- 0:00Matthew chapter 26. Let us pray.
- 0:07Our Father who is in heaven, holy is your name, your Kingdom
- 0:16come, Lord, your will be done right here on this earth, just
- 0:23as it is in heaven. Give us today Our Daily Bread.
- 0:29Forgive us, Lord, for all of our sins as we forgive those who sin
- 0:36against us. Lord, not allow us to be LED
- 0:41into temptation. God, deliver us from our
- 0:46adversary, for yours is the Kingdom and the power and the
- 0:53glory forever. Amen.
- 0:57Let's start in verse one. And it came to pass.
- 1:03When Jesus had finished all these sayings, he said unto his
- 1:07disciples, What are all these sayings?
- 1:10Well, we just finished up two chapters back-to-back 1-2.
- 1:14Wham bam, the Olivet discourse, the these are powerhouses in the
- 1:21eschatology of Christ's return friends.
- 1:26They belong right up there with Revelation and Daniel,
- 1:29Thessalonians and Peter. There's so many chapters and
- 1:34even in the Old Testament, there are so many references to
- 1:38Christ's second advent. And we could spend an entire
- 1:41lifetime studying and debating about all of them.
- 1:45And just so we know, and just so we're clear, before we move into
- 1:49this passion of Christ here, I want everyone to know that the
- 1:57eschatology of Christ is meant to be somewhat vague.
- 2:03It is God's purposes to keep it somewhat vague so that we will
- 2:10always have the intrigue of what is to come.
- 2:15And Jesus told us, and he made it plain in the things that he
- 2:20wanted us to know, but we can only speculate about the things
- 2:25that he left out. And it's no different.
- 2:27They're out all of the Bible. God is so intent on how it is
- 2:33written and what is there and what is left out.
- 2:37Just so you are aware. And all we can do is speculate.
- 2:43But there are so many things in the Bible that He makes it just
- 2:47as clear and just as plain as day.
- 2:50And those are the things that we can stand upon.
- 2:53Those are the things that we do not need to get knocked off the
- 3:00stool from standing on. We need to make sure that we are
- 3:07students of the Word of God, that we own the Word of God,
- 3:10that we hide the Word of God in our hearts, and no one can talk
- 3:15us out of the things that are written in this book.
- 3:19But if it was not written, God did that on purpose.
- 3:24There was a reason for it. And it will all come to light as
- 3:28we get closer and closer and closer to His blessed return.
- 3:33Friends, what were all these sayings that Jesus had just
- 3:39finished saying to His disciples?
- 3:45Verse 2 You know that after two days is the feast of the
- 3:50Passover, and the Son of Man is betrayed to be crucified.
- 3:56So here again he's prophesying. He's telling them the mode of
- 4:01death, that he would have to suffer this crucifixion. 3 and
- 4:08then assembled together the chief priests and the scribes
- 4:11and the elders of the people, unto the palace of the high
- 4:16priest, who was called Caiaphas. So this Caiaphas here, there's a
- 4:21lot of history and we could go back and read about the
- 4:27historical documents of Caiaphas.
- 4:30But suffice to say that Caiaphas was double minded in the sense
- 4:37that he had his Jewish alliance, but he also was very good at
- 4:44intermingling the political powers of Rome into his office
- 4:49as well to appease Rome. And here you can see that
- 4:54Caiaphas is going to be the orchestrator of all these
- 5:00events, and he was being used by God, but never excused by God
- 5:07for and consulted that they might take Jesus subtly and kill
- 5:13him. So here Caiaphas has assembled
- 5:19in the palace the elders and the priests and the scribes.
- 5:24And there is speculation here that this was all illegal
- 5:32according to their own traditions, that they were not
- 5:35to do anything subtly and by night.
- 5:38But they feared the masses, they feared the people.
- 5:41And you can see their hypocrisy and duplicity being all played
- 5:47out right here as Caiaphas is wanting to take Jesus at night
- 5:55and do it subtly as to not make the masses aware of what they
- 6:01were about to do. 5 But they said not on the feast day, lest
- 6:07there be an uproar among the people.
- 6:11So they knew that they could not take Jesus in the middle of all
- 6:17the festival because the people would not allow it.
- 6:22There were many people who had come to see this miracle worker,
- 6:26and they had come to see their Liberator, but they had missed
- 6:29the fact that He was the Son of God.
- 6:32They had missed the fact that He was the Savior of the world, and
- 6:37they were just coming to see Him because they wanted to see a
- 6:40sign from Him. 6 Now when Jesus was in Bethany, in the House of
- 6:46Simon the Leper, who is this Simon the Leper?
- 6:49We don't know much about him, other than perhaps he was
- 6:53someone that Jesus had healed. And here he had kept the name of
- 6:58the leper to remind him of his healing, and here he was hosting
- 7:03Jesus. Seven.
- 7:06There came unto him a woman having an alabaster box of very
- 7:10precious ointment, and poured it on his head as he sat at meat.
- 7:15He was eating his dinner. And here comes Mary.
