- 0:02SPEAKER_01: Hey guys, welcome back to another episode of Skin Anarchy.
- 0:05SPEAKER_01: I'm your host Ecta and today's brand that I'm gonna introduce you to is so cool because I'm always looking for brow options.
- 0:13SPEAKER_01: I don't know if you guys are like me, but I'm very, very selective with anything I put on my brows because it's either too sticky or it just doesn't do anything for me.
- 0:22SPEAKER_01: So it's very rare when I find something I truly, truly love.
- 0:25SPEAKER_01: So without further ado, I want to introduce you guys to the founder and CEO of Genius to Beauty, Allison Hogue.
- 0:32SPEAKER_01: Welcome to the show, Allison.
- 0:33SPEAKER_01: I'm so excited to talk to you.
- 0:35SPEAKER_00: Thank you.
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: Thanks for having me on.
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I appreciate it.
- 0:39SPEAKER_01: I'm so excited to pick your brain.
- 0:41SPEAKER_01: I I literally never get to talk to anybody that knows so much about brows, and you have so much experience.
- 0:47SPEAKER_01: I'd love to start there if you could tell us like just your background, because I know you've done so much work in this space and been in the beauty industry for so many years.
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so so you know it's it's interesting.
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: I'm a makeup artist first.
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: It's actually kind of funny.
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: I got kicked out of my third grade class in elementary school for making over my class.
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: I stole my mother's makeup uh and uh hoarded it under my bed and found the perfect opportunity to make over my class.
- 1:12SPEAKER_00: So I've been beauty obsessed, but at the same time was also uh an athlete.
- 1:17SPEAKER_00: And so, you know, it was interesting, this push-pull about getting to wear makeup and getting to explore it and thinking beauty is like the coolest thing that gets wear glitter on your eye, like amazing.
- 1:28SPEAKER_00: And I, you know, came of age in the 80s, and how I even have my whole career is that I worked, I actually modeled in high school, and my agent took one look at my brows and said, Don't you touch their brows, they're never gonna grow back.
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: And I took that to heart.
- 1:43SPEAKER_00: So as I became a makeup artist, and you know, I started off behind the counter, I, you know, made my way into the salon world, and I, you know, started hearing the stories of my sister laid me down on a bed and plugged my brows out and they never grew back, right?
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: And I've heard every horror story, the onset of the 90s and people getting their skin pulled off, right?
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: Like I saw it all and I was like, do not touch your brows.
- 2:09SPEAKER_00: And you know, I ended up going and working with a mentor who he I was apprenticing with him for makeup, you know, to refine my skills to be able to work on set and do commercial work.
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: And, you know, this was pre any kind of digital enhancement.
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: And he took one look at my brows and said, We're gonna do your brows.
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: And I said, Oh, you're not touching my brows.
- 2:32SPEAKER_00: And he said, We're gonna cut them.
- 2:34SPEAKER_00: And he showed me the proper shape of the brows, and all of a sudden I could no longer do anybody's makeup without doing the brows.
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: That's how it started.
- 2:43SPEAKER_00: And and uh yeah, yeah, that's how the whole thing started.
- 2:47SPEAKER_00: And I went back into the salon and I started doing people's makeup.
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: I was like, oh, there's no way I can do your makeup without your brows.
- 2:53SPEAKER_00: And some of those clients are still with me today, 30 years later, which is just really insane to me to think that I've been doing brows for 30 years, but um, it's it's true.
- 3:04SPEAKER_00: And once that started, you know, I became very particular about, you know, brow artistry is something that, you know, we're not laying somebody down on a bed, you know, and I appreciate waxing, right?
- 3:16SPEAKER_00: I mean, I appreciate I appreciate it, but it's so different to sit somebody up and actually sculpt in their shape to their face and to their eyes.
- 3:27SPEAKER_00: And that's you know, my method, that's the balanced brow method.
- 3:30SPEAKER_00: And then I started seeing how people can grow their brows and the condition of the brows and the health of the brows, and like, you know, the goal is to have your brows be perfect without any makeup, right?
- 3:41SPEAKER_00: That's exactly exactly.
- 3:44SPEAKER_01: No, I love what you're saying.
- 3:46SPEAKER_01: Honestly, it's so refreshing to hear because I mean, just to I I want to tell you my little own personal journey with brows.
- 3:52SPEAKER_01: I please, please.
- 3:54SPEAKER_01: Honestly, brows for me were such a pain point my whole life because nobody did anything but waxing.
- 4:02SPEAKER_01: Exactly what you said.
- 4:03SPEAKER_01: Like, I literally would refuse, like, my girlfriends would be like, Yeah, let's go get our um, you know, brows waxed.
- 4:08SPEAKER_01: And I was like, I want to pass on that part because either they round them, like I look like I belong in the 20s, or like they just don't know what to do with my brows because I have like a lot of eyebrow hair and I always have.
- 4:20SPEAKER_01: So it's like exactly what you said.
- 4:22SPEAKER_01: Like they need to be shaped and they need to be trimmed right.
- 4:25SPEAKER_01: And like I remember having one girlfriend in college, and I would go to her dorm room, and she was the only one that could do my brows.
