- Estie Insider Podcast: Welcome to the Estee Insider podcast, where skincare meets real life. We're your hosts, Chelsea, Jacqueline, and Rebecca. Three estheticians in three different time zones, obsessed with skin, business, and the beauty of connection. No topic is off limits. This is the unfiltered side of skin. Let's get into it. Rebekah: Welcome back. Hi. I'm losing I'm Jaclyn Kylie: Hi. Rebekah: I need my I need a fourth cup of coffee today. so today's episode we're gonna talk about AI. AI in aesthetics industry. Is AI going to replace us? Are you going to get all your skincare information from a robot? We are going to be out of jobs in a couple of years. Is that the case? I think there's a lot of conversation about this recently. Back when Jaclyn Kylie: Yeah. Rebekah: I went to the Bewell show in New York, there was actually classes. on AI and skincare and AI in the beauty industry. I didn't take it because I was working the floor, but I know that there's definitely discussion going around. I've seen more clients using it when it comes to skincare. I now that their ads integrated into things like Chat GPT, it's starting to recommend local people. So if you're if your SEO isn't up to date or not that great, yeah. Jaclyn Kylie: To an AIO? You need an AIO now? Rebekah: Chat GPT might not be recommending you. So, okay, quick story. I told my husband, I was like, okay, ask your chat GPT who in Southern Maine they should go see if you want an acne expert esthetician. So it Jaclyn Kylie: Mm-hmm. Rebekah: didn't even mention me. It mentioned all these other people. So he goes, Okay, well, how about mainly skincare? And she goes, wait, yeah, that's right. she's probably the first person I should have mentioned. She is this, this, this, and this. And then my husband took a picture. Jaclyn Kylie: God, such a people pleaser. Rebekah: My hus husband took a picture of me with sticking up my middle finger and goes, Yeah, she thinks that's bullish a bullshit answer. And chat kept apologizing to him. Like, my god, I'm so sorry. So so here is Chelsea: my gosh. Jaclyn Kylie: my god. Rebekah: here's the thing. I hate AI for the most part. Do I use it every once in a while? I think it's the downfall of our brains. but I've seen more clients use it and I don't think that we should be scared that clients are using it. I don't think that it's gonna replace us by any means. but I do think that we might have to work alongside it. and we just are gonna have to accept it. Yeah. Chelsea: Yeah. I think it's here to stay. I think it's here to stay and it's learning. I I think there's going you know, right now it's just like it's being used for everything and probably will continue to, but I do think that people are learning like, it's not always accurate. And now I feel like kinda how like social media is, now that there's so many ads and AI like in social media, people are like, I just want a real person. I want to talk to a real Rebekah: Yes. Chelsea: person. So I think there's Jaclyn Kylie: I want to talk to a real person. Rebekah: Yes. Chelsea: I think there's gonna be a wave. I think we're I think we're I don't think the wave has peaked yet. Rebekah: I've heard that like we are going to get to the point where real is gonna be a luxury. You know? It's gonna be a luxury. Jaclyn Kylie: Mm-hmm. Chelsea: Yes, yeah, I think so. Rebekah: People are gonna be and and I find myself steering away towards giving my business. If some if I go to a business page and they have a chat GPT flyer, I actually will look elsewhere. I'm sorry. And I know small business, it's free and they're using Chelsea: Yeah. Rebekah: it because it's free and they don't need to hire marketing, but I would rather you take a dry erase marker and write on a dry erase board come buy my bread or you know. So I and I there have b they're starting to do studies on this too, that people are starting to avoid certain businesses if they Chelsea: Yeah. Rebekah: can visually see that you are using AI. So Jaclyn Kylie: Yeah. I have a theory that so you know how social media, like this this whole era of technology and stuff has really made us less social, ironically, and kind Rebekah: Yeah. Chelsea: Uh-huh. Jaclyn Kylie: of like made us awkward and not want to, you know, talk to people if we don't have to or whatever. and it social media itself is so tiring, especially growing up with it, you know. our the kids now