- 7:20Here comes the sister of Martha and Lazarus, and she has the
- 7:24expensive alabaster jar of spikenard that would have
- 7:30smelled like baby powder to us. And it was this wonderful
- 7:35fragrance and she was anointing him.
- 7:37And what was happening here, it transcended all of our own
- 7:43thoughts. This was the anointing of him
- 7:47for his death and burial and resurrection.
- 7:50And he went to the grave, He went to the cross smelling like
- 7:55this baby powder, smelling like this wonderful spikenard that we
- 8:00are familiar with. If you really sit and think
- 8:03about it, this is not a fragrance that is lost on us.
- 8:06This is a fragrance that we can go to the store now and open up
- 8:11a bottle and be able to catch the whiff of what Jesus actually
- 8:18smelt like on his day of death. Whenever we were bought with a
- 8:25high price, when he ransomed us, when he bought us back from sin.
- 8:30Here Mary perhaps not even knowing what she was doing in
- 8:34the sense of anointing, but Jesus had it all planned out and
- 8:38He moved the hearts and minds of his people.
- 8:41Here you can see how beautiful it's all coming to fruition as
- 8:45he sat there in this precious ointment and she poured it out
- 8:49and it was extravagant love and she was ready to be spilled out
- 8:54herself for her Savior. She loved this man.
- 8:57She saw that he was the son of God.
- 9:00She knew she chose the better she sat at his feet.
- 9:04She was willing to give all that she had.
- 9:07She would have given more. She loved him and she loved him
- 9:11well. And we're still talking the
- 9:13about her today. 8:00 But when his disciples saw it, they had
- 9:18indignation, saying, to what purpose is this waste?
- 9:21There was no waste. God wastes nothing.
- 9:24And here we can see this was Judas Iscariot.
- 9:28We can see that he was greedy for gain.
- 9:31He just wanted to be able to profit off of all of the riches
- 9:38that Jesus was amassing. And perhaps he wasn't amassing
- 9:41them to the amount or to the the quickness that Judas was after.
- 9:51He was wanting more and he was greedy for gain.
- 9:55And you could see it here in his statement when he says to what
- 10:00purpose is this waste? 9 For this ointment might have
- 10:04been sold for much and given to the poor.
- 10:07He cared nothing for the poor, he was just wanting it for his
- 10:10selfish gain. He used to take money out of the
- 10:13money bag, and when Jesus understood it, he said unto
- 10:18them, Why trouble you, the woman?
- 10:22For she has wrought a good work unto me. 11 For you have the
- 10:27poor always with you, but me you have not always. 12 For in that
- 10:33she has poured this ointment on my body, she did it for my
- 10:37burial. 13 Truly, I say unto you, wheresoever this gospel
- 10:44shall be preached in the whole world, there shall also this
- 10:48that this woman has done be told for a memorial for her.
- 10:53And we're still talking about what she did.
- 10:56We're still seeing it as the anointing of Jesus for his death
- 11:02and burial and resurrection. And we can see this beautiful
- 11:08picture of her heart, and you can see her being moved, and you
- 11:12can see the extravagance of her love.
- 11:15And we still are memorializing her for it.
- 11:19And Jesus is saying, yes, we should take care of the poor.
- 11:22Yes, we should think of the poor.
- 11:25Yes, we should be giving to the poor.
- 11:28But he's saying that this was a very, very special moment in the
- 11:33history of mankind. And she caught it.
- 11:37She actually understood that he was who he said he was, and she
- 11:43loved him and she loved him well. 14 Then one of the 12
- 11:49called Judas Iscariot went unto the chief priest.
- 11:53Perhaps that little show back there with Mary, perhaps that
- 11:58little show was what was the tipping of the edge for Judas.
- 12:03And it was all planned out. And Judas goes and he is wroth
- 12:08with indignation over the financial waste of the bottle of
- 12:14perfume, this alabaster of spikenard, and this was enough
- 12:19to push him over the edge. How many of us today were pushed
- 12:23over the edge by the most trivial things?
- 12:26That if we just stopped and if we just prayed, we would be
- 12:30comforted in the moment and we would see the bigger picture.
- 12:34We do not need to act on emotions, friends.
- 12:37We need to be grounded and rooted in the Word of God, and
- 12:40we need to let the Word of God be the guide who guides us home
- 12:45all the way to the end, Friends. 15 And he said unto them, What
- 12:49will you give me, and I will deliver him unto you.
- 12:53And they covenanted with him for 30 pieces of silver.
- 12:57And we could see that written back in Jeremiah, that he was
- 13:01sold for the price of a slave. He was sold for the price that
- 13:05Judas is going to buy the Potters field, for it was a
- 13:08worthless field that he went and hung himself in. 16 And from
- 13:13that time he sought opportunity to betray him.
- 13:17Here he is. He's incensed against the waste
- 13:20of the finances. He's incensed that Jesus did not
- 13:26take his side. 17 Now the first day of the Feast of Unleavened
- 13:31Bread, the disciples came to Jesus, saying unto him, Where
- 13:36will you that we prepare for you to eat the Passover?