- 4:32SPEAKER_01: And I kid you not, if she was not available, like even like long after we graduated, like I stayed um, I stayed close to her.
- 4:40SPEAKER_01: And even after I graduated, I'd be like, Hey, can you um uh fit me into your calendar?
- 4:45SPEAKER_01: I will pay you good money to do my eyebrows because no one knew what to do.
- 4:50SPEAKER_01: And to this day, I'm just like, I refuse to get an eyebrow wax because I know what's gonna happen.
- 4:55SPEAKER_00: It's gonna be terrible.
- 4:56SPEAKER_00: So yeah.
- 4:57SPEAKER_00: And and you know, it scars.
- 4:59SPEAKER_00: This is the thing is that, you know, now that we've gotten these incredible cell phones, as I started taking before and after pictures, what I started realizing was that there's scarring underneath the brow hair.
- 5:11SPEAKER_00: And that's one of the reasons why I really believe that the brow hair doesn't grow back after people are waxed, because you think about it, you're putting, you know, back in the 90s too, nobody had any control on those wax pots.
- 5:22SPEAKER_00: They were hot, they were burning people's skin.
- 5:25SPEAKER_00: And I watched my own mother get burned on like she still has a brow guard today, 30 years later.
- 5:31SPEAKER_00: Um, and I would look at that and I'd be like, absolutely not, you know, absolutely not.
- 5:36SPEAKER_00: And I just I will not.
- 5:43SPEAKER_01: No, yeah.
- 5:44SPEAKER_00: No, and and then there's the actual shaping of it, you know, where the everybody right now has a philosophy about how to shape the brow.
- 5:53SPEAKER_00: And and I it upsets me greatly, you know, because how that brow is arched.
- 5:59SPEAKER_00: I mean, for for 20 years, the actual state board book had the arch points put in completely wrong.
- 6:06SPEAKER_00: And it was that's why people end up looking like they're surprised.
- 6:11SPEAKER_01: No, is that like is that true?
- 6:13SPEAKER_01: Like some of these rules, we think that's a good thing you brought up because you know how we hear about like take a pencil and put it to the like the end of your nose, and like is that true, all of that?
- 6:23SPEAKER_00: Like that, yeah.
- 6:24SPEAKER_00: So so again, everybody like right now, the microblading people, you know, are don't get me started on it.
- 6:31SPEAKER_00: They have this Fibonacci code, the brow code, and they're putting the brow, they're starting the brow basically in the middle, way past where the arch intersects, right?
- 6:44SPEAKER_00: Like way past where the inner corner is, and they're going in.
- 6:48SPEAKER_00: And I'm sorry, you look like an angry brow.
- 6:50SPEAKER_00: Like your brows are your expression, right?
- 6:54SPEAKER_00: You're creating a tiny effect with the shape, like you're gonna look surprised, right?
- 6:59SPEAKER_00: If you flatten out that arch, you'll look like Spock, right?
- 7:03SPEAKER_00: Men have flatter expressions, their brows are usually not naturally arched, right?
- 7:09SPEAKER_00: We have usually naturally arched brows, and usually our shape is perfect.
- 7:15SPEAKER_00: We just need a little guidance, and somehow it got to be really messed up, like with the way that people and you know, I when I looked at the board, I I got the opportunity to teach in an aesthetic school, and I was going through the you know how what I was supposed to be teaching for brows.
- 7:31SPEAKER_00: And when I actually lined up those angles, I looked at the students, I said, You're gonna need to know this for the test.
- 7:36SPEAKER_00: I said, However, don't do this.
- 7:40SPEAKER_00: That was hilarious.
- 7:42SPEAKER_00: Don't do this, you know, because like if you mark those places where they tell you to do the shape and you just draw it in, you can see it's not right.
- 7:52SPEAKER_00: Like we look at people, and this is a really interesting part of the journey after the creating genuist is really coming to the realization that many people don't understand the power and the impact of a person's eyebrows.
- 8:08SPEAKER_00: Like I have been really generally shocked.
- 8:11SPEAKER_00: You know, I took it for granted that you like everybody knew the importance of brows, you know, because in being in this world, people come to me because they know their brows need to be fixed, right?
- 8:20SPEAKER_00: That's all I've been doing, is fixing brows for for 30 years.
- 8:24SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 8:24SPEAKER_00: And so when you're coming into my studio, you know, I'm booked solid for you know 20 years now.
- 8:30SPEAKER_00: I'm not even taking any more new clients.
- 8:32SPEAKER_00: You know, I look at this and I'm like, of course, everybody understands the importance of brows.
- 8:37SPEAKER_00: No, they do not.
- 8:38SPEAKER_00: They do not understand.
- 8:40SPEAKER_01: And so no, I I believe you.
- 8:43SPEAKER_01: I believe you because you know, here's the thing like it really hit home when you were like, it's literally framing your face.
- 8:49SPEAKER_01: And I completely agree with you.
- 8:51SPEAKER_01: For me personally, like, I don't do a lot of makeup, so I don't wear heavy makeup at all.
- 8:55SPEAKER_01: But when I do put on makeup, the first thing I look at is my eyebrows because that's gonna change everything.
- 9:02SPEAKER_01: You know, how I do my eye makeup, if I'm using liner or not, how I'm doing my eyeliner, like everything goes with your eyebrows.