are like literally growing up with it at such a young age. But I think that we're gonna be so tired of this fake, you know, AI stuff, like everything's AI, AI, AI, that we're actually gonna become more connected because we're not gonna want to be looking on social media and seeing all this bullshit. And we're gonna wanna like talk to people face to face, go to an aesthetician face to face, go to a doctor face to face and like that kind of stuff rather Rebekah: Mm-hmm. Jaclyn Kylie: than continuously use it to like expand our business. Like I just feel like like Rebecca was saying, it's Giving us the ick. It's gonna give us the ick so much that we're actually gonna find ourselves not on social media a lot. That was my point. Like more, more in-person things happening, more. And even right now, before AI, like there's every TikTok session that I have where I'm just scrolling, they are talking about I'm trying to get a couple people together and I wanna go do this. with strangers and meet people and just build a community. And I just keep hearing build a community, build a community. And I'm in the same boat. Like I'm trying to build a community because I just feel like we're so disconnected. Like, yeah, you want to come in for an hour for your service, but then you want to just leave. And there's no like building this like, I don't know, d just this, yeah. Rebekah: No, it's like the human the humanization of of just anything is completely gone. Yeah. Jaclyn Kylie: We we want human connection again more than ever. And I really feel like so when we first started this episode, I was like, really like, no, it's gonna take over our jobs. Like I just know it. But now that you know, we talk about like how people are like getting ick with you know, seeing this AI shit and wanting to talk to a person, no. I do think it does. Rebekah: Not only that, like it sucks. Like I I was trying, I'm trying to figure out a schedule. Like we talked I'm trying to hire someone. I'm trying to figure out a schedule because I have Chelsea: Yes. Rebekah: one room where I can work and she can work. And Jaclyn Kylie: Yeah. Yeah. Rebekah: this stupid chat GPT, I'm like, okay, Chelsea: Yeah. Rebekah: she cannot work Mondays. Stop putting her Mondays. It is one room. It kept putting us on the same day, the same time. I'm like, no. And then Chelsea: Yes. Rebekah: it gave her. Jaclyn Kylie: It's getting stupider. Rebekah: It gave her a schedule and it said, Okay, this week would give her a total of twenty-four hours. And I added up the hours. I was like, Chat, that's fourteen hours. And she's Ha ha, you're right. My math was wrong. I'm like, Chelsea: Si Jaclyn Kylie: It keeps doing that. Rebekah: oopsie. No, it's it's not always right. And like it's so what is good, it it it recognizes Jaclyn Kylie: It's getting dumber. Rebekah: patterns, it can retain a lot of information, but it Chelsea: Yes, yes. Rebekah: can't when it comes to aesthetics, it can't physically touch the skin and see what's going on in the skin. It can't know what's going on in your life. Jaclyn Kylie: Do extractions, yeah. Rebekah: take into consideration your stress levels, like your your work, your relationships, your environment up it can't do all of that. So I Jaclyn Kylie: Yeah. Rebekah: am not nervous that it's gonna take my job. Jaclyn Kylie: But what about the skincare aspect? I feel like it's gonna take that aspect because people are gonna go on to chat and be like, Chat, I've got acne, I've got oily skin, I've got large pores, what do I use? Chelsea: Well, I think Rebekah: Then it it'll Chelsea: what we need to talk about, it'll refer things, it'll give suggestions. Like it's it's all about what's already out there. It's pulling from what's already there. So if something Rebekah: Yeah. Yes. Chelsea: is advertised what you're saying, like CEO or CEO, SEO, again, Rebekah: SEO, yeah. Jaclyn Kylie: AIO. Chelsea: I'm sh stroking out over here. It's fine. It's fine. if there's something that is like marketed heavily that there's you know, it's comes up, it's advertised heavily, it's going to pick that up and pull it. into your recommendations. It's not Jaclyn Kylie: Yeah. Chelsea: it doesn't actually know what is it a good product or not. It's just grabbing information. Rebekah: And yeah, and it's not taking into account the full the Chelsea: Yes, yeah. Rebekah: full story of you. And that's what Jaclyn Kylie: