Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Out of the gates on sport and state. Glad you're
- 0:02Speaker 1: with us. We're presented by Hard Rock Bet alongside Chad Withrow.
- 0:05Speaker 1: I'm Jonathan Hutton.
- 0:05Speaker 2: This is Hutton and Withrow streaming wherever you can bring in.
- 0:10Speaker 1: The process and listen to or watch the product. Chad,
- 0:14Speaker 1: good morning. Hope you're doing well. Good morning, Hutton. Doing well.
- 0:17Speaker 3: Excited to tackle a Tuesday here on the show and
- 0:21Speaker 3: certainly plenty to discuss from this past weekend. Also pivoting
- 0:24Speaker 3: forward to what's going to be happening the rest of
- 0:26Speaker 3: the week. Hey, it's crazy to see old quarterbacks doing
- 0:29Speaker 3: their thing. We'll parlay this into a bigger discussion, but
- 0:35Speaker 3: there is no replacement for experience.
- 0:38Speaker 1: That is what I am learning.
- 0:39Speaker 3: In college football at the quarterback position, in the NFL,
- 0:43Speaker 3: it is also crazy how inept we've become at developing
- 0:47Speaker 3: young talent in both sports at that position. There's just
- 0:52Speaker 3: no replacement available. for a guy that's been around and
- 0:55Speaker 3: done it for years and years. Marcus Mariota is another
- 0:57Speaker 3: good example of how well he played in Washington as
- 1:00Speaker 3: the backup, who's got all that starting experience also. But Hutton,
- 1:03Speaker 3: it's great to be here with you on a Tuesday.
- 1:05Speaker 1: What about experience for kickers and onside kicks?
- 1:08Speaker 3: Can we go that far? Knowing where to kick off from?
- 1:12Speaker 3: This was wild. First off, there are Certainly times where
- 1:19Speaker 3: I feel like in baseball every year I learn a
- 1:22Speaker 3: new either unwritten rule or actually a written rule at
- 1:27Speaker 3: some point that you don't even know exists. When I
- 1:30Speaker 3: saw in the stadium, and I'm not watching on television
- 1:33Speaker 3: to hear what the broadcast is talking about. Maybe you
- 1:35Speaker 3: can say what the TV crew.
- 1:37Speaker 1: Is talking about.
- 1:38Speaker 3: I don't know if they had a rules analyst come
- 1:40Speaker 3: on and say that it was illegal from the start
- 1:43Speaker 3: or not. I know there was a long discussion about it.
- 1:45Speaker 3: And then they came out and said it was fine
- 1:47Speaker 3: in Tennessee football. I know of a free kick, right?
- 1:51Speaker 3: You see a safety and you see the free kick
- 1:53Speaker 3: and oftentimes they'll elect to punt it away. When I
- 1:57Speaker 3: saw Jackson Ross, Tennessee's punter, circling around and I'm like, well,
- 2:02Speaker 3: he's not teeing up the ball. What's he doing? This
- 2:05Speaker 3: isn't a free kick situation. I'm thinking that because 98%
- 2:09Speaker 3: of the time when you see that done, it's after
- 2:11Speaker 3: a safety. And I'm thinking this is after a touchdown.
- 2:14Speaker 3: He's got to tee it up and then kick the
- 2:16Speaker 3: onside kick. But, of course, you can drop kick it
- 2:18Speaker 3: at any time. That's always an option, even on a kickoff.
- 2:22Speaker 3: The issue now becomes, and this is the statement from
- 2:24Speaker 3: the SEC, is if it's not a free kick, which
- 2:27Speaker 3: it was not, it was a kickoff, you have to
- 2:30Speaker 3: drop kick it directly at the 35-yard line. Here's the
- 2:35Speaker 3: statement from the SEC also. He also says that in
- 2:39Speaker 3: this statement that you cannot be moving forward or moving
- 2:42Speaker 3: laterally as you kick it. Now he didn't kick it
- 2:46Speaker 3: from the 35. So technically SEC, absolutely right. It should
- 2:49Speaker 3: have been a five yard penalty and a re-kick for
- 2:51Speaker 3: Tennessee because I've gone back and watched it. He's a
- 2:53Speaker 3: solid yard behind the 35. He's not in front of it.
- 2:57Speaker 3: He didn't illegally kick it too close. He's too far back.
- 3:00Speaker 3: He's at the 36 yard line when he drops.
- 3:01Speaker 1: The ball on the turf.
- 3:03Speaker 3: Um, Tennessee, when Josh Heupel said, I was told about
- 3:07Speaker 3: this on the walk up, and he said, we communicated
- 3:10Speaker 3: with the league office this week, and I know this
- 3:12Speaker 3: has been done in the league.
- 3:14Speaker 1: Everyone's immediately gone back and pulled film of a game
- 3:16Speaker 1: that you and I watched together. 2024, South Carolina, Alabama.
- 3:20Speaker 3: We watched it before walking to Neyland Stadium for a
- 3:23Speaker 3: Tennessee-Florida game. That crazy close game in Tuscaloosa, where South
- 3:27Speaker 3: Carolina pulled off a similar kick with Kai Kroger.
- 3:30Speaker 1: He did it from the 35-yard line. That was the difference.
- 3:33Speaker 3: He wasn't one yard further back. It was right on
- 3:35Speaker 3: the 35. Now, the one part of this that I
- 3:38Speaker 3: think is very similar, they're both moving. I mean, they
- 3:41Speaker 3: take like half a step and drop it off the
- 3:44Speaker 3: ground and kick it. Kroger was moving just as much
- 3:47Speaker 3: as Landon Ross was, or Jackson Ross, but you've.
- 3:50Speaker 1: Got to have it behind the 35. Well, so Sark
- 3:54Speaker 1: was going crazy for a good reason. Yeah.
- 3:58Speaker 3: Well, he was going crazy initially on the timeout because
- 4:00Speaker 3: he saw what they were about to attempt and stopped.
- 4:03Speaker 3: And then Tennessee did the same thing and kicked it
- 4:05Speaker 3: from one yard further back. That would have been one, too,
- 4:08Speaker 3: in the stadium that people would have lost their mind
- 4:10Speaker 3: because there would not have been an explanation for everyone
- 4:13Speaker 3: right there. It went 10 yards because that's what you're
- 4:15Speaker 3: watching at the time. Did the ball go 10 yards?
- 4:18Speaker 3: It easily went 10 yards. It went off a Texas player,
- 4:20Speaker 3: and Tennessee recovered it. But, look, you learn something new
- 4:24Speaker 3: all the time. When you see it happening, you're just
- 4:27Speaker 3: not accustomed to an onside kick not taking place, at
- 4:31Speaker 3: least the ball on the ground sideways.
- 4:33Speaker 1: Easily said.
- 4:34Speaker 2: If Tennessee comes back to win that game and you're
- 4:35Speaker 2: just like, well, you learn something new all the time,
- 4:38Speaker 2: that's a little bit different. A little bit different than
- 4:41Speaker 2: if Texas doesn't win that game.
- 4:43Speaker 3: If Tennessee would have gone on to win that game,
- 4:46Speaker 3: I would have been saying about Texas what I said
- 4:48Speaker 3: about Western Michigan. I mean, if I'm a Texas fan,
- 4:53Speaker 3: I'm appealing to the highest court in the land to
- 4:55Speaker 3: say that never happened and they should have re-kicked and
- 4:58Speaker 3: Tennessee should not have won the game. So for Texas,
- 5:00Speaker 3: I guess all is well that ends well. You had
- 5:03Speaker 3: to sweat out a Hail Mary to end the game, right?
- 5:06Speaker 3: But yeah, no, that.
- 5:08Speaker 1: Would not have been good.
- 5:09Speaker 3: And also, apparently, it's the same crew that was on
- 5:11Speaker 3: the Oklahoma game where they had a touchdown that shouldn't
- 5:15Speaker 3: have counted on a hideout play. So three of those members...
- 5:19Speaker 3: We're also on that one. That one comes courtesy of
- 5:21Speaker 3: Next Round Live, our guys there who had that stat.
- 5:24Speaker 3: There is a trickle-up.
- 5:25Speaker 2: Effect when it comes to officiating right now because right
- 5:28Speaker 2: now across the country, it is tough to find high
- 5:31Speaker 2: school officials.