- 13:4118 And he said, Go into the city to such a man, and say unto him,
- 13:47The Master says, My time is at hand, and I will keep the
- 13:51Passover at your house with my disciples.
- 13:55So we do not know the name of such a man.
- 13:58We can speculate till the cows come home, but we know that
- 14:02Jesus was going through and preparing the hearts and minds
- 14:06of people. And whenever the disciples went
- 14:09to this certain man, it was easy.
- 14:11And just remember that God opens doors that no man can shut, and
- 14:15he shuts doors that no man can open.
- 14:18It's easy for him, friends. And he just had to send the
- 14:21disciples into the city, and it was an open door.
- 14:26And if we will pray and believe and have faith, God will
- 14:29continue to open doors that no man can shut. 19 And the
- 14:33disciples did as Jesus had appointed them, and they made
- 14:38ready the Passover. What a beautiful thought this
- 14:42is. What a beautiful picture this
- 14:43is. What beautiful reality this is.
- 14:46These are real stories and real people in real places.
- 14:50Friends don't miss it. They're preparing the Passover.
- 14:54He's wanting, he's desirous, he's been waiting.
- 14:57He's eager to eat this Passover with his friends.
- 15:01And we know that He had to eat it before the sacrificing of the
- 15:07lambs. And He was the sacrificial lamb.
- 15:11And it was the hour that he was put up on the cross was the same
- 15:15hour that they were sacrificing the Passover lambs.
- 15:19And this is a beautiful picture of the wisdom of God.
- 15:23And we know that this chronologically was happening
- 15:27before the Jews were actually eating of the Passover.
- 15:31So Jesus in his infinite wisdom knew that He had to do this at
- 15:36this exact time. 20 Now when the evening had come, he sat down
- 15:44with the 12:21. And as they did eat, he said,
- 15:49Truly I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me.
- 15:52Can you imagine him sitting in the upper room?
- 15:55Can you imagine him sitting there with the 12 and he has the
- 15:59Passover prepared, but we know that he was the lamb.
- 16:03He has the bread and the wine there and He's desirous to teach
- 16:07them. And he's washing their feet and
- 16:10he says to them here, he says, he opens up and he says, 1 of
- 16:14you will betray me. What an opening. 22 And they
- 16:19were exceedingly sorrowful, and they began, one of them to say
- 16:23unto him, Lord, is it I? Can you imagine if Jesus would
- 16:28have revealed to the other 11 that Judas Iscariot was going to
- 16:34betray him? Can you imagine?
- 16:35But no, look at their hearts. Their hearts have been softened
- 16:39and they were just wondering and they wanted to make sure that
- 16:42they were not going to be the ones to do it. 23 And he
- 16:47answered and said, he that dips his hand with me in the dish,
- 16:52the same shall betray me. He's saying that it is one of
- 16:57his closest friends and his disciple there, and he's showing
- 17:03that there is commune community and a communal environment, and
- 17:08that the very one, it was not someone on the outside, the very
- 17:12one who had seen him and had seen him in his in his humanity,
- 17:17would be the one to betray him. And sometimes it can be the
- 17:21closeness of someone that causes us to look down upon them.
- 17:26And what a word here. Judas was so incredibly blinded
- 17:33and delusional by the greed of money that he missed Jesus as
- 17:38being the Son of God. 24 The Son of Man goes as it is written of
- 17:45him. But woe unto that man by whom
- 17:48the Son of Man is betrayed. It had been good for that man.
- 17:52If he had not been born, Judas was going to die a billion
- 17:57deaths over and never be able to die.
- 17:59And it would have been better if he had never been born.
- 18:02And all of these things had to happen.
- 18:05But it does not excuse Judas. What a thought, friends, that
- 18:12God already knows what we're going to do.
- 18:17What a thought? Is it predestination or is it
- 18:23free will? The answer is yes, God already
- 18:27knows what we're going to do. He gives us the free will.
- 18:32Judas had the free will. He could have repented.
- 18:35Judas had the free will. He did not have to sell out our
- 18:38master, but God already knew that he would.
- 18:45What a thought friend. 25 Then Judas, which betrayed him,
- 18:51answered and said, Master, is it I?
- 18:54He said unto him, You have said, Look at this hypocrisy of Judas.
- 19:00Look at this, how he tries to pretend as if Jesus doesn't
- 19:05already know. This is how you know that Judas
- 19:08did not understand Jesus as being the Messiah.
- 19:12That Judas did not understand that Jesus was who he said he
- 19:16was. He thought he was just some
- 19:18miracle worker that he could profit off of. 26 And as they
- 19:24were eating, Jesus took bread and blessed it and broke it and
- 19:31gave it to the disciples and said take, eat, this is my body.
- 19:36So here we can see that Judas had already gone out.
- 19:40He's speaking to the 11. Satan had entered into Judas,
- 19:43and Judas leaves to go and tell the chief priest where they
- 19:49could find Jesus. He was already looking for the
- 19:53opportunity, and he saw it here in this moment.
- 19:57And look at how Jesus is taking the bread.
