- 2:19Speaker 1: Okay.
- 2:20Speaker 3: I met this author through a friend of mine, missus Brandy,
- 2:24Speaker 3: loved the work that you do. Hats off to you, girly,
- 2:28Speaker 3: So I have a chance to interview this author. Look
- 2:34Speaker 3: y'all know I'm a fat girl. So he got books
- 2:37Speaker 3: and barbecue. But we're gonna talk a little bit about
- 2:40Speaker 3: that later. But I would like to bring up author
- 2:43Speaker 3: Alex Richison. He is the author to Live and Die
- 2:47Speaker 3: in the Shy Book three. Come on up, Come on up,
- 2:52Speaker 3: mister Alex. Everyone, how are you on this afternoon?
- 3:00Speaker 1: I'm doing fine. Little tired. Yeah, my head in a
- 3:04Speaker 1: ring of different streams, avenues of making money. So I'm
- 3:09Speaker 1: a little tired, but I'm excited to be here.
- 3:12Speaker 3: That's what's up. And I understand, I totally understand. I
- 3:16Speaker 3: went from work at the library to an outreach to
- 3:21Speaker 3: mommy mode to now working on my interviews. You got
- 3:26Speaker 3: to pay attention and then taking this time out to
- 3:29Speaker 3: talk to you, and I am so excited. So before
- 3:37Speaker 3: we go any further, tell us a little bit about you,
- 3:40Speaker 3: mister Richardson.
- 3:43Speaker 1: My name is Alone Richardson. I was born and raised
- 3:45Speaker 1: in Gary, Indiana. I have a lot of brutes in Chicago,
- 3:52Speaker 1: a lot of family, and that's where of my books
- 3:57Speaker 1: are based in Chicago. I enjoyed writing. I started writing
- 4:04Speaker 1: over two decades ago with my first book, Lines Across,
- 4:07Speaker 1: the true story of Undercover Cop. It used to be
- 4:09Speaker 1: an undercovering narcotos cop during the Crack era, and that
- 4:12Speaker 1: was back when Gary was the murder capital of the
- 4:15Speaker 1: United States in the mid nineties. That was the first
- 4:19Speaker 1: book and I found out I love writing and reading,
- 4:24Speaker 1: which brought me to my second book, which was The Corner,
- 4:29Speaker 1: which was only supposed to be in a trilogy. You know,
- 4:31Speaker 1: I was saying urban fiction boom in the early two thousands,
- 4:34Speaker 1: mid two thousands, and so I said, okay, I saw
- 4:36Speaker 1: a few books that was a trilogy, so I was
- 4:39Speaker 1: gonna write a trilogy. So after the first one, I
- 4:42Speaker 1: wrote Lies Less Consequences in erotic novella. So I enjoyed
- 4:47Speaker 1: writing now and it showed the different side and I
- 4:50Speaker 1: found out, you know, I can write different giants. I
- 4:54Speaker 1: have the gifted just thinking of things and writing them,
- 4:57Speaker 1: being able to put it on paper. But then The
- 4:59Speaker 1: Corner head book two and a little story about giving
- 5:07Speaker 1: let every authors know not to give up. If anybody remember,
- 5:11Speaker 1: do you remember Patrise Triple Crown, Yes, I do remember.
- 5:17Speaker 1: I was in Chicago for a book signing that they had,
- 5:23Speaker 1: and I met the owner's cousin or best friend or whatever,
- 5:26Speaker 1: and she was running it and the author didn't show up,
- 5:30Speaker 1: so they were pissed, and then we ended up going
- 5:34Speaker 1: to a bar.
- 5:37Speaker 2: It was.
- 5:39Speaker 1: On the South Side, and I gave him a copy
- 5:41Speaker 1: of The Corner and she loved it, and she invited
- 5:43Speaker 1: me down to Triple Crown and just knew I was
- 5:46Speaker 1: in to be signed, and I told her I eventually
- 5:49Speaker 1: got a letter that was rejected and she was shocked.
- 5:52Speaker 1: So she gave me their cover designer. She gave me
- 5:55Speaker 1: all types of things out of get in. The book published,
- 5:57Speaker 1: and boom, and I published A started writing the Corner
- 6:00Speaker 1: Series and everybody loved it. At first, I had paperbacks.
- 6:08Speaker 1: I was hitting the beauty salons in Chicago, all of
- 6:10Speaker 1: them down. Anybody from Chicago knows Stony Island, Cottage Grove.
- 6:15Speaker 1: I was just up and down seventy ninth and I'm writing,
- 6:17Speaker 1: selling all these books and people actually know you own candle.
- 6:20Speaker 1: I always thought, ain't nobody black gonna read off of
- 6:22Speaker 1: a computer? Dumb me, because that's where everybody was making
- 6:25Speaker 1: the money. And when I finally put them on, I
- 6:28Speaker 1: had The Corner, the Corner two. I was writing The
- 6:31Speaker 1: Corner three. I had Loza Thus Consequences, and I put
- 6:34Speaker 1: them all on at the same time, and people starting
- 6:38Speaker 1: to get to know me, start to get to know me.
