- 0:01SPEAKER_00: Welcome to everyone who's critics.
- 0:07SPEAKER_00: Tells us why critics got it wrong.
- 0:09SPEAKER_00: I'm your host, Janet Code.
- 0:11SPEAKER_00: Formerly pretentious film school student.
- 0:13SPEAKER_00: Ten years later sees the error of his ways.
- 0:18SPEAKER_00: It's written for the fourth series, The Comedy Central's Roast Battle.
- 0:21SPEAKER_00: Eric Hila.
- 0:23SPEAKER_00: Welcome.
- 0:24SPEAKER_00: How's it going?
- 0:25SPEAKER_03: I'm doing okay.
- 0:28SPEAKER_03: Just sipping coffee, trying to wake up.
- 0:31SPEAKER_03: I mean, I am awake, but yeah.
- 0:33SPEAKER_00: What time is it?
- 0:34SPEAKER_00: Oh, well.
- 0:35SPEAKER_00: It's like it's noon here.
- 0:37SPEAKER_03: It's midday.
- 0:38SPEAKER_03: But to me it's mid morning.
- 0:41SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 0:41SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 0:43SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I'm the same.
- 0:45SPEAKER_00: Even it's five o'clock now and I've I've been awake for hours.
- 0:48SPEAKER_00: I'm still like half asleep.
- 0:49SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 0:49SPEAKER_00: It's weird.
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: It's also the weather here.
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: Like, how's the weather there at the moment?
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: Because it's just unbearable here at the moment.
- 0:56SPEAKER_03: It's painfully hot.
- 0:57SPEAKER_03: Like I wanted to go for a run the other day and I was like, oh, I think I'll actually die.
- 1:02SPEAKER_03: Like, I'll pass out.
- 1:03SPEAKER_03: I've been very lucky that my friend from high school, um, who's still who's living here during the pandemic as well, has a pool in her backyard.
- 1:12SPEAKER_03: So I've been abusing that.
- 1:16SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: How long have you been back for?
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: Uh since March.
- 1:21SPEAKER_03: Yeah, since March.
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: I originally met you at l in uh London.
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: So you're like obviously you've been in London for a while.
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: Um, yeah, so you're doing like stand-up and everything there.
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:33SPEAKER_03: Um yeah.
- 1:38SPEAKER_03: Just living, living.
- 1:40SPEAKER_03: I I think when you met me, I was like in this horrible house with cockroaches and mice.
- 1:45SPEAKER_03: So you saw me at my worst.
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: Oh.
- 1:49SPEAKER_03: But also, like, you were opening for Jabuki Young White, so it was a weird thing, yeah, to do like one of the things that was like, oh, this is like a dream, this is one of my dreams, and then to go home and be like, this is my hell.
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: I mean, like, that's that's London living in the world.
- 2:06SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I think so.
- 2:07SPEAKER_03: I think so.
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: I I just moved out of a place that had mice as well.
- 2:13SPEAKER_00: Um, so you've come on today to talk about the movie Norbit, which I I asked you to come on and do because you were talking about it on Twitter so much, and I was like, I have to have you on to talk about this.
- 2:25SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I I think I even changed my name on it to Norbit Superfan for a while.
- 2:30SPEAKER_03: Um yeah, no, I it it's kind it's half ironic, half real, because I do enjoy the movie.
- 2:38SPEAKER_00: So uh what was your history with it then?
- 2:41SPEAKER_03: Well, I weirdly uh I saw it in in the cinemas with my parents and at like some like five dollar like a real cheap movie theater here.
- 2:52SPEAKER_03: And I do I do vividly remember my mom covering like my eyes like during some parts because I I was that young.
- 2:59SPEAKER_03: But yeah.
- 3:00SPEAKER_00: So Oh you're that much yeah, you're like a lot younger, I think.
- 3:04SPEAKER_00: I I saw it when I was like 18, I think.
- 3:06SPEAKER_03: Oh yeah, no, I think I would have been in um grade three or something like that.
- 3:12SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 3:14SPEAKER_00: Just aging me.
- 3:16SPEAKER_00: Yeah um but I I like have a clear memory of this coming out, and like um, but this came out at like the time of uh right at the same time as Dream Girls came out, which I was a huge fan of, and I was like fully on board for his career to like uh to him for him to go and get an Oscar for that, and then this came out and I saw it and I was like, oh no, this is gonna destroy that, and it did.
- 3:43unknown: Yeah.
- 3:44SPEAKER_03: Yeah, a lot of people said that he would have gotten the um Oscar if it weren't for the movie.
- 3:52SPEAKER_00: I mean it's so on Rotten Tomatoes it's 9%, which is very low.
- 4:00SPEAKER_00: Um and then it's 53% audience score, which is like it's not too bad.
- 4:05SPEAKER_00: That's not terrible.
- 4:06SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 4:06SPEAKER_00: So like the audience clearly have a better reaction to it than the critics.
- 4:09SPEAKER_00: Um so like uh how many times have you seen it then?
- 4:16SPEAKER_00: Oh.
- 4:19SPEAKER_03: Probably under 10, but almost 10.
- 4:22SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 4:23SPEAKER_03: Around that.
- 4:23SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 4:24SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 4:24SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's not bad.
- 4:26SPEAKER_00: That's not like for a film that you love, that's pretty good.
- 4:28SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's not Well, that film that you love ironically, I guess.
- 4:32SPEAKER_03: It's not super obsessive yet.
- 4:34SPEAKER_03: I've seen like maybe dated dazed and confused maybe 30 times.
- 4:37SPEAKER_00: Like that's oh, that's a classic.
- 4:40SPEAKER_03: And I never get tired of it, but.
- 4:43SPEAKER_00: That is just like a nice like comfort movie, actually.
- 4:45SPEAKER_03: Yeah, a nice hangout film, because you feel like you're there.
- 4:51SPEAKER_00: So, uh, yeah, so you what were you like?
- 4:54SPEAKER_00: What's grade three in in Canada?
- 4:56SPEAKER_03: Uh you're like age uh eight, eight or nine.
- 5:01SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 5:02SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's that's pretty young to watch this.
- 5:04SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 5:07SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 5:07SPEAKER_03: I I don't know why.
- 5:08SPEAKER_03: I think my parents were like, well, they let me watch.
- 5:10SPEAKER_03: I think it on that same day, we were just hopping from movie to movie.
- 5:15SPEAKER_03: We also watched Epic Movie that same day.
- 5:19SPEAKER_03: And that's also like a really shitty, also, like also, but R-rated movie.
- 5:24SPEAKER_03: So I don't know what they were doing.
- 5:26SPEAKER_00: That's way worse than this, though.
- 5:28SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 5:28SPEAKER_03: I have not returned to see that.
- 5:32SPEAKER_00: That's just like that's offensively bad and just like not enjoyable.
- 5:36SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 5:37SPEAKER_00: This has like moments of it, at least for me, it has like moments I enjoyed.
- 5:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 5:42SPEAKER_00: Uh so uh let's let's talk about the movie itself then.
- 5:47SPEAKER_00: So it's it's an Eddie Murphy movie where he's playing like lots of different characters, although not as many as I thought he was playing.
- 5:56SPEAKER_00: Like I when I went back and like looked at the cast list, he was only playing three characters, which is small for him, I felt like.
- 6:03SPEAKER_00: Yeah, compared to like his other films where he's like the Nutty Professor, he's in like he's like 15 different characters or something.
- 6:11SPEAKER_00: Um but yeah, so he's playing characters of Norbit himself, he's playing his wife uh Respucia, and then he plays uh Mr.
- 6:22SPEAKER_00: Wong.
- 6:24SPEAKER_00: Um Norbit is flying himself, like I got no issues with Norbit.
- 6:30SPEAKER_00: Respuchia and Mr.
- 6:32SPEAKER_00: Wong.
- 6:37SPEAKER_03: They're uh they're caricatures of uh people in probably the worst way represented.
- 6:45SPEAKER_03: Um yeah.
- 6:46SPEAKER_03: Mr.
- 6:47SPEAKER_03: Wong is I yeah, that's I I actually showed it I watched half of it with high school friends last night, and like I think my friend's exact words were like, this is some breakfast at Tiffany shit with uh with Mr.
- 7:01SPEAKER_03: Wong, and I was like, I was like, yeah, yeah.
- 7:04SPEAKER_03: Every like every I think I don't know, every L was became like an R in his like uh speech, and then I was just like, Yeah, he was like, This is like embarrassing.
- 7:15SPEAKER_03: I was like, Yeah, it's embarrassing.
- 7:18SPEAKER_00: He says the word Brack a lot, yeah.
- 7:22SPEAKER_00: And and then Rashbush is just like the stereotype of like an angry, overweight woman.
- 7:29SPEAKER_00: That that's that's how they make her.
- 7:31SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I feel like uh to to kind of like counterbalance Tandy Newton's like very calm skinny woman, which is just not nice, not the nicest thing.
- 7:45SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 7:47SPEAKER_00: But the m the movie itself, the plot of it is that he's he's uh dropped at an orphanage uh as a child, he's like thrown out of a car, and uh the orphanage is owned by Mr.
- 8:00SPEAKER_00: Wong, who also owns a uh Chinese restaurant.
- 8:03SPEAKER_03: It's the same god It's in the same it's in the same it's a half restaurant, half orphanage.
- 8:09SPEAKER_03: What a concept.
- 8:13SPEAKER_00: Half half or half an age whole half orphanage, half restaurant, and then like everyone dumps their kids there as well, apparently.
- 8:21SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 8:21SPEAKER_00: From it from the looks of it.
- 8:23SPEAKER_00: And he's thrown out of the car, uh, and then Mr.
- 8:28SPEAKER_00: Wong is not happy to take him in because he's uh he's another little black child and he thinks he's not gonna get rid of be able to get rid of him.
- 8:34SPEAKER_00: And which is immediately it's just like, oh, okay, this is where we're going with this movie.
- 8:41SPEAKER_00: Um And then he's like he uh he meets Kate at the orphanage, who is like he's like they get they get like a the they are like paired up together to like look out for e look after each other and they like start developing like crutches on each other, they have their first kiss together, and then she's suddenly adopted and taken away, and he's uh he's all out for himself at that point.
- 9:02SPEAKER_00: And then that's when they meet uh that's when Raspucha comes along as a child and like beats up the two two bullies, and then like they become boyfriend and girlfriend and have to at her own request and and then they like stay together, get married, and then it cuts to like present day and then like antics ensue, I guess.
- 9:25SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 9:27SPEAKER_00: That's pretty much the premise of the movie.
- 9:29SPEAKER_00: Uh yeah, Kate comes back to like um live there again eventually, and then like that's that's pretty much it.
- 9:38SPEAKER_00: But like we can kind of discuss the plot now, I guess.
- 9:42SPEAKER_00: Like we can go discuss plot points and things like what what a um is there anything like really stands out to you about it?
