- 0:14Grab your coffee , because we've got a lot to unpack this morning .
- 0:17The market is giving us some mixed signals , and we're here to break down what's really happening .
- 0:22Let's dive in .
- 0:24First up , our market summary .
- 0:26The U.S.
- 0:27economy saw real GDP bounce back , growing at an annual rate of 3.0% in the second quarter of 2025 .
- 0:35That's a significant jump from a 0.5% contraction in Q1 , mainly fueled by a decrease in imports and an increase in consumer spending .
- 0:45But hold your horses , some analysts are calling this rebound an ' economic mirage ' because underlying domestic demand only edged up a modest 1.1% in Q2 .
- 0:57Inflation remains a persistent headache , with the annual rate for the 12 months ending July 2025 at 2.7% .
- 1:05More concerning is core inflation , excluding food and energy , which hit 3.1% in July , its steepest rise in five months .
- 1:15Consumer inflation expectations are also on the rise , surging to 4.9% for the year ahead in August , up from 4.5% in July .
- 1:26The Federal Reserve held its policy rate steady at 4.25% to 4.50% in July .
- 1:33Despite this , the market is largely betting on rate cuts starting in September , with expectations for one to two 25 basis point cuts by yearend .
- 1:42However , the Fed is clearly cautious , especially with ongoing tariffs potentially fueling inflation .
- 1:50Everyone's ears will be perked up for Chair Jerome Powell's speech at the Jackson Hole Symposium later this week .
- 1:57Consumer sentiment dipped in August , falling to 58.6 from 61.7 in July , the first decline in four months .
- 2:06This is mainly due to inflation worries , tougher buying conditions for bigticket items , and fears of higher prices from tariffs .
- 2:15The labor market is also showing some cracks , with a slight uptick in unemployment and softer job growth in July .
- 2:23Looking at the overall market , as of August 20th , the S&P 500 dipped 0.24% to 6395.78 , and the Nasdaq Composite fell 0.67% to 21172.86 .
- 2:41The Dow Jones Industrial Average , however , eked out a fractional gain of 0.04% to 44938.31 .
- 2:52Earlier in August , we saw sharp gains across the board as tariff concerns eased and rate cut hopes grew .
- 2:59The Nasdaq even hit a new closing high of 21,450.02 .
- 3:04But recently , mid to late August , the tech sector has seen a noticeable selloff .
- 3:09This is due to investor caution about high valuations , a potential peak in ' AI euphoria , ' and anticipation of Fed commentary .
- 3:18President Trump's tariff policies continue to add volatility .
- 3:23From a sector perspective , as of July 31st , Information Technology , Financials , Consumer Discretionary , and Communication Services make up a huge 68.1% of the S&P 500 .
- 3:36Earlier in August , the Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund , XLK , Financial Select Sector SPDR Fund , XLF , and Health Care Select Sector SPDR Fund , XLV , were among the top performers .
- 3:52But by August 20th , XLK was down 1.8% , while defensive sectors like Real Estate Select Sector SPDR Fund , XLRE , Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR Fund , XLP , and Utilities Select Sector SPDR Fund , XLU , all advanced .
- 4:12Morningstar had Communications and Healthcare as the most undervalued sectors as of July 31st , while Financials looked broadly overvalued .
- 4:22Now for some company specific news , the tech selloff hit hard on August 20th , with Apple , Amazon , and Tesla all down nearly 2% , and Microsoft , Alphabet , and Broadcom falling about 1% .
- 4:35Nvidia and Meta Platforms also ticked lower .
- 4:38Palantir Technologies , PLTR , had a significant slide , extending its losing streak , and Intel , INTC , dropped 7% due to turnaround uncertainties .
- 4:51In retail , Target , TGT , dropped 6.3% despite an earnings beat , due to soft sales and a CEO change , putting it down nearly 30% yeartodate .
- 5:03On the flip side , Lowe's , LOW , surged 3.3% on strong earnings and an acquisition .
- 5:10Companies like Shopify , SHOP , Palantir , PLTR , Howmet Aerospace , HWM , CrowdStrike , CRWD , and Intuitive Surgical , ISRG , were identified as ' Top US stocks to watch in 2025 ' for growth , with Howmet Aerospace notably up 65.6% yeartodate .