- 6:40Speaker 1: They even made a book. They even made a group
- 6:43Speaker 1: called the Corner Series, and it was supposed to stop
- 6:50Speaker 1: in three books, and it ended up twenty six books.
- 6:55Speaker 1: And the thing about it is not to my own horn,
- 7:01Speaker 1: but who could write twenty six books that would keep
- 7:03Speaker 1: everyone captivated, and I wanted to stop, and it was
- 7:09Speaker 1: the fans telling me not to stop. And the story
- 7:13Speaker 1: everyone fans and in that corner group, they said they
- 7:19Speaker 1: felt like family. They knew all the characters that you know,
- 7:22Speaker 1: the characters felt like family. Who was in the one
- 7:25Speaker 1: main crew, Slim's Crew. And that's the book that put
- 7:29Speaker 1: me on. That book got me to autographs. That book
- 7:32Speaker 1: got me the Saint Louis to what they used to
- 7:34Speaker 1: have with the pajama jam, which was really a nice
- 7:37Speaker 1: thing to go to. I met the author Kwan, he
- 7:40Speaker 1: was a featured author. I was a featured author, So
- 7:43Speaker 1: it was really nice time I got to meet people.
- 7:45Speaker 1: And one thing about my books on the covers I
- 7:50Speaker 1: was able to put I put people I knew on
- 7:52Speaker 1: the covers. Friends, guys I grew up with. Yeah, so
- 7:56Speaker 1: the people on my covers, most of the covers, all
- 8:00Speaker 1: the on the corners, those are people that I knew.
- 8:04Speaker 1: And so that was a fun thing to do with
- 8:07Speaker 1: that cover designer able to put them on the covers.
- 8:11Speaker 1: And so the storyline was so great, but I had
- 8:15Speaker 1: to have a book in. Everybody wanted me to continue.
- 8:17Speaker 1: They still even asked me about it. And the one
- 8:19Speaker 1: thing readers don't know is it's hard to get a
- 8:22Speaker 1: book into a movie. And everyone always say, oh, it
- 8:27Speaker 1: should be on Netflix, Oh it should be on this
- 8:30Speaker 1: They people say, oh, it's better than The Wire. Oh
- 8:32Speaker 1: it's it's and they go into and that was the
- 8:35Speaker 1: thing that a lot of people looked at it. They
- 8:37Speaker 1: compared it to the Wire, and if anybody ever read it,
- 8:41Speaker 1: it's a it's really, it's really. Once I started looking
- 8:45Speaker 1: at The Wire, I was like, oh yeah, I'd already
- 8:48Speaker 1: started writing the Corner series and I was like, oh yeah,
- 8:51Speaker 1: the Wire. I said, yeah, I can see it. And
- 8:54Speaker 1: in ways it's better because you get into the characters
- 8:58Speaker 1: and they're almost like family. And I end up killing
- 9:01Speaker 1: out someone and oh man, I get I get inbox.
- 9:05Speaker 1: People hit me with messages while you why you get
- 9:09Speaker 1: rid of that? Oh it's and it is. It's nice.
- 9:12Speaker 1: It's nice to get that because that lets you know
- 9:14Speaker 1: as an author that they really love the character. And
- 9:16Speaker 1: I believe as an author you should listen to the
- 9:18Speaker 1: feedback you get from uh, your readers. Now, you can't
- 9:23Speaker 1: do everything a reader want you to do, but listen
- 9:26Speaker 1: listening to their feedback, Uh, will help you write your books.
- 9:30Speaker 1: And like I say, so, the corner ended up the
- 9:33Speaker 1: series ended up being I'm telling if anybody know anybody
- 9:38Speaker 1: who think they would want a serious if this, if
- 9:41Speaker 1: that book was made into a series, no one would
- 9:45Speaker 1: be outside when it came on. It is it is,
- 9:48Speaker 1: It is that good. And sometimes I say to myself,
- 9:55Speaker 1: I'll always be chasing that because it was that good.
- 10:00Speaker 1: And it went and it went from about two thousand
- 10:02Speaker 1: and five or four all the way I'd say about
- 10:07Speaker 1: two thousand and five all the way to about twenty
- 10:10Speaker 1: twenty two. So you had guys riding around playing music
- 10:17Speaker 1: from Biggie all the way to people all the way
- 10:20Speaker 1: to him plan the most recent music. I had a
- 10:25Speaker 1: fan message me and him and his wife volunteered to
- 10:31Speaker 1: semi things about clothes because he said, hey, nobody rocking
- 10:36Speaker 1: Sean John anymore. He said, Hey, so me and my wife,
- 10:38Speaker 1: we're gonna help you out with the clothes. Here, here's
- 10:42Speaker 1: some true religion here, this and that and that and
- 10:44Speaker 1: that and that was a big help. That was that
- 10:46Speaker 1: was a big help. So it's it's uh, I like
- 10:51Speaker 1: so the readers getting involved, it's really what's who I
- 10:56Speaker 1: write for because you don't make uh, you don't make
- 11:00Speaker 1: a Some authors do, but most authors don't make money.