- 20:01And he blessed it and he broke it and he gave it to the
- 20:03disciples. And he says, take it and eat.
- 20:06This is my body. So we do this in remembrance of
- 20:12Jesus. We could get into a lot of
- 20:14theological debates of what this bread actually signifies, but we
- 20:20know that. As we break the bread, we are to
- 20:24remember what Jesus did for us and how His body was broken for
- 20:30us, Friends. And we are to recall that back
- 20:33to mind as often as we eat. Friends, this isn't a special
- 20:38time. Once a month or a few times a
- 20:41year, or however often you partake of communion.
- 20:46This is. This is intended to be a daily
- 20:51devotion where we remember Jesus, we remember his body
- 20:56being broken. This was a common thing that
- 20:59they would eat is bread friends and drink the wine that is going
- 21:03to be mentioned. 27 He took the cup and he gave thanks and he
- 21:09gave it to them saying drink you all of it. 28 For this is my
- 21:18blood of the New Testament, which is shed for many for the
- 21:24remission of sins. So when we are covered in the
- 21:28blood of Christ, we are going to be looked upon by God as holy.
- 21:33All of our sins are thrown as far as the east is from the West
- 21:37because of what Jesus did on this night.
- 21:39Don't miss it, friends. 29 But I say unto you, I will not drink
- 21:46henceforth of the fruit of the vine, until that day when I
- 21:51drink it new with you in my Father's Kingdom.
- 21:56This is the marriage. This is the supper of the
- 22:01marriage that is mentioned in Revelation, where Jesus is going
- 22:06to drink of the wine in the Kingdom, and we are going to be
- 22:10there with him. All of us believers, praise God.
- 22:14Can you even imagine that He went to prepare a place for us,
- 22:19and God will prepare a banquet for us in the presence of our
- 22:23enemies. Praise the Lord.
- 22:25Jesus here is glorified in the highest, and He knows what He's
- 22:29doing. He knows what he's getting
- 22:31himself into. There is nothing missed upon
- 22:34Jesus in this moment. He knows that he is about to be
- 22:39crucified and handed over. 30 And when they had sung A hymn,
- 22:45they went out into the Mount of Olives.
- 22:50So here at the end of a Passover meal, Psalms 116 one 17118 would
- 22:59be read. And if you go and study those 3
- 23:02psalms, Psalms 116, Psalms 117, Psalms 118, go and study those 3
- 23:10psalms, you can see Jesus's heart.
- 23:13You can see that it was foretold long before that this night
- 23:19would come and David had caught a glimpse of it as he's
- 23:24worshipped the Lord. I pray that you have caught
- 23:27glimpses of the glory of God and your worship.
- 23:31Friends, I pray that you have had those experiences.
- 23:35I pray that God has been well pleased to visit you in your
- 23:39singing unto Him your worship unto the Lord.
- 23:42Do not be blinded by this world. Do not be blinded by all the
- 23:46cares of this world. Do not think and meditate upon
- 23:50all the things of pleasure in this world.
- 23:53I pray to God that you will worship Him in spirit and truth
- 23:58today, and that you will be visited upon, and that the Holy
- 24:02Spirit will well up within you, and that you will be overcome
- 24:07with His presence and undone in His presence.
- 24:10Friends. And here you can see Jesus
- 24:12singing unto God, knowing that He was the Lamb to be
- 24:17slaughtered, and he was going to be silent before his shears, and
- 24:21he's singing this hymn, him praise the Lord. 31 And then
- 24:25said, Jesus unto them all, you shall be offended because of me
- 24:30this night. For it is written, I will strike
- 24:33the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock shall be scattered
- 24:36abroad. So here Jesus knew that he was
- 24:40going to have to face all of this alone.
- 24:43He knew that it was written and prophesied about that he would
- 24:48scatter the sheep, that all the sheep would be scattered
- 24:52whenever the shepherd was struck.
- 24:54And you can see all of them running for their lives after
- 24:58Jesus gets arrested. God knows everything.
- 25:02Friends. 32 But after I am risen again, I will go before you into
- 25:07Galilee. Write it down, make a note.
- 25:10Look at how Matthew here, he catches this.
- 25:13He understood that Jesus said he was coming back.
- 25:16He understood that he was going to meet them in the upper room.
- 25:2233 Peter answered and said unto him, Though all men shall be
- 25:27offended because of you, yet I will never be offended.
- 25:31You know how many of us are like this.
- 25:33You know, it would do us well to not be offended by him.
- 25:38It would do us well when Jesus doesn't come through in the
- 25:41miracles. When Jesus doesn't come through
- 25:44for your marriage or your kids or for your health or whatever
- 25:48plagues you, friends. When Jesus allows you to go to
- 25:51the depths. Whenever you lose the job, when
- 25:54you lose the limb, whenever everything looks as if the it's
- 26:00all coming undone and unglued, and the phrase are showing and
- 26:04the belt snaps. And we would do well not to be
- 26:07offended by the ways of God, because his ways are not our
- 26:10ways. And here Jesus is showing Peter,
- 26:14Yes, you're all talk, and you look the part, but you will be
- 26:19offended because of me, and you will run for your lives, and
- 26:23you'll deny me three times, and you'll let a servant girl
- 26:28demoralize ye. 34 Jesus said unto him, Truly I say unto you,
- 26:36that this night before the cock crows, you shall deny me. 3 * 35
- 26:43Peter said unto him, Though I should die with you, yet I, I
- 26:48will not deny you. Likewise also said all the
- 26:51disciples, they took Peter's charge, they took Peter's lead
- 26:55and they said, no, no, no, we would not either.
