- 0:00Speaker 1: Am Spruce Ha much from Hate said, a new single
- 0:03Speaker 1: is dropping the first of May this Friday, Say what
- 0:06Speaker 1: you Want out on all platforms, so get on it
- 0:09Speaker 1: and check it out.
- 0:10Speaker 2: Fantastic brother, thanks for joining us this evening.
- 0:13Speaker 3: Thanks for having me mate, good to be back.
- 0:15Speaker 2: Pleasure to say, as you say, Hat said, release your
- 0:18Speaker 2: new singles Say what you Want this Friday, May the first.
- 0:21Speaker 2: So how are you feeling?
- 0:23Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 0:23Speaker 3: Good? This one's a banging one.
- 0:25Speaker 1: This one it's a bit heavier and faster than what
- 0:27Speaker 1: we've done before and be more in your face, a
- 0:30Speaker 1: bit more punk rock as well, so.
- 0:31Speaker 3: Yeah, it's a good feeling. We've had Dave.
- 0:33Speaker 1: Leslie jump on board and do some guitar work on
- 0:36Speaker 1: there for us as well, and Rusty produced it as usual.
- 0:39Speaker 3: So yeah, I've.
- 0:40Speaker 2: Got the digital releases Friday. You made the first. But
- 0:43Speaker 2: then the music video doesn't come out to May the fifteen,
- 0:45Speaker 2: So is there a reason why staggering in or music videos?
- 0:48Speaker 2: It's already none.
- 0:50Speaker 3: Of the means if you're as ready. It is all recorded.
- 0:52Speaker 1: We all did it in house with ourselves, smel and
- 0:54Speaker 1: everybody had a bit of a go at filming, but
- 0:57Speaker 1: just to let the song brief for a couple of
- 0:59Speaker 1: weeks and then be more excited for with the launch
- 1:03Speaker 1: of the view Clippers that are dropping all at once.
- 1:05Speaker 1: We like to get the most out of our all leases.
- 1:08Speaker 1: You know.
- 1:09Speaker 2: It's a smart idea, bro, because, like, people spend so
- 1:12Speaker 2: much time on the music videos these days, and they're great,
- 1:15Speaker 2: but when they come out, people are just watching watching
- 1:17Speaker 2: the music video and they're not actually taking in the
- 1:20Speaker 2: music so much. So if you released the song first,
- 1:22Speaker 2: people listen to that, they like it, and then they
- 1:24Speaker 2: check it out when the music video comes and it's
- 1:26Speaker 2: getting a proper run.
- 1:27Speaker 1: Yeah, that's good. Let everything breathe. They have its own space.
- 1:30Speaker 1: Before you know, you overflow everybody's mind and.
- 1:34Speaker 3: Vision with everything.
- 1:35Speaker 1: It's you know, these days, there's so much coming out
- 1:38Speaker 1: every day.
- 1:39Speaker 2: Yeah, people's attention spans are getting smaller and smaller.
- 1:42Speaker 1: Yeah, that's why this song's only two minute, twelve seconds.
- 1:45Speaker 2: Smart man, you touched on it a bit sad. It's
- 1:48Speaker 2: a good, heavy and faster, but dive into song a
- 1:50Speaker 2: bit deeper for us musically, until you're gone for this
- 1:53Speaker 2: time around.
- 1:57Speaker 1: Well, we went on to write a song, or when
- 1:59Speaker 1: we write songs, it's never really about trying to create
- 2:04Speaker 1: a certain anything, bible or whatever it may be. Just
- 2:08Speaker 1: usually they just come out and we just if it
- 2:10Speaker 1: sounds good, the riff's good, and every starts meshing with
- 2:13Speaker 1: we just go forward with it. And that was just
- 2:15Speaker 1: a riff I brought to a rehearsal probably now a
- 2:18Speaker 1: year ago really when we're first sort of working on it,
- 2:20Speaker 1: and it came together pretty quickly, like most of our
- 2:22Speaker 1: songs are generally pieced together within one rehearsal sort of thing,
- 2:26Speaker 1: you know, so say it was always the same thing,
- 2:29Speaker 1: and then today it puts the lyrics and me, you know,
- 2:32Speaker 1: do what we've got to do and make it happen.
- 2:33Speaker 3: So there's no real format we have. We don't.
