- 0:00Speaker 1: In late summer of twenty fifteen, police in Sullivan County, Tennessee,
- 0:04Speaker 1: were called out to a rural address outside the town
- 0:07Speaker 1: of Bristol, tucked away in the picturesque hills. At the house,
- 0:11Speaker 1: they encountered the most horrific murder scene ever witnessed in
- 0:15Speaker 1: the county's history. Three members of the same family had
- 0:18Speaker 1: been attacked in what appeared to be a shooting rampage
- 0:22Speaker 1: inside the small home. The alleged gunmen had fled. What
- 0:26Speaker 1: emerged from this scene were two directly conflicting stories what
- 0:31Speaker 1: had happened inside the family home that evening? Who was responsible?
- 0:39Speaker 2: Hi?
- 0:39Speaker 1: Everyone, Welcome to Just Thought Lounge. I'm Kevin, and here
- 0:43Speaker 1: at JTL we deliver serious, well balanced coverage of the
- 0:46Speaker 1: cases that really make you think, if that sounds like
- 0:48Speaker 1: your type of true crime, then you found the right place.
- 0:51Speaker 1: The case we're about to look at is disturbing on
- 0:54Speaker 1: a few levels. It's the type of story that can't
- 0:57Speaker 1: help but leave thoughts lingering well after it is been told.
- 1:01Speaker 1: So let's take a look. The town of Bristol, Tennessee,
- 1:16Speaker 1: in Sullivan County straddles the border with Virginia. The surrounding
- 1:20Speaker 1: landscape is dominated by hills and forest. Tucked in amongst
- 1:25Speaker 1: the trees are scattered homes, many sitting on secluded plots
- 1:29Speaker 1: of land slightly isolated from the road below. On the
- 1:33Speaker 1: evening of the twenty ninth of August twenty fifteen, on
- 1:37Speaker 1: rural Henson Road, local homeowner Johnny Phillips was awoken by
- 1:41Speaker 1: the sound of gunfire. It was five forty five pm,
- 1:45Speaker 1: but Johnny worked nights. He reported later that he stepped
- 1:49Speaker 1: outside onto his front porch, looked around, heard nothing else,
- 1:53Speaker 1: and walked back inside. It wasn't odd to hear gunshots
- 1:57Speaker 1: in the area, it is a popular spot for us hunting.
- 2:01Speaker 1: It was odd, however, to hear such a quick succession
- 2:04Speaker 1: of shots followed by silence. Another local area resident, Daryl Gray,
- 2:11Speaker 1: was on his patio when the shooting began. He recounted
- 2:14Speaker 1: hearing about ten to twelve gunshots, followed by screaming. It
- 2:19Speaker 1: lasted less than a minute. When the shots ended, Daryl
- 2:23Speaker 1: watched as a man came running down the end of
- 2:25Speaker 1: the drive of the neighboring property number six eighteen, where
- 2:29Speaker 1: the end of the drive met Henson Road. The trees
- 2:32Speaker 1: cleared and the scene became visible. The running man was
- 2:36Speaker 1: attempting to get into a vehicle and drive away, but
- 2:39Speaker 1: it seems an assailant was following boar. Shots were fired
- 2:44Speaker 1: and a car sped off down the road. The narrow
- 2:48Speaker 1: rural road soon filled with emergency vehicles.
- 2:52Speaker 3: We were sitting on our patio and we just heard
- 2:55Speaker 3: a bunch of gunshots and ran out to see what
- 2:59Speaker 3: it was. And five minutes later cops start showing up
- 3:03Speaker 3: and they're snoppers looking for the shooter.
