- 0:21Speaker 2: It's twenty two minutes past eight o'clock. You are listening
- 0:23Speaker 2: to ask the expert WCHS the Voice of Charleston. It
- 0:26Speaker 2: is a Tuesday in the month of May. Welcoming into
- 0:31Speaker 2: the sery this morning, Doctor Carson Henley from Garia Dental
- 0:34Speaker 2: Group of the Kanoff City location, flying solo this morning,
- 0:37Speaker 2: Doctor Henley, Good morning.
- 0:37Speaker 3: How you doing this morning?
- 0:38Speaker 4: You can just call me Jason Derulo. Ah, oh okay,
- 0:41Speaker 4: very good. Hey, I already made that joke you did,
- 0:43Speaker 4: but that's okay through text.
- 0:44Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, Now the world gets to everybody gets the
- 0:46Speaker 2: hero it at one time. That's absolutely correct. Welcome in
- 0:49Speaker 2: this morning. Thank you so much for coming in. And
- 0:51Speaker 2: uh on the other side of Memorial.
- 0:53Speaker 3: Day, I know.
- 0:54Speaker 4: So this was such a weird weekend because it rained
- 0:58Speaker 4: all weekend. Because normally you have cookie to have all
- 1:00Speaker 4: this fun stuff and we did have fun, but unfortunately
- 1:04Speaker 4: it did kind of it was. It was good for
- 1:07Speaker 4: the flowers, is what else that's for sure. So there
- 1:10Speaker 4: there's all kinds of things that we have to talk
- 1:12Speaker 4: about this one. Let me get our information out there
- 1:14Speaker 4: for you and give us a call this morning. Three
- 1:15Speaker 4: zero four three four five fifty eight fifty eight. Three
- 1:17Speaker 4: zero four three four five fifty eight fifty eight.
- 1:19Speaker 2: You can text three zero four non three five five
- 1:21Speaker 2: zero zero eight if you have any questions for doctor
- 1:24Speaker 2: Henley as we go throughout the morning this morning. We
- 1:26Speaker 2: have several things we're going to talk about this morning.
- 1:28Speaker 2: We want to talk about some new insurance for Kennaw
- 1:31Speaker 2: County Schools employees. We're going to talk about what happens
- 1:33Speaker 2: when you go under sedation, some sprucing up, and some
- 1:36Speaker 2: new things over at doctor Henley's location. All kinds of
- 1:39Speaker 2: things that we're going to get into this morning, So
- 1:41Speaker 2: please give us a call three zero four three four
- 1:43Speaker 2: five fifty eight fifty eight. You can text three zero
- 1:45Speaker 2: four non three five five zero zero eight one line.
- 1:47Speaker 2: You can read along and find out more at the website.
- 1:50Speaker 2: It's GREEB Dentalgroup dot com. G h A r e E. B.
- 1:52Speaker 3: Garibe Dentalgroup dot com.
- 1:55Speaker 2: I know there's lots of things that we need to
- 1:56Speaker 2: get into a little bit this morning, but that date
- 1:58Speaker 2: is kind of looming here with Delta Dental and Kannaw
- 2:03Speaker 2: County Schools. That is, there's a big change that's taking
- 2:05Speaker 2: place there, and I know that you guys are positioned
- 2:08Speaker 2: well with the new Bento insurance.
- 2:10Speaker 4: That is correct. So all you Kannaw County school peeps
- 2:13Speaker 4: out there, I think there's four or five thousand of you.
- 2:17Speaker 4: Last I heard it was upwards of three thousand had
- 2:20Speaker 4: signed up. But we still need or you know, if
- 2:23Speaker 4: you'd like to have dental insurance provided free by the county,
- 2:28Speaker 4: then you do need to go to binto dot something
- 2:31Speaker 4: and sign up. Otherwise, if you do not, you are
- 2:34Speaker 4: not privy to dental insurance for the next year because
- 2:37Speaker 4: in years past they would automatically switch over or enroll
- 2:41Speaker 4: you if you if you had already been enrolled in
- 2:43Speaker 4: the dental insurance, that would just roll you over. But
- 2:46Speaker 4: just because of this new insurance, they are not doing that.
- 2:50Speaker 4: So you need to do go online and do it yourself.
- 2:53Speaker 4: So we're trying to get the word out and Bento
- 2:56Speaker 4: is one of those really cool insurances where it's kind
- 2:59Speaker 4: of takes the middleman. They are not really insurance, They
- 3:02Speaker 4: kind of just are a provider that accepts the money
- 3:05Speaker 4: and pays it to the provider. So it's a really
- 3:06Speaker 4: cool setup. Our reinbursement rates are more competitive and the
- 3:11Speaker 4: cost to the county is actually lower, so it's a
- 3:15Speaker 4: win win for everyone the way I see it. Also,
- 3:19Speaker 4: I do want to kind of point out whether or
- 3:22Speaker 4: not certain offices are in network, because this is a
- 3:27Speaker 4: new insurance for many especially a lot of the dentists
- 3:31Speaker 4: are used to sending in a fax or sending in
- 3:33Speaker 4: a paper form where their staff is used to doing
- 3:37Speaker 4: that for claims. Binto is all online, so you pretty
- 3:42Speaker 4: much have to send in a PDF through email or
- 3:44Speaker 4: through their online portal. And what's so convenient about that
- 3:48Speaker 4: is you get paid the same day instead of thirty
- 3:51Speaker 4: to sixty days later. But also there is some growing
- 3:54Speaker 4: pains there if you're not used to some of this
- 3:57Speaker 4: advanced technology. Unfortunately us at Green Dental Group, we are
- 4:01Speaker 4: used to this advanced I'm doing air quotes, advance technology,
- 4:06Speaker 4: you know, the twenty first century welcome and so there
- 4:09Speaker 4: is some growing pains there. So if you have any questions,
- 4:12Speaker 4: call your dentist make sure they are signed up within
- 4:15Speaker 4: the portal. I do believe all of our locations are
- 4:19Speaker 4: signed up through the portal, but not all our locations
- 4:21Speaker 4: will be in network with Binto. What does that mean?
