- 0:47So join us as we laugh, groan, and maybe even learn a little
- 0:50something about surviving in the second-half of life.
- 0:53Oh, and one more thing. Hi, I'm Brian.
- 1:06Welcome to Oh and One More Thing podcast.
- 1:08Yo, I'm Rob. Yo, Rob.
- 1:10Wash off sugar. Oh, you know, just over here
- 1:13trying to make it happen one day at a time.
- 1:15Fake it till you make it buddy. Fake it till you make.
- 1:18That's cool. Hey, did you ever watch
- 1:19Scooby-doo as a kid? All the time.
- 1:22I love Scooby-doo so. Do I you know my favorite
- 1:24episode is the one where they're being chased by ghosts.
- 1:26The whole. Episode.
- 1:26Isn't that every episode? Yeah, but then they realized at
- 1:29the end it was just some bad guy with a with a mascot.
- 1:33And the bad guy always goes, you darn meddling kids.
- 1:36Yeah, that was that. Every episode that one the best.
- 1:40And we were back in the day that that TV only had a handful of
- 1:43channels. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:44Now we have a hundreds. And like we still say, there's
- 1:46nothing. But it's true.
- 1:48It's true nothing. You can spend an hour just
- 1:51searching around for something you want to watch.
- 1:53Yeah. And then you've wasted a whole
- 1:55hour. You still have nothing to watch.
- 1:56But it's even harder now because you know, a couple years ago you
- 1:59had cable and you just kind of flip to the guy and go.
- 2:03Now you got 10,000 different streaming services and now you
- 2:06literally like you need to know what streaming services stupid
- 2:09shows on that you want to watch right?
- 2:10It's when it's probably easier for you 'cause you can watch
- 2:12sports. Well, yeah, so, so you got
- 2:14sports. You always fall back and I watch
- 2:16them and I'm like, I don't like sports.
- 2:17We all know that, you know, so that I can't find anything to
- 2:20watch. So I just kind of do the
- 2:21searching. Give up.
- 2:23Walk away. Walk away.
- 2:24I I just default a couple shows like nonstop.
- 2:26There's nothing on Big Bang Theory comes on.
- 2:29Yeah, big thing. Yeah, that's that's it.
- 2:31That's all you need. We pretty much watch that every
- 2:32night. Yeah, me too.
- 2:33Every day, I guess. So Speaking of watching TV from
- 2:36back in the day, yeah, there were some really good TV
- 2:39commercials and jingles that stick in your head to this day
- 2:42like a bad ear worm. Yeah, and why can I remember a
- 2:45song, a commercial from 40 years ago?
- 2:47But like, I don't remember what I did yesterday.
- 2:50I don't think that's necessary your memory, but the old age I'd
- 2:54shake it is. Because, you know, before
- 2:56TikTok, you know, we had TV jingles.
- 2:57So, I mean, I think today, yeah, it's a good time to talk about
- 3:01commercials. Awesome the.
- 3:02Ones that shaped our Saturday mornings and stuck with us for
- 3:04decades. So to all those middle-aged
- 3:07people out there, if you can't remember why you walked into the
- 3:10room, but you can remember these jingles, you are our people.
- 3:15Oh, absolutely. And morning that your worm.
- 3:16Your worms may result from this tour down memory lane.
- 3:21All right, this is cool. All right, here we go.
- 3:23OK, one of the first jingles that comes to mind, for me at
- 3:26least, is Oscar Mayer. Do you remember it?
- 3:29Absolutely my bridge. My baloney has a first name.
- 3:34It's Oscar. My baloney has a second name.
- 3:39It's an AYERI love to eat it every day.
- 3:44And if you ask me why, I'll say, 'cause Oscar Mayer has a way
- 3:50with biology and a. Oh my gosh that is so cute, but
- 3:56I remember every word of that to this day.
- 3:58Every word. I still can picture the kids
- 3:59singing it, sitting there eating the sandwich, kicking his feet.
- 4:02Fishing at the end of the day, fishing.
- 4:03Yes, curly hair guy. Yes.
- 4:05Oh, that's so. Funny.
- 4:06It's so funny, but that one just sticks in your head, right?
- 4:09This effective 1974 Jingle outlasted its campaign for Oscar
- 4:13Mayer. Baloney.
- 4:14If you say my baloney has the first name to someone who
- 4:17watched the television in the 70s or the 80s, they may not be
- 4:21able to resist responding with it's.
- 4:23Oscar, you have to. The famous Jingle did more than
- 4:29teach the world how to spell Bologna.
- 4:32It made Oscar Mayer the first name American consumers
- 4:35associated with the lunch meat for decades.