- 11:04Speaker 1: That people think off the book. So if you're in
- 11:07Speaker 1: it just to make money, the readers could tell.
- 11:11Speaker 3: That is as I can tell when you're just send
- 11:13Speaker 3: into making money, when you're not taking time with your books.
- 11:19Speaker 3: You bring the characters that we saw got his head
- 11:21Speaker 3: blown off, but then when you bring out book ten,
- 11:25Speaker 3: that character's back. It's like you're not paying attention. So
- 11:28Speaker 3: let me ask you a question. In the Miracle.
- 11:31Speaker 1: Years, how long if you've been a writer, I've been
- 11:38Speaker 1: writing since I started writing the first book, Well, I
- 11:45Speaker 1: might you know. Let me be honest about it. I
- 11:47Speaker 1: was undercovering our cards cop and I took a bribe,
- 11:51Speaker 1: so I ended up in federal prison. And so my
- 11:56Speaker 1: wife sent me a letter of a crazy the reason
- 12:00Speaker 1: why she was divorcing me. And that day, after reading
- 12:04Speaker 1: that letter, I had a yellow legal pad and I
- 12:07Speaker 1: laid down on my bunk and I just started writing out,
- 12:10Speaker 1: started writing, started writing. Then I would bow off commissary
- 12:13Speaker 1: to tape for a typewriter, go over to the law library,
- 12:16Speaker 1: start typing a book. And it was an older white
- 12:18Speaker 1: guy who was in in for I can't remember what
- 12:21Speaker 1: he's in for, but he was a professor. They him
- 12:24Speaker 1: to have a creative writing class, and a guy who
- 12:28Speaker 1: was friends with people in the mob from his hometown.
- 12:33Speaker 1: He said, hey, man, can they read it? And they
- 12:36Speaker 1: read it, and he said, and they read it and
- 12:38Speaker 1: they thought it was so authentic, which it was because
- 12:43Speaker 1: I know both sides of the law. So he said,
- 12:47Speaker 1: I have this guy, the tan guy was in the mob.
- 12:50Speaker 1: He said, I got this guy. We got him to
- 12:53Speaker 1: got them to let him have a created writing class.
- 12:55Speaker 1: Let's let him read it. And that professor told me,
- 12:59Speaker 1: he said, you have the hard part. Now here's the
- 13:01Speaker 1: easy part you gotta work on. And from right there
- 13:04Speaker 1: I can sit down. I can sit down tonight and
- 13:07Speaker 1: start a story and go. So I have penned thirty
- 13:11Speaker 1: eight full length novels in twenty three years.
- 13:17Speaker 3: Wow, thirty eight novels in twenty three years. So I'm
- 13:22Speaker 3: about to ask you a real difficult question. Okay, which
- 13:26Speaker 3: novel was your favorite? And why?
- 13:29Speaker 1: Vanessa Vanessa? Okay, Vanessa Vanessa was a suspense thriller, so
- 13:37Speaker 1: some people didn't read it because it wasn't urban fiction,
- 13:39Speaker 1: and the problem I had was I wrote some books
- 13:41Speaker 1: in between The Corner while I was writing The Corner.
- 13:44Speaker 1: And so when you have a fan base and it's
- 13:46Speaker 1: urban fiction and they're stuck on this series and they're
- 13:49Speaker 1: waiting on the next book. I was putting out like
- 13:51Speaker 1: three books a year, so they're waiting on the book.
- 13:54Speaker 1: When you come with something else and it's not that
- 13:57Speaker 1: same genre, a lot of people don't read it, but
- 14:00Speaker 1: the one did what it was it was. It was
- 14:03Speaker 1: a suspense thriller. It was about a lady who was
- 14:06Speaker 1: killing these men, uh pretty much, she'd sleep with him
- 14:10Speaker 1: and she'd kill him. And it was and it was
- 14:12Speaker 1: and when you read the reason why she killed him,
- 14:16Speaker 1: you start sympathizing with her. In the middle of the
- 14:20Speaker 1: book when you find out why she's making these killing
- 14:22Speaker 1: in Chicago PD, and it's two detectives, Detective Jack Yancy, Uh,
- 14:27Speaker 1: he's the one who's after her, and it's a prosecutor
- 14:32Speaker 1: of a lady prosecutor who's also working the case. But
- 14:39Speaker 1: it was easy for me to write because I lost
- 14:41Speaker 1: my job as a detective taking a bribe. So and
- 14:45Speaker 1: I also had a young daughter, so I wrote him
- 14:48Speaker 1: with him having a young daughter and I just had
- 14:50Speaker 1: where his wife left him, just left. She just didn't
- 14:54Speaker 1: want to be a mother anymore. So he was taking
- 14:55Speaker 1: care of his daughter and being a detective. So it
- 14:58Speaker 1: was so it wrote well real. Well. I put places
- 15:03Speaker 1: in the book, like I lived in Maryland in Annapolis, Maryland,
- 15:08Speaker 1: so the detectives went back to Maryland. So I always
- 15:11Speaker 1: pulled things. I was in the military. I was in
- 15:13Speaker 1: special Ops in the military, so I've been a lot
- 15:15Speaker 1: of places, so I would pull those places into the
- 15:18Speaker 1: book and keep it real because I'd actually been there.
