- 0:00Welcome to Have Faith, Let It Begin. This is Ariel Santana.
- 0:04Can you believe I'm seven years old already? I'm old enough now to introduce my dad.
- 0:10Ladies and gentlemen, your host, my dad, Angel Santana.
- 0:15My name is Angel Santana Jr. If you don't know who I am, if you know Angel Santana
- 0:20Sr., you would know that I am his son.
- 0:23So I'm one of the elders here at First Reformed Church, Been coming here since
- 0:28I was literally eight or six or seven years old. One of those ages.
- 0:33I received my first Bible right here. I'm down these steps. It was the Good
- 0:37News Bible, which I still have.
- 0:39If you're a visitor here, I just want to point out to you where the restrooms are.
- 0:43They are on my right, all the way there, which is your left,
- 0:47down the stairs, second door on your left.
- 0:50I'd like to formally welcome each and every one of you to the 88th Annual Walk
- 0:55Hill Valley Lenten Series as we're here for our third Sunday.
- 1:01And it is truly an honor to be here with you this evening.
- 1:04As many of you will hear, I am in ministry school.
- 1:07And I am just honored and blessed to have been chosen to be here with each and
- 1:12every one of you this evening.
- 1:14So welcome, welcome to the First Reformed Church, as we call it,
- 1:18the church on the hill, the light of the light.
- 1:22When I tell people that you walk through these doors, I love to tell you that you are home.
- 1:28So welcome home. Let's do a quick prayer.
- 1:32Heavenly Father, we thank you, Lord, for the music that we hear,
- 1:36music that soothes the soul.
- 1:38Allow today's music to pierce our hearts and allow us to be at peace in your precious name. Amen.
- 1:47Sentence and Salutation.
- 1:50The earth is the Lord's and everything in it.
- 1:54Jesus says, None of you can become my disciple if you do not give all of your possessions.
- 2:01Let us worship the Lord to whom all things belong.
- 2:05Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
- 2:10At this time, we're going to do a prayer of confession.
- 2:15If you'd like to rise, you may do so. We'll do this in unison.
- 2:18For those that are willing and able, please rise with me.
- 2:22And let's read this together. Gracious God, you have taught us that we cannot
- 2:28serve both you and wealth, yet we confess that we try.
- 2:33You have taught us to pray for daily bread, yet we store up treasures for ourselves.
- 2:40You have told us that none can follow you without giving up all possessions.
- 2:46Yet we cling tightly to what we have We confess that we fear not having enough
- 2:54We confess that we trust in what we can see More than your promises Forgive us,
- 3:02Lord Teach us to seek first your kingdom Teach us to live with enough Teach
- 3:09us to depend on you And to share with one another free us from what possesses
- 3:16us and forms us to people who trust in you completely.
- 3:21Through Jesus Christ, our Lord.
- 3:23Amen. Please be seated.
- 3:26So one of the things that I like to do as I'm discovering how I will be when
- 3:32I become a pastor, how I will talk about the scriptures before I read them.
- 3:37And one of the things I like to implement is called scripture overview.
- 3:42And what that is, is it takes me back to when I was a child.
- 3:45I remember sitting in the pews and saying, well, when the pastor goes up to
- 3:49read from the Bible, I just didn't understand what he was saying.
- 3:53I didn't read the Bible yet at that age. So I figure as I stand up here or wherever
- 3:59church I'm in, there will be people that will join the sanctuary and the congregation
- 4:04that may not know the word of the Lord.
- 4:06So what better way than to give them a scripture overview about what they're
- 4:11about to hear? So that's what this is, scripture overview.
- 4:15In Luke chapter 14, Luke 14 comes at a moment when large crowds are following Jesus.
- 4:23People are interested. They're curious, drawn to him.
- 4:28But instead of making it easier to follow him, Jesus makes it harder.
- 4:33He speaks about counting the cost.
- 4:36He talks about carrying a cross. He talks about and tells parables about builders
- 4:44and kings who must calculate what lies ahead before they begin.
- 4:49And then he says these words, None of you can become my disciple if you do not
- 4:55give up all your possessions.
- 4:58This is not a suggestion. It's not a metaphorical enthusiasm.
- 5:02It is a statement about elegance.
- 5:05Jesus is not asking for a donation. He's asking for a priority.
- 5:10In a world where possessions promise security and control, Jesus makes clear
- 5:16that discipleship requires release.
- 5:19This verse focuses us on what to ask.
- 5:24What do we do? What do we truly depend on? What shapes our decisions?
