- 0:02Welcome to Impact Ready, a show dedicated to helping you elevate
- 0:06your impact in the world. I'm Steph Safra, your host.
- 0:09Let's explore the power of showing up with intention and
- 0:12energy each day. This is for those who seek to
- 0:15make life truly meaningful. Get ready for impact.
- 0:22Hello, team. Welcome to the start of a new
- 0:25week. I'm so glad you're here.
- 0:27Before I get into the episode for today, I wanted to share
- 0:31something with you. I'm starting a new project.
- 0:35It's called Proof of Light, and what it is, is a collection of
- 0:40real stories from people about moments when someone else made a
- 0:44difference in their life. Maybe it was a small or big act
- 0:48of kindness. Could have been someone showing
- 0:50up at the right time, something that reminded you of the good in
- 0:55people. When you start looking for
- 0:57light, you begin to see more of it, and you also start to
- 1:00realize how even the smallest actions can create massive
- 1:03ripple effects. So if you have a story like
- 1:06that, an act of random or purposeful kindness, or somebody
- 1:11just showing up big for you, send me your proof of light.
- 1:15You can send me your story through my website.
- 1:18You can use the link on my Instagram page.
- 1:20It's in my bio or you can e-mail me directly at
- 1:23steph@stephsafer.com. And I'll be sharing these
- 1:28stories here on the podcast and my social channels so that we
- 1:31can start shifting what we notice and remembering how much
- 1:35impact a single moment can have. So that is the proof of Light
- 1:40Project. Start looking for it.
- 1:41I'm really excited about it. Today's episode is about
- 1:45starting. It's about starting the project
- 1:48or the dream or the thing that you've been thinking about for
- 1:52years. Basically, this is a message of
- 1:55just do it, but with a deeper explanation and exploration of
- 2:00why. And truthfully, this is not a
- 2:02new conversation on this podcast, but we have to hear
- 2:05things a couple of different ways to be able to synthesize
- 2:09them. And you never really know what's
- 2:10going to sink in. Common sense is not always
- 2:13common practice, unfortunately for all of us.
- 2:16And there are a lot of coaches and mentors that I listen to on
- 2:19the regular, and they often say a lot of the same things.
- 2:22But man, some days I'll be driving down the highway
- 2:25listening to somebody tell the same story or talk about the
- 2:28same idea for maybe the 10th or the 50th time, and it will just
- 2:33hit me differently. Something will sink in and it
- 2:36will be one of those brilliant aha moments.
- 2:38So today we talk about starting imperfectly so that you can make
- 2:43progress towards that future dream that you have.
- 2:46Starting imperfectly and not waiting.
- 2:49I think any founder or entrepreneur would tell you if
- 2:52you asked them that their company started one way and now
- 2:55is completely different. Sometimes people start with one
- 2:58product and end up focusing and creating a whole business around
- 3:02something entirely different. It's sort of that idea of humble
- 3:06beginnings. Your end outcome looks wildly
- 3:10different than how you started, and that's really common.
- 3:13It's a very common story, something that we can accept in
- 3:16life as being part of the normal routine.
- 3:18It's part of playing the game. If you were writing a book, what
- 3:23you publish is probably a lot different than your first draft.
- 3:26Your initial podcast is a lot different than your 500th
- 3:30episode of your podcast. You're a lot different as a
- 3:33teacher of 10 years than what you were like as a teacher
- 3:37teaching your first eighth grade social studies class.
- 3:41You get the picture. And it seems really obvious.
- 3:43But yet we don't take our own logic into account when our
- 3:46saboteur voices are telling us to hold back on taking action on
- 3:50our dreams. I think we all do it.
- 3:53Some people are better than others at tuning out those
- 3:55voices and really holding the perspective that progress beats
- 3:59perfection and that just starting something is better
- 4:02than waiting. If you've ever read Elizabeth
- 4:04Gilbert's book Big Magic, she writes about this very thing and
- 4:08she elaborates and says that ideas are fleeting and that if
- 4:11you don't act on one, it will leave you and go to someone
- 4:14else, and that someone else is going to bring it to life.
- 4:17It's a really interesting book and I'm going to be honest with
- 4:20you. There's a part of me that does
- 4:24this still to this day. There's a part of me that's
- 4:27hesitated to put out or publish anything having to do with
- 4:32Impact Ready, my coaching material.