- 15:22Speaker 1: You know, author also has to learn to remember how
- 15:25Speaker 1: you can't have a character from New York talk the
- 15:28Speaker 1: same way as a character from Chicago, thank you, And
- 15:34Speaker 1: a lot of people do that. You know, you can't
- 15:36Speaker 1: have a character from Memphis in California in LA talking
- 15:43Speaker 1: like he's from LA. It's just so, I mean, it
- 15:46Speaker 1: happens like that, especially with urban fiction, with a lot
- 15:48Speaker 1: of people writing urban fiction. But if you really want
- 15:51Speaker 1: it authentic, you'll write it. There's another thing in the
- 15:54Speaker 1: Corner series, Miss Joplin, who was like she was an
- 15:58Speaker 1: older lady and she used to cook for a lot
- 16:00Speaker 1: of the crew. Well, just some of the things I
- 16:03Speaker 1: put in there, or restaurants in Chicago. People it was
- 16:07Speaker 1: so real. People would go to those restaurants. Had a
- 16:12Speaker 1: lady from Buffalo, New York ordered Garrett's popcorn because I
- 16:16Speaker 1: had one of the guys and Slim's crew and a
- 16:21Speaker 1: girl and his girlfriend. They read Navy Peer, uh not
- 16:24Speaker 1: Davy Peer, but they read Garrett's Popcorn, and it was
- 16:27Speaker 1: getting garrett Popcorn. I just mentioned how, you know, how
- 16:29Speaker 1: that was open. He told her how that was Oprah's
- 16:32Speaker 1: Oprah Winfrey's favorite popcorn, and this and that and all
- 16:34Speaker 1: of that, and that lady went online ordered some and
- 16:37Speaker 1: said her and her husband was ordered another batch, that
- 16:40Speaker 1: it was actually that good. And so that so I
- 16:44Speaker 1: would incorporate a lot of things, restaurants and things of
- 16:47Speaker 1: that nature, and people would go to those places and
- 16:49Speaker 1: try it out because the way I described it and
- 16:53Speaker 1: how like sometarize, how it r romantic, how the guy
- 16:56Speaker 1: and the girl was and he may have been from
- 16:58Speaker 1: the hood, a drug dealer, you know, but they were
- 17:01Speaker 1: really nice dudes, good dudes, And so people would like
- 17:05Speaker 1: to try those places just because why I describe things, well.
- 17:08Speaker 3: That is true because I have read authors that are
- 17:10Speaker 3: from here, from my homestate of South Carolina. And then
- 17:14Speaker 3: I did read this author named La Trend and she
- 17:19Speaker 3: is like around the way, like literally around my area,
- 17:24Speaker 3: and to read her book, it was awesome to be like, heck, me,
- 17:29Speaker 3: I remember that club when I was little, sneaking in
- 17:32Speaker 3: there visions. Oh, I remember that club. Oh I remember
- 17:35Speaker 3: that hangout spot.
- 17:37Speaker 1: It made the.
- 17:37Speaker 3: Book more relatable and actually made me like an extra
- 17:42Speaker 3: in the scene of the book because I can see
- 17:44Speaker 3: the things that she was speaking about. So I do
- 17:47Speaker 3: love that author's pay attention and sometimes even show homage
- 17:52Speaker 3: to where they are or where they're from. I really
- 17:55Speaker 3: do love that. That shows that you love your city.
- 17:57Speaker 1: You know.
- 17:59Speaker 3: I like to know what is the craziest thing that
- 18:03Speaker 3: you have ever heard read from one of your readers?
- 18:12Speaker 1: Okay, say that again.
- 18:14Speaker 3: What is the craziest thing you've ever heard or read
- 18:16Speaker 3: from one of your readers in relation to your books
- 18:19Speaker 3: or killing the character or oh I didn't like this character.
- 18:24Speaker 1: I guess one of the things that stick out may
- 18:31Speaker 1: not be exactly what you're asking, but a review someone
- 18:37Speaker 1: left Okay, she gave me a one star review. I
- 18:41Speaker 1: had like seventy some five star reviews. She gave me
- 18:47Speaker 1: a one star review because she didn't like who I
- 18:54Speaker 1: killed off in the book, and she didn't like who
- 18:59Speaker 1: someone was dating. And that's when I learned about the
- 19:05Speaker 1: reviews that I have to you have the author has
- 19:10Speaker 1: to remember that a person really don't know may not
- 19:17Speaker 1: know how to give a review. Uh. I've had readers
- 19:22Speaker 1: say they don't read the books. I mean they read reviews,
- 19:25Speaker 1: especially if they know that author, because sometimes some people
- 19:29Speaker 1: tell what's what happened in the book, especially if it's
- 19:33Speaker 1: a series, and then you know, one lady found out
- 19:37Speaker 1: all with hell now I know, uh, such and such died.