- 2:36Speaker 1: I don't think I'm going to write a song like
- 2:38Speaker 1: the Food Fighters or Sabbath or anything like. Just usually
- 2:42Speaker 1: my rifts come out when I've just set up my
- 2:44Speaker 1: guitar and I'm tuning it and i'm playing it in.
- 2:47Speaker 1: I'm sitting on my work band tuning it in, playing
- 2:49Speaker 1: and just getting it ready for the gig, and a
- 2:51Speaker 1: riff will come and press record on my phone, put
- 2:54Speaker 1: the rift down forget about till the.
- 2:56Speaker 3: Next rehearsal, bring it a go. How about this? So yeah, the.
- 3:02Speaker 2: Pressure really says that it's a song for people who
- 3:04Speaker 2: have been gaslit or misrepresented in a relationship, which is
- 3:08Speaker 2: pretty much all of us, bro, But can you elaborate
- 3:10Speaker 2: on that for us?
- 3:11Speaker 3: Have been hard for me to laborape because I write
- 3:13Speaker 3: the lyrics.
- 3:14Speaker 1: But it's kind of about just, you know, people misress
- 3:18Speaker 1: presenting you and saying things behind your back and making
- 3:21Speaker 1: you seem like you're this monster or whatever it may be,
- 3:25Speaker 1: And it's just sticking through to yourselves and your beliefs
- 3:27Speaker 1: and just moving forward and doing the best you can.
- 3:30Speaker 1: You know, just leave it all behind you and be strong. Ye.
- 3:35Speaker 2: You mentioned before that you've got the legendary Dave Leslie
- 3:38Speaker 2: on guitar playing on the song, right, how maybe he's
- 3:41Speaker 2: a busy man. How did you spare some of his time?
- 3:44Speaker 1: That was all because of Rusty? He mentioned. When we're
- 3:48Speaker 1: in the studio and we recorded these, this whole bunch
- 3:52Speaker 1: of songs that we're doing, and this song particularly, Russy
- 3:55Speaker 1: goes we need something on this, and he goes, I
- 3:58Speaker 1: think we need Dave Leslie bringing on and bringing on
- 4:01Speaker 1: his big fan of his and grew up listening to
- 4:04Speaker 1: his music, So it was yeah, it was just and
- 4:07Speaker 1: I'd already known him for a few years now as well,
- 4:09Speaker 1: and just to be able to be in the studio
- 4:11Speaker 1: with him and to play one of my songs was like, yeah,
- 4:14Speaker 1: it was like big tick box for me. I don't
- 4:18Speaker 1: really have a bucket list, but it's probably one of
- 4:20Speaker 1: the things.
- 4:22Speaker 2: Like you say, it's not only a great guitarist, but
- 4:24Speaker 2: he's a bloody awesome human being as well.
- 4:26Speaker 1: And here he's such a good character, such an easy
- 4:29Speaker 1: guy to get along with, and good fun having drink
- 4:32Speaker 1: with him too.
- 4:33Speaker 2: I remember a band I was rid down when Downbury
- 4:35Speaker 2: lives once and we borrowed one of his guitarians off him,
- 4:38Speaker 2: and he came and picked it up and took it
- 4:40Speaker 2: home for receive, like we didn't even have to drop
- 4:41Speaker 2: it off. Actually at the end of the night, favor.
- 4:49Speaker 4: Legend.
- 4:50Speaker 2: Does someone like that actually bring to the song? Like,
- 4:52Speaker 2: do you do they write their own parts for it
- 4:54Speaker 2: or do you sort of give him a nudge in
- 4:56Speaker 2: the right direction.
- 4:58Speaker 1: Na, We let him go, just played the song to him,
- 5:03Speaker 1: just you know, spoke about the chords and stuff, what's
- 5:05Speaker 1: going on, and then press recording and he.
- 5:08Speaker 3: Just did his magic.
- 5:13Speaker 2: Three times and off he went.
- 5:15Speaker 1: Yeah, he makes things. He makes things better pretty easily.
- 5:20Speaker 2: Speaking of legends, maybe you're again you've worked with great
- 5:24Speaker 2: Rusty from Electric Mary in the Producers chair Mate, Like,
- 5:28Speaker 2: not too many people actually familiar with the work that
- 5:30Speaker 2: a producer does, but they're quite valuable when it comes
- 5:33Speaker 2: from overall.
