Latest / UNMASKED with Wesley Farnsworth / EP 65 - The Danger of Putting People on Pedestals
Transcript
- 0:00I think one of the quickest ways we get hurt is by expecting
- 0:05people to carry weight that they were never meant to carry.
- 0:11I think we do this so all the time.
- 0:14We put people on pedestals. Our pastors, leaders, authors,
- 0:21speakers, parents, mentors, and sometimes even ourselves.
- 0:28We elevate people so high that we stop seeing them as human.
- 0:32And the problem with pedestals is this.
- 0:36Eventually everyone falls off. Not because they're evil and not
- 0:41because they were trying to deceive anybody, but because
- 0:45they're people. They're human.
- 0:49And when they fall, sometimes our faith falls with them.
- 0:54Our trust falls with them, our expectations fall with them, and
- 0:59I think part of maturity is learning how to admire people
- 1:03without making them responsible for carrying our expectations of
- 1:07perfection. Welcome to Unmask, where we take
- 1:15off the filters and get real about faith, failure and finding
- 1:18freedom. I'm your host, Wesley
- 1:20Farnsworth, a dad, veteran, author, and a man who's learned
- 1:25that God does his best work in the middle of our mess.
- 1:29Each episode will have honest conversations with people who
- 1:31have walked through addiction, pain, or doubt, and with
- 1:35pastors, leaders, and everyday believers who are learning to
- 1:39live and lead authentically. So take a breath, pull up a
- 1:43chair, and let's get real. This is unmasked.
- 1:56See, I don't think most people intentionally put others on
- 1:59pedestals. I think we do it because we're
- 2:02looking for certainty. We want examples, we want
- 2:08leaders, we want people that we can trust.
- 2:13And there's nothing wrong with that.
- 2:16But somewhere along the way, admiration becomes idolization.
- 2:22Respect becomes expectation and before long we stop seeing the
- 2:26person and we only see the role. Pastor, youth leader, mentor,
- 2:34influencer, author, and the role becomes bigger than the humanity
- 2:40underneath it. And the problem with that is
- 2:43that humans were never designed to carry perfection.
- 2:48Not pastors, not ministry leaders, not parents, and not
- 2:53even you. And honestly, I think ministry
- 2:58people feel this deeply because people often relate to the role
- 3:03while forgetting the person the pastor becomes the pastor.
- 3:09Not a husband, not a father, not someone who struggles, not
- 3:14somebody who gets tired. Just the role, the pastor.
- 3:18And that pressure can become crushing because eventually
- 3:22people stop allowing leaders to be human, and leaders stop
- 3:26allowing themselves to be human too.
- 3:28And that is dangerous. Eventually something happens.
- 3:33A leader struggles, a pastor fails, someone disappoints us,
- 3:39and suddenly the pedestal breaks.
- 3:43The pain is often bigger than the situation itself.
- 3:46Because we weren't grieving a person, we were grieving an
- 3:49image. The image of perfection, the
- 3:54image of certainty, the image that we created.
- 3:58Let that sit for a second. Because sometimes we're not
- 4:02grieving who they were. We're grieving who we thought
- 4:05they were, the image that we created.
- 4:13And honestly, I think we do this with the Bible too.
- 4:17Take Moses, for example. When most people think about
- 4:21Moses, they think about the big things that he did.
- 4:25They think about the parting of the Red Sea, the leadership, the
- 4:30faith, the deliverance. We think about all of the
- 4:35miracles, but we don't think about him as a human.
- 4:41We don't think about the insecurities, the fear, the
- 4:45excuses, the anger that he had. We forget that Moses literally
- 4:52argued with God about being the wrong person.
- 4:56We forget that he killed a man. We forget that he doubted that
- 5:01he struggled. Because we like polished heroes.
- 5:07But Scripture doesn't give us polished heroes.
- 5:10It gives us human beings, broken people in a broken world,
- 5:17complicated people, people that God used anyways.
- 5:23And honestly, that should encourage us because when we
- 5:28sanitize biblical characters, we accidentally create an
- 5:33impossible standard. We read about David and we think
- 5:38King, not adulterer, not grieving father, not broken man
- 5:44writing desperate prayers. We think hero, not human, and
- 5:50then we compare ourselves to the edited version and we lose hope.
- 5:55But the Bible never hid people's failures.
- 5:59We do that. God didn't think about that for
- 6:03a second. Because I think the hardest
- 6:08pedestal for us to climb off of sometimes is our own.
- 6:13We don't just put people on there, we put ourselves on there
- 6:18too. Especially men.