- 26:58Can you imagine? They're arguing with God
- 27:01Almighty. How many of us do that?
- 27:03How many of us try to tell God how to behave or what should
- 27:06happen? How many of us try to sign our
- 27:09name on the prophecies? And we need to be in tune with
- 27:13God and what He says and what His Word says.
- 27:16Nothing added or subtracted, Friends, it's God's Word and
- 27:20God's Word alone that will reign supreme all the way to the end.
- 27:24And Jesus was telling them, and they would have done well to
- 27:28listen to what he had to say. 36 Then comes Jesus with them unto
- 27:35a place called Gethsemane, and said unto the disciples, Sit you
- 27:39here while I go and pray Yonder. So Jesus is telling them to sit
- 27:45and watch and to pray, and he's going to go over and pray.
- 27:52He wanted a time of seclusion. He needed to get a loan with the
- 27:57Father. And we know that Jesus often
- 27:59withdrew to lonely places, and we would do well to model our
- 28:04lives after that. We would do well to get out of
- 28:07the humdrum. We would do well to get out of
- 28:10the rat race. We would do well to get a loan
- 28:13with the Father, whether it's in your car, whether it's in the
- 28:16closet, whether it's in the woods, whether it's on the lake.
- 28:20We would do well to get a loan with the Father and to pray
- 28:24earnestly with him, and to pray earnestly for our brothers and
- 28:29sisters and for our family and our neighbors, friends. 37 And
- 28:35he took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began
- 28:39to be sorrowful and very heavy. So here you can see that Jesus
- 28:45is in agony, but he's in agony over the separation that he's
- 28:53about to experience from God. They had been in unity since the
- 28:59beginning and you can see that it sorrowed Jesus that the
- 29:09Father was going to turn His face.
- 29:12It was not sorrow for what He was about to have to endure.
- 29:16Don't miss it, friends. It was not sorrow because He
- 29:20could not bear the brunt of the physical attack that was about
- 29:24to happen. This is sorrow because He longed
- 29:29and He yearned for the communion with God Almighty.
- 29:35He became, he became exceedingly sorrowful and very heavy. 38 And
- 29:42then he said unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful even unto
- 29:49death. Tarry you here and watch with
- 29:53me. Jesus wanted his disciples to
- 29:57watch and to model their lives after the way that he was
- 30:03praying. He wanted them to see the model
- 30:08of what it looked like to not wrestle against flesh and blood,
- 30:12but against the darkness and the principalities.
- 30:16He wanted them to see what it looked like to be exceedingly
- 30:21sorrowful over the sins of the world which he was about to take
- 30:27on. 39 And he went a little further, and he fell on his face
- 30:36and prayed, saying, Oh my Father, if it be possible, let
- 30:41this cup pass for me. Nevertheless, not as I will, but
- 30:46as you will. Jesus here, He prayed and He
- 30:49knew that we should be praying as well, that it's his Kingdom
- 30:55come and His will be done. And he's asking the Father if
- 31:00there's another way. Take this cup.
- 31:03It was the cup of all of the sins of the world being poured
- 31:09out on him. It was the cup of God's wrath
- 31:12being poured out on Him here. This is not Him being afraid for
- 31:18his own life. It's not him trying to save his
- 31:21skin, friends, but he knows how to pray.
- 31:24And he says, Lord, I submit, and I surrender to your will,
- 31:28whatever it looks like. And we would do well to do the
- 31:31same, friends. And he's teaching his disciples,
- 31:34and he's teaching us what that looks like. 40 And he came unto
- 31:39the disciples, and he found them asleep.
- 31:42And he said unto Peter, What could you not watch with me one
- 31:47hour? And he says the same to you, and
- 31:49he says the same to me, Could you not pray with me for one
- 31:53hour? Friend, how many of us we get
- 31:57stuck in the rat race? How many of us we are so
- 32:02completely distracted? We live distracted lives, and we
- 32:06cannot even quiet our mind for an hour to pray with the Lord.
- 32:11And here he finds them sleeping. And so many of us have fallen
- 32:15asleep to the reality of what this word says.
- 32:18Far be it from us, friends. 41 Watch and pray that you enter
- 32:25not into temptation, that the Spirit indeed is willing, but
- 32:29the flesh is weak. How many of us can say that that
- 32:35the flesh is weak? We want to do the right things,
- 32:39but we cannot. We don't desire to do the wrong
- 32:42things, but those are the things that we do.