- 4:37C0L 0GN. A So I always have a question if
- 4:41it's B0L 0GN A why do we say Bologna?
- 4:44It's Bologna. It's well, it looks like.
- 4:47Bologna, right? Yeah, it's funny.
- 4:50We'll still go to the deli and every once in a while with ham
- 4:53and Turkey and I'll say, you know, give me half pound of
- 4:55Bologna and I always get confused when they don't go grab
- 4:58the Oscar Mayer package and start slice it.
- 4:59It's like I. Guess what you're expecting?
- 5:01It's Oscar Mayer. It's.
- 5:02Like Black Label Bologna. I'm like, oh, this is like,
- 5:05good. Oh, but that was that's one of
- 5:08my favorites. Yeah, I think that's good.
- 5:10How about this one? I don't want to grow up.
- 5:13I'm a Toys-R-Us kid. That's awesome.
- 5:15That's all I remember. You remember the rest of it.
- 5:18I, I if you sing it to me. I don't want to grow up.
- 5:22I'm a Toys-R-Us kid. They got a million toys at
- 5:25Toys-R-Us. That I can play with.
- 5:26OK, so I'll come back now. Yep, that's all that works.
- 5:28Really tall giraffe. Yep.
- 5:30The commercial wasn't at the end.
- 5:31They're walking down the street at the sunset, holding the
- 5:33little kids hand. Yeah.
- 5:34You know, the commercial debuted back in 1982 and feature the
- 5:38Jingle sung by children. Yeah, of the commercial, which
- 5:41became a staple for the brand, featured very creations and
- 5:44updates over the years, but couldn't stop a company from
- 5:46filing Chapter 13 and closing all of its stores in 2018.
- 5:50I know I can't. Believe that was.
- 5:51I can't believe that was seven years ago, 2018.
- 5:53You know they're back, right? Toys R Us is back, yes.
- 5:56No, I did not know. That they're an online retailer
- 5:58now. Obviously I would have written
- 5:59that in here if I. Did that right?
- 6:01Yeah, they're online retailer and they are looking at opening
- 6:04up a couple of brick and mortar stores again for the holidays.
- 6:06That's crazy, right? I just remember always the
- 6:08Toys-R-Us on 494. Yeah.
- 6:10And pen and it was always right there.
- 6:13Visual. Well, you can see it the whole
- 6:14time, drive by it and you know, empty.
- 6:16Yeah. I used to go there when I
- 6:17couldn't find out my Nintendo games anywhere else.
- 6:19I go to Toys-R-Us because they had them in stock.
- 6:22They always had them. Yeah, they cost more than
- 6:23anywhere else, but they had them in stock.
- 6:25Yeah, yeah. You video, kid, You all right?
- 6:28OK, here's another good one. Give me a break, Give me a
- 6:30break. Can you bring the product?
- 6:32Break me off piece of that Kit Kat bar.
- 6:34Of course, Bar 1. 2124 Give me a break.
- 6:36Give. Me a break.
- 6:42Break me off a piece of that, give me a break, Give me a
- 6:47break. Break me off a piece of that
- 6:49kit. Can't that John Christmas Day is
- 6:52going to make your day. And whenever you go here, the
- 6:55people say give me a break, give me a break.
- 7:05Oh my God, did you hear all the hip hop in that it's.
- 7:07Amazing, right? It was like killer 80s hip.
- 7:10Right. And I didn't realize there were
- 7:11words besides give me a break, give me a break.
- 7:14He's like Kit Kat part. There's like like one line of
- 7:16actual chorus. And if you would again.
- 7:18Watch the commercial. I mean, they are doing break
- 7:20dancing and they do all kinds of fun things.
- 7:22It's. Really, really cool.
- 7:24All that is so funny. That's probably my wife's
- 7:26favorite candy bar. Totally mine.
- 7:29Totally my favorite candy bar. Yeah.
- 7:31The catchy slogan, also known as the Give Me a Break Jingle, has
- 7:35been the official slogan for Kit Kat in the US since 1986 and is
- 7:40a well known part of American culture.
- 7:42The slogan suggests a dual meeting for break as a pause
- 7:46from the work and the literal break of the chocolate bar
- 7:49itself. The catchy tune was initially
- 7:52intended to be a throwaway song, but became a massive hit after
- 7:56winning a focus group testings in 1986, significantly boosting
- 8:01the brand's popularity. The Jingle became an ear worm
- 8:04deeply embedded in American pop culture and is considered one of
- 8:08the most effective confectionery advertising campaigns.
- 8:11Its success led to a significant increase in demand, requiring
- 8:16the construction of a new Kit Kat factory.
- 8:18They. Had to build a new factory
- 8:20because of the song they. Had to build a new factory
- 8:22'cause it was that catchy. Oh my gosh.