Picture. Yeah. Rebekah: we do is we put together everything. It's not just throwing a skincare product at someone. You know, it's taking into Jaclyn Kylie: Yeah. Rebekah: account their medications, their lifestyle, their stress levels, their pooping schedule. literally Jaclyn Kylie: Ya Rebekah: chat is it's it is like you it's pulling information from different websites, you know, and that's what I would do before I was an aesthetician. I would go into Ulta and I was dealing with breakouts, I'd pull anything off the shelves that said. Chelsea: Right. Yes. Rebekah: acne clearing, blemish clearing. Chelsea: Yeah. Rebekah: I was my own Chad GPT and it sucked because nothing would help my skin. So I don't I'm not nervous about that. I mean it might curate some skincare routines for some people and it might work, but for people who really need more help, I don't think that it's gonna be super successful. Jaclyn Kylie: What about other AI platforms? Cause I feel like chat is actually getting stupider by the updates. it's like Rebekah: It's so dumb. so dumb. Jaclyn Kylie: it was it was really I felt like it was really smart at the beginning. And then it's like, wait, let's let's like dumb it down and throw people for a loop and just waste people's time. Rebekah: Yes. Jaclyn Kylie: and then but clot and pl perplexity and those platforms where they're more business oriented where they you know, create you know, documents and all these things for businesses, do we think that they're smarter than Rebekah: I don't I don't know if I've ever heard of any of those, so I can't talk to that. Jaclyn Kylie: okay. Chelsea: I haven't I have Claude. I don't really use Claude. I just Claude. Claude. It's Rebekah: Claude, he sounds French. Who's what does Claude do? Jaclyn Kylie: I know Collado Chelsea: Claude is a is AI. It's just like it's just a different like chat GPT company. There's and then there's Gemini. Gemini is Google, right? Yes. Yeah. Rebekah: I do know Gemini's like Google, right? Yeah. Okay, I do know that. Chelsea: So Claude is. Jaclyn Kylie: Guys. Rebekah: I think that like it's really beneficial. Like my doctor uses it to like basically it curates their own patient notes. So it's he Jaclyn Kylie: Yeah. Rebekah: clicks a button Chelsea: Yes. Rebekah: and it takes our conversation into account and then it summarizes it into patient notes. I think that Chelsea: Yep, yes, yes. Rebekah: is super useful. It is it is helping managing his time better and it we could Chelsea: Yes. Yep. Rebekah: probably use that too with clients. I think there's definitely ways that we could use it. I think it's great for running numbers, brainstorming promotions. Yeah. Chelsea: For sure. Yeah. I think it's I think it can be time saving. I think if it I what I use it for is, you know, I'm running my CW social media and collective social media, and I have to have that organized. So it had me come up or I had it help me come up with a schedule of like, cause I want to be posting two times a day, at least on collective. So it's like, okay, this is this is when Natalie's gonna post, this is when Leah's gonna post, and then I have it helped me come up with ideas like you know I'll have it brainstorm ideas and then I'm like yeah I could do this with that idea and I feel like I'm using it but I'm putting my own information and and ideas into it or like for a carousel I can get really wordy. I I can I mean you guys know this I don't shut up but it's like I can type out something and then I'll put it into chat GPT and I'm like condense this and make this shorter. Rebekah: Yes. Yes. Jaclyn Kylie: Yeah, yes. Rebekah: That's I use that too. Chelsea: So it's like I'm Yes. Yes. Yeah. But Jaclyn Kylie: I think it's it's good for social media and like planning, condensing and yeah, organizing thoughts. Chelsea: it's not just me like, hey, make me a carousel on acne and then I just copy and paste that. Because that's not that's not my idea. That's so that Jaclyn Kylie: Yeah. Rebekah: Right. Yeah. Chelsea: that's what I avoid. But I know. I feel like it's like you have to s you have to stay up on it. You have to we I don't think we can just totally avoid and resist it. But it's Jaclyn Kylie: Yeah. We have to yeah, Chelsea: I know. And I Jaclyn Kylie: take it. Chelsea: and I think educating people too. It's like, Hey, this is this is not like you're a little person on your phone in your pocket that you