- 19:41Speaker 1: You know, it's so that that that was that was
- 19:45Speaker 1: really it. I've, like I said, I really had nothing
- 19:51Speaker 1: but positive reviews and most of it. And I know
- 19:54Speaker 1: this is about to Live and Die in the Shy.
- 19:56Speaker 1: But what happened was the Corner series was so long
- 20:00Speaker 1: in so many books that that was a time when
- 20:06Speaker 1: a lot of book signers were going on Bookerley's parties.
- 20:10Speaker 1: Whereas that has kind of faded away a little bit,
- 20:13Speaker 1: which I wish it would come back. And so to
- 20:16Speaker 1: Live and Din the Shy, which was after The Family,
- 20:20Speaker 1: which was a trilogy, which was which was really good. Uh,
- 20:25Speaker 1: to live and down a sha. I may have people
- 20:27Speaker 1: that I just totally interact with that I met through
- 20:30Speaker 1: the books. They may mention something like, when I put
- 20:32Speaker 1: up that I was doing this interview, a lady said, uh,
- 20:37Speaker 1: finally installing number three. I've been I've been waiting on it,
- 20:40Speaker 1: you know, and so, uh, it's really And I tried
- 20:47Speaker 1: not to make to Live and Dine in the shy
- 20:51Speaker 1: like the Corner. I'm not gonna say not like the corner,
- 20:54Speaker 1: because it's still urban fiction, is still in the in
- 20:57Speaker 1: the hood, in the streets. But I will say this
- 20:59Speaker 1: about my writing. What I didn't want to do was
- 21:03Speaker 1: make make urban fiction my books like all urban fictions.
- 21:08Speaker 1: I wanted to be good storyline. I wanted it some romance,
- 21:13Speaker 1: and I wanted it to be a good realistic read,
- 21:17Speaker 1: you know. Not he this guy went in the police
- 21:21Speaker 1: station and shot up the police station, and then when
- 21:25Speaker 1: he let got home and smoked it, he ain't making
- 21:29Speaker 1: it home. And you're not running and police stys shooting
- 21:31Speaker 1: up the whole seventy seven precincts in Chicago area Austin
- 21:37Speaker 1: District police stays, you're not doing And that's just an
- 21:39Speaker 1: example I try to keep things realistic. You're not gonna
- 21:43Speaker 1: die in book three and then and here you are
- 21:46Speaker 1: back in book book six, you know, So I try
- 21:50Speaker 1: to keep it realistic. I try to keep it a storyline,
- 21:53Speaker 1: and I also kind of write like a movie and
- 21:58Speaker 1: so that to keep people really into it. I try
- 22:04Speaker 1: to keep it and I try to make the characters interesting,
- 22:07Speaker 1: you know, where people I've had characters when women say,
- 22:11Speaker 1: oh that's my husband, Oh I love him, or you know,
- 22:14Speaker 1: and things like that. So I try to keep it
- 22:18Speaker 1: like that. And I had characters that people really love
- 22:23Speaker 1: into Dinah Shah. They're two twins. They're the daughters of Rico,
- 22:29Speaker 1: who's the head of the drug He sell drugs, and
- 22:35Speaker 1: he has two twin daughters, Okay, Jackie and Jojo. Jackie
- 22:42Speaker 1: is more like him and Jojo is more like her mother, Charlene.
- 22:45Speaker 1: Jackie wants to be a hustler. And what's good about
- 22:51Speaker 1: it the book has everybody. It's a big deal. Rico.
- 22:56Speaker 1: Then Charlene, who's the model wife. She could be a
- 22:59Speaker 1: wife for an everyday still worker. That's how good of
- 23:03Speaker 1: a woman she is. Yeah, she's benefited off of his money,
- 23:06Speaker 1: but she's tired of but Rico he loved the women,
- 23:10Speaker 1: and she's and the lifestyle really doesn't appeal to her,
- 23:15Speaker 1: you know, because she's met one of his workers.
- 23:19Speaker 3: Okay, Roman, that's the plot twist.
- 23:24Speaker 1: And Roman they fall for each other, and so Jackie
- 23:33Speaker 1: kind of sees it. But then something happens where she, oh,
- 23:37Speaker 1: that's not happened. Okay, that's not happening. But Rico has
- 23:42Speaker 1: a friend, Antoine, and Antoine is planning his way out
- 23:45Speaker 1: the game because they're older. They're in there in their
- 23:49Speaker 1: late forties and like, and his wife is thirty five.
- 23:53Speaker 1: Rico's wife is thirty five Charlene, and Roman's like twenty
- 23:57Speaker 1: nine thirty, and they start there, and I don't want
- 24:02Speaker 1: to give too much away, so some I won't say,
- 24:05Speaker 1: but it's it's a thing I try to keep more
- 24:11Speaker 1: than one character with a storyline that people want to
- 24:16Speaker 1: see what's happening. People want to see what's happening with Rico,
- 24:18Speaker 1: but people like the affair that Charlene is having with Roman.
- 24:24Speaker 1: So let me ask you a question.