- 32:45How many of us can say that the Spirit is willing, but the flesh
- 32:50is weak, and we need to put the flesh under the reality of God's
- 32:57will for our lives. We need to make all of our
- 33:02senses subject to the reality that God and His infinite plan
- 33:11and wisdom Trump's all of our emotions.
- 33:14Friends. 42 And he went away again the second time, and
- 33:21prayed, saying, Oh my Father, if this cup may not pass away from
- 33:25me, except I drink it, thy will be done here.
- 33:29He's redeeming mankind. He's redeeming humanity as Adam
- 33:34squandered away our position with Christ, position with God
- 33:40Almighty here, Jesus Christ is getting it back.
- 33:45Jesus Christ knows that he will drink this cup and redeem
- 33:48mankind. 43 And he came and found them asleep again, for
- 33:53their eyes were heavy. How many of our our eyes are
- 33:56heavy? We're so incredibly desensitized
- 34:02to the spiritual. We're so desensitized by the
- 34:06relentless assault of information that continuously
- 34:12comes our way and the entertainment that continuously
- 34:16tries to vie for our attention and our allegiance.
- 34:19All of the perpetual idols that we pump out every single day
- 34:24that we set our eyes upon, we are heavy, we are heavy laden
- 34:29and we need Jesus. We need to be yoked with Jesus
- 34:32and let our burdens be light. Friends. 44 And he came. 44 And
- 34:39he left them and went away again and prayed the third time,
- 34:44saying the same words. So here we can see three prayers
- 34:50being prayed by Jesus, and he's praying to the Lord, and his
- 34:54he's got sweat like drops of blood. 45 And then comes he to
- 35:01his disciples, and said unto them, Sleep on, now take your
- 35:06rest. Behold, the hour is at hand, and
- 35:09the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.
- 35:13He knew this was coming. He knew that Judas had gone out.
- 35:17He knew that it was all about to happen, and He wanted his
- 35:23disciples to see his prayer life, to see what he had been up
- 35:31to when he would go away and pray to the Father.
- 35:36He wanted the disciples to model their prayer lives after this,
- 35:42and He knew that Judas was coming. 46 Rise, let us be
- 35:48going. Behold, He is at hand.
- 35:52That does betray me. 47. And while he yet spoke, lo
- 35:57Judas, one of the 12 came with him a great multitude, with
- 36:01swords and Staffs from the chief priests and the elders of the
- 36:06people. 48. Now he's now he that betrayed
- 36:09him gave them a son, saying, whomsoever I shall kiss, that
- 36:14same is he hold him fast. 49. And forthwith he came to Jesus
- 36:20and said, Hail, master, and kissed him. 50 And Jesus said
- 36:25unto him, Friend, why have you come?
- 36:31Then Jesus then came they and laid hands on Jesus, and took
- 36:36him. So here we can see that Judas
- 36:40betrays him with a kiss. You can see that he calls him
- 36:43Master and how he was so greedy that he had turned off his
- 36:51conscience. He had seared his conscience and
- 36:54here you can see Jesus still loves him and still looks at him
- 37:00and calls him friend. He knew what he was doing, but
- 37:04he was calling Judas to repentance in this moment.
- 37:09And Judas was so apostate that he did not actually believe.
- 37:15He did not actually believe it. It was just an outward
- 37:18expression. That's all it was.
- 37:20There was no inward change, friends, for Judas, he sat and
- 37:25he saw it all, and he still betrayed him. 51 And behold, one
- 37:35of them, which were with Jesus, stretched out his hand and drew
- 37:40his sword, and struck a servant of the high priest, and struck
- 37:47off his ear. So here you can see that Peter
- 37:53pulled his sword out, and we can see that the other Gospels
- 37:59expound on this moment. We can see how Jesus is so
- 38:05miraculous in his power that Jesus is going to have all the
- 38:11guards knocked back just by saying that he was who they were
- 38:16looking for, that I am. And they fall backwards and then
- 38:20they get up and they take him and hear Peter, who is trying to
- 38:27save his master from being arrested.
- 38:30He's trying to have some bravado here.
- 38:33Let's see what happens. We know that this high priest
- 38:38servant was Malchus. We know that during this time,
- 38:43history tells us that Rome would have actually supplied the
- 38:47temple because of the millions of people in that city, that
- 38:51Rome would have supplied the temple with some extra guards
- 38:55here. And these were the guards that
- 38:57were coming out to arrest this rogue St. preacher, who claimed
- 39:01to be the Son of God, the King of the Jews. 52 Then said Jesus
- 39:07unto him, Put up again your sword into his place, for all
- 39:12they that take the sword shall perish with the sword. 53 Think
- 39:19it's you that I cannot now pray to my Father, and he shall
- 39:23presently give me more than 12 legions of angels, when we know
- 39:28that one Angel could go into the Assyrian camp and kill 185,000
- 39:35soldiers, Just one Angel. Can you imagine this?
- 39:4012 Legions of angels at Jesus's disposal, waiting and ready.
- 39:48We know that an Angel came during his prayer in Gethsemane
- 39:53to strengthen him, and here he's showing his disciples, He's
- 39:57telling Peter, listen, I am not outnumbered in this moment.