- 4:36I've created a framework around being Impact Ready that teaches
- 4:39people how to take ownership in their life and upgrade their
- 4:42systems and amplify their impact.
- 4:44I almost didn't put that out. I created this podcast with the
- 4:47title Impact Ready where we talk all about those same things and
- 4:51the different facets of what impact means.
- 4:53I've made it a big part of my brand and it's because I truly
- 4:57believe in this message. I think that it's so important
- 5:02for us to become more self aware and be able to self regulate
- 5:07with greater skill so that we can have better impact for
- 5:10ourselves and for the people around us.
- 5:12You've heard me talk about it. I'm insanely passionate about
- 5:15it. I think about it all the time.
- 5:17It's what I talk to other people about.
- 5:19It's what I read books on and listen to podcasts about.
- 5:22There's really not a day that goes by right now that I'm not
- 5:24thinking about the idea of impact or how I might
- 5:27communicate it to people. But here's the thing.
- 5:30Like I said, I hesitate sometimes.
- 5:34And the reason I hesitate is because I know that it's not
- 5:38great yet. I hope that it's good.
- 5:42I put a lot of work into this and I really hope that what I
- 5:44put into the world is helpful to people.
- 5:47And it's good. But I know it's not great yet.
- 5:52And I say that very humbly. I don't say that to be self
- 5:55deprecating, but I know it's not great yet and I know it's not
- 6:01going to be the end result. What do I mean by that?
- 6:05I mean that I know there's more that I want to do.
- 6:08There's more to the message that I have to put out into the world
- 6:11then what is here now. These are my humble beginnings.
- 6:16I can appreciate that. I can honor it.
- 6:19I can admit to it. I can admit that I don't fully
- 6:23see the whole picture of it all yet.
- 6:26I see bits of it and I get little hits of inspiration, but
- 6:30it's still very cloudy or it's fleeting.
- 6:32The end result is, for example, I know that healing is going to
- 6:38be a part of my message at some point in time, somewhere down
- 6:41the line, maybe years down the road, I'm going to be talking
- 6:44about healing to some degree. I know that.
- 6:46Don't ask me how I know I don't really understand it myself, but
- 6:50it just keeps coming up in my mind and my heart and I think
- 6:53it's a really important message. I spent the 1st 16 years of my
- 6:57career treating patients with Chinese medicine and focusing on
- 7:00healing in that respect. But I also have continued to do
- 7:04my own learning when it comes to healing with other modalities.
- 7:07I do a lot of reading and learning about energy, and
- 7:10there's definitely a big spirituality aspect to it.
- 7:13I just don't know how it's all going to come together.
- 7:18I do know that it has a big connection to our ability to
- 7:22impact. I understand that somebody who
- 7:25is more spiritually, mentally, emotionally whole and healed
- 7:29will ultimately have a more profound impact in the world.
- 7:33I get that. But I don't know what this will
- 7:36turn into. And because of that, because I
- 7:40recognize that this is just the beginning and it's not going to
- 7:44be where I end up, there's a part of me that wants to say no,
- 7:47no, no, no. Don't commit to 1 brand right
- 7:49now. Don't commit to 1 message.
- 7:51Maybe you should wait. Maybe you shouldn't be putting
- 7:53all this stuff out there. Maybe you shouldn't be talking
- 7:56on the Internet. Maybe you shouldn't be speaking
- 7:57on stages. Maybe you shouldn't be putting
- 8:00together frameworks that say XYZ.
- 8:03Maybe you should take more time to let things settle out so you
- 8:06have a better idea of what the end product is going to be.
- 8:09And then my saboteurs are saying, who do you think you are
- 8:12to be saying these things? That's not original, That's not
- 8:16new. People already know this.
- 8:17This isn't helpful. Those are saboteur voices, and
- 8:21in the past I would have listened to those voices and
- 8:27that other voice of the perfectionist saying don't put
- 8:30it out yet. It's not ready.
- 8:31I know that voice so damn well. That is in fact the voice that
- 8:37kept me from starting my podcast three years before I actually
- 8:41started it. It's the voice that kept me from
- 8:45getting on stages before I did. It's the voice that kept me from
- 8:49coming out to my friends and my family until I was 30 years old.
