- 0:00Speaker 1: Brought to you. Bob butter Chicken. The donut critic is here, Benjamin. Hi, Ben,
- 0:08Speaker 1: how's it going good?
- 0:09Speaker 2: Now?
- 0:09Speaker 1: There's not a donut on this plate, but there's sure
- 0:11Speaker 1: a bunch of Wow.
- 0:12Speaker 3: Well, Bill, I knew you were going to call that out.
- 0:15Speaker 1: There's little meat paws. Yeah for the camera there where
- 0:20Speaker 1: you go.
- 0:20Speaker 3: Yeah, we're eating hardy this morning.
- 0:22Speaker 4: When I picked these up and that tim was so heavy,
- 0:25Speaker 4: I thought, Okay, you guys are gonna be happy.
- 0:27Speaker 3: Even though it's not donuts. Where did you pick it
- 0:29Speaker 3: up from? So this is from Midvale.
- 0:32Speaker 4: It's a bakery called Sonato, And I want to clarify
- 0:36Speaker 4: that name.
- 0:36Speaker 3: So a lot of people have read that and it's
- 0:40Speaker 3: s A G A T O.
- 0:42Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 0:42Speaker 4: So if you've been to Shane Company, it's in that
- 0:45Speaker 4: strip mall right behind it and and so like, I
- 0:49Speaker 4: didn't want to say it and then have people be like, oh,
- 0:52Speaker 4: I'm looking for an N within that, but in the
- 0:55Speaker 4: Simon pronunciation, that G is an ng. So okay, yes, yes,
- 1:02Speaker 4: And that's how I set it for the first several
- 1:04Speaker 4: years when they had opened their shop. So I just
- 1:07Speaker 4: wanted to clarify that before. But this shop is on
- 1:10Speaker 4: third generation. Now this is wow, this is really cool
- 1:13Speaker 4: and the story just keeps getting better. In nineteen ninety four,
- 1:17Speaker 4: you know, they wanted to figure out some ways to
- 1:19Speaker 4: make some more money, and so this family, the Sonata family,
- 1:23Speaker 4: decided to start making desserts and pies and serving them
- 1:27Speaker 4: to friends and family, basically setting up a table in
- 1:30Speaker 4: a park and you know, inviting people to come, and like,
- 1:33Speaker 4: those are some of my favorite shops because then you
- 1:35Speaker 4: get the real food, you get a really good rich
- 1:38Speaker 4: history and recipes and whatnot. And so yeah, it started
- 1:42Speaker 4: like so many of my favorites.
- 1:45Speaker 2: These so there are well, uh, I guess they enumerate
- 1:49Speaker 2: the variety of meat pies that are on.
- 1:51Speaker 4: This Okay, so you have six varieties, so six flavors.
- 1:55Speaker 4: And the thing that I love about it is they
- 1:57Speaker 4: are so diverse. Sometimes you go into shops and it's
- 2:00Speaker 4: one and the same, you know, like I love and
- 2:02Speaker 4: Panada shops. But sometimes it's you taste one and you
- 2:05Speaker 4: taste small. But this has so much variety. So one
- 2:08Speaker 4: of the varieties is a butter chicken, which I think
- 2:11Speaker 4: is so delicious. That sauce is so creamy, and that
- 2:13Speaker 4: chicken is is you know, perfectly cooked and I love it.
- 2:18Speaker 4: And then on the other side of the spectrum, you
- 2:20Speaker 4: have like a steak and cheese, and I think that
- 2:23Speaker 4: steak just is so good. And if you notice, there's
- 2:25Speaker 4: a lot of cheese in that. And that's one of
- 2:27Speaker 4: the things that I really like about these pistes too,
- 2:29Speaker 4: is they don't you know, they don't skip on any
- 2:32Speaker 4: of the cheese or any of the topping. So but
- 2:35Speaker 4: you got a mushroom and steak, which was my favorite,
- 2:40Speaker 4: and you guys all, yeah, I think the sauce was
- 2:43Speaker 4: very good and savory. And then you have a curry.
- 2:46Speaker 4: You also have a chicken kind of like a chicken
- 2:49Speaker 4: pop pie. It's almost you know, that white sauce to.
- 2:52Speaker 1: It with the peas and carrots, yep.
- 2:54Speaker 4: And then for the traditionals, there is a mince and cheese,
- 2:57Speaker 4: so kind of like a hamburger in there.
- 3:00Speaker 1: These are all delicious.
- 3:02Speaker 2: Now about one thing that that makes them great is
- 3:05Speaker 2: that the crust is pretty much the same on all
- 3:07Speaker 2: of them, and it's really good crop.
- 3:09Speaker 4: And I was gonna call that out, Bill, Thank you
- 3:11Speaker 4: for calling that out, because when I go to a
- 3:14Speaker 4: really good donut shop, if the base dough is good.
- 3:17Speaker 4: Almost anything you put with it's gonna be good. And
- 3:19Speaker 4: these pies have an amazing crust to them.