- 8:24I mean, that's amazing. Right.
- 8:25Oh, absolutely. That's what.
- 8:26Advertising can do for you, right?
- 8:27But I remember when I eat a Kit Kat Par and I know my kids get
- 8:31nuts over this, they get so upset.
- 8:33I will not break it apart. I will eat it just in one big.
- 8:36Chunk, you can't. You're eating it wrong.
- 8:38What are you doing? I'm told.
- 8:39All the time. But I'm like, I will not form 2
- 8:42consensus. I will.
- 8:43I'm gonna be my own person. You can't make me listen to the
- 8:45man. I'm doing my own thing.
- 8:47Bite that thing two sticks at a time.
- 8:50Well, that's funny. That's kind of the fun part.
- 8:51Those who break it apart, no. It can be what it melts in your
- 8:56hand. Do you stray from the original,
- 8:57or do you find other flavors you like?
- 8:59I don't typically stray from the original flavor.
- 9:02OK, I'm sure they make a peanut butter one cuz you know our last
- 9:04well our last episode we talked a lot about peanut butter.
- 9:06We. Did talk about peanut butter
- 9:08have to make a peanut? Let's look.
- 9:09For one, I will. I know they make a white
- 9:10chocolate one. I have seen that.
- 9:11Yep, always Easter. Yeah, yeah.
- 9:13Easter. Easter.
- 9:14Easter. Yeah.
- 9:15OK, so here we are. You know what time it is, right?
- 9:18What time is it? It's the spring green time.
- 9:22It is time for the spring green minute and this time we're going
- 9:24to talk about dormant turf. What I know, right?
- 9:28So last week we talked a little bit about overseeding and we are
- 9:31in October now and it's a little late to seed, but we also talked
- 9:34a little bit about dormant turf. So I thought we talked a little
- 9:36bit more about that kind of what that means and what it does for
- 9:38your yard. So not a bad thing.
- 9:41So as we get into the colder weather, the lawn just basically
- 9:44just goes to sleep more. Or less just like me.
- 9:47Just like you just gets tired and just goes to sleep.
- 9:50I thought that was age. Nope, turns brown.
- 9:52It's kind of hangs out and goes dormant for the winter and then
- 9:54as soon as that frost comes out of the ground and the warms up
- 9:57again in the spring, it'll pop back to life.
- 9:58So that's dormant turf. That's dormant turf, OK.
- 10:02The key with dormant turf is you really don't want to do a lot to
- 10:05it. So this is more from coming out
- 10:07of the spring. If you have a heavy snow and
- 10:09especially around your driveway and sidewalk where the snow gets
- 10:12really matted down, you get what's called snow mold and the
- 10:15grass looks like it's got almost like spider webs and mushy in
- 10:18it. And why not?
- 10:19People want to get out there right away and rake it up and
- 10:20fluff it up. You're going to RIP up your
- 10:22grass because it's basically the grass is laying there just
- 10:25hanging out. The the root system isn't
- 10:27active, so it's just kind of laying there and you start
- 10:29raking it. You're going to RIP it up and
- 10:31you're going to strip up all your grass.
- 10:32There's nothing left. OK, good to know.
- 10:35Don't rake my grass in the spring.
- 10:36Yeah, you can rake it once it starts to grow.
- 10:38Well, yes, you can rake once it starts to grow, it turns green
- 10:41and get about a mole and then you start to rake it.
- 10:43That's fine. But other than that dormant
- 10:45turf, just kind of leave it alone, let it be dormant.
- 10:47Awesome. All right, Good tip.
- 10:49All right. All right, so how about this
- 10:53one? Sometimes you feel like a nut.
- 10:55That's Almond Joy in Mounds candy bars, yes.
- 10:58And sometimes you don't. I love those candy bars.
- 11:02Again, sounds like coconut you. No, it's delicious.
- 11:05I'm. Not a coconut fan?
- 11:06Should we listen to the Jingle? I want to hear it.
- 11:08Sometimes you feel like a nut, sometimes you don't.
- 11:13I'm enjoys that. Nuts.
- 11:14Mounds don't. Sometimes you feel like a nut,
- 11:26sometimes you don't. Sometimes you don't.
- 11:33All right. I like the yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 11:38I love that, just brings so much joy.
- 11:40It does, even though I can't stand those.
- 11:41I like the commercial. I love the commercial and I love
- 11:43the candy bars. So the iconic Almond Joy and
- 11:46Mounds Jingle. Sometimes you feel like a nut,
- 11:47sometimes you don't. The television commercial first
- 11:51aired in January of 1997. Oh, so pretty early pretty.
