Transcript
- 1:17Hey, hey, welcome to another episode of Hot Takes with the
- 1:20Murph man. I'm the Murph man.
- 1:22I'm here with my Co host Connor. Oh, what's up bro?
- 1:26Morning. Not a good morning, just
- 1:29morning, huh? Yeah, just morning.
- 1:32Hey, let me tell you, I have a question for you.
- 1:35When you think about what's going on around the world, what
- 1:38do you think is some big things going on right now?
- 1:41I'm just curious. I don't even know anything
- 1:44that's going on right now. Sure you do.
- 1:47Dolly Parton passed away. Tim Curry passed away.
- 1:50Peter Cullen passed away. Everyone passed away.
- 1:51God damn right. Yeah, that's true.
- 1:56That is true. Everyone's passed away, man.
- 1:58I'm telling you, it just it's not any fun right now looking at
- 2:03the news. But I did hear something I want
- 2:05to share with you. You know, Trump has been
- 2:09changing the names of the Gulf of Mexico to Gulf of America,
- 2:13then Lake Ontario to Lake America.
- 2:15Well, there's one thing I don't know if you know the story about
- 2:18Canadian geese, they fly down South every summer or every
- 2:23winter, whatever. And actually, they fly in pairs,
- 2:26so like, if one dies, the other one just almost just gives up on
- 2:32life, right? But I think they're going to
- 2:37rename them to Donald Ducks. No, you didn't like that one.
- 2:45I did not like that one at all. You.
- 2:46Didn't like that one at all. Why not?
- 2:48That was funny. To you probably.
- 2:51It is funny to me. It is funny.
- 2:53It's funny to everybody. I promise you it is.
- 2:57But yeah, Donald Duck's, that was a one thing I saw on TikTok.
- 3:00This one, it's pretty funny. What do you think?
- 3:03Should they give Dolly Parton her day on 9/25?
- 3:07No. Why not?
- 3:09Why? What day?
- 3:10Because she's amazing. Do you know how much she's done
- 3:12for people? No.
- 3:14You don't know what she's done for people during the Gatlinburg
- 3:18fires. Like I think 100 families lost
- 3:20their homes. She gave them money like $1000 a
- 3:25month each. And then when everything was
- 3:27said and done, she'll build their houses.
- 3:28And she also gave them $5000 to buy furniture and wouldn't it?
- 3:32She has scholarships for kids. She did a lot of stuff.
- 3:35And the other thing called the Presidential Medal of Honor,
- 3:37which is like the president gives you the highest award the
- 3:40the ceiling can get. And Biden and Trump both try to
- 3:45give her one. So it wasn't like Republican or
- 3:47Democrat, but she turned them both down because she didn't she
- 3:50was not political at all. And I saw an interview with
- 3:54Obama, and Obama was asked, how come you never gave her a
- 3:57Presidential Medal of Honor? And his answer was real simple.
- 4:00He says, I thought she already had one.
- 4:05He just because she had done so much, he just assumed she had
- 4:08gotten 1, you know, So she really, really, really has done
- 4:13a lot of stuff, you know, So rest in peace, right?
- 4:20But let me tell you something. We're here on MBR Talk Roku.

- 5:00what's going on. I'll tell you what, Connor, Are
- 5:03you ready to start the show this morning?
- 5:05Yes. Sir.
- 5:06All right, I say it's time to ignite the fuse.
- 5:19Welcome to Hot Takes with the Murph Man.
- 5:22Today we are talking about building your in house network.
- 5:25How to network effectively at work.
- 5:28Your Co workers, mentors and cross functional allies are one
- 5:31of your greatest career assets. This episode shows you how to
- 5:34build relationships that lead to collaboration, support and
- 5:38opportunity. Today we are focusing on
- 5:40building your in house network. The stage is set.
- 5:44Let's jump feet first into the fire.
- 5:48That's right, building your in house network.
- 5:51What could that entail, Connor? You know what I mean?
- 5:55It's one of those things when your Co workers, mentors and
- 5:59your allies are all part of your greatest career assets because
- 6:01you're at work with these people and you need to have a great
- 6:05network set up with them. OK, so that's what we're going
- 6:08to be talking about today is this building your network.
- 6:13So as we talked about this, I want you to think about what it
- 6:17is that we're doing, OK? We talk about work, we talk
- 6:20about everything going on. And we get to the point where
- 6:26we've been talking about like from how to start college,
- 6:30moving on to adulthood and getting a job and everything.
- 6:35And we were talking about managers that last week, right?
- 6:38We talked about the business etiquette, how to communicate at
- 6:41work, all of that stuff. But what I think is most
- 6:44interesting to me is when we talk about this, what's what's
- 6:51it called? These topics that it's something
- 6:58that everyone can, can use, OK, This one in particular, because
- 7:03this is having a network of people.
- 7:06It's one of those things, when you think about it, that you
- 7:10don't realize how much having those, those contacts matter,
- 7:19OK. Because it's not only at work,
- 7:22it is everywhere. And it's one of those things
- 7:25when, yeah, you become friends at work, but it's it's not about
- 7:29making friends. It's about helping you with your
- 7:32job. And I've said this before now,
- 7:34so I don't know if you remember. What do you think is the most
- 7:37important person at the job? The boss.
- 7:44The boss, how are you thinking? Well, the the boss depends on
- 7:50her secretary or his secretary, right?
- 7:55Everything goes through that secretary.
- 7:56She knows everything going on with that person.
- 8:00Do you, can you understand that? Can you agree with that?
- 8:02Yes, I agree. So that secretary becomes the
- 8:06most important person in that person's life.
- 8:11OK, so like making friends with secretary is very important
- 8:18because they can tell you, for example, hey, they're going to
- 8:24be auditing you next week or when you have a problem.
- 8:29And I'll give you an example. We had to turn in paperwork when
- 8:32we had new cases, right? And I started a group and I
- 8:36wanted to start it after the 1st of the month, but they insisted
- 8:39I started the week before. And I told my secretary, I, I've
- 8:46tried changing this, I can't. And I'm going to give you the
- 8:48stack of papers that you're going to have to input before
- 8:50the 1st of the month, right? And I gave her a pretty good
- 8:54stack and then I told her I'm still finishing them up.
- 9:00So when I, I gave her the rest, it was a stack about this big,
- 9:05but only two packets. The rest were just bling.
- 9:10So she's she's like, she gets it.
- 9:11She's I can't get mad at you for forgiving because you, you, you
- 9:14warned me about this, right? And then she started working on
- 9:18it. She's like, oh, you're stupid.
- 9:20Like, you know, she didn't have to worry about that so much.
- 9:25So when when we're doing this and we're talking, you know,
- 9:30secretary to me is the most important person, but you have
- 9:32your Co workers and you have people that train you and people
- 9:35you can ask questions too. And when you have that network,
- 9:39you can call someone up and go, hey, I don't understand this.
- 9:43Can you help me? And it's, yeah, we do that for,
- 9:45for work. We, we ask people for help.
- 9:47That's when it's something embarrassing, like you should
- 9:50already know how to do this, right?
- 9:53You're. Like, can you help me out here?
- 9:55Because I, I, I really don't know this one and it, it, it
- 10:01gets a little embarrassing sometimes.
- 10:04Sometimes. Sometimes, yeah, because you can
- 10:06ask stupid questions. And you know, again, like I said
- 10:09last week, you know, they say there's no such thing as a
- 10:11stupid question. I disagree.
- 10:14There's definitely stupid questions out there.
- 10:17But I'll tell you what. Speaking of stupid questions,
- 10:20let's get to a smart one called The Burning Question.
- 10:32Today's burning question is what is the most effective way to
- 10:36build your internal network at work?
- 10:39A Only talking to people on your team.
- 10:42B Attending company wide social events.
- 10:46C Scheduling casual coffee chats with people from other
- 10:49departments. D Waiting for someone to talk to
- 10:52you. Let's see who can bridge the gap
- 10:55and who gets left stranded. All right, let's talk about
- 11:01that. OK, when we have these, the
- 11:08question what is the most effective way to build your
- 11:10internal network at work? Only talking to people in your
- 11:15team, attending company wide social events, scheduling casual
- 11:19coffee chats with people from other departments or waiting for
- 11:23someone to talk to you? OK, that informal stuff is more
- 11:30important, OK, Having talking to people on your team.
- 11:33We obviously know you have to talk to people on your team,
- 11:36attending company wide social events like a beer after work.
- 11:39Do you think that's important? Yeah, attending that.
- 11:43Not all the time, but maybe sometimes.
- 11:46It'll be nice to like invite them out and talk.
- 11:52That's what I would do. Well, yeah, but I'm saying that
- 11:57the the guys get together for a beer after work.
- 11:59Yeah, that's fine. Does everyone go to that?
- 12:03No, no they don't. When?
- 12:05They do, then they do. I don't know.
- 12:06Well, because not everybody is interested in doing something
- 12:09like that, OK? Not everyone is interested in
- 12:13doing something like that. So is it forced recreation that
- 12:18you have to be together? OK.
- 12:21Do you do you think that's that's fair to people, that you
- 12:23make people go to these things? We're not making anybody go to
- 12:26anything or they want to. They can.
- 12:30It's just an event. It's not like we're forcing
- 12:32everybody to go. But that's how you build
- 12:35networking like playing golf. By forcing.
- 12:38People Andrew's of thoughts. Thanks for joining us.
- 12:41By forcing people to go or not forcing people to go.
- 12:47If, if you tell people, if you, if you discuss work at these
- 12:52meetings and you make plans and then on Monday morning you come
- 12:56in and you're like, hey, don't forget Billy's in charge of the
- 12:59hey, when did that happen? Drinking beers Friday night, We
- 13:01were talking about it. We put him in charge.
- 13:03Is that fair to you if you don't go?
- 13:06No. So it's almost mandatory to go
- 13:09to these things. Right, I guess, but if you're
- 13:15only trying to get to know each other then that's fine.
- 13:20Right, but as doing work like playing golf like one one one of
- 13:25the best piece of advices I've ever gotten in my life was from
- 13:28my old principal. She says tell Connor to play
- 13:34golf in high school. Do you remember that?
- 13:37No, you don't. No, she says by playing golf.
- 13:44OK, when you go on business meetings, you can go to the golf
- 13:51course and you have that person for three hours to discuss
- 13:56business, I guess. OK, so learning how to golf is
- 14:04something that if you want to build networking, that is one
- 14:06way to do it. OK.
- 14:09Is going to the golf course, talking business, having a
- 14:16couple beers and and you have three hours dedicated with that
- 14:19person. So learning to play golf is
- 14:24something that if you're in business is something that I
- 14:28think that's the piece, one of the best piece of advice I've
- 14:30ever received because that's one way to get it.
- 14:34Now, obviously, if I don't drink beer and you know, you don't
- 14:36have to drink beer when you go these things, you can drink
- 14:37water and whatever. You know, I remember when I was
- 14:42in the reserves after work, everyone get together to go
- 14:45drink some beers, right? And they did this every weekend.
- 14:49And back then I was drinking a lot.
- 14:51I was only 17. I've been drinking since I was
- 14:5314. But I went and hung out with the
- 14:58older guys. We went to the bar, We went, you
- 15:00know, dancing, whatever, right? And it was part of the culture
- 15:07of the team, and it really brought us together.