- 5:32Speaker 3: It is.
- 5:33Speaker 2: They're playing Thursday night games because they don't have enough
- 5:34Speaker 2: of them. And if you want good high school officials, well,
- 5:39Speaker 2: I mean, we all should because that means the trickle-up effect,
- 5:41Speaker 2: you'll find good college officials, good college officials. That leads
- 5:45Speaker 2: to good NFL officials. Eventually, it all affects each level.
- 5:50Speaker 2: And that's where we are. Mediocrity is just the name
- 5:54Speaker 2: of the game right now for officiating. The rulebook's too thick.
- 5:57Speaker 2: That's number one. And number two, there's fewer and fewer officials.
- 6:02Speaker 1: Who actually, and I don't blame them, by the way.
- 6:04Speaker 1: I don't want to do it. Get cussed out week
- 6:07Speaker 1: to week.
- 6:09Speaker 2: To stand there and call a football game where they
- 6:11Speaker 2: can go get drunk or eat a hot dog in stands.
- 6:13Speaker 1: I'd rather do that.
- 6:14Speaker 2: I'd rather do that than have to be an official
- 6:17Speaker 2: on game day dealing with clock operations and rule books,
- 6:20Speaker 2: instant replays, and Jimmy Joe up in section 333 cussing
- 6:26Speaker 2: me out for getting something wrong that he didn't even know.
- 6:29Speaker 1: Yeah, I would not want to do it either.
- 6:31Speaker 3: I don't know how you attract more people to do
- 6:33Speaker 3: it because, especially at the lowest levels, if you're going
- 6:35Speaker 3: to start in, let's say, high school, there's just not
- 6:38Speaker 3: enough money to really entice people. No.
- 6:40Speaker 1: I mean, you truly have to love it.
- 6:42Speaker 3: These SEC officials and NFL officials, they make really good
- 6:45Speaker 3: money doing this, so it is an economic driver for them.
- 6:49Speaker 3: to be able to do these games. Basketball officials, the
- 6:52Speaker 3: same way. They're calling more games. They're making good money
- 6:55Speaker 3: doing it. I mean, I go to my middle school
- 6:59Speaker 3: daughter's volleyball matches, and I see the line judge that's
- 7:02Speaker 3: up top in the ladder up there. And I'm thinking,
- 7:05Speaker 3: every time I'm watching this person, I'm thinking, God bless
- 7:08Speaker 3: you for wanting to do this. But also, here you
- 7:11Speaker 3: are at Donaldson Christian Academy at 3.30 in the afternoon.
- 7:14Speaker 3: getting set to call three straight different middle school games,
- 7:18Speaker 3: a sixth grade game, a seventh grade game, an eighth
- 7:20Speaker 3: grade game. And for how much money? Yeah, it's not
- 7:23Speaker 3: much money at all that you're going to sit there
- 7:24Speaker 3: and do that. And they're doing the best they can. Right.
- 7:27Speaker 3: I respect the grind and they're trying to do a
- 7:30Speaker 3: good job. It's very difficult to find officials, very difficult
- 7:33Speaker 3: to find. Well, my question also would be. I get
- 7:37Speaker 3: it on the field. All the chaos happening, you've got
- 7:40Speaker 3: 100,000 fans going nuts, you've got an onside kick recovery.
- 7:45Speaker 3: If somebody in that moment gets lost and doesn't go
- 7:47Speaker 3: through the fine print in the rulebook to get it
- 7:50Speaker 3: exactly right, that's where I like the NFL system of
- 7:52Speaker 3: the replay assist. That's the expedited. Someone just buzzes down
- 7:56Speaker 3: and says, hey, I know that rule. Terry McCauley, I
- 8:00Speaker 3: saw a tweet immediately that said, That's an illegal kick.
- 8:03Speaker 3: It's got to be on the 35 exactly. It can't
- 8:06Speaker 3: be one yard behind the 35. I wish there was
- 8:09Speaker 3: someone to buzz it in at that point and just
- 8:11Speaker 3: tell them. I don't care about the protocol. Then as
- 8:15Speaker 3: long as somebody knows the rule and a rule was
- 8:17Speaker 3: not executed and they're not even acknowledging the rule on
- 8:20Speaker 3: the field, then buzz it in and tell them and
- 8:22Speaker 3: get it right.
- 8:23Speaker 2: I don't have an issue with that. Well, they may
- 8:25Speaker 2: be doing the best they can. That's not good enough.
- 8:28Speaker 2: It's not good enough. A lot of these people don't
- 8:32Speaker 2: need to be up in the stand at a volleyball
- 8:34Speaker 2: match at 3.30 in the afternoon.
- 8:36Speaker 1: They can be doing the best they can. God bless them.
- 8:39Speaker 2: But the best they can is not up to par
- 8:42Speaker 2: with what is the standard. Especially when it comes to
- 8:44Speaker 2: the SEC or the NFL.
- 8:47Speaker 1: Just period.
- 8:48Speaker 2: Best they can, GTFO with that excuse. That comes down
- 8:53Speaker 2: to the league office or that comes down to the
- 8:55Speaker 2: conference office. to get the best and to pay more
- 8:59Speaker 2: and to ban more and to train more and to
- 9:03Speaker 2: make it more appealing for those that want to actually
- 9:07Speaker 2: go about doing this on a week-to-week basis. That comes
- 9:10Speaker 2: down to how much does your leadership care about the
- 9:16Speaker 2: actual game day operations. Every week there's going to be
- 9:22Speaker 2: something like this. I would just make it, if I'm Sankey,
- 9:25Speaker 2: if I'm whoever... We can't let this happen on our
- 9:28Speaker 2: watch and our games. And luckily for them, it turns
- 9:34Speaker 2: out to be much ado about nothing because, again, Texas
- 9:38Speaker 2: ends up winning the football game.
- 9:40Speaker 3: And all too often, we've seen this in the NFL too,
- 9:45Speaker 3: instead of actual consequences for these officials. One, I mean,
- 9:49Speaker 3: we've already seen them involved in another controversy where they
- 9:51Speaker 3: completely missed a rule that was violated with the hideout
- 9:54Speaker 3: play in that game. they're not going to face real consequences.
- 10:00Speaker 3: There's not going to be a suspension. They're not going
- 10:02Speaker 3: to have to sit the rest of the season and
- 10:03Speaker 3: not ref games because of the initial thing that we
- 10:06Speaker 3: brought up. There's not enough good officials in the pipeline
- 10:09Speaker 3: to go get better experience because, or they have no experience.
- 10:13Speaker 3: Those that they would move up And if they don't
- 10:15Speaker 3: want to do that, they're not going to go raid
- 10:17Speaker 3: another conference for a veteran official to do it. Hutton,
- 10:21Speaker 3: what's going to happen and what we've seen in the
- 10:22Speaker 3: NFL is they're going to punish these officials by giving
- 10:25Speaker 3: them the Dolphins-Titans game, moving them to the worst game
- 10:28Speaker 3: of the week off some of the better ones. These
- 10:30Speaker 3: officials probably are going to be relocated to McNeese-LSU this
- 10:34Speaker 3: week instead of whatever SEC game they were going to call.
- 10:37Speaker 1: That's going to be the punishment. And to me, that's
- 10:39Speaker 1: the one that's not good enough. And if I'm one of.
- 10:42Speaker 3: These schools or if I'm the NFL and I'm one
- 10:43Speaker 3: of these teams– that you're telling me the punishment for
- 10:47Speaker 3: a crew that screwed something up royally is to ref
- 10:50Speaker 3: my game instead of reffing a more high-profile game, that's
- 10:54Speaker 3: not good enough to me either.
- 10:56Speaker 2: And you end up with a crew that wasn't good
- 10:58Speaker 2: enough to be above the crew that just screwed up
- 11:01Speaker 2: the week before. So everybody just rotates up to where
- 11:04Speaker 2: everybody gets a bad crew. They're punished for getting an
- 11:07Speaker 2: LSU-Made state, and everybody else levels up to where they're
- 11:12Speaker 2: officiated at a level they have no business in.
- 11:14Speaker 1: Officiating.
- 11:16Speaker 2: And this ends up repeating itself. It's a bad situation.