- 6:21We create identities around being strong, reliable provider,
- 6:27the one holding everything together.
- 6:30And then we secretly believe we're not allowed to fail, not
- 6:33allowed to struggle, not allowed to need help.
- 6:38And so when weakness shows up, we panic because weakness feels
- 6:43like identity, because weakness feels like the identity
- 6:47collapse. But maybe the problem isn't
- 6:51weakness. Maybe the problem is the
- 6:53pedestal. I think there's a lot of men out
- 6:57there listening prop that are exhausted because they're trying
- 7:02to be unbreakable. They've made an agreement
- 7:07internally. They've told themselves I can't
- 7:11fall apart, I can't need help, I have to hold this together.
- 7:17And that pressure is brutal because you can't keep it up.
- 7:22Eventually, life reminds us that we're all human, we all get
- 7:28tired, we all grieve, we all struggle, we all fail.
- 7:36And if your identity depends on never failing or never falling,
- 7:42life becomes terrifying. I think one reason authentic
- 7:48leaders matter so much is because they remind us that
- 7:52faith and humanity can coexist. You can love God and struggle at
- 7:58the same time. You can lead and grieve.
- 8:03You can serve and still need healing.
- 8:07That matters because people don't need perfect leaders, they
- 8:12need honest ones. And I think that's something the
- 8:16church needs to hear because pastors are not machines.
- 8:22Youth leaders are not machines. Ministry leaders are not
- 8:26machines. They are people.
- 8:29People with marriages, families, stress, grief, temptation,
- 8:35questions. Do I need to go on?
- 8:40And sometimes churches consume leaders while forgetting they're
- 8:44human, and then act shocked when burnout happens or failure
- 8:50happens. That doesn't excuse sin, but it
- 8:54should create some compassion. The deepest danger of pedestals
- 9:01is this. Sometimes people become our
- 9:04faith. Oh, they don't do it
- 9:09intentionally, but practically. Their leadership becomes our
- 9:16stability. Their wisdom becomes our
- 9:20confidence. Their example becomes our
- 9:23anchor. And then when they fail, our
- 9:27spiritual world collapses on itself because the pedestal was
- 9:32held with too much weight on it. Only God was meant to carry that
- 9:38kind of weight. Not pastors, not mentors, not
- 9:43biblical heroes, and definitely not you.
- 9:48So the one thing I love about Scripture is how human everyone
- 9:52feels. Peter doubted.
- 9:56Thomas questioned. Elijah burned out, David
- 10:00grieved. Moses struggled.
- 10:04But God used each and every single one of them anyway.
- 10:09Not after they came became perfect, not after they became
- 10:14perfect, but in the middle of their humanity.
- 10:19Did you hear me there? He didn't wait for them to
- 10:22become perfect to use them. He met them where they were at.
- 10:27And that matters because some of you listening are probably
- 10:31disqualifying yourselves over a normal human struggle.
- 10:36I know I did. And maybe you don't need
- 10:41perfection. Maybe you need permission to be
- 10:45human. I want to stay here for a minute
- 10:51because I think a lot of people listening have impossible
- 10:54expectations for themselves. You expect yourself to always be
- 10:59strong, always faithful, always composed, always growing, And
- 11:06then when you struggle, you feel ashamed because somewhere along
- 11:11the way you climbed onto your own pedestal and now you're
- 11:15exhausted from trying not to fall off.
- 11:20My friend, you are allowed to be human.
- 11:24You are allowed to struggle. You are allowed to need people.
- 11:29You are allowed to fail because failure is not your identity and
- 11:36humanity is not a weakness. Healthy honor looks different.
- 11:47It says I respect you, not I need you to be perfect.
- 11:53It says I appreciate your leadership not my faith depends
- 11:57on you. It says I admire what God has
- 12:01done in your life, not your above being human.
- 12:06That distinction matters because healthy honor creates grace and
- 12:11pedestals create pressure. People, they're going to fail
- 12:18with you. Leaders, I promise you will
- 12:22disappoint you and I promise you that you at some point will
- 12:25disappoint yourself. That's not cynicism, that's
- 12:30humanity. And the goal isn't finding
- 12:35perfect people. The goal is learning to keep
- 12:38people human while keeping God holy.
- 12:44So here's your action step this week.
- 12:47Ask yourself this honestly, who have I placed on a pedestal?
- 12:53Was it a pastor, A leader? A parent?
- 12:57Yourself? And then ask yourself, what
- 13:03weight am I expecting them to carry that only belongs to God?
- 13:09And then sit with that, because freedom begins when people start
- 13:15to become human again. Thanks for joining me today on