- 9:09SPEAKER_01: And people, I think for a long time, I mean, uh, we had spoken briefly about the 90s, everybody was just taking brows for granted for such a long time.
- 9:18SPEAKER_01: Like, oh, it's just something you do at the end of your makeup routine.
- 9:21SPEAKER_01: No, I feel like the very first thing you get down, like have that solidified, you know what I mean?
- 9:27SPEAKER_01: So, like sometimes it can help you, I think sometimes with having excessive products on your face that you don't need, you know, if you just have really nice brows the way you like them, like you can frame your whole look around that, you know.
- 9:41SPEAKER_00: So I just really believe that our natural brows, you know, are what we need to cultivate, you know, that's that, and also the way that brows grow, this is something that that again, people don't understand.
- 9:55SPEAKER_00: And, you know, I have this whole philosophy that's called mow it to grow it.
- 9:58SPEAKER_00: I don't know if you've got to see a little bit about this philosophy because up until we started getting brow enhancement serums, you know, what did somebody do if their brows were massacred?
- 10:10SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 10:10SPEAKER_00: And, you know, and I started learning and seeing how the natural brow patterns were on the face, and the brows grow like a lawn.
- 10:21SPEAKER_00: So if you actually don't do your brows, what happens if you don't mow a lawn?
- 10:25SPEAKER_00: It doesn't look fantastic, it shrivels up, looks like crabgrass, turns brown, right?
- 10:30SPEAKER_00: And you grow.
- 10:32SPEAKER_00: That's what brows do.
- 10:34SPEAKER_00: So, you know, when I realized that in order to have a healthy brow, they needed to be on a cycle, otherwise, the actual hair started to get finer.
- 10:43SPEAKER_00: And so people who don't do their brows, the brows end up looking really messy and getting them on a cycle and only tweezing like a few.
- 10:53SPEAKER_00: Like, I'm not talking about going in and doing a like shaping out your brows and just giving them a clean, but it's on a five-week cycle, right?
- 11:01SPEAKER_00: If you go longer than eight weeks, the brows stop growing, period.
- 11:05SPEAKER_01: Wow.
- 11:06SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 11:06SPEAKER_01: Well, I didn't know that because I honestly like it's it's crazy because my eyebrows, like and I said, you know, before, like I have pretty, I guess you could say healthy growth in my eyebrow area.
- 11:17SPEAKER_01: So um, you know, with me though, I even noticed what you're saying is like after a while they will just stop growing.
- 11:23SPEAKER_01: Like they're not gonna like just keep going endlessly and endlessly.
- 11:26SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 11:26SPEAKER_00: It's otherwise we'd be braiding our eyebrows, right?
- 11:29unknown: Yeah, exactly.
- 11:31SPEAKER_00: New trend right there.
- 11:33SPEAKER_00: Spray those eyebrows.
- 11:34SPEAKER_01: That's gonna happen.
- 11:35SPEAKER_01: See, you know, you put it out into the universe, we're gonna see it on TikTok tomorrow.
- 11:38SPEAKER_01: Like, I'm convinced.
- 11:40SPEAKER_00: Oh, somebody's gonna take a brow wig and turn it into a French braid and stick it on.
- 11:44SPEAKER_00: You know that.
- 11:46SPEAKER_01: I would not be surprised that today I I see trends now that I just think to myself, I'm like, do you guys really do this and go out into the world?
- 11:54SPEAKER_01: Like, and no one says anything to you.
- 11:56SPEAKER_01: I see so many people doing things like that.
- 11:58SPEAKER_01: But I mean, total side note, but I want to actually uh address one thing, and and that's the fact that, you know, I love that you have a product line.
- 12:07SPEAKER_01: I love it because the thing is, it wasn't just a struggle to get like a person that could do your eyebrows, right?
- 12:13SPEAKER_01: Like growing up for me, that wasn't only the only problem.
- 12:16SPEAKER_01: It was also like when I finally realized, hey, what if I tried to like take a stab at this, you know, a little bit myself in terms of just mild stuff, you know, when it came to like taking care of them or like even trimming, like I couldn't find products anywhere.
- 12:31SPEAKER_01: Like I literally had searching.
- 12:34SPEAKER_00: I mean, and and everybody's still doing the same thing right now.
- 12:37SPEAKER_00: I looked at what's winning for awards right now.
- 12:39SPEAKER_00: That's why I'm so appreciative of the award that you gave me because I looked at the lack of innovation inside of the brow care category, and I'm like, what now that I'm on the product development journey, right?
- 12:50SPEAKER_00: And I see what's out there, I'm like, you're kidding me.
- 12:53SPEAKER_00: Like that primer that I worked on, I worked on that formula for two years, right?
- 12:57SPEAKER_00: Because I was like, we're gonna get this, we're gonna get this right.
- 13:01SPEAKER_00: And the lack of ingenuity and the lack of caring for the brow is its own feature, which is the most important feature.
- 13:08SPEAKER_00: Like you said, like if you don't wear any makeup, your brows are the thing that carries your expression.
- 13:14SPEAKER_00: It is, it is the thing that balances you, and it's also, you know, when you fill them in when you're doing makeup, you know, I teach in makeup terms level one, level two, level three.