- 11:19Speaker 2: And it's a job no one wants. Part of it
- 11:24Speaker 2: is the lack of transparency, quite frankly. The lack of
- 11:29Speaker 2: transparency with this. Everything's hush-hush. You're fine if you bring
- 11:35Speaker 2: up officials. You're going to be suspended if you bring
- 11:37Speaker 2: up officials.
- 11:38Speaker 1: At the podium.
- 11:40Speaker 2: That's the problem, is there is no transparency from the
- 11:43Speaker 2: actual position other than handing out fines for those that
- 11:47Speaker 2: speak poorly of them.
- 11:49Speaker 1: If you praise them, all is well. All is well.
- 11:52Speaker 1: No bonus for you, but praise our officiated.
- 11:54Speaker 2: If you don't do anything but that, you end up
- 11:57Speaker 2: getting a hefty fine and told to shut up.
- 12:01Speaker 3: Well, and Chris Lowe even had the anecdote at the
- 12:04Speaker 3: press conference, post-game press conference.
- 12:06Speaker 1: Sarkeesian said, I think that was an illegal kick.
- 12:09Speaker 3: I think we'll probably get a ruling on that, that
- 12:11Speaker 3: that was not done the right way on that onside kick.
- 12:15Speaker 3: And then he looked at Chris Lowe on the way
- 12:16Speaker 3: out and kind of gave the shush sign to him
- 12:19Speaker 3: because he didn't want to get fined for saying that.
- 12:22Speaker 3: He was trying to be careful about criticizing.
- 12:25Speaker 1: And I'm with you. That is what we've got to
- 12:28Speaker 1: get past.
- 12:29Speaker 3: If somebody butchers a call like that, they butchered the rule,
- 12:32Speaker 3: the execution of it. I don't think anything that Jackson
- 12:36Speaker 3: Ross or Tennessee did was done to gain an unfair
- 12:39Speaker 3: advantage in that kick. They recovered that kick. They just
- 12:43Speaker 3: happened to do it a yard further back, right? The
- 12:45Speaker 3: advantage would be kicking it closer, you know, getting further
- 12:48Speaker 3: up or doing something like that.
- 12:50Speaker 1: But they didn't execute it right, so they got to
- 12:52Speaker 1: get the rule right.
- 12:53Speaker 3: And then if Steve Sarkeesian and his staff or whoever,
- 12:56Speaker 3: one of the 80 analysts they have that's in charge
- 12:59Speaker 3: of rules is telling him that, and they know that
- 13:01Speaker 3: to be a fact and they're seeing it on video–
- 13:03Speaker 3: that it was a yard further back. I got no
- 13:05Speaker 3: problem with Steve Sarkeesian's ability to go up to the
- 13:07Speaker 3: podium and say, yeah, they screwed it up. And I
- 13:10Speaker 3: would be really, really upset here right now if we'd
- 13:12Speaker 3: have lost that football game because they didn't acknowledge the
- 13:14Speaker 3: five-yard penalty and the re-kick.
- 13:16Speaker 1: Tennessee still could.
- 13:17Speaker 3: Have tried the same kick right after that, one yard closer,
- 13:20Speaker 3: five yards further back, but it should have been a penalty.
- 13:23Speaker 3: And Steve Sarkeesian should have the right to express that
- 13:27Speaker 3: when he's asked for honest answers post-game. Instead of sitting
- 13:30Speaker 3: there and shushing to Chris Lowe that he's not going
- 13:33Speaker 3: to say anything to get fined. I think we've got
- 13:35Speaker 3: to get past that culture as well.
- 13:37Speaker 2: Coming up, the bottom five of the NFL. Sutton and

- 14:26Speaker 1: Chad, I think by October 1st, we decree we stop
- 14:28Speaker 1: saying football is back. What do you think? You good
- 14:31Speaker 1: with that? Yep. I'm good with that.
- 14:33Speaker 3: We got one more. Today was our final day to
- 14:35Speaker 3: say it. Football is here. We're mid-football. Football is back
- 14:39Speaker 3: is old.
- 14:41Speaker 1: I'm going to change it right now to we're mid-football. Yeah,
- 14:44Speaker 1: we are mid-football. Changing the notes. We are inside of football.
- 14:50Speaker 3: Football, we are inside you. Football, we are inside of you. Football,
- 14:54Speaker 3: we are inside of football. Best time of the year
- 14:57Speaker 3: for bettors.
- 14:58Speaker 1: There we go. Boom. I've made the note. Football is
- 15:00Speaker 1: back in October.
- 15:01Speaker 2: It's almost as annoying as football is back whenever we
- 15:04Speaker 2: see the Hall of Fame game kick off.
- 15:06Speaker 1: Yeah. There are some promos, too.
- 15:10Speaker 3: By the way, I don't understand television schedules anymore. You know,
- 15:15Speaker 3: like it's really old-timey when you see CBS promos on
- 15:18Speaker 3: NFL Sundays for shows. And I'm like, I feel like
- 15:22Speaker 3: new shows started on Labor Day when I was a
- 15:25Speaker 3: kid for the fall schedule. You know, actual shows you watch.
- 15:28Speaker 3: And I'm like, a new episode of Fire Country in
- 15:31Speaker 3: season four starts October 11th.
- 15:34Speaker 1: And I'm like, October 11th? Randomly. Well, they've only got
- 15:37Speaker 1: seven episodes. They've only got seven episodes of these things. Yeah.
- 15:41Speaker 3: Some of these procedurals, they still, the only old school
- 15:45Speaker 3: relic of television past that exists are the CBS and
- 15:48Speaker 3: NBC procedural shows that will still churn out like 18
- 15:52Speaker 3: to 22 episodes a season of the hour long or
- 15:55Speaker 3: 30 minute long shows.
- 15:56Speaker 1: Everything else is six to eight episodes and that's it.
- 15:59Speaker 1: That's all you're getting. That's all we need.
- 16:02Speaker 2: We need like six to eight games of these following
- 16:04Speaker 2: teams for the bottom five.
- 16:05Speaker 3: By the way, Brooks Carter says football is happening. That's
- 16:08Speaker 3: a good remedy for that. Football inside you is also...
- 16:12Speaker 3: Football we have entered you is also perfect.
- 16:17Speaker 1: Football is happening, yes.
- 16:20Speaker 2: Bottom five is happening right now across the NFL. Plenty
- 16:25Speaker 2: of 0-3 teams. A couple of them in the AFC
- 16:29Speaker 2: South with the Texans and the Titans. Except one of them,
- 16:32Speaker 2: we'll show them to you right here. Except one of
- 16:34Speaker 2: them is... A little bit better than the other. We've
- 16:37Speaker 2: got the Texans at 28 and the Titans at 32.
- 16:39Speaker 2: Those are the right spots for both of them, Chad.
- 16:42Speaker 3: Yeah, looking at this, look, I'm not going to consider
- 16:46Speaker 3: a team with a win. These are the five 0-3
- 16:49Speaker 3: teams that are in the league. We're going by what's
- 16:54Speaker 3: been done on the field. If you've not won a
- 16:56Speaker 3: football game in the National Football League so far this year,
- 17:00Speaker 3: then you are under consideration.
- 17:02Speaker 1: You nailed it, Hutton.
- 17:04Speaker 3: You got the AFC South well represented with the 0-3
- 17:07Speaker 3: team so far. So between the Bucs, the Chargers, Dolphins, Titans, Texans, these.
- 17:15Speaker 1: Are your bottom five. Hutton, you said it yesterday. I agree.
- 17:18Speaker 3: The Tennessee Titans are the worst team in the National
- 17:20Speaker 3: Football League. And I know the Dolphins appear to be
- 17:23Speaker 3: a team that was tanking before the season even started.
- 17:26Speaker 3: I saw that Jeff Halfley was questioning why no reporters
- 17:29Speaker 3: were at.
- 17:29Speaker 1: The press conference. Have you seen that? He had his
- 17:31Speaker 1: weekly press availability.
- 17:33Speaker 3: I mean, you just look like somebody whose dog just
- 17:35Speaker 3: got shot in front of him.
- 17:36Speaker 1: Jeff Halfley walks in. He goes, is this it? Is
- 17:39Speaker 1: this everybody?
- 17:40Speaker 3: And one of the media members says, it's heat media
- 17:42Speaker 3: day for the NBA. And he just looks down like, man,
- 17:46Speaker 3: life comes at you fast. I was the show in
- 17:49Speaker 3: town for a while, and now no one cares.