- 15:10The ones who didn't go to that, we didn't really associate with
- 15:15much because we had a deeper friendship over here and they
- 15:20weren't part of the circle. Yeah.
- 15:23You know, like, you have your friend groups, right?
- 15:26Some of them crossed, but some of them don't.
- 15:29What would you rather have? Groups that cross or groups that
- 15:31don't? It really doesn't matter to me.
- 15:36We're talking about like for business.
- 15:37Do you think they should cross or should they be separate?
- 15:40Cross since they're all working together.
- 15:43Right. Yeah, yeah.
- 15:45But what happens if you have someone that's not from work?
- 15:47They're not going to be part of that group.
- 15:48OK, then why would you invite them?
- 15:51Because you have departments in your business, everyone has
- 15:54different departments too, OK, but.
- 15:57You're having a meeting with your department only.
- 15:59Why would you invite other people?
- 16:02And we're going to talk about that.
- 16:07OK, Let's talk about today's hot take so that we can get to that
- 16:10point for you. Today's hot take is this.
- 16:24Your internal network is more important than your external one
- 16:28for career advancement. You will get your next job by
- 16:31knowing people at other companies, but you will get your
- 16:34next promotion by knowing people in every department of your
- 16:38current company. Time to see whose career
- 16:41strategy is built on solid ground.
- 16:46All right, so your internal network is more important than
- 16:49your external 1. You will get the next job by
- 16:51knowing people at other companies, but you will get your
- 16:54next promotion by knowing people in every department of your
- 16:57current company. Because like I'll give you an
- 17:00example. One time we were looking for a
- 17:03director for a new program and my boss tells me, hey, I think
- 17:07you need to apply for this position.
- 17:08You'd be great at it. And another one of my Co
- 17:12workers, we both went and we applied.
- 17:14And as we're talking to the CEO about what we were wanting to do
- 17:21with him, right? He was like, well, you know, I'm
- 17:26looking for someone with experience with this and that.
- 17:29And I, I said, so you already have somebody for the position.
- 17:33He says, yeah, this is so why did you waste my time if you're,
- 17:39I mean, if you already have somebody, why did you waste my
- 17:41time? And I, I felt comfortable that I
- 17:43didn't mean it like aggressively or anything, but I said, why did
- 17:46you waste my time? And he said, I just wanted to
- 17:52see you in this position. I want to see how you
- 17:57interviewed. I wanted to see how you.
- 18:00And I'm like, OK, so. Somebody going to fire the guy?
- 18:07No, that's what was the next. Next thing I told him I said.
- 18:11So let's say I did really awesome in this interview
- 18:14without a change of mind. He said no, I I don't
- 18:20understand, right? I liked him and everything.
- 18:24I wasn't friends with him, but I felt comfortable enough to,
- 18:27like, go. So why did you waste my time?
- 18:29So I went back to my office. My boss said, how did it go?
- 18:30I said he already asked someone. And she looked at me real
- 18:34seriously. And she says, I'm sorry.
- 18:35I did not know that. Had I known, I wouldn't have
- 18:39told you anything. Dang.
- 18:43And under the other person, the program lost its funding.
- 18:52Yeah. That.
- 18:53That would have been something that that would have happened to
- 18:58me. It wasn't the person in charge
- 19:01that did anything. It was a really bad situation
- 19:05and it put a bad spot on the on the business and they had to
- 19:12shut it down. You know, they lost their
- 19:15contract and everything. So I would have been without a
- 19:17job if I got that job because it was nothing that she could have
- 19:20controlled in my opinion, right, The one that had the position.
- 19:24But. That sucks.
- 19:28Oh, well, it does. But so, yeah, so sometimes
- 19:32things happen for a reason. I do believe that
- 19:34wholeheartedly. Me too.
- 19:37Cassie. Thank you for sending the
- 19:39popular. Appreciate that.
- 19:42And the Doug laugh. Did your hard joke about Donald
- 19:44Ducks? I still think that's funny.
- 19:48I don't care if you do. I'll tell you what.
- 19:50We're going to take a quick break and we will come back and
- 19:54we'll discuss those terms we need to learn so that we can get
- 19:59familiar with what we're talking about.
- 20:01We'll be right back. It's time for a break.
- 20:03Hot takes with the Murph man will return after these.

- 23:26represent. Before we get back to the show,
- 23:30we pause for something that matters to me deeply.
- 23:33I was inspired by Ryan Spencer's song Make 22 Zero.
- 23:37Again, I'd like to remind you that help is always available

- 23:58All right, how you doing? How you doing?
- 24:02The the video we were just showing with Ryan Spencer song
- 24:08Make 22 Zero again talks about veteran suicide.
- 24:12And it's just something that is very important to me, you know?
- 24:16So if you need help, dial 98. You don't have to be a veteran,
- 24:22OK? Anyone can qualify for that.
- 24:25So think about it. And if you need help, dial 988
- 24:30and press one. Right, Connor?
- 24:33Yep. All right, so getting back to
- 24:37the show, we're going to be talking about our terms that we
- 24:42call laying down the coals and we have a video for that as
- 24:47well. So let's watch the video.
- 24:57Before we dig in, let's clarify some of the key terms we'll be
- 25:01using today while laying down the coals.
- 25:04Internal networking. Building relationships within
- 25:07your organization to foster collaboration and career growth.
- 25:11Cross functional collaboration, working with people from
- 25:14different departments or teams. This gives you a broader
- 25:18perspective of the company. Informal touch points.
- 25:21Casual interactions that build trust and rapport EG coffee
- 25:25chats, hallway converse. Let's stack the definitions high
- 25:30before we test them in the field.
- 25:34So internal networking, building relationships with an
- 25:37organization, Duh. Right that that.
- 25:39That's so self-explanatory it's not even funny.
- 25:42But The thing is, people don't do it.
- 25:44And no matter what we say, they're not going to do it.
- 25:52I don't know why they don't think that's important.
- 25:54I think it's one of the most important things you could ever
- 25:55think of, OK? Yeah.
- 26:00Do you know why? Why?
- 26:05Because when you're doing that, I'm going to put this, it's
- 26:16just, it's, it should be just second nature to you.
- 26:19Talking to people at work and making friends, OK, Cross
- 26:23functional collaboration, working with people from
- 26:25different departments. This gives you a broader
- 26:27perspective of the company. Like I told you earlier, I
- 26:30applied for another position, even though we were on our own
- 26:33entity, I talked to people not at the different departments.
- 26:36So I knew what was going on, you know, and plus I talked to my,
- 26:40my boss who told me a lot more about, about what we were doing
- 26:43then informal touchpoints. This is, this is one of those
- 26:46things that I want to think about.
- 26:47I know you can read OK, but what do you think informal
- 26:50touchpoints means? Like in your own words.
- 27:01I don't know, when you say informal touch points, you mean
- 27:06like something that's like not professional, right?
- 27:09Well. Like not, not like, not like
- 27:16goofing off or anything, but not in the sense where you need to
- 27:20be professional. Right.
- 27:22Well, yeah, because informal. Yeah.
- 27:27But it's more of a situation where you bump into someone that
- 27:35does not. It's not a formal meeting.
- 27:39It's but we get to talk about it.
- 27:41So it's just like a if I see you, I see you out of work.
- 27:46Well, not even out inside work, well, anywhere.
- 27:50Yeah, you know it. It's funny because when you
- 27:54think about like what you're informed us like the coffee pot,
- 28:00the dining, the break room, you would be in the break room at at
- 28:04work, right? Yeah.
- 28:07Did you ever talk to anybody in there?
- 28:10Sometimes, yeah. Not always.
- 28:13OK. And what would you do?
- 28:16Just talk, Billy, how's your day?
- 28:18Just talk. Yeah, be like, what shift are
- 28:20you working right now? That's it.
- 28:23We didn't really talk much you. Didn't ever talk about work.
- 28:29Well, no, there was nothing to talk about.
- 28:33We talk on the job. There was nothing to talk about.
- 28:37If we work together, we talk on the job.
- 28:41So you would talk on the job? Yeah, OK, but not like before,
- 28:45after or out of work, you know what I mean?
- 28:55No, I don't like. You know how?
- 28:59Because that's what I'm talking about.
- 29:01The informal touch points are not formal meetings.
- 29:03Yeah. So if you talk to them meeting
- 29:06at work, that wasn't a a meeting then?
- 29:12There's no meetings that we have our work, it's just.
- 29:16Oh, you never had team meetings? Well, yeah, but that was before
- 29:23the work day that we had like 3. Right.
- 29:27OK. But although the conversations
- 29:29you had in between one of those informal touch points, that's
- 29:31that's the point of that is not the formal touch points, It's
- 29:35the informal ones that matter because those casual
- 29:38interactions that build trust and rapport, coffee, Halloween
- 29:42conversations, things of that nature.
- 29:44OK. When you think about that, do
- 29:47you think those are important? Yeah, yeah, communication is
- 29:51always important. Communication is always
- 29:52important. You know, I haven't never worked
- 29:57for a very big company. Me neither.
- 30:01Where I'm at now, I mean, we have like 100 teachers and
- 30:03whatever, you know, schools, OK. Where I used to work, we had
- 30:06like 500 people a day working. Yeah, no, like just customers,
- 30:12yeah. Oh, yeah, I worked at Kmart.
- 30:14We had thousands of customers. OK, that's not what I mean.
- 30:16I know. Kidding.
- 30:18You know where I'm at now, there's so many employees.
- 30:19I don't know all of them. I don't, but I've helped a few
- 30:24of them and I've had conversations with a few of them
- 30:28that aren't work related. And whenever I cover for
- 30:33teachers, I make friends with them.
- 30:35And what's funny is I tell them, you know, if you ever need
- 30:37anything, come and see me. So remember earlier in the
- 30:40beginning we were talking about doing that in the network so you
- 30:44can ask stupid questions. When a a teacher's having
- 30:47difficulty with doing something, they'll reach out to us.
- 30:51I say us as a team but one of us each teacher has their favorite
- 30:54person to go to and this is 1 teacher we had for a while that
- 30:59was making us not making us but she had a lot of issues actually
- 31:02got hacked and her so we were helping her with that right And
- 31:08we got in trouble for helping her because it wasn't work
- 31:10related. Well she get hacked on her.
- 31:17Personal computer, just like I use my own personal computer for
- 31:20work. Yeah.
- 31:21So it has work on it though, right?
- 31:27Yeah, but it affected our work because it's in the virus to our
- 31:32system because that's how it works, right?
- 31:40You know so when? When I was doing that and
- 31:55helping her, I had no problem doing it.
- 31:58You know, It wasn't really pushing a lot of work to me, OK,
- 32:03But it was something that we needed to not do because she
- 32:12should have contacted and paid someone to do it.
- 32:15She was getting free help. That's how it was presented to
- 32:18us. And we agreed, you know, we also
- 32:22would have teachers say, hey, can you help me out with this?
- 32:25And we would help them like nothing.
- 32:27But the boss put out a message to everybody, said, do not ask
- 32:31them for help. They have their own things they
- 32:36got to do. We have proper channels, meaning
- 32:38like you need to come to me if you have questions.