- 13:24SPEAKER_00: And you're level one, your brows should be perfect without having to do any makeup, and they should balance your features.
- 13:29SPEAKER_00: And level two is where you get into balancing because if you put more makeup on your face, then you have to balance out with the brow, right?
- 13:38SPEAKER_00: And that, you know, getting them perfect, you know, and conditioning them.
- 13:43SPEAKER_00: The conditioners, you know, were something that all of a sudden I was like, why aren't we caring for our brow hair the way that we care for the hair on our head?
- 13:54SPEAKER_01: Yes, yeah, exactly.
- 13:57SPEAKER_01: That's so real.
- 14:03SPEAKER_00: And people go to great lengths to buy all these products to fill in their brows when if you just did a little bit of care, they'd be freaking perfect.
- 14:13SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 14:13SPEAKER_00: Stop taxing.
- 14:15SPEAKER_01: No, I know, I completely agree.
- 14:17SPEAKER_01: And I think it's like it's I see that happening a lot in beauty where people are kind of waking up now and they're like, wait a minute, like beauty applies to like my whole body.
- 14:26SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 14:26SPEAKER_01: Like, there are so many things that people are not have not been addressing.
- 14:30SPEAKER_01: And with brows, it's kind of like, I don't know, it's it to me, it's obvious.
- 14:34SPEAKER_01: I think anyone who grew up with like, I guess, fuller brows would understand a little bit also, you know, the journey of like just trying to just, I guess, tame them for lack of a better word, you know, in the right way and making sure that they look good because there was literal, genuinely nothing out there.
- 14:49SPEAKER_01: There was nothing.
- 14:50SPEAKER_01: And and when you tried, I was always scared.
- 14:53SPEAKER_01: I mean, I don't know about anybody else, but I was always scared to even trim them because I was like, oh God, I'm gonna make this look terrible.
- 14:59SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna be stuck in that 90s brow thing, you know, where it's like literally nothing is on my face.
- 15:05SPEAKER_01: And I was scared.
- 15:06SPEAKER_01: So there's a lot of fear as well, you know.
- 15:08SPEAKER_01: And it's so for me as a consumer, I I think of this on a like on different levels because it's not just the lack of accessibility to great products, which by the way, your whole line is phenomenal.
- 15:19SPEAKER_01: I just want to say that point blank.
- 15:21SPEAKER_01: Like it's it's amazing.
- 15:22SPEAKER_01: Like I literally use the revival brow this morning, you know.
- 15:25SPEAKER_01: So like I use it very differently.
- 15:27SPEAKER_01: Um, but I mean, more so not just accessibility, it's also, you know, how to how to do it, like the education component, you know, that was never there either.
- 15:37SPEAKER_01: So it's almost like we're playing catch up with this idea that I need to understand, you know, why like what can I do?
- 15:45SPEAKER_01: What is preventative care?
- 15:47SPEAKER_01: What is what do I do to make sure that in the future my brows are not going to like, you know, like have like the ends missing or something?
- 15:54SPEAKER_01: Because I know a lot of with age, people's the ends of your eyebrows will start like thinning, you know.
- 15:59SPEAKER_01: So that's a big thing.
- 16:01SPEAKER_00: Like I so yeah, it's very interesting to me this whole conversation.
- 16:04SPEAKER_00: So the education piece, like that's the part that I'm working on hardcore right now.
- 16:08SPEAKER_00: You know, I'm saying catch up, like I'm actually sitting here in front of, I just started filming a little bit because it's national crowd in tomorrow.
- 16:15SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah.
- 16:16SPEAKER_00: So so you know, I'm doing a whole bunch of education and trying to get eyes on the brand.
- 16:21SPEAKER_00: You know, I've been dubbed in Atlanta the brow protector for a really long time, you know.
- 16:26SPEAKER_00: Like that's what I'm known for is the brow guru and the protector of eyebrows.
- 16:31SPEAKER_00: Because again, no, nobody understands, you know, one, that you've got to keep your brows on a cycle and what's gonna keep them from thinning on the end is these brow enhancement serums, like our roller brow.
- 16:43SPEAKER_00: Okay, so let's talk about the rollerbrow, um, the sear with the serum, because this was a huge aha moment for me.
- 16:51SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, again, people come to me when their brows are really damaged and they haven't been able to get it to grow.
- 16:57SPEAKER_00: And I put everybody in a rehab, which is, you know, you don't go any longer in my world than six weeks without doing your brows.
- 17:04SPEAKER_00: Five weeks is really optimal, but six is like maximal.
- 17:08SPEAKER_00: After eight, they stop growing.
- 17:10SPEAKER_00: And I had this woman come to me who had the most damaged brows I ever seen.
- 17:15SPEAKER_00: Somebody waxed her into a check mark on her brows, and they like a check mark, like honest to God, she had six first brows like yours, and they laid down that wax.
- 17:27SPEAKER_00: Like, there's a healthy reason why you didn't do your brows, right?
- 17:29SPEAKER_00: Why you didn't wax your brows in one way, me too.
- 17:32SPEAKER_00: Like nobody's ever waxed my brows.
- 17:34SPEAKER_00: And you know, watching that check mark, and I said to her, I have no idea if it's gonna grow back.