- 24:26Speaker 3: And this goes to my fun questions that I was
- 24:29Speaker 3: telling you about. So we have Rico King pen Dad
- 24:32Speaker 3: has been loved the ladies if we were to look
- 24:36Speaker 3: at I don't know much about sports, let's not the sports.
- 24:43Speaker 3: If we were to do an actor who would play
- 24:47Speaker 3: the part of Rico in your movie to Live and
- 24:50Speaker 3: Die in the shy.
- 24:53Speaker 1: Hm, you know. I never looked at a uh the
- 25:03Speaker 1: movie of the shy mm hmmm until I was halfway
- 25:09Speaker 1: done with book two of Living Dina shy Okay. And
- 25:13Speaker 1: whoever that guy was, I can't even think of his name,
- 25:19Speaker 1: the older guy.
- 25:21Speaker 3: I'm never see y'all gonna take my card. I've never
- 25:24Speaker 3: seen the shy.
- 25:25Speaker 1: Yeah, see, I hadn't seen it. But but and if
- 25:28Speaker 1: anybody look at the cover, he he kind of looked
- 25:33Speaker 1: looked like him, you know, and so it would be him.
- 25:40Speaker 1: What was crazy? Jumping back to the Corner series, Like
- 25:43Speaker 1: another reader, they made a list. They were on Facebook
- 25:48Speaker 1: and they always chime in a list of what actors
- 25:50Speaker 1: would play each character, you know, and so that was
- 25:55Speaker 1: a cool thing to do here in the Shy U
- 26:02Speaker 1: see a lot of the actors and actresses I don't
- 26:04Speaker 1: really know they know their names. Yeah, he's hard for
- 26:07Speaker 1: me to remember their names.
- 26:08Speaker 3: But you have someone in the audience that is saying,
- 26:12Speaker 3: Mike Vic or Duba doola duba. I tell you truth,
- 26:20Speaker 3: I really don't know. I'm a big you know.
- 26:23Speaker 1: That's amazing that they said Mike Vick because I just
- 26:26Speaker 1: saw a thing and he's older and when I saw him,
- 26:30Speaker 1: uh about a week ago on television. He's older, so
- 26:34Speaker 1: he would play it. He would look like a good, good,
- 26:37Speaker 1: dark skinned uh character. Just his features. He looked like
- 26:42Speaker 1: a guy from the hood who nice looking and got money.
- 26:47Speaker 1: That's just my big features. That was a good one
- 26:50Speaker 1: by that that that person, that was a good one.
- 26:53Speaker 3: I'm looking at this picture and he showed me's cute.
- 26:56Speaker 1: Yeah, just his features. That Mike Vick. He was, Yeah,
- 26:59Speaker 1: he was. He would fit the mom real well.
- 27:03Speaker 3: So wife Jackie say down for woman nine times ten
- 27:10Speaker 3: tied of the cheating.
- 27:12Speaker 1: That's Charlene.
- 27:13Speaker 3: Charlene okay, who if there was a female musician who
- 27:21Speaker 3: would play her? Any musical artists.
- 27:26Speaker 1: Mm hmm scan tone. First, I was gonna say Kelly Rowan,
- 27:37Speaker 1: But Charlene's a little bit more reserved, okay, served uh.
- 27:46Speaker 3: Hm hmm, reserved woman. No, I was gonna say no
- 27:53Speaker 3: Lisa Ray Hurt.
- 27:54Speaker 1: No, she would not no, not even close.
- 28:00Speaker 3: Because now that I know her as seeing her and
- 28:04Speaker 3: following her, don't who would the woman be trees? Oh
- 28:13Speaker 3: my goodness. Okay, so this is gonna take you back
- 28:17Speaker 3: to the eighties. What's the lady that's saying I love
- 28:21Speaker 3: your smile? That's who I see.
- 28:28Speaker 1: I can't. Yeah, if we go back, if you want
- 28:31Speaker 1: to take it back, because when you when you talk
- 28:37Speaker 1: about the eighties, I'm a big eighties. I'm a big
- 28:39Speaker 1: nineties nineties look of of women.
- 28:46Speaker 3: Okay, so we talk about the nineties.
- 28:51Speaker 1: I'll tell you I get a break cramp for names.
- 28:53Speaker 1: But uh, the one who played uh and love and
- 29:00Speaker 1: Basketball Lover Her okay, and and and speaking of that,
- 29:09Speaker 1: one of my favorite movies, and uh my ex wife
- 29:13Speaker 1: and I went and saw that a few times. Love
- 29:16Speaker 1: Jones And that's my book, A Love Thing. It's kind
- 29:21Speaker 1: of similar to Love Jones. So that's why I say
- 29:24Speaker 1: I can write, uh genres. Uh. A Love Thing is
- 29:30Speaker 1: set in Chicago. Three friends, a lady and two guys
- 29:36Speaker 1: in their late twenties and they they have been friends
- 29:41Speaker 1: as kids and they and it's it's pretty much it
- 29:47Speaker 1: would put you in the mindset of Love Jones. It's
- 29:49Speaker 1: not the same, but it'll put you in it. Will
- 29:51Speaker 1: put you in the mindset, just because of the way
- 29:54Speaker 1: those friends were in love Jones and I, and because
- 29:57Speaker 1: I loved the movie so much. I had started writing
- 30:00Speaker 1: the book in twenty twelve and then I just published
- 30:03Speaker 1: it two years ago. Just that one's in paperback. It's
- 30:10Speaker 1: an e book, but it's also in paperback. And that's
- 30:13Speaker 1: one of my that that's one of my that's one
- 30:17Speaker 1: of my favorites because the other books are serious, so
- 30:21Speaker 1: I can't just pull one book out of the series.