- 5:30What are we willing or unwilling to lose?
- 5:34So as we hear this reading tonight, we are invited not to defend ourselves, but to listen.
- 5:40And now Luke chapter 14, verse 33, the word of the Lord.
- 5:45In the same way, those of you who do not give up everything,
- 5:49you cannot be my disciples.
- 5:52The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.
- 5:55So here we are this evening, the third Sunday in Lent.
- 5:59And I was given chapter four from, it's called Kingdom Economics.
- 6:05And it comes from Luke chapter 14, verse 33. Now I'll tell you,
- 6:10that is not an easy sentence.
- 6:13None of you can become my disciples if you do not give up all your possessions.
- 6:18Jesus said it plainly, not softening, no qualifiers.
- 6:24And if we're honest, most of us immediately begin to negotiate.
- 6:29Surely he doesn't mean everything.
- 6:33Surely he means spiritually. Surely he means in principle.
- 6:37Because we are comfortable following Jesus as long as he doesn't rearrange too much.
- 6:44But in Luke chapter 14, Jesus is not interested in gathering fans.
- 6:50He's forming disciples.
- 6:53And discipleship, according to Jesus, has a cost.
- 6:57That tension, that discomfort, that's exactly where Lent wants us.
- 7:03This Lenten series is shaped by Stanley Hauerwas. It's a book called Jesus Changes Everything.
- 7:10And in part four, he talks about kingdom economics.
- 7:14Not money in the narrow sense, but economics in the deeper sense.
- 7:19How we organize our lives. What we assume belongs to us. What we protect.
- 7:26What we refuse to lose.
- 7:29And Harawas makes this uncomfortable claim. Wealth is not neutral. It trains us.
- 7:36It trains us to believe we're independent.
- 7:40It trains us to believe we are secure. It trains us to believe we are self-made.
- 7:46And that training makes discipleship harder than we think.
- 7:51So when I read this chapter for the first time, I gotta be honest,
- 7:54it didn't just challenge me, it unsettled me.
- 7:58Because it brought back memories for me.
- 8:01Memories of when I first felt called into ministry and realized that obedience
- 8:06wasn't going to fit neatly into the life I had planned.
- 8:11Memories of conversations that didn't go the way I hoped.
- 8:15Memories of moments when stepping forward meant something else had to fall away.
- 8:20Memories of realizing that saying yes to God sometimes means watching over things shift.
- 8:28Relationships, expectations, and comfort. This chapter didn't just talk about possessions.
- 8:35It talked about attachments. and had to ask myself, and I'm asking you to ask
- 8:41yourself, what are we still holding on to? What are we afraid to lose?
- 8:46What part of my identity feels safer than surrender?
- 8:51That's not theoretical thoughts for me.
- 8:55That's been lived already. Jesus says, none of you can become my disciples if
- 9:01you do not give up all your possessions.
- 9:04I can't read that verse, honestly, without telling you how close to home it's
- 9:08been hitting for me lately.
- 9:09I've taken on new responsibilities recently. I'm in pastoral school now, ministry training.
- 9:16And with that comes tuition, real tuition.
- 9:21There are moments when I check my bank account and feels, and I feel it physically.
- 9:27Bills don't stop. Life doesn't show slow down or doesn't stop and keeps coming
- 9:33because you just said yes to God No,
- 9:37they still keep coming And what surprises me is this I've had to let go of things.
- 9:42I genuinely thought were necessary Not luxuries Not reckless spending Just things
- 9:49that felt normal comfortable,
- 9:52expected Things like eating out without thinking twice Upgrading something just because I could.
- 9:59Living like the margin would always be there.
- 10:02And I realized something. What's hardest to give up isn't always money. It's the lifestyle.
- 10:09It's the predictability. It's knowing I can say yes to what I want.
- 10:14It's the feeling of control. And that's where this text started working on me.
- 10:20When Jesus says, give up everything, I don't hear him saying destroy your life
- 10:27I hear him asking Who gets to decide what you can't live without?
- 10:33Because whatever that is That's already shaping you For me I've had to sit with
- 10:40that question more than I expected There have been moments recently were real
- 10:44moments Where I've started to stare at numbers on a screen And I felt my chest tightening up,
- 10:52Moments where I've thought, maybe I should slow this down. Maybe I should wait.
- 10:57Maybe this isn't the responsibility or the responsible move for me.
- 11:01And underneath it all, that wasn't wisdom. That was fear.