- 17:50Speaker 1: Now the Miami Heat are back.
- 17:53Speaker 3: Now that the Heat are playing again, I see where
- 17:54Speaker 3: the priorities are in this market. That was tough for
- 17:57Speaker 3: him to see. They're a terrible team also, but not
- 18:01Speaker 3: nearly as bad as the Tennessee Titans. Flash that back
- 18:04Speaker 3: up there, please, guys. Yeah, let's keep that up there.
- 18:05Speaker 3: Our bottom five, so we can look at it for
- 18:08Speaker 3: all to behold. The Chargers are the most surprising team
- 18:11Speaker 3: on this list. I think these three, they are all surprising. Houston,
- 18:16Speaker 3: the betting favorite to win the AFC South at 0-3.
- 18:19Speaker 3: I mean, I didn't think that Baker and Tampa Bay
- 18:22Speaker 3: would fall off a cliff this year. It looks, Hutton,
- 18:24Speaker 3: like last year's end of the season is a precursor
- 18:27Speaker 3: for what was going to happen this year where they
- 18:29Speaker 3: fell off a cliff and lost the lead in their
- 18:31Speaker 3: division after a great start. And I don't know what's
- 18:34Speaker 3: going on with Justin Herbert and the Chargers.
- 18:36Speaker 1: He's in love. Terrible. He's in love. That's what's happened. Love, love, love.
- 18:41Speaker 3: Madison Beers came into his life. The guy now can't
- 18:44Speaker 3: see a safety right in the middle of the field
- 18:46Speaker 3: all of a sudden.
- 18:46Speaker 2: Yeah, he's got Brady. He's got Brady ripping him. Hey,
- 18:50Speaker 2: I'll say this, man. 0-3, it is still possible. So
- 18:54Speaker 2: you're saying they have a chance. The Texans did it
- 18:57Speaker 2: last year.
- 18:59Speaker 1: They did. They made the playoffs. But something about Houston,
- 19:03Speaker 1: they always start slow. Always.
- 19:07Speaker 2: Tampa was the one that was starting fast a year ago.
- 19:09Speaker 2: And the Chargers are supposed to be one of the
- 19:10Speaker 2: better teams in the league. Now, 31-32, the Titans are
- 19:15Speaker 2: the worst team in the NFL, and that's saying something
- 19:17Speaker 2: because you nailed it. The Dolphins are actually trying to tank,
- 19:20Speaker 2: and they can't. They can't tank because of the Tennessee Titans.
- 19:24Speaker 2: That's how bad the Titans are. You've got not only
- 19:31Speaker 2: on the interception, not only is it the worst play
- 19:32Speaker 2: we've seen from Cam Ward so far this season, it's
- 19:34Speaker 2: the worst radio call I've heard all season.
- 19:38Speaker 1: On the play-by-play. for that. Nothing is going right.
- 19:41Speaker 2: Everything is falling right into place for the Tennessee Titans.
- 19:45Speaker 2: If you want to be the worst team in the league, everything,
- 19:47Speaker 2: when I say everything, everything about the organization.
- 19:49Speaker 1: Falls right into place, Chad. I just feel like everything,
- 19:54Speaker 1: just every part of it is inept. Every part of it.
- 19:59Speaker 3: Including that call, which was hilarious that you mentioned. Even
- 20:03Speaker 3: the reporters that cover the team. are dealing with all
- 20:07Speaker 3: these different issues. I mean, our former co-host, I got
- 20:11Speaker 3: to point this out. I don't want to play it
- 20:12Speaker 3: because I don't want to get flagged for playing Paul's
- 20:16Speaker 3: show on here.
- 20:16Speaker 1: But Paul Koharski, I don't know if JT saw this
- 20:19Speaker 1: or not.
- 20:19Speaker 3: Because JT could account for this also of dealings with
- 20:23Speaker 3: Paul in the past. But it was the most classic
- 20:25Speaker 3: Paul interaction with an employee in the press box in
- 20:29Speaker 3: That MetLife Stadium where he's starting a show and he's
- 20:33Speaker 3: told quickly by the person he needs to leave. And
- 20:35Speaker 3: Paul's questioning him on why he needs to leave. And
- 20:38Speaker 3: he's like, oh, so if.
- 20:39Speaker 1: I was a Jersey media member, I wouldn't have to leave.
- 20:41Speaker 1: I said, no, sir. And the guy's being very polite. No, sir.
- 20:44Speaker 1: You just you got 30 minutes. He's like, I'll be
- 20:46Speaker 1: out in 15. I'll be out in 15.
- 20:50Speaker 3: And the guy walks away and he looks into the
- 20:52Speaker 3: camera and says lazy efforts right before he starts the
- 20:55Speaker 3: show back. about the people working in there i mean
- 20:58Speaker 3: everything has fallen apart uh you know pets heads are
- 21:01Speaker 3: falling off everything's going wrong even people who cover the
- 21:04Speaker 3: titans is just a complete train wreck and a disaster
- 21:08Speaker 3: it's not a good time to be a titans fan
- 21:10Speaker 3: and that's why they're 32nd on this list.
- 21:12Speaker 2: Imagine but the thing about being your profession your profession
- 21:16Speaker 2: is covering the nfl and you get the titans who
- 21:19Speaker 2: can't even get out of their own way.
- 21:21Speaker 1: What do you do? Oh, I cover the NFL. Oh, really?
- 21:23Speaker 1: What do you do in the NFL? I cover the
- 21:25Speaker 1: Tennessee Titans. Oh, is it Heat Media Day yet?
- 21:28Speaker 2: I'd really go listen and learn about that.
- 21:30Speaker 3: Hey, it's NHL Opening Day. I just learned about that
- 21:32Speaker 3: for the first time, and Luke's told us that before.
- 21:34Speaker 3: National Predators season is here. I'm sure they're going to
- 21:37Speaker 3: be great.
- 21:37Speaker 1: National Media. National Media has something to do now instead
- 21:40Speaker 1: of cover this godforsaken team.
- 21:42Speaker 3: I'm sure it's going to be awesome. October 1st, tomorrow,
- 21:45Speaker 3: right about the time that we're going to be.
- 21:46Speaker 1: Hey, hockey is back. Hockey is back. Yeah.
- 21:49Speaker 3: Hey, everybody knows hockey betting is the best time of
- 21:51Speaker 3: the year for betters.
- 21:52Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 21:52Speaker 3: That's what we're going to start with tomorrow with hockey
- 21:55Speaker 3: is back. Man, what a bad time to be. And
- 22:00Speaker 3: that's what I keep thinking about the city of Nashville.
- 22:02Speaker 3: And I'm like, how is Vanderbilt and their fans or
- 22:05Speaker 3: at least people not gravitating a little bit more to that?
- 22:08Speaker 3: I mean, even with the loss on Sunday, they're 14
- 22:10Speaker 3: and four. In their last 18 games as an SEC team,
- 22:14Speaker 3: at least there's some success going on with that team.
- 22:17Speaker 3: And I understand there's a thousand other things going on
- 22:20Speaker 3: in Nashville that's not even sports-related, but come on.
- 22:23Speaker 1: Well, those fans, the crossover fans, are fans of a
- 22:27Speaker 1: different college already. That's why.
- 22:30Speaker 2: You don't automatically go across town. You go and watch
- 22:33Speaker 2: your team play wherever you're from. And when it comes
- 22:36Speaker 2: to the Titans, you're just like, yeah, the Titans were
- 22:38Speaker 2: my NFL team. Now I just sit home and watch.
- 22:40Speaker 2: I'll sit and watch the rest of the league. Instead
- 22:43Speaker 2: of watch this putrid product that they're rolling out there
- 22:46Speaker 2: and that we're paying for. Everyone's making money on underneath
- 22:50Speaker 2: that roof in the future stadium. The team's going to
- 22:53Speaker 2: own everything under that roof, regardless of what happens this season.
- 22:57Speaker 2: Regardless of what happens this season, they will bury the
- 22:59Speaker 2: past with this season. It's always been about 2027. And
- 23:03Speaker 2: the question is whether or not they can actually force
- 23:06Speaker 2: their franchise quarterback into that role. And the hint is, no,
- 23:09Speaker 2: you can't. You can't because the last two quarterbacks that
- 23:13Speaker 2: they tried to do this with sucked. Will Levis and
- 23:16Speaker 2: now Cam Ward.