- 4:25Speaker 4: We will take it no matter what. As long as
- 4:28Speaker 4: we are signed up in the portal, we can bill it,
- 4:29Speaker 4: we can take it. We can make sure that you,
- 4:32Speaker 4: the person who has that insurance, can actually read the benefits. However,
- 4:38Speaker 4: we not every dentist within our network within Greeddental Group
- 4:42Speaker 4: has signed up to be a network provider, meaning there
- 4:46Speaker 4: will be probably just a little higher out of pocket
- 4:48Speaker 4: costs with some of us.
- 4:51Speaker 2: Is there any major difference? This really plays out pretty
- 4:55Speaker 2: well for everybody involved. I mean, the customer service and
- 4:59Speaker 2: what the patie gets is from everything you've been able
- 5:02Speaker 2: to find that I've come across, is very good. And
- 5:05Speaker 2: then also for the care that it takes for the
- 5:07Speaker 2: doctors making sure that you get paid and everything.
- 5:09Speaker 3: I mean, it seems like a good situation.
- 5:11Speaker 4: It is a a great situation. We actually have a
- 5:17Speaker 4: few patients that have it. I think a county converted
- 5:21Speaker 4: over to BINTO a few years back, so we have
- 5:23Speaker 4: a couple patients that are employees of that county school system.
- 5:27Speaker 4: And I remember when we first experienced SPINTO, my staff
- 5:33Speaker 4: were like freaking out like what is this? This is
- 5:35Speaker 4: not normal, and I'm like, it's a good thing, right.
- 5:37Speaker 4: They're like, yeah, well it's not normal, but it's a
- 5:40Speaker 4: good thing. It's like a new normal, right. It's how
- 5:43Speaker 4: insurance should be. Where you build for a procedure and
- 5:48Speaker 4: you know exactly what the price is going to be.
- 5:50Speaker 4: You can immediately put in those procedures into the online
- 5:53Speaker 4: portal and you can tell the patient this is going
- 5:55Speaker 4: to be your out of pocket cost. Are you sure?
- 5:57Speaker 4: I'm pretty sure because it tells me right here instantly,
- 6:01Speaker 4: And unfortunately I'll kind of kind of dig or reveal
- 6:05Speaker 4: the curtains of other insurance companies or what I'll say,
- 6:09Speaker 4: what the norm is, Uh, let's do a pre procedure,
- 6:14Speaker 4: a pre authorization. If you come into my office and
- 6:17Speaker 4: I tell you, hey, you have a crack tooth, or
- 6:19Speaker 4: hey you have a large fracture, and you're like, yeah,
- 6:20Speaker 4: it's spoken my tongue, and I say you need a crown,
- 6:24Speaker 4: and you say, well, actually, I just want to make
- 6:26Speaker 4: sure my my insurance will cover this. And so what
- 6:29Speaker 4: we might do is we'll do a pre authorization where
- 6:31Speaker 4: we take an X ray, We even might take a photo,
- 6:34Speaker 4: we send it into your insurance and we say, doctor
- 6:37Speaker 4: Henley believes this toothing it's a crown authorize it please,
- 6:42Speaker 4: And it's kind of more complicated than that. But then
- 6:44Speaker 4: so they get back to us and they say, this
- 6:46Speaker 4: is how much we'll cover, this is what the fee is, this,
- 6:48Speaker 4: YadA YadA. And what's unfortunate is they don't always go
- 6:53Speaker 4: off of that pre authorization. We have actually had multiple
- 6:56Speaker 4: experiences within the last year where we will authorized something
- 7:00Speaker 4: and then once we actually well and then we'll tell
- 7:03Speaker 4: the patient this is what we get, this is what
- 7:05Speaker 4: we believe we will get paid, what you will get
- 7:08Speaker 4: reversed for whatever. And then what might happen is we
- 7:12Speaker 4: actually do the procedure and then we bill for that
- 7:14Speaker 4: procedure to the insurance company and it's actually a different outcome,
- 7:19Speaker 4: which is just mind boggling.
- 7:21Speaker 3: How can that be? I mean, just honest, I have.
- 7:23Speaker 4: No idea, and so it's it's it's it can be
- 7:26Speaker 4: very frustrating. And so the idea that DENTO is instant instant,
- 7:31Speaker 4: it's air quotations, meaning same day you know exactly what
- 7:35Speaker 4: they're going to pay. And so I'm sure there's gonna
- 7:38Speaker 4: be some growing pains because it is so new, and
- 7:40Speaker 4: so everyone out there please be patient with these dentists
- 7:44Speaker 4: that are experiencing something new. Even my office, even though
- 7:47Speaker 4: we have experienced it, it's just going to be something new,
- 7:50Speaker 4: and so new is not always better, but in this case,
- 7:54Speaker 4: I think it is better.
- 7:55Speaker 2: From the end of the the casey CACS employees, you
- 8:00Speaker 2: need to be aware of this as well. So you
- 8:01Speaker 2: need to make sure that if you have the option
- 8:03Speaker 2: to elect into the insurance or whatever it may be,
- 8:05Speaker 2: you need to make sure that you're doing that to
- 8:07Speaker 2: make sure you're taking care of is correct.
- 8:09Speaker 4: We do not want you to lose out on this
- 8:12Speaker 4: free benefit provided by our county levies, and so we
- 8:16Speaker 4: want to make sure that those levy tax dollars that
- 8:20Speaker 4: we so graciously vote into or elect, you know, over
- 8:25Speaker 4: and over, we want to make sure that we maximize
- 8:28Speaker 4: the benefit to our Conk County School System employees because
- 8:33Speaker 4: they work so hard and we want to make sure
- 8:34Speaker 4: that they reap the benefits.
