- 0:00Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the three O take, where we talk
- 0:04all things Major League Baseball.
- 0:06Here's Kyle Corwin and Nate Reyes it.
- 0:11All starts. Right now.
- 0:14Oh, welcome back to the three O take presented by seat kick.
- 0:18This is episode 467. I'll be your host Kyle Corwin.
- 0:21I'm here with my Co host Knight Reyes Knight.
- 0:30One final travel pod, my friend. One more Rd.
- 0:34Rd. for the boys as a reminder, yours truly, Myrtle Beach, Nate
- 0:42Reyes in California so. The phone IA just important
- 0:48fires out here. Important to you from the road.
- 0:52We'll be back home next episode, so we'll be back in our usual
- 0:56setups, but for now, we are coming to you live from the
- 1:01road. Got some things to talk about
- 1:02here off the top, though it's not necessarily it doesn't
- 1:09warrant its own segment, but can we just touch on this Bowden
- 1:13Francis situation here real quick?
- 1:16The poor guy can't get the job done.
- 1:18Well, I mean, he gets it done for 8 innings, takes no hitters
- 1:21into the 9th, but then he's like, oh, here's an opportunity
- 1:24for me to give up a home run. Let me just go ahead and do
- 1:27that. And he's done that now I think,
- 1:29I think I read or not read. I told you before, we hopped on
- 1:35twice in his last four outings. That's big time.
- 1:41That's good. That's good baseball though, you
- 1:43know what I mean? If you're Bowden Francis,
- 1:46though, are you, are you thinking to yourself like maybe
- 1:52this whole no hitter thing just isn't, isn't for me?
- 1:56Just not feeling it, you know, just not that's not not my
- 1:59thing. Whatever, it's all good.
- 2:02I mean you could I mean these are quality stars, very good.
- 2:05I think high quality stars. I think what the I didn't see
- 2:08what the pitch count was, but I think what the underestimated, I
- 2:13don't know, maybe understated aspect to the difficulty of a no
- 2:20hitter or perfect game is again, I don't know what the pitch
- 2:25count was at. But when the when it starts
- 2:28getting high and you can't really work hitters the way you
- 2:32were, maybe towards the beginning or middle of the game,
- 2:36you got to start attacking the zone a little bit and you're
- 2:41susceptible to this kind of stuff.
- 2:46A little bit of juice, a little bit of pop.
- 2:48You know, if you're going to leave something in the zone,
- 2:51it's going to get hit. But that's the beauty of no
- 2:56hitter. You know what I'm saying?
- 2:57It's about like somewhat economical ABS that second or
- 3:03third time through the lineup and then the fourth time,
- 3:05hopefully you still have some wiggle room pitch count wise to
- 3:09be able to work around guys. Otherwise you're going to have
- 3:11to fill it up and this is what happens.
- 3:14He was at he finished up the 8th at or no, I'm sorry, the 7th
- 3:21because I was locked in for the the last handful of innings
- 3:24because your boy is on my fantasy team and I needed a big
- 3:31outing from him today. And so I'm just I'm tracking.
- 3:36I mean I was tracking from just about the the beginning of the
- 3:39outing, but he got to the 7th and I want to say he was at one
- 3:44O 2 and they're going, you know, we've I was listening to the
- 3:48broadcast ago. You know, we've seen this play
- 3:50out this year where you have a guy, not not necessarily with
- 3:54the Jays, but just generally around baseball, you have a guy
- 3:57with an opportunity to do something special, take it into
- 4:00the 8th, take it into the 9th. But you got to look at it, You
- 4:02got to look at the pitch count. And it's like, well, do we do we
- 4:05prioritize the, the feats over his health, over the, over the
- 4:11potential win, over the opportunity to win.
- 4:13And they were talking about that.
- 4:14They go, you go, they were going, you've got a one run
- 4:17game. He's at 102.
- 4:18And then he goes out in the eighth, gets the 1st 2 outs in
- 4:21the eighth on two pitches. And they go, I think everybody
- 4:25in the ballpark, probably in the dugout, took a sigh of relief to
- 4:28go, OK, we can push this to the 9th, gets to the 9th, No luck.
- 4:32But what he's doing in between the 8th and 9th, is there
- 4:38something he's doing in the dugout?
- 4:40You know what I mean? Like.
- 4:43Well, I I can do that. There's one thing that probably
- 4:46isn't helping the situation. Vlady flew out to the track.
- 4:50I want to say in the eighth comes back into the dugout base
- 4:55of the steps. That's basically where where
- 4:57Francis is sitting and starts doing push ups like right in
- 5:01front of them as the whole like, oh, I got to, you know, can I
- 5:04get a little more beefed up if I'm trying to hit these out And
- 5:07I'm like, my brother, we got a guy trying to complete the no
- 5:11hitter. Let's move it along.
- 5:13Let's move it along. Not to say that was the reason
- 5:16couldn't close the deal, but. You never know.
- 5:18You never know. Yeah, I mean, you never know
- 5:20what what's affecting these guys mentally.
- 5:24Speaking of mental, you'd have to be mental to throw at a guy
- 5:32when you've got Bryce Harper on the base pass behind you, and
- 5:39that's exactly what Edwin Useda. There it is.
- 5:44Like that? You like that?
- 5:46Yeah. I'm impressed.
- 5:47Well. Flair Useda.
- 5:48That's what Edwin Useda of the Rays did on Tuesday night.
- 5:54I'm just going to go ahead and say it.
- 5:59How many times do we have to say this?
- 6:01I'm over the the the brawl culture.
- 6:07Yeah. I'm over the and I'm not even
- 6:10gonna I'm not even I'm air quotes brawl culture.
- 6:16Just let the boys eat. And you know, I, I, we're at a
- 6:21point now where I don't know if it's much, if it's as much as
- 6:25the league preventing these guys from just letting it eat or if
- 6:28it's the guys themselves getting in their own way there where
- 6:31they're, they're all, they're all bark, no bite there.
- 6:35We know that there's a percentage of guys around the
- 6:37league that would, would throw hands without question.