- 5:35Speaker 1: Yeah, we've been working with him. Oh, I have been
- 5:37Speaker 1: working with him since twenty twenty one. I think it
- 5:41Speaker 1: was sort of met up with him and stuff. So
- 5:43Speaker 1: it's been a pretty long friendship now. And here the
- 5:46Speaker 1: stuff he's taught me with writing and structuring and even
- 5:50Speaker 1: the mixes and what to listen for and just has
- 5:54Speaker 1: made us all better songwriters. And he even says that,
- 5:56Speaker 1: you know, our music gets better every time we bring
- 5:58Speaker 1: him a song.
- 5:59Speaker 3: So and this bunch of songs.
- 6:01Speaker 1: He didn't really do a lot of mixing around, and
- 6:05Speaker 1: you know, like when we did heartbreak Up, we brought
- 6:08Speaker 1: him a whole heap of songs and he goes, that's shit,
- 6:10Speaker 1: that's good, that shit, And we came back a couple
- 6:12Speaker 1: months later with three bits of other songs to make
- 6:15Speaker 1: one song. So that was all his idea. But so
- 6:18Speaker 1: now that we've been working with him, he's still you know,
- 6:21Speaker 1: he massages it a little bit here and there, but
- 6:23Speaker 1: it's got to a point where it's we've become a
- 6:26Speaker 1: lot better because of him. So really good to work with.
- 6:29Speaker 1: So yeah, it's been a joys And he's one of
- 6:31Speaker 1: my heroes too, so to be able to work alongside
- 6:34Speaker 1: of him and have him as my mentor and I'll
- 6:36Speaker 1: ring him all the time and have a chat and
- 6:37Speaker 1: ask him questions and send him just riffs and stuff
- 6:40Speaker 1: and say what do you think? So it's yeah, it's
- 6:42Speaker 1: good to have someone with that knowledge and that experience
- 6:46Speaker 1: to bounce off all the time.
- 6:47Speaker 3: So that's been great.
- 6:49Speaker 2: And I remember I was talking with Alice Cooper once
- 6:51Speaker 2: and he was talking about music in general and he said,
- 6:53Speaker 2: anyone out there listening, kids, he said, when you've got
- 6:56Speaker 2: a producer, fucking listen to him because that's.
- 6:59Speaker 1: The airport exactly listening. Don't have an ego, you know,
- 7:04Speaker 1: Like when he said to me, let's get Dave Leslie
- 7:06Speaker 1: and I was just like, hell, yeah, you can rewrite
- 7:09Speaker 1: almost and watch.
- 7:17Speaker 2: It doesn't come out for a couple of weeks, mate,
- 7:18Speaker 2: But can you give us a bit of a hint.
- 7:20Speaker 2: What we're going to get with that.
- 7:21Speaker 1: Well, this one's or studio footage of recording this bunch
- 7:26Speaker 1: of songs. So there's there's a cameo Dave Leslie, there's Roastery,
- 7:30Speaker 1: and there Brend who records mixed for us so in
- 7:33Speaker 1: the band. So it's just a just a vibe of
- 7:36Speaker 1: being in the studio and crowding music together. So yeah,
- 7:38Speaker 1: it's a pretty cool little I suppose, I don't know what.
- 7:43Speaker 3: Do you call it?
- 7:44Speaker 1: That's a great word for the English.
- 7:52Speaker 2: Speak. So what you want follows on from you last thing,
- 7:57Speaker 2: We're rising up Above, which came out in March. So
- 8:00Speaker 2: they stand alone singles, are they part of the album? Picture?
- 8:03Speaker 1: Uh, there's going to be an EP released at the
- 8:05Speaker 1: end of the year. So the first two we've got
- 8:08Speaker 1: another two three more songs coming so by I think
- 8:13Speaker 1: October is the plant. We're going to do another release
- 8:16Speaker 1: in August and then I think I could be wrong
- 8:20Speaker 1: with those times, but it's something like that. But the
- 8:23Speaker 1: the end of the year is going to be two
- 8:25Speaker 1: at once with the five, so the two releases on
- 8:27Speaker 1: the October with the EP as well, so it's going
- 8:29Speaker 1: to be a secret.
