cool.
- 1:10:36Well, you're out of Jessica's life.
- 1:10:37And he's like, I don't know, man, you can't protect her forever.
- 1:10:40Cue the Phil Collins music and then roll credits for like five
- 1:10:44minutes of her Of her just sobbing.
- 1:10:45Yeah, Jessica just staring at the camera and sobbing and uh,
- 1:10:50Take I was getting awkward.
- 1:10:53How long are they gonna let this roll on?
- 1:10:56I felt like she was peering into my soul after a while.
- 1:10:59Like, it was creepy.
- 1:11:00Finally hits freeze frame after like three minutes.
- 1:11:03I'm like, that's because immediately after she's like, do we have to take or not?
- 1:11:06Like, cut!
- 1:11:07You know?
- 1:11:07This reminded me of a less good version of the end of Runaway.
- 1:11:11Yeah, Runaway where uh, Tom Selleck and the girl are kissing for like
- 1:11:15seven full minutes of credits with like fireworks going off in the background.
- 1:11:18It's uh, welding.
- 1:11:19There's a lot of sparks behind them.
- 1:11:21But yeah, guys, that's against all odds.
- 1:11:23How many Academy Awards do you think it won?
- 1:11:25None.
- 1:11:26Negative three.
- 1:11:26They took Jeff Bridges Academy Award away 30 years later.
- 1:11:31I'm sorry, we still remember.
- 1:11:33Never forget the Porsche 911.
- 1:11:35Exactly.
- 1:11:35Beautiful car.
- 1:11:36So would any of us recommend watching this movie?
- 1:11:38No, unless you're Jeff Bridges completionist, in which
- 1:11:42case you've already seen it.
- 1:11:43I liked the shots in Tulum except for the, you know, the
- 1:11:46fucking in the ancient ruins.
- 1:11:47But you know, that was, Oh, you mean especially the fucking in the ancient?
- 1:11:50Or I mean, yeah, I mean, yeah, just Google that shit.
- 1:11:52Just look up the car chase, the car chase.
- 1:11:54This isn't even like the best of James Woods.
- 1:11:58If he was allowed to go wild on this, it would have.
- 1:12:01Giving it an extra star.
- 1:12:03You're saying earlier, Izzy, how he's like a creep.
- 1:12:05There were certain parts where it really came out, but like you were
- 1:12:08saying, he didn't go full fledge with it to where I think it would've made
- 1:12:11his character much more sinister.
- 1:12:13But there were certain parts where like little things he said and like, look, it
- 1:12:15was like he come across as a major creep.
- 1:12:17What I recommend this.
- 1:12:18What is the other alternative?
- 1:12:21Not recommending this movie, I don't know, or recommending a
- 1:12:24better movie of similar bullshit.
- 1:12:27I mean, is it like this or The Stuntman?
- 1:12:29Oh, fuck yeah, Stuntman's a great movie.
- 1:12:32Cause then I recommend this one.
- 1:12:34Yes!
- 1:12:35Yes.
- 1:12:36Wow.
- 1:12:36Really compared to yes.
- 1:12:38I was waiting for this landmine to be tripped because the last time we got
- 1:12:42together, we talked about the stunt man and then I was so, so that's right.
- 1:12:46You were all wrong and hated it.
- 1:12:48I know.
- 1:12:48And Izzy corrected me and it was all good.
- 1:12:50Yeah.
- 1:12:51Yeah.
- 1:12:52I actually really liked this movie and I would watch it again because
- 1:12:56I think I missed some things now knowing what I know about it.
- 1:12:59And there's a special extra when we get to the, what did we learn?
- 1:13:03Which.
- 1:13:03I'll come full circle on this as to why I really enjoyed this movie and
- 1:13:07why I think I need to watch it again.
- 1:13:09That's what we call a tease, everybody.
- 1:13:11But hey, basically what I heard Eric say is this is his trading paint.
- 1:13:15Yeah.
- 1:13:17Oh, I will watch it one more time.
- 1:13:19Not nine more times like you did anybody interested in some
- 1:13:24fun facts about this movie?
- 1:13:26Yes, please.
- 1:13:26Oh, I don't know.
- 1:13:27Steve.
- 1:13:27Are they?
- 1:13:28Fun facts.
- 1:13:29Super fun facts.