- 6:41But are we at a point now where we have to start?
- 6:44I mean, we might be at a point where we have to start asking
- 6:47the question. Maybe these guys don't want to
- 6:51throw hands. Maybe they're just in it for the
- 6:53dramatics. Well, I'm not going to go as far
- 6:55as saying it soft. You said you said I didn't say
- 6:57soft, but like how many it's, it's, it's a tired act.
- 7:02It's a tired act. They, they, they cut to the
- 7:05bullpen and the guys are coming in like the the horsemen, the
- 7:08cavalry. Like what?
- 7:10Stop. I'd be so mad if I was.
- 7:12How many more times do we have to watch this go down before we
- 7:17we put an end to it? Either be done with it or let
- 7:21them throw hands. Yes, throw hands please.
- 7:29Something something. I don't want to watch this
- 7:31anymore. I'm so sick of it.
- 7:34I'm so sick of it being labeled a bra.
- 7:38Like it's not a brawl. Like go fight, punch, kick,
- 7:45tackle something. And spare me the whole like,
- 7:48well, from the perspective of the league, well, we have to
- 7:51protect our assets and we can't be encouraging fighting.
- 7:54What do you think the NHL does? They have assets out there on
- 7:59the ice and they're still they're still dropping gloves.
- 8:02OK. And I know that's like that's a
- 8:06a cliche comparison. That's what we always go to.
- 8:09Well, let's, let's make it more like the NHL.
- 8:14Make it like the Junior Hockey League.
- 8:16What a peewee hockey. I don't care.
- 8:18Just something that's different than this.
- 8:23It looked it's because the game's gotten soft.
- 8:26But if you think about it, so many parts of the of the game
- 8:29have been removed, like breaking up double plays gone hard plays
- 8:37at the plate, you know, catcher blocking the plate, like all
- 8:40that stuff's kind of gone. The policing the game side of
- 8:45things has also faded. You know, like I'm going to buzz
- 8:48your tower a little bit. Like, you know, Bob Gibson,
- 8:52Randy Johnson, they talk about like, I don't want you that
- 8:54close my plate. That's the only reason I'm doing
- 8:58it now. It's like you hit a 450 foot
- 9:01tank against me last AB. So now I'm going to brush you
- 9:05off. Like, no, that's, that's not how
- 9:08it works. Like it, it's just it's gotten
- 9:11soft. It's heavily policed.
- 9:16And I think the worst part of this with Yucida is that it's
- 9:21just like you can very much tell it's just he was getting lit up.
- 9:26Like you're upset that you're getting lit up.
- 9:28But are you going to, are you going to hit him with a sinker
- 9:31though? That that's where the confusion
- 9:33for me always comes into play is like, you have to like it's,
- 9:35it's easy to get swept up in the heat of the moment, Like if
- 9:38you're watching the game live or if you're at the game or if
- 9:40you're even like involved in the game.
- 9:42If, if, if you're, if you fit one of those capacities and you
- 9:49see it live, you go, Oh, well, very obviously this was
- 9:52intentional. But if you look, if you look at
- 9:56the broadcast, you can see that he hits him with a 96 mile an
- 10:00hour sinker, which that's impressive in and of itself.
- 10:04Like that's a story on its own. 96 mile an hour sinker.
- 10:10Is that what you're going to throw at a guy if you're
- 10:16genuinely upset with him? If it's right, right, I could
- 10:19see it because it's going to have that tail back in the most
- 10:23of these sinkers aren't really sinkers anymore.
- 10:25Well, that's like hard 2 seamers.
- 10:26Oh, that's what it. Registered as He said it was a
- 10:29change up, he said. I, I, he said I threw it.
- 10:32I hit him with a change up. Essentially just denying that it
- 10:36was intentional, which turns out.
- 10:39To save 96 an hour, change up. Turns out, well, it turns out
- 10:43the league assumed it was intentional because they hit him
- 10:46with a three-game suspension today.
- 10:48I'm I'm assuming a, what do you call it?
- 10:55Why am I blanking? What what's the word reversal?
- 11:04Not a reversal. What's the word appeal?
- 11:06Appeal, yes. I mean, I am certain an appeal
- 11:08is coming because that's what always happens.
- 11:10They, they, they deny it, They say, oh, it was a change up and
- 11:13then they, they appeal it. So I'm sure that's coming.
- 11:17But to your point, he was getting lit up and and
- 11:22Castiano's had a had a point. He's like, you know, you just
- 11:25see guys making the way around the base pass.
- 11:27It's pretty easy to understand why this would happen.
- 11:32But you, I don't know, you just look at the situation, 2 outs in
- 11:36the eighth guy on 2nd, the sinker change up, whatever you
- 11:42want to call it. I don't know it's.
- 11:44I can see, yeah, I could see the pause because I mean, like
- 11:46you're down. What?
- 11:47You're down. Four at that .5.
- 11:49At that .5 you you, you can look at it from both sides because
- 11:54it's like, OK, well you're down 5 why not let it eat in the ribs
- 11:57or on the backside or whatever. Castellanos, who's after that
- 12:02start? Let me watch the game,
- 12:05whoever's. 5th Whoever's fifth in that lineup.
- 12:08Probably not start whether the lefty they have in that lineup
- 12:14because I'm going to go ahead and assume you're wanting you're
- 12:18wanting that right on right matchup.
- 12:23I guess I mean the stock, yeah. I don't know.
- 12:31Are we giving him too much credit for for saying that he
- 12:33was like waiting for the right side match up to to unfold for
- 12:37him to make this happen? Because we talk about all the
- 12:40time the IQ on these guys, not what it used to be.
- 12:44So maybe he's just like, oh, here's a guy that looked at me
- 12:47the wrong way. I don't know.
- 12:48Why is it that, like, how is it that the Phillies knew right
- 12:55away? Like, you saw the breakdown,
- 12:57like Castianos immediately got hit, started yelling, Bryce
- 13:01Harper immediately started saying we don't do that.
- 13:06How did they immediately know that it was on purpose?