- 3:08Speaker 1: A short time later, a medical helicopter landed in the
- 3:11Speaker 1: field near Johnny Phillips's home, transporting one victim of the
- 3:14Speaker 1: shooting to Johnson City Medical Center. Inside, police from the
- 3:19Speaker 1: Sullivan County Sheriff's Department encountered what they later called the
- 3:23Speaker 1: worst crime scene in the county's history. They found two women,
- 3:27Speaker 1: Lena Marie Rose, fifty seven years old and her daughter,
- 3:31Speaker 1: thirty nine year old Tosha Milhorn, dead inside. Tosha's husband,
- 3:36Speaker 1: James Milhorn, had collapsed from his injuries on the porch
- 3:40Speaker 1: and was airlifted to hospital. He would later succumb to
- 3:43Speaker 1: his injuries. Six children were in the home at the
- 3:46Speaker 1: time of the shootings, five of which were siblings. The
- 3:49Speaker 1: sixth was a visiting friend. A seven year old girl
- 3:53Speaker 1: had non life threatening injuries. None of the children had
- 3:57Speaker 1: been targeted by the shooter, nor otherwise Harp. There was
- 4:01Speaker 1: a call place to nine one one that evening from
- 4:04Speaker 1: yet another sibling, nineteen year old Seth Denton. Seth, nursing
- 4:10Speaker 1: a gunshot wound to his left arm, had managed to
- 4:12Speaker 1: drive his vehicle to a neighbor's home, where he had
- 4:15Speaker 1: placed the call to emergency services. The victims were his grandmother, mother,
- 4:20Speaker 1: and stepfather, but these were not the only adults present
- 4:24Speaker 1: at the home at the time of the shooting. Waiting
- 4:27Speaker 1: for officers in emergency personnel upon their arrival at six
- 4:30Speaker 1: eighteen was Seth's grandfather, Curtis Rose. When police arrived, they
- 4:36Speaker 1: found Curtis armed with his forty five semi automatic in hand.
- 4:40Speaker 1: A second gun, also owned by Curtis Rose, lay sitting
- 4:43Speaker 1: on the bed inside the house. Tosha and James had
- 4:51Speaker 1: been married for about four years. They had two children together.
- 4:55Speaker 1: Each also had children from a previous marriage. All five
- 4:58Speaker 1: of these kids, along with the a neighbor's child, had
- 5:01Speaker 1: been at the house on the day of the shooting.
- 5:04Speaker 1: James Milhorn worked as an emergency medical technician and firefighter
- 5:08Speaker 1: with several departments. He loved old cars and did restoration
- 5:13Speaker 1: and other mechanical work as a hobby. The couple was
- 5:16Speaker 1: remembered as happy, full of humor, and loved by family
- 5:20Speaker 1: and friends. How anyone could have developed a motive to
- 5:23Speaker 1: kill them escaped the understanding of those who knew them.
- 5:27Speaker 1: Tosha's parents, Curtis and Marie Rose, had been married for
- 5:31Speaker 1: forty years and owned the home on Henson Road. The
- 5:34Speaker 1: younger couple had moved in on a temporary basis. They
- 5:38Speaker 1: expected to be there for only a couple of months
- 5:40Speaker 1: while work was being completed on their trailer. In the
- 5:45Speaker 1: chaotic aftermath of the massacre, two very different stories emerged
- 5:49Speaker 1: that claimed to detail what had happened at six eighteen
- 5:52Speaker 1: Henson that evening, but only one was heard that night
- 5:56Speaker 1: at the scene of the murders. The second would not
- 5:59Speaker 1: be told for another three years. At the crime scene,
- 6:04Speaker 1: Curtis Rose recounted to the police how he had been
- 6:07Speaker 1: working inside a trailer behind his home that evening when
- 6:10Speaker 1: his grandson Seth appeared in the doorway and told him
- 6:13Speaker 1: to call nine one one. Something terrible has happened at
- 6:17Speaker 1: the house. The grandfather put down his tools. He did
- 6:21Speaker 1: recall hearing noises from the direction of the home, but
- 6:24Speaker 1: nothing to alarm him. Curtis then headed towards the house.