- 9:50SPEAKER_00: Uh about the I'll say Well, just in general about the film It's just ha how that's how I would put it.
- 9:59SPEAKER_03: I think that's part of the magic of watching it, is just like how did we get here?
- 10:04SPEAKER_03: But then I think I also quite like like um even though like it I mean as you described, it's oh it makes no sense, it's very wacky, but like there's a lot of like I guess like relatable like parts.
- 10:18SPEAKER_03: So it's like I don't know who hasn't been in a relationship where they felt stuck, right?
- 10:23SPEAKER_03: With like Rospucia and Norbit.
- 10:26SPEAKER_03: Um, I don't know, and then there's like a lot of longing, and I think that's like a for any movie, like longing is what makes it for me, especially romantic comedies, which this technically is.
- 10:38SPEAKER_00: Um it is, it is a romantic comedy, yeah.
- 10:41SPEAKER_03: Um, but yeah, things that stick out.
- 10:43SPEAKER_03: Uh Mr.
- 10:44SPEAKER_03: Wong's obsession with whales is weird.
- 10:48SPEAKER_00: I feel like that's a pure setup just for the end.
- 10:51SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah.
- 10:52SPEAKER_00: Like that's all it's there for.
- 10:54SPEAKER_00: And um the turkey arse for some reason, like they give him the turkey arse.
- 11:00SPEAKER_00: Like the brothers are played by uh Terry Cruz and like two other guys who I didn't recognise, but um The turkey ass is a big bit.
- 11:08SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 11:09SPEAKER_00: So they're like handing out bits of I feel like they're handing out chicken and they give him the turkey a turkey arse though.
- 11:15SPEAKER_04: Wow for some reason.
- 11:16SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 11:17SPEAKER_00: It looks like it feels like they're giving chicken and then he gets a turkey.
- 11:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 11:20SPEAKER_00: Did you I and Did you like the pimps?
- 11:24SPEAKER_00: I did, actually.
- 11:25SPEAKER_00: I thought they were I thought they're one of the better parts of the movie.
- 11:28SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 11:28SPEAKER_00: Even though they're like kind of offensive, they're still funny, in it.
- 11:32SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 11:33SPEAKER_03: And I call I like Oh god.
- 11:36SPEAKER_03: Oh, I was like, I just like really like uh Cat Williams and Eddie uh Grant.
- 11:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah, me too.
- 11:41SPEAKER_00: I was gonna say the same thing, actually.
- 11:42SPEAKER_00: I just really enjoy them.
- 11:43SPEAKER_00: Like Cat Williams, I'll always like whenever he's a pimp, he's funny.
- 11:47SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 11:48SPEAKER_00: Anytime he's in a movie, he's funny as well.
- 11:50SPEAKER_00: He's like he he's so consistent.
- 11:51SPEAKER_00: And then Eddie Griffin, I haven't seen him play a pimp much, but like he's he was funny in this.
- 11:56SPEAKER_00: He was like I think he was funnier than Cat Williams in this, actually.
- 11:58SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no, he Cat Williams took a little bit of a a back seat, which is like weird for him.
- 12:05SPEAKER_00: It's also like I feel like this was the height of Cat Williams as well, around this time.
- 12:09SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, I think so.
- 12:11SPEAKER_00: So it's kind of interesting to see him take a back seat.
- 12:13SPEAKER_00: Maybe maybe just because it's Eddie Griffin.
- 12:15SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 12:16SPEAKER_00: And he was so big.
- 12:17SPEAKER_00: Who else is in it?
- 12:18SPEAKER_00: There's Marlon Wayans as a dance teacher, and that was exhausting.
- 12:25SPEAKER_03: Kristen Shawl is in it for a little bit.
- 12:27SPEAKER_00: Kristen Shaw, yeah, for like one scene, isn't it?
- 12:30SPEAKER_00: For some reason.
- 12:32SPEAKER_03: That one like it like surprised my friend so much because I was showing it to him and he was like, Isn't she like respected?
- 12:38SPEAKER_03: I was like, technically they're all these people are respected.
- 12:41SPEAKER_03: I don't know what to tell you.
- 12:42SPEAKER_00: Every one of them is a good comedic actor, and I don't know what half of them are doing in this.
- 12:48SPEAKER_03: Yeah, like I don't know.
- 12:50SPEAKER_03: I think I think this is also like Charlie Charlie Murphy and Eddie Murphy were they like I think this was kind of supposed to be their like well it was their baby, I think.
- 13:00SPEAKER_00: And like Yeah, it was their they they they came up with the story and then like they wrote it alongside two others.
- 13:06SPEAKER_00: So it took four writers to make this which is truly crazy.
- 13:12SPEAKER_00: I don't know if it's purely that they came up with the idea of the story and then they got like writing credit on it as well.
- 13:19SPEAKER_03: But like what is happening Oh, I really another thing that sticks out that I really like is the name of the uh because one of the things that the so Respucius brothers are trying to open a strip club in the old orphanage, but my favorite part about that is the name of the strip club that or how they what they wanna name it, which is Nipalopolis.
- 13:42SPEAKER_03: Yeah, great name, which I really enjoyed.
- 13:48SPEAKER_00: I um I don't know, like I feel like um Terry Cruz was a little bit strange in this.
- 13:55SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 13:57SPEAKER_00: It's not his usual kind of role.
- 14:00SPEAKER_03: Well he usually plays like a quite nice guy.
- 14:03SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 14:04SPEAKER_00: Although, like, back in the day, like when he first came along, he was playing like angry roles, but still it still felt really strange to see him like this.
- 14:14SPEAKER_00: But then, like, I don't know.
- 14:16SPEAKER_00: Looking at him lately, who knows what's going on.
- 14:18SPEAKER_03: Well, yeah.
- 14:20SPEAKER_03: He's been saying some stuff.
- 14:24SPEAKER_00: Maybe this is the perfect like movie for him.
- 14:27SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I think so.
- 14:30SPEAKER_00: Um I don't know, like uh so the stuff stuff happens with like um we'll talk about let's go through the movie plot itself then.
- 14:40SPEAKER_00: Um So after after they come back, after Kate comes back and moves in again, uh Oh no, actually, when they get married, for the when they first get married, there's the sex montage because she ha he has to carry her in, and he can't do it, obviously, because she's too big, and that's the joke, and then he carries, and then she just gets up and like walks in, and then she dresses up immediately, and he lies on the bed and she jumps on him, the bed immediately breaks, then there's a montage of her dressing up in different outfits, and him dressing up in different outfits, and they're like role-playing, and every time the bed breaks until the last time, where he's got it like under concrete blocks to finally keep the bed up, and it's so dumb.
- 15:25SPEAKER_00: And it goes on for so long.
- 15:27SPEAKER_03: They really exhaust every bit that they can.
- 15:30SPEAKER_03: I mean the movie is just like one long cruel fat.
- 15:34SPEAKER_03: One long fat joke.
- 15:34SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 15:37SPEAKER_00: And I don't know, like it's a there's lots of fat jokes, lots of racist jokes, um, there's lots of uh yeah, just like random childish humor in this movie.
- 15:53SPEAKER_00: And I'm so uh I don't mean to like consistently like keep insulting a movie that you enjoy, but no, it's I'm also aware, right?
- 16:02SPEAKER_03: Like I enjoy it, but I'm like, I get it, you know.
- 16:08SPEAKER_00: There's some there are some very funny things within it.
- 16:11SPEAKER_00: Like um, there's some dumb jokes in it that I really enjoyed.
- 16:14SPEAKER_00: Like uh when when she first gets in the car and uh and uh she's like oh the back seat uh you've moved the seats uh forward again.
- 16:22SPEAKER_00: He's like, I haven't, and he she goes, You have uh look every time I breathe my titty makes the s the the the hornhogs.
- 16:29SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 16:31SPEAKER_00: It just made me laugh, and I just it's so dumb.
- 16:34SPEAKER_00: Um I don't know, do you did you are you like uh are you a is the appeal of it the the humor, the dumb humor, or is it like just a uh nostalgic movie for you?
- 16:46SPEAKER_03: Uh just the dumb humor, I guess, because if like when it there's not I don't have a huge nostalgic attachment to it.
- 16:54SPEAKER_03: Um even though I did watch it in the theaters when it did come out.
- 16:58SPEAKER_03: I didn't start like I wasn't it wasn't a movie I returned to until like maybe college.
- 17:05SPEAKER_03: And then because I I remember me and a bunch of my friends were like, oh yeah, do you remember that movie?
- 17:10SPEAKER_03: And it was like war flashbacks between all of us.
- 17:13SPEAKER_03: And we were like, Yeah, we turned it on, and then it was just a funny thing for us to like be like, oh my god.
- 17:19SPEAKER_03: You know, I yeah.
- 17:23SPEAKER_00: What did your friends think of it at the time?
- 17:25SPEAKER_03: Like were they on board at like Yeah, no, they also those two, they also like it.
- 17:32SPEAKER_03: Like they genuinely like it as well.
- 17:36SPEAKER_03: It's the two that last night that I showed it to who were like did not understand it.
- 17:42SPEAKER_03: They left early too.
- 17:44SPEAKER_03: We had been hanging out for a while, but they were like, I need to go home.
- 17:49SPEAKER_03: Um but what point did they leave?
- 17:52SPEAKER_03: Right after the uh well they wanted to leave before this, but um right after No, you will sit down and enjoy it.
- 17:59SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I I pushed them on it.
- 18:01SPEAKER_03: Um they left after the water park scene.
- 18:05SPEAKER_00: Oh, so like halfway through, I guess.
- 18:07SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 18:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 18:08SPEAKER_00: That's that's probably enough time to like understand.
- 18:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 18:13SPEAKER_00: I'm not enjoying this movie.
- 18:16SPEAKER_00: Um Yeah, so like uh the brothers uh Respuce Brothers want to buy Golden Wantson uh and they want to change it into the strip club, but uh Mr.
- 18:28SPEAKER_00: Wong won't sell it.
- 18:30SPEAKER_00: Um he wants to keep it and he like chases them out with his harpoon and they're all like terrified of him.
- 18:38SPEAKER_00: Everyone in the everyone seems to be terrified of Mr.
- 18:40SPEAKER_00: Wong like constantly.
- 18:43SPEAKER_03: I think he I think they just know his aim is impeccable.
- 18:47SPEAKER_03: They don't want to piss him off.
- 18:48SPEAKER_00: I mean, yeah, it is.
- 18:50SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 18:52SPEAKER_00: And uh and then at that point uh Rashvusha goes to get uh goes to the dance class, and that's where he's basically Marlon Waynes.
- 19:00SPEAKER_00: Uh at the like height of hamming it up as a like a dance teacher.
- 19:06SPEAKER_00: He's uh he's doing like every hip thrust, he's underneath all the women like staring up at them, purving everywhere.
