Transcript
- 0:09SPEAKER_00: Welcome to the Daily Writer, where we share a lesson each day to help you cultivate the habits for creative success.
- 0:17SPEAKER_00: If you've spent much time around other writers, you've probably observed that as a whole, writers are a pretty congenial bunch.
- 0:25SPEAKER_00: For example, we don't normally see fist fights or shouting matches at writing conventions, although I admit that would be kind of fun to see.
- 0:33SPEAKER_00: Writers are the kind of people that you want to go hang out with at a coffee shop.
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: They're the kind of people you just want to be around because they're so nice and friendly.
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: But if we're not careful, this congeniality, this nice guy or nice gal approach, can really start to work against us.
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: We can easily slip into a passivity that lets other people roll right over us and our writing goals.
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: Now, keep in mind people don't do this intentionally.
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: It's just the way life goes.
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: Everybody has their own agenda, and if we don't protect our writing time, it'll just get lost in the shuffle.
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: Writers of every age have felt the need to protect their writing time.
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: Flannery O'Connor once said, I write only about two hours every day because that's all the energy I have.
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: But I don't let anything interfere with those two hours at the same time and the same place.
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: Now is not the time to be passive.
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: You might even have to get a little bit stern.
- 1:31SPEAKER_00: You must know your boundaries and let other people know about them.
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: I know it's hard for us writers to do sometimes, but it's really necessary.
- 1:39SPEAKER_00: Do whatever it takes within the bounds of acceptable behavior, of course, in order to protect your writing time.
- 1:45SPEAKER_00: It must be kept as a sacred obligation.
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: Without that writing time, you have no hope of producing the words.
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: And the words have no hope of producing the books, the lessons, the articles, and all the other things that you want to do as a writer.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: Hey, thanks so much for listening to today's episode.