- 23:18Speaker 3: And it's not worse anywhere else. I want to be
- 23:23Speaker 3: clear about this because this is what I see and
- 23:26Speaker 3: hear all too often. And I feel like it's the
- 23:30Speaker 3: affirmation process. People are so afraid of having someone yell
- 23:33Speaker 3: at you online that you want to make people happy.
- 23:37Speaker 1: That follow the team that you cover.
- 23:39Speaker 3: So you want to be like, hey, but look at Tampa.
- 23:42Speaker 3: They're 0-3-2. And they thought they were going to be good.
- 23:45Speaker 1: Ha, ha, ha, ha. Look at Justin Herbert.
- 23:48Speaker 3: And he's in love and he can't complete a pass anymore.
- 23:51Speaker 1: You're the worst.
- 23:52Speaker 3: You have no right to talk about anybody else. There's
- 23:56Speaker 3: no feeling of joy on the team. Robert Sala saying
- 24:00Speaker 3: we're two plays away from 2-1.
- 24:01Speaker 1: Get out of here. Get out of here, Bob. Nobody
- 24:03Speaker 1: wants to hear that. That's a loser mentality, Bob.
- 24:09Speaker 3: I saw Easton Freeze, who covers the Titans yesterday, repost
- 24:14Speaker 3: a video of the Seattle Mariners forcing their manager to
- 24:17Speaker 3: announce his own retirement, which was a bold move by
- 24:20Speaker 3: the Mariners. And the guy's up there crying, saying he
- 24:22Speaker 3: just got informed that he's no longer the manager in
- 24:25Speaker 3: the postseason wrap-up, and they're not even talking about it.
- 24:27Speaker 3: They're making him talk about it. But they're like, oh
- 24:30Speaker 3: my gosh, what organization would do this?
- 24:32Speaker 1: And I'm thinking, yours! This one. The one you cover. Like,
- 24:35Speaker 1: this is not above this organization.
- 24:37Speaker 3: This is not crazy to think that something like this
- 24:40Speaker 3: could happen.
- 24:41Speaker 1: Hey, Vrabel, get up there and talk about Rancarthon.
- 24:44Speaker 3: I mean, I'm at the grocery store yesterday, Hutton, and
- 24:47Speaker 3: I got the guy working at the grocery store kind
- 24:49Speaker 3: of saying, you guys are spot on about the Titans.
- 24:51Speaker 3: He's like, I don't even know what to think. I
- 24:54Speaker 3: don't know what to be optimistic about. And I'm thinking,
- 24:57Speaker 3: I'm with you, brother. We're the same. I mean, I
- 25:00Speaker 3: wish I could tell you something that's going to be
- 25:02Speaker 3: coming in the future that's going to be better, but
- 25:05Speaker 3: all you're going to be sold is a bill of goods.
- 25:08Speaker 1: About, look at this brand new shiny indoor stadium. And
- 25:12Speaker 1: how great this is.
- 25:12Speaker 3: Also, give me thousands of more dollars to go experience
- 25:16Speaker 3: the team in this stadium. That's all you're going to
- 25:19Speaker 3: hear about. It's all of the optimism with this team.
- 25:22Speaker 3: There's nothing else right now. And if that's too harsh
- 25:26Speaker 3: for somebody to process.
- 25:28Speaker 1: Right now, then so be it.
- 25:30Speaker 3: Here's your bottle. Here's your baby bottle. It's not like
- 25:33Speaker 3: you can fall back on, there's good ownership. There's good marketing.
- 25:37Speaker 3: There's good GMs. There's good coaching. I don't know that
- 25:41Speaker 3: the Titans have any of that. I'm certain they don't
- 25:44Speaker 3: have some of it. I don't know about coaching right now.
- 25:47Speaker 3: Still too early for me to say.
- 25:48Speaker 1: They don't have enough of anything. I like Mike Borgonzi.
- 25:52Speaker 1: What has he done? Nothing.
- 25:54Speaker 3: Absolutely nothing to improve this team. I'm looking at the
- 25:57Speaker 3: hard facts on the field, and it's not good enough.
- 26:00Speaker 1: What has Mike Borgonzi done?
- 26:01Speaker 2: He drafted Cam Ward is what he did.
- 26:04Speaker 1: It's not good enough. None of it is good enough.
- 26:07Speaker 3: None of it is good enough, and there's too many
- 26:10Speaker 3: that act like it's good enough and talk a big game,
- 26:13Speaker 3: and then the moment it gets bad, it's like, well,
- 26:14Speaker 3: we've got to stop talking.
- 26:16Speaker 1: We've got to let our play. Okay, yeah, let's do that.
- 26:18Speaker 3: Let's start with that one next time instead of talking
- 26:21Speaker 3: about how great we did in practice against the Seattle Seahawks.
- 26:25Speaker 2: Yeah, and there's too many that talk the game that
- 26:28Speaker 2: are covering this team as well, that cover up the
- 26:32Speaker 2: blemishes to where whenever it starts to float to the top,
- 26:36Speaker 2: you know, Well, where did this come from? Well, it's
- 26:40Speaker 2: been there the entire time. But, you know, some are
- 26:43Speaker 2: carrying the water for the organization. And when I say some, plenty.
- 26:46Speaker 2: Plenty are getting paid on the side at a separate
- 26:49Speaker 2: check to go do something for the Titans now. And
- 26:52Speaker 2: everybody's just helping everybody, playing patty cake. It's time to
- 26:56Speaker 2: GTFO with this team. Dead last, and they're going to
- 26:58Speaker 2: be dead last for a while.
- 27:00Speaker 3: The Titans would have been better off paying Jared Stillman
- 27:04Speaker 3: whatever he makes on his YouTube channel. to not talk
- 27:07Speaker 3: about the Titans ever again on his show than to
- 27:11Speaker 3: bring a more bad PR.
- 27:13Speaker 1: Their way by revoking his credential. Well, this has nothing
- 27:16Speaker 1: to do with Jared anymore.
- 27:17Speaker 3: I know, but it feels that way. And I'm talking
- 27:20Speaker 3: about the pay-for-play, that part of it. It feels like
- 27:24Speaker 3: there's just way too much of that buddy-buddy stuff going on.
- 27:28Speaker 1: I haven't even thought about Jared having his credential revoked
- 27:31Speaker 1: this week. Yeah.
- 27:32Speaker 2: I mean, I'm sitting there listening to All these local
- 27:36Speaker 2: media members who have been carrying the water of this
- 27:40Speaker 2: team now look at the result and be like, oh,
- 27:42Speaker 2: they're 0-3 again.
- 27:43Speaker 1: What happened? We're shell-shocked. This team should be better than that. No,
- 27:47Speaker 1: they shouldn't. They're awful. They are awful.
- 27:51Speaker 2: They don't have leadership up top, and they have leadership
- 27:54Speaker 2: in the locker room. They want to take BTA, but
- 27:57Speaker 2: whenever it comes to actual regular season games, no one's
- 28:00Speaker 2: holding anyone accountable.
- 28:02Speaker 1: No one.
- 28:03Speaker 2: Because that's just what they're used to. That's just how
- 28:06Speaker 2: they is in West Virginia, Chad.
- 28:08Speaker 1: That's just how they is. Pac-Man had it right years ago.
- 28:10Speaker 3: Ben on the YouTube chat says, nobody has it worse,
- 28:13Speaker 3: 6-31 in the last 37. He also says, feels like
- 28:17Speaker 3: Berganzi's going to get a pass. I don't really know
- 28:19Speaker 3: why at this point. And Catfish Jake says, exactly why
- 28:22Speaker 3: the whole time I've been talking about how dumb it is,
- 28:25Speaker 3: the only thing they want to talk about is new
- 28:26Speaker 3: uniforms and the stadium and nothing football related.
- 28:29Speaker 1: And your money. And your money.
- 28:32Speaker 3: And DJ from Nashville says, by the way, the radio
- 28:34Speaker 3: broadcast team is terrible.
- 28:36Speaker 1: It's awful. It's awful. I mean, look, Mike.