- 32:43A lot of people were like, I don't want to do that, I don't
- 32:46want to do that. I wouldn't want to do that.
- 32:48Well, that's the point though, right?
- 32:50Maybe that's why I don't want to ask questions anymore because of
- 32:53being forced to. Well, I still have people
- 32:58reaching out to me. Not as many as we had before,
- 33:02but. Obviously, I know obviously
- 33:04there's going to be some people that don't care about it and
- 33:07still do it. And we, you know.
- 33:08Isn't I hurting anybody? I mean, it's not, you're just
- 33:11asking for help. Exactly.
- 33:14It's, it's not hurting anyone. So when we, when we try to help
- 33:19somebody, you know, it's, it's not, not anything too serious.
- 33:23And we, we move on very quickly to that, you know what I mean?
- 33:28But I'll tell you what, it's enough to hear my stories.
- 33:32And sometimes it works better when you hear someone else's
- 33:35story. So let's hear the story from the
- 33:36fire. Let's talk about Nico.
- 33:47In today's story from the fire, Nico started grabbing coffee
- 33:51with people from other departments.
- 33:53One of those chats led to a project collaboration and later
- 33:57a job referral. When a new role opened up, his
- 34:00network became his net worth. Real experience is the ultimate
- 34:05test of theory. All right, let's talk about Nico
- 34:10Connor. OK, OK, OK.
- 34:18I was waiting for you to say something.
- 34:20I was waiting for you to answer. So Nico started grabbing coffee
- 34:25with people from other departments, and one of those
- 34:27chats led to a project collaboration and later job
- 34:29referral when news rolls opened up.
- 34:32OK, sometimes when you make friends with those other
- 34:35departments, OK, they'll tell you, hey, heads up, Bill's
- 34:43leaving, you know, so get your resume ready, right?
- 34:48That that's a big deal because little, little inside
- 34:52information like that helps you. But also the the collaborations
- 34:56you do with other departments is important too, because as you're
- 34:59sitting there and you're doing something with another
- 35:05department, you bring things together.
- 35:08And it was funny because when I worked at schools, right, I try
- 35:15to bring people in. And there was one day I didn't
- 35:18know how things worked. I was still new.
- 35:21And I was like, let me get the band here.
- 35:24Let me get the cheerleaders from Burgess, you know, right.
- 35:27And the student council, I mean, the student manager was amazing.
- 35:31Ruth What, What was her name? Do you remember anyway?
- 35:36I didn't relate to you. No student.
- 35:39Activities manager, that the one who's always doing activities,
- 35:41but you know her. I don't know her name.
- 35:44I didn't talk to her and hated her.
- 35:47She was weird. She wasn't.
- 35:49I don't like the TV. Maybe a little weird, but we
- 35:52were coordinating everything. And then she asked me a a
- 35:54question. I didn't even think of Miss
- 35:55Boland. Miss Boland, she says.
- 36:00So have you submitted the paperwork for the buses?
- 36:03And then I said, no, let me go ask my secretary for that.
- 36:06I, I'm new. I told her, right?
- 36:09I go tell the secretary, she says, and how are we going to
- 36:11pay for that? Like what?
- 36:15It's just, we have to pay for the gas and the driver and
- 36:17everything. I'm like, what?
- 36:21So I had to squash it, right? I had to squash that.
- 36:25And it was funny because I didn't know.
- 36:29So the next time I did something, I made sure I didn't
- 36:31use any school resources, right? I had, I was, we had a
- 36:38partnership with a unit on base and they were the helicopters
- 36:42South of Atlanta, Chinook, a Black Hawk and an Apache in our
- 36:46playground, right? They came out, they did a side
- 36:49survey. They said we can do this no
- 36:51problem, blah, blah, blah. I got approval all the way up
- 36:54through the FAA at the tower. OK, our our just so you know,
- 37:00the back line of the school, the back fence, I say it was Fort
- 37:03Bliss. So literally a fence was slit us
- 37:05apart. So we you know, we were right
- 37:09there. It's like they had to fly over
- 37:10city or anything. They had an open land to to get
- 37:13to us. And then I asked, I had to call
- 37:20the director of services for the district.
- 37:25I called right. And I said hey.
- 37:34We need to get approval for this.
- 37:36Here's what's going on, blah, blah.
- 37:38I had it. I had the approval from him.
- 37:41Then one day he calls back and I'm not at my desk and my
- 37:45secretary is taking a message for me.
- 37:47And the assistant principal I didn't like was like, she says
- 37:53OK, Mr. whatever else, let me get it.
- 37:54And he's like, who? Who's he calling for?
- 37:56For Sean? Let me talk to him.
- 37:59And he cancelled the whole thing.
- 38:01For what, I don't know. There was, there was no reason
- 38:07he gave me. He just didn't want to do it.
- 38:09I was going to have helicopters landing veterans coming from
- 38:15other organizations. I was going to do everything was
- 38:17free. It wasn't costing us a penny,
- 38:20just the time. And it was going to be a really,
- 38:22really, really cool event. And then he did that right.
- 38:27That's crazy dude. And I went to the counselor who
- 38:31I was coordinating this with, and I said, you didn't tell
- 38:37anybody what we were doing. And she says, honestly, I didn't
- 38:43think you would get it done. I was like, I had the FAA
- 38:47involved, dude. I was like, you made me do all
- 38:51this and you didn't even tell me we weren't doing it.
- 38:53I was really mad at her and very, very unhappy with her.
- 39:00And it just, I don't know, but I just gave up on that job at that
- 39:07point, you know, because like, I couldn't do anything.
- 39:12My hands were tied everywhere. I tried to do something and that
- 39:14would have been an amazing event, amazing event, but it got
- 39:20shot down and I got very upset about that and it just, I had no
- 39:26power so I couldn't do anything about it unfortunately.
- 39:30Yeah, why not even talk to the principal?
- 39:34The second principal can't make every decision.
- 39:39OK, think about office politics. I already he already hated me.
- 39:46I go over his head and I get this done.
- 39:50Now he looks bad to this director at the district because
- 39:54he cancelled, then all of a sudden it's back on.
- 39:57He's it's going to look bad. He's going to take it out on me
- 39:59sometimes. You got to He does, then he
- 40:01does. Have you heard?
- 40:02For students, for the kids and for veterans also.
- 40:06You're right, but here it is making my life a living hell.
- 40:09Make his life a living hell. I should have.
- 40:12I really should have. But there's have you ever heard
- 40:23you win the battle, but you lose the war?
- 40:26Have you heard of that phrase, any of the term?
- 40:28Pick your battles because there's some battles you can win
- 40:32and still come out ahead, and there's some battles you'll win
- 40:36and you'll lose in the long run. Say that again.
- 40:41There's some battles you can choose and you can win in the
- 40:45long run. There's some that you can win,
- 40:49but you'll lose in the long run because like, for example, like,
- 41:00I don't, I don't know if you've heard, but El Paso school
- 41:04districts had a lot of issues financially this past year
- 41:07because the state didn't give us the money we were supposed to.
- 41:10I wonder why? Because they gave it to charter
- 41:11schools and private schools. I still don't like that idea.
- 41:15Don't, don't, don't, don't. Don't get me started on that
- 41:17one. OK, I work at a charter school
- 41:21and I still disagree with but don't don't open that kind of
- 41:31worms. But we lost the budget and they
- 41:33had to fire so many teachers and the budget got cut down so much
- 41:38that now the superintendents and the directors and everyone who's
- 41:41a salaried employee at the main office has to do 8 days of
- 41:45subbing a year. Substitute teacher, four days in
- 41:52the fall, 4 days in the spring. They have to do it.
- 41:56They got rid of the budget, they got rid of the teachers.
- 41:58Guess who's having to teach? They are.
- 42:01So when a teacher calls in sick, that's Superintendent that the
- 42:04the main person could get called into work.
- 42:07Wow. Isn't that crazy, right?
- 42:11They agreed on it, I mean. Maybe if someone puts in leave
- 42:14and they want to be off in it with enough notice, those are
- 42:16the ones that they'll take. They won't take the last minute
- 42:18ones. But these people who haven't
- 42:22been in the classroom in so long are now having to come to the
- 42:25classroom. And so there's there's they're
- 42:29very out of touch with schools. I think it's a great idea that
- 42:33they do this. If they actually do it great.
- 42:37But it goes back several years ago.
- 42:44We had the star scandal with the EPA.
- 42:46See, we had people go to jail over it, right?
- 42:50We got a new Superintendent. He's the one that was secretly
- 42:53doing contracts with charter schools, using our funds to go
- 42:58help other schools and stuff. Then we got a new
- 43:01Superintendent, which I thought she was going to be awesome.
- 43:06And I was impressed with her. I I was, I'm not going to lie,
- 43:11actually, I was impressed with the very first Superintendent.
- 43:13I'm talking about the one that got sent to jail.
- 43:15I really enjoyed working with him.
- 43:16What? Yeah.
- 43:18All the all the all the people who got caught with them or all
- 43:22my friends. We went to school together.
- 43:27But going back to Superintendent, I thought she
- 43:29was amazing. And all the meetings I went to
- 43:31with her, she was amazing. She leaves and we find out she
- 43:35did no supervision of these people for three years.
- 43:41That's why the problem got so bad in EPISD.
- 43:44How did no one find out after three years?
- 43:47Well, they, because they were doing the budget and they were
- 43:49supposed to be $4 million short and we have $4 million.
- 43:53You know, you have a rainy day fund.
- 43:54They have this fund that you can pull money from and it'll save
- 43:57you for a couple days, you know, and you're supposed to have like
- 44:003 to 6 months of money. We were down, say 28 days,
- 44:04right? Oh, my God, That 4 million
- 44:08deficit when they did the audit went to 52,000,000.
- 44:12People were buying things without getting approval.
- 44:14They were just spending the money.
- 44:16And the finance officer was, yeah, take it, yo, no
- 44:20supervision, no evaluations of them, nothing.
- 44:26And the one, you know, we're in this mess right now.
- 44:29So they had to cut hundreds of positions, like all the parent
- 44:33liaisons and all the military liaison positions were cut.
- 44:37So who's going to help the parents, the secretary, people
- 44:41with the front office? They have other jobs, right?
- 44:45When I worked at El Paso High School, I did 300 different
- 44:48events as a parent liaison in a year.
- 44:54OK. Damn, dude. 300 different events
- 44:58for parents that are now placed on someone else's shoulders.
- 45:06OK, so it, it these cuts affect everybody.
- 45:09So now they have to be in the classroom.
- 45:11And I think that's pretty cool, but let's see how it goes.
- 45:16But yeah, so it's one of those things when you really think
- 45:18about the, the networking and the problem, people don't
- 45:22realize what happens and when like, for example, the star
- 45:28scandal I was talking about that people went to jail for.
- 45:32Everyone knew what was happening.
- 45:34Everyone knew and they were letting it happen.
- 45:38And when the state came to take over us, right, they found a lot
- 45:46of things, you know, and then it just keeps happening over and
- 45:49over and over again. So remember this conversation
- 45:52three years from now, four years from now to say, is the district
- 45:57in a better position or not? OK, yeah.
- 46:02Total. Now here, here's like I said, I
- 46:05don't let's talk about politics, But there's something else I
- 46:07heard about yesterday. The war in Iraq is costing US
- 46:11money, obviously, right? They have been raiding and they
- 46:15use these words. They raided the sailor.