- 6:29Speaker 1: When he entered, he viewed a grisly scene, his daughter,
- 6:33Speaker 1: son in law, and finally his wife. Ensuring the safety
- 6:36Speaker 1: of the children was his first priority. He ushered them
- 6:40Speaker 1: into one room and away from the scene, and closed
- 6:42Speaker 1: the door. Curtis's next move was not for the phone
- 6:46Speaker 1: to call nine one one. Instead, seeing that his wife
- 6:49Speaker 1: Marie had been killed, he went for his gun. Seth
- 6:54Speaker 1: was by this time, according to Curtis's account, out of
- 6:57Speaker 1: the house and running down the drive. Deducing that his
- 7:00Speaker 1: grandson was responsible for the carnage in front of him,
- 7:04Speaker 1: Curtis went after him. He did at that point also
- 7:08Speaker 1: phone emergency services. Jumping into his own van, the older
- 7:12Speaker 1: man caught up with his grandson at the end of
- 7:14Speaker 1: the driveway. He fired one shot at Seth that hit
- 7:17Speaker 1: the window of his vehicle. The bullet then hit Seth
- 7:20Speaker 1: in the arm. The teenager escaped in his car after
- 7:24Speaker 1: being struck with the bullet. When police arrived, Curtis directed
- 7:28Speaker 1: them to Seth, but the teenager had fled.
- 7:32Speaker 3: I don't really know what all happen to set A
- 7:34Speaker 3: white mail worked his way up here.
- 7:38Speaker 4: Apparently he's a family member, but I'm not sure what
- 7:41Speaker 4: relationship he is.
- 7:44Speaker 1: A manhunt began to track down the nineteen year old,
- 7:46Speaker 1: but was called off when law enforcement realized that Seth,
- 7:50Speaker 1: along with other members of his family, was being treated
- 7:53Speaker 1: at the medical center. Seth Denton was arrested and charged
- 7:59Speaker 1: on six kis, three counts of premeditated murder, and another
- 8:03Speaker 1: three charges in connection to others being inside the house
- 8:06Speaker 1: at the time of the shooting. These were two counts
- 8:09Speaker 1: of aggravated assault and one of reckless endangerment. In February
- 8:16Speaker 1: twenty sixteen, he entered a plea of not guilty after
- 8:20Speaker 1: careful consideration of all the factors involved, including Seth's age
- 8:24Speaker 1: at the time of the shooting. The death penalty was
- 8:27Speaker 1: taken off the table as a possible sentence should he
- 8:30Speaker 1: be convicted of the murders. He was held in custody
- 8:34Speaker 1: on a million dollar bond. Curtis Rose was never considered
- 8:39Speaker 1: a suspect in the murders, despite having walked through the
- 8:42Speaker 1: crime scene. Despite the visible blood on his arm, and
- 8:46Speaker 1: in spite of the fact that he openly told police
- 8:49Speaker 1: that he had fired at his grandson with the intent
- 8:52Speaker 1: to kill him. Detectives later issued a statement explaining Curtis
- 8:56Speaker 1: Rose's behavior. The older man was justified in tail making
- 9:00Speaker 1: aim against a fleeing felon in the midst of a crime.
- 9:04Speaker 1: No charges were filed against him. Curtis's version of events
- 9:08Speaker 1: was adopted by law enforcement and formed the basis of
- 9:11Speaker 1: their understanding of the massacre. This was at least in
- 9:15Speaker 1: part because they found that the physical evidence supported the
- 9:18Speaker 1: grandfather's story. Outside the back door of the home, which
- 9:22Speaker 1: led into the laundry area and the kitchen, a rifle
- 9:26Speaker 1: alongside a camouflage jacket had been discarded on the ground.
- 9:30Speaker 1: This same gun was found to have killed all three victims.
- 9:34Speaker 1: Seven shell casings were found at the scene, and they
- 9:37Speaker 1: matched ammunition that Seth Denton had on his person when
- 9:41Speaker 1: emergency services arrived and rushed him to hospital. The rifle,
- 9:46Speaker 1: the murder weapon, was found to have been purchased by
- 9:49Speaker 1: Seth Denton from a military surplus store in the weeks
- 9:53Speaker 1: prior to the attack. Nineteen year old Robert Seth Denton
- 10:00Speaker 1: who is known by his middle name Seth, had been
- 10:02Speaker 1: largely raised by his grandparents, Tosha. Seth's mother had reportedly
- 10:08Speaker 1: struggled with mental health issues, including bipolar disorder, a condition
- 10:12Speaker 1: that may have also afflicted Seth himself. Seth had opted
- 10:18Speaker 1: to join the army briefly before receiving a general discharge.