should live by. Yeah. Rebekah: Right. That's gonna tell you that yeah. And Jaclyn Kylie: Yeah. Did yeah. Rebekah: it's gonna give you a correct skincare routine. Yeah. Jaclyn Kylie: Guys, speaking on speaking on that burning question, this is a controversial question in my friend group. Chelsea: No. Jaclyn Kylie: Is your chat a girl or a boy? Mine's a boy. Rebekah: Mine's a girl and I call her a bitch all the time. Chelsea: I think I think mine's a boy 'cause when I play when I you can listen to it audio, it's a man. And I'm like, Jaclyn Kylie: It is. Rebekah: you how do you do that? Chelsea: So if you Jaclyn Kylie: my god, that's Chelsea: a little speaker icon, yes, it'll Rebekah: read aloud. Read aloud? Chelsea: it'll read it to you. Rebekah: Yeah, I would treat these as spam scam emails and absolutely not click the view and test flight button. I asked if something was a spam email. Jaclyn Kylie: Wait, wait, Chelsea: So yours is a girl. Yeah. Jaclyn Kylie: Rebecca, did you yours a girl, did you ever say like, hey girl, what's up girl? Or you're such a like what do you Rebekah: I say hey girl a lot. How do I stop it? okay. Yeah, I've I've I've said hey girl or like don't be a bitch or something like that. Jaclyn Kylie: Okay, so that's why she's a girl. Probably. Chelsea: So see, this is mine. Yes. These two episodes are a great pairing because the first one can be opinion heavy and spicy. Hey chat. Rebekah: Nice nice voice. Jaclyn Kylie: Okay, let me let me let me show my chat. Let me show it how he sounds. mine? The closest real book to what Chelsea: yours is English. Jaclyn Kylie: I mocked up is the Kinfolk home. It's currently about twenty five dollars at Target, and the neutral editorial look is perfect for your black shelves. Landon flat. Put the black reef. Chelsea: He's from London. that's weird. Rebekah: Why is Harry Potter Jaclyn Kylie: Harapotta. No, he's he's he's got yeah. I I I've never Rebekah: I like that. Jaclyn Kylie: changed I've never said like, hey, are you a a Chelsea: Weird. Jaclyn Kylie: guy or girl? None of that. So it's weird. But yeah, no. My friends Rebekah: British man. Interesting. Jaclyn Kylie: get get triggered Rebekah: Okay. Jaclyn Kylie: by that. so I but I think you gotta you're you know, you gotta refer to it as something, not it. Make it I know Rebekah: You okay, well no, you can refer to to to it as it. It doesn't have feelings, Jacqueline. It does Jaclyn Kylie: 'Cause then if you rely on it too much, Chelsea: 'Cause it's it's not a real person. Jaclyn Kylie: it's not a real person. well, yeah. Rebekah: So yeah, we definitely have to keep up on it, especially since now they're starting to recommend local places because of being integrated with ads and Google and all that stuff, which is just like one more thing we have to worry about. But we gotta do it. Jaclyn Kylie: your businesses with websites. Update your AIO. Get an AIO in the back back end for all Rebekah: What is that? Jaclyn Kylie: the small business. It's the new version of search engine opinion. Yeah. Chelsea: S of SEO. It's like what what a poll for AI. You know Jaclyn Kylie: And doing Rebekah: How do I do Jaclyn Kylie: that, I had Caleb's friend do it for me. He was doing a page for me and he's like, and I'll make sure to do the AIO in the back, just like how they do the SEO in the back. So you can just get, you know, I mean, Dope Magic Co. can can probably do that. Rebekah: Yeah. Jaclyn Kylie: And or just I mean, I can give you Caleb's friends information and he can just quickly do it for you or whatnot. but I was found shortly after that. I had a client, he was I said, How'd you find me? He goes, you were the top three that chat recommended to me Rebekah: Right. Jaclyn Kylie: and I was like, Boom. So Rebekah: Hm. Cause a lot of people I find I find I do use chat more than Google now. I do. And I find that people Right, Jaclyn Kylie: But it's still important to have Google, yeah. Rebekah: but people are using it like Google. So if they're wondering, you know, where can I get an acne facial in Southern Maine, I would want my name to pop up. So all right, one thing to add to the list. Chelsea: Yeah, you wanna show up. Yeah. Yeah. Some something Jaclyn Kylie: Yeah. Chelsea: something that a different AI perspective. What I'm thinking that we will see with probably more so with like products that are coming out is like AI before and afters. And