- 46:17The Navy funds the payroll funds to pay for that war.
- 46:21And one of the people in the Navy said we were robbed.
- 46:26OK. They're saying now they don't
- 46:29have the money to pay the Navy sailors and that might become an
- 46:34issue if they don't find where the money to come from.
- 46:39So when they have a budget, everything is set up or you only
- 46:41can spend so much on everything right now, they have to come up
- 46:44with extra money that wasn't in the budget.
- 46:48Where? How do they even make the money
- 46:49for the fund? Like working jobs and all that.
- 46:53Or. Oh, no, no, no.
- 46:55It's all government money. You know, you have place that
- 46:58government gets taxes and gets funds, bonds and you know all
- 47:02the stuff. They have a certain budget and
- 47:06it gets spent. But they rated the sailors
- 47:10payroll funds. How do you like?
- 47:15It was to stop war with Iraq, I think.
- 47:21I think that's good. Yes, there's some downside to
- 47:23it, but so it's better for the best.
- 47:27In the end, gas prices will go down.
- 47:30Well, supposedly the Strait of Hormuz already opened up and it
- 47:34should have already gone down and it just keeps going up, so I
- 47:38don't know what to say about that.
- 47:40Just attention, that's it, probably.
- 47:43So maybe after that, after all this, we'll be good.
- 47:48We'll go back down at 3.2 per gallon, Yeah.
- 47:52That would be nice. You know, I I was on another
- 47:58screen and I didn't notice that Lovey came in and, you know, she
- 48:02joined us for a little while, so we got to make sure we keep up
- 48:05on that. OK?
- 48:06OK. But I'll tell you what, all
- 48:11these places, all these tips, all these everything don't
- 48:14matter if you don't have a plan. So let's get to the heat map and
- 48:18let's see what the plan is for today.
- 48:28The heat map will show you where to focus your efforts for the
- 48:31most impact. Schedule one coffee, chat or
- 48:34lunch per month with someone outside your team.
- 48:37This is a low pressure way to build connections.
- 48:41Ask about their role, challenges and how your work intersects.
- 48:45Show genuine curiosity, offer help or insight when you can.
- 48:50It builds goodwill and shows you a team player.
- 48:53The map is drawn back to Murph Man for the next segment.
- 48:58Chart your course and find your path to new opportunities.
- 49:04Time out, Connor again. He's still a teenager, OK?
- 49:12Anytime you hear certain words, you laugh.
- 49:15So he saw the word intersex and you're like intersex.
- 49:22I'm like no kind of intersect. The AI said intersex.
- 49:25I didn't hear, no T, no SI heard.
- 49:28That's the word intersex. You don't say intersect.
- 49:36It just sounded like that. But you know, 2 lines intersect.
- 49:42Intersect. Yeah, they intersect.
- 49:45With the T at the end. Add an S to that and then
- 49:48becomes intersex. You see, you corrected yourself
- 49:51and it's like. You don't say that, so I'm
- 49:54trying to tell you. You don't say that.
- 49:56It's anyway, OK? It's the word for a reason.
- 49:59But yeah, teenager. We were going, huh?
- 50:01I heard the word sex. Homo erectus.
- 50:07Homo. OH.
- 50:09Yes, Homo sapiens. Oh, from friends.
- 50:13You know. The show.
- 50:16Yes. Erectus no homo.
- 50:24Teenagers, man, how long before you turn 20?
- 50:29Two months. A month and a half, a month and
- 50:34a half, and then 13 1/2 months before you turn 21.
- 50:41Yeah, what do? You think you're going to do
- 50:43when you turn 21? Sleep.
- 50:47You already do that. All right, so let's talk about
- 50:50the heat map and those steps you can take.
- 50:52Schedule coffee or chats with a member from another department
- 50:56on a regular basis so you can talk to them and know what's
- 50:58going on. And, you know, learning other
- 51:03jobs parallel to you, learning the jobs under you because
- 51:07hopefully you came up the ranks and understanding some of the
- 51:09position jobs up here makes you a better employee.
- 51:14And when you go for a job promotion, you can say I've done
- 51:19all this stuff, right? Yeah, I know how this works, you
- 51:23know. Well, how do you know that?
- 51:24Because I've been doing it. Or I talked to such and such and
- 51:27they taught me about it, you know, whatever.
- 51:29But those informal chats we talked about are very important.
- 51:34Ask about their roles, their challenges, and how your work
- 51:38intersects with them. I looked at you and I said.
- 51:45It you hear it right. I, I, I didn't say you're wrong,
- 51:48but it's not sex anyway, if you showed you in curiosity, people
- 51:54want to share with you, you know, like we had a person that
- 52:00would review our files and everything.
- 52:02And I told her one time I said, Hey, can I ask you a question?
- 52:06How, how, what, what do you do on your end?
- 52:12I know my end. Obviously I know what you tell
- 52:14me, but what do you do on your end?
- 52:18It says, why do this, this, this?
- 52:20And I said, can you tell me more about this?
- 52:22Because that's what I wanted to know more about.
- 52:24She's like, well, what do you want to know?
- 52:26I'm like everything, like I said, do you mind if I like ask
- 52:33you questions every now and then?
- 52:34She's like, no, I don't mind. I started asking her questions
- 52:38and then I learned a lot, right? I learned a lot and those inner,
- 52:47those informal conversations have helped me so much in my
- 52:49life. I can just tell you that and
- 52:52offer help or insight when you can.
- 52:54It builds goodwill and shows your team player again, Why is
- 52:59that important? Well, because other departments
- 53:03can come to you when there's an issue.
- 53:06Sometimes you don't have to have this interaction with the bosses
- 53:08that the employees can take care of certain things.
- 53:11Yeah, You know, it's just the way things work.
- 53:19The informal network is such an important thing because so much
- 53:24more gets done that way there. There's a story that I'd like to
- 53:28share with you, those of you who are veterans up there.
- 53:33Let me know if you agree or disagree with this.
- 53:36OK? But do you remember the E4
- 53:38mafias? I know you probably don't know
- 53:41what that means, Connor. I don't.
- 53:43But when you think of the E4 mafias, what comes to mind?
- 53:47E 4 is a rank specialist. I was saying 36 mafia.
- 53:50The no, that's the band. No.
- 53:51Yeah, that's yeah. E 4 is a rank right below
- 53:57Sergeant. OK, OK.
- 54:00And we'll call specialist because we're supposed to be
- 54:01specialist at our jobs. The E 4 Mafia is you just get
- 54:08things done totally just they never have.
- 54:15Like for example, let's say I lost a 5 gallon water jug,
- 54:19they're going to charge me for it right?
- 54:23You know. And then what?
- 54:24They're going to have like loan sharks if you don't pay it.
- 54:26No, we go find another water gallon jug.
- 54:32So you pay for what? To get another one.
- 54:36No, we never paid. Oh.
- 54:42Think. So you just robbed someone else?
- 54:45No, we procured that was a term. And that means?
- 54:50We found and brought back a lost water can that we thought we had
- 54:55lost, but we found it. Understand.
- 55:00Yeah. What?
- 55:03What are you understanding? So you just found it, just the
- 55:09abandoned 1 and you just took it?
- 55:11That's the story. OK, but you said you had to pay
- 55:17if you lost it, no? No, they were going to charge us
- 55:20if we couldn't find it, so we found it.
- 55:21Oh, so someone else lost it? Yes.
- 55:26So you stole someone else? 'S no, we procured.
- 55:31But we know it's not yours and you know everybody has one.
- 55:34Then obviously you would think so.
- 55:38But that that's what the for mafia does.
- 55:41We get things done. Yeah.
- 55:43OK, OK, that makes sense. When I I've told you the story.
- 55:49When I was in Fort Irwin and anti national training center in
- 55:52California over my summer trainings, we had a soldier die
- 55:57in. I went in and I took over the
- 55:58team. Even though we had sergeants in
- 56:00charge, I was the expert there to teach them how to do it.
- 56:04And another person yelled at me, you don't order him around,
- 56:07whatever, whatever. And the other Sergeant was like,
- 56:11he's the expert here. We need to listen to him.
- 56:13Even though the chief of psychiatry, the, the, the main
- 56:18psychiatrist on base had never done what we're I was teaching
- 56:21them. So sometimes when they have that
- 56:26that E 4 mafia, that specialist, they know their job and that's
- 56:31who you have to turn to to get things done.
- 56:34And you just you just get things done.
- 56:36Just, you know, you just get things done.
- 56:40So if you if you ever look up TikTok, look up, I'll tell you
- 56:42what on the break right now, we're going to take this look up
- 56:45eform mafia and I just want to show you some stuff real quick.
- 56:48OK. Yeah, You cool with that?
- 56:50I'm cool with that all. Right.
- 56:51So I'll tell you what, we're going to take a quick break, you
- 56:52guys, and we will be back after these messages.
- 56:56It's time for a break. Hot takes with the Murph man
- 56:58will return after these. Messages.

- 1:01:59Check out all our socials at Pure Hot Takes.
- 1:02:01Head over to purehottakes.com to stay locked in.
- 1:02:07Yeah. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:02:09Stay locked in, right? That's right, Yep, Yep, Yep.
- 1:02:13So on the break, I I I was trying Connor the E 4 mafia tik
- 1:02:17toks and what do you think the tactically tactically acquired I
- 1:02:27called it procured. They just don't care at all.
- 1:02:32No, they they do. But that's where you get the,
- 1:02:35the shamming, the professional shamming, the samurai shaming is
- 1:02:41the art of not being told what to do.
- 1:02:43So you get yourself busy doing something and then you just
- 1:02:46disappear. I'll give you an example of
- 1:02:51that. One time I wasn't a, a
- 1:02:53specialist, you know, actually, well, I was a specialist in the
- 1:03:00reserves and then I got demoted when I went active duty.
- 1:03:03That's how it works. They didn't have a position for
- 1:03:05me. They had a position for needs to
- 1:03:07be. So anyway, neither here nor
- 1:03:08there, but when you are told to do something, if someone says go
- 1:03:19work on that truck and you get it done quickly, what happens?
- 1:03:26You do something else. Right.
- 1:03:29But if I'm spending all day on that truck and I get done right,
- 1:03:33at the end of the day we're done right.
- 1:03:39Yep. So knowing how to do your job
- 1:03:45and do it right, but extend it out a little bit so you don't
- 1:03:50have to do too much. It's an art, believe me.
- 1:03:53And you know what's funny is when you go to NTC, you have to
- 1:03:57do an inspection on the vehicles they give you.
- 1:03:59And they already know what's wrong with the vehicle, OK,
- 1:04:02because they inspect it. Oh yeah.
- 1:04:06Then they rent it to us and we check it to make sure
- 1:04:08everything's good, and when we find something that's wrong,
- 1:04:11they have to fix it before we take it.
- 1:04:13But when we bring it back, if we didn't find that what was wrong
- 1:04:16with it, we have to end up paying to repair it.
- 1:04:20Damn. So a lot of those times you need
- 1:04:24a part again, we go technically acquire it.
- 1:04:27You know, all of a sudden another team is losing a water
- 1:04:31jug or whatever. You know, that's just how things
- 1:04:35work in the Army, but it's it's informal.