- 13:09Normally there's like this little bit of a pause, hit, 2-3
- 13:17seconds go by, you start walking down the line, there's eyes,
- 13:19there's a little chirp, and then it gets into something.
- 13:23This was like hit hey, like immediately.
- 13:27Well, I mean, you and I have both played and and you, you
- 13:32have a feel and I would imagine a majority of these guys who
- 13:36have played for like 80% of their life, they've been around
- 13:39the game long enough to know that they're sort of a now I
- 13:44don't want to say a buzz, but like there's, there's certainly
- 13:48momentum that that builds in that direction as as guys cross
- 13:53the plate, as as walks are issued, as extra base hits are
- 13:57tallied from off the same guy. And this guy, it was just not
- 14:02his night. And it gets to a boiling point
- 14:05where you got a guy who in and of himself is like can, can be
- 14:07pretty fiery times. Nick Castellanos, He gets hit
- 14:10and then right away I'm sure he's going OK.
- 14:13My, my guy, we've seen how this inning is gone.
- 14:15Harper's probably thinking the same thing.
- 14:18You have to imagine that a lot of those guys in that Phillies
- 14:20clubhouse are on the same page with the way they think about
- 14:22things, with the way they process things.
- 14:23They all seem pretty close. So I I would imagine as soon as
- 14:28that happens, as soon as that goes down, that's when that's
- 14:30when the the the pop or the top blows off and then it just
- 14:35ensues. And Amanda, the the thing that I
- 14:38am over though is the raise just as a whole between this between
- 14:43the guy you and I have talked about a handful of times.
- 14:46Race be for a lot of people. I I'm over it, man.
- 14:50The, the arrogance at times. And I'm not necessarily applying
- 14:53the the arrogance label here to you, Sita, but I'm like, can we
- 15:00just dial it back? Can we just have a regular
- 15:01baseball game? Just take your lumps and move
- 15:03on. If this was intentional.
- 15:05I'm telling you, dude, what? Everyone, everyone was ready to
- 15:10like jump on the Yankees when they had their little tiff over
- 15:14the last few years. But let's face it, like the
- 15:17Rays, you have issues with a lot of people.
- 15:21Just saying. Don't understand?
- 15:24Let's move along here. Yoshinobu Yamamoto.
- 15:28Nailed that. Made his return for the first
- 15:31time since we. Tapped in today.
- 15:34I'm locked in made his return to the mound for the first time
- 15:37since June 15th. Put up 4 innings, allowing four
- 15:42hits, one and run with eight KS and did it in 59 pitches.
- 15:46He was on a pitch limit, easing him back into it as we imagined
- 15:52would be the case going up against Shota Iminaga.
- 15:56He went a little deeper given he wasn't on such a pitch limit.
- 15:59Went 7 innings, gave up seven hits, three earned runs.
- 16:02Only had four KS to Yamamoto's eight, but also had zero walks.
- 16:10This was the game. Days and four innings.
- 16:13Yeah, Yep, this was the game we talked about last episode.
- 16:16Like, hey, this might be 1 you want to you want to tune into
- 16:19might might want to flip on if you if you got an open window to
- 16:23catch a ball game. And I I was sure to do that.
- 16:26So was was tuned in for this one.
- 16:29But I got to say I didn't see Tommy Edmond being the
- 16:32difference maker Dodgers, at least in the the early going.
- 16:36His first two home runs of the season for him, having missed a
- 16:40a good amount of time on the IL first two home runs of the year
- 16:45came in the same game for the Dodgers.
- 16:50However, the Cubs came back and won at six three.
- 16:52They had a five run 8th. So this game had a little bit of
- 16:55everything. But like I said, didn't think
- 16:56Tommy Edmond would necessarily be as as much of a factor in
- 17:01that game, especially going up against Imanaga.
- 17:05But it was it was given that Yamamoto was was on a limit.
- 17:13I think it had a little bit of a little bit of everything that we
- 17:17were looking for so. Yeah, dude, just seeing like,
- 17:22even the pregame stuff with like, Otani, Yamamoto, Imanaga,
- 17:26like, it's so sick. It's so sick.
- 17:29And you know, you like, we talked about it last time, like
- 17:33all of Japan had to have been tapped in for this.
- 17:35Like, these are their stars, man.
- 17:37Like, these are their big time names.
- 17:38And didn't disappoint. Good game.
- 17:43Little sloppy defensively with the Dodgers.
- 17:49Yeah. I mean, I I think that like,
- 17:52there's certain things about the Dodgers that have me a little
- 17:54nervous, but Yamamoto coming back is a huge thing.
- 17:58It's just like, I don't know, relying on Kiki, nothing against
- 18:03Tommy had been, but like, we're relying on guys like this like
- 18:06regularly isn't what they had in mind, couldn't have been what
- 18:10they had in mind. So I don't know.
- 18:16But the Cubs, man, they're just, they're playing good ball.
- 18:19They're playing good ball, kind of pushing the envelope a little
- 18:22bit. Good, timely hitting, look like
- 18:25solid defense. But Crow Armstrong, kid just
- 18:29doing all kinds of stuff in center field, robbing home runs
- 18:33to end it, weird sliding plays at the track.
- 18:37That one weird play. Yeah.
- 18:40Just overall, it's like solid. Going back to the Japanese stars
- 18:46featured in this game, I, I, I was thinking about it today and
- 18:50I'm like, I'm as, as I'm pulling the, the rundown here together
- 18:54for the, for our notes, I, I couldn't help but compare and
- 19:00contrast the the the names featured in this game, like the
- 19:07Japanese stars and then comparing it to what happened in
- 19:10the game we just talked about with the quote UN quote brawl.
- 19:13I'm like, I tell you what, man, Western baseball could learn a
- 19:18thing or two from from these Japanese players, 'cause I'm
- 19:22seeing, I'm, you mentioned the pregame like I'm seeing, I'm
- 19:25seeing just cordial behavior. I'm seeing respect paid to one
- 19:30another. I'm seeing bows, I'm seeing tips
- 19:33of the caps. I'm not saying it's got to be
- 19:35that extreme, but I'm like, hey, if we're not going to throw
- 19:38hands, why don't we just be decent human beings instead of
- 19:43running our mouths constantly? I hate it.