- 3:23Speaker 3: It's flaky, it's good.
- 3:25Speaker 5: So so this is a Polynesian family. I guess I
- 3:28Speaker 5: just didn't realize hand pies were Polynesian food. Is that
- 3:31Speaker 5: traditional Polynesian food?
- 3:32Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 3:33Speaker 4: Traditional? He said that it's a Polynesian fusion. So it's
- 3:37Speaker 4: coming from multiple islands. It's not just one island. And
- 3:40Speaker 4: they've pulled in a lot of these fusion flavors from
- 3:43Speaker 4: different islands, Samoan, Hawaiian, and more or less, you know,
- 3:47Speaker 4: made it into a bakery that anybody could walk in
- 3:49Speaker 4: and be like, oh, yeah, this is the food I
- 3:50Speaker 4: had on Sunday. You know, this is Sunday dinner food,
- 3:53Speaker 4: but to the to the n degree, you know.
- 3:55Speaker 3: Because it's it's so delicious.
- 3:57Speaker 2: Wow.
- 3:58Speaker 4: But they used to have a place in London Market
- 4:01Speaker 4: if people you know know Saltlake. Well that closed in
- 4:04Speaker 4: twenty eighteen, and that was the jumping off point. That's
- 4:07Speaker 4: where they decided, oh well we need to start getting
- 4:10Speaker 4: our own place. Yeah, and so they invested in that
- 4:13Speaker 4: place in Midvell And so yeah, when you're around Shanko,
- 4:17Speaker 4: just drop in.
- 4:18Speaker 1: Now they have fish and chips really.
- 4:21Speaker 3: Oh they yes, fish and chips, really good fish and chips.
- 4:26Speaker 4: And then they have a battered and deep fried sausage
- 4:30Speaker 4: and chips.
- 4:31Speaker 1: What oh man, yes you do that. I should should
- 4:35Speaker 1: be against.
- 4:36Speaker 3: The law batter sausage.
- 4:38Speaker 1: But it sounds delicious.
- 4:39Speaker 4: Oh yeah, no, that was the first thing that come
- 4:43Speaker 4: my mind in my eyes, it was like, oh, oh
- 4:45Speaker 4: my gosh, I have to try that. But they also
- 4:48Speaker 4: have a ton of desserts too. So you go in
- 4:50Speaker 4: and there's a dessert section and you're trying cakes today.
- 4:54Speaker 4: So there's a Lambington, which these are cakes that are
- 4:57Speaker 4: dipped in chocolate and then filled with cream, and then
- 5:00Speaker 4: they have the top shaped coconut as well.
- 5:02Speaker 5: Mm.
- 5:04Speaker 1: Looks like they also do guava.
- 5:06Speaker 4: Cake, a glava cake and it's layered so it's got
- 5:08Speaker 4: guava cream guava and then then it's got that guava
- 5:12Speaker 4: gelatin on top that.
- 5:13Speaker 3: I really love.
- 5:13Speaker 1: Some custard tarts yep.
- 5:16Speaker 3: So they custard and fruit tarts there are all in.
- 5:20Speaker 2: So the meat pies there are there, hand pies there
- 5:22Speaker 2: are their hand side size and how how much is
- 5:25Speaker 2: it going to cost you? For?
- 5:25Speaker 1: Like you buy one?
- 5:27Speaker 3: So like it's gonna be under ten dollars.
- 5:29Speaker 4: And that's why they like it too, is you can
- 5:30Speaker 4: walk in and get a good lunch, a good hearty lunch,
- 5:33Speaker 4: for a very good price as well. So but yeah,
- 5:37Speaker 4: I think this is just a fun try. I just
- 5:40Speaker 4: sparely got back from Hawaii a couple of weeks ago
- 5:42Speaker 4: and I started looking at I thought, where am I
- 5:45Speaker 4: going to visit to get some good Hawaiian or Polynesian food?
- 5:48Speaker 4: And I found it there there you go. And then
- 5:50Speaker 4: catering they do also the Hawaiian plates, and so if
- 5:53Speaker 4: you're looking for catering, they do a lot of other
- 5:55Speaker 4: options that.
- 5:56Speaker 1: The plate lunch shout yep, yeah, and it's delicious.
- 6:00Speaker 6: So it's a forty four West seventy two hundred South
- 6:03Speaker 6: by the Shane Company.
- 6:05Speaker 4: And like I said, it's third generation and they're looking
- 6:07Speaker 4: to expand into new and fun flavors and so, and
- 6:12Speaker 4: when I was talking to him this morning, I love
- 6:14Speaker 4: that type of innovation, that type of attitude of hey,
- 6:17Speaker 4: we want to figure out those new and good trends
- 6:20Speaker 4: that people are loving and obviously bring the Polynesian flair.
- 6:24Speaker 4: And so I think that they're totally open to say hey,
- 6:26Speaker 4: what is it that people want in the community that
- 6:29Speaker 4: come from the.