- 8:37Speaker 2: Limited answers for questions as far as specifically about Bento
- 8:41Speaker 2: on that side of the process goes. You have to
- 8:43Speaker 2: take care of your employeer, but if you have any
- 8:44Speaker 2: other questions, this morning about this or anything else on
- 8:47Speaker 2: your dental healthy and gifts A call three zero four
- 8:49Speaker 2: three four five fifty eight fifty eight threes are A
- 8:51Speaker 2: four three four five fifty eight fifty eight is our number.
- 8:53Speaker 2: You can also text in questions to three zero four
- 8:55Speaker 2: non three five five zero zero eight threes are A
- 8:57Speaker 2: four non three five five zero zero eight. I wanted
- 9:00Speaker 2: to touch on just a little bit this morning as well.
- 9:02Speaker 2: Some uh, some upgrades around the office over in Kanaal City,
- 9:06Speaker 2: some uh uh some new equipment and things to tell
- 9:09Speaker 2: us about what's going on over in uh in doctor
- 9:12Speaker 2: carson Land.
- 9:12Speaker 4: Oh maybe it is an exciting time in Canal City.
- 9:17Speaker 3: Uh, isn't it always while you live? Like, yeah, we're neighbors.
- 9:23Speaker 4: Uh and I live four minutes away, so it is
- 9:25Speaker 4: a tough commute, y'all. I'm telling you, uh so so
- 9:29Speaker 4: here in my office specifically, I recently bought some new chairs.
- 9:32Speaker 4: I think I mentioned this last month, But these new chairs,
- 9:36Speaker 4: I tell you, my staff will walk by the operatory
- 9:40Speaker 4: sometimes and just see me napping. And at this point
- 9:43Speaker 4: they don't even make a comment. They go, well, there's
- 9:45Speaker 4: doctor Henley napping again. Just is what it is, because
- 9:48Speaker 4: they these chairs are so comfy. Uh, the leather's super nice. Also,
- 9:53Speaker 4: there's a massage function. My favorite thing is when a
- 9:56Speaker 4: patient sits down, then they go, my chair is moving,
- 9:58Speaker 4: what's going on? And I say, it's just massaging. You
- 10:01Speaker 4: don't worry, and they're like, oh, this is amazing.
- 10:03Speaker 3: I know.
- 10:04Speaker 4: So it is a really cool thing that we just
- 10:06Speaker 4: upgraded my side of the dental office. When it comes
- 10:10Speaker 4: to the operatory chairs, that's the thing that you sit
- 10:13Speaker 4: in people. So it's the most important part of the operation,
- 10:18Speaker 4: is you the patient being comfortable and sitting in something
- 10:22Speaker 4: that is going to make you feel comfortable but also
- 10:24Speaker 4: kind of calm you down a little bit. And the
- 10:28Speaker 4: arm that comes around with all the hand pieces and
- 10:32Speaker 4: the airwater syringe and the suction that's all brand new
- 10:35Speaker 4: as well. And so we no longer have something called cuspidors.
- 10:39Speaker 4: I don't know if you're familiar with cuspodors. No, I'm think, oh,
- 10:42Speaker 4: I'm going to just blow your mind here. So I
- 10:45Speaker 4: had never heard of or seen a cuspador in my life.
- 10:48Speaker 4: So what is a cuspador. It is the little bowl
- 10:50Speaker 4: that sits next to your chair in a dental office.
- 10:54Speaker 4: Growing up, my dentist did not have one. It was
- 10:56Speaker 4: not a very common thing in Texas. Well here in
- 11:00Speaker 4: West Virginia it's a little more common. It's kind of
- 11:02Speaker 4: an older model or an old school thing where whenever
- 11:06Speaker 4: you say, all right, you're you're allowed to, you know,
- 11:08Speaker 4: spit into the bowl, and they go and then they
- 11:10Speaker 4: spit into the bowl. And so I just find I
- 11:13Speaker 4: never really got on too. I always thought it was
- 11:16Speaker 4: kind of a gross thing having a patient spit into
- 11:19Speaker 4: a bowl. Yeah, I don't know. And so what we
- 11:23Speaker 4: what we do is we have suction. We have we
- 11:25Speaker 4: have a slive ejector that we put right inside your
- 11:27Speaker 4: mouth and it just sucks all the slip out or
- 11:30Speaker 4: anything that might be inside your mouth. It's a lot
- 11:32Speaker 4: more hygienic. We don't have to use the word spit.
- 11:35Speaker 3: You know.
- 11:36Speaker 4: There's just some there's there's some really cool things when
- 11:38Speaker 4: it comes to not having a custoblo doors. And so
- 11:40Speaker 4: we no longer have custom doors on my side of
- 11:43Speaker 4: the dental office. And a little quick story about customer doors.
- 11:46Speaker 4: I remember whenever I first moved to West Virginia and
- 11:49Speaker 4: I first learned about custod doors, Doctor Stevens's office does
- 11:53Speaker 4: not have customradors. So my first experience as an associate
- 11:56Speaker 4: dentist was in doctor Stephens's office. For about five years,
- 11:59Speaker 4: we did not have cuspadors, and so I remember one
- 12:02Speaker 4: time a patient I was working on him and he
- 12:05Speaker 4: needed to he needed to have some suction and or
- 12:09Speaker 4: he had something bad tasting in his mouth, and he
- 12:11Speaker 4: ends up going, hey, doctor Henley, can I have some suction?
- 12:14Speaker 4: Or he's like he's kind of murmur. Whenever a patient
- 12:18Speaker 4: starts to remember you know they need suction because they
- 12:20Speaker 4: can't speak. And so as I turned to my left
- 12:23Speaker 4: to grab the suction, I turn back around and I
- 12:27Speaker 4: see the patient is standing up, walked over to the
- 12:30Speaker 4: sink and spit into the sink. And so I guess
- 12:32Speaker 4: this patient was expecting a cuspador, but he thought the
- 12:35Speaker 4: sink that was to the side. So that's that's my
- 12:39Speaker 4: That was one of my introductions to the expectation of
- 12:42Speaker 4: a cuspadore in West Virginia. But we'd no longer had
- 12:45Speaker 4: that in my office unless you're on the hygiene side.