- 19:16SPEAKER_00: And then he walks up to Rashboucha and he's like he makes a deal with her that he'll like uh sleep with her essentially, uh in return for like her brother's funding his dance video.
- 19:32SPEAKER_00: She's like, Yeah, maybe I'll do that.
- 19:35SPEAKER_00: So it's not even like Gareth.
- 19:37SPEAKER_00: Not a hard yes, no.
- 19:38SPEAKER_00: We'll see about that.
- 19:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he's like he's still in he's still like half into it.
- 19:44SPEAKER_00: He's a very sexual being in this movie.
- 19:49SPEAKER_00: Uh what what do you think of him in this?
- 19:52SPEAKER_03: Uh honestly, I think to me, he's the cringiest.
- 19:58SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 19:58SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 20:00SPEAKER_03: Like, I feel like he shouldn't, he I feel like he shouldn't be.
- 20:03SPEAKER_03: Like, I feel like there's a long there should probably be a long list of all the other people who are in this, but to me, he's I find the hardest to watch.
- 20:12SPEAKER_03: Because it's just like not only is it like stupid, but then it's just like, oh, I actually don't find this part that funny.
- 20:19SPEAKER_03: Yeah like I can't find a redeeming quality about it.
- 20:23SPEAKER_00: No.
- 20:24SPEAKER_00: Uh are you like a fan of his in general?
- 20:27SPEAKER_03: Uh I don't mind like I guess like the scary movie series and stuff like that, but outside of that, not really.
- 20:34SPEAKER_03: Not particularly.
- 20:35SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 20:36SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I guess that makes sense.
- 20:37SPEAKER_00: Because I I um grew up like watching his uh like the Wayans Brothers TV show, so I was like a huge fan of his and like back then, and then everything he's done since like after Scary Movie, I'm just it's tough.
- 20:51SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 20:52SPEAKER_00: Cause he he's not he's a good comedic actor that's lazy.
- 20:57SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no, I think I I don't know if it was his movie, but there was like a sim like I think it was like a paranormal activity.
- 21:05SPEAKER_00: Uh yeah, that was his what?
- 21:07SPEAKER_00: Uh haunted house.
- 21:09SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I that was on Netflix, I put it on and I was like, ooh, I gotta turn this off.
- 21:14SPEAKER_03: And I usually do stick through movies, yeah, for the most part.
- 21:19SPEAKER_00: Unless I've gone to see it somewhere.
- 21:21SPEAKER_00: If it's bad, I turn it off.
- 21:23SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 21:24SPEAKER_00: If I'm really not enjoying it, I'll give it like half an hour or something.
- 21:28SPEAKER_03: I'll I'll usually stick it through.
- 21:31SPEAKER_03: I don't know why.
- 21:32SPEAKER_03: That's commitment.
- 21:33SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 21:36SPEAKER_00: Uh so like uh what else?
- 21:40SPEAKER_00: Then this is when Norbit runs into the pimps, and he's like and they're like, oh, um he finds out that they used to be a pimp, they used to be pimps.
- 21:51SPEAKER_00: And he's like, and they're like, oh no, once a pimp's always a pimp.
- 21:55SPEAKER_00: And and then they're like, uh, we want to turn They wanna like do some kind of like uh toilet thing, I don't know.
- 22:04SPEAKER_00: And it's like we'll turn from uh we used to turn bitches to Johns and now we're turning Johns to bitches or something like that.
- 22:11SPEAKER_03: Oh yeah, I think they wanted as the open like a bed bath and beyond or something like that.
- 22:15SPEAKER_03: That's what they wanted to do.
- 22:16SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 22:19SPEAKER_00: It's a f it was weird.
- 22:21SPEAKER_00: Um they have they have their own like uh rip place at the moment with like uh ex I guess like ex-prostitutes or strippers.
- 22:31SPEAKER_00: I don't know, like working behind the camera.
- 22:33SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 22:34SPEAKER_03: They're all still dressed, I guess, scantily cloud.
- 22:36SPEAKER_00: Yeah, there's because it's all this is also like a PG-13 or a 12A or whatever.
- 22:42SPEAKER_00: It's like very it's tame for what it is.
- 22:44SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 22:45SPEAKER_00: Um because you've got to get that like broad appeal for this movie.
- 22:49SPEAKER_00: Um and Norbit catches Reshvusha having an affair with uh Marlon Wayans and he like denies it and he's just like, oh no, I was teaching him how to dance.
- 23:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and uh I just get excited uh to teach people how to dance, that's why I've got an erection.
- 23:06SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and then he says, Oh, look, look, see, every time I say dance, it pops up.
- 23:11SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 23:11SPEAKER_03: And I was just like, oh you didn't like that line?
- 23:16SPEAKER_03: No.
- 23:19SPEAKER_03: I can't imagine someone having to like look at someone's like penis and being like, Well, I guess it does move when you say dance.
- 23:28SPEAKER_00: Ugh.
- 23:30SPEAKER_00: I bet he like thought of that line as well.
- 23:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 23:33SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah.
- 23:35SPEAKER_00: Uh but but he leaves and then uh Norbit calls her the Queen of Horse, and she chases him out and just like runs down the street and everyone, and then like knocks over a postman, and uh Norbit runs into a trash can and like takes his ring off, and uh so you like get the impression, oh like the the the relationship's over.
- 23:56SPEAKER_00: And so he goes and does his puppet show at the orphanage and uh that's when like Kate comes back uh and then you find out she's buying the orphanage, which is like the p the main kind of like setup for the movie.
- 24:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 24:11SPEAKER_00: She's gonna buy the she's actually gonna buy the orphanage, and uh he's so in love with her still, he's so infatuated by her.
- 24:18SPEAKER_00: Um but she's got a uh fiance played by Cuba King Jr.
- 24:23SPEAKER_00: Who wasn't actually that bad in this?
- 24:26SPEAKER_03: No, he did fine.
- 24:27SPEAKER_03: I mean He wasn't in it a whole lot, so that probably helps.
- 24:33SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 24:35SPEAKER_00: This was also at a time where his career was not doing well.
- 24:40SPEAKER_03: No.
- 24:40SPEAKER_03: What?
- 24:41SPEAKER_03: This is after snow dogs and all that.
- 24:43SPEAKER_00: Oh, it's a long time after snowdogs.
- 24:45SPEAKER_03: What else?
- 24:46SPEAKER_03: What was in between snowdogs and Norbit that let him?
- 24:49SPEAKER_00: Uh snowdog, I feel like snowdogs and rat race were at the same time.
- 24:53SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, I think they were.
- 24:55SPEAKER_00: And then maybe nothing until Norbit.
- 25:00SPEAKER_00: Oof.
- 25:01SPEAKER_00: I can't think of anything he was in until Norbit between that.
- 25:05SPEAKER_02: Neither can I.
- 25:05SPEAKER_02: I I don't know.
- 25:08SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 25:09SPEAKER_00: That that's an Oscar-winning actor.
- 25:11SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 25:14SPEAKER_00: In fact, it's the only Oscar-winning actor in the movie.
- 25:17SPEAKER_03: Oh, yeah.
- 25:18SPEAKER_03: No, yeah, it's just in.
- 25:20SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 25:21SPEAKER_03: Well, you gotta, you know, sometimes you need that check.
- 25:26SPEAKER_00: Have you seen him lately?
- 25:28SPEAKER_03: Well, last I saw him in something was uh the OJ um mini-series thing.
- 25:36SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 25:37SPEAKER_00: Which he was pretty good in.
- 25:38SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 25:38SPEAKER_00: But like I mean I mean in real life if you've seen him lately.
- 25:42SPEAKER_00: No, why?
- 25:42SPEAKER_00: Is he not looking well?
- 25:45SPEAKER_00: There's like a viral clip of him that goes round where um he's like very drunk at a club and he's like um and he's like yelling out on the microphone, he's like, somebody suck this baby's dick! Somebody suck this Oh my wow and it and then like apparently it's very common for him to like go to clubs and get like blackout drunk and say that particular phrase.
- 26:12SPEAKER_00: I don't know about say that particular I don't know about that particular phrase, but it's it's just like it's viral on it just went viral because it was so funny.
- 26:19SPEAKER_03: Wow, I'll have I'm definitely like that's gonna be it in the repertoire after this of memes to send people and then like someone drew it as like a cartoon version, and it's just very funny.
- 26:35SPEAKER_00: Um but yeah, he's like the fiat this is like I guess him trying to make a comeback in this movie, and he's like uh very kind of normal and mellow, but the bad guy.
- 26:48SPEAKER_00: Because he's like uh kind of tricking well not kind of, he is tricking uh Kate um into marriage for the purpose of like getting uh like funding for this c this uh thing that he wants.
- 27:04SPEAKER_00: Um and you find out later that he's got like four different ex-wives over the last six years that he's swimming swindled out of like 300 grand.
- 27:12SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and a bunch of kids too that he's just fucked off.
- 27:15SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 27:18SPEAKER_00: Which does seem act like once you start to learn about his character, it does seem accurate because um but then this card still like I what I feel like is the worst moment in the movie, which is um Reshpucha runs over the neighbor's dog intentionally.
- 27:39SPEAKER_00: I don't know why.
- 27:40SPEAKER_03: I do enjoy that part.
- 27:43SPEAKER_03: I just like it's like why not?
- 27:46SPEAKER_03: Because like people I know like well, like it's like people, if they're gonna go over the top, that's probably the most over-the-top thing that you can do because people love dogs, and that's something that would like piss off a lot of people.
- 27:59SPEAKER_03: But it kind of I do like the part when it comes back and then it has like a I guess a uh contraption so that the dog can still walk because like the the back legs that got uh mangled.
- 28:14SPEAKER_00: And then yeah, and then we Although given the car, like given the car driving directly into the dog, there's no way that would be.
- 28:20SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no.
- 28:22SPEAKER_03: That's how they softened the blow.
- 28:24SPEAKER_00: Um it's the only way they can get away with doing that.
- 28:26SPEAKER_00: I feel like they can't kill a dog by have having someone run it over in a comedy movie.
- 28:31SPEAKER_03: Because like you can't mess with you can't mess with dogs in films because like look, I mean, look at I am a legend, right?
- 28:37SPEAKER_03: Like people could not handle that.
- 28:39SPEAKER_00: And John Wick.
- 28:40SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 28:40SPEAKER_03: So I mean, that's it.
- 28:42SPEAKER_03: They're just being bold with that.
- 28:44SPEAKER_03: They were smart to bring it back, you know, in this surreal world, but you know.
- 28:50SPEAKER_00: And that dog, played by Charlie Murphy later.
- 28:53SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 28:54SPEAKER_00: Voiced by him, co-writer of the script.
- 28:58SPEAKER_03: He's like, I gotta get in this without showing my face.
- 29:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 29:03SPEAKER_00: He knew.
- 29:04SPEAKER_00: He knew he knew.