- 17:40SPEAKER_00: And then, you know, we started monitoring her growth.
- 17:43SPEAKER_00: I grew back in so much of her hair, and then there's this, you know, as we got the cell phones, I started seeing this damage.
- 17:51SPEAKER_00: And she came in about five years ago, and again, we got amazing growth from using the enhancement serums.
- 17:57SPEAKER_00: We got amazing growth from getting her just on the cycle.
- 18:00SPEAKER_00: I mean, it was still, you know, eight, 90%, 100% better than it was.
- 18:05SPEAKER_00: It just wasn't fully, fully, fully grown.
- 18:08SPEAKER_00: And then one month she comes in, and all of a sudden, like, she has growth from one end of her face, one end of the brow to the other.
- 18:14SPEAKER_00: And I said, What have you been doing?
- 18:16SPEAKER_00: I mean, this is like my she's my she is my subject.
- 18:19SPEAKER_00: Like, she is the person who I'm like, what are you doing with your brows?
- 18:23SPEAKER_00: And she said, Well, I decided to use uh a derma roller on my eyebrows.
- 18:30SPEAKER_00: And I was like, excuse me.
- 18:32SPEAKER_00: She goes, you know, I was told that it helps serums.
- 18:36SPEAKER_00: And so I said, Why the hell not?
- 18:38SPEAKER_00: Let's use a let's use a germ roller.
- 18:41SPEAKER_00: And I was like, All right, well, I'm documenting this germ.
- 18:45SPEAKER_00: And so I knew that when I started working on the serums, oh, we have to talk about something else, Acta, as I'm talking about these serums, because this is for my people with big brows, okay?
- 18:56SPEAKER_00: So I started carrying brows, and we're gonna come, I'm gonna weave Andre's story in here.
- 19:01SPEAKER_00: So I haven't stopped Andre's story, but this is for us, and this is for big big people with big brows, okay?
- 19:07SPEAKER_00: Like with the concern about them getting thinner as we get older, okay?
- 19:11SPEAKER_00: So, so I've been using serums inside my studio.
- 19:15SPEAKER_00: We tested them all out when they first came.
- 19:18SPEAKER_00: I'm always testing on clients.
- 19:19SPEAKER_00: I see about 375 clients a month, just me personally, and I have 3,000 clients total on my roster.
- 19:26SPEAKER_00: So just you know, and I've been doing this for 30 years.
- 19:29SPEAKER_00: So getting these people in and documenting these results are what I've been doing for the past, you know, since we've had cell phones, right?
- 19:36SPEAKER_00: I mean, I just document every single brow that I that comes and sits in my chair.
- 19:40SPEAKER_00: So, so anyway, during COVID, all right, I'm shutting everything down.
- 19:46SPEAKER_00: I'm about to go home and quarantine, and I'm picking everything up, and all of a sudden I look at the serum that we were selling at the time of the studio, and I said, you know what?
- 19:55SPEAKER_00: I've never had a personal experience of using a serum.
- 19:59SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I have full brows, I've never been waxed.
- 20:02SPEAKER_00: Why would I use a serum, right?
- 20:03SPEAKER_00: Like, same thing for you.
- 20:04SPEAKER_00: Like, why would I?
- 20:05SPEAKER_00: I am afraid my brows are gonna grow down in my nose, right?
- 20:09SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 20:09SPEAKER_00: So so I go home, it's quarantine, and I'm like, you know what, they're gonna grow to my nose.
- 20:14SPEAKER_00: Let's have it happen here because nobody's gonna be looking at me for a minute.
- 20:18SPEAKER_00: So I start using serum.
- 20:20SPEAKER_00: And all of a sudden, what I started noticing is all of the shortness and the unevenness of my length, the health of the brow, all of a sudden they started growing in the most beautiful pattern and the most beautiful, natural, like it did when I was a kid, all back into full freaking bloom.
- 20:38SPEAKER_00: I gotta tell you, I was like, oh my god.
- 20:42SPEAKER_00: And so that's when I was like, all right, I need to study up on this, on the on the on the actual actives.
- 20:49SPEAKER_00: Like I hadn't really, I was just like, okay, well, this is the one everybody's using, and we've got good results, but you know, fine, work for some people, it doesn't work for some, right?
- 20:58SPEAKER_00: But so I started experimenting, and the ingredient, active ingredient that in also different actives and different brow products aren't created equal.
- 21:09SPEAKER_00: Like some like latisse was the first thing that everybody started using.
- 21:13SPEAKER_00: It makes fuzz on the brow, it doesn't irritates the skin, it doesn't actually make the brow hair grow, right?
- 21:19SPEAKER_00: You think like, oh, what using on lashes, you just use on your brow.
- 21:22SPEAKER_00: Absolutely not, and it doesn't work the opposite either.
- 21:25SPEAKER_00: So when I started using my active, which has capixel in it, I was like, because we know the peptides will strengthen the hair, like, no question, that there's peptides in everything, right?
- 21:36SPEAKER_00: We know that works, but the active capixel, what it did for brows was unbelievable.
- 21:43SPEAKER_00: So I was just gonna sell, right, the dermal roller separate from the serum, right?