- 1:13:30Cause fun, fun facts.
- 1:13:32Rotten Tomatoes, what do you think the critics thought of this movie?
- 1:13:36Like what percentage of them thought this was a good movie and recommend it?
- 1:13:4012 percent.
- 1:13:4042.
- 1:13:41I was thinking maybe like 22, 23.
- 1:13:43Do the critics think of this movie?
- 1:13:45They absolutely do.
- 1:13:45This was a big release in 84.
- 1:13:47All right, I am gonna go with my super generous 17 percent.
- 1:13:51Ladies and gentlemen, Against All Odds is rated fresh at
- 1:13:5664 percent with the critics.
- 1:13:58Oh.
- 1:13:58Eric, you win.
- 1:14:00I am the wrong woman.
- 1:14:01But, unfortunately, nobody gives a fuck about the critics.
- 1:14:04Oh, fuck those critics.
- 1:14:04What about the audience score?
- 1:14:06I'm thinking it's probably pretty high too.
- 1:14:08Probably in the 60s as well.
- 1:14:10You're crazy.
- 1:14:11Here's the problem.
- 1:14:12How many women watch this?
- 1:14:14Yeah, yeah.
- 1:14:15At least half , half of all women, or half of all votes were women.
- 1:14:19At least not half of all votes are women or just half of all women.
- 1:14:22Women.
- 1:14:22What I That's some solid science right there.
- 1:14:25Yeah.
- 1:14:2573%.
- 1:14:27I'm gonna say like 38.
- 1:14:28I'm gonna go with the funniest answer.
- 1:14:3069.
- 1:14:31Really nice.
- 1:14:33, Dan, you win 45% with the audience, which makes sense to me.
- 1:14:38Yeah, that feels more correct because, uh, 90% of chicks am I right?
- 1:14:42I mentioned earlier the budget.
- 1:14:43$13 million worldwide gross.
- 1:14:4621.7.
- 1:14:47I think the Phil Collin song made more money.
- 1:14:49That's a moneymaker.
- 1:14:50That's good with advertising.
- 1:14:52That I'd say that's a wash.
- 1:14:53Maybe it's a wash.
- 1:14:54Yeah.
- 1:14:55I mean, they got four bucks for me out of Voodoo.
- 1:14:57So I mean, to watch this thing, this movie is a remake.
- 1:14:59Yes.
- 1:15:00Thank you.
- 1:15:00What of 1940 sevens out of the past, a notable film noir starring Robert
- 1:15:06Mitcham, Kirk Douglas and Jane Greer.
- 1:15:10Anybody notice her name in the credits when it started?
- 1:15:12She's Mrs.
- 1:15:13Weiler.
- 1:15:14Yep, she's the mom.
- 1:15:16Oh!
- 1:15:17But she was the daughter in the original.
- 1:15:19Made a scant 37 years before.
- 1:15:21That was my super fun little teaser there.
- 1:15:23I loved finding out that this was a remake because it proves that even 40 years ago,
- 1:15:29remakes Sucked, but it also allowed me to go back and start watching the original
- 1:15:35movie, which is available for free on HBO max or max or whatever they're calling it.
- 1:15:39Now, I can see where they pulled some threads because of post
- 1:15:43war movie from the forties.
- 1:15:45Isn't going to have the same sort of cliches and these tropes that
- 1:15:48we're used to in the eighties.
- 1:15:49Wait, Kirk Douglas wasn't raw dog and Jane Greer in the ancient ruins
- 1:15:54of, I'm just going to say, uh, Anasazi tribal site or something.
- 1:15:59No.
- 1:16:01Yeah, exactly.
- 1:16:04But no, there are those threads of the stolen money and the runaway
- 1:16:08girl and all these kinds of things.
- 1:16:09And so I haven't completely finished watching it yet, which again, gives me
- 1:16:13incentive to watch the original and then go rewatch the remake with now a more
- 1:16:17discerning eye to see how close they did an approximation or as a reboot.
- 1:16:23of the original so that gives me that motivation to watch it at least one more
- 1:16:27time just to draw those parallels or to come to the conclusion that it actually
- 1:16:30sucks more than you initially think no but we are due for a third reboot so let's
- 1:16:35guess what they'll call the next one oh it'll be against all odds amenable star
- 1:16:39nicholas holt in the jeff bridges role god who's our new james woods oh army
- 1:16:46hammer fucking army hammer kevin spacey is the stepdad And Nicolas Cage is gonna
- 1:16:52try to find his way into this movie.