- 40:02You do not have to try to stick up for me.
- 40:07All of this is marvellous and it must happen 54.
- 40:16But how then shall the Scriptures be fulfilled, that
- 40:19thus it must be He's telling them This is marvelous. 55 In
- 40:25that same hour, said Jesus to the multitudes, are you come out
- 40:30as against a thief with swords and staves for to take me?
- 40:35I sat daily with you teaching in the temple, and you laid no hold
- 40:38on me. It's because they feared the
- 40:40masses, friends, because the masses had believed on him, and
- 40:45they wanted him to be the Liberator, and Jesus was their
- 40:50savior. 56 But all this was done that the scriptures of the
- 40:55prophets might be fulfilled. Then all the disciples forsook
- 40:59him and fled. We can see that they struck the
- 41:03shepherd, and all the sheep scattered. 57 And they that had
- 41:09laid hold on Jesus led him away to Caiaphas the high priest,
- 41:14where the scribes and the elders were assembled.
- 41:18Look at this. This was in the middle of the
- 41:20night, friends, don't miss it. 58 But when Peter followed him
- 41:24afar off unto the high priest palace and went in and sat with
- 41:28the servants to see the end. So here he's following from a
- 41:33distance. He's not letting them know.
- 41:35He's on a covert mission. He's doing spec OPS.
- 41:38Here Peter is trying to disguise himself. 59 Now the chief
- 41:43priests and the elders and all the council's sought false
- 41:46witness against Jesus to put him to death.
- 41:49So this was false witness. They were breaking their own
- 41:52laws. They were breaking the law.
- 41:54They had got him by secret, they had got him at night and they
- 41:58were supposed to be doing any of these trials or anything is
- 42:02supposed to be done in the day and none of it counted,
- 42:05especially if there was false witness.
- 42:07They were supposed to be put to death, but instead these false
- 42:10witnesses were actually being used to try to put God's Son,
- 42:15God Almighty to death. Can you imagine the hostility of
- 42:19man towards God? Friends, look at it.
- 42:22It's been going on ever since the garden.
- 42:25It's been going going on ever since Cain killed Abel.
- 42:29We can see the hostility towards God and is culminating in this
- 42:33moment. 60 but found none. Yeah, though many false
- 42:38witnesses came, yet found they none at the last came two false
- 42:43witnesses. They were worthy of death.
- 42:46Let's see what happens to him. 61 and said, this fellow said, I
- 42:50am able to destroy the temple of God and to build it in three
- 42:54days. This would have been likened to
- 42:58a bomb threat. This would have been likened to
- 43:00someone saying that I'm going to destroy the temple.
- 43:03They did not know that he was talking about himself.
- 43:06We learned that later. 62 in the high priest arose and said unto
- 43:11him, answer is you nothing. What is it which these witnesses
- 43:17against you? So this Caiaphas, he's so
- 43:22indignant. He sees that this is a mock
- 43:24trial. He sees that this trial is a
- 43:27hung jury. He sees that this is not going
- 43:33in the way that he had hoped. There was no one that could
- 43:36bring any credible evidence against Jesus because Jesus was
- 43:40spotless and sinless and he had done nothing wrong.
- 43:44Friends, don't miss it. He was perfect in all of his
- 43:48ways. 63 But Jesus held his peace, and the high priest
- 43:53answered and said unto him, I adjure you by the living God,
- 44:01that you tell us whether you be the Christ, the Son of God.
- 44:06So here he's calling upon God Almighty, and he's speaking to
- 44:12God Incarnate, and we can see that he is so indignant and so
- 44:19debased and so delusional. 64 Jesus said unto him, You have
- 44:29said, Nevertheless, I say unto you, Hereafter shall you see the
- 44:35Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the
- 44:40clouds of heaven? So we can see that Jesus is
- 44:44showing Caiaphas that He has all the power over him.
- 44:48There is no power that has been given to Caiaphas that is
- 44:52greater than the power that God has over Caiaphas.
- 44:58And that is what Jesus is telling him, that he is the Son
- 45:01of God. He said, You said it. 65 Then
- 45:05the high priest ripped his clothes, saying he has spoken
- 45:09blasphemy. What further need have you have
- 45:13we of witness? Behold, now you have heard his
- 45:18blasphemy. So he charges Jesus with
- 45:21blasphemy, but it is he himself that is guilty of the blasphemy.
- 45:27That is the pot calling the kettle black.
- 45:29They're friends. You can see it.
- 45:32You can see how evil works. Anytime there's evil, they're
- 45:36going to call evil good and good evil.
- 45:38Anytime you're dealing with an evil person, they're going to
- 45:41try to twist all of your words against you, friends, but stand
- 45:46firm to the end. 66 What do you think?
- 45:50They answered and said he is guilty of death.
- 45:54How ridiculous Jesus Christ, who had done nothing wrong, being
- 45:58guilty of death. 67 Then they spat in his face, and they
- 46:05struck him, and others smote him with the palms of their hands.
