- 0:15Speaker 1: Pushkin. Hello, Hello listeners, Malcolm here to let you know
- 0:23Speaker 1: that next week we're bringing you something completely Now. Many
- 0:29Speaker 1: years ago, I had an adventure in Hollywood. Me and
- 0:32Speaker 1: my friend Steve pitched a movie idea. The whole list
- 0:34Speaker 1: of studio bosses and fancy offices all across Los Angeles.
- 0:39Speaker 1: We waved our fingers in the air, We jumped up
- 0:41Speaker 1: and down. Agents called us from their cars. We put
- 0:43Speaker 1: them on speaker. There were offers, there were stars, was
- 0:47Speaker 1: a deal, and then nothing happened. And I got my
- 0:54Speaker 1: first lesson in Hollywood, which is that most things never happen.
- 0:58Speaker 1: In fact, maybe the best things never happen. There's a
- 1:01Speaker 1: phrase they use out in Los Angeles to describe the
- 1:04Speaker 1: purgatory where once promising scripts go to die development hell.
- 1:12Speaker 1: And our idea here a vision's history, is to do
- 1:15Speaker 1: a little mini series, half a dozen or so episodes
- 1:18Speaker 1: where we tell development hell stories. Call up a screenwriter
- 1:22Speaker 1: or a director and ask them to tell the story
- 1:25Speaker 1: of the story that got away. And it turns out
- 1:28Speaker 1: there are a ton of great stories about great stories
- 1:32Speaker 1: that got away. You know what. The analogy, the best
- 1:37Speaker 1: analogy to your world is if you work in the
- 1:40Speaker 1: drug industry. Most people who are researchers for drug companies
- 1:44Speaker 1: will spend their entire career working on drugs that will
- 1:47Speaker 1: never make it to the market. It's the same thing.
- 1:49Speaker 1: So it's like this weird thing whether these incredibly smart
- 1:51Speaker 1: people who are doing all of this brilliant work and
- 1:54Speaker 1: nothing they do will ever see the lot of day.
- 1:58Speaker 1: I find that, Yeah, it's a little bit heartbreaking. Oh
- 2:04Speaker 1: it's heartbreaking all right, and funny and weird and fascinating.
- 2:08Speaker 1: It's a glimpse into the Hollywood that never happened. We're
- 2:11Speaker 1: going to start with the story that got me going
- 2:13Speaker 1: on this adventure, my wild ride around Los Angeles years
- 2:17Speaker 1: ago with my friend Steve. I must say, the entire
- 2:19Speaker 1: time we were with Leo, I was like so hopelessly starstruck.
- 2:23Speaker 1: And from there, we're going to talk about a sci
- 2:25Speaker 1: fi story with a twist that was a little too
- 2:27Speaker 1: twisty for the movie business. He kicks down the door
- 2:30Speaker 1: and he points his gun, and then the hacker turns
- 2:33Speaker 1: around and it's a child. We've got an amazing biopic
- 2:38Speaker 1: about the world's most famous chimpanzee, an utterly insane musical
- 2:44Speaker 1: about Elvis as a cab driver, and so much more,
- 2:48Speaker 1: not to mention an unhealthy amount of name dropping, celebrity gossip,
- 2:53Speaker 1: and endless digressions. Oh my god. At one point during
- 2:58Speaker 1: one of these interviews, I looked across at my producer
- 3:00Speaker 1: Nina and realized she was crying. And then I realized
- 3:05Speaker 1: I was crying. And guess what when you listen to
- 3:08Speaker 1: that little bit, My guess is that you'll be crying too,
- 3:12Speaker 1: unless you have a heart of stone. And if you
- 3:15Speaker 1: have a heart of stone, maybe this podcast isn't for you.
- 3:22Speaker 1: You can hear development hell right here in this feed
- 3:24Speaker 1: starting February twenty ninth, when we'll be dropping the first
- 3:27Speaker 1: two episodes two for the price of one, then weekly
- 3:31Speaker 1: after that, and as always, you can hear all of
- 3:34Speaker 1: Revision's history add free by subscribing to pushkin Plus. So
- 3:44Speaker 1: it's actually, it's actually an incredible story.