- 12:47Speaker 4: But I'm in the process of buying new chairs for them,
- 12:50Speaker 4: Libby and Megan, they're coming, so don't worry. Your new
- 12:56Speaker 4: chairs will be here hopefully soon, but I need to
- 13:00Speaker 4: get on that a little bit.
- 13:01Speaker 2: And when it comes to any upgrades, I mean, this
- 13:04Speaker 2: is something that I mean from a hygenal standpoint and
- 13:07Speaker 2: from like just like an aesthetic standpoint on top of
- 13:09Speaker 2: everything else. It's it's it's an upgrade. There's there's no question.
- 13:12Speaker 2: But there's all types of things that that that you
- 13:15Speaker 2: do at your office, and Greeen Dental Group does. Patient
- 13:18Speaker 2: focus is always part of the issue, part of the
- 13:21Speaker 2: experience there what you want to focus on making sure
- 13:23Speaker 2: the a patient has a positive engagement.
- 13:26Speaker 4: So true, So when a patient walks in and they
- 13:27Speaker 4: see clutter, if they see marks on the wall or
- 13:32Speaker 4: I mean blood, I mean I I've we we not
- 13:38Speaker 4: that I've never seen that in my office, but I
- 13:41Speaker 4: can't imagine walking to an office and seeing like something,
- 13:45Speaker 4: some unknown substance on the wall. And I've heard horror stories.
- 13:48Speaker 4: And so being clean number one and hygienic, but also
- 13:53Speaker 4: being decluttered, making sure that you don't have just a
- 13:56Speaker 4: bunch of junk on the wall or on the floor
- 13:59Speaker 4: just everywhere.
- 14:00Speaker 3: And so.
- 14:03Speaker 4: I always try to make sure that my staff know
- 14:05Speaker 4: that we need to have all the cabinets clean, make
- 14:07Speaker 4: sure that obviously between patients were wiping everything down to
- 14:10Speaker 4: kill everything, to make sure we don't have any foreign
- 14:13Speaker 4: objects where they shouldn't be, so that we can actually
- 14:16Speaker 4: be compliant with the highest hygienic standards. But it is
- 14:25Speaker 4: true whenever patient walks in, that's like base level. You
- 14:28Speaker 4: don't want to have anything that's gross. But then of
- 14:30Speaker 4: course when they walk in and they see new paint colors,
- 14:33Speaker 4: that they see a brand of kind of grays and
- 14:38Speaker 4: blues that is very common among all six of our offices.
- 14:42Speaker 4: We only have so many paint colors that we can choose.
- 14:45Speaker 4: We actually have an anterior designer that comes in and says,
- 14:49Speaker 4: these are the colors you can pick. Now you can
- 14:51Speaker 4: pick where they are, but you can't really go outside this.
- 14:53Speaker 4: You can't pick a random yellow or a random black,
- 14:56Speaker 4: you know, like it has to be within this shade
- 14:59Speaker 4: gradient that we can so that when a patient walks
- 15:01Speaker 4: in from one office to another, it's familiar. And on
- 15:05Speaker 4: top of that, we are also this is something new
- 15:09Speaker 4: we're doing as well. We're putting, we're doing some painting,
- 15:12Speaker 4: we're doing some new flooring that the ceilings that are
- 15:16Speaker 4: just like these ceilings in this new studio, the ceilings
- 15:20Speaker 4: of my office are it is a drop down ceiling,
- 15:23Speaker 4: but they're white. The white it's painted white, and so
- 15:27Speaker 4: we're gonna paint it kind of dark gray and so
- 15:29Speaker 4: it looks more clean. And so just whenever a patient
- 15:31Speaker 4: walks in, I want them to like stop, look around
- 15:33Speaker 4: and go wow. Obviously this doctor cares about his office.
- 15:38Speaker 4: He wants to invest in it. He wants to make
- 15:40Speaker 4: sure that it's not just hygienic and clean, but it
- 15:42Speaker 4: looks nice and it's again comfortable and calm, and we
- 15:46Speaker 4: don't want people to worry about anything other than just
- 15:51Speaker 4: what we're about to do when it comes to the procedure.
- 15:55Speaker 2: And that really takes a lot of the even if
- 15:58Speaker 2: you don't know, I think if you go in somewhere
- 15:59Speaker 2: where there's the antithesis of that, where things are cluttered,
- 16:02Speaker 2: things maybe not as clean as possible, it may not
- 16:05Speaker 2: be your top of mind, although it may be your
- 16:06Speaker 2: top of mind, but it certainly gets in there. You know,
- 16:09Speaker 2: it worries, you know when there's other things going on,
- 16:12Speaker 2: and it shakes a confidence level.
- 16:13Speaker 3: I think a little bit. You want to see those
- 16:14Speaker 3: things taken care of.
- 16:17Speaker 4: So going to the dentist is not always the most fun,
- 16:20Speaker 4: I will admit it, right, you know, we're not everyone's
- 16:22Speaker 4: favorite place. I'd rather be golfing than going to the dentists,
- 16:24Speaker 4: to be honest, right, But we want to just the
- 16:29Speaker 4: thing we want people to worry about is nothing. But
- 16:31Speaker 4: if there's anything to worry about, it's just what we're
- 16:33Speaker 4: about to be doing. And so that we don't want
- 16:35Speaker 4: them to worry about anything that's on the walls or
- 16:38Speaker 4: any of the clutter or pretty much, if someone is
- 16:42Speaker 4: disorganized outside of their body, how are they going to
- 16:45Speaker 4: be organized inside their mind?
- 16:47Speaker 3: Right?
- 16:47Speaker 4: So, if we have a disorganized office, how are we
- 16:50Speaker 4: going to make sure that the crown that we prep
- 16:53Speaker 4: is going to be properly done? How are we going
- 16:54Speaker 4: to make sure that that denture that we're making for
- 16:57Speaker 4: you is actually the right denture or the right color
- 16:59Speaker 4: or all this stuff. And so we want to make
- 17:02Speaker 4: sure that the organization that we have his aunt is obvious.