- 11:55Early Yeah, the Peter Paul Candy Company used the Jingle to hide
- 11:57the the difference between Almond Joy, which contains nuts,
- 12:00and Mounds, which does not. OK now as a kid again. 1977 so I
- 12:04was 6. You liked coconut then?
- 12:07No, I hated it, but I could never, I could never figure out
- 12:10the difference. Like I couldn't at six.
- 12:12I couldn't comprehend the words of the Jingle.
- 12:14Sure. And I couldn't.
- 12:15Like, I what's the difference? The same darn candy bar.
- 12:18I know. I understand that now.
- 12:19I'm an adult. I get it now.
- 12:20But back when I was 6 I'm like, I don't get it.
- 12:23OK, well you should have ate them.
- 12:27And me, Maybe I'd like coconut. So.
- 12:32So while the Jingle was used in commercials throughout the 1970s
- 12:34and beyond, the visual style of the ads shifted.
- 12:37By 2010, the commercials began showcasing palm trees, coconuts
- 12:40and tropical settings, moving away from the earlier nutty
- 12:43behavior concept. So yeah, if you do watch that
- 12:46old one, like online on YouTube, yeah, they're like wackadoos.
- 12:49They're wackadoos are dancing on the ceiling.
- 12:51They're like lift. There's there's a weight lifter
- 12:53that's lifting up. I think people I don't, I don't
- 12:55know, it's really weird, Yeah. It's odd.
- 12:57It's very funny. I like the commercial and I
- 13:00remember it playing on TV when I was young.
- 13:02Oh, yeah, all the time. Yeah.
- 13:03It's amazing to me, though, how these commercials, they're just
- 13:05so embedded in their memories. I mean, they're a part of our
- 13:07life, right? I mean, back then, when you had
- 13:09four channels, you didn't have a DVR, You didn't have, you didn't
- 13:12skip to everything. Like you sat there and watched
- 13:14the stupid commercials if you weren't going to the bathroom or
- 13:15getting the snack. Right, you had to.
- 13:17You couldn't pause or go through.
- 13:19Yeah, and there weren't that many national commercials.
- 13:21They were just a handful. So they played the same ones
- 13:23over and over and over. Well, I don't think that's any
- 13:25different than today about playing the same commercial over
- 13:27and over, especially in a streaming service.
- 13:29That's when they would pay for one commercial and you see it
- 13:31three times in a row. Yeah.
- 13:32I mean, come on, where's the variety?
- 13:35Yeah, that's a little different, but it's a.
- 13:36Little different I know I'm going on out of.
- 13:38LA I'm going to tangent, but yeah, but I agree.
- 13:40Yeah, how about an old one? Here's a really old one.
- 13:43For you? Aren't these all?
- 13:44Old. OK, he's older, like from the
- 13:4650s. Oh, OK.
- 13:48How about plop, plop, fizz, fizz?
- 13:50Oh, what a relief. Do you know what product it?
- 13:52Is I do that is Alka Seltzer? Awesome.
- 13:55Something good? Something I still use to the
- 13:57state every once in a while. Oh, what a relief it is.
- 13:59Fast, fast, fast. Right, the fast, fast, fast
- 14:01part. That's there was the new
- 14:03iteration of the later times. When it first came out in the
- 14:0650s, it was different. OK, this is an interesting one.
- 14:08It's of course from our childhood, but the Jingle dates
- 14:12back to 1950. And for those of us middle-aged,
- 14:16the Alka Seltzer Plop Plop Fizz TV commercial from the 1970s is
- 14:20what we recognize as one of the most iconic advertisements in
- 14:24American pop culture history. Isn't this the one with the the
- 14:26like the older guy like in bed and just like right and laying
- 14:30there in the the glides. Blop, blop.
- 14:32Yeah. Yeah, OK.
- 14:32But when it was created first in the 50s, it was a little
- 14:35character guy who actually had an Alka Seltzer hat.
- 14:39It was more of like a puppeteer type of thing.
- 14:40OK, kind of creepy, but if you go to YouTube you can find them
- 14:43and it's kind of an he sings in a little high little screechy
- 14:46voice. Blop blop.
- 14:47Fizz, fizz. OK.
- 14:49You know, yeah. And then the other ones was more
- 14:51about what you ate OK that night and you needed the Alka seltzer
- 14:54to feel better. I think in the 50s they have a
- 14:57lot more mascots because I picture like any ads from them.
- 14:59They always had to advertise in the middle of game shows.
- 15:02Yes. So they had to have some sort of
- 15:04mascot or icon. Advertiser paid for the game.
- 15:06Yeah, exactly. That whole half hour, they had
- 15:08the little thing on their counter, on the host counter.
- 15:10That's cool. I want one of those.