- 6:29Speaker 6: Islands, like, oh, representative Verona Sun, how do you say
- 6:35Speaker 6: it again? Sanato, Sinato, Mauga. One of the good legislatures
- 6:39Speaker 6: is part of that family. Truly wonderful people.
- 6:41Speaker 1: Oh there we go. Well, these are delicious and the cake,
- 6:45Speaker 1: the cakes are great. This is really good. I gotta
- 6:48Speaker 1: go check this place.
- 6:48Speaker 3: So make sure to check that out.
- 6:50Speaker 4: One thing that I want to mention now is the
- 6:53Speaker 4: Donut Championship bracket. So we're in the eighth year of this.
- 6:57Speaker 4: This has been going on for many, many years with
- 7:01Speaker 4: many champions. Last year it was Donut Boy and I
- 7:04Speaker 4: brought in the champion. And the thing that I love
- 7:06Speaker 4: about it is he really embodied that champion this last year.
- 7:10Speaker 4: His bakery was just like pumping out some of the
- 7:13Speaker 4: best stuff. He had some of the most popular donuts
- 7:16Speaker 4: to come out of Utah. And so it was just
- 7:18Speaker 4: like that confirmation that we really are voting in the
- 7:20Speaker 4: people that are really knocking out of the park and
- 7:23Speaker 4: the donuts that you need to try.
- 7:24Speaker 1: So how do people get involved?
- 7:26Speaker 4: So on Monday, I am going to list the top
- 7:29Speaker 4: thirty two teams on my stories and what you do
- 7:32Speaker 4: is you vote in the polls. So it's going to
- 7:34Speaker 4: be the top thirty two teams, and it's going to
- 7:36Speaker 4: be sixteen matchups, just like the March Madness brackets, and
- 7:40Speaker 4: then we whittle it down each day with another round
- 7:43Speaker 4: until Saturday morning.
- 7:44Speaker 3: We will have our champion, and it's the donut Critic.
- 7:47Speaker 5: Yep, And I'm gonna repost your story today just because
- 7:51Speaker 5: that's a good easy link for people to see where.
- 7:54Speaker 1: It's actually not the donut critic. It's the donut critic.
- 7:58Speaker 3: The donut yeah ut.
- 8:00Speaker 4: See our it ic and go and follow me because
- 8:04Speaker 4: that's when you'll get notified when those polls come up.
- 8:07Speaker 4: But again, it starts on Monday. I'm going to be
- 8:09Speaker 4: doing some stories and other things over this week highlighting
- 8:12Speaker 4: those that have been nominated. And you know, inevitably people
- 8:16Speaker 4: are gonna be a little bit sad that their favorite
- 8:18Speaker 4: shop maybe doesn't make the top thirty two. If you
- 8:21Speaker 4: want to appeal, this is the time to appeal. We
- 8:23Speaker 4: have a committee going and we're seating you know, like
- 8:26Speaker 4: top top seeds, and that's how it kind of goes.
- 8:29Speaker 5: Is this is serious stuff. It is well, you don't
- 8:32Speaker 5: mess around with your donuts.
- 8:33Speaker 6: Let me just say I nominate that Chomp up in
- 8:37Speaker 6: Park City.
- 8:37Speaker 4: Chomp was delicious and they are going to be there.
- 8:39Speaker 4: And this is an interesting year because we have so
- 8:42Speaker 4: many new and big bakeries. We have a new Pink Box,
- 8:45Speaker 4: we have a new Chomp in Park City, we have
- 8:47Speaker 4: the new Sidecar.
- 8:49Speaker 1: Like there's so.
- 8:50Speaker 4: Many donuts that have like started parlor. I don't think
- 8:52Speaker 4: was even in it last year and so like now
- 8:55Speaker 4: like the yeah it's open, and we even have some
- 8:57Speaker 4: more come in this year that I'm going to start announcing.
- 9:00Speaker 4: But this is going to be a really cool bracket
- 9:03Speaker 4: and I'm curious to see who wins.
- 9:05Speaker 1: Just back to this a Sonato place for a second.
- 9:08Speaker 1: This chocolate cake, it tastes like a really good Hostess
- 9:13Speaker 1: chocolate cupcake.
- 9:14Speaker 3: So it's like what Hostess should be mean, I mean.
- 9:17Speaker 1: It's just like a really it is that, but what
- 9:21Speaker 1: it should be.
- 9:22Speaker 3: Yeah, it's like the chocolate cake.
- 9:23Speaker 4: It's got the the you know, hard fudge on top,
- 9:26Speaker 4: filled with fresh whipped cream.
- 9:28Speaker 3: Yes, exactly.
- 9:29Speaker 6: All right, Well thank you very much, Ben, all righty,
- 9:32Speaker 6: thank you all the.
- 9:33Speaker 1: Donut critic on Instagram is the best place to go.
- 9:36Speaker 1: Thank you.