- 17:07Speaker 4: I mean it's we have these in my office. We
- 17:09Speaker 4: have these rolling carts from my implants and rolling cart
- 17:13Speaker 4: for my form my root canal set up, and it's
- 17:16Speaker 4: so well organized, like you pull it out and I
- 17:18Speaker 4: know exactly where everything is because if otherwise, I would
- 17:22Speaker 4: lose my mind because I'm so freaky organized like that,
- 17:26Speaker 4: and I want patients to see that. I want patients
- 17:28Speaker 4: to look down and go, wow, this this guy and
- 17:30Speaker 4: this staff. Organization is a very important. Cleanliness is very important.
- 17:34Speaker 4: So it's not just making things new, like we're talking
- 17:37Speaker 4: about new cabinets, new flooring, whatever, but it's just making
- 17:41Speaker 4: sure patients know that it's it's a very important part
- 17:44Speaker 4: of the process of being clean and organized. That's just
- 17:49Speaker 4: bare bones, that's what it's about.

- 18:02Speaker 2: did to get a text message in that this isn't
- 18:05Speaker 2: really about any particular topic that we're on, but it's
- 18:07Speaker 2: something that you and doctor Stephen deal with quite a bit.
- 18:11Speaker 2: It's not a particular problem. Where did it go? Three
- 18:13Speaker 2: zero four nine one five. My husband will not go
- 18:16Speaker 2: to the dentist. He won't discuss it. It's been eight years?
- 18:19Speaker 2: What can I do?
- 18:20Speaker 1: Oh?
- 18:21Speaker 2: No, that is wah, that is a touch. I mean
- 18:25Speaker 2: that's the first question, right, I mean is it?
- 18:27Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 18:28Speaker 4: Yeah, my husband has not been to the dinnist in
- 18:30Speaker 4: eight years? What can I do?
- 18:32Speaker 3: Okay?
- 18:33Speaker 4: So what can you do as the survivor?
- 18:36Speaker 3: No, I'm just kidding.
- 18:37Speaker 4: Oh my way or the highway pal man, honestly, give
- 18:41Speaker 4: me a call. I mean, this has to be almost
- 18:43Speaker 4: like a one on one consultation, like how we can
- 18:45Speaker 4: like set something up right, or how can we do
- 18:49Speaker 4: a surprise party like high surprise. Let's not do that obviously,
- 18:53Speaker 4: but I don't. There has to be some way of
- 18:56Speaker 4: like introducing your husband to to like the idea of
- 19:02Speaker 4: going to the dentist, or like saying like, hey, I
- 19:05Speaker 4: heard this guy in the radio. He sounds decent. He
- 19:07Speaker 4: sounds like a nice guy, or at least I hope
- 19:09Speaker 4: I come across as a nice where.
- 19:10Speaker 3: I find that shows.
- 19:13Speaker 4: And so the idea of like, I guess, just hearing
- 19:17Speaker 4: someone's voice and being calmed by that first, So have
- 19:20Speaker 4: him listen to this, I guess first. See see if
- 19:23Speaker 4: listening to a dentist talk about things that aren't just
- 19:25Speaker 4: about dentistry, you know that might be something that we have.
- 19:29Speaker 2: Years of radio shows that might be one way to
- 19:31Speaker 2: start find one that has like some good cute information
- 19:34Speaker 2: in it or something. All the topics are within the descriptions.
- 19:38Speaker 2: Maybe there's something that we come across that, you know,
- 19:41Speaker 2: I mean, what's his problem? Does he need to go?
- 19:43Speaker 2: Is there a maybe there's an ongoing issue somewhere exactly?
- 19:46Speaker 4: And I actually have patients that come in and say,
- 19:48Speaker 4: I just want to meet you, I just want to
- 19:50Speaker 4: see this is a good fit, and I go, of course,
- 19:51Speaker 4: let's let's do that. And that's all. That's always a
- 19:54Speaker 4: good start. You don't have to start off by saying
- 19:56Speaker 4: all right, open up. You can just say, hey, my
- 19:58Speaker 4: name is doctor Carson Henley. It's a pleasure to meet you.
- 20:01Speaker 4: Welcome to my office. I'm just so honored that you
- 20:04Speaker 4: chose us. How how did you hear about us? Okay, great,

- 20:13Speaker 3: The staff?
- 20:15Speaker 4: Did they greet you? Did they make you feel comfortable?
- 20:17Speaker 4: I usually asked that I want to make sure that
- 20:19Speaker 4: they that my staff, which they always do that my
- 20:23Speaker 4: staff kind of pointing out that they their first goal
- 20:26Speaker 4: is to make you comfortable, and so a lot of patients.
- 20:29Speaker 4: If if you just want to come in do a
- 20:31Speaker 4: quick consult, meet me, or meet doctor Stephen, or meet
- 20:34Speaker 4: any of our doctors. Uh, kind of set that stage.
- 20:36Speaker 4: Give us a call and set that up. We don't
- 20:39Speaker 4: have to talk dentistry. I can talk soccer, I can
- 20:42Speaker 4: talk here. You know, I can do all sorts of things.
- 20:45Speaker 4: So I don't know if I can I truly answered

- 23:18Speaker 2: onto this Tuesday morning, just after a Memorial Day, Doctor
- 23:21Speaker 2: Carson Henley, It's like it's like the right hand without
- 23:25Speaker 2: the left attached, Doctor Steven, I know, it's like the
- 23:29Speaker 2: cutout of his space. Isn't daring at his empty chair
- 23:32Speaker 2: in his nice new permanent studio. Yeah, we're we're back in.
- 23:35Speaker 2: Uh we've been in new studios for the last year
- 23:38Speaker 2: more that you've been listening. But we finally moved a
- 23:41Speaker 2: few pieces around in the Expert studio is now in.
- 23:43Speaker 2: It's a new permanent location, so it's a lot of
- 23:46Speaker 2: room in here.