- 10:22Speaker 1: He moved back into his grandparents' home for a time,
- 10:25Speaker 1: but as a nineteen year old man, he wanted to
- 10:27Speaker 1: be on his own. Seth moved into a local apartment
- 10:30Speaker 1: that he shared with a roommate. Shortly before the murders,
- 10:34Speaker 1: he was fired from his job at a fast food restaurant.
- 10:37Speaker 1: Things were not going well for Seth, but he had
- 10:40Speaker 1: no criminal history. As far as anyone could tell, he
- 10:43Speaker 1: did not have a violent nature. What he did have,
- 10:47Speaker 1: according to family and friends, was a deep seated hatred
- 10:51Speaker 1: for his mother. After speaking with those close to Seth,
- 10:58Speaker 1: authorities believed they had put the pieces together. They believed
- 11:02Speaker 1: it that Seth drove his Redibuick to six eighteen Henson
- 11:05Speaker 1: Road and parked it at the bottom of the steep
- 11:08Speaker 1: dirt driveway at roughly five forty five pm. He got out,
- 11:13Speaker 1: put on a camouflage jacket, retrieved a semi automatic rifle
- 11:17Speaker 1: from the vehicle and walked up the driveway, passed the
- 11:20Speaker 1: above ground pool, and entered the home. He came through
- 11:24Speaker 1: the back door. It is believed he quickly shot all
- 11:27Speaker 1: three victims in just a matter of seconds. Police did
- 11:31Speaker 1: not know in what order he shot each victim. Afterwards,
- 11:35Speaker 1: he went outside, took off the camouflage jacket, laid it
- 11:38Speaker 1: down with the rifle before walking across the property to
- 11:42Speaker 1: locate his grandfather. Tapping on the window of the trailer
- 11:46Speaker 1: where his grandfather worked, he summoned the older man out,
- 11:50Speaker 1: ostensibly to call nine one one. Seth had roughly one
- 11:53Speaker 1: hundred rounds of ammunition with him, far more than he needed.
- 11:58Speaker 1: Why he had that much ammunition also admittedly unknown to
- 12:02Speaker 1: law enforcement. According to detectives, Seth actively avoided including the
- 12:08Speaker 1: children or his grandfather in the attack. They believed his
- 12:11Speaker 1: primary target was his mother. His grandmother and stepfather may
- 12:16Speaker 1: very well have fallen victim to the massacre simply because
- 12:19Speaker 1: they were there witnesses to the intentional murder of his mother.
- 12:26Speaker 1: Jury's selection was underway in a late twenty sixteen at
- 12:30Speaker 1: the Sullivan County courthouse when that Seth threw a surprise
- 12:34Speaker 1: wrench into the proceedings. After several hours, the judge called
- 12:38Speaker 1: a short break as a matter of process. When court
- 12:41Speaker 1: went back into session, Seth had fired his lawyers.
- 12:46Speaker 5: It was complete surprise.
- 12:49Speaker 2: I didn't say it coming, and obviously it's a disappointment
- 12:52Speaker 2: that we couldn't get the trial off the ground, but
- 12:56Speaker 2: we'll start over.
- 12:58Speaker 1: When the trial finally commenced, the defense team laid out
- 13:01Speaker 1: Seth's version of events. They blatantly accused his grandfather of
- 13:05Speaker 1: the murders and claimed that investigators had botched the investigation
- 13:10Speaker 1: in multiple ways, primarily by ignoring evidence that Curtis Rose,
- 13:15Speaker 1: not Seth Denton, was the shooter.
- 13:20Speaker 5: The proof in this case is going to be that
- 13:23Speaker 5: one person.
- 13:24Speaker 2: Admitted to firing a gun on August on Saturday, August
- 13:30Speaker 2: twenty nine, twenty fifteen. The proof will be that person
- 13:34Speaker 2: is not said. The proof will be that one person said,
- 13:41Speaker 2: Seth Denton fired a gun on August twenty nine, twenty fifteen,
- 13:46Speaker 2: the same person that did, in fact admit to firing
- 13:50Speaker 2: a weapon. Curtis Rose fired a weapon on August twenty nine,
- 13:57Speaker 2: twenty fifteen. Curtis Rose said Seth Denton shot his family.