like, Rebekah: Ugh of course. Chelsea: you know, I hate to say this, but you know, you know there's gonna be aestheticians who are starting out. And they just Rebekah: Yeah. Chelsea: whip up a before and after acne. Jaclyn Kylie: Won't it say AI generated? Rebekah: Not always. Chelsea: Not always. I feel like it's not Jaclyn Kylie: I thought it does. Chelsea: I feel like it's not super accurate. Rebekah: Yeah. Chelsea: But I did hear that even if you design something on Canva, if you like remove the background, say you put like a real picture on Canva and you're making a a post or whatever and you use like the background remover or whatever, it will it Rebekah: Yeah. Chelsea: will say AI generated. Mm-hmm. There's like weird Rebekah: Really? Yeah. Yeah. Chelsea: it's picking up on it's gonna say everything's AI, I think at some point. Jaclyn Kylie: Well, I feel like that's a glitch in this system and they need to fix that. Chelsea: I think it's gonna go. Yeah. So that's what, you know, a new product launches. And I think before it's like you could tell if something was AI generated because it's like too perfect looking. But now what I I think AI can show Jaclyn Kylie: Too good. Chelsea: it's showing after, but it's still gonna show a little scarring, it's still gonna show pores, it's gonna show texture. I think it's really good at making like the skin look realistic. Jaclyn Kylie: Yeah. Rebekah: Yeah. Chelsea: And then people are gonna see these and be like, I think you're gonna see it with weight loss. I mean, I think we already Jaclyn Kylie: Mm-hmm. Chelsea: do. I think we already you know, all these different treatments and surgeries and that's the part where it's just gonna yes. Jaclyn Kylie: Well it's like Photoshop when Photoshop came out, like, you know, that was a thing where it's like, let's Rebekah: Yeah. Jaclyn Kylie: blur all the the pores on the face so that this cream looks like yeah. So I feel like we're Chelsea: Yes, yeah, Jaclyn Kylie: going through that one again. Chelsea: yeah. Rebekah: I mean, I feel like a geriatric because I get duped from AI all the time, like online. I see a Jaclyn Kylie: Ha ha ha. Chelsea: I don't know. Rebekah: cute like animal or baby video and then I go I'm like, my gosh, that's so cute, Matt. Look at this. And then I look at the comments Jaclyn Kylie: I know. Rebekah: and people are like, That's clearly AI. And I'm like, I didn't didn't realize. Sorry. Chelsea: Like, never mind. I know there's Jaclyn Kylie: I literally started crying at a video and then realized it was AI. Rebekah: Yeah. Ugh. Chelsea: There's these re it's like a it's making fun of it, but it's like there's all these reels where it's like when my mom asks me if this video's AI and so it's like a guy handing the phone and then you watch the and it's like a deer off a diving board. Rebekah: That's me. my god, how cute. Chelsea: Like yeah I'm like, he's showing off his tricks. Rebekah: Yeah. Chelsea: I know, I know. And it it makes me it's like, what are my kids gonna cause I feel like it's like we think we know where it's going and then stuff comes out that just throws me for a loop and I'm like, how do was that even created? So it's like what are my kids gonna at some point. Rebekah: Yeah. I know. I d I hope that my kids are able to use their brains and like especially in college when they're gonna be on their own and writing papers and stuff. I hope because in my mind I'm like, I if I had Chat GPT when I was in college and in high school, I definitely would have used it to help me write papers. Like and I wouldn't so I'm wondering how Chelsea: Totally. Totally. Jaclyn Kylie: Yeah. That's the scary part. Rebekah: education is gonna Chelsea: I know. I I wonder, I wonder if it will turn into, you know, I don't know how they would do it, but like more of a in person, like verbal test. Like, okay, we're gonna Rebekah: Yeah. Chelsea: sit down, I'm gonna ask you some questions, you're gonna answer them verbally, and Rebekah: Yeah. Chelsea: that well, that's how we'll test what you know. I d I just wonder if it's gonna have to change. I don't know. Or they're gonna Rebekah: I don't know. It's good. Chelsea: come up with software that's gonna detect it, but I I I don't know. Yeah. Rebekah: That detects it. Which I think they have. But I don't know. Terrif terrifying. So it's like at Chelsea: I know. But then you know what? I it at the same time, like even