- 29:06SPEAKER_00: This is his favourite to his brother.
- 29:08SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 29:11SPEAKER_00: Um Yeah, and then she like uh so he goes to leave her, but then she says, like, oh I'm I'm you can't leave me, I'm with child.
- 29:19SPEAKER_03: Yeah, she's like, can't can't you can't you tell?
- 29:22SPEAKER_03: Can't you tell which child and she's like saves the same amount of big the entire time.
- 29:29SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 29:29SPEAKER_00: But she does tell him like five minutes later that she wasn't actually pregnant.
- 29:34SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 29:34SPEAKER_00: And she's like, oh no, I just had gas.
- 29:36unknown: Yeah.
- 29:36SPEAKER_00: And I've still got it now, and then she farts.
- 29:39SPEAKER_00: Because you've got to have a fart drug.
- 29:41SPEAKER_03: It has everything.
- 29:42SPEAKER_03: I'm just telling you.
- 29:43SPEAKER_00: It does, it has everything.
- 29:46SPEAKER_00: Um yeah, because Norbit goes to the the like fun fair with he goes to meet Kate there, but he brings Fresh Busha along for whatever reason.
- 29:56SPEAKER_00: Um And he like goes and dances and she gets like really jealous and like throws throws a speaker into his the back of his head and knocks him out.
- 30:07SPEAKER_00: Which is I I admit it made me laugh actually.
- 30:11SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's funny.
- 30:13SPEAKER_03: And then and then they say they say at the hospital, like, oh, you should shouldn't you be dead?
- 30:19SPEAKER_03: It's like, oh well, the doctor said if I didn't have my afro, I would be.
- 30:25SPEAKER_00: Didn't he say hard afro?
- 30:26SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 30:27SPEAKER_00: Hard afro what is a hard afro?
- 30:30SPEAKER_00: No clue.
- 30:33SPEAKER_00: Um the Kate visits him in the hospital and she likes leaning over him, and because she's leaning over him, his heartbeat obviously goes up and it shoots like 130, and she's so oblivious to white shooting up, and she's got like her boobs in his face.
- 30:48SPEAKER_00: It's like, well, what do you think is happening right now?
- 30:52SPEAKER_00: She's getting closer and closer to him.
- 30:55SPEAKER_03: That was one of the few parts that made my friends laugh that I showed it to last night.
- 30:59SPEAKER_03: Oh really?
- 31:00SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 31:00SPEAKER_03: For some reason that got them.
- 31:03SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 31:04SPEAKER_00: Sure.
- 31:06SPEAKER_03: I don't know.
- 31:08SPEAKER_00: It just made me think, like, how oblivious she is to everything going on in this movie.
- 31:13SPEAKER_03: Oh yeah.
- 31:14SPEAKER_00: She's very, she's very like, I don't know.
- 31:17SPEAKER_03: Not just not yeah, just not aware.
- 31:20SPEAKER_03: I don't think she's very self-aware either.
- 31:22SPEAKER_00: No.
- 31:24SPEAKER_00: That's actually funny because when they're both dancing, she's dancing badly, and then she like tells, she says to Norbit, oh, he's got the moves or something like that.
- 31:32SPEAKER_00: He's like, he's dancing even worse.
- 31:34SPEAKER_00: And I know she's just encouraging him, but like it's so they both dance everyone in in in the scene is dancing so badly.
- 31:42SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 31:45SPEAKER_00: Um but yeah, so the brothers run wind up talking to Cuba Gunny Jr.
- 31:50SPEAKER_00: and they're like, oh, you need to get married now because uh and we'll give you like the contract, and like you can be pumped, you get you'll become part of this as well, and like we'll get you in on the deal.
- 32:00SPEAKER_00: And so he's obviously wants to get married to her now, and he like goes and tells Kate we need to get married immediately.
- 32:06SPEAKER_00: Um and then they all go to the water park.
- 32:09SPEAKER_00: And the moment where your friends left.
- 32:12SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 32:13SPEAKER_03: Which I think is the best part.
- 32:14SPEAKER_03: I think the water part gags are fun.
- 32:17SPEAKER_03: I I don't mind them.
- 32:18SPEAKER_03: They're not great, you know, but the part where she's the fact that uh the uh I guess the attendant at the gate asked Resfuchia if she had bottoms on.
- 32:33SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 32:34SPEAKER_03: And they ha that that part every time I'm just like, okay.
- 32:43SPEAKER_00: I mean, yeah, it goes there with that.
- 32:45SPEAKER_00: It's like um and then she like breaks down the barrier to get through.
- 32:50SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 32:50SPEAKER_00: Um because obviously she can't fit through it because she's that big.
- 32:55SPEAKER_00: That's the joke.
- 32:56SPEAKER_00: And then she tells she goes to go on the water slide until and they say they've got a weight limit of 300 pounds, and she says, oh, I'm like 160 or something.
- 33:06SPEAKER_00: And you know what's gonna you know what's coming.
- 33:09SPEAKER_00: You know what's gonna happen as soon as she gets on the slide.
- 33:13SPEAKER_00: She goes down it, goes flying through, uh, flying down, everyone moves out of the way.
- 33:18SPEAKER_00: She goes flying through s uh some wood into the kid's area, and it looks like she's gonna land on the kid, but she like just misses, and like uh take and lands, and it takes all the water out of the pool.
- 33:32SPEAKER_00: And this is the height of comedy for you.
- 33:34SPEAKER_00: That's just good.
- 33:37SPEAKER_00: That's just good.
- 33:38SPEAKER_00: I mean That's just good storytelling.
- 33:40SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 33:41SPEAKER_03: That kid I don't know.
- 33:45SPEAKER_00: It it subverts expectations.
- 33:48SPEAKER_03: Oh yes.
- 33:51SPEAKER_03: Um, I don't I don't even know.
- 33:53SPEAKER_03: Like, it's just like so obvious that it's funny to me.
- 33:58SPEAKER_03: It's just like it's just like, oh, of course, of course they would do that.
- 34:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 34:02SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 34:03SPEAKER_00: I mean, it's to be fair, the water park stuff was the only stuff I remembered ha from having seen it back then.
- 34:11SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 34:11SPEAKER_00: It was the only scene that I remembered.
- 34:13SPEAKER_03: Well, see, it's it stay it stays with you for some for some reason.
- 34:18SPEAKER_00: I remembered it none of the rest of this movie.
- 34:20SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 34:22SPEAKER_00: From what, like uh 13 years ago, 14 years ago, wherever it was.
- 34:27SPEAKER_00: Something like that, yeah.
- 34:28SPEAKER_03: Although I do, I will say, I think they did this bit in the water part too, but there's like a running bit of like um the Pussycat doll song playing and her singing it.
- 34:38SPEAKER_03: And yeah, I think that's another part that I really quite enjoy.
- 34:45SPEAKER_00: All the songs in this are like real songs of the time.
- 34:49SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's actually a pretty good soundtrack.
- 34:51SPEAKER_03: Like it's like a nice little time time time capsule of like uh what was on the radio at that time.
- 34:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's all massive radio hits.
- 34:58SPEAKER_00: It's not stuff I would listen to now, but it's like all radio hits of the time.
- 35:02SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 35:02SPEAKER_03: Which they must have paid quite a bit to have it in the for the rides of the songs.
- 35:08SPEAKER_00: Yeah, definitely.
- 35:09SPEAKER_00: And like it's kind of strange because that's not that's not like a normal thing that you get.
- 35:15SPEAKER_00: You usually get like at least a few songs here and there like are that are older songs.
- 35:19SPEAKER_00: But I think the only one the only older song I can remember is like Sexual Healing, they play at one point.
- 35:24SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 35:25SPEAKER_00: I think that's it.
- 35:27SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I I think it's for the most part, it's all mo well modern at the time.
- 35:31SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 35:32SPEAKER_00: But immediately dates itself like a year later.
- 35:35SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 35:36SPEAKER_00: Um, but that's fine.
- 35:38SPEAKER_00: I mean, like, it's a nice little nostalgic throwback.
- 35:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 35:42SPEAKER_00: Um, well, the yeah, she's on the slide, she's the rest of the kids.
- 35:46SPEAKER_00: Uh and at this point, like Norbert is starting to get close to Kate, and uh um Rasputha like speaks to Kate.
- 35:57SPEAKER_00: Uh they sit next to each other and like she calls her like something she has some like some skinny insult to her.
- 36:04SPEAKER_00: She insults her about like her eating habits or something.
- 36:06SPEAKER_03: Yeah, so she looks emaciated or yeah.
- 36:11SPEAKER_00: It's the first time like Kate's any sh actually shown like any true emotion.
- 36:15SPEAKER_03: Yeah, oh yeah.
- 36:16SPEAKER_03: That's a yeah.
- 36:18SPEAKER_03: Otherwise, uh the whole time she's just kind of there.
- 36:20SPEAKER_03: I don't know.
- 36:21SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 36:23SPEAKER_00: Which is it's Tandy Newton as well.
- 36:25SPEAKER_00: I haven't said that yet, but it's Tandy Newton.
- 36:28SPEAKER_00: A very, very good actress.
- 36:29SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 36:32SPEAKER_00: And her accent is very good in this as well.
- 36:35SPEAKER_03: I think I think it's one of those things where it's like with Twilight again, it's like, oh, people always said that Kristen Stewart was like a horrible actor, but it's like a lot of times you it's it's off of the script.
- 36:44SPEAKER_03: You gotta do what you got.
- 36:47SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you're just working with it.
- 36:48SPEAKER_00: Like, yeah, because again, everyone in this is good in some way at some point, just not necessarily in this.
- 36:57SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 36:59SPEAKER_00: Um Yeah, the brother So Norbit goes on a a date.
- 37:04SPEAKER_00: Oh no, first of all, there's Rashusha at a car wash.
- 37:08SPEAKER_00: For some reason.
- 37:08SPEAKER_00: At a car wash?
- 37:10SPEAKER_03: Is she at car wash?
- 37:11SPEAKER_03: She's washing.
- 37:12SPEAKER_03: I think she's I think she's just at the construction site washing her car.
- 37:17SPEAKER_00: Right, right.
- 37:18SPEAKER_00: And I think that's when they play the pussycat.
- 37:21SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 37:22SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 37:23SPEAKER_00: It's just like it has no real like purpose to the story, but it's just there.
- 37:29SPEAKER_03: It's just, yeah, it's just another gag for them to Yeah.
- 37:33SPEAKER_03: To have like this really hypersexualized shot of Eddie Murphy in a fat suit as a woman.
- 37:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 37:43SPEAKER_00: It could have like stuck that anywhere in the movie, I feel like, as well.
- 37:46SPEAKER_03: Oh yeah.
- 37:47SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 37:48SPEAKER_00: It could have come at any point.