- 1:04:40It's not obvious. And not everyone does it.
- 1:04:44Majority do. But it just, yeah, like one time
- 1:04:50they, you know, they told me you need to go do this.
- 1:04:53And I said OK. And there was like, we don't
- 1:04:57care how it gets done, Just do it.
- 1:04:59Just do it. OK.
- 1:05:01And like, one of the things we had to do, we had to inventory
- 1:05:04medical supply equipment. What?
- 1:05:08Because I'm the medical unit and I didn't know these parts at
- 1:05:12all. So I got a bunch of parts that I
- 1:05:16did not know the names to. And I went looking for someone
- 1:05:20who was in that position. And I said, can you tell me what
- 1:05:23these parts are called? Oh, well, this.
- 1:05:26That's this. That's this.
- 1:05:27That's this. You know.
- 1:05:28Thank you. Went to go eat lunch.
- 1:05:32Came back. Yeah, I was.
- 1:05:36I got all the answers. Took me a while but I got them
- 1:05:39all right. Yeah, I took her a while.
- 1:05:43Took you 20 minutes to get there but you came back an hour later.
- 1:05:47Yeah, yeah, Something like that, right?
- 1:05:49That's a shammy that we're talking about.
- 1:05:51But am I going to get in trouble for doing something that I I
- 1:05:53did? I was doing something I was
- 1:05:55supposed to do right? Yeah.
- 1:05:58No one told me to do. I did it upon myself.
- 1:05:59Just like I took a piece of paper and just walked out and
- 1:06:01said, I know where I'm going, right?
- 1:06:04So one, one thing at NTC when we were talking, the, the mental
- 1:06:11health team there told us, hey, we have a grill here if you guys
- 1:06:13want to come and cook up, like have a little cookout, make some
- 1:06:15hamburgers or something, you know, like a break.
- 1:06:18And we said, hell yeah. So we told everybody we were
- 1:06:21over at the clinic with the other soldiers and we're having
- 1:06:24a cookout. And that's when the soldier died
- 1:06:28and we had a drop what we were doing right.
- 1:06:30And so we got busy with that. They came back on Monday morning
- 1:06:36and there's a grill with these tarred burgers and hotbugs.
- 1:06:40And you know what I mean? Like because we didn't have time
- 1:06:42to to not turn it off or whatever, we just covered in
- 1:06:45through water and then walked away.
- 1:06:46And you know, but all the heat just dried up on the meat.
- 1:06:50It was pretty funny. At least I thought it was all
- 1:06:55right. So we talked about the map,
- 1:06:57things you can do. Let's talk about those places
- 1:06:59where you'll have some pitfalls and you'll get burned.
- 1:07:10Let's talk about where you'll get burned.
- 1:07:12These are some common pitfalls. Only networking when you need
- 1:07:16something. Build relationships before you
- 1:07:19need them. A strong network is a long term
- 1:07:22investment. Keeping your head down.
- 1:07:24Visibility matters. Show up and connect.
- 1:07:28Your work won't speak for itself if no one knows you treating it
- 1:07:32like a transaction. Be curious, not calculating.
- 1:07:36The goal is to build genuine relationships.
- 1:07:39Danger zone identified. Back to Murph man for the
- 1:07:42warning. Watch out for these hidden traps
- 1:07:45before they scorch your progress.
- 1:07:49All right, so hey, welcome to Cap or to CPT.
- 1:07:53I say it's Captain. I don't know if that is or not,
- 1:07:54but. I think it is MJ Gonzalez.
- 1:07:58MJ is here. Cool.
- 1:08:00How's it going, MJ? So, yeah, you want to realize,
- 1:08:05you know, only networking when you need something is not going
- 1:08:09to build any relationship, OK. Because you're Stephen Covey,
- 1:08:16you're an emotional bank account.
- 1:08:18One of the things he says is you got to put in before you take
- 1:08:21out. If you're not giving in to the
- 1:08:23relationship and you're always asking for something, eventually
- 1:08:27you're going to bounce that check.
- 1:08:29So you need to put in before you ask for anything.
- 1:08:32The same thing with building relationships.
- 1:08:33You need to put in before you ask for favors.
- 1:08:36All right, long term investments, keeping your head
- 1:08:39down visibly matters. Show up and connect.
- 1:08:42Your work won't speak for itself.
- 1:08:44No one knows you. So if you just get there and,
- 1:08:48and you're working and you don't interact, you know, you come and
- 1:08:50you go, no one's going to know anything about you, you know,
- 1:08:57Oh, he does his job, That's it, you know, but if they can come
- 1:09:01back and go, oh, you know what? He's doing classes here, he's
- 1:09:04doing this, he's doing that, you know, whatever, whatever, he
- 1:09:06helped me with this, you know, it's makes you look better when
- 1:09:09it's time for promotions. And the last pitfall is treating
- 1:09:13it like a transaction. Be curious, not calculating, you
- 1:09:18know, not because I'm not trying to talk to you because I want
- 1:09:23something from you. I'm trying to talk to you
- 1:09:24because I want to get to know you.
- 1:09:26And I think that's very important to keep in mind.
- 1:09:29You know, informal is the keyword here today.
- 1:09:35Informal because everyone knows you do meetings and everything,
- 1:09:40but informal is where you can excel.
- 1:09:45OK? Informal is where you get to see
- 1:09:49people and do things. But I've been realizing it, you
- 1:09:52know, it's uninformal. So keep that in mind.
- 1:10:01You know, informal is, is the word of the day.
- 1:10:04OK, so here's another thing. When you, when you think about
- 1:10:09this stuff, all right, we have the heat map.
- 1:10:14We have the places you're going to fall and you're going to get
- 1:10:20burned. OK.
- 1:10:22But I want to talk about a little bit of reflection real
- 1:10:24quick. I want to talk about those
- 1:10:25things that will help you avoid following those pitfalls in a
- 1:10:30segment called the heat Shields. Intentional preparation is your
- 1:10:43primary defense in professional networking.
- 1:10:46By dedicating time to research and self-assessment, you build a
- 1:10:50protective barrier against the negative impacts of
- 1:10:52unpreparedness or external pressure.
- 1:10:55Prioritize preparation. Dedicate focused, specific time
- 1:10:59before any networking engagement to conduct research and engage
- 1:11:03in self-assessment. Mitigate risks.
- 1:11:06Use this intentional prep to shield yourself from the
- 1:11:09negative impacts of being unprepared or feeling reactive.
- 1:11:13Build resilience. Approach the next stage of your
- 1:11:17professional growth with a proactive mindset that guards
- 1:11:20against external pressures. Armor up before stepping into
- 1:11:24the line of fire. All right, intentional
- 1:11:28preparation is your primary defense in a professional
- 1:11:31networking. By dedicating time to research
- 1:11:33and self-assessment, you build a protective barrier against the
- 1:11:36negative impacts of unpreparedness or external
- 1:11:38pressure. What does that mean?
- 1:11:41Prioritize preparation. Dedicate focus specific time
- 1:11:44before any networking engagement to conduct research and engage
- 1:11:47in self-assessment. Why am I reaching out to this
- 1:11:52other person? What am I?
- 1:11:53What's my goal? Is it just to make a friend or
- 1:11:56is it so I can understand a position, understand a process,
- 1:12:00whatever the case may be? OK.
- 1:12:03And when you do that, you go into relationship more prepared.
- 1:12:10The the examples I like to use is the ticket lawyer to lunch,
- 1:12:13right? You may not have money to pay
- 1:12:15for a lawyer, but if you have friends or lawyers, take them to
- 1:12:17lunch, they buy them lunch and they're going to know.
- 1:12:20You're going to ask them questions legally, right?
- 1:12:25But make sure you don't waste your time.
- 1:12:26Don't walk up there and be like, oh, you know, I don't know.
- 1:12:29But no, you need to know what you're going to talk about.
- 1:12:32Mitigate the risks. Use the intentional prep to
- 1:12:34shield yourself from the negative impacts of being
- 1:12:36unprepared and feeling reactive. OK, intentional prep.
- 1:12:42It's informal, but it's intentional.
- 1:12:48It's not a a scheduled meeting, but you're going there with a
- 1:12:52purpose. Can it be just?
- 1:12:55Well, it's a scheduled meeting if you're going to go out.
- 1:12:58What I'm saying is you don't schedule the meeting when it
- 1:13:01happens. You already know what you're
- 1:13:02doing. You already have it prepared.
- 1:13:04You already have an idea what you want to tell that person now
- 1:13:07that you go looking for them at the water cooler.
- 1:13:10It's just if I bump into them, I'm going to ask them these
- 1:13:11questions, you know, and then build resilience.
- 1:13:15Approach the next stage of your professional growth with a
- 1:13:17proactive mindset that guards against external pressures.
- 1:13:21OK, know that life is not perfect and you're going to have
- 1:13:27issues and you're going to need to talk to people and you're
- 1:13:29going to need to make friends. You need to going to have to be
- 1:13:33saved, so to speak in some situations.
- 1:13:36OK, that resilience is such a big deal because so many
- 1:13:42different things are happening. You need that network.
- 1:13:45Do you agree with me on that, Connor?
- 1:13:47You need the network. Yeah, I agree.
- 1:13:49You agree? OK.
- 1:13:54On Friday last week, was it? No, it wasn't on Friday, it was
- 1:13:59Tuesday. Wanted to go see our friend at
- 1:14:01the at the business. I don't want to see what I was
- 1:14:04doing but. Friday No.
- 1:14:08No Friday. She cancelled.
- 1:14:09It was Tuesday because it was this week.
- 1:14:12It was a couple days ago. Oh, that's right.
- 1:14:16Anyway, I want to do something big, really big, and I went to
- 1:14:24go talk to a friend of mine who's involved in something that
- 1:14:27I'm trying to get with, and I laid out my plan for her.
- 1:14:31Not only does she think it would work for one event, she said it
- 1:14:34would work for so many events that I need to go talk to the
- 1:14:39people at the city and try to get some contracts with them.
- 1:14:42Right? Yeah, that was a formal meeting.
- 1:14:45We set up a meeting, but it was that relationship I had built
- 1:14:49with her overtime that allowed me to go in and talk to her
- 1:14:52about that and spend an hour talking to her.
- 1:14:54Now I offered a you want me to get bring you a drink?
- 1:14:56You want me to bring you some food?
- 1:14:57You know, no, I'm good. I'm good, OK.
- 1:15:01And she knew where I was going. So doing that it, you know, you
- 1:15:09never know what's going to happen now and put yourself on
- 1:15:12the limb, put yourself out there.
- 1:15:14Try and meet people, make those networks, and I'm one of the
- 1:15:19people that I met and Connor can.
- 1:15:20I don't know if you remember the first time Tony called me.
- 1:15:23No. When I was sitting at the
- 1:15:26podcast last summer, I was like, where can do the podcast?
- 1:15:31And there was this post on TikTok that said El Paso content
- 1:15:34creators come and join us. I hadn't even started yet but
- 1:15:38I'm like OK. I guess it might.
- 1:15:40As well. Yeah, might as well.
- 1:15:42Well, about a month after I started, he reached out to me
- 1:15:46and he told me what he was doing and I loved it.