- 1:16:54Oh shit, Nicolas Cage is Jake.
- 1:16:56Yeah.
- 1:16:57Heck yeah, dude.
- 1:16:58You know that or he's Sully.
- 1:16:59They're fucking on top of the terracotta warriors in Xi'an in the People's
- 1:17:03Republic of China and then Nicolas Cage pops up and is like, Le jour!
- 1:17:09And you remember there's the like oldest human burial mounds.
- 1:17:14In the, all of North America are used for like tailgate parties for some college.
- 1:17:19Oh shit.
- 1:17:20But the most important part in our recasting of this film, of the same
- 1:17:23name for the third time, can we get Kid Creole and the unshaven coconuts
- 1:17:28back on stage for a reprisal?
- 1:17:31Yeah, played by Lou Bega.
- 1:17:33Mambo number five.
- 1:17:35Some unshaven French chicks.
- 1:17:37It doesn't have to be played by anyone.
- 1:17:39He's still alive.
- 1:17:40What?
- 1:17:40Yes.
- 1:17:40But he's no longer a kid.
- 1:17:42So he's got like granddaddy Creole or something like that.
- 1:17:44Right?
- 1:17:45August Darnell.
- 1:17:46He's still alive.
- 1:17:47Here you go, babe.
- 1:17:48If you want to keep your movie all in the U S in Louisiana, the native
- 1:17:52American mounds, AKA known as the Indian mounds date back to 11, 000 years ago.
- 1:17:58They're the oldest man made structure on the North American continent.
- 1:18:02They also happen to be just outside of LSU's.
- 1:18:06That sounds like an LSU thing for tailgate parties.
- 1:18:08LSU's stadium, and they are collapsing under the weight of the tailgate parties.
- 1:18:14There seems to be no plan in place to save them.
- 1:18:17There were 8, 000 mounds, but they destroyed most of
- 1:18:20them to build the LSU campus.
- 1:18:23Go Tigers!
- 1:18:24And that's, of course, go G E A U X, Tigers.
- 1:18:27Mm hmm.
- 1:18:27Hehehehehehe.
- 1:18:29The last little fun one I definitely want to get out there is, the movie
- 1:18:31was, of course, shot in Mexico, right?
- 1:18:33It was while Rachel Ward was on her honeymoon.
- 1:18:36Think about that for a second, because she had fantastic chemistry with
- 1:18:39her co star Jeff Bridges, where?
- 1:18:41That wasn't on film.
- 1:18:42And they had pretty torrid sex scenes.
- 1:18:44Quote, It was a particularly bizarre shoot for us.
- 1:18:47Luckily, her husband, Brian Brown, is also a wonderful actor and was very
- 1:18:51understanding, Jeff Bridges says.
- 1:18:53Mm hmm.
- 1:18:53So guys, what did we learn from Against All Odds?
- 1:18:57Ah, what did we learn?
- 1:18:59What did we learn, guys?
- 1:19:01Not getting that time of my life back.
- 1:19:03I learned that Samoyeds hate beach volleyball.
- 1:19:05That's true.
- 1:19:06I learned Mayan football rules are really different from American football.
- 1:19:11I don't know what I learned from this.
- 1:19:12Didn't you have a big revelation you were teasing earlier?
- 1:19:14It was, it was a remake.
- 1:19:16That was what I had learned.
- 1:19:18That was my big thing.
- 1:19:18That was your big revelation?
- 1:19:20That it was, okay.
- 1:19:21I thought I was holding that card to myself.
- 1:19:23Like, Oh, I did all this research.
- 1:19:26He worked so hard for that baby.
- 1:19:28You just blew it.
- 1:19:29You just blew it.
- 1:19:30Well, I guess I learned where the ginger man is officially, and it's not in LA.
- 1:19:36Well, guys, well, yeah, thanks for watching this movie with us.
- 1:19:39I mean, I'm sorry you guys didn't enjoy it as much as we did just by how insane.
- 1:19:44Oh, I didn't hate it.
- 1:19:46I mean, there's far worse things in that movie.