- 19:44I don't hate it. Seems like they're doing all
- 19:48right for for for themselves over there in Japan and.
- 19:52Times have changed, I guess. I don't know level of respect,
- 19:57but you're right, I like it. I'm not a fan of it.
- 20:02The head nods. The bows.
- 20:04Big fan. I think that's the the
- 20:06conclusion I've arrived at. I'm a fan of both extremes, like
- 20:09either if, if we're going to if we're going to light this thing
- 20:11up. Yeah, do that like no, punch
- 20:15each other in the throat or bow and get over it.
- 20:20Karate chops to the trachea or yes pre AB bows to one another.
- 20:26That's there's no middle ground. For me it's one or the other.
- 20:29Pick one. Whichever camp you're in, pick
- 20:31one. That's cool you're on board with
- 20:33that. Speaking of picking one of the
- 20:36three Rangers starters that are going over the next few days,
- 20:40which which one are you excited to see back?
- 20:43We got Kumar Rocker making his big league debut on Thursday or
- 20:48his friend of the pod Ryan Ripken likes to say Thursday.
- 20:53You've got Jacob degrom making his season debut on Friday and
- 21:02you got Max Scherzer returning from the IL as well who will be
- 21:05going Saturday. Can I preface this by saying I
- 21:16have this weird and it's not fair to Kumar Raker whatsoever,
- 21:19but I have the. I have this weird mental
- 21:22connection between him and Jack Leiter and I'm like, I hope for
- 21:26his sake that it doesn't go the same way it did for Jack Leiter
- 21:29because there seemed to be a fair amount of height for Jack
- 21:33Leiter, albeit maybe a little deluded comparatively when when
- 21:38looking elsewhere around the league.
- 21:40But Kumar Rocker in a similar boat.
- 21:44I'm just hoping that it goes. I'm hoping it goes better for
- 21:47him. I opted not to pick him up for
- 21:49fantasy because of that. I'm like.
- 21:51I think that's smart. The off chance that it just goes
- 21:54S real quick, he's I think he's getting.
- 21:56Caught in like 60. Pitches anyway so.
- 21:59I think I'm over the Kumar story, to be honest.
- 22:02I think I'm kind of over it. You think it's just been too
- 22:05drawn out at this point? He's just had, he's just been
- 22:07too many hurdles. Too many hurdles, too many
- 22:10injuries. I don't, I haven't really like
- 22:13looked at what his minor league numbers have looked like to this
- 22:19point. It's just, I don't know, man.
- 22:22I'm just I'm kind of over it, kind of over it.
- 22:25I am I'm gonna lean towards more excited about the ground.
- 22:33I think the ground, you know what I mean?
- 22:34Like this is your guy. If you're if you're a Ranger fan
- 22:37like this is your ace in the hole.
- 22:38This is your this is your main man.
- 22:41This is your this is your Maverick, right?
- 22:43Like you need him back. You need him rolling.
- 22:46I'm not gonna say this year. I think we're we all know what
- 22:49this year is for the Texas Rangers, but this is like, you
- 22:54know, something new to get excited about for next year,
- 22:57hopefully. And Scherzer, Yeah, I I don't
- 23:06know. Scherzer Yeah, I mean, sure, you
- 23:10could argue that the. Hard to disrespect the Hall of
- 23:12Famer, but I'm. Yeah, no, I, well, I mean,
- 23:15we've, we've had takes on both sides of the coin regarding
- 23:19Scherzer over the life of this podcast, certainly.
- 23:22But yeah, don't want to, don't want to just slander the guy for
- 23:25wanting to get back. Because if on the flip side, if
- 23:27the guy was like, I mean, I could come back, but I'm just
- 23:29going to coast it out to the end of the year because we're not
- 23:32going anywhere, then we'd be having the opposite
- 23:35conversation. And I don't want to be having
- 23:37that conversation. So, yeah, of the of the three
- 23:42though, I think in terms of excitement, like Scherzer, we
- 23:45kind of know what you're going to get there.
- 23:47He's already, he's already made some appearances.
- 23:48This year hasn't been ideal, but that's the one to me where I'm
- 23:54like, I wouldn't, I don't know. I, I, I feel like we'd be OK if
- 24:02you were just like, hey, because he's already said he wants to
- 24:06pitch in the next year. So it's like, if that OK, if
- 24:08that's the case, we, we can give you a pass here because we've
- 24:11seen how the ends of his seasons have gone health wise.
- 24:15He just, he runs out of gas. Yeah, he gets he gets his arm
- 24:19gets fatigued and it just doesn't it doesn't pan out well
- 24:23too often. So it's like, OK, we can give
- 24:24him, we could give him a pass if that's what if that's the route
- 24:26he wanted to take. But to Grom, I'm excited for him
- 24:31to at least get just a couple opportunities here, maybe even a
- 24:35few opportunities to get his because people are like, why are
- 24:40you coming back? What?
- 24:41What's it for? It's for nothing.
- 24:43I disagree. I look at this and go, OK, if if
- 24:46the Rangers are going to, they're going to tell you
- 24:48they're they're making a late push here.
- 24:50But I think behind closed doors, the Rangers of chalk this season
- 24:54up as hey, it is what it is. We'll let's look ahead to 2025.
- 24:58If that's the case, if that's even the conversation that maybe
- 25:01has made its way to Jacob degrom and like, hey, we're excited to
- 25:05have you back, but don't feel like you got to be our savior.
- 25:09If that's the conversation that's taking place.
- 25:12I'm, I'm looking at this if I'm Jacob degrom as an opportunity
- 25:16to get in the right headspace to prove to myself that the work
- 25:20that I've been doing to come back has paid off and that I'm
- 25:24still that guy. Because I think a lot of people
- 25:27forget how dominant this guy can be when healthy, when on.