- 28:39Speaker 3: Keith's our buddy. You work for Mike Keith, so I'm
- 28:42Speaker 3: certainly biased when it comes.
- 28:43Speaker 1: To Mike Keith. I work for Titans Radio.
- 28:44Speaker 3: I know the care and the professionalism that went into that.
- 28:48Speaker 3: Years and years you could at least fall back on, man,
- 28:52Speaker 3: let's keep Mike Keith in bubble wrap. At least we
- 28:55Speaker 3: have Mike Keith, who is really good at what he
- 28:57Speaker 3: does and gives great sound bites and does that. And then,
- 29:00Speaker 3: of course, Coach Mack. As part of it too, right?
- 29:03Speaker 3: At least you could lean on that as well.
- 29:06Speaker 2: I don't want an interception to sound like Pee Wee's Playhouse.
- 29:10Speaker 1: Yeah. His father of five. Here he is.
- 29:17Speaker 2: Robert Sala, father of eight, taking the field. GTFO with
- 29:21Speaker 2: that stuff, man. Yeah, there's a lot of kids he's got.
- 29:22Speaker 1: Seven? How many kids does Robert Sala have? I believe
- 29:25Speaker 1: it's eight. Could be nine now. Could be nine. Eight kids.
- 29:29Speaker 1: Eight or nine. I don't know.
- 29:32Speaker 2: Listen to Titans Radio pregame. You'll hear all about it
- 29:34Speaker 2: every week, Chad. We're at a low end.
- 29:41Speaker 1: At a low ebb. So wait on that Carnell Tate feature.
- 29:44Speaker 3: Eight kids under the age of 15, by the way,
- 29:47Speaker 3: for Robert Sala.
- 29:50Speaker 1: Adam, Zane, Sammy, Mila, Michael, Ella, Jacob, and Robert Jr.,
- 29:57Speaker 1: Robert Jr.
- 29:58Speaker 3: By the way, it's always odd to me when the
- 30:01Speaker 3: father goes with the junior on one of the younger
- 30:04Speaker 3: or middle.
- 30:05Speaker 1: Kids and doesn't just go to the oldest one.
- 30:07Speaker 3: Like, no, no, no, I'm going to wait to denote
- 30:11Speaker 3: the junior moniker for my name with this other kid.
- 30:14Speaker 3: I'm not sure I love this one enough yet. Are
- 30:15Speaker 3: they going to wait for the eighth kid? Yeah, upon birth. Like,
- 30:18Speaker 3: I don't think this kid is worthy yet. So that's
- 30:20Speaker 3: tough news for Adam and Zane, who are 15 and 13,
- 30:24Speaker 3: who didn't get their father's name, his first two sons,
- 30:26Speaker 3: or Michael. Or Jacob, his fourth son. Because the fifth son,
- 30:31Speaker 3: Robert Jr., got it. He's like, all right, we're done
- 30:33Speaker 3: now at eight, I think. Man, if there's anything, the
- 30:35Speaker 3: Titans have hired a fertile head coach.
- 30:37Speaker 1: We know that. Watch out, America. We've got a starting
- 30:40Speaker 1: lineup coming your way.
- 30:42Speaker 3: I'm watching Lanterns on HBO, which I normally don't like
- 30:44Speaker 3: superhero stuff. But this is so not superhero stuff.
- 30:48Speaker 1: And it's Kyle.
- 30:48Speaker 3: Chandler from Friday Night Lights, who's awesome. But it's really
- 30:51Speaker 3: good about different green lanterns. but there's a kid who
- 30:54Speaker 3: was raised by his parents to be special, and he
- 30:56Speaker 3: got all the attention, and his siblings just call him
- 30:59Speaker 3: Chosen the whole time as a nickname. It's like, okay, Chosen, sure.
- 31:03Speaker 3: That's Robert Jr. in that household, the youngest of the
- 31:06Speaker 3: Sala kids. I bet all the siblings just refer to
- 31:09Speaker 3: him as Chosen.
- 31:10Speaker 2: That's our hope, is that the Titans will have a
- 31:12Speaker 2: starting lineup of nothing but Salas, coached by Robert Sala.
- 31:17Speaker 1: That's it. That's it.
- 31:18Speaker 3: Much like Much like for years, Tennessee football, their one
- 31:21Speaker 3: hope was that all of Travis Henry's children would unite
- 31:25Speaker 3: on the football field and make up an entire starting
- 31:27Speaker 3: defense for the Vols. At some point, they all meet
- 31:30Speaker 3: each other for the first time, many of them together.
- 31:33Speaker 3: That's all Tennessee football had to hope for for a while. Look,
- 31:38Speaker 3: there were some hopeless times for the Tennessee Vols for
- 31:41Speaker 3: years and years, too. But there was always a sense of, well,
- 31:45Speaker 3: you got a great fan base. You got a good stadium.
- 31:47Speaker 3: You can go hire a new coach. And you can
- 31:49Speaker 3: at least get it going in the right direction quickly.
- 31:51Speaker 3: With this ownership group, with these decision makers in place,
- 31:57Speaker 3: I don't know what the answer is for the Titans.
- 32:00Speaker 3: There's no easy, quick fix to this. And if you're
- 32:03Speaker 3: covering this team, that is the most disappointing part of it.
- 32:08Speaker 2: Chad, don't subscribers have to be dropping like flies if
- 32:10Speaker 2: you're covering this team? If your way of living is
- 32:12Speaker 2: covering the Tennessee Titans, what direction do you go right now?
- 32:17Speaker 2: If this is going to be the same process year
- 32:20Speaker 2: in and year out. Same storyline every single year.
- 32:25Speaker 3: My sister attended that Philadelphia Eagles game in 100-degree heat
- 32:30Speaker 3: and had the cops called on her by Eagles fans
- 32:33Speaker 3: because she was so mad at the Eagles fans around
- 32:36Speaker 3: her and was yelling at them and getting on to
- 32:39Speaker 3: them the whole time. She didn't get arrested. The cops
- 32:41Speaker 3: eventually caught her on the back. But that's how– And
- 32:44Speaker 3: she is texting me just angry the whole time. What
- 32:46Speaker 3: has happened? Yeah.
- 32:48Speaker 1: Little brother. What have we become? What is going on?
- 32:50Speaker 1: You work in media. What has happened to this city?
- 32:53Speaker 1: What is this? What has happened to this fan base?
- 32:55Speaker 3: This is unrecognizable to what I have seen before with
- 32:59Speaker 3: the Tennessee Titans. And my response is just to throw
- 33:02Speaker 3: my hands in the air and say, this is exactly
- 33:05Speaker 3: what I expected. I don't know what you expected showing
- 33:07Speaker 3: up to that stadium today. I can't advise anybody to
- 33:09Speaker 3: go to a game. I don't know why you would
- 33:11Speaker 3: have done that. Just stay at home.
- 33:13Speaker 1: Don't even watch it.
- 33:14Speaker 3: I mean, there's so many better things to do than
- 33:17Speaker 3: to sit and watch that. Especially to spend hard-earned money
- 33:20Speaker 3: to go try to navigate all the construction and everything else.
- 33:24Speaker 3: and walk your ass across a bridge or two to
- 33:26Speaker 3: get over to the game and park for a bunch of.
- 33:28Speaker 1: No! Don't do any of that. None.
- 33:30Speaker 3: None of it.
- 33:30Speaker 2: And don't you dare try to tune in to listen
- 33:32Speaker 2: to Play-By-Play. Listen to Pee-Wee's Playhouse on that.
- 33:35Speaker 3: Nope.
- 33:36Speaker 1: Nope.
- 33:37Speaker 2: It's not like Rackety Sax is playing while they're throwing
- 33:40Speaker 2: interceptions to lose the game.
- 33:43Speaker 1: Oh, man. Maybe the next coach is sidelined, but he's
- 33:48Speaker 1: the next coach.
- 33:48Speaker 2: Of the Tennessee Titans. Maybe the next coach to be criticized...
- 33:51Speaker 2: is Robert Sala by Mike Tomlin. That's next here on

- 34:48Speaker 2: Chad, how good has Mike Tomlin been? He's been a
- 34:51Speaker 2: natural at this. Really, really good. Really, really good.
- 34:55Speaker 3: And the best part about Mike Tomlin is the honesty
- 34:58Speaker 3: and the authenticity of him.