- 1:15:50It was such an amazing thing. I got to interview people, I got
- 1:15:54to go to events with the city, I got to make animations and you
- 1:15:59know, just it it. It was nice.
- 1:16:02It was, you know, he had to leave town.
- 1:16:04So, you know, we didn't keep it up.
- 1:16:05But the, the whole process taught me so much.
- 1:16:12You know, I'm, I'm grateful to him.
- 1:16:17What's funny about it is he put me on TV, like you could find me
- 1:16:23on TV. And then like military broadcast
- 1:16:25radio, that's another one. And I also put you on TV for MBR
- 1:16:30show. Well, that one actually put us
- 1:16:31on TV. They have that one's on.
- 1:16:34TV You might actually be watching us on Roku TV right
- 1:16:36now. How cool is that?
- 1:16:37Great. That is cool.
- 1:16:40Will the show as a viewer? No, right, Since it's not like
- 1:16:43an account. No, they don't want to show how
- 1:16:45many people are watching. It's like you're watching Hulu.
- 1:16:47You don't know how many people are watching the show, OK?
- 1:16:49That's what I thought. Makes sense, right?
- 1:16:54But we we were told a lot of people are watching this, right?
- 1:17:02Yeah. So hello, hello out there in
- 1:17:06Roku land. But building these informal
- 1:17:11relationships become formal relationships become something
- 1:17:16down the road. And I, Connor, can tell you I
- 1:17:20have experience in so many things.
- 1:17:25I I I'm not really a specialist in anything, but I know a lot.
- 1:17:28He's good at his stuff, yeah. Yeah, right.
- 1:17:32Like my brother, he could build a house if he wanted to.
- 1:17:35He knows how to do everything right and he has a network of
- 1:17:42friends that he calls on when he wants to do stuff.
- 1:17:45Hey, I need someone to help me with laying concrete.
- 1:17:49Boom, they're here. You know what I mean?
- 1:17:51Literally, that's the kind of stuff that he does.
- 1:17:54You know, have another friend on the the guy who's a DJ that I
- 1:17:57told you about One day he was late to something we were doing.
- 1:18:01And what were you doing? Was I was putting my roof up.
- 1:18:05I'm like, yeah, Roof. Yeah.
- 1:18:07How many people were helping you or what?
- 1:18:09Like, but I just might be by myself.
- 1:18:12He put a roof on by himself. That's crazy, right?
- 1:18:19I'm like, you need to find friends bro, you know?
- 1:18:24Yeah, you know when you get hobbies that you do like by
- 1:18:27yourself because you have no one else to go with, so you just
- 1:18:30make like those lonely hobbies. Oh, hobbies.
- 1:18:34Yeah, hobbies. OK, that's not what I heard.
- 1:18:36What you hear? Hobbies.
- 1:18:39Oh no. OK, so go when it was.
- 1:18:43I'm sorry, my brain was like hotties.
- 1:18:45And you so tell me about intersex, OK?
- 1:18:50So tell me about your hobby. No, not my.
- 1:18:53Just like. No, no.
- 1:18:54What you tell me what you're. You get a hobby when you're
- 1:18:56lonely, you know you do something to like fill your day
- 1:19:01up since you have nothing else to do.
- 1:19:03You know what? I.
- 1:19:04Mean, right, But that's not networking with other people.
- 1:19:08Well, you get stuff done. He built a house.
- 1:19:10Yeah. Well.
- 1:19:12It's like the notebook. I don't know what the reference
- 1:19:17is. I know the notebook.
- 1:19:17I don't know what you're referring to in the movie.
- 1:19:20I know the notebook, but I don't know what you're referring to.
- 1:19:24Him building a house. Is that what he does in there?
- 1:19:26I don't remember that. You know when he's like the meme
- 1:19:30where you just stand in front of the house?
- 1:19:32The White House? Yeah, that's her dream house.
- 1:19:34He built it. Oh, by himself.
- 1:19:37Oh, and it's even sadder now. Yeah, he built to her for a
- 1:19:42whole year, a letter a day, and she's getting married to someone
- 1:19:46else. And then at the end, obviously
- 1:19:49they get together. Yeah, but it's sad.
- 1:19:53That that is. Because they were talking and
- 1:19:54then she really said, told him at the beginning of the movie
- 1:19:58what her dream house was and he built it.
- 1:20:01And he built it for her. Yes, literally he built it for
- 1:20:03her even though she was gone. Now you know what scares me
- 1:20:07though, is I knew the reference to that.
- 1:20:10But you know the movie like you know the movie.
- 1:20:16How many times have you seen it? Once.
- 1:20:18Once, OK, because I don't hear you talking about because if
- 1:20:22you've been watching this show. I'm a romance movie guy.
- 1:20:24If you've been watching this show forever, anytime I ask him
- 1:20:26a question, even I want his opinion.
- 1:20:28What do you think about the burger?
- 1:20:29I don't know. I.
- 1:20:31Mean it was a burger. That's that's what I would say.
- 1:20:34OK, we, we actually had a channel called Murphy's
- 1:20:38Traveling because we were traveling fairly frequently.
- 1:20:42Yeah. And one of the things we would
- 1:20:44do was we would review burgers, but I stopped after, like, the
- 1:20:48second or third stop coming. All right, Connor, compare that
- 1:20:50to, I don't remember the other place.
- 1:20:52OK, How do you like this one? It's a burger.
- 1:20:56It's good. Yeah, it's just a burger.
- 1:20:59Now that you're older, can you tell the difference between
- 1:21:02burgers? Oh yeah, I I was able to tell
- 1:21:05the difference. But when I ask your opinion,
- 1:21:08like for example, if I ask you right now, what's your, what's
- 1:21:10your favorite burger? Well, you can't put me you got
- 1:21:22to like fast food restaurant. Like what are we talking about?
- 1:21:25Or just any? If you want to eat the best
- 1:21:27burger, where do you go in your opinion?
- 1:21:31No matter the distance. No, just yeah.
- 1:21:33Best burger? I want to say magnolias but.
- 1:21:45McDonald's, see what I mean? It's kind of Magnolias is a
- 1:21:53restaurant at the Fort Greens in Las Vegas and we ate there.
- 1:21:56We were there for two weeks and we probably ate there seven
- 1:21:58times, I mean. No, we ate there every day.
- 1:22:00Yeah. No, not every day.
- 1:22:01We literally ate that for breakfast every every time.
- 1:22:06Yes we did. We did.
- 1:22:08It wasn't that much. Sean, if we didn't eat it for
- 1:22:11breakfast, we ate it for dinner. OK.
- 1:22:13Well, I guess all right. Yeah, maybe.
- 1:22:15Yeah, if we didn't, if we didn't eat it in the beginning of the
- 1:22:18day, we would do our stuff, come back to the hotel and it's right
- 1:22:21there. So we just go.
- 1:22:23I I guess it's one of the upstairs and make no leases on
- 1:22:26the bottom floor with the casino and all the yeah.
- 1:22:28So yeah, you know, we just, we had to stop by.
- 1:22:31OK. So we do a lot at that point.
- 1:22:33And you stop by the Chicago pub thing to get the cub.
- 1:22:39I know what it was. I don't remember either, but
- 1:22:41yeah. We ate magnolias.
- 1:22:45He just got through saying McDonald's is his favorite
- 1:22:47burger. Now watch this.
- 1:22:51What a burger. Denny's, Chili's.
- 1:22:55Yeah. In and out.
- 1:22:56Nah, I don't really eat in and out.
- 1:22:59OK, I know, but I just named 4 burgers.
- 1:23:04You love the burgers at Denny's? You you like the burgers at
- 1:23:08Chili's? It's.
- 1:23:10Because I've talked about this before, I like burgers.
- 1:23:15That's my favorite food. But they all, every restaurant
- 1:23:20has something I like. Like they're all good, but
- 1:23:24they're just something that makes it better.
- 1:23:26Well, like last night, I took him to Landry's for the first
- 1:23:30time. I was craving some seafood.
- 1:23:34We were pulling into the parking lot and I told you what?
- 1:23:39Then I'm going to eat good and I get a.
- 1:23:41Burger, I said you're not going to get a burger.
- 1:23:43But he also doesn't like seafood.
- 1:23:46And that's all I just is. It's just seafood.
- 1:23:48And if you don't like seafood and you go there, the only
- 1:23:52options are a burger, chicken Alfredo or chicken or shrimp or
- 1:23:59steak. Those are my only options I had
- 1:24:02out of the whole out of the whole menu starters and
- 1:24:05everything started to dessert. So you had steak.
- 1:24:07How was your steak? That was good.
- 1:24:09It was good 14 oz compared to other steaks that you had.
- 1:24:20Oh, I don't remember. I don't really eat steak that
- 1:24:25much. No, I know we don't but.
- 1:24:28Where have I got to eat steaks? Oh my God, I'll.
- 1:24:31I'll think about that later. We'll talk about it after
- 1:24:33because. I don't know.
- 1:24:35We went to Billy Cruz, we went to Cattlemen's, we went to.
- 1:24:38Billy Cruz and. The Big Texan.
- 1:24:46What I put too much A1 sauce on it?
- 1:24:48So first of all, it wasn't A1 sauce.
- 1:24:49What was it? It was their sauce.
- 1:24:51I prefer A1 sauce. Yeah, no, I put too much of the
- 1:24:54sauce and it cold down and it just ruined it for me.
- 1:24:56Yeah. But he this is.
- 1:24:58My first time. He ate about 3 1/2 lbs.
- 1:25:00So of the four and a half I ate about, I was 10 lbs Is shy.
- 1:25:05I don't want to do that again one time.
- 1:25:08One time anyway. Again, it's the same $2.00 each,
- 1:25:15Yeah. Yeah, I don't have a stomach for
- 1:25:18that. I would rather sit at a table by
- 1:25:21the stage and just eat my steak and just relax and watch you eat
- 1:25:25all that. Well, when you like.
- 1:25:27Because it's not just a steak. It's like starters all like
- 1:25:29little sides. Also, yeah, like corn.
- 1:25:33No fried shrimp. No fried shrimp, baked potato,
- 1:25:36bread and salad. Oh.
- 1:25:38Where do you get corn from? When the hell did I eat corn?
- 1:25:42I didn't say joke, sorry. But let's go back to the show,
- 1:25:48Connor. Yeah, I kind of forgot we're
- 1:25:52live right now. Yeah, just this.
- 1:25:54What are? We talking about your friend
- 1:25:56that built a house, built a roof.
- 1:25:58The fact that one friend can build a house and he can call
- 1:26:01anyone whoever he wants and they'll come help him.
- 1:26:04Another friend was putting a roof up and didn't have anyone
- 1:26:06to call. That was the point of the story.
- 1:26:09Yeah. And then you come up with the
- 1:26:11hobbies. No hobbies.
- 1:26:13Hobbies. And we went down that path.
- 1:26:16But I do want to address the hobby part.
- 1:26:18How do we go from building a house like?
- 1:26:22Because you said the. Someone being lonely.
- 1:26:23And then we went to eating burgers.
- 1:26:29Because we're talking about opinions.
- 1:26:30I know, but but it's just so funny.
- 1:26:33Going back to going back to the show, the friend who had no
- 1:26:38friends to call, it's not that he didn't have any friends.