- 21:50SPEAKER_00: Once I got my serum down, I was like, oh my god, this is like when I started testing, I was like, This is this is nuts.
- 21:57SPEAKER_00: And it was on myself.
- 21:58SPEAKER_00: I mean, if I'm sending pictures.
- 22:00SPEAKER_00: Of what my brows look like before I started using.
- 22:02SPEAKER_00: And I already had good brows.
- 22:04SPEAKER_00: Like I, you know, clearly I the brow girl were right.
- 22:07SPEAKER_00: And I couldn't believe I just I still look at my brow.
- 22:10SPEAKER_00: I just did my brows today.
- 22:12SPEAKER_00: And um, I I'm looking at them and I'm just like, I still can't believe they're my brows.
- 22:16SPEAKER_01: Well, the before and afters on this product are phenomenal.
- 22:19SPEAKER_01: Like, by the way, it's crazy.
- 22:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah, like it's insane.
- 22:23SPEAKER_01: Like the first one is just like out of this world.
- 22:25SPEAKER_01: If anyone's curious, if you go to genuousbeauty.com and you go to this product with the the drummer roller.
- 22:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah, the drummer roller on top, like you'll see the first picture after the product picture.
- 22:36SPEAKER_01: I mean, it's insane, like it's night and day difference, literally.
- 22:39SPEAKER_01: So, yeah, it's that's crazy.
- 22:41SPEAKER_01: You have products though that have great ingredients.
- 22:43SPEAKER_01: I was gonna say, you know what I mean?
- 22:45SPEAKER_01: Because we even when I look at we were talking about, you know, the revival brow, which is like one of my favorite ones in the line.
- 22:52SPEAKER_01: I mean, if you look at what you've included, it makes sense that you understand that we're dealing with hair, but also skin.
- 22:58SPEAKER_01: Like it's important to understand that, you know, with eyebrows.
- 23:02SPEAKER_01: I mean, you made that point so clear earlier, and I love that you brought this up in the very beginning.
- 23:07SPEAKER_01: Was this idea of like, are we scarring the tissue under our brows when we get waxed?
- 23:12SPEAKER_01: Because for the longest time, I don't know about anybody else, but whenever I did get a wax a few times, the redness was so insane to me.
- 23:21SPEAKER_01: Like, I could not understand.
- 23:23SPEAKER_01: I was like, there's no beauty, I will not do this.
- 23:26SPEAKER_01: Like, I don't care if you know, pain is beauty.
- 23:29SPEAKER_01: I don't care.
- 23:30SPEAKER_01: Like, you know what I mean?
- 23:31SPEAKER_01: Like, I it's no, you know, I'm not gonna put up with my brows looking like I just, I don't know, like spread like chili peppers all over them or something.
- 23:41SPEAKER_01: Like it was insane.
- 23:42SPEAKER_01: So, I mean, for me, when I look at products now, like with that, I guess, more refined lens of now we're in 2024, we have products.
- 23:51SPEAKER_01: Even then, I look at your this this product, for example, the revival product, and I the ceramides, you know, and the nourishing ingredients you have in here make sense to me from the skin perspective as well, which is the bottom line.
- 24:03SPEAKER_01: I mean, if your skin is not healthy, you're not gonna grow hair from that area, you know what I mean?
- 24:08SPEAKER_01: Like it's just not gonna happen.
- 24:09SPEAKER_01: And so, I mean, I think that's brilliant that you actually did put that time in to understand like skin health as well as well as hair health, you know, when you're crafting these products.
- 24:19SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 24:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 24:20SPEAKER_00: I mean, it is it is to strengthen the hair and nourish the skin, right?
- 24:25SPEAKER_00: And then the derma roller, the onset of that derma roller, which acts like, you know, if my we keep my lawn analogy right, it acts like an aerator for the lawn.
- 24:36SPEAKER_00: And then the serum is your fertilizer, right?
- 24:39SPEAKER_00: And then the conditioners are your nourishers.
- 24:43SPEAKER_00: And I gotta tell you, I the conditioning of the brows.
- 24:47SPEAKER_00: So fun fact if you use your brow renewal, the pink stuff, where use it every single night.
- 24:54SPEAKER_00: My clients, the coarsest, you know, I have a lot of women who are over 60, and that brow hair starts to get really coarse, and we call it, you know, you start getting old man brows, like so like over my mother, you know, is really my she was the one who really I was like, oh hell no, my brow guru of Atlanta cannot have her mother cannot have old man brows.
- 25:17SPEAKER_00: Like that is not happening.
- 25:19SPEAKER_00: And you know, to watch the that her brows now at 81 lay down because she's been using that brow renewal at night.
- 25:28SPEAKER_00: And the clients, our clients came in and were like, we're just sleeping in it.
- 25:31SPEAKER_00: And I was like, okay, we're not making it a mask, we're making it a night treatment.
- 25:35SPEAKER_00: And now personally, I can't go without using that pink stuff every single night.
- 25:39SPEAKER_00: Like, if I forget, I pop my butt out of bed and I run back into the bathroom and I'm like, oh hell no.
- 25:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no, I don't believe you.
- 25:48SPEAKER_01: It's so it's also like so like self-care, like to the max.
- 25:52SPEAKER_01: Like, I feel like it's so nice to just do your little routine for your brows at night.