- 23:46Speaker 4: For the last year, I practically like so so Doctor
- 23:49Speaker 4: Stephn would sit on one end of the table, they
- 23:51Speaker 4: would set on one and then I'd just be in
- 23:53Speaker 4: the middle without a microphone or so. We'd actually share
- 23:57Speaker 4: a mic, which was fine, but I always felt like
- 23:59Speaker 4: I was like the awkward step child. I was just
- 24:02Speaker 4: sitting there. And then also I always had to have
- 24:06Speaker 4: this chair that didn't slip. For some reason, the pants
- 24:09Speaker 4: I wear, I would like slip out of this like
- 24:11Speaker 4: leather chair, and so Doctor Stephen graciously would always sit
- 24:13Speaker 4: in it. But these chairs, I'm not slipping out of
- 24:16Speaker 4: these chairs. These are super nice anyway, So and I'll
- 24:18Speaker 4: have a full setup.
- 24:19Speaker 2: But doctor Steven's not here. Yeah, yeah, we're now. I
- 24:22Speaker 2: was it's a shame too, because yeah, yesterday I was
- 24:25Speaker 2: just thinking. I was like, you guys are are only
- 24:28Speaker 2: every week where we have two guests. There's some other
- 24:31Speaker 2: folks that bring in guests occasionally, but you're the only
- 24:33Speaker 2: folks that we have that are two guests every week.
- 24:35Speaker 2: And so last night, before I got your your text,
- 24:37Speaker 2: I was saying, man, I can't wait till doctor Carson
- 24:39Speaker 2: and doctor and Reeve come in tomorrow.
- 24:41Speaker 3: I finally have two mics to put them in front of.
- 24:43Speaker 3: And then doctor Greeve had to throw it off of them.
- 24:45Speaker 4: Maybe maybe Stephen knew we were gonna have two mics.
- 24:48Speaker 4: He's like, I don't want to be there, doctor. I
- 24:50Speaker 4: prefer to sit on top of each other.
- 24:52Speaker 2: That's much better when we're when we're all crowded in together,
- 24:54Speaker 2: sitting right on top of each other, much better.
- 24:57Speaker 3: Thanks for calling us this morning.
- 24:58Speaker 2: You're welcome to weigh in threes or four three, four
- 25:00Speaker 2: fifty eight threes or four nine, three, five five zeros
- 25:02Speaker 2: or eight. It's a text line number. Give us a call. Well,
- 25:04Speaker 2: doctor Henley, will try to navigate three of your questions. Whatever.
- 25:07Speaker 2: It might be a little difficult if your if your
- 25:10Speaker 2: spouse hasn't been to the dentist in eight years, maybe
- 25:12Speaker 2: you can't answer that one right off the bat, but
- 25:14Speaker 2: we'll try to work our way through that just a
- 25:16Speaker 2: little bit. One of the other things that you mentioned
- 25:18Speaker 2: that you want to talk about a little bit is
- 25:21Speaker 2: a sedation in the office, And that's one of the
- 25:22Speaker 2: things that's kind of interesting. For one thing, if you
- 25:25Speaker 2: guys you take sedation in the office, you do it
- 25:28Speaker 2: for one thing, and do it at levels that aren't
- 25:30Speaker 2: necessarily typical at every dentist office.
- 25:34Speaker 4: So I actually did some digging last week. I looked
- 25:37Speaker 4: into every single license for the state of West Virginia.
- 25:41Speaker 4: Trust me pay for a while for a class three
- 25:45Speaker 4: B and three A license or a sedation permit is
- 25:50Speaker 4: what it's called.
- 25:51Speaker 3: So what is three A.
- 25:52Speaker 4: That is the intro or where you take some some
- 25:56Speaker 4: sedative medication and put it and you can take it
- 25:59Speaker 4: by mouth. That's what doctor Stephen does, which has the
- 26:02Speaker 4: same effect. It's the same level of sedation, but it's
- 26:04Speaker 4: just by an oral route. And my sedation method allows
- 26:08Speaker 4: me to start an IV and actually put drugs through
- 26:11Speaker 4: the print route or through the IV, and so that's
- 26:14Speaker 4: a three B. There's only I believe I counted nine
- 26:18Speaker 4: or ten general dentists in the state that do a
- 26:20Speaker 4: three B or ivy sedation, and none of them are
- 26:23Speaker 4: within an hour. I think the closest one is up
- 26:27Speaker 4: near Clay County or Rhone County, something like that, and
- 26:29Speaker 4: so nothing in Huntington. So it's kind of neat that
- 26:34Speaker 4: I'm providing this service that no one in the valley's providing.
- 26:40Speaker 4: And at the same time, I'm very proud to do
- 26:44Speaker 4: that because if a patient needs a filling and they
- 26:48Speaker 4: need to be sedated, well, oral surgeons can sedate you,
- 26:51Speaker 4: but they don't do fillings right. Or if you need
- 26:53Speaker 4: a cleaning, I have some amazing, lovely hygienists that can
- 26:57Speaker 4: do some that can clean your teeth like crazy. So
- 27:01Speaker 4: if you're so worried or so anxious about just what
- 27:04Speaker 4: I what most would call just a simple procedure, we
- 27:08Speaker 4: can still get you sedated to a comfortable level and
- 27:10Speaker 4: do anything anything that I'm comfortable doing, which is basically everything.
- 27:14Speaker 4: So that's what's so neat, is there?
- 27:17Speaker 2: What's the big difference between and in the dental office,
- 27:20Speaker 2: there is we hear about of a sedation which you
- 27:22Speaker 2: were just talking about. You're talking about doctor Stephen with
- 27:24Speaker 2: oral sedation, and we talked about like nitrous and different
- 27:27Speaker 2: things like that. What's the basic difference between those? Oh,
- 27:30Speaker 2: good question. So sedation is a spectrum. You can go
- 27:35Speaker 2: from zero sedation all the way to general anesthesia, which
- 27:37Speaker 2: is in the hospital setting, and that's where you have
- 27:39Speaker 2: an ant caesiologist and you are out, your body is
- 27:43Speaker 2: paralyzed all the things.