- 15:11Yeah, right. It was cute.
- 15:13But the the stick to your brain Jingle and instructive visuals
- 15:17have become ingrained in popular culture.
- 15:20Memorable images of two round white tablets dropping into a
- 15:23glass of water and fizzing up set the stage for an amazing
- 15:28sales increase in Alka Seltzer tablets.
- 15:31Do you remember the most famous Alka seltzer promo?
- 15:35What is it, Rob? David Letterman made a suit of
- 15:39Alka Seltzer tablets. No.
- 15:41And jumped into a tank on a on a show.
- 15:43I'm I'm late. I didn't see that.
- 15:44I never saw that. OK, I'm.
- 15:45Totally looking that up. OK, something else you can look
- 15:47up on YouTube. Yeah, he made an Alka seltzer
- 15:49suit and jumped into a VAT of water on his late his original
- 15:52NBC late night show. Sure.
- 15:53From way back, yeah, yes. Got it.
- 15:55And it just, it's just, it's stupid.
- 15:57It's eat this stupid. Trip, but it's totally what you
- 15:59should do. It was hilarious.
- 16:00They do. That stuff now all the time of
- 16:02like Mentos, right? Exactly.
- 16:05How about I'm stuck on Band-Aid brand because Band-Aid stuck on
- 16:10me. I love that.
- 16:11Right, I remember that one too. Another iconic Jingle.
- 16:14Right again, here we are. Yep.
- 16:16So, fun fact, the Jingle was actually written by Barry
- 16:19Manilow in 1971. It was not.
- 16:22OK. Well, first of all, did you do
- 16:24the research? OK, so it was all right.
- 16:28So very mad. Alone 71 along with.
- 16:30Plus, remember, yeah, I believe everything I read on.
- 16:32The Internet, it's true, yes. If it's online, it is, and
- 16:35everyone listening to this should just believe me.
- 16:36Absolutely, along with lyricist Donald B Wood and a debuted in a
- 16:40commercial featuring John Travolta and Terry Garr.
- 16:42I did not know that either. Well, that's what YouTube said.
- 16:44OK, I'm going to do some research after this and was part
- 16:48of a successful advertising campaign that won a Cleo award.
- 16:51And the Cleo is the annual award that recognizes innovation and
- 16:54creative excellence in advertising, design and
- 16:56communication. It's the It's the Emmy and the
- 16:58Oscar of the advertising world. That is correct actually, yes.
- 17:01I do know things. You do know things.
- 17:03Yeah. I am stuck on banded brands.
- 17:06The banded stuck on me. All right.
- 17:08Do you remember this one? This might be a little harder.
- 17:11I'd like to teach the world to sing in perfect harmony.
- 17:15On a hillside, a bunch of hip dippies holding holding a bottle
- 17:20of Coke. It's for.
- 17:22Coke, I do remember that. You know what, they actually
- 17:24brought that one back a couple years ago.
- 17:25They they refreshed it. It was.
- 17:27They actually made it like a Super Bowl commercial.
- 17:29Oh, sure, like 3-4 years ago. Sure.
- 17:31That's kind of cool. Yeah.
- 17:31So it was a pop song originally known as True Love and Apple
- 17:35Pie. Really.
- 17:36Coke adjusted some of the words and added by The World of Coke
- 17:41in 1971 and it became a huge hit for Coke and it became an actual
- 17:45released single I had. No idea there was, it was an
- 17:48actual song before that and they just made it their own.
- 17:50Yeah, it was. You can actually find it.
- 17:52It's a little bit. It's very similar, obviously,
- 17:54but, you know, by the world of Coke, right?
- 17:56And it will. You know, it was dramatized by
- 17:58the show Mad Men, where Don Draper, the advertising
- 18:01executive, wrote and created the Jingle, and it was prominently
- 18:05featured on the part of the series.
- 18:06I do remember that now. I love mad.
- 18:08Men it was anywhere at the end of the.
- 18:10Series. Yeah, you're right.
- 18:11I remember that now. Oh, funny.
- 18:13So I had a question when I was writing this.
- 18:15I'd like to buy the World of Coke song.
- 18:17Did it ever make the music charts?
- 18:21I, I, I without knowing, I guess I would say it probably did.
- 18:25So I looked it up, OK, and no, So no, the original Coca-Cola
- 18:29Jingle itself didn't OK make it on the top charts, but they did
- 18:34adjust the words a little bit. I'd like to teach the world to
- 18:37sing in perfect harmony. And that did actually go to
- 18:40number one in the UK and #7 in the US in 1970.
- 18:43Two, I think that's what I remember then.
- 18:45OK, OK, now it makes sense. OK, got you.