- 14:05Speaker 2: Curtis Rose called nine one one, and within thirty seconds
- 14:09Speaker 2: of the phone call.
- 14:10Speaker 1: Says Seth Denton did it.
- 14:12Speaker 2: Curtis Rose spoke to the detectives and the proof will
- 14:15Speaker 2: show you that Heath. They knew when they spoke with
- 14:19Speaker 2: him that he said, you all there find sit that
- 14:21Speaker 2: and because I am going to kill him, And they
- 14:24Speaker 2: didn't question him about the shooting at all. So Kenny
- 14:29Speaker 2: Sheriff's office immediately came upon the scene, immediately spoke with
- 14:33Speaker 2: Curtis Rose. They quit asking uncomfortable questions.
- 14:38Speaker 1: Seth's roommate Joseph Whitaker took the stand to establish the
- 14:42Speaker 1: motive for the prosecution. He told the jury how Seth
- 14:45Speaker 1: spoke openly about his hatred for his mother. Over the years,
- 14:49Speaker 1: Seth had made multiple threats stating that he would kill her.
- 14:54Speaker 1: Family and friends who knew of these statements, however, viewed
- 14:57Speaker 1: the sentiments as nothing more than teenage anger. They never
- 15:00Speaker 1: expected he would follow through.
- 15:04Speaker 6: He said he wanted to kill her.
- 15:05Speaker 7: Did you say how he wanted to do it.
- 15:07Speaker 6: He said he wanted to go on a rampage. Yes,
- 15:10Speaker 6: I don't know if he ever said that over instant
- 15:11Speaker 6: messaging or anything.
- 15:12Speaker 5: But I definitely remember him.
- 15:13Speaker 2: Saying you no, did you know he said verbally to
- 15:20Speaker 2: you one on one.
- 15:21Speaker 6: Yes, no question about that. No, Yeah, he definitely said that.
- 15:25Speaker 1: Another friend of Seth's, Thomas Miller, said he went to
- 15:28Speaker 1: a military surplus store a few months before the murders
- 15:32Speaker 1: with his friend. Thomas testified that Seth purchased two firearms,
- 15:37Speaker 1: an American built and one grand in a Turkish built Mauser.
- 15:41Speaker 1: He started thanking me for being good friends with him.
- 15:44Speaker 1: I asked what's going on and he nonchalantly explained that
- 15:47Speaker 1: he snapped. He didn't say what that meant. The gun
- 15:53Speaker 1: purchase was later confirmed when the owner of the store
- 15:56Speaker 1: took the stand and verified the serial number on the weapon.
- 16:02Speaker 1: The defense team relied on two central areas of contention. First,
- 16:06Speaker 1: that the investigators at the scene narrowed in on Seth
- 16:09Speaker 1: immediately and then failed to explore or consider any other
- 16:13Speaker 1: versions of the crime. The lead detective did not enter
- 16:17Speaker 1: the house to examine the crime scene. Curtis Rose was
- 16:20Speaker 1: interviewed for his statement, but never questioned as a person
- 16:24Speaker 1: of interest.
- 16:25Speaker 5: After it took the statement from mister Rose outlife the
- 16:29Speaker 5: same and went and did other things. According to the investigation.
- 16:36Speaker 1: The most damning evidence in the prosecution's case was the
- 16:39Speaker 1: testimony of Curtis Rose. Sitting only feet from the grandson
- 16:44Speaker 1: that he had helped raise, who was also the alleged
- 16:46Speaker 1: killer of his wife and daughter. Curtis explained what had
- 16:50Speaker 1: happened on the day of the massacre.
- 16:54Speaker 7: He got an attention. He tacked on the side of
- 16:56Speaker 7: the trail. Law my attention, he said to Colin one.
- 17:05Speaker 8: Where did he go?
- 17:06Speaker 7: He went down our driveway. Uh tore the road and
- 17:11Speaker 7: the kind of walking went running, but he was walking fast.