- 37:50SPEAKER_00: Um, but it's it's while like uh it's right before Norbert goes on a date with Kate, like a technical date, like she's obviously not think considering it as a date, but he kind of is because the pimp the pimps are saying, like, oh, are you paying for it?
- 38:03SPEAKER_00: And he's like, no, and he's like, well, that's a date then.
- 38:05SPEAKER_00: Uh but she's just asking him to come along to like help decide on food.
- 38:09SPEAKER_00: But they go to an Italian restaurant, they just go to an Italian restaurant and eat.
- 38:13SPEAKER_00: Um and while that's happening, uh, the brothers uh give Norbit the papers to like get him to sign uh over the business.
- 38:25SPEAKER_00: And like so she signs over the business to them, essentially, without realising.
- 38:29SPEAKER_00: And he doesn't realise it either.
- 38:30SPEAKER_00: He just thinks they're signing it as he's just signing it for some like construction purpose, I think.
- 38:35SPEAKER_00: Um and then Norbit shows up to the restaurant, he's just like a pimp.
- 38:40SPEAKER_00: And because he's like hung out with the pimp.
- 38:45SPEAKER_00: Like that they're really like They're his mentors.
- 38:49SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 38:49SPEAKER_00: They're his two closest friends in this.
- 38:54SPEAKER_03: Yeah, there's no one.
- 38:54SPEAKER_03: It's just them who he's friends with.
- 38:58SPEAKER_00: But they're like they're also like quite well-meaning, the two of them.
- 39:02SPEAKER_03: Yeah, they want the best for him, I think.
- 39:05SPEAKER_00: They want the best for him, and they want like the best, they want like they want to do what's right, it seems like as well, a lot of the times.
- 39:11SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 39:11SPEAKER_00: Which is quite funny, it's like quite quite a funny subversion.
- 39:14SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 39:15SPEAKER_00: Um, but then like Kate signs the papers without realizing she just like, oh yeah, blah blah blah uh papers, and just signs them without reading it.
- 39:26SPEAKER_00: And he doesn't think anything of it either.
- 39:28SPEAKER_00: And Rasfusha finds out about the date and like drives straight, gets furious, drives straight to him while they're in uh church having the rehearsal because uh Cupid Gunning Jr.
- 39:39SPEAKER_00: can't be there at the time.
- 39:41SPEAKER_00: Um so they have the rehearsal, and then Norbit gives like a fake speech, but it's like a real loved-up speech, and then they kiss for the first time.
- 39:52SPEAKER_00: And then they go he goes home and Rashbruce is sitting in the dark waiting for him with like no makeup on, wig off, yeah.
- 40:04SPEAKER_00: And she gets furious and throws him out a window.
- 40:08SPEAKER_00: Which made me laugh.
- 40:10SPEAKER_03: She's very she's very strong.
- 40:13SPEAKER_00: I mean, yeah.
- 40:15SPEAKER_03: Like physically.
- 40:16SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 40:16SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but have you seen her three brothers as well?
- 40:19SPEAKER_00: It makes sense.
- 40:19SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 40:20SPEAKER_00: That whole family is strong.
- 40:22SPEAKER_03: They all lift.
- 40:26SPEAKER_00: And she and she does a lot of exercise as well.
- 40:28SPEAKER_03: Yeah, oh yes, with with Marlon.
- 40:34SPEAKER_00: Um I don't know.
- 40:36SPEAKER_00: Do you have any thoughts in the last few the last few things that I've brought up the last few scenes?
- 40:41SPEAKER_03: Uh just like just like RSPUC is so abusive.
- 40:49SPEAKER_03: She's such an abusive partner.
- 40:52SPEAKER_03: There's no there's no trust, but then also like, ah, well, I maybe she has reason not to trust him at that point.
- 41:00SPEAKER_03: Right?
- 41:01SPEAKER_03: I don't know.
- 41:01SPEAKER_03: I mean she's not she does she doesn't think she doesn't have a good track record.
- 41:05SPEAKER_03: She's cheating herself, so she can't really say she can't doesn't really have the right to say anything, but she also is like in not all.
- 41:13SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 41:15SPEAKER_00: But like they're both very toxic for each other.
- 41:18SPEAKER_03: They're both bad.
- 41:19SPEAKER_03: They're both bad, but I get I get both sides.
- 41:23SPEAKER_03: I get why she's upset, like uh I get I get it.
- 41:27SPEAKER_03: Like you see, you see your supposed husband, even though you're not doing well, right?
- 41:32SPEAKER_03: And you see him kissing some woman who um is the exact, I guess, opposite of you.
- 41:39SPEAKER_03: It's threatening.
- 41:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 41:42SPEAKER_00: At the same time, though, like in the lead up to that, he's done nothing.
- 41:48SPEAKER_00: He's not really yeah, he's been in good until she until she came along until Kate came along again.
- 41:53SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 41:54SPEAKER_00: He's just he's just been and then and then Rashbrusha was already cheating before Kate came along.
- 42:00SPEAKER_03: Yeah, so she's she's definitely worse.
- 42:06SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I mean it's not hard.
- 42:08SPEAKER_00: No, yeah, no, she's definitely worse.
- 42:10SPEAKER_00: I mean Yeah, clearly.
- 42:11SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's not an argument there.
- 42:14SPEAKER_01: There's no contest between the two of them who's who's worse.
- 42:18SPEAKER_01: It's definitely Respucia.
- 42:22SPEAKER_00: Umce he gets thrown out the window, this is when he like runs into the dog and he imagines the dog talking to him.
- 42:32SPEAKER_00: And the dog's like, oh, you should uh what is it what is the dog says?
- 42:36SPEAKER_00: Like you should you should like get out of there and and you should like uh fight back for yourself or something like that.
- 42:41SPEAKER_03: Yeah, more that's like the gist, more or less.
- 42:43SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 42:43SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 42:44SPEAKER_03: And that's that's like I think the dog says bitch a couple times, which is yeah.
- 42:49SPEAKER_00: Because it's a dog, so it's gotta say bitch.
- 42:52SPEAKER_03: Uh high level comedy.
- 42:56SPEAKER_00: I wonder if that was was that Charlie's or Eddie's line?
- 42:59SPEAKER_00: Who can say?
- 43:03SPEAKER_00: Um and then like Cuba Gunnar shows Kate the signed papers and he says, Oh didn't you read them?
- 43:10SPEAKER_00: He like tries to turn it on her and Norbit essentially just to get away with it.
- 43:16SPEAKER_00: Um And then you find out like uh this is when like uh Res Future has said to like to Norbit to stay away from Kate forever.
- 43:28SPEAKER_00: Or he'll like or she'll destroy her and like burn her face with acid.
- 43:33SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 43:34SPEAKER_00: Um which he demonstrates on a potato.
- 43:37SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 43:39SPEAKER_03: Which is um they can even get a real potato, it was like styrofoam painted uh brown.
- 43:46SPEAKER_03: I didn't notice that until I because I've not seen it in like I guess like four.
- 43:50SPEAKER_00: I didn't even notice that.
- 43:51SPEAKER_03: It was I've not seen my parents got like a new TV and it's so clear, and I was like, oh, that's styrofoam.
- 44:00SPEAKER_00: Probably because like a real potato is not gonna burn as fast.
- 44:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah, not that way.
- 44:05SPEAKER_04: No.
- 44:06SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 44:07SPEAKER_00: Um yeah, I I didn't even notice that today.
- 44:10SPEAKER_00: I've watched it this morning and but did not notice that.
- 44:13SPEAKER_00: Um but so like Kate comes over to question him and he's like locked in the basement.
- 44:22SPEAKER_00: He like tells her she has to leave.
- 44:25SPEAKER_00: Um because he's in like massively in love with Rash Rusha, but he's obviously like defending Kate and like turning into get away so to save her.
- 44:33SPEAKER_00: Um he's like, oh no, I only had eyes for Rashvarusha, don't you see it was a con all this time and stuff like that?
- 44:39SPEAKER_00: Um so she gets really upset, and then uh he goes to leave town at this point, he like sneaks out the house.
- 44:50SPEAKER_00: And he runs into Mr.
- 44:52SPEAKER_00: Wong, who's out on his like nightly walk, and this is when you get like the most offensive stuff.
- 45:01SPEAKER_04: Oh yeah.
- 45:04SPEAKER_00: Because he's like he says stuff about uh something about black people running fast, but I can't remember.
- 45:13SPEAKER_03: I think he also reiterates the point he said it, or like he was what he said at the beginning being like, oh, I had an ugly black baby never gonna be uh like adopted or whatever.
- 45:29SPEAKER_03: But they like to drop off um black babies at my orphanage.
- 45:33SPEAKER_03: Like he's I remember him mentioning that again.
- 45:36SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 45:37SPEAKER_00: And he also says, like, black people love Chinese food, so what could I do?
- 45:40SPEAKER_03: Yeah, he said not only black people, he said black people and Jews love Chinese food.
- 45:46SPEAKER_00: So I Oh, I I even missed the Jews part.
- 45:48SPEAKER_03: Yeah, he was like, so yeah, so what can I do?
- 45:50SPEAKER_03: I have to deal with them, and I was like, oh no.
- 45:57SPEAKER_00: Like I could feel I I don't know.
- 46:00SPEAKER_00: He can kind of get away with it because it's Eddie Murphy playing him and it's Eddie Murphy's black, but if he's throwing the Jew part into it as well, kind of like it's might be a bit too much.
- 46:16SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's getting into a territory there.
- 46:21SPEAKER_00: Um, no, actually, this is yeah, so he could uh he calls Kate and this is when and she won't answer.
- 46:29SPEAKER_00: She says, like, leave me alone.
- 46:31SPEAKER_00: And this is when the brothers show up and lock him in the basement.
- 46:33SPEAKER_00: He wasn't locked in the basement before he was down there uh cleaning up.
- 46:37SPEAKER_00: But um they lock him in the basement and it's wedding day.
- 46:40SPEAKER_00: It's the wedding day, uh, for Kate and Dion, uh Kiwi Goody Jr.'s character.
- 46:46SPEAKER_00: Um and one of the brothers has to look after him and he's like he's sat there doing uh the brother is sat there doing Marlon Wayne's like dance tape in his underwear.
- 47:00SPEAKER_00: And so he can't tell what's going on downstairs in the basement, and he like he eventually hears like a glass shattering and he realizes Norbert's broken out and got a bike from somewhere.
- 47:11SPEAKER_00: I don't know where he got the bike from, but he like rides.
- 47:15SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 47:17SPEAKER_00: Um and then uh Mr.
- 47:22SPEAKER_00: Wong says, like, oh we gotta like def uh stall the wedding, and he like tells the pimps to stall it.
- 47:28SPEAKER_00: Um and so they do, they get up and like start making these long speeches about love and like getting the choir up to sing, and uh while that's going on, like Norbit's riding his bike, and um the brothers and uh Respucia in the car chasing him, and they like grab him, she grabs him to the side of the car and like tries to knock him off the bike and stuff, start strangling him.