- 27:45Speaker 3: We do not do that in the office.
- 27:47Speaker 4: We technically legally are not putting you to air quote sleep.
- 27:53Speaker 4: It is called conscious sedation. Now at the lower end
- 27:56Speaker 4: of the spectrum, when it comes to a lower, lighter sedation,
- 27:59Speaker 4: we start with nitrous which is a simple compound, a
- 28:03Speaker 4: simple molecule that helps that you breathe in. We put
- 28:08Speaker 4: a little mask over your nose and you breathe it in.
- 28:11Speaker 4: And do we know how on how it works, actually know,
- 28:15Speaker 4: which is kind of weird. Actually there's still research on
- 28:19Speaker 4: going like how does this actually make us sedated? But
- 28:22Speaker 4: we do believe it's on the GABB receptors, which is
- 28:25Speaker 4: the same effect as alcohol, which is a fun fact anyway,
- 28:30Speaker 4: So you breathe in the nitrous and it just makes
- 28:32Speaker 4: you less nervous. You just kind of calm down, and
- 28:37Speaker 4: that's so that's the start, and you're not just breathing nitrous.
- 28:40Speaker 4: We also provide oxygen. And so let's say you're breathing
- 28:43Speaker 4: in fifty percent nitrous, you're also breathing in fifty percent oxygen.
- 28:47Speaker 4: If a if a patient or a patient or a
- 28:51Speaker 4: mother of a patient is worried about breathing in too
- 28:54Speaker 4: much nitrous, always tell them this individual on nitrous is
- 28:58Speaker 4: breathing in more oxygen than we are current. So right
- 29:00Speaker 4: now Dale, you and I breathing in the era. It's
- 29:03Speaker 4: a twenty one percent oxygen and so providing fifty to
- 29:07Speaker 4: fifty nitrous oxygen, that's more oxygen than we're getting. At
- 29:10Speaker 4: the same time, we're also providing nitrous which helps to date.
- 29:14Speaker 4: But it's so it's a very safe thing, and so
- 29:17Speaker 4: that's the lowest level of sedation. However, there's something called
- 29:21Speaker 4: blue gasing, which I don't know why I'm talking about this,
- 29:24Speaker 4: but it's just so cool. If you do one hundred
- 29:26Speaker 4: percent nitrous, obviously you will not survive because you need
- 29:30Speaker 4: to have oxygen, but you can actually sedate someone two
- 29:34Speaker 4: general anesthetic levels, and so just because you're providing nitrous
- 29:39Speaker 4: doesn't mean you can't get to a higher level of sedation.
- 29:41Speaker 4: So there is some caution there. At the same time,
- 29:45Speaker 4: we have some we have failsafe mechanisms and all our
- 29:48Speaker 4: machines where you can't actually you can't lower the oxygen
- 29:52Speaker 4: below three liters of oxygen flow per minute. You also
- 29:57Speaker 4: have something called a scavenger where we actually hook up
- 30:00Speaker 4: the suction to the hood, to the nasal hood, the
- 30:04Speaker 4: nasal kind of piece, so the air in the operatory
- 30:08Speaker 4: does not get filled with nitrous. So that's a safety thing.
- 30:12Speaker 4: And so we have these failsafe mechanisms. It's called to
- 30:15Speaker 4: make sure that we keep people safe. So that's the
- 30:18Speaker 4: lowest level, and I'm sure, doctor Steven, we're here to
- 30:21Speaker 4: be like, why are getting into the weeds?
- 30:22Speaker 1: I just love that.
- 30:23Speaker 4: And so that that's us the lowest level. And then
- 30:25Speaker 4: above that you can do something called an anziolysis. We
- 30:28Speaker 4: actually give them something like a valium of benzodazepene, and
- 30:32Speaker 4: that allows the patient to be sedated about an hour
- 30:35Speaker 4: prior to the appointment and it's it lasts for maybe
- 30:38Speaker 4: a few hours. Uh, and that does require someone to
- 30:42Speaker 4: drive you and drive you home because we don't want
- 30:44Speaker 4: to sedate.
- 30:45Speaker 3: Next question, Okay, yeah, and so that.
- 30:47Speaker 4: That's that's the next level up. And then you can
- 30:49Speaker 4: actually combine the two. You can do nitrous plus the
- 30:51Speaker 4: anziolytic drug, and that's actually very effective. That requires a
- 30:55Speaker 4: Class two permit, which not I think maybe a few
- 30:59Speaker 4: dozen have in the state. And so that's very effective.
- 31:02Speaker 4: And then above that is the oral sedation that doctor
- 31:04Speaker 4: Stephen does and then the ivy sedation from there. And
- 31:06Speaker 4: so what your permit allows you to do is to
- 31:09Speaker 4: sedate to a level. How you get there is up
- 31:12Speaker 4: to you. Pretty much. If I use nitrous, I can
- 31:15Speaker 4: actually get them up to conscious sedation. If I could
- 31:18Speaker 4: with nitrous, it's really hard to do. I can't really
- 31:21Speaker 4: do that with nitrous. But that's really what your permit
- 31:23Speaker 4: allows you to do. It's allows you to sedate to
- 31:26Speaker 4: a level. And so because of that, we are required
- 31:29Speaker 4: to have more higher advanced, higher advanced, more advanced emergency protocols.
- 31:37Speaker 4: My emergency drug kit is exhaustive. I have to I
- 31:43Speaker 4: check it monthly to make sure nothing is expired. There's
- 31:47Speaker 4: so many things that I need to do to make
- 31:49Speaker 4: sure that I can keep patients safe. That that's why
- 31:52Speaker 4: only ten Dennis in the state are actually offering because
- 31:54Speaker 4: it is very difficult to do, but I'm proud to
- 31:57Speaker 4: do it because not everyone can or will do it.
- 32:00Speaker 4: So that's kind of the spectrum from nitrous all the
- 32:02Speaker 4: way up to what we provide, which is conscious sedation.