- 25:56SPEAKER_01: Like, it's just really therapeutic, too.
- 25:58SPEAKER_01: I mean, I really like it.
- 25:59SPEAKER_01: I enjoy it personally.
- 26:01SPEAKER_01: I'm so I'm so glad.
- 26:02SPEAKER_00: I'm so glad you drink the brow Kool-Aid.
- 26:05SPEAKER_00: It's it's I really do.
- 26:07SPEAKER_01: I really do.
- 26:08SPEAKER_01: No, I feel like it's just I I don't know.
- 26:10SPEAKER_01: I think natural, like being an for me, like enhancing natural features has always been my thing.
- 26:16SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 26:16SPEAKER_01: So like I think a lot of women resonate with that.
- 26:19SPEAKER_01: I mean, we love our makeup.
- 26:20SPEAKER_01: I think all of us love our makeup and we love the, you know, whatever we can do to just, you know, really doll up and go out for a great night.
- 26:27SPEAKER_01: But when it comes to everyday beauty, these little things go a long way.
- 26:31SPEAKER_01: And you know, it's hard to understand that, especially if you grew up like, you know, growing up in the 90s or the 80s.
- 26:37SPEAKER_01: I mean, it's hard for us because we didn't have anything, you know, to establish these habits.
- 26:42SPEAKER_01: But now I feel like I almost like I'm the kind of consumer, like I go the extra mile because we didn't have it for so long, you know what I mean?
- 26:49SPEAKER_01: And now we do.
- 26:50SPEAKER_01: So, you know, get into a routine.
- 26:52SPEAKER_01: So I I completely agree.
- 26:54SPEAKER_01: And I'm a huge believer, browtable, right?
- 26:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah, the project.
- 26:58SPEAKER_00: And that and it's as important as everything inside of the, you know, you can tell the difference when you don't pay attention to them versus when you do.
- 27:07SPEAKER_00: It's just such a and it I'm with you about what I call it as a as an art, my artist self, because you know, it's that's still you know, where we're heading with Genuist is actually creating an impactful over 50 brand that has to do with defining your features and having products that actually, you know, I I don't know about you, but every woman that I come across and all my clients that walk in my studio go, I'm not gonna do all that.
- 27:32SPEAKER_00: Like you got 10 minutes, give me a 10 minute routine, but also something that isn't boring that I always call you know, I'm now in my 50s, like I don't want to wait, I want to look like a troll under the bridge, right?
- 27:43SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 27:46SPEAKER_01: Well, you know what's interesting though is like the West has some very I don't know why we have such like rigid, you know, terms when it comes to like brow care, because I'm like I'm Indian, so I grew up with the idea of like threading, like threading was a big thing, like you know what I mean?
- 28:01SPEAKER_01: And so even my mother was like, What are you doing getting your eyebrows waxed?
- 28:05SPEAKER_01: Just go to a threading salon.
- 28:07SPEAKER_01: And I was like, we don't have those either.
- 28:08SPEAKER_01: So you know, I mean, they're all over India, you're right, and India, but like here in the West, we don't have a lot of options.
- 28:15SPEAKER_01: And and I I think, you know, when it comes to waxing or anything like that, it's just barbaric at this point to me.
- 28:21SPEAKER_01: Like, I just don't think it's important to do all that.
- 28:24SPEAKER_01: I mean, I and I want to ask you, you know, this is the reason I'm mentioning all this is I want to ask you for something for the fall, because I know there's a lot of women out there that in the fall, like the whole look changes.
- 28:34SPEAKER_01: I feel like we go towards the more bushier look, you know?
- 28:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah, something changes.
- 28:39SPEAKER_01: So I need tips that you have for us.
- 28:42SPEAKER_00: So, you know, first is you know, make sure you're really conditioning those brows um hardcore in the fall because you'll start to notice with the weather changing that the brows will start to dry out.
- 28:53SPEAKER_00: So you might need to add, you know, a little more of the mask, you know, use it as a mask.
- 28:58SPEAKER_00: Like I just did it for three clients today as it's pulling down here, you know, in and I'm in Atlanta, you know, I'm starting to see the the change in people's texture.
- 29:06SPEAKER_00: So that's one, you know, if you start filling in your brows and the brows are really dry, then you end up getting that where the brows look excessively kind of dry and powdery when you start adding more makeup, you know, into the brow.
- 29:18SPEAKER_00: Um, when you go to fill in the brows, the first thing you want to do is use a brow color.
- 29:25SPEAKER_00: We have several things on the Authentic Beauty website, not the genuine because it's not a genuine speech.
- 29:30SPEAKER_00: We're gonna be coming out with something really amazing for a brow fill sooner than later.
- 29:35SPEAKER_00: Uh, very, very new and very cool, and it works with the whole system.
- 29:40SPEAKER_00: But you want to color the hair, right?
- 29:42SPEAKER_00: So finding each individual hair on your brow when you go to fill in, so you're actually playing with it so that it coats not the skin, but the hair, right?
- 29:54SPEAKER_00: So that's that's first.
- 29:56SPEAKER_00: So you want to make sure to go very gently, trying not to hit the skin, right?