- 18:47The song's popularity grew after the popular TV commercial, so
- 18:52leading to the development of the full length song which was
- 18:55recorded by the Hillside Singers and the New Seekers, with the
- 19:00New Seekers version becoming the massive hit.
- 19:02OK, I I get that that's kind of the same thing as like the like
- 19:06the friends Jingle, right? Like they wrote this the Jingle,
- 19:08but then they actually. Released it as they released it
- 19:10as an actual song and ma'am who is it by?
- 19:12Ah. Trivia.
- 19:16It's the Rembrandt, that's right.
- 19:18Oh my gosh, take flashbacks for a trivia episode where I suck.
- 19:23OK, but you know. But wait, wait, who won that
- 19:25trivia contest? Yeah, you did.
- 19:27Whatever. So here's my issue.
- 19:29And I I, I realized this after the fact.
- 19:30I had this conversation multiple times since then because it
- 19:33grinds on me that I lost that to you.
- 19:35I'm so good at bar trivia because I have multiple choice
- 19:37options. So that's what we should have
- 19:39done, yes. So we should have added multiple
- 19:40choice and I didn't think of it. You didn't tell.
- 19:43I didn't either, so. I'm helping you after the fact,
- 19:49yeah. So we will do another trivia
- 19:51podcast, I promise. And we'll do a little bit better
- 19:53this time. Yeah, we'll have maybe we'll
- 19:55have more people on. Oh, that.
- 19:56'D be nice. Maybe we could find a?
- 19:57Host, oh, making our wives. Oh my gosh, wouldn't that be
- 20:00fun? Yeah, they could host us and we
- 20:02could have a buzzing buzzer. Yeah, I like this idea.
- 20:05All right. So honey, I'm committing you
- 20:07now. You're going to be on a podcast,
- 20:08like it or not. Next year.
- 20:10Next year. All right.
- 20:12OK. So I also remember there are
- 20:13some competitive jingles in the fast food area too.
- 20:16Yeah, I know. Do you remember them?
- 20:17Funny, I think I remember all of them.
- 20:19I thought you didn't remember the one that I liked the best.
- 20:22Which one did you like the best? Hold the Pickles, hold the
- 20:25lettuce. Special orders don't upset us.
- 20:27All we ask is that you let us serve it your way.
- 20:29OK, you're right. I don't remember that one, but.
- 20:33I remember. Before I remember the
- 20:34conversation. It's for Burger.
- 20:36King. Burger King.
- 20:36No, it didn't. I know somebody that worked
- 20:39there when he was a kid. Well, I was a little bit more
- 20:41than a kid, but yes, it was me, yes.
- 20:44It was you. OK, so is that is that why you
- 20:46know the thought? Maybe.
- 20:47OK. When he but when I went, Oh my
- 20:50gosh, went on to research that and it's all these gospel ladies
- 20:54singing this song and I'm like, that is not what I remember.
- 20:58I remember a much more upbeat version of it.
- 21:00OK, so the song premiered or the song came out when you started
- 21:04working there, right? No, I was not working there in
- 21:051974. Came out 74.
- 21:09I was working there in in maybe 1984.
- 21:12There you go. All right.
- 21:13OK, so the hold the Pickles, hold the lettuce came out in 74.
- 21:16It's part of Burger King's Habit Your Way campaign, which is
- 21:19funny. It's still that's still their
- 21:20campaign today. It's still the same campaign,
- 21:22but they've changed it up a bit. Yeah, So the campaign emphasized
- 21:25customer customization with the folders like you just saying
- 21:28hold all the Pickles, hold the lettuce.
- 21:29Special orders so upset us. This iconic slogan and
- 21:33accompanying Jingle helped Burger King differentiate itself
- 21:35from competitors by highlighting its commitment to making burgers
- 21:38according to the individual customer preferences.
- 21:41So that was a thing, you know, on your menu board because I
- 21:43was, I was taking the orders. You could actually choose all
- 21:46the things they wanted on there individually, and then you'd
- 21:49make them. Right, nice.
- 21:50So the upbeat and from the tone of the Jingle combined with this
- 21:52melody helped it become easily recognizable and remembered.
- 21:55Unless you're like me and had no idea, the Habit Your Way slogan
- 21:59with this Jingle became a defining part of Burger King's
- 22:01brand identity for many years and was a key differentiator
- 22:03against rivals like McDonald's at the time.
- 22:05Yep, and then overtime of course we know the Jingle changed to be
- 22:08at BK. Have it your way you rule.
- 22:13I sing that every day at work. Do you really?
- 22:16So we do something, do something good, I'll walk away.
- 22:18Go BK, have it your way. You rule.
- 22:23You're so lame. I'm so I love it.