- 25:33And I think this is this, this small remaining window that they
- 25:37have can prove or or can prove to be and a, a jumping off
- 25:44point, you might say for 2025, Because if he didn't have this
- 25:48opportunity to at least just get into some game action, then
- 25:52you're not going to you're not going to really know.
- 25:54You're going to you're going to have some ABS, you're going to
- 25:57be throwing flat grounds and you're that's all you're really
- 26:00going to be able to go off of. But if, if you can get into game
- 26:02action, especially, I don't even, I don't know who he would
- 26:06line up against for the remainder of his potential
- 26:08outings this year. But if you can get up against
- 26:10some guys that are actually if, if you can get up against some
- 26:13teams that are actually playing for something, fighting for
- 26:15something, you're going to be getting their best.
- 26:17So it's like, what better way to to use this app as an
- 26:22opportunity to prove yourself that that things are moving in
- 26:25the right direction for you? Yeah, well, I mean, there's a,
- 26:28there's a couple things that I think of #1 like, get some
- 26:33positivity out of this season, right?
- 26:36Like take something with you into the offseason, bring
- 26:38something into, you know, a solid point for you to work off
- 26:42of and and kind of just build off of through spring training
- 26:44and in the next year. The other thing is that like
- 26:51you're talking to a team that is filled with veterans.
- 26:58It's filled with pride and competitiveness and filled with
- 27:05a Hall of Fame manager that is probably saying, you know what,
- 27:09boys like, yeah, 7 1/2 out of the wild card at the moment,
- 27:13eight out in the division. We're probably done for the
- 27:17year. But overall, like, let's bring
- 27:20some teams down with us, you know what I mean?
- 27:23Like, I don't want to be that that doormat for these these
- 27:26other teams trying to compete. He can get into the postseason
- 27:30if they're still fighting for a spot.
- 27:32So, you know, there's some there's a sense of pride there.
- 27:35Like I don't think it's it's time to throw in the towel.
- 27:38But that type of mentality is going to teach, you know, your
- 27:41young core. And let's face it, like no,
- 27:43sure, as there is not the core. This isn't your guy moving
- 27:47forward. The Grom may be at the back end,
- 27:51but like overall your core, you're talking about a lighter,
- 27:53you're talking about a Kumar, you're talking about Jonah Heim,
- 27:57Josh Young, Evan Carter, Corey Seeger.
- 28:01You know, you're talking about guys that are like, you know, be
- 28:03like, hey, we're going to go continue to do this moving
- 28:06forward. And there's a sense of pride
- 28:08that we need to carry ourselves with.
- 28:09There's a professionalism that we need to still bring to the
- 28:12table every day. And so it's like, you know, I, I
- 28:17don't, I don't want to see them laying down and not competing.
- 28:21I want to see what they've got. And again, something to build
- 28:24off of because a majority of these names are going to be back
- 28:27next year. So.
- 28:30And this is what we were expecting, by the way, right?
- 28:33Like it's so hard to repeat. Sure.
- 28:36Yeah, it's so hard to repeat so. No, for sure.
- 28:40I just think it maybe we were probably hoping for a little
- 28:44more than what they've given us this year, but.
- 28:47For sure, I was hoping for more closer finish at least.
- 28:50Yeah. But I mean, if you're not going
- 28:51to repeat, maybe doesn't matter if you're eight games out or
- 28:57four games out it, it may not matter at that point.
- 29:00But tell me a little bit. Give me your thoughts here on
- 29:04Jason Dominguez talking about being part of it, of a potential
- 29:09core seems to be up for the remainder of the year and it
- 29:12seems as though he will be getting opportunities just about
- 29:17every day from here on out. Give me your thoughts on that.
- 29:21Yeah, it's going to, it's, it's about damn time #1 I heard, I
- 29:27read a lot of reports that there was, you know, kind of some back
- 29:30and forth between the front office and the other names that
- 29:35were fighting for this. Other guys felt like he maybe
- 29:38wasn't ready. I don't know.
- 29:41The Verdugo experiment is, is so strange, all of this like this
- 29:45weird loyalty to a one year guy, like a guy that's going to be a
- 29:49free agent next year. It's very strange.
- 29:54So it's going to be a just thing to see how they how they do it
- 29:58health wise. I think like when you see
- 30:00lefties on the mound, there's a good chance for Dugos obviously
- 30:05going to be out. There's a good chance that, you
- 30:08know, Stanton is going to be in as DH.
- 30:10So like, you know, you're likely going to see going to see him
- 30:17and left and then, you know, judge and and center and then,
- 30:20you know, set on right. So I mean, it's a good
- 30:23opportunity. This is good.
- 30:25This is good time to come up. He came up last year at this
- 30:28time and we saw some flashes of brilliance.
- 30:31But let's face it, like the guy's nickname is the Martian.
- 30:34Like he's there's so much upside here.
- 30:37There's such a high ceiling. So it's like it's good to see
- 30:41him get this type of experience. And it's about thing time that
- 30:44they've started to write him in the lineup every day because
- 30:47like this team needs a spark. Would they need more athleticism
- 30:51on the bases? They need, you know, higher
- 30:54quality defense, higher quality at bat.
- 30:55He's a switch hitter. You can plug him in that like
- 30:58anywhere from 5:00 to 7:00 in the lineup, kind of alternate
- 31:04between Stanton or behind Wells. He's a threat, dude.
- 31:08And like this guy is just he's the future.
- 31:13He's the future so personally if it was up to me, I'd like to see
- 31:19him in center. I'd like to see Judge in right
- 31:21and Soto and left. It's been a lot of blunders in
- 31:24right field. No no offense to Soto but like
- 31:27he's not as good as Judge in right and Dominguez is better in
- 31:33center than Judge so it's AI. Don't know.
- 31:38It's so hard to see the decisions being made, but big
- 31:43thanks to DJ Lemahieu going into baseball jail with some kind of
- 31:48made-up My L stint. And chances are he's probably
- 31:53not going to be back for the rest of the year, I would guess.
- 31:58Speaking of the Yankees, can we give some much deserved love to
- 32:04Seth Lugo? Bro carved up the Yankees on
- 32:10Tuesday night, but when you when you zoom out big he's.