- 35:00Speaker 1: Really comes across.
- 35:02Speaker 3: You knew he'd be a great communicator in any setting,
- 35:05Speaker 3: just like he was as a coach in interviews, like
- 35:07Speaker 3: he was the coach to his team. He's that way
- 35:10Speaker 3: on television every Sunday night.
- 35:12Speaker 1: And you know me. I am a football night in
- 35:15Speaker 1: America loyalist.
- 35:16Speaker 3: I feel like since the start of this show, I
- 35:18Speaker 3: recorded every week and I watched start to finish every
- 35:20Speaker 3: to get the recap of the day and watch that show.
- 35:25Speaker 3: I thought Tony Dungy was excellent also. Just two very
- 35:30Speaker 3: different guys in their approach and how they do the job.
- 35:34Speaker 3: Tony Dungy also an excellent communicator, all those things. Tony
- 35:37Speaker 3: Dungy lost a lot of respect, I think, when he
- 35:39Speaker 3: wouldn't honestly answer about him being a part of the
- 35:43Speaker 3: people in the room that wanted to dock.
- 35:45Speaker 1: Bill Belichick a season. for everything that went on. You
- 35:48Speaker 1: could tell who it was. It was Polian. It was him.
- 35:51Speaker 3: The people who wouldn't answer or talk about it were
- 35:53Speaker 3: the ones that were the most adamant against it, and
- 35:56Speaker 3: I think that hurt his credibility a little bit to
- 35:58Speaker 3: not be honest and open about it.
- 36:01Speaker 1: That's not ever going to be the case of Mike Tomlin.
- 36:03Speaker 3: Mike Tomlin referred to it as negligent, coaching negligence, or
- 36:11Speaker 3: somewhat negligent when he talked about Brian Schottenheimer in the
- 36:14Speaker 3: end of that Ravens-Cowboys game.
- 36:16Speaker 1: And he went step by step. He's like the.
- 36:19Speaker 3: Clock management in the end to leave them so much time.
- 36:22Speaker 3: To kick the ball as the touchback to save them time.
- 36:25Speaker 1: Right through the end zone.
- 36:26Speaker 3: He said to give up that throw to Zay Flowers,
- 36:29Speaker 3: he said, what you're going to do here is play
- 36:31Speaker 3: what we call an umbrella zone. And you're not going
- 36:34Speaker 3: to allow any type of catch and run or.
- 36:36Speaker 1: Any situation like that. Everything stays in front. You come
- 36:39Speaker 1: up and tackle.
- 36:40Speaker 3: And he said it was somewhat negligent of the Cowboys
- 36:43Speaker 3: coaching staff at the end of that game. Now, for
- 36:46Speaker 3: us to say that, it wouldn't be out of line
- 36:49Speaker 3: or thought of as anything strange, right?
- 36:51Speaker 1: Both are true, yeah. Yeah, because we are going.
- 36:54Speaker 3: To come on and say what we feel at all times.
- 36:57Speaker 3: It's different from a former coach because we're not used
- 37:01Speaker 3: to it.
- 37:01Speaker 1: Why?
- 37:02Speaker 3: Because former coaches in media tend to protect other former coaches,
- 37:07Speaker 3: especially on– a high-level professional platform like NBC's Sunday Night Football.
- 37:14Speaker 3: NBC's Sunday Night Football is the most-watched show in America
- 37:17Speaker 3: pretty much every week of any television show. Live viewing,
- 37:21Speaker 3: it's going to be the most-watched show. It is a
- 37:23Speaker 3: highly professional, highly-watched operation, starting with that pregame show with
- 37:28Speaker 3: Mike Tomlin. So to hear a former coach come out, Hutton,
- 37:31Speaker 3: and just call it like it is, the Cowboys coach
- 37:34Speaker 3: has screwed this up. And I'm going to go ahead
- 37:36Speaker 3: and say it. When he said the Browns are going
- 37:38Speaker 3: to Browns, and then Todd Munkin got mad about it,
- 37:41Speaker 3: he came back and said, best part of this new
- 37:43Speaker 3: job is I can say whatever I want and face
- 37:45Speaker 3: no consequences for bulletin board material because I'm not coaching
- 37:49Speaker 3: another one of these teams.
- 37:51Speaker 1: I think that's a great sign for Mike Tomlin. All right.
- 37:53Speaker 1: I look forward to him criticizing Roger Goodell then. That
- 37:56Speaker 1: won't happen. Well, he's not going to criticize his boss.
- 38:00Speaker 1: Let's talk CTE. Let's talk CTE, Mike. That won't happen. No.
- 38:04Speaker 1: Say whatever the hell we want. No, you can't, Mike. No,
- 38:07Speaker 1: you won't.
- 38:08Speaker 3: But this is a step in the right direction. This
- 38:11Speaker 3: is a step in the right direction. Because if Mike
- 38:13Speaker 3: Tomlin went on there and criticized Roger Goodell or CT,
- 38:16Speaker 3: we would never hear from Mike Tomlin again. No. So
- 38:18Speaker 3: he wouldn't have any opportunity to further criticize anything else
- 38:21Speaker 3: on NBC.
- 38:21Speaker 2: He would be Arch Manning. He would be Arch Manning.
- 38:24Speaker 2: He would be talking, and then he would be mute.
- 38:26Speaker 1: Yeah. That's what would happen.
- 38:29Speaker 2: Look, I can't help but think, is this Mike Tomlin?
- 38:32Speaker 1: Is he.
- 38:34Speaker 2: Is he kind of putting his resume in for head
- 38:37Speaker 2: coach of the Dallas Cowboys?
- 38:41Speaker 1: Is this Mike Tomlin, who's going to be calling for
- 38:44Speaker 1: the Tennessee Titans? Let's go.
- 38:45Speaker 2: Let's go through the worst teams in the league traditionally
- 38:48Speaker 2: over the last 20 years.
- 38:50Speaker 1: Let's see. Browns, check. Cowboys, check. I can't wait for
- 38:54Speaker 1: him to talk about the Titans next. I know.
- 38:57Speaker 3: He's got to get to that at some point. I
- 38:59Speaker 3: would also say it's clear to me he doesn't want
- 39:01Speaker 3: to coach again. if he continues to do this, because
- 39:04Speaker 3: that's always the fear. It's like, well, I might want
- 39:06Speaker 3: to get a job someday, so I'm not going to
- 39:08Speaker 3: trash all my future competition at any point. Never say never.
- 39:14Speaker 3: John Gruden was that way for years and years on
- 39:16Speaker 3: Monday Night Football, and he went back and coached again. But, look,
- 39:20Speaker 3: I like the honesty with him. He didn't rip the
- 39:25Speaker 3: guy personally. He didn't get angry about it. He just
- 39:29Speaker 3: said very directly, this is negligence of the Cowboys coaches.
- 39:32Speaker 3: I don't know what they're doing with that one. Speaking
- 39:36Speaker 3: of negligence with coaches, just quickly, and I know that
- 39:39Speaker 3: we have the graphic to show it, Josh Heupel in Tennessee.
- 39:45Speaker 3: 0-7 in their last seven against ranked opponents. Now, this
- 39:49Speaker 3: goes back to 2024. I was trying to think when
- 39:51Speaker 3: they last beat a ranked opponent. They lost to Georgia
- 39:55Speaker 3: on the road in 2024, the playoff season. They lost
- 39:58Speaker 3: to Ohio State in the college football playoff. They didn't
- 40:01Speaker 3: beat a single ranked opponent a year ago, to my knowledge.
- 40:05Speaker 3: And now they started this season 0-1.
- 40:07Speaker 1: Not good, Bob.
- 40:10Speaker 3: It looks terrible, and I don't think Josh Heupel's a
- 40:14Speaker 3: negligent coach, but his clock management and late game management
- 40:18Speaker 3: and sometimes late half management is negligent. Yes.
- 40:22Speaker 1: And he's not improving.
- 40:23Speaker 3: I mean, to run four plays with a minute 22
- 40:25Speaker 3: left when you have the ball at midfield is negligent. And, Hudna,
- 40:30Speaker 3: I don't know what the answer is. We made fun of–
- 40:33Speaker 3: I forget the coach that we covered that had to
- 40:35Speaker 3: hire like a clock manager– Remember, it was like an
- 40:38Speaker 3: interim coach who was like, I'm going to have this
- 40:40Speaker 3: guy run the clock for me.