- 22:26I am so lame. But Speaking of McDonald's, yes,
- 22:29they will not be outdone. They had a Jingle too.
- 22:32You remember what? It was that one.
- 22:34I know you do. I guess they'll sing it without
- 22:35even looking at the lyrics. You go.
- 22:37To all bees Patty special sauce lettuce, cheese, Pickles, onions
- 22:40on the sesame seed but. And that came out also in 1970.
- 22:44Really. So they were competing against,
- 22:46of course, we all know that. Yeah.
- 22:48Which continues with well, you just said it.
- 22:51Pickles, onions on sesame seeds bun.
- 22:52The Jingle became well known culture reference and was even
- 22:56used in the later McDonald's promotions, sometimes with a
- 22:59challenge for customers to recite the entire slogan quickly
- 23:03for free Big Mac. I remember that.
- 23:06I remember that. I remember that campaign and I
- 23:08don't think it lasted very long, did it?
- 23:10No, I think they went out of business.
- 23:11Why? I mean, I'm sorry we're giving
- 23:14away free shit for just singing a song.
- 23:16I mean, come on, we wouldn't memorize the song, right?
- 23:19Right. Yeah.
- 23:20So, yeah, I remember this. Although that spot only ran for
- 23:22a year and a half, the Jingle has endured in pop culture to
- 23:25this day, which is probably why I remember it right at the time.
- 23:29The sensation even had some franchises offering free Big
- 23:32Macs during the campaign. See, there you go, offering free
- 23:34Big Macs during the campaign run to any customer who could recite
- 23:37the phrase within the specific specified time, causing some New
- 23:40York locations to run out of hamburger buns.
- 23:43So we know why they stopped doing it?
- 23:45Well, yeah. I mean, you can only give away
- 23:47free stuff for so long. That's right, come back to
- 23:49roost. So I got one more.
- 23:51It's probably more of a not as much as the did you know as much
- 23:54of A do you remember OK, the Frito Bandito.
- 23:58The Frito Bandito debuted in late 1960 as a mascot for the
- 24:02Frito Lay popular corn chips snack Fritos.
- 24:05Fritos had a mascot. Fritos had a mascot totally
- 24:07done. It's a little bit, maybe
- 24:08slightly before your time, OK? But the sombrero wearing,
- 24:12twirled mustache character seemed to delight fans as he
- 24:15cropped up in commercials with his own theme song sung to the
- 24:19tune of a traditional Spanish folk song, Celito Lindo, and a
- 24:26trademark trademark accent voiced by veteran actor Mel
- 24:29Blanc, famous for voicing various Warner Brothers
- 24:33characters including Bugs Bunny. I think I see where this is
- 24:35going, but OK, keep going, yeah. I know, right?
- 24:38The Frito Bandido spoke broken English and robbed people of
- 24:42their Fritos corn chips, which was a reference to the Mexican
- 24:45bandit stereotype in Western movies.
- 24:48The Frito Bandido first aired in 1967 and was later banned in
- 24:531971 for its racist nature. You think four years?
- 24:59Figure that out. You still want to hear it,
- 25:01right? Absolutely.
- 25:02OK. I heard you want to be a Frito
- 25:04Bandido like me. You do.
- 25:06Then you must sing the Bandido song.
- 25:09Let's sing together. You just follow the bouncing
- 25:12Fritos corn chips bag. I am the Frito Bandido.
- 25:21I like Fritos corn chips. I love them.
- 25:23I do. I want Fritos corn chips.
- 25:26I'll get them from you. I, I, I, oh, I am the Frito
- 25:33Bandito. Give me Fritos corn chips and
- 25:37I'll be your friend. The Frito Bandito.
- 25:39You must not offend. Now, boys and girls, you are
- 25:43Frito Banditos too. You sing the Frito Bandito song
- 25:47and you look for crunchy Fritos corn chips.
- 25:51That's nice. Munch, munch, munch punch.
- 25:55Oh my gosh, is that ever a racist?
- 25:58I see why I got banned. I.
- 26:00Cannot believe that made it to the air even in the late 60s.
- 26:03I That's unbelievable. I can't believe why it made it
- 26:06on air. I mean, it's a cute little
- 26:08character. Sure, sure.
- 26:09And and and the voice just hearing it.
- 26:11That's Mel Blanc, right? He just Bugs Bunny.
- 26:14But that's Speedy Gonzales like that if you go watch a Speedy
- 26:16Gonzales cartoon. I never even thought about that.
- 26:18Speedy Gonzales, it's exactly the same.
- 26:21Exactly who it is. Oh, I love it more.
- 26:22Oh my gosh. However, you know I still like
- 26:26to sing the song. Every time I eat Fritos, I'll
- 26:29start singing. I I I I am a Frito bandito.