- 32:06Speaker 2: That's great information and really a lot of information for
- 32:09Speaker 2: you to to kind of work through there. And as
- 32:11Speaker 2: you were talking, kind of I meant that in a
- 32:14Speaker 2: good way because it made me think about our Texter
- 32:17Speaker 2: and her husband who hasn't been to the denist in
- 32:19Speaker 2: eight years. What if his issue is he gets anxious,
- 32:23Speaker 2: what if he's what if what if it's like he's
- 32:25Speaker 2: never been to a dentist before that we could give
- 32:27Speaker 2: him any sort of anesthesia or any sort of of
- 32:31Speaker 2: to help with his anxiety or whatever it might be.
- 32:34Speaker 2: And so is that I don't want to go because
- 32:36Speaker 2: I just get I don't want to be a nervous
- 32:37Speaker 2: right in the chair. Well, this might be one of
- 32:39Speaker 2: those things that helps you overcome that barrier for sure.
- 32:42Speaker 4: And I actually had a patient not too long ago,
- 32:44Speaker 4: who was so nervous about needles that I couldn't sedate
- 32:47Speaker 4: them through the day, right, And so we had to
- 32:51Speaker 4: Each patient is different, and so we cater to each
- 32:54Speaker 4: individual patient. We we get them sedated, or we get
- 32:58Speaker 4: them comfortable. Even without sedation, we get them comfortable. And
- 33:02Speaker 4: a lot of times whenever patients come in for sedation consults,
- 33:06Speaker 4: just by us reassuring them and giving them these options,
- 33:10Speaker 4: and they tend to get calm because they know that
- 33:12Speaker 4: there's options, as opposed to if they walk in and
- 33:16Speaker 4: I go, sorry, we don't have anything for you. Sit down,
- 33:18Speaker 4: we're going to do this now. No, no, we slow down.
- 33:21Speaker 4: We approach it from a very calm perspective. We make
- 33:25Speaker 4: sure that the patient is comfortable and relaxed, and we
- 33:29Speaker 4: make sure that everything that we do is slow and methodical. Now,
- 33:33Speaker 4: of course when we're working we go quick, but we
- 33:36Speaker 4: want to make sure that the patient is reassured that
- 33:38Speaker 4: everything we're doing is purposeful, to make sure that they're
- 33:41Speaker 4: comfortable with what we're doing. So it's not just about
- 33:44Speaker 4: the sedation. I mean truly, about half the patients that
- 33:48Speaker 4: come in for sedation consults, half of them say, actually,
- 33:51Speaker 4: I don't think I need any just because of this
- 33:54Speaker 4: conversation that we've had. I just I've met you. I've
- 33:57Speaker 4: didn't have any expectation of treatment today. Of talking and
- 34:01Speaker 4: just by talking, I think I'm comfortable with you, which
- 34:04Speaker 4: is kind of cool.
- 34:06Speaker 3: That's great.
- 34:06Speaker 2: Yeah, that's great information. Doctor Carson Hiley repping up our
- 34:08Speaker 2: conversation with doctor Carson Henley from Griebdental Group on line
- 34:11Speaker 2: Greebdentalgroup dot com. I wanted to kind of tie all
- 34:13Speaker 2: of these things together. We talked about the person whose
- 34:16Speaker 2: husband hasn't been for eight years. We've talked about maybe
- 34:20Speaker 2: some sort of anesthesia or sedation when you get into
- 34:25Speaker 2: the office might help you overcome those things. But let's
- 34:27Speaker 2: talk just briefly. You only have about two minutes here
- 34:30Speaker 2: or a little less about why it's so important to
- 34:33Speaker 2: get to the dentist and not let these things. If
- 34:35Speaker 2: you have a hygiene problem, not to let it build
- 34:38Speaker 2: because early detection with all, with everything medical, early detection
- 34:41Speaker 2: is key, and that is especially true of things that
- 34:45Speaker 2: are in your mouth, whether it be something that's degrading
- 34:46Speaker 2: or some other problem.
- 34:47Speaker 4: It's part of your holistic health. You got to get
- 34:49Speaker 4: these things looked at. I think that's just a philosophy
- 34:52Speaker 4: for life. If you hear something ticking in your car
- 34:55Speaker 4: and you ignore it, your engine might blow up. Right,
- 34:59Speaker 4: you might just need a simple oil change. Same thing
- 35:01Speaker 4: in the mouth, if you have some sensitivity, it could
- 35:04Speaker 4: be a cusp of a tooth trying to break off.
- 35:07Speaker 4: And so just by adjusting your bite, just by starting
- 35:11Speaker 4: to wear an occlusal guard or a bite guard that
- 35:13Speaker 4: you were at night, or even if you need to
- 35:16Speaker 4: go through orthodontics to move your teeth, there are some
- 35:19Speaker 4: cost or the cost is going to be lower the
- 35:24Speaker 4: earlier you treat it normally, such as a feeling, it's
- 35:27Speaker 4: gonna be less costly than a crown. A crown is
- 35:30Speaker 4: gonna be less costly than an extraction and implant. So
- 35:33Speaker 4: and then if you end up losing all your teeth
- 35:36Speaker 4: and going to a denture, there's a cost to that.
- 35:38Speaker 4: And so there are all these I just kind of
- 35:41Speaker 4: want to kind of zoom out and say, just go
- 35:44Speaker 4: to your dentist, get that every six month exam. Make
- 35:47Speaker 4: sure that nothing is missing, make sure that everything is counted,
- 35:52Speaker 4: make sure that you do your oral cancer screening. Make
- 35:54Speaker 4: sure we're not that if there is anything happening that
- 35:57Speaker 4: would catch it early, and so early early prevention is
- 36:01Speaker 4: so much easier to treat, but also less costly. It
- 36:05Speaker 4: is so much cheaper to prevent than it is to treat.
- 36:09Speaker 4: And then it is cheaper to treat small than is
- 36:11Speaker 4: to treat big. And so come in early. Let us
- 36:14Speaker 4: take a look, make sure that everything is is honky dory.
- 36:18Speaker 4: As I like to say, great information is always in sage.