- 47:54SPEAKER_00: Um and then I wrote down this because I thought it was a dumb line, but it was funny, that um one of the pimps says that something about like turning a condom, a ribbed condom inside out, and it turns from pleasure to for her for pleasure to.
- 48:09SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I remember that.
- 48:13SPEAKER_00: It it made me laugh, it was so dumb.
- 48:16SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 48:17SPEAKER_00: Um and that that just goes on for a little while, like back and forth between those two things happening.
- 48:22SPEAKER_00: And eventually Norby gets away and like manages to get to the the wedding day, like the the church, and he objects and he tells everything, but the papers that he show have been have been like covered in water and destroyed, so like nobody can read anything, and Cumilian Union's like, oh, he's clearly crazy.
- 48:38SPEAKER_00: Uh why would you believe him?
- 48:40SPEAKER_00: He's the one that did all this in the first place.
- 48:42SPEAKER_00: Why would you believe him now?
- 48:43SPEAKER_00: And she doesn't, um until he calls in the ex-wives.
- 48:48SPEAKER_00: Which if he was doing anyway, I don't know why he had to like rush there.
- 48:53SPEAKER_03: Oh yeah, because that would have sorted it out on its own.
- 48:56SPEAKER_03: But I guess he has to be there because you know, he got he's gotta show the emotions and all that, yeah.
- 49:02SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 49:03SPEAKER_03: Has to be stakes involved.
- 49:05SPEAKER_00: Were they like standing outside?
- 49:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah, just waiting for his cue, I think.
- 49:09SPEAKER_03: Alright guys, let's go!
- 49:13SPEAKER_00: Um and then like uh Rasputz chases Norbit outside and like and uh all the shopkeepers come to help him.
- 49:23SPEAKER_00: So you get like the one guy with the with the boot on a stick, you get um you get the Italian restaurant owner with the paddle, you get um the uh the florist with all the flowers swinging them round, and they're all just like fighting back against the brothers and uh restaurants.
- 49:42SPEAKER_03: Because they've been they've been hustled for years by them.
- 49:45SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 49:46SPEAKER_00: They're all crooks and they hate them.
- 49:48SPEAKER_00: And but they all like they all start like getting beaten up until Mr.
- 49:53SPEAKER_00: Wong shows up with his with his harpoon and throws it.
- 49:57SPEAKER_03: Right in Respuchia's butt.
- 50:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah, in her blowhole.
- 50:01SPEAKER_03: In her bowhole, yeah.
- 50:05SPEAKER_00: And then that's the end of the that's the end of those guys, those p uh that family.
- 50:10SPEAKER_00: They um Kate and Norbit get married and take over the orphanage, and so there's like a night there's like a nice wedding scene with all the kids at the wedding, and uh all that happens.
- 50:22SPEAKER_00: And then uh the Latimers they find out have gone to Mexico, but we don't know why.
- 50:28SPEAKER_00: And then you find out that they've opened a strip club with the headliner Rash Fucha, and you get the the stripping scene with Rashbucha.
- 50:38SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and I think that's how it ends.
- 50:40SPEAKER_03: I think they play they even play Don't You Has to come back.
- 50:45SPEAKER_00: Nice nice callback.
- 50:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 50:49SPEAKER_00: So Okay, so that's the movie.
- 50:53SPEAKER_00: What's uh what about it?
- 50:56SPEAKER_00: What is it about it that you love that makes you love it?
- 51:01SPEAKER_00: Or that makes you enjoy it so much?
- 51:03SPEAKER_03: You kind of like touched on it, but Yeah, I think it's like so a lot of like the side characters to me are really funny.
- 51:10SPEAKER_03: And I wish that they had like so like I g you said that the most enjoyable part, I think, was the pimps for you.
- 51:16SPEAKER_03: And I'd say that for me as well.
- 51:18SPEAKER_03: Like they to me had the most quotable lines, and when if I'm referring back to this movie with friends, that's who comes up a lot.
- 51:25SPEAKER_03: Um but then also Rosbucia has had some quotable lines.
- 51:29SPEAKER_03: I remember we would like maybe maybe as teenagers or in college would be like, uh, how you doing?
- 51:35SPEAKER_03: Like, that's one that we would re because that was her catchphrase the entire time.
- 51:40SPEAKER_03: I hated that.
- 51:41SPEAKER_03: After she would because after she would do something so horrible, that's how she would button it.
- 51:47SPEAKER_00: I know.
- 51:49SPEAKER_00: It's not it doesn't fit with any of it.
- 51:51SPEAKER_03: It doesn't make sense.
- 51:53SPEAKER_03: It does, yeah.
- 51:55SPEAKER_03: It's like also it's almost it almost reminds you of like Joey Tribiani from Friends.
- 52:01SPEAKER_00: I was gonna say, it's halfway between that and it's halfway between like um Made Medea.
- 52:06SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 52:07SPEAKER_00: It's like some way between those two.
- 52:08SPEAKER_03: Somewhere between those two, yeah.
- 52:10SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 52:12SPEAKER_03: Um I don't know.
- 52:14SPEAKER_03: There's like there's some good there's are some good gags and some good lines, but I think the story itself, if it went a different direction, would have been fine.
- 52:23SPEAKER_03: I mean, they made would have been open.
- 52:25SPEAKER_03: What do you mean?
- 52:26SPEAKER_00: Well, like What do you mean?
- 52:27SPEAKER_03: I don't know, like a it's a it's a probable it's like a pretty simple like concept in that like oh you get back back to uh like a old love.
- 52:36SPEAKER_03: Like a yeah, uh a high school sweetheart or whatever.
- 52:40SPEAKER_03: Um if they use that bones with something else, um, it would have been fine.
- 52:46SPEAKER_03: But it's just like it's such a it's also funny that the tagline for the movie is like, have you ever made a huge mistake?
- 52:54SPEAKER_03: And then it's like, oh yeah, this entire film is one huge mistake, and it's so funny to watch.
- 53:02SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 53:02SPEAKER_03: It's so like there's so like I don't know.
- 53:07SPEAKER_03: It's just like part part of it, I think part of what I enjoy is just the shock of it.
- 53:11SPEAKER_03: It's like, wow, we we wanted this.
- 53:16SPEAKER_03: This is this is something we as a society wanted.
- 53:20SPEAKER_03: We wanted an Eddie Murphy comeback, and we got it, and we didn't like it.
- 53:26SPEAKER_00: I mean we liked the other movie he was in trying to make a comeback.
- 53:31SPEAKER_03: Well, yeah.
- 53:31SPEAKER_00: Or like trying to make a serious comeback again, like yeah.
- 53:34SPEAKER_00: It took, like, the whole thing is like it to that year until last year for him to like try anything like Dream Girls again, where he did the uh Dolomite is my name.
- 53:49SPEAKER_00: It took in it took like literally that long for him to like move into like that comedy drama route.
- 53:59SPEAKER_00: I don't know if it was because of like the reaction to this.
- 54:02SPEAKER_00: I'm sure I'm sure it was part of it.
- 54:05SPEAKER_03: Cause like before that, what was he was doing like a lot of children's or in between both.
- 54:10SPEAKER_03: He was doing a lot of children's movies, and I think his original fans from his stand-up and stuff really despised that.
- 54:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 54:19SPEAKER_00: I mean I was always okay with his children's stuff.
- 54:22SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 54:23SPEAKER_00: I I yeah, I'm I'm I've grown up with him though, so I know I've I was a huge fan of his from the beginning.
- 54:31SPEAKER_00: As long as I can remember.
- 54:32SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 54:33SPEAKER_00: Um but also maybe the first movie I saw with him was The Nutty Professor, so it's not far off of this style.
- 54:43SPEAKER_00: Um I don't know, like there's but there's obviously like it's better executed there, but yeah.
- 54:51SPEAKER_03: People like that movie, like genuinely.
- 54:55SPEAKER_00: The first one.
- 54:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah, the first one.
- 54:57SPEAKER_03: No, not the second one.
- 54:58SPEAKER_03: I don't think I've even seen the second one, actually, but yeah.
- 55:01SPEAKER_00: That's closer to this humor.
- 55:04SPEAKER_03: Oh, okay.
- 55:05SPEAKER_00: That that plays up like the fat jokes a lot more.
- 55:08SPEAKER_03: Oh, okay, yeah.
- 55:10SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 55:13SPEAKER_00: And then uh he he also plays so many characters in that one.
- 55:18SPEAKER_03: He actually wasn't supposed to play Respuchette originally.
- 55:23SPEAKER_03: He was supposed He was supposed to be a uh like well someone of that form, but then he he was like, no, I should play it because it'd be too mean, which is true.
- 55:35SPEAKER_03: I think it would be kind of true, but I think it's also like it's mean anyway.
- 55:39SPEAKER_03: It's mean on its own.
- 55:40SPEAKER_03: You're playing a caricature of, you know, that that has been played before and that has already been like people have a massive, not massive problem with it, but like it it's like any time that there's like a big black woman, it's a lot of times it's played by a man and it's played, you know, yeah.
- 56:00SPEAKER_03: In a knot.
- 56:01SPEAKER_03: I mean, there's no it I mean, yeah, like Medea or Big Mama, it's very like they're not fully diamond.
- 56:10SPEAKER_03: I don't know.
- 56:10SPEAKER_03: They're not great.
- 56:11SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 56:12SPEAKER_03: And they're always the butt of the joke.
- 56:15SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 56:17SPEAKER_00: It they really are, and I don't know, like I I feel like this was the end.
- 56:23SPEAKER_00: This was the last point where they could possibly well, saying that Medea was along after that.
- 56:28SPEAKER_03: Yeah, Medea's still going, I'm pretty sure.
- 56:31SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 56:32SPEAKER_00: Um But do those movies still do well to this day?
- 56:38SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, they do.
- 56:40SPEAKER_03: I th I think so.
- 56:41SPEAKER_03: There's a like a really good boondocks episode that kind of which actually is not was taken off the air because Tyler Perry had a problem with it.
- 56:49SPEAKER_03: Which uh it plays a Tyler Perry-esque character.
- 56:53SPEAKER_03: It'll name him, um, but it's obvious that it's him.
- 56:57SPEAKER_03: Um playing like, you know, a Medea type character.
- 57:00SPEAKER_03: And then it it turns out that like, oh, the they're I think he's up like a pedophile in the or like really hard to work with or or what I think it's both, but yeah, he had like such a problem with it that he called like uh the parent company of CB I think TBS and uh adults when are owned by the same company and he called them and was like, look, you need to take that off the air, I'm taking all my shit off too.
- 57:25SPEAKER_03: So he was very upset.
- 57:27SPEAKER_03: He did not I he does not like criticism about I guess because I you know, I guess that that's what made him rich, really.
- 57:35SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 57:35SPEAKER_00: So it's what got him his own studio.