- 32:15Carved up a. Lot of teams for the majority,
- 32:20if not the whole year. Tuesday night goes up against
- 32:24the Yankees in the Bronx. 7 innings, 10 KS, zero walks,
- 32:29three hits allowed, all of which were singles at one point during
- 32:33the game. He retired 17 in a row and not a
- 32:37single Yankee reached second base against him.
- 32:42He is knocking on the door, talking about carving for the
- 32:45majority of the season. He's been healthy.
- 32:47He's been available, which as you know, the best of ability is
- 32:51availability, and he has been. He has been available.
- 32:56He is knocking on the door of 200 innings.
- 32:58He's at 193. Kansas City has not had a
- 33:02starter throw 200 plus in a single season since Edison
- 33:07Volquez back in 2015, barely reaching the market 200 and a
- 33:11third. So he's got three starts left, I
- 33:16believe against the Tigers, the Giants and the Braves.
- 33:23And by the way, I, I want to say we talked about innings within
- 33:30the last week or two, just what is what the landscape is looking
- 33:34like around the league. His 193 as of this morning,
- 33:39we're the most in baseball and, and touching on more of just
- 33:45his, his dominance and needing respect and the love that I
- 33:49don't think we unfortunately have given him as much this
- 33:53year. 294 ERA, which is the 5th best in all of baseball.
- 33:57And say what you will about wins, he's tied for the most in
- 34:00baseball at 16 with a couple of guys by the names of Chris Sale
- 34:06and Tarek Schuble. You may have heard of them.
- 34:09They are currently in their respective hunts for Triple
- 34:14Crowns. We're looking at a possible
- 34:16double crown, double Triple Crown season of baseball this
- 34:20year. So that'd be awfully sick.
- 34:26But yeah, just not much more to say on on Seth Lugo.
- 34:29But just needed to address that and and acknowledge the fact
- 34:34that we can sit here and talk about Bobby Witt.
- 34:37We can talk about some of the other arms on that staff.
- 34:40So like Seth Lugo cannot be left out of that conversation has
- 34:45played a huge, a huge vital role for the Royals and where they
- 34:50are currently at right now, despite the the recent skid
- 34:55they've they've hit. You can only think, you can only
- 34:59imagine that they'll they'll right the ship and and they'll
- 35:03be playing some October baseball, or at least I hope so.
- 35:06I don't know. I mean, maybe if you're not
- 35:10exactly on board with the Royals, maybe you're not wishing
- 35:12that, but I think most people would it be it would be a
- 35:15refreshing sight to see Bobby Witt in Kansas City in October.
- 35:21So that's what I'm I'm looking forward to in that regard.
- 35:24Yeah, he's, I mean, look, Seth Lugos being the the biggest
- 35:28steal and, and I think he's probably not getting the
- 35:32recognition that that he that he deserves just because of that.
- 35:38I mean, he doesn't, it's not like super sexy, you know what I
- 35:41mean? And I know you mentioned a ton
- 35:43of punch outs against the against the Yanks yesterday, but
- 35:46like that's not necessarily his game.
- 35:48It's not necessarily his style. He's got like I think 40 less,
- 35:523040 less strikeouts compared to Google at the moment and then
- 35:5830-40 more hits. He's a pitch to contact guy.
- 36:01I mean, and shoot, it's it's probably a combination of how
- 36:07quiet the Yankees offense can be at times.
- 36:10But also like this man was spotting up dude.
- 36:13He was he was hitting his spots overall and like just the
- 36:17movement and and the corners that he's hugging.
- 36:20Like if you are a fan of pitching, not just throwing and
- 36:28searching for strikeouts, if you're a fan of actual old
- 36:31school true pitching, what Seth Lugo, highly impressive, highly
- 36:40impressive. I I can't wait to see a
- 36:42postseason star to his. It's it's going to be a show.
- 36:47Talking about the postseason, the guy that you are certainly
- 36:50going to see in the postseason, Kyle Schwarber, just a little
- 36:54note here, now has 14 lead off home runs this season, which is
- 37:00a Major League record. Kind of sucked though.
- 37:03He did it in a game in which he was later pulled from due to a
- 37:07what did he like Hyperextended his elbow, I think.
- 37:12But I think reports back or test came back positive.
- 37:14I don't think there's anything I don't think there's anything
- 37:17wrong internally structurally. So I think we're I think
- 37:22Phillies missed a missed a a bullet there.
- 37:28That would have been a huge blow to their late stretch here as we
- 37:36approach the middle of September.
- 37:39But what's crazy to me, I've I've I read this when I was
- 37:44pulling some notes together. He has 35 homers this year,
- 37:50which was the 45th at, well, his his 35th this, this one we're
- 37:57talking about, was his 45th leadoff Homer of his career.
- 38:04Do you know how many of those he's hit since joining the
- 38:07Phillies? Only what, 2022?
- 38:152 not even 3 full seasons. I'm lost.
- 38:21Read those numbers again. Start over. 35 homers on the
- 38:26year. This year, yeah.
- 38:28His most recent? Yeah.
- 38:31Which was which set the Major League record for lead off home
- 38:34runs. OK.
- 38:37Was the 45th lead off Homer of his career.
- 38:42But 35 of them have come this year. 35 home runs overall this
- 38:49year. 35 overall home runs this year Let's let's let's here
- 38:53let's go back to. The normally been in the lineup
- 38:55thought he was leading off quite often.
- 38:59He's got 14 lead off home runs this year.
- 39:04OK. He's got 35 home runs in total
- 39:08this year. OK.
- 39:13He has 45 lead off homers in his career.
- 39:18How many of those have come since joining the Phillies back
- 39:24in 2022? Of the 45.
- 39:27Of the 45 minder, Yeah. How many?
- 39:3838. All right, well, you just ruined
- 39:40the whole thing. It was 32.
- 39:41I thought 32 was going to be an impressive number given he's
- 39:44only hit 45 of them and he's been playing for God knows how
- 39:47long, but he has 32 in a Phillies uniform since 2022.