- 5:30Now , let's talk analysis and insights .
- 5:33The market is certainly in a tricky spot .
- 5:36We've got this economic growth rebound that might not be as strong as it looks on the surface , stubborn inflation , and a Federal Reserve that's trying to balance cutting rates with controlling prices .
- 5:47The recent tech correction is a big neon sign flashing ' valuation matters ' .
- 5:53The key themes right now include inflation and interest rate sensitivity .
- 5:57Higher inflation expectations and the Fed's cautiousness mean higher rates might stick around longer , which is tough on growth stocks .
- 6:06Tariffs are also a big deal , creating supply chain uncertainty and pushing up consumer prices .
- 6:13We're seeing a clear sector rotation , with money moving out of fastgrowing tech into more stable , defensive areas .
- 6:20This shows investors are getting pickier , especially about those highflying valuations .
- 6:25While GDP bounced , underlying domestic demand isn't roaring , and geopolitical tensions and trade policies are still significant headwinds .
- 6:35So , what does this all mean for your portfolio ?
- 6:39Our concrete recommendations lean towards diversification , quality , and a balanced approach between growth and value , perhaps with a slight tilt towards stability .
- 6:49First , consider strategic allocation to value and defensive sectors .
- 6:53Given the concerns about tech valuations , increasing your exposure here can offer stability .
- 6:59The Financial Select Sector SPDR Fund , XLF , could be a good option for diversified exposure , especially since it's shown recent momentum .
- 7:10The Health Care Select Sector SPDR Fund , XLV , is another solid pick , identified as undervalued and offering a defensive play with longterm potential .
- 7:21For true stability and income , the Utilities Select Sector SPDR Fund , XLU , and the Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR Fund , XLP , are traditionally defensive and have seen recent advances .
- 7:35Next , let's talk about a selective approach to growth and technology .
- 7:40While the broader tech sector is facing challenges , innovation isn't dead .
- 7:45You need to be highly selective , focusing on companies with strong fundamentals .
- 7:50For broad exposure , the Invesco QQQ Trust , QQQ , is still an option , but be aware of its concentration in Nasdaq100 and its recent sensitivity to valuation worries .
- 8:03Instead of broad tech , consider targeted growth stocks like Alphabet , GOOGL , and Meta Platforms , META .
- 8:11These are part of the undervalued Communication Services sector and have strong market positions .
- 8:16For other highgrowth areas , CrowdStrike , CRWD , in cybersecurity , and Intuitive Surgical , ISRG , in roboticassisted surgery , offer exposure to innovative fields outside the most scrutinized megacap tech .
- 8:32On the flip side , we'd suggest avoiding overhyped or highly volatile tech for now .
- 8:38Companies like Palantir , PLTR , and Intel , INTC , have been very volatile lately .
- 8:45While they might have longterm potential , they carry higher shortterm risk in this environment .
- 8:51Thirdly , don't forget fixed income for stability .
- 8:55With potential Fed rate cuts expected by yearend , bond ETFs could offer both portfolio diversification and capital appreciation .
- 9:04The iShares Core U.S.
- 9:06Aggregate Bond ETF , AGG , or the Vanguard Total Bond Market ETF , BND , are excellent choices for broad exposure to investmentgrade U.S.
- 9:17bonds , helping cushion equity volatility .
- 9:20Finally , exercise caution in economically sensitive cyclicals .
- 9:25Given the projected economic deceleration , sectors highly dependent on robust economic expansion might face headwinds .
- 9:34Morningstar advises caution with Industrials , perhaps represented by the Industrial Select Sector SPDR Fund , XLI , due to expected slowing earnings .
- 9:45So , while a company like Howmet Aerospace , HWM , has surged , broad exposure here without deep due diligence isn't recommended .
- 9:54In summary , the U.S.
- 9:56stock market is navigating a complex period .
- 10:00Investors should prioritize a disciplined approach , focusing on portfolio diversification across sectors , emphasizing value and defensive plays , and being selective within the growth segments , while keeping a close eye on Federal Reserve actions and all that macroeconomic data .
- 10:18That's all for this episode of Spy Trader .