- 11:06Fear of not having enough. Fear of not being secure.
- 11:11Fear of what might happen if things didn't line up the way I wanted them to.
- 11:16But I've noticed something.
- 11:18Every time I've loosened my grip, even just a little, God has not let me fall.
- 11:25Provision hasn't always looked dramatic. There haven't been fireworks,
- 11:31but there have been faithfulness.
- 11:34And that's what gives me the courage to keep listening to this verse instead of arguing with it.
- 11:41I've been thinking about something else, too. The truth is, everything we have is rented.
- 11:48Our house, this body, the time, even the money in our accounts. We act like owners.
- 11:56But scripture keeps reminding us we're stewards.
- 12:00We didn't create the air we breathe. We didn't choose the family we were born
- 12:04into. We didn't earn the grace that saved us.
- 12:08So when Jesus says, give up everything, maybe he's not reminding us or he's not demanding loss.
- 12:20Maybe he's reminding us we never owned it to begin with.
- 12:25Hauerwas pushes this even further. He says, wealth teaches us to lie to ourselves.
- 12:33We tell ourselves we're not rich. We're just comfortable. We're responsible.
- 12:39We're preparing a good life for our children. But underneath that is fear. Fear of dependence.
- 12:47Fear of vulnerability.
- 12:49Fear of not having enough.
- 12:52And Jesus teaches us to pray something radical.
- 12:56Give us this day our daily bread. Not luxury. Not excess.
- 13:02Not security for the next 20 years.
- 13:05Daily bread.
- 13:07Enough, just enough. And even that prayer is not my bread.
- 13:13It's our bread, shared bread, which means what I have was never meant to stop with me.
- 13:22Is where kingdom economics turns everything upside down. The world's economy
- 13:27says, accumulate, protect, secure yourself, make sure you're okay first.
- 13:34But the kingdom of God says, trust, share, depend on one another, and learn to say enough.
- 13:45And that's terrifying because it makes us vulnerable, but it also makes us free.
- 13:51Maybe this Lent isn't about losing. Maybe it's about loosening.
- 13:57Loosening our grip. Loosening our fear.
- 14:01Loosening the lie that we were self-made. Because when loosening our grip,
- 14:06we begin to discover we were being held all along.
- 14:12Jesus changes everything Not by taking from us But by freeing us From what we
- 14:20already own And what is already Please be seated,
- 14:23So this year's offering Will again go to support Rule Say if I say this right
- 14:28Rule And migrant ministry We invite you to place your offering In the plate
- 14:33back In the back In the sanctuary And you may write a check To Walk Hill Valley Lenten Series,
- 14:38In addition to that What I always like to say when it comes to an offering,
- 14:43I recall being in Providence, Rhode Island and not having much of an income of my own.
- 14:49And I would go to church and I try to leave before the offering would come around
- 14:53because I felt bad that I couldn't put anything in the plate.
- 14:56But the minister figured that out real quick.
- 15:00And he pulled me aside and he said, angel, the greatest offering you can give is a prayer.
- 15:06So you don't have to put something in the plate, but you can lead us in a prayer.
- 15:11So think about that today. Let us pray about the offering. Are we doing the
- 15:16song after the offering today? Like we do?
- 15:19Okay. Let's pray for the offering. Heavenly Father, thank you,
- 15:23Lord, for all that has been given to us. Thank you for the prayers.
- 15:28Thank you for the envelopes that are in the plates. Thank you for the Lenten
- 15:31series. Thank you for everyone that has participated and has come out.
- 15:36We ask you, Lord, that allow the funds to multiply and be put to good use in
- 15:42your precious name. Amen.
- 15:44As we leave today, here is the benediction.
- 15:48There's beautiful food, by the way, downstairs. I've already seen it.
- 15:51So enjoy it. Let's come together as one.
- 15:54Go now as disciples of Jesus Christ, not allowed or not owned by what you possess,
- 16:00but held by the one who possesses your heart.
- 16:03Go with open hands and undivided trust, and undivided trust.
- 16:10Hear that twice, undivided trust. When we fear whispers that are not enough,
- 16:16may you remember that God who gives us daily bread, when he urges you to cling tighter,
- 16:22may you have the courage to loosen your grip and may the grace of our Lord Jesus
- 16:27Christ, love God and the fellowship of our Holy Spirit be with you now and ever, evermore.
- 16:34As we say in my household, que Dios te bendiga, which means may God bless you.
- 16:39God bless. Amen. Go in peace.