- 30:24Speaker 1: But I love it's still Vanessa Vanessa. And when you
- 30:28Speaker 1: finished reading Vanessa Vanessa, no one will guess the ending.
- 30:31Speaker 1: And when they finished reading it, they would see why
- 30:33Speaker 1: it was titled Vanessa Vanessa. No one ever guessed the ending.
- 30:36Speaker 1: No one that that that I know. And but I
- 30:41Speaker 1: love a love thing because it was something I worked
- 30:44Speaker 1: on for years. You know, just a little bit here,
- 30:46Speaker 1: a little bit tear in between the books that I wrote.
- 30:50Speaker 3: Well, you have someone that says Alicia keys.
- 30:53Speaker 1: M, Yeah, I can see that, and I'll tell you
- 30:59Speaker 1: and see, I'm bad with the actresses and acting names.
- 31:02Speaker 1: But uh, I like Paula Patton. But uh I looked
- 31:06Speaker 1: at this Christmas movie and I didn't even know who
- 31:08Speaker 1: this chick was, Christy Milan or whatever.
- 31:11Speaker 3: Oh Christine, isn't that Nick Cannon's ex?
- 31:16Speaker 1: Yeah, because when they said, when they said Nick Cannon,
- 31:19Speaker 1: she had a baby by Nick Cannon, And I was like,
- 31:21Speaker 1: what you doing? What was you doing having a baby
- 31:23Speaker 1: Nick Cannon? Wrong with you know? When they got all
- 31:25Speaker 1: them kids? But uh yeah, so uh But I'm actually
- 31:30Speaker 1: a dreamer, a thinker. I see things. I love Christmas,
- 31:34Speaker 1: I love romance, I love uh. I'm the type of
- 31:37Speaker 1: person like even at work, I'll ask people if I
- 31:39Speaker 1: see a couple, especially if I see a mixed couple.
- 31:42Speaker 1: I don't get into who met who, how they met,
- 31:44Speaker 1: whatever and this and that. I mean, not how they
- 31:47Speaker 1: met about. I don't get into the race thing. My
- 31:49Speaker 1: thing is, since I write, is I wonder how they met?
- 31:53Speaker 1: You know what brought two opposite together? You know whether
- 31:57Speaker 1: the woman was black and the guy was white and
- 32:00Speaker 1: vice versa or whatever. I want to know that that way,
- 32:03Speaker 1: that helps with my writing.
- 32:06Speaker 3: Yes, okay, somebody found it. Yes Shawnee, I love your smile.
- 32:12Speaker 1: Did I'm sorry?
- 32:13Speaker 3: I love that song. We are winding down. But my
- 32:19Speaker 3: last thing to you, I would like to ask is
- 32:23Speaker 3: well two things. So the first thing is what would
- 32:26Speaker 3: you like to say to your old readers, new readers
- 32:30Speaker 3: and those that are watching this interview.
- 32:35Speaker 1: Old readers, just bear with me. It's not like before
- 32:40Speaker 1: when I was pumping out the Corner series. That was
- 32:43Speaker 1: easy for me to pump out because the characters I
- 32:46Speaker 1: knew like the back of my hand after writing six
- 32:49Speaker 1: seven books about them, and they were like a family.
- 32:52Speaker 1: It was just it just clicked. I mean I could
- 32:55Speaker 1: sit down and not and I can. I could write
- 32:59Speaker 1: five thousand pages like it was under five thousand words,
- 33:01Speaker 1: like it was nothing. And so new readers, if you
- 33:10Speaker 1: read it, don't be intimidated if you see a series
- 33:13Speaker 1: as long, because if you if you're a reader, once
- 33:15Speaker 1: you started reading it. Because I used to have people
- 33:17Speaker 1: when the book dropped, it would drop all Amazon, like
- 33:20Speaker 1: two in the morning, three in the morning, and I'm
- 33:23Speaker 1: at work and I'll have people message that they're mad
- 33:27Speaker 1: because it's four in the morning. They're done. I had
- 33:29Speaker 1: a lady worked in the office, lived in New Jersey.
- 33:32Speaker 1: She told me that she they was wondering what was
- 33:35Speaker 1: she doing because she kept going to the bathroom taking
- 33:37Speaker 1: breaks reading. So you know, so uh, the book is
- 33:41Speaker 1: that good to where even though it's a long series,
- 33:45Speaker 1: it's it's that good. And some of it might start,
- 33:48Speaker 1: you know, it starts back back in the day because
- 33:52Speaker 1: it lasted that long, but but it's it's that good.
