- Lucas: Hey Luna, welcome back to Learn French with Fexingo! Episode 40 already — can you believe it? Luna: I know! I feel like we've learned so much. Last episode all about school supplies, right? Stylo, cahier, livre... I've been practicing! Lucas: That's great. Today we're stepping out of the classroom and into the streets. We're going to learn how to ask for and give directions in French. Luna: Oh, that's perfect! I always get lost when I travel. So, what's the first phrase? Lucas: First, you need to know how to ask 'Where is...?' The phrase is: Où est... Listen carefully: Où est. Luna: Où est. Lucas: Exactly. Où est. You can use it with a place. For example, Où est la gare? — Where is the train station. Luna: Où est la gare? That's from episode 27, right? We learned 'la gare'. Lucas: Good memory! So Où est la gare? Let's say it together. Où est la gare? Luna: Où est la gare? Lucas: Perfect. Now let's learn some answers. If someone tells you to turn right, they say: tournez à droite. Luna: Tournez à droite. That sounds a bit formal. Lucas: It is the polite form. You'll hear it often. Repeat: tournez à droite. Luna: Tournez à droite. Lucas: And for left: tournez à gauche. Luna: Tournez à gauche. So right is droite, left is gauche. Lucas: Yes. Now imagine you're walking straight. The phrase is: c'est tout droit. Luna: C'est tout droit. 'It's straight ahead'. I like that one. Lucas: Let's practice a mini-scenario. Luna, you ask me where the station is. Luna: Où est la gare? Lucas: I answer: Tournez à droite, puis c'est tout droit. Luna: Okay, so turn right, then straight ahead. Got it. Lucas: Now let's add one more useful phrase: près d'ici — meaning 'near here'. For example, 'la pharmacie est près d'ici' — the pharmacy is near here. Luna: Près d'ici. So if someone asks Où est la pharmacie? I can say C'est près d'ici! Lucas: Exactly! Let's review all five phrases: Où est, tournez à droite, tournez à gauche, c'est tout droit, près d'ici. Luna: Ooh, let me try them all. Où est... tournez à droite... tournez à gauche... c'est tout droit... près d'ici. Lucas: You did it! Now let's put them in a conversation. Imagine you're lost and ask me: Où est le restaurant? Luna: Où est le restaurant? Lucas: I say: Tournez à gauche, puis c'est tout droit. Le restaurant est près d'ici. Luna: So turn left, then straight ahead, and it's near here. That's so useful! Lucas: Yeah, you're all set to explore a French town. Before we wrap, let's do a quick drill. I'll say the English, you say the French. Luna: Bring it on! Lucas: Where is? Luna: Où est. Lucas: Turn right. Luna: Tournez à droite. Lucas: Turn left. Luna: Tournez à gauche. Lucas: Straight ahead. Luna: C'est tout droit. Lucas: Near here. Luna: Près d'ici. Lucas: Amazing. You're ready to navigate. Keep these phrases in mind, and practice them when you're out walking. Thanks for joining me on Fexingo, Luna. Luna: Thanks Lucas! I'll be using these every day. See you next time! Lucas: See you! And remember, practice makes progress. À bientôt!