- 1:26:40He's not lonely. He just does things by himself.
- 1:26:43He doesn't count on a Team God. Dude, I can never.
- 1:26:46But going back to the hobbies, if you don't have a life, if you
- 1:26:52want to do something, get a hobby.
- 1:26:56But not only get a hobby, go and meet people doing that hobby.
- 1:27:05OK? Like for example, if you're
- 1:27:09doing crocheting, go to the libraries.
- 1:27:11They have crocheting clubs, OK? And you'll learn how to crochet
- 1:27:19and it opens up a new group of friends to you completely new.
- 1:27:24That's what's so really cool about it is doing a new hobby.
- 1:27:30You mean new people? When I started this podcast, I
- 1:27:35honestly just, I really don't know why I did it, but I just
- 1:27:38did it. And right now I've made a lot of
- 1:27:44friends because of this. I don't know if you would agree
- 1:27:47or disagree with that. I would agree.
- 1:27:50And I'm doing things and I'm much more active than I used to
- 1:27:53be. That's true.
- 1:27:57Because of the one hobby now I I showed my business card to a
- 1:28:01friend of mine, the one we went to go meet on Tuesday and she
- 1:28:05looked at the back and she's like, that's a lot.
- 1:28:08Yeah, she did. I was like, yeah.
- 1:28:10Yeah, but that's just who I am. You know, everything is tied
- 1:28:14together, but. Actually a business card should
- 1:28:17only have like the name and business.
- 1:28:21Well, the front has that. Well, yeah, that's why I'm like.
- 1:28:23So why waste the back? Just let people know what you're
- 1:28:25doing. True, I've I don't do business
- 1:28:28cards but. But, but do you think about that
- 1:28:30right? Yeah, well, I mean you can put
- 1:28:32on the back like the socials for all those instead.
- 1:28:37Yeah, but I don't have socials for all that yet.
- 1:28:40It's not. They don't.
- 1:28:40Those are jobs that you don't need socials for.
- 1:28:43My hot, my podcast. I have the socials on my
- 1:28:45business card. That's true, I forgot it's for
- 1:28:48that and not this. Yeah, so anyway, get a hobby, do
- 1:28:54something and you make friends. But informal networking can lead
- 1:28:58you to place that you never even considered right.
- 1:29:01Yeah. Working with Tony at stream 915.
- 1:29:05I ended up working with party halls to do MC events there and
- 1:29:08everything right? OK, boom, done.
- 1:29:12You know, going back to learning how to do stuff.
- 1:29:18When I went to the first party hall the first time, she asked
- 1:29:22me to go to the DJ booth and look how everything worked,
- 1:29:26right? I've never been behind the DJ
- 1:29:29booth ever. And I'm like, OK, I know about
- 1:29:34this. I know about that.
- 1:29:34I've been researching my equipment, so on and so forth.
- 1:29:38And then she comes back and says this is our lighting system.
- 1:29:40If we could, someone messed us up, we're going to have to pay
- 1:29:42someone to come and fix it. And they were charged several
- 1:29:47$100 to do that. I fixed it in 10 minutes.
- 1:29:54And she's like, I thought you didn't know how to do anything.
- 1:29:56I don't. But I understand technology.
- 1:30:01I understand files. And, you know, I I was able to
- 1:30:04fix it, recover it, you know, and she's like, wow, that, you
- 1:30:09know, she said we definitely have to work together.
- 1:30:11And that's been since Jelena. I haven't done anything because
- 1:30:14I've just been so busy. I just realized this last night.
- 1:30:17I need to call her. But I I am doing too many
- 1:30:22things. But from one idea, everything
- 1:30:27has started right. Yeah.
- 1:30:30Crazy. All right, so getting back to
- 1:30:34the show, we're going to talk about our next step, which is
- 1:30:39the digital inferno. I'm sorry, the afterburn.
- 1:30:43The afterburn. I thought we were going to have
- 1:30:44to burn. No, we're still, we're still
- 1:30:47trying to protect us from the pitfalls.
- 1:30:48Yeah. So let's let's talk about that.
- 1:30:56I'm like, oh, I thought it was further ahead than I than I
- 1:30:59thought. Nope, Nope.
- 1:31:01Right. All right, so let's get to the
- 1:31:05afterburn and those questions we can reflect on what we've
- 1:31:08learned today. In today's Afterburn, here are
- 1:31:19some questions for you to reflect on.
- 1:31:21Who in my organization do I admire and why?
- 1:31:25What's 1 relationship I can strengthen this month?
- 1:31:29How can I add value to someone else's work?
- 1:31:32Review the embers to find where the real growth happened.
- 1:31:39All right, very important. Who in my organization do I
- 1:31:43admire and why? You know, can you turn off
- 1:31:48notifications please? Yeah, I was like just about to
- 1:31:51do that. I just made it for the hour.
- 1:31:53I had a Co worker that was amazing at his job.
- 1:31:57He was really good, had great insight and I wanted to learn
- 1:32:03from him, you know, and to be cocky.
- 1:32:09I'm, I'm, I'm pretty good at what I do.
- 1:32:11For me to say someone is better than me is a hard thing to say
- 1:32:16for counselling. Oh, Oh yeah.
- 1:32:21To say someone's better than me is very hard to admit, but I had
- 1:32:25no problem admitting it for this person.
- 1:32:27He was that good. Sometimes.
- 1:32:29You know there's always someone better, right?
- 1:32:33He taught me a lot. 1 of my biggest kryptonites, my biggest
- 1:32:38weaknesses is working with boys who are defiant that remind me
- 1:32:41of me when I was a kid. Defiant.
- 1:32:43Yeah. What's that?
- 1:32:46I'm not a big English vocabulary guy.
- 1:32:48That's a big word. Defiant is you're always
- 1:32:51constantly fighting the the issue, whatever it is.
- 1:32:56You go against the rules. You don't follow the rules.
- 1:32:58You make your own rules. You're defiant against them.
- 1:33:02Much like you and I have conversations, you're always
- 1:33:04like, no, no, you're very defiant in that way.
- 1:33:08You know you don't agree with me and you don't.
- 1:33:10It bothers you to admit I'm right, right, Sometimes.
- 1:33:15And we get into arguments. But this guy was so good that I
- 1:33:21didn't have a problem saying he was better than me.
- 1:33:23None. And I learned from him and you
- 1:33:28know, he actually, I mean, to the point where I was going to
- 1:33:33open up a daycare. He was teaching me all that
- 1:33:36something that wasn't related to my job, but you know, to open a
- 1:33:39daycare in a business and everything.
- 1:33:41It just didn't, didn't happen. But you know, I, I think I would
- 1:33:46have had a successful daycare. You know, when there's issues,
- 1:33:50you have to go get somebody. I was going to have everybody
- 1:33:53carrying radios so you can radio each other, you know, stuff like
- 1:33:56that. That was, you know, going to
- 1:33:57keep communication going. I knew I would have succeeded.
- 1:34:00All right, what's 1 relationship I can strengthen this month?
- 1:34:05You know, there's some people that you look at and you're not
- 1:34:07friendly with them, but, you know, maybe I should try harder.
- 1:34:14OK. And last but not least, how can
- 1:34:17I add value to someone else's work?
- 1:34:21When you see someone struggling, do you approach them or should
- 1:34:26you approach them? It depends what they're
- 1:34:30struggling about. It might not be something you
- 1:34:33know. I'll, I'll give you that it, it
- 1:34:34depends on what they're struggling with.
- 1:34:36Yeah. And you might know how to do it.
- 1:34:40Yeah. Right.
- 1:34:41I mean I'll go up anyways and ask, but if it's something I
- 1:34:44can't help with then sorry, can't really do anything about
- 1:34:48that. But sometimes asking or offering
- 1:34:52help is just comforting to know someone else cares.
- 1:34:58Like I don't know what you're doing but I can try to help you.
- 1:35:01I. Mean everybody tries to ask for
- 1:35:03help, like to help them and they don't take it.
- 1:35:07Right, so you know, asking for help is probably the hardest
- 1:35:10thing for anybody. Know your limitations and know
- 1:35:15what you need help with when you're seeing them.
- 1:35:18You're working on things, OK, Going and finding someone that
- 1:35:26needs help that you can strengthen the relationship
- 1:35:29with, or maybe just someone to vent with, right?
- 1:35:33Let them express themselves to you, right?
- 1:35:36Yeah. Then you can do that and you'll
- 1:35:40see that what it's saying you're restricted because I'm I, I, I I
- 1:36:01don't understand TikTok. I really don't that's.
- 1:36:04Funny. Because I'm live on another
- 1:36:06TikTok with with MBR and we're not, as far as I know, we're not
- 1:36:09restricted there. Well, you won't know.
- 1:36:12I know so, but he would have said something.
- 1:36:14I would hope, unless if he's not here.
- 1:36:16Anyway, so ask yourself, who at work can I strengthen this
- 1:36:20relationship with? Right, Yes, that that's
- 1:36:24something you want to do. So I'll tell you what the next
- 1:36:29thing I want to talk about is technology in our digital
- 1:36:32inferno. So let me let's take a quick
- 1:36:36break and we'll be back after these messages.
- 1:36:41It's time for a break. Hot takes with the Murph man
- 1:36:43will return after these. Messages.

- 1:41:11I I forget you make AI stuff. What do you see me talking like?
- 1:41:16What? Yeah, I looked.
- 1:41:17I'm like, that's not you. But it works, right?
- 1:41:25Yeah. And Speaking of technology, just
- 1:41:26get to today's digital inferno. Your internal networking should
- 1:41:40leverage digital tools for efficiency.
- 1:41:42LinkedIn Research roles and current projects of colleagues
- 1:41:46outside your department to find common ground before scheduling
- 1:41:49a chat. Slack Microsoft Teams offer
- 1:41:52specific, documented help on cross functional projects to
- 1:41:56increase visibility and goodwill beyond your immediate team.
- 1:42:00Virtual meeting tools Use video conferencing for casual coffee
- 1:42:04chats when in person meetings aren't feasible.
- 1:42:06Leverage the machine before the tech leaves you behind.
- 1:42:12All right, LinkedIn, there are so many places you can go to and
- 1:42:20get information on jobs and everything's like if you want to
- 1:42:23go work somewhere, look up that that job and e-mail people who
- 1:42:27work there and say, hey, what do you think about this job or what
- 1:42:32can you tell me about this job? Oh, you know what I know a
- 1:42:35friend who did that job and this is what he did.
- 1:42:37Oh, thank you. You know, and you get and just
- 1:42:39reach out to people on and that's what LinkedIn is.
- 1:42:41It's you're LinkedIn together. So LinkedIn is to see jobs and
- 1:42:48text people in that job to see how.
- 1:42:50Well, the environment is we want to build your network.
- 1:42:52So like if. If you should, you know, get the
- 1:42:56job first before you build it. No, no, but I'm going for a job
- 1:42:59interview at your company and I'd like to know do anything
- 1:43:03about this position, you know, and just.
- 1:43:08But is that better than Indeed for looking for jobs or?
- 1:43:11No, no, it's not about looking for the job.
- 1:43:13It is when you're going to apply for a position, go find someone
- 1:43:16at that, at that company and ask them about the positions.