- 46:10They slapped him, and they struck him, and they spat on
- 46:14him, the Son of God. And that is what has been going
- 46:22on ever since Ain't Killed Abel. That is what has been going on
- 46:27all the way up to the present moment.
- 46:31It was just very unique at this moment that God was Incarnate
- 46:36here with man. He was Emmanuel and we treated
- 46:41him physically in the same manner that we treat him every
- 46:44day. When we turn our backs on Him,
- 46:47we are not in this good book, learning and sitting at His feet
- 46:51and obeying these words. When we choose the world over
- 46:55Him, we are striking Him and spitting in His face.
- 46:59When we are apostate and we are teaching false doctrines, when
- 47:06we are after selfish, greedy gain, we are like these people.
- 47:13We spit in his face, friends, when we turn our backs on Him,
- 47:2168 saying prophecy unto us. Christ, who is he that struck
- 47:27you? You can see that they're mocking
- 47:30him. They're ridiculing him.
- 47:35And what does Jesus do? He has such patience here with
- 47:39His creation, and he has that same patience with us today.
- 47:43Friends, don't miss it. He is long-suffering.
- 47:49He is not willing that any should perish, for he loves the
- 47:53world, the whole world, that whosoever shall believe in him
- 48:00will not perish but have eternal life.
- 48:03He's so patient with this. Friends, don't miss it. 69 Now
- 48:06Peter sat outside in the palace, and a damsel came unto him,
- 48:12saying, You also was with Jesus of Galilee.
- 48:17His speech would give him away, and we're going to see that.
- 48:26But this damsel, she recognizes Peter.
- 48:31Let's see what he says. 70 But he denied before them all,
- 48:34saying, I know not what you're saying here.
- 48:39Peter is denying our Christ the first time, and it was all
- 48:43predicted, wasn't it? 71 And when he was gone out into
- 48:50the porch, another maid saw him and said unto them that were
- 48:55there this fellow was also with Jesus of Nazareth.
- 48:59So perhaps fear had plagued Peter in this moment and he was
- 49:04afraid of the same treatment that Jesus was getting at this
- 49:08moment. And he denied Christ.
- 49:12Perhaps it was for some kind of honorable reason that he thought
- 49:17that by staying alive he could try to get Jesus out of the mess
- 49:22that he was in while he was in this spec OPS special operation
- 49:27here, this covert operation undercover.
- 49:32And he's trying to pretend as if he doesn't know Jesus.
- 49:35But Jesus already knew it, didn't he?
- 49:38He called it out. 72 And again he denied with an oath, I do not
- 49:46know the man. So he's saying, I promise I
- 49:48don't know him. 73 And after a while came unto him, they that
- 49:55stood by and said to Peter, Surely you also are one of them
- 50:01for your speech, Barathe your speech gives you away. 74 Then
- 50:12began he to curse and to swear, saying, I know not the man that
- 50:17immediately the cop group. The Bible doesn't even try to
- 50:21mimic the words that were spoken.
- 50:23We're just giving a vague, we're giving a vague description of
- 50:28this swearing and cursing that took place.
- 50:34And you can only imagine what those words might have been, but
- 50:38just know they were vehement. Just know that he said it
- 50:42passionately, that he was swearing up and down that he did
- 50:46not know Jesus. Imagine that, friends.
- 50:51Imagine this backsliding that is going to break Peter's heart.
- 51:00The rooster crows 75 will end here.
- 51:03And Peter remembered the words of Jesus, which said unto him
- 51:06before the cock crows, You shall deny me three times.
- 51:12And he went out and wept bitterly.
- 51:17We know from the Gospel of Luke that right at that moment, Peter
- 51:23was denying Jesus, Jesus was being let out.
- 51:29And Jesus looks over and locks eyes with Peter and it breaks
- 51:36Peter. And he doesn't just cry, he
- 51:40weeps bitterly. Have you ever been broken for
- 51:44your sins, friends? And how we've treated Jesus, how
- 51:48we've treated God, and he's been so kind.
- 51:53Hope that you have been broken over all, all the times that
- 51:58you've broken the Lord's heart with your denial of Him in front
- 52:03of people. If you want to be a rebel in
- 52:07today's society, bring your Bible with you everywhere you
- 52:11go. Watch all the sneers and jeers
- 52:14and the conversations that get started.
- 52:20Let's stand for Christ today. Let's not allow Him to be
- 52:25marginalized in our lives, in the workplace and our families,
- 52:30in our personal life, in our digital life, the digital
- 52:36footprint that we all are amassing.
- 52:39And just remember, it is by your words that you're justified.
- 52:43And it is by your words that you are condemned, friends.
- 52:46And we need to be speaking out for Christ, standing up for
- 52:51Christ and all the things that he taught us and to be
- 52:54sanctified, to be made more like him today than you were
- 52:58yesterday. I hope you've been blessed by
- 53:00this marvellous, beautiful masterpiece of a chapter.
- 53:08I'm praying for every single one of you.
- 53:10I love you. We'll see you back here
- 53:12tomorrow. God bless you.