- 57:39SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 57:40SPEAKER_03: There's a I mean, there's a market for it, I guess.
- 57:42SPEAKER_03: It's still there's still I think like a lot of older people still find it funny.
- 57:48SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 57:48SPEAKER_03: Like not in a s aw aware way of like, oh, this is actually kinda effed.
- 57:54SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 57:55SPEAKER_03: Because I remember my dad really liking, or both my parents really liking, not this movie particularly, but they like really liked Big Mama.
- 58:02SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 58:03SPEAKER_03: And I think that's like also a really like cartoonish, you know, portrayal of like uh an overweight black woman, right?
- 58:12SPEAKER_03: They're always like a joke.
- 58:15SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I saw that again on TV recently, and like I was surprised by how much I didn't like it from what I rem because I remember liking it when it came out.
- 58:25SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 58:26SPEAKER_03: But I was also a child, so yeah, and you're like your standard is lower, right?
- 58:30SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 58:32SPEAKER_00: Now watching it back, I was like, oh, this this is not a good movie.
- 58:35SPEAKER_00: No.
- 58:37SPEAKER_00: Um so let's talk about um let's talk about some of the reviews then.
- 58:46SPEAKER_00: Unless you have anything else you want to like bring up with them within the movie itself.
- 58:50SPEAKER_03: Uh no.
- 58:52SPEAKER_03: Let's talk about the yeah, let's talk about the reviews.
- 58:54SPEAKER_03: I'm curious.
- 58:55SPEAKER_00: I'm sure they're I want to read some of the reviews.
- 58:58SPEAKER_00: Um they're all like funny enough, they're all a lot of there's a lot of like one-liners for the reviews.
- 59:06SPEAKER_00: Um so like um Richard Roper said, like, just literally just said it's offensively bad.
- 59:13SPEAKER_00: And that's it.
- 59:14SPEAKER_00: That's just the line.
- 59:17SPEAKER_00: And then BBC said it's um three Eddie Murphy's is three too many.
- 59:22SPEAKER_00: And they gave it one out of five.
- 59:25SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 59:28SPEAKER_00: Um, this is interesting actually.
- 59:31SPEAKER_00: Guardian gave it two out of five, but they said Murphy has a deplorable joke concerning a lost policeman's whistle for which there is no excuse whatsoever.
- 59:40SPEAKER_00: Other than Oh no, sorry, I read that wrong.
- 59:43SPEAKER_00: I I thought it said other than that, it's very funny.
- 59:46SPEAKER_00: It said other than it's very funny.
- 59:49SPEAKER_00: So there's like an awful j- I don't remember the policeman's joke.
- 59:52SPEAKER_00: Neither do I.
- 59:53SPEAKER_00: I don't was that cut?
- 59:56SPEAKER_02: Maybe.
- 59:56SPEAKER_02: I because I wa I rewatched it last night.
- 59:59SPEAKER_02: I don't remember.
- 1:00:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I saw it today and I don't remember.
- 1:00:01SPEAKER_02: I don't remember a cop in it at all.
- 1:00:05SPEAKER_00: I remember well, there there is one scene where I remember him dressed up as a cop uh while they're in this doing the sex montage, but like I don't remember anything to do with the whistle.
- 1:00:16SPEAKER_02: Oh, may oh.
- 1:00:18SPEAKER_03: I think when she jumped.
- 1:00:20SPEAKER_03: It might be so minor that it's like when she jumps, he blows on it.
- 1:00:23SPEAKER_03: I think like maybe.
- 1:00:26SPEAKER_03: But I don't think I wouldn't have think that that would be the thing to pick out about it.
- 1:00:31SPEAKER_00: No.
- 1:00:32SPEAKER_03: But I guess if that's what they wanna focus on, sure.
- 1:00:38SPEAKER_00: And then like this is the most extreme version, this most extreme review.
- 1:00:42SPEAKER_00: They said, even if you go back decades, body fascism has rarely been so brazen or unfunny, horrifying.
- 1:00:50SPEAKER_03: Wow.
- 1:00:50SPEAKER_00: Body fascism.
- 1:00:53SPEAKER_03: I mean I've never heard that term before.
- 1:00:57SPEAKER_00: No.
- 1:00:59SPEAKER_03: Oh wow.
- 1:01:03SPEAKER_00: And the funny the funny thing is, like, usually when I go through these reviews, um, on the homepage, there's usually like one good review that I can pluck out of there.
- 1:01:12SPEAKER_00: None of them are none.
- 1:01:13SPEAKER_00: They're all bad.
- 1:01:14SPEAKER_03: No, I can't I can't imagine like a publication actually being like, go see this.
- 1:01:19SPEAKER_00: So it's got 11 good reviews out of uh uh 125.
- 1:01:30SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:01:31SPEAKER_03: Sounds about right.
- 1:01:33SPEAKER_00: And I'm just like looking through to see if there are any like actual Yeah.
- 1:01:37SPEAKER_00: None from anywhere I've ever heard of.
- 1:01:39SPEAKER_00: They're all like minor, like random like state or like city magazines.
- 1:01:48unknown: Yeah.
- 1:01:49SPEAKER_03: I mean it it it'd be bold for like uh a proper like newspaper or something to be like, hey, this is great.
- 1:01:59SPEAKER_03: I can imagine they'd get a lot of complaints from people who go to see it and were like, the hell are you talking about?
- 1:02:06SPEAKER_03: That might be a good prank to do on people.
- 1:02:09SPEAKER_03: Like if you're last day at like a newspaper, just find like the shittest movie that's on in theaters right now and then tell them it's really good and see how many people go based off of your recommendation.
- 1:02:22SPEAKER_00: I think could you could the only way you could get away with that is if it's really your last day anywhere, not if you're going on to work somewhere else.
- 1:02:28SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:02:30SPEAKER_00: There's like this this person's lost their mind.
- 1:02:33SPEAKER_00: What are you talking about?
- 1:02:34SPEAKER_00: I see why they're retiring.
- 1:02:38SPEAKER_00: Um Okay, so do you have anything else you want to talk about with the movie?
- 1:02:43SPEAKER_00: Or should we move on to the next segment, the final segment?
- 1:02:45SPEAKER_03: Uh oh, yeah.
- 1:02:48SPEAKER_03: I also like my friend pointed this out last night.
- 1:02:52SPEAKER_03: I didn't I for the longest time I didn't notice it, but like Mr.
- 1:02:55SPEAKER_03: Wong has a wife in the movie.
- 1:02:57SPEAKER_03: And I was just thinking of like just that's so uncomfortable.
- 1:03:02SPEAKER_03: That you have an actual Asian person while someone is playing like yellow, I guess yellow face.
- 1:03:10SPEAKER_03: But it's weird, because yeah.
- 1:03:13SPEAKER_00: Just to have it actually that's that's something I feel like we should talk about.
- 1:03:16SPEAKER_00: It's just like how it's just the caricatures and like the the stereotyping of everyone.
- 1:03:21SPEAKER_00: I feel like it's really uncomfortable.
- 1:03:23SPEAKER_00: It makes me really uncomfortable watching it.
- 1:03:25SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:03:26SPEAKER_00: And particularly Mr.
- 1:03:28SPEAKER_00: Wong.
- 1:03:29SPEAKER_00: Um I don't know.
- 1:03:31SPEAKER_00: It's just it really goes for it.
- 1:03:35SPEAKER_00: And I don't know why.
- 1:03:37SPEAKER_03: They go for every easy joke that well not I've been I don't even want to say that it's a joke, because it's like just any easy stereotype, I guess, is how I would phrase it.
- 1:03:49SPEAKER_03: But like, yeah.
- 1:03:51SPEAKER_00: It's it's it's kind of even in like what 2007 it came out, I think.
- 1:03:56SPEAKER_00: It's just kind of it's almost surprising that they got away with as much as they did, even then.
- 1:04:03SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:04:03SPEAKER_03: Cause I think like it had already like things like this had already come out, and things are like this have already been um you know criticized.
- 1:04:13SPEAKER_03: And so it's like it's not like that, it's like it's the first time it's ever been done.
- 1:04:16SPEAKER_03: Okay, you took a step into an uncharted territory, don't do that again.
- 1:04:21SPEAKER_03: It's been done, and it's been told, hey, don't don't do that.
- 1:04:27SPEAKER_00: And uh part of me wonders if it's just like it's Eddie Murphy and he knows he can get away with anything.
- 1:04:33SPEAKER_03: Probably, probably.
- 1:04:34SPEAKER_03: And I think he also knows that it's like, okay, whatever, I don't have a whole lot to lose.
- 1:04:39SPEAKER_03: I mean he did he ended up having a lot to lose because of his other but he d I don't think he knew that that would have been received the way it it was.
- 1:04:48SPEAKER_03: Like hit like Dream Worlds, let's say.
- 1:04:50SPEAKER_03: But like that came afterwards.
- 1:04:53SPEAKER_03: I think he's just doing a part of the movie, but yeah.
- 1:04:56SPEAKER_00: Um Yeah, I feel like this came I feel like this was filmed before that and like required a lot more work.
- 1:05:02SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 1:05:02SPEAKER_00: Uh like post-production.
- 1:05:05SPEAKER_00: Um But do you know something interesting about this actually, that it's an Oscar nominated movie?
- 1:05:10SPEAKER_03: Oh yeah, I know.
- 1:05:11SPEAKER_03: For makeup.
- 1:05:12unknown: Yeah.
- 1:05:13SPEAKER_00: For makeup.
- 1:05:14SPEAKER_03: And you know, uh to be fair, if I saw Respucia walking down the street, I wouldn't necess like in some scenes, I wouldn't necessarily think, oh, that's not a that's not a woman.
- 1:05:27SPEAKER_03: Like it it doesn't look not like normal, I guess.
- 1:05:31SPEAKER_03: Well, she's obviously like she dresses weird, but that's maybe it's not terrible makeup.
- 1:05:37SPEAKER_00: It's like pretty good makeup for Respucia.
- 1:05:38SPEAKER_00: Mr.
- 1:05:39SPEAKER_00: Wong's wake-up is still.
- 1:05:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah, Mr.
- 1:05:40SPEAKER_03: Wong is not good.
- 1:05:42SPEAKER_03: It like you can tell it's Eddie Murphy under there.
- 1:05:46SPEAKER_00: I feel like he's still basically black as well.
- 1:05:50SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no, yeah, yeah.
- 1:05:55SPEAKER_00: So that's that's very strange.
- 1:05:58SPEAKER_00: Um But yeah, Oscar no a movie.
- 1:06:03SPEAKER_00: So like people from Norbit had to go there the same year that the people from Dream Girls had to go there, so you probably had to run into the same people.
- 1:06:12SPEAKER_01: That's probably very awkward for them, probably.
- 1:06:15SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:06:16unknown: Yeah.
- 1:06:17SPEAKER_00: Um Okay, so that was Norbit.