- 17:16Speaker 7: Uh well, I went, I put the Soliday on everything,
- 17:19Speaker 7: I went back. I went in the house, and then
- 17:22Speaker 7: what happened?
- 17:23Speaker 2: Uh well?
- 17:24Speaker 7: Uh my daughter she was slumped over on the head.
- 17:27Speaker 7: She was on the table, slumped over the table.
- 17:31Speaker 8: You do next?
- 17:32Speaker 2: Uh well?
- 17:34Speaker 7: I go through the house looking for Marie, my wife.
- 17:37Speaker 8: You see her?
- 17:38Speaker 7: I know, I didn't see her other work, And I
- 17:41Speaker 7: finally went back into the went back to the from
- 17:45Speaker 7: my bedroom back into the living room of Saint James.
- 17:48Speaker 7: He was playing on the front porcheek. I don't really
- 17:50Speaker 7: hollered at me or what it was, but he got
- 17:52Speaker 7: my attention. Well, I went into the kitchen and I
- 17:57Speaker 7: found her between the title and the refrigerator.
- 18:02Speaker 2: What was her condition? She was, David. What about your
- 18:06Speaker 2: daughter Tasha?
- 18:09Speaker 8: She was David.
- 18:11Speaker 7: Trust I went to the vagrom to get again. I've
- 18:16Speaker 7: got in the van and then went down to the
- 18:19Speaker 7: bottom of the Broadway. Wow, I was fun killing. Wow
- 18:27Speaker 7: what mawan?
- 18:32Speaker 1: Seth Denton took to the stand to finally tell his
- 18:35Speaker 1: version of events. He testified that on that Saturday evening,
- 18:39Speaker 1: he called his aunt Amanda to verify where his mother
- 18:42Speaker 1: was living. At the time. He wished to visit with
- 18:44Speaker 1: his grandfather, with whom he was always close. They would
- 18:47Speaker 1: occasionally visit the shooting range together. Seth packed two rifles
- 18:51Speaker 1: and plenty of the ammunition in his vehicle for this reason.
- 18:55Speaker 1: His aunt apparently told him that his mother was not
- 18:58Speaker 1: living at six eighteen, hence there was no chance of
- 19:01Speaker 1: an encounter that would inevitably lead to an argument. So
- 19:05Speaker 1: Seth drove out to the property and.
- 19:09Speaker 6: Told me that she had a house or a trailer
- 19:10Speaker 6: somewhere else. I don't remember specifically, but she told me
- 19:14Speaker 6: that she wasn't there. I was on the impression my mother.
- 19:16Speaker 8: Was not there.
- 19:17Speaker 1: After parking at the end of the drive, he brought
- 19:19Speaker 1: his gun to show his grandfather. They held a brief
- 19:22Speaker 1: discussion about the ammunition. At some point during this brief chat,
- 19:27Speaker 1: Seth testified that he handed the weapon to his grandfather.
- 19:31Speaker 5: Did you rival your grandfather?
- 19:34Speaker 6: It was some point during the course of the conversation.
- 19:36Speaker 6: I really I'm not home, sins.
- 19:38Speaker 8: And then whatever.
- 19:40Speaker 6: I followed him into the house, expecting that we're going
- 19:43Speaker 6: to see he has any turnout amnition, you know that
- 19:47Speaker 6: sort of thing.
- 19:48Speaker 1: Seth outlined what he saw when he went into the house,
- 19:51Speaker 1: apparently behind his grandfather, who was firing the weapon. The
- 19:56Speaker 1: defense provided no logical explanation for what would have motivated
- 20:00Speaker 1: Curtis not Seth to commit the murders. Seth testified that
- 20:05Speaker 1: his grandfather just snapped, so he ran from the house,
- 20:10Speaker 1: believing that his life was also at risk. On this point,
- 20:14Speaker 1: no one disagreed.
- 20:16Speaker 6: I stepped in the house and and then I heard
- 20:18Speaker 6: the gun shot golf and and where I was standing,
- 20:23Speaker 6: you have to take a step for a couple of
- 20:25Speaker 6: steps before you can see into the kidsen from the
- 20:27Speaker 6: laundry room, because there's a little bit of a wall here,
- 20:30Speaker 6: and he was standing here and I was behind him.