- 33:56Speaker 1: And just everybody know that. I like to write for
- 34:01Speaker 1: the leader. If I think something is stupid, or the
- 34:04Speaker 1: reader is not going to be like what the hell
- 34:06Speaker 1: is this?
- 34:06Speaker 2: You know?
- 34:07Speaker 1: Now, some stuff I will not take out just because
- 34:09Speaker 1: I mean, it's true, it's it's that's what. That's the
- 34:12Speaker 1: way it goes. But I'm not gonna put anything stupid,
- 34:17Speaker 1: crazy or anything in there that didn't really happen. I've seen,
- 34:20Speaker 1: of course, we know some I know some romance, but
- 34:24Speaker 1: I've seen the last side of things. And I grew up,
- 34:29Speaker 1: like I said, Geared was the murder capital, and I
- 34:31Speaker 1: grew up where you didn't lead the house without your gun,
- 34:35Speaker 1: and everybody a lot of people I knew were drug dealers,
- 34:41Speaker 1: you know, so I knew it. Also, I'm not going
- 34:44Speaker 1: to put fake stuff in there. I've even called back
- 34:49Speaker 1: and say, hey, hey, remember when this happened, what what
- 34:51Speaker 1: what did you do? This? And this and that and
- 34:53Speaker 1: and they know I'm writing books and fiction books and
- 34:55Speaker 1: you know, so they'll make sure I got stuff straight.
- 34:58Speaker 1: So now that is what's up.
- 35:02Speaker 3: So so we can be one of those readers on
- 35:05Speaker 3: one of those followers that is up to date on
- 35:08Speaker 3: everything you do. How about you give us the rundown,
- 35:11Speaker 3: and the rundown is how we can follow you on
- 35:13Speaker 3: social media where we can purchase your books, just every
- 35:17Speaker 3: way to follow you as an author.
- 35:20Speaker 1: Uh, Facebook page, Alex Richardson, Alex Richardson books. Uh, I'm
- 35:24Speaker 1: Alex Arthur, Alex Richardson on Instagram. Of course all my
- 35:32Speaker 1: books are on Amazon, and I have to do better
- 35:35Speaker 1: as an author. If people want to we get it.
- 35:39Speaker 1: Get this book thing going back to where it was,
- 35:42Speaker 1: you know, about a decade ago. You know, I'll hang
- 35:45Speaker 1: in there. Book clubs. I loved go in to book
- 35:48Speaker 1: clubs and book clubs if I can make it, if
- 35:51Speaker 1: it's not too far or I did a zoom call
- 35:54Speaker 1: last year with a book club where all these were
- 35:56Speaker 1: in the military, and so it was a zoom call
- 35:59Speaker 1: and they were different different states. So I'll do zoom calls.
- 36:03Speaker 1: I like interacting. I like questions. Uh even now I
- 36:07Speaker 1: could I could keep talking. Now that's how much. That's
- 36:10Speaker 1: how much I enjoyed. And I enjoyed. I enjoy the fans.
- 36:14Speaker 1: Don't wait for nobody.
- 36:15Speaker 3: To do that. You go ahead and do that. You
- 36:18Speaker 3: put out that you're gonna be featuring this book, put
- 36:21Speaker 3: that Zoom link, and you have those people come to you.
- 36:24Speaker 1: You go ahead and lead the charge. You're right, I
- 36:26Speaker 1: actually did that before. I did that before, and this
- 36:29Speaker 1: was even before zoom. I don't know if we I
- 36:32Speaker 1: don't know what I was on. Oh I was just
- 36:34Speaker 1: on Facebook Live and people were asking questions that I mean,
- 36:38Speaker 1: it was like, it was nice. It was nice. There
- 36:42Speaker 1: you go. So you lead the charge.
- 36:44Speaker 3: I'll be looking out for you.
- 36:46Speaker 1: I'm gonna look out for you. See it.
- 36:48Speaker 3: I'm gonna stop like I don't read the book, but
- 36:50Speaker 3: tell me smoke. But I thank you for being with
- 36:55Speaker 3: me tonight. And you guys, just look at the bottom
- 36:57Speaker 3: and your screen. You see all this isn't for me.

- 37:32Speaker 3: Well, okay, So I'm gonna take you up on that offer.

- 37:40Speaker 3: I'm gonna read the book and we're gonna come back
- 37:42Speaker 3: and we're gonna chit check.
- 37:44Speaker 1: Okay, yep. And there's a suggestion since the other ones
- 37:49Speaker 1: are series either Vanessa Vanessa or a love Thing. But
- 37:57Speaker 1: Vanessa Vanessa made great uh conversations. Okay, great conversation with
- 38:03Speaker 1: book clubs with the Vanessa Vanessa.
- 38:06Speaker 3: So we're gonna hook up. We're gonna make a date
- 38:09Speaker 3: and we're gonna do that.
- 38:10Speaker 1: How about that. We can do that? All right? I'm

- 38:59Speaker 1: Thank you.
- 39:02Speaker 3: What do you even into?