- 8:29Speaker 2: Track not so secretly.
- 8:32Speaker 3: More is it, well, you don't know what the track is, so.
- 8:37Speaker 2: Fair, Colin, those two songs are a good idea of
- 8:40Speaker 2: what the Holy fee it's going to sound like.
- 8:42Speaker 1: Musically, or they just yeah, they've all got a similar.
- 8:46Speaker 3: Kind of vein.
- 8:47Speaker 1: Like the last one we rise above, it wasn't as
- 8:50Speaker 1: heavy as this, but they all kind of fit together
- 8:53Speaker 1: as as an EP. The songs compared to what we've
- 8:56Speaker 1: done in the past and what we write. We've already
- 8:58Speaker 1: started writing the next lot of songs too, so it
- 9:01Speaker 1: does really fit together the way the songs go. So yeah,
- 9:06Speaker 1: So that's what we decided to drop an EP this time. Yes,
- 9:09Speaker 1: and you've got.
- 9:10Speaker 2: Two single launch shows too, on May the second and
- 9:13Speaker 2: May the eighth. Tell us a bit more about them.
- 9:16Speaker 1: Made the second, that's this Friday going to the Bendy
- 9:20Speaker 1: Hotel in Collingwood. We've got Amy Francis, a good friend
- 9:24Speaker 1: coming joining us the first thing we're doing with her
- 9:26Speaker 1: and the Lucky Punks. We haven't played with them before either,
- 9:29Speaker 1: so it's going to be.
- 9:30Speaker 3: A cool lineup.
- 9:31Speaker 1: And then following Friday the eighth and Frank's and our
- 9:34Speaker 1: hometown with our good mates Frankenbach and Devil Monkey. So
- 9:40Speaker 1: that's going to be a bit of a heavy night too.
- 9:42Speaker 1: So yeah, if you like your metal, come next week.
- 9:45Speaker 1: If you like your rock and roll, come this week.
- 9:46Speaker 1: If you're like everything, come both.
- 9:49Speaker 2: Where can people find out more?
- 9:50Speaker 4: We'll get tickets from the links are in all our
- 9:57Speaker 4: posts and in a link tree, because we're not running
- 10:01Speaker 4: the tickets for these two shows.
- 10:02Speaker 3: The venues are, so I don't know the.
- 10:03Speaker 1: Exacta we should I think, yeah, it just hits our
- 10:08Speaker 1: socials hate said band, and you'll fight everything there. We
- 10:12Speaker 1: slaughter all the social media. Male is good at doing
- 10:15Speaker 1: all that, and every time you open social media, everybody says,
- 10:18Speaker 1: I see how you said. So I'm sure you'll find
- 10:21Speaker 1: the leaks.
- 10:23Speaker 2: Before you go. I've got a little fluffy so I've
- 10:25Speaker 2: been doing with every band. But do you remember the
- 10:28Speaker 2: first time you heard one of your songs on radio?
- 10:30Speaker 2: And where were you and what song was it?
- 10:33Speaker 1: Well, it wasn't this band, it was the band Me
- 10:36Speaker 1: and Sam are in prior, which was Backyard Funk. We're
- 10:41Speaker 1: at rehearsal and mate rangus and said, quick put on
- 10:44Speaker 1: Triple J since since John's on the radio, so we
- 10:48Speaker 1: quickly start putting on recorded on triple j So that
- 10:51Speaker 1: was pretty cool. I was like it was up two
- 10:54Speaker 1: thousand and six or something like last seven, maybe eight
- 10:57Speaker 1: around that sort of time.
- 10:58Speaker 2: So that was pretty cools. All right, Well, place your time,
- 11:02Speaker 2: always a pleasure chatting. Say what you want is out Friday,
- 11:05Speaker 2: May the first, and they say it's a bit bit harder,
- 11:08Speaker 2: a bit of a bit of a different entry, you guys,
- 11:09Speaker 2: but it sounds great man, so best of luck.
- 11:16Speaker 1: So yeah, hope everybody enjoys it, and yes, check it
- 11:19Speaker 1: out this Friday and come to the gigs. We'll were
- 11:21Speaker 1: looking out for you coming, have a beers, a hello,
- 11:23Speaker 1: and buy some merch