- 1:19:48There's a lot better things too.
- 1:19:52I enjoyed it.
- 1:19:53I love getting together with you guys to review movies.
- 1:19:55I don't know what we're going to do next time.
- 1:19:57This was a good, nobody seen it movie.
- 1:20:00So we can come at it fresh, completely unbiased and add some actors.
- 1:20:04That we like in it that we knew.
- 1:20:05So that made it more fun and all the factoids that go along with it.
- 1:20:09But for those of you that are listening to this, maybe the first time and never
- 1:20:13have heard of everything I learned for movies, Steven, is he tell everybody
- 1:20:16where they can learn about your show?
- 1:20:18Oh, well, of course you can find us on all the major podcatchers under
- 1:20:20everything I learned from movies.
- 1:20:22We watch bad to questionable movies and just basically explain
- 1:20:25like what we learned from them.
- 1:20:27Because movies have lessons.
- 1:20:28Yeah.
- 1:20:28There's lessons to be learned.
- 1:20:30And we also just love movies.
- 1:20:31So it's like, even if it's like.
- 1:20:32Some parts are cool and the rest of it's crap.
- 1:20:35We can kind of help with that.
- 1:20:36Oh, guys, we love movies.
- 1:20:38And we also talk about beer because we also like beer and
- 1:20:41our BJCP certified beer judges.
- 1:20:43Yeah.
- 1:20:45How can you reach us, Steve?
- 1:20:46Well, you can hit us up on Twitter, Facebook, and Patreon at EILFmovies.
- 1:20:50That's everything I learned from movies.
- 1:20:53But babe, can we find you on social media at all?
- 1:20:56Nope, I can't be found.
- 1:20:58Liar!
- 1:20:58Oh wait, yeah, you can find me everywhere at Untidy Venus.
- 1:21:02That's a goddess who's bad at housekeeping.
- 1:21:03You can find a bunch of my cool art, all kinds of stuff.
- 1:21:06I'm everywhere at Untidy Venus.
- 1:21:08Where can we find you guys?
- 1:21:09Man, I wish I had a catchy jingle like you guys.
- 1:21:11You guys got to learn to sing is a little during motorsports breaks.
- 1:21:15Hey, that's good.
- 1:21:16I'm going to use that.
- 1:21:17But for those of you listening to us on E I L F M or the first time,
- 1:21:22although we've gotten together many times over the last couple of years,
- 1:21:25we are available everywhere in the planet where good podcasts and rubbish
- 1:21:28ones like ours exist as well at grand touring motorsports or search.
- 1:21:33break, fix podcast.
- 1:21:34Our mission is to shed light on something we call the autosphere.
- 1:21:38Part of our major goal is to capture the living history of different people
- 1:21:43and expose that to some younger petrol heads out there that they want to learn
- 1:21:46how to become that person or how to get that job or how to do that thing.
- 1:21:49So we're always interested in car adjacent stories, or even talking
- 1:21:53about movies like this with a great.
- 1:21:55Car chase scene in it and picking out and doing a little bit of car spotting,
- 1:21:59but having a lot of fun along the way.
- 1:22:00So it's not your, you know, typical, you know, we're going to review
- 1:22:03the race show or talk about history on this date and in this place.
- 1:22:06And this time it's really a lot of fun and we love crossing over with Steven Izzy.
- 1:22:10So thanks for having us again.
- 1:22:11Thanks for having us.
- 1:22:13Yeah.
- 1:22:14If you're listening to this on Grand Touring Motorsports, like come hit
- 1:22:16us up and thank you all so much for putting up with our shenanigans.
- 1:22:19Then why don't we talk about that Jackie Chan racing movie,
- 1:22:22Thunderbolt or whatever.
- 1:22:23Yeah!
- 1:22:24We keep teasing it.
- 1:22:25Send it!
- 1:22:46You're the only one.
- 1:22:48Just walk away.
- 1:22:49Just watch you.
- 1:22:51You share the laughter and the pain.
- 1:22:54You share the tears.
- 1:22:56You're the only one.
- 1:23:13Who really knew me at all?
- 1:23:16So take a look at me now There's just an empty space And there's nothing
- 1:23:26left here to remind me Just the memory of your face Oh, take a look
- 1:23:37at me now There's just an empty space