- 40:41Speaker 1: And manage that. Do that. I don't care. If you
- 40:44Speaker 1: have an.
- 40:45Speaker 3: Analyst right next to you that's telling you what to
- 40:47Speaker 3: call and what to do in those moments because you're
- 40:50Speaker 3: helping run the offense and do all that and you're
- 40:52Speaker 3: getting lost in the sauce of all of it and
- 40:55Speaker 3: not understanding how to manage a game late, I love
- 40:58Speaker 3: Josh Heupel. I think he's a really good coach, a
- 41:00Speaker 3: good leader. He's got to figure that out because this
- 41:02Speaker 3: has gone on way too long now. And I'm sorry,
- 41:05Speaker 3: but Tennessee's lost four of five at Neyland Stadium Against
- 41:08Speaker 3: SEC teams.
- 41:10Speaker 1: That's a huge advantage you have in that stadium. Stop
- 41:13Speaker 1: losing games at home. Massive, massive advantage. The expectation now
- 41:16Speaker 1: is you beat great teams at home.
- 41:18Speaker 3: The expectation for the Tennessee fan base when they play
- 41:20Speaker 3: Alabama will be to beat Alabama.
- 41:22Speaker 1: You know what's crazy, Chad? They've done it two times
- 41:24Speaker 1: in a row at Neyland.
- 41:25Speaker 3: The expectation now is to make it a third at home.
- 41:27Speaker 3: and beat them in Knoxville and hold serve. It's certainly
- 41:31Speaker 3: the expectation to beat Auburn at home this weekend. I
- 41:33Speaker 3: don't care if it is flooding the way the forecast
- 41:35Speaker 3: says and it's raining. I don't care if Noah looks
- 41:38Speaker 3: like he should be out there with an arc. You
- 41:40Speaker 3: run the football and you beat Auburn in front of
- 41:43Speaker 3: that crowd because that crowd is going to show up
- 41:45Speaker 3: even in a rainstorm every single time.
- 41:47Speaker 1: So that 0-7 stat, not good enough, got to be better.
- 41:51Speaker 3: And I think if you're looking for an individual coaching
- 41:53Speaker 3: thing that he's got to improve on, it's clock management.
- 41:57Speaker 1: It's game management late in close games. It's not good
- 41:59Speaker 1: enough for Heupel. Or game plan for your young quarterback.
- 42:02Speaker 1: That would be the other thing. Let's go five wide.
- 42:04Speaker 1: Let's go five wide and spread it out now. Time
- 42:06Speaker 1: to let it rip. Well, two things. And I think
- 42:09Speaker 1: he did a vast disservice to Faison Brandon.
- 42:12Speaker 3: And by the way, when I go back and watch
- 42:14Speaker 3: some of the game and really look into the numbers,
- 42:16Speaker 3: Faison Brandon and Arch Manning were pretty much the same
- 42:19Speaker 3: statistically in that game. One got sacked 10 times. Faison Brandon,
- 42:23Speaker 3: the other guy, got sacked six times. So the four-sack
- 42:25Speaker 3: difference is the biggest difference in that game. You've got
- 42:28Speaker 3: to help Faison Brandon. Yes, he has to help himself.
- 42:31Speaker 3: But you've got to get more of those throws across
- 42:33Speaker 3: the middle. As a first read, you've got to get
- 42:35Speaker 3: more of those tunnel screens. And here's the other thing.
- 42:37Speaker 3: How about run it to the outside one time? You're
- 42:40Speaker 3: running into the team of those huge tackles for Texas.
- 42:44Speaker 3: The middle of your offensive line can't block them. You've
- 42:46Speaker 3: got a right tackle problem right now in that game, too.
- 42:49Speaker 3: He's getting whipped on that side in Jesse Perry. So
- 42:52Speaker 3: let's run right into the teeth of the defense. How
- 42:55Speaker 3: about let's see if they can beat an edge rusher
- 42:57Speaker 3: to the corner a couple times or run it off
- 42:59Speaker 3: tackle with your running backs, who are very, very good,
- 43:03Speaker 3: by the way, for Tennessee. And they didn't do any
- 43:05Speaker 3: of that. That, to me, was what was the word
- 43:09Speaker 3: that Mike Tomlin used? Somewhat negligent. is how I would
- 43:14Speaker 3: refer to that game plan. Somewhat negligent for Josh Heupel
- 43:18Speaker 3: to not change and to have that as the game plan.
- 43:20Speaker 1: I'll say this, though, man.
- 43:21Speaker 2: The 0-7 record, sometimes that feels like 0-15, 0 for
- 43:27Speaker 2: the last 15. I see that and I'm like, man,
- 43:30Speaker 2: it feels like 0-4. It doesn't feel like 7. They
- 43:32Speaker 2: do a good job of hiding it and masking it.
- 43:34Speaker 1: You're also playing 7 or 8 ranked teams right now
- 43:36Speaker 1: in the SEC. Yeah. Yeah, but.
- 43:39Speaker 3: It is a bloat of ranked... The way the SEC,
- 43:43Speaker 3: the way the AP poll is structured, too, with the
- 43:45Speaker 3: preseason stuff, Texas A & M was preseason top five,
- 43:49Speaker 3: top ten. Oklahoma was preseason top ten. So the bloat,
- 43:53Speaker 3: the glut of SEC teams, you're just going to see
- 43:56Speaker 3: a bunch of teams with a number next to them.
- 43:58Speaker 1: That works both ways, though. Exactly. You've got to beat
- 44:01Speaker 1: one of the ones with a 22 or 23 on
- 44:02Speaker 1: their name when you're at home. Exactly.
- 44:04Speaker 3: That's the difference. But you're going to get... Point being,
- 44:08Speaker 3: that's over a pretty short period of time. They just
- 44:11Speaker 3: didn't beat anybody they shouldn't a year ago. They beat
- 44:14Speaker 3: all the teams they should for the most part, and
- 44:16Speaker 3: they couldn't get the game that they were not favored
- 44:18Speaker 3: in for Tennessee a year.
- 44:21Speaker 1: Ago with Joey Aguilar.
- 44:22Speaker 3: And a lot of this has to do with, I
- 44:25Speaker 3: think this is two straight years that he didn't have
- 44:28Speaker 3: his offseason quarterback plan. His plan was to start Nico.
- 44:32Speaker 3: And then that changed, and he got a good offense
- 44:34Speaker 3: with Joey Aguilar. It worked out, but I think the
- 44:37Speaker 3: plan was going to be for Joey Aguilar to win
- 44:39Speaker 3: and cord for him probably to come back. I don't
- 44:41Speaker 3: know that he was planning on this. That's not to
- 44:43Speaker 3: make any excuse. He's got a very talented freshman quarterback,
- 44:47Speaker 3: and I heard Greg McIlroy say, look, Tennessee fans don't
- 44:50Speaker 3: want to hear this. You're a year away. What happens
- 44:55Speaker 3: this year and the speed bumps along the way should
- 44:57Speaker 3: be looked at for building towards next year, right? You've
- 45:00Speaker 3: got to go beat somebody this year too, though. Because
- 45:03Speaker 3: Tennessee fans aren't going to sit around and hear that.
- 45:06Speaker 3: You're good enough to do it. You just played the
- 45:07Speaker 3: number one team in the country to a three-point game,
- 45:09Speaker 3: and you had no offense. Your defense is good enough
- 45:12Speaker 3: to go win you a big game this year, I
- 45:14Speaker 3: think is what we've seen so far with Tennessee. So
- 45:16Speaker 3: the quarterback's got to help out, and Josh Heupel's got
- 45:18Speaker 3: to help him.
- 45:19Speaker 2: Chad, I'm a fan of MTSU, Middle Tennessee State University.
- 45:22Speaker 2: You know what I'm not going to hear? You're a
- 45:24Speaker 2: year away.
- 45:24Speaker 1: It's not going to happen. I'm not going to hear that.
- 45:27Speaker 2: Take that as a nice congratulations, Chad.
- 45:32Speaker 1: You're a year away.
- 45:33Speaker 2: Because Derek Mason is the head coach of the Blue Raiders.
- 45:35Speaker 1: More on him next.