- 39:54Of of the 45. I just thought that was a wild
- 39:56stat. I.
- 39:57Was going to look it up. Do we need to give Joe Madden
- 39:59some credit here? I feel like he was the one when,
- 40:02you know, he was in Chicago that like really tried this out,
- 40:06right? Is that where he was in the line
- 40:10up in Chicago? It's been so long I couldn't.
- 40:12I don't even. Remember of Chicago I.
- 40:15Towards the end of that run. That's what I was about to look
- 40:16up. I thought that I thought that
- 40:20Joe Madden was the one that that wanted to try that.
- 40:24How long has Schwarber been in the league?
- 40:27I mean, that was 16. How long?
- 40:29How long had he been around before that?
- 40:36It couldn't have been much longer than that. 15, OK, yeah,
- 40:43I was like, it's 15, maybe a year, man.
- 40:48He's an old. He's an old dog now, man.
- 40:50Trying to find it. He's been around the league.
- 40:53Find the It's so hard on your phone.
- 40:58I'm looking at baseball savant. Baseball Savant normally shows
- 41:04like where he hits in the order, right?
- 41:06Batting order splits, There we go.
- 41:07Perfect. Why is it just showing the
- 41:11Phillies though? I don't want just 2024 on his
- 41:16whole career. It's too hard.
- 41:24Batting order splits, Almost there.
- 41:28Batting order splits. I'm not almost there.
- 41:35It's too hard on your phone. Trash.
- 41:46Yeah. Any who's I think it was, I
- 41:50think it was like, I think it was like after they had won the
- 42:02World Series, where he like came back after not playing for
- 42:04months and he was like tracking pitches 'cause he couldn't
- 42:08swing. He ended up coming back and
- 42:10being huge in the World Series. I think the following years when
- 42:14Joe Men really started messing around with that.
- 42:17I don't know how consistent it was, but it seems like once you
- 42:22got to Philly, they were like, yeah, this is your thing.
- 42:24Yeah, at least planted the seed, if anything.
- 42:26Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's where he loves it.
- 42:29Yeah. I mean, you look at the numbers,
- 42:30that's that's where he belongs in a lineup.
- 42:32Doesn't matter what city he's in, that's where he needs to be.
- 42:35And that's where they've got him in Philly.
- 42:37So good on the Phillies for leaning into it fully.
- 42:42Speaking of leaning into it, Manny Machado has done just that
- 42:47and has done it enough time to put him at the top of the Padres
- 42:51all time home run leaderboard. Granted, it's only 164 home
- 42:56runs, but I think that's just a tip of the cap to a guy that's,
- 43:05I mean, look, let's let's call spade a spade.
- 43:08This guy has this guy's matured. We, we've talked about on here
- 43:12on more than for on more than one occasion.
- 43:14He's, he's had his ups and downs in his career.
- 43:17But this is a guy that I think a lot of guys in that clubhouse
- 43:22can lean on a lot of guys or a, a, a player that a lot of those
- 43:27guys can come to if they've got questions, if they need, you
- 43:31know, leadership, guidance, advice, whatever, fill in the
- 43:33blank. And this is just I, I think a
- 43:40way to that that we can look at this that marks just how long
- 43:44he's he's been doing it and and been doing it for the Padres.
- 43:47Like he you want to talk about another guy that's not a not
- 43:50exactly a spring chicken. Manny Machado has has, has been
- 43:54sticking it out. And I, I would venture to say
- 43:56the majority of Padres fans are hoping that he can at least be a
- 44:01part of one ring while he's still there under this contract.
- 44:07And one would hope, I mean, they've they've goodness
- 44:10compiled some rosters that I think the front office thought
- 44:15could do it, but has has yet to pan out.
- 44:18This year might be a little different.
- 44:20Time will tell. But 164 home runs?
- 44:24The new Padres record did it in six seasons, and the record that
- 44:30was previously held by Nate Kolbert was held for. 50.
- 44:36Years, 50 years dating all the way back to 1969.
- 44:42So yeah, just a little tip of the cap there to Manny Machado
- 44:46and one final tip of the cap to Keter Montero.
- 44:49CG shutout versus the Rockies. And it wasn't just ACG shutout,
- 44:54it was a Maddox did it. 96 pitches allowed, just three hits
- 44:57and zero and runs, zero walks and five KS.
- 45:02Had not pitched into the 7th in his professional career before
- 45:08this season, but he goes 9 and faces the minimum 27 hitters
- 45:14because the three the three guys that got on all grounded in the
- 45:20double or or part of double plays that followed.
- 45:26And I love that. I mean that you want to talk of
- 45:29patient. That's pitching.
- 45:31That's big time. I, I, I want to say, I mean,
- 45:36this isn't exactly like a groundbreaking take, but I think
- 45:39we're, I think the pendulum is swinging back.
- 45:43I really do. I think it will.
- 45:47Even if it hasn't, even if it hasn't started yet, I think the
- 45:51seed is being planted that, hey, we don't have to have these guys
- 45:57come out and throw 200 miles an hour.
- 46:01What are you over there talking about?
- 46:03This Yankees team is going to make you.
- 46:05Need to stop watching Yankee games while we record because it
- 46:09I. Can't.
- 46:10It ah, it influences your ability to process things
- 46:16rationally. Unbelievable.
- 46:20Stop watching Yankee games while we record.
- 46:24But what I was saying is I think the pendulum, if it has not
- 46:28started to swing back, if it has not started yet, the seeds are
- 46:33being planted and that we have as he continues to look off
- 46:36screen and watch the rest of the Yankees game, you have I I would
- 46:41hope the seeds being planted for in a a shift in approach.
- 46:47We're seeing guys do things. And it's not like we even the
- 46:50guys we talked about Seth Lugo, and I'm not saying Peter Montero
- 46:54is necessarily going to go on and have this long grand career,
- 46:56but we're we're seeing guys do it well, pitch effectively, pick
- 47:03pitch efficiently, oftentimes maybe lacking the the ultra high
- 47:08velocity. So where if it happens enough,
- 47:12and I think that we're getting to that point, you're going to
- 47:14look around and be like, OK, maybe this is like a thing that
- 47:17we can get back to. We don't have to have guys go
- 47:20out and they're going out there throwing 200 miles an hour.