- 1:06:22SPEAKER_00: Now do you have so for the next segment, do you have a movie that was well reviewed that you considered to be a bad movie?
- 1:06:29SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:06:30SPEAKER_00: Or that you like really disliked.
- 1:06:32SPEAKER_03: I hated this movie.
- 1:06:33SPEAKER_03: And it was really well like, especially because it was filmed in like a small not small, it was like a small city outside of Toronto.
- 1:06:40SPEAKER_03: So that was another anytime like there's like a local like thing, loc something locally shot, everyone is like, oh we have to go see it.
- 1:06:51SPEAKER_03: Even if it's like good or bad, like it's like there's like a sense of like Canadian pride to go see it.
- 1:06:56SPEAKER_03: And so this movie was The Shape of Water.
- 1:06:58SPEAKER_03: That was that was filmed in Hamilton.
- 1:07:01SPEAKER_03: Um and I don't get it.
- 1:07:03SPEAKER_03: I don't care for it.
- 1:07:04SPEAKER_03: I think it's weird.
- 1:07:06SPEAKER_03: I think it's gross.
- 1:07:10SPEAKER_00: Before like the funny thing is, when you before you were like getting to that part, I thought you were gonna say when before you said Shape of Water, I thought you were gonna say Scott Pilgrim.
- 1:07:18SPEAKER_03: Oh, I actually really like that movie.
- 1:07:20SPEAKER_03: That also was shot shot here.
- 1:07:22SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that I would consider that a part.
- 1:07:24SPEAKER_03: That's that to me is a actually nostalgic movie.
- 1:07:28SPEAKER_00: Um But Shape of Water then, um Yeah, so you think it's what you said you think it's gross?
- 1:07:36SPEAKER_03: I think it's gross.
- 1:07:37SPEAKER_03: I don't like I don't like the idea of a woman falling in love with like it's just basically like a furries wet dream, and that I don't like that.
- 1:07:46unknown: I don't like that.
- 1:07:48SPEAKER_03: I don't like what I'm supposed to like because people are like, oh, it was so beautiful, and I can agree that like okay, yes, it's very scenic, like the way it's shot's quite nice, but I can I'm removed from that just based off of what the story is.
- 1:08:01SPEAKER_03: I don't like I know.
- 1:08:04SPEAKER_03: And then there's one point in the m I vividly remember this that like I think the actress's name is like Sally Hawkins or something like that.
- 1:08:11SPEAKER_03: Um she's having a moment with like the fish dude, and then there's a point where like I don't I don't remember.
- 1:08:18SPEAKER_03: I do remember like someone asked, How does it work?
- 1:08:21SPEAKER_03: Like how how do you guys phone?
- 1:08:23SPEAKER_03: Like they don't answer like that, but she does like she does like a she does like because like I you can't see like his member or anything as a fish, although he is naked, but she like he fully naked.
- 1:08:35SPEAKER_03: Yeah, she's like she does this and then she does like it comes out, like she gestures and it comes out, and I and that like irked me so much.
- 1:08:46SPEAKER_00: I just like I love the movie, I get the criticism behind it though.
- 1:08:52SPEAKER_00: I fully get why people think it's disgusting.
- 1:08:55SPEAKER_03: Like it's just it's just weird.
- 1:08:57SPEAKER_03: I don't it would be another thing if like okay, he's actually a human.
- 1:09:02SPEAKER_03: I could get behind that, but then it's like no, he stays this like I I just feel like how lonely is she that she needs that in like I'll say this though that has good uh uh costume special effects.
- 1:09:20SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:09:21SPEAKER_03: Yeah, they they deserve, you know, I think that's worthy of that.
- 1:09:25SPEAKER_03: I don't know about Mr.
- 1:09:26SPEAKER_03: Wong.
- 1:09:30SPEAKER_00: Uh but yeah, I totally get it.
- 1:09:32SPEAKER_00: But also it's just it's basically Beauty and the Beast.
- 1:09:36SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah.
- 1:09:37SPEAKER_00: The story Yeah Which like checks with Guillermo del Toro who just loves fairy tales and all of that stuff, so it just checks out with his style.
- 1:09:48SPEAKER_00: Do you like Guillermo del Toro in general?
- 1:09:50SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I've watched some of his other uh movies and I have no problems there.
- 1:09:56SPEAKER_00: It's purely like the the whole plot of this then that you just watched.
- 1:09:59SPEAKER_03: I just don't like it.
- 1:10:00SPEAKER_03: And I remember I remember I hate this movie because I agree with my dad on it.
- 1:10:05SPEAKER_03: Because he was like reading about it and it was like, this is s like sick, but not in the sick skateboard way, like sick, like sicko.
- 1:10:13SPEAKER_03: Um and I was like, and then I watched because my friend was like a huge fan of it.
- 1:10:17SPEAKER_03: So I go, I was like, okay, what's all this hoopla about it?
- 1:10:20SPEAKER_03: I go and watch it, I was like, you know what?
- 1:10:22SPEAKER_03: I agree with my dad.
- 1:10:23SPEAKER_03: I don't like this.
- 1:10:25SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:10:26SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:10:26SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:10:27SPEAKER_03: The movie's just so green too.
- 1:10:30SPEAKER_03: Like it's I feel like it's color graded so green.
- 1:10:33SPEAKER_03: And I I don't know, man.
- 1:10:35SPEAKER_00: Oh, I think of it I always think of it as blue.
- 1:10:36SPEAKER_03: Maybe I can't see.
- 1:10:41SPEAKER_00: I think of it as like a like an aqua kind of colour.
- 1:10:45SPEAKER_00: I I don't know, maybe you're right.
- 1:10:46SPEAKER_00: I haven't seen it in a while.
- 1:10:48SPEAKER_03: I don't know.
- 1:10:49SPEAKER_03: Minority port report is really blue, I think.
- 1:10:51SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, definitely.
- 1:10:55SPEAKER_00: Uh I saw this at the London Film Festival.
- 1:10:58SPEAKER_00: Oh.
- 1:10:58SPEAKER_00: And uh and I I saw it like there was a QA afterwards with the with all of them.
- 1:11:04SPEAKER_03: Did anyone ask anything saucy?
- 1:11:08SPEAKER_00: Not that I can remember, but I I was like, I just remember Guillermo del Toro is a real character and just like so uh charismatic.
- 1:11:19SPEAKER_00: I just remember being like everyone else was kind of quiet.
- 1:11:22SPEAKER_00: Nobody in the film really said anything.
- 1:11:26SPEAKER_00: It was mainly him talking.
- 1:11:29SPEAKER_00: But apparently he lives in London as well, which I found out there.
- 1:11:32SPEAKER_00: Oh, I didn't know.
- 1:11:33SPEAKER_03: Apparently Lena Dunham lives in London.
- 1:11:37SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I didn't someone someone told me that and I was like, oh, okay.
- 1:11:42SPEAKER_00: Great.
- 1:11:46SPEAKER_00: Um okay, so uh do you have any plugs?
- 1:11:51SPEAKER_00: How can we find you online?
- 1:11:52SPEAKER_00: Do you have anything you want to promote at the moment?
- 1:11:54SPEAKER_03: I know it's like a weird time, but yeah, a patio show here that you have to have my invite.
- 1:12:00SPEAKER_03: No.
- 1:12:01SPEAKER_03: Um no, not really.
- 1:12:02SPEAKER_03: I guess just socials, and I have a website.
- 1:12:05SPEAKER_03: Um that's about it.
- 1:12:06SPEAKER_03: They're all uh it's ericaeal.com and then at Eric Ealer for both Twitter and Instagram.
- 1:12:11SPEAKER_03: That's about it.
- 1:12:13SPEAKER_00: Cool.
- 1:12:14SPEAKER_00: When are you back in London?
- 1:12:16SPEAKER_00: Have you got any plans?
- 1:12:17SPEAKER_00: Or are you just like taking it back?
- 1:12:18SPEAKER_03: Hard to say.
- 1:12:19SPEAKER_03: I thought I was thinking I would be back there for September, but I don't know.
- 1:12:23SPEAKER_03: Um I guess my my agent has been very like, oh, I don't want to tell you to come here and then we don't have anything for you.
- 1:12:32SPEAKER_03: So he's like, I'm keeping that in mind.
- 1:12:34SPEAKER_03: But then also it's like I got like I don't have a day job there anymore, so I'd and I have to scramble to find I was like looking at like you know, part-time jobs there, and it's like only ice cream places that are hiring, weirdly.
- 1:12:50SPEAKER_00: Actually, yeah, passing a few of those places, they were all open to give out.
- 1:12:54SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:12:54SPEAKER_03: And I was like, I don't really I mean I could, I don't mind, but I don't I'm always like I want to work in a place where I could eat the food because and I know I I'm not gonna be well, I would eat it, but I don't want to eat that stuff.
- 1:13:06SPEAKER_03: Like I used I used to I used to work at like a food hall, so I would just steal food from there.
- 1:13:12SPEAKER_00: So that's like kind of a dream.
- 1:13:15SPEAKER_03: Oh yeah, I get like because it was just like hipstery people coming in every day.
- 1:13:18SPEAKER_03: I got to eat all these food, this overpriced food for free.
- 1:13:22SPEAKER_03: It was great.
- 1:13:22SPEAKER_03: I loved it.
- 1:13:23SPEAKER_03: That's great.
- 1:13:26SPEAKER_00: Maybe I should do that.
- 1:13:28SPEAKER_03: It's hon honestly, that's it's been my favorite job because they'd let me take off whatever days I wanted, and then you don't do anything.
- 1:13:35SPEAKER_03: You're literally you like have you work for two hours, really, but you're there the entire day.
- 1:13:40SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 1:13:41SPEAKER_00: That okay, that that's sounding good.
- 1:13:44SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and free food.
- 1:13:45SPEAKER_03: Who wasn't who doesn't want that?
- 1:13:47SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:13:48SPEAKER_00: Okay, well thanks for coming on, Eric.
- 1:13:50SPEAKER_03: Yeah, thanks for having me.
- 1:13:51unknown: Yeah.
- 1:13:52SPEAKER_00: And uh yeah, follow Erica at her uh on her socials, and if if you're in London when she comes back, go and see her when she has some shows.
- 1:14:02SPEAKER_00: When everyone starts having shows again.
- 1:14:04SPEAKER_03: Whenever that happens, hopefully soon.
- 1:14:07unknown: Yeah.
- 1:14:08SPEAKER_00: Okay, great.
- 1:14:09SPEAKER_00: Speak to you soon.
- 1:14:10SPEAKER_00: See ya.
- 1:14:12SPEAKER_00: That's the end of the podcast.
- 1:14:13SPEAKER_00: You can find me on Twitter with the username at YCove or at Yanis Cove on Instagram.
- 1:14:19SPEAKER_00: Please remember to rate and review us on iTunes if you enjoyed this, so I can end up making more.
