Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: New report this morning, warning we need a lot more
- 0:02Speaker 1: workers in the energy sect and pretty quickly too. Workforce
- 0:05Speaker 1: needs to grow from about eighteen thousand presently to more
- 0:08Speaker 1: than thirty twenty forty. Biggest problem is not just hiring workers,
- 0:13Speaker 1: but how long it takes to turn new employees into
- 0:16Speaker 1: fully competent workers. And they need to be competent to
- 0:19Speaker 1: do the job, don't they. Nicki Sutherland Electricity Engineers Association
- 0:22Speaker 1: CEO of ME this morning, Hey, Nicki, Hey, good morning, Awning,
- 0:26Speaker 1: good thank you. I was reading in this report that
- 0:28Speaker 1: we currently demand exceeding supply for electrical engineers. So if
- 0:32Speaker 1: we want a job, we just got to become an
- 0:33Speaker 1: electrical engineer.
- 0:37Speaker 2: Yeah, that's right. Well, the outousy sector takes people from
- 0:41Speaker 2: all different walks of life and all different polls of talent,
- 0:46Speaker 2: so electrical engineers by all means, but we want people
- 0:51Speaker 2: from right across the spectrum.
- 0:53Speaker 1: Why is it growing, Why the need to go from
- 0:55Speaker 1: eighteen thousand to thirty thousand plus.
- 1:00Speaker 2: Well, this is about electrocution electrification, but it's also just
- 1:04Speaker 2: about the fact that the electricity sector is becoming now
- 1:07Speaker 2: about powering the economy, and about the key and apor
- 1:11Speaker 2: to prosperity full stop. We should be very proud of
- 1:16Speaker 2: our electricity sector. We're one of the most innovative and
- 1:19Speaker 2: most renewable on the planet. So it's an attractive case
- 1:22Speaker 2: that people come to work, and we just need more
- 1:26Speaker 2: people for today and for the future.
- 1:28Speaker 1: Is the problem attracting them to the idea of working
- 1:32Speaker 1: in the energy sector or is the problem training the
- 1:34Speaker 1: people up that you've got to be good enough.
- 1:39Speaker 2: Well, there's a mix of both really, and the reason
- 1:43Speaker 2: that we're looking at this now is it's about future
- 1:45Speaker 2: proofing the industry that we're realizing increasingly is fundamental to prosperity.
- 1:51Speaker 2: We're saying there's no crisis now, so we've identified the
- 1:54Speaker 2: issues that we need to get ahead of and putting
- 1:57Speaker 2: a plan in place.
- 1:59Speaker 1: Appreciate your time this morning, Nicki. Thank you. Nicki Sutherland