- 8:53And it's the same voice that quietly says to me, maybe you're
- 8:56not cut out for this. And I know that I'm not alone
- 9:00because I talked to so many people who have these types of
- 9:03voices. And maybe they're not saying the
- 9:06exact same thing, but they're of the same vein.
- 9:09It's pretty universal. And that's why it's so important
- 9:14to start the thing, whatever The thing is, and get it out into
- 9:19the world as soon as possible. Because when you don't, when you
- 9:23sit on it and you wait for it to be perfect and look for what the
- 9:27end product might be 10 years down the road, and you just
- 9:30never start. You withhold all that good
- 9:33information that you might have inside of you from the world.
- 9:37Also, if you never start, you never get the honor or the
- 9:41privilege of having that thing evolve into what you really
- 9:45dreamed it could be. If you don't start, you never
- 9:47get to that end product 10 years down the line.
- 9:50If you don't begin with an imperfect version of something,
- 9:53it means you'll never see that perfect, more complete version
- 9:58of what you were hoping for. I heard somebody talking about
- 10:02this idea recently and they were saying that they view the
- 10:07inaction, the waiting, the holding off until things are
- 10:11perfect as selfishness. They say it's selfish to not
- 10:15write the book or create the content or build the curriculum
- 10:19or share the idea or say what you feel because you're
- 10:22withholding your gifts and something that could be helpful
- 10:25to other people. And I kind of agree with that.
- 10:30If I think about it, I, I never really use the word selfish
- 10:34because I don't think about it as being done with malice or
- 10:39self-interest at heart. But I guess in a way it's pretty
- 10:42motivating and moving when you add that level of responsibility
- 10:46to it. I know that if I think about my
- 10:49tendency to hold back out of fear or because of my own
- 10:53insecurities, and I see that as a selfish act, it does make me
- 10:58more prone to move. So that is one way to consider
- 11:01it. Though the intent of this
- 11:03conversation is not to guilt trip anybody, it is kind of a
- 11:06powerful lens to to look at it through.
- 11:09Now remember, I'm not talking about waiting to do your due
- 11:14diligence or your research or get prepared for something.
- 11:17You know, I love preparation and I think that goes a long way.
- 11:21I think a couple of hours of preparation and planning can go
- 11:24a long way. And I think an extra little 5%
- 11:28at the end just going over your project or looking things over
- 11:32with your team or summarizing something with your partner.
- 11:37If you're going through a hard conversation, I think that
- 11:40little extra bit at the beginning and the end is so
- 11:43important and it's so helpful. That's not what I'm talking
- 11:46about. I'm talking about the big time
- 11:48waiting, the big time in action, the big time putting off the the
- 11:53thing that you think about or you're passionate about or you
- 11:56dream about. I know you all get the
- 11:58distinction. The last thing I'll say about
- 12:01this is that we can all understand that one of the main
- 12:04reasons we hold back is because of fear.
- 12:07It's often the fear of what other people might think of us.
- 12:11And the reminder that I give myself all the time is that
- 12:14people aren't thinking about me that much.
- 12:18People are not thinking about other people as much as we think
- 12:22they are. People are thinking about
- 12:25themselves, just like you and I are thinking about ourselves and
- 12:29worried about the perceptions of others.
- 12:31That's how other people feel. So that's something that I try
- 12:36very hard to let go of. One day I'm going to be gone and
- 12:39people aren't going to remember my name or what I did and so why
- 12:43should I care what other people think right now?
- 12:46It's all going to be a wash years down the road.
- 12:50So with all that said and a lot of these ideas about getting
- 12:54started and just moving, my challenge to you this week is
- 12:57very simple. It is to think about what you
- 12:59are holding back on and just that simple question, where am I
- 13:03holding back is enough to get your wheels turning and most
- 13:06likely you'll know the answer within a few seconds.
- 13:08It's simple, but it's really damn powerful.
- 13:12So that's all for this episode today.
- 13:15Don't forget about Proof of Light, this new project that I'm
- 13:18starting. I'd love to hear your stories of
- 13:20impact and understand the ripple effects that they've had in your
- 13:24life or in someone else's life. Maybe you've been a witness to
- 13:26that. Send them to me.
- 13:28You can reach me by e-mail on my website or on my Instagram.
- 13:33And I think you would advance for sharing those stories
- 13:34because just putting them out into the world is going to make
- 13:37a difference. I appreciate you being here and
- 13:40for listening today. And as always, team, thank you