- 30:00SPEAKER_00: So we had a lot of products that are staining the skin, and that's kind of the effect of the microblading, too, is if you want it to look natural, you keep the brow color on the brow hair itself.
- 30:10SPEAKER_00: That's why I tint.
- 30:11SPEAKER_00: That's why we tend professionally, is if you keep it on the hair, you can get that level one and that natural look just by tinting.
- 30:19SPEAKER_00: And then when you go to wear more makeup, because that's what's happening in the fall, right?
- 30:23SPEAKER_00: Everybody's wearing more makeup as we hit the fall.
- 30:27SPEAKER_00: And then you want to go under the skin with a product.
- 30:31SPEAKER_00: So, you know, in creating in the line, if you saw the roller brow pen, that pen is it has a lightly pigmented brow stain.
- 30:40SPEAKER_00: And I think that's what everybody wishes, you know, that microgalleting look like.
- 30:44SPEAKER_00: But it's so natural to just hit right where you see the empty spaces of the brow, and you can just gently like roll that in, and it just will bump up the definition of the brow because it's again, you don't inherently need to color underneath the brow to make it look natural.
- 31:03SPEAKER_00: And I think it's a huge misconception about how we fill in brows, is that oh, we're just gonna hit that pencil and we're gonna rake it in.
- 31:10SPEAKER_00: And if you fit brows, like I'm sure you know that pencil is not necessarily your friend, it makes it look too thick, and the waxes in it are not great, right?
- 31:20SPEAKER_00: So you know, and the primer, you know, the brow primer which you awarded us, and I so appreciate that.
- 31:27SPEAKER_00: That is one way to be able to get the hair to get it to not lay on the skin because it will, that wax base goes and it coats the skin so that if you go to draw on with a pencil that's waxy, it just makes it makes it look so much softer than it going straight on the skin.
- 31:45SPEAKER_00: And so it just depends.
- 31:46SPEAKER_00: You know, what I say is look at what your lip color is.
- 31:49SPEAKER_00: Imagine you were a black and white picture, right?
- 31:52SPEAKER_00: And if you grayscale yourself out, you know, if you look at yourself and you're like, okay, I have on a deep, deep color on my lip, you want to make sure that your brows are not like a are not lighter than the color that's on your lip, right?
- 32:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 32:08SPEAKER_00: So that's like a really great, you know, we learn that as artists, right?
- 32:11SPEAKER_00: If we're gonna create balance, you you have to look at yourself like a grayscale, look at your client, you know, like a grayscale and make sure that they're balanced with the depth, right?
- 32:21SPEAKER_00: So, you know, that's one way to look is if you put on your lip color, are my brows too dark for what I'm wearing or are they too light for what I'm wearing?
- 32:28SPEAKER_00: And that's when you adjust the color.
- 32:29SPEAKER_00: So does that does that make sense?
- 32:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it does.
- 32:31SPEAKER_01: I love that.
- 32:32SPEAKER_01: And I I completely agree when you put it like I remember when the first eyebrow pencils that I used, like when I tried them, that was a big problem, exactly what you said.
- 32:40SPEAKER_01: It would be too much under the brow, like on the actual skin.
- 32:42SPEAKER_01: It just looked like I was drawing on my eyebrows, like that's what it looked like.
- 32:47SPEAKER_00: So I feel like horrible, yeah, not natural.
- 32:50SPEAKER_00: And you know, if if that's what you're going for, again, I believe in the personal expression, you know, everybody's image should be a reflection of their authentic self, right?
- 32:59SPEAKER_00: And so, you know, that to me is if somebody wants to have full down full eyebrows, but I personally think that people just don't know, like they just don't know what the eyebrows are supposed to look like.
- 33:11SPEAKER_00: So then we have all these pensibles, and they're like, oh, I guess I'm supposed to fill them in like this.
- 33:15SPEAKER_00: This is what everybody's showing.
- 33:17SPEAKER_00: I'm like, no, don't do it.
- 33:20SPEAKER_01: No, I think it takes a lot of playing around too, you know what I mean?
- 33:23SPEAKER_01: And I think it's a little scary, you know.
- 33:25SPEAKER_01: I mean, the eyebrows are a scary space.
- 33:27SPEAKER_01: I mean, in the sense of like, if you don't know what you're doing, that's what I think all of us are scared of.
- 33:31SPEAKER_01: I don't know what I'm doing.
- 33:32SPEAKER_01: So I don't want to screw it up, you know?
- 33:34SPEAKER_01: And so that's where it's just very, very helpful to have these kind of tips.
- 33:38SPEAKER_01: So thank you so much, Allison.
- 33:40SPEAKER_01: That was really helpful because you know, I I really believe that if you try the right way, like you'll eventually figure out what's good for you and like your and in addition to like going to a professional, making sure that they're done right, you know, all that.
- 33:52SPEAKER_01: But like at home stuff, it's very I kinda a great area for me as a consumer is like, you know, figuring out how to do maintain that daily look for your eyebrows.
- 34:01SPEAKER_01: And so, you know, for everyone listening, I hope you know that helps you guys.
- 34:06SPEAKER_01: And if you have any other comments, please let us know.

- 34:42SPEAKER_00: We're gonna, I'm gonna, I'm gonna coach you through this.