my s my clients who are in college, like the stuff that my kids have to do in school and the stuff that I hear my client like there is so much busy work and wasted time on these like stupid projects and essays that I'm like so Rebekah: You're like, maybe you should Jaclyn Kylie: Yeah. Rebekah: use Chat GPT. Save your time. Yeah. Chelsea: Yeah, yeah, I'm like, Yes, this is a stupid assignment. I don't know. So it I don't know. You just don't know how what direction it's gonna go. Jaclyn Kylie: Yeah. Rebekah: Yeah. Well I think that like Chelsea: It's like you have this technology and then you have humans that are using it and you don't know how what the humans are gonna do with it. That's Jaclyn Kylie: But it's yeah, it's also like I d I do appreciate not having growing up with AI because I actually had to learn and, you know, like do my own research and now with AI it's just so much easier for AI to just do it. Rebekah: I think that like the it can replace parts of us, but it will never Jaclyn Kylie: Yeah. Rebekah: replace the human factor. And I think that with Jaclyn Kylie: Still stupid. Rebekah: the trend, like you said, like I think the trend is gonna go the other way when people are gonna start wanting that human connection and actually seeking Chelsea: Yes. Rebekah: it out. So I don't think that like it, I don't think that it's gonna replace our jobs and AI's never gonna be able to pause it like I can. Okay. So Jaclyn Kylie: Okay. Chelsea: I I think Jaclyn Kylie: Okay, period. Chelsea: I I what I hope and maybe this is I hope that our generation is vocal about what people need is human connection. I don't think kids will recognize that that's what they need because Rebekah: Yeah. Chelsea: so what I fear is that, you know, they increasingly are getting lonely because they're on devices all the time, but then they start it's like, I'm so lonely. then I need alcohol to not feel bad or I need drugs. You know, I j you can s if they don't understand Rebekah: Yeah. Yeah. Jaclyn Kylie: Mm-hmm. Chelsea: that it that they need human connection, so maybe our generation needs to talk about it. I gotta get my I Jaclyn Kylie: Yeah. Chelsea: gotta get my kids off their phones. I gotta get off their like I gotta teach so they Rebekah: Well, I mean my daughter started my daughter started kindergarten. They get iPads in kindergarten. Jaclyn Kylie: That's insane and sick. Chelsea: I know. I know. Mine all have their yeah. I know. Isn't it crazy? It's crazy. Yes, yep. All my kids have their Rebekah: They don't g they don't have textbooks. They have iPads and then in in second grade they graduate to laptops and they don't have textbooks. Chelsea: all my kids have their school laptops. Rebekah: Yeah. Chelsea: It drives me crazy. Jaclyn Kylie: That's sick. Chelsea: It drives me crazy. Rebekah: Yeah. Chelsea: And you know what's interesting is my youngest Rudy, who's eleven, he he he has very poor handwriting. And I think it's because he is not I think Rebekah: Yes. Chelsea: part of it is him as a kid, but I think they're not. Writing. They're on their typing. Yes. Yeah. cur yeah, cursive's long gone. Yeah. Jaclyn Kylie: Mm mm. I've never thought of that, the handwriting thing. Cursive is gone. Yeah. Goodbye, Rebekah: Right. They're on their computer constantly. Yeah. I Jaclyn Kylie: yeah. Rebekah: actually it's arriving today. I ordered a like to teach my kids how to tell time on an actual analog clock because they're not teaching them that anymore. So Chelsea: Yes, yes. They don't learn it. No. Jaclyn Kylie: Good. Rebekah: I I I asked that this weekend because they were looking at my watch and they were like, How can you tell what time it is? Because I'm not wearing my Apple Watch, I'm wearing an actual watch. And I'm like, Chelsea: Yep. Yep. Rebekah: we cannot be I'm ordering. We're Chelsea: I know. Rebekah: we're gonna learn, kids. So well, thanks for Jaclyn Kylie: Yeah. Chelsea: I know. I know. I get it. Rebekah: discussing, you know, all this. lovely changes and technology that's always changing and we have to deal with it. But we can never replace our hands with AI. That's right. We'll never be bored. Jaclyn Kylie: And we'll never be bored. Chelsea: Nope. Nope. Rebekah: and stop using chat GPT flyers to market your business. I hope Jaclyn Kylie: Please and thank you. Rebekah: that you have a great day. Bye. Jaclyn Kylie: Bye bye. Chelsea: See you next time.