- 20:32Speaker 6: I can I could see my mother sitting at the
- 20:34Speaker 6: table in like I was. It was sort of had
- 20:38Speaker 6: an angle from the wall. Heare, So I saw my
- 20:40Speaker 6: mother sitting at the table. I shot fired, and and
- 20:43Speaker 6: I turned around and ran because I thought he was
- 20:47Speaker 6: going to kill me. That's that's what I was. That's
- 20:49Speaker 6: what we want throughout aunt of time.
- 20:50Speaker 2: Why did you think that?
- 20:52Speaker 6: Well, because I just saw him shooting my mother, so.
- 20:57Speaker 5: That that's just what I was.
- 21:01Speaker 6: Yes, okay.
- 21:02Speaker 8: And then walks through the back door and you're walking
- 21:06Speaker 8: behind him and you don't even make it at a
- 21:13Speaker 8: lond room, No, and Bayang shot.
- 21:19Speaker 6: I heard, I heard the boat closed. First, I turned
- 21:23Speaker 6: around and I ran back to the bottle on the driveway.
- 21:28Speaker 1: The trial lasted eight days and saw the introduction of
- 21:31Speaker 1: nearly two hundred pieces of evidence. The testimony of Curtis
- 21:35Speaker 1: Rose and his grandson directly contradicted one another. One of
- 21:39Speaker 1: them was lying. The gun used was purchased and brought
- 21:43Speaker 1: to the property by Seth. The ammunition it's still on
- 21:46Speaker 1: him after fleeing the scene. His shoes were covered in blood,
- 21:50Speaker 1: but so were his grandfathers. The jury needed to decide
- 21:54Speaker 1: without any doubt whether the man that snapped that day
- 21:58Speaker 1: was Seth Denton. Jury deliberations ran over two full days.
- 22:03Speaker 1: Jurors reported being so exhausted after viewing evidence for five
- 22:07Speaker 1: hours on the first day that they requested an overnight break.
- 22:11Speaker 1: When they reached out to the judge again on the
- 22:13Speaker 1: following day, however, they had reached a unanimous verdict on
- 22:16Speaker 1: all six counts.
- 22:20Speaker 4: Robert said guilty or rutard. Emotionally, it was draining to
- 22:28Speaker 4: all of us. A lot of them made statements that
- 22:31Speaker 4: they have to take the next day off just because
- 22:34Speaker 4: of the mental stress that it's been, because it was
- 22:39Speaker 4: very detrimental to somebody's life. After other laves were taken.
- 22:45Speaker 1: Family members gave statements and answered questions during the sentencing phase.
- 22:49Speaker 1: Amanda Tosha's sister and aunt to Seth spoke on behalf
- 22:54Speaker 1: of the remaining family members, while James's sister spoke for
- 22:58Speaker 1: the mill Horns.
- 23:00Speaker 7: Disregard that was given on that day is unforgivable.
- 23:11Speaker 8: However, we choosed forgo.
- 23:15Speaker 1: The jury recommended that Robert Seth Denton be sentenced to
- 23:19Speaker 1: life in prison without the possibility of parole, a minimum
- 23:24Speaker 1: of fifty one years, do you still believe your client, citizen.
- 23:29Speaker 5: I believe that we had a very thorough jury that
- 23:32Speaker 5: went through four days of testimony and de liberated for
- 23:35Speaker 5: three days and examine one hundred and seventy six items
- 23:39Speaker 5: of evidence and did what they were supposed to do
- 23:43Speaker 5: and render a verdict. He's disappointed, you know. He believes
- 23:46Speaker 5: that the defense that he put on demonstrated a different outcome.
- 23:52Speaker 1: Seth is serving otis sentence at the Attorney Center Industrial
- 23:55Speaker 1: Complex in Only Tennessee. The Milhorn and Denton children remain
- 24:02Speaker 1: in the care of family members, including Amanda and Curtis Rose.
- 24:07Speaker 1: Thanks for watching. I'm Kevin. This is just Thatt Lounge
- 24:11Speaker 1: and I'll see in the next one.