- 1:43:22Like I had this one girl that I talked to on LinkedIn.
- 1:43:26I think I know her, but I, I, I don't remember her, but we'll
- 1:43:32chat every now and then, right? And she'll like something I like
- 1:43:35something she says and so on and so forth.
- 1:43:37But if you really use LinkedIn, it is amazing to build a network
- 1:43:41of people in that position. Like you want to start a
- 1:43:42business, right? Get everyone who does
- 1:43:47entertainment to start adding every because that gets your
- 1:43:51name out there, right? So there's nothing to do with
- 1:43:53LinkedIn Slacker myself. Teams offer specific documented
- 1:43:59help to cross functional projects to increase visibility
- 1:44:01and goodwill beyond your immediate team.
- 1:44:04You know, I can't be there, but let's come on to Google meets
- 1:44:08and let's work it out. We can share screens and
- 1:44:11everything. I do that with so many friends
- 1:44:14it's crazy. You know, I have one friend who
- 1:44:18is like I I don't understand technology.
- 1:44:20I need to do this I'm here come on, I'll help you.
- 1:44:22And before I know it, boom, then I'm doing it right.
- 1:44:25I have another friend who's like, I have no idea how to get
- 1:44:28this started here, Let me show you, you know and say, wait, how
- 1:44:32do you know? I'm like, I'm going to show you
- 1:44:33how to use AI, you know, so that Slack or Microsoft Teams, Google
- 1:44:38meets, Zoom, whatever, same thing.
- 1:44:41And virtual meeting tools use virtual conferencing for casual
- 1:44:45coffee chats when in person meetings aren't feasible.
- 1:44:49You know, one thing that happened during COVID?
- 1:44:58This Zoom came on. I had never heard of Zoom in my
- 1:45:01life and everyone wouldn't meet on Zoom.
- 1:45:07Yeah. And what was so amazing about it
- 1:45:11was can Can you imagine being the business of Zoom?
- 1:45:17COVID hits and everyone wants to use you.
- 1:45:21Do you know how many servers they had to add to make that
- 1:45:26all? The times it crashed, yeah, I
- 1:45:28remember, you know, trust me, I I remember.
- 1:45:32I think we all do. It was bad.
- 1:45:36The beginning of COVID. We tried doing Zoom for a school
- 1:45:39and we couldn't. Yeah.
- 1:45:41We really had to get off school for like a month after spring
- 1:45:45break because we couldn't do any online classes.
- 1:45:48No. Nothing.
- 1:45:49Nobody was set up for that. Yeah, you know.
- 1:45:51I think did we end it just there like the school year?
- 1:45:56Yeah, Yeah, right. Actually, yes, because after
- 1:45:58spring break that was it. That was it.
- 1:46:00That was my 7th grade. March 20th.
- 1:46:03Boom when I go back to work. At all.
- 1:46:05And then and then eighth grade the next year, they tried, yeah,
- 1:46:10doing it. And then, yeah.
- 1:46:11And then in October, when El Paso was the highest ranked
- 1:46:15COVID infection in the world. My birthday month.
- 1:46:18We went to school. We went back to school.
- 1:46:21That, yeah. Really.
- 1:46:22I thought it was like September. No, it was October anyway.
- 1:46:28August. That's a throwback to another
- 1:46:32conversation, video conferencing during COVID.
- 1:46:38We would literally meet with friends and that's how we would
- 1:46:40talk. OK.
- 1:46:42My brother was living with me the time he wanted to be invite
- 1:46:44friends over. And you know, people in El Paso
- 1:46:47were turning other people in for having parties and get
- 1:46:48togethers. It was so stupid.
- 1:46:50I mean, it happened worldwide or countrywide, But so I told my
- 1:46:54brother, you can sit in the in the garage.
- 1:46:56You know, it's, it's a car park, not really garage.
- 1:46:58And you can sit in all four corners.
- 1:47:00And talk. And talk, you know, just stay
- 1:47:03away from each other because I don't want to bring the bug into
- 1:47:04my house. I had sanitizer item, the gallon
- 1:47:08sanitizer, you know, like crazy. Toilet paper.
- 1:47:13No, I didn't. No.
- 1:47:16Ever since then I've been paranoid.
- 1:47:17I always had enough toilet paper.
- 1:47:18I'm not going to get stuck without it again.
- 1:47:21It's crazy. I don't even know why that
- 1:47:22happened. I don't.
- 1:47:25I don't know either. Out of all things, toilet paper
- 1:47:27is what people took. Yeah, like no food, no nothing.
- 1:47:32Everybody took toilet paper. That was the headline.
- 1:47:34News was toilet paper. It was.
- 1:47:37It was. I don't know for what I I'm
- 1:47:39still lost on that. You know, it was a year out of
- 1:47:45our lives that we were really restricted, nine months.
- 1:47:50But the kids were restricted. They lost all social skills, all
- 1:47:56of them. Even you do.
- 1:47:58Oh yeah, me definitely. You know, it was so funny.
- 1:48:03I, I, I don't know if you remember this or not, but when
- 1:48:08during COVID, I would do Uber and stuff and I would take him
- 1:48:11with me sometimes. And yeah, I had my, my regulars
- 1:48:14that would pick up and everything and we had rules and,
- 1:48:17you know, whatever. So I got him out of the house so
- 1:48:21he wasn't stuck here 24/7, right?
- 1:48:24But one day when I said let's let's go out, he comes out of
- 1:48:29his room and his pants are about this short.
- 1:48:34He's wearing high waters. He had grown like 4 inches in
- 1:48:39the time frame that we were wearing a school uniforms.
- 1:48:44And I'm like, we need to go buy you some clothes.
- 1:48:47Yeah, just enough for high school.
- 1:48:50Yeah. I was, I was a big boy.
- 1:48:56I was a little chubby. No, yes.
- 1:49:01My 8th grade yes Dude when I had to start yes.
- 1:49:05What the fuck? OK, uh, sorry, it's a friend.
- 1:49:12I don't have the photo anymore, umm, since I got the new phone.
- 1:49:17But if you compare it to all my others, yeah, I was a little
- 1:49:20chunkier compared to 7th grade. Well, you weren't active, you
- 1:49:24were stuck at home. No buddy compared to 7th grade.
- 1:49:27Never say you were chubby. 7th grade when I was in football and
- 1:49:30actually did stuff at school. Yeah, I don't think you were
- 1:49:33Tubby, OK. I was a skinny, I would like the
- 1:49:37kid from The Good Dinosaur, that little caveman guy.
- 1:49:43And then I turn into like a chubbier Young Sheldon.
- 1:49:53I I don't know what he's referencing.
- 1:49:55You know he doesn't. You don't know John Shelton.
- 1:50:05He's younger, I'm older. He thinks I don't know
- 1:50:08everything about what he does. We were at a restaurant the
- 1:50:12other day, and they had the soda machines where you have to
- 1:50:15choose your drink and you have to press it before you.
- 1:50:20So he goes, hey, you need to press the one you go.
- 1:50:22I'm like, dude, this is. I'm not coming out of a coma.
- 1:50:26You know, I know how technology works.
- 1:50:28And, you know, sometimes you just like, like right now.
- 1:50:32Yeah. Just like, you don't know who
- 1:50:35the young Sheldon is. Of course I do.
- 1:50:36That's because you seem confused because you're like, I don't
- 1:50:39know what he's talking about. I like, I don't know what you're
- 1:50:40talking about. Like how that has anything to do
- 1:50:43with? You seventh photo or my 7th
- 1:50:46grade photo to my 8th grade photo?
- 1:50:50OK that's what I'm talking about.
- 1:50:51COVID messed me up that bad. Yeah, OK, a little OK, but you
- 1:50:56weren't chubby is my point. Dude.
- 1:50:58You were a little thicker because you weren't exercising,
- 1:51:01but you weren't chubby. I was thicker as in thicker.
- 1:51:05I was like instead of this it was.
- 1:51:09You know, anyway. Still remember when you made me
- 1:51:19comb my hair? Comb your hair every time.
- 1:51:26What are you talking about? You always made me comb my hair
- 1:51:28in middle school. Yeah, because you should go with
- 1:51:33your hair called. No, it's called curls for a
- 1:51:37reason. And it's called showering and
- 1:51:39then maintaining it after you don't understand because you got
- 1:51:46to slick back right now or to the side, to the side.
- 1:51:50Yeah, I wish I had more hair. Yes, thank you for wrenching
- 1:51:53that anyway. Don't worry, we both got big.
- 1:51:55Foreheads. You got A5 head dude.
- 1:51:59Shut up anyways. You weren't expecting that one,
- 1:52:03were you? No, I wasn't.
- 1:52:05Anyways. You guys understand that like
- 1:52:08forehead and it's 5 head because it's so big.
- 1:52:11Damn you just did that right now you're A5 head.
- 1:52:13Well, I'm old. I got the receiving hairline.
- 1:52:15Duh. I got it from you.
- 1:52:18I'm not even old. I just got it from you.
- 1:52:21Not yet. Stop every time it's so windy
- 1:52:25outside. Well, let me let me get to
- 1:52:27today's final burn so we can finish up.
- 1:52:28OK. Yes, because we have things to
- 1:52:30do. Go ahead.
- 1:52:31Here's today's final burn, you guys.
- 1:52:43The final take from today's discussion is your network isn't
- 1:52:47just who you know, it's who knows your work.
- 1:52:50Build bridges, not just business cards.
- 1:52:54One last strike to cement your take away before the flame dies
- 1:52:58out. It goes back all the way over
- 1:53:00there. Oh, hello.
- 1:53:05Hey. Your network isn't just who you
- 1:53:09know, it's who knows your work. Think about that.
- 1:53:15It's not only who you make friends with, who you network
- 1:53:17with, who you talk to, who you communicate with.
- 1:53:20But do they know you? Because it has to be a two way
- 1:53:23relationship. It can be just one way.
- 1:53:25Yeah. OK.
- 1:53:27That's just basically opposite, yeah, because everybody knows
- 1:53:33your work, but they don't know you though personally.
- 1:53:37OK, you look at that, well, you're at work and people don't
- 1:53:40know your work because you keep your head down.
- 1:53:41You don't interact with people and everything.
- 1:53:44So you want to try to do that anyway.
- 1:53:47Build bridges, not just business cards, Meaning, you know, yeah,
- 1:53:51get your business card, but call people, make friends, interact,
- 1:53:53link up, all that good stuff. OK, yeah.
- 1:53:58The biggest flex in the day was here.
- 1:54:00E-mail me at this and have a cool e-mail like like mine.
- 1:54:04Hotmail was actually what it was called.
- 1:54:07I know that's what I said. But there, there's so many
- 1:54:11different emails, Yahoo, AOL, there's, there's crazy blank
- 1:54:16space. I don't know about blank space.
- 1:54:18But anyway, you know, thank you for listening to our show today.
- 1:54:22I hope you all learned something about networking at work.
- 1:54:25Yes, apart from everything else we talked about that was not on
- 1:54:29topic. At least we didn't talk about
- 1:54:32nuclear bombs. Speaking about that, I'm
- 1:54:36kidding. Well, China and Russia are
- 1:54:40funding nuclear project in Iran of.
- 1:54:44Course they are. So anyway, you guys, thank you