- 26:34Not a racist. Not a racist.
- 26:37Wow. But I do like to sing Frito
- 26:38Bandito. That is hilarious.
- 26:40All right, so a couple more not going to go into deep big detail
- 26:44on, but I I think it's couple more that everybody would know
- 26:45as soon as you sing them. Yeah, 5, $5. $5 footlong.
- 26:52Come on. Everybody knows that Subway.
- 26:55Right Subway, OH. My God, that that prom what
- 26:57lasted forever? Yeah, I know.
- 26:59It's still occasionally on TV. No, no, it's like 7-7 dollars.
- 27:03$7.00 footlong. Inflation, yeah.
- 27:08How about they're magically delicious?
- 27:10Oh, absolutely. This goes back to our last
- 27:13episode about breakfast cereal. Yeah, but it didn't make your
- 27:15poop pink. As far as I know.
- 27:20But you couldn't have a cereal without a mascot and a song and
- 27:22go with it. That's right, going up in the
- 27:2480s, you had to. OK, this next one is real.
- 27:26The lyrics are really, really hard.
- 27:29OK, I'll put my thinking cap on. Meow, meow, meow, meow, meow,
- 27:31meow, meow, meow, meow, meow. What is that for again?
- 27:37Gee, I wonder. Oh yeah, Meow Mix.
- 27:41I do remember those commercials are cute though.
- 27:43They were cute. Little singing cat.
- 27:44Yeah, and. I think it had a little bouncing
- 27:45ball that followed the meow, right?
- 27:47Yeah, now you're a huge Office fan too, right?
- 27:50Obviously huge office fan. You know, a theme song that came
- 27:54from the office. I don't know.
- 27:56I want my baby back, baby back, baby back.
- 27:58That came from the office. No, it came from Chili's but.
- 28:01I know. Gosh, come on.
- 28:03But it was all the office. It came from Chili's baby back
- 28:06ribs. That's right.
- 28:07That's right. How about this one?
- 28:10The best part of waking up is Folgers in your cup.
- 28:16I remember that one. It was always tearjerker type
- 28:18type commercials. Always.
- 28:20There's always Dad coming home from a long trip and, yeah,
- 28:24driving the semi in the winter that went into the ditch or no,
- 28:27That's a country song by Alabama, Yeah.
- 28:28That's not that's not this. Song, but they're always sad.
- 28:33I know you like the next one. OK, clap on, slap off the
- 28:38Clapper. The copper.
- 28:40What is it for? It's for.
- 28:42It's for your light. Switch.
- 28:43It's for the Clapper. Yeah, and funny, the Clapper
- 28:47always reminds me of the I've fallen.
- 28:50I can't get up late. It does, doesn't it 2.
- 28:52Totally different commercials, but I still hear it going.
- 28:55I've fallen and I can't get up. I love it when you imitate.
- 29:03I know, right? How about where's the beef?
- 29:05Where's the beef? It wasn't a Jingle as much as it
- 29:08was Who's lady. Who's it for Wendy's?
- 29:11There you go. Thank you.
- 29:13That was Clara with her name. Clara, Clara, Clara, where's the
- 29:16beef? Clara, where's the?
- 29:17Beef. How about cha cha cha chia?
- 29:21Chia, what about that for? Have you ever had a Chia pet?
- 29:24I have and they suck. Do they?
- 29:27Well, I probably didn't do it right.
- 29:28So I would like to get the Bob Ross Chia pet.
- 29:32Sure, sure, sure, sure. So his hair can keep growing.
- 29:35Right. They still that's it's a
- 29:37Christmas thing. I guarantee it's middle of
- 29:38October for sure within the next two or three weeks, there will
- 29:41be Chia Pet commercials on the air.
- 29:42You don't know that I said it out loud.
- 29:43My kids are probably gonna get it for me.
- 29:45Probably yeah. See, you curse yourself.
- 29:47But what? What's the new one trendy this
- 29:48year? It's gonna be.
- 29:49It can be like AK pop character or Taylor Swift or.
- 29:53That'd be funny. Taylor Swift on.
- 29:56AI did in Mandalorian a couple years ago.
- 29:58Or did they really baby the Grogu?
- 30:00OK. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 30:01They're very trendy. Well, I think that's it for now.
- 30:04That's all we've got that. Was pretty good though.
- 30:06It was good, I enjoyed it. It's fun.
- 30:08Memory Lane. I really like the racist Frito
- 30:10Bandido song. That was the best.
- 30:12You just calm down now, Calm down now.
- 30:14I think some of these were great and the memories they brought
- 30:17back, I love it. Yeah, fun.