- 47:23Yeah. I, I don't know if that's going
- 47:26to happen, but I would like to think with the, the, we'll call
- 47:31it uptick in success with maybe the lower end velocity guys, I
- 47:38would like to think that maybe that's the direction we're
- 47:40headed. Yeah, I'd hope so.
- 47:43Here's a trivia question from from the Co sister-in-law.
- 47:48It's Wednesday. It's trivia night.
- 47:52Love that you ready for it? No, but yeah.
- 47:56First native New Yorker to manage the Yankees.
- 47:59This is all you, buddy. First native First native New
- 48:04Yorker to manage the Yankees. I feel like Yogi was from I was
- 48:18from New York. Final guess there, there's no
- 48:22multiple choice, huh? It's just straight after.
- 48:24It traditional trivia here. I just don't know if Yogi was
- 48:34from New York. That's that's a good guess,
- 48:40though. Yeah, we'll send it, Nate, says
- 48:43Yogi Berra. But anyway, that's all I really
- 48:46had wanted to wrap up just acknowledging the passing of
- 48:54James Earl Jones, a true legend. I mean, you could just say like
- 49:01across the board, but if you want to get into specific,
- 49:03specifically in in the the the movie world and even more
- 49:08specifically, you want to drill down even further the baseball
- 49:11world. I mean, there was a handful of
- 49:14baseball movies that I think touched reached multiple
- 49:19generations. I mean, some of my favorites
- 49:23include him, Field of Dreams, The Sandlot.
- 49:26I mean, this is one of those guys that you would he his name
- 49:32would trend on Twitter or something.
- 49:34He'd go, you'd have to rush to you'd have to rush to Twitter
- 49:37like, oh, it God is today the day 'cause I mean it.
- 49:40He has been around the block. He had lived a long and a long
- 49:44and happy life is what it sounds like.
- 49:49But sadly, we, we arrived it that day and it's just tough
- 49:54because I mean, this, you want to talk about a legend, this
- 49:56guy. And and it's easy to throw that
- 49:59name around, but I've this was a guy.
- 50:01I mean, we're talking, you want to you want to talk Star Wars.
- 50:04I know that that used to be a big thing with you and as a as a
- 50:08kid. Like Darth Vader, whether you
- 50:10like Star Wars or not, you have to wreck you.
- 50:11You have to understand that like that's, that's one of the
- 50:18biggest movie characters of all time.
- 50:20You know what I mean? Like, and I know he wasn't in
- 50:24the suit walking around, but the man was the voice.
- 50:26And like that's, you know, everyone knows Luke, you're you
- 50:29know, I'm your father. Stuff like that's that's a
- 50:34legend. And man, that that speech, you
- 50:40know, it's in in Field of Dreams.
- 50:44It's it's just stuff that'll always stick with you.
- 50:47That's his voice is like just a our childhood memories in a in a
- 50:54way. So yeah, sad.
- 50:57Definitely sad. He will be missed, but he, I
- 51:03think I, I did see AI saw a tweet acknowledging in the past
- 51:09and it was something to the effect of like, he literally
- 51:13won't go anywhere because he's just going to live on through
- 51:17his work through. That's what's sweet about it,
- 51:21the. Power of his voice, like he like
- 51:23he for as long as we pop in the the movie or, or streaming or
- 51:28whatever we're doing, you're James Earl Jones is going to
- 51:32stay. He's going to stick around and
- 51:33he's going to be you're going to hear that voice and you're going
- 51:36to witness his acting and just this the skill set that he
- 51:42brought to the table, which was like no other.
- 51:46So yeah, he will be missed. And it's a sad day for for
- 51:54baseball movie fans. I know that much.
- 51:57Yeah. You got anything else before we
- 52:00get out of here? Yeah, always.
- 52:03It's funny how we end up always recording.
- 52:06I guess we won't maybe next year, but just another another
- 52:12year gone by and look at it's scary to me how how I don't know
- 52:18like younger generations or social media in general, just
- 52:22kind of made a joke out of it in certain ways and have played
- 52:25around. But like this is a this is a
- 52:29monumental day and and understanding a great law for
- 52:36our country and understanding great sacrifice for our country.
- 52:40This day changed lives and generations and overall just
- 52:47wanna remind everyone that, you know, be extremely grateful for
- 52:52our first responders and our and our people in service.
- 52:57You know what I mean? Like this is that's the ultimate
- 52:59sacrifice in my mind and to do it selflessly for our country.
- 53:04And I pray that like someday they're the unity of of what our
- 53:13country felt on September 12th is is going to be revisited at
- 53:19some point and, and the unity and the much needed togetherness
- 53:24that everyone felt. So yeah, yeah, big day in, in
- 53:32our history, big day. And I know our life as, you
- 53:36know, growing up right down the street from from the Pentagon
- 53:39and like witnessing a lot of that stuff first hand.
- 53:41And, you know, your dad, you know, sacrificing and, you know,
- 53:47doing what he did for his career.
- 53:49Like it's, it's stuff that I wish we could all remember.
- 53:54And it's very strange that we joke about it the way we do or
- 53:59the way people do nowadays. It's kind of disturbing.
- 54:02But yeah, just reminder to appreciate all all the people
- 54:09out there serving for us and keeping our our home safe and
- 54:13our country safe. And that's all that matters to
- 54:17me. So yeah.
- 54:19But outside of that, don't go chasing curveballs.
- 54:22We'll see you back home and you won't have to listen to me
- 54:27echoing in a hotel room much longer.
- 54:29And you won't have to listen to me in a spare guest bedroom with
- 54:36slanted ceilings and decor from what looks like the 80s.
- 54:42Yeah. Anyway, we love you all and as
- 54:44always, looking forward to talking more baseball with you
- 54:46guys soon. Until next time, stay filthy.
